Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Soulful easy listening. I’ll be adding to my library for further listening. Although worth noting that Respect has weird undertones when sung from a male perspective. Hard to get past. Best tracks: My Girl, Rock Me Baby, Satisfaction.
I didn't realise it was an album of covers. Saying that, I generally enjoy the spin he puts on the tracks, and they are played sublimely. A Change is Gonna Come, Wonderful World, and Rock Me Baby were the most enjoyable. -1 for not being original.
Wonderful World My Girl I‘ ve been lovin you Und… I can get no satifaction
Imagine an Otis Readding album. Now play this album. You will not be surprised at what you hear. Which is ok but unexceptional.
Definitely not a bad album, I think I was just not in the right mood for this one. I wasn't feeling soulful at the time and I just couldn't get into the music.
Man idk it was good
vibra 70's me gusto
Great music for a film's soundtrack.
Classic soul, mindblowing that respect is an otis redding original but arethra definitely does it better
6.5/10 Highlights: A Change is Gonna Come Respect Satisfaction
2.5
Album 241 of 1001 Otis Redding - Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul Rating : 3 / 5 Great listen. Not so much of an "album" as just a gathering of great songs. Some good covers here.
Não é meu estilo mas é legal. Já conhecia algumas e reconheci vários samples
fairly boring soul instrumental with some extremely impressive vocals. very outdated lyrics occasionally also don't end every line with 'now' please favourite song: '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction Rolling Stones cover
Lots of classics and standards that would be covered in the future. Pre-dated the album era, however, and seems like more a collection of songs than a cohesive vision as a result.
Covers of songs that weren’t as great as the originals
Góð lög og vel flutt, en flest eiga betri útgáfur (My girl, Satisfaction, Respect, Wonderful world). Að auki er smá dósahljóð í þessari production. Redding er flottur, en ...
A very ronseal album
Undeniably great voice, but maybe trying to do too much. I’d rather listen to the original version of a song like My Girl because the vocals are a lot more consistent. Satisfaction was great though.
Solid.
actually familiar with a lot of these songs love the instrumentals (sax n all that) would definitely listen again kinda romantic and joyful
Otis!!
Pretty nice.
Decent cover album My Girl has trancended it's original version, but most songs don't eclipse the original Also interesting to hear Respect as Aretha Franklin heard it too
B Ole Man Trouble 4 Respect 3 Change Gonna Come 4 Down in the Valley 3 I've Been Loving You Too Long 4 Shake 3 My Girl 3 Wonderful World 4 Rock Me Baby 3 Satisfaction 3 You Don't Miss Your Water 4 I'm gonna take one out of untitled2's book and leave the people with a single weblink: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB7P7OqCpqo
Not bad.
Pretty good
Got that jazzy feel with lots of piano complimented with the lead guitar and an awesome voice
It was fine. You've heard one song, you heard them all.
Classic, feels like James Brown. good to work to, but felt like the songs could go for 15 minutes and instead weee cut short
Don’t hate it, don’t love it. Ray lamontagne was definitely influenced by this artist.
Amazing, but boring to me personally.
I love Otis but don't love this album top to bottom. His cover of "My Girl" is unconvincing, and he messes up some of Smokey Robinson's ingenious lyrics! I also don't think the "Satisfaction" works. "Rock Me Baby" is blues, not soul! What happened to truth in advertising? At the top of the heap here are "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and "You Don't Miss Your Water," which are maximum Otis. I know this is considered a classic but I'd prefer a compilation that included half of this album, plus "Try a Little Tenderness" and some of the big, later hits.
An album of mostly covers of other artist's songs. It's OK, but not great.
BIG OTIS MY MAN Man puts the would into soul music, banger after banger only thing to improve would be get sitting on the dock in there as well from his other album, banger Brilliant chill music, gotta love 'my girl' always been a fav of mine
Great album and the covers on the album were brilliant.
I have always enjoyed Otis Reddings music and while he sounded as good as always on this recording I did not find the collection of these particular songs to be particularly compelling.
sielua nähykkään... kysy saatanalta saatana vastaa: njoo mulla se on...pilkkahintaan sai myös heh.. minä vastaan:, dont dance with the mf saatana or perkele (saatana son) brother... advice to youngsters out there.. itse menisin mielummin helvettiin kun kuuntelisin tätä (heh hyvä albumi, parhaillaan huono mieliala, objctiv reveiw) täyttä vitun paskaa paskakontentti tässä on lähestulkoon täydellinen -1 biisi... a change is
Great sound and voice, liked the song about how much he likes water at the end. Classic, but also not totally for me.
The guy sure loves his trumpets. This album had me vibing on my couch, at times swinging along, especially Satisfaction really pumps energy. The band is having a good time! The album didn't really connect with me emotionally, though. It feels like it's just a bunch of technically well-executed songs in soul style, while it misses an actual Soul. Even Respect, which is his own song, was given much more emotion by Aretha Franklin. Otis was clearly a very talented musician, he's adding tonnes of flair on every line, but it feels like an empty husk to me, sadly.
Classic soul
Da e kje så dumt
Soulful covers, not bad for shagging maybe 3/5
Particularly liked "Ole Man Trouble" and "Satisfaction"
I’m usually not much of a fan of soul, but I can’t deny the quality of music and the emotion captured in this album.
It's Otis Redding, so what's not to like?! It's neat to hear his take on the cover songs, but I still prefer the originals. It's also fascinating to learn that his version of Respect came before Aretha Franklin's version. There's some interesting commentary about that song's history and development that I never otherwise would have been aware of.
Props to Otis for inspiring so many covers, although I generally liked the covers better than the originals. Still solid.
25 seconds into I'VE BEEN LOVING YOU TOO LONG when Redding slides between the two notes in the word time feels like when love is driving you back to her and it needs to gun the engine to get through a light because it cannot be apart any longer. Mmmm. My issue with the album is how disjointed it all is when considering it is 'an album'. It feels like an other-artists greatest hits record, which is fine, but considering the source of this site feels like a disqualification. But they didn't ask me. Redding in unquestionably a revelatory performer, so I am conflicted.
Lovely voice but difficult to rate this one as most of the songs are covers, not originals
The man can sing awesome, but blues was not the mood i was in when i listened this album.
"Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul" by Otis Redding is a classic soul album that showcases his exceptional vocal prowess. Released in 1965, it's a collection of covers and original songs, performed with unparalleled passion and emotion. Tracks like "Respect" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long" are standout moments, with Redding's raw, soulful delivery leaving an indelible mark on the genre. The album's production, led by Steve Cropper, is tight and soulful, featuring the exemplary Stax Records house band. However, while "Otis Blue" is undoubtedly a masterpiece, it leans heavily on cover songs, which might disappoint those seeking more original material. Additionally, some listeners might prefer Redding's more raw and unfiltered live recordings. In summary, "Otis Blue" is a quintessential soul album that deserves recognition for its impact on the genre, but its reliance on covers and comparisons to Redding's live performances warrant a 3/5 rating.
A couple gems, but odd mix of fast & slow songs. 7/10
Expressive/emotional vocals. Not a higher rating due to it being mainly covers.
What a great voice for soul! I enjoyed hearing his versions of these songs. I had never heard them before.
This was pretty good, but after hearing a lot of familiar songs thinking "was this really made by Otis Redding?" I googled the album and realized that 90% of it are covers. I honestly think that kind of makes it ineligible for a rating, and that it shouldn't be on this list at all. I guess all I can do is rate his performance then, so I'll do that, even though it feels unfair towards other albums that might've gotten a lower rating. A fun fact is that it's apparently unknown who the girl on the album cover is. The art somehow also feels before its time and looks like something a bit mysterious that could've popped up during the 90s.
Sweet old soul for the soul, but not ad timeless as I was hoping for
La définition du soul. La voix me fait penbsre un peu à Stevie Boy, mais ça vient moins me chercher. Une belle reprise de Satisfaction.
Das wird bestimmt gut
pretty much what you expect it to be. enjoyable listen though!
All kinda blurred together
It's nice. Pretty easy to listen to. Good voice.
Me gustó.
Historian koskettavimman laulajan yliarvostetuin levy. Kuunneltavissa milloin vain, totta kai, mutta kannustaa jatkuvan keskittymisen sijasta valikointiin - Respect (pysäyttävästi alkuperäinen), My Girl (pysäyttävästi lainattu)... Ja olen kunnon kansalaisena valmis muuttamaan mielipidettäni.
6/10
Otis Redding always delivers but this record didn't wow me as some of his have.
I did not know Otis Redding wrote Respect until today. Cool. Overall decent with some hits and misses. Liked Satisfaction and Rock Me Baby. Didn't care for My Girl. (Temptations version is better) Great voice.
I really enjoyed his covers and his originals I think he did a really good job and his voice and music was good. It wasn’t incredibly amazing because it isn’t my exact type of music but if it were it’d be really good.
Otis Redding's voice is effortless and exudes joy in what he's doing. A fun album of covers
Tof cover-album, meer niet
This is okay but I don't really get caught by it
A good cover filled soul album that kind of blows my mind that it came out at the time when bands like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were really beginning to hit their stride. Otis' voice, gritty, rich and most importantly sounds very much alive, is one that anyone couldn't complain about. Best: My Girl Worst: Rock Me Baby
Nice soulful album, easy listen.
I have a split opinion on Otis, at odds with my love of the soul greats, and this album sums it up. When he's good he's amazing, like on the opening track, Ole Man Trouble, Dead in the Valley and I've been loving you to long. But at other times he claws on me, the soul equivalent of Christina Aguilera, all growls and runs that ignore the song itself. I HATE his versions of A change is gonna come and Wonderful world. I don't enjoy Respect, but in its itself its a good version, it's just not Aretha's empowering anthem. Even taking that out of it, Otis' version doesn't come close to Aretha's. How can I love the soul greats and be critical of Otis Redding? Because I do and I do.
Some good classics, long album.
nice style, some very good songs
2.5
I liked it
His voice is grittier and more guttural than other soul singers of his generation, and the authenticity/sincerity is off the charts. One likes many of his versions of these songs better than the original (or better known) versions, but a few are hard to appreciate because they sound like further exploitation of already polluted songs; if only OR's "Satisfaction" sold more than Mick and Keef's. "You Don't Miss Your Water" is a fine closer.
- Such positive vibes - I dig the soul covers of some famous songs like My Girl - Unbelievable voice
Good style, easy listening
Some real classics on this album. Tho some of them better by other voices (Respect, Wonderful world) . Otis voice better with the slower stuff e.g. sitting on the Dock of the bay which isn't on this album
it was ok. I like that he named the album Otis Blue
This is that guy that was sampled on that "Watch the Throne" song. This has the OG R E S P C T song; it's not 1 to 1 with the Jackson 5 song, but I can tell they took some inspiration from this song. This is soul music through and through. It's pretty good too. I wouldn't have this as a 4, but it is a strong 3 definitely. It is very apparent that this is a super influential album because at least 3 or 4 tracks have elements or snippets I have heard other artists use, and that's not even as samples they just copied or were heavily inspired by the sound/lyrics.
A good album of Otis Redding singing some classic songs. I’d say this would be more impressive if the songs were originals but it’s mainly covers of the best motown and blues songs. Otis has an astounding voice and was able to make each of these songs really entertaining on his own. Overall it’s good but lacks originality. 7.1/10
Good, but not quite great. He has an astounding voice, and has picked some good songs to sing (other than the rubbish cover of the Stones' 'Satisfaction') but it's just missing a bit of emotion at points. I really enjoyed it, but didn't love it.
A well done set of classics by a legend. Not groundbreaking, but it is genre defining. Enjoyable listen
I didn’t enjoy this as much as I assumed I would. The recording is a little dated. But it’s still Otis Redding’s awesome voice.
Here's a cool one! Otis Redding covering a bunch of "soul" songs, some of which are just rock and roll tracks that we know well. But he does hit some big soul staples like "Respect" and "Change Gonna Come," one of my all-time favorites. Reminder: we had only one album from Sam Cooke, a live album, and it pre-dated "A Change is Gonna Come," his best song and (in my view) one of the greatest songs ever. Anyway, great job Otis, he added a great personal flair to these hits. Nothing too spectacular, but a really good album. Favorite tracks: Ole Man Trouble, Change Gonna Come, Rock Me Baby. Album art: It's just a white woman, not sure why. Is this how the ladies are supposed to look or react when they hear the album? 3.5/5
Enjoyed. Wouldn’t listen again. Appreciate the genre but it isn’t my vibe.
I’m not typically someone really into soul, but this was a nice listen. The covers were strongest, though Respect was an excellent song written by Redding himself. Best tracks: Respect (Aretha did it better but this original version is still good), My Girl (one of my favourite songs ever), Rock Me Baby (honestly sounds like an early prototype of what would later become a Led Zeppelin song, I loved the guitar on it) Worst track: Wonderful World, Satisfaction (his cover fell flat for me, the Rolling Stones original is much better)
Quite an excellent voice but good lord I cannot handle the sheer volume of horns
Good album, been in my collection a while
Good material that I didn't mind listening to once, but an album of cover songs doesn't begin to make up for a career that didn't get to happen.
Super chill album, my favorite is A Change Is Gonna Come
There’s some hits on here but idk if they’re covers or covered
Redding's choices for what to sing seemed... strange. I don't know if he decided what to cover, or if it was the record company, but I just can't imagine anyone saying "yeah, let me take a whack at covering 'Respect'." It's such an iconic song. The result wasn't good or bad, I'm going to say it was... different. My feelings about covers: if you do it note for note, there wasn't a point in doing it. People could just listen to the original. So you better put in something that makes it different. And the brass band, well they sure did do that. "Satisfaction?" I didn't hate it. I mean, I like the Devo cover of "Satisfaction," so I can't fault someone for trying to do something different on that piece. "Wonderful World" was ok too, although the Mrs. didn't like it as much. So the point is that the covers, although they seemed odd, were very scattershot and hit and miss for me. So I can't say this was a total success, it did put a few of the songs in a different light for me.
Classic soul from a great Singer, but quite dated
Otis Redding as his best. Warm Voice, classical Soul, really good and nice music. No worldwide no.1 hit single here, but deeply satisfying songs. Unfortunately, recording quality could (even in 1965) have been better.
"I don't know much about history". Bäst: Wonderful World
It's a really nice album, but it's mostly cover versions so I struggle to give it a super high score. His voice is wonderful, he's singing classics, but there's a couple of bits that don't do it for me (not convinced that Satisfaction works in this style, and Respect sung by anyone other than Aretha sounds weird now!). 3/5.
Best Song: My Girl. The most soulful of the songs on offer here. Worst Song: Respect. Not terrible, but just an example of when a different version of the song is so excellent that it eclipses all other attempts. Overall: I wish these renditions of these songs skewed more towards the "soul" side of the spectrum (and less on the rock & roll), but there's no denying Otis Redding's voice.
yass jazz
*I’ll come back to this in the future because I just don’t have time for a 2 hour album at the moment* so I’m gonna listen to Otis’ album ‘The Dock Of The Bay’* Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yes, it’s exactly what I imagine when people say they like music of the 60/70’s, full of charm and soul, brilliant backing and vocals to every track Favourite song: Track 11 - Old Man Trouble (near enough every song on her I like)
I appreciate how influential this album must've been, but also don't really care about any of its songs, today.
Otis Reading doing covers - what's not to like!
i mean he’s great but i can’t really say a ton of good things about an album of covers when all of the originals are better
Good when it’s good, voice is incredible. Monotonous listening straight through.
All the original versions of these are way better. This is far less than Otis was capable of
Though I love Otis's voice I cant help but feel a bit uninspired with "Otis goes to karaoke" What this album inspires me to do is listen to the originals as they are much better favourite track You don't miss your water.
Nice to find out where the popular song My Girl comes from. I have this weird feeling about (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction where I don't really dig it but this version is p good and I think I don't hate it anymore. Classic album
Pretty good ok
Some jams
Someone needs to sleep with him so he stops being horny on main
chill vibes ik for mig tho
Fine album but didn't wow me
It was mostly a great time but there was a lack of original tunes and a couple of the songs had funny production, also it was pretty short which was even more of an issue for the lack of original songs. I wanted to love this one but there were issues. A decent record.
Beautiful voice and full of classics but I am more into wilder music
Niet veel over te zeggen
too much brass for me like the album art covered many, many times good to listen to when people are over as it is chill would be good for a movie scene if yur that kind of guy like the piano arpeggios(?) favorite: a change is gonna come fuck you: rock me baby
Otis has such a distinctive voice. Change Is Gonna Come is a beautiful song. A lot of covers though, not too many original songs.
this music had me continuously picturing a montage in a movie of a busy city around christmastime. I like it at first, but then by the fourth song it got pretty annoying. I think I would like it better in small doses.
Classic songs and good voice but I prefer the originals
Bon album.
Overall a good album, definitely some bangers in there. Did not know the artist before but might listen to more of their songs. Still, there was nothing too memorable except for the cover of Satisfaction.
a bunch of covers and songs that aren't hits
3.5
Lekker, zo in de ochtend.
Otis! Mooi hoor
Best gezellig en veel herkenbaars
Lekker album!
ok...
Classic
Didn’t listen to the whole thing but a nice vibe. Would put on in the background
Bueno
A solid collection of well-orchestrated covers that Redding absolutely nails the delivery on. This isn't my preferred genre and the LP isn't mind-bending, but still a well-executed and enjoyable listen that I wouldn't mind revisiting.
Vaikka kaikki on kohdallaan jääkö silti jotain puuttumaan? Okei toi lopun rollariveto on ihan älyttömän vahva! 3/5
Odotin hieman enemmän. Laatua toki.
Some nice soul, almost a 4/5 in terms of enjoyment. But even though they're good covers, a whole album of covers seems a bit lazy
He certainly has a way to make all these tracks sound like his own. Fave: My Girl
I know I should be rating higher but honestly I've got a bit sick of the old blues and soul singers.
Love Otis. Think the song choices here are good, just for the most part I appreciate the versions I'm more familiar with. I like the three Cooke choices, but it's really hard to top the king, yeah? Meanwhile, on the Rolling Stones choice, I love the energy and the passion thrown behind the song. Think it tops their version. Favorite tracks: "Satisfaction", "I've Been Loving You Too Long"
Classic 60s soul. Mixed bag, some tracks are quite nice, some not so much. Listening to Respect from the (original) mal perspective is very strange for modern ears; I for one found the track unlistenable. The Stones Cover of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction doesn't sound too good either. 2.5/5
Smooooooooooth. (Ignore the expanded edition.)
Yea it's fine, easy listening.
Another classic. Some different versions of songs - funny how we prefer the version we first here mostly. Or I do anyway.
A (largely) covers album makes it feel closer to a greatest hits, is this cheating when compared to most of this list. That said Otis makes many of these tunes his own. The power of his voice and interpretation is excellent. I think the inclusion of Satisfaction was a mistake. Cover art 1/5
This was an alright album. The style of music was pretty solid but I feel like having cover songs on an album is a bit disappointing. Will probably listen again.
Good stuff but better stuff after album continuous play on Pandora
Fine album, mostly covers. Otis sings his heart out, but I find myself still largely preferring the originals of these songs.
It looks a bit like Dusty on the cover. I didn't realize Otis Redding wrote RESPECT. I like it and the other self-penned tunes though I'm not a fan of doing Rolling Stones covers. The mid-sixties production is a bit tinny.
I was a bit put off to learn that Otis only penned 3 out of the eleven songs so this is basically a cover album. He does a credible job covering them though and puts a nice spin on most of them. And today I learned that he wrote Respect. Aretha so totally owns that song that like many others I thought it was her baby. Go figure. This is a good album though.
Blues rock sesentero. Con canciones que perduran en el tiempo. Voz muy personal.
Ok . Great voice just felt it was missing something
A feel-good record, perfect for nostalgia shots and a good vibe overall, Otis voice is remarkable.
He's talented but it all sounds the SAME. Like, same chord patterns and everything. I feel the soul but the creativity isn't there.
Jämäkkä levy josta tuli hyvälle mielelle.
Jeekkiskamaa
Some great covers
Very good Soul album from long ago. I forgot how good his version of Satisfaction was. I've Been Lovin You too Long is one of his greatest! 3/5.
Do not judge a book - or an album - by its cover. Of course this is still true when taken literally. But still, covers gives the consumer - especially the ones who haven't heard of it before - and idea of what's to expect. Let's have a real life example: Say a guy discovered a music album, it's cover a blonde woman smiling with her eyes closed. Above it, in a solid font read "OTIS BLUE/OTIS REDDING SINGS SOUL". Otis? What an odd name. The guy thought as he began listening to the album. A raspy, energetic, and most notably, male, voice erupted as soon as he pressed play. The man was shocked. Is Otis a woman who sounds like a man? Of course not. Otis Redding is a dude, and the guy who is listening is bamboozled. And who is that woman on the cover? As far as he know, it was a freaking stock photo. And the music of "OTIS BLUE/OTIS REDDING SINGS SOUL"? It's pretty decent. It's mostly generic soul or R&B. Half of the album is a bunch of covers of some rock and blues songs.
what is this
Pleasant, easy listening
Immediately recognizable as some prominent covers - of Otis Redding. 'Satisfaction' by Devo and 'Respect' by Aretha Franklin, both weird hearing the originals. Also I couldn't help but hear Stevie Ray Vaughan with the searing southern blues guitar. Just imagine if they had not both met an untimely aerial end OR and RSV would have made a GA and TX fusion that was off the charts.
Nice listen, starts strong. Good relaxing songs, go well together.
Carino. Niente di trascendentale
6/10
Another “I enjoy the learning more than the album”. Good soul, but I learned that Redding wrote “Respect”. Decent Stones cover.
I try to consider the albums as a body of work, so while Otis Redding is an incredible artist and I enjoyed the individual songs, the album as a whole didn't work for me.
I like a lot of Otis stuff, so him singing the classics is always enjoyable
October 18, 2021 Actually pretty good despite not being a typical listen for me!
Mijn favorieten zijn toch wel de bekende deuntjes "Wonderful World", "(I can't get no) Satisfaction" en "Respect". Heel leuke uitvoeringen! ***
RESPECT to this album
It's Soul. As always great when I start listing to it but then gets a bit much. But that's on me and not Otis.
Good standard Otis...3.7
3 stars. Good music, but soul is just not my style
Solid but not sensational.
Very nice, Classic songs.
Didn't like as much as i though i would
Bra Otis! Bäst: "A change is gonna come"
Pretty good.
Fantastic album if you enjoy this kind of music. It appears the recording quality is mediocre even though it was recorded at Staxx in Nashville!?
Some great songs on this one. Lovely vocal delivery, too. Solid album.
In Conclusione: Tralasciando "I've been loving you too long" e "My girl" che sono molto famose il resto non l'avevo mai sentito.
Alright.
Bom. My Girl e Wonderful World são as melhores. Tem uma versão de (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction divertida.
Great songs
Inferior versions of 'Respect' and ' My Girl'. This album feels like it's trying too hard to be soulful... whatever that even means.
Great voice and band, song choices a bit of a mish mash here though
Ok album, some good songs on it. Not my cup of tea though.
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Ole Man Trouble, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Not a very big R&B fan, but his voice is incredibly expressive and he makes these songs his own. I had to look up whether the Rolling Stones actually wrote Satisfaction cus it sounds so natural coming from him.
Great, it’s a classic. We listened while we read and enjoyed it. ***
Some good stuff in there, though not his best work IMHO.
Cracking soul voice. Nice to know all the songs, but in essence an album of covers.
Solid covers album
"You were tired and you want to be free My love is growing stronger, as you become a habit to me" (I've Been Loving You Too Long) "Shake it like a bowl of soup" (Shake) Aquí estoy, empezando la mañana con un bailecito.
Good album, very well-rounded. You could be listening to it all day long to keep the good vibe going.
Schon nett
Best track - Ole Man Trouble Nice album, nothing particularly stand out.
Wieder einige bekannte songs. Rolling stones etc Zu viel blasmusik
Soul.
Pretty good. Still prefer the "original" versions for most of the songs. 5-6/10
I dig it. It’s fun to hear some classics through his voice.
Suave.
Good old Soul
This is how you do covers. Great vibes. 3.5
This is the small band type of blues music with a few classic songs.
Ok music. 3.5 stars
Some really classic tunes on here, I can't see myself consistently listening but it was good stuff. I think it's worth the three stars for My Girl, Wonderful World, Satisfaction, and Respect.
Pretty long album, mellow chill music
Good album of own and cover songs but nothing remarkable or outstanding so a solid 3
it sounds nice but it’s not something i'd personally put on a lot necessarily
Great soul record.
3-
satisfaction is kinda cool in this style
Yeah, this was ok. Otis sings the hits.
i kinda didn't like this one, preferred the original versions of a lot of these covers. I dont like this kind of vocal delivery
Meh, normal.
198. ok
Good vocals. Not really my vibe.
blues again but bearable
Old timer. Recognised a couple of songs. Favourite = Respect
40 songs everything sounds the same
Would definitely be in the 1000 nice albums to listen to. I imagine it would be great sunny Sunday morning cleaning music.
..
Hearing the white, English rock sound of Satisfaction translated back into the black, American R 'n' B sound that undoubtedly inspired it kind of leaves a strange taste in the mouth. As impeccably and stylishly delivered as it is, it simply can't quite deliver the angsty thrills of the original Stones recording. And therein lies my problem. Redding's voice and the Stax crew backing him are sublime throughout, rightfully earning this collection's inclusion in "best of" lists for decades later. These are definitive versions of the songs that you have heard X Factor contestants murdering for years now, but - and for me it is a big but - almost all of the material itself has not really aged well. Motown were doing something far more unique, inventive and enduring with their productions and arrangements. This is an important album for all of the reasons mentioned above, but to be absolutely honest, I'm kind of dull to its charms. It's a great voice with a great backing band, but it lacks that overall auteur vision at it's core.
And yet again, an album with little variation in between the tracks, and nothing really stands out. Yet not terrible. 2/5
I didn’t love this. I thought the covers didn’t stand up to the originals and Respect definitely feels different coming from a man.
Great singer, and sixties soul and reggae was much better than the white sixties pop. But it’s better as singles. Over an album, it’s all too samey.
I went into this album expecting a lot after hearing so much love for it, and I just don't really get it. It's not bad, but the whole album is really just covers, and there are better versions of so many of these songs - often the originals are much better, so I think a lot of this album just feels somewhat disappointing.
I thought it was okay
meh
I liked the music, not so much the singing. Very strange, as I should like this kind of music. I know that Redding is a giant of the genre, but his voice sounded a bit too acute and crisp to me. Could have been the remastered version that I found online. I think I'll return to this; maybe I will search for a better copy. 2.75 / 5 for now
It's OK, not a go to genre for me, but I get why people like this. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Some of it Revisit ❌️ Default ★★☆☆☆ (4/10) Total reviewed : 272 Already owned : 62 Purchased : 15 To buy : 1 Nope : 194
Pop soul covers. Guess it's representative of the genre but the songs aren't that similar or as good as Dock of the Bay which I like.
Thank god 'Dock of the Bay' isn't on this. That song really grates for some reason. I like the Sam Cooke numbers, especially 'Change is Gonna Come' but overall this album is too long and repetitive.
Great song sung by a good singer, production could have been better though
7.5/10 me gustó solo un tema "a change Is gonna come" muy bueno
The most overrated album of all time. It’s one of Redding’s worst albums and for some reason he does too many Sam Cooke covers that just don’t do the original versions justice. Why is this here?
Didn’t like this album at all. Soul and me never get on. But like other albums on the list made by musical icons like Otis Redding I do bow down to their regality and standing in the musical world. Always up for sitting on a dock of the bay but unfortunately my musical accompaniment wouldn’t be this album. 2/5 28/2/26
I also liked it, but unsure when I would listen to Saved the song: Respect Learned that "You Don't Miss Your Water" is a popular song title.
This is #day559 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… ah, back to oldies, right? I see where it's coming from, and all that, but it just happens to be that I'm not a huge soul person. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day 560.
Fantastic vocalist. Album was a bit long though, and not really my style
Fine but not for me
I didn't really enjoy it as much.
idk man
I listened to this album until I could listen to no more, which turned out to be about 10 minutes. The trumpet was cool but it just all sounded the same to me and I found myself wondering when each song was going to end only to realize another had already begun. I could not finish the album
au shemeshvit erti xutjer movusmine da mkidia
this album essentially has otis redding covering existing songs with his own flair. it works for some, and others miss. its fine - i wouldnt listen again. the production and arrengments are a fun time. 5/10
Soul is not my thing. This album has some moments that are a bit more energetic, but it’s still soul. I don’t like the atmosphere, and I find the singing and instrumentation quite underwhelming. Don’t like it, and I don’t see myself ever getting into it. 5/10
A blues cover album? Maybe if I liked the blues more. The originals were better
It's was okay. Just a bunch of covers. Not sure how a cover album can be considered for this list. I don't know. Just fine I suppose.
Day 153 Wonderful voice but of the songs on here I already knew, I mainly prefer the originals Highlights Wonderful World You don’t miss you water
Not an Otis kinda day
Slow, and the guys singing is just not it and he seems to like making moans and grunts at me, Id only like that if it was anyone else or maybe initials R and H and K and L I like that xxx.
Maybe end of year fatigue but wasn’t really interested in this one and don’t see myself coming back for another listen. 2/5
Not my type of music.
not a bad album, just not my thing.
tykkäsin ekasta
Boy does he sing them blues
I mean, nice voice I guess, but everything is so tepid? No idea why this record is in the list.
Bezvezan album covera, a inače ga volim. 2/5, 4/10
This is a weird album in that it just feels like a bucket of songs with no structure. Incredible voice, let down by a flat sounding and sometimes (ironically) soulless accompaniment.
Sorry for the ignorance but it sounds like generic soul to me
At least it was short
nice enough, great voice and good versions of some classic songs.
Nice change from our rough patch of 1960s dull rock. Soul is fun but not my everyday listen, it was fine
Didn't write 70% of it and all the covers are worse than the original performances
I don't know if I'm just oversaturated with the 1960s on this list (I've listened to five 60s albums in the past week), but this was just fine. I liked the energy of it, and Otis Redding's talent is immense, but I didn't really connect with the album. I'll be honest, I was disappointed by Respect. Considering how big it was for Aretha Franklin, I was expecting more out of the original, but at just two minutes, it felt like a reprise in a movie score. The obvious highlights are the covers of My Girl and Satisfaction, and their popularity is justified. Granted, none of them were even written by Otis Redding, and while there is talent in covering songs, the rest was just underwhelming. I did like the original I've Been Loving You Too Long. 2.5 out of 5.
Not super great. I usually like Otis Redding but a lot of these were just dull covers.
So, it would seem we're now in a rut of 60s cover albums. Shame the algorithm couldn't be modified to mix things up a bit more thoroughly. This album is fine, but I prefer the original material. And ironically enough, Aretha's cover is better than the original material here - so the fault, once again, lies with Robert for selecting this album for his 1,001 when there surely must be other albums by the artist that would be better suited for the "must hear" moniker.
Okish
Not a huge fan
Meh. Good blues and nice tones and shi, but like it just doesn't scratch my adhd hyperactive brain. I won't listen to it again, although now I'm a little more versed in the world of blues which is always nice
I was excited to listen to that album but sadly it didn't catch me. It has some interesting stuff here and there but overall it is bland album. I couldn't name favorite tracks from that album sadly. 2/5
it's certainly soul. some very recognizable songs and covers. but it was boring. a classic but boring to listen to. I feel like it would be perfect for like dinner party ambiance
