Eh, kinda just fine

Mark Mothersbaugh's lead singer - kind of grating voice Way poppier than expected Uncontrollable Urge is good, everything else is basically just a less good Uncontrollable Urge

Not my first choice for a devo album. It's alright

There's an ever growing group of people who have decided that getting Devo in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is the hill they're willing to die on. This group seemingly gets louder every year, and their argument always seems to be something like, "It's insane Devo isn't already in the hall." No, it's really not. For one, the Hall seemingly has a pretty easy process to determine election: An artist is eligible for induction 25 years after their debut album. That's a reasonable amount of time to build a body of work, and long enough to the point where voters would surely know whether or not an artist is Hall Of Fame worthy. And what's Devo known for, other than "Whip It" and it's quirky music video? Maybe an interesting Stones cover? This is a decent enough album, it sounds about ten years before its time. But let's stop pretending that Devo was something more than A Flock Of Seagulls with better press. Apparently Bowie and Iggy Pop were really into Devo and clamored to produce this album. Let's not forget Bowie and Iggy were also really into coke around that time, too. So I guess what I'm trying to say is I would have enjoyed this more if I knew the right coke dealer.

Devo is so weird & so punk

New Wave that recognises that human beings are devolving. Stick a flower pot on your head and join in. Best Tracks: Uncontrollable Urge; (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction; Gut Feeling / (Slap Your Mammy)

Really good

Ik vond dit best ok eigenlijk! Met Anke eens dat het ergens wel aan Talking Heads doet denken.

a little more generic talking heads, post punk new wave style

That Rolling Stones cover was a waste of time on an otherwise (fairly) enjoyable listen. This album did not change my life, and there were times I wondered "do I actually enjoy this or am I just listening?" Maybe I'm overthinking and this album had its moments but I ultimately just thought it was fine overall.

Odd punk-like stuff with a rolling stones cover. Not my thing, but I've heard worse.

I've always been more of an Oingo Boingo fan than a Devo fan, but having now heard this Devo debut, I am really struck by how similar their first albums are. I can see how people dismissed Boingo as a Devo knockoff at first. This whole album is a lot of fun, and makes me want to dive into more Devo beyond just their biggest hit.

Devo at the beginning were much different than the Devo the world came to know. This is a fun and bare album with plenty of good times.

Not my bag

I could've sworn I've had this one already

Rien d’extraordinaire et pas le genre d’album que j’aurais pense produit lar eno. Cest de la,punk adoucit. 3

Pretty revolutionary at the time. Saw them at Knebworth supporting Genesis of all bands. They certainly stood out with their white boiler suits and orange hats.

I feel like I was meant to love this but I found it just okay. I can't explain it, but it felt somewhat smug to me?

this is just discount talking heads lol

Like Talking Heads, these guys just miss the mark with me.

Yep, Devo is Devo. Never listened to a whole album but didn't disappoint. Quirky, minimal, affected. It's a vibe, but not one I see myself embracing very frequently.

I want to like DEVO; new wave sounds, angular guitars and synths, arty and strange aesthetic, willfully esoteric, but I think I can only deal with half of these songs. As usual, I'm put off by the bleated vocals, a style I can never get behind. As usual, the hits work for me, the rest, less so.

Please send help.

The misadventures of a scout leader and a group of cubs that is strictly off the record. Nothing happened here. They simply went camping.

Mostly fun!

I want to like Devo more than I do, I just have trouble getting into them.

I want to like Devo more than I do, I appreciate the schtick but the execution doesn't do much for me.

A previously dismissed band by myself due to tge crap tgey produced in the 90’s, pleasantly surprised by this.

5/10 obnoxious but not altogether bad

Annoying but in a more endearing way. 5/10

Divertido!

I liked it.

It’s okay.

First song is alright Bad I can't get no satisfaction cover

Likeable, interesting cover of Satisfaction

Niet al te speciaal, maar wel opgewekte muziek

Good album. A bit cheesy.

Rating: 5/10

weird and interesting especially for the time. Respect what it led to creatively, but aside from a few songs, not for me.

Bit whacky

It's alright

this is weird man. funny hats tho

D. E. V. O

Good album. Enjoyed the different style.

Messy, im not sure if i liket or i hate it

Uistinu jedan od kultnijih albuma koji meni nije toliko sjeo, mada je sasvim dobar.

Heard this kind of recently for the first time, pretty fun overall (3.5).

"You got both hands You got praying hands They pray for no man O.k, relax" (Praying hands) "Think I got a big mac attack Hold the pickles hold the lettuce" (Too much paranoias) Meh.

This is kinda like David Byrne if he got his hole once in a while but not too often because he's still David Byrne

Inicios del punk. Raruno.

Fun album from New Wavers Devo. Known mainly for their mega hit “Whip It” the band is so much more than that. They are one of the bands I think of when I hear the term “Art Rock”. They were clever in their theme and message they created as a group. I enjoyed “Uncontrollable Urge” and the cheeky song “Praying Hands” about masturbation juxtaposed to religion. Some real fun songs overall and out of 10 I would give it a 7.3

Pretty weird new-wave album with elements of art rock. Tracks are consistent but lack a strong connection or theme, 6/10.

1978, new Wave, Art Rock, Post punk, stabil

It’s fun at times but would serve itself better in a live setting versus a listening experience.

Weird and electronic and wacky. I like a the juice mostly. Didn't realize the Life Aquatic song was Gut Feeling. Two good songs (Uncontrollable Urge and Gut Feeling). A few fun songs (Space Junk, Satisfaction). A handful of songs that were not for me...3.5

Insane 80s

Pretty, pretty cool.

This morning I'm listening to Devo and their album "Q. Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!" recorded in 1978. I want to like this band a lot more than I actually do. I enjoyed the first track - Uncontrollable Urge, and the 2nd track I know from my own listening or maybe heard it in a movie - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. Which takes a song by the Stones I've heard a million times and makes it interesting again. There are plenty of interesting moments on this album, but it's not something I would put into rotation or come back to. Uncontrollable Urge might make it to my 'best of 1001' playlist. I love everything about this group, their name, and the all around general existence of this remarkable band. But I'm not sure this album is cohesive enough to really amount to something great.

It was ok. I really didnt care for the satisfaction cover but the rest was not terrible. Not my thing.

Oh the punk before the punk

Very ...peculiar. nice but not too much

Again the author just showing his love for goofy late 70s rock, but at least Devo is catchy. There are a few jokey nonsense tracks on here but also enough good shit that it wasn't TOTALLY annoying. 3/5.

Terceira tentativa de achar algo interessante neste disco, sem sucesso. Fraquinho!

Probably a good album that's just not for me.

Kjennskap: 0% Litt artig, litt slitsomt.

I didn't get into this one. It just didn't work for me. Also, it seems more punk than new wave which I'm not a massive fan of.

I'm out on this sort of sound, didn't get through this one. Not for me. Shout out Rob Dydrek tho

favs: praying hands mongoloid gut feeling/ (slap your mammy) rating 1.4/5

I’m not entirely sure because I haven’t listened to their other albums, but so far DEVO seems like a one-hit wonder with Whip It. I didn’t like this album too much.

Catchy riffs I like the length of the album The vocals and lyrics are a little odd Immediately ruined by Track 5 being outright ableist and mean

More less.

Some pretty nice guitar I have to say. Definitely very unique. Fav song is ‘Sloppy’.

Wtf is this album cover

i dont care for devo

pissed me off

If the best song is a Rolling Stones cover, and even that one not really satisfying, you can easily die without ever hearing this album.

DEVO has fun singles, but as a whole, I'm finding that I dont love their albums. They're just OK. Some goos ones, but this album fell flatter than I expected. 2.5

Mostly, I just don't like the vocals, but sometimes I also didn't like the instrumentation either.

Stilted melody. Hard to get past that honestly. 2 stars

The playing in this is by far the most interesting thing about this. The lyrics and the vocals are silly. Annoying

Quite chaotic but samey

Devo Maria

Teetering on uddershite by way of new wave. DEVO can have their roses for breaking the norms of 1978 standards. It has an okay punkish sound but it ends up just being very shrill and super unpleasant. Uncontrollable Urge saved this one from 1 star for me.

Classic Devo beats in the background but the songs were otherwise super weird - not my favorite

When I was a child I saw "Whip It" during an episode of Beavis and Butthead and ever since then I've been vaguely scared of Devo. There are nice moments on this, but I overall find them a bit annoying and a bit spooky. 2.5 rounding down.

Really not my thing

First few songs- this isn’t so bad. Rest of the album - oh, never mind.

A fun, spunky debut album by Devo. I remember when Devo went mainstream in the 80’s with “Whip It” and enjoyed them back then. This isn’t my normal style of music, but I thought it was a cool alternative to the norm.

Devo is Latin for “bad punk”. Don’t be fooled.

Ngl, I didn't get this. It sounded interesting but I just don't understand post-punk and new wave like that ig.

- "Uncontrollable Urge" has a fun, memorable hook. - "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" should've been left to the Rolling Stones. - There is such a thing as too much DEVO, and that amount is about 3/4 of a song.

Aggressively New Wave

Cualquiera como los outfits de Taro para salir a buscar minas.

No, no me gustó.

Concepts that I like put together in a way that just didn't click at all with me

I have friends that adore Devo. I get why they have so much hype. I admire their reason for their art, but the art itself doesn't do much for me. I considered increasing my rating by one star because BRIAN ENO but sorry no.

A surf rock inspired rock. It’s so California you can feel the overpriced housing and tungsten lights. It has it moments and plays into its musical theatre vibe hard but it’s just so weird it’s ramones inspired it’s silly. It’s not forgettable and it is different it just doesn’t resonate with me. It seems to want to play punk rock and surf but seemingly doesn’t really leave me with much of a impression instead feeling a bit scared and annoyed. The worst offender is too much paranoias and shrivel up the vocals just screech and while I like the guitar work and bass it doesn’t help save the other aspects this is cool to hear about the new wave influence on America but the quirky new wave doesn’t work for me because it’s trying to have its cake and eat it! I like some songs and I like what it’s trying to do but I don’t care for this band just because they do something interesting.

This did nothing for me

I don´t think I get it.

Satisfaction is a great cover. The rest of the album is good, though not in my wheelhouse. Devo definitely unique. High 2s.

Like a mix between talking heads and the Ramones? I don't know, kind of like the talking heads but less funky/interesting. I don't care for the singing, though I appreciate the creative songwriting and instrumentation, the combination of production and live elements. Strong 2 to a light 3

Muy buena banda sonora, pero tiene temas un poco extraños. Escuché más de este artista y no fue el álbum que más destaco, así que la puntuación es baja aunque había arrancado bien

4/10… art punk / new wave / *1978

Can see what sort of music it inspired, but this is weird new wave punk that's just too early to be any good.

I loved Mark Mothersbaugh in Yo Gabba Gabba!

I fully comprehend that this album is quite early for new wave, and will therefore be described as an influential and important album. I'm just seeing if I like the albums or not, and I wasn't wowed by this. Just quite a lot of noise with talk singing in the background. Ew. But there were some interesting musical choices sometimes

I’m sure Devo have better albums than this so not sure why this is on the list TBH

Komisch abgehackt

Saved? ✅ Would listen again? 🤔 Would recommend to anyone? 🤔 Would buy on Vinyl? 🤔

Disappointing. I hadn't heard this album, but I was aware of it's good reputation. I found parts of it to be irritating and smug. Other parts were decent and rocking, but not enough to save it.

I don't like these guys

appreciate experimenting but this is just too quirky for me

I do not feel much about this

Certainly one of the more unconventional albums in this project. Some decent punk-adjacent standout songs but a lot of the weirder stuff didn't connect with me. Shorter runtime definitely helped the album not overstay its welcome. Top tracks: Uncontrollable Urge, Gut Feeling/(Slap Your Mammy)

Q: Is this an influencer album? A: Probably. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Ever went to a museum and seen a canvas painted a single colour or left completely blank? Well that's essentially what I think post punk is doing. An attempt at a middle finger to the established arts but with little the viewer/listener can walk away with. Luckily this painting has some of the painter's hair stuck in it (the drummer's pretty good) so you can chuckle at that.

mmmm....

Catchy rhythmic sounds soon become tiresome in their lack of variation. Clever once, but not now.

Very poorly aged album - fun at times but the vast majority of this is truly annoying.

Not for me

Another "post-" album that is way too artsy. This time, they don't take themselves too seriously, but are unbearably silly instead. What is supposed to be playful and special just comes off as annoying and strange to me.

I can't get no satisfaction this. It did bring a smile when I remember the videos. But that does not mean I would choose to listen.

Fun album, but will not listen again.

2 / bit annoying

Had reasonable hopes for this, but no…

Au biz wild, au wenn biz besser und ahgnehmer wie Korn, werdet mich d Devos weiterhin nüme musikalisch begleite. Q: Wieviel Puntos vom Timon? A: zwei

Not really my cup of tea, but love the satirical approach.

In its best moments, it's sort of new-wave-y punk type stuff with some good riffs and hooks, but I'm not crazy about the vocals or production and just generally didn't really do much for me after two listens.

Who likes this? Not fun, just kind of abrasive?

That (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction cover was, is, and will continue to be heinous. I wish I could like all the rest as much as Uncontrollable Urge, but I just can’t.

Not for me.

The album is ok, couple familiar songs

2026.01.13.

Sounds too goofy, and too try hard chaotic. It's annoying and unlistenable. I dont belive anyone that likes more than 3 song on this album. Feel like artis that are trying to imitate what's hip and popular, I think they were aiming for avant-garde but it ended up giving homeless music. It's the type of music a homeless man picks up and is forced to listen to. But some song I kinda like, the last song was giving primus (the riff)

I'd be happy never hearing this album again in my life

Unbearable herky-jerky post-punk for the "Idiocracy was a documentary" crowd

We are Devo?

Dull and hard work

I didn't like this.

I mean, nonsensical lyrics and surf rock riffs with cool synths. Not my thing.

Now I understand why Whip It was a one-hit wonder. This wasn't a nice album at all, and it didn't even contain their one-hit. Gut Feeling / (Slap Your Mammy) was particularly awful.

I don’t know if you got an eighth of coke when you bought this album or if you got this album when you bought an eighth of coke, maybe a bit of both.

The influence, aesthetic, and concept are all there, I just didn’t like the music. It may be one of things I don’t get that other people swear by…

I suspect this has tried to take some of the more serious post punk aesthetic and put a bit of humorous take on it but some of it just seemed a bit derivative and childish as a result. Nothing particularly grabbed me, and there are other bands doing a similar thing much better.

Not really my cup of tea

Bootleg talking heads. I'll never think of this album ever again

Didn't float my boat.

Steamy nicks?

This didn't click for me. I appreciate it's absurdity and the energy that travels through - live shows must be great if you're onboard.

Interesting but not something I would put on.

Some old men making old men music

Ei oikein Devo iske. 1,5/5.

I am not sure about this album. It is really 80s synthpop but the ones that are so 80s that I just cannot bear. It was a chore to go through the album, the "Satisfaction" cover was not good, and the lyrics most times are...weird 2/5 I know they are important, but man, this is not for me

This album is not revolutionary by any means. I understand the Brian Eno, the use of synthesizers (that were a thing before you know) but I don't really care, I was bored. While it does slap at some points, it is also music I have heard lots, that could be made by any one else. The writing is moronic often ("she said sloppy", the use of yeah yeah yeahs). It also borders on offensive, Mongoloid and Gut feeling/slap your mammy, but that album is so minor that I don't know that it need to be said that much. It's not a one, cause I appreciate the edit to remove the laudation of violence against women in the Gut Feeling edit, and the fun moments, Uncontrollable Urge and Praying Hands are there. But I'll probably never listen to it again and be absolutely fine.

i’ve got an uncontrollable urge to turn this off immediately! spotify describes DEVO as “one of new wave's most innovative bands”. sometimes art can be innovative and also not good. no thanks!

pretty crap to be honest. No clue why anyone would want to listen to it

Eh, not keen. Some moments are alright and others are pants. What was that we are Devo thing all about? Mongoloid with a chromosome too many? Wtf?! Maybe it's going over my head, but I don't really get how that's considered hear-before-I-die-worthy.

Too much on a Monday morning.

Was interesting enough, a couple recognisable ones throughout. Like a talking heads-y version of the beach boys surf genre of music I felt best describes a lot of it. Middle of the road is fair.

It starts off fine. It's quirky, odd, kind of fun, but the longer it goes, the more it wears you down. By the end, I wasn’t sure if I’d listened to an album or endured an experiment.

Not my bag

this had some interesting tracks... but overall i still can't get behind the New Wave sound.

Gosh, here I just don't see what makes it so good. It sure is transgressive and innovative, but beyond the new ideas I didn't feel it brought much to the table. I love Bowie's and Eno's work, but here it feels disjointed, chaotic and all over the place, and while there's certainly merit to its brand of post punk, I didn't really like it. If I had to pick one, I'd say "Mongoloid" was the best. "Uncontrollable Urge" wasn't bad either. The "Satisfaction" cover was pretty bad on the other hand.

There's certainly better New Wave albums out there than this, and I'd suggest checking them out instead.

Kinda like Ramones meets The Beach Boys. Not bad, but it didn't blow me away.

Meh, kinda generic light-rock album

I just don’t like this genre. It’s fine but I don’t particularly like it. Sorry

I liked a couple songs but overall not my cup of tea.

Oh Man, one extra star for only being 34 minutes.

Really like the instrumentation, but i truly could not vibe with the vocals 😔

Hear it before. I appreciate how fun Devo are. But this album just didn't really have any bangers to me 2/5

Gains marks for having a great sound Loses marks for an awful cover of Satisfaction Loses even more marks for having a song called mongoloid Ahead of its time but worth leaving there

Ok 2/5

plinky plonky and i know i should love it because it is wonky but i dont i am sonky

Are we not annoying, we are DEVO? Too much gimmick for me.

Irritating talk-singing with surf rock riffs making this some Kind of Post Punk.

Their debut album. Post Punk / New Wave. Uncontrollable Urge is a nice punchy opening. Definitely an odd cover of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction as track two. Ha ! Beach Boys riffs mixed with eccentric Post Punk style and lyrics. Mongoloid, this track's music reminds me of Transmission by Joy Division. Love the quirky side of the album but overall it's a bit hit and miss.

the worst of the goofy genre

I tried really hard to like it, I honestly did. Just not for me though I see the appeal Fav song: (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

no thanks, not into old school rock n roll

Ei löytynyt uusia lemppareita kyllä tuolta.

I didn't love this but the energy is infectious and the songs are quite fun. I'm not really a fan of the yelpy vocals and Mongoloid.. well I would say it's not aged well, but was that acceptable in 1978?? I won't be returning to this

This is very self-aware new wave. Catchy, fun and at times a little too smart for its own good. Their cover of the Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction is clever but annoying on repeat listens. Devo tries to make being pretentious fun, and the idea of this record existing is better than actually listening to it.

Brought me back to my childhood. Good and bad. More listenable than I expected.

Nej, det här var inte min grej. Började helt okej men blev snabbt sämre och sämre och mest tramsigt i min bok.

Quirky and boring at the same time. Reminds me of talking heads but weirdly a little more listenable. I don’t hate it but I wouldn’t seek it out.

yeah well i don't know

Off the wall and hard to take seriously. Weird cover of satisfaction.

So I did some reading on this album, because otherwise I didn't understand its inclusion on the list. And well, respect to Devo for being angry leftists churning out satire. They get an extra star for their Ramones-like vibe. Unfortunately, the thing about satire is that it has a tendency to fall completely flat if the context is not present... And in this case, not only has the context not been preserved, but it has all aged like milk. If I can't listen to a song in public (and I'm pretty sure, for example that the term "Mongoloid" has been out of fashion since before I was born), I don't think it belongs on a list like this anymore. But maybe it's just too deep for me, and I'm the de-evolved one.

This is objectively worse than the Beach Boys, but it's definately going go get a higher rating. This isn't about quality, or musicianship, or any of that. This is distilled idiocy and I love it. New Wave is bad, and I like to think it knows its bad. All of the jams could have been written by a kindergartener who's eaten way too much Halloween candy. If the bass player has to play more than 4 different notes in a given section, it's a record. The song structure has everyone thinking "are they lost?" "did they forget there's another part to the song?" "is there even another part to this song?" Yes, some of the songs are bad. Some are offensive. Or both! But since I only have two brain cells, some of them make me grin. I want to believe his cover of Satisfaction has Mick Jagger rolling in his grave--he's not dead either? Rolling in his vampire casket then. The B-Side can fuck right off though. That was a waste of time that knocked us back to 2 stars. 2.8 for the A side, 1.5 for the B side.

Probably more of a 2.5, but still not very into it.

I can't carry a tune or play an instrument, and yet I feel like I could have done a better cover of satisfaction. That was painful. In general too quirky for my taste, and this album doesn't even have whip it, which at least the video made me laugh. 2.

Well... I just don't have many words I think... Similar to this album. I was just resting listening so it was actually quite peaceful, and I feel like unactively listening is very nice, but if I was in the mood for some really awesome music, I would not choose this.

Some of it is unlistenable gets better near the end.

Had a bit of an up-and-down experience listening to this album. Certain tracks were good, but others were pretty subpar. Devo's schtick involves a lot of being quirky/weird, so it's not surprising that their debut album would contain some off-the-wall stuff. While it succeeded at being odd, not all of it succeeded at being good. The flaws showed up early and reappeared throughout. It's good that the album was as short as it was, since I think any longer and it would have grown sour. It was getting grating enough as it was. For the most part, I liked the musical compositions on the album. It had traditional rock/pop components to the songs, with guitar, drums, bass, keys, and vocals featured. Though not completely similar to contemporary rock and pop acts of the time, the songs stayed true to the general song structure you might expect. What they did in those constraints definitely felt different, however, even decades later. The attempts they made at standing out were clear. For me, the hardest part to like was the vocals. Even where the song was strong musically, the vocals detracted from it. I'm not sure exactly why; they seemed too theatrical or intentionally over the top or something. It didn't happen on all the tracks, but when it was bad, it was really bad. I also didn't love how the album was constructed. Putting the cover of Satisfaction as the second song was probably a mistake. It felt like it should've been buried toward the end, or left off entirely. I also didn't find it to be a good reimagining of the song (side note- this is the second style-shifted Satisfaction cover I've gotten, and I haven't liked the alternate in either case). Some of the songs toward the end actually felt stronger than earlier songs, and I think I may have appreciated them more if I had heard them earlier on. I found this to be another instance where an album is carried by its high points, but overall not very strong. I'd guess that it is remembered for those high points as opposed to being celebrated as a whole work. As I've said before, the album as a whole is what matters for evaluating it's greatness. Here, the good parts are outweighed by the rest, which ranged from fine to not so good. It stays above "bad" territory, but isn't better than OK for me. Overall: 2.4/5

No me he guardado ninguna canción. Este grupo siempre me ha parecido un chiste. Sé que tienen sus seguidores y su importancia en la historia del rock, pero yo no consigo olvidar que todo tiene pinta de falso y hecho como una broma.

This album was very different at the time especially for an American band. Jocko Homo is still the stand out track.

Some nice punk elements in the album but otherwise totally skippable. One of the worst Rolling Stones covers I've heard.

p416. 1978. 2 stars. Soulless US electro rock. Once heard, immediately forgotten.

It was fun and quirky to begin with sure, but it just began to piss me off after 20 minutes in

kiepskie granie

I thought I'd like this way more than I did. This is a far ways away from "Whip It". I had heard "Uncontrollable Urge" before and thought that was fun, but I'm not so sure about this. I guess I'm just not a Brian Eno/new wave fan. This was a little too experimental and out there for me. What the fuck was "Too Much Paranoias"??? "Space Junk" was a lotta fun tho. Also, their version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" was NOT good lolol. Actual rating 1.5. Liked Songs: "Uncontrollable Urge" , "Praying Hands" , "Space Junk" , "Gut Feeling / (Slap Your Mammy)"

liked songs: More than a little silly, and a lot Brian Eno. Not a fan of the vocals. Or compositions. 2

Definitely not hip

This was dumb. I bet these guys felt real cool and edgy when they made this. They are this was stupid they just kept repeating stuff and it was really annoying. Everything about this album annoyed me.

never have understood the appeal of Devo-guess I'm just not cool/hip enough. and that's ok with me. another solid "meh" album

Your run-of-the-mill New Wave record without any noteworthy ideas. Plus, the singer is annoying. 2/5

Uhhh it was ok I guess… saw a review saying it’s like an inside joke you’re not apart of and I have to say that’s pretty accurate, very goofy, not necessarily bad but not enjoyable for me. I also felt like there wasn’t much to it, the vocals were also kind of annoying sometimes, the Rolling Stones cover was not very good aswell but certainly unique and in their style I have to say. Overall though a 4/10 still decent at some points I guess.

Sounds like the Rolling Stones but more electronic and experimental

Surfer/indie /electro weirdness. Funky baselines, odd everything else. It was an interesting listen, but not something I can see myself delving into anymore.

Not fun!

Couldn't bring myself to relisten to it. A little bit painful despite being a very creative and unique album.

I'm really not a fan of new wave. There are a few good songs on this album, but a lot of it is weird (Eno produced the record, so that explains that. He ruins everything he touches). Just another band that could be a clone of Talking Heads. Lame. And my fuck did they ever butcher the Rolling Stones song (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. Mongoloid // 2.5/5

1.9 Oh god. I never thought I'd hear a New Wave/Avant Garde cross over, nevermind it making the top 1001 albums you need to hear, but here we are. Went as well as you'd expect.

Certainly would be right there in the 1001 if the category were Quirky As Fuck. If you were a fan, then you're strange but that's fine by me. Enjoy. I didn't...

Don't care very much for this.

No thanks, not for me!

I got half way through this. It's not really for me, I don't think. I get the IDEA of DEVO and I think it's an interesting art piece or experience or whatever, but I don't really want to have to listen to it. It's a bit on the cusp. I can imagine I might revisit this in a different state of mind and like it better, but at the moment, it gets two stars, not a malicious two stars, but two stars.

Starts strong but ultimately devolves into fairly repetitious noise. I enjoyed the driving brat and 80s keyboard funky rock way more than any vocals or lyrics.

Okay, it was funny for a little bit, but this list definitely has too much of Brian Eno. Very original sound, you always expect unexpected, it's modern music made back in 70s, but it's just too annoying and boring. One album per list, please.

Interesting and light-hearted fun, but not something I’ll be coming back to.

dumb ass looking mf

Too annoying. Mongoloid is great though.

I like Devo conceptually. I am happy Devo exists. I don't really enjoy it though.

Different. Weird. Quirky. 1001 albums before I die worthy? Absolutely not. 1001 album worthy: No - 51/94

I don't think I really "get" Devo...

Fun album, first half had me toe tapping but last few songs dragged on.

Vocalist gave me Talking Heads vibes so looked them up and surprised that they're not the same person. This wasn't really for me, a bit too ironic and goofy. I loved Praying Hands though.

It felt like a parody of punk. I liked the music but the lyrics/singing wasn't great, though maybe that's the point? Wouldn't listen again.

I've heard of them before. Not a bad band. Overall, a fair album.

It was okay

The bones of a good album are here, the ingredients are all ready to go, and then they just completely ruin it with the pretentious schtick of whatever they hell they thought would sound like shit. Infuriating listen Best Song: Uncontrollable Urge Rating: 3.0/10 2 Stars

I was bored by this, it just seemed like more late Seventies sub punk blokes bashing away at it.

Aaaa baš sam nedavno navukla na njihovu stvar Girl U Want :) ovaj album mi je okej, ali imaju i boljih ako mene pitaš. Bit će malo niže zbog toga, 2/5, 4.5/10.

Like the audio version of a fever dream

It is fun, but I'm not feeling fun

Started good, went downhill fast. Pretty rubbish.

I get why people like this but it wasn't for me. It was basically a 3 but it pissed me off a bit that this seems to get so much praise for being a solid 3 in every way haha so demoted to 2 stars. It was fun in parts but the weirdo 80's singing with all that weird articulation and whooping and stuff just isn't for me. Also it's like they were kind of making fun of surf guitar rock a bit? not cool.

I know the album is a big deal for music history. I can see and hear why. Truly appreciate it. Overall, though, I only liked a couple of songs.

Devo’s kind of annoying.

Although I knew their name, I had never heard a song by Devo. Now I know that I didn't miss anything.

Why is Tom Brady on the cover? 1.82

weird, but good with it for the first half of the album, gets a bit much by the end

Expected better I must say

Are you Devo, I don't know. But I'm devo (devastated) this album made the list.

看封面就知道是听不来的post punk(

I wanted to like this so I could feel fun, but this was annoying.

Was never a Devo devotee. A lot of this is just annoying noise to me. 2.5/5

Paukut käytettiin A-puolella, mutta se olikin hauska. 50-luvun (ish) laulu ja kivat pikku melodiat. B-puoli meni toistamiseksi. Tai ainakin mielenkiintoni lopahti. Melkein kolme, ihan inasta vaille.

Livenä hyvä 3+, levyllä liian antimusiikkia minulle. Muodollisesti tämä on koukkuja täynnä, mutta käytännössä lopputulos välittyy raskaana kepeytenä. 2,5

Why was this so boring

Uncontrollable Urge is good, but this sounds like the B52's and early The Clash had a baby for better or worse. Not my ideal music, but not terrible. 2.5

This sounds like electronic baroque to me. The cover of Satisfaction is bonkers.

I get why these guys are considered a joke band. On one hand, yeah, it's a real rock CD, if one that is pretty sparse lo-fi garage rock. On the other hand, they don't sound like they're taking themselves seriously at all. "Mongoloid" and the title track are clearly intentional parodies of trends in prevailing self-important hard rock (to me, they most clearly sound like someone making fun of Blue Oyster Cult). Combined with the absurdist cover of "Satisfaction", you just get their impression that the entire raison d'etre of the CD is to point out what idiots other rock bands are. And it's not like they're wrong, I'd just rather listen to like an actual very strong rock performance. And this isn't it - it's more like slow Ramones with not as compelling a singer (although about equally talented). Also for what it's worth Zappa had been doing this for a while when this came out, and I think Zappa does it better.

1 star feels a tad too harsh, but this was a really tough listen. All the negatives of punk, specifically the vocals, but without any of the positives. Without any of the feeling. Just a janky, synthy layering of noise.

Listening to this right after The Residents and Os Mutantes probably worked in Devo’s favor. “Are We Not Men” is weird, but it’s a fun kind of weird that stands in contrast to the aforementioned experiences of aural frustration. I was feeling pretty good about Devo until “Jocko Homo,” when it wore out its welcome.

There is a lot of creativity on this album, it’s apparent that Devo was not trying to be another punk group. They helped form the New Wave genre, so I’ll give them points for that, but at the end of the day it’s hard to take this band seriously. And I don’t think they took themselves seriously, nor did they want to be taken seriously. It’s just meant to be fun, and it is. Just not fun enough to revisit for me.

Quirky at the time.

I am not Devo

Ei ollut kyllä omaan makuun tämä sitten ollenkaan, vaikka ihan passelia musisointia toki oli.

Did not enjoy this.

Lyrics were weird. Not a fan.

One of the few albums in this project that I bailed on--but I did make it 3/4 of the way through. I didn't like them then and I don't like them now. So irritating. It's like they exist so you can have the pleasure of turning them off.

Fun and upbeat, the surfy-rockabilly combo style didn't really click for me. Some questionable backing vocals decisions also. Who sings 'nyang' instead of 'la'

Majority of songs not my style. High 2

Rubbish!

Not for me

Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo is an album that clearly showcases Devo's unique, quirky style, blending punk, new wave, and art rock into something distinctly their own. The band's offbeat energy and unconventional approach are undeniably cool, and it's easy to see why they have such a dedicated following. However, despite its innovative sound, the album can be a bit of a mixed experience. Some tracks are catchy and intriguing, but others feel repetitive or just miss the mark. The robotic vocals and jerky rhythms, while distinctive, may not resonate with everyone, making it a challenging listen at times. While it's far from horrible, it's also not the mind-blowing experience some might expect from such an iconic album. There are moments of brilliance, but they are balanced with parts that feel less engaging. Overall, it's an album that may grow on you with time, but for some, it might not fully click. Devo's influence and originality are clear, even if the album itself doesn't entirely captivate. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 1 STAND OUT TRACK - Uncontrollable Urge

Despite the curious context of its creation being blessed by the lovely likes of awesome artists such as Eno, Bowie, Fripp, Pop, Cluster, and Can, I can’t just stand Devo’s debut.

Some songs were really stupid but overall 2 stars.

Pretty awful

Interesting style, but some tracks are quite annoying.

I’m only okay with devo. They really wear on you.

Not as bad as I expected, I kinda get it.

They’re certainly original. Completely unique in their sound. Possibly trying so hard to stand out that they just come out sounding annoying. I’m not really a fan of this at all, but I believe they achieved what they wanted. Q: Did I enjoy this album A: I did not. 2/5

Too much like Talking Heads for me

I think I need a much smaller dose accompanied by video of them in their funny wee hats to get enjoyment.
