Reviews (page 6 of 8)

Half listened with Dan

Never cared much for this band, and at the beginning my biases were confirmed. Each song was pretty similar to the other. That changed somewhat near the tail of the album, with the longer songs being more interesting. I liked this a little more than I expected. 3.49/5

I seem to remember having the tape of this with the censored cover. It's almost weird to see this cover art. That said, this is pretty good, but not near as good as Nothing's Shocking, which is a tape I wore out quite literally. Played so much it erased itself. Reading up on this, I learned that there was this entire back story to the album that I didn't know about and, now that I know... it's still pretty good. This one meanders too much for me. This cover is great, though.

This would be a good, if not a little clattery, rock record were it not for Perry Farrell, quite one of the more irritating presences in popular entertainment. So - four stars for the music, minus one due to the Farrell Factor.

Pretty good album. I'm not a huge Jane's Addiction fan aside from their hits but this wasn't unenjoyable, just not something I'd probably come back to as a full album. Some solid songs and an interesting second half. Standout Tracks: Stop, Been Caught Stealing, Three Days, Classic Girl

its' ok, nothing to talk home about

When they're on, like on the single "Ain't no right", it's good. But there are too few moments like this on the album, so overall you have to be into their sound and Perry Farrell's voice can get annoying pretty quickly. I think it's just not for me, but I can understand why it was important/other people like it/why it is on the list.

The album was pretty good. Some well known songs. Dave Navarro is good at guitar. The album isn't too long but the last four songs could have each been shorter. Three Days didn't need to be 10 minutes long, then the next two didn't need to be 8 and 7 minutes respectfully. Lyrically the songs are just ok. It is between a 2 and a 3 but I will round up.

The 90s were weird

It has a couple of fantastic songs, but Aint no right wasn't right.

Interesting sound, challenging at times. Stop and Been Caught Stealing definitely stand above the pack, though i really liked Obvious and Three Days as well. Most of the other tracks aren't very memorable.

Couple good songs. The rest kinda eh.

I'm convinced that every Janes Addition song has two great songs and the rest is kinda meh. Nothing's Shocking - Mountain Song, Jane Says Ritual De Lo Habitual - Stop, Been Caught Stealing Strays - Just Because, Superhero

Top.

Cover sucks complete ass. Music is pretty good, reminds me of primus. Doesn't have a lot of personality though? I like the guitar tone and overall vibe though.

Liked this more than I thought, though I thought I might hate it. There's enough variation and bounce in the songs to keep you guessing a bit.

Jane's Addiction sound as if they are deliberately being obnoxious half the time, largely due to Perry Farrell's vocal technique. If you were a teenager looking to piss of your parents in the early 90s, playing this album on repeat would do the trick. I remember being captivated by the video for "Been Caught Stealing" as a kid and have a little nostalgic feeling for that tune. Other than that though, the rest of the album literally put me to sleep. I understand why this is on the list in terms of influence but I don't personally enjoy it. It was a strange and awkward adolescent time in the late 80s and early 90s for "alternative" music before Nirvana kicked it into full on raging puberty.

Jane's addiction have always seemed a bit like they didn't really know what they wanted to do. There's great moments in there, quite a few of them but then it lurches off to something else without pausing to fully explore an idea. Some good songs making up an album which, for me, never manages to elevate itself above pretty good

Well, I’m not a big fan but get why this is famous. The use of Spanish is shameful but I guess the intentions weren’t bad. It’s looong

Interesting punk

this was a strange one because sometimes i really enjoyed and others the voice was really obnoxious. it was new because there was rock within it, but the voice became whiny? however i’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Thought this was an unexpectedly good album. It had some decent genre variation throughout the album. There were sounds that seemed similar to modern artists so this albums impact could be understood. Overall I could listen to this again and felt that only a couple songs were skippable. 7.4/10

Even though this period of late 80s/early 90s alternative is my nostalgic sweet spot, I never could listen to a Jane's Addiction album from beginning to end. It's a little too...extra...or frenetic? When the melodies can shine through the chaos of some of their longer jammy songs, it's a joy, and the hit single here "Been Caught Stealing" is still an all-time banger. But the only other tracks I really enjoy are "Stop" and "Obvious." Maybe it just depends on how well you enjoy/tolerate Perry Farrell's voice.

Good guitar rock and songs feel more together than the last album. Maybe worth a re listen

Hard rock

I'm running into an issue here. I keep listening to these albums while I do my work. However, that means that I cannot focus truly on the music. As soon as I begin to pay attention to the songs towards the end, I'm noticing a lot that I like about this band. The vocals are surprisingly nice to my taste, I love the sound of every instrument, and the melodies are good. Yet, I can't bring myself to think it's more than a 3 or 3.5. I can only conclude that this will be something that would grow on me since there really isn't anything I dislike; just not a whole lot that blows me away.

Just background music

Apart from one decent song the rest was pretty average

I hate Jane's addiction and their songs are too long

I *really* hated this album when it came out. I was wrong. It's ok. Some if it is even pretty good, like the opening track. Three and a half stars, rounding down in honor of my younger judgmental self.

Maybe slightly better than mid?

3.3 - Starts out loud and dumb as any Jane’s Addiction record. Perry Ferrell doesn’t so much sing as taunt in a “nya nya nya nya” way. Side B lets up on the hard rock bumrush and there are some actually nice moments, particularly during “Three Days.”

That's Jane's Addiction all right.

dude dave navarro is in this band. ink master. i did not know this. this positively sways this review. i read that the first halfo od the album is rock and the second half is more subdued. I liked the last song the most.

jane's certainly addicted to something. my guess would be cocaine. jane's addiction goes wild on this album. favorite song: three days

Ok, would probably enjoy it more after more listens

Day 666 and I'm very, VERY disappointed not to get Number of the Beast. I know it can be done - like how we all got the Phil Spector album on Christmas day - so it should in future FYI everyone. Or maybe this is #666 because Perry Farrell is going to junkie hell? Anyway, Jane's Addiction is good even on a bad day, but imo Nothing's Shocking is much better. I'm not sure why I gave that one a 3 - I remember loving the vocals in particular. Maybe it was because I was still less than 300 albums in and didn't feel the weight of so much SHIT on my shoulders at the time. Ah well, this one gets a 3 and if I could I'd bump Nothing's Shocking up to a 4. The playing here is really good, kinda like a mix of that emerging alt-metal sound and psychedelic bits. Vocals aren't as good as last time, not as much intensity. But I'd still happily listen to it again. 3/5.

the greatest disappointment in the world was learning that this was a bunch of dudes. this could have been so cool but noooo.

Whoever in here said there wouldn't have been a *Nevermind* without this record didn't understand where Kurt Cobain drew inspiration from at all--replace Nirvana with Red Hot Chili Pepper, and now we're talking... This minor quibble aside, what can I say about this album? It's not so bad. But it's not so good either. The second side, with its long borderline-psychedelic ballads, has certainly aged better than the first displaying those happy-go-lucky cuts reeking of rock clichés from the late 80s, ones that would soon be wiped out by the nineties indie-rock / slacker rock / noise rock/ grunge / post-hardcore explosion (take your favorite pick). I'm all for a little exhilatrated tracks with a sunny disposition here and there, but given the conspicuous absence of certain genres that can also boast of such exhilaration in Dimery's list (melodic hardcore punk, for instance--far more powerful in its directness compared to those hackneyed clichés displayed on the first side of this record), I find it quite unfair that this album should be singled out instead of others. You want to get rockers with a slightly funky subtext, led by a clear and direct voice? Go to Turnstile's last two LPs (the last one was out last year). Or go to the other melodic hardcore punk bands they kinda ripped off... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 884 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 61 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 29 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 27 (including this one)

Been Caught Stealing is a banger but the rest is pretty unmemorable

Enjoyed this far more than I expected. Quite varied. My fave - 'Of Course'

Weird album. I do get the appeal, and it's not like a few rock or punk albums on this list I could name that are just absolute noise to me. That said, the bombastic style doesn't do a whole lot for me in general. This definitely falls squarely into the category of "worth a listen, but not worth a re-listen." A few good tracks here at least. The best one was "Been Caught Stealing," IMO.

Semi ”lit”

Gott & Blandat

Epic, classic, psychotropic

While there are elements of this I really like (Klezmer anyone), it always seemed to me a hodge-podge of styles that didn't hold together for me. I remember the enormous buzz when it was released and tried to get into it at the time. I had the same issues then that I do now.

Decent enough album, last one with anything worthwhile

Ritual De Lo Habitual is like leaving a raging party in the morning after that you don't regret. Your clothes feel stale and heavy with smoke. The taste in your mouth demands attention but the sunlight streaking into the room is splitting your head. You smile at the random bits of humanity strewn across mattress-covered, worn wooden floors. You might have underwear on but that is more than whoever is startfished out in the hallway. There's grit, survival, and celebration but it also can be a bit too much.

solid 6,5/10, mogles z nami z jednej wazy

Ritual is worse in execution than the debut but far more interesting. I expected not to like it as much as I did: When the guitars get quiet, the band can't figure out how to keep a song going or end it properly, all impotent voices and flat drums. But the shoegazey bits were instantly attracting, and the transition between halves was extremely well-executed.

janes addiction more like my non-addiction to this album, am i right

I remember three of the tracks from Ritual De Lo Habitual from when they were first played on the Radio. I think I like "Been Caught Stealing" but I'm still not quite sure. I like some of Jane's Addiction's sound, but haven't been inspired to listen to much of their music. I do have a tendency to like longer tracks from a band, perhaps because they have more room to develop the song. Not surprising, "Three Days" (at 10min48sec) was my favorite track from the album. I liked the second half of the album more than the first. The first seemed to be stuck in the strange buzzed vocals of Perry Farrell, which started to wear on me.

could possibly turn into a 4 if I deep dive into Jane's Addiction and enjoy it

Ahhh…took me right back to the 90’s and teenage angst.

Doslovno bend koji nikad ne pustim (osim Jane Says) al uvijek mi oke čut ih

Split on this one in so far as I really liked the instrumentation and really hated the vocal style. I also enjoyed the second half of the album a lot more than the first half.

Cool rock, chill

Great intro that feels like is the peak of the album. Nothing else felt like it reached that level for me.

Alright album, nothing truly standout to me but worth a re-listen though.

Enjoyed some of it. Some was a bit drawn out, and the style of guitar solo really wasn't to my liking. Enjoyed the bass though.

Long song kings, men hade uppskattat lite mer filler-låtar som andningsrum???

So much 90's flashbacks.

I like the production, it’s really cool. But the style is somewhat all over the place. Perhaps a sign of the times..an 80s band entering the era of grunge and alternative rock.

Songs: Been Caught Stealing, Three Days

Ehh, it was fine.

Much enjoyed, all new to me, but it does run out of steam in the last quarter.

funky rock tunes but not a lot more than that

started off on fire - great bass, guitar screaming out. Faded half way through.

probably closer to 2.75

Catchy music, vocals are so so, lyrics didn’t grab me

Interesting listen, can't say it's my thing but didn't hate it - 2.8

Nichts weltbewegendes, aber auch nicht schlecht.

This album is fine, but I don't particularly care for it. It feels like a more boring Chili Peppers record. I liked the bottom half more than the top half, though.

Whereas Jane's Addiction's first studio album, Nothing's Shocking, had a very strong first half let down by a weak second half, Ritual de lo Habitual has the inverse problem: a great second half hampered by a lacklustre first half. Okay, that may be a little too venomous; the first half has some charm. But, it's also quite oikish and irritating, like a 14-year-old after three cans of lager. Partly this is due to the music: funk metal has aged horrendously, and it wasn't too pretty at the time. But funk metal has another aspect that worsens it further: it believes that it is the coolest music conceivable (seriously, Extreme of all groups thought they were the great arbiters of taste with Get the Funk Out). As such the first half only appeals if you're still a virgin. But the second half goes some way to redeeming the album. The obnoxiousness dissipates and the songs gain more heft as they get longer. Still, I ultimately prefer Nothing's Shocking, and I can't call this album essential.

I kinda dig it. Stop & Been Caught Stealing are 90s classics

The "hits" were always a bit grating to me, but I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the album.

First half (4 songs) were good, need to finish

there only needs to be one Jane's Addiction album on the list and it should be this one. Better songwriting (marginally), better structure, and more dogs barking. That's all you need, really. Still not a huge fan of Jane's Addiction, but I can appreciate this album a lot more than their debut, which did not impress me nearly as much.

Better than I thought, but okay.

Good, but not as great as I thought it’d be. I knew some of the songs from being in high school when it released.

First half > Second half Highlight Tracks: 1, 2, 5

Yep, just as I remembered it. Stop and Been Caught Stealing are so energetic. Navarro’s guitar is great. PF’s vocals are as nasal as I remember (weep). I want to give it a higher rating for the Gen X culture, but it just not an album I’ll be going back to.

Better than expected, good album overall

Back in the 90s, I remember that this album wasn't super well regarded. Like, it was ok, but it wasn't held up as an iconic new classic. But evidently it has aged like wine? I dunno. I had the tape but the only song I was into was "Been Caught Stealing". (Formative live experience - being on holiday in Hawaii in 1991 and my mum was mad that I was spending all the time in my hotel room watching MTV instead of "enjoying" the sun. "Been Caught Stealing" was in the Buzz Bun and was the soundtrack of that experience.) I think of this as one of those 90s albums - but around the hype of one killer single but the album itself doesn't match. There.

His voice gets annoying

October 19, 2021 Not bad. Relatively pleasant background noise, except "Ain't No Right" which was weird.

I think this album sounds like a band right in the depths absolutely marred in the depths of heroin addiction (well, cause they were). The album is pretty much split in two halves with the first half being this absolute clusterf*ck of funk rock that gets very wall of noise very quickly. The second half is this trippy prog rock that delves into the low parts of addiction and death. Listening to this it should be pretty apparent why Navarro was never going to be a good fit in RHCP. He's an excellent guitarist but it comes at the expense of writing memorable hooks. Good album but nothing that demands a second listen unless you're a fan of this genre.

It's a fast paced alt-rock bordering on metal in the first half of the album. then in the second half of the album it takes a turn to the dark side. Of which is a delve into love and loss. Firstly of Perry's girlfriend who overdosed at 19 along with his mother who committed suicide when he was 3. Overall it's an album that feels a little disjointed. Going from one side of the record to the other you'd just about think you put on an entirely different LP. Best: Stop Worst: Been Caught Stealing

I didn’t like all of it but Been Caught Stealing is good and Three Days was a pleasant surprise.

fun album, not really my kind of thing but it had some nice parts. metal can be good sometimes but for the most part I’m not one to enjoy it. I’ll give it a 6/10, I probably enjoyed Then She Did the most, I think it had a nice beginning, a cool buildup, and a really fun climax for an ending while still being a lot less fast and violent from the rest of the album. Of Course was also pretty cool, kinda sounded like a B-side Beatles track. Classic Girl was fun too, so I guess I just liked the last three songs the most. Don’t get me wrong I love fast, violent music but usually not when it’s metal, I think the slow-jam/shoegaze-like genre is more fun for me. This wasn’t really the kind of album I’d listen to just for the sake of sitting down and enjoying however I think these songs make good background music for other things to do. I could picture myself putting this on a speaker and doing chores or gaming or something. I might listen to one or two more Jane’s Addiction albums out of curiosity.

Hairy growlers filtered through fish guts. Jane's Addiction is clearly to not shave the old muff. If it was a footballer, it'd be Keith Gillespie. His promising early career was ruined by his gambling addiction. Plus, he never once shaved his pubes.

Jane's have always felt to me like a band that I should really love but they just leave me a bit cold. I can't really put my finger on why. This album is pretty decent but I can't imagine I'll listen to it again any time soon. If it was a footballer it would be Alan Shearer who I could also never muster any strong feelings about.

Half are really fun, rest ok

Fast, intense, not my style

Not bad, haven't listened to them before. Some of it was a little dated but there was a longer song towards the end that was pretty interesting.

Some really sick riffs in this but took a few songs for me to warm up to it

Prima album met de klassieker been caught stealing erop, heel herkenbare sound

It’s fine. Dude’s voice can be really annoying. Sounds like if you trained a rat to sing.

I prefer Perry Farrell's solo work but still a nice listen

I like Jane's Addiction as a band and Nothing's Shocking and various individual songs, but this album is merely ok to me. The songs are not that outstanding and the production is a bit messy.

I listened to this album way to much in my early 20s. A couple of classic songs, plus some interesting jams on side two. Not groundbreaking, but it carved its own niche in the grunge era.

Comunque secondo me è un discreto 3.

catchy. almost a 4.

It's alternative rock from the 90s, pretty average. I have no strong opinions about it.

It was ok. Something I would have listened to when I was about 16 maybe.

Enjoyable. Mostly.

-Great bass and guitar shredding on "No One Leaving" -I like a lot of the bass. Great riffs and grooves. ie "Been Caught Stealing" and "Obvious" -Idk what it is but I feel like I should have liked this more than I did. Maybe because the singer kind of sounds like Axl Rose but isn't as good in my opinion?

Meh. 3 stars8

Much of this album feels like a bit of a chore, the blame for which I place firmly at the feet of Perry Farrell’s grating vocals. Thankfully there is enough on here to counteract that, Dave Navarro’s guitar is great throughout and Three Days in particular the standout moment on the album.

A decent album but wouldn't be drawn back to listen again. Been Caught Steeling is a fucking banger though👌

I can pretty much insert my review for Nothing Shocking in here….. brilliant guitar and sound but broadly the flow and feel is ruined by Perry Farrells vocal style.

also pretty good. hard rock/soft metal album 3.5

Half of the album are hard rock songs and the other half is more progressive rock. I like the Klezmer-influenced song. (6/10) Favorite Track: Of Course

I know this album all too well from the countless times my college roommate played it. So I already have a pleasant attachment to this one. He also listened to "Nothing's Shocking" even more, probably because that's the better album. Been Caught Stealing is an all timer. Overall, it's fine.

A couple of good songs.

I don't know how I never heard about this before, this was really good. When I first saw that this was today's album I was a bit bummed because I didn't think I would like this, but it took me by surprise. Great album.

Being a big alternative rock guy I new coming in I would like this. Never listened to them again, but I was still a little underwhelmed. Some interesting ideas on the second half the album. Favorite Songs: Stop, Obvious, Then She Did

Ehh just ok for me. Like a lot of bands I do like them better live than studio recorded. But still, I just think Jane's Addiction isn't quite for me.

Really great songs on here with a mix of a few that were a bit underwhelming/forgettable. The sound is a cool mix between grunge and the glossier 80’s sounding rock that was waning at the time. Really cool music videos as well- loved Been Caught Stealing and Stop!

Good but never one of my favorites.

I found this one to be a more enjoyable listen than “Nothing’s Shocking”. Gets a little long and weird towards the end but there’s some pretty awesome songs on the front half that really let Navarro’s guitar work shine.

The album is quite interesting. Has some odd cover art. I am not the biggest fan of the singer's voice. The songs are each quite intersting and seem to explore different, but intersting, things.

Great album but I prefer their later and more polished stuff ("fucking impudent mainstream wanker")

I liked some of the songs when they first came out. Some really clever music and rhythms that were a lot of fun in some songs. Not as into them anymore, but still enjoyable to listen to again.

Perry's voice can only be listened to in short doses.

I liked this album a lot more than I expected. Jane's Addiction has always just been a name on the tshirts of grungy (not cool 90's grungy, just grungy grungy) kids in high school and middle school for me. But this album was pretty interesting. I especially like "Of Course" with the lyrics: When I was a boy My big brother held on to my hands Then he made me slap my own face

Very good

Not as bad as I was expecting - more upbeat.

One that passed me by originally - except for Been Caught Stealing... Am probably missing the cultural context of how this was ahead of its time etc. Of Course is pretty different to what I expected - the rest is a bit noisy.

Way less chili peppers esque than I expected. I know Navarro was only in the band for a bit and I think he’s not the main creative outlet in JA (not sure why I have that assumption. It’s totally based on nothing but stereotypes about lead singers and frontmen doing songwriting). But yea, I expected more funk rock stuff. But definitely not a bad album by any means. It sounds “dated” but not in a corny way. Just like oh yea I can tell where they were influenced and where they were influencers but without sounding like in living in a time capsule. Which is nice. I’d probably give it a 3.5 with decimals. But I’m hesitant to go 4 here. So prob 3? I don’t know. Nothing personal to them. I’m just bad at rating.

Reminded me of OffSpring or early Chili Peppers. Liked it and would give it another listen.

That was far more eclectic than I expected. Solid album, but sort of hard to quantify.

Liked it. Love those Tommy drums. Been caught Stealing is a classic and Classic Girl is the highlight - nice build up.

Vaguely familiar with the band, largely because of Dave Navarro's RHCP connections, but never listened to an entire album before. Wasn't overly impressed tbh. I quite liked the music and instrumentation, I think it was the vocals I struggled with, and the slightly unremarkable songwriting. First half was better than the second half. 5.5/10

Fine album, but nothing too noteworthy throughout. Been Caught Stealing was the only song I knew going in and even that is just fine

Definitely grew on me and had some fun musical things going, especially Then She Did and Of Course. But the lyrics were a bit weird and their voices were pretty grating. 3+ stars, kinda forgettable

Sounds like a not awful Red Hot Chili Peppers. Quite liked it.

Great track in 'Been caught stealin', however, the rest of the album is fairly forgettable.

The music was pretty good but I think the mixing made the drums and vocals too loud. Also his voice & songwriting were pretty annoying and I generally just got bored during some of the longer songs.

who is jane

Alternative; not bad. Been Caught Stealing was the best song on the album. 6/10.

The White Stripes meets Sgt Pepper. Too punky for me but kinda fun, some dark carnival vibes

Not gabibo's addiction

Grungey 90s guitar hero/gta san andreas vibes

Not my favorite but competent.

pretty cool. I liked the vocals and the 10 min song. was a lil repetitive. the bush artwork <333.5

some of it quite cool

Three days' bass just crazy

Connor: I like the guitar work a lot, everything from the bass and rhythm guitar to the lead and solos. but the vocals lack something for me. Imogen is used to the vocals and really likes them, though

Kinda weird but still cool. There’s something about janes addiction that always grossed me out for some reason.

Classic 2.5 star album... not offensive but lacking anything special!

Not my jam.

Nothing shocking here folks.

Knew "Stop!" and "Been Caught Stealing" going in, but nothing else. Jane's Addiction has always been more of a miss for me among a lot of other bands coming up around the same time that I do enjoy. They kinda feel like they're taking the parts of 80s metal and RHCP that I don't really care for and mashing them together with Farrell's not great vocals into a weird rock variant that is just mostly boring. I do like the songs where they get a bit weirder, like on this album in "Of Course" but the rest of the album is pretty meh for me

not my style

Another album where I like the bands it inspired way more than I like the album. Was just holding onto 3 stars until the last two tracks.

My heart fell when I saw this on the list - that bloody dog sound haunted the kind of clubs I went to on constant replay and irritated me immeasurably. Anything that strays near metal-funk is never going to win my attention without boiling my blood. Certainly this is the first time I have listened to this whole album. I have to confess it was better than I expected but my expectations were pretty low. Largely pretty dull... and those bloody dogs!

Favorite track(s): Been Caught Stealing, Three Days

The better of the two JA albums, which isn't saying much tbh

Booooorrrribg

3.5/10 - I feel like I should feel neutral or positive about this album, but I just don’t. I didn’t know Been Caught Stealing was by JA but I generally turn it off when it comes on the radio. Just not a fan.

I don't really rock with this. I think the second half of the album had some interesting ideas/sounds but it's not anything I'll come back to. 4/10

Fine but not one I’ll return to.

Wasn't vibing with this one it has some good instrumental but overall dont rate it 4.1/10

Unfortunately this sounds like a Kyle Gordon album. Not my vibe

Not for me

I owned this CD when it came out, and in fact was one of the earlier CDs I owned. And I don't really remember why I owned it, perhaps a Columbia House pick. Stop is great. Been Caught Stealing was always kind of stupid to me. Three Days felt cool at the time. Now, I just can't suffer Perry Farrell because he is what you might call insufferable.

An album of two halves. The first half is fairly dull, based around simplistic metal riffs. From Three Days onwards there’s a lot more creativity to it. Not enough to revisit though.

The album offers typical late-’80s alternative rock. The most notable musicians involved are Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro. The musicianship is solid throughout, and the album was quite successful as well. However, this kind of music is no longer relevant to me personally.

Better in small doses, that whining wailing screeching voice is headache inducing

Review - I just don't like them man. They're ok. The guitar can be ok. I don't like the singer. I don't like the psychedelia. The song writings just not that good. Caught Stealing is ok but despite the singing. I thought Stop was ok but I just nostalgically remember it from GTA San Andreas, it's actually a terrible song. Mid album. There's better early 90s alt rock that needs listening to Score - 3.5/10 Need to listen? NO

The lead singer's voice is unpleasant to listen to. Musically quite proggy. Not my vibe.

Just kinda loud and drones on a bit, wasn’t much all that interesting here. The guy can’t really sing either 2

I went in with an open mind. The band rocks - bass and drums can lock into a nice groove but the songs are for the most part weak and Perry Farrell is not a singer. This was definitely a zeitgeist album - captured / set the mood at the time.

Perry says "daddy-o" in a song, so I cannot give this more than 2 stars

Strange one this. A lot of components that I should, and if I'm honest I think I did, like. Just something in the way its put together makes it not for me. Really hard to define why but I just don't like it. 2

there's like one song that i like in this album, and despite the consistent sound and merit that has this band, felt mostly boring. In some sense, it felt like something where everything sounds the same.

A few interesting moments, but overall not for me. Could definitely have died without listening to this.

2'5 yo creo

Overrated - Perry Farrell's appeal makes very little sense to my British ears - save for some fleeting nostalgia for Stop and Been Caught Stealing from video game soundtracks

singles that stand the test of time, but overall not my jam.

it was ok. i mean, the music was def good, i js feel like it was missin a certain feel or vibe or smth.. idk, i js wasnt rly feelin it.

90s experimental rock.

Maybe the most annoying vocals ever but the guitar player is great.

Not for me. It’s not bad but then neither is it good!

I get the appeal, but not my type of rock

wild, loud, fun

sad and tired

I didn’t expect to like this, and I was right. The only song I knew was “Been Caught Stealing”, which is about the only time my interest was peaked. Otherwise, my only other takeaway from this was that it went on too long. I didn’t actively hate it compared to albums I’ve given 1* to, but that’s not exactly a compliment - either way, it scrapes 2*.

Never really could figure out this band. But it was a fun throwback.

I liked it more than I thought I would, but I wouldn’t listen to it again

The slower tracks made this a little more listenable than the previous Jane's Addiction album I got, but I'll be honest this just really isn't my jam.

One great song

Three days was nice. Album overall was too punk for me.

🎧Butt rock

thought this would be Extremely My Shit judging by the cover but i really didn’t fw the vocals and couldn’t get into any of the songs

2.8 chance 3 en un buen día

Aw geez dood. Another metal album. I can tell that this is going to be a metal album because of the parental advisory sticker and the design of this album cover being in line with where rock album art was at during the time (i.e., it's hideous and would smell dingy if album covers had scents). I suspect there'll be some sacrilegious, provocative lyrics packed in here too, which is GAY. Anyways, on with the music. Alt rock, huh? I wasn't expecting that. This album is dragged down pretty far by the vocals. They seriously rub me the wrong way - the way they're mastered is very strange. They sound like they've been pitched-up and had all of their edges shaved off in post. A shame, as these vocals would otherwise pair nicely with the instrumentals - the songwriting is definitely there. The instrumentals are a lot better. Despite being of-the-time, the guitars have a grandiose, larger-than-life feel with a satisfying level of bite. The grungier sound isn't really in my sphere of interest, but there's definitely competent bits. I can appreciate the intricate, multilayered sound. There's definitely a lot more going on with these grungy tunes than what I traditionally associate with the genre. Overall, this was a tolerable listen, but the style isn't really for me. Book time. The band's best album. A few comparisons to Led Zeppelin. "Three Days" is the band's "Stairway to Heaven", apparently. "...their elegant, edgy epitaph." Wikipedia verifies that this album includes their best-known material, is considered an alternative rock classic, was generally well-received by critics and performed decently on the US charts in addition to having more modest success on the Australian, Canadian and UK charts. If this really is a classic in alternative rock, then I suppose I can let this one through. I cosign this inclusion.

I can't really explain why but I really can't with this band

Not my favorite alternative record it’s punk and it’s unique Ain’t no right starts with a minute long skit and that’s interesting but kinda sucks. This just feels so much like a product of its time and I think Jane addiction not that great. Probably won’t ever revisit but it had moments

Fine album, no real notes I guess. I wish the guy didn't sing I do not like his voice very much.

These guys are an acquired taste. Like it’s jammy but not hip jammy. There is a lot of bass leading tracks but it’s not Primus. There can be catchiness but there is also B side type shit. I don’t really know why this is on the list. It’s not groundbreaking and influential that I know of. It was a break from the grunge sound and the deep voice Scott Stapp trash. I will say that Been Caught Stealing is a generational song. That cannot be mistaken. But ya, other than that, mid album. Not really worthy on this list but it’s close I guess. Choice cut: Been Caught Stealing

Did not really interest me much at all. 2 stars or D+.

A little loud, but some good songs

Too Loud™️

Torn on this one. I learned guitar to this album a long time ago, and a few tracks really hold up. But, I just kept thinking that these are the dumbest guys. That’s fine on No One’s Leaving or Been Caught Stealing, but on 10 minute extended tracks, it’s wears a little thin.

I think that one track with the violin was pretty cool. The rest of the record is kinda just meh. Favourite Track(s): Of Course Least Favourite Track(s): No One's Leaving

I just feel like I'm watching Entourage

2.5 , but 5 for stealing .

Generic and simply uninteresting

You can tell a lot from an album cover. For example, this one tells me that this album is for edgy Gen X men and nobody else. And the music certainly reinforces that.

I know some people who are super into Jane's Addiction, so I thought I might be super into Jane's Addiction. Alas. It was not to be.

Favorite tracks: Stop!, Been Caught Stealing Overall, I continue to find Jane's Addiction more annoying than anything else

This was OK, but massively spoiled by Spotify's terrible performance.

I mean, I'm not a skater in late 80's Los Angeles, so i don't know if I'm the target audience for this, but it's not really doing it for me. I love Stop, mainly because of Guitar Hero, but the rest is just kinda mush to me - especially as I can't understand a words hes saying!

Yeah this is exactly the type of music I don’t like. I feel like I can see why it is good in comparison for the genre but otherwise not for me.

Grunge is generally pretty yawn inducing for me. There are only two bands associated with the genre I actually like and I’d argue both don’t really fit it (Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana). So anyway Jane’s Addiction try to make it sound funky and cool and it just makes it worse. I mean they’re kind of a well known band so maybe it’s not bad that you should listen to this but the music itself is pretty bad. Two stars?

Just ok

Its ok nothing special- generic american rock

Idk. This album was kinda meh for me. Like Guns And Roses I don't like the singer and Navarro didn't really impress me. I like most 90's stuff but this one didn't hit it.

Been Caught Stealing is a great song but I’m not an overall fan of theirs. A little harder than I usually like.

It was aight

Wanted to like it more than I did. A bit depressing for my taste.

The hits are always worth a listen, but overall the album just come over as a bit dated, too loud to be background music, too slow to keep my attention

Didn't really enjoy this. A bit too shouty.

Didn't enjoy it.

What is it about certain albums/ bands? On paper this should be one of my fav albums of all time. I was listening to this sort of stuff at the time and it SHOULD be my bag. But I didn’t like it at the time and I still don’t really like it now. And I can’t put My finger on why….? It’s not awful but I never choose to listen to it. Which says a lot.

I’ve always found this band to be annoying. I don’t know exactly why. Part of it is Perry Farrell’s voice but it’s not just that. I guess it’s just one of those things, not sure why but I am not a fan.

Really not a standout, in hindsight. “Stop” is probably the best song on the album.

It’s somewhat poisoned unfairly by the dreadful bands that were influenced by Jane’s Addiction. Been Caught Stealing is undeniably a classic, but still, I couldn’t get into this as an album at all. Will swear on Dave Navarro’s soul patch to try again in the future

Perry Ferrell sounds like a group of alley cats in heat.

I can’t believe this came out in 1990 I was listening to this with my mom in 97

Ritual De Lo Habitual is far from bad. I think you could even say it's good with the solid instrumentation Jane's Addiction provides. But I listened to this album 3 or 4 times, and I can't find much to say. The album truly isn't bad but is instead bland. Maybe it was the vocals that turned me off. The coolest part is leaning into the Spanish angle, but that's all I've got.

I like the musicality and sound mixing of the album -- the instruments all sound super clean and it has a deep sound. That said, some of the songs were immediately annoying just with the way they started. I also am undecided on the singer's voice. It's very much of a kind with Motley. Works for some of the songs, grates for others. Overall, it's aight -- probably would listen to a few select songs again, but not sure I got the same buzz as the folks who said this album was a must-listen. Honestly, I'd probably really like an instrumental version of this album.

Yes, I know this album is loved by many, but I really don't like this style of music. Is it a California thing? I find his voice incredibly grating, and I knew it was going to be a hard listen from the minute I started playing this album. I remember Been Caught Stealing from the days I used to DJ and people used to request it and then lose their shit the second the dog barking started (sigh!) Three days and of course where ok until he sang, but I ended up with no notable songs and felt like it was border line bearable to listen to. 2 stars (possibly 1.5)

H: no song needs to be 10 mins. 2/10 H fav song: Stop Z: what started as a punk/post punk party quickly transitioned into a drawn out progressive punk experience that was loud and repetitive. I can see the influence of the lead singer to the hard core punk bands (turnstile), and the strings on Of Course was a unique touch but otherwise you won’t find me listening to this again. 4.5/10 Z fav song: Stop

Vermoeiend. Ik kom niet hoger dan 2 sterren.

ok. all over. different.

Not for me. Kinda corny

Э? Then She Did...

Overrated

This was really boring, the songs were too long, and I didn't vibe

I'm just not a fan. I like music that makes be glad I'm listening, this stuff just kinda makes me regret it.

I reached a point after experiencing this album several times that, every time I hear the singer try and reach very high notes, I imagine himself squeezing his testicles. I'm sorry for anyone who had to read that. I understand if you feel disgusted. I'm just trying to express how forced this mans singing is. It might be fun in the first couple of listens, but it gets incredible tedious after that. So, the voice is annoying. The rest? Is just alternative rock music and I'm not crazy about it. The production is super clean, but there the instrumentation doesn't do anything for me, except for the bass, which is kind of funky and energetic. And to make things worse, the tracks from the second half are all super long and tedious. Regardless of all the negatives, I think I have way worse experiences.

I didn't enjoy the first couple of tracks at all, but it then seemed to get better slowly. It peaked with 'Been Caught Stealing', that was a great track, but then spiraled downwards after that. I thought that maybe I'd misjudged the first few tracks and should listen to them again, which I did. No, I was right first time, they were poor. It really isn't something I'd consciously search out to listen to again, nor does it give me a desire to listen to any other material by this band, or it's members. It's 2 stars from me.

I found this a remarkably dull album.

Idk just something really didn’t click

Perry Farrell sucks, dude. The music is pretty great but his constant yelping and whining kills the entire experience. "Then She Did" was my favorite track

Not really a Janes Addiction fan, just a 2 for me.

I said goddamn it’s generic ain’t it

No. One was enough. His singing stresses me out.

Fine enough, singer kind of annoyed me.

Don't care for it. It's very technical, but also very shallow on a first listen.

sounds ok , not my style of listening

I’m not sure if it’s Jane’s addiction or just this album, but either way this album distills everything I hate about the Red Hot Chili Peppers into its most concentrated form. So by definition, I hate it.

Meh didn't really listen

Pretty mid, wasn't anything special. The memes about this band having the fight on stage were legendary, only special thing about them?

Jane's Addiction and ZZ Top sound like what an alt rocker cholo would listen to in the back of his dad's impala lowrider in south LA. This album contains the only song I've ever known by Jane's Addiction (Been Caught Stealing). A song I generally hated as a child but came around on. Other songs in that category include I'm Blue, and Call On Me by Eric Prydz. Not a good look. I'll save myself from repeating my last Jane's Addiction review, but the lead singer sounds like he belongs in an early 2000's pop punk band like All American Rejects. His voice does not mesh with the rock whatsoever, of which the instrumentals aren't half bad - there's some good solos on here, especially Three Days. Anyways, this shit sucks. It's not nearly as bad Nothing's Shocking - which indeed was Shocking in how bad it was.

White noise. Could not differentiate the different tracks on this album and if you told me to name ONE I would struggle.

I did not know James addiction was Latino. Interesting! First song is very cool and catchy. Third song in and I am not totally feeling the sound or the vibe. Will continue to see if that changes I am not crazy about this guy’s voice I couldn’t listen to the whole thing. I had to change it

This was a slightly weird album, which we should've expected from the album artwork. Overall, nothing too exciting but there were little bits here and there, where it sounded quite nice, so overall meh is what I can say. It was decent just playing it in the background while doing other things, but I think it would be a bit too much if I were to sit down and focus on listening to the whole album.

Or ordentliches Gejaule an der Grenze zur Musikalität

I just can't deal with vocals.

I understand that this is a very talented band musically. I will just never enjoy Perry Farrell's nasally voice. I liked the dogs on Been Caught Stealing and the bass line in Three Days. Beyond that, things I liked about this album were few and far between. Rough patch of Blur-Metallica-Laura Nyro and now Jane's Addiction, 6 stars in 4 days. Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

Never been a huge fan, but sometimes this music just hits hard. Today is a good day for this. I think my biggest roadblock with diving into this band is perry ferrels voice, but at the same time its a perfect voice. It matches the lyrics so well. Its a conundrum.

Didn’t love it

Been Caught Stealing is a song everyone knows -- upbeat and catchy and you kind of can't help but dance to it. Overall I don't love this album or band - it definitely feels dated.

This was whatever. Definitely preferred the longer and slower songs then the fast paced ones

I like Been Caught Stealing, but I've never listened to much Jane's Addiction before. Trying to listen to the whole album, the thing that strikes me is how difficult it is to get through that much of Perry Farrell's voice. It's incredibly grating. The only other song I vaguely enjoyed on this album was Then She Did, the song with the lowest ratio of Farrell to instrumental. Mostly I found myself wanting this to stop. I'm giving this album a two because of 1) Been Caught Stealing and 2) Only one song genuinely annoyed me, Of Course, where Farrell sings about "It being like slapping yourself in the faaaaaace" Which is what a lot of this album felt like.

Didn't do too much for me. Most of the songs just kind of blended together. Quite forgettable.

An album to which I was somewhat indifferent, nothing really stood out as being particularly noteworthy. Uncertain on what the point of this album is.

Fav: Been Caught Stealing Least Fav: Of Course Think the name of the album is better than any of the songs

- a lot of this album feels like losing it a bit to me, which is cool to evoke but not necessarily an enjoyable experience. some thoughts: - i’m not feeling particularly compelled - FF: Navarro was a part of the chili peppers for about 4 years! - “slapping yourself in the face” over and over is quite an experience - i liked the start of three days, and the guitar in classic girl - i think i’m just not a huge fan of his voice
