I’ve tried to listen to Björk before. I always thought I’d like her because she is unique. Traditionally I feel like she is just “too weird” for me. But this album was palatable. I would absolutely listen again.

I like some of her other albums better, but this is still a good listen. It's quite lovely but feels more like a "I need to be in the mood for this" kind of album. Somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4.

Björk is the little spoon in a bed set outside amid an ice garden filled with night-blossoming flowers, and there she sleeps and dreams and sighs beneath the wispy green undulating arms of the Aurora.

8/10, pretty cool, I wish I'd had better speakers to listen to it on.

Giving this a mediocre score because I don’t like it that much, but I appreciate that there is some experimentation on this album. Definitely don’t like the electronic sounds as much as I liked Debut. 6/10

Wow, why haven't I listened to this before. SO good.

"Modern chamber music" is right. Frequently lovely and often engrossing, this is her high watermark.Untroubled by genre expectations and free to do what she wants, Bjork explores the interior frontiers to powerful and moving effect. One finds it quite dramatic and emotionally intense, and admits to liking the record much more now than when it was released. It's perhaps a bit overdetermined (like much of her work), but she pulls it off and the instrumentation (clicky electro microbeats, harps, choirs) and studio soundscapes work better there than elsewhere in her catalogue. “Hidden Place” is good and the “Cocoon” makes one wonder what it would be like to be Matthew Barney for a day. “It’s Not Up to You” and “Pagan Poetry” are the highlights, and “Unison” a very strong end, after a bit of a lull on the previous few cuts. This is an artist creating her own genre so one finds it hard to figure a set of criteria to apply here.

Along with Medúlla, Björk at her absolute best. The attraction of Vespertine is the unexpected (for the time, and tome some degree even now) synthesis of organic and electronic. There's a warmth to the sound (not talking about the voice here – and, interestingly, I think this album showcases Björk's vocal range more effectively than any of her other albums.) I'm not, and I'll never be, a close parser of lyrics. but there is an edgy contentment that runs through this album. Sort of like, "I don't know how I got here, and I'm not sure that it's going to last, but I'll certainly enjoy the moment." Which is a lovely sentiment (assuming I'm not reading too much into the evidence, as it were.

very interesting electronic music with one of the most distinctive voices I have heard. Musically I understand why this is important, but just not in my interests currently.

She made good music after that one, but this was her last (and arguably her best) masterpiece. Immensely touching, with a deep, warm and detailed production that makes you go back to it and discover new things after each listen. Vulnicura wishes it was as intimate as this one.

Wow! It is without a doubt one of Bjork's finest work. A kind of "gentle Kid A", out-of-this-world electro music accompanied with Bjork's emotional voice and lyrics. Beautiful!

There are tracks that I really like from Bjork. On my first listen of Vespertine, I liked what I heard, but didn't bookmark anything to my personal playlist. I also didn't find anything that I was wanting to skip. This album has room to grow on me. The album was good (3 stars)

Really quite lovely. Lots of odd rhythmic experimentation on a John Cage/Aphex Twin kind of vibe. Her voice is more varied than ever. It is a tiny bit muddy at times, but otherwise very lovely.

Always like Bjork records when I put them on. I just don’t put them on often.

I liked this more than our last Bjork-based adventure - felt like there was a bit more depth to it. It's quirky, it's odd, but in places it's really really good. Pagan Poetry is brilliant. Some people seem to find her voice/singing style really offensive, but I certainly don't on this album. Very chilled out soundscape with a lot of nuance on top of it, it's great to work/write to. 3/5, could do with another stand out track to get it up to a 4.

Bjork is a rather hard to crack case for me (file under "first world problems"). On one hand, I consider her voice one of the better things humanity has going for itself. I also like a lot of her music (please refer to my previous review of her album Debut, a very 5 stars affair). However, Bjork is not the artist to produce the same album twice. She likes to explore. Thus far, I find her explorations, while somewhat interesting, not half as thrilling as Debut was. Vespertine is a clear example of this "problem". Lucky for me, Bjork hasn't put a gun to my head to force me to listen to each and every album of hers. I pick and choose, while she's out there having fun exploring. I will not be going back to Vespertine any time soon, but at the same time I appreciate the artist that tries to be original and say something new with each and every album.

It's quite ok but I wouldn't say it's my favourite Bjork album. It feels very samey throughout, which by itself is not a problem but it's not really my genre so that only accentuated some of the things I dislike about electronic. I've only listened to it once and I could see getting accustomed to it with more listens but I'm not sure if I want to come back to this record much.

Bjork is really on the cutting edge here - this album is unusual, experimental, and understated. I personally prefer the raw emotion of Homogenic but there is no question in my mind that this is an excellent album, deserving of being on this list.

I found this one difficult to get into on first release - I'd loved Homogenic and this was an abrupt turn. Over time I've grown to love it and all its quiet intricacies. It's one to be actively listened to (not background music) and when I'm in the right mood it's magnificent. Hovering between 4 and 5 stars... and I'm in the right mood for it today.

I fell in love with Björk in the late 80's and bought her first three solo albums after the Sugarcubes disbanded, but never really listened to anything after that. I really like this album and Love her voice. Can't wait for more Björk, I'm sure it's coming!

Really intriguing and interesting sonically, and Bjork's strange ebb and flow cadence always fascinates me. I appreciate the sparse-ness of the album, not overloading the senses. Bjork always does something intentionally different which I've always liked. I need to get me one of them goose dresses. Heirloom was a standout track for me. Kinda difficult to give a rating to a Bjork album first listen.

Björk is the finest example of an artist with a such specific and distinctive voice and style, that she can't be mistaken for anyone else. It's really a double-edged sword, being this unique. You can be instantly recognised and you are only in a league of your own, but you are also in a certain artistic mould, that you can't escape. It must be especially hard for Björk, because her style is mostly experimental, so the more "weird and quirky" the song is, the more it fits into the mould. Similarly, we approach the same conclusion on "Vespertine". Björk's singing is as unusual as ever, voice modulation cut sharp as a razor, soft music, full of various string instruments adds a strong foundation, which actually amplifies the quirkiness of the vocalist. The dichotomy is clearly visible on the album as well. "Cocoon" is an example of, in my opinion, overcomplicated track with Björk being all over the place, cutting deep from all angles. But on the other end of spectrum we have just a little bit more conventional "Pagan Poetry", which is a beautiful composition, where the avant-garde elements are just the compliment, and not at the core. With such an ambivalent feelings, the rating has to reflect it as well, going for the 3 stars, just in the middle.

I've been meaning to get into Björk and even had this album saved already so great excuse to start. She's got a new record coming out soon, too! UPDATE: This was a beautiful album. Very subtle and finely textured. The closing track was especially gorgeous. I'm curious to go back and listen to her work leading up to this and would be interested in a louder, bolder version of her sound.

It’s pretty - one of Björk’s most easily listenable album. The trade mark vocal acrobatics remain - which one can either love or hate - but the music is a nice soft electrónica - reminiscent of Kid A or Boards of Canada and that ilk. Not great not terrible.

This was a very interesting album. The beats were all produced by Bjork, she said she created them all. Her vocals are very dreamy. Many of the songs felt... ethereal. The lyrics are a bit undecipherable to me, though. I think that if she just did more singing of oohs and ahs, I would like it more. I don't know, I would think Bjork would be more in my wheelhouse, something I would really get into. But for some reason, I just don't totally get it. I'm not saying she's talented, I just never got her stuff. It's just a bit too... far out for me? (And I think that's saying something, considering some of the stuff I listen to.) So it's ok, but I am never going to pull it up and say "oooooh, I want to listen to THAT."

Sorry, still can't do it. She has such an elegant voice but her unique style is just not for me. Probably the electronica - also not my favorite style. I didn't hate it, but I found myself wondering when it might be over. I am still not interested in exploring more of her work after this album.

This album is definitely a mood (sometimes a sexually-explicit mood - Bjork was apparently very horny when she wrote this album - see the video for Pagan Poetry). I'm not always a fan of some of the lo-fi sounds she goes with, but this album is ethereal and takes you away somewhere else. Favorite tracks: Hidden Place (haunting and sultry at the same time), It's Not Up To You/Undo (I'm putting these together because they share an important message about letting go of anxiety - both are beautiful entrancing tracks), and Heirloom. Probably my main problem with the album (outside the lo-fi stuff I don't like) is that it's a lot of similar sounding music throughout. I enjoyed the album, but have to go with a 3 - good to hear but I don't think I'll be seeking it out.

I appreciate the creativity in the song design and the combination of instruments and samples or however they created the repeating and jumping rhythm sections. That said, this isn’t my favorite collection of songs by Bjork. I probably won’t go out of my way to listen again.

Ack, another Bjork album on the list! As much as I'm exposed to Bjork's music here, I still can't get into her music. It's partly her voice, but the music feels like it's weird just to be weird and it feels somewhat forced, if that makes any sense. As far as what I've heard so far (her 3rd record on the list), this one isn't bad and I did make it through the whole album, so it didn't bug me as much as her others. Yes, that's a compliment.

Björk continues to elude me. I like the concepts, I like the atmosphere, but she makes albums that seem to demand multiple listens to unlock everything, and I'm just not that deep into it. I do love the choral vocals and the various flavors of electronic music on here, however. Favorite tracks: "It's Not Up to You", "Aurora"

Fascinating stuff though I connect with a lot of these songs on a cerebral level rather than emotionally. But this is only my first time listening and this is so the kind of album that you need to hear a bunch of times before you fully “get it.” The strings on “It’s Not Up to You” add a layer of whimsy that I associate with some of Björk’s music. It’s like she spiked the song with an old movie score. “Undo” is one I can groove to. There’s a skittering, glitchy beat that you can dance to (living room dancing, not club dancing). Ooh her vocals on “Pagan Poetry” get pretty raw. I think it’s awesome that she gives herself the space to explore on these songs. There must have been a lot of interesting vocal takes to choose from for any of these tracks. Her performances feel very immediate and of the moment. Makes me want to watch some live videos of her. Incredible that Björk is the lead producer on most of these songs. They’re really complex and filled with interesting details. (The warped bass sound on “An Echo a Stain” is what made me check the producer credits - it’s a great effect.) And to think all these reactions are just to the music. I didn’t pay much attention to the lyrics on this first listen but given the emotional intensity of her vocals, it’s clear that the subject matter is worth paying attention to as well. Highlights: “Hidden Place,” “It’s Not Up to You,” “Undo,” “Unison” (a playful but also epic closer!)

At times beautiful, unique, haunting, and weird. I really enjoyed it. Lots of thought and care were put into these tracks, and I think in it Bjork shows that she is an evocative singer with a provocative persona that unfortunately at times takes attention away from her music. There's so much going on behind her voice (which herself is an attention-grabber) that I think it warrants multiple listens and I'm excited to add some of these tracks to some of my more-listened-to playlists.

It's easy to make the mistake of over-attributing Vespertine to Matmos. From the sound of it, Björk built most of the edifice, and it shows. The most danceable bits are insanely abstract, and they fade in and out to the other instruments. Vespertine sends the listener on a journey. Something about the eccentricity of Debut simply can't be matched, but this is fine, fine, fine as well.

A bit background-y, which makes it easy to drift out while writing reports but good stuff. A few years ago my sister gave us Xmas presents of a gift vouchers for some VR place in East London and we did the Vulnicura VR thing and it was mental. While it initially appears less aurally confrontational than her other work, the layering on this thing is just incredible. A real grower, and still sounds fresh.

After run of 3 absolute classic 60’s rock records, this couldn’t be more different. Not sure it was enjoyable but can appreciate the artistry here. Glad I listened but wouldn’t be rushing back, deserves to be on the list, but this music can feel like a chore

I didn't think I liked Bjork before I listened to this album. The music is actually pretty good, quite chill and ambient. Indeed, after the album finished some of Amazon Music's related tracks playlist included the likes of Massive Attack who I love. However, I can't really get beyond Bjork's voice, it's just a bit too nasally and whiny. So, after listening, I still don't like Bjork.

This was better than I expected, I'm pleasantly surprised that I could enjoy this album as much as I did. Going into this I already liked the song hyperballad from her other stuff but that was the extent of my bjork knowledge. It felt very magical and fairylike and very unique.

Not as insufferable as the last Bjork album I had to listen to, but still not something I want to listen to again.

Ethereal and otherworldly, of course, because it's Bjork. I have a strange fascination with her and her works. They poke at a part of me I didn't know was there and they make me feel exuberant. 'Debut' is the standard she set, and she set it high. I've listened to some of her other albums before, not this one, and felt like they didn't completely live up to the expectations of her first. However, 'Vespertine' felt like a return to exceptional form. There's a purpose to each of the songs, and you can feel the emotion and time put into each of them. Some people might just dismiss the songs because of how she manipulates her voice, but that doesn't give Bjork enough credit. Inventive, strange, and exceptional, I loved this album.

It’s Björk!

I've had a fascination with Bjork ever since she showed up on Space Ghost Coast to Coast. This is a lovely album full of haunting melodies and complexly layered compositions. I want to marry Bjork and live in her weird Icelandic castle and wear bizarre clothing with her.

My god, is this where the indie girl voice comes from?! Can't really fault Bjork for that totally since it's probably her legit accent but I HATE that vocal style. Very lush instrumentation and the choir aspect makes the album feel epic, almost like a soundtrack for a movie. But I don't know if I can get over the indie girl accent.

It's something I have to be in the mood for but it is beautiful music.

I love Bjork, vocals, production...everything is great. However for mě it lacked the emotional value needed to be 5. Maybe one day.

The first couple or songs are typical Björk-gloomliness, but it gets better. Björk really experiments with different styles and instrumentation. Pagan Poetry and Aurora are real standouts. 3/5

Compared to Björks album Debut this lacks energy. Björks vocals as usual are splendid but the accompanying instrumentals could need a little more punch. I actually miss the electronic club vibes from Debut. Vespertine lays it focus on the more artsy side. The production quality is extremely well done and there really isn't anything lacking when it comes to the mixing. After listening to this album I would like to go back and increase my rating for Debut.

Gorgeously produced instrumentals. However I think björks vocals have an acquired taste that I haven’t acquired yet. The vocal quality is beautiful but I do wish there was an instrumental version of this project. So 3/5

Another really solid entry from Iceland's crown jewel. This album is a lot more accessible than some of Bjork's other work. There are a lot of beautiful string arrangements mixed with electronic elements. Counterbalancing these grand pieces are a lot of very minimalist moments, which works quite well. All of these are tied together with Bjork's unique voice and lyricism. Fav Tracks: Cocoon, Pagan Poetry, Heirloom

Cooing. Breathing. Warbling. It’s a mellow vibe. I like Björk when she’s a little more growly and screamy.

Bjork in perhaps the mellowest album of her career, and the last one that could really be called pop. Last song is an absolute tune.

A difficult album for me to assess. Its songs are almost completely lacking in melody in the conventional sense. Her singing while gorgeous is unique and again does not follow conventional song structure rules. Hidden Place has moments of beauty especially the choral voices towards the end. Cocoon an incredible breathy vocal performance with spare arrangement that does not resonate with me. It's Not up to You, starts out with typically unconventional phrasing over some lush strings and electronic flourishes. The chorus has a more conventional pop song feel that helps me to connect with the song. Undo is similar with overdubbed voices and some gorgeous choral arrangements. Again little in the way of conventional song structures, but moments of beauty. Pagan Poetry, the highlight of the album for me and its centerpiece. It's mystical eastern sounds go beautifully with another tour de force vocal performance. But by the time we get Aurora I find myself wishing for some tempo variations. And that's how this album leaves me...feeling of promise unfulfilled, wanting more. 3 🌟

This is another on the list of artists that should only be on this list once. Is it good - yes. Is it demonstrably better or different than the earlier Björk releases? Not to me.

En... hljóðheimurinn í mest megninu af þessari plötu er copy/paste af Exciter með Depeche Mode sem kom út rúml 2 mánuðum fyrr. Það var ekkert *nýtt* fyrir mér á þessari plötu allavega. Nú telst ég ábyggilega vera föðurlandssvikari í framhaldinu.

p872. 2001. 3 stars. The Icelandic love child of Sinead O'Connor and David Lynch. This sounds like the lost soundtrack to Twin Peaks. Having said that, their is only so much weirdness you can listen to before it gets boring. Well done of its kind, but becomes background music real soon.

Not my favorite Bjork, but the album I’d play for anyone who wanted to understand Bjork (if that’s possible). Varied, ambitious and overflowing with ideas and strategies.

I have stayed away from Björk for a long time. Mostly because her voice has never appealed to me. And on this album that problem is there, but I'm also listening to a whole chunk of her at once as opposed to the occasional song here and there, so I’m hearing her more consistently and appreciating more just what an expressive and impressive vocalist she is. I think when she leans into the "manic pixie breathy" thing it doesn't click with me, but when she extends her range, it's magical. Also the musical arrangements on this album are really incredible. I read up a bit on this album and how she produced it, and it's clear that so much love and attention went into it. Sometimes the beats and melodies don't quite land for me, but when the unholy marriage of glitchiness and groove coincide, along with the vocals, it's wonderful.

I've only ever heard of Bjork because of her - shall we say - out-there dress at the Oscars in 2001. So it almost comes as no surprise that she is donning that exact dress on the cover of Vespertine. This album was an overall nice surprise, as what little press I'd heard of Bjork was all about the swan dress, and how strange it was. Of which I then formed a pre-conceived notion of what her music sounded like, and that it wouldn't be something I would enjoy. The ethereal like quality to her music, draws you in with her understated beats and unique voice, of which I would liken to someone like Norwegian artist Aurora, paired with the sensuality of FKA Twigs. Best: Aurora Worst: Heirloom

Amazing never listened to bjork before

With “Vespertine”, Bjork pulled a “Kid A” after scoring an “OK Computer” with 1997’s “Homogenic”. Like “Kid A”, “Vespertine” marks a sharp left field turn to something a little more abstract and introspective. It’s also denser, more complex and perhaps more rewarding than its predecessor. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about it at first, but the first thing to know about “Vespertine” is that it’s a treasure trove of arrangements and production, so intricately woven together. Knowing Bjork recorded “microbeats” with a series of household objects (crushing ice! Shuffling cards!) and then used music program Sibelius to write up all the string, harp and music box parts puts it even further up my street. Right from the get go with “Hidden Place”, “Vespertine” is elegant and rich. The combination of beats, Bjork’s acrobatic vocals and especially the lush choir and strings makes for a gorgeous sound. “Cocoon” is also beautiful, and almost uncomfortably intimate: “when I wake up, gorgeousness- he’s still inside me”, followed up by some veeery heavy breathing. Of the remaining tracks, the most breathtaking are “Pagan Poetry” and closer “Unison”. The brief instrumental “Frosti” deserves a mention, and the only discernible traces of the earlier, danceable Bjork are “It’s Not Up To You” and “Heirloom”. The rest is still working its charm on me, slowly but surely… but at the very least, it’s intriguing. I have enough confidence in Bjork’s genius to know this is at least a four star and will only improve with time.

It is an interesting record, to say the least. Really enjoyed the vocals. However, Vespertine felt overthought a quarter of the time for me. I feel inspired to explore more of Bjork's discography, however, I don't feel the urge to come back to this album.

Such a beautiful sound, classic and timeless. Faves. It's hard to go past Hidden Place and Pagan Poetry, and it's a great album overall.

Interesting but not close to Debut in listening pleasure. One frail sounding song after another. Didn't add.

Layered, complex, unique, difficult at times, I can see repeated listens bearing multiple, complex tasting fruits. The opposite of background music this album demands attention. We will see if the rewards are worth the effort of this listener. To be continued. 3.75 🌟

Just cant get into Bjork

It's just so weeeeird. The sounds, what she is doing with her voice, not really enjoyable.

I just do not get Björk. It is just not my thing in anyway.

1. Hidden Place: Goes on too long for me with too little variation in musical elements or lyrics. 2. Cocoon: I can't really get into it... 9. Sun in My Mouth: I think because I can't distinguish different moods between tracks, I can't identify any themes or feelings that I connect with.

My favorite Björk album. From the intimate ”Cocoon” to the sprawling ”Pagan Poetry”, the album combines orchestral strings, choir song, assorted twinkling instruments, electonic production and Björk’s umistakable voice into a cohesive, enveloping and deeply personal expression. The ticking and shuffling electronic percussion used also appeals to me personally.

Weird but good

In most of her work, Bjork's voice takes center stage. Which makes sense, considering that her voice is the Icelandic version of a cowboy swagger. On this album, the mixing takes center stage, with perfectly placed notes of piano doing enough to offset the darker beats. I'd love to be in that mixing room. I'd also love to hear all of the parts separately. My guess is that each would be interesting on its own, but together create something greater than the sum.

Despite some of Björk's irritating vocal tics, this is a mostly enjoyable LP. The production is lush and encompassing, and the instrumentals generally offer interesting melodic progressions intertwined with the singer's swooping delivery. Could use some editing, though, as most tracks exhaust their ideas by the halfway point.

My goodness, Bjork is an absolutely fascinating artist in every way. I really hadn't actively listened to much of her work before this project, and I'm glad it's introduced me to a few of her albums. This album might be my favorite of hers thus far. Her sense of melody and harmony, her writing and composition, and her personal style of vocal delivery all add up to such an intriguing layering and texturing of music. I don't even like hearing such synth-heavy music on a regular basis, but she makes it work so well. By the end of the album, things felt a little jarred to me but I think that's due to her use of unusual rhythms, especially in her melodic delivery.

Listening to Bjork can be so boring sometimes, repetitive vocal and musical styling must admit this is not one of my favourites, I Liked "Hidden Place" but found the rest of the LP quite mundane.

It was interesting for sure, but it went a little bit too far. First part of the album was very much better.

Okei mitä helvettiä ja mitä kummaa, miks oon skipannut just tän Björkin levyn aiemmin. Osuu nimittäin todella herkkään paikkaan tämmöselle 00-luvun alun olohuoneteknon ystävälle. Plus siihen päälle, että Björk vaan osaa tehdä maagista musaa. Alkupuoli on jo tosi kova, mutta erityisesti yllätti, miten loppupuolella esim. Aurora, Heirloom ja Unison pystyy vielä viemään hommaa eteenpäin. Sanoisin 4.5/5 mut pyöristetään nyt ylöspäin, ku niin kiva yllätys.

4/4/22 This album is the musical equivalent to me looking at some random object in a modern art museum and trying to figure out how this is art. I would like the album much more if I could take her vocals out because the actual sound itself is very chill-hop/rhythmic relaxing vibes. She just a bit too out there for me. A reluctant 3/5, because there's too much good in here to deny. Musically, it's varied and interesting. Lyrically, it's a mixed bag of clunky, weird, downright pretentious, and the occasional unguarded bit of inspiration. My biggest problem is Bjork's vocal style itself. Breathy, gossamer sing-speaking is all well and good, but too often she's determined to linger and play with the rhythm and melody long past the point at which listening to her do so is enjoyable. There's this mode of delivery that sounds like a jazz vocalist on sedatives - a soporific scat that completely robs the track of propulsion. Syllables are drawn out until they almost lose any semantic value. That said, that isnt constant: there's enough in here that works, and when it works, it's elven and intimate, and hell, a little bit sensual.

And the randomizer has given me another Björk album; it could be much worse. This is Björk's fourth album and much more subdued than her previous three which had big beats and more pop-oriented songs. This music is still in the electronic or techno music genre with a more quiet rhthym or beat backbone, "microbeats", filled in with strings, keyboards and her voice. Maybe not a good comparison but reminded me hearing Radiohead's "Kid A" for the first time in that it's different and more abstract than what came before. There is not really an obvious "hit" single but I did enjoy most of the songs which flow together very nicely. The focus of most these songs is pretty obvious: romance and sex. The two songs that were highlights for me were "Cocoon" which reminded me of the Radiohead album with its subtle beats and "It's Not Up to You" and its dramatic strings and arrangements. This album is one that I liked more and more after each listen and is definitely one you want to listen to from start to finish.

Loved this. Some of her best vocal performances, beautiful production.

I wonder if this is the album that sparked her famous swan costume she wore back them. A very quirky album but that isn't a bad thing. I was never a huge fan of Bjork besides Gloomy Sunday, but this was enjoyable.

Happy birthday to me, I guess. Never been a big fan of Bjork. She's certainly original, I just don't like her style. Her voice is a little too breathless, music a little too sparse. It's like a more ephemeral version of Radiohead, which I'm sure works for a lot of people but for me it doesn't do much. Still, at least a couple songs I liked, but overall I'd rather listen to something else. Favorite tracks: It's Not Up to You, Unison. Album art: Black and white, not a great start, but she's wearing that famed dead swan dress, and there's a cool stencil of a swan superimposed over the whole thing. It's a bit busy with the layers but I do like this one. 2.5/5

Well it’s Björk, so that’s always good for an adventure.

No words can describe how beautiful this album is. Flawlessly written, produced, orchestrated, and mastered album. There's tremendous songwriting over the entire album. And it's sounds so minimal while atmosphere is so magical and ethereal. Multi-tracked harmonies elevate that atmosphere splendidly. Most favourite tracks from the album: Cocoon  It's Not Up to You  Undo  Aurora  Sun in My Mouth    Unison  9/10

I really like about half this record. Quite a lot actually. But the other half, well, I don’t. But I will listen again at least the half I like.

I'm torn on how to rate this. 100% absolutely beautiful and unique music. But, I'll probably never listen to it again.

Better than expected

My only exposure to Bjork before this was her alt-rock band The Sugarcubes, "Birthday" is one of my favorite songs. And I'm happy to hear her vocal style in still here 13 years later. Dramatic and beautiful, before in the Sugarcubes it gave off a wistful and mysterious vibe, but here we have something much more stunning, carefully arranged with intricate electronics that serve to construct an ambiance for the audience and support Bjork's vocal style and lyrical subject matter. I can tell how inaccessible this could be for most listeners. I mean, the second track "Cocoon" is characterized by moments of silence, light ambiance effects, and a mostly static whisper that rarely breaches its boundaries. This is an aesthetic that contrasts with most pop music out there. For many people, this abstract aesthetic combined with the cryptic lyrics could come off as pretentious. However, her one-line lyrics project brief images that build the subject matter, allowing the audience plenty of time to focus on everything going on, from Bjork's storytelling to her emotions to the production's environment. Major issue is that the second half is significantly weaker than the first. Not bad by any means, but they don't blow me away until the closer "Unison." There are many things I love about those tracks though. "Frosti" leading into "Aurora" sparks images of mythical ice kingdoms. "An Echo a Stain" is a fest of industrial anxiety. "Sun in My Mouth" has some of her prettiest singing. "Heirloom" is straight up trip hop, probably the most accessible, even her vocals are more traditional here. I have nothing notable to say about "Harm of Will," just another decent track, but at this point I'm tuning out until "Unison" snaps me back into a dramatic operatic finish. First off, I love Bjórk. I always said that if I never made it as a day-trader on Wall Street, I was going to move to Iceland and become a truck driver just so could share the island with her. Don't you just want to put her in your pocket? Her and her little raspy voice and funny accent...? She's so cute. Anyway, something I'm not so fond of is her heavy use of wind chimes, harps, harpsichords and music boxes on this album. I feel I'm being lured into an eerily warm land of ferries and gnomes, 25-hour days of golden sunlight and wizards. If Debut, Post and Homogenic never worked out, this may have just been another international artist that nobody knows how to rate. But put against some of her other work, this just doesn't have the same energy. Bottom line, I think Bjórk is an amazing artist and has a clear vision of what music can be. However, that doesn't always translate to music for wide-public consumption.

Björk’s work is always clearly and uniquely Björk, but beyond the vocals and the off-kilter experimentalism it has actually evolved a lot over the years. Since I had listened but never written reviews as we encountered her albums, I’m now going back and re-listening with more of an interest in trying to make sense of the variety. “Debut,” her… debut, was backed by rather bland and unchallenging electronica. But that was no longer the case by the time of “Vespertine.” The arrangements are sparser, swelling and fading, building tension and emotion. The harps and tinkling percussion found in parts of “Debut” are still here, but the violins and strings that were so prominent on “Vulnicura” had not arrived yet.

Ethereal. Experimental. Electronic. That’s what comes across to me. At times quite pleasant, such as the multiple Björks on Undo. And unfortunately followed up by Pagan Poetry. I can do without the hand bell orchestra. This is in the 2/3 range. Bottom line: There were far more songs where I wanted to turn this album off than keep listening.

Enjoyed listening but it was exhausting, very Jazzy and lacking in structure.

3.4 + This was around when I fell out as a Bjork fan. This one’s dense and only rewards the closest of listens. Overly complex lyrics that feel like they were lifted raw from some teenager’s poetry journal. Rather than edit herself, Bjork elects to build songs around the complexity - a worthy challenge for a musician but less so for the listener. Still, there are moments of striking beauty: “Harm of Will”, “Frosti” and “Undo.” Overall, it feels foggy and I can see why I dreaded revisiting this album.

Had not fully invested in this album at the time: it was always Homogenic and then Post. But last year Debut turned out to be much better than I remembered. And this year the same is even more true for Vespertine, the 2nd 1001 album from Bjork on the list for me.

Top tier Bjork album for me, along with Debut and Homogenic.

Cet album m'a rappelé certaines heures sombres du générateur (je fais ici référence à Portishead et Goldfrapp). Ajoutez à ce côté trip-hop d'ignobles glitcheries et vous obtiendrez un projet assez peu agréable à l'écoute.

Un somptueux album de la part du second artiste islandais de ma journée. En effet, vous n'êtes pas sans savoir que je suis en possession de plusieurs générateurs pirates, et aujourd'hui mon générateur pop m'a proposé l'excellent groupe KALEO. Une journée donc placée sous le signe du grand froid, que je compte compléter en me jouant quelques chansons du dernier album d'Ed Sheeran, figure de proue de la rayon surgelé pop.

The instrumental tracks would have been okay had they been instrumentals used in the form of ambience music, and her vocal abilities are amazing. But this avant garde misuse of the voice just doesn’t fit with the music and tended to be directionless and a bit annoying.

Valeur sentimentale pour moi cet album Un de mes préféré de Bjork. Album de tempête de neige. Les textures et les sons de cet album sont sublime. Intime et immense à la fois

Toujours inventif et différent. J’aime sa recherche ne nouvelles façon de concevoir de la musique. Par contre, c’est pas son meilleur (je préfère post), un peu linéaire, quelques tounes qui vieillissent mal (Frosti par exemple).

C’est intéressant de lire le contexte de cet album. Un album fait après une période intense pour Björk et où les artistes commençaient à travailler avec des laptops pour composer. Il y a beaucoup de manipulations sonores pour construire les beats. Cet album a également été composé alors que Napster et les téléchargements devenaient de plus en plus populaires et elle voulait que tous les instruments ne soient pas altérés par l’écoute suite aux download. Ce n’est pas le plus accessible des albums, mais il est intéressant et cadre bien dans la discographie de l’artiste.

Now this was pretty cool! Icelandic chilled trip hop beats! Beautiful silky vocals and again, something I would never have listened to without this! Not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but well worth a listen!

Ugh. Still don’t like Björk

I've been meaning to listen to some Bjork ever since my Icelandic vacation awhile back, but somehow never got up the momentum. The album title, art, track list, do give an idea what's coming. Hidden Place is a strong enjoyable start but I find Cocoon unpleasant and I am worried the whole album would be the sort of performative weird that really rubs me the wrong way. I like It's Not Up To You quite a bit but Pagan Poetry is too much. Frosti is undeniably beautiful. And so on through the album. Moments of genius and stretches of what might be genius but they didn't land with me.

There’s some interesting things happening sound and texture wise on ‘Vespertine’. It’s undeniably well produced but doesn’t sound dated for an album that’s 20 years old. Bjork’s voice is as clear and beautiful and piercing as ever, while the album as a whole is both ice cold, yet warm and inviting. I really like some parts of it, but other parts meander. Your own enjoyment of this record may well depend on how you feel when you put it on, and how much you can emotionally invest and drop into its overall mood and aesthetic.

Björk is always weird. This is her being weird and in love. Fillerish songs make way for the epic repose of the scattered three or four single worthy exceptions. Still. It’s an interesting and musically dense piece of art pop.

Does Björk have like the best discography ever? I'm not even sure this is her best.

'Vespertine' is Björk's fourth album, and is a combination between art pop and electronica. However, this album does contain concepts from a lot of other musical genres, which makes it hard to classify. This album performed well in Europe, but did not find its footing in America (which explains why I never heard this music). The theme of this album revolves around love and sex, and the vibes are chill, psychedelic, and erotic. The tone is soothing, timeless, warm but also cold, and would fit an evening alone at home by the fire, while it snows outside and the listener is wishfully hoping for a lover's touch. Do I recommend the album? Eh, it's not for me, but everyone should try it once.

It amazes me how she creates this mystical world where she reigns supreme.

Starting with "Hidden Place" it seems to pick up where her previous album, "Homogenic," left off, but then "Cocoon" takes the album in a more intimate direction. Definitely lends itself to headphones. Really like the textured beats, especially as they mesh with the string and vocal arrangements.

Strong interesting start. This coming off Homogenic is interesting, it feels like it could have been released in the last year. Love that instrumental oddness going on. First track has it all, orchestral Björk, weird beat Björk, instrumental oddities swirling around Björk, etc etc. Second track has some nice little poppy-sounding-beats along with interesting acoustic touches, lyrically it's interestingly explicit but pure in its intention. Oh man the Bass contrasting with the music boxes on Pagan Poetry is so fucking good, the push-pull of heavy/raw/powerful instruments with delicate twinkling of other touches+vocals is very powerful and what makes me really like Björk. This is definitely a winter album. Interesting Wiki tidbit: "With the rising popularity of Napster and music downloads, she decided to use instruments whose sounds would not be compromised when downloaded and played on a computer, including the harp, the celesta, clavichord, strings, and custom music boxes. Assisted by the duo Matmos, Björk created "microbeats" from various household sounds, such as that of shuffling cards and ice being cracked." Honestly there is a lot of interesting found-sound tidbits in the Wiki article that for a nerd like me make me happy. Sounds like the laptop was the studio for most of it, and apparently Björk does not get the credit for her work on it. Bummer. I'd say maybe a 4.5 or 5 but I will go with a 4.5 since not every track was unique enough to grab me compared to some others.

so this was class.... ive tried to get into bjork before but i could never really get past venus as a boy, so i was a bit hesitant about this album but about halfway through i was like oh this is amazing i want to listen to this over and over again preferably while on various substances.

i really loved just relaxing and letting this wash over me and i think it might be 5 stars if i listened to it a few more times! ive never listened to a bjork album before but now im definitely intrigued

Everything I know about Bjork comes from the X-Files movie, Dancer in the Dark, and the Swan dress she wore. Now, it turns out Hidden Place from this album was the song from the X Files soundtrack, and I listened to this song a LOT. She really has a style of electronic and pop that works. Her music is a combination of fantasy, nightmares, dreams, and like drugs. It's a trip for sure. I think in the realm of electronic pop, she's close to the best so far that I've heard. She plays with mixes and sound too, which makes for a unique listening experience.

Too experimental for my tastes. Very difficult to get through. Absolutely hated some songs, the others were mediocre at most. Honestly, didn't think I would dislike it as much as I did.

Bjork being Bjork.

Hi- Hidden Place, Pagan Poetry, Aurora, Unison Weaving the hollow and empty with grandiose and dramatic, synthetic with natural, the devious with the naive, listening to Björk is like watching a crystal-clear video stream glitching out on a flaky connection; It's poetic, flowing, and jarring. This kind of evolution of Björk's tapestry of duality is interspersed throughout Vespertine, bizarre, beautiful and disastrous. Hidden Place is an other-worldly (a term all too often associated with Björk's work) track that sets the tone for the 50 minute journey that follows, with Björk's signature struggled breathy crooning (Pagan Poetry) vs her wild belting of notes that echo off the back walls of time (Aurora), it's endearing as much as it is unsettling. Unison is both claustrophobic and expansive, just more opposites that get played off of each other which are part-and-parcel for a vacation through the strange world of Björk, a world that simply couldn't be anyone else's.

The thing that pisses me off about Björk is that it's all a fake. Like, you start to think to yourself, "It's not her fault that her voice is so breathy and anemic; it's just who she is. I'm a jerk. I should just let her be who she is." And then she closes her record with a powerhouse of a song, and it's like, "Wait, you were able to sing like that the whole time?! You were choosing to sound like a wounded animal?" I don't get it, man. Best track: Unison

There are no redeeming qualities to this album. It is awful. Do not listen.

Nothing catchy melodically or lyrically and while most of the album was inoffensive, some of it was actively offensive.

Not my usual thing but I respect what Bjork is doing. I overlooked her music in the 90's because the media focused on her portrayal as a kooky manic pixie dream girl and I assumed that her vocals were heavy on screeching and yowling. I was pleasantly surprised to listen to this album that was crafted with layers of texture, and now I think that (as with most female artists from the 90's) Bjork was overlooked in favour of her male peers.

I preferred Bjork's Debut album to this one, albeit I didn't have much time to listen to it repeatedly. 2 at best.

I like a bit of Björk, but wasn't really familiar with this album. I'm also a fan of that early oughties faux-vinyl-crackle glitchy electronica, so this was right up my street! Fave track - "Hidden Place", maybe - loved the harp on "Pagan Poetry" too....

Deep and intimate. By turns breathy and dreamy then suddenly out-front and powerful, you hang on every note for an irresistable listen.

First listen. Very interesting album. I need more listens to this one. I think this one will be rated higher in future listens but for now it is a 2/5.

Cold, haunting, but all around beautiful. The often spaced out soundscapes match perfectly with bjork's incredible voice. Although admittedly a little too long for my willingness to stick with this sound, I can see why many consider this one of her finest works. Favorites: Cocoon, It's Not Up To You, Aurora

Bjork at her most Bjorkish. Wears a bit thin in places, no real standout tracks, and it was about this time that Goldfrapp took it to a more interesting place.

Need to listen to more bjork. Reminds me a lot of radiohead

Hard to describe what this album is about but I feel it. Takes some warming up but eventually you realize you are in her world and her emotions come through leaving me feeling it all without fully understand it. I step out of this album as if I just left a theater. I experienced a piece of art that I want to go back to and experience once more. There’s more there and I’m excited to go back in.

A masterpiece

Not a bad record, not a gigantic Björk fan but I can appreciate her work and this felt like a great example of her work to get more acquainted.

This was my introduction to Björk, and at the time I had never heard anything quite like it. I remember being struck by how the music could be so soft and subtle but incredibly lush and layered

I love Bjork. So strange and unique, yet still catchy and listenable. This album is no exception. 4 stars.

Björk’s masterpiece. A stunning, sensual, beautiful record, delicate and stirring. Minimalist beats gently pulse, celestial chorus soar and Björk’s incredible vocals hold all together. It’s hard to think of a more imaginative artist working today, exploring her own passions, never following the fashion. But here she is, wowing the listener with an extraordinary album quite unlike any other.

I fucking love Bjork. Such interesting and moving music. Even the songs I'm not so into I respect cos its just such great music. Not on this album but Unravel is one of the best songs of all time

Time has mellowed me, I suppose; I enjoyed this more than I expected to. I don’t think it’ll be a regular repeat listen for me, but it’s pretty good

Bit weird

Quietly pretty. Bit boring, better for background. Cocoon is quite sexy and intimate, Heirloom and Unison are most fully realised song in the traditional sense.

An enjoyable listen but won’t hurry back

An amazing album that should score higher however the awful vocals detract from the experience. Could have been a five, at least Bjork's wailing is kept to a minimum.
