Reviews (page 12 of 14)

Better than I thought it would be. Unlikely to listen again but a few hits on the album so it nudges to a 3

This album has Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child of Mine, but it's a sound I can't fully get behind.

It’s weird how the good songs are so good and the rest are solid crap.

It's like Moyley Crue, but with good songs. 6/10

Appropriate for end-of-week entry. Many fantastic tracks, but everything else is very meh! Nice dash of 80s glam rock to set me off for the weekend.

Too happy.

It's not something I will listen to again, with the best tracks overplayed on radio, but there is worse hair-rock

Meh, only this many stars because of the song trinity

This is not my favorite style of music or band, but it does take me back to being about 8 years old and jamming out with my cousin to this on cassette tape.

hmm…okay…this album would probably get 4 stars if it was like…3 songs shorter. cut It’s So Easy, Out Ta Get Me, and Think About You. pretty great as far as 80’s guitar music goes. tons if iconic Slash riffage. a little dated but there’s some monster classics here nonetheless. lot of corny ass lyrics, thanks Axl (everyone needs love, you know that it’s true) haha. ya pretty cool i guess.

Even though this album has some of the biggest hits in rock history (Paradise City, Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child O’ Mine), I found much of the rest of the album annoying and overly aggressive. Now, I understand that being bothered by the aggression of a GNR album is a dumb thing to say, but I found all of the non-famous tracks, like My Michelle and Out Ta Get Me, just really not great. An album I would not come back to even though I plan to hear the singles in arenas and on movie screens for the rest of my life. Can’t get away from those!

Despite some hits, not really my taste

Hey look it's every classic rock station from when I was a kid (it's fine).

overrated 3/5

Þetta er þrælskemmtilegur nostalgíu-bunki.

Pretty all right.

Bangers is bangers but everything else a bit samey

Painfully samey

I will never understand how an entire generation of girls fell in love with this man's irritating voice.

Multiple times during this project, I've found myself going "man, it's really good that I haven't really bothered to listen to mainstream music much in the past ten or so years," because man, I can understand being SICK of these songs. When I still lived with my dad, he'd put country radio on, and god damn, I quickly decided that modern country wasn't my thing, I tell you what ... Anyway, where were we? Oh right, overplayed drivel. Appetite for Destruction is the first time during this venture in which I've wondered if that would even matter. Oh, I understand why Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child o' Mine are well beloved, but understanding and finding enjoyment myself are two different beasts. What is now ambivalence would surely be groan inducing pains and hair pulling if I was more in the loop in regards to radio play. I did not mention Paradise City yet, because I ... actually like it? I don't know what the science is behind this, so I'll just roll with it, I guess. The rest is similarly a hit or a miss. Rocket Queen was a fun ending, and Nightrain was a blast, but this album altogether just feels pretty average. Pretty alright.

When I was 16 I was OBSESSED with Guns n' Roses. But the strongest fall the hardest, and my obsession turned into a severe hatred. Even now, almost 10 years later I can't listen to GNR without cringing. And the fuckers are everywhere still. So there is no way I can be objective about this track. 3.5, because I can't deny how great their debut album is, but if I have to listen to Sweet child o'mine or Paradise city one more time, I'll blow my brains out.

Not my taste but I can see the appeal

Ehh? A few great songs but nothing all that special lyrically, or musically.

well made but also super cringey I love how they just randomly drop “fuck” once in like half the songs to sound all cool and hard

There is so much that is tiring and uninspiring about the rock from this era, yet I found this just a bit more nuanced and powerful than similar albums from this time. Don't get me wrong every song had something that grated me, but every song also had a chunk I quite enjoyed, and overall I think it worked as an album. I think this would have been pretty awesome when released, this style of rock has just aged so poorly. Fav track: It's so easy

Pretty annoying album, but leaps and bounds more interesting and exciting than Van Halen, I generally found at least something to enjoy in each track. It all just blends into one for me. The standout tracks I think are only standout because I've heard them so many times. Lyrics are similarly inane to the other classic rock weve had and way too gross to get into. A few foot-tappers, and I can see why it crossed over. Two and a half. Fave track: Welcome to the Jungle

listening to Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction, and i get the sense that there is greatness baked into the essence of each song (take for example the anthemic “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, which brims with kind of triumphant thumping that would easily soundtrack any moment of jubilation; or the raucous of “Welcome to the Jungle”, and opening song that so clearly affirms the album’s mission statement, directing the flow of emotions long before the record even settles into itself), and yet, when taken together, it just feels… burdensome? of course it’s the kind of burden that positively overwhelms: these are expertly crafted songs, and Axl Rose manages a contagious ferocity. every song is so insanely familiar, and now — almost 40 years later — it is such a glaring disadvantage. there is so much life to be heard here: the individual songs are overflowing with it. but then you make one journey through the album, and suddenly the songs begin to cancel each other out, each song snuffing the life out of the one before it; and so it goes that six songs in, the monotony in style, tempo, and theme becomes overbearing. but tear them apart, however, and the richness begins to shine through.

Some really big hits on here like Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child O' Mine. Outside of those it is pretty mid.

Fun trip down memory lane. I'm sure one of my friends had this on cassette back in the day. Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child O' Mine are still great. I do also like Mr. Brownstone.

Most of the songs sounded the same and seemed to apply the same "bass-snare-bass-snare" rock drive. The guitar was impressive and professionally played but I found the style repetitive at times and that had me longing for more of an aesthetic change. The drums were basic but solid and the bass was played simply to match the drum beat. The stand out tracks are great. They are the obvious ones: "Welcome to the Jungle", " Paradise City", and "Sweet Child O' Mine".

Sweet Child of Mine slaps, but on first listen I found everything else to be sooooo annoying. I made a playlist of the songs I found least annoying: It's So Easy, Mr. Brownstone, and You're Crazy. I'll be spending all day trying to appreciate them. End of day update: Mr. Brownstone is good, the other two I can stand

Has some classics and some really nice parts, I do get a bit tired of the voice after a few songs but overall still ok

Fun but not mind blowing

The singles are good, but the rest is a bit much. Unless you like that sort of thing.

Significant album, just not my thing.

Didn't grow up in a house that loved these guys... That being said I have come to appreciate them more and more. Still not my thing but a fun window to 80s hair metal and LA partying!

6.5/10 notes in notebook

I've heard these songs so much already that its just lost what made it special in the first place.

spicy old men music

The bangers were banging and the rest were fairly unimpressive. Overall a let down while not being bad

Some classics

For a debut album to be made up of multiple monumental hits is impressive, and pretty much the definition of blowing up. The music sounds awesome and badass - pretty dated, but still enjoyable. However, I've never gotten into Axl Rose's voice. The screechy voice is fine for a song or two, but not for an entire album. It reaches a point where, even with all the gymnastics, it sounds one-note. Shame because let's face it, most of these songs are classics. Standout tracks are the three big singles and My Michelle.

Overall 3.5. Fun to listen to the album other than just the typical hits you know

Did not know this was their debut, kinda crazy to have welcome to the jungle paradise city and sweet child o’ mine on your first album. Rest of it was forgettable

Mixed feelings here. The band is so ridiculously tight on this album. I feel like the production is outstanding and that's not something I usually pay too much attention to. There are some radio staples here that still get played all these years later. Absolutely killer riffs to be found on them. But here's my problem, and it's a big one: Axl Rose sucks. I mean he really sucks at singing. I hate his cartoon high voice and that perfect for parody warble shit that he does (think of the "where do we go now?" part on Sweet Child of Mine) He brings down every song. Everyone else in the band is great. Aside from Axl's suckiness I found that the non-hits arent particularly memorable. Its a bit too long as well. Those classic riffs make me give this a 3, but I debated a 2 because it's really overrated. Did I also mention that Axl Rose really sucks?

I was honestly not expecting track 2 "It's So Easy", it's so far off of the sound that you normally hear from the radio for them. It honestly feels like it's trying to step into the Grunge genre. So far other than track 2, this album has felt like it's just themes on a single song. They're very tuned into what their "sound" is and they don't seem to deviate from it.

A mix of songs I really enjoyed with some I would leave off of a playlist. I knew beforehand that I like most of their radio singles, especially from this album. I also knew I didn’t like Axel’s voice much. I dig the instrumentation enough to mostly make up for my dislike of Axel’s voice. Just good old fashioned headbanging high gain rock. I like this more than most hair metal because it feels more loose and almost like punk hair metal, at least in attitude. Overall a good album but it’s unlikely I revisit it as a whole. I’ll hear the singles many more times; during any given football game I’m certain to hear the stadium play Sweet Child Of Mine (and We Will Rock You, Freebird, and Seven Nation Army) a dozen times. Apparently critics were ambivalent-to-neutral when this released. Always interesting to see what albums become classics after a rocky reception. Ended up as the 7th highest selling album of all time in the US.

Classic

The hits are great but I was disappointed by the other tunes on the album. I like slash’s playing. Axl Rose is a terrible person.

Guns N Roses came late to the party. They didn’t bring much that was NEW to the table; the ground they trod had already been explored by previous bands like AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Judas Priest, and maybe some of the hair metal bands. But the album is very quality rock, and does basically everything right. It’s good fun

I mean, you can't argue with success I guess. Do I want to listen to it anymore? No but I had a phase. I think there are definite arguments for 4 or 5 but in terms of my enjoyment, it's just "meh".

Nokkrir hápunktar, sérstaklega Sweet Child. Annars frekar meh.

I get why this is on the list, and there are several great/iconic/blockbuster tracks on this album, but as an album it's grating and headache-inducing for me. Not enough variation in the loud guitar metal to keep me engaged, and lots of unmemorable filler tracks. For cultural import and good songs, I'm giving this a 3/5 although my personal review would be more like 2.5.

Nie lubie gunsów

More meh than I was expecting. Thought it would be more like an AC/DC level of rock, it was not.

The one with "Welcome To The Jungle" and "Sweet Child O' Mine", and the album that "put the metal back into hair metal", as one other reviewer said... I'm a little confused, though... Is Guns N' Roses still "hair metal", then? Or just "metal metal"? Nah, they can't be "metal", they're just cheesy eighties hard rock. And that's still the definition of... "hair metal" to me. But maybe I'm splitting hairs here... Yeah, I know... Rimshot! 😁 What's *really* funny though, is the way that a lot of those 5/5 and 4/5 reviews point out that *Appetite For Destruction* actually has many fillers, especially on side two. My radar senses bad faith fueled by nostalgia, here expressed by that sort of 40-ish, 50-ish white male who would just shrug every time you would report stories to them about Axl Rose indulging in borderline-racist tirades or expressing his spite towards women. There's a good reason Kurt Cobain hated this band. Don't forget that, kiddies... I'm gonna drop the mic now, enough said. Well, I won't exactly do that the way Axl Rose drops the mic after a show, mind you. I don't want any of you to end up with a shiner on their face right after reading my review''. I imagine that when *Use Your Illusion I and II* pops up on the app, I'm gonna select those two as LPs that are at least "historically" important in terms of cultural impact. But honestly, it may seem preposterous to waste any more room on Guns N' Roses beyond that. I'm pretty sure there's a good "metal metal" band somewhere that Dimery and co forgot in their list. So maybe it would be a good idea to use that slot here given to *Appetite For Destruction* for them, don't you think? Number of albums left to review: 712 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 144 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 70 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important):79

Decent album, better than most “hard rock” music that I’ve heard.

Can't deny it's quality, even if I can't stand Axl Rose

i don't love hard rock but this album has some undeniable bangers

I've heard this one before. The whole GNR thing isn't really my thing -- Axl Rose's voice grates on me, but I'll give this another shot. Dunno. Still not really changing my life...

I never would have listened to this much Guns N' Roses voluntarily because they remind me too much of my tacky ass swim coach who made us listen to them during practice, but the album was arite I guess. Top three tracks (in no particular order): Mr. Brownstone, My Michelle, and Paradise City.

Carried by hits, but is still a good album

Some absolute classics and pure hits of nostalgia on this one - ‘Paradise City’ was the soundtrack to a racing game I played religiously on the PS3. Fond memories aside, the gems do shine bright enough here to carry (but not cover up) how repetitive the rest of the track list is. It’s hard not feel a little disappointed when the absolute fucking ripper that is ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ segues into a tepid rock-101 track, especially as the lyrics start to tend towards overly edgy.

This was pretty fun, but it does quickly become more of the same. It also doesn't help that I am so sick of Paradise City - although admittedly that isn't Guns N' Roses' fault. I'm not likely to listen to this again, except maybe Welcome to the Jungle.

Ægte rock n roll, der bliver skreget igennem, men man kender dem jo godt

Three really great songs and you’ve already heard them.

Classic arena rock, slash carries the album

It has hits and people like it. I am just not one of those people 😂

Fun, but I already knew the hits and they’re the ones I would listen to again.

I'm down for an album length guns n roses best of... but an album was tough. I think everyone is allowed to like one glam metal band more than they deserve, and mine is motley crüe. Sorry Axl. But the highs are high

Some good some bad. 3/5

I feel like my rating for this album is probably influenced by Axl Rose being a dick but whatever. I don't like this album that much regardless. 3 stars

Maybe I'd give it a 4 if I hadn't heard many of these songs played to death on the radio?

A couple huge hits, some oddly aggressive lyrics, many tasty licks. Not bad.

I already know and love welcome to the jungle and sweet child o’ mine. I feel like it’s really difficult to never hear those songs because they’re just so popular, and for good reason. For some reason I wasn’t expecting all the swearing. Maybe I’ve just never paid attention to the lyrics before. I also kind of recognized paradise city. I was doing some research on the band though and I’m a bit confused about the current lineup. Why is there a girl who is 30 years younger than the other members there? Obviously not relevant to this album, but I think it’s weird that that’s what they’ve resorted to at this point in time. I’m surprised that sweet child o mine has more streams that welcome to the jungle. I would have guessed that it would have been the other way around. I also hate looking up bands like this and seeing how old they are now. Obviously that’s what happens, but it still kind of creeps me out. Anyways about the music of this album… it definitely didn’t live up to my expectations, but I feel like since it’s not music I listen to normally it would probably take me multiple listens to grow to like these types of songs anyways. I looked up online at all the really great reviews of this album and how it’s like the greatest debut album of all time. I also didn’t know it was their debut album, which is impressive even if it’s not quite my style. For some reason I thought that they debuted a lot earlier. The beginning of you’re crazy sounds a bit like welcome to the jungle to me. Unfortunately I didn’t find any new songs to add to my playlist this first listen-through. I like that squeaky balloon sound at the beginning of anything goes. Okay I take it back I added anything goes to my playlist.

It's an iconic sound, but a very repetitive one at that.

S Tier = Welcome to the Jungle; Sweet Child o Mine A Tier = Mr. Brownstone; Paradise City B Tier = Nightrain; Out Ta Get Me; My Michelle C Tier = It’s So Easy; Rocket Queen D Tier = Think About You; You’re Crazy; Anything Goes

Came for “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Paradise City”, and “Sweet Child O’ Mine”…stayed because I had to hear the rest of the album. While this wasn’t a usual listen for me, I could see the appeal throughout the rest of the songs found here. It’s hair metal at its best, and it’s fun to hear Axl shred lyrics, while Slash equally shreds on the guitar. Though outside of the three big hits, the other songs are more on the “meh” side of things. Fun fact, this takes me back to working at Walmart almost 20 years ago, where a coworker who worked electronics would play a greatest hits daily on loop. I hated Guns N’ Roses hard after a week or so of this. Years later, I almost understand what drew him to this tour de force of a band.

Lots of hair metal meets hard rock here. Definitely see some early hard rock DNA in here that would go on to influence modern bands.

Not as bad as I thought but also his voice is so blegh

3.5 definitely

3 definitely thought it would be a lot worse. Holy fuck am i sick of these hits though

80s rock in all its excess. There's no mistaking that Guns n Roses sound. One of the best rock vocalists and lead guitar.

if you'd asked me what i think of appetite for destruction before i'd started this list i would have said its top drawer without having listened to it for years. now that i've had to endure loads of hair metal thanks to this list i have developed an aversion to cheesy squealy cock rock. some huge tracks on here but a full album is too much.

Ergh...so like am I supposed to listen to this seriously? It does have 3 absolute monsters on there. Whether that's good or bad, I don't know.

Meh. Welcome to the jungle is obviously a banger. It's so easy is bad. I feel like there are four good songs on this album. The rest get by on Axel's unique voice.

I did not like this album or GnR when it came out. Took my probably at least 10 years after to release to listen and like it. I will admit I love the solo on Sweet Child, and I like Rocket Queen and My Michelle but still absolutely despise Welcome to the Jungle and Parisade City.

Pretty straightforward rock & roll. Good guitar solos and licks, with SCoM being the standout. Progress from the 80’s hair metal, adding some grittiness. Not a fan though.

Some real highs and lows. Sweet Child, Welcome to the Jungle, and Paradise City still hold up. the rest of this album feels like filler. Maybe in 87 it didn't sound like bloated garbage.

Heard it

Some classic tracks on here of course. It can get a bit much listening to a whole album of it, but still pretty enjoyable

Pretty fun

Used to love this album as an early teen. I’m not a fan now as I listen to much different stuff but still have a lot of respect for it! Was my fav classic rock band and probably still is. Didn’t really enjoy listening to it as it’s not my thing anymore but some nostalgia there.

Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child Of Mine are all fantastic era-defining anthems, but the rest of the album is kind of mid. Same kind of thing as Slippery When Wet

05/16/22

Great vocals, great guitar playing, great production but overall only ok-ish songs. The well known singles 'Welcome to the Jungle', 'Paradise City' and 'Sweet Child O' Mine' are easily the standout tracks.

MORE COWBELL!

Pièces préférées: Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City

It's got some really impressive hits, no joking about that. However, I feel Axls voice super fucking grating. To the point I found it hard to make it all the way through this one.

Idk 3? Probably 4, but goddamn have I heard these songs a lot of times. Great energy though. It's not popular for nothing.

Dancing with Mr Brownstone... Probs their best release.

Tenacious D should sue these guys for ripping them off.

Everything about Appetite for Destruction, from the skulls on the cover to the solos on the album, is incredibly dated. You couldn't have made this album a few years earlier, or a few years later. As such, it exists as this near-perfect time capsule of 1987 cock rock. It's also the best example of the genre - I've always had more time for this album than anything by AC/DC or the like. "Sweet Child O' Mine" does absolutely blow everything else on the album out of the water, though.

Very good for a hair metal album

Beyond the 3 staple tracks, there isn't much here beyond generic rock. Some of the numbers almost sound like production library tracks and although the staples are now way overplayed, 'Paradise City' is still an absolute tune.

Re-listen, meh.

Not my thing, but i appreciate it is quite fun, esp. Sweet Child of Mine. The sort of thing that they would play on Waynes World.

An old friend, still sounds as good as it did when I was 18, perhaps a bit juvenile, but does that matter. Side 1 is streets ahead of side 2.

As a Nirvana diehard, this cannot, and isn't, my cup of tea.

Cool album with some good songs not my cup of tea but can't ignore the greatness

Not normally my bag. For certain I know this record from the inescapable radio and MTV rotation, and probably Beavis & Butthead. One is welcome to adore acid distressed vocals and bleach-blond jeans without apology.

Can remember liking this at the time of release but now those whiny vocals really do start to grate. Its So Easy & Mr Brownstone still sound great but hard to listen to it all the way through.

Definitely a classic, but not the entire album. Some huge huts on this album and pure rock 'n' roll, but some songs are lacking, and the overall sound starts to get repetitive.

I don't know. It's a classic album but didn't do much for me. Guns N Roses is a good band, they just don't do much for me. Fave track: Welcome to the Jungle

Doesn’t hold up

This sounded very exciting when I was fifteen (tbh I don't think I heard this one back then, except for the hits. I definitely had Use Your Illusion on tape. I and II). It still sounds quite exciting but also bloated and a bit silly. 7/10

It's quality music, but I don't like it that much

Fire sange var værd at høre: Welcome to the jungle Paradise City My Michelle Sweet Child O' mine Men tre ud af fire (Bortset fra My Michelle) havde jeg hørt før. Så måske skyldes det den auditive deca-effekt.

“A unique mix of different rock values… speed and musicianship, flash and dirt… it changed hard rock's sensibilities at the time.”

Loud, boisterous. Lacking in variety. Some great tracks sprinkled in with standard hair metal.

No better than any other band's album at the time.

Absolutely classic singles but questionable non singles.

Songs Known Before: Welcome to the jungle, Pardise City, Sweet Child O' Mine Favorite: Sweet Child O' Mine

meh 3/5. I thought I knew the album, but turns out I only know the hits

3 great songs (Jungle, Paradise, Sweet Child), not much else.

This album pretty much represents GNRs legacy to me. Which is balls to the wall power, great solos and a crop of great singles. However like this album, GNR are also extremely overrated. A fair bit of the album tracks were cheesy hair metal that should stay in the late 80s. It stands out to a lot of people and I love some songs like Welcome To The Jungle, but as an album I simply couldn't get into it.

Rockin…. 🧥

An album with three amazing singles, and not much else.

Undeniably one of the greatest album openers of all time. A lot of the rest is just a lot of your typical cock rock of the 80's. I mean, everyone knows GnR. I liked it.

Reminds me of the uncool kids at school.

This was a complicated listen. I thoroughly enjoyed it but the artist's personal life ruins it some.

Solid Rock

Classic, but out dated.

Yeah I remember seeing them back in 2018. They were okay, Greta van Fleet was way better.

Other then three classic songs the rest of the album sounds the same

Some good recognisable songs Enjoyable album. His voice can get a little grating

Classic singles and good filler tracks.

Good album, not as good as I remember it but good none the less. Really rocking it but I don't like the production that much

Respect what it is/did in rock, but not really my thing aside from the few big hits.

Q: how many good songs makes a classic album? A: 2, apparently (plus a couple of reasonably good songs) Couldn't remember anything else from this. A very distinctive overall sound, but aside from the obvious contenders for classic status, the material is very weak and mostly just about saved by Slash's savage guitar. Admittedly a cut above the opposition, but that's not saying much. I love Sweet Child and Paradise city as much as anyone and have been trying unsuccessfully to play them for years, but as to the rest, if I never heard it again that would be fine with me. Fast coming to the conclusion that there are very, very, very few albums that are consistently worth listening to.

All songs sound the same but there are a few good classics

Góð nostalgía, mörg góð lög en vantar upp á heildina.

Some good tunes but overall it's not my cup of tea. Bar a couple of songs i wouldn't listen again.

never been a GnR fan but i guess this is the good one

Overrated.

It has some good songs but guns and roses is one of those bands that are better in small quantities rather than listening to a whole album. 3RS

Very solid, would rate it 3.5/5.

Pss no me convence

It's much as I remembered it. One good album, then 30 years of WTF.

regular

I find it hard with this one. I have memories of absolutely loving this as a teenage and thinking it was simply brilliant. I don't enjoy it that much now. But does that mean it's a bad album? I am so confused

it's hard to separate this album from the punk-ass bitch that axl is. welcome to the jungle was edgy and energetic in its time... i don't think i need to hear it again. brownstone, paradise, sweet child and rocket queen hold up better. interesting to read that it took this album over a year (june '87 to late '88) after release to find its popularity

Fun album from my youth.

Not my thing but I get why it's so popular.

Not really my style -- funky and metallic, without much lyrical substance or 'groove'. It just felt empty to me and a bit boring. Some cool moments, but overall not my thing. Hard to get through the whole album, tbh

Good enough

wow oh wow - never played from start to end all the way through before - so good but also so many unnecessary side comments and moaning xxx sounds/ lol

I do like the hits Paradise City and Sweet Child - but the rest of the album is a bit flat and similar

Undeniably important, but hair metal sucks and Axl's voice is annoying.

Decent

there is nothing special about the average song on this album and its big hits are just decent, I can have fun listening to welcome to the jungle, paradise city or sweet child o' mine but all of them are songs I'm likely to skip halfway through tbh

This album is so annoying. Apart from a couple of songs (welcome to the jungle & paradise city) it just irritates me with its fake rebellion of the status quo. Also Axl Rose has an annoying voice

The opening riff is iconic then it quickly goes downhill with 52 minutes of toxic masculinity

I love Slash's guitar playing. I don't like Axl Rose as a singer at all. Good meat and potatoes rock'n'roll. In the words of one of the more astute reviewers, "pretty average."

They were popular but never with me. Added “Sweet Child O Mine” to my playlist.

Hits are listenable otherwise this is just not my type of music - also I know this shouldn’t play into it but the album cover is ugly

This album is like being cut off in traffic by some obnoxious douche in a ute with tinted windows. The ute doesn’t have a speck of mud on it, because the driver has never swung a hammer or worked the land in his life.

extra star for sweet child of mine

Gosh I cannot stand hair metal. Respect for having like 5 songs on your debut album still be songs 99.9% of people still know 40 years later.

Never been a fan, although I’ll admit that the “big” songs are decent. Favourite track: Welcome to the Jungle

A band who’s legend looms a lot larger than their music.

This will be one of my hot takes I guess... But I can't stand Guns N' Roses. I don't know if it's just because it's so overplayed or just my hate for the vocals, they are very annoying.

This album used to get played almost daily on my school bus back in the 90's. I think there is much to be said for listening to this album through a shitty cassette player and rattly bus speakers because listening now with decent headphones it is all a bit polished and hollow. It sounds manufactured. Maybe I'm just cynical. It's clearly a classic, but it sounds much better in my memory than it does 30 years later.

Appetite for Self-Destruction. Pretty horrible and cliched. I hope tomorrow's album is better than this.

I just don't think I'm angry enough for this music. I do remember, "Nightrain" and of course, the iconic, "Sweet Child Of Mine" from when this band was popular. The opening sequences from "Swet Child Of Mine" were instantly recognizable. Still, I'm not a fan. I wasn't one then, and I'm not one now. The one surprising song for me was, "Mr. Brownstone" as I hadn't heard it before and I didn't actually hate it.

I had to listen in chunks to be able to manage Axel's screeches, but the angst is powerful

Not a big fan of the guns but it’s a legendary album

A symbol for american identity

2018 remaster

Ok but I've never been a big Guns fan.

Pretty good listen, I'll give it like a 4/10, not a massive rock fan but I can definitely appreciate the riffs and Axl's vocals (who doesn't), highlights are 'Sweet Child O' Mine' (obviously), 'Welcome To The Jungle', 'Rocket Queen'. Low-light is probably 'My Michelle'. Was playing 'Pizza Game' same time as listening, what a good pairing (the climaxes of the song sometimes fell in sync with the game).

Some nice songs but a bit repetitive and boring

ist einfach nicht so meins

Really don't care for Rose's voice. Some solid songs but mostly pretty worn out.

Ett poäng för wellcome to the jungle

In an otherwise trying-to-be-tough album, 'Think Of You' is strangely endearing and candid. Not a massive fan, but they did come out with some of the most iconic riffs.

I hate guns n' roses

Debut album. Featuring green gras and pretty girls.

Sweet Child of Mine, Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City. I'm so bored of hearing these songs. Interesting to hear the other tracks that aren't these stand outs though. Still, not my favourite way to start this journey. 4 out of 10 Artwork review: Crucifix with their skeleton-a-fied faces, one for every band member. They were young when this was released though. Guess I'd think it was cool if I was 22 too.

Not really my sound….seems very dated now too..

Guns N' Roses' music reminds me a bit of KISS, though I was more into KISS than Guns N' Roses, so I'm only giving this album 2 stars. It's not bad music, but it's nothing special to me...

Three hit songs and a bunch of shit I didn't want to listen to

This is a fun album and is obviously influential. I have a bit of a hard time giving it an unbiased listen because of how overplayed many of the songs on this album have become. It definitely has cool elements and is still a fun listen.

Couple real good songs. Enjoyable in the right setting, but I don't think I would regularly sit down and listen to this one front to back. Wouldn't go out of my way to add the vinyl to my collection even though it is a classic in many ways.

wasnt my type of music

not as bad as I remembered but Axl's inststence on adding extra "ay-ay-ays" onto most words ending in y eg "cry-ay-ay, sky-ay-ay" got on my nerves. I can only say: goodbye-ay-ay

Y’all…this is purely stupid trash. Axl Rose’s voice is truly grating and i could not imagine listening to even just this record on a regular basis let alone the bands whole repertoire. If this were just the instrumentals it would still be just okay but definitely a whole lot better. This gets a 2 though for the big singles being at least tolerable and the entertainment value of all of Axl’s weird vocal affectations.

Having welcome to the jungle, paradise city and sweet child o’ mine on one album is crazy. Even if they’re not my thing. The rest of the album all blends into one though.

I have so thoroughly outgrown this band it's insane. I used to love these guys when I was 18 or so. Couldn't get enough of Axl's voice, or their Sympathy for the Devil cover, or just their general vibe. Fast-forward about six years, and I finally heard Appetite for Destruction for the first time in full - I didn't get it at all. How was this something I so thoroughly enjoyed? It was overblown, stuffed with gross lyrics (when they named this blues-tinged offshoot of hair metal "sleaze rock" they weren't kidding), and Axl's voice shot between too nasally and just plain annoying. Five years still later on, revisiting the album for this challenge, I'm left with just as many questions. This band does absolutely nothing for me anymore, and while the three biggest songs on here definitely still have some kind of aura to them, everything else is totally disposable and uncomfortably sleazy for me. I'm gonna be the hater in my group this day - 4/10, because some of the songs are still kind of cool, and no more.

2.3 I've never been able to dig GnR. If we exclude the fact that Axl is a massive bellend then we're still left with a cringe worthy act that are massively overrated. Annoying vocals, simplistic intro riffs, and just a general air of wankery. The only thing saving them is that Slash can really shred in parts. Him in a good band would have been unstoppable. Paradise City and Jungle the only really good tracks here, Sweet Child of Mine is grating after a while and the rest are clear album fillers. Happy to not listen to GnR again after this.

It was a challenging listen overall. I understand it was a debut album and some further refinement and commercial song craft was clearly learned for later albums .. before it all fell apart. But for me there was very little light and shade in the music - it was mostly flat out lthrash, which I guess was the style they were aiming for. It also felt like the three big singles were given much more studio production time and effort than the rest of the album .. combined … so they stick out markedly from the rest. Not a bad effort but I would stick to the greatest hits collection.

The popular songs are bangers. The other songs are generic butt.

Best album ever

Slash Guns and Axl Roses

1987. Debut studio album. Most of the album's themes reflect the band's personal experiences and daily life, including their youth.

Ok someone needs to explain this one to me. Lyrically inane and musically obvious. And it’s not even a “oh but you have to listen to it with 1987 ears” situation because AC/DC was doing this 10 years prior! “Fun” I could see. But “important”? “Classic”?? Why??? 2 stars cuz Sweet Child O’ Mine kinda goes.

Listened previously. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Alright - There are some great songs but an awful lot of forgettable filler. Welcome To The Jungle might be overplayed but it is very good in fairness. I also like Nightrain and have since I was about 8. SCOM is iconic but I would be very happy if I never heard it again and Paradise City is fine I guess. I understand this album being on the list but not brilliant for me. Anything Goes is alright.

If power chords and cowbell are your thing, this is the album for you.

Won't listen again on purpose

I can see why people love it but it just ain’t for me. Welcome to the Jungle is a great opener and Mr Brownstone is pretty good but other than that I was a bit bored. Sweet Child O’ Mine is what Proud Mary is to Middle Aged white women but for smelly grebs.

Putting my biases out in the open here: When this album came out in 1987 I was a kid, but I was into skateboarding. Skateboarding was a huge influence on my musical tastes. Thrasher Magazine at the time, which I bought and read, had interviews and features on punk and hardcore bands; there were ads for Black Flag and Misfits t-shirts; Thrasher produced those Skate Rock tapes (the Noise Forest volume with that Pushead art!). The pokey little town where I grew up transformed the curling rink into a skatepark filled with half and quarter pipes in the summer, and punk and hardcore was always blasting in there. This was also a time of musical tribalism, and so while I was too young to be involved in all of that stuff, there were always rumours of fights going down between the skaters and the rockers. Guns n' Roses was of course rocker music. Those were the guys who were going to beat you up for riding a skateboard, and, fairly or not, the band has always carried that association to me. So I am predisposed to not like this, and even though I'm trying my best to listen to it with an open mind, I still don't like it. G n' R is a tight band, but this to my ears sounds like an amped up version of 70s butt rock that I also dislike. I guess in the context of the hair bands coming out of LA at the time I can see the appeal, this is tougher and ballsier and bluesier and more nihilistic than that stuff; though a lot of great guitarists came out of that era, Slash stands apart from the more technically-inclined shredders. But it's still all music for dudes who read guitar magazines. I wish there were more good riffs in here. I don't like Axl Rose's vocals; I like his lyrics less. I get they're trying to portray this gritty life of drugs, booze, and sex, but it doesn't do much for me, doesn't give me any kind of insight or understanding into living that kind of life.

Very horny. Driven by singles.

Nada aqui me causou repulsa semelhante ao disco Highway To Hell do AC/DC. Aquele sim eu achei verdadeiramente intragável e tive que me esforçar pra conseguir finalizar. 2/5

Drunk festival music. Loud, chaotic, just not for me. Makes my ears yearn for silence

To be completely honest this album was just boring a few good songs but overall not eye catching at all.

There’s a reason you usually only hear the choruses of these songs. Genuinely liked It’s So Easy tbf.

I liked this album as a teenager, but then branched out and heard much better music. And then even later I started playing the game Burnout: Paradise City which used Paradise City as the theme song, and I got to the point and am still at that point where I cannot listen to that song anymore. I also don't really want to hear any of the hits on the album anymore either. The rest of the tracks aren't bad, but maybe that's only because I've heard them so few times?

This is the Guns N' Roses album that has all of the songs that I know from them (Welcome to the Jungle and Swet Child of Mine). My first introduction to them is guitar hero. I have never actually wanted to listen to their music beyond those songs but the album is ok! Very white dad rock to me. The instrumentals flowed together and I genuinely thought a couple of songs were just one song.

Not my bag

Sweet Child O Mine is fab. But the screechy vocals are wearing.

Christ on a stick I can't stand G&R. Never have. I'm down for inane rock and roll but good molly there's better inane rock and roll out there. The only reason I'm not giving it one star is the fact that Slash is undoubtably a guitar god. Just wish he played for a different band for this part of his career.

only giving this a 2 bc of welcome to the jungle which i did a dance recital to as a child

Not very good

UNCSLOP

Never really a GnR fan. SCoM brilliant. Rest shouty US soft rock.

Truly an album meant for 12 year olds. When you grow up hearing hair metal as the hardest thing you think GnR is a new face on the genre but hearing it again it just feels as stale as everyone else of that time. That's not to say it's all horrible - the musicianship is awesome and Slash is undeniably good. There's also hints of grunge and rock to come buried deep in the layers of the music. But between that and the god-awful lyrics this just can't hold up anymore.

Unfortunately, one great opening riff doesn’t make for a great album.

What can I say.... this album is what it is. I understand that it is full of 'hits' which is pretty incredible for a debut album but for me personally, I just can't seem to like this band. Never have never will. Welcome To The Jungle is ok but that's as far as a I can stretch in giving them a positive review.

Paradise city

-I don't like this band at all, but I understand why a lot of people do. They were able to transform the Sunset Strip sound (e.g. Crue, Poison, etc) into something a little less plastic. If the major labels never gobbled up the underground (i.e. Nirvana), this probably would have been the dominant sound of the early 90s and we would have seen a million photocopies. Thank G-d that didn't really happen. -Every song is an extremely competent stylistic impression of Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC, Ted Nugent, and/or ZZ Top. There's also a good dose of quasi-Stones/Dolls riffs played through a heavy metal rig. -Axl does his thing, which is really fucking annoying to me. -The guitars are mixed so loud it's like the amp is right next to my ears. Especially Slash's guitar, which is like a 2nd lead vocal on most songs.

Beyond the mammoth singles on this album there isnt a lot to listen to. The voice is grating and the playing is plodding.

3 stars: Sweet Child of Mine > Paradise City > Welcome to the Jungle. 2 stars: Everything else. It’s just not that good.

I'm of a generation where Gn'R were a constant presence in my musical life, at least from my tweens to early twenties. Never listened to an album, though, and on the evidence of a first Appetite listen, I don't think I ever will again. I don't know if it ever sounded like more than a hundred pale imitators and cover bands, but that's what most of it sounds like in 2026. A few shining examples of iconic songwriting aside, it's mostly just a plodding, expired mess of screech and blues rock

I had no appetite for this album when it came out, and it’s aged about as well as a head of cabbage. You know where you are? You’re in one of the circles of hell if they’re making you listen to this. Thank god grunge rendered this laughably cheesy band obsolete. But Axl Rose is a good follow on social media.

Gross man

Just okay.

I unfortunately don’t like this type of music 🙁

The bangers really bang, but the others fall really flat.

Highlights: Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child O'Mine Besides the hits, I feel like this record is just a bunch of slop. It all sounds the same and the vocals get annoying after three songs in a row. For instance "Think About You" was almost 4 minutes of pure ass with no artistic or any other kind of value. It sounded vaguely similar to something I heard just 15 minutes ago. I'm just not impressed and feel like I was justified for not listening to the record in its entirety up until this point. It was kind of funny the way the record turned sexual by the end. Didn't expect that.

Going into this, I thought I didn’t like Guns an’ Roses - now, I know I don’t like Guns N’ Roses. I can respect it for its cultural influence, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Call me simple, but I like music that actually sounds good.

I wanted to like this and gave it the best possible circumstance for listening to it. I hated them in high school and was expecting this would be a revisit where I changed long held beliefs. Nope. All the bad parts of Aerosmith on steroids. Squeely lead singer? Check. Generic blues based soft metal music with pitch perfect sound? Check. Every now and again I'd lock into a guitar riff and think "hey, that sounds good." Then I'd think "Nope, that's a Heart riff" or "That's Ozzie" or "That's (Insert another super famous rock artist from the 70s/80s)". What's good is borrowed. What remains is annoying. Not a 1, but not much higher.

a classic - not sure it aged super well

Really good for the genre but maybe just wasnt in the mood for it. Hard to be objective so ill leave it at 2/5

I understand what it is but it’s not for me

crazy how uncs think that twink white boy was hard

oh no. This is bringing back memories of buying this album as a teenager. I will never forget the disappointment I felt after the high of Welcome to the Jungle wore off. 20 years has not helped me to enjoy this album more.

Had hier geen zin in

rate: 2/5 fav song: think about you I can understand why it’s such an iconic album, however it’s unfortunately not my cup of tea. obviously know sweet child o mine and paradise city but they just don’t massively do it for me. i did enjoy think about you though. also enjoyed rocket queen until the lady started moaning?? mr brownstone also deserves a mention though i need to listen to it a bit more to work out my opinion of it.

it was just okay. the gap between the big hits to it's lesser songs is quite big. The album does not flow well either. Not to take away from their hits, but this album is just meh.

Why is this up here??? It’s got some classic songs and has an unreal intro track. But I really wanted to skip through the rest of it

Wasn’t a fan in 1987. Still not.

paradise city … where the grass is green and the girls aren’t pretty - dad’s lyrics. i’ve heard this song my whole life 😭

just finished listening to the whole album, i only liked a few songs, good music just not my favorite, overall rating 6.5/10.

I have always had a strong dislike for this band. This is just not the type of music that I will ever be able to enjoy. The screeching vocals drive me nuts, the sleazy songwriting makes me nauseous, and the instrumentation is generic. I can at least recognize the commercial prowess of the album though. To have this many hits in a record is impressive.

this band is awful. there's so many radio hits on this album, and they're awful. some of them are dumb in a way that's a little bit funny. the Disturbed ooh wah ah ah ah of 1987. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

My wife is a reformed Guns N Roses fan, and luckily for me we had an hour’s drive yesterday so she had to listen to it with me. She said fairly confidently, “This is really their only good one.” She seemed to know all the words to all the songs. It was something to behold. Anyway if this is their only good one, I don’t think they have any good ones.

Even the hits are annoying. 2/5

Firstly, Axl Rose's voice is intolerable. Secondly, the big songs have been overplayed to death. Thirdly, the majority of the album tracks did absolutely nothing for me. Some good moments of interplay with the bass and guitars, Welcome To The Jungle, despite overplay, is still a banger. Other than that though, did not enjoy this and was bored by the end.

Couldn’t escape this record in my childhood and still find it very grating

This gets two stars just for having "Paradise City" and "Sweet Child" which are GREAT songs but the rest was not for me.

Better than expected some decent song writing but it’s still metal even if it’s metal lite.

Couple of good songs I like. Not my type of music though. 2/5

Guns n' Roses is a band that was hugely successful, but unfortunately for me it's to their detriment. Appetite for Destruction is heavily reliant on its singles, but I have a hard time enjoying any of them because they've all been played to death. Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child o' Mine are decent enough hard rock songs, but they're just too everywhere. The rest of the album isn't great, a lot of fiddling with a very generic screams-of-the-80s sound with a lot of uncomfortably sexual songs that just don't do it for me. While I don't love the sound they're going for, I'll defend it a little from an engineer's point of view. It's very well produced and I think in terms of hard rock everything sounds punchy and full. That being said, it doesn't make up for the fact that the only three songs worth a damn on this whole record have been forever ruined for me by the MLB and 94.7 FM Dad Rock Radio.

Hard rocking and not very deep... but a good vibe overall. Spent many hours listening to this after it came out and remember getting pumped up by most of the songs. It hits different decades later. Less straight up rock, more posturing and pretentious. I can still sing along but don't feel much for it anymore.

Although I consider myself somewhat of a metal fan, there is something I really dislike about 80's heavy metal bands. This is no exceptions.
