I think getting the PJ Harvey albums backwards was the incorrect way to do things, because I was surprised by "Rid of Me", and I'm equally surprised and blown away by this one. It's got a swagger to it. I love the strange, jerky rhythms it works with. Maybe I'll give the newer records another try. Favorite tracks: "Water", "Dress", "Hair"

Good PJ LP that sits at a nice intersection between her more aggressive songwriting and catchier, radio-friendly side. Can’t say any of these tracks will stick with me, but they’re well-executed and raw so I can’t ask for much more.

Like it. So much to hear and feel. Seems a bit raw and mixed poorly at times, leaving the lyrics secondary to the instrumentation. But overall I like it.

PJ is cool

A genre of music that I would not list among my favorites 3 years ago, this list has really made me appreciate the sub genre of 1990s female-led alternative rock. Stuff like Garbage, Hole, Sleater-Kinney, and PJ Harvey. So thanks, list! Thlist.

Raw and powerful, PJ Harvey channels Patti Smith for her debut album. This record fits perfectly among the early 90s indie and grunge scenes and still holds up well.

Powerful, raw, emotional songs. A cohesive album of high quality, as one might expect from a powerhouse songwriter such as PJ Harvey. I am a little surprised there's not a remastered version of this, as the mix seems a little muddy and dull.

The more albums I listen to by PJ Harvey, the more I'm convinced she's the true queen of rock. And it all started here.

Strong debut, her other work is definitely stronger in my opinion but this is a solid, raw album that is pretty emblematic of her style.

Spiky, yes, and energetic, yes, and certainly edgy, too. Let England Shake is a vastly better record; this is above average (and not by a ton), with three plus-plus songs, “Happy and Bleeding” and “Sheela-Na-Gig” and “Dress." Editors of 1,001 overrate PJH; 0.4% is too great a proportion.

This album was full of raw, dirty guitar sounds and grungy female voices. And while it wasn’t fully for me I could totally understand why this could be someone’s favourite album. Now give me the Last Living Rose and I’d be all over it.

HL: "Sheela-na-Gig", "Water", "Hair", "O Stella" Idk why I had such a hard time summarizing my experience here. Yesterday (the 9th) I listened to it with no distractions, yet I still had to listen to the whole thing again today (the 10th) to give a proper rating. Apparently this is "real" PJ Harvey (I had Let England Shake as my introduction to her, which doesn't really evoke her sound on the early stuff). I think the first listen, I just heard grunge. cowpunk. 90s angst. not really my thing. And on the 2nd, I heard a lot more. funky time signatures. funky cello. unexpectedly heavy percussion on "O Stella". fury. Either a 3 or a 5, so I'll compromise a bit here. August 9, 2023

A little too indie for me but I liked it more than other stuff, & PJ (to the extent of my knowledge) did this relatively early. A lot of the songs are about men (some are good, some are eh). The second half of the album is when it gets good. BT - Oh My Lover - Plants and Rags - Fountain - Water -

This is right down my alley but I think I just heard it on the wrong day. I'll give it a go again down the road.

Quite good.

Highlights: "Dress," "Happy and Bleeding," "Plants and Rags," For so many 1-section songs, surprisingly diverse, if not always strong -- the opener might be the worst on the album. Some of the songs sound prescient of stripped down '00s mall rock, others are Siouxsie with a Sonic Youth veneer, and a few sound like the thrashier grunge of acts like The Toadies. Hard to call it all innovative, but there's lots of potential in the vocal performance and some strange harmonic choices. Decent quality throughout and some memorable pieces.

Not a huge PJ Harvey fan. This is certainly better than Stories from the City but I've yet to find an album by them that makes me think more then "meh" before abruptly moving on and forgetting about it. I can see why this appeals to some people, I'm just not those people

I wish I was obsessed about anything as much as Polly Jean Harvey seems to be about water. This one has the distinction of being on Kurt Cobain's infamous hand written list of the 50 greatest albums, but if Cobain would have lived longer, he would have had two or three different PJ Harvey albums listed instead. As it stands, this is a remarkable debut that serves as a foretaste of the feast to come. My gut tells me I should just slap a 5 on any PJ Harvey effort that appears here, and that wouldn't be wrong (as of this writing, I'm in the 4.5 stars camp, but I'm curving up). Legend has it that this was the only album Polly Jean believed she would be allowed to make and therefore threw everything she had on it. Thankfully, she had a lot more up her sleeve and was allowed to make a slew of incredible albums.

No iconic songs on here that I had heard before, but a solid album I thought. Pleasant to listen to.

Worthy. Not dull, but...you know. A specialist taste. (Odd that I've like PJ much more over the years. Has she matured or has she sold out? depends on one's point of view, I suppose)

The way her breath is cut short when she moans "Oh my lover / You can love her / You can love me at the same time" tells you everything you need to know about PJ Harvey. From the very first second of this *raw* debut, this particular moment tells you everything about the sort of disturbing-yet-oddly-enticing world Polly Jean wants to convey to her audience. It tells you she's a unique talent with a unique voice, both seductive and scorching, and that when *Dry* came out, she was about to become one of the most important artists working in the rock idiom for many decades to come (and she did become exactly that, did she not?). I don't even really feel the need to list all the gems in this record. There are too many of them anyway: swampy rockers such as "O Stella", "Dress" or "Sheela-Na-Gig" ; slower menacing bluesy cuts like "Oh My Lover", "Victory" or "Happy And Bleeding" ; hypnotic odes to love and lust such as "Fountains" and "Water"... And so on. They're all great. 5/5, what else? So awesome, so powerful, so PJ Harvey. This was her DEBUT no less. Fearless, bold, incredible. A true pioneer and her influence is under-rated.

It's just OK. Not crazy about the sound of the band; pretty meh 90s alt type stuff. Her vocals are expressive but nothing I'm particularly drawn to. I do hear flashes here that intrigue me. Interestingly abstract lyrics and plenty of passion. I'd be interested to hear one of her later albums, but not a huge fan of this one. Best song: Dress

The album is quiet, had to be turned up from where I've listened to every other album. Definitely seems to follow the path transitioning Punk to Grunge in the early 90's with hints of Indie.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam. Allemaal goed en wel. Maar PJ Harvey kan toch ook wel stevig goeie muziek maken!

It has the authenticity and energy that I love about indie music and at the same time, it has the dirtiness of early grunge. Quite nice.

Didn’t really connect with this record. I like this female vocalist more than others, but a lot of the songs are bland and repetitive.

A bit challenging of a listen, but i like the raw emotional songs that have an occasionally aggressive musical energy. Oh My Lover and Water work best for me, though the album is pretty engaging.

Lyrics is a bunch of non-sensical emo stuff, not much going on with the instrumental. Overall quite bad and I can't decide between 1 or 2 stars. 3/10

PJ Harvey has that "goblin guarding a stash of gold" vibe. A true icon. You go girl. This album sounds like Björk if she actually made music. Or maybe like Patti Smith if you dipped her into hydrochloric acid. I don't like how I can see her nose hairs on the album cover though. That's not funky fresh, I'm afraid to say.

Chill guitar riffs with great voice

Well it’s PJ Harvey with some great great songs - Dress, Sheela-na-gig, oh my lover… not her best overall record but a strong one nonetheless that is always fun to revisit for me.

The dynamics were all over the place and the track with strings made me grit my teeth but it is still better than some of the 2s I've given out.

Pretty solid, didn't give star blow me away though.

Polly Jean is so cool and this is such a strong debut. The band rocks, the lyrics/singing are dark, sexy, and mysterious. There is this great visceral energy about the album, sweat and spit drip off of every song. Every time I listen to this I like it more.

When I rate albums on here, I try to do it at a gut level. Did I like it, really like it, love it? And even though rating music is subjective, I think I usually have persuasive reasons for my 1 or 2 star albums. This one not so much. I wasn't into it but not for any major reason. The guitars are hard and grungy, and PJ Harvey's vocals are raw. She has a punk attitude that I respect. But I don't know, the songs didn't move me. Maybe some of the music felt a little flat? I don't know if that's the right word. The riffs didn't jump out and grab me.

I love this intro to the album. Sleazy guitar riff and evocative vocals. I really like how raw this record is. I kind of wish there was another guitar or something though- for some reason it sounds like it has a pretty weak low-end. Like the bass guitar has no bass in it or is way too low in the mix. This was a fun listen. Overall I dig the sound and the mood but it didn't blow me away or anything.

Not really my thing but not bad

I enjoyed this album from PJ Harvey more than I enjoyed “Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea”. What’s important to note however is that this is the “band” PJ Harvey and not “Solo” PJ Harvey so that may be a contributing factor.

This is not my favorite PJ Harvey, but it's still very much PJ Harvey.

There is an appealing strangeness and quirkiness to Harvey's lyrics and vocal delivery that would've kept me hooked; were it not for the alt rock backing, which seemed to become less daring the deeper I got into the album. Not bad, all told.

Enjoyed. I've never quite done a deep dive into all things PJ, but I don't ever dislike listening to her. "Happy and Bleeding" was fun. "Plants and rags." I like the slower, quirkier stuff more than the grunge-laced riot grrrl tracks. But hey, 1992. I get it.

I don't know if I like this PJ Harvey more than To Bring You My Love, but it's ridiculous that she wasn't on the wave of success and stardom that other rock acts with much less talent got to ride in the 90s'.

I absolutely love PJ Harvey, but I also hold her later albums in MUCH more regard. Like good wine, her music improved with age. I'll put it this way, of all her albums, I wouldn't have picked this one for this list.

Even though nothing REALLY peaked my interest. I still was very willing to come back to it. I'm not really sure why. I just enjoyed it a good bit. I also wonder if PJ Harvey was influenced by some Kate Bush? Her vocals reminds me of Bush.

Interesting

I was familiar with PJ Harvey due to "Down by the Water" (which I enjoy), but this was my first time listening to an entire album of hers. This is much rawer and more guitar-heavy than "Down by the Water." It legit rocks, and I dig it. I'm impressed. 4.5 stars.

I should like this more than I do, but I don't. I'm strangely picky with female led rock/alt bands. 3.5

PJ Harvey is one of my favourite artists, this isn’t my favourite album of hers but it’s still pretty much flawless. Fav tracks: Sheela-na-gig, Plants and Rags, Water, O Stella, Dress Least fav tracks: None, they’re all good.

I've never heard of this artist before but I liked this album a lot! I don't know what about it appealed to me but there was just something that made me wanna keep listening instead of just kinda getting through it because I had to like the previous record. Honestly this is probably the closest I've been to buying a physical copy of a band I've recently heard of from this list.

3rd time listening. This was already my 2nd favorite album, but I don’t have a lot to say about it. Almost every song works for me. The only songs I don’t care for are “Hair” and “Joe”. This is my favorite PJ Harvey album, and she’s my favorite musical artist. Favorite song: “Plants and Rags”.

Pure raw grunge

I wouldn't turn it off if it was on the radio, but I wouldn't necessarily seek it out either.

De hoes is opvallender dan de muziek. Het stoute zusje van Sheryl Crow ragt wat op de gitaar, blèrt een beetje, vals viooltje erbij, dat laatste deed het in de jaren negentig altijd goed bij dit soort dames. Maar de andere rockbitches van de jaren 90 maakten toch wel interessanter spul dan dit.

Je ziet de straatmuzikante al op afstand zitten. Eén persoon met een hele stellage, om alle instrumenten tegelijk te kunnen bespelen. Knap is het zeker. Dus je loopt er wat dichter naar toe. Zij begint te spelen en blijkt de inspiratie voor de composities bij Wende Snijders vandaan gehaald te hebben. Het is een kunst dat zeker. Dus je blijft toch maar even staan. Ze heeft nog best een goede stem. Alleen, dat interesseert haarzelf niet zo. Het draait niet om haar, het gaat om de kunst. Dus af en toe schreeuwt ze gewoon wat tussendoor, het liefst off-beat. Wie dat niets niets vindt, is een 13-in een dozijn-muziek liefhebber. Zij staat hier voor de kunst. Ok. Duidelijk. Dus jij loopt maar snel door.

Festivalmuziek voor getormenteerde alto-meisjes uit de 90s, met hun Dr Martens. De grunge versie van Bjork. Voor mij iets te wazig allemaal, het rockt wel lekker af en toe, maar dan moet ze er toch weer een afwijkend moeilijk ritme in gooien zodat het niet lekker loopt, maar stotterend en haperend. Uiteindelijk zit het toch best aardig in elkaar, ik heb niet de neiging gehad het uit te zetten, maar zou best nog een plaatje van haar op kunnen zetten. Dus 3 sterretjes toch wel weer waard.

Alright! This was good! Only heard “Let England Shake” prior to this and I wasn’t a massive fan, I’m still not but this was good! How often would I reach for it? Not often enough to end up in my collection, but it’s certainly something I wouldn’t switch off if it popped on the stereo.

It’s good. It paved the war for so much but that road is so well traveled the uniqueness is lost.

I listened to this twice in a row, because I felt that there was something more there that first time I listened to it. I'm glad I did, because I liked it even more the second time. Not sure why I liked this album more than the other PJH album we listened to so far, but this seemed to be a bit more cohesive. PJ Harvey said she put everything into this first album because she didn't know if there would be a second. Man, you can tell. There was a lot going on there. "Dress" was probably my favorite, the lurching of the 3/4 time signature did it for me. I did not like the abrupt stops of the first few songs, that did feel a little like there was a missing track somewhere. Definitely an album I will come back to.

Dark, gloomy, and grungy. Just the way I like PJ Harvey's music (and a lot of other music too). It's got that same raw guitar and bass that early Nirvana was going for, as they chased after a Pixies kind of thing. I liked her two singles Dress and Sheela-Na-Gig when I first discovered this album a couple years ago. Re-listening (a few times over) I also found I really dug Oh My Lover, O Stella, Victory, Hair, Joe - again, loving the raw guitar and bass. Big fan of Harvey's first three albums. Solid debut here.

Wow, very cool album. Heard of her, but never heard her music before. I see there are three more albums here, so looking forward to those. I'll call it a 4 because I don't know if it's an essential album, but I definitely want to listen more. Great voice, cool music. Favorite Tracks - O Stella (awesome bass line), Victory, Happy and Bleeding, Sheela-Na-Gig, Plants and Rags (like the unusual stylings - great use of violin).

My initial reaction in seeing this was WTF?! THREE albums by PJ Harvey?! Is she married to the editor? Then I listened to it and realized this is the good one.

Raw and maybe angry. May have worked with less brash instrumentation letting the words work. The tolerable parts are fleeting.

She's so much better since she split from Duncan.

British Alanis Morrissette? I feel like I've already heard this album just by watching Peaky Blinders. Tbh it was much more compelling as a soundtrack.

For all the talk and undoubted success, for me this was disappointingly limited musically and lyrically.

Not a big fan of Harvey, but I liked this album more than her other work. Did seem to be just a little noisy at parts, but it was cool. Not for me though. 3/5

Raw and powerful. Initially I was going to ask if this album was necessary for this list - how many slots can one artist take? - but this is as essential a debut and mission statement for Harvey as an artist that it warrants inclusion.

Still my favourite Peej album even after all these years (must be a teenage galvanising thing). So much more accessible and fun than Rid Of Me. Muddle of album is particularly impressive (Victory, Hair, Sheela, Dress, etc).

Much like every time I've encountered PJ Harvey, I was neither impressed nor put off. It's just barely alright enough to be frustrating. There's an edge here that I like but they just... don't quite take it far enough. You're left feeling like every song stops just shy of completion.

PJ Harvey is awesome. Poetry with attitude, this album in a case in point for how music can be heavy and nuanced, moody and intelligent. Rock music with a truly delicate soul

I really like this album. I like how it's more vocals focused, and the darker instrumentals help set the tone. The lyrics hit hard, and it's angry but catchy and really well made. It's not something I would've tried to seek out on my own, but I feel like that is a mistake on my part. Favorite Tracks: Dress, Sheela-Na-Gig, Plants and Rags, Water

Good grungy nineties lady I enjoyed

Check out the olds here: I first heard Sheela-Na-Gig on the local college radio station KGRG 89.9 FM broadcast from Green River Community College in Auburn, WA before I graduated high school. The DJ introduced PJ Harvey as something like a "female fronted Fugazi" which after hearing the song felt both accurate and totally off. That aside, I was completely floored by the song and picked up DRY as soon as possible. And now I'm just another long-time fan of PJ Harvey whose amazing voice, artful song craft, and impassioned bravado has never fell out of fashion with me.

Well my heart sunk at yet another PJ, the artist I have most tried to like but failed too. She was the chosen autoplay artist after Throbbing Gristle, afterall. And yet - for whatever reason - I'm OK with this one. Did some lyric reading, that didn't shed any further light though. Maybe I should revisit the other ones...

Third album I’ve listen to from this artist. The first I really liked. The second I kind of hated. And this being her debut, I was unsure how I’d feel before listening. Glad to say I enjoyed it. A strong debut album. Great blues, indie rock sound.

Saw another review mention the mixing, but it really knocked my enjoyment not being able to fucking HEAR HER for half a song. Whether it's Apple Music or just the album, I don't know. There's a lot really good here, and as a debut too.

She does have a nice voice but naturally sounds a little inexperienced. You don't really like the genre, some songs are just really weird but you have to acknowledge that they seem to be enjoying themselves. You certainly are jealous of that guy on the guitar because he knows how to play the cool instrument and he is vibing a little too much with your crush. It is only at your third concert of them that you notice they have a bass guy and that his lines are actually somewhat catchy. After someone tells you that your crush has been dating guitar guy for at least one year by now, your interest in that kind of Alternative Rock nose-dives - and never recovers.

reminded me a bit of fiona apple and I know we got another of her albums this year at some point but I did like this one better. Still isn't something I'd keep listening too but I enjoyed some of the tracks and I like her voice.

Bracing myself for a swath of PJ Harvey albums since I found out she's British. That's how it goes, artist you've never heard of has their entire catalog on this list because they're from the UK. Anyway, this one's pretty solid, I think I liked it more than the last. It's got a cool grunge edge to it that made it memorable, but not too many tracks will be staying in my playlist. Favorite tracks: Dress, Fountain. Album art: Yuck. Dry lips? Is that what we're going for? Someone's face smushed against the glass, I don't think it's PJ herself though. It's a memorable cover though, I'll give her that. 3/5

i liked it!

after the first 15 seconds i just gave up. i don’t really know how to even describe this, just that it is not something i will ever be listening to again. it sounded as dry as the album covers lips were.

Listening to this makes me feel like I'm looking for bugs in a dirty apartment complex; I suddenly open a dark and dingy closet and this is the soundtrack of what would blast at me with 200 silverfish scurrying out. Appropriately titled album. Low effort music, repetitive nonsense, lo-fi. No appeal whatsoever. 2/10 1 star.

My first ever generated album was a PJ Harvey alvum that I did not like one bit, but I was open to trying again. I also don't really enjoy this one even though I do prefer it out of the two. It's just not for me. I like the emotion behind the voice but not the voice itself. I did like the grunge elements.

I like PJ's powerful sound but I'm a bit surprised she has two (at least two, I haven't listened to all 1001 albums yet) in the top 1001 albums of all time.

Love PJ Harvey. Solid album.

Really liked this. Raw and full of emotion while being amazingly catchy. An interesting thing I read on PJ Harvey's Wikipedia page was about how Dry was Kurt Cobain's 16th favourite album of all time, I can totally hear some parallels between this and Nirvana. Definitely will revisit this album.

The album was meh. There were some songs that were alright. Then there were songs that were not great and went on for way too long.

Dark and gritty post-punk that serves as a perfect companion to the grunge era. Instruments have a lively and atmospheric feel to them, incredibly spacious and synergetic, giving an abrasive undertone to the underlying melody. This is supported by Harvey's eery vocals buried beneath the distortion, as well as the dirty and screechy sound of many of the instruments (e.g. the cymbals and classical strings). Second half is weaker but still full of great ideas. Favorites: Oh My Lover, Dress, Victory, Sheela-Na-Gig, Joe, Plants & Rags

App deleted my review. Here's what I remember writing. Any excuse to stick a bit of Peej on. Really solid debut with some proper bangers on it. She goes from strength to strength and she's one of those artists who whatever she does you know it will be interesting. You exhibitionist!

Never heard of PJ Harvey. Has some early grunge vibes which I like. Nothing seems to grab or offend. I would call it a good album, but forgettable.

My favorite part about this project is discovering artists and records like this. PJ Harvey has been a familiar name for a long time now, but I had no idea she sounded LIKE THIS? It's raw and gritty yet still polished, it's quintessentially angsty, and it's all around awesome. It reminded me that no matter how old I get or what I go through in life, I will always be that angsty, emo teenager who loves listening to angry music. It really never just was a phase mom, this is who I really am!!!!

Not your typical “rock” and I’m here for it. PJ put you on a roller coaster and you didn’t know what the next turn was. I’m actually obsessed with her voice, it’s so raspy and lays extremely well with the power chords that hit like boulders. The way she takes a strike at gender politics in 1992 is beautiful. There is so much I wanna say about this album but idrk how to put it into words and that’s almost how the entire album is. It makes you feel something but you don’t know what or why you’re feeling this. At the end of the day, it’s PJ Harvey, a legend. 9.2/10, I loved this!

Might give it a 4 if I kept listening. Really hit a cord. Reminds me of a more simplistic TOOL with the lack of instrumental depth but what it’s got is less for each instrument than tool has. Less complex too but had the bass forward rifts

I really enjoyed that I don’t know if it was just me tho but that mixing sucked I listened to it on Apple Music and I could barely hear the songs, so weird but yeah, the songs themselves were pretty cool, and I LOVED the weird time signatures they used I couldn’t pick up all of them, but I’m pretty sure I Hair is 6/4? and Water is a 10/8? I probably got those wrong but I still appreciate the songs nonetheless favorite track was probably Plants and Rags, that whole Velvet-Underground-if-they-were-90’s type shit was just 🤌 yeah, definitely a 10/10, I just wished they made like a 2022 Remaster or something to fix how it sounds still, I enjoyed the hell out of that

I want to like it, but it's just too abrasive for me. Which is weird because I love Hole, Bikini Kill, L7, The Breeders, etc., lots of other amazing women led acts from the 90s that strove to share a unique point of view with the world through their music. Maybe I need to listen a few more times to acquire the taste, but I just don't have the energy for that today. It's like the music, the vocals, the melodies, and the lyrics are all fighting for my attention and I can't hear it properly. It's not creating a cohesive whole, it's creating a jarring racket that doesn't give my ears something solid to latch onto and enjoy. Sorry, PJ. I appreciate you, but I'm not into this.

09/19/2022 Retrospective listen. Tried for several days to get to this one. I would’ve loved the shit out of this if I was alive when it came out. This album rocks hard

Are there any award ceremonies that aren't an unloved farce? Will Smith slapping Chris Rock has been the only occasion when anyone has cared about the Oscars in at least 20 years. The most famous Nobel laureate for literature in recent times is Bob Dylan, and he couldn't be bothered to show up to collect it. And music awards are perhaps the most risible. Yes, we all cheered when Jarvis Cocker waved his arse in protest at Michael Jackson impersonating Christ at the Brits, but remember that the organisers thought Michael Jackson impersonating Christ was a good idea. The group that has won the most Grammies? U2, the most milquetoast, most conservative, least interesting, least deserving choice possible. And don't we all know these payola-provided ceremonies are solely to buttress the already eclipse-inducing egos of the tapeworms of the music industry, those who spend their working lives drafting contracts designed to leave the artists owing them money after they made the corporation enough dosh to buy Lithuania? I mention this because PJ Harvey has the apparent honour of being the only act to win the Mercury Prize twice. For those who don't know (nobody cares, as everyone knows), the Mercury Prize is an annual award to choose the best album from Britain and Ireland. In fairness, the Mercury Prize has managed some hits along with the misses: Screamadelica, Dummy, Different Class and the debuts of Suede, Franz Ferdinand and the Arctic Monkeys all seem solid in retrospect, but without looking up, can you name who won with the albums Elegant Slumming, A Little Deeper, Speech Therapy or An Awesome Wave? Indeed, the Mercury curse is the name given to the observed phenomenon that a Mercury Prize has sounded the death knell for plenty an act. Anyone remember the Klaxons? Anyone care? So we can't really infer the quality of PJ Harvey's work by way of her industry accolades. Mind, we can infer the quality of PJ Harvey's work by way of the exceptionally consistent quality of her albums. Yes, I have dithered for a bit, but just saying she's excellent doesn't really boost the word count, does it? Expanding the praise, PJ Harvey has real claim to be the best female singer-songwriter of the 90s. Dry, her debut album, has her kicking down the door, demanding with sheer talent that the world take notice. One can discern influences from blues, folk, punk and post-punk, but PJ Harvey clearly operates in her own genre, follows her own muse. This glorious independence rattles throughout the album, and it's an independence that she has never sacrificed. Anyway, note the year 1992. 1992 was also the year that grunge exploded. Sorry America, it was this album that properly sounded electrifying, punky, uncompromising, honest and raw. Bit more than Ugly Kid Joe, know what I mean?

PJ Harvey, rock trio and PJ Harvey, rock goddess, barreled through the senses with reckless abandon on this epochal debut. Thirty years on and this is still a searing, full on showcase for who would become one of the more chameleonic and captivating musicians of her era. No wonder why she thought this would be her only album and dared to go all out. May I say that the gambit worked pretty damn well.

The first PJ Harvey album I’ve ever listened to and it was okay. Gets a bit monotonous by the end but a pretty solid album. Would listen to it again and looking forward to checking out some of her other albums. This one was fine.

With many singer-songwriter-type albums, they tend to not click with me on first listen but then either grow on me or just stay uninteresting to me. Same here, I appreciate the lyrics and some of the songwriting but it just does not fully click yet.

I love PJ's middle period but her early period is a bit too scratchy for me to really get into it. It's ok, but nothing compared to what would come five or so years later.

There's Bono in her voice. But where his mannerisms are pointed inwards, as an ingestion his own significance, Polly Jean's head in the other direction, projecting rounded vowels and hard consonants from deep in her diaphragm. For want of a better word, we'll call it expression. In addition, she's got the earnest lyrics to match, a drummer with a vengeance, a bassist with a connection to his ass, and guitar hero aspirations of her own to rival Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker.

PJ Harvey is a treasure.

A compelling collection of grooves, driving distorted rhythm, and poetry given passionate life. Awesome album!

Tres cool

Pour un début album, c’est pas mal. Du rock de prime abord plutôt classique qui se transforme assez vite en de la musique plus expérimentale. Je trouve l’ensemble de l’album tres bizarre avec aucune chanson qui m’a vraiment marqué et plu. Niveau instruments et production, content d’entendre un peu de violon Mais c’est bien tout. La chanteuse elle a une jolie voix et j’aimerai l’entendre sur de meilleurs titres Conclusion: pas top mais je pense que la chanteuse a une discographie à explorer.

Gives quite a raw feeling but even with that the instrumentals don't really take me anywhere (some exception like Joe, water or other... ) Without knowing it is a debut album it doesn't give a good album vibe, but a great artist vibe for sure. I should love pj Harvey. She is universally revered in the rock indie world. Yet I didn’t enjoy any but of this album.

She gets much better later, but this is a strong debut.

A lot of overlapping qualities shared with the Riot Grrrl movement and big of the time bands like Nirvana. This album rips, killer debut effort.

Aggressive, Fuzzed out alt-rock of the highest order. Dry could be released today and still sound fresh. Great record.

Ehh. This wasn’t for me. I’m guessing she was a trendsetter being a woman playing this type of music and recording all the instruments, but the songs seemed very mid to me.

I'm a PJ Harvey fan, but I had never listened to this album from front to back until now. Love the raw emotional sound of this album. Her voice brings me back to my teen years, when MTV still played music, and hearing Björk, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos - groundbreaking female alt artists. Enjoyed this, and when taking into account her other work, she's a legend. Fav track: Sheela-Na-Gig

I am completely unfamiliar with this album. Alt-Rock? Grunge? Punk? Is that a cello?? Nice. Actually... multiple strings? cool. She is emotional and raw. This is growing on me a bit. I turned up the volume and it is more enjoyable. Overall I am surprised that this album would make the list of greatest all time albums. Stand out songs IMO: Dress, Happy And Bleeding, & Fountain

I was clearly not listening to the right radio stations in '92. I didn't hear about PJ Harvey until down by the water came out. These song were good, a mix between pop and punk, she is finding her place. Rid of Me is the first full album I listened to and loved from her, followed by To Bring you my Love.

Right before the swell of bright britpop that would be the UK's conscious reaction to America's dingy grunge, England's PJ Harvey had accepted the raw and noisy textures associated with grunge for her debut album. This style of alternative rock would be a hit for Harvey, working well with her prose that invites listeners into scenes from tired relationships. Truth be told, I have a soft spot for cool 90's alt rock like this. Sonic Youth, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. All of it cool. Even if I don't love it, I still hold it in high regard for some reason.
