Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Good album, interesting vibe. 5.9/10
6/10
Kind of a Doors knockoff, but decent in it's own right with some straight ahead rock and some psychedelic undertones. Probably almost accidentally punk... 3
A couple of hits…
7/10
3.5
Pretty solid, especially for 1969. I get this was super influential, but Iggy Pop also kinda just sounds like Mick Jagger, and there were really only like three good-great songs. 1969 I Wanna Be Your Dog (by far the best song) Ann (sounds like Jim Morrison on this one)
Inoffensive old man 1960's rock. Nothing special, but nothing bad. I could do without "We Will Fall"
Enjoyed listening to it in the moment, but absolutely nothing of it stuck with me
So it starts off with a blast, two great rockers. Then we will fall which is a strange long and droning peace, as it goes on it gives me the creeps more and more. Back half is fine, no fun is good, Ann is alright downtrodden but a great climax. Not right brings the rockieness back… with poor lyrics Little doll is fine. There’s another track within it all but I don’t remember it. I never heard it before and I thought I was going to be really complementary of it but it was a let down, guess I prefer iggy solo. 3/5
Punk is never my type
Another Stooges, don't think I have this one. A couple of absolute classics on here, some not so great stuff. We will fall is so bad. Heard before? A couple Owned: No: 32/125 (25%) Will I get? No
Yeah...I was expecting a more frantic proto-punk sound, but this has elements that fit with 60s garage psych. I'm not sure it has the impact of 'Raw Power', but a good way to spend 35 minutes. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
I was kinda surprised at first, but then Iggy shows up and I suddenly got it.
I own a couple of Stooges albums but I'm not sure I ever listened to this debut.
Sorry but only three stars for me. Good, not great. Proto-punk yes. But much of actual punk was so much better.
It's an important record but people weight it way too heavily because I Wanna Be Your Dog is such a great song
3.5 stars. Dark and brooding, old-school garage rock. Iggy Pop howling over wailing guitars. Standout is the way ahead of its time "I Wanna Be Your Dog" with it's really catchy guitaring. Also good is the musical chanting backed "We Will Fall".
This is the worst of the 3 Stooges albums. Which doesn't make this bad by any means. Simpyl Fun House and Raw Power took it to the next level.
I was really enjoying this until We Will Fall never ended. Why is it so long!
First couple of tracks 10/10. Goes down hill
Really fun, rich sound.
Noch mehr alte Musiik, die damals sicher gut war.
Some of it is really good. Some of it is crap.
3.5
It started off so strong and then leveled out to meh. 3
I think The Stooges might be the most underappreciated band, behind maybe Uriah Heep, when it comes to the early metal scene. This was 1969. Just incredible. It's not the most talented album, but the energy is amazing. I enjoyed this listen.
IF RCHP had no energy. meh. its a vibe but not really grabbing me.
I wanna be your dog is the only notworthy track on this album. But i guess it is a big influence on the Punk scene. Rest is okey early punk("no fun" is pretty good) and "we will fall" is veeeery boring Psychadelic rambling a la 60s. Not that interesting to me but as a historical album to the development of punk i think it has a place on the list
Never been a fan of Iggy, couple songs I enjoyed. Mid to low 3 for me…
kenn fr fr glaub nur I wanna be your DAWG vo ihne und de song SLAPPT jo 1969 hautmi jz nöd vom höckerli OK GITARRE C'MAAAAUUUUNNN hahaha er singt so lasch, finds super we will fall denn gaaanz an andere vibe, fast hypnotisierend AHAAA krass proto-punk!!! find we will fall schono cool, nüt wo ich ab jz ständig wird lose aber s isch fast scho filmmusig WIE um alles ide welt han ich iggy and the stooges und the stooges nie verbunde?? wie blöd bin ich??? und jz hani in chopf auno de iggy und de danzig verwechslet und bin nomal.völlig usem konzept cho aber ja IGGY HÄ wie han ichs nie cheggt und ich glaub ellei weg ihrem ussehe hani denkt, sie segets brits hahah sooo vill confusion
I think this album is more influential than good for me. So
Ok, proto punk eh? Ya, I can get behind that for the most part, some of it didn't hit, but ya.
I know Iggy and the Stooges by name but I've never really given them a listen. This rocks much harder than I assumed it would. I can see where this set the stage for harder rock and grunge to come along years later. "1969" is a rock song, with big noisy guitars, I liked it. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is a popular track with over 119M listens, I've heard it covered by other artists. "No Fun" is fun, I can hear this in a bar by a local band, cool riff that never overwhelms the groove. The rest is filler, not bad, not great. "We Will Fall" has to be one of the dreariest songs I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. I'm not sure I understand how this one made the T1001. It has some good tracks but no hits, no revolutionary songs or vocals or instrumentation, it likely has had influence over the last 55 yrs but does that justify it's placement? 3 stars, and that's generous, but I liked a good portion of it.
Classic, songs I have heard but did not put a band nor face to
I like how they let you know what year it is when the album starts. He repeats it a bunch, so I'm not sure if he's reminding the listener, or if he keeps forgetting what year it is. This seems pretty noisy for the times. 1969, that is. Track 3 should be called We Will Fall Asleep. I just don't like this. It's too repetitive. The music is alright, and I imagine it was cool when it came out. Just isn't for me. 3
Psych rock, I guess
Classic garage rock, I prefer this to raw power.
Highlight Song/s: I Wanna Be Your Dog and No Fun Right here is the holy relic of punk music. If there IS a beginning to punk this would definitely be a fair contender. The album contents feature the most erratic frantic sneering vocals ever, guitars that are fuzzed out the wazoo, the screeching of the feedback loitering around the album. The album gives me some Beatles-esque vibes. Even though it is really loud, it has this pop charm to it hiding beneath all that distortion. The hand-claps in No Fun are very reminiscent of the first couple albums. Not Right sounds like something that could fit in Please Please Me (if you remove the distortion.) Some tracks that I have something to talk about: - I Wanna Be Your Dog has such an iconic riff, and a really good intro -We Will Fall sounds like a Christian hymn gone wrong, and became about the devil instead. It also sounds really dreadful, like awfully dreadful. -No Fun has one of my favourite riffs ever made. I always find the riff finding a way back into my mind, no matter what's happening. The vocals are top-notch, and the hand claps is the song's cherry-on-top.
Pretty forgettable but better than their last offering.
Na ja!
These guys just miss for me. The punk sound is cool but the electronic clatter just degrades it for me. Right on the 2/3 line, could go either way.
The weird atmospheric stuff was great.
This LSD is trippin' on album. Favorite Track: "We Will Fall".
it's more stooges
The first two songs are sensational - I wanna be your dog is one of the most ahead of its time songs we’ve had so far. Rest didn’t do it as much as Raw Power
Preferred this at its darker moments. We will fall was my highlight and wish it had continued more like that
If you’re into the Stones or the experimental phases of the Beatles, this one’s right over home plate
Sounds ok. I sometimes enjoy a bit of noise it adds energy to a track where it's necessary 'swamp song' for example, but so often it's pointless and detracts from the music. There were a few moments like that. But there were some good moments too.
# 582 : The Stooges The Stooges – Punk’s First Yawn I wanted to hate this. I really did. But it’s not all that bad. In fact, it’s kind of fascinating—short, raw, and weirdly experimental for its time. At just 34 minutes, it’s over before it begins, like a punk tantrum that burns out before it gets truly annoying. That said, this album feels like weaponized boredom. It’s the sonic equivalent of a teenager slamming their bedroom door and declaring themselves misunderstood. It’s good, not great—more historical artifact than enjoyable listen. “I Wanna Be Your Dog” is the pick of the tracks, mostly because it sounds like it knows what it wants. The rest? A bit of a shrug wrapped in distortion. Verdict: ★★★ for influence. File under “albums that invented punk’s posture, but forgot the punch.” Ranked # 488 on Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of all Time (2023) is probably about right.
Not my type
Killer opening two tracks. Then it all goes a bit late 60's fucked up weird.
Another one of those "I guess you had to be there". To my ears, this is something like "proto-punk", or even the true definition of punk. A lot of songs about sexual stuff, which is fine, I guess, but not very inventive. Made me want to listen to some stoner/drone bands, which is more of my style. Overall, a fine listen, but not something for my taste. Older folk might enjoy this a bit more, or someone with a taste for older music. Ok production for the time, but yeah, did not stick with me.
Old but good
Carried av Iggys otroliga uttryck som sångare. Mer experimentellt än väntat!
Inget specielt med detta
Stabilt!
Decent
What an interesting album. One third of it is dedicated to a song that is completely different than everything else on the album. Some sort of stoner/sludge sitar like song, where the rest are pretty typical of proto-punk and that late 60's early 70s garage scene. Definitely a fun listen, and it's easy to see the influence it has had on music.
Overall a pretty solid album. I liked it better than Iggy's solo work that I've heard. I thought most of the tracks, a couple of which I was already familiar with, were good, though a few of the others didn't really do much for me. It seems like it's stood up against time better than some of its contemporaries. The sound was definitely cool and influential. I liked the guitar tone they had here and how the music was a little more gritty than some of the other 60s rock albums on the list. I did think the droning parts got a little old and the songs were better when they kept them tighter. I'm going to say it's solidly good, but not something I'd consider a great. Overall: 3.3/5
Not for me, but I can see the appeal
Genre: Garage Rock A movement, a genre, a moment in time, entirely in its infancy. In that respect, it’s a very interesting listen, but overall, the sounds presented here have been fleshed out in a lot more meaningful ways since. This is certainly “proto”-punk, informing a lot of the minds who would go on to make more hardcore music later on. It was a fun listen, but personally, I don’t need to listen again. 3/5
Meh. I didn’t really know what to make of it. Maybe one to come back to. 6/10 20/09/25
Gritty bassy pumping nice riffs Iggy Pops vocals are also great, Its just a little samey it blends a little too well for me.
This is my second Stooges record. And while I like Iggy Pop a lot as a personality, I get sort of bored listening to the Stooges. I'm sure they put on a fun live show, but it doesn't really translate to studio recordings for me. Each song kind of drones on and on, and for the casual listener (like me), it's tough to discern where one song ends and the next starts. At least it's reasonably short. 2.8/5 Rounding up because it's still better than most of the records I've rated 2 stars, but it's not actually quite a 3-star record for me.
First 2 songs had me thinking I was finally gonna be sold on The Stooges, unfortunately the rest of the album was pretty hit or miss for me. If We Will Fall wasn't on here, I'd probably put this as my favorite in their discography.
3,5
This sounds cool, and it’s amazing how influential this was. I wouldn’t say the songs themselves blew me away. The 10 plus minute chant was a wild choice for a third track also.
A lot more psychedelic than I thought it would be. I only know "No Fun" and "I wanna be your dog", so this was a surprise. 3/5
Realistically this band is so famous because of their live performances. Still, I like Iggy Pop's vocals and the heavy guitar sounds here. Good for the 60s.
7/10
I want to be your dog is decent - the rest are a little less tuneful
We Will Fall is an extremely unwelcome addition to this otherwise straightforward and vital proto-punk record. Probably would've been an amazing EP without it - or could've been improved by including Asthma Attack in its place - which covers the same territory of weirdness in a briefer, more direct but equally dark way. This would've been a four, but it genuinely loses a point for this songs inclusion. Otherwise this is guilty of aping some pretty huge artists and doing so obviously from a compositional standpoint, but brings enough to the table from an ethos and timbre to remain a worthwhile listen. Somewhere between The Doors, the Velvet Underground and MC5 exists the Stooges, and this is one of their records - sometimes that's as much as you can say. Fun House and Raw Power are better.
I liked this overall, but a whole third of the album taken up by the dirge we will fall doesn’t allow me to rate it higher than a 3
The longest 34-minute album I've ever heard. Some tempo would really have changed things up.
Very funny to get this the day after MC5, we're just on a punk kick I guess! It's also great to be able to listen to Iggy Pop in his early days. He's great, I love the way he emphasizes things. There are some songs on here that are awesome and some that are not. We Will Fall is WAY too long and honestly drags down the album so much. Over all it was good and I liked it but it didn't blow me away.
I get the influence, but this drops off pretty significantly after the first two tracks and there's nothing here that's a "hell yeah" for me.
3.3 - Die Hits werden am Anfang rausgehauen und nach einem schwierigen langen Stück faded die Platte so aus. Highlights: 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog
Very new and creative, but also a little repetitive, and that 10 minute song could've been 4. Still, nice callback to Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Good relaxt.
01) 1969 - 9,0 02) I Wanna Be Your Dog - 9,0 03) We Will Fall - 6,5 04) No Fun - 8,0 05) Real Cool Time - 7,5 06) Ann - 7,0 07) Not Right - 6,5 08) Little Doll - 6,5 TOTAL: 7,50 (75/100)
Interesting album- I feel like it was ahead of its time. It almost sounds like proto-punk meets progressive rock. Overall- good album
There wasn't a lot that really stuck with me here. I Wanna Be Your Dog was kinda neat though.
Can certainly see the influence this had on bands such as the strokes, but this means in hindsight it can feel stale in places listening now. Regardless it was an interesting listen to an important part of music history
6/10… psychedelic rock / punk
Very good start but tailed off a bit (which is surprising given it was a short album). Not a bad effort.
For an album with one of the greatest garage tracks ever performed (I wanna be your dog, obvs), it’s all a bit of a letdown really. But I guess that’s the point, garage band first albums are always going to be more vibe than substance, these guys just lucked out on a John Cale single note piano solo.
Pretty sure I’ve heard some of this album before. It’s a really chill hang, sounds very much like a record from 1969. I always confuse the Stooges with the Velvet Underground. Iggy’s vocals are iconic, that snarl really draws you into this psychedelic world. I Wanna Be Your Dog is a classic song, reminds me of The Rolling Stones. I know Iggy from his bonkers performances while wearing transparent plastic pants on The White Room in the mid 90s which I watched every Saturday night at midnight on my shitty little TV that was sat at the foot of my bunk bed. I had no idea about The Stooges, I just thought he was a provocative old rock star who everyone just tolerated because of his legacy. The worst sunburnt skin you’ve ever seen. Now he’s got a BBC radio show. Go figure. This gets 3.5/5 from me. Doubt I’ll listen to it in full again.
While I respect what it did for the punk genre, it’s really not for me. 5/10 Top 2: 1. Ann 2. We Will Fall
This is a very strong debut and was influential for sure, but it isn't gold throughout. 100% should be on the list and worth hearing, but it had great moments vs was a great album.
Opens with a very classic rock and roll sound with a bit of slouching to it. The opening of the second track almost melted my face off. I get why this would imprint on people that heard this for the first time in their teens. The mixing is really working for me on We Will Fall. Real Cool Time is such a dumb song and I kind of like it for that. Some of this sadly comes too close to the sloppy vibe of The Doors. A slouch can start from a place of comfort but eventually it can go too far and your neck can end up where your ass started.
Very interesting album - I get the psychedelic rock vibes. Very rocky but not grungy, enjoyed the album. was musically sound.
Pre-registering some takes: The original gross lazy rockers. By that I mean, lyrically uninvolved, but rocking on dope musicianship enough to gloss over that. OTOH Iggy Pop produced some tracks I love (including one on this album!) but in my experience doesn't really have much in the way of a cohesive album. I always want to like him, but come away feeling a little underwhelmed. Review: Yeah this tracks. Some killer songs to start (No Fun, 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog), then runs out of steam fast. We will fall is a particular drag to me, but the whole backside is pretty meh. That said, those three leading songs are good enough to get this a 3.5. I'll round down though.
I'm not sure that this album was for me, but I can't fault it for that. The sounds of the album are just grating, but I get it and the why The Stooges would make it. I guess Iggy Pop would always be a musical contrarian and wanted The Stooges eponymous debut to be a rebellion against the prevailing music of the late '60s.
This is a short album, but somehow manages to feel too long. It's not that any of the tracks are bad on their own, but it's very repetetive. It's clear how influential this was to other bands, but honestly it's not great on it's own.
I liked the photo-punk feel.
Not bad, not all that notable either.
This is my first listen. I’m familiar with Iggy Pop as a solo artist, but less familiar with the work of the Stooges. More bluesy and Velvet Underground-y sounding than I expected, but the Stooges haven’t quite made BFFs with heroin yet. We Will Fall is the sound of the Doors at their most pompous, and doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the album. It’s a psychedelic odyssey and takes up more space than it should. The album is rough around the edges, which I like. It opens strongly and the last two tracks are good, but everything in the middle lets the album down. The influence on every scruffy garage band since is undeniable, but just because it’s influential, doesn’t make it good.
BB King - 7 LL Cool J - 7
Initially I really loved this album. Was heading towards a 5. Then we got to We Will Fall. Absolutely HATED it That and other parts later on knocked this down to a 3. Sad 3 ⭐️
weird but very enjoyable. it was a rollercoaster from good to bad and back again. overall positive feelings.
We Will Fall was half the album. It's decent, definitely a little basic sounding to me, but understand it's influential.
The Stooges: The Stooges: While this album is not bad, it wasn't great either. The vocals are very weak and weird, and the songwriting is pretty basic and standard. The song we will fall is also awful. Whatever. 5.5/10
Pretty good but I thought the Stooges were more aggressive -
Great apart from the random 10 minute chanting track
There's a difference between "seminal" or "influential" and "listenable". Though really, punk (proto-punk?) just isn't really my genre. Sort of Doors-like ("We Will Fall" reminds me vaguely of "The End", in that it's a slow, meandering ten-minute song). Maybe it's better if you're stoned? And it's the 60s?
Iggy! Love my boy. Album is iconic and one of the best album covers ever idc. Idk how much I’ll come back to it but I certainly enjoyed it!
Iggy Pop was pretty decent even before he started doing all the drugs!
I had no idea what to expect from this album, but it delivered a little bit of everything 1969.
Fav: I Wanna Be Your Dog Least Fav: We Will Fall I Wanna Be Your Dog for next Christmas no 1?
Heard it before. What an album, you really can see why it became so influential. My only problem with it is the random 10 minute track in the middle 3/5
This was a good album definitely an influence on the punk scene for sure! It was definitely an album tailored for something new! I'm definitely a fan of the stooges and Iggy pop but I'm not a die hard so this was more of an ok album for me, the last part of it was a little slow compared to the first half!
It's alright, Iggy rock.
3.5
Another album I didn’t hate but didn’t love.
Decent songs that they rode for the next 40 years. "I will fall" is such a ridiculous song and in the weirdest spot on the album that I almost respect it even if I don't like it. They helped start a revolution and a million bands trying to sound just like them. Gotta respect that part.
I liked it. Didn’t LOVE it. But it was nice to understand where all of those bands come from. I enjoyed it more that In Utero, for example. At times if felt like it was not 100% cohesive? Like totally different sounding songs like “We Will Fall”, which I really enjoyed by the way, but it’s just different from the rest of the album. Anyway, a good record, just not a 10/10.
151/1089 - Barely any substance to the songs at all. Very redundant. I do like Iggy Pop's voice though.
Rockiges Album zu dem ich aber keinen Bezug finde. Am Ende ist es eher schlecht als Recht.
The birth of punk. Iggy Pop started here and the legend grew. You can only play this lp on 11
Much, much, MUCH better than Iggy Pop's The Idiot. Absolute night and day. Anyways, garage rock's never really been my thing. I like a song here or there (Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet, for example), but I'm not really clamoring for this type of music. Perfectly fine listen, but just not really my thing.
A young Iggy full of anger. Some classics some not so
Not wild about this debut as a whole, but there’s a lot to like and respect for sure
I don’t quite remember but. I think it was a okay
Iggy Pop's debut album with his band The Stooges is a great start to his work. From unconventional usage of sleighbells to funeral chants, each track develops its own musical identity on the album. Additionally, the scratchy guitar playing over simple beats on No Fun reminded me of WITCH, also Ann reminded me of The Doors. I found that a bit distracting and just wanted to listen to them instead. Notable Tracks: We Will Fall, No Fun,
Sounded like generic rock, which usually isnt my thing, but I did enjoy listening to it. Vocals were good as well
This was my generated album number 200! However not my 200th rating, as I’ve postponed it for 8 months. (Sorry, Iggy Pop.) So I’m quite the punk hater, meaning the genre description had me frightened. However, I thought there was some nice guitar work on the album. Also, you know that 10-minute incredibly repetitive third track? I absolutely loved that one. Great stuffs. But the album in general I thought was rather average and I can’t imagine I’ll return to it. Maybe there was a reason I postponed this for 8 months.
I wanted this to be less boring but the songs where they don't go heavy are terrible. What on earth is "We Will Fall" doing on here? And "Ann"? They're both just boring drone with Iggy saying some random nonsense. Unfortunately that's a solid 15 minutes out of a 34 minute album. The rest of this is actually pretty great proto-punk. I like the tone of it all; it's almost doom-y. I just wish the bad parts weren’t so long.
Did not go as hard as I would have liked
3.5
Was expecting more punk
The Stooges will be my final Stooges and also my final Iggy Pop album to review. My experience with both the Stooges and Iggy Pop's solo material has been pretty positive. The only Stooges album I'd listened to before starting this project was Raw Power, but I was shocked that I liked Fun House more. As far as Mr. Pop's solo material goes, The Idiot was fine, but I really loved Lust For Life. I'm expecting that I'll enjoy this album as well, and it should be the perfect thing to listen to on this hot Memorial Day weekend. Overall,. I thought this self-titled effort from The Stooges was fine. The lead guitar and bass playing were great, but I wasn't really wowed by a lot of the songs on here, especially on the second side of the album. I liked that this album blended garage rock with psychedelic elements and song structures, but the second side of the album just kind of ran together to my ears. It was cool to listen to, but nothing special. The ten minutes of "We Will Fall" really lost me as well. I can tolerate some weird and experimental stuff, but ten minutes of that was just too much. As for the songs that I did like, "1969" grabbed a hold of me right away with its outstanding guitar playing. I loved the fuzziness of the guitar, the drone of the bass, and punchiness of the handclaps. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" was awesome too. The drumming provided a great groove, and the main guitar riff was hypnotic. Iggy Pop's vocals were a perfect match for the instrumentation. All in all, this album was fine, but I found it more enjoyable as a piece of music history than as a piece of pure music to enjoy.
While its definitely an important album in music history, and has some great tracks, lets be honest "We Will Fall" is straight up filler. Definitely should listen for cultural edification, but I prefer other albums by Iggy and The Stooges over this one.
3/5 Ihan kivaa räimettä. Ymmärrän albumin valinnan tälle listalle.
Tämä oli sellainen perushyvä. Ei nyt ehkä erityisesti jäänyt mieleen, mutta en vaihtaisi kanavaa.
Poikkeuksellisen raskas levy 60-luvun osalta, vaikka toki kyseisen vuosikymmenen loppua kohden monia kovemman rokin bändejä ilmaantui. Tässä on hyviä kappaleita, mutta ehkä hitusen liian rosoinen soundi omaan makuun. Lisäksi kappaleet kuten we will fall herättävät lähinnä kysymyksen - miksi?
This was a lot of fun but “We Will Fall” was a slog and I skipped it.
Ok listen. thank goodness it only 30+ minutes
Raw but also primitive, almost antediluvian. Some great moments - the riff in Wanna Be a Dog, the uh-huhs in Little Doll - but not enough for me overall.
Very very nice - whole album very enjoyable, but the softer songs were better for sure, especially the longest track.
A landmark album I honestly had never listened to before. I certainly was aware of them and Iggy Pop but just hadn't taken the time to give it a spin until it came up here. I get the impact and influence but at 34 minutes, I thought it was long... I've listened, I'll probably never do that again.
Expected to really like this album but found it pretty boring outside of the first two tracks… We Will Fall kinda killed it for me. Rounding up for the opening tracks. 2.75/5
Reeks of debut album, Rolling Stone wannabes. The hits are decent and I enjoy the instrumentals, but boy does this feel like a rushed album and the lead singer/lyrics are really weak to the point of wanting to skip some songs. This is the first album here where I'm surprised it made the list since it's only okay and there's (apparently) so much more to come from them. A more thought-out polished product *might* have earned 4 stars. I'm looking forward to their later albums.
This starts off so strong with 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog, but then plunges you into the 10 minute long slog that is We Will Fall. It’s bold and foreboding, but does anyone claim to actually like this song? Things get back on track with No Fun (is the title a cheeky comment on the previous track?). 3 stars, easily could’ve been 4 if Iggy and co had taken a slightly different tack.
Great guitar, meh lyrics, average songs. Nothing overly special or memorable for me.
🎸 dweeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiwwoooooooweiiiiiiiioooo waaaaaaeeeeeeeaiiiooe iiiiiiiiiiioooiiiiiiii 🎸
Forgettable; I couldn't even remember if I had listened to it.
There are a lot of duds here. A lot of filler. And when it's good, songs just sort of fade away instead of ending. And it never feels finished.
Not quite as good an album as I remember, some good tracks but some that sound like filler and amble. The good stuff is scuzzy rock n roll the less good is a bit without shape.
GTA 4 liberty rock radio song spotted
Musically quite good, lyrics are awful though.
This was worth listening too. Super raw. Can see how they are pioneers of the punk movement. Cool stuff. We will fall was not needed to be that bloated. Three stars.
Listens: 1 Stand out tracks: We Will Fall. Ram Jai, Jai Ram! We Will Fall is pretty weird. I don't understand the lyrics or the chant itself, but there's some pretty wild guitar playing on the over 10 minute long track. Cursory research at least partially suggests that it's filler content, considering the album would be only ~25 minutes otherwise. I don't know if the track fits on the album or not. This is the first time I've ever heard a Stooges song, let alone an entire album, but I dig it. I also enjoy the vocalist (frontman?) screaming his voice into nothingness at the end of 1969.
- ganz stimmig, aber wie so oft.. nicht wirklich was hängen geblieben - würde trotzdem zu 3/5 tendieren
Some parts of the album were really interesting, but there is no doubt that this is an old record and this was too jarring for me.
Just ok.
I’ve listened to this before and like a few songs on it but its not as enjoyable for me as their later stuff
Slower than expected. Still good.
Interesting, not quite for me.
A couple of excellent tracks in this one, but I some weaker ones too.
I like this more than their other record on here. This has the better hits and better production.
nice enough
I didn't mind this. Interesting for it's context, some fun instrumentation but not sure I really liked it. I appreciated it, I guess.
not bad for not for me
This had some clunkers for me that dropped it from a possible 4 to a 3. I suspect I'd have listened to this differently in 1969, but I was 3 and those clunkers would not have been appreciated then either.
Slow and heavy and cold. So unusual for the era. A real showcase of style over talent. Fun without being too serious about it.
Solid effort. 3.5 stars
3.5
The album sizzles. Very enjoyable. Mid 3s.
Well I like this, but I want to like it more. A couple of highs but some real drags too.
This album starts so strong, arguably two great back to back tracks in 1969 and I wanna be your dog. But from there it looses its steam and momentum, which is a shame because I adore this opening, it’s just not really a great listen beyond the opening.
3.6
I went in with high hopes that weren't quite realised. I'd have probably been blown away at the time but it didn't quite hit
I Wanna Be Your Dog is on regular play for me (under Christmas songs that aren’t). So I was curious about the rest of the album. It’s interesting and creative, but nothing I’d add to my playlists.
3/5
Elephant in the room is We will Fall for being a very weird vibe shift. 10 minutes of a mantra on a punk album is a wild choice. The rest of the album is cool enough. I dig punk as a genre and while I’ve heard some Stooges and solo Iggy Pop stuff I never really gave them a fair go. Happy for the ride and while I appreciate the cobble stones that the Stooges laid on the path I’m content not returning too frequently. Maybe on a mix tape but that one song was so out of place it fucked with the momentum of the album.
Starts off with two upbeat songs that get you going, and then everything comes crashing to a halt with We Will Fall. The monotonous chanting that takes up a third of the original release and totally kills the vibe just about does it in for me. And then it picks up only for Ann to slow the album down just two songs later. Maybe I’ll give the extended edition a chance because I enjoyed the majority of the album, but I’ll be skipping those two tracks.
we will fall is laughably experimental but respect for taking the swing... this is such a "fringe" 60's rock album. I don't mean that in a bad way, but they sound so similar to bands that I've listened to on repeat for years. Part of me finds this warming because I have a connection to this style of music and understand it in the context of the amazing music made at this time. The other part of me is saying, well it's not this and that.... I really enjoyed the song no fun and the bass intro on little doll is lovely. maybe if you've never listened to 60's or 70's rock you would love this??
One of those foundational albums that I want to like more, but this style of slow growly punk just isn’t my thing. I can see how it inspired a lot of subsequent stuff, though.
Mick Jagger impression is impressive, music is not
A few years ago, I was lucky enough to see The Stooges live at a small venue in Austin during SXSW. It was a sweaty, electrifying show, with every member—especially Iggy—playing like their lives depended on it. The raw intensity was palpable, and I couldn't help but think, if this is how they perform in their 70s, imagine the chaos in their prime. Afterwards, I dove into their discography, finding much to love but also some question marks. The Stooges is undeniably revolutionary. Its influence on punk, garage rock, and alternative music is profound, though it wasn’t initially recognized. The album’s refusal to conform to the norms of its time laid the groundwork for entire movements in rock music. The raw energy, rebellious spirit, and reflection of a society in upheaval make this a crucial listen for anyone studying the evolution of rock. That said, the listening experience can be hit or miss. Tracks like "1969" and "No Fun" bring that electric, chaotic energy—the kind I felt at their live show. These moments capture the essence of The Stooges: untamed, aggressive, and thrilling. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" stands out as the band's anthem, a track so visceral and suffocating that it hits just as hard after 500 listens as it did the first time. Iggy’s growls and desperate pleas create an atmosphere that is as hypnotic as it is primal. It's one of punk's timeless anthems, perfectly embodying the band's sound and spirit. But not every track lands with the same intensity. "Real Cool Time," "Not Right," and "Little Doll" are decent but less memorable. They veer toward familiar blues-rock structures, lacking the urgency and rawness that made the album so revolutionary. The production plays a role here—while some tracks pulse with raw immediacy, others fall flat, missing the chaos that fuels the band's best moments. "We Will Fall" is the album's biggest misstep. It meanders in a drone-like fashion, with its minimalist approach not justifying its length. Here, producer John Cale’s avant-garde tendencies take the spotlight, but instead of enhancing the album, it disrupts the flow, leaving the listener waiting for something to happen. The album’s "amateurish" nature is part of its charm, though. The Stooges weren’t aiming for polished, commercial sound. Their ethos was all about rejecting the clean, formulaic rock that ruled the era. Instead, they embraced a raw, unrefined style that would define punk rock's DIY spirit. But while this approach is groundbreaking, at times, it makes some tracks feel like sketches rather than finished works. The Stooges is a 5/5 for its attitude, influence, and pioneering spirit. It shaped the course of modern rock. As a cohesive album, though, the uneven tracklist brings it down to a 3.5/5 at best. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? The Stooges’ legacy is undeniable. Their influence reverberates through bands like The White Stripes and countless others that carry the torch of punk’s primal energy. Would this release make my personal list? The album as a whole is not for me. Will I be listening to it again? Inject "I Wanna Be Your Dog" into my veins any time you want.
I was previously familiar with the Stooges and Iggy Pop solo, but not this particular album. This album has some good moments that I enjoyed, but We Will Fall is way too long and honestly took away from the momentum of the album for me. Overall I would say this album is good not great. I may listen again but likely would not seek it out.
3/5 solely for I wanna be your dog, would have been substantially lower otherwise
Interesting, a classic. Of course I wanna be your dog and especially No Fun are good songs, the start of punk, in a way, even if it is a little slow. Ann is interesting in itself, sort of doomsday love song. We will fall is endless, but not in a good way, monotonous, out of place in my eyes. All in all a classic album, but not one to play on repeat. 3.5
Ok
Liked it more than I thought I would, but they seem like Doors/Bowie wannabes.
I think I'd be bored at one of their gigs, but it's not terrible.
Probably too much forgotten in terms of their influence on the music of that era. They certainly liked to experiment, but not everything they try here is successful.
Weird as shit I was surprised about the rest of this album. Maybe if I was more of a stoogehead
I get that the Stooges are supposed to be fundamental to punk rock but I can't pull this above three stars.
It's really just ok. Their next 2 albums are better. Will I listen to again: 30%
Interesting fuzzy, gritty and wah-filled sound. Opens strong but "we will fall" takes all the steam out of it. Iggy pop has a similar nasaly voice that other punk artists do but pulls it off better.
Old times, psychedelics and music instruments.
Clearly a blueprint to be followed by punk rock almost 10 years later. So you can see that this is a very influential band. I only enjoyed a few of the songs though (particularly the faster ones).
#410. I might have liked this album more if not for We Will Fall. What the fuck even was that? The rest of the album was pretty cool, but then they slapped that silly shit right in the middle of it for no readily apparent reason. 3/5: I don't know
"I Wanna Be Your Dog" is awesome. Rest is pretty meh
Loved most of the songs on this album. A few skips, hence the 4.
Starting strong, but got worse as the album progressed 3/5
This was definitely better than their stupid album Raw Power that our group all collectively hated. Maybe it being their debut album they weren't getting too crazy. I am not sure if it is because it was a 2019 Remaster but there were some points where the guitar was way too loud compared to the rest of the instruments. Kind of sounds like a punk version of Rolling Stones. Much more rock heavy than punk which is more my speed. We Will Fall was maybe the strangest song I have ever heard with all of the chanting, but it honestly was really cool and worked and was probably my favorite song on this album with how crazy it was. Nothing mind blowing with this album but it rocked at points.
I Wanna Be Your Dog needs to be at least 2 minutes longer that song rules. Album reminded me of some early Doors in a good way.
Started off strong until the third song.
The long song was kinda boring. Alright but nothing crazy imo
This is probably what the Velvet Underground would’ve sounded like in 1969 if Andy Warhol had not been involved.
Definitely challenging people’s definition of music at the time. Unimaginative lyrics, but interesting instrumentation.
I know the Stooges are proto-punk, but I'm going to lump them in with punk. I prefer talent in my bands. It's best when it's songwriting and musicianship/singing ability all in one package. But I need some in at least one of those categories. The Stooges have some songwriting ability, but not much in terms of musical ability. I'll round up to 3* just because of their pioneering aspect, not so much that I enjoyed their music.
Good,
Dece rock 🤘 stooges are one of my faves but this is not my personal fave of their repertoire
Favorite Track: 1969
Didn't get all the way through the album, but what I heard was...OK. I'm sure in 1969 it was radical, but half of it sounded like they wanted to be the Rolling Stones.
What I expected: aggressive, stripped down proto-punk with minimal instrumentation and growling lyrics. What I got: aggressive, stripped down proto-punk with minimal instrumentation and growling lyrics, and a ten-minute drone track with ominous chanting and no explanation. Not awful, not all expected, but I do think Iggy Pop got better with age.
A couple excellent songs does not make a great album. Feels like more attitude than musically interesting.
Bestiales.
Didn't get to this yesterday but I'll play a few of these I don't think I'll listen to the whole 2 hrs. We Will Fall is cool, slow dark and morbid. Oh damn it's a 10 min track. Meh I'm not going to listen to the whole thing. I like the old 60s rock sound for sure but.. 3 stars.
Didn't really care. The songs were just kinda there didn't do anything for me one way or the other. Didn't really mind them but didn't make me really feel anything either. Iggy's voice was fine. Instruments fine.
I love Iggy Pop and the Stooges, and I love the legacy they have created. This album just doesn't thrill me though.
Probably the best pure garage rock album, strong singles, but unlike most hard rock albums from this era, the whole album is actually good. Deserves to be celebrated. B
Influential and historic, but too basic for me. I Wanna Be Your Dog is a great song, but there are many others that just don’t do it for me. Lyrically, The Stooges is obviously lacking. Musically, they were foreshadowing the creation of Punk in the 70s. Punk being one of my favorite genres, I have to respect The Stooges. That being said, I think Raw Power is better. John Cale has some nice production on here for the time, and Iggy is an icon, but overall, it’s not something I see myself revisiting very often.
až na hlavní singl nic nevyčnívalo.
Aaaourf, Iggy m’a habitué à plus que ça, je me sens légèrement trahis, leger 3
Then went a little harder than I was expecting
It was alright, I only listened to the songs once instead of the four times they were on that album
Some real killer, a bit too much filler to be truly great. A proper influential album that we can thank for some of the best garage rock subsequently. Album drags towards the end, reusing sone tricks and even some of the killer drags on (no fun should be half as long). I do love the chanting!
I really wanted it to be 4, but it just isn't, no matter now influential
It’s a fine album, the sound for sure would have influenced a whole slew of people in the 70s.
Definitely a debut album. Good, not great.
This one just doesn't quite hit for me in the same way that Raw Power does
Bangers, men 10-min låten var lite skum
Bien. Normal.
Somehow mid
An album that seems standard and generic by today's standards but only because back in 1969 it was a trailblazer and a revolution. The influence from this record is ubiquitous and perennial. You haven't heard any rock music that hasn't been blessed by its roots. The highlight for me was "Ann". Love how slowed down and haunting that one was.
There are parts of this album I thought I was listening to The Doors. The standout tracks, I Wanna Be Your Dog and No Fun are still awesome.
some bangers, really long song that goes nowhere
It wasn't unlistenable, but it didn't make me want to listen either.
I liked this more than the last album we had by The Stooges.
Not quite as angry and raw as the previous album I listened too but not my thing.
Don't know the Stooges. Don't know Iggy Pop. This was ok. No particular affection
I like it more than I thought I would but not a much as it deserves
Brit rock. Again 😑
Front half of the album is great. Back half wasn’t as engaging for me.
This album started out with a bang on the first two songs but then followed it up with 10 minutes of the most inane bullshit I've ever heard. It never quite picked back up from there
Fuck is this shit 😭
We Will Fall is the biggest left turn on an album I've heard in a really long time. Pretty solid scummy pre punk rock album in general but that song makes this record interesting. I wanna be your dog is a classic jam. There's a bit of a velvet underground vibe in the sense of it just being lo fi but just great chemistry and rocking songs.
It's a bit of a mixed bag for me. I like the weird fuzzy spacey guitars, and I like the rawness of it. Some songs are excellent. Others are a bit murky and more meandering. It's a pretty good album overall. I mean, cam' ahwn!
Classic album, not indicative of where Iggy Pop ended up. But it was definitely a unique album.
Raw energy bursts in the beginning. The sound is gritty and primal. It's a relentless ride through rebellious rock. The vocals howl with a wild, untamed spirit. There was a unnecessarily long song which took my attention away, then the rest just kinda fell off.
Felt like stoner rock, hard on the strings with words strewn in, would probably be a lot cooler if i was on psychedelics. 2.5
Important in its time. I didn’t mind it but wouldn’t be inclined to listen again.
I really tried to like this one. It started on the right track with 1969. I tried to place it in time and being ahead of its time, but there is so much better music from that time period. There were moments of really great rock guitar but way too much of weak lyrics and vocals for me to appreciate. I scored it with a 3 out of appreciation for the time period but not enough end to end for greatness!
Fyrir ekki svo löngu poppuðu The Stooges upp og mér fannst þeir bara vera meðalband. Ekkert sem stóð upp úr. Svo kemur þessi plata og þá komst maður í gírinn. Þriðja lagið, We Will Fall, var samt frekar leiðinlega langt fyrir það sem það var og dregur þá niður. Set hana samt örugglega aldrei aftur í spilun. Það þýðir meðalmennska.
Utterly forgettable, but not boring per se. Just completely middle-of-the-road
I can hear the blues, and I can hear the rock that followed. The sound fine, but I'm just not into it.
He says come on a lot on this. We will fall is an interesting 10 minute song. I think I wanna be your dog is my fav.
I was a little afraid about this one going into it. It's not what I was expecting at all and was pretty decent.
it was cool! sort of weird and grating at times but other times very fun
just whatever
Not a bad record although I think it could be better under different circumstances rather than listening while working at 8 in the morning on a Tuesday. Felt longer than 35 minutes because it kind of drones on at parts. I appreciate the significance and influence of this record though. Up until today I thought Tropical Fuck Storm wrote Ann instead of it being a cover.
We Will Fall seemed unnecessarily long. I dug the first couple songs and like the instrumentation but overall it felt middle of the road for me.
Mix of paces, psychedelic at times
Fine
Some really good songs - I Wanna Be Your Doll being one - but they're eclipsed by We Will Fall. A 10-minute song on a 35 minute album, it is repetitive and not a fun listen. Otherwise, this is a good listen.
Some great songs and some strange ones. I wouldnt listen again but it was enjoyable.
I Wanna Be Your Dog // We Will Fall //
Solid late sixties rock album. They use the distinctive distortion of the era lending to a time capsule feeling.
Love the sound of the stooges, although this is not my favourite of their albums
Bien. Estilo Rolling
1969 & I Wanna be your dog are brilliant tracks, the rest of the album is so-so
Hard to rate. For the 60s this was apparently super influential and I believe it, that being said I think it's a couple of good songs and a bunch of meandering. I need to stick with did I enjoy listening to this without context, so probably just a 3.
If you've heard 30 seconds, you've practically heard the song. Some songs are fun, some songs are boring and 10 minutes long. Still pretty cool considering the era it was released in.
Classic proto punk. Dirty ugly and hits the spot. The long slow song is a bit dull.
Some of these tracks are cool as hell
An interesting album in a historical context, but personally I didn't enjoy it as much as their Raw Power album.
Not really my flavour but I appreciate it's place in music history.
Suitably Stoogey.
Liked it all except We Will Fall, such a waste of 1/4 of the album.
For some reason what I’ve discovered is that I’m not much for the 60s sound unless it’s The Beatles. This was ok but once again I’ll never choose to listen again except for one or two tracks. But there’s nothing overtly bad either. 3/5
Classic Detroit beginning of punk rock sound. Thanks Iggy et al.
Nothing special, but it was good.
look sometimes it was really good and i understand why it’s on this list but overall just wasn’t a huge vibe for me
Fun in t begin, beetje jammer daarna
We will Fall kinda puts a cramp on the flow of the album.
Was ok - some quite atmosoheric tracks.
Probablement l'album des Stooges que j'ai le moins aimé, mais ça restait très divertissant, très en avance sur son temps. 7/10
Pretty good first album for seminal punk band.
Nice enough. Started out strong, lulled in the middle, ended decent. Funky would give 2.5 if I could
Was ok. Liked the second song.
Not really feeling it
Not bad, but a bit forgettable.
Thoughts before listening: Proto-punk from Detroit led by Iggy Pop. It's really fun primitive rock n roll with a wild man singing. Good stuff. Review: I really like most of this album. "1969", "I Wanna Be Your Dog", and "No Fun" are absolute classics. "We Will Fall" however is a completely unnecessary 10 minutes that hurts the album as a whole. 3-stars for a mostly fun album.
interesting
Listened Before: N I had no idea what to expect going into this one and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, it has it's moments of abrasiveness, but overall it's a great record and an awesome history piece foreshadowing the coming punk rock movement. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: I Wanna Be Your Dog
Where the hell did that third track come from...?
This entire album and group was new to me, but I enjoyed most of it!
This was fine. 2.5.
Curate’s egg, one really long boring song though
a little too clean (eg, i want the guitar solos to get crazier, nastier)? repetitive? to be interesting enough for me to want to listen again
American Rock, nothing pops out necessarily
Noch so eine lärmige Band aus den sagenumwobenen 69ern. Und schon wieder aus Detroit. Aber was soll ich sagen, es gibt richtige Songs, mal laut mal leise. Find ich gut.
Love the amount of edge these clowns brought to music at the time. Unfortunately, the sound has evolved so much since then.
Not so sure about this... 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' is a really cool song, but the rest is not up to par. I can imagine this was quite fresh when it came in '69 though. I think with that in mind it's going to have to be a very weak 3.
