Reviews (page 8 of 13)

Decent album, not my favorite Supertramp.

Was excited but ultimately a tad let down. I love breakfast in America but this just felt very dated to me. I love the dude w the high voice and he like barely sang where was he

Album No. 0057 on my list. I’ve never listened to any of the tracks on this album before, possibly because it doesn’t contain any of Supertramp’s big hits. I was surprised how much of a prog-rock album this is. The tracks are mostly quite long, the sounds very much like the decade this was released in, and the lyrics are more complex than I expected. That being said, none of the tracks got in my head too much. “Bloody Well Right” and “Dreamer” were my favorites. 3/5 stars.

Reminds me of queen - had it on in the background. Morning bops

A well-crafted and thoughtful album that blends art rock with pop sensibility, 𝘊𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘺 showcases Supertramp’s knack for melody and studio precision. The production is spotless, the arrangements clever, and songs like 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭, 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, and 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳 still stand out. Yet, despite its polish, the record sometimes feels emotionally distant and overly calculated. Technically impressive, but not always moving — a fine album, just not the masterpiece many claim it to be.

Pretty fun, solid, and enjoyable. Was already familiar with "bloody well right" and "dreamer", but the rest was new to me. Not otherworldly but decent.

How is School the most played song on this album? I’ve never heard it before, and I thought I knew Supertramp pretty decently. Bloody Well Right and Dreamer are absolute bangers which bring me back to my teenage years listening to them on breakfast radio, but the rest is filler.

Trying too hard to be epic.

Bloody well right and Dreamers are bangers. The rest is very forgettable innit it

My dad was a big fan back in the day but I don't see the appeal.

I was tapping my foot - some good songs for my having music on playlist

really enjoyed instrumentals all the way through school, hide in your shell, dreamer, rudy and crime of the century were my favourites

A couple bangers rest too instrumental

3.7/5 first time lsiten alright stuff not as good as there next album

There's some okay stuff on side one here... maybe "Bloody Well Right," and I like when the piano hits midway through "School."

The highs of this album are amazing. I mean the intro to Bloody Well Right? Come on, that's brilliant. But the lows leave something wanting.

I didn't know that Supertramp has two main songwriters/lead singers. The guy who sings on all of their big hits has a VERY strange voice to me, just below Geddy Lee in terms of ridiculousness. Which is why I've tended to avoid Supertramp. The other lead singer, Davies, has a totally normal rock voice and is fine. Hodgson's distinctive voice is what sets this band apart from most; I just don't like it. It's interesting - this is part yacht rock, part prog.... so is Supertramp just a poor man's Steely Dan? "Hide in your Shell" is an ambitious track that survives not being terribly interesting, as do "Asylum" and "Dreamer." You have to appreciate the fact that the band takes a musical idea and tries to get as much mileage out of it as they can, throwing as many ideas at it as make sense. I like that. THREE STARS

Very 70s which is not at all a bad thing

these english lads know how to strike a cord making me feel like i was one of the guys at the clubs It also gave me those fun moments were i able to air drum and imagine myself rocking out with them

More prog-rock than I was expecting. Pretty enjoyable listen, solid album.

Not as bad as I thought this was going to be...I expected something more like Kid Rock, and I got something more like Queen.

I liked it more than the average Brit rock album on here. The epic sax bumps it a step up from meh

Supertramp’s Crime of the Century. The prog-pop sweet spot. Every song sounds like someone trying to make sense of growing up.

This was a good listen. Solid 70s proggy yachty rock. 3.5

This album felt familiar but not in a i have listened to way but in a this sounds like someone else

Ah good old Supertramp. Everyone's favourite prog rock/Brit pop crossover. Their first studio/commercial album! Didn't like the start so much but final few songs were top stuff. Not as good as what was to follow ultimately but high 3* for me.

Liked this way more than i anticipated. **-coded. Cool cover. Shoutout pops! Better than Yes. THREE! That old yes rating is cap

“Bloody Well Right” and “Dreamer” are the reasons to listen to Crime of the Century. Maybe the only reasons? Ok, that was harsh—but not far off.

Legger den i stedet på platespilleren the way god intended. The Wall lenge før The Wall.

«Bloody Well Right» må være den mest catchy proglåta? Andre halvdel blir litt boogie woogie med strykerpartier. Men fremdeles mange gode deler.

Cheesy but fun

This is very stupid, but I was not familiar with Supertramp. I thought they were funk or something, so I must have conflated the band name with Super Freak as a kid and it never got corrected. Anyway, this is actually kind of right up my alley, especially the title track.

fun enough, boppy and pink-floydish

Hit and miss for me much as I wanted to love it.

It’s like a prog/yacht rock combo that feels super duper 70’s. An enjoyable listen.

Another solid outing by Supertramp. School, Bloody Well Right, and Dreamer are the standout tracks for me.

I kind of like Supertramp and their thoughtful keyboard driven soft rock! An album was a bit much though, and nothing here comes close to 'Logical Song' which is superb.

This album felt like that feeling when you know you're about to take a giant, satisfying shit and get all excited on your way to the toilet, only to have the final product be, although substantial, underwhelming. This was like a substantial (yet underwhelming) shit. I still got some enjoyment out of it, and was able to enjoy my time with it, but ultimately it left me less than completely satisfied.

decent at the time

Didn't really resonate with me

Good prog rock album

I'm imagining some shoulder-length haired corduroy cap-wearing optimistic singer swaying from side to side with a glint in his eye. It's sad that he died, but please spare me.

When I was either 10 or 12, I really liked Supertramp. I bought this from the library on vinyl for about a dime and then pretty quickly realized, not all classic rock albums are Led Zeppelin IV. I then lugged this album around for about twenty years until selling it for probably about a dime. It has a few good songs. Honestly, Breakfast in America is a better album as far as hits go. I still have some shame about owning this as I've grown up. I did date a very lovely girl that really liked Supertramp and I find it very funny that she put them on her top bands list.

I'm not sure how an album could have so much going on and still be boring. I did however like the sax bit at the very end

Classic

This is prog rock with the edges sanded off for mass media consumption and radio plays. That said, they are talented musicians and some of the songs are honestly classics. Favorite songs: School, Bloody Well Right and Crime of the Century 3.5⭐️

Solid. Not breakfast in America.

Supertramp is an interesting case. They are close to the often overlooked Gentle Giant by making prog poppier and accessible. But where the latter almost always deliver, Supertramp is an on and off affair. This album has so many great tracks, but Dreamer is fuckin annoying. And so all in all it's a balanced out affair I'd say.

This has a few moments. But overall it feels pretty dated and like they are trying too hard. I don’t know … maybe it could grow on me but it’s meh upon first listen.

Not bad. Some of the songs are somewhat catchy. But why is this album included and not Breakfast in America (you know, the one with all their hits)??

It's what people who don't like mid-70s British prog rock think mid-70s British prog rock sounds like. It's ok. It's got it's moments. I'm a big fan of the era. But I find myself not getting the scratch my prog itch needs.

I feel like you have to be in the right mood for Supertramp. I'm a much bigger fan of "Breakfast in America", their next album which has some of their best known hits. But this album still has its moments - "School", is probably my favourite, with a great soundscape and a really ominous tone. "Hide in Your Shell" works too, but "Dreamer" is hopelessly dated and twee. It ranks as a high 3 for me.

Not bad

Not bad, I would not call it prog. More like when dad wants somerhing more challenging on the weekend. I liked it. Fav: Dreamer

3/5. Beetje saai

This is #day408 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… until today, I'd only known Supertramp through two songs: "The Logical Song" and "Don't Leave Me Now." So, Crime of the Century is the first full album of theirs I've listened to. What can I say? Indeed, it's very '70s-sounding music, and feels just right being heard on a Technics SU-7300. Maybe I should give prog rock another chance? But then, Supertramp isn't just prog. There's art rock and pop woven in... The second half of the title track is sublime. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day409.

I've never listened to this album, but I knew one or two songs (4). When it's good and groovy it's really nice but it can get tedious fast (too much piano).

very enjoyable pop music

School: fire opener. 9/10 Bloody Well Right: good until the fringe parts. 7/10 Hide in Your Shell: super fringe start, then becomes cool trippy fringe. Kinda snoozefest. 7/10 Not good, cant get through all the fringe

This was okay lol. Kind of sounds like budget Queen honestly. I get the direction and can vibe with it, but overall it’s like yacht rock, Queen, and some antics of new wave 80s. At least to me.

Excellent album, a few famous songs that I’ve heard before but didn’t really know who played them.

Crime of the Century is more rough around the edges than Breakfast in America. It also doesn’t really have any standout hits or anything. But it was pleasant enough for one listen. I’ll probably forget it entirely in a week though

Interesting that Rick Davies' death was announced today (9/8). Of course everyone my age has heard Bloody Well Right and it takes me back to '74. And of course there's Dreamer, probably my favorite Supertramp song. Two classics, but nothing else really grabs me. I need a minimum of four good/great songs to call the whole album a classic. Good, but not a classic.

Dad- 6 Mom- 8 Mike- NA Lori- 5 Michael- NA Miles- NA Cole- NA Avg- 6.33

I thought I’d enjoy this more than I did, but holding out for the album with The Logical Song. 3.5

It was fine. It was Supertramp. It sounded like Supertramp all the way through and did not deviate at any point. Completely mid.

I was always put off Supertramp as my only memory of them as a kid was an advert for their greatest hits voiced by Jeremy Clarkson, who proclaimed it was “proper music”. Understandably I thought it would be wank of the highest degree as a result so never listened to them. This was really up and down - some great pop ballads that reminded me of Elton John, mixed with some really annoying parts. Real middle of the road stuff.

One of the best of all time? I don’t think so. A solid album, but certainly not even up to Breakfast in America standards.

Just OK. Great sound production but I wasn't feeling it.

Weird. Kinda operatic. The “sparkly” production kinda lost its appeal on me after the first 20 minutes or so. The record has some cool moments and it’s very ambitious. But it didn’t connect fully with me. Maybe it would another time. It’s by no means bad, in fact, it’s quite good. It just didn’t really click. Typically, I’m a pretty big prog rock fan. Sometimes, it takes time to grow on me. So I am open to a revisit in the future. For now 6/10

More proggy than I expected! I think it'd grow with more listens but on first impressions it's solid with some good tunes, if a bit unremarkable overall.

I haven't listened to much Supertramp. Enjoyed a lot of this, I'm a fan of the piano heavy pop rock style of music. Album starts off super strong with School and Bloody Well Right. The album lags a little as it goes on, but overall solid album.

Solid but it’s no Breakfast in America

Nice to listen robot once but inhale to confess that they have strong singles but it doesn’t work out throughout the length of an LP.

A good, but not amazing album from a classic rock group.

A cosmic experience

Decent a bit like steely dan

This was good, nothing too outstanding though. I only knew Dreamer coming into this from this album and it was definitely the best song on this but the rest was still pleasant enough to listen to.

Fine. Good classic stuff.

i’m not totally sure how i feel about this. there are some cool moments but overall i didn’t find myself enjoying it that much. seems like one that will be forgotten very quickly after listening

1974 I know 'Dreamer' and seemingly this feels like a standout track on an album I've never heard before. I don't know too much about Supertramp, but this feels like it should and could be a lot more experimental and progression, but instead we get a relatively safe album, full of easy accessible tracks. A shame. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ no need to really Safe and average ★★★☆☆ (5/10)

Somehow have never been on my radar. More interesting than I thought

Not at all terrible and certainly they would get worse. The playing is crisp, generally, and there's a pristine sound overall, which almost make the considerable ambition pay off. But it feels like an overreach on a net basis. Hard to see ST as much more than a poor man’s Genesis. Or a late-'70s version of Coldplay. A smattering of Pink Floyd? Barely a smidgen, a quarter-smidgen at most.

Surprisingly familiar

Prog. Good album to listen to during Sunday morning breakfast while reading depressing news.

Not my style but some good catchy stuff that I could definitely explore further if I was in the mood

So it is the most 70's classic rock album I think you're gonna find... It sounds like they tried going a bit prog but either missed or just wiffed it. I'm not sure. I enjoyed it, I was familiar enough with them and I enjoy this era of rock enough. I don't see many people getting their hair blown back by it but it is worth a listen one hundred percent. It's enjoyable to listen to while driving or doing yard work and you want some rock.

Maybe need more time with this but it's not sticking like a lot of the 70's rock I'm getting.

You know, I don't think I really like Supertramp. I mean it's kind of weird because I love prog, but Supertramp has never really been prog to me. I don't know. They're fine. But they're too, like, squeaky clean or something. I don't really know how to describe it. And I can't really point out what I don't like about it specifically. Maybe the keys/synths are too much for me. It sounds sort of plastic and artificial. I mean I like some songs here and there, Bloody Well Right from this record obviously. But this album came out the same year as the first Rush album and for this type of music there is a clear winner and it isn't Supertramp. 2.5/5

As a child of the 80s, I knew Supertramp for radio hits, but this was my first full album listen. Interesting stuff- I'd like to listen a few more times to really gel with it, but my favorites were "Bloody Well Right," which I knew, and "Rudy," which I didn't. This album sounds like the love child of ELO, the Moody Blues, and Steely Dan.

my first job in food service, i spent all day side by side with my boss who only listened to supertramp live tracks and that one indie song where the man was afraid of dentists. if i had known this album existed, perhaps we could have found middle ground. 2.5

Up and down album for me. I think the last few songs are much better than the beginning. 3.5/5

Rudy is a highlight. School is creepy. Clarinets don’t really belong in rock music. Proto yacht rock. Not my favorite prog ever but you can see the band that makes Breakfast in America.

Elton john if he was straight and there were 4 of him. That’s a very general summary of this album but I think it’s accurate. VERY 70s. Lots going on, reminds me of Pink Floyd. Bit of a trip ngl.

Very Mid. Nothing amazing, but I don't hate it. It's very middle of the road.

Sus mejores alumnos: Coldplay, Florence + the Machine, Bat for Lashes, Tears for Fears y Keane. Crime of the Century dejó los teclados manchados de sensibilidad pop, crítica social y producción sofisticada.

I think the only way I can take this is via the singles, a staple of FM radio in the '80s. They dominate the album, supported by the rest of the album tracks. It's ok.

I liked it, but not enough to get into more of their stuff.

Pretty decent but it's not Chicago.

A nice snapshot of the '70s sound. The title track is a standout, showcasing the band’s signature style. While I enjoyed the album overall, it doesn’t quite reach the level of some of their best work.

This was a fine album. I'm growing a bit weary of the British albums here lately. Not to say that it is bad, but the lines begin to blur when you have heard so many British rock albums in succession. Taking that into consideration, I came into the album with a bit of bias. That bias makes me want to put this album at a 2. However, I don't think that would be appropriate as this album wasn't truly bad. I don't necessarily know if I agree with its inclusion on this list, but it was still a decent rock album. A bit middle of the road.

I was sad to get another 70s rock album but this was prog rock, which I’ve only listened to from Pink Floyd before. Some really cool instrumentals and vibes!!! It was mostly a fun listen. 6.5/10

I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't seek it out again.

I feel like I *almost* really like this. A lot to love but then something just doesn’t quite gel. Asylum and Crime of the Century were my favorite tracks. Knocked from four to three because it was also annoying to listen to - the quiet parts were too quiet and the loud sections were so loud. I was constantly fiddling with the volume the whole way through.

Decent rock

This is the first of Supertramp’s albums that moves away from its art school wankery and into a poppier vibe. Songs like “Bloody Well Right” and the classic “Dreamer” are clearly the standouts, but really this album starts to move the direction of traffic into something that will culminate in the masterpiece that is “Breakfast in America” a few years later.

The only song I knew on this album was Dreamer. And the only other Supertramp song I can think of is Breakfast in America. I don’t think of this group much but I actually liked this listen. Dramatic 70s rock but fun and showcased some musical variety. Much better than yesterdays ambient stuff

Hmmm. Dreamer is good. Bloody well right is good—some interesting stuff, and some really dull stuff. I don't love it, I wouldn't buy it. I wouldn't turn it off or change the station. So a 3 it is.

Biz 1970er masseware. Eich easy aber würki null speziell. Aber ja, 3 crimes for the 20th century Befor super trump

Good, just didn’t vibe with it as much

Okayish ig. Instruments are good, vocals are meh. It's just not for me. A forgettable expirence, except for the last song 6.5/10

School is a trip, second track is fairly solid too. A lot of their songs end really well. Those two minutes of Rudy starting around the halfway point hit. Way too much piano, that’s just a me thing tho. The slower, less intense parts aren’t interesting, but the highs on the album are great and unique. Like they crescendo really well. Works well as an album.

Soft-core Prog-Rock, but like, not in a bad way? By today's standards, this is classic Yacht Rock(TM), for sure. I know "Dreamer" was the single, but wikipedia claims that "School" and "Bloody Well Right" are the more enduring hits. It's hard to argue with that as I find Dreamer pretty cloying after about 30seconds. I can’t see School as a hit but as an album opener, you could do far worse. Portions of Bloody Well Right feel like they had direct influence on Pink Floyd's Animals (1977), which surprised me at first. I am much more familiar with the latter, so hearing similar sounds caught me off guard here. At ~45min, this is a very manageable prog-rock album that never feels like it goes off on a big space voyage for too long despite the slightly ominous album cover or the threatening “will he take a sailboat ride?" in the chorus of “Asylum”. We get harmonicas, saxophones, talkbox guitars, Wurlitzers, all the things I wish we still heard more often. I don't know if I need to revisit this whole album, but I'll spend some more time with Supertramp.

Some good tracks there, but wouldn't put in my playlist, but won't mind listening if starts playing

Reminds me of Dark Side of the Moon. Asylum was my favorite.

Vanille

OK, not a huge fan but not a hater either. More musicality than I would have guessed for what I otherwise recall as a pop band.

Started out so good....then faded into just fine.

Love the weighty synth sounds. Blends with the guitars. Drums sound nice and tight. Stereo field is super tasteful. Everything sounds pretty up front but not super loud which is crazy. Love it.

Supertramp has never been one of my favorites. Their songs are full of amazing moments but never come together for me. I felt the same for this project. Rudy was my favorite song. Asylum was almost good but it just didnt do it.

Lightweight and dated, but still good smooth jams.

Looking through the track list on Wikipedia, I think I preferred the songs with 'Davies' on vocals over the 'Hodgson' songs. I liked the piano bit on the first track, some of the heavier riffs, and the long drawn-out ominous jam at the end of the album. The lyrics were weak and the whole thing had a West End musical kinda vibe.

Classic 70s! Fun and good cohesive energy as an album, but not many standouts.

Nice 1970's pop/rock, good musicianship. Not overly exciting but I'll happily listen to this. Almost a 4.

I thought I liked this album a lot more than I did, the second half was great, Rudy onwards. But a few of the earlier songs started to irritate me.

Fine, but it can be dangerous to write classics when most of your songs are only fine

Prog rock lite. It's okay I suppose but it lacks the inventiveness and theatricality of better prog rock bands. Hard to believe this and Pink Floyd's Animals are considered to be in the same genre.

idk super tramp just doesn't do it for me. I appreciate them but don't find myself going back.

It took an age for me to find Breakfast In America on CD. One reason why I was, once upon a time, a big endorser of streaming. Halcyon days… Oh, yeah, this. So so.

Interesting - never listened to them before

I find it so hard not to enjoy Supertramp. I didn't start this project a fan, but I may very well become one by the time I'm through. While this isn't Supertramp's best record, it still has great vocal harmonies and fun songs. "Dreamer" is the clear high point here.

Crime of the century

missing a bit of punch at the end. is a solid listen. 3/5

Kinda weird, kinda silly, kinda liked it.

never heard of them before but enjoyed the music. quiet eclectic with dramatic arrangements. will revisit. close to giving it a 4.

The first track was promising but the rest was boring

Never listened to Supertramp (knowingly, at least) in my life until now. This was actually pretty cool. Like yeah, it's corny, but I don't know. It's perfectly enjoyable. I'm not sure when I'll come back to it but I enjoyed the ride. I felt like I was at a white dad's barbecue, but in a good way. He can grill.

2.5 stars

bom album. mas não é meu gosto

Decent listen. Couple great tunes.

I couldn't get too excited about this album, but I can't really put my finger on why that is. It was just OK.

It’s no “breakfast in America” but it’s still solid

Enjoyable throughout. Cool soundscapes. None of the songs particularly jumped out, mind.

Not bad

I didnt know they did all those hits, only one on here imo

pretty cool

Surprisingly like this.

It's a nice detour into prog-rock. However, "Crime of the Century" is nowhere near as good as the likes of Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree. I suppose some people really love it. The outro of the title track makes a classic conclusion to the album. Other than that, there's nothing to say about it. 3 stars for "Crime of the Century".

Pretty solid prog-pop. A classic in Bloody Well Right, but the rest didn't really hit me. Couple songs that I didn't like (Hide In Your Shell and Dreamer). They got a kinda silly, childish sound that I feel like a lot of 70's prog bands would dip into and I'm not a fan. Overall though, baffles me this album was picked over Breakfast in America, which has way more hits on it. Not that this record doesn't deserve it, but BiA should have been put in before Crime of the Century was even considered.

Some parts were pretty enjoyable, more parts felt a little derivative / forgettable. Nothing was actively unpleasant

Trumpet goes hard same with piano. Limited vocals

Hugely popular in my first year at uni, played it loads and tried hard to love it. A fine album clearly but maybe a little too close to prog rock for me...

Tricky. I kinda enjoyed it but I have already forgotten it.

I enjoy supertramp, breakfast in america has bee in my playlist for some time. Crime of the century is not quite as catchy but it has very similar strength, beautiful piano, philosophical lyrics and nice progressions . It lacks enough catchy and top tier songs for me to rate it in top albums but very enjoyable

Yea i mean, I can see the complexity and difficulty and originality of what's here. But I think its also very forgettable for the most part

A vibe but not much variation

This album is very Pink Floyd, not even just the music, they went for a space cover a year after DSOTM 🤨 if you're gonna have an influence might as well make it a good one I guess I did enjoy this, some of these tracks have a nice build and the brass is cool when they appear. The typical prog lack of structure puts me off slightly. Also as I go to do the rating the next day, I realise I didn't find a lot of it memorable. So 3 seems fair

I didn't think it was too bad. Listened all the way through with no complaints really. The only song I knew was "Dreamer" because of some commercial that it's on. Although I've heard of Supertramp, I've never been exposed to their music.

Pretty good. Very 70s in a dramatic movie soundtrack sort of way that reminded me of, like, Xanadu or the Beegees Sgt Pepper movie. So maybe not good? But I liked it. Crime of the Century was good.

It's good old-head stuff, but I've been overexposed to this type of music due to many years of riding around in a crew van with the radio tuned to the classic rock station.

Solid album with some hits. Going to be a little tough and put it on the three side of a 3.5.

The hits were a nostalgic and enjoyable listen, and the rest of the album held up? Not too shabby, Supertramp!

Supertramp have a sound —springy organ synth, choral harmonies, loopy 58-pound weakling lead singer— that I don’t hate. But even though each song is internally creative, they all sound similar — that Supertramp sound is pervasive. This whole album, while somewhat entertaining, sounds derivative of itself. It’s like every song could be in a sonic sequel to Tommy.

Crime of the Century sounds like your standard issue 70s rock album — well-produced, decent musicianship, but nothing that really jumps out or sticks with you. It’s not bad by any means, just kind of... there. If you’re a big Supertramp fan, I’m sure it hits differently, but for me, it just blended in with a lot of other albums from the era.

Solide Top: Scool

"well it's not as though he's fat, no there's more to it than that" lol what

muzycznie świetnie, vibe mi nie do końca odpowiada. trudno określić czemu

Started off excellently, wore me down the more the album went on. Dreamer was a song that was completely lost on me.

25/04/2025 This isn't their best work, I'm just hoping more of their albums pop up.

2 excellent songs amid a lot of forgettable material.

i was impressed at the beginning - first track fucks, second track fucks... then crash. has some other highlights throughout though.

It's nice, will listen to it more, but it's not like insanely good to get 5 stars

Bloody Well Right -- ok it's a classic Asylum -- sounds like it wants to be in a musical. Bleh Dreamer - don't hate it but I wouldn't add it to a playlist Rudy - technically good but boring Crime of the Century - another one out of a musical Didn't finish. I never loved the group that much. Now it seems over-produced and looking to be a rock opera but without the passion and story of something like Tommy

Ymmärrän, miksi levy on päässyt listalle.

Used to listen a lot to Supertramp and I still like some of the tracks on this album (e.g. School and Dreamer) but I wasn‘t in the mood to listen to it all the way through.

This really grew on me. I wouldn't consider myself a fan of easy listening or however else this could be defined as, but this album has a nice groove and the horn playing holds it all together. 3.25/5.

VERY of its time. Feels like it’s trying too hard to be epic. At least it dials back (some of) prog’s worst indulgences.

i found this kind of charming (if deeply unserious) and mostly tolerable in the same vein as ELO and certain songs by queen, but it pushed the limits of my good graces for going on for far too long. it’s like a 2.75 really.

Good progressive album. Not wow but ok

I didn't think I'd save any tracks from this album but I saved "Dreamer". Classic rock isn't really my jam.

=The Beatles

I REALLY enjoyed the start of this album. Periodically really cool. Easy listen but nothing that breaks into my playlists. Instrumentally this album is AWESOME

If EVERY song was like School (the first one) this would get a 4, but they progressively got a little stranger. That's 70s rock for you, I guess.

Kind of forgettable again, but Bloody Well Right and Dreamer are real good.

Another 'okay' album. I'm not a huge fan but it doesn't hurt me when it's in the background. I recognized 'Dreamer'. 'School' was a pleasant discovery. Unfortunately, it was the first track. After that, I found it a bit plain.

This is such nerd music - almost as bad as Steely Dan.

Not something I normally listen to but I enjoyed it.

This felt like the 70s. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5

school- 5 bloody well right- 5 hide in your shell- 5 asylum- 5 dreamer- 5 rudy- 5. im not listening to all that if everyone was listening- 5 crime of the century- 5 most boring shit ever

Like it. Has some banging surprises!

Great sound but the songs didn't really do anything to me. They could have used more work.

Feel like this had potential to be awesome all the way through. Let down.

Had high expectations, was let down. A couple great songs but the rest was very meh

Music was good. I like some of their songs off other records. Nothing really stuck out to me here.

Feels like the instrumentals often overpower the vocals, it appears "hide in your shell" was the (finger quotes) emotional song on the album but the lyrics still take a backseat. Dreamer sounds like the Supertramp I am familiar with, with the keyboard and vocals, which makes sense as this was 3 full albums before breakfast in america. Everything i read about this album talks about how great it is at talking about "young adult confusion" and while the production is good and the use of sax/piano/keyboard is really cool, the "message" is kind of lost in translation for me. Idk, maybe it's something that was more "emotional" back then when people didn't talk about their feelings as much, the lyrics i've read aren't bad just not as like "deep" as i expected. Overall, would I listen again? I do not think so, if i had to replay a song i'd pick school or dreamer, overall, i'd rate it 6.5/10.

***An ok album

I love how loud the bass is on this album. The true winners of this record are the bass and keyboards. This felt a lot like ELO, not in a bad way. Very fun record and would definitely listen again. I also didn’t realize “blood well right”—a killer song—was Supertramp.

You know, I actually liked this more than I thought I might... I know and like Supertramp just fine, but I mostly just know the hits and the later stuff. I never heard this early album beyond School on the radio. They are definitely easy listening and definitely not something I would put on, but this was a great album to put on while I worked my way through today's to-do list.

Copy-paste what was written in Levine part 2.

i just know these guys have long hair

Pretty fun prog album, reminded me of classic albums from Rush and Yes

Schon die Sounds von "Even in the quietest Moments", welches ich dann doch besser und gereifter finde.

Лучшая песня - Crime of the Century.

Nice MOR feel. A bit dated but still some nice tracks

As 3/5 of an album a 3/5 album can be. Musically great with a lot of talent, but just not my thing. Asylum and Crime of the Century stand above the rest, though, but not enough to carry, sadly. The cover is majestic, tho. ⭐⭐⭐

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this.

Not bad overall. Even if some of it sounds like elevator music.

"Bloody Well Right" ... eh, OK. Want more yacht, less prog.

not my cup of tea

I quite liked this, which was nice.

Some interesting melodies going gon

A few good tracks in a nostalgic "I remember this from when I was a kid" way, but not a "Oh yeah - this is my jam" way.

A Supertramp album full of Supertramp songs I had never heard. And it was good! Rudy was a surprise fave with its funk driven guitar riffs and horns in the middle of the track.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. It's fine and all -- but it didn't break a lot of new ground for me. I know the hits here -- and there are a couple of other decent tracks (Asylum, Rudy), but for the most part, it left me cold.

It was 70's music. Nothing stood out to me as amazing and nothing was bad. Good vibes and a decent album.

couples tunes

Some decent pop music that holds up OK, but was only OK 3-star music 50 years ago. This is what you get with too much emphasis on synthesizers.

Better than yesterday’s live album but still, prog rock is just not for me.

This didn't do much for me. Would only listen for the singles, but even then I probably won't come back to it.

Pretty nice tunes.

70s pop prog joy, yay yay

I loved the instrumentals for each song. Each song had its own identity but together they are all still cohesive. My favorite was Asylum!

I’ll give it three stars for now. Some parts were a little too slow for me but I feel like it’ll grow on me after a few more listens.

Like this was a pretty good album, not my favorite by Supertramp but it was still pretty good, I didn't know any of the songs on here but I liked it!

Not bad. Not bad, at all.

Solid album, way better than I'd expected. Would make good car music

Overall pretty good, I didn't expect this to be super great from what I hear on the radio but I was nodding a long to some things here. Rudy was great and there was a nice hidden theramin in Hide In Your Shell, overall 3 stars I think, but maybe a mid 3.

Progressive, but in their own way. I want to like this more than I actually do. Bloody Well Right is simultaneously really great and somewhat annoying. Dreamer is just plain annoying. 3 stars.

i first listened to this in the background while cleaning and doing various things and i was enjoying it. but now when i focus on it and pay attention to the music fully, it’s not really hitting me. i should love it, it all sounds good and well made. but it doesn’t quite click for some reason. it just simply exists. fave song: “if everyone was listening”

favorite songs: school, bloody well right, hide in your shell, if everyone was listening, crime of the century

Decent rock. I enjoyed this as background music while I was working, but don't think I'd sit and just listen to it. I was surprised to learn it's not a concept album telling the backstory of the perpetrator of the 'Crime of the Century' but turns out they just liked that track name best.

An album that reminds me why I love this list. Not the best album but a good reminder that Supertramp exists. I feel like this album could be great but it never really "gets there." The keys are awesome and production is top notch though. 5.75/10 (2.875/5)

This feels a little like prog rock lite. I’ve heard more edge from the other prog rock albums on this list

A pleasant surprise!

Enjoyable but nothing stood out. Not my favourite Supertramp album.

Finely produced, bordering on sterility. They have some delightful melodies in a lot of the songs. It's sort of prog lite, which I really don't mean as a negative. They aren't self indulgent and it's all pretty palatable. Though they are quite corny with the singing about school, theatre and Jimmy Cream. Plus the vocalist with the whiny voice was somewhat annoying.

I forget what I gave this listening to it so I’ll give it a 3

Wow. Supertramp is one of those bands that has always been on the periphery of my interests but I’ve never given them a real shake. A ton of really cool sounds and pieces. I’m not sure I’m a big fan of the whole, but the musical ideas with which they play are all very interesting. Adding the musical complexity of prog with the more relaxed tone of something poppier? Excited to see more of them on later albums!

That was one saxy Pink Floyd record. This album starts out really strong, the middle is pretty boring, then ends on a somewhat interesting note.

Entertaining

Feels like eating a fried fish and getting mostly batter, "Rudy" is definitely a nice bit of meat though.

the title track is very good

Sometimes very good but sometimes only ok!

Very rock ballad, piano and sax. Not really for me.

cv c’etait sympa

A little spacey and out there, better than I first suspected it would be.

downloaded 4,6,7,8.

Enjoyed it but don’t think I’ll be returning to it

Good easy listening album. Nothing bad but not thing great either.

I’m not typically a fan of 70s rock, but this was a fun record.

it was aight, not bad but stopped paying attention

Only 5/8 tracks on streaming service. Still pretty good though

Not really my vibe, so I didn't like it too much.

Bloody Well Right and Dreamer are some all-time faves. The rest of the album was new to me. It is theatrical and layered, kind of like a prime Pink Floyd album with less self-indulgence. That said, none of the new songs to me managed to stand out on their own. Not as poppy as Breakfast In America, which I do love. It makes sense that that became The Big One, but this showed the promise of the band.

I knew Bloody Well Right. My Mind just goes right to the same 20 albums/bands. This will be a good exercise. Songs with guy singing lower are more enjoyable for me Extended out to to end was too repetitive

I LOVE Breakfast of Champions. I don’t love this. What is it missing? I dunno, man. It just feels less… dense? I’m used to good progressive pop having a bit of girth. Supertramp just feels a bit hollow compared to their other classic work. I’m not getting that satisfying hit of endorphins that I get during a real Supertramp banger. I think the production just feels lacking compared to their later work. It leans a little too much into the Yacht Rock spectrum than I would have preferred. It’s thier Pink Floyd moments that really get me excited. The tone of the album is darker in general than Breakfast. I wish I loved it. I wanted to love it. 3.1/5

I thought I liked Supertramp, but I've realized I only really like Breakfast in America. I like a few songs on this album, but that's all.

It didn't make me feel much...

Cool sound, I can see why it was influential. Not a banger for me personally, but I enjoyed some songs!

A quintessentialy 70s feel on a genre I don't know a lot about. I hear the sounds Hedwig was referencing. This was a good listen, but not my genre.

It was ok. It's what I expected from Supertramp.

Psychedelic, trippy and spaced out. Theatrical sound, with beautiful moments of musicality, carried over a backdrop of lucidity. Funky one.

Its fine

Pretty nice vibes, but the recording was jumping all over in sound level

I really liked if everyone was listening and bloody well right.

Very Bob’s-Burgers type of album.

This was hard to dislike, and it had all the right parts, but something is just slightly "off" with all of the songs here somehow. It's like the band has taken the best parts of other contemporary bands, then mashed them together in some way that just doesn't sound right to my ear. I'm going with 3 stars, as there wasn't anything awful here, but there was also nothing that really stood out, not even the only track I already knew.

pre: I just realized this band hashes to the same bucket as Cheap Trick in my head. I have no idea if I've consciously heard any of their music before I almost didn't listen to this, I started skipping in the first track. But there was something in the second track that made me stay with it. There were parts of this that I liked and parts I didn't. It feels like what would come out if someone was tasked with making an album that was clearly rooted in the 70s without being prog, punk, disco, funk, hard/blues rock, etc. 2.5, rounding up to 3

I'll give it a 2.5 rounded up. A little long but inoffensive

Surprisingly enjoyable for me

7/10 fave: school

Mediocre Tramp Last song probably saved this from being 2/5

I really liked the title (and last) track in particular, but everything else was... kinda just fine.

Not a big supertramp fan. Meh album overall

Although I'm no stranger to '70s AOR, I only know a couple of Supertramp songs, 'Take The Long Way Home', 'Logical Song' and 'Give A Little Bit.'... none of which are here, but 'Bloody Well Right' sounds familiar too... can you imagine a pop song today going for 1:38 before the first vocal comes in? A Sabrina Carpenter song would be almost over by then... BWR got to 35 on the charts, anyway. That continual plodding sixteenth-note electric piano sure shows up a lot, doesn't it? You have to be patient with this record, and buy the aesthetic... it doesn't work for me, unfortunately. The 'go for what you want but the world is controlled by evil people' vibe throughout feels pedestrian 50 years later. "If Everyone Was Listening" is a nice '70s ballad I'd never heard. "Bloody Well Right" is the standout track for a reason.

Definitely a cool band and some cool tracks but I kind of got lost in the jams. I know they have better songs to come though

Perfect 2.5 for me. Not unpleasant but also not very memorable. Unlikely to listen again but wouldn’t complain if someone else put it on

Like a weaker mash up of Queen, 70's Elton and Pink Floyd. Not without merit but not enough for me to come back. A low 3.
