On the boring side
Bevel Gilberto Not my genre and, having listened to this, never gonna be. So to some people could be the greatest album of all time. But to me, it's a great cure for insomnia. Best Track - Close Your Eyes (finally woke me up a bit) Worst Track - Mais Feliz 3/10 as it must mean something to someone

Not my vibe
Gilberto has a nice voice but the music is very boring to me. I guess my streak of being pleasantly surprised by the jazz albums on this list had to end eventually
It's pleasant enough, whatever it is. Should it be on this list? Who knows. Actually I just read on the wiki article that producer Suba died from smoke inhalation while saving the newly recorded album from a studio fire. That is why it belongs on this list! Doesn't change the score though.
Very bossa nova. I don't hate it, but it is incredibly dull.

Little to slow but very easy to listen to
It's fine lounge music. I don't mind that I can't understand most songs. Bebel's voice is fine, but not superlative. It's fine for lounge music, but not much beyond that. Not something I would seek out as requiring my attention. I feel like there was a period in the mid-late '90s that made lounge music more mainstream, and this album feels like its at the tail end of that. Nothing standout, but serviceable for the time.

There was a lot of cool and interesting sounds on some of these tracks but I wasnt a huge fan of the vocal performances.
There are some strange choices on this list, but picking an album from the niece of Chico Buarque while simultaneously failing to include a single Chico Buarque album has to be the strangest of them all. Genuinely absurd, Construção in particular is easily one of the greatest albums I've ever heard and it's nowhere to be seen here. I live as far as possible from Brazil and even I am stupefied. It's like picking Jakob Dylan's The Wallflowers over Bob Dylan. Anyway, I get why this album was picked, it's a fresher and more modern take on bossa nova with its little electronic touches and lounge elements, but overall it's an unimpactful, inoffensive set of renditions that won't stick around in your memory for very long, other than a couple of great tracks.
This is okay for fancy restaurant patio music, but as an album, it just fades away eventually. I can't explain it much better than that. Favorite Track: "August Day Song".

Not for me
The agony continues, 450 in and worn out from 75% of these albums not being worthy of the Top 1001 title. It was surprising to learn this was a 2000 release, it sounds very dated. The album is kinda nice, a little bit like a Spanish Sade or something. Sultry but boring as hell. The switch between Spanish and English got old fast. It has good listener counts with no song under 1M listens. The two 'hits', "Samba Da Decao" (26M) and "So Nice (Summer Samba)" (16M) didn't stand out from the other songs in any discernible way. I just found this so boring and her vocals are just better than average. 2 stars

I generally enjoy jazzy bossanova on the background and this worked as such. However it didn't quite make me jam to the beat same way as for example Astrud Gilberto stuff does. Not bad but i don't feel the urge to listen to this again.
Nepo more of the same Astrid did it better; mix of languages gimmick which I suppose was a novelty at the time.
She has a nice voice but I found the majority of the songs fairly boring.
I always appreciate less conventional genres on this list but do so many of them have to be samba/bossa nova? This was just boring. The definition of elevator music.

This doesn't feel so much like bossa nova dragged to the modern age, as the modern age dragged to to 60s bossa nova. Do you know what I mean though? 'Samba Da Benção' (_Sunbathing Bent Cow_) certainly has some dreamy woodwind going on, adding a nice to hook to a somnolent opening track. Surprisingly 'August Day Song' (_Canção do Dia de Agosto_) exhibits some opening acoustic arpeggios that are not unlike Johnny Greenwood's work. In places the guitar feels like a slow motion Nick Drake. It's still bossa nova, but with some all too subtle departures from the usual. Despite some nice ongoing touches, whether that's the subtle strings on the title track which are like a seductive, cinematic score; or the quasi trip-hop textures of 'Lonely', it gravitates back to the platitudinous. This is my issue with the art form as a whole, which I find very limited in scope and apparently retreading the same chord progressions time and again. Not as monotonous as some of the bossa nova we've had, it does at least try in places to escape the beach bar, non-offensive aesthetic. Although not very hard.

This was OK, but I can't say there was much there that I liked. It had some interesting moments in the midst of something I found boring overall. It reminded me a bit of the Norah Jones album from a few weeks ago, where it sounded like something I'd enjoy for the few minutes I was inside a store but forget within a few minutes of walking out. I think this one had a little more life to it, though, which I appreciated. It wasn't a bad listen, but I probably won't be listening to this again. Overall: 2.4/5
At first I was pretty intrigued by another Brazilian artist because I’ve liked the samba on this list so far. But halfway through I had to ask myself, if it wasn’t in Portuguese, would this sound any different than a subpar coffee shop album? For me, it’s a no.

There's part of me that's glad that other genres and even different languages are being recommended because it shows this list is nothing if not diverse. This is something I never would have listened to before. Unfortunately it's something I'll probably never listen to again. Perfectly inoffensive music, nothing that much to write home about apart from a couple of ok tracks. I have to imagine that there's better recommendations than this in terms of foreign language or world music, there just isn't much to say here.
What? Atanarjuat 3: An iguana watches Iguazu? This album was so long and slow. I'm not even opposed to elevator music, I gave Aja 5 stars. This is just too much though.

Eh. Nepo baby does ode to father's legacy, poorly. Yawn. Good use of progressive and fusion elements. But in my heart of hearts this is spitting on the face of bossa nova and trying to adapt it to the 2000s. Good for normies. Not for I.
electronic downtempo meets bossa nova
This was an easy listen. Not bad, but not great. There were good moments, but a lot of meh. It started to feel like the same thing on loop. Bebel Gilberto is a good singer. As far as jazzy, sexy Brasilian wallpaper goes, I guess this is fine, but it doesn't exactly demand attention. Apparently the producer, 'Suba' Subotić tragically died while rescuing the tapes from a studio fire. I feel a bit like Colin Firth's character in Love Actually where the Portuguese maid jumps into a lake to save his novel while he desperately tries to convince her, despite them not speaking the same language, that it's really not worth saving.

Pues supongo que es un buen disco, pero tiene dos problemas: 1. Bossa hablando de lo que es la Bossa... Tema ya demasiado trillado y que aburre. La música autorreferencial debería estar prohibida. 2. Suena a tienda de Inditex. Que no es la culpa de la muchacha, pero soy incapaz de ponerme un disco así en casa porque suena genérico.
If this project were an art gallery with 1001 pieces, this one would be a small room covered in velvet wallpaper. It's luxurious but superficial, repetitive, and utterly inartistic.
This album is a little boring and slow. The kind of music they play at a high-end bar, where there’s a beautiful lady in a sparkly dress singing in a foreign language. I do love the singers voice although I can’t understand a word she’s saying (I don’t speak Portuguese). It’s not my style but I didn’t hate it, it’s okay. Standout songs: Sem Contencao Bananiera Close Your Eyes

A style of music that isn't my forte. This album is very calming and relaxing, but nothing too memorable to me. I think I miss out on a level of enjoyment from this because I don't speak the language the songs are in, but the sound itself sounds good. Very few of the songs are spoken in English, but I did quite enjoy them. My favorite song off this has to be Bananeira because it sounds really fun. Made me want to get up and dance even though I got no clue what she is saying. Don't see myself going back to this album, but I can see how someone would enjoy this. My top three songs are probably Bananeira, August Day Song, and So Nice (Summer Samba).

Spotify only had 7 of the 11 tracks making up this album, so I had to hunt around YouTube for the missing 4. A task made more annoying because I was hunting up music I didn't really have any particular desire to listen to. This isn't an awful album, just a dull one, which in some ways is a worse crime. Two stars.

This isn’t BAD, but it’s very smooth in an early 00s way that is disappointing for a type of music that should sound at least a bit sweaty.
I know very little about Bossa Nova music. I do know that Bebel Gilberto is a nepo baby and I did see a Laufey show once (it was very good), so there's that.

After the first song I felt I was going to be bored to death. Tung second song picked up but then only one other did that. I may not like bossa nova. So Nice was comedically bad.

Bossa nova and even some songs in a language I don't speak a word of is one of the things I love about this list. Something I would never have listened to if not for this. The sound is exactly what I think about when I hear the term bossa nova. She has a great voice but I don't really know when I would choose the genre to listen to in my daily life.

Por una parte, me alegra que haya algo más de Bossa Nova representada en este libro, en el que la música del mundo, por lo general, brilla por su ausencia. Pero, por otro lado, me ha parecido un álbum bastante aburrido. Tiene unos pequeños toques electrónicos interesantes, pero no lo suficiente como para atraparme ni para merecer formar parte de esta lista, en la que ya está el famosísimo álbum Getz/Gilberto. Demasiado lento y repetitivo; prefiero la música de su padre.
It's alright. Makes me feel like I've heard what I need to with this genre, and I now fully understand that while it has a few gems here and there, it's mostly not for me.
I found this to be excellent background music for a wine tasting event in Napa Valley. Nothing grabbed my attention except for Summer Samba, which has been done by musicians from Andy Williams to Dizzy Gillespie. If you’ve heard the Getz/Gilberto album, you get the idea.
Elevator music at it's finest
I enjoyed this while driving around in a rainstorm but that's about it. I'm not wild about bossa nova, especially played this straight. This being a fusion with electronic music is overstated. I'm sorry that guy died in a fire.

It was enjoyable enough, but not in English so no way to know if she’s singing nonsense or a nursery rhyme or something reasonable. Just at a huge disadvantage when it comes to comparing international albums.

Quite enjoyed this, but it gets a bit like eating too much cake after a while. Sweet and moreish for a bit, then a bit too sugary after a while. Expertly done, but could do with a bit more oomph / change of pace at times.

This is the album Suba died saving! I learned that tragic story when we listened to Suba’s album, not realizing that the recording he produced and saved, Bebel Gilberto’s “Tanto Tempo,” was yet to come on the list. Maybe I should have known - apparently working with Suba or being a Gilberto is the ticket to the 1001 for Brazilian bossa nova artists. Bebel’ dad João and his first wife Astrud are both on the list, so Bebel hits both requirements. I’m not sure what happened in the 30-plus years between João’s hits and Bebel’s in Brazilian music, but we can see an evolution (that may be largely due to Suba?) in style. Suba’s downtempo genre-bending makes a bit of a mark on “Tanto Tempo,” but if I’m remembering correctly I think I like his own album better than this one.
Nothing specific to dislike here. I just feel like I am on hold.
There are like 20 albums I can’t understand why we haven’t seen. But here’s some modern elevator music. Cool.

For anyone born or living in Brazil for the last 20 years, it's impossible to do not recognize some of these songs. They are the quintessential songs for elevators and supermarkets in the country. Now that I've listened to the full album, I can state that it's not much better than elevator songs, indeed. Best track: The jazzy "Close Your Eyes."

It was bossa nova from the early 2000s. It wasn’t bad, but it was just kind of there. Not sure what would make any bossa nova record “essential” other than some cool patina of age. A past era where I can’t remember the hipness. Anyway, this wasn’t it.
Fine, sounds like Brazilian lounge music
Something about bossa nova bores me pretty badly. I perpetually hear “The Girl from Ipanema”, which isn’t an entirely bad thing - just not compelling. However, I can appreciate the magic that exists in this album. The grooves are certainly a vibe and her silky smooth vocals make for a pleasant ambiance.
Album #9 - 2/5 I read a different review that called this "waiting room music," which felt accurate. I'm sure it's largely my own a lack of understanding & appreciation of the genre(s), but this album just wasn't for me. Not bad, but not something I would revisit.

My western imperialist music taste is showing. Samba all just sounds the same to me. This album has a mellow, chilling by the beach feel - perfect for an after party or having a mojito while on holiday. Is it good? Probably. Did I need to hear it? Maybe. Will I listen to it again? Only half of the album was on Spotify. Not a problem, I'll listen to what's available and if I like it, I'll seek out the rest on YouTube. I didn't have to seek out the rest on YouTube. As far as background lobby music goes, it's pleasant enough. Easy listening, chilled out Ibiza vibes. I've probably heard this many times in dentist waiting rooms over the years and don't actually realise. I didn't bother trying to find the other half of the album as it was all very similar to begin with and didn't think I would be missing out on anything special.

Skipping this lol. Listened to a few songs and found it to be literal elevator music like what we modeled elevator effort off of. So good but nothing special.

Interesting bossa nova type sound
I will admit, when I read "samba" and "jazz" as genres for this album, I was definitely expecting something a lot more uptempo and with Latin flair. This album leans a bit more ambient and the samba and jazz influences aren't nearly as prominent. There was nothing wrong with this album, but the "must hear before you die" aspect came into question for me for sure. It was okay, but definitely not that good. A high 2.-something; it kind of just faded into the background for me.

Extremely boring - don't quite think I needed to hear this one.
This was a hard record for me to focus on long enough to get through. I am really not a fan of bossa nova music, as I feel that it all sounds like elevator music or call centre hold music. That's not to say that the music is bad, it's just horribly bland to me. There is also the language barrier, where I can't even be enticed to listen by the lyrics. Overall, super bland. Not my kind of music at all. Favourite songs: Bananeira, Close Your Eyes, August Day Song, Sem Contencao Least favourite songs: Mais Feliz, Alguem 2/5

While this is a very well made, and terrifically performed record, the frequency in which I listen to bossa nova records is so miniscule that I will certainly forget this album well before the next time I get the itch.
Good voice and production. But I can only listen to this stuff for so long before it just sounds like a lounge act to me. It all just melded together as far as I could discern. There's a time and place for this, and this list isn't it.

I was excited about this at first but it really got boring to listen to.
Never heard of this artist before - seems like it was trying to encapsulate the bossa movement of the 60s that getz-gilberto, jobin, etc were popularizing in the Americas. Overall, enjoyed this breezy album. Liked August Day song and a few others but wouldnt have this as a required listening.
It's fine, but there are 1001 more accomplished and interesting singers and records from Brazilian artists than this one.
Felt fairly uninspiring, nice enough to listen to but found myself wanting to skip songs, will give it another listen as may have been in the wrong frame of mind for the genre

I can’t say I’m too familiar with bossanova as a genre, but this isn’t bad at all. Not really my thing in general though. Favorite song: Tanto Tempo (1st one?). 4/10
This was relatively pleasant to listen to, but almost instantly forgettable. Very hard to find the full version of the album too. It doesn't seem to be on Tidal at all, and Spotify has several songs as "unavailable".
The singing is good and the vibes are good on this one. It's just too mellow for me. I feel like this would be good music to study to or play in the background at a fancy black tie party. But when I actively listen to it I just grow bored.

Not clear why this album is included in the list. It is rather generic but very well-made background music, nice enough to get 3 stars, but somewhat ruined by the songs (partially) sung in English.

C'est pas que je trouve la samba mauvaise, mais c'est quand même un genre qui m'évoque toujours la musique d'ascenseur (ou <i>The Girl from Ipanema</i>, mais en moins bien). Y'a probablement de vraies profondeurs, mais j'arrive pas à aller au delà de ce qui me semble une surface désespérément lisse. <i>Sem contenção</i> et <i>Close your eyes</i> brisent un peu ça, mais les trois premières chansons c'est une seule et unique nappe de musique d'ambiance, et le reste de l'album pas bcp mieux.

Bebel has pedigree being the daughter of Joao Gilberto and step-daughter of Astrud Gilberto (who I think was better). She sings in the typical languid bossa nova style. So nice is the best song on the album and deservedly, her most famous. There’s nothing too offensive here, but it’s also lacking in passion, so overall this album is a bit too somnolent for me.
Nepotism on the list. Unfortunately, while Ms. Gilberto benefited from her father's connections, it does not translate to a memorable album. With a weak voice and uninteresting lyrics (for the English ones, others who speak Portuguese can judge on the others). This album is remarkable only in that she has made a lifeless samba record. Not even silky enough to be good background music.

This naturally wasn’t my favourite because I was unable to connect with it because it was a different language and all that but I thought that it was pretty and short.
I'm finding I can work well to this music... Yet I'm not going to be putting this on for active listening. I feel like I'm listening to a super-extended version of Girl From Ipanema - not necessarily a bad thing, just the mood. Soundtrack music? Feels like a lazy way out of describing it but while listening I'm not *really* listening, I feel like I should be watching some mid70s movie scene of a car with the top down and gently rolling across the Spanish coast, all the while not a lot is happening. Which sounds great... I just can't fully connect with it on an active level. 5/10 2.49 stars.

As much as I enjoy listening to albums from other cultures/languages, this one didn't do much for me at all. Felt too contemporary, like a Spanish-speaking version of some existing singer. Kind of just generic jazz vocal stuff. Can't say it was bad, but doesn't feel at all essential. What's the takeaway here? Apparently she's the nepo baby of Joao Gilberto, maybe that's why they felt compelled to put this on the list. Eh. Favorite tracks: Tanto Tempo, Samba e Amor. Album art: Woman's face, stencil outline or something. About as devoid of character as the music. 2.5/5
