Listened to this in high school

3.5 stars. Again pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed a Stooges album. Skipped through the rejected John Cale mix for comparison and have to say I have clear preference for the original release. (justice for the Glyn Johns mix of "Let It Be" though!!!)

Never fully listened to a Stooges album before. Love the drones mixed in with tight songwriting. Ahead of its time.

iggy pop, nuff said

From the center of the Venn diagram of garage and punk, a legendary figure will rise.

Better than I expected.

An album that kept surprising me. Eight tracks and thirty eight minutes indicates a level of brisk efficiency. And yet, mixed in with the short, sweet protopunk classics are these eight minute sort-of-psychedelic-rock tracks. It didn’t shock me to hear Iggy Pop was a Doors fan. Not the typical style of music I gravitate towards, but was pleasantly surprised!

1969 committed many crimes, because there is no other year that would convince a band like The Stooges to record We Will Fall. It is supposedly 10 minutes and 18 seconds long. It seemed like hours of my life passed before I pressed skip. That's right. I didn't even finish it. The Stooges save themselves with the next track being No Fun. It is a lot of fun, with Iggy doing his best Jagger, finishing with a couple of barks. Ron Asheton is a killer guitarist. He gives his best Hendrix on Real Cool Time.

It's all about the live show but this stood up surprisingly well to listening.

amazing how many songs from this album are still in the mainstream today. full of attitude, style, grunge, and cool.

Punk with a dark and brooding edge, with We Will Fall really setting this apart stylistically from other albums of this scene. The first side is much stronger than the second but it's still an enjoyable listen throughout

What a weird short album. These guys feel out of place like they should have been born 20 years later and been a heavy metal band. Enjoyable weird listen

I didn't know what to expect from this album and I was presently surprised. Couldn't say I was a huge fan of the 10 minute long dirge. It was interesting, but a huge shifting of gears.

Great! 4/5

I guess that proto-punk > punk. "Raw" is the word that fits this record the most and I enjoyed a lot of it.

Raw energy. Great one. One of the greatest.

Good vibes

Brilliant

I can see how this album set the stage for more modern punk music. While it has it's misses and hits, The Stooges self-titled album is an undeniable classic. My only issue with The Stooges is not their music. I feel like they were aiming for shock over substance in many of their live performances. Luckily, they avoid dumb "shock" factor in their music, unlike The Sex Pistols. Best Songs: We Will Fall, No Fun, Real Cool Time Worst Songs: Ann, Little Doll

This is an absolute _monster_ of an album . Must have been quite eyebrow raising back in 1969! The faster tracks are rockin'. The slower, dronier tracks are moody AF - kinda prefigure some of the things Sludge and certain flavors of Doom get up to. Fave track - "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is just unspeakably badass....

Awesome. 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog are classics. Still so fresh nowadays, which is a feat after 50 years! We Will Fall was an unexpected change of mood - this songs sounds like a bad trip, but it is so intriguing. It did completely break the mood in a jarring way, but that added to it. Unfortunately I do think the album turns quite unremarkable after that (the lyrics seem a bit half baked at times)... But I do think the first three songs are a LOT to live up to.

Not even The Stooges best album!

Molto bello ma ci sono poche persone, da approfondire. Incazzato sporco

Far ahead of its time. Best track is "I Wanna Be Your Dog". It still sounds sleazy, sexy and a bit dangerous in 2022 and I imagine it would've been mind-blowing in 1969. However, I didn't like all of the songs equally. For example, "We Will Fall is an indulgent 10-minute track that's like the Doors meets Velvet Underground. I prefer when the Stooges stick to garage rock and proto-punk.

loud, distorted, irreverent and brilliant. Is it 5 stars not quite. The 10 minute dirge We Will Fall keeps it from the highest level, not because its not good; it is quite good and interesting, but damn it is too long. I wanna Be Your Dog almost single-hadedly brings it to a 5 but ultimately can't quite do it. 4.5 stars.

Love me some Stooges. Very rough. Very raw.

I love Iggy and The Stooges. Raw Power is up there as one of my favourite records ever. This would be a 5* but for the super long We Will Fall. I Wanna Be Your Dog is one of the best songs every recorded

Really like the vibe of the album... From some weird vocals to good guitar solo's also the length of the album, with one song lasting 10 minutes!! It was a brilliant experience... Small 4/5

3.5. An interesting album with some surprisingly unique sounding tracks. Standouts: 1969, No Fun, Real Cool Time, Not Right, Little Doll.

good stuff. nothing mindblowing but good stuff from a good genre and era solid 3.5

Great listen, even if it is obvious they didn’t have enough material to fill an album

Massa massa rockzinho anos 60

Groovy guitar riffs. Some really impactful songs. Some just ok songs.

Very strange album. Not perfect, but worth the wild ride at least once.

Strong debut for the godfathers of punk but there are some duds here and there. We Will Fall is 7 minutes too long and besides No Fun, side B is a bit lacking.

Big fan of Iggy and his Stooges, and I appreciate the significance of this album. Listen to the birthing pains of a new genre. But it does feel like a bit of a fossil, and does not hum along the way Funhouse does. Ah well, they can't all be perfect.

Primordial punk at its infantile finest. Without this album and this band the shift from skiffle infused Beatles rock, and psychedelia doesn’t happen.

Good enough

I liked this! Also, I had no idea they started in the greatest city of all time (but I might be biased since I live in that city). I did find the songs a bit repetitive but imagining how this would have sounded when it was released was satisfying.

Classic seminal Detroit punk. This album takes you into a gritty, disaffected world and keeps you there. My only gripe is the 10min+ "We Will Fall" that kind of derails the listen, but "No Fun", "Loose", "I Wanna Be Your Dog" are all-time classics.

Très psychédélique sans vraiment trop l’être non plus. Les voix font beaucoup penser à Lou Reed.

Classic 60s rock

Pure punk rock! I wanna be your dog is a all time classic.

A great introduction into driving bass lines of early rock

a bit of an unhinged album, but I like it. Fav song We Will Fall, Ann, Little Doll

Just when I say I'm jaded with rock albums, we get a punk rock classic. I've been wanting to sink my teeth into a Stooge album for a while. You've got Larry, Curly, Moe, and Iggy Pop. This album is really great, so many heavy tracks with a persistent energy. I honestly don't think I knew any of these tracks going in, but from "I Wanna Be Your Dog" I knew I was in for a ride. I love the blend of punk (before punk was even a thing) with some psychedelic solos and riffs, very cool combo. So much on here that I'll keep coming back to. Really, truly impressive that this is pre-'70s. Better punk than basically all of what we've heard through the '80s and '90s. It's a 4.5 star today, but I don't doubt that this one could climb to a five after more listens. Consider me a StoogeHead in more ways than one. Favorite tracks: I Wanna Be Your Dog, Not Right, We Will Fall, Real Cool Time, Little Doll. Album art: Definitely iconic, I've seen this one plenty. Maybe a bit unassuming as a band photo but something about the way these guys are tiered is enticing. And the warm color palette works well too. The kind of album you'd pick up in 1969 thinking it was some new Beatle BS and it's these guys coming to search and destroy. 4.5/5

My Ann Arbor area homeboy! How could you not love The Stooges? Something that just occurred to me - The Stooges are the missing link between The Doors and punk rock. I've always felt there was something slightly punk about The Doors, maybe just that they were rebels. I know Iggy was inspired by Jim Morrison, and you can hear it in their first album, but it also has more of a punk ascetic. Anyway, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 4 stars.

Mega clang

When you listen to the album now, you can pretty much hear the birth of punk over the course of the album. I wonder what it would have sounded like at the time, must have sounded completely new, subversive- dangerous even.

Extra points for radically exceeding my expectations for a 1969 album with such a dopey name.

Its iconic. Pretty much every track has been replicated by a 90s band somewhere

Un peu dans la veine des Rolling Stones, un peu des Doors et plus de distorsions. Pour l’époque, un album important qui a ouvert une nouvelle voie. I Wanna Be Your Dog est une pièce incontournable.

Proto-punk, great stuff. Hi energy (mostly) and competently played. Original version of No Fun interesting to hear, I only knew the Sex Pistols' version.

The first song made me worried my headphones were broken, very werid left/right balancing. But after that was smooth sailing. The beats do get same'y, but they keep up a kind of energy I appreciate, and We Will Fall and Ann provide sufficient breathers for the whole to stand strong. Little disappointing on the vocal front, would have prefered them to be clearer and easier to make out - it definitly felt like they were drowned out on some tracks. Still a fun, entertaining ride. Highlight: We Will Fall

Enjoyed most of it. I think I listened to the remastered version so there were some extra bits that were a bit lost on me as I'm not a mega fan or anything (yet). There was one song that I swear the artic monkeys sound just like them.

This isn't my bag, but it is great. I think it's one of those albums that is more important than good. Important to the development of punk music and its legacy. Also, not mentioned enough is that John Cale (the Velvet underground) produced this album. I met Iggy Pop once and he was really nice.

Awesome album, never really listened to The Stooges before, but looking forward to exploring their music more. I Wanna Be Your Dog the standout track for me.

Crazy that this music was made in 1969, just amazing for the time. I can't say the album is consistent as fun house but it doesn't have to be. I wanna be your dog.. just wow.

Love some Iggy

We Will Fall is kind of droney meh. Most other tracks are great. Some of my favorites.

Rolling Stones vibes, loved the rawness of the mixing

OG Punk. Who else can go into a hotel room for two days and output a classic album with I just wanna be your dog and 1969 other than Iggy and the Stooges? 4/5.

1969 I wanna be your dog No fun Un album super influent sans doute et très très bon ( surtout IWBYD et NF)

Heerlijk, die Iggy toch!!

Interesting proto-punk. But again, you don't really need 2 Stooges albums on the list and it gave me Fun House 2 weeks ago which I much preferred.

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: I wanna be your dog

Great, but not as great as some of their later albums.

Proto Modern Lovers proto punk

A loud, distorted, chaotic slice of R&R history. There are some classic songs here; 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun and Real Cool Time (which I first as a Feelies cover). Not sure what to make of the 11 minute freak out that is We Will Fall but this album is a vital piece if R & R history and should probably heard by any music lover. 4.5 🌟

The worst of their big 3 albums and yet it's still absurdly good. 9/10 1. I Wanna Be Your Dog 2. 1969 3. We Will Fall

I can get why some people might not like this album but man have I always loved the energy in it

I liked "Fun House" better, but I enjoyed this album too. I like their sound, I like their style. Did not love "We Will Fall" though - too long, too jarring compared to the rest of the album. "No Fun" and "1969" were the best tracks.

Way ahead of their time, this album would fit right into the 90s scene. Wasn't a big fan of "We Will Fall" as it was a long dirge, but the other tunes are full of energy and swagger. Great album, added quite a few to the playlist.

Grew up with this album, know it well

Iggy iggy iggy

An excellent debut album from the Stooges, who burn out of the gate with two rocking classics in 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog! The momentum and energy slows right down with We Will Fall, which times out for a third of the album, but fortunately the rest of the record redeems itself. Otherwise, this would be 5 stars, plus the next two albums are even better!

Very good! 69

A somewhat fragmented album, it's pulled together by the unified raw attitude of the band

1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog are fantastic. The ten minute song was a little bit of a failure to launch for me... and the remaining tracks have a great vibe but don't stand out. I'll give this a 4 but really I think it's a 3.5.

Alongside Velvet Underground & Nico, these two albums inspired an entire generation of randoms like you and me to pick up a guitar and belt off a song. Instead of going with the norm of highly produced albums of the time, this album went with a more lofi loud and experimental approach, and did so quite successfully with solid tracks mostly all throughout. The first two are classics. Perfect songs that deserve their notoriety based on their inspiration on the youth generation and their heavy punk and metal sound despite being in the 60s. Then we get into a psychedelic track that goes on for the entire rest of the first side which honestly flies by but I can see how this can seem boring to primitive people. Then we get into another "fun" proto-punk classic. After that, the songs slow down in terms of power and innovation but are still just as raw. "Real Cool Time" and "Ann" were probably the only songs I did not care for as much, but the album works from start to finish. An album I can't get tired of no matter how many listens.

its worth its votes just for the 3 all time banger tunes. it's also very good how their shit tracks are so aggressively shit that you admire them instead of hate them. most bands filler tracks just fluff around and don't do anything. the stooges don't do that type of disappearing into the background.

I remember queuing outside my local record store in the pissing rain on the day this was released. Me and my mate Ortisse pooled our pocket money together and bought this album. We skipped all the way home, hand in hand and couldn't wait to play the damn thing. Full of fizzy cola, we couldn't hold back our grins as we danced around the room, playing air guitar. Ortisse later hanged himself in the bathroom.

Before Iggy was a big wrinkly bag of skin. Hurtles towards you like a firework in a skip.

The Stooges are often cited as a major influence on punk, and I get why. The songs are deceptively basic and simple, but the main reason is probably Iggy's attitude, which is the platonic ideal of a sullen, vaguely hostile, bored teenager. The lyrics match: "Well, it's 1969, okay All across the USA It's another year for me and you Another year with nothing to do" Thankfully, there is more to The Stooges than that. For one thing, the rhythms, while primal, are tight. The other thing that differentiates The Stooges is the wall of noise emanating from Ron Ashton's guitars. Yes, there was fuzz, distortion and wah wah before this, but Ashton puts it to an entirely new use. He smears layers of fuzz, distortion, and wah wah over the songs the way a brutalist painter would smear colors with a palette knife, creating a thick texture that Iggy floats over. Iggy even wrote about Ashton in the song Dum Dum Boys: "Now I'm looking for The dumb dumb boys Where are you now When I need your noise" A lot of people say that this album is uneven, which would be a major problem with an album that's only 35 minutes long, but I've got to be honest--I love every minute of it, even the obvious space filler, We Will Fall. Why? I guess I would say because everything in the album, the aggressiveness, the brutalism, Iggy's sullen vocals, the lyrics, the primal rhythms, and Ron Ashton's masterful color work all combine synergistically to put across the theme of teenage alienation as perfectly as you could possibly want. And besides, it's a blast to listen to.

I did not like Iggy that much but this one is pretty solid!

Made me miss seeing concerts in tiny bars.

An all around enjoyable listen.

Liked this. A lot f my favorite bans clearly influenced by these.

this started as regular garage rock and then got more weird and experimental. it was very unpretentious and kinda dumb but i liked it, and the distorted guitars sounded cool. 7/10

As paleolithic and raw as rock and roll gets. So much to enjoy here, but the fact the final track sounds more like a Tibetan funerary drone than pop music is the icing on the cake.

Gotta love an album that washes over you and makes you feel dirtier than you were when you started. Still think “I Wanna Be Your Dog” is the standout, but good God the whole thing would’ve spooked the hell out of me had I been alive in 1969.

Good album…sounded like cage the elephant.

enjoyable

I enjoyed this a lot more than I did on my first listen. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is still one of the best songs ever. I appreciate the discordance and the attitude of this album a whole lot more now. I especially like "Ann" a lot.

Go get'em Iggy.

Nice one

i wanna be your dog is from 1969?!

pretty groovy! can see myself vibing too in the future. enjoyed "we will fall" particularly with its matt elliot-esque screeching viola, and general velvet-ness

It's nice, kinda fresh

love the stooges every.damn.time.

Enjoyable romp from young Iggy and gang.

when you look at what this album kicked it off it's pretty incredibly, very early to the punk scene and influenced countless bands and sounds and scenes, some tracks im not so into or sound like rehashes of others, but it's good

iconic

Great album. Doors influences.

Iggy pop , proto punk , heavy guitar

Great precursor to the music defining punk rock

Great, its like I found the missing link between rock and punk.

Raw, weird combination of black sabbath and punk

This album has stood the test of time.

3 classics, 3 really good tracks but dragged down by we will fall.

Good album. Driving guitars and that distinctive lead vocal. I wanna be your dog by far the best rack but others have their merits too and I enjoyed the album.

Wanna be your dog is a 5* song

Love this but it's been a while

Cierto toque y pose punk. Trascendentales e imperecederos

Good. Grungy. Would listen again.

I LOVED this album. It makes me want to get stoned and dance around.

Great raw sound

Wow. I can't believe how punky this was. Way ahead of it's time.

Was there such thing as punk music in the 60s???

A few songs I knew but never made the connection as to the artist. Good old school stuff and I can hear the beginning of sound that was taken forward by other artists.

Achei massa, cheio dos fuzz podrão, não sei se escutaria de novo

Pretty good. Can hear the sounds that would influence the late-era rockers in late 70s-early 80s.

Pretty solid, not a lot to say about it.

Schweet

Familiarity: 1/10 Notes: The Stooges' self titled is a classic proto punk driven rock record. Boasting long guitar riffs and solid jams Real Review: 7.5/10

No Fun is my highlight

good good .. We Will Fall is an insane blueprint for things like GY!BE and Liars

Great album. Love "I wanna be your dog".

I really enjoyed this album. I'm not even sure if I have ever heard of the stooges before.

Quite liked it. Better than expected.

Great early punk

1. his voice alternates between being kind of annoying and kind of charming constantly 2. We Will Fall is really good and holy shit its from 1969?? but also why is it after the first two songs. 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog (relateable am i rite) are both bangers and the momentum gets stopped in its tracks for 10 minutes. 3. also it doesnt help that the middle section doesnt have quite the same spark imo. picks up at the end though 4. the guitar sounds on here are really sick. the right channel wah guitar in 1969 goes fucking bonkers badonkers what the hell 5. thats it :)

Good stuff. Definitely different, and that is why I like it. If I saw this at my record store I would pick it up.

I prefer Kill City but still pretty good.

Fine to listen to, can understand why this album / band is important. Might not go back and listen to it but I can admire their talent in a general time when grougher rock & roll hadn’t yet arrived.

Enjoyable (I said this in the orange juice review and rated Orange juice as a 3. But that was meant for this. Have not listened to orange juice yet. ). Oh well

Ok. 3 stars. A lot of medium albums on this list.

Felt jarring to have a 10 minute slow chanting song as the third song, then go back to rock music, but ok.

Love this album cus it’s just the mf boys hanging out

Interesting listen. Obviously one of the forefathers of Punk and Hard Rock, but I also hear some psychedelia which is a nice touch. 3/5- will listen again

Did not impress me, but I will give it its props for influencing a lot of music to come.

Highlights: 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun. 3.0

We Will Fall is amazing

It's not bad. Some of the songs get into a groove but then they don't evolve (the end of these tracks sound very much like the beginning).

i thought the album was pretty decent, not much else to say

I’ve been familiar with Raw Power for years, but never listened to this. Only familiar with I Wanna Be Your Dog. We Will Fall took the wind out of the sails, but overall I enjoyed it. Raw Power is better though.

Never really been a fan of the Stooges like that, but this one does have their best songs in "1969", "No Fun" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog", at least. When I was in high school and cared a lot about garage rock, this was always talked about as their garage rock album, and I don't think that feels quite true? It's a bit like calling the Velvet Underground garage rock, really, they seem to have artsier ambitions than your average garage band (especially considering they brought in John Cale to produce!) Just, it's not very good outside of the big name songs, with "We Will Fall" in particular seeming like a bad parody of the Doors.

Good clean fun!

Liked this better than Fun House, but not enough to put it up to a 4. Again (and weirdly, for a 1969 album) a quite nice surround sound mix on Apple Music. One more to go by this band, which means they have more albums on the list than Steely Dan or XTC. #sigh

The janglin’ on I Wanna Be Your Dog is truly something. Fav tracks: I Wanna Be Your Dog Saved a song: Y RYM: N

I Wanna Be Your Dog is a banger, the rest sounds boring and forgettable to me.

19$ fortnite card. who wants it? and yes, i'm giving it away. remember: share, share, share! and trolls: don't get blocked! Why you putting it here😭

I DO wanna be her dog..

Rock aus den 60ern - da hat sich zum Glück viel getan seitdem ;-) Ein paar wilde Nummern sind dabei, wer auf Gitarren steht wird hier fündig. 3/5

Day896 - they’re loud they’re angry and they must have been a shock to the system

This album sounds like the result of the Rolling Stones and the Doors having a baby. We Will Fall prevents this from being a better album overall but I enjoyed this listen.

Try as I might, I just can't connect with The Stooges. I feel like should like them more, but ...

I liked the riffs and a couple of the songs. Needed more melody.

3/5 - Hit or miss, honestly. For a short album, the % of aimless drone is too much. Gets an extra point for influence, but this isn't one I'm going to come back to.

I Wanna Be Your Dog is a classic, and We Will Fall the best track. 7/10

I enjoyed most of the music but I found the lyrics so repetitive and “We Will Fall” just felt endless to me. There’s an AJJ song I like called “I Wanna Be Your Dog 2” so it was fun to listen to “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” Not something I’ll be listening to again in full, fine to listen to a couple of times for this project but just didn’t interest me enough to come back to. Fav song: I Wanna Be Your Dog Least fav: We Will Fall

Genuinely one good song in this and that’s it. Also I know it sounds cool now because it captured the era and stuff but just a song saying the name of the year you are in is soo lazy oh my goodness. Specific rating - 3.5 Fav song - I wanna be your dog Least fav- we will fall

I don't think I realized the commonality between The Doors and The Stooges before hearing this album. This is way more rock and roll, but the psych rock feel runs deeply through it. I'm liking this a lot more than some previous Iggy Pop albums. I'm strugging to place a rating. Since I can't see myself ever intentionally looking to put this on again, I think it lands at 2. But I feel bad with that low of a rating... It feels more important than that. Ending on Little Doll was a high note, enough to push it that notch up to 3.

Let’s get funky with it. Let’s get weird with it. Let’s copy the Animals and Rolling Stones! Before iggy pop struck it solo, he wanted to be your dog, and that dog was a two album effort with the Stooges. They’re in that mix with the Animals and Kinks, pushing distorted guitar sounds and making some edgy tunes for the day. We Will Fall is a weird evil chant sounding thing that was all certainly meant to just piss off parents with some sell your soul stuff, then it gets back to fuzzed out 60s rock. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ decent but a slog in the middle when 8.5 minutes of your 30 minute album are a waste of time.

Some good songs on here. Was an enjoyable listen. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again

Started out okay, liked the experimental parts. How many remixes do you need? Just make a decision.

Some grimy guitars and raspy talk-singing. It's fine. The 10 mins of We Will Fall felt more like 20.

Entre les Doors et les Rolling Stones mais pas hyper hyper convaincue

Difficult to believe this was made before the 70s. Saying that, some of it hasn't dated brilliantly. Decent album though.

Solid. Loved 1969.

Fine 60's garage rock, complete with handclaps and that signature fuzzy guitar sound. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is iconic in that regard. "We Will Fall" was an odd inclusion, though.

Forgettable background music for me... Sorry what is this review about?

If the Rolling Stones were from Detroit and you set a couple mics up in a garage. The extended jams like “We Will Fall” don’t want work as well as “…Dog” or “1969”. Weirder than I thought it would be. The John Cale influence is evident, “Ann” could be a VU song. Absolute through-line to The Ramones. Cool and weird.

Really good

Much better than I was expecting although the 10 minute chanting song was about 9 minutes too long!

Moments of greatness, but a bit inconsistent/incohesive.

It's aggressively OK.

Their debut album. Alt Rock / Punk. The influence of this album cannot be over stated. It must have been mind blowing in 1969. Mostly short and sharp tracks with what feels like a ten minute interlude. Solid album.

Decent decent, hey what was “We Will Fall” doing here?

From very good to very tiring

pretty good, not much to comment on

Guitars constantly playing out of key, lyrics grunted with little respect for melody, generally terrible production, but overall I didn’t hate it. There is some strange magnetism to the rawness, but not as much as some people make it out to be.

This is a pretty good album. It highlights the great rock music these guys came up with very well. It’s a bit uneven though and lacks some bite but that can be attributed to a great live band being stifled by the studio environment. The trippy tunes are great to hear on an album by a rock band but I suppose this was a great era for experimentation by rock bands. I’m not much into putting live albums on this list but maybe this is a band that deserves one.

Decent psych-rock grungey album. 3/5

This is a pretty good album, and I’m sure it sounded incredible when it came out. You can hear the influence it had on punk and garage rock almost immediately. Still, I’m not convinced it’s aged quite as well as its reputation suggests.

Amazing Iggy is still alive. I always liked this album. Obviously track three is weird and a nod to the Velvet Underground. This is one of the founding albums for punk rock. 6.25/10 Top song No fun

Finger

I love the proto punk/70s NYC CBGB era period so this is squarely in my wheelhouse. That being said, I had never heard this album before. I liked a solid 70% but don’t think I’ll listen to it again unprompted. We Will Fall’s chanting got to me, had to skip to the next song.

I have mixed feelings about the Stooges. I really like some of their stuff while some of it leaves me flat. Not sure if I have ever listened to any of their albums straight through. This one is fine. I was surprised by how much it sounds like the Doors minus gratuitous use of synthesizer.

This project is kind of an exercise in reminding me of all the bands I never got around to actually listening to. I feel like I'm one of Jack Black's students in School of Rock, who knows his chalkboard diagram of rock history really well, but hasn't listened to very many of the bands listed therein. I'm realizing that in my mind the Stooges and New York Dolls are totally conflated. I fundamentally remain a fifth grade student linking explorers' names to countries I know nothing about ... Cortez ... Pisarro ... Aztecs .... Incas ... Stooges, New York Dolls, Iggy Pop, David Johanson ... it's all just names and canned history. Expecting this to be a long 34 minutes, I'm pleasantly surprised. The first two songs I really like. For many years, I've been thinking that the early Modern Lovers were trying to sound like the Velvet Underground. Turns out, they sound like the Stooges. Maybe. John Cale produced both this album and the first Modern Lovers sessions ... maybe that's a factor here. Then we get to We Will Fall, and the resemblance of this album's cover image to the cover photo on the Doors' debut album seems suddenly relevant. This seems like the Stooges' answer to The End. In addition to everything else he can do, evidently Iggy Pop has the power to slow down time. Interminable. After that, it's five more songs that combine in various proportions the drone rock and psychedelia already staked out in the first three songs. It's ok. Glad I'm filling yet another gap. Not likely to listen to the whole album ever again, but those first two songs are really. good.

The theme for me the past week or so was initial delight often followed by grave disappointment, or (maybe worse?) total apathy and inability to recall what I just listened to. The first song was a real surprise and woke me right up. Moving along I was content, but then the third song being 10+ minutes long, taking up one-third of the entire record, and I was kind of checking out. Eventually I fell asleep (I was listening to this on a plane) and when I woke up a bit later a song was playing that I really liked, but I then realized it was not by the Stooges, as my streaming service had moved briskly onto the Kinks. Anyway, I did relisten to this while awake again, and it was pretty enjoyable, but that 10 minute song really blows.

I can see how this may of influenced a lot of bands but for me it was only ok. Stand outs were 1969 and Dog, however We Will Fall just went on and on too long.

More rockin than I expected. Has some cool tracks.

We Will Fall almost drops this a star. But the rest is decent enough to stay at a 3.

I think they left the audio recording on for like 10 minutes in their back pocket and just made it a song

this one was far better. good shit.

The Stooges can jam, decent album

It's wild that We Will Fall takes up about a third of the album's runtime. It's weird, experimental for the time, and overall pretty enjoyable.

Rating: 7/10 A promising debut for a band that would make a great trilogy, which set the stage for noisy garage rock and punk. It's also a tale of two halves for me. The first four tracks are awesome, and I do enjoy the long droning We Will Fall. As great as I Wanna Be Your Dog is, my favorite might be No Fun, which is actually fun as hell. But the last four tracks, totaling 11 minutes, aren't quite as good to me, especially Not Right which goes into wanky guitar solo playing that's not great. Maybe the strongest of 3's at the moment

Pretty heavy for the late 60s. Cool but not cool enough to add to my playlist

I much prefer the later "Lust For Life" type Iggy Pop, but it was good.

Not my favourite Stooges record.

We Will Fall had to be shorter, man. No need for it to be almost a third of the album. 3/5

Pro good start for Iggy Pop with this one. It's was pretty enjoyable.

pretty neat, you can definitely tell that punk as a genre owes a lot to this one. i liked "We Will Fall" most tho, very atmospheric and spooky. side b isn't as memorable imho.

I would have maybe put the 10 minute drone lullaby as the closer instead of bringing the momentum to a schreeching halt a mere three tracks in. But thats punk for you I guess.

I know it is a good álbum, but it didn't quite grab me

A lot weirder and mellower in parts than I was expecting; including a brooding 10 minute druggy drone in the first half was a hell of a choice. It feels like the weight of the 60s ending was a struggle for the Stooges, but the hallmarks of horny rock and roll end up prevailing in the end.

These young men are going absolutely nowhere in life huh?

A somewhat interesting project, thought felt a bit dull in the end. I can see the moments from this that may have come to be influential, some of the vocals on earlier tracks are really fun, but the back half is nothing special and the project comes together as something not all that standout. I love a good long track, many of the best are, but We Will Fall is one of the most plodding snoozers I’ve ever heard. 1 listen Favorite Tracks: I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun

Een jonge Iggy Pop, wel nice

If you were a rock band in the 60s, by law you had to have an album cover with just the heads of the members of the band staring blankly into the distance. The stooges continue to impress, I still think Funhouse is the peak for me but strong debut.

There are some great songs - 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, and the several that feel like fillers. I like The Stooges well enough, but not sure why three albums are represented in this list. Their sound didn't change much between the three.

Eh. Not bad, but doesn't seem like anything special. Maybe it was more important in the context of its time, but that would need a lateral and chronological analysis rather than the random sampling here. Which leads me to my next question: do we really need *more* Stooges on this list?

I feel like if I was around when this came out, it would have been a favorite. This didn’t age that well. A few bangers, but I just can’t get into it all. We Will Fall should hit for me, because it is long and weird, but I am just bored. Rounding up from a 2.5

Well... its an experience... first 2 songs carry the album

Ok not memorable

I think it’s really fun to imagine what it would be like to hear this in 1969. You’re listening to the Beatles, etc., then this comes on. Your parents think you’re crazy. Kids these days!

Punk before punk. Got to give them kudos for coming up with a new approach that, a few years later, would become mainstream. Production is amazing (John Cale no less). I don't like this music, but I understand its appeal. 3 stars for innovation and production.

This is a loud and full on Punk Rock album. It feels fresh over 55 years after it was released. No massive hits from this album, but the song that I knew the most from it was "I Wanna Be Your Dog". And that was from an advertising campaign. But I suppose that speaks volumes about just how relevant and fresh this album still sounds. All of the instruments sound raw and as though they have never been played at anything less than top volume. It is almost impossible to me that this album was released only three years after "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears" by the Mamas and Papas. They sound like they are from different planets and I have to admit I would prefer to be on the planet that this album comes from. That being said I could probably do without listening to "We Will Fall" again. I don't understand why you would choose to give 30% of this album to a bit of an odd chant. But I suppose that is what you do when you are figuring out your voice. (3.125)

What a 1-2 punch, yesterday Mudhoney and today this. I referred to them as a more tuneful Stooges and this album reinforces that, even though its their most tuneful album. The first 2 tracks are very good, but it descends into a dirge quite quickly.

I think music should evoke emotion from the soul, and if this album set out to be weird and eccentric, it definitely achieves that. I understand it’s meant to blend psychedelic rock and punk, but the mix of styles makes it feel a bit disjointed, and it doesn’t really flow as a cohesive story. I would’ve enjoyed smoother transitions between songs. That said, I can appreciate how influential this album may have been. Some tracks felt a bit anticlimactic though—“We Will Fall” had a lot of potential and originality, but didn’t quite deliver in the end.

Like it 3/5

Copia e incolla di quello che ho detto per funhouse

Very druggy idk! It is good but i felt like all the songs blended into each other. I don’t know if I’d listen again I’m sorry!!

Somewhat better than expected! I've always heard of the Stooges and people mark them as astoundingly influential, but I was always a bit doubtful because Iggy can't sing! That has changed. He's really not a great singer, but people say he is astounding live. SO, that's cool. Never had the chance, but he might have changed my mind. First thing about this album is that the production is really great for the time! It's solid, the guitars are raunchy. The energy is really well captured. The musicians seem good. As mentioned, the guitars are nice and crunchy. Some good riffs in there. Drums and bass seem solid. Nothing surprising, but good. What kind of a crazy choice is having "We Will Fall" be so early in the lineup? It really doesn't even fit this album, but it definitely should have been last. Drone-y, chant-y, psych seems a bit out of place for these proto-punks. I don't think I'll come back to this album ever, but I am glad I finally got hear it. Definitely better than I'd hoped. For the sheer influence it had, let's go with that 3.

With apologies to the fans out there (and I know there are many), I can see why this is lauded as influential and it was probably groundbreaking at the time, but it wouldn’t be an album I would return to that often.

I’m so/so on this

Interesting to hear Iggy pops earlier stuff. Nodding off during the album but I don't think that's related to the quality or anything.

Above average student.

Cool guitar. Some of the tracks are a little long for my taste.

I love "I Wanna Be Your Dog" so much it carried a lot of momentum for this album, even when it really slowed down on the back half. 3.5

Less fun than the Iggy Pop albums I've gotten through the project. Saved from two-stardom by "I Wanna Be Your Dog"

On Sri ram dai

I liked this debut album fine from The Stooges! I feel like the only song I really liked was “I Wanna Be Your Dog” the rest of it kinda just sounded like stoner/psychedelic rock that carried on for far too long on some songs which was typical for the era. Overall, I liked this album but it wasn’t as strong of a debut as other artists on this website.

That was pretty cool, some really nice psychedelic guitar work. 3.5

Oh hey I Wanna Be Your Dog. Always thought this was a Rolling Stones song lol. I always forget how old Iggy Pop is. We Will Fall is a really big swing in music style from the previous song.

I'm a bit hit or miss with the Iggy/Stooges material. Sometimes I'm in the mood and its a 4; other times it feels grating and a 2. This one didn't evoke much emotion or standout. 3/5

Pretty good album. I can see how the punk genre really got it start from this.

You can hear a bit of the early punk, but it doesn't really get going until their album Raw Power

Dad rock at its finest

Review - Good at it's rockiest but We Will Fall is a real drag on the album. Rating: 5.5/10 Need to listen? YES

I can see why it’s influential Distinctive sound and I like the guitar work Kind of wears thin by the end We Will Fall is too long and sounds out of place

Great guitar work. The sound borders on psychedelia a bit too much for my liking, but the performances are raw which I like. ✨

we will fall was way too long and made me feel like i was in church. only started developing after 8.5 mins and even then not by much. other songs were alright, i really liked 1969 and elements like the guitar and style of song but pretty average overall

This is actually a pretty fun album. Except for that third song, “We Will Fall” — it was boring and way too long. The violin at the end was beautiful, but that song will forever be a skip for me. Reading some of the other reviews, I’m sure this was revolutionary and pushed all sorts of boundaries. But it just didn’t keep my attention all that well. Enjoyable but won’t be on repeat for me. 6/10 Pretty Good

I enjoyed the raw emotion of the sound, but as usual with Iggy Pop, I guess I'm not cool enough to say I "get it".

A bit unhinged and definitely rough around the edges, the debut has that proto-punk attitude but never hits the same thrilling intensity or wild momentum that 𝘍𝘶𝘯 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 would later deliver. Interesting in its ragged beginnings, but not as compelling as what they’d soon become.

proto punk? pretty interesting. ahead of their time.

I Wanna Be Your Dog - елітний бенгер. Ця ідея із дзвіночками та клавішами досі розвалює. До самого альбому я ставлюсь досить спокійно. Десь на 3.5.

It's alright.

The Stooges are the Egyptians of music. They did something cool and then unlearned how to do it Good album with some interesting songs

Junkyard dog. Some bangers but a lot of raff. These boys were on the sauce hard.

I’ll give it a three but it’s probably more like 2.5.

I like Iggy Pop's voice on this album. None of the songs blew me away, but there are some cool and psychedelic elements. I think 1969 was my most-enjoyed song. I can also appreciate We Will Fall with its drone-like sound and chanting. It's unique and definitely stands out on the album.

Wow, didn't know the 3 stooges were this good at makin tunes! Comedians, and musicians. Not something you see everyday! 3 stars for all 3 stooges.

⭐⭐⭐ Rått, opolerat och smutsigt. Intressant om man ser på det musikhistoriskt. Måste varit något extra att höra detta 1969. Som bäst är det coolt med låtar som 1969, I wanna be your dog, Little doll.

I love The Stooges, but of their three albums, this is definitely the weakest. A lot of filler, a lot of Iggy Pop doing Jim Morrison impressions, and a 10 minute track that outstays its welcome real quick. I think the album is a really cool instance of early punk being far easier to listen to than the Velvet Underground, but to be honest there's about 4 really great songs on this at most. This really isn't a no-skip album like Fun House or Raw Power.

Apparently any 60's rock and roll with psychadelic parts is considered ahead of its time, even though I've heard close to a dozen albums like this now. The songs are mostly fine but the recording quality is pretty bad

Niet zo heel bijzonder. Wel aardig

Whatever coked up stooge came up with "We Will Fall" should be castrated and never allowed to birth creative ideas again. Decent album otherwise.

Vibey but not for me

Groundbreaking at the time of its release. Not my style.

This should be an easy 4, but a third of the album is a 10 minute song... lots of good, but plenty of filler for such a short album.

It sounds like it shoild be cool, but soemething just doesn't cpnnect for me

A couple of decent tracks. You can understand the influence but a bit too inconsistent to make it more than average album.

On their debut record The Stooges have tremendous rock 'n' roll energy, attitude and scorching, distorted guitars. They also have a truly original lead singer in Iggy Pop. The only thing they're missing is actual *songs*. These two- and three-chord jams (some hastily written before the recording session) are beds for Pop to howl and wail upon, but absent his vocals, they're as minimal as you can get. Still, this nihilistic anti-music represents an important break from the more conventional rock of 1969 and its echoes are evident in 70s punk rock and no wave.

Worship music in the church of miscreants and maniacs.

- More pedos. - I like the psychedelic punk feel to it. It must have felt super fresh when it came out. Iggy's voice is compelling, and the raw feeling to it all works. - We Will Fall ruined the flow of the album. It droned on forever without any change. It was kind of interesting for the first few seconds, but it got super annoying very fast, especially the backing vocals. - The huge panning right and left bothered me. - The lyrics are simple/repetitive, and hearing "shake, little doll" from pedos makes my skin crawl.

This is an interesting album to analyze. Some songs aren't great. Some songs are truly interesting especially for 1969. But overall, my enjoyment of the album was relatively low. I'm tethering between a 2 and a 3. I'll let my heart choose tomorrow.

3.5 rounded down. Pretty good! One of the best rock albums with a sneering, punkish energy from the 60s. Not exactly my kind of music but very good nonetheless

Really decent

There is no denying just how important this album was in the birth of punk. Now having said that, I think The Stooges hit their stride on the follow-up. 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog and No Fun are absolute classics but then We Will Fall will always remain a dredge to get through.

Started out great and then it got late 60s Charles Manson weird. Did the Stooges have a cult?

I get it but it's not for me.

Larry, Curly and Moe run laps around these guys

i think its pretty good! iggy pop is weird as frick tho

Fun album ... a little weird, but most fun things are

Had some decent licks in it but otherwise ended up relatively forgettable

Good for its time. Some of the tracks haven’t aged well.
