Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Very nice. Starting to stretch their legs.
Was really getting the Bowie vibes on this one, and to be honest, didn’t really give this the serious listen it deserves. Listened twice all the way through, but had other things going on. Will perhaps go back and listen again later as nothing really grabbed me except for The Killing Moon. Third listen getting better. 3.5 could go either way
Good album by a slightly underrated band. Favorite tracks so far: Thorn of Crowns, Killing Moon and My Kingdom.
I had never heard this band before (heard of, but not heard). I enjoyed the album - seemed to be like U2 with lots of odd sounds added in (which I enjoyed). It wasn't sticking with me in terms of being memorable but I'd definitely listen again and check out their other albums. I'd say 3.5 rounded up to a 4.
Fairly solid background music. Very 80s.
Almost perfect. Would def go back for more listens. Some amazing gems hidden between the hits.
I was pleasantly surprised that I recognized a song from Inglorious Basterds. Very 70's/80's vibe for sure.
Sort of a more superficially optimistic The Cure… vocalist sounds incredibly familiar, although I’ve never *consciously* listened to the Bunnymen before. I’ve probably heard a song but didn’t know it was them. Or some other vocalist sounding like him. I like this. It’s easy to listen to, while still being interesting.
The Killing Moon is unfuckwithable.
I like the killing moon and most of the songs are enjoyable. Crown of thorns is weird af..
Ok. saved the famous one
Pretty catchy but ain't a fan of thorn of crowns
Listened 12.05.21
Simple, easy listen. Funny enough I heard the title track played on the episode of Good Girls I watched the same day. Strange coincidence.
Loved the songs on this album. It is one of the best albums compared to the ones I have listened to on this list.
Found the Killing Moon after going a bit into Bunnymen's discography following Crocodiles and immediately liked it. Felt the same after listening to this album, very nice flow and makes me feel like I'm on that album cover with them. A very good album Already Saved: The Killing Moon Saved After Listening: Silver, Seven Seas
Saved Prior: The Killing Moon Off Rip: Silver, Nocturnal Me, Crystal Days, The Yo Yo Man, Seven Seas, My Kingdom, Ocean Rain Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: One of those albums where I like damn near every song on the album, but nothing floors me. I love the mellow atmosphere of this album and the production was much better than the other Echo album in here. The Killing Moon is one of my favorite songs ever too, but there wasn't enough here to push this into 5 territory. Just a thoroughly good, sometimes great album.
Pretty good -- thought it sounded like the artist from the Donny Darko song (because it is!).
New wave/post-punk. 7/10, John Peel was right about this one.
Kind of liking this! I did not know they were the ones who did "The Killing Moon" but I really like that song. I like the unstable, on-the-edge feel they have going on in some of the songs. Solid!
Pretty nice without being anything super special
!!prettttyttyy!! kinda timeless, really talented and catchy. I liked when he said c c c c c c c c cucumber🥒
Killing moon man
Wasn't feeling it at the beginning, but it grew on me
4
Pleasant listening music but nothing I'd get excited for.
i loveeee killer moon
Nice 80s alternative rock album. Nothing too crazy but some good depeshe mode vibes
This is tough. i lack the capacity and context to judge this one with total fairness. I hear the greatness, I really do. But I can't say I connected with it completely on first listen. It's all there, "The Killing Moon" is a condensed example of how these guys know how to write a pop-leaning song. It's a classic. I can't say a single bad thing about it, but it doesn't hit home for me. 850ish albums in, this may be a symptom of post-punk fatigue. 3/5 nothing against it
Found this album to be kind of boring. Another 80's post punk/new wave offering for the list. At least I recognized a couple of songs. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again
Playlist pick : My Kingdom
I went into this album only knowing The Killing Moon, and I came out a little disappointed. Not sure what I expected. It's an 80s pop album with some interesting ideas. The vegetable song was weird.
Rating: 6/10 I was never into these guys weirdly enough. This is their big one and to me if this is the best they get then I kinda just Echo as some fairly decent jangly post-punk. This one is more ambitious and probably a fair bit better than their debut but I guess have them down for the same score. The B side is pretty solidly better and to be honest The Killing Moon is far and away the best song here. Adding that one especially but this could certainly grow on me
2.5 It's my fault I expected more but at least The Killing Moon slays
No está mal pero not 4 me
3 I started liking it more towards the end, but overall didn't really do it for me. Seemed like the vocals were mixed too high compared to the instrumentation maybe
Well so far it's q very British and very cool album. Colorful Post punk that really moves well from song to song. Good balance between bangers and ballads. It will get a very decent 3
14 year old wannabe goth me would have loved this album, but the adult me isn’t too sure. The killing moon remains a classic, but I feel the rest didn’t quite drum up enough emotion for me.
This has the distinctive sound of being of its time. Outside of the Killing Moon I wasn’t familiar with any of the rest, but overall a pretty pleasant listen
It's a nice new wave album, but nothing special in particular. Didn't really stand out to me in any aspect or whatsoever. Dreamy atmosphere is what I liked the best, maybe after a few more listens I could appreciate this album more than I do now. For now, it earns a solid 3/5 from me. Favorites: Nocturnal Me, Crystal Days, The Killing Moon, Seven Seas
So 80’s
80’s English pop punk
Day884 - it gave us the killing moon so that boosts the whole album
First time listening to this particular record despite listening to "Crocodiles" and "Porcupines" many times over a few years ago. I much prefer their earlier, guitar-centric brand of post-punk compared this; just not totally into this band's particular useage of string arrangements. 6/10.
Very solid. Would listen again, and probably need to listen again.
1. Silver – 3.0 2. Nocturnal Me – 2.5 3. Crystal Days – 2.5 4. The Yo Yo Man – 2.5 5. Thorn of Crowns – 2.5 6. The Killing Moon – 2.5 7. Seven Seas – 2.5 8. My Kingdom – 2.5 9. Ocean Rain – 2.5
Starts off a little different from the sound of the other album I had from these guys on this list. Not bad, just different. I have no idea what these guys are about at this point. Maybe that's the point. I still don't know what post punk is. Anyway, 3/5. Not bad.
Killing moon is a full star itself
Decent record Killing Moon obviously stand out track. However a lot a synth filled fun. His voice was great on this and lots a whirling guitar.
In my last review of an EaTB album I gave a 4. Not really into them much and their sound is sometimes too U2 for my taste. The last album I was able to pick out some elements from The Cure, but not in this one. Didn't get much from this one, won't be going back to it.
Eh it’s fine
Very 80s with a lead singer very reminiscent of a lot of others from that era.
Poetical and heavy feeling. Wish it would have been more musically diverse and experimental, feels contained and not so interesting
Good album
Opens very strong but gets a little less catchy by the end.
I was so hoping that I'd be able to post a 5☆ review for this album. A lot of my old school friends were big Echo and the Bunnymen fans back in the day, and I just sort of tolerated them and liked the odd song. 40 years later however, I haven't changed that much. Killing Moon and Seven Seas are both good songs, Silver and Crystal Days are pretty decent, as are My Kingdom and Angels and Devils, but there's nothing that I can pin a gold star on and say "That's the reason why this album is in this list!" It turned out a bit disappointing. A low 3 stars.
Felt the first half was maybe a bit too much art rather than composition. The second half was good though, heard elements of the cure
Mmm, they’re fine. They try really hard to move me, but they’ve never cracked the Cure level. Ian McCulloch has a grand baritone, and there are several legit hits in their catalog. It’s just that the non-hits don’t land at all. No resonance. McCulloch described Ocean Rain as “the greatest album ever made.” It isn’t. Echo and the Bunnymen (what are we, a children’s book?) sound like a copycat band, a pretend band, a band that makes you wish you were listening to a different band. A better band. This isn’t hate I’m broadcasting here. It’s indifference.
Not too memorable but giving off The Smiths and Nick Cave vibes. Vocals do seem to pop out and doesn't quite gel with the music. 3/5
Wasn't bad but nothing memorable
I love The Killing Moon because of Donnie Darko but forgot about the rest
This is a fine album overall. Some tracks just don’t really do much for me, and while “The Killing Moon” is an obvious standout, I never fully connected with the rest of the album in the same way.
No private session used for Spotify. I like this album, the orchestration added a lot to Echo's(i guess) voice, and I like the guitar. Side note: I like Pavement's cover of "Killing Moon", but I didn't know where the whole "cu cu cucumber cabbage came from", decades later, I do.
Ok.
3.3/5 killing moon 5/5 song
Fine. It grew on me a little as it went. It’s kind of standard 80s new wave. The singer has a pretty good voice though, so that’s a plus.
solid
Was feeling a little underwhelmed after my first listen of this. So i decided to give it another spin. It was much better the second time around. The first couple of songs don’t really do it for me. When the album reaches The Yo Yo Man, my enjoyment of it increases greatly and I loved the second half
REM did it better. 3.5
Second Bunnymen album here. I think I preferred this one out of the two though. Nothing amazing about it, but solid in all departments and had a nice 80’s feel to it. Wouldn’t revisit, but wasn’t terrible.
The Killing Moon is just an amazing song that really takes me back to high school. But over all, the album is not my favorite. Again, rounding up.
I have enjoyed some of Echo and the boys - nothing too great on here.
This is more like a 2.5 for me; I generally don't like this sort of 80's new wave sort of thing, but this one was OK. It was weirdly just kind of non-descript. I actually went back and listened to it again because it didn't really stick with me at all on first listen.
This feels like generic pub music to me, maybe with an 80s twist on it.
Alveg smá áhugavert, sérstaklega fyrir 1984. Nútímalegt sánd.
influential, classical, killing moon is ace, otherwise
Not what I was expecting. Not terrible, not great. Right in the middle for me.
OK
Starts off with good energy with "Silver" and gets a little odd from there. I didn't get "The Yo Yo Man" or "Thorn of Crowns." I did enjoy "The Killing Moon" and would like to know the story behind the video. "Ocean Rain" is kind of a downer to close things. Interesting to hear the orchestra in the background.
Great
The killing moon really does pop off the album in a wonderful way. The other tracks aren’t half bad either
This was kind of uneven for me. I liked the non-orchestral numbers better.
One of the better records I've heard from the post punk genre, a high 3.
Decent
Quite generic. 6/10
Liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Felt a lot of personality in this album. Didn't care for crocodiles earlier in the experience, but this is much better - 7/10
3,5
Great
weird and dark, there are a few stand out moments i love when they go unga unga dont think this will end on my rotation but a fun listen
This is the first Echo album that I have listened to fully. I read some of the wikipedia which says that this got mixed reviews upon release, and if thats true, I cant wait to hear the other albums. I thought this was very good. Maybe a little self-indulgent, or a popular band on their 4th record. Most of the songs were good pop bangers accentuated with orchestral parts. Some songs were a little cringy, I'm thinking mostly of Nocturnal Me, but maybe that's what they were going for as proto-edgelord gothy 80s types. All in all, I enjoyed the listen.
I’ve never been a huge Echo fan. This album was ok, not great and I would not go out of my way to listen to it again.
This was fine. They sounded pleasant enough, lyrics were kinda just throwaways for the most part. Nothing really felt special or revolutionary with this.
would be pretty easy to dismiss this as The Killing Moon and eight other songs, and like.....it's easy because it's true. but i just can't bring myself to not enjoy this kind of jangly, gothy proto-indie. just my kind of thing, man
I'm sure it's cliche but man The Killing Moon is a great song.
Hyvää alt rokkia tai mitä post punkkia onkaan. Vähän erilaista folk ja teatraalis viboilla. Vähän tulwe R.E.M mieleen. Parhaat: Nocturnal Me, The Killing Moon, Seven Seas
Bastante bueno, música de los 80, estandar. Nada de que quejarme.
A good album but not as good as Porcupine.
Forgettable but I can see how people would like it
I like the orchestral addition and The Killing Moon is a classic. 3/5.
Mysterious. Just sounds like the 80s but more artsy. Not much stood out to me except for the lyrics, which were pretty psychedelic.
Good. "The Killing Moon" is one of the best songs of the decade imo. Some good depth here shows it wasn't a one-off for the band at that time.
actually really good
Haway, this is far too much echo and the bunnymen for this list, we need one album at most. Don't really have anything to say about this that i didn't say for the first one. It straddles 80s pop and 80s indie, though more of the former than the latter. I don't mind the mix but hard to pick any parts that really stood out. Wouldn't go back i think, serves me right for saying id need to hear more to make an opinion after the first album. I've made my opinion now, 2.5, don't need any more.
I want to start by talking about how "Nocturnal Me" got me wondering for the whole day where did I listen to that song before. Turns out, it was apparently used as an ending for an episode of the "Stranger Things" series. I've never saw it, but my sister was a hardcore fanatic of the franchise, so it had to be that. Anecdotes aside, this is a great post-punk / goth / jangle pop that makes a great use of a string orchestra to create some beautiful and epic passages. Another thing that stands out is the combination of both the happy sound of the jangle pop and the more moody side of goth. For example, the opener "Silver" starts with a very uplifting melodies and passionate voice, while the next track, "Nocturnal Me" fits incredibly well the more moody and cold sound of the goth music. I have to say that I don't think this album has the strongest or most memorable material from these styles, but it is still a very pleasant experience and sounds quite well.
Cool but not bangin
Lovely. Holds up pretty well across the board.
This is second Echo and The Bunnymen album in this list and I liked this one more than the first one.
Decent 3,5
"The Killing Moon" is a creative grandiose pop hit. The rest of the album is what would otherwise be interesting dark, brooding symphonic pop/rock that is brought down by cliche 80's production.
The cheery upside to post punk, has a bit of a loose Doors-style energy against the new age of sounds
"Thorn of Crowns" is just odd. Sounds like the band was just goofing around, making noises and playing with the echo features on the recording equipment. "Killing Moon" is their big hit here, and is the strongest track. I could say more, but it isn't necessary because this is yet another album that makes me question why it made it on this list.
It's okay. Can't imagine myself coming back to much, there are other better things of a similar style available
Very Doors-y, very 80s.
I really like The Killing Moon. The rest of this ranges from just ok to pretty good.
Decent. Only recognised one song though.
Not my favourite album by them but a nice listen
This was okay.
Echo & the Bunnymen were the band that the ultra mega cool kids liked in high school. I liked this one well enough, I guess. Killing Moon will always be the fave on this record.
I really liked it! I’d only heard the most popular songs but I liked the rest a lot too, will definitely listen again. Really easy listening and great moody vibes it’s low key but still engaging all the way through.
Better than the other Echo album I heard during my first 100 days.
Started out annoyed by this, really grew on me as it went and was taken on a journey. Finished too early for me to fully love it though.
Good not great
Erinnert mich angenehm an The Cure.
Odd tracking given that the back half is far superior to the front half
Overraskende helt ok.
I liked the Beatles cover. A bit of a fun David Bowie vibe.
A bit too dour and proto-indie for me, but some of the orchestration on this really lifts it
Something happens in my brain when you take a chord to its sustained 4th and then back again. And apparently Echo & The Bunnymen got the memo because they pull that simple trick multiple times and now I think I liked this album a lot more than I really did. I gave them one star for 'Crocodiles'. I'm not sure how they got so much better in just four years but I'll gladly listen to this again.
Mindre traditionel post-punk.
Nice! Did not know they were the ones who made The Killing Moon, since I've only ever heard Pavements (great) cover of it.
This was interesting. I never heard of this group before and I probably never would have if it wasn’t for this list. It was weird but I liked it. I may give it another listen.
Perfect encapsulation of 1984
decent vibes, I’d listen to this again
It's one of those albums that became background music and that I forgot I was listening to.
6.5/10 - good but for a specific time and feeling
good! but wouldnt listen again
Oh to be cursed witn having made a song as good as “The Killing Moon”. Incredible vocal performance and definitely an influential sound. It's just that there's not a single track that is anywhere as close as "The Killing Moon".
I love the Killing Moon so much but the rest of the album bled together a bit, I think I will like it more on repeated listens.
I feel somewhat disappointed by this one, I liked The Killing Moon and Silver before today and I was hoping the rest of the album would be at least as good.
The second half is much better than the first, but not enough save this album. The Killing Moon is a song I already knew and I love a lot, but I never listened to the album it's featured on before, so my hopes were pretty high unfortunately. Not a bad album but eh, just expected better
it was good, but I got kinda bored/wouldn’t put it on again- I liked the last two songs best
"Crystal Days" and "The Killing Moon" vastly outweigh every other track on here, which are all fine, but nothing I'd ever seek out
Overwrought gothic whimsy with a punk edge. Loved the orchestral elements. Some of these lyrics are a bit much. Solid 3/5. Others did it better.
My listening conditions weren't optimal with my toddler screaming through some of the later songs. I was familiar with the more popular songs off of this album like Killing Moon. I honestly thought I would like it more and maybe the listening conditions of the day were a detractor. But I also might just be getting past my more gothy days as a middle aged man and I have a little less patience for some of the singing on here
Decent listen but didn't grab me
Seven Seas was my favorite track. Overall it was a fine album, not something I will revisit but pretty good
I would I thought I would like this more than I did. It’s more of a chamber pop than really alt rock/new wave as in their other albums.
That's not my taste in music - But ok
Ocean Rain is impeccably moody, carefully arranged, and very much of its era. The sweeping strings, dramatic pacing, and brooding atmosphere all do exactly what they’re supposed to do. I get why this album has endured as a touchstone of mid-80s alternative romanticism. That said, it doesn’t give me much to hold onto. The mood is consistent, but it rarely deepens into something that feels personal or surprising. Instead of pulling me in, it keeps me at a tasteful distance. I appreciate the ambition and the commitment to atmosphere, but the songs themselves don’t stick with me in a way that invites return listens. I love plenty of 80s music, but this isn’t the corner of the decade I’d reach for. It’s not bad by any means. It’s just… fine. Respectable, well made, historically understandable, and ultimately not very compelling for me. A straightforward three stars.
not bad for a bunch of British indie blokes
This was okay thought I’d like it more
Unexpectedly surprise - this is pretty good!
3 1/2. There are a couple of great songs.
A few good songs. I think I’ll listen to it a few more times.
The songs don't blow me away so much but I do like his voice. The Killing Moon is a great song.
Compared to other post-rock albums, I enjoyed "Ocean Rain". I always thought Echo and the Bunnymen was a cool band name. "Ocean Rain" could've gotten a higher rating if it didn't have that 80's feel. "Nocturnal Me" was my favourite from the album. Let's see what today brings. 3 stars for "Ocean Rain".
Not bad, just not my jam
It was ok. A bit bland, with a good song thrown in here and there Rounding up to a 3 ⭐️
A bit of a mixed bag for me, listening to the band for the first time. I enjoy joining the dots in music history, and you can hear the Bowie influence here, as well as the influence they must've had on the baggy Manchester music scene a few years later. However, I found several songs pretty grating for some reason; maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this today, and I would've loved it on a different day.
Echo and the Bunnymen, could have become as big as U2 and their music was just as good. This album was very enjoyable.
I saw Echo live due to wanting to see the support band, who cancelled and never played again. This is a pretty unremarkable album aside from the obvious standout, which is wonderful. The very embodiment of a 3.
Was looking forward to listening to this through but was kind of underwhelmed by it. ‘The killing moon’ stands heads and shoulders over the rest of it where some of them sounded like incomplete demos somehow, ‘thorn of crowns’ in particular. Sounds like it needed a bit more polish and finesse than what was presented.
Decent. Did not really pop for me.
Okay.
Wound up hearing this, like, three times yesterday, and each time there were moments I thought I liked it and others when it was just fine. They sort of straddle a line between The Smiths and The Cure, wch isn't a bad thing. Can't say any track really grabbed me; maybe "Killing Moon."
Feel like I need to give this one another go at some point.
album is decent but nocturnal me is amazing
Sounds like every indie band from the North West
Mellow 80s rock, all kind of sounded the same, it was ok
I like it, like a more orchestral Cure.
Good vibes overall
Very Echoey, the knob was turned high on all the vocals. I love the song on the Donnie Darko soundtrack, and the rest of the album is just as dark and moody.
I like this album just fine but to get this the day after Disintegration, it just makes the Bunnymen’s version of gothic pop seem like kiddie stuff. I feel bad because I am a fan of the album and have been for a while but in this context I’m giving it a 5/10. Favorite tracks-“Silver” “Thorn of Crowns” and “The Killing Moon”
Fine enough
Had heard about this band but never bothered to listen to them. I liked this album. Will listen to it again
E&TB are the Doors to U2s Led Zeppelin - dark and moody to U2s rafter rattling bombast. You can almost here Jim Morrison singing The Yo Yo Man. Some excellent guitar flourishes. Quality.
Not bad, but mostly indistinguishable from the Smiths, Pixies, and the Cure, for better and worse.
Nothing to dislike, but nothing to distinguish it from other pop bands, except doing something that had been done before, while others had moved on.
A decent enough album, but I don't see myself coming back to it. 3.5*
5.5/10
This one really grew on me over the course of listening. The orchestration is pretty cool. It’s not my favorite music or record ever, but it’s weird and creative, and it holds your attention throughout the listen.
I had to listen twice, it's a little boring. It can roll on in the background of just about anything though.
My third one from Echo And The Bunnymen. They were a band I didn't really know very well before starting this project but I seem to remember liking them well enough. From what I've heard I think this is my least favorite of their albums. It just doesn't flow as nicely as the others. Maybe I'm not giving it enough of a chance. It almost just seems like 'here's a song. Ok now here's another one.' Rinse and repeat. I don't know. Maybe I'll have to listen to it again but about 2/3 of the way through and I'm not exactly wowed by this one. There are things I like - the vocals are great and the arrangements are good. 2.5/5
British Rock - etwas verstaubt
I had never heard of Echo & the Bunnyman. The songs on " Ocean Rain" are all in-between styles and to my mind the post-punk label attributed to them doesn't really nail it. Regardless of any categories, I like the more uptempo tracks like "Silver" or "Seven Seas" the best. The whole record is not extremely exciting but surely solid. What surprised me most is that this album was already published in 1984, which means that it has aged very well.
I've never really listened to this band but know a couple tracks on this album, which seemed to be the best two.
Good album, like the 80s style, but I don't really hear anything that impresses me too much. 3.4
As a whole this is an uneven album, The highs are high and the singles and a few other tracks fantastic. Generally loving the orchestration. There are more filler tracks than I'd prefer and the production on those seems uneven.
Silver - 7 Nocturnal Me - 6 Crystal Days - 8 The yo yo man - 5 thorn of crowns - 6 the killing moon - 6 seven seas - 7 my kingdom - 7 ocean rain - 6
gfallt mer eigentli aber hätt ned öbbis mega einzigartigs
Pretty okay. Roots of indie rock with a sad-boy British twinge. I don’t think it was quite as good as the other echo and the Bunnymen that I had on this list. Or maybe you only need one of them in your life. Production is pretty cool on good speakers.
One of these lines was made up by AI, but you'll need to listen carefully to work out which! "Swung from a chandelier, my planet sweet on a silver salver" "You think you're a vegetable, never come out of the fridge." "A clockwork swan on a silver tray, its feathers cast in concrete blue" "C-c-c-cucumber. C-c-c-cabbage. C-c-c-cauliflower. Men on Mars. April showers." ...but I think the albums more enjoyable if you try not to hear the words
Still a pretty solid album. Just not as good as 20-year-old me thought it was.
# 591 : Ocean Rain Ocean Rain - A light drizzle of nostalgia. Ocean Rain starts off strong, with that unmistakable 80s sound and production that immediately sets the mood. There are some genuinely good foot-tappers here, and the band clearly knows how to craft a vibe. But the album fluctuates—sometimes really good, sometimes forgettable. It’s the kind of record you vaguely remember from days gone by, but if someone asked you who the band was, you’d probably shrug. It sounded better on the second pass, but still lands squarely in the “I kind of like it” zone. A few standout moments surrounded by a sea of average. Best Track (if you must): The Killing Moon – haunting, melodic, and the one track that truly rises above the tide. Verdict: A relic of a genre long gone. Good, but not great—and mostly washed away by time. Closing thought: Ocean Rain? More like a light drizzle of nostalgia.
3.5 for me. Killing moon is a classic but the rest is a bit hit and miss. Does sound like a mash up of all those 80s goth/moody bands though
Didn't love it didn't hate it. Recognizable songs were Silver and The Killer Moon.
I liked this better when it was the Simple Minds album I was assigned previously.
Honestly not bad but some of these songs are NOT IT (thorn of crowns). I liked seven seas, but this is just 80s mellow, sorry. 3/5
So much possibility, so much hubris
Good album
pretty cool, very british. not much to say
Pleasant, but not compelling. 2.5/5
Don’t think I ever heard any of these. Not bad
Nothing special.
i really really like the guitars (especially on ‘my kingdom’) but most of the tracks fell a little flat for me for a reason that i can’t quite articulate. the melodies are just kind of dull i guess? i like the lyrics of ‘nocturnal me,’ for example, but i thought the structure of the song was actually not that interesting. fav tracks: silver; the killing moon
Unevenly executed Echo And The Bunnymen crests on The Killing Moon with gentle rises for My Kingdom, Silver, and Ocean Rain while it falls on so much else. The decision to record the bulk of it with an orchestra was a stretch — they definitely got all wet in the reaching and I think they knew it.
Enjoyed the hits, but found the rest a bit uninspiring
Killing Moon is a great song. Some of the other songs are quite good. Some are not so good. The absence of a full drum set is noticable.
Every so often someone puts "the cutter" on a playlist and I think, wow, I really underestimated this band. Then I listen to this, and yep, a track or two that really moves me, but the rest feels flat and distant. 2.5 stars.
Most of the album is just okay. But it gets a 3 anyway because The Killing Moon is one of my all time favorite 80s songs.
I love The Killing Moon, but the rest of the album wasn't my thing. A bit of a letdown.
And the award for the most creative use of the phrase "Kissing the Tortoise" in a song goes to "Seven Seas". Quirky, but likeable.
New wave, really not for me but it's not terrible. This record was more surreal than I expected. Also that music video for Seven Seas...
Pretty good
Fine
Started off thinking this would be really good. I liked it, didn’t love it.
Good Alt.-Rock.
Weird and I was low-key into it
Rv
A good album to listen to if you're talking with your coworkers about how it's okay not to be sad if a terrible person bites it in very ironic fashion. 3.5
Pleasantly surprised by this one. 3.5
A delightful Sunday morning listen
7/10
A few songs are standouts on this album and really capture the era. The others are decent and fit well with the genre but are forgettable. I’m glad I listened to this album but it’s not one I think I’ll come back to repeatedly.
-hmm not bad. i don’t think i’ll ever be a huuuge fan of Echo And The Bunnymen for no other reason than difficulty connecting with their music but i can understand why this is an important album -i would like to listen to it again because i feel like it’s very hard to place some of those songs. my opinion is subject to change -Favorites are The Yo Yo Man and The Killing Moon
"Ocean Rain" has that delightful 80's vibe that surprisingly grew on me! It turned out to be more enjoyable than I initially thought, with some catchy tunes that make you want to sway.
Not the strongest work of the Bunnymen & Co
A good showing from Echo, but felt the Bunnymen were a bit lacklustre on this one.
it was good. As usual, the biggest hit is head and shoulders above the rest but I still liked the album.
Like The Cure but not gay enough
fine I guess nothign special
Da het mis hoffnigsvolle Herz grad en bürzelbaum gmacht woni Echo And The Bunnymen und e 80er Band gseh han, obwohl ich nur The Killing Moon vo ihne kennt han. Jetzt nach em Album safe to say, das vor allem The Killing Moon en riise Banger isch! Darum klassisch 3 Todesstern
Speziel aber au easy. Churzzitig heds mi a e mix zwüsche wirhnachts- und rock musik erinnered. Wirdi wohl nüm allzu oft lose Aber voll easy Prace
The Album indeed hits more at night. 3-4 Songs grew on me after a few listenings. The Killing Moon is a Banger
This is fine and kinda boring 80's post-punk this list is full of. I enjoyed it but I never really feel anything from it and it has no staying power with me. 6/10
The band's second album in this project within a few days. I hope that's it now. I did like this album better than the previous one. I stopped listening to one track because it started to get on my nerves. I won't be listening to this album again anytime soon. 3/5
Good :)
I loooove The Killing Moon.
OK
I dunno maybe a 2. Inspired!
Not bad! This is one I used to own a copy of in college. There was a point where the new wave vibe and strings really resonated with me, but now it strikes me as kinda goofy. I hadn't listened to it since I heard James Murphy bad mouth Echo and the Bunnymen as an example of an embarrassing/bad band that he used to be into.
I quite liked this one and the atmosphere that it set. I feel like The Killing Moon is a very familiar song, but I can't figure out why.
May be worth another listen but fell into good, not great, for me
silver- 6 nocturnal me- 6 crystal days 5 the yo yo man- 6 thorn of crowns- 5 killing moon- 7 seven seas- 6 my kingdom- 6 ocean rain- 6
Pretty 80’s-Tastic. My only familiarity with this band was from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Good listen overall, but overall pretty one-note
3.25 /5 Less depressing than a lot of new wave and was pretty poppy overall. A fun listen. Fave song: Killing Moon
I don't have much to say on this one. Maybe it's just to hot to think clearly, but it's just not interesting. It's in a weird middle ground of punk and new wave. I'm waiting for it go both more bright and weird, and more muddy and sincere, and it doesn't. I mostly liked it, I just don't know when I would ever want anything here over other music. It's in that weird nebula with Joy Division/New Order and the Cure, where I'd just rather go for Bowie, the Talking Heads, or Depeche Mode.
Decent
Pft idk
Decent album.
Not my style. They make Depeche Mode seem uplifting! :-) Big band in their prime...I listened, but I don't have much to say. Sorry...
They've got some great tracks but a serious lack of range in their albums
I liked this. The singer's voice is very clear. There are some elements of early REM here but with strings on one song while also having a kind of Talking Heads rhythm,
Mee
A few moments that I thought were cool, but not a lot. I’m also tired. 2.5
Always found them overrated. Neither groundbreaking nor particularly pleasing.
Enjoyable, but the bands these guys get compared to are all significantly more enjoyable for me.
Another middle-of-the-road 80s pop/alternative album. It’s not bad, just... fine. There’s some atmosphere here, and a few moments where the strings give things a little lift, but nothing that really sticks. It feels like the kind of album that gets praised more for its aesthetic than its actual songs. The vocals are dramatic, the production is moody, and the whole thing tries hard to feel important, but most of it just floats by without leaving much behind.
“The Killing Moon” is a helluva song, of course. I just never connected with the rest of the album. And I still don’t! Given my age and tastes, this album should take up prime real estate in my wheelhouse. The songs just don’t land, though. I generally like *the sound,* but that’s the best I can say.
Kind of enjoyable but not something I’d go back to.
Not necessarily my speed, but still a good listen. I liked a lot of the moody arrangements and instrumentation. Favorite song: The Killing Moon
Another one of those albums I'd never heard before, where the famous single I am familiar with turns out to be the standout anyway. Good album, I like their sound, but nothing hugely memorable outside of The Killing Moon.
I think I need more time with this one but I enjoy it. It’s classic 80s Brit pop, it has good atmosphere. In some ways it’s ahead of its time, in others it feels dated.
Solid with a few great ones.
Hard to sing. (40 known/83 new)
Pretty easy to listen to, but didn’t really blow me away
I’d listen to it again, but wouldn’t go out of my way to do so
It's like U2 meets The Cure.
britit rakastaa tätä yhtä genreä! klikkaa ja saat tietää.. uskomattoman karismaattinen laulaja? en ole koskaan tuntenut itseäni näin karismanitoituneeksi kuin tätä.. incredible rich colorful and interesting and unique atypical voice koskaan kuullukkaan mitään tällaista lähimaillakaan laulaja kuulostanut tältä! jep kannattaa vertailla itseänne esimerkiksi the doors bändiin jossa paljon tylsempi ja epäkiinnostavampi laulaja verrattuna vittu ian mcculloch joka mestari lajissaan.. thank you maestro... echo... echoo... echoooes..And no one calls us to move on. And no one forces down our eyes. No one speaks and no one tries. No one flies around the Sun nocturnal me
Was not what I had in mind for echo and the bunnymen. Always thought they were more punk than on their way to Madchester. A real sound of Morrisey meets Cure and had always thought that ‘The Killing Moon’ was The Smiths! 🤦🏻♂️ generally not a huge fan of the sound. A bit goth, new age whine. Saw another review say acceptable, but not exceptional and that pretty much sums it up.
Some songs are better than others. Like way better Highlight Killing Moon
Perfectly pleasant to listen to, not gonna ever be my favorite.
I love Echo and the Bunnymen, but so much of Ocean Rain feels like a misstep. I appreciate their willingness to experiment, and yes, I can understand how leaning into string instrumentation seems like a logical next step, but it robs the album of so much energy. "Silver" is an excellent opening track that is absolutely representative of the band, only to be followed by the waltz-ish "Nocturnal Me" which sucks the life and momentum out of the album. The next few tracks do very little to rectify this and range in quality from "meh" to "decent". The sequencing of the album could use some work, as well, because they definitely backloaded this album. At just over 37 minutes, there is no reason this album should drag at all, and yet it does. Ocean Rain may be Ian Mculloch's favorite, as well as the fan favorite, but I feel pretty confident telling them they're wrong. Highlights: "Silver" and everything from "The Killing Moon" to the end. Low Points: "Nocturnal Me" just sucks, "Crystal Days" and "The Yo Yo Man" are very middling. If it's an Echo album, Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, and Porcupine are all much more essential.
Killing moon was the stand out track and the rest sorta muddled together.
3.1 2x decent
There were some really weird songs a few really good ones. I enjoyed The Killing Moon and Seven Seas.
Third Echo and the Bunnymen album, and the third different rating.
Killing mood is fantastic, the rest of the album was just alright. 80's sounding moody synth pop.
