Reviews (page 7 of 13)

This is a really good album. While listening I felt engaged and satisfied the whole way through — it’s interesting, melodic, and genuinely enjoyable from start to finish. The vocals are excellent (especially Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies’ distinctive voices blending together), and the themes have real weight — loneliness, alienation, the pressures of modern life — without ever feeling too heavy. The instrumentals are a highlight too: rich, dynamic, and full of great keyboard and saxophone work that give the record a very distinctive sound. It flows beautifully and has that perfect balance of prog, rock, and pop elements. Crime of the Century is smooth, thoughtful, and very well-crafted. Easily one of Supertramp’s strongest records.

I've always been pretty indifferent about this band. I have a distinct memory of my mom listening to "Take the Long Way Home" when I was a little kid, which isn't on this album, but I digress. There's some nice melodies on this album, but there's some very dated 70s elements and some proggy elements that sort of take me out it on a lot of the songs. "Asylum" was probably my favorite. Light 3.5 stars.

Dreamer is cool, obviously. I liked Rudy too. This wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, but this is just prog-rock without pretension. I wouldn't say it was uninteresting, but there's absolutely nothing I will carry forward from this.

Needs more harmonica. But other than that, it's okay.

Like a weaker mash up of Queen, 70's Elton and Pink Floyd. Not without merit but not enough for me to come back. A low 3.

Not their top hits, other than Dreamer. A bit '70s kitsch. They definitely get better and more refined.

I've never been a fan of Supertramp (or prog-rock in general). So, even if I this may be objectively pretty good, I just can't seem to connect with this album (not even with the very popular "Dreamer"). My favourite track is "Rudy". I also liked "Crime of the Century". Overall, I think this album is in my 3 stars range (but mostly because of those two songs).

There were some songs I couldn't access and the ones that I could weren't good enough to look further. It did autoplay the logical song which I quite liked so there was good to be had regardless.

This is like prog-light. It's not adventurous enough to be proper prog but neither it is light and musical enough to be radio rock. I guess there's a space for music like this in between but I don't know if I enjoy it more than anything I would on either side of this proposed spectrum. There's no real single track on here that I thought was particularly great, though as a whole it's a decent listen. The pianos in particular were good from an instrumental side, and I appreciated the enunciation and solid voicing the singer had. I'm not sure i'll ever need to revisit it but it wasn't too bad.

Whimsical and fantastical. Parts were extremely unmemorable though. 3/5

Supertramp occupy an interesting middle ground — more melodically generous than most prog, more musically ambitious than most pop, and ultimately a band that earns respect without quite generating the pull that earns regular rotation. Crime of the Century is their most carefully made record and the one that best makes the case for what they were capable of. The saxophone and keyboard interplay throughout is the genuine highlight. John Helliwell’s sax gives the record a texture that distinguishes it from standard 70s rock, and the dual songwriter/vocalist dynamic between Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson gives the album two distinct voices and personalities that keep things from feeling monolithic. The production is warm and detailed — the wine glass that closes “Dreamer” is exactly the kind of unexpected touch that separates a carefully made record from a merely competent one. Worth noting that “Dreamer” isn’t the track that landed hardest in the US — “Bloody Well Right” was the bigger American hit, its harder guitar edge translating better to radio than the more delicate falsetto of the album’s more famous track. Both work on their own terms. Still, for all the craft and care on display, this sits at arm’s length. A respectful three — appreciated without being felt, admired without being reached for.

Day885 - i would rate a supertramp greatest hits album five stars but this one with one and a half good songs is more for the supertramp superfan

A good album but not great. 5.9/10

Diverse with good melodies and big musicality. 3

Needs another listen. Unexpected

kyl määä ihan tykkäsin tästä ja meni mukavasti autossa ajelumusana.

Ihan pirtee tuotos, jossa on lisänä vähän kiemuraa ettei käy tylsäks. Isoimmat näiden "hitit" taitaa löytyä muilta levyiltä, mutta oisko tää sit jotain ehyintä kokonaisuutta. Perusvarma.

This one feels a lot darker than my memory of Breakfast in America. Some of it feels like it's repeating its own ideas a little too much ( I don't know how to phrase this) but I like it. 'School' is fantastic.

Great production and some great songs, but they do too much.

Very supertrampy. Fun, campy, over the top at times, wailing. Pretty decent, some stretching, some don't land.

318/1089 on track 1 i was already quite digging the vibe but then i got to the piano breakdown and i love that so much. what a fun and interesting turn THE ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE SONG IS ON THIS ALBUM?! iconicccc this was a fun listen. School was the standout for me followed by Dreamer and Rudy 60/100

Some nice melodic moments, including dreamer. Also liked bloody well right. But not a huge fan of some of these long form songs.

Supertramp is a band I’ve under appreciated for many years. Listening to this entire album gave me the opportunity to look at them in a different light. All the elements of a talented group prevail - terrific musical arrangement, strong vocals and a variety of good listening variation.

My rating 3.0 Nothing offensive

Crime of the Century is an enjoyable piece of prog with some phenomenal highlights. For me, though, Breakfast in America is much more suited to my taste, it's a shame it isn't on the list. The middle of the album is a slight let down compared to how it starts and ends, but it's nothing too detrimental to the entire experience. Favourite track: School

Classic 3.5/5

Another ok album in the prog rock genre. Although although it doesn't have the grand scale of pink floyd or the complexity of rush. I'd even prefer to listen to genesis for their folkiness.

Familiar with the band but not the album. It is quite good which isn't surprising, it feels familiar because of the style which is pretty iconic. Underappreciated band I think.

I think “Breakfast in America” is a better and more iconic album but this was a solid listen

Supertramp made a good album with this one but it doesn't have any power songs comparable to the Logical Song. Then again, no real stinkers, very consistent!

It's ok

some good songs on this

Alright album. Some of the songs weren't available on YouTube Music, but I still listened to the ones there. Probably Crime Of The Century is my favorite out of all of the tracks. 5.3/10

groovy! really liked bloody well right and crime of the century

School - 3/5 Bloody well right - 3/5 Hide in your shell - 3/5 Asylum - 2/5 Dreamer - 2/5 Rudy - 2/5 If everyone was listening - 2/5 Crime of the century - 3/5

Ho hum pop rock.

Pretty great record. Love this seventies sound. Dreamer obviously a highlight. I actually gave it more stars cos their song the logical song came on after and that really is an all time classic. Not on this record, but still

This was okay. An inferior Pink Floyd.

interessant

Some ok, some ick. Don't always care for the vocals

Fun album

it's the one with dreamer on it.

Nothing really wrong with it but nothing memorable about it either

ok yeah its ok 3.5/5

bit inspired by the bealtes yet giving it their own touch but also somehow forgetable

They're talented but this album doesn't move me. I prefer Supertramp when they're less prog rock, i.e., Breakfast in America. 6/10

Bloody Well Right

Love the prog/pop sound, but give me that 3 track run in Breakfast In America over this any time

A good chunk of this was quite interesting and catchy but there were a few songs that didn’t really go anywhere and just dragged a bit Listening to this has probably made me more interested in listening to breakfast in America though 3.5

Supr strutty

I tried really hard and could not make this make an impression on me.

I have already listend to this album! I enjoyed Supertramp a lot more than I thought it would their style feel unique and captivating to me. I would easily prefer breakfast and America over this album tho 3/5

Not much of a fan of this - The Who / Pink Floyd passed through a soft rock filter. Gets an extra point for the piano & saxophone outro of the title track, that was a lovely two minutes.

I’m not a prog rock fan so this was never going to be a massive hit with me, but I found it more listenable than other albums in the genre. It definitely has more of a pop sensibility, which makes it more accessible than others in the genre. But it did still suffer from songs being too long and trying to do too much.

This is an extremely 70s album that attempts to ride the prog and pop horses simultaneously, and overall does a fairly decent job of it, with caveats: most tracks contain some cool ideas, but have so many different sections they end up feeling a bit messy and disjointed. The most successful songs avoid this issue. ‘Bloody Well Right’ is a stand-out, combining hard rock with jazzy elements and anti-authority and class-conscious lyrics. ‘Dreamer’ is another really solid track for being tighter structurally. I can imagine liking this more with further listens, but right now I can’t go beyond 3 stars.

Kinda cheesy, but still pretty fun to listen to. Slightly surprised this would be the choice over Breakfast In America, which I thought was a bigger hit.

A very luscious sound, full of big changes, drama, and a lot of joy for the craft. I had fun, but I felt like I was torn about whether or not these dudes were serious.

6 - AVERAGE

Soft prog-rock blir litt som lunkent vann.

Prog som mangler det lille ekstra. Blir fort dus bakgrunnsmusikk.

No strong feelings.

Great album especially the first and last track were really good.

Supertramp is one of those bands, love their music, whack name, albums I find mwah. Some individual songs will capture me from start to end. And starting with Davies on that keyboard in the first song I think this is it! But then it doesn’t keep my attention entirely throughout the album. It’s a great album to have playing in the background when with friends.

Pretty cool. Didn't realize they were British. I won't hold that against them.

interesting......

Meh. Not huge fan of

A foreshadowing of the theatrics to come, but not itself “it.”

A fun album, like the joyfully vibe and the playful nature of then instrumental 3/5

This album sounded like Peter Frampton listened to a bunch of Pink Floyd and Elton John and decided to make an album of classic prog rock show tunes. That’s as simple as I can describe it, there’s a lot going on musically, it’s quite inventive with its arrangements at times. ‘Bloody Well Right’ was the clear favorite for me, but I didn’t dislike any of the songs on this relatively short album. Unfortunately, I wasn’t in love with any of the other songs either, so I can’t give it more than a high 3/5.

Drie sterren.

It's good, but I feel like they have to have better albums.

Sounded like pretty standard issue 70s prog rock to me. Fine but not a standout.

not my shit

Just ok. A couple of decent songs but overall just average.

I always thought Supertramp was kinda silly/corny. But this isn’t bad. Groovy, rocking, very 70s album if there ever was one.

I can never really make up my mind about Supertramp. I've tried to get into their music a few times - sometimes I enjoy it, and sometimes I don't. On one hand they sound like a generic Frankenstein monster made of all the good (and a few bad) parts of the early 70s. They have nice hooks and catchy songs, but a lot of them are pretty formulaic, with influences ranging from Pink Floyd to The Eagles... On the other hand, they do have some truly inspired moments ; I kind of like the singer, and it's usually well produced and well mixed, which makes for a pleasant listen. Overall, this is a reasonably good prog rock album, but not as original as I remembered from my previous attempts. It's very listenable, but it didn't leave me a strong impression, and I'm not sure I'll come back to it anytime soon. Also, probably not their best album. 6/10

Doesn’t have that all-time, definitive Pink Floyd weight, and it’s clearly not coming from the same ‘60s psych roots either. On paper, sax and high-pitched vocals are usually a no go for me, and Supertramp is exactly the kind of band where a best of often feels like enough. But Crime of the Century is tight, consistent, and pretty much filler-free.

Interesting album overall. It's great if you like Supertramp's style. Kind of a pinnacle album for the. I enjoyed it overall. The title track, "Crime of the Century" was my favorite.

Commercial breakthrough for the band, and our glimpse at what Supertramp had in store for the future. Fun album by a band finding their footing.

2.5. The keyboard playing is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here.

Started off really strong but got pretty forgettable by the end. I always thought Supertramp was a funk band. They are not.

My dad hypes up supertramp occasionally, finally good to hear an album of theirs. It was good but it’s just 70’s rock

In theory, this album has everything I would enjoy: an interesting, artistic prog rock sound. The concept is super unique and only really done by Supertramp. It just doesn't have that same extra thing that I expect from them. I'm sure if I listened to Breakfast in America properly, I would enjoy it more. Dreamer was good, but I'm leaving this album kind of disappointed, as the ceiling was really high.

Overall I liked this

Rudy is favorite song. Nothing stood out, but an easy listen

Some cool stuff in here for sure but wasn’t entirely my vibe

Somewhere between Styx and Paul McCartney

Really cool physiodelic music.

Eccentric, camp and fun. Slightly varied song quality with great production quality

I am thrilled with the atmosphere, the tense build up and dramatic transitions on this album. When the songwriting is at its height (School, Dreamer, Crime of the Century) it all comes together in a compelling package. There’s something stopping me from absolutely loving it, perhaps that I’m a bit cooler on some of the songs than others, but I can’t deny that it’s had much more of an effect on me than a typical listen. Very cool.

Everything on this Supertramp album sounds amazing, the production is impeccable, but i don’t care for a too large portion of the songwriting… low 3

B-tier prog rock

Not sure what to make of this album. Obviously some big hits on here, Right & Dreamer. Other songs don't seem to hit home. Maybe it's the singing and/or piano throughout.

This feels like another big showy band or performance like Rush or Meatloaf.

Rudy itself just made me give this album 3 stars, it’s so great almost like a short movie.

This album can be found discarded in many dollar bins which makes me suspicious of its quality. They seem to be working within some sort of prog rock genre and for the most part pretty much all of these songs are pretty interesting. However there’s a certain blandness that kind of creeps in by the end of the album. I am curious to hear some other albums by them to see how they fare against this one. Something tells me though that they might be one of those bands with one or two great songs per album therefore making a best of compilation the best way to hear this band.

It was too ballady and epic sounding. I just wanted a decent chorus

I enjoyed this more on a second listen through. A fun album for the electric piano enthusiast

A decent prog rock album with some good tracks, but overall a bit meh for me. Highlights: "Bloody Well Right"

Like it 3/5

Familiar with Bloody Well Right and Dreamer, but the rest is a snooze.

Loved the intro to School with the Harmonica but was a little more disappointed when the vocals started. Favorite Songs: Rudy, Dreamer

Very hit or miss some i like and some is ehh

Enjoyable enough!

It's fine. Kind of campy 70s rock.

I’ve always liked Supertramp. They’re unique, they don’t just fall in line with all the other classic rock acts of the era. They certainly keep that vibe going here. They explore some different sounds on this record, such as some funkiness, that I think works out really well. But they still keep their signature sound and everything I love about them.

This album consisted of songs that I either knew every word and every note of or ones I never heard before. Supertramp was so popular when I was a kid, and it seemed like everyone had the Breakfast in America record. It was fun to listen to this from start to finish and hear songs I didn’t know.

Very 70s, but nothing stands out here. Just a mid 70s album.

fun album, more than likely ideal for a summer day with your friends.

buen disco

Very '70s flavored. First song was quite good. Asylum (all 11 minutes or whatever) of it struck me as very Pink Floyd-esque, along with some other bits of songs here and there. That's probably the best song on here but I wished it was shorter.

not bad

Reminded me of The Who at their most proggy. Decent but nothing that seemed that new or different.

perfectly listenable ... but that's about it.

A little more hard edged than other stuff from them that I've heard. It still works. Favorite track: Bloody Well Right

Frankly, the songs are kind of boring. It's not a bad album, but neither is it something I'd listen to again. Just too mid.

feels like I don't get it

School is a strong start that the album doesn't live up to.

It's been forever since I listened to Supertramp. I remember enjoying Breakfast in America when I was in my 20's. This album is completely new to me and I think I only recognize one song on the album. So far it's pretty meh, a bit too soft rock for my taste.

Very 70s and felt like I should be worshipping every second of this but it was kind of just cheesy and not really what I expected? Not sure I’d be desperate to listen to it again but can appreciate some of its qualities. Rating: 3.

Favs: - Bloody Well Right - Crime Of The Century

I'm always torn between whether I should like Supertramp more or less than I do. Some weird ass songs on here but also some smooth 70s AM Gold which is my stock in trade. It's no Breakfast of Champions but it is 3.5 rounded down.

Classic I'm very aware off, but somehow isn't logged in my last.fm. probably listened at a friend's in vinyl

Pretty good album. Listed as Prog Rock - does feel that way. I wasn’t familiar with Supertramp outside of there couple of hits. I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Notable tracks include Bloody Well Right, Asylum, Rudy, If Everyone Was Listening, Crime of the Century.

This was all fine and good (excellent keyboard playing was my highlight despite some weird mixing that made it often sound far away and significantly lower than everything else) HOWEVER WHY WAS THIS ON THE LIST AND NOT BREAKFAST IN AMERICA?????

This is some excellent prog that I simply don't see myself revisiting! Instrumentally, there are numerous *moments* that are phenomenal, but there are just as many passages that feel forgettable. Then there's the singer's boomer-rock accent -- I might be petty, but it grates me just enough that the album falls short of the 4-star! Standouts: School • Dreamer • If Everyone Was Listening

I am not sure what sauce this album is missing, but I cannot abide by Breakfast in America being excluded from this list when it is obviously their best work. This is just missing something. There is a dead zone in the middle of this album and it is strong at both ends. Also, why is the volume level so low?

Some big hits but a lot of meh too

Didn’t give this album a super close listen but reads as a classically solid early 70s Beatlesque record, nothing too crazy or standout but far from disappointing, too. Favorite track: School

Smashing.

"Bloody Well Right", "Dreamer" are the two stand out tracks for me. I like Supertramp but not at album length. Single by single I like them.

I know a few Supertramp songs, but none of the ones on this album. It was good. Nothing blew me away, but it wasn't a chore to listen through.

I definitely had a preconceived notion that Supertramp was an 80s synth pop band. Relieved to be wrong, but this didn’t leave a very lasting impression either. I’ll probably forget I listened to this and go on thinking they’re an 80s pop group.

Quite like the sound of this one. Enjoyed the production. Thought it may not be an actual rock opera, I'd park this with records like Pink Floyd and The Who...there's an exploratory (self-indulgent?) attitude in the music that somehow comes across. For either that or some other mysterious reason I'm not getting swept up on the ride. The song that I was vaguely familiar with ("Bloody Well Right") surprised me with it's non-conventional pop form. I applaud the risk-taking and wish more artist would. Not really my thing, but clearly is for plenty of others. Popular music really has gotten more and more same-y!

It was ok, nothing really stuck.

7 / 10

Prog-pop, fairly interesting. Some nice piano and saxophone interludes.

Pretty solid. Might need to relisten tbh

Man, the days of rock operas. Bring them back.

This album is quite uneven, I don't think that Supertramp are great album makers but some songs just hit hard (school, crime of the century, dreamer). The song's schemes are quite similars. But School, come on... 2.5

There are moments where the album really wows me and gains my attention, only for it to go right back to mediocrity. Not a bad background album and some wow moments.

Good boring prog rock. Breakfast in America clears this so hard we better have that too id much rather listen to that than this. I can see a world where this is someone’s favorite album but it sure isn’t mine.

Though I’m not suddenly a Supertramp superfan, this was undoubtedly better than I was expecting. I didn’t realise this was so early in the 70s and it’s more progrock than the progpop I thought I was in for. I will listen to this again, and that’s about the best I could’ve hoped for. I went from 2 Yes albums to 10 last year, so who knows, maybe I’ll end up with some Supertramp on my shelves.

Mycket underligt men najs typ ändå haha. 5/10

the second best Supertramp album

Kinda lost me after the first two tracks.

Good 70s band, brought back memories

I liked this

all in all some songs are just too long and slow for my taste. Solid album though

Not as pedestrian as expected but unlikely to be a go to album

It’s like if Randy Newman was the lead singer of Pink Floyd.

Not too shabby. I've never listened to an album of theirs and I enjoyed driving around running errands with this on in the background. I probably won't seek it out but if it happens to come on, I won't turn it off. How's that for a review? Standout (that's not Bloody Well Right): Dreamer 02-04-2026

The album tracks are good but forgettable. I was not expecting elements of prog rock. Worth another listen.

Just what I needed. Not my fave of theirs but still Supertramp… 3.5

It's a cool album! Some really interesting themes but it also doesn't take itself too seriously. Would absolutely revisit this. Favourites: School Dreamer If Everyone Was Listening Crime Of The Century

Awesome vocals and piano rock but all the songs on this album sound the same

sounded super 1970s

2/8 bekannt 6,5/10 Beste Songs: dreamer, school, crime of the century

quality rock but not to my liking

Some really interesting ideas and parts but just on the whole found it struggling to find anything like outstanding from it. I'm sure it might just be a personal thing but the album kind of just felt like a lackluster can't buy a thrill and whilst there were interesting parts of songs but nothing that made me stop and really appreciate it. Not a bad album by any means but for me just also nothing amazing personal standouts were "asylum", "school" and "bloody well right"

Western start - perfect who dun it music Slow grind with a wurli organ If a crime series was a musical x vampire

didn't like the first couple songs but then got into it. only listened to about the first half

its ok, nothing special for me

Didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it.

tisane chez alma

I thought it was alright. some of the songs were great

Classic rock.

A high 3 but not a 4

bloody well right!! It's a record that I haven't been exposed to, but I've listened to their Breakfast in America record. I don't think it's as good, but there's a lot to love here. Considering when this came out, 1974, I imagine this was quite the change in direction. It somehow has rock/prog influences while simultaneously being pop? Maybe that's what they were going for? It's a 3.5

3/5 - Somewhere between a 3 and 4. I really liked parts of it that felt really unique and interesting and fun to listen to, but there were multiple songs that I didn't get on with at all

there were one or two brilliant songs but overall not my fave ever album

I liked it a lot. My favorite song was “Hide in Your Shell”.

A good, but I would not consider a great album. My favorite track was the hooks, particularly when the orchestral bits come in on "Crimes of the Century" (even with its politically simpleton lyrics) CRIME OF THE CENTURY is definitely more focused than their first 2 albums. Improved songwriting kept the songs from sprawling quite so often. The subject matter is a bit cynical for my taste. I tend to prefer my prog rock albums to explore the personal, the mythological, the philosophical, but not the overtly political, which is why when I feel like I could go for some prog rock, I typically throw on a Rush record instead, as they tended to have more of the former than the latter. Having said all that, CRIME OF THE CENTURY is a long way off from the perfection of BREAKFAST IN AMERICA, so BIA's absence on this list is baffling. On the positive side, most of Supertramp's 70s records are, in my opinion, more enjoyable than the Genesis records from the same period. Genesis, for me, doesn't in itself become interesting until the 80s, along with all of its members (Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Mike and the Mechanics) solo efforts, which were delightful during the 80s and also suspiciously missing from this list, which I have come to realize after reviewing well over 700 albums, basically sucks with only an occasional bright spot.

Classic alright album! Like, obviously these guys are good and know what they’re doing and I know for some people this shit works for them. And I never hated this album, I just wasn’t super invested in it. It’s fine!

Heard Before? - Yes, too many times, unfortunately. Notes: This list has WAY too many guitar albums for my taste, so it's nice to hear some decent keyboard work, even if it is on yet another overplayed classic rock thing. Production is lovely: drums have that wonderful 70s sound, vocals aren't too loud. The arrangements make the best of the individual talents of the members, even when the songwriting fails to deliver. Verdict: Prog-pop for normies. Still more interesting than most of classic rock radio, with deep cuts that are worth your time. Listen Again? Probably, but not for a long time.

Grand, theatrical.

These guys sure know how to build to the big sing-along chorus. Surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

Had never heard Hide In Your Shell before. Loved it!

started off strong but lost me in the end.

3.5/5. Enjoyed this

Nothing special but an enjoyable watch.

Supertramp is one of those "whatever happened to" bands. This album is ok. I recognized a couple of hits. Didn't love it.

Not bad at all

Only got partial tracks.

A Proggasm. Progtacular. Progtrocity. Operatic Prog, Rock Prog, Jazzy Prog. Prog. Decent mind.

A case where the principle of the sound I seem too quite like.  They just seem deft at ruining it from time to time.  "Bloody Well Right" is not good and its up and down from there.  Their USP is generating some engaging melody that gives it some real depth, and I really really like that.  Maybe it's the complex layers, but I can imagine this would be good building a scene up in a film.   "Hide in Your Shell" was a glimpse at getting the vocals to match the drama and even went Elton John like in the middle with some interesting piano moodiness. Ultimately not bad at all and I listened to this loads as background (it was short).  Ironically the songs I knew are the sole reason why I only gave this a 3 and I also liked it way more than expected and included some excellent songs.

I've decided to rate everything subjectively rather than objectively as these all have plenty of critic ratings out there. This is of course a super solid classic rock album, excellent mastering and dynamics, big impact. Down a star simply because for me it's a bit of a slog style wise outside Bloody Well Right, Asylum and the title track. Was a good listen though and it had been a long time since I'd heard it.

6.5/10

Gostei.

This was ok, but I didn't love it. (3)

Good but not something I'd add to my rotation and I'm not super keen to listen to more from this artist.

Feels like if I ran a Merry-Go-Round and wanted to use 70’s themed music, I’d pick this. Can’t imagine coming back to this much but it isn’t the worst.

All of the songs blended and felt like one unit to me, which enjoyed. The one that jumped out was Dreamer. It sounded louder and a tad different- it was also the one song I knew before listening to the album. I enjoyed the sound, and I like Supertramp.

I liked the album. It sounded amazing but it felt like it was missing something. Like it was really close and then it just didn’t find it.

This was very very good. It sucks youtube music only has part of the album available, but someone else just uploaded the entire album as a video and I just listened to that. Very cool album. Really into it.

If the ratings were more granular this is probably between a 3 and 4 I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, but it was stilly a really fun art rock/rock and/or roll record. I preferred the straight up rock moments more than the more artsy moments, which I wouldn't have expected. I found some of the longer songs dragged as the arrangements weren't interesting enough to justify the length. Still a bunch of really good stuff on here.

Eh, boring mostly.

Supertramp is so engrained in me from my years of working a terrible retail job where Supertramp played so much. Bloody Well Right and Dreamer take me right back to the days of restocking adult diapers in a drug store. Glory days. Liked Tracks: Dreamer

I never confuse supertramp with supergrass. Bloody well right. Dreamer is under appreciated

Good, but prog rock isn't my thing

Fine, but kind of boring (adequate but slow)

070126 11:06 3.5

Somewhat contemplative, classic pop-rock

superrrr underrated again another album i havent heard any songs from before! i love this genre/ type of music its so unique in my opinion

four in the morning and im zoning

Lwk I’d listen to a few songs again

Nothing grabbing me but fun

Trippy

Cool funky album, recognised dreamer but didn't realise how many tunes this band had (logical sign etc)

Great album

I feel like I should like this album, but I just didn't.

A uniquely 70s prog rock sound with a couple big hits. Not bad.

I hear the prog rock. It’s okay. There are so many different things I hear as I listen to I hear some Bowie as I listen some Elton John and it all kind of works. I knew the name Supertramp more than I knew the music. Is it my favorite? No. Is it good? yes. I’m not going to add it to my playlist though. I’m glad I heard it.

quietLOUDquietLOUD for the love of god just set your volume in a certain range and let me actually listen to a song without being unable to hear or having my ears blown out by the sudden volume shift. Dreamer is obviously an absolutely killer song but also not that especially different to anything else on the album. This left me somehow both bored while craving more?

188/1001 :: Supertramp - Crime of the Century Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: 6 Listen before you die: No I’m pretty sure that if you looked up “70’s Rock” in the dictionary there’d be a picture of this album cover starring back at you. I didn’t love it but didn’t hate it. Some of it was pretty cool but also felt like it ran long. My guess is if I was in a rock band this would be good reference material…

Like if Elton John wrote musical about the Beatles

A very nice easy listening progressive rock album. The keyboard is a main stand out in a lot of the songs, setting the tone for most the album as uplifting, but with heavy guitar riffs from time to time keeping it engaging & interesting. I also love the way the bass builds slowly in ‘Dreamer’, it’s a perfect display of prog rock. I think the production value of this album is what makes it stand out so much to me. Whether this album is for you or not, you could not argue that it doesn’t sound absolutely spot on. It’s laughable how British they sound in ‘Bloody Well Right’. Favourite tracks are: ‘School’, ‘Bloody Well Right’, & ‘Dreamer’.

High production value and catchy songs that are fun

I always forget how much I like Supertramp. This was a good listen and a good reminder to play more of their music.

This is standard 1970s Supertramp, Including the hits “Bloody Well Right” and “Dreamer”. Those are good tracks which we all heard on the radio, while the remainder of the album was decent but not memorable. Let’s give it a solid three stars.

Space rock? :D? I know this is a famous band, but I've only ever heard 'Goodbye Stranger' before (not on this album). They're OK. Kind of a Pink Floyd/Queen/Don McLean hybrid. A little bit guitar-heavy for my preference. Highlight: 'Hide in Your Shell' (nice horns)

The songs are overlong and it's a bit schlocky, but boy did I enjoy myself. Love the instrumentation in particular. Considered going up to 4 stars with this, but couldn't get all the way there.

Almost great but not quite

Enjoyed but one or two of the songs a bit long.

Have heard of this band, but hadn't heard any of these songs before.

I had this record and didn't really listen to it, felt like something you needed in your collection but didn't really need to listen to. I think their other one is bigger and better but this is fine, a couple of bangers and some filler, nothing special

Narrative elements felt a little clunky, but the songs within them grow to a nice climax. More familiar with prog bands like ELO and Genesis from this era. El Dorado from the same year is one of my favorite albums and has a much smoother flow. That said, some of the driving rock and funk from the second half of this album is undeniable. Had me moving without thinking.

Put this off because I enjoyed Breakfast in America. Enjoyed Bloody Well Right, Rudy and some others but a 3.5 on the lower half seems fair.

I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Pink Floyd-inspired dollar-bin prog rock. The first half of the album delivered for me, with some powerful riffing and the frenetic medleys you’d expect from a band with too much studio time. “Bloody Well Right” has everything I could want from this record. However, things started to fall apart in the second half, which offers much less charm or inspiration. Maybe it felt like they were reaching too much for FM glory, or maybe that’s just how long it takes for me to get tired of hearing a Wurlitzer.

Couldnt finish as some songs were unavailable on soundcloud, youtube, tbh i couldnt be bothered to search more 5/10, dead in the middle

++: Bloody Well Right, Asylum, Rudy, If Everyone Was Listening +: Hide in Your Shell, Dreamer +-: School, Crime of the Century 7,0/10

Honestly this was very good BUT nothing more really. Just a good standard 70s pop album sooo 3/5

I like Supertramp. Songs like "The Logical Song", "Give A Little Bit" and "Breakfast In America" are exemplary tracks that inspired a new generation. This album however, is just not for me. Listenable, but a bit dull. Sorry folks.

Just learned that Super Tramp had a dutch millionaire support them and that's cool.

Długie utwory, bez polotu i porządnego hooka. Nie wiem, chyba tak brzmi przeciętność. 5/10

Not what I remember Supertramp to sound like. I liked the sound of a few of the songs: Rudy was an interesting and kind of funk-y song, and Crime of the Century was pretty good too, I really liked the piano. School and If Everyone was Listening also weren't bad. Listening to Bloody Well Right was just weird, because their music sounds incredibly American and now I know that they're not. sooo weird. 3/5 stars.

7.5/10 pretty good

Never heard of album or band. Had started a review but didn’t save so quick recap: like school but the sound engineering is very off. Way to quiet at random points. I like bloody well a lot end to end. Hide in your shell is fine but not great. Asylum is awesome, good lyrics set to great orchestration. 100% have heard dreamer. Absolute classic. No notes. Rudy is very well written, guitar solo at 2 mins is great. Middle is kind of uneccesary, seems like a time filler. But then 430 on is great, love the build up but sounds like a completely different song. Not necvasarily a bad thing. I like the piano and flute a lot on “listening” beyond that just an average song. Title track is a great ender, feels like a culmination of the whole album. Some elements similar to the rest of the songs but Also feels like the last song. Pleasantly surprised as a whole, I think I need to give this another listen in the future. 3.2 stars.

Yes, cool! Will have to revisit sometime.

Heard Breakfast in America before. This album is way better, not really "wow" but better than their more famous one 3/5

Enjoyable but not all that memorable.

did not like it too much, did not finish listening.

It was alright, not as good as some other stuff of theirs I've heard though.

Album #988 Sort of theatrical, piano driven rock. No super big hits on this one. I've heard Bloody Well Right before. It sounds Pink Floyd-ish, and maybe Dreamer. Interesting, but still not really that engaging to me. Favorite track: Bloody Well Right

Not amazing but also interesting enough. I’m not sure it truly warrants its place as an essential listen but I did enjoy the last track.

This veered from some of the worst excesses of prog (eg. ‘Yes’) to what were actually some decent moments. I liked the start (is that a Morricone sample?) and ends of the album but it descended into prog wankery about halfway through which soured it a little for me.

Sort of dreadful irritants, but equally hard to truly dislike. They're like if Roxy Music had a tiny ounce of charm. The highlight, for me, is Dreamer, which was on a mixtape we used to have in the car when I was a kid, called Goodies To Order, made by my uncle. It is a lifelong goal of mine to recreate that tape as a playlist, but I reckon I can only remember around 45% of the songs. Anyway, Dreamer was one I couldn't quite place until today, so thank you Project for that.

Listened before 03/05/2020 & 09/09/2023 Solid enough record

first track nice rest is not

Some great bops, but a bit inconsistent

Not a bad album, but Breakfast in America is much more consistent and has a wider range of styles. It should have made this list instead.

I've always found Supertramp to be a bit goofy. They straddle a line somewhere between art pop and prog with mostly successful results. But are not shy about introducing weird instruments, carnival sounds, and otherwise goofy elements. The contents of this album are no different, though I will say I'm surprised to see this one instead of Breakfast in America, from which most of their regular radio hits were generated. All in all this album was just fine to my ear. I enjoyed Bloody Well Right and Dreamer as individual tracks. Asylum felt a little bit like something that could have made it onto Pink Floyd's The Wall (albeit "brighter" in tone). Not an album I plan to go back to... Soft 3 for me.

Interesting! Pretty entertaining storytelling, and interesting music to go along with it. Listened while running.

Forgettable

3.1/just some dudes trying to make prog rock i guess?

Like a more animated Pink Floyd. I can picture the band in my mind's eye as I listen and I don't like what I see but I like what I hear (mostly). Proggy, psychy, poppy but not tedious.

This is fine.

Okay, not great. Supertramp has one song I love: Goodbye Stranger. It's not on this album. I like a lot of individual passages and parts of songs, but most of the songs have flaws (e.g. the chorus of bloody well right) that undermine them.

3/5 - I guess I'd describe this as prog-lite, which I'm OK with. I like the keyboard sounds and general pop sensibilities of the songs. I'm not going to have a Supertramp ephiphany, but I'll take some "Bloody Well Right" now and again. This choice for the 1,001 betrays the heavy British bias of the list.

Remember in The Office when Andy writes that song from the perspective of the little girl? That’s what “School” reminded me of. This was a cool album. I’m not sure I’ve ever listened to Supertramp before. More rock bands should have full bands; the keyboard and horns add a lot I think.

Loved the instrument variety in this in. The sax section on bloody well right was great. Title song seemed like quite the grand composition

Surprisingly proggy, but not to a degree that would scare off most casual listeners. Tightly packaged and very well performed. Very very 70s.

Decent musicians but boring British rock rock to me

Good album, 1 or 2 very good songs

I hadn't heard anything from this album before, but I was familiar with Supertramp's other work. There are a couple of songs that have that "waka-chicka" sound that we all associate with disco and the 70's. Good album all the way through, but not really notable. There's a reason this one didn't get a lot of radio play. My Rating: 3/5 jail cells

While generally appreciated, could've done with more BLOODY WELL RIGHT and DREAMER styled songs to break apart from the Atlantic City background music. Style of music a Divorced Boomer listens to while drinking Chivas and soda.

The songs I knew about really stood out. But the rest of the album is still solid and fun. 3.5/5

Again, heard the band but not familiar with the album… …nice alt sound after a few predictable albums. Nice atmosphere and phases. Can sound a touch empty. Missing a bit of depth and bass, but nice progressions. A kind of watered down Jethro Tull? And nothing quite as English as “you’re bloody well right” Alternative enough but still lacking something that wows or is particularly inspiring. Had high hopes, but kinda didn’t deliver or go anywhere, really. Feels like “nice idea, shame about the finish.” But still prefer it to predictable structure and lack of originality.

Lindo!

Corny and fun, my favorite moments made me want to listen to Pink Floyd instead

Proggy and poppy

Some solid tunes. Including moments that were silly and bombastic and full of 70s flair that elicited some eye rolls, but I’d still revisit it.

Nothing really stands out as amazing on this album, but all in all it's a pleasant listening experience, good music, good vocals, great production. I enjoyed it.

I was 16 when this album came out and the annoying Bloody Well Right played incessantly on the radio. I’m not a big fan of most progressive rock, but this album did make it more accessible. I mostly appreciate this album for the hooky song Hide in Your Shell if I ignore the incredibly pessimistic and negative lyrics which were not representative of anybody I knew at that time.

very long songs but the drama level (usually) keeps it interesting "i'm just as sane as anyone" highlights: school dreamer hide in your shell if everyone was listening (clarinet bit)

I kinda admire Supertramp for being really hard to pin down. Like, what genre are they? Power pop? Soft boy glam? Post-Beatles? This album did not have many standout tracks, but it's so uniquely characterful I'm giving it a three. Something tells me that three stars might be Supertramp's glass ceiling - perhaps we'll find out in the next two and half years.

that was a fun musical journey - these guys were the sh. when we were kids, it was nice to be reminded
