if I heard this in red dead I wouldn't be mad

4/10 - hillbilly folk

This is the gritty indie movie everyone is telling you about but you just don’t want to watch.

Didn't stick

4 - Linda > Richard. Can see shades of mermaid ave in this but far lower quality

Got bored pretty easy

not for me

Never heard of them but a husband and wife folk duo is pretty cute. I’m imagining Nuts in May, which may be unfair. Withered and Dried - Linda has a lovely voice - mate, I think I prefer your wife. I enjoyed the title track. I am also sick of working every day!! Very different approach musically but vibe wise almost identical themes to Arctic Monkey’s first album, as well as Hard-Fi’s seminal ‘living for the weekend’. God this is maudlin. It is technically good, but even the ‘upbeat’ ones are wistfully sad. Also, you never hear about ‘briar’ except in folk songs. ‘Little beggar girl’ could be subtler. The lyric ‘there’s nothing to grow up for anymore’ pissed me off. I guess I’ll just top myself then Rich, cheers for that mate.

All a bit bland. Not enough emotion in the vocal style. Got way too folky for me in places too.

When this popped up I thought to myself 'who the hell is this?' and decided to not look at the Wiki and go in blind. Sadly temptation got the better of me and saw it was something to do with Fairport Convention. Not a good start. Stuck it on and was unsurprised by the early 70's folkiness of it. But the big surprise was that I didnt have any strange allergic reaction to it. Although I had to try not to cringe at the song titles and completely tune out the lyrics, the songs swung between pretty good and plain average. By the way I am being complimentary here considering its hippie burn the incense vibe. 'Calvery Cross' indeed. Just for that title I'll knock off 3 stars.

Pretty depressingly lyriced folk music.

Best song, Little Beggar Girl. I dig the Irish style and her voice came down to a more pleasant tone. It’s a bit too shrill in the higher register for my taste.

This could really use some blast beats. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing

hi guys, me and my wife just achieved our life goal of creating the most mediocre album in history ft: calvary cross

A couple of little ear worms but not my type of stuff.

Thematically all over the place, which was jarring at times. The Calvary Cross is lovely.

I saw the bright lights, when I accidentally drove into traffic.

There's one or two good songs on this. Otherwise it's kind of annoying Irish/English sounding folk.

british but country music?

Country Americana sound weaves into British singer-songwriter, Joni Mitchell-like folk. It was good but at times slow. Solid 2.5, but don’t know if Incan go to 3. Upon researching, I think the rest of their catalog might be a little more rock.

When I Get To The Border

Not all of this was annoying and whining, but a lot of it was.

Apparently a good example of a genre I don't like. Extra star for that

I think this was another case of someone’s favorite album being included for sentimental reasons. My dad loves Australia’s The Seekers, but I don’t think I would put them on my personal 1001. At first I thought this duo were also Australian, because they sound like the Seekers. I was a bit surprised (not really considering the 1001 origin) that they were British. Their melodies are nice together, much better than if I made an album with my wife. However, this was a bit too folky Medieval minstrel for personal tastes. The Little Begger Girl was a grit-your-teeth-and-listen, however Linda’s voice on The Great Valerie was angelic. If I had a favorite song it would be I Want to See with the Flamenco trumpets, German Oom-pha horns, and 1970s disco-folk vibe. In the THC experimental times of the mid ‘70s this album probably fit. I don’t know if I needed this album to be blunt, and will probably not remember listening to it in a month.

No me llamo nada ma atención 4/10

Mostly a pretty basic folk rock album. Not my thing. It’s too minimal and underwhelming for me. It wasn’t offensively bad or anything, but I can say I enjoyed it much. 5/10

Pretty unremarkable

Not gonna lie, on the first verse of the first track I was ready to give up on this record and couldn't wait to get my ears to the border ASAP. I lack the historical context or cultural knowledge to recognize who Richard and Linda Thompson are. I had never heard of the record and was not prepared to have a dour-rain soaked folksy morning. But somewhere along the way of my forced listen, my rejection softened as I got comfortable with the vocals and instrumentation. And, I became interested in the stories being told. Without investing that interest in the album's narratives I think it's much harder to appreciate. Ultimately I won't reach for it when I want these vibes as I have many more contemporary expressions of these feelings that I have a personal connection to. But there's more here than that initial look had given. Maybe I just needed to wipe the steam off the mirror to see it more clearly.

2 out of 5. Almost a three, but just too samey to me.

Definitely not my favorite style of music, but it was fine for what it is, 2 stars

I know Richard Thompson is a excellent guitar player, I just wasn't moved by anything here. Disappointed, I was expecting more

C30, A8 München - Augsburg, Deutschland. Stark angefangen, stark nachgelassen.

im grown enough to admit i dont care about folk

too slow for my personal taste

565/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

This might have been good if I was hearing it live in a pub about 200 years ago

My wife liked it. It was good. A bit sing songy.

A New House Beige shrug of an album

Kind of folky, Irish-y at times. Not my vibe, but some of it is catchy.

27/02/2026 It's a harmless album, can't say I enjoyed it much though. Spotify listeners: 133.9k

Eh. Didn't really stick with me

I was enjoying the first half of the album well enough, but it lost me in the second half. Richard from my favorite troubadour band Fairport Conventions, just couldn’t save this one for me.

This is a collection of songs I had to sing in 6th grade chorus (with a flare of Jefferson Airplane thrown in). Didn’t understand the songs then and I still don’t now. I’m going to assume I’m not the target audience here and just move on to tomorrow’s selection without dwelling.

The Nickelback of British folk rock.

The album was initially ignored by both listeners and critics. Critics came back to this album and saw it's brilliance later, hence it finding its way onto this list. Critics are idiots.

I was into it in the beginning but then it started to turn into a trip to a the renaissance faire...

Maybe it’s because I’m going through a bad time in my life but I just didn’t find this very interesting.

Songzeile Life seems so rosy in the cradle But I'll be a friend, I'll tell you what's in store There's nothing at the end of the rainbow There's nothing to grow up for anymore ... das 1974 zu singen ist konterrevolutionär. Dafür hab ich nicht tonnenweise Lucky Charms gefuttert.

This one is truly peaks and valleys. Some of these tracks are quite good but others are a little tough to get through. Overall not bad.

First double blind actually. I’d never heard of the artist or album, but I realized that I had heard “withered and died” in movies and stuff. Overall not my thing. Kind of low energy, surprised it made the list honestly

++: I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight, Down Where the Drunkards Roll, The Great Valerio +: The Calvary Cross, Has He Got a Friend for Me +-: When I Get to the Border, Withered and Died, The End of the Rainbow -: We Sing Hallelujah, The Little Beggar Girl 4,6/10

No my cup of tea.

Kinda too twangy for me, sounds like Jefferson airplane but country like . 2 stars

I wanted to like this more than I did, but it just never really clicked. Most of the album felt flat to me, even though I can tell there’s skill behind it. It just didn’t grab my attention or give me much reason to stay invested. The lone bright spot was the Together Again bonus track, which is also telling since it’s the one song not written by either Thompson.

This feels so close to something great but i think my reaction is worse for the fact that it’s not quite there. It all just feels a little bit thin and to be honest i was more interested in the wikipedia page than the actual album. Also maybe im just forcing myself to have a stronger reaction to not give another 3? Who’s to say.

Eh this didn't do much for me. Also had never heard of it?

Forgettable

Not quite what I thought it would be but not too far off...

i don*t like country

Terrible, Jesus Christ

Slow rolling easy listening. This sounds like a record to drink good beer with great friends to. Stronger first half then second half. Ok, the last two songs would not be a great way to end our night of fun with lyrics like "there's nothing at the end of the rainbow" and whatever sad ballad came as the finale. Not bad songs just a few choices throughout that I thought were a bit odd. 2 outta 5

Not my cup of tea.

As someone whose knowledge of folk music from this era comes from Tom Morello's advocacy for it on his radio shows and my mother's love of Arlo Guthrie, I wanted to give this the benefit of the doubt. But as this was not released outside of the UK for NINE YEARS, didn't sell, was largely ignored by critics, and nearly put me to sleep, I just can't. I mean, it's fine. There is nothing necessarily wrong with it. It's just another filler album on the list that seems to be promoting British musicians that the editors personally like. Zero reason to hear this before you die. Influence 1. Hits 1. Quality 4. Intangibles 1. So, so many 2's on this list.

Yeah this is definitely an album... Not really much to say about it. Just very unremarkable. Should I have listened to this before I die? Apparently so, but I wouldn't agree. Just a very unremarkable album scoring just above the lowest mark, since it isn't bad but really not good either. 2/5

Says it was rock, sounded more like folk to me. Wasn’t that fun.

Bit meh

Linda is way better than ol’ Dick. Folk but not? Either way I hope they saw the bright lights and moved on.

It’s a step up from Fairport Convention, but I could only picture the cast of A Mighty Wind while listening.

Found this a little annoying, the folk rock got old pretty quick.

After seeing it was a husband/wife folk duo, I was less than excited. But I was pleasantly surprised, I thought he sounded a lot like father John misty on a lot of tracks, and her voice is familiar too though I couldn't place it. The last song on the album was my last favorite though, which is gonna round this 2.5 down.

A little slow

If your favorite Beck album is Sea Change, this is the album for you. I really liked the first song and the title song. The rest sounds fine, but I don’t see myself going back to this one. Songs added to the playlist: When I Get to the Border I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight

163 WHYYYYYYY!? Tenía aires medios irish a ratos que lo hicieron tierno, pero la mayoría del tiempo pensé en que necesito mínimo 5 espressos para poder escuchar esto.

Instrumentation is really strangely varied from song to song, sometimes they think they're a rock band, sometimes just some guys in a pub with a guitar and female lead, sometimes they're a shanty group. Guess I can die now that I've listened to this.

Not my style

Generally pleasant enough folk music, although i didn’t enjoy the songs that strayed into electric like I want to see the bright lights. A bit too trad folk for me overall

My Mum loves Richard Thompson's voice. Me, I don't get it. I like Linda's though. This was a perfectly fine folk album but I have little to say about it, either positive or negative. Would have been a 2.5, but I can't stretch to 3, so: 2/5

A little to slow for me. The only song I really liked was the title song to the album.

I mostly didn't enjoy it, but it had a few nice moments, The Great Valerio was a highlight

Started out really strong, but then tapered off.

Fine, a little slow and boring, not important or influential or anything else. There’s just so much else I’d rather listen to.

some of the instrumentation brought an interesting edge to what I expect out of folk music, but I found the singing to be pretty rough for the most part. I don’t see the magic in this one. standouts: The Cavalry Cross • I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight

boring

Спиздили knocking on heavens door у дилана

I’ve never heard of Richard and Linda Thompson before, but this album cover certainly is intriguing. I see that this album is listed as folk, which I never would have guessed, based on the aforementioned cover. The folk albums that I’ve reviewed so far have been a pretty mixed bag for me, and I see that Richard here was in Fairport Convention, whose two albums each earned three stars from me. I’m not expecting to be wowed by this album, but some of the reviews I’m reading are giving me hope! I hope I can see some bright lights tonight too. Despite a really strong start from this album, I wasn’t really impressed by it. “When I Get To The Border” and “The Calvary Cross” were both really great songs, but after that initial stretch, I thought this album was pretty bland, and that it didn’t offer anything unique. Yes, the songs were fine, and nothing on here was unlistenable, but I wasn’t really intrigued by the arrangements or the lyrics. I thought the vocals were consistently above average throughout this album (Linda’s singing at times reminded me of Natalie Merchant, which I mean as a compliment), but I can honestly say that about hundreds of albums I’ve reviewed. What hooked me on the first two songs was the unique blend of country and folk rock, but that sound seemed to be abandoned after those first two songs, which I was really bummed by. On the bright side though, those two songs show that Richard and Linda are very capable songwriters and musicians. The title track was pretty good as well, and seemed to shift back closer to a country-infused sound, but I wished that the horns had been more prominent. This album may be influential, but I found that it just really wasn’t my speed.

Hokey yokel music

Kind of celtic-y folk country.

This record didn’t seem to have a timeless or special artistic quality that warrants a top 1,001 album.

Acoustic guitary duet. Pleasant but not particularly interesting to me.

Yeah this is not for me.

To me, this is folk music with a bit more of an edge. Her voice is more pleasant to me than his. It’s ok to me.

Album review 013 I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight by Richard and Linda Thompson (1974) Rating 2/5 It’s been a long time since I last listened to this album and despite regular appearances on best ever lists, I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight has never clicked for me. Two songs into this most recent listen I thought “yeah, this actually may be an album that I might really grow to like”. By track 11, I realised I was wrong - folk rock just isn’t a type of music I enjoy (although there are a couple of notable exceptions which we’ll get to over the next 1,000 or so reviews). It’s a perfectly ok record, but not one I think I’ll ever appreciate.

Storytelling/Singer/Songwriter - mostly just boring. Some of the storytelling was nice like the title song but it was just kind of eh

Not particularly remarkable to me

Not the worst thing I've ever heard but didn't grab me

Meh. A little boring, honestly. My husband and wife team were alternating singing duties and her songs were better but still nothing to get excited about

For someone who likes First Aid Kit, this shouldn’t be too hard of a sell. But for me this just isn’t particularly interesting. Linda sings well, but I’m not sold on her husbands singing. The songs also lacks hooks in my opninion. Just generic strumming and uninspiring chord progressions. Feels like quite generic folk/country.

Never heard of album or singer. First song, Extremly British. Very 70s as well. Fun song I guess. Very Irish too with the flutes. Not my style. Calvary cross is MUCH better. Love the production. Withered and died is fine to borderline bad. All I have to say abt that. I want to see the bright lights is much better. Love the horn/guitar work. And good songwriting. Beatles vibes. “Drunkards” is good, fine music and songwriting but I like the harmonizing a lot. Good guitar solo too. Not a fan of hallelujah, did not last the test of time. Friend for me is fine nothing special. Little beggar girl is catchy at least, but again just too old. Father Time beat the shit out of Thsi album. End of the rainbow is mid. The great Valerie is probably the best song in the album, but still just good at best. This album as a whole was fine to not good. Worst I’ve listened to so far. 1.8 stars

Nope. Didn’t do it for me at all. Nope.

I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight // 2.5/5

Rough start but I thought I could get into it. However, by about halfway I was internally screaming “shut up! shut up!” at every song.

семейная идиллия, хоть и скучная

Nothing too offensive, just found it rather dull.

This definitely isn't my thing. I dislike the parts that were more celtic or country sounding a lot. The folky parts were ok.

Ami folkrock 1974

Serial shagger and put upon wife. What a combination. You can see how the songs pan out. Linda's voice is interesting for a few minutes but Richards is a hard listen. It is a worthwhile endeavour though as you can find decent songs if you are willing to make the effort. Best thing about the album is the excellent cover art.

Un peu répétitif, pas rentre dans les paroles, et la folk c'est pas trop mon delire

Not my style of music. ★★

I enjoy the variety of instruments, and there's a few really good songs on here, but this mostly didn't really do anything for me at all. Great guitar playing though

Не має якихось претензій до музики чи виконань, але не відгукується взагалі.

сорі, я люблю фолк, але конкретно це тематично мені здалось нецікавим. можливо я звикла до чогось більш казкового в цьому жанрі....

Some type of folk record with a mix of fairly interesting and quite boring tunes. Glad I heard it. Will never listen to it again

I liked a few songs but idk if I will listen to any again. Easy listening but kinda monotonous at some points. 4.5/10

1974 I'm open to a bit of folk, and I'd not heard this before. It's OK, but I won't be revisiting, Bland and in places and a bit too much sky fairy references for my liking. The album cover is shit. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ mostly Revisit ❌️ ★★☆☆☆ (4/10)

I did not like this 2

Some beautiful parts, but mainly boring

I do appriciate the instumentation here and each backing track is quite wonderful. Only issue is that the vocals leave so much to be desired. Proof that lyrics and vocal ability really do matter

The musical equivalent of 'Nuts in May'. I enjoyed the chord structure in 'The Calvary Cross'.

Oh, sweet. This album. "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" is a great name for an album, though I've no clue what sound that name would encompass. A live album? Big band? Guess I just need to crack this one open. Yeah, I should have expected something folky. This isn't bad, though I'm not much in the way of a folkehead. Linda's a pleasing vocalist, I like the intimacy of the husband/wife dynamic and the gaelic/medieval influence is quite interesting. There just isn't much about this which holds my attention in the long run "Withered and Died" is pretty good - I appreciate the mock-country sound. The title track has some nice punchy guitars and I like the musical embellishments, particularly the band segment and the trumpets during the chorus. "The Little Beggar Girl" is a fun jig. The lyrics are pretty good, and I enjoy the sweet accordion solo from midway through the track. Book time. There's a whole lot of nothing in this entry, though Wikipedia reveals that this album has been warmly received by critics in the years since release. I can cosign this inclusion. It's pretty unique for a folk album and appears to have a solid critic backing.

It's fine.

I didn't enjoy the voices in tandem, which is quite the issue for a duet. 2.

Not a genre of music I would gravitate to

It's Ok. Not something I would listen to normally. I do find it to be better than most folk I've listened to, but the woman singer leans into some classic folk tones and it sounds performative more than authentic. The guitars are decent and that's what raises it above common folk boredom. Not much that's bad or annoying, but nothing to grab me either. Did really like the guitar bit at the beginning of Calvary Cross, though. The least folk-y, best song is probably the title track. Prolly wouldn't listen to it again.

Correcto

It wasn't horrible and I suppose that any list of 1001 anythings you need to do before you die needs to have a number 764.

det här var väl inget vidare kul? 2 slow 2 rock and roll

Just overall kinda boring

Kinda country, not the worst, but I was certainly bored by the end of it all. High 2? Idk it wasn't bad

A bit too folky for my taste. Decided to give it away. I really only like the first two tracks.

Extra star for Buck Owens cover.

So boring, musically. It sounds as though Richard was a humorless man with a taste for Quaaludes and decided to write an album of children’s music.

#659. This doesn't really do it for me. It started off fine, but the longer it went on, the more I just wanted it to be over faster. 2/5: meh

Folksy and fun

Another blinder album let's go. If I had to describe this album in one phrase it would be easy listening, with an good mixture folk and blues influences, whether it bluesy licks backed with brass on the albums title track or the organ matched with acoustic chords and licks in the albums opening track, some tracks even implementing an almost eastern European/Asian sound them noticeable on The Calvert Cross. Both Richard and Linda's vocal and lyrical world stay consistent throughout the album, especially the use of choir like backing vocals throughout the album. Overall it ticks all the boxes for a fun, easy going album, probably something I'd pick up again. 2.5/5 MTW I love any kind of folk related music, so I feel a bit disappointed that I’ve never listened to this in full. I knew the title track going into this but that about it, and now that I’ve sat on the album, I think it’s good. Linda Thompsons voice is outstanding all the way through this album, the way she changes her voice throughout it’s outstanding going from almost a McCartney like tone in the title track, so a more somber, Nico like drone in some of the quieter songs. Dynamically, it’s pretty basic, there’s good brass instrumentation and solid guitar playing. This is a good album, but that’s it really, and there’s no issue with that. I’d definitely listen to this again, but it sadly doesn’t have the same vocal power as a Crosby, Stills & Nash piece, or a Joni Mitchell. It’s absolutely fine. 3.2/5 FTW Sorry for no in-depth review for this one. Was a big part of my childhood but not one I've listened to much in my adult life so was nice to revisit. JF 3/5

Really good but it didn’t grab me

I don’t think I like Linda’s voice very much

I think the most interesting thing I’ve learned about my musical taste in going through this list is that I really can’t stand folk music. Not Dylan, certainly not Joni Mitchell, and the English permutations of it from the various members of Fairport Convention leave me cold. I can appreciate that Richard and Linda Thompson have talent, but this is just not for me. At best, it’s forgettable background music. 2.5⭐️

this was okay, maybe slightly boring in parts but it was okay if you’re after 70’s easy listening on a sunday morning

J - 2/5 Best Track - "I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight" F - DNL

It's as Ann as the nose on Plain's face.

A couple of good spots that are overshadowed by some pretty dull soft rock. I wanted to like this more than I did.

Oh I know the story behind Richard and Linda, yada yada. But I don’t know this feels like a critic’s darling situation to me. I’ve just never been able to get hold of whatever was been sold.

Nice enough jangle heavy folk. Not very memorable though.

It’s ok but I thought folk was dead by ‘74

I didn’t think it was terrible.

Yeah not too bad

Not my type of thing

Not as bad as I expected. When I saw husband and wife fold duo from the 70s I feared the worst. But it wasn't the worst. Maybe the UK slant made it a bit more palatable. The Bob Dylan influence was strong.

Didn't click with me. I did hear some talent but it didn't move the needle for me. Not my favourite genre either.

Unfortunately this started out very much at the Hey Nonny Nonny end of folk. Which immediately makes my ears roll. The sound is very good - feels like it could have been made 20 years after it was. But the songs are of a style that I just can't get into.

I’m starting to get the feeling folk isn’t for me cause this was a slog I was excited after the first song thinking this will it then it developed into the same snooze fest. The live songs at the end were great though so I don’t know what’s going on with me and folk

2.2 realy boring

Vapid.

Okay album. Americana in some spots, definitely hear Celtic influences in a few others. Interesting listen.

Mix of singer/songwriter and Irish ballads. But there also a dash of pop in there too. Anyway it’s a bit of an odd confection. There was one song I really loved. But the rest was fairly forgettable to me. 2.5/5

It was only fine.

Too folkish for me, its very difficult to judge something that doesn't move you. Am I not understanding it? Am I spoiled with current modern music and am unable to see the value of the roots of folk? Stuck between a 2 and 3 for me, I'd rate a +2 since its better than other albums I've rated flat 2s at.

The album starts with three great songs that really give you a clear sense of what kind of music is on the rest of the album cause like most country albums this album has almost no variety in sounds. Which is always a big problem for me personally, as well as the songs just being slow which I always struggle with. But the craftsmanship that went into this album is very evident and I honestly had a lot of love for the title track. Oh and I almost forgot, I think this was very eye opening for me, I didn’t like the production on the album. It’s way way way too clean for this music. That’s just a personal opinion obviously but I realized it when I got to the end of the album. There are three live recordings. One for a song that must have been a hit or a cover cause it’s not on the album, and two songs from the album. And those two songs are infinitely better live. While it’s a super clean and sharp live recording, you really hear how this music (country in general honestly) only works live. I don’t think I ever would’ve liked or come around to country if it weren’t for hearing country music live. It still pales in comparison to almost all other music, but I think live country has a little charm that you can only get live and it obviously exposes those who are not really gifted musically. But with my country music rant aside, the middle of this album, all the songs between the first three and the last three is not for me. It felt meandering and boring, edgeless. Honestly had this just been a short EP with the live tracks as the b-sides this could’ve been a near 5, not a perfect five but a strong 4.

It's....fine? for folk rock i guess.

Not quite my tempo. 3/10

2.5 The title track was a standout.

⭐️⭐️ It’s fine… starts strong but dies off real quick. Probably won’t ever listen again.

The dynamic between the woman and the man singing was nice, however what a dull album. Seriously, it was just so average and nothing special at all. No hate, but that was not worthy of this list.

In a nutshell: a little bit rock, a little bit folk. It’s definitely of it’s time. Think acoustic Pogues. The harmonies are good. The spirit of traditional British folk (ie Celtic folk) is live and well here without sounding too cheesy. Not for me, but I think it’s one of those albums that was culturally important in the UK. Overall: 4/10

This should be called "Music for Hobbits". 2/5.

Hmmm, nothing special.

Mid folk

Sounds great, but already forgotten!

hmmmm not very excited about this album the song that had the most listens was okay. 2 stars.

Very forgettable folk

The feel of these folky records are immaculate but i always feel like the tracks melt together

Not for me. There's some bits that grabbed the attention a little but I've no desire to hear any of it again and I need to get harsher on this stuff

alright, not my thing

This isn’t it. The Little Beggar Girl is pretty funny tho

The singer has a distinct type of British accent that I feel like I don't hear very often in music. Cool intro for The Calvary Cross. Like that eastern sounding scale and am a sucker for tremolo guitar. The title track so far is pretty cool and I could see it being a hit today in certain indie scenes. Though maybe without the (mellotron?) horn? I don't dislike the horn but it makes it feel a bit more of its time and not contemporary. Which is fair since it isn't a modern tune.

Not really interesting in any way...

Just a really boring album that does not deserve to be in this list. It's fine, but to say it is essential to hear is absurd.

So, I'll be doing beef related reviews. So far in the first track, it feels like sirloin steak that's cooked a bit medium. I'm having a bit of a hard time chewing on it. Probably wouldn't listen again unless I was stoned and hanging out with my Scottish friend who eats haggis. 2nd track is actually not bad in the intro.... I thought I was going to be enthralled after a bit, but I nearly fell asleep. HALP. Give me a bit more beef next time please. 3rd track - NOPE. BPM is like 10… I want to see the bright lights tonight - actually not bad, this is giving 70/30 cheap ground beef vibes, but they fucked the cook up a little bit...but not too much…sorta like Diet Fleetwood Mac 5th track. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Zzzzzz Zzz z Oh shit it’s the last song. well this one is actually not bad....zzzzzzzz Oh boy that was tough to get through. I nearly passed out during every song because it kept getting slower and slower. LINDA WHY'D YOU MAKE RICHARD SELL? 3.5/10 -- On the beef scale (Eye of Round)

oh im only a POOR LITTLE BEGGAR GIRL!!! another 2.5 w the caveat that the eagles should have been a 2. Just don't really have any desire to go back to this, even though I didn't hate it

It did not resonate with me, I'd need more listen sessions with lyrics to get it, but probably won't do that. 4/10

I hated this for the most part. Really pulling for Richard to get out of this situation. It's not worth it Richard, it never is. Some good moments for sure, but overall it doesn't really take me anywhere. It is an album about male opression afterall, so I guess that's the point. At least all the instruments are real. 2.5 out of 5

not beating the allegations that the editors ran out of albums and were scrambling to hit 1001 with this one. perfectly serviceable 70s folk rock, if you're into that. some of these songs are depressing as hell. +1 for the fun medieval horn, -1 for including a christmas song.

Afraid it didn't do much of anything for me, but it's probably a skill issue. Loved the electric guitar when it had a chance, and the bass playing as well, but most everything else fell flat for me. Nice pleasant listen but overall not impactful, again probably my bad. I should pay more attention to lyrics, BUT the instrumentation didn't reach out to me. 3/10

Not bad but not for me

Acoustic-focused music is just not my thing at all. This sounds so maudlin to me. I can't even seem to enjoy it as background music.

“Grrr... Now when I say "hello, Mr. Thompson" and press down on your foot, you smile and nod.” 😑 “No problem.”🫡 “Hello, Mr. Thompson.”😉 “I think he's talking to you.” 🤔 I guess it is a fine album if you like folk music, but I don’t. Might have been a little better if there were more songs like Little Begger Girl that had some pep to them, but this one was a real snooze fest. Someone get the Thompsons a coffee pot or a baggie of coke.

I want to see the end of this torture

It's all right. Not my style

Not for me

Folk que fica realmente agradável pelo vocal feminino.

Found it a bit dreary and boring tbh. Some were quite pretty Recognised one but mostly unmoved

I mean it’s music. I felt it started stronger than it ended and I saved the titular track and Down where the Drunkards Roll to see if they grow on me. I felt like those two had some legs. It’s within my style, and I would generally prefer it over silence lol that’s harsh but it’s just not reaching me all that much. Even though I think they’ve put some energy and passion into it it just doesn’t resonate with me the way I would want it to. Glad I listened once, won’t be listening a second time.

This sounds like the kind of music Jenny from Forrest Gump wanted to play. I kinda liked the folksy vibe at the start but by the end I kinda hated it.

The decade jump from 60s to 70s British Folk is much appreciated, but I'm starting to think I'll always be more of a fan of good ol' backwoods Appalachian Folk. Not bad, and maybe I'll give this another chance when I'm not listening to it mostly stuck in traffic, but really wasn't my speed.

I don't know if its a good sign when the Wikipedia articles main takeaway from the album is that it was not commercially successful, nor was it critically successful either. This would be a 3 star album for me if it was only Linda singing. I'm sorry Richard, but you bring this down to 2 stars.

I'm so sick of folk music at this point.

Prefer a lindisfarne style of folk, cam appreciate the guitar and songwriting just can get away with the vocals

70’s ballady ick

i have found folk music that speaks to me but this just doesn't do anything for me

I had to re listen to it because I was not paying attention the first time. 2l listen was ok but I still felt bored. I did like the bright lights song, had the most energy

I like 60's and 70's folk but this one is unbearable. It sounds too much like Irish-scented folk. As someone with a strong dislike for Irish folk music, this album is a tough listen.

The title track is the only real highlight here. While Richard Thompson is clearly a master guitarist, the folky songs are just too downbeat for any other parts to shine through. The trade-off of vocal duties between Linda and Richard does little to provide any variety to the album.

Jag gillade hennes röst, inte hans så mycket. Känns som tidig singer/songwriter men ingen låt fångade mig

Never really got Richard Thompson

Not my bag

feels very filler-y

Bit boring

mid album tbh. Didn't catch that folk wave at all

Not something I would normally listen to. Not sure how this is a 1001 album personally.

I found this pretty boring; not a huge singer-songwriter fan in general.

The definition of ok

Nice folk music, This album has some great songs on it and some not so great songs. Its a real mixed bag. I really enjoyed the end of the rainbow and when I get to the boarder Then there were songs that I just could not get on with like the great valerio and the little beggar girl. Favourite song: The end of the rainbow Least favourite: the little beggar girl. It could have easily featured in Robin Hood the Disney cartoon. Album artwork: Simple and effective cover

The lowest bpm I heard in a while. So mellow and low it actively makes me less productive and lazy.

A rather miserable affair, if you don’t like folk

The title track is great, but the rest isn’t great. I really do not like the sound of Richard’s voice. Linda’s songs are a little better, but it’s mostly mid.

This album interested me so much that I started doing a required training for work in the middle of listening to it instead

Compared to what I’ve had in the past week this album was calming and a good break. However based on itself, the singers approaches aren’t my style and it was just mid. I liked the last song and it’s guitaring but nothing else stood out.

I didn’t hate it (even if they did have a Buck Owen’s cover) but I would have no reason to ever intentionally listen to this again. 2.3

Que se yo, no es muy para mi esto.

Didn't like it. All folk and country is the same. I am not a fan of this genre

I’ve never been big on the 70’s British folk revival, which is funny because one of my favorite bands was heavily influenced by it. I just find a lot of it to be dull. I don’t like most folk music when it’s just one person and a guitar. There are exceptions, but for the most part I like more dynamic music. Even just a guitar and multiple people harmonizing is enough to pique my interest. This album was mostly the type of folk I don’t care for. Just one person singing and a guitar playing. There were some songs that were a little more interesting, but still not my favorite. I’ll say the album opener was the high point and it was all downhill after that.

Couldn't listen more than once. This is my least favorite type of country music. Rhythm of the chords and the singing style were both not my thing. Perhaps it's a gem for fans of country, but this one wasn't for me. 2/5.

Couldn't find any joy here.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to get your heart rate up more than 2bpm while listening to this album. It’s pretty enough sounding, but what a snooze fest.

Folksy but not in a good way. I liked his voice and not so much hers and I found the balladry quite unconvincing and bland.

This is nice, but it’s a bit slow. Title track has a bit of life to it. But the rest of this just really isn’t for me. Feels like this would be good for drinking alone on the moors. Very pretty, but I can’t wait for it to end.

This album had a slight Irish feel to it which was fun

Sounded vaguely Irish folky? Fine but not super memorable.

Folk rock bastante moñas. Un 2.

Found this a bit boring

Always something unsettling about British artists doing country music. This wasn't terrible, just creepy. 1.5*

Country/Folk album that through its inclusion in the list makes me question my sanity. Again. 2/5

Not the worst folk music I've heard but still folk music

Wasn’t vibing to this too hard. But not terrible 2**

yawn% 0:53 [WR] Seriously, this guy's vocals are yawn-inducing. Maybe my brain thinks he's yawning while singing, it doesn't happen with female vocals. With the sleepy instrumentals on top of it it's kinda hard to stay focused Last song was good I think

Mostly depressing folk. Wouldn't listen again.

His voice sounds like the stereotypical voice that people do when taking the piss out of folk singers, with their finger in their ear. Some decent songs on this, but also some dire ones (e.g. Beggar Girl). Overall not really my thing.

This isn't my speed, but it's good \"fun time\" music. This would play over a montage.

Hm. Well.

Boring.

Sunday School music

I liked a few songs on this album, and while the genre-shifting was perhaps interesting, but as a singular work I wasn't terrible interested. The Calvary Cross instrumentation was hauntingly good though, so for that track alone I'm thoroughly glad that this album was recommended.

I enjoyed listening to this album, but I doubt that I will ever think to listen to it again.

Makes sense that they came from Fairport Convention. This is nice, but it’s a bit slow. Title track has a bit of life to it. But the rest of this just really isn’t for me. Feels like this would be good for drinking alone on the moors. Very pretty, but I can’t wait for it to end.

No, no, no.

Sounds old. Not in a good way. A few good tracks but not a great overall listen

Loved the calvary cross, others were fun but didn't save any other singles

The artist seems to have had a very good stereo microphone, talent on their instruments, and a crippling fear of making their audience feel anything.

This is boring. I'm not actively repelled by it, but there is precisely zero danger of this being added into my rotation.

Not really my thing. 🤷‍♂️

Not a bad album, but a pretty boring one that failed to grab my attention outside of a decent opening stretch. Not a fan of their vocals. Unopposed but unimpressed. Best song: The Calvary Cross

The title track's the only one that really caught my ear. 2.5 stars.

I know they were leaders in the British neo-folk movement in the 70s, and generally I'm a huge fan of just about anything folk-oriented, but I found this a rather bland listen. On the other hand, I still love listening to Fairport Convention, and pretty much anything sung by Sandy Denny, so maybe Linda just loses by (subconscious) comparison. Nice, just. Different time/place I might think more of it....

More boring than I was expecting. A little too folky, and Richard doesn't sing nearly as well as Linda. Very forgettable.

I get a little tired of the 60s/70s folk. Especially in the 70s when it started to lean really heavily into country. Thie record is simple and unremarkable. For a fairly short album it was kind of a slog. I might have skipped a song or two after a couple minutes. I don't know what else to say. 2/5

Noh folk ei oo lempparigenreni, mutta kyllä tän jaksoi kuunnella alusta loppuun mukisematta! Varmaan kun kuuntelis sanat tarkemmin niin nousis viel pykälän asteikolla. 2/5

Really couldn’t get into this one. The vocals and lyrics were uninspired, the folk was tarnished by the brass/band. Not a fan

folk is not my thing but a couple of really nice songs

I liked a few songs, the rest was not my vibe

I am not much of a folk person, so I found this pretty boring, like I do a lot of folk music. The title track is not bad though.

Laconic, glittering, and sad - like maple syrup made from the tears of young children.

Country Nicht meins, ist aber auch nicht schlecht.

Country folk influenced could be ok in a pub after a few pints.

little bit boring...

One ok song otherwise it sounds whinny.

Du folk légèrement country relax tranquille par un couple. Pas mauvais, mais pas mon style. Meilleur que Buck Owens, mais on n'atteint quand même pas un 3 pour moi.

Really disliked. Stylistically and lyrically it was a bummer. This is not one I will revisit.

mostly agreeable listen

uhh 2.5? I was able to fully ignore this while working on something else, which is better than Made in Japan.

Blander than a boloney sandwich at a baseball game, but I'll give it 2 fax machines for the decent production. 📠📠

Alku lupaili parempaa, ei toimittanut. Hajuton harmiton himoton.

Basic stuff

Not my thing.

Nothing too standout for me. Music is good, not my style. Will I listen to again: 0%

Bonus points for hurdy gurdy. Everything - a hard pass. I don't have any spare change.

Nothing exciting or altogether interesting here. Too folksy for my tastes.

I was really excited to give this a 3 after hearing "The Calvary Cross". But I was tricked--deceived--beguiled--bamboozled, for alas, it be short the Anglo-spunk I thirst for while I slowly wither in Western Massachusetts.

2.5/5. Just not really a fan of folky music, although I can appreciate it a little.

Boring but relatively inoffensive.
