Good voice and production. But I can only listen to this stuff for so long before it just sounds like a lounge act to me. It all just melded together as far as I could discern. There's a time and place for this, and this list isn't it.
I've had a couple of Samba records now and I'm digging it. Very relaxing and nice sounding.
Nice, smooth bossa nova music though I'm not quite sure why this album is so important that it needs to be on this list, there are others in the genre that are better than this album. Perhaps it's because Bebel is the daughter of Joao Gilberto?

Chill background music, a voice like caramel
Good listen for my morning commute, sure, but it was really just her droning over various samba beats.

I thought I was going to love this, but actually found it kind of boring. Her dad Joao was an absolute legend. Maybe the electronic textures over the bossa was a new/interesting sound but it kind of felt like poolside background music to me. Nothing super memorable. 2.5/3?
I was excited about this at first but it really got boring to listen to.
Never heard of this artist before - seems like it was trying to encapsulate the bossa movement of the 60s that getz-gilberto, jobin, etc were popularizing in the Americas. Overall, enjoyed this breezy album. Liked August Day song and a few others but wouldnt have this as a required listening.

Incredible, Gilberto's entire family is beyond talented
as someone from brazil im sad to read the reviews that deny this beautiful album simply because its not in english. i like the fact that bossa nova has really changed over the years, this is really groovy compared to the early bossa nova.

I really like this! Interesting year from which to include a Bossa nova vocal album like this. I'd imagine a 60's-70's one, but this is like a throwback that I never heard of. Oh, I didn't realize it was João Gilberto's kid! I'd say it's a 3.5 - 4 for me... dig it a lot as a chill out album. Well recorded and performed. Really like the voice and instrumentation.
Fantastic lazy Sunday morning sort of vibe going on with this album. Don't put it on and expect to be productive, unless sitting at home while sipping on a cup of hot coffee while reading the New York Times is what you consider being productive. I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting.
The super chill coffee house vibe and ethereal vocals make this a fantastic album. It perfectly fit my mood for the day.
I can’t say I’m too familiar with bossanova as a genre, but this isn’t bad at all. Not really my thing in general though. Favorite song: Tanto Tempo (1st one?). 4/10
This was relatively pleasant to listen to, but almost instantly forgettable. Very hard to find the full version of the album too. It doesn't seem to be on Tidal at all, and Spotify has several songs as "unavailable".

The singing is good and the vibes are good on this one. It's just too mellow for me. I feel like this would be good music to study to or play in the background at a fancy black tie party. But when I actively listen to it I just grow bored.

Absolutely gorgeous and perfect for this grey fall day. Super chill and not something I think I'd usually seek out but I'm really enjoying reveling in it. I'll have to explore more Brazilian music!
I liked it, it was pretty and had a good vibe to it. Not my favorite bossa nova of all time, I feel like there wasn't anything that hit me with the WOW aside from Bananeira. I'd listen again though it's pretty chill.

Bossa Nova is fun, although I was not huge about this. It was not bad, but I thought, overall, it was average. I wonder if this artist has any relation to the Gilberto from Getz/Gilberto.

Very smooth laid back album. The mix of latin and english works pretty weel. Instrumentally it's pretty good and she sings very soothing. 7 out of 10

As ever my radar for what makes 'good' Latin / bossa nova music is a bit limited - I can't even decide if the modern electronic elements are a help or a hindrance. All I know is that I tend to prefer the more upbeat bits and sometimes zone out during the mellow numbers. It's all a bit 'backgroundy' but mostly pleasant; I found more more to enjoy here than on the album that (I know now) her dad features on, 'Getz/Gilberto'. I'm gonna give this a nice neutral 2.5, rounded up.

Best Gilberto family album so far. More bossa nova, which I'm not the biggest fan of, but with a slight tinge of trip hop which kept it interesting throughout. Surprisingly interesting and tragic backstory on this one as well.
This artist literally died from saving this album for a fire... I'm glad she did. Nice "world" music that is a change of pace from modern American music 3.2

Bon. J'ai pas écouté en entier. C'est pas que je trouve la samba mauvaise, mais c'est quand même un genre qui m'évoque toujours la musique d'ascenseur (ou <i>The Girl from Ipanema</i>, mais en moins bien). Y'a probablement de vraies profondeurs, mais j'arrive pas à aller au delà de ce qui me semble une surface désespérément lisse. <i>Sem contenção</i> et <i>Close your eyes</i> brisent un peu ça, mais les trois premières chansons c'est une seule et unique nappe de musique d'ambiance, et le reste de l'album pas bcp mieux.
Un peu séduit par l'idée du mix bossa + électro, et initialement content d'écouter qqch de différent dans ces albums proposés, mais finalement bof

Wow love this so much, never heard of Bebel Gilberto and haven't actually listened to much Brazilian music in general. I love her voice it's such a sexy album. Particularly loved the more ambient tracks and also Bananeira is really fun. Super relaxing and beautiful.
I thought this was so beautiful and soothing. Some of it did remind me of the Sims music too. I could picture listening to this on a beach bar somewhere hot. Gorgeous guitar playing

Bebel's vocals are warm and the sound is so clean it sounds like you are listening on a $50,000 sound system rather than my 20 year old NAD. This part of Bossa Nova's royal family is gently fusing bossa nova with electronic. It's too bad the 1001 didn't spread its wings a little further away from the family tree and have music that stretched deeper into electronic with bands like Bossacucanova. Given that we are over 900 days into this, I doubt we will be getting into such bands or other Brazilian genres such as Brazilian country called Sertanejo that was popular with the non-mainstream types the last time I was there. I digress. Tanto Tempo is a good and I will listen to it more in the future
She's definitely a chip off the old block, embracing a style that her father pioneered, but overall it's a bit to down tempo for me.
Bebel has pedigree being the daughter of Joao Gilberto and step-daughter of Astrud Gilberto (who I think was better). She sings in the typical languid bossa nova style. So nice is the best song on the album and deservedly, her most famous. There’s nothing too offensive here, but it’s also lacking in passion, so overall this album is a bit too somnolent for me.

19th July 2023 Listened on the drive in to the office with Jen. Book club in trendy Paddington bar in the evening. Perfect for an early morning sunny drive, chilled bossanova. 3.5 if I could.
Hard to find the full album of this but really enjoyed as much as I could get to - sounded in parts 60s, 80s, 90s... Air, Bossa nova, jazz
Nepotism on the list. Unfortunately, while Ms. Gilberto benefited from her father's connections, it does not translate to a memorable album. With a weak voice and uninteresting lyrics (for the English ones, others who speak Portuguese can judge on the others). This album is remarkable only in that she has made a lifeless samba record. Not even silky enough to be good background music.
Oh that voice. So smooth, so sensual, just beautiful. Not exactly my style of music but I can really appreciate her talent. I really enjoyed listening to this. 4 stars.

Many lovely songs that made me relax and reflective. Gilberto’s beautiful voice is breathy but rich. I like the traditional sounds with touches of today’s electronic textures. Very enjoyable with so many great musicians. After a few listens, only Close Your Eyes became skippable for me. My kids immediately liked Bananeira. Me too but it’s so catchy that it kept me up one night as an ear worm.

Luck of the draw I'd just recently been served an album by the producer Suba who died as the result of a fire during the production of this album. This is good, and more accessible for me than some of the South American music I've heard on this list.
She has a lovely voice and it was a very soothing listen but very elevator music-y and nothing particularly memorable

This naturally wasn’t my favourite because I was unable to connect with it because it was a different language and all that but I thought that it was pretty and short.
I'm finding I can work well to this music... Yet I'm not going to be putting this on for active listening. I feel like I'm listening to a super-extended version of Girl From Ipanema - not necessarily a bad thing, just the mood. Soundtrack music? Feels like a lazy way out of describing it but while listening I'm not *really* listening, I feel like I should be watching some mid70s movie scene of a car with the top down and gently rolling across the Spanish coast, all the while not a lot is happening. Which sounds great... I just can't fully connect with it on an active level. 5/10 2.49 stars.

…and now I'm pregnant. Amazing album. For a Y2k release, this could be right out of the 50's / 60's with a Sinatra / Gilberto feel. Babel Gilberto does to Samba and other afro-cuban styled music what Amy Winehouse did with American Soul - took it from the past, put a little modern polish on it and succeeded. 4/5.

Some decently good songs but mostly boring and nothing special. Suba should not have died for this album. FS: Close Your Eyes, So Nice
It's light and... "frothy." I felt like it was a nice iced drink when you're sitting by the pool. It wasn't deep, but it was satisfying in the moment. And really, that's all you really need, right? Probably my favorite track of the album was "Lonely." I thought the driving rhythm of the song complemented her singing well. The only thing was that it was satisfying in the moment, but it was fairly forgettable afterward. The songs didn't stick with me too much afterward. But when you go for light and frothy, that's what happens, you know?
Samba de Bencao and the title track are really lovely and sultry. It's clear how good Gilberto's vocals are from these two songs, and Suba's production is pretty slick too (maybe more credit should be given to the musicians?). I was also a big fan of Mais Feliz (like Shirley Manson and Garbage sultry), Bananeira (great beats), Samba e Amor (great vocals). I'm less of a fan of the songs sung in English because I then realize how bad the lyrics are. August Day Song has some great instrumental again, but then words such as "I like to sing and do these things with you..." Ugh, tragic. Ditto So Nice ("someone to hold me tight that would be very nice" - yeesh) and Close Your Eyes. Sem Contencao also sounded a little too simple. There were times that I was creeping towards a 4 but then other times I was reminded how this album was missing some substance. Perfect for beside-the-pool listening and as much as I like her voice and some of the compositions, I don't think I'm pining to hear more.
This album didn't do much for me on the first listen - decent background music - but I found myself enjoying it on subsequent listens. Nice voice, enjoyable music, and excellent musicianship. Not anything I think I'd go out of my way to hear again, but certainly not bad. Songs that caught my attention: August Day Song, Mais Feliz, Alguem, Lonely (real nice mysterious vibe), Bananeira.

No doubt that this is a musical family. I’m huge bossa nova fan, but if you would have described a “bossa nova, drum machine, new age” album, I would have been skeptical. All of the elements blend together in a really tasteful way that shows considerable restraint for the time. A treat to listen to.

June 7, 2023 (late night, trying to write a theatre piece) HL: “Samba de Bencao”, title track, “Close Your Eyes”, “Sem Contencao” 💃🏿 It sounds like purgatory. No I cannot fully explain what I mean by that Even the brassy ending song “Close Your Eyes” doesn’t give much closure. It traps that carnaval energy in a loop. Is that just a feature of bossa nova then Fave track has to be the intro, probably the best fusion of spooky electronica & serene acoustic guitar 3.5
I guess it's OK background music material, but seriously: I fail to see the point of including this album in this list. What's so special about it?
While it certainly wasn't some of the UK rock/punk/pop we have had to endure, it was still a middle of the road album for me.
As much as I enjoy listening to albums from other cultures/languages, this one didn't do much for me at all. Felt too contemporary, like a Spanish-speaking version of some existing singer. Kind of just generic jazz vocal stuff. Can't say it was bad, but doesn't feel at all essential. What's the takeaway here? Apparently she's the nepo baby of Joao Gilberto, maybe that's why they felt compelled to put this on the list. Eh. Favorite tracks: Tanto Tempo, Samba e Amor. Album art: Woman's face, stencil outline or something. About as devoid of character as the music. 2.5/5
Chill music. Great for having on while relaxing or cooking dinner. The only other Brazilian artists I know are Seu Jorge and Os Mutantes; this is much calmer than those other two.

It's very pretty. Lovely singing, really nice delicate instrumentation, but with lots of interesting layers. Some of these songs are definitely entering the rotation on my various 'chill' mixes.

If you like this just a littel bit, go listen to RED HOT +RIO (a compilation) or the all time classic album that will blow you away "Getz/Gilberto" . This album gives me hope for The List. ....which needs more variegation, World and more Varied (and female) voices, and less rancid rap, garage and punk. But hey, another time we can go down the allmusic ratings, or rolling stone lists, right? And this has been educative so far. Bebel. She was Eva in the film Rio, is a brazilian bossa nova figure, she is NOT descended from Astrid Gilberto, but IS descended from Brazilian guitarist / vocalist João Gilberto (Astrid's ex), and her mother was singer Miúcha. So, maybe we will hear the album "Getz/Gilberto" which has two of my all time favourite tracks. I'm off to Rio now....
I saw her about five years ago at Womad and it was pleasant enough, the wife nodded off and I think I went with one of the boys to get a tofu burger so you know...She did a lovely cover of Neil's Harvest Moon I do remember that. This somniferous snoozefest, this languid lounge music, who needs sleeping pills or podcasts about precipitation when you can pop Bebel on to set you adrift on memories bliss of days long gone, the days before you were stuck listening to records like this. zzzzzzzzzzzzz When I woke back up after a lovely little snooze, she was still singing so I went and read her Wiki notes and they reckon she's sold 2.5 million records. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I enjoyed this. It could have been recorded 40 years earlier, when bossa nova was first a world-wide phenomenon. Sure, some aspects of the instrumentation might be more contemporary, but essentially this is a bossa nova record. Take So Nice - it was one of the biggest-selling bossa tunes of the 60’s (under the title Summer Samba) - the English lyrics were supplied by Norman Gimbel, who also did the translation for The Girl From Ipanema & would later write the lyrics of Killing Me Softly. To me, Gilberto’s version sounds like it comes straight out of the 60’s, like so much of this record. And that’s fine, although the tunes I enjoy most are the handful that stylistically veer elsewhere - the beats in August Day Song are infectious; the pace of Sem Contencao ; on Alguem, she reminds me of Sade at her best. I was not familiar with her work at all, but I thought this was a great listen.
Pleasant, samba-flavoured jazz-lite. I like her voice, but this is hardly the most inspired album. Is it significantly different from other samba albums from the previous four decades? Why did they choose THIS album? It doesn't really have anything to particularly recommend it, other than some occasional Portishead-like loops and synths. Soporific. Except Bananeria. I like that song, although exactly why we need another cover of this song from 1975, I don't know. Did not hate, but seems like a pointless inclusion on this list.

i went to extraordinary lengths to pirate, upload and listen to this mediocre record, terrible all over it sounds nice, pretty, and all over nothing really happens. this can be made to happen in a glorious way, which it almost does, but does not. they should have put 'mundo civilizado' by arto lindsay on the list instead

Creo que é un álbum moi creativo e aunque prefero os álbums tradicionais, a fin de todo, o creatividade vale moito no mundo músico. Tambén, para me, é un poco "easy listening" nunha xénero con influencia amplio do jazz.

Album is good, though I think it's importance must lie in its' dreamy reintroduction of Bossa Nova music into the popular lens in Europe and America. The most interesting things I learned: the Serbian producer of the album died due to smoke inhalation after a studio fire, and that Gilberto is a Brazilian Bossa Nova dynasty musician.
hypnotic and soothing, her voice is like butter. songs mostly in spanish, but occasionally in english. i could listen to this and fall asleep (and i mean that as a compliment).
If I were sitting in a small cafe by a riverwalk in a foreign land, I'd love this album. Basically anywhere else in my life it's reasonable background music, but I'm not going to get excited about it.
This music brings me back to Barcelona or even Paris. Great background music but I don’t think I’ll be listening much in my every day life but that’s alright. This gave me a little mini vacation if only in my mind. Just light, breezy, chillin’, goodness.

Well, this was a first for me in that there's a song on this album I couldn't find on Spotify nor YouTube. So for now I'll just have to skip it. That song is Alguem. There were a couple of covers on YouTube but I refuse to listen to those as I feel it takes away from what listening to this album should be. However, I can safely say I'll be seeking this out in physical form. This was a beautiful album. A beautiful mix of Bossa Nova, Future Jazz and Downtempo. Even felt a bit of DnB energy from Lonely. Fun, mostly upbeat and tuneful. I wish for a warmer day to review this, quite honestly. Favourite: Lonely
Two days ago I got her dad, now her! I was excited for this but honestly, it really fell flat for me. However, I absolutely LOVED Bananeira, so that raises it up a star.
It is very interesting to hear this right after listening to her father. While that record had a staleness to it, this is much more reminiscent of Norah Jones and a soothing coffee shop type record. I liked.

The first thing I learned about Bebel Gilberto is that she's the daughter of bossa nova pioneer, Joao Gilberto. Joao was heralded as the father of bossa nova, which would make Bebel either its sister, or the genre incarnate. Either way, it's in her blood... and 2000's "Tanto Tempo" proves it track by track. Raised on bossa nova music her entire life (naturally), Bebel Gilberto had been releasing music for fourteen years by the time "Tanto Tempo" rolled around. It was her third full-length studio album, and saw her become one of the biggest selling Brazilian artists of the 20th century. Despite this, it's extremely difficult to find online in the UK, and I've had to resort to listening to a cover of "Alguem" because there's no trace of it. If I ever finish the rest of the 1001 list, my final regret will be never hearing the original "Alguem". If you're reading this, HELP! "Tanto Tempo" is often billed as bossa-nova meets electronica, but on first listen the electronic elements are scarcely noticeable. At best, they contribute really well to the ambience: some whooshing, whistling synths turn "Mais Feliz" into an elegant beguiling soundscape. A couple of programmed drum beats crop up here and there, but they're subtle enough to not detract from the bossa nova feel. They've just allowed critics ever since to contextualise "Tanto Tempo" vaguely within trip-hop and downtempo. Instead, "Samba de Bencao" typifies the sound of the album: bossa nova guitar rhythm, whispering saxophone and twinkling vibraphone, percussion barely kept above brushes on the snare. There are no crescendos so much as waves gently breaking on the shore. Tying it all together is Gilberto's vocal: velveteen smooth, intimate and casual. Over the course of the album, she slips between Portugese and English (singing both beautifully, but hearing the lyrics in English somehow diluted the album's beauty. Imagine if, instead of birdsong, we heard their actual calls to one another of "Ey up! I done a shit! Fancy a shag and some worms?" Not as lyrical, is it? Anyway, that's my problem, certainly not Bebel's). Once the mood is established in "Samba de Bencao", it remains much the same across the rest of the album- sedate, sultry and smooth- until we reach a couple of surprises. First, "Sem Contencao" livens things up with a light samba, retaining the same instrumentation while upping the tempo a little. I appreciated the change in tempo, but on the whole this didn't quite work for me: too breezy to be exciting, but too energetic to be blissful. Later, "Bananeira" and "Close Your Eyes" are two shocks coming at the eleventh hour: out-and-out drum beats, a full brass section, lively samba. These feel as though they shouldn't work, particularly when the soporific, skeletal "Samba e Amor" sits between them. But, while bossa nova purists may well balk at it, against the odds I found myself grooving away contentedly. "Tanto Tempo" is not something I'm likely to revisit often (mainly because it's so bloody hard to find), but it's been a relaxing Friday afternoon listening to bossa nova incarnate. And western pop fans rejoice: "So Nice (Summer Samba)" was also covered by Baby Spice herself, Emma Bunton. Hurrah!
An album that is new to these eyes and ears, Tanto Tempo is a smooth, silky and sweet collection of 21st Century bossa nova bangers from Ms. Bebel Gilberto, whose name bores resemblance to another bossa nova great but doesn't compare with her beyond those connections. This is a fine debut album as well, one that shows the stylings of a vet in the making despite what it seems. Seek this one out. Favorites: Samba Da Bencao, Tanto Tempo, Sem Contencao, Mais Feliz, So Nice (Summer Samba), Lonely, Bananeria, Close Your Eyes.
neat, not for me

I remember clearly when this album came out. As a fan of bossa nova and her father João Gilberto, I was definitely interested. I read reviews and planned to buy it...and evidently didn't. This was quite a lovely update of the bossa nova into a 21st century feel. It's wonderful to revisit such a great version of "Summer Samba," one of my all time favorite songs. It was quite perfect for a first walk outside on a sunny, crisp day after a long, cold winter. This was lush and lovely.
I can hear Rio’s beaches calling. I think that the listening experience was enhanced by the non-English language lyrics.

There’s noticeable Brazil representation on this list, and I’m for it! This is a lovely listen that was just perfect for my evening. There’s a lot of the classic bossa nova/samba sound with some modern twists nestled in there. It all works wonderfully.
Beautiful voice but found the album boring overall. I could imagine this playing in the hotel lobby or restaurant of a resort. It's pleasantly inoffensive but nothing I'd ever seek out.

Not even sure how to class this? It put me in mind of the music I’d be forced to listen to on a cruise liner each night. Inoffensive, but dull. Not for me.
This ain't it
Okay I’ll be honest - I made it halfway through before I felt the need to listen to something else. It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s just that I’m typical a lyric listener and I was on the bus, so it wasn’t really the ‘vibe’ for me to ignore that and just dance or enjoy it sonically. WOOPS!
Not a bad samba album. Samba isn't necessarily my favorite, but this was enjoyable.

I didn't dislike this album but also don't really see why it's included on this list. It just feels like very run-of-the-mill bossa nova/easy listening music. Sounds like something you'd hear in a Starbucks or an elevator. That sounds harsh but again, this isn't horrible, just unremarkable. Standout Tracks: N/A

Oh, my, what a VOICE. When vocalists have the talent and training to use their voice as a true instrument, it's always so impressive to my ear. The musical style of the songs on this album suits her perfectly, and it is a genuine pleasure to listen to her sing and to the musical accompaniments. This is great.
This was pretty chill bossa-nova with a modern twist, combining some trip-hop beats. Nothing super exciting or special with this one, but quite pleasant throughout while it was on. I preferred the slower songs here compared to the dancier cuts like the closing track, which was the worst song here in my opinion. Chill. 6,9/10

It was ok. Definitely not memorable. I think this is the third or fourth bossa nova album on the list while other genres are completely ignored. I'm getting a bit annoyed. 2.5 stars

Unbeliberly boring
This is a fine album, kind of in that downbeat style of the early 2000s.
I don't know, I feel like I'm missing the cultural relevance here to really fully appreciate it. There is nothing wrong with it, but not really anything right either.
70/100: This will be a hard album for me to review. In nearly all of my previous reviews, I at least have some sort of context that I can bring to the table with respect to the genre. With this album, though, I have never listened to any samba; therefore, have had a difficult time deciding how to tackle this review. Relativity has always aided my reviewing process. Oftentimes consciously, always unconsciously, I compare albums to others I have heard in the same or similar genre. This isn't really possible for this album, so I guess the best approach is to genuinely review how much I objectively like this album in a vacuum. With that being said, I did really like this album; however, I don't really see myself actively seeking it out again. It was nice to listen to while reading a book on my flight to Newark, but I don't see it being as enjoyable in other contexts.

Much of this is especially enjoyable downtempo samba; however, I don't really like listening to eleven tracks of especially enjoyable downtempo samba in a row.
Very mellow, seductive and sexy. Like a more playful bossa nova Sade. Bebel has a sweet, soulful voice. Bananeira (live) was most upbeat. Note: Amazon wouldn't let me play the album so I made a playlist from live versions and songs found on compilations.
Really good honestly, loved the instrumental and vocal delivery
What a pain in the arse it was, getting this album to play in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (a nation which, thanks to Brexit, may only last 10 more years). It turns out the fucker was blocked over here, and I've had to use a sodding proxy in order to listen to it on Youtube. I know it's not the most arduous travail in the world, but it still felt like an especially sharp bit of grit in the Vaseline. Still, thanks for the peeps on the Reddit forum who helped me suss out what to do. Bebel Gilberto is a Brazilian bossa nova singer, born into bossa nova regality. Her father, João Gilberto, was one of the central architects of bossa nova, the man who clocked that samba didn't require intense performances when amplifiers were used, and added gentle, subtle harmonies and syncopations. You will have clocked that I am liberally quoting Wikipedia. I know nothing about samba, bossa nova, or whatever this genre is. I can only tell you what the album meant to me. And I'm pleading the fifth again. I don't speak Portuguese, so I can't comment on the lyrics. Are they the most heartrending evocations of saudade, or are they about her lack of opinion over corned beef sandwiches? Not a Scooby Doo. Musically, it sounds fine as inoffensive wallpaper, but the first five songs blended indistinguishably, and I couldn't tell you what identity this album had. With the sixth tract Alguem (an unnecessary mixture of albumen and glue), there's a drum machine involved, and it sounds like a bossa nova track with a drum machine. So Nice (Summer Samba), is a samba standard with English lyrics, and I found myself wondering if one can hear such standards with newness. Can you hear My Way without imagining the legions of bores convincing themselves that a drinking problem and a stained jacket (suit or leather) makes them rebels and iconic iconoclasts? The latter half is prima facie more interesting, in that Gilberto continues with more contemporary instrumentation. But what is this electronica in service to? That you can play bossa nova with a synthesizer? Is that a revelation worthy of whatever John wrote all that Biblical trippery? I suppose that's a mite churlish of me, but I was not astonished at any moment. Tanto Tempo sounds fine yet unremarkable, competent yet modest. An aficionado or aficionada of this music may have more to say, and may well rebuke me for missing so many of the album's facets and vistas, but I should only be honest in what I felt. "Tanto Tempo" is an album by Brazilian bossa nova singer Bebel Gilberto, daughter of the famous Brazilian guitarist, singer and composer João Gilberto. Bebel came from a family of musicians and singers, was born in New York City and raised in Mexico and Rio de Janeiro. I think this background adds to the variety of music here, classified as bossa nova, future jazz and downtempo. I found her voice and the music somewhat similar to Sade. This album was produced by Serbian Suba who died from smoke inhalation saving the recorded album in a studio fire. The album opens up with a cover of the Vinicius de Moraes' sung "Samba da Bênção." Both Gilberto's voice and the music is sultry. An immediate thought of Sade. Sung in Portuguese. A slower bossa nova beat. Jazzy with horns. She gets a flowing groove going with "August Day Song" mixing English and Portuguese. Nice tightness between the acoustic guitar and drums. The percussion adds a different beat to "Algeum." More of a chill atmosphere. "Lonely" is eclectic and peppy. Encroaching on modern EDM territory. May be in it. "Bananeira" begins with a funky groove and horns, hey a 70's-era song. She is almost rap-singing. As the song progressed, I realized this sounded more like Stereolab. My favorite song on the album. "Close Your Eyes" ends the album in club-like fashion. A more fast-paced bossa nova beat. Horns. Definitely the most dance-able of the songs. A nice closer. I liked this album: the way it varied: from bossa nova beats to funk to edm/chill-like to clubby. If you're a fan of Sade's music and especially her voice, you'll also like this.

Bossa nova/lounge jazz - the kind of thing you would hear in a lounge bar on an expensive Cuban resort. Probably good weekend or evening music.

This album was relaxing and very nice to listen to, but I’m not hearing much in the way of pushing the genre forward. Gilberto’s father was instrumental in blending Brazilian music and jazz together but I’m not getting much in the way of anything new from this album. I’m stilling giving it three stars because I enjoyed it.

Favourite song: Bananiera One for the karaoke: Bananiera One for the car: Bananiera Around 2 minutes 18 seconds in to the 2nd song, for a short while, it clicked for me and I could understand Portuguese. Happened on and off throughout the album and I cannot explain it. Like - I know the title of the song translates to August Day Song, but how? Also - Bananeira. Enough said.
Fuck this album. Should of left it in the fire and jibbed it right off. Not on Spotify so I had to go and find each song on YouTube and it it disconnected me from fifa. Today can fuck off. Can’t wait to hear Morrissey tomorrow because it will cheer me up.

This album honestly didn't do too much for me at all.
It was ok. Brazilian samba, bossa nova etc. trying to emulate and indeed covering Sergio Mendez, but not as good imho.

My aural palette isn't sophisticated enough to distinguish any particular Bossa Nova song from The Girl from Ipanema. That said, I always love the grove. This album could play on repeat in every elevator and supermarket for the rest of time and I'd be happy.
I'm not a huge fan of this genre of music in general, but this is a very good example of it. Smooth vocals and excellent orchestration make for an extremely relaxing experience.

Another slightly odd choice as far as Brazilian music goes. Or at least so it seems to me, unfamiliar with the music but listening to this entirely accessible take on bossa nova. The production elevates it by the right number of inches. Diverse styles in the back meld into something recognizable, while the sequencing moves us from warm vinyl to a relatively energetic finale.
Love Bossa Nova. Interesting modern production. I like some of it, especially the more traditional sounding.

Suprisingly annoying. Though there is a mixture of portuguese and english language tracks, the lyrics are so simple and repetitve, that they quickly become irritating... feeling like they are one note songs with a single repeating word. By the time i hit bananeira... i was ready for it to be over.
Suba, the producer of this smooth, cool, down tempo album died while saving the newly recorded album from a studio fire!!! I mean, I love it, it's sumptuous and sexy but I wouldn't risk my life for it.

Really enjoyed this album as background music while working. The story about someone dying in a fire to save the album is wild, I liked it - but not enough to run into a burning building.
Quite pleasant. If I was in a cocktail lounge and the band was doing this, I would be happy to sit and order a few drinks and enjoy.
