Reviews (page 6 of 8)

This reminded me a bit of The Slits album earlier on the list. I had to turn up the volume pretty high to hear the quieter parts, that made it too loud for the louder parts. Overall, not bad, she's got a good voice, it's just not quite one I'd choose to listen to again. A high 3/5.

Was fine. Listened to it a while ago and just now getting around to writing the review but I remember it being decent! 5/10

Enjoyed this, couple of stand out tracks but the rest were solid too. I imagine there is a lot more PJ in this list too so I’m looking forward to those

I would have liked this a lot as a younger person. At 40 I'm just not that angry or angst filled anymore. Still, it's pretty solid.

Female Cobain

PJ Harvey 2 days in a row! Not bad but not worth 2 albums on the list.

3.1/5 listened 5x while packing and during road trip to ATL

I'm not sure about this album, it's a bit depressing, but emotional and haunting at the same time.

There were a few songs I liked, but it wasn't as good as the other PJ Harvey album we've had.

I did enjoy this album throughout, not sure who it all reminds me of but there will definitely be some tracks added to a larger playlist.

Good parts Standout songs: Oh my lover Sheela - na - gig Plants and Rags

I liked the addition of strings on one of the songs, and it feels like the artist made songs that were personal to them. I appreciate the album for what it is, but it isn't one I would normally listen to on my own.

Mastered volume is too low.

3.5 pj she is dope but not super accessible. Dress and Sheela na gig are badass but the rest will require some more listens

Wasn’t sure what to expect as despite having heard the name PJ Harvey for years, I’ve never listened or been aware of hearing a single song. This was actually a pretty solid album, more rocky and almost grungy than I expected but no real complaints. Half stars would have been good for this one, consider it 3.5

I like PJ Harvey okay. I had heard a few of these songs but never listened to the whole album. I had the three albums she put out after this one on CD and was always lukewarm about them. PJ Harvey rocks a little too hard for my soft little heart. But only slightly. She’s close to my Goldilocks zone; but just a bit too harsh and discordant to fall into it. I’m glad she’s on this list though. She’s certainly worth hearing.

Good alternative rock from the early 1990s. It's raw and honest, I like her voice, too. But I preferred Stories from the city, stories from the sea by PJ Harvey, and I'm not familiar with her other albums yet, so I'm giving it a 3, but it's a stronger 3/3.5 overall.

Good alt rock

Pas mon style

I found the mix to be a little distracting. It sounds very pre- loudness wars. Ultimately, I don't think this album is anything special, but I'm glad I listened to it.

Some bangers on this album but I struggle with her vocal style, it gets a bit grating after a while and I start to crave something a bit more melodic. Would give another go though as it was really nice instrumentally.

Really good Great sludgy guitar, sparse, grimey, good High 3 but with a high ceiling

Another album that hits me as good music that does not engage me.

A bit Dry. But drank some Water and had a little Victory.

Best Song: Dress Worst Song: Water

In the long line of debut albums that are featured in this collection, it's a good one. But whether it's from listening to this album more than 30 years after it debuted, or just from personal taste, I didn't find it a particularly compelling or even distinctive sound or album, but also not annoying or bad or anything. I'm very glad, though, that this wasn't the first *and* last album she made (as she apparently somewhat feared at the time), as she's clearly a gifted musician and artist, and it's impressive that every album she's done sounds very different from previous ones (or so Wikipedia tells me). (As a long aside, when I saw this album in the daily rotation, I thought I had a different album by PJ Harvey, so was curious why this one made it into the collection. And then discovered I was thinking of the band Harvey Danger (and the album was "St James Version"), which has zero connection to PJ Harvey aside from somewhat contemporaneous debut years.)

I respect PJ but don't actually enjoy her music that much

I had 2 of her other albums earlier on this list. The first thing that I noticed is that all of these albums have a different overall sound. Stories From The City has a folk vibe, Rid Of Me is super raw and noisy (produced by the late Steve Albini, RIP), and this one has a more polished alternative rock sound. This even ventures into noise rock territory. She definitely took some influence from Sonic Youth with the dissonant and weird guitar moments. The only thing I can’t really get into is her voice. However, her albums always keep my attention and I’m glad I was able to explore her music through this list.

grungy

Indie rock. Ni fu ni fa.

Dramatic, hard-charging alt rock. Production is a bit lo-fi with a mid 70s NY punk vibe (e.g. Patti Smith, Television). Highlights: "O Stella" (catchy riff rocker), "Victory" (prominent bass riff and woozy guitars), "Sheela-Na-Gig" (a few interesting hooks)

A bit of a parallel to Broken English by Marianne Faithful. Sad to hear that, 30 years on, many of the albums themes are unresolved.

Pretty good alt rock. Not as good as Rid Of Me, which I heard on the RS500 when I did that, or the 2011 one that I can’t quite remember the name of - Let England Shake, I think? (yeah I got it right good job me) Anyway, 3 stars seems appropriate.

Wat goede nummers, verder rommelig

I've never listened to a full PJ Harvey album but I'm pleasantly surprised.

Nirvana-esque grunge

Good vocals and great guitar

It was fine, you can tell it’s a debut despite not knowing anything about this artist prior to listening. Dislike the herpes cover art (2.5/5)

This is the second PJ Harvey album I've heard from the list. I feel like the other one I heard was way better than this one. This one is good, but having heard some of her later work, there's clearly much more to be desired from this album.

Schöner Indie-Rock mit unverwechselbarer Stimme.

Helt ok

Interesting and unique, but not quite my vibe, honestly.

This was such a strange experience for me. Some tracks I enjoyed but others I couldn't wait to be through.

Alright. Pretty good. I liked it better than the other PJ album (which everyone seems to think is better). More aggression here I think. I thought differently about this album when I found out it was her debut, which I’m not sure what to make of. Solid 3.

This may be an off-beat opinion, but I would bet that Olivia Rodrigo would be a fan. SUre, she's pop, and PJ is Alt Rock, but there are definite similarities in the guitar riffs and vocals.

warbly rock that stands out from the rest. pj has this... like i've said. this interesting, warbly voice that persists from start to finish. she kinda sings like bjork. at times. and it's pretty alright i guess! it's just... weird. some albums really hook me, some only reel me close, and some, like this one... it's at a standstill. good stuff but not my cup of tea too much.

I enjoyed it, but no one song quite grabbed me enough for 4 stars.

I just didn't find this record compelling.

Generous with 3 stars because this was an iconic album of the 90’s, but it’s hard to listen to 30 years later.

Dry is the debut album by the English band PJ Harvey. This alternative/indie rock album was critically acclaimed at release for its wild and clever music - headlined by singer-songwriter PJ Harvey. It has been certified silver in the UK. This was an amazingly beautiful debut album that PJ Harvey poured her heart into along with the rest of the band. It has to be listened to to truly understand the eccentricity of this album. I recommend this album to any fan of indie rock.

I’ve heard many of her other songs and albums before, but not this one. I found a couple of songs I really enjoyed and the album, overall, was decent. Then I re-listened to “Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea” and thought that album was much better. I like how different her sound is across multiple albums and appreciate all of her music. Overall, glad I heard this, but not my favorite from her.

Very interesting sound, like her voice a lot!

Not bad!

I thought this was quite good!

not really a fan of PJ Harvey

It’s definitely a certain mood.

Interesting. I was not familiar with her music. It sounds like if Debbie Harry was singing with The Velvet Underground. Overall it's not my style, but I did enjoy listening to it.

Better than Hole but the same category

Me gustó

She’s at her best doing this stuff

Joah...

Big fan of all of the guitar riffs! Good voice has grunge vibes!

I don't know PJ Harvey that well but I like her vibe. She was huge in the UK in the 90s, I think she's got a few on this list.

Really great in parts, kind of dull and not interesting in others. I like her voice and some tracks were strong enough to justify a 3 from me.

This sounded so much ahead of their time, would've never guessed the release date. Pretty good and reminds me of a few bands from the 2000s... Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Florence + The Machine, etc. 7/10.

Female led 90s punk band delivers the expected. Nothing exciting. Low 3

There’s better PJ Harvey records, this didn’t move me too much.

I listened but I was distracted trying to do stupid ServiceNow stuff. Nothing really caught my ear. 3 stars.

Favorite Tracks: Sheela-na-gig Oh My Lover O Stella

This album is dope. Pretty incredible debut record, with PJ's vintage laissez-faire attitude all over it. I could never put my finger on who her influences were, but in her vocal style I hear a combination of the syncopation bjork often has, and the melodies of Robert Smith. All wrapped nicely in a grunge era tone. I personally prefer some of her later records, specifically "Stories From The City..." but it was fun going back to this, been a few years.

Love Riot Girl music. Had only heard the name PJ Harvey, but had no frame of reference for what genre it was, or who it was. Vocals are super dry, making them nice and punchy without being super processed. Great guitar parts.

Liked the general sound of most of these songs, liked the rough and ready feel, but they largely seemed to be one or two ideas short. Nice vocals without being really impressive, feels like this is very much a 3.

I really dislike grunge and alternative rock from the 90s. Some songs weren't that bad, but it didn't move me in general.

Yeah, it's obviously dry.

Indifferent, I can't say I particularly liked or disliked it. Stand-out: Dress

Not her best but still pretty damn good. 3.5/5

Liked this, but maybe a bit too spare and straightforward for me to really dig into. Definitely need to dig further into the PJ catalogue. Three and a half. Fave track: Plants and Rags

First real dive into PJ Harvey, except for a few songs here and there. Really a lot to like, and really promising for further listening on some of her other albums. Will keep this score modest for now but am eager for some further exploration of her music. Three and a half. Fave track: Happy and Bleeding

Fountain good

PJ Harvey's debut album and the fourth of her records on this list. This is a raw and unpolished statement of intent, but it doesn't hit the heights of some of her later work. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Sheela-na-gig Date listened: 11/11/23

Enjoyed the listen, but it’s not my favorite PJ Harvey.

solid. chords and noise that feel like poems.

I bet Bryce was happy when this came up.

This is an interesting album that I'm unfortunately largely indifferent to. Can't say if I'd regularly rotate, despite many tracks being exceptional. Standouts include O Stella, Victory, Sheela-na-gig, Plants and Rags, and Water.

PJ Harvey falls into that category of artists for me that although I've tried to listen to a lot of their work, and maybe even found some of it pretty enjoyable, they've just never clicked with me to the extent I expected. Given the style of music she makes I thought i'd enjoy her stuff more, but it always just sits in the "yeah this is pretty good" bucket. Same here, although the rougher production and songs do suit her well. I'll continue to come back to her music every now and then to see if my opinion changes, but for now, it's fine.

this was solid. I was distracted and need to listen again but I liked it

Several great songs out of the gate. Started all blending together later on. I liked it

I prefer my steaks meadium rare to raw.

I thought this album was decent in the most uninspiring way. I mean, I dug the beats, I dug some the sounds and for the most part, thought the album was a rocker, yet I left feeling there wasn't a lot that made me want to come back and revisit. Again, doesn't make it bad, it just didn't hit the "get me excited" level I am seeking from this list. I even let the genre play out after my 2nd listen and thought most of what I heard was decent too. So back to this album, again good. Nothing really I thought was outright terrible. Maybe it was her voice, but thought some of the songs sounded very similar. Anyway, a couple stood out. I really liked the music in Victory and thought it was a good groove tune. Sheela-Na-Gig was another banger. Maybe I'll go back and read the lyrics, but is this a dude's girlfriend thats's a prostitute? Put the money in the hole, wash the pillows, wash your breast before you see me? Maybe it's just my dirty mind. Anyway, all I got. A decent banger for a Monday morning. 3

3 This was fine, but most of it sounded the same and ran together. Sheela-Na-Gig was probably my favorite song, but really I think it’s just the only one that stood out to me. As a whole, I don’t feel like this album gave me a lot to comment on, and after Sheela-Na-Gig especially it feels like you hit a stretch of weaker songs. Finding out what a Sheela-Na-Gig actually is was interesting though, to say the least. Probably shouldn’t have looked up on my work computer. Overall, I will say this is much more in line with how I expected PJ Harvey’s music to sound as compared to Let England Shake. I definitely prefer the more alternative rock style of her music here, but once again, I wouldn’t say it’s anything special. Don’t have much else to say on this one - after just having listened to Led Zeppelin I, I gotta say this album has much stronger “debut” vibes to it than Zeppelin’s did. But then again, it’s probably not fair to compare most groups to Led Zeppelin.

actually really enjoyed this one, only good for background music but would possibly actually put it on again

God, I would love to know what kind of dirt PJ has on these list writers because this is getting out of hand. This was my favorite of her albums we’ve listened to so far - a bit more grungy and velvet underground-y. Plants and Rags was good. Still though, not much different from the other stuff. A high 3.

First of all, there a just too many PJ Harvey albums on this list. That said, I think this is the best of what we've heard. Since it's her debut, as far as I'm concerned she didn't get better with time. The record definitely has some Nirvana/grunge feel to it that helps.

Horrible album cover, luckily for it the contents within are much better. 3.5 / 5

Eh 🤷‍♂️

T1 - P. Good T2 - Meh T3 - Okay T4 - P. Good T5 - Okay T6 - Okay T7 - ok T8 - ok T9 - ok t10 - ok t11 - P good

Good PJ LP that sits at a nice intersection between her more aggressive songwriting and catchier, radio-friendly side. Can’t say any of these tracks will stick with me, but they’re well-executed and raw so I can’t ask for much more.

Like it. So much to hear and feel. Seems a bit raw and mixed poorly at times, leaving the lyrics secondary to the instrumentation. But overall I like it.

PJ is cool

Indie rock. Ni fu ni fa.

Spiky, yes, and energetic, yes, and certainly edgy, too. Let England Shake is a vastly better record; this is above average (and not by a ton), with three plus-plus songs, “Happy and Bleeding” and “Sheela-Na-Gig” and “Dress." Editors of 1,001 overrate PJH; 0.4% is too great a proportion.

This album was full of raw, dirty guitar sounds and grungy female voices. And while it wasn’t fully for me I could totally understand why this could be someone’s favourite album. Now give me the Last Living Rose and I’d be all over it.

This is right down my alley but I think I just heard it on the wrong day. I'll give it a go again down the road.

Highlights: "Dress," "Happy and Bleeding," "Plants and Rags," For so many 1-section songs, surprisingly diverse, if not always strong -- the opener might be the worst on the album. Some of the songs sound prescient of stripped down '00s mall rock, others are Siouxsie with a Sonic Youth veneer, and a few sound like the thrashier grunge of acts like The Toadies. Hard to call it all innovative, but there's lots of potential in the vocal performance and some strange harmonic choices. Decent quality throughout and some memorable pieces.

Maybe rated this one a little high? I remember and enjoyed future work better.

I liked it, 3.4

There’s something here. Just perhaps not mine

Pretty good 90s

It was fine. Might go back.

Cool pinkish sounds.

Stoer wuuf, die Polly!

The album is quiet, had to be turned up from where I've listened to every other album. Definitely seems to follow the path transitioning Punk to Grunge in the early 90's with hints of Indie.

Chill guitar riffs with great voice

The dynamics were all over the place and the track with strings made me grit my teeth but it is still better than some of the 2s I've given out.

Pretty solid, didn't give star blow me away though.

I love this intro to the album. Sleazy guitar riff and evocative vocals. I really like how raw this record is. I kind of wish there was another guitar or something though- for some reason it sounds like it has a pretty weak low-end. Like the bass guitar has no bass in it or is way too low in the mix. This was a fun listen. Overall I dig the sound and the mood but it didn't blow me away or anything.

I enjoyed this album from PJ Harvey more than I enjoyed “Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea”. What’s important to note however is that this is the “band” PJ Harvey and not “Solo” PJ Harvey so that may be a contributing factor.

There is an appealing strangeness and quirkiness to Harvey's lyrics and vocal delivery that would've kept me hooked; were it not for the alt rock backing, which seemed to become less daring the deeper I got into the album. Not bad, all told.

Enjoyed. I've never quite done a deep dive into all things PJ, but I don't ever dislike listening to her. "Happy and Bleeding" was fun. "Plants and rags." I like the slower, quirkier stuff more than the grunge-laced riot grrrl tracks. But hey, 1992. I get it.

I absolutely love PJ Harvey, but I also hold her later albums in MUCH more regard. Like good wine, her music improved with age. I'll put it this way, of all her albums, I wouldn't have picked this one for this list.

yeeehaw baby

This didn't do it for me. I guess you have to listen to it closely a few times.

Another basic album

Bit grungey

I wouldn't turn it off if it was on the radio, but I wouldn't necessarily seek it out either.

Alright! This was good! Only heard “Let England Shake” prior to this and I wasn’t a massive fan, I’m still not but this was good! How often would I reach for it? Not often enough to end up in my collection, but it’s certainly something I wouldn’t switch off if it popped on the stereo.

It’s good. It paved the war for so much but that road is so well traveled the uniqueness is lost.

British Alanis Morrissette? I feel like I've already heard this album just by watching Peaky Blinders. Tbh it was much more compelling as a soundtrack.

Not a big fan of Harvey, but I liked this album more than her other work. Did seem to be just a little noisy at parts, but it was cool. Not for me though. 3/5

Not bad at all. “Dress” is actually quite the banger.

didn't do much for me, maybe it's just not my style ?

It's alright.

Much like every time I've encountered PJ Harvey, I was neither impressed nor put off. It's just barely alright enough to be frustrating. There's an edge here that I like but they just... don't quite take it far enough. You're left feeling like every song stops just shy of completion.

Voice got quite jarring after a while Quite winey it's a no

A refreshingly original version of rock music. I may enjoy the ”sound” more than the songs themselves. Good regardless

Not too bad, a bit rough around the edges.

Well my heart sunk at yet another PJ, the artist I have most tried to like but failed too. She was the chosen autoplay artist after Throbbing Gristle, afterall. And yet - for whatever reason - I'm OK with this one. Did some lyric reading, that didn't shed any further light though. Maybe I should revisit the other ones...

It's pretty much what you'd expect

Liked this a lot more than the other PJ album on here. Was a lot more raw and fun

I liked this better than the one I listened to earlier in the list. Seemed more uptempo.

Quite nice, interesting album. Sorta music for musicians but perfectly listenable. I dunno, three? Three.

Third album I’ve listen to from this artist. The first I really liked. The second I kind of hated. And this being her debut, I was unsure how I’d feel before listening. Glad to say I enjoyed it. A strong debut album. Great blues, indie rock sound.

not my usual taste, but i ended up enjoying it. i feel no need to listen to it again though. therefore 3/5

Not super interesting. Nothing extraordinary but ok.

La routine

je ne sais pas je ne sais plus

almost didn't listen to it out of principle for ugly album art. but it was fine when I did listen, not really what I expected.

Forgive me Adam I know this will be a 4 or 5 for you... didn't really spark my interest except for the last couple of tracks.

good: oh my lover, meh: o stella, bad: Sheela na Gig as outras não anotei. achei ok? não é muito a minha vibe tbm mas os instrumentais achei legal pelo menos

reminded me a bit of fiona apple and I know we got another of her albums this year at some point but I did like this one better. Still isn't something I'd keep listening too but I enjoyed some of the tracks and I like her voice.

Bracing myself for a swath of PJ Harvey albums since I found out she's British. That's how it goes, artist you've never heard of has their entire catalog on this list because they're from the UK. Anyway, this one's pretty solid, I think I liked it more than the last. It's got a cool grunge edge to it that made it memorable, but not too many tracks will be staying in my playlist. Favorite tracks: Dress, Fountain. Album art: Yuck. Dry lips? Is that what we're going for? Someone's face smushed against the glass, I don't think it's PJ herself though. It's a memorable cover though, I'll give her that. 3/5

I like PJ's powerful sound but I'm a bit surprised she has two (at least two, I haven't listened to all 1001 albums yet) in the top 1001 albums of all time.

it was okay, a bit slow, wouldn’t listen again.

Pas trop mon style

Never heard of PJ Harvey. Has some early grunge vibes which I like. Nothing seems to grab or offend. I would call it a good album, but forgettable.

Solid grunge album. Strong voice. Need to give a relisten later

Might give it a 4 if I kept listening. Really hit a cord. Reminds me of a more simplistic TOOL with the lack of instrumental depth but what it’s got is less for each instrument than tool has. Less complex too but had the bass forward rifts

Pretty good

Alright! A PJ Harvey album that I didn’t find obtuse. There’s some catchy rhythm packages on this one. I felt like this was more a band and less a solo artist.

It’s alright

Kinda sleepy day, continuous ebb and flow, everything okay, gonna miss that friendship a while though

The first PJ Harvey album I’ve ever listened to and it was okay. Gets a bit monotonous by the end but a pretty solid album. Would listen to it again and looking forward to checking out some of her other albums. This one was fine.

With many singer-songwriter-type albums, they tend to not click with me on first listen but then either grow on me or just stay uninteresting to me. Same here, I appreciate the lyrics and some of the songwriting but it just does not fully click yet.

Ég fíla röddina, en lögin eru bara so so. Alls ekki leiðinlegt, en grípa mig ekki við fyrstu hlustun. Gæti hlustað aftur, en þarf þess ekki.

I love PJ's middle period but her early period is a bit too scratchy for me to really get into it. It's ok, but nothing compared to what would come five or so years later.

There's Bono in her voice. But where his mannerisms are pointed inwards, as an ingestion his own significance, Polly Jean's head in the other direction, projecting rounded vowels and hard consonants from deep in her diaphragm. For want of a better word, we'll call it expression. In addition, she's got the earnest lyrics to match, a drummer with a vengeance, a bassist with a connection to his ass, and guitar hero aspirations of her own to rival Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker.

Interesting sound but found the album quite bland and repetitive

Overall good album, with a very distinguishable lead singer voice. But, looking back on it not a single song is memorable.

Third PJ Harvey album so far, maybe the only one that actually should be here. Still kinda bog half-grunge, but at least this time it has some get up and go about it. Has debut album energy that is kinda infectious. 2.5/5.

This was fine.

A little out there but alright.

This album is pure 90's.

Nice music and good songs

She gets much better later, but this is a strong debut.

Not bad

Its Polly's best but once again, more terrible poetry

I'm a PJ Harvey fan, but I had never listened to this album from front to back until now. Love the raw emotional sound of this album. Her voice brings me back to my teen years, when MTV still played music, and hearing Björk, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos - groundbreaking female alt artists. Enjoyed this, and when taking into account her other work, she's a legend. Fav track: Sheela-Na-Gig

Really solid album. I feel like I’d like it the more I listen to. Victory was a stand out track. Wish I could give this 3.5 stars.

DRESS SHEELA-NA-GIG JOE

Was alright. Not a genre I’d normally listen to, some bearable tracks but all took a while to get into, some I scanned through. If you like a bit of whingy grunge rock full of hate and loathing then you might like this.

I like her collaborations on other people's albums but not sure on the variety on her own. I gave the last one a bad review (rid of me). Very gutsy and raw with a lot of vocal repetitions (deliberate for affect). I'm liking the guitar/bass/drums better on this one though- kinda grungey.

Was excited to heat some more of her music. This album was pretty middle of the road for me. It wasn't bad, but it didn't super stand out,

p702. 1992. 3 stars The source of skinny white chick rock. Well done of its kind, but a lot of the songs tend to blur into one another after a while.

first listen i liked the bass tone

I think my friend Leah would call this “angry woman music”: high marks from her. Pretty good stuff, I like the edge but I prefer the rawness of Veruca Salt and Bikini Kill a little more.

2.5/5. Not the worst alt rock I;ve heard, but definetly not ejoyable.

One of those albums that I've always wanted to love, but never really given it close attention. There was so much competition in the early 90's when it came to spending your weekly music allowance. Polly Harvey somehow slipped through the cracks. I think it was because she didn't fit into the early 90's scene as Britpop was starting to bubble. Thirty years later and the post rock sound really appeals to me. Sheela-na-gig is an absolute romp of a song.

I love PJ Harvey - though perhaps her other albums more than this which I hadn't listened to before

It's the second PJ Harvey album that I got on this list. Until now, I'm still not in the hype, but it's a nice album, nothing so much special about it.

This is a hard one to review - its powerful and lyrically great. Bit I wasn't as keen as I could be. All the music felt a bit sludgy.

"Dry" is about right. A bit scratchy too, perhaps. Good but I tend to admire it from a distance rather than really like it as such; I think better things lay ahead of her.

I thought it might be a bit of a difficult 2 star listen at first, but it quickly got into its stride. Then I just got more and more into it, with that 90s rock sound that I think holds up well, and Polly's voice really hitting the mark with me. If it had a couple more real bangers I'd be tempted to give this 4, but overall it's just a pretty good album that has me keen to listen to more Peej.

Enjoyed this a lot, alt rock with some neat twists, this shit was dry! But I mean that in a good way! 3.5/5

Not bad, enjoyed it. Cool. I like PJ more than most alternative rock I know of. Some songs/chord progressions felt very Nirvana-esque (a term that doesn't mean much during the age of grunge, because everything sounded like that). Plants and rags was nice, a more unique track on the album I think I liked this more than the other PJ Harvey album I had a few months ago.

The odd songs are better than the even songs until song 6. Never quite gets her hooks into me, I enjoyed Plants and Rags.

VIC. TOR. Y.

This is all right, but it ain't gettin' in the way of my Elton John!

PJ Harvey is a good singer but her music is not the kind that I listen to...

Water only song available on Spotify

I was not familiar with PJ Harvey work. I had mixed feelings on this album. I liked Happy and Bleeding the most. I would definitely give this album another listen as well as some more of her catalog.

I was not familiar with the band PJ Harvey, let alone the album, but I'm a sucker for 90s grunge women, as they typically come with sultry, gritty, smoky vocals. In that regard, this album did not disappoint. Each track is its own emotional rant wrapped in edgy guitar, raw lyrics, and powerful vocal roars. While a lot of grunge is influenced by blues, I found the bluesy tribute particularly prominent in this album. I was pleasantly surprised by a couple of tracks that even feature "cello rock", which is typically a fairly niche indie subgenre. This is another album for me where I felt like the entire album on its own was more significant than individual tracks. Overall, a fun discovery and listen for me.

Very cool stuff going on here. Unexpectedly, it brought to mind some of the Beat and Beat-influenced spoken-word (or semi-spoken/semi-sung) works in the 50s and early 60s. And there's also the obvious grit and raw distorted sound they use, kind of indie and punk elements. I think 'Plants And Rags' sounds particularly interesting to me. I'm not skilled enough in music to tell anyone what's going on there, other than broad observations like dissonance, but maybe there's some diminished and tritone stuff in there? Jarring, and no doubt quite intentionally. Even though the general sound and approach started to feel a little repetitive to me by the end of it, I like this album.

pretty good, unexpected suprise.

Third PJ Harvey album on here and this is my favourite

Nothing really stands out for me in this album but I am excited to listen to her subsequent works

You must listen to this album before you die, otherwise you will die believing that Anna Calvi and Amanda Palmer were the ultimate women in rock. (6/10) FT: Dress, Sheela-Na-Gig

Loved it when it came out

I am surprised she has so many albums on this list. A great talent with a strong vocal proficiency and control. I just can’t really get into any of the songs. She aims to be alternative in a very desperate sounding way.

Not a bad album but personally just a bit too unorthodox and weird

Gahh, can't even finish this album the first time through it. The voice is too quiet relative to the music, requires concentrating too much and hard to hear what she's saying. If you don't know what she's saying the backing music isn't enough to carry the song/album on it's own. 2nd attempt with Spotify Lyrics. Sheela-Na-gig : better once I understand what she's saying. Dress: same. Much better now that I know what she's saying. Still, not going to be my favorite album. I'll put a few songs in my favorites at least.

Will listen to more, great debut.

I liked this album more than I thought I would. Back in the mid 90s, I listened to an album of PJ Harvey's (not sure which) because there were bands that I liked that liked Harvey's music. I even had a chance to see her perform on Letterman. I didn't like what I heard. I was suprised that this album was okay.

Good singer

Was OK

Lady British Grunge. This is one of those bands where the frontwoman's poetic voice and presence is what makes the band what they are, but their actual voice holds them back. Some great power chords, though. Best track: Dress

The artist is definitely growing on me, I wasn't so sure last time I listened to one of her albums. I do enjoy the kinda grungy sound and vocals, and 'dress' is a great song. Almost a 4

Good guitars and beats - harbingers of better music to come from PJ. Cool grungy 90s music, but no great hooks or riffs to bring me back for a second listen.

Better than the last album of hers we listened to for sure.

Good, but not her best

Smukt og rodet. Fabelagtigt sonisk univers. Råt og usødet.

udmærket, rid of me albummet er bedre

Indierock, råt, rimelig langsomt, poetisk

just could not get into it and I dont know why

I dig her lilt and her anger but could have used less of the former and more of the latter. It felt like watching a fuse burn down without ever getting the expected explosion. That being said, this album hits some pretty cool chords, I just wish it unleashed a little more.

It was very much of its time. PJ Harvey has a great rock voice.

First track is like a female Cure. I'm digging it! This thing moves along nicely. Tight little moody, alt-rock album. PJ Harvey is like an edgier Alanis Morrissette. It's a very complete album. Lots of feminine power in here. There is also a jazz component to her music, especially with Plants and Rags. At the end, there does feel like a thread runs through this album, but I'm not quite sure what it is. There are sevearl songs named after people, song titles are all very simple and short, some instrumentation is similar between tracks, but maybe it's more to create mood. It does get a little redundant, as many moody albums do, and while not totally memorable, it was a bit of a surprising album, and I have a better idea of who PJ Harvey is now.

This is a tough album for me to rate. PJ Harvey is an artist that I have tons of respect for, but I never want to listen to her music. I recognize it as good, but it just doesn't speak to me personally. It almost certainly is in the upper 50% of albums on this list, though.

Good. I knocked off a .1 point for album cover. 3.4

Better than I was exoecting

So grungy.

Good, not great.

Sound peg in the rquare hole. This album was lost on me. I tried to make this work. I wanted to like this but was never successful.

Actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Listened 3 times. Fav tracks would probably be Oh My Lover, Plants and Rags, maybe also Sheela- na- gig.

listened to 1 song its fine

listineningnow

I'm literally not cool or patient enough to listen to this. I wish that oh my lover was faster with some slower lines to emphasise them instead of relying on the instruments etc. Something I would have liked a few years ago but it's kinda meh now. O Stella is what Oh My Lover should be like. Joe is pretty cool, makes me think of a surfing montage for some reason though... Love plants and rags. Overall, reminds me of the show misfits

All three of the albums so far have felt very repetitive to me. I like this one a lot though.

euh jsp bof ok

energetic instrumentals, sweet voice, very 90s distortion

better than her other one, but still not my thing

Cooles Album!

Sounds like an English Alanis morrisette mixed with Nirvana. Not really my bag upon first listen but can understand the appeal.

Has alot of musicalities that I like but I couldn't connect with it unlike Polly's other albums.

moody, probably badass

Not bad so far but I just feel like I'm trapped in the 90s. Which obviously sounded fresh at the time. But I'm finding a lot of these albums sound very stuck in their time. Which is probably self fulfilling: these eras sound this way because these defining albums came about. But I have trouble listening to something that, to my fresh ears, sounds almost like parody of an era's style. Welp... TIL about Sheela Na Gig. Interesting. "Joe" has a cool intro. Funkier than I expected. The album itself feels a bit thin though. Like it's EQ'd/mastered weird. But it could also just be my headphones/laptop. I'm using bluetooth from my laptop which isn't my norm so I don't want to judge it on that. Yea... I guess a 3? It wasn't bad. And I see how it probably sounded great in the 90s. Especially for women. But it doesn't do much of anything special for me in 2021. Again, with decimals, I'd maybe give it a bit higher. But I don't even know about a 3.5. Maybe slightly below that.

Polly Jane rocking out. She's great. BT: Dress, Sheela Na Gig, Hair

I do like a bit of Peej but this isn't one of my favourite albums of hers.

La bonne PJ, j’adore en corrigeant. Manque juste la petite cigarette

Had some raw punk-y vibes, but not something I'd actively go back to listen to.

better from PJ.

Not listened to it for 10 years but still sounds good and raw

Compulsively put on chap stick every time I saw the album art. Accidentally listened on shuffle. Was okay, but not very memorable. 5?

Promising. She gets better

Oh, the trials and tribulations of being a grrrrl! This album gives voice to a young, angsty PJ Harvey, creating a playground for grungy guitars, howling vocals, and urgent drums. Hadn't listened to this album in full since I can't remember when - always gravitate to its strongest tracks, "Plants And Rags" and "Dress", which are exceptional and have been on heavy rotation since 2000. Harvey draws from some of the best grunge elements of the era, tempering chaos, raw emotion, with grounded songwriting. This is a terrific preview for "Rid of Me" and "To Bring You My Love", which both expand and mature her sound.

Nunca la había escuchado. Mucho rock! Voy a escuchar más trabajos.

Singles from Dry "Dress" Released: December 1991 "Sheela-Na-Gig" Released: February 1992

Gross album cover and middling alt-rock. At least it's slightly better than the other PJ Harvey in my opinion... 6

Decent - would probably benefit from further listens

Honestly thought this was going to wind up being some average grungy album, but I actually enjoyed it more than I thought. There were some good tracks on here, and even though I don’t plan on coming back to it, it was a pleasant surprise. Would love to give it something higher than a 3, but it’s not quite a 4 for me Favorite track(s): “Victory,” “Hair,” and “Plants and Rags”

The front half had potential, it just fell apart after that though

Rock indie. Interesante .

Mon hit: Sheela-Na-Gig
