Super fun album
Love this album! It’s vibe, lyrics, beat.
Love most of it, but it does have a bit too much filler to be 5*
blijft lekkere laidback hip hop. Overleeft beter dan de gangsta bullshit.
Controversial opinion: follow up and Yang to ‘3 Feet High And Rising’s’ Ying, ‘De La Soul Is Dead’ is the better album. This is still great; I just didn’t feel it this time around as much as I have in the past.
Full of great tracks but damn do I hate the skits and filler.
is a exotic album, by th way is so cool and funny
Brought back memories. One of those albums that really does warrant a solid listen from end-to-end because of the interludes and decent flow from one track to the next.
While it does have bangers like me myself and I and say no go, I see it more as a whole greater than the sum of its parts. I hate the shitty echo sound effect and I don't love the flow but by the end I was like "wow this is a pretty unique and fun rap album" even though I wasn't actively jamming out to every single song. Definitely understand why this album has so much prestige behind it though. Hearing this when in 1989 would be crazy because its about a decade ahead of its time.
The limitless potential of sample-based hip-hop, a little indulgent and bloated but still a great album.
It was great fun listening to this album, with all the creative beats and use of samples. Recognised Steely Dan's Peg of course, and there was also a sample I recognised from Portishead, who used it in their song Wandering Star. Despite the overall pleasant vibes, there were also quite few moments that were a bit meh, or a bit too silly. The hit "Me myself and I" is still by far their best song.
Don't like that game show thing it tries to do. Apart from that absolute banger of an album
While the music data itself a bit, the lyrics and inspiration to hip hop are undeniably timeless.
Pretty cool, especially for 1989 rap. Not sure if I would listen to this a lot, rounding a 3.5 up to 4.
I'll leave wiser ears to debate the compromises necessary to bring De La Soul to streaming: This album, tracks heard before now with connecting tissue, is effectively funky and functional. The cover gives an accurate first impression and the music has depth to back up the length. 3 Feet High and Rising never settles; Not on a density of samples, not on an intensity of sunlight. It's not a demanding listen, but does demand to get to know you. Inimitable.
I was a little sick while listening to this which is sad because it sounded really fun but couldn't fully appreciate it. But I still liked it a lot, definitely going back to it at one point. Songs I Already Knew: None Songs I Really Liked: The Magic Number, Jenifa Taught Me (Derwin's Revenge), Ghetto Thang, Eye Know, Tread Water, Potholes in My Lawn, Say No Go, Buddy, Me Myself and I
This is a lot of fun. Along the lines of A Tribe Called Quest where humour and irony take the place of anger and bravado. I didn't have the chance to really absorb the lyrical content and I would say that ATCQ does it better especially in the musical diversity but still an enjoyable listen that I WANT to further explore and discover 4 stars
It's De La Soul. How can it be anything but amazing?
I thought, "oh no, another hip-hop album" but this album is truly exceptional. I usually dislike the genre but this was so fresh and fun, I couldn't help but enjoy it. Great tunes.
Enjoyable album, good mix of humour and hits too.
It’s a shame most De La Soul has been unavailable to stream until coincidentally the day this album was randomly generated
A good time for everyone and it feels a little too perfect to be assigned this album on its 34th anniversary
never heard of this group before but wow. Very fun album. Upbeat happy rap was not something i knew existed. Funny coincidence is that its actually coming out on spotify tomorrow and has not being on streaming for years- i’ll give it a listen tomorrow as well.
mostly silly but nice
Very dope Hip Hop record, amazing sampling work and lyrical flow between the guys. Key tracks: The Magic Number, Change In Speak, Jenifa Taught Me (Derwin's Revenge), Ghetto Thang, Eye Know, Tread Water, Potholes In My Lawn, Say No Go, Do As De La Does, Plug Tunin', Buddy, Me Myself And I, This Is A Recording For Living In A Fulltime Era (L.I.F.E.), D.A.I.S.Y. Age 8 out of 10
Playful and strong
I like this album. The flow is smooth, the beats are fresh, and the rapping is nice. The main issue I have with the album are the non-music interludes, which were weird to me. Overall, good album that was fun to listen to. 4/5 Favorite song: Buddy Worst song: D.A.I.S.Y. Age
klasik. jedva čekam da 3/3/23 dođu na streaming platforme, iako imam diskografiju na kompu. RIP Trugoy (Plug 2) <3
Old school innovation
I'm super glad this is finally streaming. The world needs De La Soul. Best track: The Magic Number
Sadly, this one is unavailable in any streaming service. I'm not sure I listened to the correct album getting a Youtube playlist with some unavailable videos. It's sad because just with a little sample of the whole album, it's clear this is powerful. It's something exciting and, for sure, a must-listen before dying. I don't know if there is more De La Soul on this list, but it should be.
A long-time fave, with so many highlights and memorable cuts, but an excess of filler (the spoken word bits do wear a bit). Maybe not aging quite as well as one expected.
An amazingly fresh hip-hop LP with personality in spades You could argue this album is too bit-heavy, but the sense of personality woven in between masterful micro-sampling and exquisite beats yields a winning combination that easily sustains the hour-long LP. Great wordplay in the bars and a loose narrative thread for everything together into a top-tier product that’s joyful yet focused, playful but heavy on performance. Between De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest + others, I’m realizing just how shamefully uninformed I was on the genre - tradeoff is I get to discover all these amazing LPs in exchange for taking the deep dive.
yea it was good, felt kind repetitive at the start but once you get in to it its great
Weird, cool, very creative - 4 stars
De La Soul osaa hommansa
Zo'n vrolijke hip hop hoor ik precies liever. Erg genoten van dit plaatje
this reminds me of parrapa, this is the quirkiest rap i've heard. the samples are great, and I think its just fun to listen to.
This is an album that I've been meaning to listen to for a while now. I really enjoy albums from this golden era of hip-hop sampling, before the law decided that DJs needed to pay for their samples. This is a cool album, though I had a tough time finding a definitive version on YouTube, since there seems to be automated copyright claims on a lot of these songs. I wish that albums like this had been able to shine through a bit more during the era of gangsta rap, since there's not anything that makes gangsta rap inherently better than this style other than the intensity of its subject matter. The production, music, and lyrical content are all on par, but I guess people were less interested in positivity than they were in brutality. Overall a really cool record that deserves it's place in rap history, even if it was overshadowed shortly after its release by west coast rap 4/5
This is so damn good that it should be mandated to be readily available on SOME streaming platform. Seriously, you can't even buy a digital version of this album on Amazon. I'm paying for (some would suggest foolishly) unlimited music on Spotify, Amazon and YouTube Music, and it shouldn't be this challenging to find this remarkable album. Thankfully, you can stream the entire album on YouTube. It turns out De La Soul's entire catalog will finally be made available on streaming services on March 3, 2023. But the simple fact that I was willing to actually buy a digital copy of this album if one would have just been made available tells you everything you know about the album's quality.
Probably my favourite hip-hop album thus far. Just wish it was easier to find, because i'd love to download and relisten to a lot of it.
Interesting that this one is not on Spotify. A few years ago De La Soul offered their discography for free download on their website. It was only for 3 days or something, but I made sure to snag all of their stuff. So I was familiar with this one. But it has been a while since I listened to it. Cranking it up... The spoken word thing again? O-kay... (Recurs once or twice. Not a fan of that.) The samples of songs that I know: Steely Dan, Hall & Oates. Look it me, I know stuff! The interludes, like "Transmitting Live From Mars" and "Take It Off"... it's better than skits or sketches, which a lot of other hip hop groups. De La does more sketches in their next album, "De La Soul Is Dead," which I find more annoying. But the interludes are listenable hear. They hold p on repeat listens. The "hits": "Me, Myself and I", "Plug Tunin," "Potholes In My Lawn," "Buddy," "Eye Know"... you can hear the group is having FUN. Lots of other groups at this time aren't doing that. It's a fun album, and it's fun to listen to. I also recommend the album "The Grind Date." I listen to that one every so often.
Cool, fun album although it's a bit uneven. I really enjoyed the start of it with their version of The Magic Number (great beats and sampling) followed by Change in Speak (love the lyrical stylings and rhyming). Some ups and downs from there until Eye Know (great tune and cool sampling, felt like an Arrested Development or A Tribe Called Quest tune). For example Can U Keep a Secret was funny; not essential, but still worth a listen. Too many short tracks or interludes? I did enjoy some of them like A Little Bit of Soap (again, great sampling). Others like De La Orgee felt out of place on this album (save it for other trashy albums). Other cool tracks were Potholes in my Lawn, Buddy (great collaborations), Me Myself and I (funky - thanks George Clinton!), and DAISY Age.
Awesome rap trio discovery! Attention! Link to Spotify is wrong! (2023-01-17)
4.4 - Squarely at the pinnacle of the "golden age of hip hop", this record dazzles with breezy rhymes and an infectiously groovy/goofy flow. If I'm honest, it leans a little heavily on skits, but the spirit is just so fun that I can overlook that one gripe. And the beats draw from a wide swath of genres, which makes this an equally heady listen. Note: The album in its original is supposedly coming to Spotify in March, 2023. I was able to stream it here: https://archive.org/details/de-la-soul-3-feet-high-and-rising/3+Feet+High+And+Rising/CD+2
4.5/5. Really enjoyed this. Eye Know is a great song, probably my favorite off this. There are some brief points in the album where it's a little weird for me, but I kind of like that. Overall, very good album (I wish it was streaming).
De La Soul's 1989 "3 Feet High And Rising" sits at the pinacol of the early hip-hop sampling Parthenon, blending and bending genres and audio from multiple different media (film/TV/commercials/scratching, etc). The album, like many at that time, blended up and down tempo beats with socially conscious lyrics and funk and jazz samples. Essential historical listening. The album seems to have directly influenced UK experimental Trip Hop. Like this, check out MC 900-Ft Jesus and DJ/Producer Howie B.
First listen of this and frustrating it had to be through YouTube, even so very impressed feels like such an influential hip hop album. Hopefully can come back to this a rerate if they ever get it on streaming services.

Classic, true pioneers of hip hop
4.25
Fun old school hip hop, fancy rhymes, good beats. Enjoyed the listen
your mum
Well I was very exited listening to this and then it went for 40 extra minutes with an orgy (orgee) skit. I like this kind of clean high quality mixing and I can see why people say its the SgtPLHCB of hip hop but Sgt is much more concise.
It's regarded as a classic of the genre, and for good reason. It's quite enjoyable. It's just never been a 5 for me, but a strong 4
I love me some hip hop especially 80s and 90s
I'm not usually into the humorous, tongue-in-cheek type rap that was popular in the 80's and early 90's, but I think De La Soul did it better than any of the other rap groups that were popular in that time. The skits were funny and the songs are catchy as hell. This is an album that has really stood the test of time. No idea why it isn't on Apple Music.
Fantastic
Really good! 4/5
This one hit me a lot harder than the Run DMC. Saw one review call this album the Sgt Peppers of hip hop and I liked that.
Good rhymes, interesting samples it's alright, dare I say even funky fresh?!
Funky grooves
I didn't get all the way through this one because I kept getting busy but holy shit, this was amazing! Loved the beats, the lyrics, the performances, everything! Super laid back and yet all the flows were so precise. I only knew De La Soul from the "wash yo ass" song on Tony Hawk but now I need to get to know the rest of their discography.
De La Soul consists of Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo, though producer Prince Paul is also worth mentioning as he contributed to the first 3 albums, including this one which is the De La Soul debut. 3 Feet High came out at a time when hip-hop was dominated by the goofy Beastie Boys and the serious Public Enemy. Choosing the carve a new path for themselves, De La Soul decided to make hip-hop that was much more relaxed while also being conscious of the topics they rapped about. Production-wise, Prince Paul would take a psychadelic approach to the samples that would be incorporated into the beats, making for a fresh new sound that complimented the vibe of the 3 MC's. In addition, certain songs such as Buddy (which just so happen to have a Q-Tip feature) would pave the wave for Jazz Rap in the 90's, spearheaded by the excellent A Tribe Called Quest. There is also a sample from I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) by Daryl Hall and John Oates, which is their best song. I could take or leave the skits and some of the other filler songs on here (Can U Keep a Secret and Do As De La Does has a way of killing the album's momentum). De La Soul can also be credited for the first "sex skit" with De La Orgee, which is a musical crime if I've ever heard it. Otherwise, this is an album worthy of praise: stylistically unique and pioneering in the hip-hop genre. Enjoy what you can.
What an amazing album, I did not know what to expect but it was a fabolous experience Amazing flow, sampling on point, annoyig that it is avaliable becouse if more ppl knew about this album today it would be in the goat debate
Much more country than I remembered.
Enjoyed the listen. Amusing that they were labelled the hippies of rap.
Yeah this is good
Highlights: Magic Number, Eye Know, Say No Go, Buddy, Description
Classic 4.5
Jenifa Taught Me - interesting, thoughtful Ghetto Thang - very catchy Eye Know - whistle is a nice touch, very catchy Tread Water - very catchy Potholes in My Lawn - catchy, nice baseline Say No Go - nice baseline, vocals are angelic, drums go well De La Orgee - damn! Buddy - Q Tip!, mellow Me Myself and I - vibe, synth, harmony I Can Do Anything (Delacratic) - optimistic, vibey Happy, lovey dovey, 80s vibes but introspective, a tribe called quest vibes. more weed tho
Don’t normally listen to much hip-hop but this took me straight back to the 90’s! Lots of fun to listen to
Highlight: Magic Number
Outstanding album. Inteligent, creative Hip hop without Ganstas or mumble. 4/5.
83/100: Wow, never heard of this group or album before and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long in my life to find this. What an incredibly fun energy from this album. It sounds like a group of friends just decided to make an album. I can almost picture De La Soul cracking jokes throughout recording sessions. The through line of the game show is both genius and hilarious, and I mean the sheer number of “De La Soul” based plays on words—from “de la clothes” to “de la heaven”—is so damn comical in a great way. Through all the fun, though, this group produced a masterpiece. I saw a YouTube comment (because this album for some reason isn’t on Spotify) calling this album the “Sgt. Pepper’s of rap,” and honestly I see it. This album follows no set of rules—it does what it wants throughout every second of every track. The interlude “Cool Breeze on the Rocks” is a great example of this. This song just sounds like flipping through stations on the radio, but somehow it just works within the context of the album. I wish this album was on Spotify so I can listen to it on repeat for the next week.
My favorite album so far (besides London calling). My favorite tracks: Potholes in my Lawn Tread water Ghetto thang The magic number Me myself and I Such a fun album!
magic number is such a goooodddd song omgg. the album is good but can feel lengthy sometimes
Few tunes, fun little album!
pretty goofy but cool
This is actually one of my favorite hip hop albums of its era. From front to back De La Soul show their lyrical prowess and penchant for fireball sampling.
I was looking forward to listening to this but it was somewhat underwhelming
this was an entertaining album, i didn't expect it to be hilarious. I loved the funny sketches throughout the albums. top picks: too many to list down but i've added 11 songs from the album to a playlist :)
This is the very first long rap/hip hop album (or maybe just long album in general) on this list that I wasn't extremely bored by or wondering when it would end. I liked how the beats were different throughout and it didn't feel repetitive.
Very fun old school hip hop
The intro was def interesting game show like how many times the bat mobile got a flat. BUDDY I DON’T KNOW Songs I like: 3 is a magic number Okay clean translation between songs cool breeze on the rocks to can u keep a secret. As well as Take it off and A little bit of soap.
Quite interesting and inventive with fun sections rather and some jokes. Some bits annoyed me, also it was an hour x
A fun record. After awhile the beat got a little too repetitive. Old school hip hop
More fun than I expected! 3.5
Very good but too long and also skits so
It was fine
pretty aight
This was fun
Solid rap album
positivism, good vibes, some absurd humor and a contagious joy that does not depend on the aggressiveness of his contemporaries the production is the most outstanding aspect of this work; a collage of funk, soul and jazz sounds mixed with all kinds of samples in a chaotic but meaningful and purposeful way, sometimes resembling a surrealist radio station apping as such is marked by a carefree and curious tone; you are not dealing with the deepest lyrics or the most elaborate flows because the intention lies elsewhere. it is an equally valid and rarely traveled path; perhaps this was one of the first times, and it is clear the doors it would open for those who came after
This was fun. Some very quirky song topics like one about dandruff and soap. All round a good fun vibe!
There are some great moments here, but a lot that is boring too. I’d be happy to remove at least half of this album.
It was interesting to hear early hip-hop.
Can't really decide if I liked it or not. Not typical hip hop or rap but I read it's jazz rap and I hear that.
My rating 3.4
Some interesting bits and
Really fun album but I dont see it as a commonly replayed one for me
Really vibey. I like.
Malo se previše ponavlja sve, na ovakvu dužinu je nedovoljno varijacija, ali mora se reći opet da mi je ovo jedan od boljih hip hop albuma dosad.
It's iconic and has a few great tracks but feels a bit filler
really close to a 4, a little inconsistent but some bangers, Eye Know slaps
This genre has never been my favourite but this was surprisingly enjoyable. I might listen to this again
Real groovey and cleaver!
Good album. Bit too many skits and banter songs to really get going for me but still really cool.
7- / 10
Tää dela soul on jälleen ihan jeespoks. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ihan taidokasta samplaamista!
Not my exact type of rap, but I can get jiggy with this. Nice, smooth beats followed by a fresh flow. Can't go wrong with that.
Cooler Rap
Such an abstract and humorous album that truly sounds unique. The beats sounded like they were from television shows back in the day and the witty rapping by De La Soul complimented them perfectly. I wasn't a huge fan of all the interludes going on in the album with "De La Orgee" definitely being the weirdest. But many of the songs would be what I would introduce a child to hip hop with. Well enunciated rapping with direct and witty rhymes.
#956. Pretty good grandpa rap. 3/5: the bee's knees
In fact I do crave sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll ... and hip hop! It is nice to have a reprieve from gangsta rap, and it does at times work on its own trajectory. Not always, though, the rhymes sometimes forced and the beat sometimes unconnected. When it works, it works really well (like Eye Know).
Brings back a lot of fond memories.
это не плохой альбом, но я устал, ну и тк это реп из 80ых- много смешных звучков, ву танг на голову выше
Yeah, probably the best hip hop album I have ever heard but, well, I don't really like hip hop...
A little less serious of an album, I didn’t think the interludes really helped this one
Ok underground rap hip hop
Feld dated but brought back some good memories
The guys obviously had fun and it feels like it's well made, but it's not my bag, baby. 3 Feet High and Rising? More like 6 Feet Low and Falling, by De La Damned. 👹
⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can imagine this was a bigger deal when it came out. Some of the beats sound a lot more fresh than I’d expect for 1989. Without knowing much about these guys, there’s seems to be a lot of passion in the album. I bet they had a blast in the recording studio. I digged a lot of the production, but I don’t love skit-heavy hip hop albums and this leans heavily into that. The skits are sometimes weaved into the progressions of the songs well enough, but they still halfway took me out. There are some highlights like Eye Know, Buddy, Me Myself and I, and Ghetto Thang, but some lowlights like the skits and De La Orgee (I don’t wanna listen to that shit ever again). Without the skits this might be a 4/5 for me.
A little long, but fun
Yeah I don't really know what to think about this one.
This album was a silly game show (literally). I find the idea very cool and hope it went as they had hoped it would! I enjoyed the ride, but the album itself just had a few highlights and the rest was alright. Favorite track was Eye Know.
I suspect me saying this will be a recurring theme: "I can recognize the skill and position of this music, but it's not really for me." Beastie Boys I think were like a strange phenomenon, whereas this is a much more intentional reversal of then-trends. A commentary of sorts. I'm basically just repeating the wikipedia article on that but what I mean is I can *tell that* just from hearing it and knowing when it was made, which makes it a very good commentary. The flow and rhythm of the vocals are smooth, there's a great groove on many of the tracks. But I was checking the album about halfway through and was like "wow that much left huh." Somehow it runs into a similar problem as Fiona Apple did for me, but for different reasons; a lot of the tracks blur for my ADHD brain with only a few standouts. Right now I got "Plug Tunin'" on as I write this specific sentence and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but at the same time it's like, wait, when did I get down to track 18...? A lot of it blurs together like that. Maybe repeated listens would help distinguish it but I don't feel motivated to do so. It's good, but not my stuff, yeah. Favorite Song: The Magic Number
Kinda fun but not my kinda fun. Probably wouldn't revisit
Hip-Hop und Rap
This is a fun album and easy to listen to. It's very classic hip-hop and obviously some of these songs were huge hits. Wasn't crazy about the interludes but I respect this. Top Songs: The Magic Number, Me Myself and I, Say No Go
I can tell they were having fun, and the album was fun at times. However, it was way too loaded with skits and barely fleshed out 90 second tracks. I’m not sure why nearly every rapper thinks their rapping ability qualifies them to be a sketch comedian, but the skits bring down so many otherwise good albums. This one included; the fully fleshed out 3 minute plus songs were all pretty great.
i liked this record, but didnt actively listen, just had it on in the background during my workday
It's sound good
It’s fun to listen to but doesn’t really offer anything
I like it.. wouldn't go any further than that.
5/10 The wonderful thing about hip hop is that within 20seconds of a track starting, you can tell if you will like it or not cos NOTHING CHANGES . Likewise with the whole bloomin album - and you can be sure you are in for a long one as these artists do not seem to believe in the self-edit. So this is ok, definitely one of the better examLes of the genre. The skits infuriate me, as to the really dumb tracks like De La Orgee (who enjoys listening to that??). But the ly released a plethora of decent singles from this and they are alright.
Hop hop Isn’t normally my thing but this album was just a few guys having some fun and making people smile- it certainly made me smile. It also made me ponder those questions. How many feathers on a Purdue chicken? I reckon about 350k How many fibres intwined on a shreddy? I reckon about 600. What does something mean.. I can’t even make it out slowed down… so I have no flipping idea 😂 How many times did the Batmobile catch a flag? No idea it caught flags- I’ll say 2 🤔 Anyway whilst I was thinking about those the album had finished and contestants had zero idea in the answers too.. But super fun. Fave song- change in speak. (Just beating ‘me, myself and I’) Least fave- description Fun feel good album but not all to my tastes so 7/10
Haven’t got to the end of this. Not really doing it for me. 3
I just know too many albums that sound like this one.
Favorite songs: The Magic Number, Change in Speak, Transmitting Live from Mars, Eye Know, Say No Go, Me Myself and I
reading about how influential this album is really took it up a notch for me, but it's still at times kind of (charmingly) awkwardly 80s. not my usual outing when it comes to hiphop, but i do really admire the more positive attitude of the album, it is silly and very fun
Fun listen. I will not revisit this whole album, but there are some solid songs on here. It is a very good late 1980s hip hop album. 7.75/10 Top song Eye know
Some Good songs - But too repetetiv for me ..
3 stars
It’s a fun hip hop record, with some really cool samples. A Steely Dan sample in a hip hop song is not what I had on my bingo card. However, I just can’t get into this old hip-hop. It just sounds so dated and of a specific time period. Just not quite for me.
Definitely a groundbreaking album. It was easy to feel how much fun these guys were having while recording this.
2.75 - I don't love it. It seems very corny. I almost gave it 1 star because I read that it popularized putting skits in between tracks on albums.
This is comfort listening for anyone past a certain age. While it's true that some of the flows feel antiquated and some of the lyrics might feel "corny" to younger audiences raised on harder edged hip hop (or duller edged mumble rap) the beats are undeniable, and the album just generally radiates an exuberance that's we could all use. The album is too long with far too many tracks (a function of broader CD bloat at that moment in music), and the skits are kind of dumb, but I enjoyed this album a ton. Beats on Can You Keep a Secret and The Magic Number are total joy.
Fantastic old-school hip-hop. Just a lot of fun.
I really enjoyed this album, but it ran a little long and I felt like there was a lot of filler they probably could have edited out.
It's a fun album. Felt it ran a bit long though. 3/5.
3 out of 5. This was a fun album, definitely for parties.
Decent hiphop album, the skits are horrible as usual. Quite good for an early hiphop album High 3*/5
Arent these guys just one big ray of sunshine
(3 is) the magic Number
Still yet to figure out why I love some hip-hop and am more lukewarm on others. This is one of the latter because it didn't draw me in.
More hip-hop albums should be fun and whimsical. I think this album was a fun little listen, full of skits and silly messages.
Super fun album.
The skit quality lets down what is an icon of Hip-Hop. It's your uncles favourite rap album.
Fav song: Jenifa Taught Me
Funky, very 80s
It was fine. Probably on the list b/c of its importance.
I like this corner of rap with Tribe. These tracks were decent the only thing I really hated was the orgy skit or whatever that was supposed to be.
A classic in Hip Hop for a reason. It's many distinct styles of music are well developed in many different tracks but still felt repetitive at times. As a start into Jazz Rap and alt rap its perfect
I’m sure I listened to some De La Soul years ago when I was listening to old school hip hop during a phase. Don’t remember much so this will feel brand new. Old school hip hop with jazzy energy. In the same world as A Tribe Called Quest, except maybe less straightforward. Feels more experimental. It’s a fun listen. Songs go right into each other without losing a step or beat. Some of the old school samples are great. This era of hip hop feels so fun. Eye Know might be my favorite song on the album. Just a jam. It doesn’t exactly drag, but it is a little bit bloated at times. I don’t find the skits to be annoying and they’re short, but always feel unnecessary to me in all rap albums. Just a fun sound. I think it’s a solid 4, although its length makes the last few tracks feel like too much. Thought about going down to 3. Wish it was a little more concise. Tough because it’s a fun listen but felt too long.
Curioso
The best songs on this are brilliant, playful, tuneful classics like The Magic Number, Eye Know, Buddy and Me, Myself and I. But it's around an hour long and the skits between some of the songs don't work for me that brings it down from around 3.5 to a 3 star album. Listen to the highlights here, not the whole slightly bloated thing.
didn't love this at the time, there's some great (if played out) singles but found it quite trying at times
Del 89. Buen álbum.
This was a fun album. I liked it.
not a fan of the gameshow thingy but the actual songs are nice
Refreshingly different on its release and still holds up reasonably well.
+ cool, chill, groove - too much talking. My hip-hop problem: it's too distracting for me to do anything else while listening to super words-forward music -- .... especially once it got onto the orgy track, and then 'buddy' after that, and... etc. Dug the grooves, it's great. In songs like "This is a Recording", I'm good and not distracted and really dig it. But then the interstitial skits especially, but also many of the songs, they're a Weird Al level of 'bits', and I find it hard to listen to. And then it gets back to sick grooves. I'm reminded of Tool albums with the interstitial filler tracks which are neat for the vibe, but I find them annoying and distracting and usually end up skipping them, so find those albums to be the rare ones I struggle to listen straight through. This feels like one of those. ("This is a recording!") "I can hold two pieces of doo-doo in my hand!" ... yeah, hard to have on in the background while I work, or hanging out with folks, or party, or etc. Maybe fun while driving, or it being the thing everyone's laughing about, but not just 'in the background'. I get how it could be good for hang vibes, it grooves, we chill, and then there's a funny bit. But still, bit-heavy music is hard for me.
Creativo, diferente
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Very Good - Where the previous album was hard-edged and direct, this is bouncy and light. A very fun album. Generally I don't mind skits but this is a little heavy on them. Eye Know is a great track. Everything on here is quite good but it never reaches a mind-blowing level that it is sometimes credited with. Clearly it's a very good album but it doesn't quite reach all-time great level.
2.5
Not my kind of thing. There were a few songs that I've tagged to listen to again, but all in all, it wasn't for me.
Cheerful, but I didn't really get into it.
Kinda fun at times, but not something I'd regularly listen to.
3.5 Refreshingly unserious, you can see how crazy influential these guys were
This era of hip hop is hard not to like. I could probably listen to this on repeat all day, but I've never found myself drawn to it like I might be drawn to A Tribe Called Quest records.
fun album
Only got about halfway through. Pretty good but not really my thing.
I really like De La Soul, but I'm not usually in the mood to listen to an album's worth of De La Soul. Some of the hits I was familiar with on this album were here, some nice new ones to me and some interludes that were definitely better forgotten.
I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, the actual songs were all pretty good. Great bars and good rhythms. I hated most the skits and that weird orgee track. Just made me uncomfortable tbh.
Some of the songs in isolation are great. I thought I'd like this album more than I have
Kinda fun. Maybe a tad corny
This album was very entertaining. The intro was hilarious, and I like that they kept the skit going through throughout the album. These guys are masters of sampling, so there are always several musical tidbits per song that are fun to dissect. This style of rapping, the flow and cadence, is a bit outdated, but I still much prefer their lyricism to many modern rappers. It feels like De La is using the language to its fullest much more than some rappers today, even if the flows may sound a little corny. This album has a lot of character.
very fun listen. the funniest record I've heard on this list so far, topping College Dropout. It reminds me of the Beatles White Album for the humor and because I could have done without some parts. Difficult one for me to rate because it isn't quite what I like to listen to, although it did spark some interest in Hip-Hop for me. I found the flows enjoyable even though I usually don't like them from this period. I'm going with a strong 3 - 7/10 territory. Its casualness is both good and bad
its like a 3.7 but the skits take it down. sorry i know its quirky!
Some like classic rap, I enjoyed it. Seems like it had some important themes and messages, wish I had more time to delve into it.
It's fine. I don't think I'd listen again, but maybe. It is a pretty funny album, but nothing that I want to really come back to.
Lots of brights spots on this album, but plenty of imperfections -- too long, lots of frustrating talking in between tracks, and lots of songs I'd probably skip in the future. One of those albums that I'd maybe change my tune on for the positive in the future though.
I was ready to give this 5 stars but it's nothing like I remember. The highs are up there, but a lot felt like filler. This makes me so sad.
Bästa spår: Ghetto thang, Eye know, Say no go, Buddy
On paper this sounds like exactly the kind of thing I'd like, but it didn't really hit for me. The hooks are good enough, but the lyrics are only OK and the jokey parts haven't stood the test of time (to be fair any skits on rap or hip hop albums are always pretty bad). Overall I was surprised to find this pretty boring
6/10
Great
THREEE IS THE MAGIC NUMBEEEER YEAH
Not bad, but rap has never been my genre
Liked all the elements surrounding this album. The lyrics and vocals were the primary focus of this album and they weren't good but me personally I lean towards instrumentation which was in there but I wish there was more uniqueness in sound throughout the album. 6/10, Favorite Song: Description
some really good songs but I don't think the style of de la soul is all for me. i'm giving this a strong 7/10. first listen tracklist ranking: 1. Me Myself and I 2. Eye Know 3. The Magic Number 4. Say No Go 5. Buddy 6. Tread Water 7. Ghetto Thang 8. Plug Tunin’ 9. Potholes in My Lawn 10. This Is A Recording 4 Living In a Fulltime Era 11. Change in Speak 12. D.A.I.S.Y. Age 13. Jenifa Taught Me 14. Description 15. Intro 16. Transmitting Live from Mars 17. Do as De La Does 18. A Little Bit of Soap 19. Take It Off 20. I Can Do Anything 21. Can U Keep A Secret 22. Cool Breeze on the Rocks 23. De La Orgee
Overrated af this
Liked: Eye Know
Man, I had such high hopes for this but it just didn't really hit as hard as I was hoping. Just failed to have any real punch to it.
Listened in the car. Very conflicted about this one because the actual songs are really great. Love the funky energy and summer vibes. But the skits and set dressing around those songs are either boring, cringe, unfunny, or just gross. Like most hip-hop and rap of this era, I wish they'd just ditch these stupid skits and let the music do all the talking.
Not really my bag but some of it was quite fun.
I think this album is very interesting considering the albums that followed it in the late 90s. It seems like it was the last generation of 80s style of hip-hop before the turn of the decade with 2Pac biggie and N.W.A..
Loved this when it came out. It still holds up pretty well though it starts to drag near the end.
Some decent tunes but could have been edited to remove a few of the lesser tracks.
Rap and Hip Hop are really not genres that I listen to. The use of samples on this album were pretty good. I just can’t see myself listening to this album again.
Gah I've tried a few times to like the album and just can't do it. Obviously some classics on this. Just can never get over the runtime and don't gel with the skits inbetween
It was a fun listen, albeit a bit too long. Hip hop pop with a little goofiness thrown in.
What I love most about De La Soul is how funky each soulful track is. Their grooves are infectious and they deliver every rhyme casually yet filled with intention. 3 Feet High and Rising does a great job presenting this group and all of their talents. Some of the skits between songs are schticky and, as I’ve said in previous reviews that included such material, don’t add much value to the album so my preference would be that they were left off. Otherwise I enjoyed this listen and am a fan of the band.
De La Soul is Dead. If you know, you know. p-p-put it on vibrate! RIP Trugoy.
Quality pop flavored hip hop, nothing to dislike about it. In fact, I really enjoyed it. Fun listen end to end, no complaints other than the goofy skits.
This is an album I was looking forward to. It’s got plenty of nice grooves and is mostly easy to get into and listen to. It feels very “after-school special” in so many ways, which makes the stuff that doesn’t (like De La Orgee and a few others) feel really out of place. Even though there’s a lot of effort put into making this feel like a complete listening experience, I could probably just take the hits going forward. They seemed to be the best songs.
Liked Me, Myself & I and DAISY Age. Rest of this was kind of lifeless
Great beats fun vibe
Good, bit repetitive
This album gets better every time I listen to it. At first I had a tough time, making up the vocals, and I still don’t really know who is wrapping most of the time, but the instrumentals are crazy, and there are so many funny moments that, as a fan of MF DOOM and Open Mike Eagle, I can’t help but deeply appreciate this album.
3/5/26 - listened during a drive to a meeting. I enjoyed it but probably nothing I would listen to again. Some of the skits were unnecessary. Best Song - Jenifa Taught Me
Good fun to listen to, and a couple of classics on here. A bit long for my taste: I would prefer to lose the skits, although I get they're part of the character of the whole piece.
Old school
Fine but didn't enjoy that much
Diggin this old school rap hehe. There was something so pure and almost naivety to the older stuff. Rap has morphed into something so weird. I can't get into the newer stuff.
Some fun stuff in here. Nice sound.
Not for me
Funky and infectious, De La Soul sounds like a natural evolution of hip hop and rap working its way from old school to the more modern sounding rap that Nas would deliver on “Illmatic”. Entertaining to listen to, never dull. But the rhymes include references I’m not privy to since I come from a different culture. I can still appreciate the sound. What happened to De La Soul? They should have been bigger. 3 stars ( 1 for each foot )
This didn’t feel like an hour long album. It was a bit odd but fun!
It’s alright

Good front to back.
De La Soul, with their Daisy-powered vibe, were the original "hippie" rappers, but they were always able to keep a fair bit of hip-hop cred because they were completely authentic, they actually had the lyrical and verbal chops to justify their popularity on an artistic level, and Prince Paul's production was very funky and creative. 3 Feet High and Rising is a pleasant listen, even if a lot of the music sounds dated. I'm also not a fan of skits crowding up albums. They can be fun the first time through, but I get tired of them very quickly on subsequent listens. I know De La Soul's fanbase tends to like the skits on their albums, so this is a personal preference. 3 Feet High and Rising is a classic in the conscious hip-hop genre and was groundbreaking when it was released. Still, I think that De La Soul (and the Native Tongues crew) would make more captivating records as they developed their style. Three stars.
this was really good but there was definitely too much filler and idk how to feel about the orgy song i won’t lie
I think this exposes a key issue with the album a day format. I’ve spent my whole life hearing how amazing de la soul is, they’re the best hip hop group ever!!! They’re on the gorillaz hits!!! But only getting a one time through this thing, I don’t like it. I’m so sure if I sat down and listened through and got the time to enjoy this for a week or so I would really like it. I hear it’s lyrically dense and clever! But all I’m getting round one is boring production and songs about taking off clothes and talking to a fish. Second half is an improvement, starting around say no go, but it’s still not my favorite. This is one I will have to return to but I’m forced to give it this rating until I can come back and really dissect it; time that really is not allowed by this process. I will say, very deserving to be on this list.
Never heard of them or listened to them - this was a fun/unique/weird (in a good way)/enjoyable album to listen to! Will most likely comeback to this one and give it a re-listen in the future
Pretty fun album that overstays it's welcome and can be very very repetitive 5-6/10
Used to really love this one... but geez it's all over the place
Yeah this one’s real weird I only knew De La Soul as the guys who did the rap part for Feel Good Inc before this, so bit of a different vibe here. It’s not garbage or anything, but reading the lyrics melts my brain, they’re just a little too silly. The more music focused songs do sound good, there’s some good variety in there. The skits can be pretty funny in an absurd “what am I listening to” way. I do think it goes on a little too long, and some songs just don’t hit very much, but I’m glad I listened to this one. Absolutely the most unique hip hop I’ve ever heard.
Not bad, not great. From a different time I guess, when rap/hip-hop/r&b were a little more fun and actually had to appeal to more than one demographic. Especially enjoyed the cuts between tracks.
This album is fun, there are certain moments that happen in this album and I think to myself that it’s funny or clever. I kind of vibed to this album, but it’s not my kind of music still, so it’s okay in my rankings.
This album is a strange experience. On paper I love what De La Soul are doing. But I look through the track listing after listening and I think do I really like many of these songs? Usually the moments that capture me are the fairly on the nose samples of my favourite songs like Peg in Eye Know, Hall & Oates in Say No Go, the very famous Me Myself and I Funkadelic sample. After hearing those samples I want to go and listen to the originals rather than appreciating what De La have done with it. Maybe Me Myself and I is an exception there. In the end I enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would. Though admittedly, I wasn’t expecting much. The gameshow skit is funny and does add a nice bridge in between a few of the songs. I think this album is a great example of one of those albums that if you got into it when it came out and it was part of your life for years, you might be inclined to call it a classic. For a new listener though I can't say the same. Maybe if I come back to it more often I might end up giving it a 4 or more. Did I ned to hear this before I die? I’d say so
Old school.
the artists sound like they're having a lot of fun playing and producing this album which makes it fun to listen to. I liked that the songs sampled well known beats from other songs into them. since the album was long, the little skits broke up and separated the album in a good way. had a hippie vibe. 6/10
pretty cool rapping with great flow and cool use of sampling, pretty atypical of the genre (well i've only heard the greats thanks to the list so there's a lot of standards here)
This list has made me fond of this hip-hop style from this era, with great sampling and just a vibey feel. It really just sounds like what a Tribe Called Quest did before they came onto the scene, but lacking that extra mile. Because of that, it feels lacklustre but is still a great record regardless and deserves its applause.
I really, really, really hate interludes/skits
Some good songs, old school hip hop, but hit to be repetitive
Good feel group from my youth. De La Soul always knows how to cheer you up. Listening to a whole album of theirs was a bit much, though.
Repeating my self as usual. Younger me would have probably rated it higher.
Another album cover that made me shudder in anticipation for awfulness. But this was less terrible than expected, which could just be because the last albums have not been great. Anyway it was decent, not the kind of album I would go around listening to again, but didn't hate it.
Really mixed feelings on this one. Massively hit and miss. On the positive side, this was a refreshing difference from most of the other hiphop that has come up on this list so far. It was upbeat, comedic, silly, fun. On the negative side, as an album, there's too much nonsense and not enough music. Also, as much as I enjoyed this more than most of the other hiphop that has come up, it's still not my thing, and this album hasn't changed that at all. This album sort of comes across as just a group of friends messing about, so I'm sure they had a lot of fun recording it, they're probably fun people to be around, but listening to it as an album... meh. Rating a 3 just to differentiate it from other hiphop, which I've generally rated lower. Probably deserved anyway since it's inventive in the face of all of the gangsta rap from the same period.
No song was memorable because they are all so short. It sounded like they were having fun while recording which gives the whole album a good vibe. I can't deny this album is a fun listen, the beats are distinct between songs and funky. This is the time where repetitive beats works because each song is so short it doesn't matter. De La Orgee made me very uncomfy, different times I guess.. other than that I found the lyrics refreshing compared to a lot of other hip hop albums on the list Felt like it would have benefited from being shorter but I would never give it higher than a 3 low 3
Gražu, senasis hiphopas.
innovative hip-hop, dance rhythm but lyrics passed me by
Firstly what a cool cover, still looks so cute and fresh! Some of the songs are very fun but also some didn’t really connect for me. (3.5 stars)
I wish I could enjoy this kind of music, but it just sounds so dated to me.
decent album - some cool licks #musicsky 3albumsky
Super !
The beats are very nice and I automatically start to bop my head while listening to this album. However HipHop is not really my style of music but I still enjoyed it.
álbum legal, tá? but I barely listen to it
Tja, dat is vroege hiphop
Happy hip-hop. So much better than gangsta rap. Some great samples - especially having listened to Steely Dan a couple of days ago on this list. Beyond the big tunes, the rest a bit filler, but the album flows well.
We had this album when I was a kid and I remember my dad playing it a lot. Love to see a reference to Schoolhouse Rock. Sometimes when I see big potholes I get that "Potholes in my Lawn" poppin' up in my head. I like "Eye Know"
Eye Know still legitimately sounds good. About 3 other classics (Magic Number, Buddy, Me Myself and I) that sound fine, but only in context that they're nearly 40 years old. To reach 23 tracks mean lots of awful skits and filler songs
I like it when early hip hop is all "my name is Matt and I'm hear to say." "A Little Bit of Soap" is giving Tracy Morgan in Werewolf Bar Mitzvah vibes. Like the vibe but only a couple songs make me pay attention.
Such a monumental album of my youth
this was so enjoyable to listen to. kinda childlike and silly. very fun
3.5
Somewhat banal. Not great, not horrible, just good. 3 non-descript stars.
This is actually the first hip-hop album that I've enjoyed listening to for a while, at least. However, after about 45 minutes (still impressive!), it started to get on my nerves. I won't be listening to it again anytime soon, but at least I didn't feel the urge to turn it off immediately. 3/5
An absolute essential, and it's on my shelves, but despite being classic late 80's hip-hop, it doesn't have the lasting impact of say Cypruss Hill, Public Enemy or NWA. It sounds a bit 'soft' in comparison. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★☆☆ (6.5/10) Total reviewed : 219 Already owned : 50 Purchased : 10 To buy list : 4 Nope : 155
Mejor de lo que esperaba, pero definitivamente el hip hop no es para mi.
Before: I know I do like De La Soul a bit but I can't name a single song of theirs I like. I had a brief infatuation with hip-hop back in the day. I guess it's my favorite genre from that realm. During: It's a fun and enjoyable listen. I like it more than I dislike it. However, it's not something I would go out of my way to listen to. After : Given it's historical significance, I'd say it does deserve to be on this list, but personally, I have to rate it a 3.
Cool. Spunky.
I think I'm going to give this one a 3.
The music is infectious and has a great groove, but could do without the little "vignettes" between some of the tracks. Found the album overlong as a whole. Appreciate the light hearted silliness, but at times it spills over into plain stupidity. Could do without the self agrandising in places too, but I guess that's just part of the genre.
It was just ok, not my vibe and not memorable
Definitely full of bops but can't say I'd seek it out?
Good fun album, I come back to it from time to time, clever rhymes and laid back sunny beats. Ita a good listen.
Good start, songs end up sounding the same; quite a long album
old hip hop is all the same. it is cute for 2 seconds and then its nothing
Interesting but not for me
chill
ya no me acuerdo, supongo ni mal ni bien
ríete pero me está gustando
I don't listen to hip hop. But hot damn if it ain't refreshing with rap that's not all bang babes get dollas.
i like it i just think these guys crawled so a tribe called quest could fly
a fun listen, great to hear where so many samples from other songs came from, and in general i just super enjoyed it - (3 Is) The Magic Number, Ghetto Thang, and Tread Water have been faves so far
Lots of fun clever lines. Old school feel, with a touch of a what I thought was progressive for the time.
Funny and clever at the same time, with some good nonsense. I wish more rap was like this.
Whimsical skedaddling.
great album but not my style
+ fun hip hop, eye kniw er jævlig banger - orgy greiene kunne de ha kutta tenker eg 3/5 would buy the record on sale
The good is good. Rest is mid
