Reviews (page 8 of 14)
Not my favourite RHCP album. The highs are very high, but there are some very low lows here too
As a kid I had a bit of a phobia of blood, even the mention of it was a bit triggering. As a 12-yeae-old when this came out, I also knew what sex was, though it was also a taboo topic. Sp an album promising both blood and sex was a little dangerous sounding to me; the sugar and the magic I could handle. I like the odd RHCP song but listening to this now it strikes me that they listened to Grand Funk Railroad's "We're an American Band" and based there whole career on replicating that but with funkier baselines. Few of the songs are alright and I do like I Could Have Lied.
the singles off this album are like, the water i grew up swimming in. the rest of the songs on the album are what i expected and i didn't strongly feel the neeeeeed to hear them but hey, now i can pedantically correct a friend that it's demons, plural. demons.
On one hand, this record has some of the best music the Chilis have ever written. On the other, it is too long for its own good. I also find Anthony Keidis' lyrics to be very hit and miss, he has always been my least favorite part of the band. Shave 10-15 minutes off of this and this would be remembered alongside the likes of Pearl Jam's Ten as on of the seminal rock albums of the 90s. As it is, it's just a step below. 3.5
I was surprised that it was trending at 4 for the first half but then half way through he started singing about sitting on a pile of beans....
Previously rated: #681 - Californication *************************** Album #1,047 The music is so good, especially bass drums -- just so funky, but I really dislike that sex fiend rap-shouting vulgarity in my face. When he's not doing that (Under the Bridge), it's really great. I don't remember Californication being this way. Low 3/5.
classic
Would like to see RHCP live, but not fussed by listening to an album the whole way through, especially one as long and repetitive as this one. Lyrically saying some alright stuff but so on the nose. There are some very cool breakdowns, but few and far between, too much Kiedis overall. And they took the best thing out of funk, brass, and replaced it with more guitar. Fucking losers. Gave up with last couple songs, was a bit too much - hopefully I didn't miss their samba era 6 / 10 Best track/s: Under the Bridge, Mellowship Slinky
I like RHCP :)
I personally think RHCP suck but at least they're unique. I'd rather listen to unique things I don't enjoy than 100 more shitty generic britpop albums.
3.5
Aika perus, ehkä vähän tylsä. Aika tasa RHCPtä 🤷🏻♀️
4# even though i own a red hot tshirt for years and been into one of their concerts, i've never made a deep dive into them and heard this album. I just listened to californication and The Getaway at full. Was always a big fan but not all of the songs captivate me. They have a lot of bangers. What drives me to them is the catchiness of the vocals by Anthony Kiedis, the riffs and the whole feel to it, their carefree sound. About this album in specific. They rock, but a bit rough. Well, if the year that they made this is in consideration, than yeah, it's a wonderful feat. I can hear Rage against the machine here (Suck My Kiss), but they haven't released their first album yet so i guess they were inspired by this.
Blood? Sugar? Sex? Magik? In this economy??? Idk it was fine maybe 2.5
i do not think i fuck with rhcp. this album felt like a 3/5 with a 5/5 single
Ganz ok Rock. 3.
Там у человека что-то болит Не особо интересный альбом Звучит хорошо и разнообразно Хитов не много
Highlights here are obvious. Starts off very political which isn’t my thing, and it’s quite long. Def a breakout album for them but far from my favorite.
Quite an enjoyable album. At its best the combo of rock, funk, and rap works really well, with Give It Away the iconic example. There are some slower tracks too that give it some variety. There are tracks where it doesn’t blend quite as well though (especially early on) and it’s much too long. Truely a 3.5 or 7/10 if I could give it that.
Couple of great tracks. The rest is just ok
3/5
I was ready to hate on this for the bro band that they eventually became, but this has some catchy tracks. The lyrics are really dumb though. And less than half the songs really that catchy.
Would be 4/5, but that would require throwing 1/3 of the album away. Banger, but too long and repetitive.
Funky, edgy, but also (sometimes) catchy - see these guys creating something new in real time
So dumb, but so many memories.
Heard it before. I do like RHCP but I know people who are way bigger fans than me. Who doesn't like a bit of silly fun with Anthony Kiedis saying god knows what. My only complaint about this album is that it's just too long, there are way too many tracks here that I just don't care about, especially towards the end 3/5
3/5 good album but some songs wer enot my type as i listen to more intense music per say
This is probably in my biggest 50/50 on any album on this list so far. Like I always thought RHCP was super overrated and over played. And being a millennial gives me the right to be sick to death of this fucking band. For as long as I can remember they have been EVERYWHERE and their music is EVERYWHERE. You just could not escape this band for the majority of my life, and couple that with how much I think Anthony Keadis comes across like a pretentious douchebag and you start to understand my hate towards RHCP. But with all that biased hate towards them I don’t say lightly that this is probably their best album. It’s super well rounded, it still has a lot of the charm and edgy sound of mother’s milk without becoming too mainstream pop like Californiacation. This album reminds me why I like mother’s milk so much, they had this genuinely really unique sound with flea and Chad Smith is also a totally treasure on this album. There nothing really to dislike about this album, except for Anthony of course, but it’s still in the grand scheme of things only an acceptable to good album, not great.
I quite like the sound of RHCP as a teenager in the 90s and I am still ok with it today. The thing is that this album would be much better if it was 30 minutes shorter and wouldn't contain at least 6 songs. The CD era albums were simply getting too long in the 90s and this album suffers from it. It's good funk rock with distinctive sound, and I like Under the Bridge and Give it Away the most. But overall I don't like it as much as I would want to.
Never got into the Chili Peppers really. This was OK, I guess.
Not my favourite chillies album, feel the songs are hit or miss. Flea’s bass was funky on a lot of the songs, big fan of that
3.5
Decent, but felt there was filler
Real mixture of really good famous tracks and ones that aren’t that great, love some tracks but won’t be listening to the whole album again.
This album has some bangers, but also some duds.
Too long
My teacher in high school liked RHCP way too much in general, it was a great album with funky guitar and horniness.
didn't enjoy as much as anticipated.. might need to retrying?
It was okay, just not the biggest RHCP fan and I knew some of the songs already and they’re ones I don’t love. Eg. Suck my Kiss
사실 안들음 ㅋㅋ
Good early peppers.
There were moments where I was really grooving, but overall it’s not to my taste. Talking to some friends, it was an important album at the time. Under the Bridge was the only song I rated above three stars.
almost done 🤞
Sonidos bastante instrumentales con una ambientación más explícita. Temas más generales y rudos. Letras simples, voces fuertes y sonidos generalmente bien trabajados, en conjunto un álbum bien estructurado y divertido de escuchar.
i mean, yeah its a rock album. some fun songs but nothing too special. i had fun with it. will i revisit? probably not. i liked about 3-4 of the songs.
not really my jam.
Best Track - "Under The Bridge"
7.5 / 10
Hard to rate. There's a few good songs on here like "Suck My Kiss" "Give It Away" and "Under the Bridge" but I wouldn't say the rest is amazing, merely okay, like "Breaking The Girl" and "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" and some are actively bad, like "Apache Rose Peacock"
C'était pas trop trop mal mais je reste un peu déçu malgré les classiques fournis
only added one song to my keeper list that i already knew but i wasn't bored listening to the rest of the album!
Red hot chili peppers are usually not my cup of tea but I do enjoy them. Sometimes it feels quite repetitive even when albums change. I'm a bass lover so of course I enjoyed the bass. I liked how it's about excesses in life but also the loneliness and unhappiness that might come with it, as some songs feel more "outrageous" and funky and other much more reflective and communicate some sort of pain. Anyway, some absolute bangers in this album that bring me back to childhood.
I like some of their songs but I don’t typically want to listen to a whole album from them in one sitting.
Puh, auch a bissl fad. Bin nicht so der große funk-rock Fan. Highlights: Under the Bridge, get it away, breaking the girl Low: Castle made of sand Jimi Hendrix Cover Produktion: Die Drums klingen ziemlich gut. Die funky Gitarre ist manchmal a bissl alleine und bräuchte Unterstützung. Der Bass macht eh viel, aber bald wo anders.
This was honestly a pretty mid album, the songs all kinda blended together for me. My favorite tracks were Under the Bridge and The Greeting Song.I probably wouldn’t listen to this again, the album felt like it was a little too long personally.
Some good, classic songs like Under The Bridge and Give It Away which I've always liked. But my god is it difficult listening to these lyrics from a self-admitted nonce. I really wanted this album to end about 30 minutes sooner than it did.
love rhcp. liked this album more than i expected. fun and upbeat nothing too special.
Great musicianship all around on this one. Under the bridge stands out and it’s no wonder why it’s still a classic and one where Keidis actually shines through. Other than that, Breaking the Girl is the only other track that really stuck with me. Unfortunately my old favorite from Rockband 2, Give It Away, didn’t hold up for me. Favorite songs: Under The Bridge, Breaking The Girl
Fun… but loads of nonsense mixed in
I loved this album in college, but hadn't listened to it in a long time. How many songs does Anthony need to sing about his dick? Ugh, it's just gross now.
3/5 - RHCP just not for me, I like their popular stuff but not everything
There are Chilis albums I like a lot more than this one but there are absolutely some bangers of songs on this
Strong highs and lows. Fun hits I’d come back to and then a lot of painful filler.
For me, there’s a fine line between the masterpiece of Beck’s Midnite Vultures and this. This album lacks the charming absurdism that makes Midnite Vultures feel like social commentary instead of an unwanted window into someone’s sex life. The hits are good, but the rest is not.
Good listen, but mostly ok-ish songs by RHCP
Very funky to say the least. I think it was a bit too long, though, and got a bit repetitive for my taste. Under the Bridge and Give It Away are classics, though, and probably the best songs on the album. Favorite Track: Give It Away
Never loved rhcp but pretty good album
Listened Before: No I REALLY want to like this but Anthony Keidis's voice bugs me, especially the rock-rapping. It's fine when he sings. Flea's basslines are badass. Fought for my life to get into it but just ehhhh
A few great songs amidst many mediocre ones.
Overall Rating - 3.41/5 (6.82/10). I knew a couple of the tracks on this album. Never really listened to RHCP in my youth, but they're not bad.
I remember liking this better. Too many useless songs. A few atrocious ones, including Sir Psycho Sexy and Apache Rose Peacock.
funk powered rock that mixed tenderness with a driving groove that hit you right between the eyes
I think I've settled on the RHCP being a great band dragged down by a bad front man. Kiedis can't sing and he can't rap. The rest of the band holds it down the whole album.
bloated album. some great tunes on there but it needed an editor!
Didn’t realize how much I prefer their later stuff.
Blood Sugar? low. Sex? yes please. Magik? mid.
I wanted to like this so much more, based on the handful of songs from the album that are in my rotation. This is not a top 3 RHCP album.
Nice album to have on in the background. Very relaxing while still having some tempo and energy. I Could Have Lied surprised me the most hearing it for the first time. I don't like Give It Away that much, very interesting that it's the song with the second-most listeners. It's maybe the worst track on the record, hearing the title track after was a welcome change. Hearing probably the best guitar intro after that was even better. The songs that come last are not really worth mentioning but not bad either.
Buen álbum, pero no lo que busco en estos momentos
Consistently freaky throughout as expected. Giving dive bar and 50 year old men named Steve. Not the vibe for 7 am like I chose. Title track and Under the Bridge are my picks!
I just don’t love this. The hits are ubiquitous, between them is filler. It’s a distinctive sound I just struggled through it.
The Power of Equality - 3/5 If You Have to Ask - 2/5 (bass sounds great, otherwise not very enjoyable) Breaking the Girl - 4/5 Funky Monks - 3/5 Suck My Kiss - 5/5 I Could Have Lied - 3/5 Mellowship Slinky in B Major - 2/5 The Righteous & the Wicked - 4/5 Give It Away - 5/5 Blood Sugar Sex Magik - 3/5 Under the Bridge - 5/5 Naked in the Rain - 2/5 Apache Rose Peacock - 3/5 The Greeting Song - 3/5 My Lovely Man - 3/5 Sir Psycho Sexy - 1/5 They're Red Hot - 3/5 Average score: 3.2/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ growing up is realizing Anthony Kiedis was (and still is) an insufferable fucking creep there's a handful of fun and/or notable tracks here, but more often than not Kiedis is just hootin' and hollerin' about sex. it really is a shame, cuz the instrumentation from every other band member is superb (especially from Flea and John Frusciante). those two really are the saving grace of the group, and the only reason i'd ever willingly play their albums best tracks: Under the Bridge, Give It Away, Suck My Kiss honorable mention: Breaking the Girl (i liked that one quite a bit as a teen)
Zadne cajte mam ful močan odpor do RHCP, tko da... Bom probala bit objektivna. Sm jih pa včasih kar poslušala, tko da mam solidno predznanje komadov. + 73 minut? Resno?! Všeč mi je začetk albuma ("The Power of Equality"). Ok, nasledn je ful rap ("If You Have to Ask"). "Suck My Kiss" je na žalost še vedno dobr komad. Isto "Give It Away". Pa "Under the Bridge". Pa "Naked in the Rain". Po se morš prebit skoz 8 minutni "Sir Psycho Sexy", zato da je poj po dobri minuti Robert Johnson coverja končno konc albuma. Isto k včer: nizka ⭐⭐⭐
My long review just got wiped out and it’s late. So I will just say that it’s too long, and the profanity is a bit over the top…but I still enjoyed it for the most part. Three stars.
A pleasant first listening, but I don't get the energy I usually get from a rock album. Not bad by any means just not so high for my taste 3/5
Typical RHCP songs, mostly all ready heard by the time I was assigned this album. Nothing horrible, nothing mind-blowing either.
Some variation but looong
There's some really good songs on this album. Under The Bridge is a brilliant, desolate song and Give It Away contains endless fabulous riffs. But 17 tracks is a lot to maintain consistency, and although there are other notable high points (Breaking the Girl, Suck My Kiss) there's too much bland in there. If songs like Apache Rose Peacock and Sir Psycho Sexy weren't on it, it might have pushed up towards 4 stars, but it'll have to settle for a middling 3.
3.5 - a mix of iconic songs with some forgettable ones
Not exactly the vibe I usually go for, liked it but wouldn't listen to often Favourite song: If you have to ask
I quite like this album, I’m giving it 3/5 stars. I loooove the bass in every song and I would 100% play this album again. I’ve added a fair few songs to my playlist - my faves are Apache Rose Peacock, Give It Away and The Righteous & the Wicked. I do dislike that it is so long and at times I feel like some songs blur into one.
hits were still good, decent variety, pretty good sound, little long, alright listen
Truly enjoyed most of this album whenever Kiedis wasn't vocalizing. The tight guitar, funky bass, and varied rhythm showcase the talent and skill of these musicians, and it's a shame that Kiedis detracts so much from this otherwise enjoyable music. Breaking the Girl remains an underrated song and the only RHCP track I enjoy.
Bit of a mixed bag - funky and some nice musical interplay but it’s pretty long and there’s a few misses. Antony can get a little annoying sometimes
its ok
I really love this song named under the bridge, as same as the lead vocal I also living in a big city for almost seven years. When I listened this song, I remembered my college life and my girlfriend.
Didn’t like this as much as some of the other Chilli Peppers songs I’ve heard, but it began to pick up further in.
I'm bored with this album since I listened to it a lot when it came out
I would take any of their four previous albums to this one. It has its moments but the zest is missing.
Classic RHCP sound/riffs and excellent instrumentals, overall average though. Fav Tracks: Under the Bridge > Give it Away > I Could Have Lied
I mean there is definitely some good iconic songs on the album but that's about it. Almost felt like I had the same song on repeat for over an hour.
Liked it when I was younger. They're weird now though aren't they.
Funk Punk Rock. The first actually good album these guys made. 3.5/5. It's not as good as By the Way, though. I will give it only 3 ,because of how long it is. It should have ended after Under the Bridge.
Mixed bag to me; some terrific tracks but also some in my estimation bad music.
The behind-the-scenes story is better than most of the songs. A few undeniable gems, but I prefer the myth of this album to the album itself.
I think my main problem with RHCP is the same problem I have always had with them: that when they make a good song it is usually something spectacular, but when you get into their b-sides a lot of it feels the same, overindulgent, meandering nonsense. Kiedis spews out half formed scat sounds in a vain attempt to upstage the spectacular talent of Flea all with really interesting guitar melodies pushed firmly into the background because how could they not be when some idiot is slobbering gibberish into a microphone? The singles off this album are superb, there is no denying that. When Kiedis sings in tracks like "Breaking the Girl" and "Under the Bridge" you can almost see why he is the front man. And then there is no denying the sheer sonic power of Flea and Frusciante on songs like "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss". But the rest of the tracks, which is an astounding 15 don't ever seem to come close to the kind of envelope pushing, experimental, or melodious heights of the singles. And the fusion that they are famous for is not even new. Parliament Funkadelic, The Soft Boys, Zappa, Primus, Faith No More, Living Colour, all toyed with these kinds of sounds. I am going to begrudgingly give this a 3 based on the singles and this albums influence on music in the 90s. But if you need any proof to yourself that this band is as uneven as Kiedes is a douche, then think to yourself about your favorite song off of "Mother's Milk"--that isn't a Stevie Wonder cover--or off of the album between this one and Californication (yes, they had one! I too was surprised) titled "One Hot Minute". Mike Patton forever, Mr. Bungle forever, baba-booey baba-booey
Tonally kind of all over the place? But man, the bangers do bang.
eh
I remember loving this as a kid. Especially Breaking The Girl. Obviously has some big tunes but signs already there of future funk freakout posturing. Not sure how much I love it now. Under The Bridge obviously the best song on here.
It's their best one.
album typu amerykański film z przełomu wieków
en iyi albümleri değil
I'm shocked, SHOCKED, that this album doesn't totally suck.
I have very specific memories from high school related to this album. I had a friend who liked them and this conjures detailed memories of sleepovers at his house. He played Mother’s Milk a lot, and then this came out and changed their trajectory. I don’t really like RHCP, but I will give anyone props that is able to make a durable life in music while being this unusual. Why don’t I like them? Flea and Anthony Kiedis don’t do it for me, and that’s a big part of their identity. Drummer is fine, and I really like John Frusciante’s guitar playing. I rounded up because Give It Away was a milestone music video, legitimately cool and unusual. While I like other songs better, that song would be a good way to summarize what the band does well.
3/5 - I’m being extremely generous because this album belongs on the list given how ubiquitous it was in the 90s, and the musicianship is solid. That said, I loathe Anthony Kiedis’ vocals and pretty much everything about his whole persona. I give him a 1, and Point Break is the classic film it is, because he gets shot in the foot, howls in pain, and exits early. Why is this 73 minutes?
Good playing, and hits are great, but it’s veeeeeery long. 2.5 but I’ll round it up…
I don't believe this is RHCP best work
I remember listening to this when it came out. My buddy and I were just fans of the 80s output (still are) and he said "This album sounds like Red Hots trying to sound like Red Hots." Yeah, it's their 'masterpiece' and yeah it's a classic, but I still don't really like listening to it.
Listenable.
Awesome!
First of all, amazing instrumentals - especially Chad on drums, fantastic playing. There are some great songs on here too, my favorites: Breaking the Girl, I Could Have Lied (what a guitar solo uff) and of course Under the Bridge. Why does it have to be so long though? cut out almost half of it and it could have been a strong 4/5.
What are those albums where the memory of it being great outweighs? The actual reality of it being any good? Three or four? Really good songs the rest of it a little bit chaotic. Did some much better stuff in the early 2000s which is probably their pinical
It’s good and has a few really good songs that get this close to a 4 but I feel it falls short as a majority of other I just don’t like as much.
Meh.
Pfunk. Flea has some sick fucking lines on this Album. Also his tone on some of the tracks is sick
Singles band
Funky beats only get you so far
без негативчика.
Thier best album maybe but it also is bloated with a lot of fat around a few good bones… Parliament Funkadelic they are not.
If I was a teenager I could see thinking this is cool. As it stands this funk-rock comes off too juvenile and thus a bit hard to listen to, particularly with so much of it in one album. However, they clearly know how to write songs (even if they tend to the repetitive side), and the production is super tight and creative (one thing I learned from this project is that I'm a Rick Rubin fan). I think it's very telling that the best songs are not funk-hiphop, but ballads (like Under the Bridge). If only they did more of that.
Nicht mein Sound....
Bin kein großer RHCP Fan. Haben ein paar richtig coole Hits (hier z.B. Under the Bridge) und auch definitiv ihre Daseinsberechtigung auch in den 1001 Alben.
Not a huge fan of the 90s' rock scene however this album was a good listen.
I was shocked to see that this came out in 1991. I’m much more familiar with the Californication brand of the RHCP. Also surprised how much funk there is — this is predominantly a funk album. Frusciante has got to be one of the best guitarists of the 90s/00s and it was nice to hear that this early on. The solo at the end of If You Have To Ask is a great example. I enjoyed this a lot more than I would have guessed, when I wasn’t busy trying not to think about what the phrase “suck my kiss” might mean.
Hadn’t really heard most of the songs on this album before. Love the funk vibe. The intro and solo in funky monks were fantastic.
Not as good as I remember
This record was a game changer and some of the songs are excellent. But I just can’t. Yasi says you need to be a Californian to fully appreciate this band and it’s my easy way out of not liking it.
I have some stereotypes about this album, let's see how they hold up. Overall, this album is a victim of the 90s mentality of needing to fill the length of a CD. The singles really carry it, a lot of filler here
Album 48/1001 Corny lyrics, but plenty of funky jams nevertheless. 🌶🌶🌶 Favourite song: Under the Bridge ↘️🌉 Honourable mention: Breaking the Girl 💔👩🏼🦲 Suck My Kiss😚💋 Give It Away 🎁 I Could Have Lied 🗣👩🏼🦲🤭 Blood Sugar Sex Magik 🩸🍬👉👌🎩🪄
Alternative band title. Some of their all time great songs in here, but there's also some of the most forgettable padding included that really brings things down.
Best Song: Under The Bridge. An iconic song with a pleasant sense of melancholy, even if I think that the culmination with the choir is overkill. Worst Song: I Could Have Lied. What insane whiplash to hard cut from "Suck My Kiss" to this melodrama. I feel the irony of the contrasting subject matter is lost on Kiedis. Overall: Maybe this is in part due to how overplayed the RHCP were during my youth, but I was really struck by how annoying most of the songs here were. Everything is coated in a sort of dude-bro pastiche that often ends up sounding closer to Limp Bizkit than anything else. Some of the hits are still good, and the bass is funky, but Anthony Kiedis as a lead vocalist is mostly just a chore to listen to. The album is also horribly structured, with complete tonal shifts seemingly every other track.
I like the goofing around. The silly voices and the cheeky guitar playing. A bit seedy as well, but mostly harmless, wearing a sock on your winkle daftness.
I don't know if want to listen to this again haha I've heard it before I think it's overated, Under the Bridge is really really good tho, it might be their best song. The great Andy Gill produced this one, I really tried to like it you know, but it just sounds a bit grating to me. I'll give 2/5 but I can't give half star
Was really enjoying this album until I got to “They’re Red Hot” which is absolute shite. Thankfully it’s only 1 minute 11 long but it completely fucked up my impression of the whole album. And lost it a star. Guys, just because you’ve got 74 minutes playing time on a CD doesn’t mean you have to fill it with every bit of shit you record.
It doesn’t really get me but songs are generally good
RHCP to me has always felt like a band that is lesser than the sum of its parts. -John Frusciante, one of the most well-respected guitarists of all time and has all kinds of great riffs on here -Chad Smith, great drummer and remember how he looks like Will Ferrell? Isn't that funny? -Anthony Kiedis -Flea, one of the most well-respected bassists of all time Other than a few notable standouts most of their songs are kinda fun but also pretty ass.
This is my wife's favorite band so I waited until I could listen to this with her. Good album! Maybe the most coherent RHCP album front to back. Lots of very popular songs on this thing. I liked some of the in-between tracks too, but they definitely weren't as sticky.
I knew some of the singles and I really like those. But the other funk songs aren't really my thing. I went in thinking I was going to give this a 4 based on the singles, but I think the other songs mean I have to go with a 3.
Ehdottomasti paras biisi koko albumilta oli Under the Bridge.
Iconic album but the second half hits way harder than the first
Much better than “Californiation”. They seemed to have more fun with this album. Being housed in a mansion so they could concentrate on their craft helped. This album was not bad.
The singles are great and still hold up, for the most part. The rest of the album, however, does not.
Ei tää vaan oikein lähde, tai siis ei ollenkaan.
In middle school and high school this record was universally regarded as a masterpiece. It hasn’t aged too well since then. I find Anthony Kiedis obnoxious and honestly abhorrent. But it’s hard to hate the hard rock funk of the rest of the band and “Under The Bridge” is a great song.
This had a couple of decent songs but unfortunately is not my cup of tea - after a while I felt like it was just a lot of slap bass and I didn’t really want to keep listening to it.
1/1001 I would probably have given this five stars back in the cassette days. Honestly haven’t come back to hear this one more than two or three times since. Maybe it’s a four star. I don’t know. Not my vibe these days.
An album loved by those around me at school but left me cold, as most funk rock does. I did my duty here and fought through my distaste of Kiedis and his 14 year old girlfriend's. To my surprise there was plenty to appreciate, and AK was incredibly annoying at times. The guitar playing of Frusciante was awesome at times (If you have to ask sticks in the mind) and there are great songs (Under the Bridge of course but also Breaking The Girl). It's too long but wrestles itself above a probable initial 2.
What the hell - most of this dumb ass fuckery works.
Very funky! Not my favourite lyrics, but the core band groove is undeniable. Great basslines from Flea, great riffs from Frusciante.
A few gems but everything else basically sounds exactly the same to me.
I bought this after Give It Away was released. I liked it then, but didn't listen to it often. In retrospect, the singles were good, and no discussion about Under The Bridge, which is an absolute masterpiece. The rest of this is good regarding the music, but the lyrics are, in parts, juvenile and bad.
Todo bien pero no entiendo mucho la locura por este grupo. Give it away igual vive en mi. Nota: 2.7
Some of this was good, some of the songs were so similar to the other songs, that it wasn't so good.
This was good but I fear it was a bit too long.
Used to love this album when I was 12. Doesn't do quite the same for me now, but can't deny it's greatness in what it is. I just don't relate to it. It's cool though.
Fine. I get it
I'm sorry, I have to speak my truth. I do not understand the chilis. I have never been overly into them but went into this album knowing how beloved it is and hoping my eyes would be opened. And I still don't get it!! I'm sorry. The backing instrumentals on pretty much all tracks rule but the lyrics are juvenile, the vocals are terrible, and the rapping is exhausting. Under The Bridge is an all time classic, I will concede. However that was 4 minutes out of a total 💥79💥. Come on guys.
Not my kind of music. Never was a RHCP fans, never will be.
I've never listened to this full album before. The first track sets the tone with the funk style. The musicianship is excellent. Flea's bass is the signature sound to most RHCP songs, the slap, funk style is great. Drums are great, guitar is great. Under the Bridge is probably the best song on here, where Keidis is being his most honest and vulnerable. Give it Away was huge at the time, singing/rapping that quickly takes talent. Breaking the Girl is another good track. Overall the rest is a lot of filler, but there is some good funk in there.
I’ve always considered these guys the patient 0 for the overused guitar style which somewhat mimics Hendrix but with much less charisma, and has slowly devolved in generic-ness. But quite a lot of these aren’t bad at all, the raping works quite well I think I think this must be by far their best album, because everything I’ve heard after this is quite trash. This is also the rock album equivalent of get rich of die trying, in the sense that it’s WAYYY too long and half of these songs could be removed and it would be so much better. The funk stuff is quite good it’s just such a ripped off style that it sounds quite generic, even though these guys might have been the originators. Quite a lot of the lyrics make me feel a bit icky considering the dodgy backstory of the singer, either that or they’re just really cringe. Favourite songs: the power of equality, suck my kiss, I could have lied, the righteous and the wicked, give it away, under the bridge, and the Hendrix covers. Overall around 6/10
Not my cup of tea but they'll have one banger come out of nowhere and I'll be like shit, this is good!
Liked it but not as much as Californication. Still a distinctive Chilli Peppers sound and Give it Away is a banger
Always thought there were a handful of ok songs on this album
not their best shi
Under the Bridge is one of the greatest songs of all-time. Let's get that out of the way. I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, I really do. I like them more than a lot of people. However, do we really need SEVENTY PLUS minutes of this? The whole CD-era is full of bloated, long slogs of albums. Which is a shame, because if you pared this down to a smaller tracklist, it'd be much stronger. Lots of filler that just kinda goes in one ear and out the other. The band has one of the best rhythm sections and Frusciante is terrific. The instrumental backings are always funky and tight. But man, half these songs, Kiedis just spits inane, juvenile, half-baked rhymes. Like why. Still, some songs are quite good (Under the Bridge, Give It Away, Breaking the Girl), and the instrumentation is always good. It's just bloated.
Genre defining classic. Runs on a little long but still a great.
top 3: - breaking the girl - i could have lied - under the bridge
Gemengde gevoelens over dit album.. Under The Bridge vind ik echt een heerlijk nummer. Maar verder is het veel van hetzelfde, waarbij de halve rapstukjes ik niet geweldig vind.. Ik denk dat ik uitkom op 3.5, maar vind 4 echt teveel. Wordt een 3 dus.
7/10, A bunch of great highs but a bunch of tracks and moments that embody the "what RHCP sounds like to people who don't like RHCP."
cool, but quickly tiring
average, 3/5
For some reason RHCP annoys me. But, I have to admit this album is pretty good, even though I’m not that into their funk/rock/rap hybrid. I knew at least the first 8 tracks - there was a ton of singles or just play in general. The two slower annd more melodic songs are standouts to me vs their testosterone-y mashups. Wish they’d gone more in that direction. 3.5 stars
Bra grejer
Rock hiphop? A couple of the songs are fine but as a whole I don’t get it.
Enjoyed this a lot in the end.
Can a record be a classic when it’s this uneven? Lots of stuff to admire on here and the RHCPs were certainly having fun and claiming ground all to themselves but too many tracks on the album are skips.
A very good album that falls just short of great imo. Under the bridge is a forever classic, but i love breaking the girl. High three
Continuing with the pedophile bullshit from this list, we get arguably the most important record in the peppers discography. As fucking stupid and corny this shit is, I can never hate it. Growing up in SoCal with two gen x parents who both loved this band quite a bit made their music a big part of my life. Listening to any of it takes me back to being a little kid. I don't fault anyone for not liking it, and I know I'd hate it too if I had a different upbringing, but it's just too entwined into my life.
I do love rhcp, but this album is only mid for me
Its OK.
я всё про рхчп уже усвоила в том автобусе в 2001? году. этот альбом не успел навести СТРАШНУЮ тоску но превайбы в нём
Ok, not my genre
The Chilli Peppers have a distinctive sound. I like the sound and the band has fun with it. But they fall into the trap of not venturing too far from their sound. They’re better when they play against type — their iconic rambunctious sound is good but their slower songs are better and they need to mix it up more on this album, which is a 3.
3,25
Pretty meh
bass lines and passionate punk
Great Bass! Don’t like the vox at all
I liked but i don’t like too much that kind of rock
Couple of good songs - its fine
Ehdottomasti paras biisi koko albumilta oli Under the Bridge.
No me parece su mejor disco pero es cremita bien cargado de energia caotica.
Overlong but some good songs on it. Under the Bridge is still great, idc if it is nostalgia speaking.
That was somewhat surprising for me. I was excited to listen to this album, as it seems to be the band's best and I already enjoy the hits, so I was curious to see what the rest is like. It was alright.
rhcp was my favorite band through 2022-23🥹so when i saw the name i was very excitedd. it felt crazy listening to this genre after all this time of changing my taste in music:Dd but it was great. actually, i didnt enjoy this album anyhow personally, but listening to it lead my to my old rhcp album with all my favorite hits and the nostalgia hit HARD. i just love them, such a big part of my life, an era. (this little stars just bcs of this concrete album, overall they are like a 10/10 for me:Dd)
Placeholder. Will edit later
Were about during a critical phase of my music forming but, in all honesty, never really broke through when it would have been natural for them to. They had a few decent hits, but I put my lack of engagement in them down to some small points. Their music is not always coherent and when paired with limited vocal dynamics it doesn't help. They wheel out the same vocal "urgency" to add energy on a repeat cycle and it is a musical anchor for them. They have some very strong unique characteristics, but they feel unable to ride that fine line for very long. I think the highlight is the funky baseline they seem to generate but the crashy guitar at times then takes the final nail in their otherwise promising assemble. Dont hate anything really so giving a 3 but way too long this album.
I enjoyed listening to this because RHCP were part of the soundtrack to my youth. It's a lot more funky than I remember it, the lyrics are fun, and most tracks get your head nodding. Is this a good album, though, or is it just getting an easy ride on the nostalgia ticket? There are some genuine tunes on there which are quintessential RHCP and have stood the test of time. On the other hand there is a lot of quite annoying filler and this is a long album. Too long. At it's worst, the vocal are grating, the lead guitar is basic, and the music lacks the nuance to hold my attention for the 74 minute runtime. It's sad because I think there is a 4* album hiding inside there, but as it is presented I can't bring myself to score it that high.
The band does really well with the faster more funk based songs. They slow it down a little too much and lose what they do best. 3/5 Might listen again
Under the bridge
Good, just not for me
Equal parts gross and great.
Funky
there is one song I love - the rest is just ok
Funky Monks, I Could Have Lied, Castles Made of Sand
noticed before listening that this album is 1hr 19mins long which made me wonder how much red hot chili peppers is too much red hot chili peppers? the answer is that this is maybe just a little bit too much red hot chili peppers BUT this album has under the bridge on it which is one of the best songs ever so i can forgive a lot. this was enjoyable, kind of interesting to listen to rhcp beyond the fifty million singles that i already know. ive had a lot of 90s albums recently and im not complaining tbh. this was a good decade.
I was really dreading this one when it popped up, but I was surprised to pick up on all the excellent blues and funk motifs. By the time i finished “Under the Bridge”, I was genuinely impressed with the musicality. Good job, RHCP. (And good job Rick Ruben! Unexpected side effect of this project is learning about music producers.) Good enough album, but I’m so tired of gross horny boy songs.
I really liked the first two songs. But a lot of the lyrics are gross.
Standard 3 stars for me, I’m tempted to say 2.something, but for Flea’s magic.
Higher Ground is way better. That's my favorite RHCP album by far and BSSM doesn't reach those same heights for me. Again, not bad, but not an album I'd reach for over Higher Ground.
i thought i was gonna love it but (besides otherside obviously) i could not get into it!!
This had a couple three big hits on it but I prefer their earlier material.
Exakt som plurres recension
Alltså topparna är många och höga, men det är tyvärr för långt asså och andra halvan är ganska seg.
Gillar deras sound i små doser. Detta var inte en liten dos. Men några riktigt bra låtar ändå!
Inte en favori.t
Great album! All the songs very different from one other
Well it's definitely music
i love these guys, i cannot explain why, but i do, and even then there’s still a limit where i think they could reel it in perhaps. the good songs on this album go so hard, and there’s also a lot that are a little toooooo quirked up
spoko ale sie nie przykleil niestety
I'm all for a band going into the studio with free rein to be creative and come up with as much material as they can, but I just don't think RHCP are dynamic or versatile enough to warrant what amounts to a double album here. The hit songs (and a few of the deep cuts) are incredible but they're just diluted by tracks that feel like incomplete outtakes and are barely good enough to be B-sides. And Anthony Keidis' lyrics are just embarrassing. Great sounding record that would have been worthy of its reputation if it was pared down to 10 songs.
I'm just not a Chili Peppers girlie. This one though was on repeat for me in 10th grade along with Pearl Jam 10 and Nevermind. It's definitely the least of those 3. In retrospect it does not hold up and is actually pretty tedious and overlong. We get it you're funky and horny just quit heroin.
I haven't seen this side of the chili peppers before - only really heard the classics and never loved them but enjoyed this more than expected
No one is as surprised as me to find out this is actually pretty cool? Unfortunately, it's also way too long, which prevents me from saying it's good
Bomba - 4 LL - big 7
6/10 - a couple of big songs, I've seen them live a couple of times but I don't know... are they slightly overrated?
The songs didn’t really stick out to me that much, but I can tell why people think it’s a good album
The first side of the album is one good song after another. My high school self would say this is second best album but it's up there for me with the funky vibes.
Why are there 17 songs on this. The four that I like really carry it. Wild that this is their best album and it’s still buns.
Не самый лучший их альбом
For nostalgia I give this 5 stars but I have to peg it back a little because I read Anthony Kiedis’s autobiography ‘Scar Tissue’ and found out what ‘A MUPPET-HUMPING MONKEY FEOTUS.’ Mr Kiedis really is, (Thanks Bob Hoon, you always know how to describe people accurately). He is a self confessed pedophile, proud enough about it to include it as a chapter in his book! Flea is awesome!
i’m the grumpy old troll who lives under the bridge
It was ok. Good vibes but dont feel like listening again 3.5/7
sorpresa pero me gustaron bastantes
The two big hits on this are still great. Under the Bridge in particular takes me way back. But the rest of the album is very dull, so those two just lift it to three stars.
This album is pretty bloated, their signature funk, rap, rock style gets old pretty quickly. Couple of great tracks in their though Fav Tracks - The Power of Equality - If You Have To Ask - Suck My Kiss - The Righteous and The Wicked - Give It Away - Under The Bridge
Too long for its own good
Ya know I gotta give the peppers credit. They are great at what they do. Do I like what they do? Not really. If Anthony kiedis was a different singer I’d like them way way way more
Pretty good but feels a little all over the place with early to pop rock RHCP. Cool guitar work
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. Not a huge fan of the Chili Peppers, but I can hear the influence they’ve had on music and Under the Bridge is always timely.
Red Hot Chili Peppers kind of grate on me.
I like the Chili Peppers in small doses, and sometimes not at all. But I do admit that every once in a while “Give it Away” strikes some chord in my lizard brain that makes me a slave to the beat for a radio blaring moment.
Some great songs on this but it just goes on and on. It's way too long and gets tedious. I wish they had gone with more songs like "Breaking the Girl" and "Under the Bridge" instead of yet another song about Keidis' dick and what a sex machine he is.
(Flea lays down funky bass line) (John Frusciante plays melodic guitar riff) Anthony Kiedis: BIG BALLA, MEGAFAUNA, MET A GIRL SHE WAS FROM CALIFORNIA For years I thought this was a better album than Californication but I think it's the other way around now. Give It Away and Under the Bridge are classics but there's a ton of filler on here.
sex magik!!
Magic?
A strong start, but lost its footing near the end, and the novelty of the guitar and slap bass wore off quickly too. Definitely too long overall.
Power of equality and if you have to ask sound catchy but don't grab me, not my type of music. Breaking the girl was right up my alley. Funky monks was typical rhcp. 3.5 stars if I could give it that, not my typical rotation but potentially a listen if I'm in the mood
Better than the newer RHCP stuff but still pretty hectic
This is so white liberal core. This is just basic funk rock. Relatively fun but nothing exciting. A bit too long, and the songs don’t stand out, but not bad by any means. 7/10
This is definitely not for me, but jeez I think they do what they exceptionally well.
Schwierig. Under The Bridge ist ein super Song, aber der Rest kann da nicht wirklich mithalten. Thematisch etwas fragwürdig und allgemein viel zu lang und dafür dann doch zu gleich. 2 1/2, ich runde mal auf.
anthony kiedis is altogether too out of pocket but there r some bangers on this album for sure
Some good songs, many that aged poorly
Not bad. Nothing special
Under the Bridge is a classic but the less-streamed songs weren't too crazy
A surprisingly multifaceted endavour by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Some interesting songs, some legendary, but also a lot of filler.
I don't hate it. I've listened to it before. Just wasn't in the mood to listen to RHCP today.
I've definitely heard some of this singles off this LP but never listened the whole way through, so here we go! It opens in a kind of nonchalant, classic RHCP way - funky and edgy but nothing out of the ordinary and quite boring honestly until we're resurrected by the first single 'Breaking the girl' which is a favourite of mine! The singles stand out to much on this album in such a big way - so many of the tracks are just filler but the singles are among their best tracks to date. 'Under the Bridge' is their best. The final track just sums up the band and how they don't take themselves too seriously which is their strength.
Yeah, I bought this in 1992. It got a few listens and it's been sitting in the CD rack ever since. I recognize most of the tracks, even though it's been ages since I've listened to this. It hasn't weathered the years very well has it? The music is good, but how did I miss how immature the lyrics are? Plus, Kiedis' voice gets annoying after a few songs. This is getting a lower rating than I expected it would when I first saw it pop up. Under the Bridge is a seriously amazing song, though.
I really don't understand the popularity of this band. I understand the technical prowess of the guitar and bass players. They're interesting enough. I guess I just feel like the particular brand of self-aggrandizing lyricism is pretty juvenile...also Anthony can't sing and Faith No More/ Mr. Bungle is better and should have won the war.
Think this album would grow on me was shocked that they rap i thought it was only rock. But this album got so many genres mixed mixed into 1 one song sum of it they’d rap then have a rock type vocal pattern with prog rock type instrumentals its forsure well thought of work but from the first listen i’d only take a few songs with me but they are worth a listen and i think this album having a large fanbase isng crazy i see its appeal i’ll be listening to it a few more times to see if i like it more ✌️
i like the peppers, some great tracks on this record as well, but it’s so long and engaging with it as a full record is difficult, i feel some songs can be considered filler, but the quality of most songs is good, it’s good if you love the band, but there are better albums
*Several big ones here: Suck My Kiss, Give It Away, Breaking the Girl, Under the Bridge. *73 minutes is too long for RHCP. *Love the bass. And guitar. *In fact, really enjoy the album when Anthony Kiedis isn't singing. His voice has never bothered me, but this is a long time to be subjected to it. *The lyrics are awful, but you don't notice them most of the time. *Fave tracks - Castles Made of Sand, Breaking the Girl, and Under the Bridge RATING - 6.5/10
3.5
I'm sure there is at least a solid low 2★ album hidden the this mess. But it's muddled with about an EP's worth of 4+★ material, and a handful of tracks that arent so bad. Overall feeling... (6.75) ★★★½
Wow that ended with some really dumb shit. Generally like this STYLE of the RHCP better than Californiacation, but 75 min of this is too much.
Just a few days ago, I sent Ted a fake news article that said, “John Frusciante, Flea ‘Fine’ With Anthony Kiedis Naming Harmonious, Beautifully Intricate Song ‘Clappa Dap Funk Suckin’ Mama’” Californication is my RHCP album. The others are fine. This one is longgg and feels kind of like a parody of Kiedis’ dumb vocals and lyrics throughout - exhibit A: Sir Psycho Sexy. Under the Bridge is one of the best of all time.
Directly when my absolute dedication to extreme metal started to crack, this album came out, among others. Beforehand, I was already getting ready for RHCP's evolution with Mother's Milk, while I still preferred their earlier style it slowly grew on me (read: expanded my musical understanding and readiness for new stuff). This album is part of the soundtrack to my growth, both as a man, personality and musically of course. I probably still know most of this album by heart. As a sidenote, the whole of 1991 was quite tumultuous for me and where this RHCP album is tightly would up with my life; I got laid off, drafted into the navy infantry (which ran from fall of '91 to late summer of '92), but also I found so much new styles of music. Bands like Cypress Hill, Primus, Godflesh, Type O Negative, Pearl Jam, Massive Attack, Infectious Grooves, Soundgarden, Ice Cube, Cathedral and the list goes on for 1991-'92. The metal side of '91 was thick with bangers for me too, with albums from Bolt Thrower, Bathory, Morbid Angel, Dismember, Carcass, Entombed and Suffocation. Future me would also find '91 albums like Monster Magnet's Spine of God, Kyuss' Wretch, The Obsessed's Lunar Womb, Corrosion of Conformity's Blind and Temple of the Dog's album, very important albums that found me few years later and which would steer me on to the aural road I'm still travelling.
I’d give the instrumental version of this album 4 stars. I’d give it 5 stars if you shaved off five or six of these tunes. Too long and too creepy.
I had fun focusing on the instrumentals for the first few tracks and admiring the funkadelic influence but then this really beat me down with the Anthony Kiedis of it all.
I think most of us can agree that Anthony Kiedis is a trash human being. I think most of us can also agree that Californication is a trash album (definitely from a mixing and mastering perspective; from an artistic perspective, I realize art is subjective — but still, a lot of that album is trash). Anyway, that aside, I was kind of excited to listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magick. I'd never actually heard it in full, but all of the monster tracks I grew up hearing on the radio are on it. Under the Bridge and Give It Away are classic songs. If I'm not missing any, there are five tracks from this album that were huge singles. That's wild. Unfortunately, that's where the fun ends. There are 17 tracks on this album. SEVENTEEN. And despite being such good musicians, most of them start to run together after a while. And the lyrics. My God, the lyrics. RHCP will go down in history for having some of the dumbest lines of all time. And while Kiedis isn't the worst vocalist, more often than not, his garbled rap-rock makes him sound like Adam Sandler's "Waterboy" character. If this album had been the five singles plus another handful (I don't know which because, as I said, they all ran together after a while), it might have been a good album. But at seventeen tracks, I wanted to claw my eyes out by the end. 3/5
If not the birth of rap rock, surely the most successful initial foray aside from Rubin’s own more hands-on production work. I was never much of a Peppers guy. They seemed largely harmless, but with one foot in the “be in a band to get chicks” world. Subsequent revelations that don’t seem to bother the wider world showed there was occasionally something actually harmful lurking about but I guess they’ve all grown up so who care? As with any other RHCP release, your tolerance for Kiedis will determine how effective the songs are. This is hailed as Frusciante’s breakout record, which makes sense: Mother’s Milk and the earlier records had some variety, but largely stuck to the funk-rock formula. BSSM has some of the latter, but the pull of Jane’s Addiction and alt-rock is the noteworthy turn here, largely the result of Frusciante’s playing and writing. Wasn’t really my thing back then and still isn’t, but, lyrics and CD bloat era length aside, it’s hard to fault anything here.
Probably the most famous of their albums and the one i have listened to before. Recognized a lot from this album.
Some classic Chili Peppers songs for sure, particularly Under the Bridge and Give it Away. However, the album as a whole I found tedious, it's length very much a feature of the era it came out in. I understand why this funky, dirty record has a following, but it's not really my thing.
It is a really good album, but I think it could have been cut short by a couple of songs as it sounds very repetitive towards the end of the record.
Am I a grown up? This album just seems to annoy me now. Under the Bridge gets two points alone however.
the best of a bad situation
This album had a lot going for it in the first half, and then it falls off drastically. I enjoyed many of the funky tracks and also a number of the heavier rock tracks. The vocals on all tracks were hit or miss due to the goofy sound. The last half of the album lacks the cohesive songwriting that it had in the first half. I guess not every track has to have an impact, but some of these songs weren't even fun. By the last track, "They're Red Hot", it feels like they weren't even trying. Favourite Track(s): Breaking the Girl, Under the Bridge Least Favourite Track(s): They're Red Hot
The baseline was cool. The vocal cadence and melody (if you can even call it a melody) were almost exactly the same throughout the whole hour+ album. It was fun for 20 minutes. Maybe 30. This album suffers from being too long in my opinion.
7/10 Highlights: Breaking the Girl I Could Have Lied Blood Sugar Sex Magik Under the Bridge
Weer een plaat van de Peppers. En weer te lang. Maar Blood Sugar Sex Magik heeft wel iets rauws dat ik wel gaaf vind. Tuurlijk is het de Funk rock aka Rap rock aka Funk Metal wat de Peppers kenmerkt (Give it Away Give it Away Give it Away Now). 7,5/10 Highlights Funky Monks I Could Have Lied Give it Away Under the Bridge
I am immediately confronted with the fact that I liked this album more as a kid than I do now. I still think their sound on this album is cool. I'm struck by the lackluster lyrics. Anthony Kiedis should not by "rapping" about gangsters. Breaking the Girl is one of their best songs. I never really liked Suck My Kiss. I am not liking this album as much as I thought I would even as it goes on. I like their "ballads" more than the straight rock songs. Give It Away is an awesome song and created an all time great Simpsons moment. Under the Bridge is great too. These guys like talking about their dicks.
Some of their absolutely best funky groovy music. Their fusion of punk, funk, & rock is so unique. The only complaint is the album is too darn long. They could easily trim off 5+ tracks and have a tight killer album. I dock this 1 star for being too bloated.
Perhaps this is ground zero for "that 90s problem'". Too damn many songs. And there are at least 5 (and maye 7-10) that are competent grooves but totally uninteresting as songs. Generic funk. The singles from this album really stand out sonically. Not just better songs but more interesting uses of the basic RHCP formula.
I know Nick Cave recently retracted his critical comments about this band, but I stand by them; "I am forever stood next to a speaker playing shit music, and it's always Red Hot Chili Peppers."
A couple of killer tracks but the record is 5 songs too long
Alguna me llamó la atención, pero qué voz tan cansina jajaja
