Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Many of these songs were irritating

It's got Bowie and Eno on the desk, it's got attitude and distinct US new wave sound, it's just a bit difficult to listen to without thinking it's all mood and no songs. I get it, I just don't enjoy it.

Not for me I'm afraid

This was another throwback. Anyone recognize the first song like say from MTV. Jocko homo is a good one too. I never got into them much but I do like them. One of the guys went on to write every single soundtrack you've ever heard on a movie.

Quirky as fuck, but not catchy or memorable like Talking Heads. I'm sure it was fairly game-changing when it was released, but in 2023 it's just silly and annoying.

This album was a bit of a strange one, I’ve never heard of Devo before so based off the cover I was interested to check this one out, and I have to say it’s definitely unique. What makes Devo stand out is the eccentric vocalist paired with the up beat instrumentals, a perfect example of this is on the first track ‘Uncontrollable Urge’ which is filled with this killer guitar riff and an almost back and forth between the main vocalist and the backing vocalists like they’re giving 2 different perspectives. This is again seen on ‘Jocko Homo’ where the main lyrics are a repetition of the album title where the main vocalist asks the question and is answered by the backing vocalists. Another point that stands out to me is the mix of rock and some slight electronic influences, there are some tracks which are heavy rock and roll such as the first track and ‘Come Back Jonee’ and there are tracks with that almost futuristic sound like on the back end of ‘Mongoloid’. To be honest the praise kinda stops there as I find there are 2 massive things letting this album down, first is the structure of the songs. Unfortunately, most of the songs rely on the chorus to carry them and it’s alright with the cadence of the vocalist but it’s gets a bit dull when you know what’s coming next before you’ve even heard the song. Secondly, the lyrics are just bland. A very clear example is the track ‘Praying Hands’ which repeats “You’ve got your left hand, you’ve got your right hand, you’ve got both hands, you’ve got praying hands” it’s just a bit predictable. Also the track ‘Space Junk’ where I’m pretty sure they just start naming places around the world in a list which I don’t get. It’s a shame because the vocalist is really entertaining but a lot of these songs feel like chants at times and barely a nice tune, especially the last track which just sounds so weird and a bit sinister, almost like a cartoon villain. I think this band definitely has the sound to it but in my opinion a lot of the songs are lacking some key structure, would love to hear them do some longer tracks as that sort of energy can really boost a longer track. Nevertheless, I found this album a bit strange, I probably won’t return to it. 2/5

Not sure this is for me, pretty forgettable and dull

Fun record but very novel and annoying. This was great when I was 9 and wanting to pester everyone in the house. Punk, techno, surf, bubblegum pop... Devo is the musical equivalent to pop-ups ads. They've got elements of music I like but excessive and unnecessary.

I do not enjoy Devo. Makes me think a little bit of the Talking Heads and B-52’s. I did like the Stones cover and Johnny B Goode.

i like the idea of Devo more than the reality. Too herky jerky and paranoid for my taste. But kudos to them for being so weird and wired.

для 1993 года звучит очень устеревше, если честно; монотонно и скучно как-то

A parody, a satire, a statement. Apparently, devo is a shortened term for "devolution". These guys believe that the American society is devolving. They made sour tunes based on punk and accidentally started the terrible synth epidemic in '80s pop. Kinda surprised this was produced by Brian Eno. In short, it's fascinating, it's fun, but unfortunately, it's new wave.

Not for me

very repetitive

Not for me

New Wave just isn't really for me. Sounds at times like a punkier, dollar store Beach Boys. Standout is "Come Back Jonee"

Pouco mais de trinta minutos para conhecer este pós punk definidor dos anos 80, muitos teclados, empolgação e vocal característico. Conhecido e quase nada lembrado.

Genuinely found this spooky and unsettling

The cover for (I can't get no) Satisfaction! Buster just showed it to me like a few days ago. What a coincidence. Good start. But fades into meh. It's ok.

Feels ahead of its time, and I can feel its influence on other artists. Not bad, but not super my taste.

Aikamoista paskaa se oli tämäkin. Kuraviikot jatkukoon!

Alkaa tulla kisaväsymys vastaan ku tällasii levyi puskee eetteriin. Ei sysipaska nyt kuitenkaan

I thought I liked Devo (De-Evolution of Man)... this album is made me reassess that. I think I like the idea of Devo kore than I like the music. Still, this must have been a pretty eye opening album in 1978. Props for that. Uncontrollable Urge is likely the only song that I'll seek out again though. Gut Feeling was another highlight I guess. Shrivel Up ended on a slightly higher, but incredibly weird, note. Most of the songs ranged from forgettable to tolerable. I'm sure it was an important album for the progression of music, but it doesn't hold up. 5/10.

The first song was really cool but the rest very underwhelming

Not bad

Tight and repetitive. Jerky punk without the silly aggression and pointless noise. However, the musical repetition is not a huge step away. Very famous, but not that great - disappointing. The chapter in Simon Reynolds's "Rip It Up and Start Again" is illuminating and far more interesting than the music (see also Throbbing Gristle, which expresses loads of substance over actually anything resembling music!!!!!!)

The shouty vocals, the jumpy rythms .. not my piece of cake.

Rock and Roll if it was made by spastic drama club rejects. 2 hands cause at least this is something different. ✋✋

Didnt love it. Some songs were good and i enjoyed them alot but a few of the others brought this album down to a 2 for me... might have to take another listen when im more in the mood for it?

Annoying.

Q: Is this not shite? A: Yes

Endnervig. Ich sammle immer mehr Beispiele für schreckliche Alben aus den pre 90's

I mean...it was tolerable. Beyond that, a couple of the songs were actually okay. But this just really didn't do anything for me. I honestly don't even have anything to say about it.

Interesting tunes, genre I am totally unfamiliar with. Creative use of dissonance in a lot of the songs on guitar. Reminds me of The Police. From my favorite era, yet I only know the biggest hits.

I can firmly say I am no Devo fan. At least it was short. Not so much new wave as surf rock with programming.

I did not enjoy this. It was laborious to listen to and maybe I just wasn't in the mood, but they just came off as so winey. Would not recommend.

Fartcore band. Interesting album, but overall it was too far out for me

Every song sounded like a meme song

Since when have compilations been allowed. Its one of the better art school projects but its still a bit cheeky

I wanted to like it, but too much monotone for me.

2 The European alternate cover makes me hate this album

Kinda jangly and annoying

Dat je vindt dat andere mensen juist dit album moeten luisteren voordat ze doodgaan, is beyond me.

mid talking heads

I get where they are coming from and even where they are going. But this is not a patch on the great examples of the genre. Later stuff begins to sound like Depeche Mode and ABC. Cover art. What on earth is going on. Probably matches the music well.

Not my type tbh but I respect it

Not bad

A bit corny, but decent.

This is the new wave band Devo's debut album. Reviews were mixed at release, but have been more positive over the years. The early reviews were probably less positive because new wave music was still "new" and rubbed some critics the wrong way. This album has now been called a cornerstone of new wave music in America. And the album has been certified gold in the US. This novel music is catchy, comical, but impersonal and leads nowhere. It's best listened to in the background, and one shouldn't try to pull meaning from it too much. I liked some of the songs, but will not seek out more Devo music.

You can tell that they were trying to do something different, but it just didn't impress me

I don't like being shouted at. "Gut Feeling" was good.

I have always liked Devo, even though I didn't really "get" them when I was a kid. I liked the flowerpot hats and of course you couldn't get away from Whip It. Later I came to understand the commentary they are making on society, which makes Satisfaction doubly fun. That said, it is also the case that DEVO is best in small doses. Listening to a whole album at once is a bit much.

Not the Devo I was thinking of. What a shame. Anyone remember the guy who used to volley dead pigeons round the high street while singing about kicking someone’s girlfriends head in? He’s a bit like morrissey but way more poetic. This was shit though but I’m grateful it reminded of that little scamp so I’ll give it a 2

Lo: (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Jocko Homo Possibly my mood, but I couldn't get into this one. Guess I don't like Devo as much as I thought I did.

Ehhhhhh

An incredibly unique album. Pretty hard to compare it to anything else. Felt like it was a precursor to the 80s style. However, None of the songs really stood out. 4.4/10

I’m not into Devo

Not for me really.

Ehhhhhhh not really my speed.

Punk når der er værst... Ikke mange numre som er værd at genlytte. Slet ikke noget for mig

3/10. Did not enjoy. Sounded about as bad as The Dictators, but without the tinges of humor.

Quirky and fun. Will probably not listen again though.

Q: What did Bowie and Eno get up to between \"Heroes\" and Lodger? A: Not much, apparently

there is a specific time and place for this and only then will it be a bop

New wave. It's good, but gimme some Idoli instead.

Slick band, but titles and themes haven't aged well

Listened to it twice and it annoyed me both times.

Pierwszy DEVOWY albumik, calego nie slyszalem wczesniej, a jedynie slyszalem kilka trakow, bardzooooo nev wavowy sound, za ktorego sukcesem komercyjnym byly w szczegolnosci nazwiska za plecami bandy, bo rekomendacje Bowiego i Brajanka Eno juz same w sobie stanowia o tym, ze ktos tego poslucha, pierwsze skojarzenie jakie przychodzi do glowy, to prototypowy remain in the light of gadajacych glow, podobny koncept punkowatosci owinietej w nowa fale licznymi synthami, na tym materiale az dajacymi po uszach, lirycznie prowokacyjnie o dalnach, religiach, smieciach, coonsumerowanie i kapitalizowanie i powrot do monke, przy czym tworza swoj weird wizerunek wystepujac w skafandach guglach i innych akcesoriach dziwnosci kosmiczno szambowej co nadaje im nerdowego imidzu, o ile lirycznie jest dosc roznorodnie, to melodie sa praktycznie na jedno koptyo zmasakrowane wszechobecnymi dzwiekami synthow, z tego wyczytalem to brajan wlasnie sforsowal taki pompowanie w syntha, bo z bowim mieli wizje bandy przyszlosci i chyba troche w tym racji, bo stuff bowiego z poznych 80/90 melodycznie dosc przypomina to co tutaj sie wyprawia, poza orginalnymi kompozycjami pojawia sie tu takze cover rolujacych kamieni, czyli i cant get me no satisfaction, na plejce mialem juz otwierajacy kawalek uncontrollable urge, dodam jeszcze too much paranoias, najbardziej talking headowy trak albumiku, najbardziej wnerwiajaca rzecza tutaj jest mix wokalow, ktory brzmi jakby byl spiewany z glebi wanny, ale to jest pan brajan eno dla ciebie, czy to u2 czy headsy zawsze musi zastosowac ten efekt

It's funny because one day before this album I listened to something from "New Order" expecting something like this Devo album and found that I didn't know New Order very well. I didn't know Devo so well too, but my expectations were all achieved and these expectations were an album with a lot of synth-rock without much meaning....well that's not men, It's Devo. The Wikipedia link was interesting.

New wave, post-punk. Un poco todo igual

Not really my kind of punk

Noah’s fence but idk if I would actually call this ✨music✨

Niet echt fan van new wave, maar uncontrollable urge is wel een fijn deuntje

Not a fan of this one. It's quite weird and I have to admit that this is probably a kind of album that would grow on me with multiple listens... which I'm currently not willing to give it.

This nerd rock group's titles didn't age well, but a few good songs.

Not sure about this one. I'm aware of devo, how avantr Garde they were, amazing look and distinctive sound especially for the time. But not for me. Gave it 15 minutes, the songs were so samey.

@@. weird stuff, two okay tracks.

I hated this at the start it gave me a headache. How many of these are covers? Lots of it sounds like bad Talking Heads. I convinced myself that this was good by the middle but then I was so happy when it ended. Soo bawlz indeed

Cute... soll vermutlich witzig sein. Ist leider nicht meine Motivation Musik zu hören. Instrumental gar nicht so schlecht, aber der „Gesang“ schwankt zwischen nervig und anstrengend.

I fail to see many positive things about this album and kind of music

Højt tempo, new wave punk rock, alternativt, nyskabende

Yep, it's punk. Complete with a goofy, unwieldy title, a pop-art close-up of some dude's face, and scattershot song quality. Mothersbaugh's vocal is unequivocably crap, so it's a good thing the other instruments half-succeed at covering it up. Generally, bands endorsed by Bowie, Eno, and/or Iggy Pop have only a very low chance of actually sounding good. And it's usually the vocalist's fault. Though the actual quality of the compositions fails to pull its weight too. Aside from maybe Uncontrollable Urge, none of the songs are that interesting or coverable. Structurally very repetitive, with little variation within or between different tracks. Melody-wise, it's a somewhere between a barren wasteland and a dumpster fire. If you had to pick a song from 1978, be honest: would you really fire up Spotify and type in Shrivel Up? Or would you gravitate to Sultans of Swing, or Roxanne, or Heart of Glass, or Just What I Needed? Yeah. This album's got nothing on its contemporaries. The lead vocalist sings the quickfire "yeah"s in Uncontrollable Urge with so much conviction that one can easily ignore the fact that the singing is pretty bad. Good driving riff (though I'm sure I've heard it dozens of times before). That cover of Satisfaction... hm. The source material is great, I guess? The positives end there. DEVO's performance of this heavy 60s cultural staple is limp, thin-textured, and the vocals go all over the place without really committing to any enjoyable melody. That percussion also gets much too repetitive – making 160 seconds feel like a lot longer. A quick Google search tells me "mongoloid" is an outdated and extremely offensive term. ("It became obsolete in 1965 when the World Health Organization (WHO) officially dropped the term in response to formal complaints from the Mongolian People's Republic.") It comes across as a cheap knock-off of shock-value titles, à la Lennon's 1972 song about women. Unfortunately, it passes as one of the (sonically) better songs on the album. Gut Feeling / (Slap Your Mammy) is another song that sounds pretty good yet I seriously hesitate to add to my Liked Songs playlist. Three later tracks – Jocko Homo, Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin'), and Shrivel-Up – take a rather opposite approach, going for both shock value and lack of quality. In Jocko Homo, we get relentless repetition of the band's apparent catchphrase ("we are Devo / we are Devo" ad nauseam). Cool, I guess. There are plenty of bands I dislike where I can at least fathom, to some extent, how other people might enjoy them. Not this one. 1/5 Key tracks: Uncontrollable Urge, Praying Hands, Gut Feeling / (Slap Your Mammy)

a waste of 34 minutes tbh, didn't like it

Fuck me the last load of albums I've had on this have been awful... Glad I've already sunk 4 years into it otherwise I'd have given up... ... Anyway, turns out I hate Devo.

Not for me. DEVO sounds over-intellectual, under-produced. Annoying vocals.

Devoid of any listening pleasure. Mongoloid is poor taste now, but it was even then to be honest.

Okay 1001 we had our fun. We can stop doing weekly genre pulls. This album annoys me. There’s nothing fun here. It wants to be cute and quirky but it’s just awfully annoying background music. Actually can it even be background music? Too much paranoias was such a tough listen. It makes sense that the most popular song off the album has no singing until half way thru. This feels really punky but also has a lot of poppier Elvis Costello type tendencies. The only issue is it’s just not good. I wish I had more of a write up, I just really didn’t enjoy 🤷‍♂️

No. I don't like it. I don't get what I should like. It feels sloppy, amateurish, and uninspired.

Not for me. 1/5

Favorite Song: None

Marqueur d’une époque mais nul 2-/5

this is what happen when that weird friend who have a voice they think is hilarious but is just annoying make a album. Devo did have some cult following and cultural significance but this album don't include their most famous track. I don't get the humour to be honest it's mostly annoying, so to me it feels like a failed humour band.

Absolutely nothing about this album piqued my interest. Not the vocals, not the production, not the composition... absolutely nothing.

Devo More like De-No

I would rate this a zero if I could

Wtf is this

Just didn't speak to me at all. Some bands just aren't for you and Devo are one of those for me.

That's a UFO of music. In a bad way.

Uncontrollable Urge is a good enough start. Post-punk might have been coined after hearing this song. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction made it into Casino when Ace and Nicky are starting to lose their grip. Whip It was in the movie too. I like covers of great songs generally, particularly when they do something different. There's things to like about it...but definitely some things not to like as well. It's interesting to say the least. If this is post-punk it is also unfortunately also proto-New Wave. Jocko Homo is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. This is not good but it is short. It's like if the Ramones were nerds. I would wager that Les Claypool was listening to Shrivel-Up when he wrote the theme to South Park. They're like worse Talking Heads.

The worst thing I've heard in years, maybe ever

Started to play the album this morning, and it faded into my working day- almost like I forgot it was on, like a white noise....not for me.

Not the biggest fan of this album

I hated this

Maybe it needed a particular frame of mind and I just wasn’t in the mood

Aika rasittavaa huumorimusiikkia, lukion tiedostavat pojat varmaan tykkäsivät

I’d forgotten until today that I actually bought the lead single from the album, Jocko Homo/Mongoloid back in 1978. Listening today I’ve no idea what I was thinking of and shows how much your tastes can change. But that is not quite right as there is loads of music from 1978 which I still treasure, adore and play regularly but not this. Despite Brian Eno being involved in production this album sounds very thin. The treble really does need turning down. Not Brian Eno’s finest moment but if Wiki is to believed he did try to change things but Devo refused. So the mystery continues why I bought the single buried within my 7” collection. I never play these at all now but have taken a look today. The single is contained within a fold out sleeve and my copy is still immaculate as is the actual single. Rarely played I guess. So I checked out Discogs to discover it’s worth over £22. I could therefore say that I bought the single as an investment but I’d be lying. 1/5 8/11/25

Retards pretending to be smart

Not for me.

I know DEVO is beloved by their fans, but for me, most of this sounds like experimental electronic music. Everything about this music is what I really dislike about 80's "nerd" music. Its all high-pitched and at a frantic pace. It doesn't make sense, but even the Weird Al song: Dare to Be Stupid, which is a parody of DEVO, is a song I just cant stand. I am towards the end of the album and I have to admit to dancing in my seat a bit. But its Shrivel-up, which isnt as high pitched as a lot of the other stuff.

I hated this album.

A little while ago I read Maynard James Keenan’s biography - he liked Devo so much he named his son after them. So I thought, I love Tool, maybe I’ll love Devo too Wrong. This was awful and I hated it. It sounded to me like first tracks chords are a straight up rip off of Led Zeppelin’s Misty Mountain Hop. Some of the lyrics have not aged well, or maybe were always in poor taste. The whole thing really grated for me

Did anyone producing this have ears?

fuck Devo and fuck everything they stand for.

Q: Did DEVO just learn what music is, or do they just suck? A: Yes.

is devo dead yet? Please say yes.

total bullshit how did this even end up on the list? 34 minutes wasted

No absolutely not. The riffs were promising but everything else blew. 2/10

Seriously it’s just noise. It’s not ‘groundbreaking’.

Nej fy fan. Hatar den här typen av musik. Skrikig och skräniga utan något att se fram emot. Covern på satisfaction suger och övriga låtar är provocerande dåliga. Antar att det är grejen, medvetet avskalat. Hatar det oavsett.

Not for me. 1/5 - SC

Not for me

This is the hundred fifteenth album I’m rating. I've only listened to Whip It, and I didn't like it. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Uncontrollable Urge, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Praying Hands, Space Junk, Monogoloid, Jocko Homo, Too Much Paranoias, Gut Feeling/(Slap Your Mammy), Come Back Jonee, Sloppy (I Saw my Baby Gettin'), and Shrivel-Up. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - A lot worse than the original. All in all I liked 0/11 songs. You know its bad when the best song on the album is a bad cover of an actually good song by a good band.

Jättebra om man omedelbart vill ha huvudvärk

This was terrible. I can't believe there are people out there who would have purchased this album expecting to be entertained. I can't believe the band could write this and think it sounds good. Many of the songs just sound like a bunch of kids mucking around with instruments in a high school music room. It only gets a 1 star because I can't give it a 0.

Not for me

Hard to justify a rating for this one, it was kind of crap. Couldn’t get past the weird tones and voice-like singing, it feels like it’s trying too hard to be something and the musical element is then lost, 3/10.

It solidified which song I liked because the entire album was rancid to my ears and my overall sense of world judgement. To be fair, it's just a white guy shakily crying out lyrics over a weird 70s vibe rock beat. We love that right? I liked that it had spirit, something fun and forgettable kind of like a messy one night stand but it did drag on. It also left a bitter sad taste in my mouth which one night stands often do. Im glad i can leave this in 1993. The lyrics are unhinged, unserious but overall unfunny. It's giving 'look at me I'm edgy and you won't get it haha I'm so satirical right" - No. Fave Songs: - Praying Hands

This gets a 1/5 for the Satisfaction cover alone. The rest of the album was pretty bad too, but that was a particular low point of the album.

Nix für mich.

Very unpleasant to listen to and they ruined a great rock song by doing some weird new wave shit

This is the worst Talking Heads rip off I've ever heard.

Might be because I was in a bad mood this morning but this album made me irrationally angry

Never heard from this band. nothing missing.

annoying

Pretty much pure crud all the way from start to finish...

I never tried to listen to Devo because I always hated Whip It.. listening to this album changed nothing

Mongoloid, sloppy, the rest of it was really just not for me. Even those 2 weren’t very enjoyable.

This is odd. I don't really like the shout-singing with de-emphasized enunciation. For me, this is kind of cringy throughout. There are some really great instrumentals and backing music, but the singing brings it down a lot for me. Especially since that's what's emphasized in the balance and mixing. This is just a miss for me. There isn't really a whole lot that I like or enjoyed from this album, and I could have lived without hearing it. Favorite Song(s): Uncontrollable Urge

My ears are bleeding from the torture

Entendo que a banda foi além do padrão, o som é bem diferente e malucão, frenético, nervoso. Porém, a mim soou bem irritante. Passo longe.

Not surprised to see that the hack Brian Eno was behind this. Total shite.

Audio poison.

Don’t even know where to start with this one. No idea what to expect having never heard of them, but I mean what even was this!? Guitar riffs, okay. Random synth and noises, sure. Off beat talky singing, ehhh. All mixed together? I think this one’s for the bin for me. Too many repetitive riffs that overloaded my sensory-limited brain

New wave, new ass album

Did not like at all

Not for me. It doesn't deserve a 1/5 rating though, so I will give it a 1.5/5 rating.

I’m not sure how anyone can listen to this album normally. It’s just so bad. Top tracks: Uncontrollable Urge

1. urge - 1 2. zatizfaction - 0 3. praying - 0 4. junk - 0 5. mongoloid - 1 6. jock homo - 0 7. paranoiaz - 0 8. gut feeling - 1 9. come back jone - 0 10. zloppy - 0 11. zhriverl up - 0

certified shite.

One hit wonder? Can't listen to his voice for more than 1-2 songs.

I didn't think new wave could be so one-note? The music had its fun parts but the vocals man, so monotonous. Talk-singing does not work for all artists I'm afraid. Neither does making covers of very popular songs, only to remove nearly every ounce of soul that the originals had. I think the answer to the question "Are we not men?" should be "No, you are soulless monotonous robots."

Not for me...

Not available on Apple Music France :(

Got exhausted by the fifth track. I feel like relapsing to noise again. Was reading a vn the other day, it had a very nice earthquake sound effect with falling trees and metal-on-metal sounds. Would prefer listening to 35 minutes of that instead

I hate the album cover, I hate the album name, I have the band's name, I have the image they uploaded to represent themselves on spotify, I hate the image they uploaded to their "About us" section on spotify, I hate every single song in the album and I hate each and every track name in this album

The best thing I can say is that it was music and a short album

Not an album I’d ever listen to.

Did not care for this album.

Not my style - 1/5

Not my taste

Fuck this album

I could only listen to the first few songs before I noped out.

New wave is absolutely terrible

Not a fan.

Its okay not my style at all. Didnt like anything in this album

This album is a bigger disappointment than your dad going out for a gallon of milk and never coming home. While it wasn't quite as bad as Echo and the Bunnyman I somehow hate it just as much. Not a single track on this album has a highlight. No part of this album was memorable in anyway. This is what happens when a group gets Eno to do production and then rejects the majority of his ideas. Album should be titled "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Drivel"

I’m not sure if I’ve heard of Devo before. I did a bit of googling and it looks like the singer dresses similarly to the singer of TWRP, but I imagine that must be a coincidence. Anyway, let’s give this a listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Praying Hands I’ve never been a fan of this era of punk, and Devo has unfortunately not changed this. The music just isn’t interesting enough to me, the vocals are too simple, and it generally struggles to keep my attention. Also, it does bear saying that there are some really strangely named tracks here. I don’t really want to name them specifically as it seems somewhat offensive, but you can look that up if you’re interested. Overall, this just wasn’t my kind of album.

I get why everyone hates this

cool... not sounds dumb

1/5. Boring and annoying. I listened to it three times just in case but could not latch onto anything worthwhile. Like it sounds like they are having fun but it’s just a worse talking heads. It’s not great honestly.

Properly, and I mean super properly, shite

I always wondered why people got really into Devo. This made me wonder why more. Half-ass sounding cover of Satisfaction. Some really high instrumental notes were cut off by vocals coming in. The yelling and stuttering syncopation were just not for me. Whole album sounds unenthusiastic and lacks emotion. Not insufferable, but not good.

I thought I may quite like this after the first track, but the rest is catastrophic. Also, some very questionable song titles. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: Uncontrollable Urge Date listened: 11/03/23

Is this music?

Im sorry that i can not vote 0 star. It was terrible.

uh, this album was decidedly not for me. it was a struggle to finish listening. i like new wave and i like punk, but devo's album missed the mark completely for me. it was just weird--maybe too punky? the only devo song i know, "whip it," is much more synth than punk, so that abrupt difference didn't help either. i do try to find a positive thing in every album: the heavy guitar sound ran the album.

Not very good. Might have influenced a music genre but it was pretty hard to listen to. I would not willingly listen to a single song on this album again.

Now I know exactly why this album didn’t ring any bells. P.S. I’m very curious as to the justification for including this album in this list. Maybe someone got confused with the Albums to Die From list.

vermoeiend

Tja, wat moet je hier nu weer van vinden? Ik heb het geprobeerd in ieder geval...

Hier was ik al heel snel klaar mee. Verschrikkelijk!

This was something else, and not in a good way. The lyrics were terrible.

This album belonged in the 80s. I don’t mean that as a compliment. Truly the worst cover of (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction ever.

talking heads with an ironic adult daycare aesthetic. the sonic equivalent of drinking a cup of warm gravy: an absurd concept that's unpleasant to get through.

Uhhhhh. Why is this even a thing? “Satisfaction” was wayyyyy too forced and when you have to force satisfaction on someone, it just ain’t it. and Mongoloid made me vomit up my ☕️ Let’s just pretend this album doesn’t exist, k?

It's a feat to be as consistently obnoxious as this album. Judging people by their music taste is a stupid thing to do, but I genuinely don't understand why this would ever be on a list of "albums you must hear before you die".

so bad

I thought I would like this album but I did not. I think it's just where I am in life - the quirky paranoia new wave just isn't where I'm at right now. Full respect to Devo though - maybe when I was 18 it might have struck the right chord, I could easily imagine that. But I am now in the demographic where I'd rather listen to the episode of 99% Invisible that discusses the story behind the album art than listen to the album itself.

No words

Really couldn't get into this album at all

I gave up at the beginning of the sixth track, having finished only the first one. I'm really not sure what they tried to accomplish with this album, or why people would like it. I can see that not taking themselves seriously is part of their whole thing and also how the approach to music was something new and maybe even interesting at the time. Their approach to songwriting and structuring may have been influential for later new wave and alternativ bands. But it just sounds godawful. It seems entirely soulless and devoid of any emotion or really anything that makes me want to hear any of it.

Man, this album was obnoxious.

отстой полный

Agradable muy depeche o talking heads etc irrumpidor del pop, nada muy destacable

This has got to be the most repetitive albums of all time. It's like it was designed to make me irritated. They repeat the same 4 words per song and there is no progression in the backing track, only a constant tune played over and over and over again. Thankfully most songs are less than 3 minutes, a testament to how vapid this album is.

Getting to the end of this album was a labor. Will actively avoid listening to any part of this album ever again

Why would I listen to DEVO when I can listen to Oingo Boingo? Any track off of Dead Man's Party or Only A Lad is miles ahead of this. The only good DEVO songs are on Freedom Of Choice anyways.

Nomás por destrozar I can't get no satisfaction.

La verdad es que dos estrellas ya se me haría mucho.

Rotete

CLASSIC.
