Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Album is good, though I think it's importance must lie in its' dreamy reintroduction of Bossa Nova music into the popular lens in Europe and America. The most interesting things I learned: the Serbian producer of the album died due to smoke inhalation after a studio fire, and that Gilberto is a Brazilian Bossa Nova dynasty musician.
If I were sitting in a small cafe by a riverwalk in a foreign land, I'd love this album. Basically anywhere else in my life it's reasonable background music, but I'm not going to get excited about it.
It was ok, not my sort of thing
Two days ago I got her dad, now her! I was excited for this but honestly, it really fell flat for me. However, I absolutely LOVED Bananeira, so that raises it up a star.
Okay album, but not really for me. Felt like background music, didn't really have anything unique or mind-blowing. 6/10
Pretty good, Latin techno beats
Pretty good! Very chill. 6.5/10
Not on Spotify, not going looking
It was alright. It’s not really my thing but I didn’t absolutely hate it.
Okay I’ll be honest - I made it halfway through before I felt the need to listen to something else. It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s just that I’m typical a lyric listener and I was on the bus, so it wasn’t really the ‘vibe’ for me to ignore that and just dance or enjoy it sonically. WOOPS!
Not a bad samba album. Samba isn't necessarily my favorite, but this was enjoyable.
Very good. Must run in the family.
Good background music! Nothing too special for me here though; I prefer my Bossa Nova to be instumental
I feel like I've heard Summer Samba in many movies. Excellent soundtrack music.
I imagine that if I liked bossa nova more, this would have been a 4 or 5. As is, it's a perfectly good album
3 stars. I like bossa nova but this album doesn't really hook me. Something about the singing not being lively enough. It's nice, however.
Most of the songs didn't seem to be there but very nice chill music 👌
This was pretty chill bossa-nova with a modern twist, combining some trip-hop beats. Nothing super exciting or special with this one, but quite pleasant throughout while it was on. I preferred the slower songs here compared to the dancier cuts like the closing track, which was the worst song here in my opinion. Chill. 6,9/10
Pleasant enough. A bit lobbyesque but better lobby than EBTG
It was ok. Definitely not memorable. I think this is the third or fourth bossa nova album on the list while other genres are completely ignored. I'm getting a bit annoyed. 2.5 stars
Still not as into bossa nova as I wanna be
Nice chill vibes thus far. I do kinda like different languages some times, way more relaxing cause you don't care, its just sounds. Though it would be harder to get realllly into it I reckon. Didn't leave much of an impact, but decent 3
Interesting but didn’t move me enough to buy it.
nice but i’m probably not going to slap it on too often
Nothing to it, a soft guitar, hushed drums and a simple yet lovely voice. But the whole so much greater than the parts.
3,5 nice
This is a fine album, kind of in that downbeat style of the early 2000s.
I don't know, I feel like I'm missing the cultural relevance here to really fully appreciate it. There is nothing wrong with it, but not really anything right either.
70/100: This will be a hard album for me to review. In nearly all of my previous reviews, I at least have some sort of context that I can bring to the table with respect to the genre. With this album, though, I have never listened to any samba; therefore, have had a difficult time deciding how to tackle this review. Relativity has always aided my reviewing process. Oftentimes consciously, always unconsciously, I compare albums to others I have heard in the same or similar genre. This isn't really possible for this album, so I guess the best approach is to genuinely review how much I objectively like this album in a vacuum. With that being said, I did really like this album; however, I don't really see myself actively seeking it out again. It was nice to listen to while reading a book on my flight to Newark, but I don't see it being as enjoyable in other contexts.
Much of this is especially enjoyable downtempo samba; however, I don't really like listening to eleven tracks of especially enjoyable downtempo samba in a row.
Very mellow, seductive and sexy. Like a more playful bossa nova Sade. Bebel has a sweet, soulful voice. Bananeira (live) was most upbeat. Note: Amazon wouldn't let me play the album so I made a playlist from live versions and songs found on compilations.
What a pain in the arse it was, getting this album to play in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (a nation which, thanks to Brexit, may only last 10 more years). It turns out the fucker was blocked over here, and I've had to use a sodding proxy in order to listen to it on Youtube. I know it's not the most arduous travail in the world, but it still felt like an especially sharp bit of grit in the Vaseline. Still, thanks for the peeps on the Reddit forum who helped me suss out what to do. Bebel Gilberto is a Brazilian bossa nova singer, born into bossa nova regality. Her father, João Gilberto, was one of the central architects of bossa nova, the man who clocked that samba didn't require intense performances when amplifiers were used, and added gentle, subtle harmonies and syncopations. You will have clocked that I am liberally quoting Wikipedia. I know nothing about samba, bossa nova, or whatever this genre is. I can only tell you what the album meant to me. And I'm pleading the fifth again. I don't speak Portuguese, so I can't comment on the lyrics. Are they the most heartrending evocations of saudade, or are they about her lack of opinion over corned beef sandwiches? Not a Scooby Doo. Musically, it sounds fine as inoffensive wallpaper, but the first five songs blended indistinguishably, and I couldn't tell you what identity this album had. With the sixth tract Alguem (an unnecessary mixture of albumen and glue), there's a drum machine involved, and it sounds like a bossa nova track with a drum machine. So Nice (Summer Samba), is a samba standard with English lyrics, and I found myself wondering if one can hear such standards with newness. Can you hear My Way without imagining the legions of bores convincing themselves that a drinking problem and a stained jacket (suit or leather) makes them rebels and iconic iconoclasts? The latter half is prima facie more interesting, in that Gilberto continues with more contemporary instrumentation. But what is this electronica in service to? That you can play bossa nova with a synthesizer? Is that a revelation worthy of whatever John wrote all that Biblical trippery? I suppose that's a mite churlish of me, but I was not astonished at any moment. Tanto Tempo sounds fine yet unremarkable, competent yet modest. An aficionado or aficionada of this music may have more to say, and may well rebuke me for missing so many of the album's facets and vistas, but I should only be honest in what I felt. It's an okay album. NoRadio, signing off.
It’s fine when it’s on, but doesn’t really leave much to remember once it’s over. Part of that could definitely be me not understanding the lyrics though. The instrumentals are really beautiful and Bebel’s voice is decent but nothing incredible about this one. 6/10
"Tanto Tempo" is an album by Brazilian bossa nova singer Bebel Gilberto, daughter of the famous Brazilian guitarist, singer and composer João Gilberto. Bebel came from a family of musicians and singers, was born in New York City and raised in Mexico and Rio de Janeiro. I think this background adds to the variety of music here, classified as bossa nova, future jazz and downtempo. I found her voice and the music somewhat similar to Sade. This album was produced by Serbian Suba who died from smoke inhalation saving the recorded album in a studio fire. The album opens up with a cover of the Vinicius de Moraes' sung "Samba da Bênção." Both Gilberto's voice and the music is sultry. An immediate thought of Sade. Sung in Portuguese. A slower bossa nova beat. Jazzy with horns. She gets a flowing groove going with "August Day Song" mixing English and Portuguese. Nice tightness between the acoustic guitar and drums. The percussion adds a different beat to "Algeum." More of a chill atmosphere. "Lonely" is eclectic and peppy. Encroaching on modern EDM territory. May be in it. "Bananeira" begins with a funky groove and horns, hey a 70's-era song. She is almost rap-singing. As the song progressed, I realized this sounded more like Stereolab. My favorite song on the album. "Close Your Eyes" ends the album in club-like fashion. A more fast-paced bossa nova beat. Horns. Definitely the most dance-able of the songs. A nice closer. I liked this album: the way it varied: from bossa nova beats to funk to edm/chill-like to clubby. If you're a fan of Sade's music and especially her voice, you'll also like this.
Bossa nova/lounge jazz - the kind of thing you would hear in a lounge bar on an expensive Cuban resort. Probably good weekend or evening music.
pretty good flamenco-ish style music. probably would listen to it again. slows down around the title track which was abit more sultry but it picks up again after that
Nice, but a little predictable. Some songs are romantic and smooth, in Portuguese. They are the nice ones on this album.
Pretty and chilled bossa nova album. Really nice vocals. The producer of this record died rescuing the master tapes from a studio fire. That is commitment to a project. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Samba de Bencao Date listened: 22/10/22
This album was relaxing and very nice to listen to, but I’m not hearing much in the way of pushing the genre forward. Gilberto’s father was instrumental in blending Brazilian music and jazz together but I’m not getting much in the way of anything new from this album. I’m stilling giving it three stars because I enjoyed it.
Bossa Nova isn't for me, but she's got a great voice. Best track: Close Your Eyes
fine easy listening
4/12, 33%
I see the appeal, but not super my vibe.
very nice. 3/5
Another slightly odd choice as far as Brazilian music goes. Or at least so it seems to me, unfamiliar with the music but listening to this entirely accessible take on bossa nova. The production elevates it by the right number of inches. Diverse styles in the back meld into something recognizable, while the sequencing moves us from warm vinyl to a relatively energetic finale.
Love Bossa Nova. Interesting modern production. I like some of it, especially the more traditional sounding.
It's a cute album. duolingo. nothing to write home about.
3.4
Rating: 6/10
Really enjoyed this album as background music while working. The story about someone dying in a fire to save the album is wild, I liked it - but not enough to run into a burning building.
Quite pleasant. If I was in a cocktail lounge and the band was doing this, I would be happy to sit and order a few drinks and enjoy.
Muy relax
The nice thing about slower, stripped-down samba albums like this one is they allow me to realize how much Spanish I've forgotten since high school.
3.3 - Listening to this record reminds me of interacting with my wife’s extended family in Wisconsin. Everyone is so friendly and adept at making small talk. Should we grill out this evening? “That would be nice.” Maybe go over to the bar later and catch the game? “That would be nice.” Looks like we got another sunny day tomorrow. “That would be nice.” It’s comforting and quickly becomes sickening.
I really digged the first half of this album as a super chill, really relaxing and stimulating background jazz record. Then the second half of the album added annoying samba elements into the mix and that sort of ruined it for me. In particular, So Nice and Bananeira were so bad that I had to skip them. Those tracks alone are enough to bring this down from a solid 4 to a shaky 3.
Could not find this album on Spotify. Other tracks by her are not my cup of tea.
Warm, languid, elegant, easy on the ear. At a certain point it all starts to sound alike, but I enjoyed it. Fave Songs: Samba da Bênção, Mais Feliz, Tanto Tempo, Samba e Amor, Lonely
According to wikipedia, this record was saved from a studio fire by it's producer, Suba, who subsequently died due to smoke inhalation. What a story! What a blissful sound. Bebel Gilberto's take on bossa nova is uniquely hers, incorporating atmospheric elements to create the ultimate calming record. Every song is a pleasant listen, though the most notable one is the Summer Samba cover. Perhaps the songs could be more memorable, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Pleasant and enjoyable without being obtrusive. Could easily be a movie soundtrack, or a cool advert.
"August Day Song", "Tanto Tempo" o "Sem Contenção".
Cool, suave background music for a cocktail bar - the girl from Ipanema in a dozen samba variation. Very nice, but why is it on this list? It's background music.
Brazilian standards rebooted
Ok, nice listen but didn’t save any.
Easy listening background jazz, Tanto Tempo is always welcome, nothing wrong with it, time and a place but not right up my street as far as the genre goes. 3/5 as it commands respect.
It was alright but not what I’d usually listen to. 3*
She has a nice voice and the music is chill and relaxing, but it's a bit too easy listening for me.
Very listenable, but a little too subdued for me. As a debut, though, it is impressive.
A very pleasant album but it's background music. I feel like it should be playing in a nice cocktail lounge. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again. The 1/2 star option would be helpful here too. I'd like to give it 2.5 but because I don't dislike it, I'll round up instead of down.
Achieved what it sets out to do
Good genes at work here. This is the girl from Iponema I was promised.
I love a good samba. This didn't really blow my skirt up, but was still fun to listen to. I just kept hearing Girl From Ipanema.
It's a rather pretty album, and I like the subtle electronic touches.
Not my usual fare but this is great - perfect for a lazy summer day (which today isn't). Gentle bossa nova grooves combined with a fittingly perfect voice.
If it has been a while since being on a vacation, this album will remind you of that. Bebel Gilberto's easy-going, laid back sort of croon very easily slows things down. The contrast of that against an energetic yet balanced band is pleasing however, as the brain suggests conflict and satisfying resolution all at once. While this style of music is not the usual choice for this reviewer, it is very easy to respect and think fondly of the experience.
Great way to start the day.
Mucha samba
7,5
Cute
Ok album. Would only put it on as background dinner music.
This is one I'd never heard of before. It was fine.
I samba and bossa nova alot - this was nice. I wasn't as into it as some of my other Brazilian favorites though - Elis Regina, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Jorge Ben Jor.
Agradable
I did listen but don't really have any strong thoughts about it - perhaps I wasn't listening enough.
Didn’t seem groundbreaking in terms of sound. Can’t really comment on the lyrics.
Great sound and production, just not the most engaging songs for me. A little too slow to generate a thrill out of me the way traditional Irish or South African music does.
-Some kinda cool stuff happening in the background of "Samba Da Bencao" -I like the rhythm of the melody in "Sem Contencao." It sounds almost swung or something. (Maybe it is? Idk, I'm not a music expert) -"Bananeira" is quite upbeat, at least compared to the rest of the album -"Close Your Eyes" at like 0:27 sounds like a lowkey version of the background music in "Backside Wallrides and Rock 'N' Roll Inspiration: The Amazing Richie Jackson Skateboard Show Ep. 3" at like 4:00 -A lot of these just kinda sound like elevator music, or maybe lounge music with a lady singing in Spanish. Just not the most impressive thing I've listened to.
3/5
One word Wednesday: promedio.
This will be different, at least. Samba de Bencao - nice voice. August day song - Sem Contentao Mais Feliz So nice - somehow nice to have in English! Sad :-) Samba e Amour missing: Tanto Tempo - found this somewhere else. very nice. ALguem - cant find this one Lonely - done Bananeira - done : with a bit more beat to start. Nice change. Apparently about a tree. upbeat throughout close your eyes - doesn't do it for me at all. no return - on a special edition: a cover of the kinks apparently! slightly forced into a bossa nova thing - actually, theoriginal is bossa nova too! Show's how muh i know. In the end, I liked it a bit, but its not really for me.
Not a style I typically listen to but I really dig it. Chill but still makes you want to move a bit. She has a great voice.
Really solid, I liked everything I heard, but it didn't fully pull me in. This will likely be a forgotten gem for me.
Not awful
Easy to listen to and pretty but bored me stiff and I don’t think I’d listen to it again intentionally.
// Favs: — Score: 3.5/5
This album is a mellifluous murmur. You could hear this 200 years from now in a high class lounge, possibly in space. More specifically the first three tracks sound like someone took some ordinary Bossa Nova and remixed it by subtly distorting and manipulating the backing band. After that the album changes it up a little bit. Some fun songs near the end, e.g. Bananeira. Gilberto's voice is exposed and lovely and perfect throughout the album. Ultimately this album is limited by it's genre as lounge music, but it's wonderful for what it is.
This feels like it's combining some of the more traditional styles and rhythms of Brazilian music with some modern electronic instrumentation and sounds. It makes me feel like I'm in Europe for some reason.
This album feels like the kind of light jazz/downtempo that you heard in every coffee shop in the late ‘90s through mid 2000s. I’m not a samba expert but I feel like this is pretty good. It’s listenable and Bebel has a nice voice. I guess I’d give this 3 stars.
Was okay, half album missing on Spotify tho
Solid. Not my favorite but probably because I couldn’t understand the lyrics, and that is on me.
A fine voice but not much in the way of music that gets under the skin. Kind of sounds like what you might hear at a small live music venue. It was good background, mostly.
This was nice enough, but maybe a bit too mellow. I might listen again sometime, it's decent background music.
I listened to a few songs. I get it. Didn’t finish it, but I’m voting anyway!
I listened to Beautiful Reasons by The Cry instead
Nice and chill album. If you like bossa nova you will enjoy the melodies and her soothing voice. The English songs broke the spell a bit though.
Very calming and easy to listen to. She's got a beautiful voice - can't say that I'll return to this, but for casual listening I enjoyed it very much
.
Decent, but works mostly as background music for me.
Very relaxed, really lovely. The production dates it a bit.
decent background music
IDK what this is, but it's a ton of fun. I will listen to her again.
I'm a middle aged man who shouldn't use the word 'vibe' but...this whole album has one.
Peaceful but completely the wrong vibe for the time - 3/5 but could be a 4 on a different day
A potent atom of relaxation- I recognized her voice from a Buddha Bar album I use to zone out when studying
This walked the line between Nissa nova and 90s too much.
I couldnt find the album but the title track is a beautiful bossa nova piece. Gorgeous voice and nice guitar style.
Nice enough but something I'd listen to again unless I'm hosting a tapas night
Groovy. Bananeira is a BOP
Even thought bossa nova is a form of jazz I don't think I'm a fan. It's weird, it doesn't sound bad but I wanted to stop midway through the album... I soldiered through it and it got better later but it wasn't easy.
Fun and snazzy
Surprising mix of latin and electronica. Like it.
Generally mellow, but some surprisingly punchy songs, too
Not much of the album on Spotify but liked what I heard
I'm not a fan of anything here. Three songs and I'm out.
1.91
I can appreciate some of the grooves, but this is not really for me.
Was nice to have on in the background but nothing blew me away.
this is just generic elevator music 2/5!
This has ingredients that are interesting, but something about it just doesn't pop. I find my focus drifting, which puts it solidly in the category of background music. I could see this working on a Sunday morning making coffee and a great breakfast.
I really do get it, but this style of music just isn't for me. Was just never inspired to listen to this, even though I had the whole weekend.
So not my jam.
Not feeling this, but I am sure it is significant to some. 2.5/5
2.5/5
Completely disagree with Kevin... This is much more Sunday morning music, not Saturday morning. 2.5.
On the boring side
Bevel Gilberto Not my genre and, having listened to this, never gonna be. So to some people could be the greatest album of all time. But to me, it's a great cure for insomnia. Best Track - Close Your Eyes (finally woke me up a bit) Worst Track - Mais Feliz 3/10 as it must mean something to someone
Unknown artist. Listenable but not my type of music. OK album.
Gilberto has a nice voice but the music is very boring to me. I guess my streak of being pleasantly surprised by the jazz albums on this list had to end eventually
It's pleasant enough, whatever it is. Should it be on this list? Who knows. Actually I just read on the wiki article that producer Suba died from smoke inhalation while saving the newly recorded album from a studio fire. That is why it belongs on this list! Doesn't change the score though.
Very bossa nova. I don't hate it, but it is incredibly dull.
kinda dull ngl
Average
Little to slow but very easy to listen to
It's fine lounge music. I don't mind that I can't understand most songs. Bebel's voice is fine, but not superlative. It's fine for lounge music, but not much beyond that. Not something I would seek out as requiring my attention. I feel like there was a period in the mid-late '90s that made lounge music more mainstream, and this album feels like its at the tail end of that. Nothing standout, but serviceable for the time.
Not for me
There was a lot of cool and interesting sounds on some of these tracks but I wasnt a huge fan of the vocal performances.
There are some strange choices on this list, but picking an album from the niece of Chico Buarque while simultaneously failing to include a single Chico Buarque album has to be the strangest of them all. Genuinely absurd, Construção in particular is easily one of the greatest albums I've ever heard and it's nowhere to be seen here. I live as far as possible from Brazil and even I am stupefied. It's like picking Jakob Dylan's The Wallflowers over Bob Dylan. Anyway, I get why this album was picked, it's a fresher and more modern take on bossa nova with its little electronic touches and lounge elements, but overall it's an unimpactful, inoffensive set of renditions that won't stick around in your memory for very long, other than a couple of great tracks.
This is okay for fancy restaurant patio music, but as an album, it just fades away eventually. I can't explain it much better than that. Favorite Track: "August Day Song".
i want to trust this book that it provided the best in class for this jandra but i don't
Not for me
The agony continues, 450 in and worn out from 75% of these albums not being worthy of the Top 1001 title. It was surprising to learn this was a 2000 release, it sounds very dated. The album is kinda nice, a little bit like a Spanish Sade or something. Sultry but boring as hell. The switch between Spanish and English got old fast. It has good listener counts with no song under 1M listens. The two 'hits', "Samba Da Decao" (26M) and "So Nice (Summer Samba)" (16M) didn't stand out from the other songs in any discernible way. I just found this so boring and her vocals are just better than average. 2 stars
It’s nice but not my bag of tea
don’t really find anything here as a “new” take on samba. still pleasant overall
This one sounds exactly how I would expect a Brazilian Bossa album to sound. Unforrunately, it doesn't add anything new to the genre, and there are no real hit ... so I'd rather listen to the classics.
well it's good, but not my thing. it was kind of boring to me
Brazilian Bar-Blues.
Xanax
Ok background music
Muy repetitivas las canciones
..
Couple good songs, wouldn't go back to listen to anything though.
I generally enjoy jazzy bossanova on the background and this worked as such. However it didn't quite make me jam to the beat same way as for example Astrud Gilberto stuff does. Not bad but i don't feel the urge to listen to this again.
Nepo more of the same Astrid did it better; mix of languages gimmick which I suppose was a novelty at the time.
She has a nice voice but I found the majority of the songs fairly boring.
I always appreciate less conventional genres on this list but do so many of them have to be samba/bossa nova? This was just boring. The definition of elevator music.
I didn't particularly enjoy this, I don't think it was really for me.
2 1/2
This doesn't feel so much like bossa nova dragged to the modern age, as the modern age dragged to to 60s bossa nova. Do you know what I mean though? 'Samba Da Benção' (_Sunbathing Bent Cow_) certainly has some dreamy woodwind going on, adding a nice to hook to a somnolent opening track. Surprisingly 'August Day Song' (_Canção do Dia de Agosto_) exhibits some opening acoustic arpeggios that are not unlike Johnny Greenwood's work. In places the guitar feels like a slow motion Nick Drake. It's still bossa nova, but with some all too subtle departures from the usual. Despite some nice ongoing touches, whether that's the subtle strings on the title track which are like a seductive, cinematic score; or the quasi trip-hop textures of 'Lonely', it gravitates back to the platitudinous. This is my issue with the art form as a whole, which I find very limited in scope and apparently retreading the same chord progressions time and again. Not as monotonous as some of the bossa nova we've had, it does at least try in places to escape the beach bar, non-offensive aesthetic. Although not very hard.
No thanks
2.5 - ok
It wasn't necessarily bad; it was just boring. There are other reviews that captured it better.....but it was very much like listening to something in the background of a hotel bar. She can sing.
Perfectly fine background music. I could have hurt this album ten times in restaurants and I'm not sure I would have remembered it.
Background music. Not bad but not good
c'est tout chill
Lift music for lift people
Yawn
Høres ut som kafémusikk
Definitely not my favorite genre so maybe I’m just missing the genius of this album? Or maybe this album shouldn’t be on this list
Fine listen but nothing unique.
Give me a cigarette in some swanky dark cold bar and I can enjoy this in the background
OK. 2/5
This was OK, but I can't say there was much there that I liked. It had some interesting moments in the midst of something I found boring overall. It reminded me a bit of the Norah Jones album from a few weeks ago, where it sounded like something I'd enjoy for the few minutes I was inside a store but forget within a few minutes of walking out. I think this one had a little more life to it, though, which I appreciated. It wasn't a bad listen, but I probably won't be listening to this again. Overall: 2.4/5
At first I was pretty intrigued by another Brazilian artist because I’ve liked the samba on this list so far. But halfway through I had to ask myself, if it wasn’t in Portuguese, would this sound any different than a subpar coffee shop album? For me, it’s a no.
what i expected: background music what i got: background music
I can’t fairly grade this since I don’t understand the lyrics but from what I can hear, unlike her producer, I could have died without hearing this.
Not for me really.
Not bad just boring to me this style of music really needs the lyrics to be understandable as the backing is just not unique enough to make it stand out.
Wasn't bad, but faded into the background for me a lot
Heard some of this style music on soma.fm, what's so good about this album though?
There's part of me that's glad that other genres and even different languages are being recommended because it shows this list is nothing if not diverse. This is something I never would have listened to before. Unfortunately it's something I'll probably never listen to again. Perfectly inoffensive music, nothing that much to write home about apart from a couple of ok tracks. I have to imagine that there's better recommendations than this in terms of foreign language or world music, there just isn't much to say here.
What? Atanarjuat 3: An iguana watches Iguazu? This album was so long and slow. I'm not even opposed to elevator music, I gave Aja 5 stars. This is just too much though.
2/5. Very samey and dreamlike. Lots of it's listenable but forgettable. Not worth asphyxiating for.
Probably not helped by my lack of understanding of Spanish - but this just seemed like a nothing easy listening album?
Nothing special here.
To my knowledge I have never listened to this album before, but if you told me I have, I'd believe you. It's lovely but immediately forgettable.
Oh hey, famous dad. I mean, it's alright. Seems fine enough. Nothing remarkable. A solid 2.5 stars. And we're gonna round DOWN for nepotism
Although I appreciate the craft here, this type of music slides into the background and I don't actually listen to it.
Nope..
It’s fine - good as background music but I could definitely have lived without listening.
Not for me. Found it boring.
All very nice but this lacks any real depth and feels like it just drifts along. Highlights like Bananeira are few and far between.
Not bad. Listenable but not for me
Blind album and artist. Someone died to save this album from smoke inhalation and a fire? Sucks cause I did not like this album very much and I would not do the same for my job.
There were rumours that Bebel was actually Len Houmous’ daughter. It was after Astrud wrote a song about the iron butterfly. It would explain a lot of her talent and her big mouth! 2.0 3/7 Tanto Tempo
As other reviewers have noted, this is excellent lift music. I had no idea that I couldn't live without it, and I very much doubt that I could. 2/5
Eh. Nepo baby does ode to father's legacy, poorly. Yawn. Good use of progressive and fusion elements. But in my heart of hearts this is spitting on the face of bossa nova and trying to adapt it to the 2000s. Good for normies. Not for I.
electronic downtempo meets bossa nova
This was an easy listen. Not bad, but not great. There were good moments, but a lot of meh. It started to feel like the same thing on loop. Bebel Gilberto is a good singer. Liked Songs: "Samba Da Bencao" , "Sem Contencao" , "Mais Feliz" , "Alguem" , "So Nice (Summer Samba)" , "Bananeira" , "Close Your Eyes"
As far as jazzy, sexy Brasilian wallpaper goes, I guess this is fine, but it doesn't exactly demand attention. Apparently the producer, 'Suba' Subotić tragically died while rescuing the tapes from a studio fire. I feel a bit like Colin Firth's character in Love Actually where the Portuguese maid jumps into a lake to save his novel while he desperately tries to convince her, despite them not speaking the same language, that it's really not worth saving.
eh
Atmospheric and fun. I could tolerate it as background music.
Interesting, not my first choice. 3.1/10
If this project were an art gallery with 1001 pieces, this one would be a small room covered in velvet wallpaper. It's luxurious but superficial, repetitive, and utterly inartistic.
This album is a little boring and slow. The kind of music they play at a high-end bar, where there’s a beautiful lady in a sparkly dress singing in a foreign language. I do love the singers voice although I can’t understand a word she’s saying (I don’t speak Portuguese). It’s not my style but I didn’t hate it, it’s okay. Standout songs: Sem Contencao Bananiera Close Your Eyes
This album is so boring that I wouldn’t even consider it for background music
🥮
A pleasant listen, but a bit forgettable.
Decent background music but that's about it.
The perfect music to buy crystals to. Especially if those crystals contain traces of americium-241.
Kinda nice as background music but that’s about it really for me
A style of music that isn't my forte. This album is very calming and relaxing, but nothing too memorable to me. I think I miss out on a level of enjoyment from this because I don't speak the language the songs are in, but the sound itself sounds good. Very few of the songs are spoken in English, but I did quite enjoy them. My favorite song off this has to be Bananeira because it sounds really fun. Made me want to get up and dance even though I got no clue what she is saying. Don't see myself going back to this album, but I can see how someone would enjoy this. My top three songs are probably Bananeira, August Day Song, and So Nice (Summer Samba).
Ganska tråkig.
Asså mysigt men trist genre.
A perfectly lovely album of bossa nova and Brazilian-inspired music...but I'm not sure the album is distinct enough to be any higher than a 3 for me.
It was alright. Just a chill album but wouldn’t listen again. Kind of just wanted to get through it. Laid back bossa nova.
Elevator music. Pretty but insubstantial.
Artiste inconnue. Je me suis donc ennuyé assez vite ! Pas de seconde écoute pour moi. =>2/5
Ummm.... nah.
Favourite track(s): August Day Song; Bananeira Feels like background music. Non-offensive, while musically not very interesting. Lyrics are probably very beautiful - wouldn't know. The vocals are soft and the language beautiful. But that cannot save the album.
Just felt like background music. 2 stars
Haven't really gone back to this. It's pretty mellow and Bebel has a nice voice but i haven't had the desire to listen to it again. 6/10 Favourite: Samba da benção Least Favourite: Samba e amor
Spotify only had 7 of the 11 tracks making up this album, so I had to hunt around YouTube for the missing 4. A task made more annoying because I was hunting up music I didn't really have any particular desire to listen to. This isn't an awful album, just a dull one, which in some ways is a worse crime. Two stars.
ion like it
Very inoffensive bossa nova. Would make great background music at best. Nothing remarkable in my opinion and another one for the "why is this on the list" pile 2*
This isn’t BAD, but it’s very smooth in an early 00s way that is disappointing for a type of music that should sound at least a bit sweaty.
I know very little about Bossa Nova music. I do know that Bebel Gilberto is a nepo baby and I did see a Laufey show once (it was very good), so there's that.
Haven't heard of her before. A sweet bossa nova album but nothing crazy 2/5
i like bossanova but the electronic sounds feel kinda dated to me on this one
2 out of 5. Lovely voice, just all the music blended after a while.
After the first song I felt I was going to be bored to death. Tung second song picked up but then only one other did that. I may not like bossa nova. So Nice was comedically bad.
It was like cafe jazz in the wrong way. Perfectly pleasant but also bland and repetitive
This just felt like background music. It was fine, but I felt little emotion either way from it.
Pleasant enough.
A pleasant listen, but more in context of a bar or club. Does me no harm, but nothing I would listen to all day. 2,5
Not my style, but I didn’t mind it as background music
too chill for me, unfortunately i am too into lyrics and synthesisers to be able to fully appreciate this
Bossa nova and even some songs in a language I don't speak a word of is one of the things I love about this list. Something I would never have listened to if not for this. The sound is exactly what I think about when I hear the term bossa nova. She has a great voice but I don't really know when I would choose the genre to listen to in my daily life.
Parts of it were pretty enough, but I just didn't connect at all. Not really for me.
Not my usual thing but I enjoyed it. Nice beat, relaxing jams
It’s nice and mellow, and pretty accessible and a fine listen in my growing bass nova exposure However It’s not one that impresses me and it’s lower on the Brazilian albums I see my self revisiting
Appreciate I may not get the cultural elements but for me this is pleasant background music.
Always happy to hear new stuff but when it comes to Samba it’s way outside my list of musical likes. Appreciate what others say about its musical value but I’d rather leave it to them for listening pleasure. 2/5 21/5/25.
Very sweet, completely inoffensive lounge music that is unlikely to have a major impact on you, but might raise a smile.
It's alright. Makes me feel like I've heard what I need to with this genre, and I now fully understand that while it has a few gems here and there, it's mostly not for me.
I found this to be excellent background music for a wine tasting event in Napa Valley. Nothing grabbed my attention except for Summer Samba, which has been done by musicians from Andy Williams to Dizzy Gillespie. If you’ve heard the Getz/Gilberto album, you get the idea.
Elevator music at it's finest
I enjoyed this while driving around in a rainstorm but that's about it. I'm not wild about bossa nova, especially played this straight. This being a fusion with electronic music is overstated. I'm sorry that guy died in a fire.
2.5
The vocals are too breathy. This album would've been better served if the vocal tracks were replaced with instrumentation. 2 stars.
Faded to the background almost immediately
Tanto Tempo? More like not enough tempo
One of the most inoffensive albums ive listened to in the life. Could have gone without listening to this but I also feel like I’ve heard it 1000 times over in every bar in the Canary Islands 2/5
I can only assume this made the list because the poor producer died trying to save it. Reception music
It was enjoyable enough, but not in English so no way to know if she’s singing nonsense or a nursery rhyme or something reasonable. Just at a huge disadvantage when it comes to comparing international albums.
Not exactly my type of music but it's not bad. A bit boring.
Quite enjoyed this, but it gets a bit like eating too much cake after a while. Sweet and moreish for a bit, then a bit too sugary after a while. Expertly done, but could do with a bit more oomph / change of pace at times.
There's not quite enough here for me to form an opinion. It's pleasant, she has a decent voice. But I wanted a little more variety and experimentation. It sounds like Bossa Nova pop music. A little bland.
Background music in a holiday tv program to Brazil. Amon Tobin sampled the first track... so thats cool I guess?
This is good... for elevator music. Dreadfully boring. I'm sure there's some artistic merit here, but I did not need to hear this before I died.
1.5
Muito legal!
This is the album Suba died saving! I learned that tragic story when we listened to Suba’s album, not realizing that the recording he produced and saved, Bebel Gilberto’s “Tanto Tempo,” was yet to come on the list. Maybe I should have known - apparently working with Suba or being a Gilberto is the ticket to the 1001 for Brazilian bossa nova artists. Bebel’ dad João and his first wife Astrud are both on the list, so Bebel hits both requirements. I’m not sure what happened in the 30-plus years between João’s hits and Bebel’s in Brazilian music, but we can see an evolution (that may be largely due to Suba?) in style. Suba’s downtempo genre-bending makes a bit of a mark on “Tanto Tempo,” but if I’m remembering correctly I think I like his own album better than this one.
Nothing specific to dislike here. I just feel like I am on hold.
There are like 20 albums I can’t understand why we haven’t seen. But here’s some modern elevator music. Cool.
Meh
For anyone born or living in Brazil for the last 20 years, it's impossible to do not recognize some of these songs. They are the quintessential songs for elevators and supermarkets in the country. Now that I've listened to the full album, I can state that it's not much better than elevator songs, indeed. Best track: The jazzy "Close Your Eyes."
#499. This is elevator music. And at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if it's the greatest elevator music album on the world, it's still just elevator music. 2/5: yawn
Not my style, I don't like this normal vacation music
Not exactly something i'd put on again.
