Reviews (page 4 of 8)
El rock alternatiu dels 80 en el seu pinacle creatiu. I va haver uns quants artistes i discos que van estar a la seva alçada aquells anys, com Pixies o Hüsker Du, però molt pocs el van millorar
New to me - punkish? Worth hearing again.
Listening to this album was a strange experience. I'll love one song, really dislike a couple then suddenly something amazing happens. I could imagine I would have loved this to death if I had caught it at the right time of my life. As it is there's definitely a few songs on here that could make it into my daily rotation, even if it's unlikely I'll ever play the whole album again. I really didn't know whether to give it a 3 or a 4 but ended up plumping for 4 because there's enough moments in here that I absolutely loved, even if the album made me work for them! Unsatisfied has gone straight into my list of favourite songs ever.
Very earnest hearland rock, punk. Kind of like a proto Gaslight Anthem to me. I'm not sure how I feel about the jokey songs being here, but it's hard to deny that they're still just as strong. Favorite tracks: "Androgenous", "Answering Machine", "Sixteen Blue", "Unsatisfied"
Outstanding! Standouts: I Will Dare, Androgynous, 20th Century Boy Others: Favorite Thing, We're Comin' Out, Black Diamond, Unsatisfied, Sixteen Blue, Answering Machine Favorite Track: Androgynous Rating: 4/5
First track is a mega tune. Thomas was always playing that walk walk in the light ah tune on the bass. I would make the fuck out of track 3. Track 5 is such a banging ballad. vocals are mega impressive this just sounds good. Oh lovely I also know track 7. What a tune. unsatisfied is a bleedin song of a lifetime fuck uyeah. im so im so unsatisfied. what an absolute album chock a block with mega tunes. I am satisfied. what more can you want. the guitar is great. there is so much passion in the vocals of androgynous. sixteen blue might be my favourite song on the album. the alt vocal version performance is maybe even better. structuring isn't incredible. bit of whiplash from Garys got a boner to sixteen blue. unsatisfied goes noticeably well into seen your video though so its forgiven. serious banger of an album.
Good stuff.
This was a fun album. If I was a 10 years older I would have been very into this band as a kid. I liked the lyrics, progressive and cheeky. I did not like the vocals though, could not understand anything he said. Luckily I listen to this album with lyrics. Would have scored less if I wasn't paying attention to lyrics.
A classic killer album that hits you quick and easy. Listened to this about 5 times before I knew it. Always excellent.
Really strong album with a great mix of alt-rock styles. They’ve got plenty of punk riffs and an impish sense of humor. And man, these guys can really unleash some stadium-sized hard rock too (like on “Black Diamond” -- apparently a Kiss cover). But at the heart of it all is strong songwriting. Lead singer Paul Westerberg has some wail! One of those voices that makes me think, “How does he perform like that without hurting himself?”
Hey, you can't just take an album title from the Beatles! Especially if you sound nothing like them! But really though, this was a good album. I'd never heard of this band before, but I quite like their sound. Catchy, peppy, full of energy. And then they made me cry with 'Androgynous.' Wtf, how dare they. Great album.
Never listened to the replacements before, really enjoyed this, feels like one of those bridge albums between 70’s punk and 90’s alt rock, almost got the full 5 stars, but probably being overly harsh but Gary’s got a boner stops this being a true masterpiece
I like this record, though it tends to be a bit more shambolic than I'd like - it sounds like a band trying out a lot of different sounds, which fits with the Replacements sound on their early albums. But it works as a whole and shows a band that's influenced by everything from punk to bubblegum pop to corporate arena rock to whatever else floated through Paul Westerberg's transom.
Pretty good album with a nice mix of styles and very entertaining songs
Great. Jumps around a lot but I always love the sound of early alt rock
One of the best bands in the 80s. A bit like R.E.M but with some more grit to it! This record is great and features some very catchy, powerful, anthemic songs! The themes are pretty straight forward and not too cryptic. But that's perfectly fine, and it makes the songs more enjoyable to be honest! The guitars are amazing and the rhythm section is incredibly steady! Favorite lyrics: - How do you say you're okay to an answering machine? - Try and free a slave of ignorance. Try and teach a whore about romance. Key tracks: I Will Dare, Favorite Thing, Androgynous, Unsatisfied, Seen Your Video, Sixteen Blue, Answering Machine. 8,5 out of 10
I like the sound! Angsty exciting 80s rock, really fun
Richtig guter Punk/Rock/Pop Mix. Hat auch ein paar schwächere Lieder, reicht aber noch dicke für 4.
This is one of my favorite albums of the 80s. The Replacements made a raw, powerful record here. Tracks like Androgynous, Unsatisfied and Sixteen Blue are incredible songs. Very close to being a 5 but had to settle for a 4 star rating.
I had to listen to this one twice before I rated it, and I'm still not sure what to give it. It is at its core pretty good post-punk with some shining moments of great. But it is also a surprisingly socially progressive album that I quite liked. But kinda half zoning out my first listen and then suddenly being bombarded with chants of "Gary's Got A Boner" was shocking. I think it gets a 4 because with that I'm more likely to go back and give it an additional listen.
Banger
I'll take this Let It Be over that other Let It Be.
De va canska dope trummorna va spännande 4
Now THIS is what I call pop-punk. Earnest and full of attitude whilst having a sensibility for good melodies and catchy songs. Lovely album
Skivan äger! Gillar inspelningskvalitén, bande e jättebra, låtarna utpräglade o sångaren swag! Bra jobbat, The Replacements.
Need to listen again
Probably would have been a 3 but damn if Androgynous wasn't super ahead of its time.
favorite tracks - i will dare, favorite thing, seen your video least favorite tracks - n/a
On first listen this came across as sloppy and unexceptional, but a second listen revealed more of its charms. I think I prefer their more thoughtful tracks, overall. Fave track - "Answering Machine" is the standout, but "Unsatisfied" and "I Will Dare" are both good too...
Heavily recommend the No Dogs in Space episode on the boys. Really helps me appreciate the edge and roughness of their music. They have such a genuine approach to creation that shows a bit of their wildness. Just a great, palpable energy flowing through the album. Hearing the band enjoying themselves so much, while also tacking some subjects with emotional depth due to Paul Westerberg’s writing creates such a great experience. Faves: Sixteen Blue, Black Diamond, Unsatisfied, Androgynous, I Will Dare, We’re Comin Out
Brash and angsty, this was a refreshing surprise
Catchy energetic post punk. Will listen again
I’ve certainly heard of The Replacements, but I’m not sure if I’ve actually listen to their music before. I’m very familiar with the song Androgynous, but that is due to the Joan Jett cover. I’m excited to hear the origin of this song, as well as the rest of the album! Songs I already knew: Androgynous (but not this version) Favourites: Androgynous, Unsatisfied, Gary’s Got A Boner Firstly, Androgynous sounds very different here to what I’m used to. It’s much more stripped back and minimalistic, and it works really well. If you aren’t familiar with this song, it’s all about breaking gender norms and just being who you want to be rather than what society dictates you should be. There is a great variety of songs to be found here, as we also have the tongue in cheek punk rock track Gary’s Got A Boner which is great fun. Overall, a very good punk album and an easy recommend to anybody that enjoys the genre.
Odličan album! Uvijek mi se sviđao cover albuma. (btw. par sati nije radila stranica, bio sam u deliriju!)
Absolutely a great band, i started listening the them in the early 80s watching and listening to them mature into a more melodic band. Not one of my favorite albums of the band but far from their worse. This band still rates high in my book
..
This was fun, snotty pop punk. Good variety throughout too keep things interesting, guitar was on point and vocals were great. This album was dumb in a good way, super creative and witty. Excited to listen to more of their work. 4 stars!
This was a pretty good album that I enjoyed. Punk without much (if any pop), I can see myself listening to this one again
This is basically all I want from my alternative rock/punk record. To the point, without any real filler and just filled with energy and great musicianship. The only time I almost lose interest is when the band focus too hard on their punk roots on “Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out” and “Gary’s Got a Boner”. Other than that I really enjoy Westerberg’s vocals and the first trio of songs, ending with the amazing “We’re Coming Out”, and the middle section with “Androgynous”, the great Kiss cover “Black Diamond” and “Unsatisfied” is unbelievably good.
Pretty enjoyable punk rock. Interesting to hear different influences in it. Sounds like there's inspiration from 60s-70s rock and even 80s metal kind of sounds. A fun listen and interesting lyrics as well
The Replacements, although critically acclaimed, never got the mass appreciation that they deserved in my opinion. This is a great album that moves between post-punk and power pop. Paul Westerberg was (and still is) a brilliant songwriter. His lyrics are insightful, witty, sarcastic and satirical. Read the lyrics to Androgynous -- he wrote this almost 40 years ago! Pretty incredible. Yes, some of the songs are a bit silly, but so what? It's great rock and roll. This band didn't last nearly long enough.
Sounds like the clash, Black flag, and Lou reed all fused into one. Not my personal preference but clearly a good album with amusing lyrics and emotional highs and lows. I’ll probably never listen again but I could see why someone else would.
onhan tää hyvä. kunnon albumi. hyvä että on sopivasti räkää
I don't normally listen to the punk end of the rock spectrum, so I was surprised to find myself digging many of these tunes. Could it be that they got something right? Let's say yes.
Another one of those bands whose name I know and who have a few songs that I'm familiar with but don't really know them all that well. I enjoyed this. Went back and listened to their earlier, more punk stuff. As much as I think I prefer that, it shows how, on this record, the band is growing trying new things, stylistically.
Not my favourite Replacements album, but still damn good. It is a little too heavy at points. Is this The Replacements heavy metal album? Though nothing as classic as Left of the Dial still some classic tracks here; Waitress in the Sky, Unsatisfied, I Willl Dare, Androgonous, Answering machine. 4.5 stars
So many other 'Mats records could/should be in this list but this is completely worthy candidate. A sometimes great, sometimes indifferent band that is perhaps the essential '80s indie rock band – “Unsatisfied” and, “I Will Dare” “Androgynous,” “Seen Your Video” “Sixteen Blue” and “Answering Machine” all very strong, too.
Solid punk rock album.
Very good album, a bit uneven though.
Love it, so raw and sensible
I liked this one a lot. It's definitely an album I will come back to later on. Favourite bits from the record: I Will Dare, Androgynous, Unsatisfied
Great album by a band I was not familiar with! It makes me want to learn more about the Replacements for sure. Punk rock is definitely the genre I would put them in (hard to deny that), but this album definitely leans more into indie rock with a bit of Springsteen thrown in there. I have a feeling that if I went back and listened to their work prior to this record that it would be more raw/unhinged like the Sex Pistols or the Clash; while that feeling was present in both the vocals and the instruments, it felt overall more mature and grounded than what I would expect out of a band like this (except for 'Gary's Got a Boner' which contrasted with most of the other songs on the album). The singer's voice reminded me a lot of a young Gene Simmons, but he was easier to take seriously. This connection I made seemed much weirder when I got to the 'Black Diamond' cover on this album; I actually feel that this cover is much stronger than the original KISS version which I have never been the biggest fan of. I was a fan of all of the tracks, but the opener and 'Androgynous' were two of the standouts. 'Androgynous' was VERY progressive for 1984, and I can see why it would be the highest streamed song off of this album for this reason. Overall, I definitely enjoyed this record and could see myself coming back to it in the future. 4/5. NOTE: They should've picked a different album name for sure as 1) it doesn't really fit any of the core themes of the album and 2) it could get easily confused with the late record by The Beatles. Maybe they picked this title ironically? Who knows.
When I received this album Friday morning, I thought: ok, it's some ugly brother of THE "Let it Be." I was not wrong, and this was awesome. A great piece of late punk songs (post-punk, according to Wikipedia) that made me feel like it was in the 80s. Much rawer than its shine brother album and enjoyable as hell. I'll keep an eye on other albums from "The Replacements." 4 stars
Enjoyed this one. Will listen again.
It’s quintessential post punk/indie rock not much else to say. If you’re into those genres it’s a must listen
cool rock album
New one for me but a great post punk Album. I really liked its Dynamism, and the pure energy of this post punk power-pop classic. Has a touch of Elvis Costello and the attractions about it. loved "I Will Dare" (Great Bass-line) the Knack-like "Favourite Thing" The plaintive "Unsatisfied" and the Humorous "Gary's Got A Boner" are all quality tunes. A nice new experience for this listener and I will definitely look out for more Replacements stuff to add to my collection.
Very few complaints - this is a surprisingly good album.
This is a very digestible punk album. lots of sonic grit that is mixed very well, 3 tracks in.
Aggressive, catchy and raw—but still leaves room for softer tones. Makes me want to hit the dance floor and run some hot laps. We’re comin out!
Awesome album. Really enjoyed it and would give it a higher score but alas no nips on the cover so only a 4 from me
A bop
Fun pop punk. I had no clue that Androgynous was originally on this album and that the Joan Jett version was a cover.
Some early 80s alt rock with punk DNA thrown in. I dig it. Favorites: "Androgynous", "Black Diamond", "Unsatisfied"
This shit fucking slaps! Never spent much time with The Replacements, glad they came up on this list!
A case can be made that few, if any, ‘80s band are truer to the core essence – the raw soul – of rock and roll than the ‘Mats. That’s true both in spirit and execution. There’s skiffle and punk and early rave up in it. Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Hamburg Beatles, early Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis – all of these would have endorsed what Westerburg & co. were up to. “Unsatisfied” is an all-time personal fave, “I Will Dare” a great opener, and “Androgynous,” “Seen Your Video” “Sixteen Blue” and “Answering Machine” very good, too. Westerburg could be RnR HoF for songwriting reasons alone, and the band in the antics division. There were more very strong (and more polished) records to come, a few of which could easily be in this list.
Enjoyed it. Nice and short and definitely dealt with topics very much ahead of the time.
More fun than I was expecting. Definitely not perfect, but I understand the cult appeal.
Never really listened to this band. Love the record title. Who gives a shit if the Beatles did it already? That's a statement. This record has a lot of charm. When I first started listening, I thought it was just sloppy early 90s music. Then, I realized its deceptively-proficient early 80s music with a singer that blends Springsteen, Petty and Cobain (not yet a glimmer in popular music's eye), into a really compelling front person.
Con buenas pinceladas de punk
Nothing on this really stood out for me - it was nice, but not memorable. 7/10.
I took a short break when this came up, mainly because I got a bit ill. Mind, I was also wondering what I wanted to say about this album. This album really did require several listens for me to comprehend my thoughts fully, but it turned out my opinion is not as effusive as the critical standard for Let It Be. This is not to slam the album. Much on the album to like, indeed love, and it's a firm 4-starrer. But US college rock has never seduced me. I can accept R.E.M. did a few worthwhile albums in the 80s, but I'm not going to cream my jeans over every song they produced then. And The Replacements have a similar fault to R.E.M.: they are just a bit too clever-clever, rather than just clever. The title, on its own, stands right on the boundary of inspired and smug. The wilfully puerile Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out and Gary's Got a Boner, likewise, straddle that boundary with a nut on each side. But these and others, in aggregate, make the album a tiny bit irritating. Also, ask yourself this: can you sincerely, hand on heart, give 5 stars to an album that gives a songwriting credit to Ted Nugent?
Not their best but still pretty good.
Fun, rock and roll
Really great garage band vibe. Unpretentious
sounds like it was literally recorded in a garage and i absolutely loved it
One of the great "I'm an angry white American young man" albums out there. "I Will Dare", "Unsatisfied", "Androgynous" and "Answering Machine" are absolute classics, but the whole album is great. It was also ahead of its time both for the lyrics and the music. Grunge bands obviously took notes from The Replacements. I could go on for hours about that album, a real gem.
Nice punk rock album, it's stand out.
Unfortunately, I did not know this group and it was missing in my musical knowledges. I found The Replacements to have a phenomenal energy, they are punchy and quirky while maintaining a very standard formula for a rock band. I loved it.
I'm not a *huge* fan of this band, but *Let It Be* is the perfect midway point in their story, between their early hardcore punk shenanigans and their more pop-sounding rockers (without too much cheese here). And like someone else pointed out in the group, a song like Androgynous has lyrics that are still on point decades later (not to mention its atmosphere). A great example of what sorts of wonders adolescent angst can do in music. I would also add the punk band... Adolescents to that category, with their eponymous album. That one is *criminally* overlooked in this list (and many other ones like that !)... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: more than 900, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter
Not my favourite Replacements album but still really good. Love the Kiss cover. Androgynous and Unsatisfied are classics all in a a very enjoyable album 4 🌟
Mediocre punk with a couple bangers mixed in.
With one foot out the punk door and one foot in what would become the alternative scene, The Replacements provided a template for what would happen when a band gets captured not in the throes of dissolution but in the moment where things begin to look up. 33 minutes of pendulum swinging punk ferocity and pensive perspective that's rightly regarded as one of the best examples of 80s rock. Favorites: I Will Dare, Androgynous, Black Diamond, Unsatisfied, Seen Your Video, Sixteen Blue.
Ok
Good energy. Captured the alt sound of the time as well as any group.
I don't know how I completely missed this. An excellent album.
Definitely one that deserves another listen
You know, that wasn't bad at all. Kinda poppy, kinda punk, all-around enjoyable. Quite liked it.
THIS IS SO PUNK ROCK
Genre: Alternative Rock 4/5 Upon receiving yet another 80s alt rock album, I was in a rather sour mood going into this, praying that it was anything other than what I've been given so far in this exercise. To my surprise, this was a very enjoyable album, that certainly goes beyond just a standard alt rock label. This album has quite the variety. Songs like We're Comin' Out pack a hell of a punch and include some really outrageous solo work, songs like Black Diamond which have guitar tones that sound like they were ripped from albums of the future, and songs like Sixteen Blue which is so proto-Nirvana it's scary. This album kept me entertained the entire way through. They'd throw you a ballad, then go ahead and sing Gary's Got a Boner. Not a perfect album, but a surprisingly enjoyable listen, and one I'll certainly come back to in the future.
Alright rock n roll vibes, guess they didn’t blow up
This was a fun listen.
Ah heck yeah! I'd completely forgotten the Replacements existed, thank you album generator :D
#16. More punky than I expected
Like the Beatles but a couple decades older I guess
Gloriously sloppy, rockin, perceptive, juvenile, sensitive. The Replacements here are all that and more. Favorite Thing, Unsatisfied, Tommy Got His Tonsils Out, Androgynous, and even Black Diamond(a Kiss cover). Are they the world’s best rock band or a bunch of hard drinking idiots? Yes they are!
Who are they replacing hey? Kurt Zouma kicked a cat, should they replace him at West Ham? Thomas Muller sold some horse spunk, should they replace him at Bayern Munich? SHACK never writes any reviews, should they replace him in this group? You decide.
a decent punk album with very nice lyrical content
Som punk maneiro
Whoa, nice! I've heard this one before, I had to check it out after I became obsessed with "Unsatisfied." These guys are a great indie punk-ish band with a lot of talent, though in my ears the gulf between "Unsatisfied" and pretty much everything else on the album is pretty wide. That's not to say I didn't enjoy a lot of the album though, because I did! I have a strong attachment to that one track, as well as "Bastards of Young" (not on this album) due to their appearance in Adventureland, one of the greatest movies ever made. I enjoyed more tracks than I remember liking the first time around, and that's a great thing. Really dig this one. Favorite tracks: Unsatisfied, Favorite Thing, Sixteen Blue, Black Diamond, Androgynous. Album art: Really like this one, blue scale band photo on the roof of a suburban house. As all punky type rock bands should do. 4/5
Genuinely fun listen, very pop-oriented by modern standards and something I imagine influenced a lot of the alt-rock and post-punk artists of the 2000's and 2010's. Nice little flavor bursts of blues/folk influences sprinkled throughout too, which was surprising.
Man, I'd love to just go drive around and listen to these songs. Love that tone.
My tee time is at 1!
1984 - Rock, Punk rock, Alternative rock, Indie rock, College rock
Some catchy lyrics
A really good album post punk can be very divisive but this is just good music played well it doesnt soften too much that it loses its roots
Great album. Heard the name before, but never gave them a good listen. Glad I did
Un popurrí curioso de rock-indie-punk... Me ha gustado.
definitely more fun than i expected. answering machine is a great closer. unsatisfied is a gem
Rough and rusty. I really enjoyed every chapter’s element of surprise, especially the slow burning ‘unsatisfied’.
Some notes before starting, looks like a generic 80s Bon Jovi style rock band based on the cover. Short album, 11 songs at 2-4 minutes apiece, and Gary's Got a Boner is an amazing song title. Alright let's start listening. I'm liking the guitars here, singer has a bit of a punk rasp, this almost seems like very early pre-grunge seems more 90s than 80s. Good energy, I'm definitely digging this. A few slower tunes, kind of reminds me of the Pogues in a way. Overall good album, definitely not what I expected at first was pleasantly surprised.
Fascinating album - ahead of their time in so many ways; lyrical content, song structure, atmosphere - could be a college band from the nineties. Definitely a band and album to explore further.
First ever listening. I like it a lot. There's a bit of the Clash there, and other inflluences too, but they do their own thing.
4.1 - Took me more than a week and several listens to form an opinion on this. It's not a sound I prefer immediately but I quickly recognized that there's something special here. I really love some of these songs. Above all, "Androgynous" is just such a testament to tolerance and empathy - for 1986, it feels decades ahead of its time. "Answering Machine" captures the moody insecurity when we allow technology to separate us. There are also some fun bops - "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out."
Fucking class
Really good album.
Andro. Rte Bayou St John
4/5 - Good, but muddied
Enjoyed this. Dodgy 80s production and a couple of duds, but good stuff.
Punk possibilitando ter melodia
Enjoyed this! Will be digging in to more of their stuff for sure
Not heard of this before… for some reason I always thought they were an Irish blues band. I enjoyed this album… definitely listen again!
It was overall solid, a good mix of "alternative" (pre-dating the musical style) and punk music. There's a few songs I really dug, and I can definitely see the influence on alternative music from the '90's.
Banging post-punk with funny but still meaningful lyrics. Definitely can see the influence down the line.
Pretty great album. Would listen again.
Head bobbin to it. Rocking. Sick vibe to it
Sick
Nice album, bad quality
cutesy
A N D R O G Y N O U S Fun album and a great read on Wikipedia. These guys are too cool for their own good
Хз, тоже самое что предыдущий. Звучание бодрое, но посыл я так и не вкурил
Let It Be looms large among '80s rock albums, generally regarded as one of the greatest records of the decade. So large is its legend and so universal its acclaim that all the praise tends to give the impression that the Replacements' fourth album was designed as a major statement, intended to be something important when its genius, like so many things involving the 'Mats, feels accidental. There's just enough angst and tastelessness to have the album speak to teenagers of all generations and just enough complicated emotion to make this music resonate with listeners long past those awkward years, whether they grew up with this album or not.
Didn’t realise Unsatisfied was by them.
Good album all the way through and very different sounding throughout. Lyrically good. Not as exciting as I hope post-punk to be but thats ok
I love Paul Westerberg
If I had never heard The Replacements before I probably would have thought it was a 90s album. Can hear their influence in a lot of 90s and 00s indie rock. Weezer, Cake, I guess the Pixies too but they were only a few years later. Fun album, 4 stars.
I liked this!
Finally an album i've listened all the way through before! It's great, and its influence on indie music in general was huge.
Your parents will HATE these guys! Edgy, loud, proud, punk rock (kinda)! There's a lot of energy packed into this album and I can respect it. It also has a certain amount of polish not normally found in most albums like it, so it's got a lot going for it imo. Yeah, this kicks ass.
Theres a lot of fun to be had on this album, with really only the first and last songs being my complaints here. Most of the album I found a mix of endearing punk, alt, and indie influences
Heerlijk, deze band had ik al wel eerder willen leren kennen.
Its always refreshing to recognize the first song off an album, particularly when you are not expecting it. I Will Dare was definitely the standout on the album. 3.5 but going to round up because nothing else grabbed me like the first song but still good overall
When it came to music, my dad always used to say say “you don’t know what you love, you love what you know”, and I’ve known this album for a long time. It has a familiar comfort that brings me me back to my college days. A lot of good songs, but for me the highlight is their cover of the KISS classic “Black Diamond”. 3.5 and of course you round up!
Solid and more varied than most punk outings
Excellent.
Naming this album Let It Be and then doing a Kiss cover (Black Diamond) on it told me a lot about the mentality of this band, and that I just thought they were funny. Westerberg's voice is so ragged that it gives a sort of desperation to all of his songs. I feel its particularly effective on the slower more tender tracks like "Androgynous," and "Unsatisfied." Gives them a lot of sincerity. One of my favorite artists does a great cover of "Androgynous" so I was already a big fan of that song, but other standouts for me were "I will Dare," and "Unsatisfied." Very cool to hear what it sounds like when a bunch of punks are breaking out of their punk chains and writing heartfelt songs.
Pretty good post punk. Lyrics are shockingly modern and woke.
Happy!
Punkish rock, nice crunchy guitars, some dissonance and interesting arrangements. A little depressing and angry.
Great discovery! Heard of them before but this was the first tune truly exploring them, and they are a cool band! Unique guitar work and melodies, while rooted in punk rock.
The first few tracks didn't grab me, but I eventually got there. I feel like I gotta throw some love to the Replacements becuase they're a minnesota band that the scene loves, but I've never been too familiar with em. The back half of this album is where it really shines to me - especially obviously Androgynous, plus Black Diamond and Unsatisfied. Also really loved the long jam for 2/3 of Seen Your Video. You can really hear the energy of these punks even as they're writing more sincere songs using not just aggression. || A great album with a few duds from a cool band that made an impact on the scene and music as a whole. Feels like a textbook 4, so that's what it's getting from me.
This was excellent I thought - listened twice. I recognised two songs anyway, but enjoyed the rest too. Light rock and tuneful
It’s good but I really don’t understand all the boners people get
Owned this years ago, I can't remember the format, probably cassette given the time, anyway I don't have it anymore. I really loved it though and listening again after many years it definitely holds up.
Pretty good. Heard a few of the songs. Funny I never knew they were from Mpls. I'd say like a 3.5 or so. I Will Dare is probably my favorite track, following Unsatisfied. There's enough heart here that makes me push it up to 4. Live woulda been sick.
Eddie Vedder / Pearl Jam vibes all over it, especially on Sixteen Blue (also my highlight). Answering Machine and 20th Century Boy were also cool. I think I preferred all the outakes/demos over the final tracks, especially Answer Machine and Sixteen Blue.
Really rad. Timeless piece on gender and a very dated bit on answering machines.
This was really good and exactly why I am enjoying doing this whole thing. Never heard of this album before but really liked it.
1st half is just ok aside from "Androgynous." 2nd half saves it. Important record, but a weird one.
Cool album. loved the first 5 tracks or so then it got mostly just "ok"
Another cool post-punk pre-alternative album. I thought this one was interesting. There are times when it sounds like Bruce Springsteen, albeit with much different subject matter. It's easy to see the seeds of a lot of the music I grew up with in the 90s in this album. It goes by really fast, but every song is solid 4/5
Paul Westerberg's voice is so cool. Best track: Unsatisfied
Tuli fiilis, että tää oli grungen edelläkävijä tai ainakin grunge ottanut vaikutteita. Hyvä levy ja meni tallennetuille soittolistoille
Not really great but not bad
Сара опет није слушала, баш јој нешто не иде слушање овије дана Марко 3-------------
Promising opening then it seemed to be sliding into repetitive punk numbers but went in a few other interesting directions.
Sounds like the closing credits song on every edgy 1980s film ever... In fairness they seem to have got to this particular sound five years before anyone else did so an extra point for mot being derivative.
Taking the title of a Beatles album is a bold move. Unfortunately this mediocre indie punk album just doesn’t reach the heights I would assume it would. Decent showing but just not enough
eh
This album definitely reminds me of the punk sounds of the 80's, which makes sense since it is from 1984. My favorite track was Sixteen Blue. I don't think I'd go out of my way to listen to it again, though I would say I found it more listen-able to my tastes than some of the other albums I've rated at 3 stars. I guess I'd go with a 3.5 star if there were one.
Thought this was okay. Didn’t love or hate it.
SEE?? I'M CATCHING UP ALRIGHT. Seen your video UUUUUFFF lol I didn't even realize when I finished the album Mmmm, not really memorable so...mmm 3
7.7
Eh it's good rock i guess
Decent punk record, not all perfect but nice. 3/5
My rating 3.2. The ‘Mats raw and unfiltered. Like their later stuff better.
Interesting, never heard of them, quite like it, but feels like half an album of good songs and then some random thrashing to make up the numbers.
This sounds like your mate's band playing out of his dad's garage.
Gonna get my Gen X card revoked, but I've never gotten the hype for these guys. They're fine.
A very simple and to the point review for a very simple and to the point album: it was good, had a great energy and a really solid raw punkness to it. Nothing hugely special but a good punk album is a good punk album.
I nearly dig it. Some of the songs are very good. The whole is too messy for me. A bit of polish and this would've come out real nice.
Correcto
Was OK, I might listen again. 7/10 or 3/5.
overall kinda rocking sometimes.
Why do I have to listen to EVERY SINGLE post-punk album EVER MADE before I die? This is one of the better ones, but tell me you grew up a huge post-punk/pop-rock fan in the '80's without saying it. Oh wait. That's what this list is.
Was grumpy to get it but ended up liking it.
I had a good time.
2.7 2x
no strong feelings one way or the other on this album, maybe a little annoying but I just don't like punk Would I listen again: no Deserves to be on this list: doesn't seem like it 2.7
Pretty cool, basic

Springsteen punk.
I can hear early Goo
Iconic 80s sound. High 3+.
Jesus bro wtf did your answering machine ever do to you
pretty good
Genre-bending album. Keep flip flopping between 3/4 rating
A pretty typical choice for this list--post punk. Never really listened to them before, so glad to know what they sound like. Sort of Husker Du a bit. I liked Unsatisfied and Sixteen Blue. Other songs were a little uneven. I know it is on a lot of best of lists, and I gather if you went to college in the mid-80's and worked for the college radio station this would be your jam.
Imagine naming your album after one of the great albums from maybe the greatest band of all time.... There's nothing wrong with this album, but it doesn't come close to its namesake. 3.5 stars rounded down
Súper adelantados a su época porque suenan noventeros/dosmileros.
rock opote nai
Not bad, not great.
Let It Be by The Replacements sounds like the exact opposite of a carefully crafted classic, which is precisely why it became one. The production is rough to the point of sounding half-finished — muffled vocals, flat drums, guitars that blur together into a drunken roar — but the ramshackle feel gives the album its personality. Beneath all the husky screaming and basement-level chaos, you can hear the DNA of ’90s alternative rock being formed in real time. The Replacements weren’t interested in polish; they were chasing emotion, and somehow the sloppiness makes the songs hit harder. The band is at its best whenever it slows down long enough to let the melodies breathe. “I Will Dare” kicks things off with a wiry, almost rockabilly-style riff that feels loose and infectious, while “Sixteen Blue” leans into jangly guitars that practically predict the next decade of college radio. The standout is “Unsatisfied,” a messy anthem of frustration and longing that turns repetition into emotional exhaustion by the song’s closing stretch. Let It Be may sound like it’s perpetually on the verge of collapse, but that instability is exactly what gives it its lasting charm.
terminou o album e eu não soube dizer bem qual a vibe que a banda quis passar. mas é um album okzinho.
Meh, What did they replace? Did they try to replace the Beatles with Let it Be? Probs not, but They're not replacing any of my music tastes.
Enjoyable! But not memorable. Probably deserved a closer listen than I gave it while making breakfast for Mother’s Day. 7/10 Quite Likeable
Just okay - I’m sure it was influential at the time but it sounds quite generic now
At times it sounds like Bryan Adams, and at others REM. There’s a few decent songs: we’re coming out, black diamond, and Gary’s got a boner, but overall it’s very uneven. ⭐️⭐️.5
I quite liked this - quite varied and I liked the raggedness of his voice. Not my usual choice but a 3 nonetheless
A lovely three stars❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Tom.
3,5⭐️ oye muy guai no me mata ninguna canción pero es muy disfrutable
It's alright I guess, kind of annoying and messy.
The Replacements sure have an interesting sound, they first-most have punk attitude but the songs themselves are bit more complicated then that. Like the song "We're Comin' Out" shows more the punk side then that's contrasted with the song "Androgynous" that is a straight ballad track with little - if any - guitar; which quite shocked me to be honest. I think the album got better as it went on, the first third of the album was a bit shoddy and then the second and third thirds only improved. The vocals are top notch and are one of my favourite aspects of the album. The rasp, the ruggedness but yet so, so melodic, he's kind of like the American Joe Strummer - which is a plus from me. One thing to say is that this album - Let It Be - is a hell of a lot better than another album that has the same name that released in 1970 (love most of their other stuff except for their final album.) I suspect this is one of those albums that grow on you rather than one that is an instant favourite. Strong 3 star album. Highlight Song/s: "Favorite Thing", "Seen Your Video" and "Gary's Got a Boner"
3,5
Honesto
Pretty fun listen. I was not big into them at the time, but some friends were. I might some back to this at some point.
Never heard of this before. This peaked in the middle rather with the Androgyny and the Unsatisfied song rather, which is better than peaking early. It had aspects of stuff from 10 years after it's release, which I guess means it's visionary or something, but I don't like the 90s stuff yaknow solo. Overall enough good to give it a pass though and a good length.
I like the sound of the replacements. This album didn’t catch my attention very often though.
fun 7/10
3.5./5
Feels like a good garage band. I would give it 3.5 if I could
I would have enjoyed this more if it was one style the whole way through.
Some of the songs are a little too wild lyrics-wise for me. But the songs instrumentally were good!
Stopped midway for a meeting and forgot to go back and finish it
3.5
3/5
Not bad
I enjoyed the album. The Replacements always seemed to be JUST on the cusp of something bigger.
Needs another listen when I’m not working but enjoyed the parts I could actively listen to.
7,5/10 Highlights: Favorite Thing Unsatisfied Sixteen Blue
First I’ve heard of these and curious to see what greets me. Let’s go… Feels a little more well known than first appeared to me and maybe more punk than I was expecting (based on nothing at all!) enjoyed the change of tempo and flow of ‘We’re Coming Out.’ It’s all enjoyable enough, but nothing knocking me over sideways. Which is usually my 3.5 rating. Half way through… Quite enjoy the change up at times. Breaks it up nicely and reminds me it’s one thing missing from some of the more poorly rated albums on here. Maybe close to a 4, but not quite. (3.5)
Highlights: I Will Dare, Favorite Thing, Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, Black Diamond It began as a couple of standard new wave love songs, but as it progressed it got surprisingly more punk-like while also sounding like Rick Springfield and Weezer at the same time. So just when I thought the band was aiming to make some brainless fun record they start to be philosophical smartasses on Androgynous and a couple of other tracks. The sound was really dope but overall the record was a bit too messy for me to call it a masterpiece. There however are very interesting bits everywhere and I believe that a couple of the highlights will remain in rotation.
3/5
pleasant punk
Pretty good, just some stinkers that lowered the rating
This album is making me understand what people see in the band. There is a wide range, strong songs and some fun. Will return.
It’s good, but nothing “grabbed” me. I can imagine having it on in the background and leaving it at that.
Sounds a little generic, but it still enjoyed it. Feels pretty ahead of its time, especially with tracks like Androgynous.
a band of heard of but never listened to and I wasn’t aware that Paul Westerberg, who I do know from his 2 songs on the Singles OST is the vocalist and guitarist here. I can hear the lineage from this to those as the brand of post punk here definitely has a poppier edge to it. It’s a cool listen, I’d be interested to hear more.
I've seen this album while flicking through my copy of the book, though aside from that I've never heard of this band or album before. Going off of the album cover, I think it's pretty obvious that this is going to be a punk album thanks to those hideous mullets. Here goes. Yep. On the money, though I do hear a bit of a jangle pop sound tucked in here. This was a competent album. Certainly a decent listen with a short and sweet runtime. It's a little hit or miss, however. Westerberg's vocals are a real polariser. I alternate between thinking that they're either competent or a little too much by the track. He has a squeaky breathiness which really gets on my nerves sometimes. Fortunately, the instrumentals are more on the straight and narrow. The guitars are decent. They have a lot of bite and kick to them, and I appreciate the variety across the tracks. I just don't feel too strongly about this kind of music, which is what significantly drags it down in my eyes. Still, this album was decent. Book time. "It has been well documented that, depending on what night you saw them, The Replacements could have been the world's best or worst rock band. Their unpredictable and often very drunken antics meant that anything could and often did happen during their live shows." That's funny. I wish I could see what a trainwreck concert of theirs looks like, but I doubt I'd be successful in finding any footage. The book also says that this was their breakthrough release and was "...an album that straddled the band's punk days and the more melodic and sensitive songs that would come to define their later career." Topped many year-end charts for critics and helped to establish the burgeoning genre of college rock. Their cover of "Black Diamond" by Kiss caused Gene Simmons to storm out of a club upon hearing it being performed live. That's funny. Anyways, this is a solid pick. I cosign this inclusion.
It is, I suppose, the 2nd best album called Let it Be. Is it garage music if that's where it sounds as if it was recorded? Energetic and enthusiastic, sloppy stuff. Apart from Androgynous, which sticks out like the proverbial, this seems a lot like stuff others have down better. The two covers are a case in point. KISS did Black Diamond and T-Rex did 20th Century Boy with a degree of polish these guys don't seem capable of. It's enjoyable enough and simple, Dumb fun, but I might stick with the Rooftop Concert, thanks.
If every track was as good as the the first one, I Will Dare, this would be five stars. Unfortunately, they are not. Five star song, the album is like, 3 1/2 stars.
Decent enough. Bros got a boner - better make a song about it. 2.5/5
I prefer albums like Tim, or Hootenany. This is fine though, but don’t get too much of the hype
Ok, but nothing special - missed why it is seen as a great album
*1984. American punk. *This got old fast. This is the type of aggressive, chaotic punk I just don’t love. *Androgynous is an oddly good song. *Enjoyable in small doses for me. RATING - 5.5
Decent 80s punk, not ground breaking or unique, but enjoyed it.
I definitely preferred the more "sincere" songs, those caught in the middle between punk and hair rock. This album was a pleasant surprise.
Good album but I feel like it was missing something
Okay
Fun album
Some tracks were better than others. Sounded like a transitions album between 80s rock and what was to become 90s indie at times.
There were tracks on this that were really quite good, it started off as a nice surprise. But then there were some absolute dumpster fires on here too which completely ruined it
Album 65 Top 3 favorites off the album: Androgynous, Answering Machine, Sixteen Blue My dad has this album, and I think it's in his car right now. He skips around a lot though, like a manual playlist across the 6 CDs he has in his car, so I've never gotten the chance to listen to the album all the way through. Thanks to my dad, I know The Replacements were influenced early on by Hüsker Dü and the hardcore punk scene up in Minnesota around that time, but then kind of went off in their own direction instead of staying hard and fast. I'm glad they did, because I don't think I would've been able to do a full album of them at their heaviest today. Or at all, maybe, but that's okay. I think the variation made it a much better album. It kept me more engaged I have a fondness for them because of my dad. I don't have anything incredible to say. I think there's good guitar work, I like that there's variation in the amount of distortion, I like that some songs are funny, and it's a good album. Yay!
Decent album. Some good songs but nothing great.
This was a solid little pop rock item. Not super memorable. Well made, a little garage-y. It was all decent with some good moments and solid playing throughout.
I feel like if I was 10 years older this is the kind of music I would've listened to. It's like almost pre-grunge, just not sad enough really. I normally don't bother with outtake and bonus tracks, but I let this one play accidentally and it turns out I liked all the bonus stuff more than the content of the original album. Maybe I should give their older stuff a listen. As for this album, it's solidly fine, bordering on good. It wasn't unique sounding enough to really grab me but I liked it anyway. I think if they added the rest of the band outside of the guitar on "Answering Machine" that would've been the best song, but obviously it would sound completely different.
Mjög fín plata en vantar svolítið hittara
This was a good one! I enjoyed it!
опять тюнфайнд не помог и чуть не свёл меня с ума) но это не мой жанр (пения чуть мимо нот потому что от души)
gostei um algumas mas maioria tava ok
Gutsy title
6.5/10
80’s pop rock, a few stand out songs for sure and makes me want to dance out with a air guitar.
I liked the energy but it didn’t feel special. 2.5/5
Pretty high energy, not bad.
This felt a bit music by numbers. It was fine, but the best song was a T-Rex cover that wasn't a patch on the original.
Pleasantly surprised by this album, although it's not particularly remarkable music. I appreciate what it was angling for even if it's nowhere near the best post-punk of its age. Fav tracks: Seen Your Videos
I liked some aspects of their no frills sound. At times I thought I was in an actual garage.
The Replacements are a band that should be up my alley, yet they never fully land with me. Maybe it’ll happen over time, but I’m not there yet. This being said, still an enjoyable listen.
Scrappy, and and interesting mix of sloppy and locked in…”Unsatisfied” is a banger
3 Stars (8/15)
Cool
The songs I loved, I really loved. And the songs I hated made my ears bleed. I think this might be too heavy rock for me. "I Will Dare" and "Androgynous" are my favorites.
This album kinda flew by and I already don't remember any of it. It sounded good but wasn't memorable for me. Standouts are "I Will Dare" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" It's got a cool sound and I'd like to probably come back to The Replacements at some point in time, but for now it's an average 3/5 for me.
Kind of felt like a lot of other punk albums
I Will Dare to say that you should let this one go to the Answering Machine.
it got better as it progressed, some nice punky sounds and interesting lyrics
Great music for shoveling snow to. I'm living in a virtual time loop of shoveling the same area every 2 hours. This provided good energy for such a task. Sounds like this influenced stuff I was listening to in the late 1990s early 2000s. Not bad. Androgynous stands out. Is the answering machine at the end of the album saying "If you need snow?" over and over again?! What is happening!?
Decent 3,5
There's a loveable earnestness to this album that is impossible to shake.
This one is borderline for me on an all-time list. From a historical standpoint, I suppose it warrants entry. The bands' straddling of punk and a more melodic rock sensibility was a herald of alternative rock's emergence. Songs can be loud and defiant without disembling into a jangled cacophony of noise. The better songs on this album are the ones that showcase Westerberg's more honest and heartfelt songwriting, along with the more melodic sensibility from the rock side of their formative influences. This might be said to be the comments of someone who simply doesn't like punk music, but that's not the case. Bands like NOFX or Social Distortion that are often mentioned alongside The Replacements are better, as far as I'm concerned. Naturally, these things are a matter of preference. I just don't think the punk side of their persona is anything but flippant and brash. In short, those aren't their great songs. I can't rate this album highly as a whole, even if I am happy to listen to it.
Gary’s got a boner lol.
I always want to like the Replacements, but it never comes together for me. Some of the songs in here are great. Others are just noisy.
Sorry, Joe!
A Forest the standout track. Worth 3.5 stars really.
I was scared when I discovered that this album contains punk as I’m not the biggest fan of it BUT I was pleasantly surprised when solid rock and chiller songs strated playing.
nothing special but quite enjoyable
Obviously not the Let It Be everyone is familiar with but it’s a cool album
This album is highly regarded, but too early for me to be cognizant of it. Still, I can appreciate its influence, and think it's very solid. High 3s.
Mixture of punk, ballads, and other rock. I'll come back and listen to this full deluxe version.
very of its time. Nice base lines. Nothing super memorable.
Good, but, like any A&R man, I kept looking for a single.
First "older" Replacements album I've listened to and I like it. I need to return to it to get more out of it. Love the mix of punk and indie (for lack of a better word). I might change my rating after listening more. I like it!
3/5
I feel like one of the trickiest things a band with a punk sound can do is "mature." Often that means sanding off the sonic and emotional rawness, leaving songs that feel sort of light and middle of the road. Though I'm not familiar with their previous two albums, I feel like that might be what is happening here, based on the Wiki. Still enough good stuff here to keep it from drifting into 2 star range, but I doubt I'll remember much about it after posting this review
seminal bad, lots of tunes did not know they did. They are listed as punk, but I consider more like post-New Wave Pop
A post-punk album with coming-of-age themes. Nothing special to my ears. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
