Reviews (page 11 of 14)
Trying to put myself into a place to think what it would be like hearing this album for the first time. From the opening welcome to the jungle through Mr Brownstone and sweet child of mine. Now classic it’s hard to imagine how hard they would have hit the first time. Even after repeated listenings throughout my life they’re still great if not a bit overplayed. Solid album.
Super effective at being what it’s trying to be—music for teenage boys of a certain era—even if it does very little for me.
Quite a debut album and I recognize why it's on this list.
I was a pretty big fan of Guns N Roses back in Highschool, which meant that I only listened to the singles so this is my first time listening to this album as a whole. First off, I just can't stand the singles anymore. Whenever I turn my car on it defaults to the radio before my phone connects and I swear 50% of the time it's one of these 3 singles and I just can't stand them anymore. Especially Sweet Child O' Mine; I'm going to lose it if I hear another cover band play this song. The deep cuts are fine, but don't really change my opinion on GnR. They are one of the best Hair Metal bands, but I just can't stand Hair Metal anymore. This would probably be a low 4 if I wasn't so sick of the singles. It's also funny how almost every single 5 I see talks about how they listened to it as a teenager, or how it is nostalgic to them. Mid 3.
Nowt to shout about apart from welcome to the jungle and sweet child of mine
The hits are huge. Inescapable. I do really like Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child O'Mine. I got really into classic rock as a teenager, and these songs definitely made the playlists. At one point I did decide to check out the full album, and I remember I didn't really like it that much. I feel the same way this time. The musicianship is there, but are the actual songs that good? Not in my opinion. If this album was stripped of those 3 songs, what remains would be a 2 or even a 1. So I'm going with a middle of the road 3 on this one.
Good album
Even back when this album came out, I wasn't a fan. The hits are far more fun to play than to listen to, and the deep cuts don't do much for me.
Didn't think an album could start as emphatically as "Nevermind" by Nirvana, but this gives it a run for its money.. and the fact I've been corrected on this point immediately with the next album suggests I actually know fuck all about music. For me the good songs were really good, but a few too many tracks just felt a little flat or like filler and I did drift out from time to time.
Welcome To The Jungle is sensational. What a powerhouse of a song, easily my favourite of theirs. Great big dick swinging, explosive, stadium banger. I love those little notes in the bridge that sound like Slash letting off a Roman Candle. It just makes me want to do the Axl snake hips dance, but alas, I can't do it. It's So Easy, too much cowbell. Nightrain and Out Ta Get Me are a bit too ACDC for me, not my bag. I know Slash had to channel all of his magnificent testosterone somehow, but most songs are overloaded with epic riffs which I believe were played by Slash's cock. Mr Brownstone is alright to bob your head to, until you realise it's entirely derivative of Welcome To The Jungle. Paradise City is a country infused, call to Americana that bleeding heart Midwesterns can all be proud of. Another belter. Slash wanted the lyrics to be “where the girls are fat and they have big titties”, I'm with him. I watched half of G+R at Leeds Festival in 2010, it was basically only Axl in that lineup, I could hear them playing this over LCD Soundsystem, about 13 minutes of huge firework cannons blasting off with every chorus. I drifted off after Paradise City and I'm including Sweet Child O’Mine in that stint, it's been so overplayed and covered, I don't think I can hear it objectively anymore. There was something electric about this debut, sleazy, sex crazed, scruffy yet preened image, symbolic cover art, it all comes together in quite a cinematic way. I always associate G+R with 80s and 90s blockbusters, not just for soundtracking Terminator and Interview with a Vampire, but also because this style of music was used widely across the Action genre at the time. I think the weaker songs only earn this album a 2, but I'm bumping to 3 because of Slash's big cock, I mean hat.
No me interesan. Gran éxito que no comparto
The guitars are great, the songs are interesting, and there are a lot of classics on this album. I cannot get over how much I hate Axle's voice. I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate his voice.
For the fact that it produced 2 all time massive hits Sweet Child of Mine and Parade City I'll give this a 3
Dont care
6/10 - There were some decent songs. All of the songs I knew I at least sort of enjoy listening to. I think if I had never heard any of theses songs then I would have rated it lower.
I had a GNR phase growing up but the hits off this are so burnt out. I'm very tired of their sound at this point but the deep cuts were more enjoyable and the album is a good package.
Yeah they kick ass, but I can’t stand Axl’s upper register. The hits are hits for a reason, the other songs are very much worth forgetting unless your coked out of your mind at a rock club.
not really my style, but Slash’s guitar playing is INSANE so i gotta give credit for that
-this is not really my number one choice in music. that being said. it has some very impressive vocal work and some of the songs hit sooo hard -my god Welcome To The Jungle… phenomenal anthem. makes me want to run people over with a motorcycle -Favorites are Welcome To The Jungle, Out Ta Get Me, and My Michelle
Exactly what I expected from a GNR album. Knew around half the songs but the rest of the album doesn't mix it up all that much. I'd be happy to listen again but don't see myself seeking it out too often.
G&R gives me big American vibes. Sex, rock and roll and not giving a fuck.
I am torn on this as it is emblematic of the unholy trinity of those bands that a certain type of boomer claims is "real music". It sits there along with metallica and ac/dc as that band your middle-aged, Harley-owning step-dad listens to and very little else. Nevertheless, the standout hits are good anthems with an unique unmistakable style. The strongest part of this band is Slash's guitar work on those hits. The in-between songs are quite standard hair-metal songs with lyrics that have not always aged well. If I'm being generous, it is that starting point for a development of a musical taste. But woe befall anyone who doesn't outgrow this.
I generally am very disdainful of sleazy meathead 80s rock/hair metal. But I have always had a soft spot for “Welcome to the Jungle” and especially “Sweet Child o’ Mine”. I simply love these songs. Most of the other tracks on this album I had never heard before, and understandably so. They’re pretty standard issue for the time and place. “Mr. Brownstone” and “Think About You” stood out to me, but for the most part it’s pretty meh. They do have a knack for writing a really satisfying bridge. If not for “Jungle” and “Sweet Child”, this would be a 2 ⭐️ for me, but the strength of those two bumps it up to a 3 ⭐️. YOURE IN THE JUNGLE BABY!!!!!
Full disclosure: This is a much better album than I expected. I've had a lifelong dislike/distain for GnR, and I was *dreading* seeing this come up for my daily album. But... it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. In fact, I would choke back my own bile and say that this might actually be genuinely good. It's got a good sound, Slash is a very competent guitarist, and Axl has more range than you'd expect (granted he spends most of the album sounding like a nasal middle schooler but hey). My rating is me still not wanting to give the band credit (and finding a lot of the lyrics here to be, let's say "disagreeable") but also having to admit this is actually pretty good. Probably not going to listen to it again, though; out of choice.
The three hits from this really carry my enjoyment of it. Those three are very good, but generic, heavy metal or rock songs, while the rest of the album stays generic but is just unmemorable, using the most basic classic rock tropes. 5/10
There are some obvious highlights here, the rest is ok, but nothing earthshaking.
6.5/10. The highs are great but the loss are really bad.
Guns N’ Roses are obviously talented, but this just didn’t do too much for me outside of “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine”.
Okay....own it ..never listen to it...that's it
It has its moments. Doesn’t his throat hurt?
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. This kind of ultra-macho guitar hero rock isn't even remotely my kind of stuff. But I have to admit, when it's well made, it's well made. Many great and iconic tunes here, and the deep cuts aren't too shoddy either. Key tracks: Welcome to the Jungle Paradise City Sweet Child O' Mine
Tracks reviews (my favourite segment): 1. Welcome to the Jungle - This is the most unserious song, and I love it for that, but in reality it isn't that good lol / 2. It's So Easy - It's a groove but the lyrics are vain and dogshit. In a funny way though. Very unserious song. / 3. Nightrain - what the fuck did he mean by this??? :skull: ALSO UNSERIOUS, I'm seeing a pattern... / 4. Out Ta Get Me - unserious, you get the idea / 5. Mr. Brownstone - idk man same thing / 6. Paradise City - I've obviously heard this before and it is of course also unserious but not really in the same way idk. Could go hard on a roadtrip on the radio but not really my jam. / 7. My Michelle - lmao / 8. Think About You - When you take away the funny you get corny lyrics and mid music / 9. Sweet Child O' Mine - Probably the most unique song so far (and the best). It isn't the greatest song ever and is the definition of overrated, but honestly, it's aight. 10. You're Crazy - he's yapping up a storm on this one 11. Anything Goes - LMFAO (I was going to leave the review at that but I wasn't paying attention at the start and then noticed that the squeaky sound is him fucking on a squeaky ass bed which is hilarious) / 12. Rocket Queen - they gotta be joking this ts istg / Overall, as my track reviews make obvious, this album is very unserious. That is not necessarily a bad thing, though here's what I have to say: I think that GNR makes funny songs on purpose, but I also find them more funny and the serious parts funny because, in their nature, I can't take them seriously. I think it's partly due to Axl's voice. When you take away the lyrics (which are really bad btw, but funny) you get very mid rock. It isn't good, but I really enjoyed it anyways, laughed quite a bit. I'm going to give it a 3, but you have to take it with context.
I don’t really know what to make of this one. I was expecting to find myself not liking the songs I had never heard before, expecting them to be a lot weaker than the huge singles they released. Not sure why I had that opinion. There were some weak songs but also a few that I quite enjoyed. I don’t imagine it’ll be on my playlist much though.
No doubting the riffs and the voice but still a big hair band. Passed me by at the time, only aware of their singles so Nightrain was a revelation.
Couple jams but man do I dislike metal.
The known songs, and there were lots of them, were great. The rest, less so.
i like rock. pretty good. picky about lyrics though...
Favourite song - Welcome to the jungle
This is an existential crisis as a music reviewer. It just doesn't feel like something like this was ever designed to be evaluated? Yet, here we are. It is genuinely astounding the level of success they found on a debut album, with 3 singles clearing a billion spotify streams, and that's part of the issue for me. I came into this album already tired of it, in a genre that was tired before I was even born. I can't find anything wrong with it, the songs are varied and clever, the instrumental sounds and vocals are unique and play well together, I just cannot find it in my heart to care about this album and that's on me. There were a handful of tracks that I had never listened to in here, and of them "Think About You" is my favorite despite a bland start. I found myself subtly head banging to a rift with a surprisingly post-punk influence in the chorus. Ultimately, I won't be returning to this album intentionally but I think I can listen to it a little more favorably when I inevitably hear it out and about. The musicianship and creativity is undeniable, I'm the problem. 3/5
Would've been much better withour Axl. Sorry man, just kind of my opinion.
It's fine. I'm always a sucker for Sweet Child of Mine when it comes on, and I like Mr. Brownstone, so I was actually kind of excited to listen to the whole album. It was fine. Nothing particularly caught me. It just made me want to listen to Alice in Chains instead.
Despite the band’s clarification that I was in the jungle, I’m not sure where I stand with this one. Rating it a three feels like a bit of a cop-out, since there were some truly delightful parts and some truly idiotic parts, and I want to settle on a two or a four. Ultimately, I must ask ‘where do we go now?’ and then screech a bunch.
Favorites: Welcome to the Jungle, Out ta Get Me, Sweet Child O' Mine, My Michelle, You're Crazy Kinda liked this as a change of pace. Not sure I'd reach for it on my own. Axl Rose's vocalizations are a hoot; he really goes all out! I mean, it's an energetic album, you gotta give it that. The songs I liked best were the ones that made me laugh a lil bit (except for Sweet Child O' Mine, which I've always had a soft spot for). 3 stars.
Overall a pretty good album with some classics and a couple others that still sound just a little unpolished.
A classic album for sure but over time have really come to dread Axl rose's voice. Some of the lyrics oof haha
This sounded very exciting when I was fifteen (tbh I don't think I heard this one back then, except for the hits. I definitely had Use Your Illusion on tape. I and II). It still sounds quite exciting but also bloated and a bit silly.
Good, but doesn’t age super well.
I can see why it sold bucketloads. The songs are catchy, the playing is good, the singing is, at least, interesting. However, it remains manufactured pap of the worst kind.
Not really my style but pretty catchy 80s fun, I'd listen for sure
Other than the "hits", Paradise City, Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child O'Mine, I didn't feel there was much to offer on this overly long album. Of course, I prefer my heavy metal/hard rock in smaller doses...
I own this album on vinyl and I wanted to like this more than I do. I think the substance abuse I know the GNR guys were doing has dampened my enthusiasm for their music over the years, as it kinda just makes me sick to hear most of it. I still love Sweet Child O' Mine, Paradise City and Welcome to the Jungle, because I know them so well, but most of the other tracks are just a reminder of their awful (IMO) lifestyle and just makes me depressed to listen to. I've only listened to my copy once and I may end up selling it because I'm not sure I'll ever want to listen to it again. :(. Three stars.
the hits are hits, but the rest of the album feels pretty much like the same song
é bom mas não é o melhor dos Guns
Pretty rockin' album! Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child O' Mine are classics. I had not listened to My Michelle before and enjoyed it.
First time listening to this album though I've heard their songs before. Enjoyed the classic rock vibe! Their popular songs are the best but there aren't many clunkers on this album.
Sudore e spettacolo. Mi stava stufando ma poi fortunatamente è partita sweet child o' mine.
Not my cup of tea but a noteworthy album for sure
It was fine. Classics were there they were fun. Heard them all before though.
Axl rose is such a douche
Meh. I never listened to GnR beyond the radio singles, and after finally listening to this album I feel like the singles are the only songs worth anything. The album’s not bad per se, but all of the songs sound very similar. A lot of them have cool intros but then the main song starts and it’s just more of the same. It’s like AC/DC — if you’ve heard one of their songs you’ve pretty much heard them all. The last couple of songs are slightly different, but the lyrics are bad. There’s not much substance to this album lyrically. Sex, drugs, and rock n roll. Also, who thought the line, “Cause I can turn on anyone/Just like I turned on you/I’ve got a tongue like a razor, a sweet switchblade knife” was sexy? Yeesh. While I was listening to this I had an epiphany that Axl sounds like Elmo doing his best Ann Wilson impression, and I will never unhear it now. 3/5 — basically one point for each of the singles.
Disclaimer: I'm not really looking forward to this one... Track 1: Welcome to the Jungle (9/10) I want to try and judge these songs as they are but it's difficult when some of them have been so grossly overplayed throughout my life. With that being said, I do think this is a pretty great song overall. Slash is a great soloist and Axl's voice fits the song nicely, I just hate all the moaning he does. The bridge before the last chorus is the best part. I never want to hear this song again. Track 2: It's So Easy (6/10) Duff is the secret weapon for GnR and I love that he gets a great bass intro this early into the album. The rest of the song does nothing for me until Slash's solo. Track 3: Nightrain (6/10) The lyrics are so generic, it gives me a headache. However, I really liked the instrumentals. Once again, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I hear people praising Axl's vocals cause most of the time he sounds like a dying cat to me. Track 4: Out Ta Get Me (4/10) A song so generic that I zoned out and had to restart it. I still don't remember anything about it. Track 5: Mr. Brownstone (9/10) This has always been the one GnR song that I've never gotten tired of and I still stand by that statement. I actually adore Axl's vocal delivery in this song and the chorus is so much fun! Track 6: Paradise City (9/10) I remember seeing Slash live in the 9th grade (a long time ago) and being so hyped that he closed the show with this one. It's my favourite riff in their discography and another song where I don't hate Axl's vocals. It's horribly overplayed now though. Track 7: My Michelle (8/10) That riff made me do a hardcore stinkface lol easily the best song I hadn't heard so far. I wouldn't mind hearing this one if it came on the radio. Track 8: Think About You (7/10) I had my foot tapping with this one! Pretty good song overall, not something I see myself listening to all the time though. Track 9: Sweet Child O' Mine (5/10) I'll give this song the credit it deserves. The opening riff/bass interplay is incredible. I hate everything else and I'm not sure if that has to do with it being the single most overplayed song on the planet. It's hard to listen to it objectively cause rock radio has ruined what I genuinely think could be a good song. Maybe I'd rate it higher otherwise. Track 10: You're Crazy (5/10) Another forgettable song that I have nothing to say about it. I guess the guitar work is good but that goes without saying. Track 11: Anything Goes (3/10) What is with the squeaking in the beginning? The lyrics are gross and the music is boring. Track 12: Rocket Queen (6/10) Another song where Duff gets to show off! I don't think it's a great album closer though. Overall: 6/10 I don't hate this album. The high points are incredible (even if I'm sick of hearing them) and the lows make me either cringe or fall asleep. It's still the best thing that GnR ever released and I believe it deserves to be in this list for it's cultural impact alone. Fav Song: Mr. Brownstone Least Fav Song: Anything Goes
How did I avoid ever hearing this entire album? My brother owned it and I am familiar with exactly 5 tracks which are classic and the rest is ... odd. They're really just a bluesy rock bar band with an inventive lead guitarist and some dude screaming while just BARELY staying on key. Kind of a boring album tbh. This is probably why it was overlooked for a year before hitting.
Some great hits and some major misses for me.
There are no dull moments on this album, but it’s just not my kind of thing. Sweet Child Of Mine is 5/5 and there are some other great songs, but a full album of Guns n Roses is a little too much for me to bear. Under the right circumstances, I would agree that the album is 5/5. But I gave it a few tries and I just couldn’t get into it.
I get it, it's "important" or whatever. I just can't care.
My natural disposition is to choose not to listen to this. I won’t turn off the hits if they come on the radio, the sad thing being I seem to know all the words. This week I certainly wasn’t in the mood to listen to it so I waited until I was open and receptive. However, my appetite for this has not been stimulated but I admire their talent for a catchy tune.
The hits are good but the other sounds were mid.
Great tracks on this one. Also some boring tracks. Sweet child o’mine is always a banger
Still good rocking
A fun and silly and rocking album for sure. Yes I was embarrassed to listen to it at the office, but I can't deny how incredibly influential some of these songs were. Not my cup of tea exactly, but couldn't give it less than a 3/5 for that ! Listening notes: lol alright here we go I guess. first album on here that came out the year I was born :) Didn't realize their debut album had all these hits! Welcome to the Jungle: ok dang we're in it. Though as a Cardinals fans this opening guitar riff is just Mark McGwire walking out to bat. You know where you are?? you're in the jungle baby!! you're gonna die!! This song rocks lol It's kinda crazy how different Axl can make his voice sound. I didn't believe it was him singing on some of these tracks. Paradise City! this will forever be interweaved with Can't Hardly Wait for me. Sweet Child of Mine guitar melody.. so iconic. Big Guitar Hero energy for me. Rocket Queen.. alright we got sex sounds
Kinda sounded all the same
there was a time i would have given this more stars
this album is the magnum opus of butt rock. an album so devoid of anything other than the worst most annoying tendencies of 80's rock. an album that feels like a parody of the very genre it seeks to be apart of. it deserves five stars in it's effort to be the lowest common denominator, and one star for the void of any true meaning. an album of nothing and everything. the worst pop tendencies of metal and hard rock. truly garbage that stands as a monument to what the 80's were.
so many hits on 1 album...
Big, dumb, fun. Well achieved standard rock. You can see how they took from the prog/psychedelic end of things and set it straight.
couple bangers but idc
Izzy Stradlin. Brother…I was not familiar with your game. Your playing sounds like the guitar itself is inebriated—someone else here described your playing as louche—but I quite like it. Your rhythm work falls into this odd, but brazen pocket. This was my favorite thing about the album. This is my first, and will probably be my only, time listening to this album in full, but I started to enjoy listening to it the second time through. It was nice to hear the more popular songs within the context of the full album. Slash was great as always. Axl’s singing isn’t as bad as some of the other reviews make it seem 😂 Thankful to have been introduced to Anything Goes and Rocket Queen. 3/5
Honestly not as bad as I expected it to be given it falls directly in that cock-rock/hair-metal genre I hate so much. The singles are classics and still fun, the rest aren't too bad either.
i always hate getting these 80s hard rock albums but i almost always enjoy them. badass af album and pretty fun, although i'll probably never listen to it again
the hits are undeniable but the rest is bad
All the classic Gun N roses songs on this one. Not a bad listen. Reminds me of guitar hero slightly as that is really the only time I previously listened to them. That and the radio. 3.5 stars for me.
Speed! Tempo! Energy! Pretty sure that Paradise City was the coolest song in the world when I was a kid. Sweet Child o Mine will be forever recognizable. Everything else about this album was just fine.
The classics are good and guitar is real solid (thanks Slash). The rest is kinda mid I just really don’t give a shit about hair metal.
this album is just loaded with classics! obviously they're all excellent songs ("paradise city" is probably my favorite) but none of them really speak to me. i don't think i'd seek out this album even though it's an enjoyable listen
Good but just not totally my thing. I like the nostalgia. Many songs are familiar. But I just didn’t really get into it.
Two or three epic tracks, the rest a bit meh
Gear: Hifiman Arya Artwork: ♱💀💀💀💀💀 Mix: 🧏♂️📏🆗 Musik: 🤘🔩🤗🌓😮💨🥱😒 Wertung: 💀💀💀(💀)/5
Couple great songs, the rest are just bleh
Flatter than I remember them.
This album has three good tracks; the remaining ones are either forgettable or just plain horrible. I've got to give it to them, though—they do know how to make an iconic rock anthem. 2.5 stars
un solo tema pasable
It's hard to deny some of the impact of many of these songs, but, also, I feel that the influence of Guns N' Roses has dwindled, at least among the type of music I like. Rose's vocals are grating for me, and a lot of the subject matter doesn't hold up with the hit and classic songs being so overplayed. Overall, I feel that if I ever would choose to listen to GNR, it would be a "greatest hits," as many songs from "Use Your Illusion" I & II would need to be on it, for me.
I can see how this would have been a breath of fresh air in the late 80s. While it still has some of the trappings of hair metal, it is much more raw. Hair metal was very shiny and sleek, it was rock with pop production. This is straight forward rock music with no frills. I’m not gonna say that I’m a huge fan of it, I like a few songs, but mostly it wasn’t my favorite. However, given the context of when this was released I fully understand its inclusion on this list. And Welcome to the Jungle is still one of the best openers to an album, and a debut album at that. That’s the other thing, while this isn’t my favorite music, this is an incredible debut album. These guys came out kicking.
Not a huge fan of GnR, but that’s a kickass debut. Sweet Child O Mine (best song) still holds up and the album would have been even better if they ended it on this one. (3.4*s)
I've never been a big GNR fan. Something about Axl's vocals doesn't land for me and the backing music always sounds "packaged" or something. At one point all the hits from this album were overplayed and overexposed so I got really tired of hearing all of them. I went into this with an open mind and ended up enjoying it more than expected. With some distance between myself and GNR over the last decade I can appreciate Appetite a little more. There is no doubt that there is some good guitar work by Slash mixed with some steady rock from the rest of the lineup. Axl's vocal still annoy but everyone has their own taste. While GNR still isn't for me I can recognize that this album is solid. I can't deny there are a couple of solid radio anthems and even the deep cuts are decent. I can recognize the impact it would have made after it launched GNR. Not something I'll go back to but I won't fault someone if they preach about hot good the album is. To each their own. 2.74 stars
Axl's vocals are terrible... Slash's guitar is amazing.
Several good songs. It was a good album for weekend cleaning.
the singles were really good
Was NOT a fan when this was released. It's definitely grown on me over the years and it certainly rocks. Still, something about it just doesn't fully hit for me. I think it's Axl's voice. I was surprised to recognize EVERY song here despite thinking I'd never listened to this straight through before. It's fine... I like it... I just don't hold it as the rock 'n' roll masterpiece others do. I certainly can't deny that if anything from it starts playing in public, I'll rock along to it.
i would honestly give this a high 3 maybe a 4, i just don’t think guns n’ roses is for me but there were still a lotta bangers on here and i could see a 4 brewing…
Fun and fast
I was never a huge GNR fan, but there are some gems here.
I wouldn’t say it’s great music, but familiar and represents a time.
Four or so absolute classic tracks, the rest is mediocre filler. Hard to rate as a result. If I could give a 3.5 or so, I'd do that, but given that I have to give an even star rating, I think it's closer to a 3 than to a 4.
3 Stars (8/15)
Carataristico
fun. good songs on there. Overall, not what I want to listen to on the regular, but a classic.
Actually enjoyed this album more than I thought. Despite Axl Rose being the worst, and GnR being overrated as hell. Not terrible.
The deep cuts here are really good. Paradise City and Welcome to the Jungle are stone cold classics. Sweet Child o Mine remains a great riff but a subpar song in my opinion. GNR to me is a late 80s, Motley Cru version of Aerosmith, which is a good combo.
This is a bit of a tough one, because on one hand this style of '80s hard rock does very little for me overall, but on the other hand this album has three incredibly iconic songs that are all still basically unavoidable nearly 40 years later. I'll typically try to look more at the whole album if it's just one iconic song, but having three makes it hard to not respect what they're doing. It's pretty much exactly what I thought it would be. Slash jamming on the guitar and a lot of songs that sound like the famous ones (but are worse) for 53 minutes. It apparently was pretty overlooked for about a year after it came out, but eventually became one of the most famous rock albums of all time. I guess I'd say I think this is good but not particularly enjoyable to me. I get the appeal, the musicians are very talented, the few famous songs are so famous that their familiarity is somewhat comforting, and yet I didn't particularly enjoy listening to it despite that. I'm not sure what that means in terms of a star rating, probably a 3-4 I guess. Favorite song: Sweet Child O' Mine Other: Welcome To The Jungle, Nightrane, Mr. Brownstone, Paradise City, Rocket Queen 7/15/24
This album has three huge songs on it: “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City” and “Sweet Child of Mine.” They’re all classics that absolutely rock, though I think I’ve also had plenty of moments in my life where I’ve switched the station when one of these songs comes on. They’re great but overplayed. The rest of this album rocks hard. Lots of guitar shredding and great production that keeps everything in balance. But I guess I thought I’d like this more than I did. I think Axl Rose’s vocals can be a little grating. The album feels like a classic of the genre but it doesn’t rev my engines the way it should. I totally understand why someone else would go nuts for this though — it’s high energy and consistently delivers track after track. I just lean more towards other hard rock and heavy metal bands.
I feel like the popular songs on this album are popular for a reason. The rest I have heard so far are just meh. 4 songs done so far. 3/5
Classic hard rock
I’d like to think if I was alive in the late 80s I’d be listening to better stuff than this
I think there's a time and place for this album, and at those times it's a 5. However, now, with the warm glow of age and experience, this album feels like the audio version of the former player who has been sitting at the bar for six hours and still keeps trying to talk to you.
#47 - many of these are classics now, and it is objectively good music. Not my favourite tho.
A hard rocking album that brought the eighties into the nineties (this and metallicas black album), and started the battle with grunge and alternative.
Another record I loved as a kid but have no interest in now. I get why it is an essential record though, especially for the genre, and it’s influence was as widespread as any. Mad to think they were teenagers when they wrote this. That’s impressive in itself. But, self indulgent solos and cliche lyrics have never really done it for me since leaving my teens. Perhaps it’s everything that followed which made me think this way. I dunno. Either way this did nout for me, but cant deny their talent and impact!
Apart from a couple songs that I recognize from games like Guitar Hero (or Burnout ;)) I haven’t heard a majority of this album, partly, I’ve never been super interested in Guns N’ Roses, but I get the appeal. I feel the big hits like Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise city stand out a ton, but the others are good to, but just don’t hold up quite as ‘hard’ as the rest. 3.1
Я в замешательстве. Лучшая песня - Welcome to the Jungle.
OK, so Welcome to the Jungle is an all-timer if you like rock music, so let's just get that out of the way now. Sweet Child O' Mine is, if you're of a certain vintage, another all-time banger. Now for the rest. I mean, it's hard for me to get the fact that this is the quintessential hair band out of my head, but this is definitely straight ahead hard rock. It's not as hair band-y sounding as, say, Poison, so that' something. Rose's voice gets grating after awhile.
Not my go to genre but still a good record
I felt like I was in my 40s listening to something I felt pressured to like in my teens. It's fine, but you know what you've got here.
Just too darn loud
Having not heard this for years I found this quite disappointing. HFine musicianship but not enough variation. Of its time
It’s okkkkkkk … there are times when their music just hits the exact chord and melody it’s beautiful and fun but when it’s not there I find it very boring and kind of hacky. That being said this album has some absolute bangers including welcome to the jungle, night train, paradise city, and sweet child o’mine
I mean, sure
I appreciate it but I've heard the hits a lot and its not my first go to genre
This album gets a high three from me, almost a four. Paradise City, Sweet Child & Welcome to the Jungle are absolute CLASSICS and while this isn't my favorite style of music in the world, I can't deny their greatness. Also a shoutout to Mr. Brownstone. If I was more of a fan of 80's hair metal, this would likely get five stars from me. Great album.
Pretty standard classic rock. I liked it, and would be happy to listen to this on a road trip with my dad or something. But it still isn’t something I would usually choose to put on.
Can’t stand axl roses singing voice
They say if you start this album when you walk into a Hooters it syncs up with the meal. This album is probably going to change the way I rate albums going forward. I like a couple of these songs, I can't stand Axl Roses voice, but Slash was one of the first guitarists whose melodies I wanted to copy. I remember finding a couple songs on the album boring, and they remained so even now.
I didn’t enjoy the rest of the album like I enjoy certain songs from my childhood. I played some of these on Guitar Hero and had a lot of fun with them then. I don’t like the moaning. Standouts: Welcome To The Jungle, Mr. Brownstone, Paradise City, Sweet Child O’ Mine.
Nreconsyructed overachiever glam metal album with 3 monster songs that rode a wave briefly before the crash. Do I love it? no. Is it a 4. Nah. 3.5
Solid but not doing anything particularly new.
I love this album but the radio has killed it to death.
A high three. Some classics on there and overall an excellent classic rock album. Classic rock just doesn't always do it for me, though.
The hits and a couple of others are obviously classics and to 12 year old me they were even more so but I've heard them all SO MANY TIMES i just can't anymore. It's like watching Goodfellas, it's an absolute classic but when it's on itv 3, I'll turn to a different channel. I cant get anything more from it. 3 stars for nostalgia and how I felt as a kid.
3.5*
gay but okay
quintessential 80s rock
Good, but a little hard core.
Surprisingly good, unexpected amount of cursing, which felt weirdly modern. Sort of bored by the end but glad to have listened. Didn't hate, but wouldn't probably listen again.
Pretty good
With just a percentage less conviction, the whole thing would fall apart. But, as it stands, they got all-timer performances out of their vocalist and lead guitarist, with a producer who managed to wrestle it all out of them.
Nice
3/5. I do appreciate the unique vocals and the hits go so hard but otherwise it feels like a very generic stadium/heavy/glam rock album. It's not bad but can get old fast especially with similar sounding songs in a row. Guitar is a highlight though but vocals can get annoying by the end of it. Best Song: Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O' MIne
Enjoyed this more than I expected. Similar to AC/DC. Lots of variety to the songs. Not just filler between the classics.
3 good songs
5.5/10
I just love Slash as a cultural touch point - Slash doing a solo during "I'm Just Ken" at the Oscar's was a delight.
Engineered for radio and pop metal longevity even though the band broke some ground with this recording I could never escape the idea that Welcome to the Jungle was just GNR’s version of Queen’s Let Me Entertain You. Slash’s style is clear but my focused listening to this gave me a new appreciation for McKagan’s bass lines that are ripped straight out of punk. I loved hearing his energy on this album. You can tell he comes by that style honestly. Axl Rose doesn’t excite me much and ending the album with a porn film vocal track is…a choice.
This one speaks to my younger self, and its first tastes of freedom. Back then this hit me like a ton of bricks. I did not speak the language, did not understand the words. But I heard this sound, and was angry and furious and dangerous. It broke a wall in me, and I knew I wanted more. This was one of my first "chosen" records, bought with my own money, and I played constantly. My parents hated it, and I loved that they hated it, because that meant that I now had a life separate from theirs. It was a transgression, that pointed the way towards autonomy, and it was as loud as I was quiet then. I did not need to be angry, because Axl was. 30+ years later the agression, the anger is still here. The band is TIGHT. Stuck together by sweat, attitude and an all-consuming lust for life. And they also constantly sound on the verge of explosion. They seem to be tethering on the edge between just enough rope to hold the songs together and utter chaos. It made me think a lot of the NY Dolls, but on a darker side. It is also an underdog record, in that the characters are misfits and live in the margins of society. Both bands live in a violent world, but where there is a spirit of community in the Dolls music and attitude, there is none of that in AFD. Everything seems to be a zero-sum game, where the narrator of the songs is alone and where outside of sex, drugs and rocking out, there is only fear. And women often lose. This is a violently misogynist record. AFD is a record made by people who want to matter now. The band plays like tomorrow does not exist - like there is only today, what they want and everything that stands in the way. It is not trying to be pretty, but it is real and it makes no excuses for it. I cannot say I enjoy it now. The misogyny is a big turn off. But I also can't help looking at it with a sort of tenderness towards my younger self who was trying to find its way and its voice towards adulthood. This record was a stepping stone towards that, and it pointed me towards other music that did show me this sense of community I was longing for.
its definitely significant, but not the type of music i enjoy listening to YNN
Not my cup of tea. Has some hits
I enjoy the rock grit and the hype the band brings to the hits. I think the hits still stand as hits and are so obviously the standouts (even if they really do get overplayed). The rest of the songs fell very flat for me and some transitions were harsh which really brought down the album for me. The only one besides the hits that I could listen to was Nightrain. 2.5
OK decent Rock n Roll album. Never understood all the hype about GnR though. Find them overrate somehow.
80s metal is so dated sounding now. It’s a fun one but I wouldn’t listen to it voluntarily
Interesting, not sure I’m a big fan of this genre and not sure if I enjoyed this album enough to listen to in my own time but I kind of get the appeal
Has a few classic bangers and I liked it generally, but theses types of vocal performances are just not really for me.
If these guys weren’t such raging scumbags, I would’ve liked this album much more. Frankly, they had no right to make such a good album. Slash is disgustingly good. Mr. Brownstone is an astonishingly well constructed song. This album probably deserves five stars, but they’ve made my skin crawl for the last 35 years, so the best I can give is three.
3.5 Like most I would imagine, I was familiar with the big hits before listening here. I was disappointed that none of the remaining 10ish tracks excited me as much. Maybe it's because this isn't exactly my genre, but I don't think I will be adding anything else to my playlists.
Wow guns and roses
Didn’t realize so many of their hits are from one album. But overall not a huge GnR guy. So 3 stars for the 2-3 good songs.
I always want to like this more than I do. It's got some great hits on it, but I can never make it through the album.
Solid rock album. Not a huge fan of GnR personally, but certainly can see why people are. Highlights are the classics
Meh.
Están las míticas y con eso no se falla, aunque no me flipan mucho estos tíos. 3
Obviously lots of bangers - catchy melodies and riffs. I have never heard Mr. Brownstone before - that one was kinda weird. I don’t like My, Michelle. Never heard Rocket Queen before and I like that one a lot. The music is sick. Least fave: Anything Goes 3.5
“I drink and drive” is one of the lyrics on a song talking about how easy it is to have sex with women… I hate this era of music. It’s hard to listen to because it’s so dated. Paradise City is 7 minutes long. Why? Riffs go crazy at times though, and the San Andreas commercial changed my life. I want to give this 2 stars, maybe even 1 when I really analyze it… but I can’t deny the impact.
2.5
The album isn't inherently bad, but there's just a lot of the same stuff without much variety here. The hits are great and definitely carry the album, but it does nothing to further the glam/arena rock genre that at this point has become very dated and was even on its way out in the early 90s. Standout Tracks: Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child O' Mine
Not my thing.
Good hard rock. Stellar debut album. Just not a style of music that resonates with me. Paradise City is the highlight for me as well As Sweet Child of Mine (did Slash rip off Alvin Lee's solo from TYAs I'd love to change the World?). If we're looking for a deep cut that stands out I'm going My Michele. 3.5 stars
I remember liking this at the time. I want to say that, looking back, GnR are more than just their big hits, but honestly, if I only ever heard Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child Of Mine and of course November Rain that would probably be enough. They did pack a punch, but the cruder ones are lost on me these days. Extra star for awesome guitar-playing though and Axl weaving around.
Good old-fashioned rock. Memories of whole pub singalong karaoke
Meh, I had enough of this when I grew up with it. There’s talent and a few objectively decent songs here. Yet most hair band-like rock and/or metal has always been stale to my taste. Even as a long time guitar player and musician, I’ve never been much of a fan of the soulless 80’s to present guitar-gasms of the likes of Slash, Van Halen, Etc. The pitches are so often too shrill for too long and the tones are lifeless. Just never been my cup of tea I guess.
Some classic songs, meh on some of the others. Definitely representative of a period of time.
Never really been my vibe, but you can’t deny the tunes on this. It does leave you thinking what an earth is on the rest of their albums as pretty much all their good songs were on this one! Simpsons: Yea
1 of 1001!, début 2024-02-24
never been a real Gn'R fan to begin with, but this album was fine. the singles are good, the other stuff not so much. its okay.
The hits are some of the best rock songs ever. The rest of the album is fine. It all balances out
My first instinct was to cringe when this came up, but I gotta say this album for the most part holds up well. Straightforward rock songs with some good instrumentals and fun structures. I kinda split this in half, half great and half not into it. For a debut it’s sick as hell, but I get turned off by some of the lyrics and vocal deliveries (Axl is hit and miss with me all the time but this album leans more towards the good) and by the story/delivery of Rocket Queen (skeeves me out) but overall it’s still good! Top tracks: Welcome To The Jungle, It’s So Easy, Nightrain, Paradise City, Think About You, Sweet Child O’ Mine
I’m guessing Axel decided to use his voice that way after hearing AC/DC. I don’t get metal, so to me, it just sounds ridiculous. That said, many people love it and there are plenty of ear worms and hits on this album. It’s not lacking in creativity or musicianship. 3.0
Kind of awesome, but kind of dumb too. Some solid jams, but pretty down the line -- you're not going to get a curve ball from GnR. It has its place, but not something I'd revisit regularly. 3.6
A couple heaters, the rest was pretty mid
First time hearing this entire album. Paradise City and Sweet Child O Mine I can do without forever. Welcome to the Jungle and Mr Brownstone are the bangers. The production is huge on this album, probably my favorite part. I would probably never willingly put this on again but I'm glad I gave it a shot.
I didn’t mind the listen through, but I don’t imagine revisiting often.
Schon auch ganz geil irgendwie
I took a short break from this website and this was the first album I listened to after coming back. Although better than I was expecting, this is still a disappointing album. Not much to it, very similar sounding songs but I suppose there isn’t anything terrible about it.
its ok
Did not enjoy this as much as I thought I would. Some big hits, others not so much. Really just wanted to get through this. Would be 2 stars, I’ll give it 3 stars because of the massive hits.
The hits are huge. The album tracks are... well, album tracks
Not really my thing...the radio hits were fine...but you gotta respect the impact that record had.
Хард-рок - музыка для скуфов. А если я ловил себя на мысли, что это заебись, а сейчас все хуево, значит я уже начал процесс трансформации. Ставлю 3, но то ли ещë будет..
Three iconic songs, but the rest was blech
Never listened to this whole album. I liked the songs I knew.
Very solid, I enjoyed
Some very famous songs, some not so interesting ones.
Rock halt.
Really only giving this album 3 stars because of the singles from it and how much it reminds me of my younger days, due to how much play they got at parties and social venues. They sound like a different band between the first and second tracks. Axl’s voice isn’t that irritating to me as it seems for others based on reviews here; I actually dig the unique sound he brings. Slash shreds - especially on “My Michelle.” Also, how the hell are some of you spending so much time writing these long reviews? We have 1001 albums to do! More power to you. This genre always makes me think that this is the extent of the stereotypical Trump supporter’s knowledge of music. Anyways, make sure to vote, everyone. Love ya.
the hits are undeniable hits but the rest didn't float my boat as much as it did back in the 80s/90s
I hated Paradise City when it came out. Apparently, I still do. Album in general was okay.
it has some classics, some absolute bangers, but also some things i just didn’t care for and wouldn’t listen to again, weird how that works. but still, iconic songs on what i believe to be a fairly average album.
A strong debut album with multiple hits still played (and maybe over played) on oldies stations
I get why this album is so well-known, but aside from 2 songs that I love, the rest is just not for me. It feels repetitive, and most songs sound too similar in style to me to enjoy them. This is a shame, because the two songs that I listen to regularly are great, and I'm sure that I'd love the rest of the album if I was already familiarized with it, but as of now I don't enjoy it too much. Expected Lorenzo Rating: 5
I mean, this record has some good tracks, but it is just not my thing. "Sweet Child O' Mine" is about as good as a Guns n' Roses track can be for me, and I still don't really love that song. Guns n' Roses is like the easy listening of metal. Which is I guess what most hair metal is? Is this hair metal? I don't know, and frankly I don't care. It's only getting the rating it's getting from me because I can accept that it is culturally significant.
A few hits for the masses.
Paradise city! For the rest is just gnr
Surprisingly good. I am not a fan, know some songs (how could I not) and have to say that I did not regret listening to a full album.
Iconic songs but not my cup of tea
7/10 Good but also kinda annoying. Great guitar stuff. Highlights: Nightrain
Great songs but not that into these older rock songs. 3/5
I remember two great songs but the rest of the album isn't very good
I have little appetite for this music, even in small doses.
Meh. I was more of a, “Use your Illusion” type of boy anyways. I liked the songs I knew, but nothing other than that stood out to me.
HIGH SCHOOL ALL OVER AGAIN!
Guns N' Roses halt! Appetite For Destruction ist das Album mit Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City und Sweet Child O' Mine. Heute nicht mehr so reizvoll wie damals.
I was never a fan; give me classic rock over this any time!
Niš posebno
A veces lo conocido es lo bueno, este es el caso, tres canciones conocidas, las únicas tres que valen para algo, las demás parecen copias entre sí
Meh--not my favorite style. I enjoy the guitar/power chords, but not so much the lyrics or Axel Rose's singing. But I didn't get through the whole album.
Beetje generieke rock, niet echt mijn ding.
Songs I knew: Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child of Mine Songs I didn't know: It's So Easy, Nightrain, Out ta Get Me, Mr Brownstone, My Michelle, Think About You Guitar is great! Don't like the voice.
Ja also Paradise City kennt man ja aus dem Album und sonst auch vielen schon mal gehört. Spannend, sich mal komplett das Album anzuhören. Aber kommt jetzt nicht in meine daily rotation.
As far as this type of music goes, this wasn't bad.
this was really tough on me bc in middle school gnr was probably my favorite band
Cool mais un peu trop rock pour que j'écoute tous les jours
The best of Guns n' Roses (which is both a positive and negative comment). Lots of their best on this album, making it a decent listen. (Axl Rose is still a deeply unpleasant man, regardless.)
Ive already listen this uwu some tunes are cooler than others, but still a good album overall
Nostalgisk, men fryktelig ensformig. 3 legendariske låter og resten av albumet høres ut som en ufattelig lang sang. Hater det. Elsker det. Orker ikke mer av det.
actually not too bad.
The singles are good but that’s pretty much it.
This feels like the platonic ideal of an LA hard rock album. Which is another way of saying it’s not really for me. I really enjoy the hits, particularly Paradise City and the objectively amazing Sweet Child of Mine, but felt pretty much nothing for the rest.
The singles are great. There’s definitely a reason that this is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. The other songs are pretty unimpressive. I am probably biased because I don’t really like glam/heavy/hair metal. I get that people like it and I can kind of understand why, but it really doesn’t speak to me.
Allt låter lite lika. Vissa highlights
Une chance qu'il y a tout les bangers de Guns N' Roses, sinon ça serait vraiment un album creux
Sweet Child O’ Mine is a much better song than I remember. Overall, listening to this album was not a negative experience, but I found myself losing focus to it as it progressed. I also would zone back in during some moments of vulgarity that were not my favorite, which typically doesn’t bother me, but I would not say it was a bad album by any means. Definitely found myself nodding along to the songs. Metal rock album, as expected.
I'm not a big GnR fan, but even I admit this was a pretty impressive debut, I think it has most of their bests songs. So relistening this, I was happy to hear songs like Welcome to the Jungle and the other sings, but some of those deep cuts are not good at all. I always get thrown off by It's So Easy, because it sounds like Axel Rose isn't the primary vocalist, and often have to go check my music isn't on shuffle. Standouts: Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child O' Mine
I have to give this album a lot of credit, Slash, Axl Rose and the rest of the group sounds fantastic, the vocals are on point. The guitar tone is great. There is high production value. There is no doubt these guys can play. I really enjoyed the highs of this record, unfortunately there still felt like a lot of fluff. The lyrical content is a bit drab, and Slash solos that don't hit are just kinda noodle-y. Since it was blandly received, I wonder how it compared to the contemporaries of 1987. Still, not bad for a debut album. I don't have the relevant information in my noggin to compare the era Poison, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Hair Metal/Glam/Arena Rock to give it its proper rating. Review of Reviews: People appreciate the musicianship, but it's quintessential boomer rock. Best Track: Paradise City
boomer mode
A lot more cowbell on this than I remember. Pretty one dimensional album but the highs are so high, some of the greatest arena rock songs of all time on here
Burnout Paradise groomed me into liking this. The songs are a bit too long so I got tired of them eventually. Holy fuck, there's a 3 screens long review on the global page, do I read it? #𝟴𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 (𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐡)
So much energy in this album. Axl and Slash at their best. Definitely the best Guns N' Roses album
Loved this album as a kid. Its aged well
An iconic album - the hits are great when I'm in the right mood for them, but they are definitely overplayed. Most of the rest of the album is a chore to listen to. It's alright.
A classic album from when I started listening to more rock during middle school. Still good, but I think my tastes have matured? Axel Rose has pretty insane vocal range.
There are no better baseball walk-up songs than “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Paradise City”. I knew someone who was a huge G&R fan when they originally came out. Not for the music, but for their authenticity. They thought that all the hairbands in the 80s tried to look like they were heroin addicts, “but these guys really ARE heroin addicts!” And that was enough.
Like some of the songs, again not really my scene. 3/5
This album, aside from its singles, doesn't have much meat on the bone. This band gave us Slash and some great songs, from this album and others, but overall not as big of a musical moment as far as I'm concerned
Ok so this sucks. But if you forget how much it sucks it's a lot of fun.
Yeah, ok
Några riktiga klassiker men också flera halvbra låtar.
Mycket som är bra och svängigt, men även en hel del låtar som är sådär. Faktiskt de flesta. Blir ändå en stark 3:a
#1 otroligt bra (klassiker) #2 svagare #3 bra #4 bra #5 bra #6 mästerverk #7 svagare #8 bra #9 mästerverk #10 ok #11 ok #12 bra Svagare avslut.
Axl lite ojämn men överlag bra. Stabil rockplatta.
I can understand how this would be regarded as an iconic album. However, in my opinion, that is purely based on three excellent songs which served to be three of the bands biggest hits. Around those songs there was nothing that stood out to me at all upon first listen, I thought the other songs were pretty insignificant.
Heel erg cliché maar wel vibe
There's something crusty, dusty, and nostalgic about this music to me, which recalls memories of hearing these songs playing on low volume in the background from radio stations in old stores and rundown ski chalets. Favourite song: Welcome to the Jungle, Nightrain
lots of hits
There's at least 4 hits on this album, Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Mr. Brownstone, and Sweet Child O' Mine. That right there is pretty impressive. This album was huge, I remember it being played constantly at the time. It seemed to bring metal more mainstream at the time. Huge hit for a debut album, overall it's still pretty good
"Welcome to the Jungle" - what a way to start this project! "Paradise City" is one of my all-time favorite rock songs. "Sweet Child o' Mine" is a stone cold classic. Rest of the album is good but none of the songs particularly stands out. "Rocket Queen" sounds just like "Welcome to the Jungle."
Hoo boy, THE Guns N' Roses album. With hits like Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O' Mine this album delivers that classic GNR that everybody knows. It's also GNR at their peak which is kind of funny considering it's their debut album. I don't really know of any other mainstream band that peaked at their debut and released mediocre album after mediocre album but still somehow managed to stay relevant for years to come. Other than the 3 mentioned hits I don't really see myself coming back to listen to anything on this album so for that this gets a 3/5.
The sun isn’t greater than the parts. Good talent and styles mix together and the results feel mixed. Best when they create space for some varied landscape in the songs but at times it feels over produced and lacking emotion beyond the wavering wail of Axl a few great songs and many that are lesser reflections of the good ones. Proof… love Buzz by Nirvana came on after the last song and I thought it was from appetite and thought oh wait a second this sounds interesting….
Outside of the singles this album is a snoozer.
Ok, some classics
VARFÖR STÖNAR DE SÅ MYCKET
Favorite songs: Sweet Child O Mine Slash riffs so hard in this song. I don't really think other songs on the album come close. Paradise City maybe. Overall the album is pretty ok.
Cool rock songs
I really want to hate this more than I do. Sometimes you just have to acknowledge that a few standout tracks (you know the ones) and a great set of pipes on Axl is enough to sort of carry an album in an awful genre. Really hated the artificial vocal effects like on 'Rocket Queen' (yuck, by the way).
I honestly think that Guns N’ Roses never made a single truly great albums. They are a greatest hits band (mainly). But what a greatest hit album that is. The fact that this album includes “Welcome To the Jungle”, “Paradise City” and “Sweet Child O’Mine” is beyond insane. Honorable mention to “Think About You”. I’m just a sucker for that chorus. The rest of tracks range from plain boring to outright annoying. But Rose’s pipes and those few absolute masterpieces are just difficult to really hate.
The cover art is a popular t-shirt design, so of course the average rating is over 3.5. Guns N' Roses were like a movement. This album was like the culmination of hair metal. It was an album my brother always played super loud on cassette and made my parents mad. To me these songs are just memories. They have little to offer me after being so ingrained into my brain. Mr. Brownstone is probably the best one that hasn't been overplayed on radio, in movies and during sporting events.
it's alright, would have liked this better in my teens
a bit boring but I like sweet child o mine.
Pretty mid. Welcome to the jungle, sweet child o' mine and nightrain ate. The moans rocket queen ✨🙏
Some classic songs but I just can't enjoy his voice.
Not a big GnR fan
Good music but not my preference.
Something has always rubbed me the wrong way about Guns & Roses. Maybe because the lead, Axl Rose, was always in trouble at their height when I was a kid. However, I remember how popular the first track, Welcome to the Jungle, was. I’ll admit. It’s catchy. Hard rock just isn’t my thing. However, this music isn’t bad. Mr. Brownstone is decent. As are Paradise City and Sweet Child O’ Mine. Honestly, the entire album is good. I can see why Guns & Roses is one of the best hard rock bands ever. The musicality is definitely there. Not my favorite genre, but I get it.
Some of the greatest hits from a generation that played it to death
Found songs that I’ve never heard before. The one I like most is Thinking About You. It’s got punk elements and then there is acoustic k we the top which is kind of amazing… love it!
Axl is a good vocalist (yes I really think this), his register switching and performance is so great and memorable. The guitars solo and drums are incredible. Paradise City is the best song ever. But some songs here on b-side are so void of anything fun, the album gets wack. Anything Goes and Rocket Queen especially suck
Classics that make me want to put a gun to my head if I have to hear them again
En voor vandaag is dat genoeg Favorieten: Welcome to the Jungle, Think About You
It’s an ok classic rock album
The singles on here are good. V sonically coherent
This was the year my family arrived in the US. It took another few years before I was interested in music in general, and specifically in hard rock. I was more into GnR around the time they released the Illusions. Agreed with others that it’s more like 4-5 great songs among filler. They do have a very consistent sound throughout the album. And I don’t know if Mr Brownstone is considered one of the greats but I love that song.
Three or four songs that deserve 4 or 5 star rating. On an otherwise 2 star album.
A tough one. A landmark of 80s metal to be sure. The glam genre taken to its furthest extreme. It is full of excess both in hedonism, layered big arena music and grime and hate. It’s that hate - hate of women and other that drags it down. A double edged legacy.
Honestly, pretty meh on this album. I'm sure it made a big impact, but it's not a fun listen for me in 2023. Maybe I'd like it more if I hadn't heard the singles a million times. I dunno. 2.5/5
Never totally understood the hype for this album, it doesn’t sound that different from most other hair metal albums from the time, just with one of the most obnoxious singers ever. There are moments where I get the hype of this as the best of hard rock, like “My Michelle” and chunks of “Rocket Queen”, but I’d rather listen to the Aerosmith albums they ripped off. C+
The 3 main songs are still good - the rest are only okay.
lots of familiar sounds,sick guitar
too much bite. sweet child pnice tho
Another that's probably a good 75/100 but can't warrant giving it 4*.
I was surprised how many songs I knew on this album. BUT I Guns an’ Roses just isn’t for me.
Good first half, bad back half
Especially during the Use Your Illusion period I liked this band a lot more than I do today. I can still appreciate the musicianship and energy, but it is not really my thing and Axl Rose's voice can get quite annoying after a while.
i think im too young to fully connect with this. but Paradise City..... i also depise everyone who loves this band. you know who you are.
63/100
