Reviews (page 5 of 8)

I find it to be generically British and mopey. It's not bad but meh.

Poppier than I expected! I enjoyed the singles, and The Killing Moon is epic. Might revisit later. 3.5

Th Killing Moon is a banger

Love the genre, some great songs but overall just average

I feel I may have to come back to this. I've had mixed feelings through out the whole album. It started out decently fine but by the time I got to "The Yo Yo Man", I wanted this album to be over. But then came a trio of 80s gothic pop perfection in "The Killing Moon", "Seven Seas" and, "My Kingdom". Honestly, I think of the rest of the album felt like this, I'd be way more on board. I'm giving it a lower mid 3½. I do honestly kinda feel if this album didn't hit me the way it should have today. There are some killer parts to some of the other tracks, especially "Thorn of crowns" but, the overall droning of the album I just could 100 get behind. (7.35) ★★★½

Echo & The Bunnymen have long been a band I feel like I should like more than I actually do. Even before I heard this album, I always thought "The Killing Moon" was a great song, but I'm not that into the rest of it. I think it's a bit backloaded -- the last four songs are my favorites -- but the rest is just okay for me. 3.5 stars.

I love all the Echo & Bunnymen flavours. Ocean Plain. All the flavours… To be fair this one does have a couple of OK tunes for them with Crystal Days and The Killing Moon but Ian McCulloch is still a bit of a bozo and all the other songs tend to be really dreary and dour.

Album rates a 3 on the strength of 'The Killing Moon', such a great song. The rest, especially in the album's first half, are much more forgettable.

shits good. Pretty sure I've heard THE KILLING MOON on the radio somewhere. My Kingdom is a jam.

Not bad. 80s goth rock type of thing, but not as good as The Cure or The Smiths.

It was alright

It’s the one with killing moon on it

Nice, but nothing special. Good for background music

Intriguing lyrics with obscure religious motives. Music itself lacks punch; sits comfortably somewhere between Siouxsie and a post-punk tinged version of the college rock of R.E.M. (The Killing Moon, Seven Seas) - way more interesting when it gets more arty and dissonant (cf. Thorn of Crowns). Creative (and to some degree weird) string flourishes add a pleasant and a memorable touch to the melodies but let the songs seem a bit tame here and there. Superb vocal performance on the closing track.

Good enough for one listen through

I think I liked this but I'm not sure and don't want to re-listen to confirm. Not a glowing review but at least I get to proceed to the next album.

Sounds like some guys from the UK heard the song at the end of the Breakfast Club and decided to make a whole album around it. Very meh sounding to me.

It's okay

This was interesting yet forgettable. It was like they walked so Depeche Mode and Flock of Seagulls could run, in my humble opinion.

Fine. I suppose.

Very pretty tracks, some of them fall a bit flat though.

This one surprised me. I had only heard The Killing Moon (which slaps!) before. Real close to a 4 star

While delivering their most recognizable single, this album epitomizes my Echo And The Bunnymen experience: acknowledged talent that never quite converts to genuine passion.

I feel like this is a good baseline album for if something deserves a 2 or a 3 on the list. Probably the most 5/10 album I’ve heard, pretty decent rock with nice instrumentation and stuff. It’s very standard imo

For a post-punk sounding album, I don't hate it! The rock and orchestral elements work well with the voice, but nothing groundbreaking.

Get past the first song. Listen to it all. It grows on you. Not first choice but at least understand the appeal.

Sowieso top vanwege "The Killing Moon", misschien wel dé 80's-track. Verder pakt niet alles me zoals die banger.

Not a fan of the post punk vocals. The lyrics are a bit cringey, reminds me of arts students trying to be more profound than they really are. But the second half of the album grew on me sonically with the jangly guitars and drums.

So close to a 4. Really takes me back to my high school days. 3.95

Ta bueno. No me está entrando del todo, creo que he escuchado cosas similares que me gustan más. pero está bien.

Not bad but nothing special

It's alright, a couple are catchy.

interesting

The one amazing hit and a lesser hit I was aware of, the rest of the album is fine but never holds up to the banger.

My kind of music but it didn't seem to grab me at all on first listen. Might need to give it further tries, but sounded like a poor version of The Chameleons honestly.

This album was just ehhh. Mediocre singing, draggy, little variation. Really a 2.75.

It's better than it should be. The Killing Moon is a great song and the lead off track is pretty good. The rest is moody and good for a fall afternoon.

Low streaming quality on Spotify weighs this rating down some, but was a decent enough album for my tastes.

This album definitely had one of those "OH THIS IS WHO PERFORMED THAT SONG" moments. Forgettable otherwise.

Pretty good, a nice jangly sound, and kinda like minor The Cure or a more gothic Smiths kinda thing - I used to really like The Killing Moon and I think that's still a highlight, but the album doesnt totally click!

The most 3 star album ever. Very ok. A few good tracks. A few sleepers. Very British like half this list.

Nice music, 3.5

I've had 2 Echo & the Bunnymen albums before on this generator (Porcupine, and Crocodiles). They are an 80's new wave kinda band. Not bad, but nothing special I don't find. This album is definately rear loaded. After The Killing Moon, all the songs are fantastic compared to the start of the record. Favorite songs: My Kingdom, The Killing Moon, Seven Seas, Crystal Days Least favorite songs: Nocturnal Me, Thorn of Crowns 3/5

Pretty decent new wave, wasn’t familiar with any of the songs

An interesting album- went in blind. It sounded like a late 60s / early 70s rock album (very The Doors esque)- I was surprise to discover it was from the 80s. Songs were catchy and I liked the sound. Overall- probably in the 2.5-3 range

Good rock record. Fun, quirky rhythms and you can certainly hear the influence that this band has provided to other bands after it. This is one I hadn't heard before, but recognized a track or two. Solid one.

‘The Killing Moon’ is of course the best track on ‘Ocean Rain’ by a country mile, however ‘Sliver’, ‘Crystal Days’, ‘My Kingdom’ and ‘Angels And Devils’ are the other main highlights and great songs in their own right. The rest of the album I found to be quite forgettable. Was expecting more overall.

I typically love post punk and new wave but this does nothing for me. Disappointing tbh.

Netural

Parece a trilha sonora dos filmes de David Lynch. Se isso é bom ou ruim, vai de cada um!

Overall: 6/10 Man, those strings are corny as hell and date the album terribly. The first half had me considering giving this a lower rating but the second half had some pretty good guitar work and catchier songs. The guitars are incredibly jangly. Maybe it's cause I've gotten a lot of sad sounding albums lately but I'm feeling a teeny bit burnt out from the doom and gloom. Fav Song: The Killing Moon Least Fav Song: The Yo Yo Man

I enjoyed listening to this one, but I wouldn't listen to it again.

It's got them Donnie Darko vibes but that doesn't save an album

mid 2,5

a 3.5 creo que llega

Феноменальная в своей невыразительности на фоне коллег по жанру группа, но это приятный альбом в целом. Лучшая песня - Nocturnal Me.

Echo and the Bunnymen is such a fire name for a band

This is okay from a pop music perspective. The songwriting and vocals are there. But rock music requires more than that. We need big drums. We need better guitar parts. We need a little swagger.

first listen loved the jangle, baroque, and strings but don't like the post-punk

This band is fine, but I don’t care for any of their music. This is the best one, for the record.

3 almost a 3.5. The killing moon.

I see real flashes of greatness in this album. It starts off strong with Silver, which is making use of the full orchestra very nicely and I feel like I'm in for a banger of an album. Unfortunately the album quickly becomes very samey and uncohesive. The full orchestra doesn't seem to be utilized to the degree that I'd hoped, and despite The Killing Moon propping the album back up, this was a very disappointing listen, mainly due to the strong start.

The better quality end of thingy male vocals.

I listened to it twice. I knew killing moon, but the rest of the album became a bit of a blur. Even the next morning in a more relaxed setting it didn't really give new insights.

Not my thing. Fine overall.

The. Killing. Moon. What a song. The sound of EATB epitomizes the mid and early 80’s alternative music scene. Moody music.

3.5 stars

Pretty good

It’s an 80s album for sure

Cool sound

It was fine

Not my favorite, but it grew on me as the album progressed

It's hard to pinpoint this exact genre, but it was fairly fun trying to figure it out. Favorite song: "Nocturnal Me"

Better than the last one

For a band that I didn't listen to in the 80's, Echo seems to pop up a lot on my music feeds and on this list more than I expected. "The Killing Moon", especially I've heard more in the past year than ever before and I admit it's a fine song, but the rest of the album, though mainly solid, didn't hold my interest til the end. They have that smooth, Brit-pop sound reminiscent of the Smiths that is easy to listen to, but doesn't excite me. Good release, from a band that I'm guessing will hear more from on the list. Not essential to me, but probably deserves a place.

Not bad!

The vocal delivery is like Bono trying to channel Jim Morrison's ghost (especially on thorn of crowns). Ambitious and moody. Like a strange hybrid of The Cure, Bauhaus, XTC, and U2.

Solid middle for me - the slight majority of songs were exceptional at creating dark gothic atmospheres and really drew me in. Others very much felt like filler material, and as such I didn't feel as drawn in as I'd hope to be.

Possibly a 3 or a 3.5. This was an ok album

Some good ol’ fashioned British post-punk.

Decently fun.

This album def grew on me in multiple listens , it’s post punk but melodic and at times orchestral It’s just below amazing for me in all of these categories to justify a 4 but def a worthwhile listen and maybe just unique enough to not be lost in all the 70-80s rocks albums

I always want to love these guys more that I do. Singles are often good but I struggle with their albums - the melody’s just aren’t strong enough. Both things are clearly evident here. Ocean Rain contains the strongest of their singles but the rest is forgettable (sadly).

Kind of a folksy rock. A few good songs but mostly forgettable.

New wave/indie sound with a little bit of The Cure thrown in. Not a bad sound at all and there was some standout drumming, but overall just not very memorable outside of The Killing Moon

Favorite Track: My Kingdom

The Triffids if they were good. Liked the guitar playing on this one. There isn't really a bad song on here, the Killing Moon is probably the highlight but a lot are great. Still not really a fan of this 80's synth-pop business.

Always love the lead singer’s voice and the band’s originality, but this record was missing something I can’t put my finger on.

The Killing Moon is obviously iconic and the rest of the album slid along nicely.

I kind of liked this. Very edgy and different, upbeat and soulful.

don't understand the hype

I really like Killing Moon, but the rest of this album was very meh. Not even sure I'd be able to have recognized most of these as Echo and the Bunnymen. I probably wouldn't choose to listen to this whole album again start to finish. 2.5/5

I enjoyed it pretty much, it's a good New Wave record. Interesting musical choices.

Not my favourite Bunnymen album but solid. Not action packed of full of creative genius. I don't love it but can't bring myself to disllike it.

Some decent songs, and some bad ones.

EatB had an identifiable sound from the guitar, orchestra in the background, and lead singer’s voice. Prior to the internet, rumor was that the orchestra was just a sound machine (named Echo). Ocean Rain is an enjoyable listen; great start with Silver, Nocturnal Me, and Crystal Days. Could do without the clangy, choppy Thorn Of Crowns. Back on track with Killing Moon (best song) and Seven Seas. Weak finish but overall a good album. (3.5*s)

This sounds like a darker, less theatrical version of Nick Cave (equally as pretentious but maybe slightly more listenable). Could do without "Thorn of Crowns" but "The Killing Moon" redeems. There's a couple good tracks but not anything noteworthy, lots of "la la las" and "do dos". I will say the release year had my expectations set pretty low so they're better than I thought and I can see how this influenced other bands to come. It's like goth meets punk but make it 80's and then throw in some strings. 2.65 for orchestra.

I've had Echo And The Bunnymen on my radar for a bit as a band I need to check out. I'm glad 1001 gave me the excuse to give an album a listen. I went in with tempered expectations and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. They bring a pretty subdued synth rock sound. Ian McCulloch brings a vocal style that almost acts as another instrument that I enjoy. They have a pretty clear sound that I don't mind. I could see myself checking out some of their other hits. Ocean Rain is a solid album. 3.50 stars

I listened to this a lot, trying to decide what my thoughts on it were. Ultimately, I think the fact that I'm on my 5th or 6th listen and still don't know is probably my answer. It's not bad, but I'm having a hard time really caring about it. 3/5 Highlights: Thorn of Crowns

Pretty decent album and I can hear the influence in particularly UK bands that followed. The Killing Moon is the obvious highlight, and everything after that is pretty good too, but I wasn't as huge on the first half.

Nichts Besonderes, sehr unauffällig und hm.

eccentric 80s gothism, it was alright and it has that one song

David Byrne Talking Heads vibes

Love the mood on this. The Killing Moon is such an amazing track. Seven Seas is decent as well. Those three factors bring it to three stars - the rest of the album isn't up to the same standard, though.

We can give it another chance

It's good.

Not bad

Prima ofzo? Niet heel spetterend, niet heel raar

Not bad at all. I find them a little boring though. I know it's good music and whatnot but I got a bit bored. Cool sound overall.

Opzich wel leuk, zou het niet nog eens opzetten

had already known the killing moon, the rest is not up to its level sadly

Having never heard of this band before I was pleasantly surprised. Many good songs and a cohesive album. Not much to say other than I really enjoyed the listen.

Thorn of Crowns has got to be the song that made me go "huh?" the most a song has ever made me go "huh?" Besides that, this is some pretty decent music 👍 3/5

Atmospheric Brit Pop reminiscent of the Smiths.

This was strangely enjoyable, albeit a bit boring. I liked the orchestral parts, which were unexpectedly pleasant. Some of the songs had a Smiths vibes going, the last track seemed very U2-esque.

I like Silver as an opener. Energetic little bop with a lot going on. Ultimately it makes for a fun and luscious song. The bassline on Killing Moon reminds me of an R.E.M song. Fine enough song that stands out from the rest in a good way. Otherwise, this was some fine, but not fantastic (IMO) post-punk. More upbeat and full than some of its contemporaries. Not bad, but not anything I get too excited for. soft 3 / 5

I remember not caring for the last Echo album. This one was fine. Higher side of 3, but definitely not a 4.

The Killing Moon is such a great song. Other than that everything was pretty run of the mill post punk/new wave. Still enjoyable might be my fav of the trio of these guys we've heard so far.

Ocean Rain is probably one of the most fine albums i have looked at on this project. This album does sound good and it does have a few cool moments but i just don't think its really all that special. This album is just another album in the sea of new wave/post punk albums of the 80s along with the rest of them. While i do kinda like the sound of this sort of stuff, they often sound very similar to each other and don't bring much new to the table. Just like a lot of those albums, this album is alright, just i don't have much to really say about it. Best Song: Ocean Rain Worst Song: Silver

I've heard Nocturnal Me before and i am lowkey in love with the spooky vibes of it. a couple times i kind of felt like a pirate sailing on a mission which i fuck with, especially in the yo yo man. Not all of it hit fully, but it's pretty solid especially if it's meant to be a concept album. 1. crystal days 2. the killing moon 3. seven seas

It's obviously good. Brilliant even, sometimes. But. It doesn't hold my attention. I wish it did so that I could know it's dark wonder, but I don't find it compelling.

While they aren't completely absent, the gothic rock sounds that made up Echo & The Bunnymen's earlier albums take a backseat to a bigger sound on Ocean Rain. A sound that evokes the alternative landscape of the mid-80s, a style that now is commonly just lumped into "new wave," even when it isn't really. Either way, this album feels like it's reaching for the stars, as well as a broader appeal, and that can lead to some absolute classics that are still some of the best in the band's catalog, such as the iconic The Killing Moon, but it also means a lot of the album feels like it was inspired a little too heavily by U2's growing popularity and notoriety. The A-side has some good songs, but you won't find anything truly worthy of your time until the B-side, and it comes off as high quality, but sloppy. It has the songs to keep you happy, but I personally think this band was made to be in the goth pantheons, and this album tries to distance itself from that for seemingly little reason, making it weak in comparison to Crocodiles and especially Porcupine.

6/10. Had some good moments, I think I don’t vibe well with the vocals of Echo and the Bunnymen generally.

Other than Killing Moon and Silver seas, the album was just meh. I always thought that I would like this group better. Was introduced to them in the 80’s and thy never caught on with me. They get an A+ for their good singles, a D for the rest of album. C is the grade and I guess that’s 3 stars.

This is really close to being a 4 star

I'm a sucker for "The Killing Moon" and moody, atmospheric music, but this album didn't really live up to my expectations.

Good stuff.

It’s ok

Decent.

I like about half of this, which is more than I thought I would at first. It’s a weird vibe, some stuff that sounds great, and some truly awful shit, sometimes in the same song (looking at you, “Thorn of Crowns”).

I quite like the theatrical edge to the music these Bunnymen make. If anything they I’d prefer more of it - having only heard The Killing Moon before I was expecting the album to be more dramatic, less… jaunty? Still, it’s a lush and pleasant listen overall.

Listened Before? N This is not Echo's best effort but I still liked it fine. Some songs drag. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: The Killing Moon

Probably has their biggest hit. Wanted to like the album more. Maybe just not in the right headspace.

I don’t know if this makes any sense, but during my listen, I had the thought, “These guys believe in monsters.” Like, there’s something lurking just outside of the music? That element of the music did give me a thrill. Besides Killing Moon, however, I’m not sure I’ll be revisiting this album.

I love the one song, the rest is a mood for sure.

Solid album with "the killing floor" being the clear standout track for me. What an awful band name.

alright

Waiver between 2 & 3...it was just fine. Things were on the border line of good. Lyrics were weird and felt forced at time. Melody and music was good but also felt like they were trying to hard.

This was solidly in the middle for me. Had a cool new wave vibe and it was a pleasant listen, but nothing wowed me and I got a little bored with it.

OK, this album has a very pretty atmosphere. It's lush and immersive, and the production feels both grand and intimate.

I love this sound but have always preferred Songs to Learn and Sing as an album. Silver and the Killing Moon are brilliant. Seven Seas is solid. The rest sounds engineered.

I only managed to listen to this once all the way through and I would consider this more of an "incomplete" than a final judgment. I certainly enjoyed some of the tracks (Killing Moon being a standout) and might give this another try, but it didn't especially pop for me.

Having only ever heard "The Killing Moon" before, this album was... a surprise. First off, nothing on here is as good as "The Killing Moon", which is nearly perfect in terms of mood, catchiness, vocal range, etc. (I say "nearly" because I could do without the vocals at the end of the song, which star to veer into karaoke territory and our beyond the vocalist's range.) As for the rest of the album, it starts off sounding like Neil Diamond and then goes into weird Jim Morrison territory. Very bizarre. Not the worst album, but not at all what I was expecting.

Is there an echo in the room? I noted that we had made it into the 800s without getting an E&TB album, and so of course here is another just a week later. The low expectations that have been created for early 80s British new wave over those 800+ albums benefitted “Crocodile,” but I worried that E&TB’s other albums wouldn’t be as tolerable. But, in fact, “Ocean Rain” wasn’t too bad. “The Killing Moon” shows why it’s their best song, though Amazon Music claims “Lips Like Sugar” from 1987’s self-titled album is more popular. And “Lips Like Sugar” is annoying. That’s the E&TB direction I’m dreading.

Ja men det här är som regel något jag gillar. My Kingdom var bra. I övrigt ganska sådär.

Under a killing moon känner jag igen.

Standard, middle-of-the-line British 80's pop. It's alright but I wouldn't listen again in a hurry.

I like the "lighthearted impending doom" feel throughout this album. It's incredibly weird, but not necessarily bad. I first noticed it in Nocturnal Me, a strange kind of sea shanty with a foreboding chord progression (lots of diminished chords) and yet a gentle, childlike texture of light acoustic instruments. Lots of orchestral strings are used in combination with Spanish guitar(?). The feel is subtler in other tracks – such as The Yo Yo Man, where the medium-tempo swung rhythm and low vocals create a subtle ominousness that's otherwise obscured by the joyful vocals. Thorn of Crowns is similar. Cool juxtaposition between carefree and ominous elements, but I wish they'd picked one or the other. The whole album experience is kind of shaky. But I'll come out and say it again: claiming you're standing up against the "music elite" by creating (deliberately bad) punk/post-punk music is only a sound idea if you're actually good at playing your instrument. And nowhere is this rule broken more egregiously than in post-punk vocals. Echo & the Bunnymen is no exception. Tracks like Crystal Days and The Yo Yo Man are only listenable for their instrumentalists – and nearly unlistenable for their untrained, out-of-tune vocalist. ... Okay, it's not that bad – in fact, at times, it's almost Jim Morrison-esque (but more out of tune) – but it's bad enough in its post-punk context that I should point it out. The exception is The Killing Moon; I actually really like the singing there. The Killing Moon is also a standout track for its very thick, ongoing sonic texture. Reminds me of Radiohead. Hard to explain why, but it sounds great. The following track, Seven Seas, is also strong. A bit reminiscent of early Bowie (1970/1). Close call between 3 and 4. I do like it more than Porcupine, which I gave a 3. I'll give this a high 3. 3/5 Key tracks: Silver, The Killing Moon, Seven Seas

I always enjoy an album that's shorter than 45 minutes. Besides that, this is fun pop-rock. It's hard not to compare Echo & The Bunnymen to The Cure, but I think I prefer the former. Highlight track on this album for me is My Kingdom.

Nocturnal Me The Killing Moon Seven Seas Ocean Rain Refreshing change of pace. Enjoyed the listen as it was simple and easy to listen to. Felt different in a way I can’t describe.

That's gotta be the most enjoyable Echo album that I've heard.

Fuck yes, The Killing Moon is some good shit! Rest of the album pretty mediocre to me, but seemingly inspirational.

Fairly non eventful indie. Wasn't what i was expecting

Getting rather bored with this

A cassette from my youth. Didn't get much play - Killing Moon and Seven Seas aside. Clearly so, as I didn't recognise any of the other songs.

Decent. Nothing to dislike about it but didn’t love it either.

good enough album nothing special

kind of didn't mind any of the songs but also didn't love them. Killing Moon is always a good song though.

It's OK, not a huge fan of the New Wave sounding vocals. But The Killing Moon is a classic, so that was nice to hear.

3.5/5 - it kinda sounds like something that would be used in the credits sequence of a Regular Show episode. By the seventh track I was done being able to give the album my full undivided attention as there isn't a lot interesting going on musically. What's there is solid, but it's nothing revolutionary imo

im getting tired of every other album on this list sounding the same even if it's decent.

Man this list really loves British post punk bands. Like most of them, nothing I hate here, but nothing that really speaks to me. Just straight down the middle of the road.

Side B better than Side A. Probably a 3.5 rounded down.

The Killing Moon is the standout track. The rest was ok. An improvement on their debut album Crocodiles

The Killing Moon as best known song. Cool alternative rock.

Cool sound, like a Sunday cleaning day vibe

Not super compelling; good background music

очередная порция о боже где я это уже слышала. норм но чуть более подвывающе чем мне приятно (гёрл юл би э вуман сун вайбз)

Not really great. I used to listen to a lot of this style of music. I was aware of them and probably heard a song or two, but that never really enticed me to listening to an entire album of theirs. Can't really explain why. I like the style overall, and that it was done well, but it didn't mesh with me. That's surprising and something I can't explain.

A few books in the mix

So very 80s but appreciate the more darker dare I say spooky sounds of this. Didn’t blow me away but still a good listen.

Another band that’s apparently essential that i just can’t get into. The Killing Moon is great, but the rest of the album didn’t do much for me. 2.75/5

Feels kinda gothy & The Smiths-y. Almost aimless and unstructured in the songwriting/melodies? Feels both original and unoriginal at the same time. Not my cup of tea.

The Killing Moon Seven Seas

I dug this, but not as much as I thought I would. This reminded me a lot of Arcade Fire, so I'm very grateful it exists. But moment to moment I tend to enjoy other stuff in this vein a bit more than I enjoy this.

The Killing Moon is a classic but the rest is pretty average.

This is 80’s ick IMO. We get some tracks that are just happy and upbeat, and then we get tracks that try to take themselves too seriously and come across as Uber cringe. I’m not as high as everyone else on here apparently as it pertains to post punk, but this was really flat to me. I didn’t have a single track that gripped me like I usually find. As the album progresses, I find myself checking the time and becoming more frustrated. This will deff need a re-listen at some point, as maybe I’m listening in the wrong perspective.

Probably peak E@tB. Lovely orchestration. I do think there are some weaker tracks which brings the score down a bit.

Very much a Cure inspired Brit pop band. Maybe I’m just disenchanted by this stuff, or I just don’t have the ability to appreciate it. The music is creative enough and I like the spacey elements, along with the guitar noodling. I am not so tuned into the shakey vocals or the break from cohesive consistency. Overall some good songs.

I am not sure why it is so special

pretty good but not for me

perfectly ok

I found the music creative, but alas, I just did not click much with this. I did vibe with The Killing Moon and My Kingdom, but that's two - I feel like this music needs an experience or a movie or something to go with it to help, which is fine.

Didn't hate it. Didn't love it. Better than most of the albums I have had suggested so far.

Fine, but nothing special.

This album was good. I liked it's carefree sound. The string were nice and the vocals were good. Nothing striking that blew me away, and contemporaries that released similar albums were much better (Stone Roses self-titled comes to mind). 3/5.

Standard brit soft pop

Reminds me a little of the cure.

Interesting album, nice and varied - I always thought Echo.... were a modern band and sounded nothing like this.

80’s rock with an orchestra. I fell asleep listening to it but what I heard was ok.

This was pretty good. I enjoyed the listen. I was unfamiliar with this group before. Not the best thing to come out of 1984, but worth the listen for sure!

Killing Moon is one of the 80’s great British singles. As good now as it was 40 years ago. Silver & Seven Seas were, predictably the follow-up singles. They used the 35-piece orchestra well. I really liked the variety of ways songs would begin - the brushes on Yo Yo Man; the slightly distorted guitar on Thorn Of Crowns; whatever it is (squeezebox?) on My Kingdom; double bass on the title track. An easy listen.

Oof, are Echo and the Bunnymen possibly the most overrated band of all time? Certainly, if you listen to how they describe themselves ('the greatest album of all time!"), and they could never possibly live up to their own hype. Obviously, 1001 albums love them, as there are three (THREE!) of their albums on this list, of which this is probably the best. Orchestral arrangements that walk the tightrope, staying just on the right side of bombastic. The lyrics are not nearly as clever as Ian McCullough thinks they are ('Thorn of Crowns', amirite?), which makes them The Doors of the 1980s. And they have dated about as well (i.e., they have a shrinking fanbase that are convinced that they are all that and a bag of chips, but the rest of the world shrugs). That said, Killing Moon is a real cracker of a song, distinctive, spooky, soaring, and side two of the original vinyl is generally pretty damn good. But not as good as they think they are.

Some decent songs

13 in een dozijn gitaarmuziek. Niet slecht, zeker niet bijzonder.

It's fine. Interesting but didn't blow me away.

The back of this album really saved it. Its not bad!

Boring pop/rock.

Love the sound of the guitar on this record Will revisit. Currently a really high 3

not memorable

the smiths but with less catchy melody and less interesting vocalist (the two things that make me love the smiths).

I can see how this album was great when it came out. But for me its was just ok.

Interesting Album, like the sounds and style, for me it was compairabale with Men at Work and early INXS records.

Not my fav of their albums but good

Bisschen wie die Beatles in melancholisch. Kann man sich mal anhören, muss ich aber nicht jeden Tag haben.

This was pretty alright the artist/singer had some pretty good talent

We have the cure at home! The cure at home:

Hmmmm....lots of noise about E&TB when they 1st burst out if Liverpool. This album sounds great and somewhat edgy and a bit well, gothy and ethereal but definitely runs out of steam after, Silver, Lips like sugar and the exceptional Killing Moon. Could be better and bit lacking ideas after all that.

I got a little bored at times but it's still a pretty good album. I appreciate the effort and their willingness to try something new.

Pleasant surprise. In the first few songs I think I've heard a lot of David Bowie inspration. 3.5/5.

J'ai eu l'impression d'avoir déjà écouté cet album. Ne s'est pas démarqué pour moi, sans être mauvais. Je l'ai trouvé presque générique

Enjoyable slice of 80s. Killing Moon is a classic.

I wanted to like this more than I did. The Killing Moon is classic, the rest is okay. I'd be willing to give this one another try.

Sounds a lot like an early 54-40… maybe a touch more 80s feel to it. Nothing really pops out, nothing I remember from the radio, but musically, totally fine. Low 3

SOUnds damiliar

I really like "Killing Moon." Most of the other songs didn't do it for me. It has a very dramatic "Moody Blues" kind of sound.

很活泼的80年代音乐,但相对来说不是我的菜

the single does a lot of heavy lifting here, idk some of the songs didn’t do it for me. maybe i just need another listen.

Yea not for me really but killing moon is awesome.

3.5 similar to cure and heads, just not close enough, can see the influence

Right off the bad looking at the album cover and having never heard of this band I am excited for this listen love when they throw something like this at us. Yeah this is some good new wave shit really love the kinda “airy” sound from the guitar and they use the violin(s?) beautifully to fill space big fan. I think it takes me a while to get into an album cause I always feel like my favourites are on the back half whenever we listen to a new album. My top dogs on here are thorn of crowns, killing moon, seven seas, ocean rain (beautiful) and my number 1 my kingdom it’s a bop that guitar is sick and is going into my new wave playlist 100%. yeah never heard of these guys but they’re a great listen wasn’t blown away by much it was all objectively good except for my kingdom that was a huge stand out. Would most certainly consider getting this on vinyl -B (unny boy)

Pretty good album. I had never heard of them before and there we’re definitely some bangers. I think I need to listen to it more for it to really hit. I really liked The Killing Moon.

Definitely unique, but didn't quite make me fall in love with it 3

Blind album, not artist. I also have the hit song liked...? The album is okay. I love the use of strings but the vocalists voice just doesn't appeal to me.

Interesting New Wave record. Sometimes sounds like Robert Smith singing. Album cover looks gloomy, I like it. + Silver + Thorn of Crowns + The Killing Moon (didn't know this was used in Donnie Darko) + Seven Seas + My Kingdom + Ocean Rain

A little weird in a very 80s way

stand out track - The Killing Moon

60/100

I love the theatrical "Nocturnal Me". The snare drum rolls, the strings, the emotive vocals, it really stood out to me. This was a nice album with a lot to like. I enjoyed the vocalist, the band, and the expansion of sounds that they added beyond a typical rock / singer songwriter instrumentation. The only downside for me was that I'm not sure too much of it will be memorable, in fact I couldn't really remember a melody or even the band name when I came back to this after listening yesterday.

Not bad

This album was a decent enough listen, I particularly enjoyed The Killing Moon. But I probably wouldn't be listening to the album in full again

I only knew of Killing Moon from Rock Band 3. Was curious about their music, but not enough to go seek it out. The album is just OK. Nothing was very memorable. I did like the clean sound, but sometimes there was just too little going on. I think I prefer the Cure, who are similar but the songs are catchier.

I like a few tracks. bit sure how quick I would relisten to the album. didn't complete the whole album

3e album van deze lui al. Terwijl het niet boven het maaiveld uitkomt. Dit album is wel het beste van de 3. Soms hebben nummers wel een grappig element, zoals van de Yo Yo Man. Maar echt spannend wordt het niet.

Driemaal is scheepsrecht, we krijgen eindelijk the Killing Moon. De andere 2 albums waren typische 3-sterren albums, maar ondanks dat Killing Moon hier op staat en nog een slipstream hitje, komt dit toch niet boven het maaiveld uit. Wederom middle of the road.

Not bad. Not very memorable either, but it was a decent enough listen.

Somewhat more experimental than their debut, but still a wonderfully produced album that somehow sounds bright, yet moody all at once. I wasn't as big of a fan of the middle of the album but the back half to me is where it really shines, especially the guitar work on songs like My Kingdom, the anthemic quality and orchestral nature of The Killing Moon, and the somber nature of the title track which is the closer. It's overall a good post rock record with a lot of symphonic and new wave elements throughout.

Maybe it's because everything sounds better through my headphones, but I kinda liked this. Better than the other Echo album.

Second Bunnymen album on this list, and about the same as the last. A couple of decent songs , but overall fairly boring.

Chance delivered two albums nearly in a row by this band I'd heard of but never listened to previously. This was shorter and seemed to me considerably wierder than the prior one. Not necessarily to its benefit.

3/9, 33%

Good to listen to in the same mood as listening to the doors.

Above average. First few songs are really great! 3.5

other album we listened to by these guys was better

Obviously The Killing Moon is an all-time great song, the other singles are okay too (but there are still better Echo songs), album tracks didn't leave an impact. Not bad overall, but I was expecting a bit more. 3.5/5

I love Echo but this album sounds like a band trying WAY too hard. Has some great songs but not a great overall album

I was a bit disappointed by this I’ve known the Killing Moon for years and it’s one of my favourite songs but I’d never listened to one of their albums. There was just nothing else remotely as good as The killing moon A shame. Not bad at all but maybe I went in with expectations that just couldn’t be matched

I enjoy this but it’s not 1001 for me

Not bad

Decent

Helt bra men aldrig bättre än så... allt låter bra men de finns nån mediokritet i hu de allt går ihop för mig... idunno Shoutout Brian Griffin fö kovern :)

A grown up, warm rock album. Nothing too testing, some interesting lyrics, melodies and tunes. Obviously Killing Moon is the highlight and overall an enjoyable listen, worth another play to get under my skin. A strong, even high three.

Liked this pretty well

altogether not bad

Meh. Nothing outstanding about this album, except is has "Killing Moon" on it, which is a great track. 3/5

Morose samey with moments of brilliance. Moodily encapsulates the dingey, paranoid, nihilist 80s attitude. Musically: fuz guitar music, low and monotonous but absolutely worth a listen

It is ok

Funny never listen to any there studio albums just the Songs to learn and Sing, which is fantastic. Overall good album, one or two songs I never heard and were really good, though a few not so good. Once again wish I could rate 1/2 stars, this is a 3.5.

An interesting record but not my favorite Echo album (their eponymous 1987 album is). Still a good listen. Killing Moon is a great tune as well as Seven Seas.

I thought this was just okay. Fine, nothing really exciting here for me.

Too much 60s psychedelic influence for my tastes. The Killing Moon is a great track though.

Just okay

Not really my thing. Pleasant enough but nothing stands out. I couldn't pick any song out of a line up

Pretty Decent. Nice voice.

Bright and shiny, fun and psychedelic. lots of new wave influences on a beautifully melodic and symphonic backdrop. Weaves guitar into symphonic music in a way that is often missing from progressive rock ideas. That being said, it lacks a certain willingness to be creative of inventive in a bold manner.

I absolutely love The Killing Moon so much, and expected the rest of the album to be a lot more hauntingly ear worm-y than it was.

Loved the Killing Moon, but the rest never really got there. I liked the sound of it overall, but the rest of the songs were pretty forgettable. I suspect a few songs might grow on me after some more listens.

This journey is interesting as I hear precursors to a lot of stuff I like to listen to today. This sounds like 2000s indie stuff. It's so interesting what actually makes it out of a decade into pop culture because I never hear 80s' music that sounds exactly like some of the stuff I love today. Anyway it's good but not memorable. I like it better than the talking heads though.

Great memories thanks to Chris for introducing me to this band.

really enjoyed nocturnal rain when i was younger 3.5

I remember them from the Lost Boys soundtrack. Solid sound.

Some interesting points, but definitely not the greatest album ever.

Sounds a lot like the pixies.

Was really looking forward to this album. Very familiar with a lot their songs and feel like this is an underrated band. However, this isn't their best stuff, but I enjoyed all the same. The Killing Moon is a very good song and I liked Silver too. The entire album was good, just not great. After both Joy Division and Echo, the genre it kicked into left me listening for the rest of the day. After both, the song that came on very early is Requiem by Killing Joke. A very good song. Recommend checking out some songs by Wire too. Anyway, good album, but they have better. 3

3.5 A perfect segue from Joy Division. Having now listened to two of these guys’ albums, I gotta say they’re probably one of the most slept-on acts of the era. This album rivals the quality of their debut, an album I rated highly, though the production in particular is miles ahead here. Each song feels like a soundscape of gothic abstraction with the orchestral backdrop, and while that produces some very strong moments, it was a bit much for me at times and too same-y overall - I think I preferred the more stripped back approach of Crocodiles. Even if this one is a bit more theatrical and structured, fewer individual songs stuck out to me. The Killing Moon however is of course an all-time great track, and for me will always be tied to the opening bicycle scene of Donnie Darko, which I’ve always thought was a really effective choice for establishing the tone of the movie in the first minute or so (why did they change it to INXS in the Director’s Cut??) Really good, but not my favorite of theirs. Will be listening to more!

Listened to on 3/6/23 3.5/5 Favorite song: seven seas I listened to this album twice and really enjoyed it although nothing stuck out - it just kinda flowed in the background

"McCulloch has cited...Leonard Cohen and particularly David Bowie as influences for his work. He has described Cohen's song "Suzanne" as "the perfect lyric with the perfect melody" and Bowie as "so influential and the greatest solo artist of the 20th Century in any walk of art" is something I found on Wikipedia and that's exactly what this album sounds like. Almost a 4.

Not really my thing, and the list is weighed down with albums like this, but at least this one has a theme it manages to stick to without becoming too repetitive.

Yet another 80s album

I’m definitely warming up to this album. It’s theatrical, quirky, fun, if a little mystifying. There are some genuinely really cool guitar licks and arrangement choices here. It manages to be pretty approachable and never corny, I don’t know how they’re pulling it all off. I’m impressed, having a good time the more I listen. 3/5

This failed to make much of an impact, but there's something awkward and geeky about Echo And The Bunnymen that makes them likeable.

Ocean man take me by the hand
