Reviews (page 2 of 8)
This is #day636 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… I got into The Replacements relatively late, only about ten years ago, but that didn't stop me from appreciating their place in the American '80s alternative/indie rock scene, alongside R.E.M., Pixies, Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü, and others. Let It Be is a great record, dripping with a kind of weary youthfulness. It's got punk, melody, rage, boredom, and all that jazz. "I Will Dare" is my favorite cut. And, of course, you can't help but mention "Androgynous." This is a 5 out of 5. Looking forward to #day637.
Another great find from the list. Catchy songs with a lot of variety. Favorite track: i will dare other picks: androgynous, unsatisfied, answering machine, we're coming out
I'm blown away here. This album is from 1984, today I learned Nirvana, Green Day, Hold Steady and Gaslight Anthem all grew up listening to them and influenced by them. The album that shaped the albums of my youth. It's a cracking album, amazed I've never heard it before. Progressive, punky, alternative and poached with anthems. It's the blueprint for the sound of my youth, bonus points all round.
Top five of all time for me.
so evocative and brimming with ideas
Masterpiece. Incredible album every song is good and it is so quick. Unsatisfied is one of the best alternative rock songs ever
So classic. So so classic. Unsatisfied, androgynous, answering machine are all like aspirational songwriting so so good. Friko’s greatest inspiration and it shows…
Best enjoyed while bumming cigs and drinking a case of beer in a parking lot somewhere. A key text in garage rock, indie rock, college rock, etc. Where would we be without the 'Mats? Maybe some other kids in a garage in Minnesota would have sprung up in their place. But that's not the world we're in. I'm alright with that.
yeah, still great. it's hard for me to choose a favorite replacements. they all have their unique charms and greateness. "we're comin' out" remains one of my favorite punk songs ever. and "black diamond" is a favorite punk/metal tune. and and then, "unsatisfied" gives us a broken and brilliant ballad. just so much goodness on this album. the beauty of "sixteen blue" into the noisey chaos of "answering machine" show my favorite aspects of the 'mats, their utter disregard for genre and how to put together a cohesive album. their commitment to that anarchic spirit works to their advantage
A stone cold classic, but they're still a band I wanted so much more from. Always feels like there should have been one more album from them between Hootenanny and Let it Be.
This is a time 1001 albums chose an album that I love to bits. It's melodic, slightly chaotic, but above all a fun album. I could write a tonne about this one, instead I'll say 5* and continue getting ready for work :)
Never heard of them. No preconceptions. But I was quite impressed. They did an amazing job of capturing that weird transitional moment of life when you’re Not-yet-a-man, but also No-longer-a-child. Juvenile songs like Gary’s Got A Boner live alongside heartfelt tunes and really capture that moment of becoming. Great work.
The Replacements is altijd één van mijn favoriete post-punk artiesten geweest, niet-zijnde goth of new wave. En met Let It Be hebben we denk ik mijn favoriete album te pakken. Dus ja, 5 sterren en hoog op de lijst voor de platenbeurs! 9/10 Highlights Androgynous Unsatisfied
Possibly the greatest record, by the greatest band of all time. The importance of The Replacements, and Paul Westerberg, in my life can’t be overstated. Ten stars.
Stupendous!!!
So happy when this appeared. Songs that should have made them superstars but they couldn't handle it so instead we got the Goo Goo Dolls.
Yes! It's funny that yesterday we got the Monkees slavishly mimicking the Beatles and today we have the Replacements flipping them off. This isn't my favorite 'Mats album, but it is the first one I (and everyone else outside Minnesota) ever heard, and it encompasses both the sloppy and the sensitive. Androgynous is a wonder. I could go on and on, but for me, the Replacements are the greatest band of the 80s. They shook off the sanctimony of the 60s, perfected the art of not giving a shit, and made punk rock fun. Unfortunately they also broke our hearts in every possible way, but at this point we didn't know that yet. You could also listen to Replacements Stink and Pleased to Meet Me for the full experience.
what can you say
so authentic that it evokes feelings for an era I never lived. perfect punk sound. so damn inspiring
What will it take for me to give a 5 star review to an album I've never heard of by a band I've never heard of? This, I guess. What a revelation. The punky silliness of songs like Tommy... and Gary... just puts the more earnest tracks in relief. There's nothing lyrically deep about Unsatisfied, but it doesn't matter because I believe it. Top notch.
As sure as day turns to night, young punks turn into old punks, and Paul Westerberg was just starting to turn from one to another on Let It Be. There's plenty of immaturity here; from the songs about boners and evil dentists, to the KISS cover, to the sheer audacity of borrowing a Beatles album title. Still, all of that becomes a welcome contrast to the more thoughtful songs with heavier themes about growing up, gender expression, and loneliness. The Replacements were a volatile band and Let It Be can seem like a mess at first listen; but the polish of their later records blunts their impact. The roughness and variety gives Let It Be a charm that Tim can't quite match. It's a perfect time capsule of being twenty something in the mid 80s and having ideas some might call "alternative". Despite spending years running away from the label, Paul Westerberg, at this moment, was truly the voice of a generation.
The better of the Let It Be records. Subversive, ironic, funny - the Replacements at their best.
Classic, zero complaints
Very good album. It takes some balls to name your rock album Let It Be, and it takes some real talent to live up to it. A solid blend of humor with heart. Managing to put the fears and anxieties of adolescence into the right words and making it sound good. Androgynous, Unsatisfied, Sixteen Blue and Answering Machine are all great tracks. Maybe I give out too many 5's, but I'm feeling this one today.
no brainer
This is an album that I have every second memorized. They are my all time favorite band and while this is most fans’ favorite album, this lands at like 2 or 3 for me. That being said, it’s absolutely perfect.
Perfect. No notes.
Absolutely incredible. Minnesota continues to dominate the music scene. Fuck yeah. "Androgynous" is about 50 years ahead of its time, and the rest of these songs got this punkish edge to the alternative rock that makes for incredible catchy songs. I need to listen to these guys more
Super sexy album! Brings you in such deep memories. Maybe it is just my reflections, but I like it!
It's just bloody good. 5 stars for Androgynous and Answering Machine alone. This one through to Pleased to Meet Me, what an insane run. Paul and the boys made it all good to be an emotional boy whilst simultaneously being a drunken numbnuts. Thanks mates.
i like. a few new songs added
Divertido e leve. Melodias pop-rock com raízes punk enterradinhas. Difícil ficar parado, ritmos marcantes e energizantes. 5/5
Nearly flawless open hearted punk rock.
I played this 2-3x/day virtually all of 1L year. Easy 5. Might have to listen 2 or 3 times today, too. Update: 2.5. I once read a review that panned “seen your video” because the reviewer thought it was a childish, immature swipe at other bands. Dude. The next song is called “Gary’s got a boner.” The childishness is the point. The immaturity exists alongside the more “mature” songs androgynous, unsatisfied, sixteen blue, and answering machine, but the songs here are usually yes-and, not either-or. This album has a song about getting your tonsils removed that’s also a class critique. It has a serious song about 16 being the hardest age. An answering machine is an antagonist … and I totally buy it. That tonsils/class solidarity song is three songs away from one of my favorite love songs of all time (I will dare) and two songs away from a Kiss cover. The album encompasses the whole of the adolescent/coming of age experience, equal parts idiocy and maturity. Everything about this album is perfect, and everything about it is imperfect, at once. An all-time favorite, possibly one of my five favorite albums. And also, a lot of sellout videos in 1984 sucked.
Love each other soooo androgynous😝
4.5 I dont feel the need to explain myself on this
All time classic. Just worth it for the song Unsatisfied. Love the fact they named the album Let it Be as a joke.
The songs. That's really the biggest leap forward here. Sure the arrangements are a little more thought out. The emotions really push through whether it be love, or anger or despondence. You feel everything they are feeling. It's like a roadmap for youthful (or human) emotions. Starting with a confident declaration where anything seems possible if you lay it on the line and ending with...an answering machine...where no human response is forthcoming. Just an endless loop that slowly fades. Along the way you get the full gamut. I am confident 8 of these songs ended up on mix tapes over the years. My "favorite" is ever changing. And even the throw aways feel integral to the album. The greatness is only bolstered by this new mix. This album sounded thin back in the day. It's a revelation to hear these songs sounding fuller. Like you itting in their midst - feeling what they're feeling. I am along for the ride. There may come a day where I am no longer transported back to visit with teenage me when I hear the solo and fade out of Sixteen Blue - a song i first heard as a confused high school sophomore standing in my parents kitchen. But today is not that day.
Game changer. "I Will Dare" played at almost every party I went to freshman year at Iowa.
“One more chance to get it all wrong.” “Look me in the eye and tell me that I’m satisfied.” “Try and teach a whore about romance.” There’s a real sad-sack country outlaw streak running through Paul Westerberg’s lyrics that belied his youth. Let It Be is an incredible document that captures the uncertainties of life between adolescence and adulthood, stuck between fucking off with your friends and having to get a job. “Sixteen Blue” and “Androgynous” are stunningly honest and vulnerable assessments of the confusion of youth and sexual discovery. The amazing thing is that even their most juvenile impulses — “Gary’s Got a Boner,” say, or turning a KISS song into a punk-rock scorcher — do nothing to detract from the heft of the rest of the material. It signaled a major force on the American indie scene, even if the band would self-destruct soon enough. One of my favorite albums from one of my favorite years for music.
Take the more pop side of The Clash and mix it with black flag and throw in the absolute classic of androgynous…easy 5
the first time i heard these guys i stayed up all night listening to "let it be," "tim," and "pleased to meet me" over and over and over. one of those "where has this been my whole life?" discoveries.
One of my holy grail records. I have had this in my collection for almost 40 years (just under). Over time the songs get better and better and I realize how great of a songwriter Paul Westerberg was on that record (a fool as well). The innocence but the bravado of the band shows well in this recording. They we just starting to get going yet they faltered in the end. The story was just starting of what could have been.
awesome
Super Dope
5 out of 5. Let it Be is a great album from a great band.
Wonderful bridge between punk, alternative, indie and post-punk. Had heard some of it before, but not listened to the album in one sitting before this.
Honestly one of my favorite bands and albums, and very happy to see it's inclusion on this list! Best described as "your favorite band's favorite band", The Replacements released some of the greatest rock music of their generation. Westerberg is a legendary songwriter who went on to have a consistently inspired solo career after The Replacements finally called it quits. Regardless if you like this album or not, I highly recommend you check out the book Trouble Boys, which gives you a great look behind the curtain of one of the most self destructive bands ever.
Absolutely The Replacements apex. Perfect all the way down.
Yes.
I don't know who these guys think they are, but this shit slaps with zero warning. They're funny and loud, and then they drop a sincere piano track; it’s fucking brilliant. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions I Will Dare Favorite Thing Androgynous Unsatisfied Answering Machine
Gonna get it out of the way that this was always gonna be a 5 if I saw it on this list. One of my favorites and has been in rotation for something like 20 years. It's not a perfect album. But if it were, it wouldn't be a Replacements album. I recently read something (like yesterday) that an artist's flaws are perhaps more important than their strengths because it's what gives them personality. Of course, you gotta be good in the first place, but to be human is what makes you interesting. You might think it was written about the 'Mats, but it name dropped Matisse, so you'd be wrong, but it really fits, doesn't it? Who but the Replacements would slot a cheesy Kiss cover between stone-cold all-timers like Androgynous and Unsatisfied? And who else could make it work? Why are there songs about boners, and why do you find yourself absent mindedly humming a song about boners in front of your kids (honorable mention to Diarrhea Planet's Ghost With a Boner, I guess)? Actually, every song on this album has been hummed absentmindedly in front of my kids. The highs are high, the lows gleefully roll in the mud, and they all play nice together. A triumph of post-pubescent demand to be in the world.
The superior Let It Be
One of my favourite bands. Probably their best album, perfect combination of their punk roots and more melodic side
I often find myself between this and Tim as my favourite Replacements album. While the next album may have been where they perfected the rock-pop to complement Westerberg's voice, this one has its messy self-destructive charm. Androgynous is a special special song.
any album that contains both seen your video AND i will dare is a 5. that the rest of let it be is just as wonderful is why its one of the best albums ever made. perfection.
Shaggy shambolic rock and roll inspired by the anyone can do it / do it yourself ethos of hardcore and driven by a relentless all consuming drunken youthful urge to create, express, and react. Wedged between punk and power pop and alt country, it barley holds together yet coheres into something magical, the guitars' scuzzy jangle, the deeply emotive hoarse vocals, the punchy drums and loping bass together create an alienated but earnest, melancholic and wistful, ironic but open sensibility. It's so basic and raw, naively touching. I was late to this band, but they've become a favorite.
Oh, to be young, smart, depressed, and lazy
Going into this, I had never heard of The Replacements or their album Let It Be. I was, however, excited for a punk album today, so I gave it a listen. I’ll get the obvious joke out of the way first: I think I might actually prefer this Let It Be to The Beatles’! This record was a lot better than I expected. I gave it 2–3 listens today, and it’s already downloaded to revisit again and again. It’s much more than just loud, rowdy punk—there’s real maturity here. The band blends punk energy with thoughtful lyrics and strong melodies, almost leaning toward power-pop at times. It feels like a group evolving beyond their raw beginnings into something richer and more meaningful. I’ll definitely be checking out their earlier albums to see how they got to this point. Favourite track: I Will Dare and Favourite Thing are standouts. Least favourite track: Honestly, every song is worth a listen, but by the time it reached Answering Machine it felt like the album had run out of steam just a little. Album artwork: Simple yet effective.
Wow, right after Automatic for the People I get another album I have listened to for a hundred plus hours. One of the most genuinely tough records ever made. With one of the softest, sweetest songs "Androgynous" which may have influenced me more than any other lyric put to tape. This is a perfect album, one of the greatest of the 80s and still not even the Pats best. That title would go to Tim, specifically the Ed Stasium mix* that came out recently. Then 3 or 4 other albums tie for 3rd. *Hadta jump right over to this after finishing Let It Bleed.
How young are you / How old am I? I'm about to rate The Replacements' Let It Be five stars. How smart are you / How dumb am I? It's not my favorite of their records, but it's the one I bought first and I still have such an irrational fondness for it. As they matured and their songcraft was allowed to breathe, it was no longer almost completely dwarfed by volume, speed, and brashness like Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash. So you get a lot of Tim and after albums hailed as the greatest. But what I like about Let It Be is that it retains elements of their attitude and early sound while pointing towards the evolution yet to come. Some might say it's a transitional album, but look me in the eye and try to talk me out of this album's brilliance and we'll have to throw down nonetheless. Oh, meet me anyplace or anywhere or anytime.
The best album named Let It Be.
5/5
i love this album a lot. it's maybe not my favorite replacements album, but it's close. it was the first one i ever listened to, and so for that it has perhaps some added esteem in my view. but this album has it all, a snarling attitude, witty lyrics, and great songwriting. paul westerberg is vastly underrated in the music scene and on here are some of my favorite songs of his. of course, the classic 'i will dare' is great, but my favorite on here are the very ahead of its time 'androgynous' and the longing 'unsatisfied' which may sneakily be one of my favorite songs of all time. yeah there's some less serious stuff here ('tommy gets his tonsils out' and 'gary's got a boner') and their cover of kiss' 'black diamond' leaves a little to be desired, but i think all of that adds to the charm.
It bled
I only knew two Replacements songs before, 'Androgynous' and 'Swinging Party', so I didn't really appreciate their sound was mostly more punky/garage rock. This is great, love the energy and and guitar riffs. A couple of slower ones provide some nice pacing and the lyrics deal with some concepts that are still relevant today (such as gender identity and... boners) A previously unheard 5* for me
80s post-punk. Ramones/Clash with some pop sensibilities. Can almost hear pop-punk coming through. Also like Black Flag in places. Androgynous is a nice little LBQT+ piano ballad. Ooh, also got some rock/glam sounds on Black Diamond. Sixteen Blue is almost like Springsteen. This band is very versatile and executes all this perfectly! Best track - We're Coming Out (very punky), Androgynous, Black Diamond Post-note - Black Diamond is a cover of Kiss, so I'll disregard it for best track even though it is very good Gotta be a 4 star album, maybe even 5 stars, yeah call it 5
Very cool. Probably the first album on this list that I LOVED that I've not heard before (333).
One of the great rock groups of the 80’s. I've never bothered listening to a full album experience truthfully even living in Minnesota most of my life. Really good. Almost five starts in a way but I just have to sit with it more.
Top 101 for me. I Will Dare, Androgynous and Sixteen Blue are some of the best songs and songwriting. Period.
This is why I am doing this program, to find music like this. I had never heard of them before but I absolutely adore this album Best Song: Unsatisfied Rating: 9/10 (Incredible) Stars: 5/5
Indy rock before it was called indy rock. Love it.
This one and Tim are my most played of their catalog although any one are great rock n roll staples.
Nonstop grind. Cool but static.
Excellent. Full of bangers.
A stomping classic!!!!
First time hearing a really good album.
no cynical bone in this albums body. clears the beatles version tenfold
Always 5 stars for The Replacements. Fun and earnest. Bless their hearts!
This album? Five stars, easily. Let It Be is an absolute legendary, must-have album from the 80s. Seriously, if you don't have this one, you're missing out. It sounds fantastic on vinyl. So, do yourself a favor: grab the wax, put it on the turntable, sit back, close your eyes, and just let it take you back. This record is pure awesome, a real classic that takes you right back to the days of of chilling with friends. Not thinking about what it would be like 41 years later.
top songs: i will dare, seen your video, temptation eyes, answering machine, black diamond, unsatisfied, androgynous
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. It's a perftect 10 album IMO. Happy to see it here.
Ah, one of the greatest “should have been bigger than they were” bands of all time. The Replacements were tremendous. Let It Be, in my opinion the album when they first became a great band, is a clinic in what rock music can be at its best. Messy, emotional, creative, raw. It’s a vibe fueled by (too much) alcohol and a longing for finding that something in the void. I’ve been a fan of this band for several years even thought they broke up when I was a kid, long before I knew about them. While I personally think Pleased To Meet Me is their Magnum Opus, Let It Be is the perfect blend of where they were headed and the raw energy of their earlier work. I Will Dare is a fantastic opener. Androgynous is a weird little song that gives spotlight to a human sub culture that was especially taboo at the time. Unsatisfied is Westerberg (one of rock’s best frontman and songwriters) as his very best. This listen highlighted the song Seen Your Video for me. What a fantastic and unconventional song that one is. It sounds like it would have fit in well on Nevermind. It ends with what is in my opinion one of the all time great album closers: Answering Machine. It’s as emotionally and sonically raw songs as you’ll hear from the 80’s. The Mats were ahead of their time, and Let It Be would have probably been a bigger hit if it came out ten years later. Listen to this album, Tim, and Pleased To Meet Me back to back for one of the best three album runs in music history.
I liked this a lot. It feels fresh despite being 40 years old
I think part of the reason this album has such enduring appeal, beyond it's tightrope walk of angst, agita, and humor, is that it represents a moment we've all had - but not all capitalized on - in life. A moment where a talented but habitually slacker-ish band finally put it all together and made something truly masterful. And not as a fluke; the albums that follow this are every bit as masterful in ways that, say Hootenanny did note foretell. We've all been that person, not living up to our potential, shooting ourselves in the foot, tripping ourselves up at critical junctures in our lives. But in Let It Be, there's the moment we all aspire to, where we absolutely fuckin' nail it.
How can you not give a five to a band of poets, nay, artistes, who balanced the poetry and beauty of trying to capture everything from nonbinary identity to adolescent heartbreak in 33 rambunctious yet beautiful minutes alongside a song about getting a hard-on?
I felt some teenager vibes It sounds fun and cool, kinda liked it... and by the end, I realized I loved it. This 5/5.
When I find myself in times of trouble ... I crank The Replacements.
One of the ‘Mats best albums and one of the best albums of the Eighties, period. Playing it takes me right back to high school and maxing out the tape in my Beetle. Raw as hell and fucking funny. And “Androgynous” follows “Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out”. What band can put two together like that?
"I Will Dare" and "Androgynous" are two of the best pop songs written by any band, ever. Extra points for covering Kiss "Black Diamond".
Great album— unsatisfied is a top tier track and the others are great too (seen your video anyone?). Incredible garage rock that shaped the mould of tons of imitations I listened to in college. This is the original and its impact is lessened not one bit by its cultural impact and created cliches
this album is so goated
It's noisy and messy and raucous with a sense of controlled chaos, and I am here for every freaking minute of it!
Classic.
Really struck a chord with me. Super raw at some points and introspective. Really liked this one.
I overlooked this at first listen, but it's actually so perfect. I'm glad I gave it a second shot. Definitely wouldn't have appreciated it as a teenager, I don't think. Too understated. It reminds me a lot of R.E.M. and a bit of Hüsker Dü at times? Why is this so fucking good?
Not sure if it my state of mind, but this album kicks butt
Huge album that filled America post punk and Indy scene of the 80’s (thank god!)
Gary's not the only one with a boner around here. This album rocked. It checked all of the boxes of what a great album needs. The album flows really well with a great variety of tones, volumes, and genres. The lyrics and topics across the album are a perfect blend of being hilarious and serious. Listened to this album three times and had the same amount of enjoyment. The only downside to this album is that I think it started off too slow with the first two songs. They didn't hit as hard as the remainder of the album. Great songs: Black Diamond, Unsatisfied, Sixteen Blue, Gary's Got a Boner, We're Coming Out, Answering Machine (honestly can list almost all of them) This album was clearly pushing boundaries at the time, and I'm sure angered a lot of boomers, making it even more entertaining. Soft 5/5
Is this a 5/5? It might be, the songs are great, earnest, and the album sequencing is near-perfect. I will dare is such a great opener, followed by favorite things is so good. I love Androgynous too. This album picks up right where The Clash left off for me. I love this record
Five songs into this album, and the record goes from not giving a shit to very much giving one; from the bravado of 'Yeah I hear, I think, I know / Rock don't give a shit, you know' ('Favorite Thing') to the reserved optimism of 'One more night to get it half right' ('We're Comin' Out') to the ahead-of-its-time negotiation of the gender spectrum of 'Mirror image, see no damage' ('Androgynous'). There's authentic wisdom here: 'Your age is the hardest age / Everything drags and drags.' I love the sense that Paul is having a heart-to-heart w/ a young kid going thru it. This one's over in a blink, and by the end, I'm more than satisfied. If it's not quite sublime, it's still perfect, it's still exactly what I'd want out of a record. Bravo to that.
Been waiting on this one. Absolutely lived up to the hype and I am sad to have only just listened to it in its entirety. 16 year old me is kicking my 40 something year old ass for waiting so long...
I Will Dare ❤️
Love it! ‘Twas my first taste of the replacements back in the mid 80’s, and I’ve owned everything since. Jumping back to their earlier punk days found a different vibe, but equally as good. I can get their early fan base resented the transition to a more contemporary sound. Perhaps I was lucky to catch them in the middle. One thing seems certain; Westerberg was no sell out. His distain for MTV was apparent on their Bastards of Young vid, and getting banned from SNL cemented his status as an anti-establishment rock curmudgeon. People also complained about their live shows, as they often played hammered. I rather enjoyed them in their raw, playful behavior. Caught their show a handful of times in Seattle, where sets often ended in a noisy haze of smoke and humor. One night, they came on stage without eyebrows, courtesy of some shaving silliness with their opening act and drinking buddies, the Young Fresh Fellows. Fun night. Back to the album…. 5 stars! Unsatisfied gives me chills. God Bless the Replacements.
This album rules and I am mad I hadn't heard it till last year. I love the mix of like indie, punk, older rock, etc. It's just very good. 4.5/5
One of the best college rock albums ever, although Tim is even better. A-
Heard a lot about the replacements and let it be, another hugely influential post-punk album I've never listened to. Sounds to me like this has a lot more melody than the other similar bands at the time and its right up my street, think Weezer, Ash and a million other bands I like would have listened to them. I love when a band has proper ropey punk production but plays music like this. It didn't click as perfect on the first listen, a couple of songs didn't land but definitely listening again. 4.5.
Never heard of the replacements and really liked this. Kinda rough, messy, soft punk, rock thing going on. Carelessness of youth. We're coming out Androgynous Sixteen blue Strong 4, I'll be back
Should buy
Love this, and Tim possibly even more so. Androgynous is wonderful. So much similarity with Cobain in the voice.
This one started out as a 2 or so for me, but after a couple of relistens, notched its way up. By that point found very few duds in the bunch and the whole album holds together so well. Definitely raw, but you can hear the building blocks of where they, and the other bands they influenced, are going. Looking forward to more of the catalog.
I mean come on !
Favorite Tracks: I Will Dare Black Diamond Androgynous
Punk with song structure Oddly catchy anti-pop Not unsatisfied
Happy 4th of July to one of the finest albums of the 1980s and the Mats at their sloppy, immature, drunken, heartfelt, coming-of-age best. Look me in the eye then tell me that I’m satisfied.

I really dig this LP, solid music choice.
Pretty much everything you want a garage rock album to sound like. Ragged, passionate, pregnant with youthful angst - and choc-ful of melody. To these ears 'Androgynous', whilst a welcome change of pace, is the weakest cut here. It's got the most individual plays on Spotify. Curious!
i really loved this album. i knew androgynous and the original of 20th century boy going into this but nothing else on this album. alex chilton and kids don't follow are classic tracks i love from other replacements albums, so i figured i'd like these too. favorites: only gary's got a boner and the outtakes failed to impress. what a great record.
Classic. Such a change from Hootenanny. Full of great melodies, teenage angst, and different styles. Loved every somg.
Well this is easy, The Replacements have been one of my most listened to bands over the last couple years, this album especially. They're so versatile, from punk ragers, to sweet piano ballads, to indie rock bangers, they can do anything. Could name every song as a favourite, but i'll just mention that 'Androdgynous' is beautiful, 'Answering Machine' is a gut-punching way to end the album, and 'Unsatisfied' is one of the most passionate rock songs i've ever heard, in the vocals specifically. Absolute alt/indie classic.
what? this album is too good to be on this list??? im ill :((
I was already being actively sold on this album as soon as I put it on, annoyed that I had somehow avoided it in my youth despite it being an obvious and known influence on the Midwest emo and 2000s pop-punk bands I loved at 17. Then "Androgynous" came on, and my nonbinary transfemme ass just started sobbing. Shout out to these drunk punks for being allies in 1984 😭💛🤍💜🖤😭 And shout out to them for being the first hardcore band to break the mold in a way that's actually cool while still making a killer hardcore record!! I'd ask "where has this been all my life," but I'm just ecstatic it's in my life now. Brand new favorite album, will be playing it into the ground for years to come.
Absolutely love this album. A little punky in the best ways and just filled with earworms. I'll never tire of this album or The 'Mats in general. I don't think Tim made the list but it should have as well.
Quite the surprise. Had to define because it seems to switch genres repeatedly, but solid songs all the way through. Truly an unexpected gem.
I’ve listened to this album before and enjoyed it, but listening to it in this time in this context, it really hit me like a sack of bricks. In a good way. The Replacements really had all the ingredients, didn’t they? Too bad.
awwsome!! always loved them!!
This is one of the groups that I figured was missing from my listening experience that this project would expose me to, and here we are. I’m still not sure I have a solid handle on post-punk, but when I saw these guys described as such I wasn’t so sure I would like this album. Well it lives up to the hype for me, because I loved it! The titles of a couple of songs gave me pause… “Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out”, “Gary’s Got a Boner”… they were great! And they do a nice cover of Kiss’ Black Diamond. These guys are talented and a lot of fun. I especially loved the harder turn it took about halfway through. Terrific!
Ooh I’m excited for this one. I know a few songs by the replacements, including favorite thing, so I know I like them. I hope this albums lives up. I will dare is really good. Very catchy chorus. I’ll probably be playing that chorus in my head for a few days. Favorite thing is really good. I already knew this song, and I already knew I like it a lot. We’re coming out is also really good. It’s kinda cool how the whole attitude of the song changes partway for a second. Tommy gets his tonsil out is also great. The rip rip part is really fun. Androgynous is really cool. The choice to use piano instead the loud guitars used so far was a good choice for the song topic. Also, that “love each other so, androgynous” is gonna be stuck in my head for a looong time. Black diamond has really good guitar riffs. Great song. Unsastisfied is also amazing. So far there hasn’t been a bad song on this album, which is crazy. The vocals on this song are great. The instrumental at the beginning of seen your video was so good I assumed the whole song would be instrumental. I usually don’t love instrumental songs, but that instrumental part was REALLY good. And the vocals at the end are super good as well, which is unsurprising at this point. Gary’s got a boner has awesome guitars. The solos after the choruses are so incredibly good. Sixteen blue has great lyrics. Captures the confusions of being a teenager very well. Answering machine is also great. It’s really sad but in a weird way, which is exactly the kind of sad I like in music. 20th century boy is the first song which wasn’t included in the original albums. It’s good. Not much to say. One of the weaker songs. Perfectly lethal is great. After the previous song, I was worried the rest of the album would be disappoint, but this song is on par with the main album. Temptation eyes has a really good chorus. Not as good as that one line in androgynous, but close. Answering machine - solo home demo is interesting. Answering machine was probably one of my favorites, and the crappy microphone used in this version helps set the mood the album was going for. However, it’s one person. Meaning there are no drums. I’m not crazy about drums, but nobody can deny they are very important. However, the song is still really good, and I like the bad microphone, so it’s still amazing. Maybe a little bit worse than the original. Heartbeat is a lovebeat has such a catchy chorus. This one will be stuck in my head along side many others from this album. This version of sixteen blue is pretty much the same level of quality in my opinion. Which is good. Overall: wow, another album I really like. I was excited for this album and it exceeded my expectations. It’s so so so good.

Maybe the most consistent Replacements album I've heard so far. Excellent in its rawness and emotion, blending nicely into more experimental territory. It's also fun but not overly goofy and still serious enough to leave a lasting impression. The inclusion of the KISS cover is interesting but it works and makes sense. I would call this another landmark album for 90s emotional hardcore.
I think this album and Tim are the among the very purest rock and roll ever made. No pretense lyrically, musically, or sonically. Just urgent honesty.
Immediate impression: Not sure if I like this? But then I started to hear it roaming out of punk, into garage alternative rock, into metal. I can hear Nirvana? Then a touching love song that questions gender. Then puerile adolescent rock. All laced with punk ethos that feels slapped together. It just finished and I need to go put it on again. This will be my first 5 given to a formerly unknown album. I will absolutely be listening to this for years to come.
Prophetic. Rowdy. Sloppy. Bubblegum. Life.
Discovered this in high school at some point, I love this one. Bangers from start to finish, one of my favorite post-punk/indie rock albums. I need to put it on more tbh, I had it on repeat a lot at one point but it's been a WHILE. Anyway, easy 5 for me.
Start to finish, Let It Be is my favourite Replacements album! The songs are strong and Paul Westerberg's growing confidence as a well-rounded songwriter is on full display. Though this album had no "hits" in the traditional sense, I Will Dare, Favorite Thing and Unsatisfied are some of the best Replacements songs that many people probably haven't heard. Even the lesser songs that probably have been heard from by other artists, Black Diamond, the Kiss cover (the only cover song the Mats put on record) and Androgynous, that was covered by the Crash Test Dummies are solid and the Replacements recorded superior versions. The Replacements was a band that changed how and why I listened to music and I've been a huge fan ever since I first heard their next album, Tim, their major label debut. Let It Be remains an essential record to anyone that hates "phony rock'n'roll" and feels unsatisfied with the music that was forced on us in the 80's. And yes, it's way better than that other Let It Be album!
4.5
Yes! Love this album and love this band. One of the greatest opening tracks of all time. After playing fast and loud for their first two albums, this came in like a cool breeze. Perfect album.
Love this album - a great collection of tracks in a style which is probably one I most find myself gravitating towards. A great range of sounds here, and the back and forth between the light jangly bops, the slower ballads, and the loud garage numbers make for a dynamic listen throughout that doesn't get tired or dull. The somewhat spent yet impassioned vocals are also a charm for me. There's a really effective way of depicting some of the joys and struggles of growing up without dipping into cliche - the whole essence of this album just seems like a considered but snarky reflection at rock and roll as it used to be projected in the decades before them (take either the borrowed Beatles album title or the punky spin on a KISS song). This record seems to be both youthful and quite grown up at the same time. Big fan of this one - an indie classic I'm completely here for. Four and a half. Fave track: Androgynous
An 80s classic. Moments of greatness are balanced out by less intelligent ones: case in point being that ‘Androgynous’ and ‘Gary’s Got a Boner’ are both songs on this album. They also do a good Kiss cover, which is surprising because I hate Kiss.
yesss
Pretty good
I still remember a friend lending this to me in the mid 90s. Such perfection on track after track after track.
A classic. Starts out more fun and punk and then Westerberg starts showing of his songwriting chops. Androgynous was way ahead of its time and Unsatisfied (a top 20 song for me) proves that raw emotion and simple lyrics can do wonders. The back end of this album just does not let up. Seen Your Video and Answering Machine are other highlights.
love it
Skippa alla album för att få lyssna på lite replacements så bra
Loved this album. The songs are varied with different styles but it all flows very well Saved tracks: I Will Dare, We’re Comin’ Out, Androgynous, Black Diamond, Temptation Eyes
Lotta memories associated with this this album and this sound. I was fortunate to have lived a great childhood with some absent parents who in the summer would dump me at the sailing club as race crew for regattas. Those boats were often skippered by older kids, who probably weren't more than 15 or 16 at the time. Greg, nicknamed me 'Tober' because I was quiet. He and Bobby turned me onto girls, shitty beer and music like this album and the Femmes in the late summer evening sun while putting the Thistle's away for the night. The Replacements made even more appearances while I was in high school. Let it Be was viewed as a rebellious slant in my middle-class, conservative suburban Va neighborhood, but more importantly a favorite of my preferred 'ladyfriends' of the days. Wow... those were good days... we didn't know how amazing those times were... and this album gets me right back there. I could get lost in this one ... So good.
listening now hehe
I don't know why but this reminds me of the beatles and I like it
Never really heard of them before, now I'm not sure how! Sound like an Australian clash-influenced proto-nirvana - I was astounded to find they were from the USA. Really enjoyed it, and was nice to see what the rock kids were listening to when the pop and indie kids were in charge of the charts. Definitely going to listen to more of their stuff, and read more about them too. Wonderful 5 🌟
I've loved this album for quite a few years now. It has great variety, is funny, delightfully messy, and is brimming with creativity and talent. It's influence is very obvious when you look at the rest of the 80s and 90s alternative scene - very ahead of its time! "I Will Dare" and "Unsatisfied" are obvious gems, "Androgenous" is fantastic as well and often brings a tear to my eye. I love the cover of "Black Diamond" too, but I don't think I've ever thought to look up the original. Overall a great album, possibly one of my favourites of the 80s.
This is a great album. Punk rock pioneers. I've added the song "Unsatisfied" to my main music playlist. Love this one.
I loved the album, a lot of genres mixed together, it was a total blast, the whole album was a roller-coaster, from punk, thrash to sort of power ballads and more 80's type rock it had everything that I didn't knew I could want in an album I hadn't heard anything from The Replacements before and I think I'm going to go and listen to more of them
I was a Replacements fan from their first release. Let It Be may be their best. The sloppiness of their early work is gone. The over production of later releases isn't present. Just the Mats playing great tunes from start to finish. I Will Dare is a perfect start. There is humor (Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out and Gary's Got a Boner). Some great covers. (Black Diamond). Even Paul Westerberg playing Androgynous on the piano works. It is an understated classic, but a classic, nonetheless.
Tällaista voi syntyä, kun laulajakitaristi kyllästyy autotallibändinsä "hyvään meininkiin" (eikä aina niin hyväänkään) ja keskittyy vaihteeksi biisinteossa koukkuihin. Lopputuloksena on levy, jolla (a) ei ole yhtään huono kappaletta, (b) on monia upeita kappaleita (I Will Dare, We're Coming Out, Androgynous, Unsatisfied, Sixteen Blue...) ja (c) on vain yksi, jolla ei ole selkeää roolia (Gary's Got a Boner). Eikä se niin vaikeaa ole.
Been a long time since I listened to this gem. Punk, pop and rock, come the 90's this sound went mainstream, but when this released it was groundbreaking.
As a big fan of Stink, Sorry Ma, and Hootenanny it took a couple listens to “get” a lot of this record. Later, I remember one time sitting in my car listening to the tape start to finish and when Answering Machine ended just sitting quietly for a bit. This record is just exceptional. Punk adjacents, hard rockers, pathos laden feelies, boozy party kickers,… it’s all here. They were playing with a tight ease and a sense of barely contained chaos. And Answering Machine has one of my favorite guitar riffs on repeat that I have never tired of. Even after almost 40 years.
This is one of my favorite albums.
This is a great album all the way through. Love it.
Love love love love ❤️ will always be one of my favorites.
Funk on funk. All good not a bad song on it. Couple songs stand out even on this album
Great album from a great band - might be the best 80s album in the list (which in an ideal world should contain a couple of more albums of the Replacements)
A classic.
One of my faves.
I liked this a lot. Really cool sound throughout.
This album is embedded in my DNA. Loved it from the moment I first heard I Will Dare, then the CD lived in my car CD player on repeat for months. They had moments of greatness after this, but this album is their finest moment.
Raucous genius. A band at the height of their sound. I love the Replacements
Such a great album. I don’t know if they invented these different genres of punk but to hear metal ballads, hardcore punk, folk punk and a wide variety of styles while still solely still being the replacements is awesome. They were the pioneers of bands who had a style but would change it up and didn’t give a fuck what people think. 5/5 buying this asap.
Seems to get better each time I listen to it.
I bought this album after reading about it in Spin magazine, probably in part because it had the song "Gary's Got a Boner" on it, which sounded intriguing. It's the only Mats album I ever owned because money was tight, but listening to it on Tidal Master after all these years, the nuances stand out. The mandolin on I Will Dare, the solo from Peter Buck, and the obvious allusion to I Will Follow. The hardcore speed of We're Comin' Out and the thrashy solo with the accelerando finger snaps and piano. Androgynous, which is so prescient of the present moment with the classic verse: "Don't get him wrong and don't get him mad He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad And she don't need advice that'll center her She's happy with the way she looks, she's happy with her gender." Black Diamond is their Kiss cover, which is an interesting choice at this point in the 80s. Next up is Unsatisfied which resonates with almost any relationship. Seen Your Video with its disdain of MTV anticipates their video for Bastards of the Young. Gary's Got a Boner is a great piece of punk rock raunch with coining the phrase a "soft-on." Sixteen Blue is a great song about sexual identity and the end of adolescence. Finally, it's a shame that Answering Machine no longer has the same poignancy that it had back in the 80s when answering machines were dominant. How do you top these lyrics? "How do you say I miss you to an answering machine? How do you say good night to an answering machine? How do you say I'm lonely to an answering machine?" Voice mail just doesn't cut it with the eager anticipation of seeing the blinking light on your answering machine and the bittersweet disappointment when there are no calls. In the outtakes from the expanded version, Westerberg shows that he can do wistful and longing but not sexy in the cover of 20th Century Boy. Perfectly Lethal is about the banality of TV pre-cable and drugs
Tardé mucho en fijarme en el. Me costó unas cuantas escuchas entrarle. Pero cuando lo hice, este disco me resultó absolutamente maravilloso. He leído que se suele referenciar como college rock, a mí me parece una antesala perfecta para el camino del rock alternativo de los 80-90.
It took some months to appreciate it, but Let It Be is a perfect album. Its songs grew on me after each listen and it is now part of my playlist. The rhythm in I will dare is perfect -I think that Peter B from REM played the solo- other songs like Androgynous, Answer Machine, are also bangers. The Replacements are a special band, indeed. A group of intriguing people with whom you’d like to suffer and laugh with.
A perfect album. Much better than that other album of the same name. 10/10 1. Androgynous 2. Unsatisfied 3. Answering Machine
One of my favorite 80's albums ever. So many great tracks on here. Funny, because I listened to this album again the day before this popped up.
This album defies genre. It opens with new wave, and progresses through tinges of punk, hardcore, and even crosses over into power ballad territory. This album has been immensely influential and it is rightfully seen as one of the greatest albums of the 80s
Very mature album on this band transition to alt rock. Good one for building up energy on your day.
This is great. Will definitely be checking out more of their stuff.
It's an interesting sound, but in my case not very fond of punk.
My heart has been broken by two girls who loved Paul Westerberg. I cannot argue with what my heart wants.
I love an album with a strong identity, and this has the feeling of coming-of-age in spades. Not only in the lyrics; somehow the music seems to carry it too. Excellent energy, emotion, and solid variety too. This one will be sticking in my mind for a long while.
This was surprisingly youthful and raw. Soft, aggressive, pensive, and driven. Good surprise.
Wonderful
One of my favourite albums from the 80s. It's got all the energy of punk but clearly some brilliant melodic songs underneath. They might have been huge in the 90s alternative scene
Verrassend album! Leuke riffs en stevig met momenten
Great album. Listen to it loud
Full disclosure; I bloody love the replacements and how much they influenced so many of my favorite bands today. no many Indie Rock bands (although they'd describe themselves as punk) could get away with a Kiss cover (Black Diamond) in the middle of the album, but it ends up being pure rock thunder! Unsatisfied, Androgynous, Sixteen blue and Answering Machine are cries from the heart that I instantly connected with on first listen and identified the replacements as a band for misfits everywhere. His cracked pained vocals are beyond compare. Even the nod back to early more silly punky stuff like "Gets its tonsils out" and "Garys got a bone" still have an immense amount of heart. Love it. 5/5
Awesome rowdy fun.
How have I not heard this before? Stunning.
Classic
Love this one
Actually liked this one a lot!
loved it
Brillante. Canciones eternas, ritmo perfecto, frases contundencia, el punto justo de gilipollez, ideas brillantes musicalmente, canciones ideológicamente avanzadas. 9.5 o 10. Ahí ahí.
One of my favorite albums
Rock gostoso demaaaaais
Descobriment total. Havia escoltat algun tema seu, el nom sempre ha aparegut com a una de les grans influències dels grups de rock alternatiu de finals dels 80 i principis dels 90, com Pixies o Nirvana. Però mai havia escoltat cap àlbum seu. I deu n'hi do quina sorpresa. M'ha agradat molt aquesta barreja de punk amb rock i balades, la veu trencada del cantant, les progressions de les guitarres. Un disc súper entretingut i ple de bons temes. Em deixa amb ganes d'escoltar més d'ells.
Yesss
A high school Staple for me. Love how you can hear the band beginning to shed their hardcore skin. Love how this band clashes melody into raging guitars. Androgynous was light years ahead of it’s time.
Nothing too flashy, just some good solid punk. Nice sort of bridge between old and new school
Nearly perfect album.
This is a really good album. An underrated band even today and definitely were in their day.
how do you say you're lonely to an answering machine?
Well, it's no Beatles Let It Be. It is a really nice and varied punk album. I'm glad they weren't continued to be pressured into doing all high tempo songs, because "tame" punk usually ends up being really good, and this is no exception. It's sneaky great. No particular song stands out, but it just does a lot of things really well. Even the bonus tracks on the Extended Edition were a really nice add. Usually, I try to stay away from those, but it worked well here. I didn't even notice when we switched to the extended songs. I didn't love the beginning (but maybe that would change on a second listen), and that's probably the only thing keeping this from being a 5-star album for me. Favorite Song(s): Black Diamond, Unsatisfied, Answering Machine
Let It Be was such a fun album. I kinda got the vibe that these guys would be a punk band but part of me thought that it was gonna have new wave elements too (I guess it being from 1984 did that to me) but i'm perfectly okay with them not being there, in fact, i just think they would ruin this album as it just works best as a simple punk rock album. The guitars here are just so good by having that heavy edge yet still remaining incredibly catchy. The vocals have that 80s punk charm that i adore and the lyrics are insane and even kinda progressive in all the best ways. There were some songs that did feel like they were dragging a bit but overall, this was just a really great record. Best Song: We're Coming Out Worst Song: Sixteen Blue
I'm familiar enough with the Replacements to know a couple of songs and that this was a major album in their (and perhaps 'alternative music's') development. But I'd never listened to this album, nor any of the songs from it. And now? Well, I think I get it...a nice mix of styles between more punky tracks and some more mature sounding ones. Yeah, this is an enjoyable album. Not quite a 5, for me, but one I want to come back to, which may be the better endorsement of it.
As the album title suggest, "Let It Be" is The Replacements unrestrained and rocked out.
wait a minute so its not the beatles album, right. and what i can say is this is so hella sick. since its less half baked than the other let it be. 4/5
ok i like
7.3/10
Post-punk, indie rock, alternative rock, college rock.
These guys are really good. Songwriting has energy, depth and emotion. And it's really varied.
Great mix of punk with unreverential lyrics
Gary what are you doing bro Will I listen to again: 70%
Very solid. I think if I'd been a teen in the 80s then this may have been my jam. Sixteen Blue, Androgynous and Unsatisfied were excellent but all good throughout.
I quite enjoyed this. 4/5
322/1001 The Replacements - Let It Be Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ✅ On first listen, I can see myself putting this on my heavy rotation list. Thoroughly enjoyed the mix of post-punk edge with the poppier leanings. Also from one moment it can go from teenage dumb jokes to feeling the weight of the world. Great find.
I'm at band practice right now and I'm super behind on my albums. Gotta make this quick. It's pretty glamorous. It's like David Bowie's approach to a true blue punk album. It's versatile, it's aggressive when it needs to be, and it's got a lot of great songs. I liked it. Good job Beatles.
Messy, bratty, rocking and rolling
The Replacements were who they were. Paul Westerberg is such a great song-crafter that they could have sold out. I'm glad they didn't.
some very weird elements, but some really cool stuff as well
This was fun punk for me; felt the roots and the lyrics show the progression. Unsatisfied was my go-to track.
Rock n roll with a punk edge. There is quite a lot of variety on here, and I liked most of it. The 80s production doesn't do it any favours, with it sounding pretty thin at points, and the classic reverb-soaked drums. Still, a good album in general.
This was a real discovery for me. A bit of a punk edge, but turned to more of a pop sound. Definitely one I will come back to.
i like. 3.53 sterne
The guitar riff at the start hooked me instantly, and by "Androgynous" I was sold. This song in particular is truly beautiful, a lovely sentiment with great lyrics. Really awesome album, happy to have found it. Favourites: I Will Dare Androgynous Unsatisfied
It has kind of been overtaken by time. It sounds a bit generic nowadays but that's because it was really influential. Don't know what to say about it but I like it.
Didn’t know much about this band prior to listening to this album. I enjoyed it and plan to check out more of their stuff. I really enjoyed the first track (on second listen) with Peter Buck on guitar.
I need to dig into these guys more. This is great
Short, energetic and to the point, just like this listener likes it. Very good and rounded album and matched the expectations since The Replacements are one of those unheralded bands you always hear about and yet knew zero songs of. Apparently nobody sounded like this in the 80s (really hard to fathom? as it sounds rather punky generic?), so I'll have to take their word for it.
I really liked this! It has a lot of rocky / punky energy to it. There were a few tracks that didn't land, but that's balanced out by some really great ones. Mostly it's a really good, energetic time. There's some nice grooves and guitar work. I definitely hear influence in some later bands as well. I've never listened to these guys before, so this was a nice discovery.
I really liked the first half! Super punky. Second half was okay but not as good.
This album surprised me. I had never heard of The Replacements, but I really liked their sound. Let It Be doesn't fit neatly into a specific rock subgenre, but it still feels like a cohesive album. Some songs feel very punk, others post-punk and there is even a little classic rock in there. This is an album that I think will continue to grow on me. I enjoyed this listen, and look forward to listening to The Replacements more. Best Songs: I Will Dare, We're Comin' Out, Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, Sixteen Blue Worst Songs: Gary's Got a Boner
4 Nice album, wasn't expecting a love song about a trans couple on an 80s punk album
Bardzo sumaltyczny
not my fav replacements
I had never listened to this, or really heard of it before. I typically don't care for much of the "post-punk" that has been on this list so far, but this album has a lot of bright spots and some great songwriting. The "Black Diamond" cover is awesome, and major props for making "Androgynous" back then. This is definitely one of those hidden gems I would not have found without this project.
Det var fedt. Umildbart 4.
Did not listen intentionally enough to give this a 5, but I probably would give it that once I return. I loved the sounds they explored here, and it definitely sounds very influential to a lot of the bands I love. Favorites: Androgynous, Unsatisfied, Gary's Got a Boner, Sixteen Blue
Despite sharing the name of the Beatles' worst album, "Let It Be" is a great album. It has a lot of what punk should be: fast and wild. I'm surprised that "Let It Be" is categorised as post-punk, which is associated with 80s groups like New Order and (ugh) Scritti Politti. "Let It Be" also shows that The Replacements can do slow ballads like "Androgynous" perfectly. "Seen Your Video" is my favourite from the album. 4 stars for "Let It Be".
love it. dragged me right into the party
I enjoyed this one!
Fun, creative punk/alt rock record.
Hmm, this was an interesting listen. It's like an early bridge between punk and alternative. I guess these guys helped path the way for bands like Goo Goo Dolls, Soul Asylum and even the 90s boom with bands like Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins. There's a lot of depth here that I wasn't expecting. Scrappy punk, emotion and yet well polished. The songwriting is pretty great. Enjoyed this one, particularly the grungey tracks like "Unsatisfied" and "Sixteen Blue" (found them very Goo Goo Dolls), but even the softer tracks like "Androgynous" is well done and highlights their emotional range. Overall, it's an enjoyable album that I will listen again to sometime.
Androgynous is a song very ahead of its time.
I can hear the Ramones, Velvet underground and Nirvana in this. That can't be a bad thing. A great album
Good, but not my favorite Replacements album.
Bad ass album.
Wooow me sorprendió la verdad
Generally liked this! The only song I had heard before was "Androgynous" which was the standout here for me, but I also enjoyed "I Will Dare" and "We're Comin' Out"
Excellent album. I know little about the band but the balance between some of the breakneck punk tracks and the quieter ones is perfect, with the vocals and instrumentation always stripped back and raw. Androgynous is an incredibly forward thinking song for its time, and Answering Machine immediately cuts through as a standout. 8/10
Not what I was expecting, I need to give this more listens for sure
One of the best examples of proto pop-punk.
Its good
It took me a while to get into the replacements. I’m still not a mega fan but this album is terrific. It’s raw and energetic but also contemplative at times. It’s got range.
3/20/26. Really enjoyable collection of songs. Love the variance between punk and loosely incorporated other genres and styles. Unsatisfied might be a sleeper favorite track of mine going forward.
This is a timeless piece of art that sounds nothing like what was coming out of 1984. A great hybrid of independent, punk, and college rock with catchy riffs that stick with you. Unsatisfied remains on my short list of all time songs.
Nice one
Another introduction and what a surprise! A real fun listen! 3,5
I liked it more than I thought i would but didnt love it as much as one would hope.
Solid straight-ahead post-punk and proto-indie, with a surprising ear for melody. Feels very teen angst, though, and so an odd one to come to in my 40s. Still, a great record, and one I'll be coming back to.
I really liked this, actually. Worth another listen
Enjoyed this a lot. A really fun alt-rock record. Surprised I'd never heard any of this before
So refreshing, great discovery!
love it
fun
almost a 5
This is really a fantastic album. I hope people really understand the speed and passion of it
A good album, I liked I Will Dare, Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out and Seen Your Video the most.
I love bands that can do a lot of different things. That includes the gender-progressive “androgynous” and the punk romp “Gary’s got a boner”. A fun album here!
I have listened to a few Replacements songs here and there, including the single "I Will Dare," as it appeared in the ending credits of the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. I figure an album from one of the pioneering acts in alternative rock would be enjoyable, and Let It Be delivered on that expectation for the most part. This record seems to have more grit than a lot of post-punk at the time, with Bob Stinson and Paul Westerberg’s distorted guitars that delivered some impeccable riffs, alongside an equally punchy rhythm section in Tommy Stinson and Chris Mars. Hell, they even pulled off an unexpectedly raw rendition of KISS’s “Black Diamond”. The energy only dialed back for two ballads, but even those tracks have some real gravitas to them, with the lowly piano-driven “Androgynous” and the introspective slow-burn of “Sixteen Blue”. All throughout, Paul sang with a gruff earnestness on these coming-of-age stories that ran the gamut from touching upon disenfranchised youth, taking risks, fears and anxiety with loneliness and growing old, and even references to cross-dressing and sexual confusion. It’s admittedly progressive for the time. The band even used a few tracks to take the piss off, such as lampooning the music video sensation on “Seen Your Video”, to a humorous anecdote based on bassist Tommy’s removal of his tonsils. That said, for as much as I was enjoying this album up to this point, there was one song that was a real blight in my opinion. “Gary’s Got a Boner” soured my mood with its lyrics. While the song in principle fits in with the general adolescent themes of the record as the protagonist is questioning his own sexuality, I admittedly felt put off by the abrasive, grotesque nature of lines like “You're gonna get down, you're gonna finger to her/You're gonna fuck Madonna/You're gonna see her” and “Tell your sister just that opinion/My heartache will find a way/You're gonna stick it to her”. As I was listening to the song, I glanced back over to the track listing and saw that one of the credited writers for this track was Ted Nugent, and it unfortunately makes sense why I would be creeped out given his track record with writing songs about underage girls and sexual violence. “Sixteen Blue” and “Answering Machine” were thankfully better tracks, but by that point my mood was soured. It’s unfortunate that there was one bad track on an otherwise solid record. I do feel like I got of mileage out of listening to The Replacements hard-hitting post-punk that explored and questioned these feelings of what it meant to become an adult. Even if I was a tad let down towards the end, I still had an overall good time with it.
Super catchy, punky album. I enjoyed multiple spins of this one, definitely will be back to it.
4.7
This has exceeded my expectations, I have never heard about this band and i am pleasantly surprised with their sound. The song androgynous is beautiful and it made me interested in the band. The album is filled with good songs.
Often heralded as their best LP, and it is a great one, but not my fave or their best (Tim) IMHO. I do love this record though.
Sounded pretty good to me
Hell yes
I found the Replacements backwards - that is to say, my introduction to their music was through Paul Westerberg’s solo song Dyslexic Heart on the Singles soundtrack in 1992. From there, I went back through his catalog eventually coming across Let It Be. It’s still so hard to believe that this album was released in 1984 - it was ahead of its time both in sound and lyrics/message. One minute a rocking bar anthem with punk sensibilities, and another jangle pop hooks with deep messages. Not one I’ve revisited a lot, but still a favorite. 4⭐️
Only hearing this for the first time - a joy but too slapdash in places to be in the upper echelons
Frekar ljúf plata og góð.
Skítugt og gott rokk.
It’s noisy but not too noisy It’s somewhere near the Sex Pistols and around the Clash. A slowed down MC5 but not too slow as to never have been considered to tour with them. I don’t sense any sort of influence on newer more modern bands though I don’t doubt there is an influence for someone. I will say, I didn’t know they wrote Androgynous. I thought it was the Crash Teat Dummies. Look them up, if you dARE. Completely different sounds. Like 2 separate sides of the spectrum . You know, it’s rare to me that an album gets better the further down the list you go. What was going to be barely a 3 star album has changed to a barely a 4 star album now. This album grew on me. Choice cut: Unsatisfied

Heard the name but no idea what they sound like. Here goes. Enjoyed it, probably would have enjoyed seeing them live too back in the day. Not sure it’s overly original (but maybe it was for the time) as I’ve heard a number of bands that sound very similar over the years. Still, good album.
You have to be confident to name your album Let It Be. The Replacements are one of those "if you know, you know" type bands that just influenced so much stuff after them.
This is a great album. I've always loved the song Unsatisfied and how it perfectly captures a mood you find yourself in while you grow up and are figuring out who you are. This is an album that feels like it carries a lot of meaning if you hear it at the right time.
Uh 3-4?
This was cool. I liked it. Never heard anything by them as far as I know.
Conflicted about this one... wish I could do 3.5. I love the Replacements’ overall sound, how they occupy this particular intersection between punk and indie and jangle pop. I can hear their influence in so many bands I like. But I’m not sure there was a particular moment on this album that wowed me. When it was done I found myself humming their later singles like “Alex Chilton.” At the same time, I keep replaying the album looking for that moment and never stopped enjoying it. So I think I’ll give them the four in the end and play it one more time.
Really nice. It flowed together really well. Definitely felt less raw and more toned down than the other post punk albums on this list, but I didn't mind that.
Gary’s got a boner!
I used the listen to the Jim Rome show religiously in university and he’s a big replacements guy. He had Paul Westerberg on I remember his advice for young songwriters was to “write songs girls like”. He must have been thinking about “Gary’s got a boner” in that moment. I tried to get into these guys back then and didn’t really get it (I think I listened to “Tim”) but young me was an idiot because this album rips. Westerberg (and the whole band) are drunk and messy enough to sound raw but are talented enough to keep it on the rails.
