Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Much better than the last one! I enjoyed the punky rock upbeat, and not to weird
Decent album. I enjoy PJ Harvey style as it kind of reminds me of a mix between Radiohead and Nirvana
Some solid tracks on this one. Pleasantly surprised.
Found it a bit raw and dark for my taste
It's like female-led Nirvana. Cool. Ish.
Interesting album. I dig it. Never heard of this artist before, went in completely blind, ended up pleasantly surprised. I like the alternative rock feel with a female frontwoman.
3.5 very good, some absolute belter but knocked off .5 for some songs that were just her whining
certainly a lot of talent here and strong first album... just not really my vibe and struggled to get into it.
I quite liked this. It had some really good sounding guitar and was more melodic than the previous one.
meh
Probably revolutionary in 1992
Not a huge fan. Little bit too alt/punky for my taste.
Muito bom
supposedly the lyrics are really good but the music is so intense it hard to actually listen to them
Definitely more straightforward rock and roll compared to their later releases. I like their experimentation later on a bit more but this album isn’t bad either
I kind of liked it, but overall I'd have to give it another listen 3.5
2/15 3.5/5. Some good punk. Standout Tracks: Sheela-Na-Gig, Hair, Joe
Variable, there were things i liked and things that grated.
This didn’t do much for me. The songs were typical 90’s angst and all sounded the same.
Strong Rock & Roll with a whole lot of whining happening behind it. The lyrics are gimmicky and superficial with no real depth to anything PJ is saying. The best part of the album is the instrumentals.
Grungy little 90s alt-rock record. Nothing that really grabs me from this record and it all kind of bleeds together. It's not scathing to listen to, but just kind of bland and routine. Maybe I could get into it more after another listen or two.
It's good. But I'm absolutely not the target for this album.
The fourth PJ Harvey album I have had on this list. Something about her clear voice and vocals sounds super-90s to me, but beyond that I can't really form an opinion. This is fine, but I think I can definitively say that I don't like PJ Harvey. I don't dislike her, but I don't like her. I liked the noisier, folk-rocky Dress. Plants and Rags had its moments of interest also, but overall I found the strings too discordant to enjoy, even if these are deliberate.
Don’t enjoy her voice
Reminds me of the bangles.
I’m tempted to dismiss this album as a bunch of angry women, but I assume that plays right into the reason this band played the music that they played. Hard to tell. But by and large, not for me…
I think this was a female view of 90s angst. It doesn't feel like it speaks to me but it definitely had an audience
no estaba, escuche una rola nomas
Meh. I tried but was pretty bored.
This started out with a chance that this could be the best PJ Harvey album we had listened to yet and just descended into disinterest. This is fine, I don't get it and there is too much PJ Harvey on this list.
interesting album but prefer her later stuff. Not sure why it had to be on the list
Ei iskenyt. 2/5
Just does nothing for me.
Why there are so many PJ Harvey albums?
Starting positively, I did prefer this to Rid Of Me which I gave one star to. It’s not a bad album or anything, it just didn’t interest me in the slightest. I’m three hours removed from finishing it and I remember absolutely nothing about it.
i did not enjoy it, but im not the target audience
PJ Harvey was one of those artists that I always knew the name but never sat down and listened. I understand the hype, the songs are raw and could totally see this crushing for a live show.
There’s a pretty common line floating around at the moment on the web that something is “an X of all time”, something that’s just there, completely unremarkable. On a list of albums meant to be the greatest or most influential of all time, this was certainly an album of all time. Dry was just that, very dry, very bland, and very forgettable. I can’t say I was enamoured with the vocalist’s performances or any of the musicians, they were perfectly fine, as was the riffs, Melodies, and lyrics. Everything here was just meh. Perhaps I’m missing something but in such a closed list I felt like this didn’t really deserve its place. Your mileage may vary but for me the mileage was low. Just ultimately okayish in the moment and forgettable as soon as it’s done.
Not for me.
Totally MEH. Don't like grunge.
2nd album I've had by Harvey and she just doesn't do much for me. It's ok alternative rock but the music lacks depth, it's repetitive and the guitars plod.
Dismal, as was her previous one. I see there are four PJ Harvey albums on this list. Curious and unjustifiable.
Yep, that was something. A couple of good riffs, but boring as hell otherwise. If waking up hungover with the shakes was a record.
yaaaaaaaawn
Not really great, bored me
Apt title.
This was pretty cool. I like this kind of alternative rock sound in 92. I don’t think she is that interesting of a singer though or maybe something about the mix feels to fall a little flat. Is this the 4th PJ Harvey album we’ve had- I feel like she might be over represented in this list? 2.5
Very forgettable but weve heard far worse
Gnarly and reminds me of Patti Smith, but nothing I'd need to hear again
(3/7) unremarkable
6/10 Highlights: Plants and Rags
Forgettable
mid
Left me cold
Not my thing, the more I look into the album the more it became interesting, still don't understand the influence it has to be included in this list
I wanted to like it, I really did. It was grating to sit through, which I'm sad about because I usually ADORE grunge. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood right now as I sat to listen, but I found myself looking forward to it being over. +1 star for feminist lyrics, fight the power or something.
Estuvo meh
Not bad but left no impact on me. Woke up this morning and didn’t have a single memory of listening to this one
Why is there so much PJ Harvey on here?
coo
I’ve never loved PJ Harvey’s music, and this album did nothing to change that. Definitely understand her having an album on the list (I know she has at least 2), but this didn’t do anything more me. Not unlistenable, but just okay. This is a 2.5 but I’m rounding down because nothing really caught my attention or stuck with me.
Not my kind of music
Angry white girl music not as good as alanis.
Felt a little difficult to listen to
I'd like this if I had a girlfriend. Possibly.
Boring to me
First PJ Harv. She's surprisingly well-represented on this list, though I suppose she has always been a critic darling. I've seen this album while flicking through the book, though I never stopped to notice that it was from the woman of the hour. Doesn't seem like an album cover she'd put out. Anyhoo, I'm familiar with PJ Harvey because I listened to "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea" a few years back. My Dad recommended it to me because Thimmy Bjorke featured on one of the tracks, though I don't remember even noticing the track he appeared on because I was so bored by the whole affair. I have more discerning, music-hardened ears now, so I'm confident I had no idea what I was talking about back then. Hopefully this album is the one to make me a convert. I haven't seen a track rating this consistent in a good while. Every song (with the exception of tracks two and three) were rated a 3/10, which is my go-to score for songs which don't hold my attention, but also don't offend my sensibilities. My favourite word to use in the place of boring is dull, and by all measures of non-sharpness this album is a right piece of shit. It can't even cut through a wet paper bag. I'm not sure what I'm holding in my hand, really. It's one of plastic retractable knives, but it's made of Styrofoam. Does anyone actually sell these? As I have belaboured to this point, this album is incredibly boring and most of it didn't work for me. The instrumentals have this muddy sound which is generally unappealing and undermines whatever the rest of this album could have going for it. The growling guitars sound slightly off-key in a way which bugs me, and the remaining instruments are sparse to point of making these songs sound barren and unfinished. The non-descript instrumentals result in similarly uninteresting vocals. Harvey sounds like she's a wink away from snoozing on the mic for most of this album. The version I listened to was also strangely quiet. I was afraid I was gonna have my eardrums ruptured at any moment for cranking up the volume. While this was a lethargic listen, it didn't go on for longer than it needed to and it didn't frustrate me, which is why I'm saving it from the one-star category. Book time. Has feminist themes. Powerful vocals. Complex lyrics. Named Best Songwriter and Best New Female Singer by Rolling Stone. The Wikipedia page is surprisingly sparse, but it backs up that this album was, in fact, well-received by critics. It also says the album didn't chart anywhere outside of the UK at the time. I'm beginning to question whether PJ Harvey does deserve four list albums. The question is whether this album or her final inclusion is the one worth scrubbing - I'm pretty sure the middle two are worth keeping. I'll take a shot in the dark and guess that PJ had more of her act together later in her career than she did on this debut album. Snubbed. In place of this album, I humbly submit Animals by Pink Floyd for inclusion on the list.
This was fine. I can tell this artist is talented but I found it all a bit forgettable. It sounded a bit like the Blur album I just listened to...
I just really hate the vocals here, it’s the same issue I have with a lot of 90s vocals they just sound flat
Very edgy and gnarly....brave for debut album
I'm not so big on the grungier style here, disappointed as I love Let England Shake and was excited to hear a raw indie style. Can hear a lot of stuff here which I love in 2000s and 2010s slacker rock stuff but it just didn't click with me
It was okay. The sound quality was all over the place though. I liked this album more than the other PJ Harvey album on this list. Still, I wouldn’t listen to it again.
PJ Harvey is a great artist, but unfortunately, some of her albums fall flat to me. I still haven't found an album of hers that I can relate to. But don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it's just not relatable.
I might give another shot
i thought i liked this and then i realized i don't lmfao
Not my jam. 2.5
Alt rokkia, vähän ehkä liian taiteellista sellaista. Kappaleet oli aika räväköitä ja "meluisia". Parhaat: Fountain, Victory
There is a character named Corey in the classic 1989 movie “Say Anything” who rights an unhealthy amount of songs about her ex named Joe. That what PJ Harvey sounds like to me.
2:5
I was let down by this album. I was excited because I really like one song by her, but this was not it.
I think I have listened to a few PJ Harvey albums over the years but they have never done much for me. I think this is her first album. Has some ok moments musically but I don’t love her singing. I suspect I may like her later records better
2,5 stars
not my bag
I listened to this yesterday, and I can't remember it.
I didn't feel strongly about this album in either direction.
Just couldn't get into it.
90s critic darling PJ Harvey! For the 4th(?) time on this list. Ugh. I dont get the media obsession with this. Its on the lower end of mid tier as can be. To be fair this may be the best of her albums.
Not for me. Never liked PJ Harvey’s vocal stylings.
This really isn’t that bad, but I’m docking an extra point because this woman is on this list too many times.
This alternative rock album burns like a bare lightbulb—its jagged guitars, sparse drums, and searing vocals exposing every raw nerve with a stark intensity that’s both captivating and uncomfortable.
PJ Harvey has never been my thing. After listening to this album I can confirm she is still not my thing. Her songs and voice sound a bit too much like noise to me.
I did not like PJ Harvey before this album, I still do not like PJ Harvey after this album. But I will say this is better than some of her other showings.
Was never a fan of PJ Harvey - Gave some of it a listen, ok - but still too chaotic for me, dare I say pretentious?!
Eh
Meh
Pitchfork: 9.2 Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs
Solid PJ album, rawer than her later work. High 2s.
Just didn’t really care for it. I feel like the vocals didn’t match the music.
Hmm, Chrissie Amphlett did it better.
Awful album cover - boring album.
Great, another PJ Harvey record.
Competent but very boring
Meh?! What's significant about this, it sounds kinda like the same song over and over? It's not bad, but nothing about it is good.
This was not good. Not specifically bad enough to warrant a 1- just generally unenjoyable.
I can sense the authenticity and I appreciate trying different things, it just wasn't that well executed
Not a fan.
Bit samey
Yeah its no interessant
Oof. I thought I was going to like this because I've listened to later PJ Harvey albums and dug them. But this really was just a bunch of wailing. I'm sure there's some deeper meaning buried within the lyrics, but it's pretty hard stuff to listen to.
Not exactly my kind if music
Remarkably boring.
The album cover mattress me feel really uncomfortable for some reason. It was alright.
Don't know if I needed 2 PJ Harvey albums in 5 days. This one was the ultimate sad girl album it was just so dang depressing. Definitely the worst of her 3 on here and hopefully the last
More dull slow British rock. Eh. You Said Something was nice, and a few of the songs have nice music. But most of the album is just meh. A few of the songs are way too repetitive as well. Best song: Sheela-na-gig
I appreciate what she’s doing here but I don’t enjoy it
Didn’t really like this at all. Would probably sound much better live
Rock, Punk, 1992 -> 2
It’s aight. Nothing I can’t live without or to write home about. 1001 album worthy: nah - 101/187
So much PJ Harvey in my life the last year. Too much. I feel like this one best explains her significance but it’s still not for me. I appreciate she’s a woman rocker, but I don’t think it’s particularly interesting and I don’t like listening to it.
Get the fuck out of my face PJ Harvey
This album was meh. PJ Harvey gives female Kurt Cobain a bit.
Repetitive raw first album
2,5
Only one song I liked, a little sloppy and the volume is all over the place.
Regular
Not much substance and not for me. Some songs were load and some were barely audible, I didn't like any of them
Lite skränigt, nosar på oljud ibland.
Had some interesting moments, but ultimately not for me
They really had the mouth of sauron pose for the album cover
ehh not my fave
Great grunge sound, even dig her voice but.... These songs are horrible, geez how to kill great music with awful lyrics.
Not much into it.
I must say listening to this album kind of disappointed me. I found it boring.
OK but unfortunately not my cup of tea. 2/5
Favorite track: O stella. Overall score: 3.4/10
I like how guitar is a bit more at the front. Grunge-y Edit Apr 15 2026: 3 --> 2
Some ok rockin moments but nothing Id recommend
I’m just not a fan.
Not ripe yet
Glad to hear a woman but didn't need a 90s edgelord
I enjoyed the grungy vibes, but Harvey’s voice just doesn’t do it for me.
2.5
I liked the tracks but can't do her voice
Not keen on her voice. Never have been.
Found this pretty uninspiring. Its raw and punky and doesn't really do anything for me. 2.4/5
First song was good, but then it went downhill. Seemed like a WalMart version of Garbage.
Better than the other PJ album them on here
Convinced that PJ takes her songs to her producer and is like “make these sound as dull as possible”
ok. kinda a lot.
I have never really gotten into PJ Harvey; it’s yet again a voice thing, I think. I get why people like this, but it was not all that enjoyable for me to listen to, although I did like certain elements.
Sorry PJ I really didn’t like this it was indeed DRY
That's not my taste in music
First track was unlistenable. O Stella is certainly an improvement reminding me of 80's fare like Siouxie, et al. The guitar work is very basic, but gets the job done.
Ok 2/5
It was okay I guess. Seems pretty heavily influenced by Patti Smith, who I don't really care for.
2/5
Damn that's way too depressive
Grungy
Tilfinningarokk er ekki alveg í uppáhaldi hjá mér og ég fílaði þessa plötu ekki neitt sérstaklega. Mér finnst lögin keimlík og mér finnst næstum því eins og ég þurfi að vera í andlegu ójafnvægi til að geta notið tónlistarinnar. Ég get samt alveg hlustað á þetta en kýs að gera það ekki.
not really my thing.. love her voice tho!!
dull
Super boring
Another one I'll never understand. Once, maybe two songs of interest in their entire catalog, 2 albums on this list.
And easy copy & paste of the last review I wrote for a PJ Harvey record: “Meh. Angsty, harsh, too distorted for my liking. Not for me.”
Sounds like "annoyed-woman-screaming-in-microphone-with-guitars-having-too-much-distortion-music"
I was only okay with PJ Harvey and this album…it doesn’t make me want to go in search of more music from her.
I just felt disappointed listening to this one. I thought the mixing was especially awful for the musical style of the album. The instruments were all much louder than the singer, but they weren't doing anything interesting to make it seem intentional.
Forgettable album
nothing memorable. not bad either. 5/10
Ich begreife nicht, was daran hörenswert ist.
Vocals can quiet at stages and overall mixing all of the place but otherwise too terrible
punk rocky
Victory // Sheela-na-gig // Water 2-2.5/5
There were two tracks I really liked, probably because they strayed away from the 3 chord punk rock, Nirvana-esque sounds of the rest of the album: "Happy and Bleeding" and "Plants and Rags". I love the dissonance, whining strings and big bellowing drums behind it all. There's some really cool cascades with the guitars, too. Outside of those two, the rest of the album was listenable, but its sound had a low ceiling for me. IT was 1992, I think her debut album? If so, you can hear it bursting with energy and cynicism. So much less mature than her later city/sea stories album, but definitely raucous fun. A shiny two stars. Fav track: Plants and Rags
it seems like the type of album that would get carried by great vocals. unfortunately the vocals were okay at best and it didn’t work
As with the other album, PJ Harvey is not my style. Rating: 2
Eh not for me I guess 2/5
This album was pretty much the same thing the whole time. I’m sure at the time it was different and innovative, but I felt sounded like average garage band. That’s a special with the guitars or hooks and the lyrics. This one was only OK. 2.5/5.
I’ve never loved PJ Harvey, I’ve never hated PJ Harvey. I didn’t love this album, but I didn’t hate it. It was sufficiently heavy, and she does tear it up. I’m sure she puts on a good show. At the same time, maybe because of how she tends to sing/speak, all of these songs kind of sound the same. This was her debut, and better albums do come along. I probably won’t put this on again, but I wouldn’t be upset if someone else did. 8th review.
Prefer Steve Harvey
This album is just okay but doesn't make me interested in a second runthrough so 2 stars or D+.
Ikke så spændende
Not the best. It seems lacking in the hook department. Nothing here really to get into.
I can’t put my finger on it, but I did not enjoy this.
Same dreary whaling and gloomy riffs over and over. This isn’t edgy, it’s just boring.
Dry is a very apt name for this album as it was dry of any decent music.
07/09/24 S Tier————————— A Tier—————————4 Dress B Tier—————————3 Joe Sheela Na-Gig C Tier—————————2 Plants and Rags Fountain Water O Stella Hair D Tier—————————1 Happy And Bleeding Oh My Lover
I like some PJ but this one is not some.
I don't think this is for me.
- aggressive but enjoyable - love some of the bass lines
"Dry" is an appropriate name
Truly never heard of her music. I just know her of her collabs with other artists. Not really my style of music.
Grunge rock
Terrible - I don't enjoy her music at all. Sort of avant garde/punk/poetry a la Patty Smith (don't like her music either). Virtually unlistenable to me.
I don't believe I've ever listened to PJ Harvey. This album is firmly in the 'meh' camp for me. There's tons of 5 star reviews for it, so I'm obviously not getting something. I just don't hear any earworms.
Not really for me. Kind of a whiney grunge feel.
2 Instruments overwhelm voices! Is it a bad mix?
Gäsp!
Bruh moment, not feeling it rn
Florence and the Machine in a different font. I don’t think I’d listen again though, a little breathy and whiny. I liked the mix overall but it just wasn’t my taste.
Meh
This is very much a product of indie rock and grunge 90s movement. It has a raw feel to it, heavy bass, and PJ's voice is incredibly distinctive as of that time. Certainly enjoyed it, but I'm also not sure it's something I'd come back to.
Avant grunge. Sounds unrehearsed and raw. Not my thing.
Fine. Early 90s female rock. Not for me.
A bit too weird and avant garde for my tastes brooke would probably love it. Nothing wrong with it per se, but I can't ever imagine myself relistening to this for fun so probably 2/5
Yawn
boring
Nah. Not for me - abrasive. I can appreciate the lyrics in places but not my cup of tea.
I liked it. Give it a 2.5. Boys immediately started wrestling each other once I put this on so it defo elicits a reaction. I may have liked it more in a different mood.
The music is good but something about her voice rubs me the wrong way.
Not for me, didn't like any of the songs. I listened through to the end just to make sure, and I can confirm it's not my cup of tea.
Yelling, not my vibe
A very slow grungy sound right out the gate, however by the middle of the album I was getting fatigued by the samey drums and bass that I was hearing. That being said, it really helped to make “Plants and Rags” really stand out and pull me back in. Then it went right back to the same sound as before, which is fine, but not enough to keep me roped in
A very raw and moody sounding album. Early British grunge sound that didn't appeal to me too much. I did check out more of her music after this album and it seems like her sounds get a little more clean and diverse. I respect where she came from and what she started as but this album feels far too amateur and rough around the edges to make for a solid project.
I understand that grunge was popular those days, but while Nirvana is from out of this world, this is mostly annoying.
It was okay, a bit too rocky for me... but not in a good way like Led Zepplin
I may have not been in the right mood, but I just couldn't vibe with this.
Well, that was all a bit angsty… ok
Not the biggest fan. Don't hate it but don't like it either. The vocals are clear, bass is prominent but guitar sounded a tad quite in some songs
Nope. Not for me.
It sounds like a very average 90s rock album. Distorted guitar ✅️ Angry/introspective lyrics ✅️ Basic song composition ✅️ Nothing stood out on the album. 2/5
It was ok. Not rly for me
Sounded like a 90s wedding band
4.5/10
Hyvin synkkä. Siksi vaikea kuunnella. Ehkä toisella kuuntelulla olisi hyvällä tavalla niin? Vähän liian meluisa mun makuuni, vaikka sepä on Harveyn ydin ja omintakeista, josta annan plussaa.
Muunneltua blues-kitarointia kauniissa mutta ysärimäisen, yksitoikkoisen synkässä muodossa.
Yeah I don't think I like Pj Harvey...
Not enjoyable, but I can't put my finger on why. Sounds similar to a number of other bands/artists in that early 90s grunge, soft/hard rock era but without any of the catchy stuff
This is another one where for me it was cool to listen to it the first time since it has a unique sound, but I can't see myself listening to it again. Nothing against the music itself, just really not my thing. PJ Harvey is a great singer though she has a perfect voice for this kinda of music.
This is the 4th PJ Harvey album that I got so far. She isn't terrible, but please I don't want anymore.
Outside of the song Joe, which I thought rocked, I ... mostly didn't enjoy listening to this. Maybe I'm too milk chocolate versus dark, but the dissonance didn't work for me a lot of the time. I get throwing out the popular music rulebook, but idk for me this throws the baby out with the bath water. I need something to ground me, and this just felt like the sort of tone setting music the artsy female protagonist in a movie listens to when she's mad at her shitty boyfriend for being shitty. Even just a hint of something rooted in gospel or blues would have really elevated the material for me. I was glad of being exposed to it though, it challenged me and she's clearly a skilled instrumentalist.
Hmmm... Chli langwilig. Töönt halt eifach nach weinerlichem gesinge. 2 Stern.
Worthy. Not dull, but...you know. A specialist taste. (Odd that I've like PJ much more over the years. Has she matured or has she sold out? depends on one's point of view, I suppose)
Dress (Dry) —
Not for me
When I rate albums on here, I try to do it at a gut level. Did I like it, really like it, love it? And even though rating music is subjective, I think I usually have persuasive reasons for my 1 or 2 star albums. This one not so much. I wasn't into it but not for any major reason. The guitars are hard and grungy, and PJ Harvey's vocals are raw. She has a punk attitude that I respect. But I don't know, the songs didn't move me. Maybe some of the music felt a little flat? I don't know if that's the right word. The riffs didn't jump out and grab me.
Not really my thing but not bad
meh.
Raw and maybe angry. May have worked with less brash instrumentation letting the words work. The tolerable parts are fleeting.
For all the talk and undoubted success, for me this was disappointingly limited musically and lyrically.
Not a fan.
Why does everyone, except other people, keep telling me PJ Harvey is good?
16th January 2022 Listened while working from home. Gym and last of us in the evening. Bit forgettable for me, surprisingly more punk and edgy than later PJ work. Hints of Florence. 2.5 if I could.
Not a huge fan, mostly because it was nothing special the songs were ok. Didn’t help that I was listening to this on the road.
Quite grungy and alternative. But none of the songs manage to reach me or evoke any response whatsoever. This just left me shrugging. 2/5
Favourite track(s): Dress; Victory THE album if you feel like listening to that band featuring your high school crush doing the vocals. She does have a nice voice but naturally sounds a little inexperienced. You don't really like the genre, some songs are just really weird but you have to acknowledge that they seem to be enjoying themselves. You certainly are jealous of that guy on the guitar because he knows how to play the cool instrument and he is vibing a little too much with your crush. It is only at your third concert of them that you notice they have a bass guy and that his lines are actually somewhat catchy. After someone tells you that your crush has been dating guitar guy for at least one year by now, your interest in that kind of Alternative Rock nose-dives - and never recovers.
2/10
My first ever generated album was a PJ Harvey alvum that I did not like one bit, but I was open to trying again. I also don't really enjoy this one even though I do prefer it out of the two. It's just not for me. I like the emotion behind the voice but not the voice itself. I did like the grunge elements.
The album was meh. There were some songs that were alright. Then there were songs that were not great and went on for way too long.
Major Courtney Love vibes with no memorable songs.
Honestly, don't remember what this album was. Took that as a sign for 2 stars
This sounds more like noise than anything else to me.
songwriting is good I just didn’t like it
I did not think this was going to be a chick singing. Oh my lover was a good starter track. Water was a good ending track. Everything else in the middle was eh. She has a nice voice though. Hard meh 4/10
Mogoče za dve zvezdici.
Not my favourite PJ Harvey, assume there's better to come.
I want to like it, but it's just too abrasive for me. Which is weird because I love Hole, Bikini Kill, L7, The Breeders, etc., lots of other amazing women led acts from the 90s that strove to share a unique point of view with the world through their music. Maybe I need to listen a few more times to acquire the taste, but I just don't have the energy for that today. It's like the music, the vocals, the melodies, and the lyrics are all fighting for my attention and I can't hear it properly. It's not creating a cohesive whole, it's creating a jarring racket that doesn't give my ears something solid to latch onto and enjoy. Sorry, PJ. I appreciate you, but I'm not into this.
No idea. I feel like the album cover gives off messy make out. I'm expecting rock! Horrible. 2/10
Not for me
This album really didn't interest me at all. Vocals were pretty bland and instrumentals were nothing to write home about. Favorite track: Victory
I found most of the album to be a bit cringy. 2/5
Unfortunately the (inexistant?) mix makes it like the voice is really hidden behind the instruments... Gives quite a raw feeling but even with that the instrumentals don't really take me anywhere (some exception like Joe, water or other... ) Without knowing it is a debut album it doesn't give a good album vibe, but a great artist vibe for sure. Medium 2.5/5
I should love pj Harvey. She is universally revered in the rock indie world. Yet I didn’t enjoy any but of this album.
Ehh. This wasn’t for me. I’m guessing she was a trendsetter being a woman playing this type of music and recording all the instruments, but the songs seemed very mid to me.
I am completely unfamiliar with this album. Alt-Rock? Grunge? Punk? Is that a cello?? Nice. Actually... multiple strings? cool. She is emotional and raw. This is growing on me a bit. I turned up the volume and it is more enjoyable. Overall I am surprised that this album would make the list of greatest all time albums. Stand out songs IMO: Dress, Happy And Bleeding, & Fountain
I was clearly not listening to the right radio stations in '92. I didn't hear about PJ Harvey until down by the water came out. These song were good, a mix between pop and punk, she is finding her place. Rid of Me is the first full album I listened to and loved from her, followed by To Bring you my Love.
Seems pretty good. Need to hear it again! 2.5/5
Not terrible but also not something I would seek out. On the low side 3* In two minds 2 or 3*
I would like it if that is the end of PJ Harvey on this list. Just cant get into it. 1.5/5
Nok 90-tall no
Sheela-na-gig is a banger but otherwise not really my style
ehh. wasnt interesting to me, didnt enjoy listening
Was a bit underhelmed when I listened to this to be honest as I've heard great things about PJ and recalled enjoying the Stories For The Cities album. Not awful, but nothing stood out either really.
Not a fan of the music. Kind of reminded me of the band Garbage.
An inauspicious, hesitant start to this album. I am never sure if I like PJ’s work or not. I think the truth that I like some and not others. I do like her voice, but find parts of this set a bit turgid. I remember when I first heard tracks like Dress and Sheila-Na-Gig and thinking they sounded very different to what was around at the time. The stripped-back rawness works on those songs, but I think I prefer her more ‘arranged’ songs, in general. The follow up - Rid Of Me - has superior songs, and more of them. Not bad, but a bit hit-and-miss for me. Which would also be my summary of her career generally.
An angry female with a guitar who knows three chords ……….. Although Good Fortune is a killer track full of energy and angst .
Pretty good, less poppy than I thought it would be.
Just not a fan
Just not my thing, even though it should be from a lot of my listening habits. Some decent moments (like Joe) but nothing that's really grabbed me and made me pay attention.
Dry by name, dry by nature. Felt like the sort of thing that I should have liked more than I did, it sounds like things I like a lot more except that it's missing something. Sheela-na-gig was excellent though.
Not for me.
Ripetitive and boring
First Listen. Like to hear this again. 2/5
instruments are great; singing sub par. not a bad album
Ok I had no idea who PJ Harvey is. Kind of a big deal?? Very experimental album dated 1992 and you can hear the grunge-y vibes without it really being grunge. I'm happy I learned about the band/artist and liked a couple songs.
