It’s nice but I wouldn’t die to save it.

bloopa nova

Kinda cool listen but I still do not understand how this is a must listen.

Pretty album that blends nice traditional Brazilian bossa nova with some more modern and interesting takes. I really liked "August Day Song" for that reason: the guitar playing is gorgeous and full of soft tensions and her voice plays so nicely with the guitar that it's a real joy to listen to. I think I would have rated this a little higher if it had more of these types of songs on it. Nice album!

I thought I knew what bossa nova was, but after reading that this album is referred to as a staple to the genre, I don't really know it anymore. This was an overall pleasant listen, it exudes sophisticated background cocktail party vibes with suave suites and colorful dresses. If I ever plan on throwing a party like that I'll make sure to add this to the playlist.

gently swinging summer sounds, music for the hips

Although I wouldn't stream it, the production and instrumentals were nice. Three stars!

++: Samba da Bênção, Tanto Tempo, So Nice (Summer Samba), Lonely, Samba e Amor, Close Your Eyes +: Mais Feliz, Alguém, Bananeira, No Return +-: August Day Song, Sem Contenção 7,2/10

This was fine but I have had better similar albums in this list. Stand-out: Tanto Tempo

Starts strongs but dwindles a bit as it goes on (or maybe one just gets used to the sameness). Pleasant discovery nonetheless.

I don’t listen to a lot of bossa and can’t imagine reaching for this very often. That being said this was an enjoyable listen and I especially liked the production which I assume is a little different from a lot of bossa. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pleasant

We listened in the car and technically I have a few songs left to listen to, but it was just ok for me. She does have a nice voice. 3 stars.

Nette Stimme, aber dieser Lateinamerikanische? Portugal? - Sound ist nicht so ganz meins. Man konnte es sich anhören

Ganz okay, fand die Stimme angenehm, hat mich im Background nicht gestört.

Nice, gentle samba

Wish I understood the language. That said I listened to the whole album and enjoyed it all the same.

So Much Time, but despite that I can only find 25 minutes of this to listen to in that time. It's not even on YouTube! Which is a shame because what I heard was so nice. Arf. I listened to live versions of a few tracks and one cover. So anyway, this is absolutely silky smooth. Just beautiful. Joao Gilberto's girl had a good chance of making a great bossa nova record, but it was in no way guaranteed. So yeah, very lovely that she appears to have nailed it here. Trying to find the rest of this record lead me to remembering she worked with the producer Suba in making this, which is an unknown record I really enjoyed much earlier in this journey and have since forgotten. So I'm going back to that now. I am pretty sure I attempted to listen to this after getting Suba's record and had the same problems then.

Nice and relaxing

D Bebel, de Gilberto und ihri Tanto hend es ahgnehms Mittwuch vormittags Tempo, und wie de Basilito scho erwähnt het, endlich mal öppis anders wie änglischito! Absolut passendi Work-, Choch-, Chill- oder sustigi all-day-hintergrundmusigito. Erfrischend und andersch - me gusta. Brasilianischi sängerin und serbische producer did not expect that - me gusta. Suba died from smoke inhalation while saving the newly recorded album from a studio fire - ultra sad. Wber zeigt wahrschindli au biz wivell s ihre bedüted hed. Eich heds mir recht gfalle aber zum ehrlich sie nur eis lied gspeicheret und zu oft wirdi au nüm dennach sueche. Aber wenni im brasilianische entspannigsphase bin - i know who to call. Darum mit schwerem herze 3 ehrlichi sambas vu mir

Boring after a while

This was a very pleasant album to listen to. Latin rhythms and terrific voice..

This one was alright. No way near as beautiful as the records by Bebel's father João Gilberto from the 50's, 60's, and 70's, but it still the delivers the same airy and soft aesthetic as those albums. Kinda like an updated version of Bossa Nova for the new millennium. Key tracks: Samba da Benção Tanto Tempo

A beautiful slice of late evening sunshine. Smooth and floaty and lovely.

3, 4 if you listen in the rain

I like the feel of this, even not understanding most of the lyrics. I would do a 3.5 here, but dropping for a bit of same-ness in the songs.

This is pretty chill. Not bad but not something that I would go searching for

This was a step up from the last couple albums this week - I enjoyed it but probably wouldn't listen again. Bossa Nova to me is lobby or restaurant music.

pleasant, not much to say about it

Crazy the producer died saving this record from the fire. I love all the little trip hoppy beats on some of the songs. A healthy mix of lounge and trippiness but I prefer the trippy stuff.

The lounge easy listening songs here bore me but theres some interesting tracks near the end. Inoffensive.

Pretty nice warm lounge type music

Beautiful voice. Excellent musical arrangements

Bebel, daughter of João He and Stan made me wow Herself less so The producer died He successfully tried To save the tapes Studio up in flames Music not emotionally triggering Over a dinner party sniggering

This is often beautiful album - however, this is elevator music. There’s nothing really special about this album. At times there seem to be sparkles of truly magical ideas, but they’re ultimately drowned out by monotony - which is the biggest shame. I didn’t hate this album, and I can see myself putting it on in the background in the future; I just wish there was more. It’s obvious the inspiration and the talent is there.

Was nice, but in a language I don't speak, so wasn't able to fully enjoy it.

Although for me this would be more relegated to background music than something I actively listen to, I liked it quite a bit. Very pleasant with some nice production touches.

It's always impressive how boring Frank Sinatra etc managed to make Bossa Nova sound. Every BN/Samba offering from actual South American artists has been pretty decent!

it was pretty and had a lot of emotion, but not as good as others. You could tell there were feelings but they weren't as raw and emotional as I hoped. It eventually just started to feel like background music.

So nice... for a relaxing Sunday listen.

Pleasant bossanova beats and a chill delivery. Delightful summertime music!

This album is quite lovely, and it’s really sad how mired in tragedy it is. Dig the Brazilian lounge vibes.

It's supposed to be a modern take on bossa nova, but it sounds quite traditional for the most part. I don't mind at all. Towards the end there's some more pop influences from that era (especially Bananeira). I don't like those songs very much. As usual for Brazilian music, the singing is very laid-back, using only a very limited section of her vocal range. But that's the style. She does it well. Favorite song: sem contenção

Super smooth voice. Great for background music. I won't go as far as saying this music is revolutionary in any capacity, but it's pleasant, played well, and pays homage to a fantastic jazz sub-genre. Bebel Gilberto's vocal is definitely the highlight, though the lightly strummed acoustic guitar is a consistent and comforting element that should also be commended. The modern production sounds fine here, but I honestly didn't notice it until I read some more information about the album and its significance. It's pretty subtle. I didn't catch it on a first listen. As another reviewer wrote: "Tanto Tempo is often billed as bossa-nova meets electronica, but on first listen the electronic elements are scarcely noticeable. At best, they contribute really well to the ambience." In fact, some tracks actually take this the other way. The album opener, Samba da Bencao, sounds like it's being played from an old, battered vinyl. So Nice (Summer Samba) sounds subtly like this too, as do many other tracks on the album. Was this an intentional effect? And if so, why?Another problem is that I don't hear much in terms of album "ups" and "downs" that create a full experience. In other words, there isn't much variety – texturally or tonally – between the different tracks. Medium energy, medium-slow tempos, essentially the same set of instruments (and often in the same key) throughout. Everything remains in one tasteful style, but for a record to achieve a really high rating from me, it's going to have to be more impressive than that. 3/5 Key tracks: August Day Song, Mais Feliz, So Nice (Summer Samba)

So apparently someone died while saving this record from a studio fire wtf Pretty soothing, nice to have as background music "Bananeira" - Banger 3.5

I’ve never heard of Bebel Gilberto or this album before. However, reading about the recording of this album, that absolutely tragic what happened to Suba, who died saving this recording. I can’t imagine what the release of this album must have felt like to Bebel. I’m not familiar with bosa nova music either, but I’m definitely willing to give this album a fair shot and see what it has to offer. I don’t have many strong feelings towards this album, but it was pleasant to listen to. I enjoyed the relaxed mood, and I thought the vocals were really fantastic. The sense of ease I felt listening to this reminded me of how I felt listening To Serge Gainsbourg’s album. The rhythms were enjoyable too, and I think they really contributed a lot to this album’s laid-back feel. “August Day Song” was great, and I’d say that it was my favorite song on the album. I loved how the signers went back and forth and even had some sparse harmonies. “Mais Feliz,” “Alguém,” and “So Nice” were good as well. Overall, this album was fine, and I enjoyed the overall sound, but there were quite a few songs on it that I thought were a touch boring.

A good listen

I'm very partial to Brazilian music and I love some bossa nova, but I was expecting more from the daughter of João Gilberto, if I'm honest. It's not that it was bad, she is clearly a very talented singer, but she doesn't have the same soul that I hear in the recordings of the classic singers. Nothing stood out to me and I wouldn't listen again in a hurry. It's on the higher side of 2/5 but just rounds up to a 3.

It’s hard to make bad music in this style, but still, why is this here? It’s a three because it’s good at what it does, but what makes this album notable enough to be in this list?

Benel Gilberto has a beautiful voice. The album was light and pleasant- it had a few rcognizable Brazilian classics. Overall- it was nice. 3.5/5

I've alluded to it before, but it's important to have a stable of good albums you can put on at certain gatherings that will both add texture to the function and not distract from it. This is absolutely one of those albums.

Deeply pleasant, arranged and performed well, very acoustic. Has a kind of perfect almost snowglobe-like quality I associated with other artists from around this time like Norah Jones. I appreciate the modern (for 2000, at least) sound it's going for but it's not my favorite MPB I've ever heard.

This is a pleasant loungy, bossa style record. I don't know what she is singing about, but I do like her voice and the subtle background arrangements. I guess it could be called elevator music, but it blended nicely into the background as I worked.

bebel bossa nova!!

We listened in the car and technically I have a few songs left to listen to, but it was just ok for me. She does have a nice voice. 3 stars.

Very chill Brazilian music that wouldn't sound out of place in a bar or hotel lobby. It was fine but not really my thing.

I wasn’t that into it but its cool that she is related to joão… nice and pleasant

Liked this better than I thought I would. Still not really for me.

Music is comforting and just chill, but working is like dogshit

This is what summer sounds like, either hanging in the garden with friends or driving with the roof down.

This one kinda gets screwed by the fact that I'm American who doesn't really listen to foreign folk music (aside from some European folk music when its involved in black metal), and when it does come up, it's used as a novelty or as soundtrack music in a movie to convey a specific culture, so that is (unfortunately) the association I immediately get listening to it. Basically a me issue, and not a fault of the music itself. That said, it's really good music (or at least, as best I can tell. I don't have anywhere near enough experience with bossanova to be able to tell if this is exceptional or run-of-the-mill as far as the genre goes), just something I can't ever see myself going back to listen to. If it came up sometime randomly, I wouldn't turn it off though and would chill to it. So yeah. Default 3/5 because I don't know how to rate it, but it was a fine listen.

Not on Tidal sadly and I could only find two thirds on YouTube but I enjoyed what I heard.

ice background music in a latin themed restaurant :-)

Pretty good

Very smooth and a nice listen, but I don’t think there’s enough novelty about this that it should outrank albums from the heyday of this sound.

a good time tbh

Perfectly nice

Wow, the Gilberto family really has the bossa nova scene sewn up. This example is pleasant but unexciting.

Nice album, gave me tropical vibes

An elecronic Bossa Nova album that sounds like a throwback to the 1960s. It's very pleasant to listen to, but I'm not sure why it's in this list because to me it's nothing special - perhaps because the producer died after trying to rescue this album from a fire?

Sounds like Sade singing bossa nova.

Great album for cooking! I wouldn’t just sit and listen to it again but I think it would be excellent in the background of dinner. Love her voice!

Half uptempo, half downtempo. I think if it was more one or more the other, I’d have an easier time having a strong opinion on this record. Because the thing is, I like samba and bossa nova on a baseline level, regardless of its tempo. And Tanto Tempo is consistent, while also adding some cool flourishes of electronic elements, which do enough to warrant this record intriguing. The problem is that Gilberto does uptempo muchhhh better than downtempo, and the downtempo tracks are the more traditional, and therefore lack the electronic flourishes that make this record interesting. It’s fine. If I put it on at a party, it’d go over well. I could listen without complaint. But when it’s not on or staring me in the face, I know for a fact that I’ll forget all about it. It’s so close to inventive, and the fact that it never takes that leap fully makes it even more lackluster somehow. Because now, I’m left with a largely traditional bossa nova album that’s pretending to be forward-thinking while really being stuck in the past, and if I wanted to listen to yesterday’s bossa nova, I could just go and do that.

This wasn't available as an album on Spotify or Youtube so I could only listen to about half the songs as a Spotify playlist made up of tracks on compilations. Very pleasant and chilled but can't rate it more than a 3 without hearing the whole thing.

This album suffers from me not speaking Portuguese, as I definitely connected better with the English language songs. Bossa Nova is definitely a fun genre, and I definitely found myself tapping my foot quite often through it

Included in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Tanto Tempo comes with a mythic backstory—producer Suba tragically took the book’s title a little too seriously, literally sacrificing his life to save the album’s masters during a studio fire. This devastating event inevitably coloured the album’s reception, lending it an aura of poignancy and elevating its legacy. However, while the stakes were high, the payoff feels underwhelming. Bebel Gilberto’s voice is undeniably smooth, intimate, and hypnotic, embodying the sensuality of bossa nova with a contemporary twist. Her whispered delivery enhances the dreamy quality of tracks like So Nice (Summer Samba) and Sem Contenção, which highlight her ability to balance lightness and emotion. The seamless integration of acoustic guitars and soft percussion with understated electronic textures creates a soundscape that is minimal yet lush, evoking sunlit beaches and warm, balmy evenings. Yet, the English-language tracks falter. Here, her phrasing feels tentative, as if the emotional connection so effortlessly conveyed in Portuguese struggles to translate. The lyrics themselves sometimes clash with the music's otherwise seamless flow, creating moments that feel slightly disjointed. Praised for merging traditional bossa nova with electronic beats, the album pushes boundaries but often feels as though its components coexist rather than truly fuse. While this sound may have felt cutting-edge in 2000, the chill-out/lounge genre has since been oversaturated—countless Café del Mar compilations have done this style to death and, frankly, often done it better. Though Tanto Tempo undoubtedly holds a place in the evolution of modern bossa nova, its impact feels dulled by time and repetition. Its lasting value, in my opinion, lies more in its influence and the story behind its creation than in the quality of its execution. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? Questionable. Would this release make my personal list? No. Will I be listening to it again? While there’s a place for this album, it’s not something I’ll actively seek out.

I liked this one quite a bit. Going into it I had no preconceived ideas about the artist, and obviously I can’t speak on the lyrics but overall it was pleasant background music while I worked. I’m not sure that “it’s pleasant and doesn’t distract me” mis the highest compliment you can pay an artist but I would throw this one on again if I’m looking for something to listen to while working on a project.

This was fine. I liked samba and bossa nova vibe but really didn't find myself overly excited by any of the songs.

Probably would be a higher score if I understood the language

It was fine, blended into the background.

I don’t know anything about Samba but I enjoyed this a lot and would happily toss it on in the background.

Actually liked it more than I thought I would. Very relaxing background music. That said, I'm not sure I needed to hear this before I die. It's pleasant but it's also is just there. I kind of wish half star ratings were available. A pure neutral rating.

Sweet and nice album but in a way it makes me crave older Bossa Nova/MBP with a little more groove than this because those were clearly the best songs, the ones leaning more towards the downtempo lounge stuff just didn't do it for me sadly

Not too bad. Kind of nice

I'm glad this album surviced the 'loungehype' where she got tagged along in for a while. A warm album from the daughter of a Bossa Nova legend.

Very decent would listen again. Definitely kinda had it on in background but it was overall enjoyable. 3/5 (could move up too a 3.5/5)

Initially I was excited to hear this. Slow, chill, ballads. Beautiful voice. Spanish. What's not to love? But when hearing it, just didn't really connect with any of the songs. Nothing bad, solid album, but not something I'd go back to. Except Bananeira, that song was a total bop. Best song: Bananeria

First listen. Ok I guess.

I think this is what I needed on a Monday morning, but not sure I would need it again.

Why am i always such a big fan of these funky little albums?! I would’ve totally given it four stars but it started to sound like café music by the end. I’m sure it’s a good café, but still, three stars it is

Bebel tiempo bb (2.5/5)

Enjoyable while I worked - for once it was a little too short.

PJ Harvey if she was from South America

Lovely

Good music, nice to see something different. Not my style, but still fun.

This was pretty. So much bossa nova music sounds the same, but “Bananeira” was definitely a standout. Her voice was really really smooth.

Great save by Suba! Evidently bossa nova sounds smoother and more schmaltzy in Portuguese than Spanish or English. Has that Girl From Ipanema sound throughout - liked Tanto Tiempo start to finish. (3.2*)

This is ambient soundscape meets bossa nova in a pretty progressive and good way. There's a sultry, relaxing vibe throughout that I really got into. I liked the tempo changeup on Bananeira and felt like several other songs had the ability to transport one to a lively brunch, a sparkly dance floor, or a poolside cabana and I wasn't mad at any of it. Would like to hear newer takes (later than 2000) where they push the electronic aspect even further. Going with a 2.65

This was a surprise. Brazilian electronic bossa nova? I went in with low expectations and was very pleased that I was greeted with a pretty solid album album. Not something I'll listen to regularly but there is definitely a time and place for this. Much of the sounds and vocals are quite pleasant. I actually enjoyed a couple songs enough to throw them into my random list. Great choice as I can't imagine I would ever have run into this otherwise. This could end up as one of the biggest surprise tidbits to take out of the 1001 when all is said and done. 2.71 stars

Bosanova is easy listening. I can always have this kind of music in the background when I'm working. Also, it's interesting to learn about the Gilberto family tree and how it define/owned the genre for so long. The track I liked best if the first one: Samba de Bencao.

Bossa Nova as a genre is basically the definition of 3-Star music: Pretty, appealing, totally listenable, but rarely challenging and only occasionally letting songs drift up to the 4 or 5-star range.

I remember liking this more 20 years ago, but it may have been that the bossa nova sound was a bit more novel, or time has done it's thing and it just sounds a bit more dated. Not bad, but a lot of it faded into the background, or wasn't nearly as charming as I remember.

Light and jazzy, bossa nova elements create a nice and relaxing experience. Not familiar with her music, but a sad and tragic end. Definitely a good album to put on while making dinner with a glass of wine.

it do have tempo

Sounded decent but wasn’t something I’d probably listen to again

Some smooth smooth bossa nova. Not especially memorable but makes great background music, relaxing coffee shop vibes.

I really liked this, great great vibes

Kind of an unremarkable samba/lounge album. The standout bits are the electronic/computerized flourishes in the beats that appear occasionally. The singing is good, and she sings as well in English as she does in Portuguese. I’m not sure this would be in this list if her father wasn’t João Gilberto, who is one of the biggest musical figures in Brazil. It’s fine but I’d rather hear his stuff to be honest.

This is nice background music and has more to it than the Wii game select screen that I generally compare it to. I don't think there is anything influential or novel here, it's just subtlety enjoyable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IixgxFEx0AU

An album I’d have never stumbled across without this list. I’m glad I’ve listened to it before I die. Beautiful vocals and atmosphere.

I think I listened to all of this? I may even have listened to it more than once, who knows? It all sounds pretty similar. I'm not sure this album should really make the cut BUT its really nice to have a break from all the dude bros from the UK/USA. 2 stars for the music, and bumped up to 3 for featuring a woman who is from Brazil instead of the usual crowd.

I wouldn’t have sought this out, but happily surprised. It’s well done, chill, jazzy bossa nova. I don’t speak Portuguese, but enjoyed the vibe very much. Might put it on in the background next time my in-laws come over for dinner. 3⭐️

Album 543 of 1001 Bebel Gilberto - Tanto Tempo (2000) Rating : 3 / 5 Bossa Nova isn't something I ever crave but I don't mind listening to it. Always uplifting, in a way. Makes you want to move a little, Just love the sound.

Enjoyable, not great

Even though the cover art was thrown together in a 1994 version of Photoshop, I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. This is not an artist I would seek out to listen to, but her vocal talent is clearly there. It’s just not my taste.

Smooth, beautiful, but never too interesting

Didn’t really care for this, I’m sure it would be decent background music but it was in the foreground for me. 2.5/5

Wow I thought this was really nice.

Couldnt find the original album but found a remixed album. It was great.

Very relaxing. I'm not going to go out of my way to listen to it, but enjoyed it as background music while I worked.

Nice background music

En tiennytkään, että bossa nova oli vielä 2000-luvulla näin voimissaan. Ihan passeli genrensä edustaja.

Soothing and gentle. I think it helps, actually, that I don't know what she's saying 😅

Pretty, but not super memorable.

Had a cool feeling but nothing I'd really go back to

Relaxing, chilled out. Decent 3

Bebel Gilberto has such a beautiful voice! Her vocals are the exact reason why Tanto Tempo was so smooth and melodic. Listening to a mostly Portuguese album let me focus more on the vocal quality instead of the lyrics. The album, I fear, was a little to slow for me despite its beauty. I need something with a little more bounce so I don't finish the album sleepy. Regardless, bossa nova mixed with electronic was something unique and unexpected--and I enjoyed, even if I was terribly sleepy.

After listening to stan getz a few days ago thisbis not even in the same ballpark. Its meh just an ok album wwith great soothing relaxing music but nothing special

a nice background album. i’ve been looking for something like this.

This is not too bad, but not mind blowing in any way. I guess I might lean towards wanting more old fashioned production for this style of music, as I found some of the production styles to give this a little bit of an easy listening vibe.

meh pleasant

ósköp snoturt og hljómfagurt. strandmúsík, róleg og rómantísk. ekki fyrir mig en ekkert slappt.

The daughter of legendary bossa nova musician Joao Gilberto proves she’s worthy of following in his footsteps. Mellow, playful, and fitting for a summer afternoon.

It's possible I would like this more if I could understand it.

Beautiful

Got a hornets nest you need removed? Play them this album first, they'll be so sedated, they won't even think of attacking you. Recommended by 3/5 hive removal specialists.

Very Latino. Great voice.

pretty good bossa nova

This is the first Portugese-language album I will have listened to start to finish, so looking forward to it! I very much get Norah Jones vibes from this record, and I mean that as a tremendous compliment. There were multiple songs with catchy hooks on this record despite being in multiple languages. Additionally there are instances where when one is not able to fully comprehend the words to a song, listening can feel like a drag. But on the contrary, this 41-minute album flew by! I may not come back to listen to this album again, but it was a great way to start my Tuesday! Notable Tracks: - Sem Contencao - So Nice (Summer Samba) - Bananeira 6/10

An album to die for (sorry)! Sultry and relaxing. The language barrier makes it difficult to elevate, but the consistent aura is enjoyable nonetheless. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: August Day Song, Samba E Amor

It's a nice listen, she has a lovely voice and the instrumentals are fun. I like the little electronic bits and what sounds like horn samples in a few places. Does run a bit same-y towards the end, I think 40 minutes was a good stopping point. If this was 50-60 minutes I think I would've been much more tired of it.

Det är skön bakgrundsmusik till en soft parmiddag men i längden så blir bossanova ganska blekt. Det funkar absolut men jag går inte igång på det.

Ptja, vad ska man säga? Trevlig lyssning men med något begränsad verkshöjd.

Perfect for a sunny Sunday afternoon, or a dentist office

Didn't know Joao's daughter could sing this well too. More mellow and less jazzy tunes compared to her father but still a good, relaxing album.

Great voice, boring songs.

Very relaxing. 3.5/5

Very pleasant background music

Best Song: Bananeira. That chorus is just beautifully catchy. Worst Song: Close Your Eyes. A weirdly abrasive and overly percussive track to close out the album. Especially with the English, this feels like an attempt to garner more international appeal. Overall: She has a lovely voice, and the arrangements are all pleasantly calming and quiet. Perfect after dinner music.

Nice enough, but didn't feel like I was missing out not having half the album on Spotify

South american/latino music is generally not my cup of tea. But even though, that was nice to listen to, especially thanks to the more up-beat songs.

Very chill. She has a lovely voice.

Very relaxing, jazzy samba. Very much enjoyed the sounds. Obviously the language barrier keeps the lyrics a secret which I think can be good and bad thing. I would listen again when relaxing by the pool on vacation.

This type of album is exactly why I started this project. I never would’ve found this gem of bossa nova and I enjoyed it! Bananeira was a standout :)

Weirdly this isn't on Spotify, despite her having tonnes of others on here. I can find the remix album, and a playlist of seven of the original songs, so I've opted to rate the latter. Very chilled, quite enjoyed it, would have liked to hear more. 3.5*

Pleasant, relaxing music. Some English, mostly Spanish I think.

Does nothing for me

I feel like this style plays much better in a more organic, traditional setting. Some of this is a little on the cheesy side, like the smooth jazz side of bossa nova. The final track really worked for me for this reason. 3/5

So soft and light that it teeters on the edge of even existing at all. But it's also a lot more authentic than some of the other "chill" artists of the era, and the minimal nature of the tracks makes them ideal for remixes, such as the Layo & Bushwacka remix of "So Nice," which I had on a L&B compilation. Just a shame there's not much to it in the first place.

No idea what she’s saying, but boppin all the way. A bossa nova album in the 21st century is a little late and it added very little. Really enjoyed all of it, though. 3/5

I liked this album. Samba E Amor was good, felt like I was in Italy. Overall very chill album to listen to. 3.5 stars.

Pleasant enough

I think this is quite beautiful.

Way out of my wheelhouse but a pleasant listen nonetheless. Could put it on when the parents come to visit.

Jazzig, modern, nette Stimme. 3/5

It was soothing and kinda fun

3.5 woah

I love bossa nova, but I’m not sure this album was worth dying for. This is not my favorite bossa nova album. Not even my favorite Gilberto.

I didn't know good bossa nova from bad. This was find in a small dose for me. But it did feel like a dentist office.

Super chill and all about the proper vibes. This Brazilian-American artist combines some solid Samba influences with Jazz and creates an overall pleasant album that, despite not being my cup of tea is merit-filled and easy to listen to.

Nice and mellow background music.

I liked this one, even though it's not a style I spend any time with. I could see myself listening to it again. There was a song that reminded me of Daytona USA on the Sega Saturn. 3/5

It's fine but after the first song sounds a bit same-y

I always enjoy a little bossa nova. This is a nice album. The words that come to mind for the production are tidy and tasteful. The balance of instruments is very controlled. This album seems fitting to hear at a spa. I enjoyed it on my Saturday stroll, but it isn’t something I’ll likely listen to again. 3.3

Nice, loungy downtempo and bossa vibe. Good for background music. Nothing thrilling, but overall enjoyable. 3.6

I like Bossa Nova and most anything that comes out of the Gilbertoverse, but this was a bit too slick and polished. Also, some of the songs were pretty annoying.

umm... nice.

The third member of the Gilbertos to grace The Proj, and very nice it was too. Nice being the word, as it was all extremely gentle and a little boring at times. She has a lovely voice, although if I was to sum it up in an adjective, it'd be nice.

I can imagine hearing this in some modern, upscale restaurant. Kinda boring for leisure listening

Beautiful music!

A pretty bossa nova record with some very light, modern touches including trip hop and other "atmosphere". It's pretty enough, but it's not very memorable. Favorite track: "Alguem"

Delicious voice, groovy sounds. It's like a chillout album. Faves: August Day Song, Bananeira, Close Your Eyes

Samba mit einem großen Namen - für mich auf dem Sprung in eine neue Samba-Ära, aber noch nicht angekommen. Mein Favorit: Bananeira mit Slap Bass.

2.5 Inoffensive, but fairly boring. I do love Bossa Nova but would rather listen to the older stuff from her father/Jobim/Getz

Smooth and surprisingly well produced for 2000's era pop.

Took a while to track down this album and even then I think I was missing some tracks. Perfectly pleasant lilting samba, lovely for a bit of background music

Pretty relaxing and good background

Pleasant

Easy. Breezy. Beautiful. Cover Girl.

good stuff. feel like im at the Warsaw restaurant on jazz night.

Voz perfeitamente moldada para a bossa.

Kind of boring unfortunately!

Interesting story on Suba saving the album from a studio fire. Fun music to swing your hips and snap your fingers to.

6.5/10 - 3/5 The subtle electronic elements were quite a nice surprise in this otherwise straightforward album. Bossa nova/samba isn't really my style, but this was decent. Few moments of energy, wish there were more.

I dug the vibe

elevator music bruh

not really into "Latino-music" but I really enjoyed this one! great voice, great vibes and great sound

I like the attempt to mix samba with jazz (bossa nova). But in the end it's probably too much samba for me.

It’s good but poor Suba shouldn’t have died for it.

Another Brazilian vocals album that I had to listen to before I died. Not unpleasant. Tries to sound like Mom, which is not a bad thing. 3 stars

Back to the 00's

This was quite nice, overall. Nothing really stood out though.

Very pleasant. Especially good for listening to at bedtime.

Was ok but too slow for me.

Nice easy listening

Nada podría recordarme más a mis papás. Pero está demasiado calmado.

Bossa Nova

Pretty sounding Latin music.

6/10. Yeah, this is pretty nice I suppose. Doesn't drive me wild, though

I think I would have liked this more if it was just bossa nova. Instead it almost leaned into trip hop, which was a little disappointing to me. 6/10

Bossa nova is cool! I didn't listen to it all, but the first half was good

Apparently Gilberto died of smoke inhalation saving this album from a fire. A tragic loss of life and tragic that this was the album she died to preserve. The story behind it is more interesting than the album itself which is a pleasant listen but nothing noteworthy.

I generally like the vibes, but it feels a bit over-produced to me in some ways. I think the raw beauty of her vocals are overshadowed by some of the instrumental choices. Like they were trying to make her some sort of star. Huge respect to the producer Suba for saving the albums from a fire and then unfortunately dying from smoke inhalation. That's above and beyond respect for the craft. Also look at the Pitchfork review archive on Wikipedia. Pretty chauvinistic, wowee. Different Pitchfork times.

I started this a couple of weeks ago. Been dreading returning to it. Idk why? It's actually pretty damn good! 7/10

Laid back and smooth samba album from an easily recognizable surname. The production is good and there’s some great tracks along the way. As a whole it just turns out a tad too bland to fully support the playtime.

Kinda cool so it gets the default foreign language 3.

Interesting, it started off as a standard Brazilian Bossa Nova record, something that sounded like it belonged in the 50s, but eventually got more modern with electronic synth music mixed into the backing jazz. Most was in Portuguese, some English songs. Overall it wasn't bad, just a smooth jazzy album good for background music

Not my style. But what a gorgeous mix of bossa nova and electronic music.

Baby making music

Not bad. Won't listen again though.

Very pleasant listening. Wikipedia says it is bossa nova but most of the songs sounded like more like jazz to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Good album!

This was solid if unremarkable.

I've had a couple of Samba records now and I'm digging it. Very relaxing and nice sounding.

Nice, smooth bossa nova music though I'm not quite sure why this album is so important that it needs to be on this list, there are others in the genre that are better than this album. Perhaps it's because Bebel is the daughter of Joao Gilberto?

Very chill. Would be suited to a nice bar or a quiet evening in.

very samba

Samba da Bencao - 7.5/10 August Day Song - 8/10 Tanto Tempo - 7.5/10 Sem Contenção - 8/10 Mais Feliz - 7/10 Alguém - 7/10 So Nice (Summer Samba) - 7.5/10 Lonely - 6/10 Bananeira - 9/10 Samba e Amor - 7.5/10 Close Your Eyes - 8/10 TOTAL - 83/110

Chill background music, a voice like caramel

Good listen for my morning commute, sure, but it was really just her droning over various samba beats.

Pretty good album.

This was a nice soothing album, I'm unsure if I'd listen again but it felt nice to hear.

I thought I was going to love this, but actually found it kind of boring. Her dad Joao was an absolute legend. Maybe the electronic textures over the bossa was a new/interesting sound but it kind of felt like poolside background music to me. Nothing super memorable. 2.5/3?

Cálido. Tranquilo. Gustoso. 2.5-3/5

Nice and chill, nothing amazing but an easy listen. Hotel bar music. 3/5

Made pleasant background noice while I was doing homework. Don’t have much else to say. Not really my thing

Fantastic lazy Sunday morning sort of vibe going on with this album. Don't put it on and expect to be productive, unless sitting at home while sipping on a cup of hot coffee while reading the New York Times is what you consider being productive. I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting.

Very calming. Don’t understand the language the artist is singing in but still found it good.

Gentle singing over samba backing

I liked it, it was pretty and had a good vibe to it. Not my favorite bossa nova of all time, I feel like there wasn't anything that hit me with the WOW aside from Bananeira. I'd listen again though it's pretty chill.

Neo-bossa, bilingual, good. 3.6

Bossa Nova is fun, although I was not huge about this. It was not bad, but I thought, overall, it was average. I wonder if this artist has any relation to the Gilberto from Getz/Gilberto.

Lovely

Very smooth laid back album. The mix of latin and english works pretty weel. Instrumentally it's pretty good and she sings very soothing. 7 out of 10

Fav: Sem Contenção LF: Bananeira Mid to low 7

As ever my radar for what makes 'good' Latin / bossa nova music is a bit limited - I can't even decide if the modern electronic elements are a help or a hindrance. All I know is that I tend to prefer the more upbeat bits and sometimes zone out during the mellow numbers. It's all a bit 'backgroundy' but mostly pleasant; I found more more to enjoy here than on the album that (I know now) her dad features on, 'Getz/Gilberto'. I'm gonna give this a nice neutral 2.5, rounded up.

Nice easy listening background music.

Meh. Sounds like elevator music or something. Not bad, just not good.

Kan 20 Bossa Nova albums noemen die ik liever in de lijst terugzie, en er zullen er vast nog honderden meer zijn. Prima album, maar nou niet echt bijzonder ofzo. Vond het elektronische eraan ook nou niet denderend.

Best Gilberto family album so far. More bossa nova, which I'm not the biggest fan of, but with a slight tinge of trip hop which kept it interesting throughout. Surprisingly interesting and tragic backstory on this one as well.

This artist literally died from saving this album for a fire... I'm glad she did. Nice "world" music that is a change of pace from modern American music 3.2

Couldn’t get the full album, but I got the gist.

A much slower album than expected. Beautiful music and singing.

довольно милая (опять не бесячая боссанова)

Current Bossa Nova. Pretty good. Not my thing.

Relaxed music and gentle voice for in the background.

not bad

Un peu séduit par l'idée du mix bossa + électro, et initialement content d'écouter qqch de différent dans ces albums proposés, mais finalement bof

Goed voor m'n Spaans.

Definitely something different from what I'm used to. Great exposure to an enjoyable album.

Bananeira is a bop

It was fine

Kinda fun.

Wish I could do 3.5 stars

I was not expecting to like this. I was wrong. Very smooth. I love her voice. A perfect album. I wish i knew it better. 3.5/5

She's definitely a chip off the old block, embracing a style that her father pioneered, but overall it's a bit to down tempo for me.

charming, modern bossanova doing its thang. can feel good about listening. will do. strong outing. avoids some of the cheese and trappings of the girl from ipanima like elevator stylings. fun! wow!

19th July 2023 Listened on the drive in to the office with Jen. Book club in trendy Paddington bar in the evening. Perfect for an early morning sunny drive, chilled bossanova. 3.5 if I could.

Couldn't get it on Amazon music but the songs I heard were good

Dreamy and lounge-y with Samba rhythms. + Samba de Bencao + Sem Contenção + So Nice (Summer Samba) + Bananeira

Cool voice, relaxing vibe. It was fine.

Spanish Jazz. Interesting if you're into that sort of thing.

It was good back when it was released but it sounds a bit drab now

Suavemente

Klinkt wel zomers, maar ik vond het wat traag en stilletjes

Some pretty cool Brazilian music. Recalls old school samba sounds but pulls in some modern influences. I saw another user say it was like how Amy Winehouse approached American Soul music. Pretty cool analogy.

Tanto Tempo Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Good album. Brazilian boss nova mixed with some pop

I didn’t have to hear this. Good falling asleep music.

Some decently good songs but mostly boring and nothing special. Suba should not have died for this album. FS: Close Your Eyes, So Nice

It's light and... "frothy." I felt like it was a nice iced drink when you're sitting by the pool. It wasn't deep, but it was satisfying in the moment. And really, that's all you really need, right? Probably my favorite track of the album was "Lonely." I thought the driving rhythm of the song complemented her singing well. The only thing was that it was satisfying in the moment, but it was fairly forgettable afterward. The songs didn't stick with me too much afterward. But when you go for light and frothy, that's what happens, you know?

Samba de Bencao and the title track are really lovely and sultry. It's clear how good Gilberto's vocals are from these two songs, and Suba's production is pretty slick too (maybe more credit should be given to the musicians?). I was also a big fan of Mais Feliz (like Shirley Manson and Garbage sultry), Bananeira (great beats), Samba e Amor (great vocals). I'm less of a fan of the songs sung in English because I then realize how bad the lyrics are. August Day Song has some great instrumental again, but then words such as "I like to sing and do these things with you..." Ugh, tragic. Ditto So Nice ("someone to hold me tight that would be very nice" - yeesh) and Close Your Eyes. Sem Contencao also sounded a little too simple. There were times that I was creeping towards a 4 but then other times I was reminded how this album was missing some substance. Perfect for beside-the-pool listening and as much as I like her voice and some of the compositions, I don't think I'm pining to hear more.

This album didn't do much for me on the first listen - decent background music - but I found myself enjoying it on subsequent listens. Nice voice, enjoyable music, and excellent musicianship. Not anything I think I'd go out of my way to hear again, but certainly not bad. Songs that caught my attention: August Day Song, Mais Feliz, Alguem, Lonely (real nice mysterious vibe), Bananeira.

pretty good stuff. Not a genre I ever choose to listen to so it was worth the time.

June 7, 2023 (late night, trying to write a theatre piece) HL: “Samba de Bencao”, title track, “Close Your Eyes”, “Sem Contencao” 💃🏿 It sounds like purgatory. No I cannot fully explain what I mean by that Even the brassy ending song “Close Your Eyes” doesn’t give much closure. It traps that carnaval energy in a loop. Is that just a feature of bossa nova then Fave track has to be the intro, probably the best fusion of spooky electronica & serene acoustic guitar 3.5

While it certainly wasn't some of the UK rock/punk/pop we have had to endure, it was still a middle of the road album for me.

Chill music. Great for having on while relaxing or cooking dinner. The only other Brazilian artists I know are Seu Jorge and Os Mutantes; this is much calmer than those other two.

Great background music

It was an ok jazz contemporary album that would be perfect for a nice chill evening. I can appreciate what Bebel Gilberto has done, but it's really not my cup of tea. Best: Samba da Bencao Worst: Alguem

It's very pretty. Lovely singing, really nice delicate instrumentation, but with lots of interesting layers. Some of these songs are definitely entering the rotation on my various 'chill' mixes.

Pretty good.

Chill background music

Woo some bosa nova, time to flex because I can :p Also thanks for the soundcloud ditty Robert OwO Claro que hai un sonido moi moderna tendo en conta que este álbum é dos anos noventa coas elementos electrónica. Creo que é un álbum moi creativo e aunque prefero os álbums tradicionais, a fin de todo, o creatividade vale moito no mundo músico. Tambén, para me, é un poco "easy listening" nunha xénero con influencia amplio do jazz.
