Reviews (page 9 of 13)

You can see why this was big with teenagers.

Not my favorite offspring album but it’s still good

The biggest hit of the album is the one song that doesn’t sound like every other song, which makes sense. Dude’s voice gets tiring after 2 songs.

Nothing against this album, but I don’t think anyone would be throwing a fit if it weren’t here. On the other hand, ‘Self Esteem’ has only gotten better with age. And after a couple more listens, on the other other hand, I guess I can see why this is here.

good energy

++: Nitro (Youth Energy), Something to Believe In +: Time to Relax, Bad Habit, Come Out and Play, It'll Be a Long Time, Killboy Powerhead, What Happened to You?, So Alone, Not the One +-: Gotta Get Away, Genocide -: Self Esteem, Smash 6,0/10

Enjoyable throwback with a couple of bangers thrown in

Pre-cursor pop-punk album that obviously apes Nirvana on a few songs, especially Self-Esteem. Really odd track sequencing with the poppiest songs Come And Play and Self-Esteem back to back at 8 and 9 and then most of the thrashy punk songs all in a row at the end. Dexter Holland’s voice definitely grates after a while. Decent album, made me feel 14 again.

I was 9 when this album came out. All of our brothers had this album and we would listen to Bad Habit when our moms were at work. Good times. Does it belong on this list? I'm skeptical but it is much more enjoyable than those bands which lean more to the pop side of pop punk.

5 stars to the writer. 1 punch in the throat to the singer

There are no songs I like on this album, but it’s a pretty good album. It’s cohesive and it’s well-paced throughout. I just don’t like it very much.

Actually had a good time with it, pretty decent album.

Correcto

Kinda catchy kinda annoying 6.4

Some hits and some misses. Pretty good album overall. Favorites - come out and play, self esteem, genocide Least favorites - something to believe, what happened to you, so alone

5th grade

Punky, but a fair amount of melody

De övriga singlarna samt What happened to you? är också bra. Däremellan är det dock lite för mycket utfyllnad, lite för enformigt och med lite för dålig melodiös variation. Blir en trea med extra guldkant för nostalgin och för att ju Offspring är jäkligt bra när de är som bäst.

I like these guys. Pretty much what I expected when I turned it on, good songs but nothing blew me away.

Smash is the Offspring's third album, and was their breakthrough album. Pushed by the success of their videos in the late MTV era, the band's well-produced, energetic punk was in line with the 90's, alt-rock sound. The Offspring layers Dexter Holland's wailing vocals on Kevin Wasserman's ripping, distorted guitar, with Greg Kriesel's bass and Ron Welty's drums as their frenetic rhythm section. These are great punk songs, with a 90's alt-rock framework - with rhythm and volume changes, and a grunge sound - like "Gotta Get Away." They likely benefitted from their near-Nirvana sound, in songs like "Self Esteem" and "Come Out and Play," the band's biggest hit at the time. This is good, but arguably derivative 90's music.

It doesn't resonate with me like it did in '94. Still, a bit of fun.

Super fun 90's skater punk album. The type of album you shouldn't take seriously (in a good way).

Intense fun radio friendly (clean versions) of accessible pop punk, but Green Day massively overshadowed them due to the similar release dates of this album and Green Day Dookie. This album hasn’t stood the test of time quite as well as Dookie, but it still hits hard for sure.

I think i could happily like every individual song on this, but it's just samey and I lost interest as a full album

'Self Esteem' the highlight on this album.

I liked their hits, which I had already heard, but the rest of the album definitely blends together.

Not a punk fan, but the guitar riffs seemed a little better than usual.

don't quite like punk - lyrics mid

How could I not rate at least 3 stars? Nit their best work as it can be a bit monotonous at times in both melodic lines and themes. Nevertheless that SOCAL spirit still shines through with its mix of slightly macabre, tongue in cheek humour and imagery

Skate punk vibes, this album by The Offspring is full of energy and sounds fresh. This was before The Offspring became a parody of themselves

Pretty fly, for an Offspring album.

Loved The Offspring in my teen years, and although they might have lost of bit of the spark for me, this is still a really fun record. Favourite tracks: Nitro (Youth Energy), Bad Habit, Genocide, Come Out and Play, Self Esteem (used to be OBSESSED with this track), Smash.

i was a fan of all the hits going in and those are still the major standouts. pleasantly surprised at how guitar-driven and satisfyingly noisy this was. admittedly repetitive but fun. 3.5/5

I think if I hadn't known the three hits from back in the day, I'd have found this much less enjoyable. It's quite monotonous, and the vocals would be quite wearing if they didn't evoke those memories. Three stars for nostalgia value.

Standard Offspring stuff, nothing special.

The offspring wel geinige muziek, leuk album maar niet per se goed ofzo. Prima

My overall impression is that this album is "fine". I wasn't particularly blown away, but I didn't really hate it either. There were a few songs that I already was a little familiar with that I enjoyed hearing, but by the end of the album I was ready to move on. Probably didn't help that I've been on a more chill/mellow music streak and this is definitely more noisy and chaotic. The contrast might have been too much. Not a bad listen though.

The most notable songs were good. Otherwise kinda mid. Not really my style

Pretty good 90s beach alternative punk. The hits are excellent

Crazy taxi soundtrack.

un po' monotono

Ho l’impressione che dopo un po’ le canzoni si assomiglino.

songs kinda sound the same but i like the vibe

I don't listen to this style of music anymore, but for old times' sake I won't dock it for being whiny- 3/5

Enjoyed that more than I expected. Was a little young for it when it came out so never really listened to it at the time -- sound was more crisp and less muddled than I expected which I enjoyed.

Notable tracks: Self Esteem, Genocide, Something to Believe In, Come Out and Play, So Alone

7/10 Enjoyable Green Day-esque music

I’m honestly not sure what to make of it to be honest. As far as the production quality goes, it’s really great. It didn’t feel like it was unlistenable and the vocals sat in place perfectly with the instruments. Pretty good!

Loud but fun. The 90’s were a weird time in music, so many bands sounded exactly the same. Offspring was a standout in their genre but still kinda sucked.

These guys have a lot of energy but not something I would listen to, after 3 songs it all sounds the same

Interesting with the Ska influences along with the rock & grunge. Fine album, but I just don't think it would be on my list.

Very of it’s time, and would have sat nicely on a party album alongside the usual Nirvana etc. but blimey, what an exhausting listen. It is good stuff, but I feel like I need stronger drugs to keep up. Must be getting old.

Well they’re great at what they do, it’s fun, it’s catchy, it’s got bags of energy. However, slow down occasionally lads! Tbh by the end I couldn’t wait for it to end. Only so much 100mph pop punk one can take in one album.

A fun album of pop-punk hard rap and rock that I enjoyed hearing but the lack of substance won't bring me back very often. 3 stars

This brought me back to wandering the halls of Northeastern Catholic Jr. High and remembering how everyone’s parents were up in arms about “Come Out and Play”.

Lotta riffs here. It's a little bit more punk than later Offspring I've heard. Two big singles in Come Out and Play and Self Esteem. Kinda one note otherwise but it doesn't overstay its welcome and I appreciate that.

It's aged surprisingly well. Guitars have this massive 90's sound that actually works well here instead of drowning everything (especially lack of imagination and musicianship) as is often the case elsewhere. This is not smart music by any stretch, but it is fun and full of energy. I never was a fun and still am not but I can recognize the appeal.

yeah Offspring - liked this record at the time but after listening to it again, it seems there are only a few good songs on it, one of which (Self Esteem) being a 1-1 copy of a Nirvana song. score in 1992: 4 stars in 2024: 3 stars (for nostalgic reasons)

Sort of repetitive, but some good sounds

#331. The Offspring is one of those bands I found it hard to get into with any seriousness. The singles are fine, but it's a bit much to want to listen to for a whole album's worth of time. Falls into the same category as Linkin Park and Rage Against the Machine and stuff like that, that I will never really have a desire to listen to, but I probably wouldn't put in the effort to change the station if it came on the radio. 3/5: fine

Classique

I'm kinda conflicted on this one, I enjoyed it and really loved the energy but I just don't see myself listening to it again. I think I enjoyed the nostalgia it gave me more than the actual music.

"Come Out And Play" was on constant rock radio rotation when my little brother and sister were 4 and 7 and at each others throats *alllll thhhe tiimmmeee* and all i picture is my mom singing this song driving down the highway with them fighting in the back seat. other than the singles, this felt very samey-samey and long. dude loves that narrow vocal range and makes the most of it, i guess. 3.5

This was interesting sounding. The Wikipedia page compared this album to Dookie, by Green Day, and I do not see the comparison at all LOL. They are very different sounds IMO. But this was enjoyable enough!

I really enjoy the hits on this album, but everything else just seems to blend together. It felt like I was listening to the same song over and over again.

pretty good listen, more ska than punk which makes it more fun

I liked it in 1994. Nice reminder.

Angry teenage me loved this album. Sorry to everyone else on the road when I was listening to this. It still holds up some for me, but probably not for everyone else.

this would get a 4 if it was less repetitive

cool punk

If I liked this kind of music, I'd rate it higher, just not my jam, but I can at least understand why some people would like to listen to this music. I just happen to be the person who does not want to listen to it more than once every few years.

Big hits but just okay. Shoutout Bad Religion.

solid album. im not a big fan of the offspring and to me they feel a bit overrated but i still have some albums to listen... but nice moments lyrics still! 3.5/5.0

Listening to this just reminds me of getting wasted playing Tony hawks pro skater for hours at a mates house. Doesn’t quite stand the test of time but there’s a few tracks that are still great.

It didn't cause me any pain to listen to this album, but I don't think that it was necessary.

A little noisier, shouter, and sweatier than I was in the mood for.

This album is far heavier than much of The Offspring's other music. Somewhere in between punk and pop-punk or pop-rock, it is a stando-ut in a genre dominated by songs that in general are much more pop than rock or punk.

An example of modern punk rock-pop, i like more than green days, more joy division bass line

Better than expected. Sounds like repetitive punk rock, but has something original about it. Saved 2 songs

Good listen.

Fun pop-punk. 'Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated)' is a good one. 'Not the One' is fantastically, adolescently political. 'Smash' is terribly adolescently ironic. Good.

The great songs are like some of the very best in the skate punk genre, but near the back half the album really slumps, it’s sorta disappointing. If they cut the worst of the back half it could easily be an 8 or a 9 out of 10. Still, some fantastic and exciting stuff here, but the front half is doing most of the legwork

It's fine. Kinda repetitive. Wasn't my jam in 94, isn't now. I preferred Greenday.

If Shaggy was the lead singer of Green Day and the riffs were heavier as a consequence, it would be this album. It was a little repetitive, but I enjoyed a handful of tracks for their unique moments. I think their other work is a little better but I can understand the impact of this. You gotta keep em separated

Childhood favorite

This gets an extra star for the nostalgia.

This is an ok punk album. Plenty of hooks, some of which heavily focus on “woahs.” Some decent social commentary, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. Not bad but there’s much better out there.

This was kind of an anthem in my younger days, and it’s crazy that he’s a scientist.

'Smash' was one of the first CDs I ever owned as a kid. I used to listen to it constantly. To the point where, despite not having listened to it for nearly 30 years, I'm surprised by how well I remember it. This album triggers a flood of memories of being in my childhood bedroom and secretly lip syncing the profanity-filled 'Bad Habit' over and over again. It was so easy to feel like a rebel at that age. After a while I outgrew Offspring and had no interest in their later work and probably felt embarrassed that I ever liked them. To my surprise, 'Smash' is better than I remembered and I actually feel a little proud of myself for having this early exposure to punk. Granted, it's not amazing but in the context of what else I would have been exposed to on MTV and the radio at the time, I can see why I liked it. And it certainly left a mark by both resurrecting and popularizing punk (along with Green Day) in the early 90s. Knowing a lot more about music as an adult, I can see that it's pretty juvenile and pales before the great punk bands of the past. But it's still kind of fun, and a little shot of nostalgia definitely gives it an extra boost too.

I just don't like their songs

Not really my cup of tea, but it wasn’t terrible

It’s punk rock but it’s not totally terrible. A few bits annoyed me but there where a few bits I found interesting.

Typical Offspring...a bit fast and furious

I enjoy pop punk but Offspring would not be my choice of bands to represent the genre. They are okay, but give me Bad Religion or NOFX any day.

Not extremely captivating outside the main two songs. Not terrible either.

Not the best version of its genre but is fun

Fun pop punk to enjoy while traversing the Norwegian Fjords

I like the hits, not much else.

Pop punk is a very hard sell for me. Generally, I find it gets quickly stale from the same fast tempo, power chord only approach. This album is no exception. I listened to it twice, but really tuned out of it for the most part. Unlike many other albums, I found the second halfmore interesting to listen to, there's more dynamics and play between the instruments. There's nothing I really hate or dislike about this album, I just find it bland, and can only imagine coming back to it for the songs I knew I liked before I even listened to it today.

Legalzinho. Não achei o melhor do Offspring, mas legal.

I'm not totally sure why this album is on the list so I'm gonna buy the book and read up. I'd guess it's another turn in punk using poppy melodies but you got Dookie coming out the same year. Not a bad album though, it's very fine and the frontman does have a distinct style that's welcome.

bao!! amo offspring eu acho que foi melhor que o anterior

I'm white, I'm American, I dig it.

A great grunge album, I personally prefer Nirvana

I was 13 when this album came out and the singles off this album were huge. At the time, it seems like their image was hard-edged and angry but not as dark and sludgy as grunge. For a mild-mannered midwestern-American kid, mainstream bands like Weezer and R.E.M. were much more palatable. In retrospect, given the rise of pop-punk (which became so popular later on), this just sounds like relatively harmless west-coast punk rock. Kinda cute really.

7/10 Highlights: Come Out and Play Self Esteem Not the One

Never really got into the offspring as a teen, despite dabbling heavily in this genre. Oh I knew their most famous songs but hadn't listened to this album at all. It goes alright, definitely helped to usher in a new era of punk rock/nu-metal.

doesnt have da hui on it but pretty good nonetheless

Very cool. Inspired by Black Sabbath?

This definitely fits the 'has to have a pulse' criteria for albums I'll listen to. Can't say I'll immediately recognize it, but I won't turn it off if I hear it again.

Kende dit niet nog maar is blijkbaar heel erg bekend?? Vind alle nummers wel beetje hetzelfde klinken, en vind punk zelf snel schreeuwmuziek en dit is geen uitzondering

Not a huge fan of Offspring as their good stuff all sounds the same stuff and their bad stuff is just bad. But looking only in at this album and the time period it came out in, it's a good influential album.

I wasn’t as a big a fan of this as I thought I’d be. It was ok, they developed their sound over time.

Not bad honestly, somewhere in the space between punk and metal is how I would describe this one, there's at least one track I knew, "Self-Esteem," most likely from a Tony Hawk game or something. The energy on here is strong, and coming out of this with a few tracks saved is all I could really ask for. Not entirely my style, but it's pretty good. Favorite tracks: Self Esteem, Nitro, Genocide, Smash. Album art: Very cool image of a skeleton, surely passed through some kind of medical machine. I don't know what it is, not thermal imaging though. But it has a great effect, and it leads to some nice bold colors. Paired with the font, this is a really strong album cover. 3.5/5

I'm really mixed on this one. At times, it's really enjoyable but I also think he has a pretty bad voice and some of the lyrics are very middle school angst

I'll be happy to listen it. I'll let you know!

two albums in a row use the phrase "changing of the guard" the hidden guitar outro is cool. this is what plays in the head of a middle school boy while he eats mozzarella sticks

The Offspring were always just there, doing their thing, neither too offensive not too bland, just doing their thing. "Come Out And Play" and "Self-Esteem" still bang 30 years later. And I'm always interested in albums released around specific dates (see Jay-Z's Blueprint entry a few days ago), and this one came out the day they found Kurt Cobain's body, weirdly morbid...

Favourite track: Self Esteem is bloody brilliant

Although this album was a big success for the band, it sounds lacking. A mediocre vocal performance by the lead singer and instrumentals that are not creative. The band surfed the wave of grunge and punk and only took from the genre, not adding to it. Besides this the album is an alright listening experience. 3/5

Fanno un pò troppo casino questi

American bands just don't seem to get punk, but never mind. This is kind of pop/ skate punk I guess on some levels. It's punk as much as Avril Lavigne is punk anyway. There wasn't anything that stood out in particular, but it wasn't as annoying as Green Day, so I'm going to give it three stars. If anything, this sounded like Nirvana on a bad day, which isn't an awful thing in some ways I suppose.

Raw sound, lead singles great. Very Tony Hawk but not highly memorable. 7/10 overall

Pretty cool I was definitely hopping along I would give 3.5

This whole thing has made me realize that the pop punk sound, while i can appreciate it, is just not really for me. Maybe i would have loved this had i discovered it as an angsty 14 yo. As an angsty 23 yo tho i just wish for a more complex sound. Its not terrible though and some songs definitely hit.

Didn't hate this nearly as much as I thought. Actually sort of enjoyed it besides the fact it's probably 4 or 5 songs too long. Feels a bit weird to give this a 3, but that's where we are.

Some of the songs sound the same. But others are great hits, especially "Genocide". Dexter Holland singing sounds out of place and he's more suited for metal. The good outweighs the bad in this situation. "Smash" is a mixed album for me. 3 stars for this effort.

Overplayed, sure… still enjoyable and fun. Creative and catchy with a fair dose of reckless abandon.

This is an under appreciated album. It's a fun ride.

C+ Time To Relax 3 Nitro (Youth Energy) 3 Bad Habit 3 Gotta Get Away 3 Genocide 2 Something To Believe In 3 Come Out And Play 3 Self Esteem 4 It'll Be A Long Time 3 Killboy Powerhead 3 What Happened To You? 3 So Alone 3 Not The One 3 Smash 2 This wasn't half bad, man.

I kind of hate how much I like this. Not because it's bad but mostly because it's not doing anything completely new/exciting. It just is really catchy and probably hits my nostalgia for skateboard videogame soundtracks. It's not close to the greatest punk has to offer but it's worth a listen for some stand out singles (come out and play, self esteem, what happened to you?, nitro (youth energy) and Gotta get away as the stand out tracks to me)

This is one I had back in the 90s. It's not bad. Not really my thing. I liked the songs for the most part but what dropped another star for me was how most of the songs sound like they're clipping (maybe a victim of the loudness wars?). It sounds horrible.

Lots of high bpm tracks with rock/punk/ska influence, plus a very 90s intro/outro and not-quite bonus track that reminds you it’s an album. Very listen-able.

I came at this as someone who liked rock in the late 80s, and Nirvana and Pearl Jam in the early 90s; I also listened to and enjoyed the entire back catalogue of Green Day in the noughties, repeatedly, because my kids loved them. So I actually quite enjoyed some of this, even though I'm unsure if it really leaves much by way of its own legacy. It's very derivative of Nirvana. I probably wouldn't listen again; some tracks weren't very good, and it doesn't have the "remember when" of those other bands for me personally. I've realised that I've no desire to immerse myself in any 90s US grunge-punk that I didn't already know. 'S alright tho, and the drummer's great.

Reminds me of the 90s and held up better than expected.

Ef það er einhver hljómsveit sem er skemmtilegt í skömmtum þá er það Offspring. Mér finnst þetta reyndar þrælskemmtilegt ska-skotið pönk og mun alltaf hlusta á Offspring þegar ég heyri í þeim og jafnvel bara tralla með vinsælustu lögunum en ég mun örugglega aldrei setja þessa plötu á fóninn til að hlusta á í gegn.

Nostalgic, but don’t feel the need to listen.

I memories of The Offspring - mainly of my brothers listening to it before I could even talk and even back then I thought "this music is dumb". Because of this, I will always see their music as "music for boys" and I cannot override that thought no matter how hard I try. However, I can appreciate this album as providing something unique against the grungey landscape of 1994 US - I know they cite punk as their main influences, but I am getting a lot of old heavy metal in there too and I can DEFINITELY appreciate that. Standout track: - Genocide 4/5: as the guy said, "I ESPECIALLY enjoyed that one", gorgeous main riff *chefs kiss*

Not as good as Americana but still a really fun time

This was surprisingly good! I've never listened to much of the Offspring, just a few song here and there. I always took them as a bit of a joke or a novelty act, due to their "wackier" songs later in the 90s. But this was a lot of fun, and musically it hits hard! The lyrics are surprisingly insightful in places as well, especially on "Self Esteem" and "What Happened to You". It is obviously pretty immature and teenage in places too. Seems like the type of album a kid like Reese from Malcolm in the Middle would be obsessed with.

Dumb, pop-punk that's catchy and obnoxious in equal amounts. The singles largely hold up, the other songs hold their own.

I never took to this album like I should have. I want to say it's a bit too abrasive. And yet, it's somehow not really punk enough for my taste either. And even though it helped set the pace for all pop-punk and emo to follow, much of which I very much love, this just doesn't do it for me. The two hits are all-time songs. And they sound great. And they're funny and rocking and politically relevant all at once. I'd give this album a 4 for its influence but just a 3 for me and my opinion of it.

Not great, just decent 3stars

I used to love the Offspring. It is a bit surprising because punk is not at the top of my “love it” list. This is my college listening sweet-spot. Turns out, I still really dig a lot of the stuff; especially the radio play hits. Still, even the tunes that are straight “punk” come off fresher sounding to me than most stuff in the category. Not bad for a microbiologist.

I absolutely love two of these songs, many of them are fine, still not the best Offspring album. 3/5

A few good singles - but repetitive in the extreme.

cringe

Offspringil on muutama hyvä biisi mut ne ei oo täl levyllä :D Self esteem oli tunnistettava, kaikki muu kuulosti musta aika samalta pämpämpämrokilta.

Ihan ok, self esteem on hyvä biisi! Sellanen 3/5 mut emt millo kuuntelisin tätä uudestaa spontaanisti paitsi self esteemii.

OK. Never been a big punk fan and this loses a point for the whiny vocals

- i did enjoy the intro and outro messages

A rock album from 1994. Interesting start to the album with spoken word. Album name and art implies heavy rock but it’s not too heavy so far. Maybe a high 3.

3.4, sometimes annoying sometimes enjoyable in about equal parts

I loved the first track intro, thought it was a fun way to open the album. Very angry first few songs, bad habit is such a funny concept for a song. Definitely louder and heavier than what I prefer/usually listen to but not bad by any means

Fun album but i never really liked the offspring

Enérgicos y un par de temazos, pero lo recordaba más memorable en conjunto y no me lo ha parecido tanto. 3/5.

Listened to the album many times before. Fun to revisit and I my impression is that it's OK. This one didn't stick as a nostalgic fun trip and I rather listen to something else.

Never heard of this band. Their music is okay.

А ранние оффспринги были пожестче, поприкольнее, чем поздние! Это забавно. Ну местами драйвово, come out and play я слышал. Местами ну.. ну просто мусорный звук. Мне хочется им за смелость влепить четыре, но это не четыре. Это три, даже с хитярой на пластинке )

I've been listening to The Offspring for like two decades, but this is the first time I've actually listened to a full album from beginning to end. I liked it well enough, even though it's not my favorite sound from them.

I don't really think this is punk? It's more like Metallica lite. A few vague, empty lyrics about some kind of amorphous entity that pulls the strings, some vague anger about that. The assumption I'm listening on a CD is hilarious. But strangely it's not bad.

Great way to start. Offspring were always intelligent Pop Punk. It can sometimes sound like the same song but love that energy. The song "Smash" is an absolute banger to finish up the album! 3.5/5

Grande

Funny that this is the best-selling indie release of all time when it sounds super commercial. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t imagine a time when this wouldn’t be successful… the past 15 years notwithstanding. The Offspring are pretty mainstreamy, which is a turn-off in my rock music, but I can’t deny that this has some bangers and its place in the canon. Thumbs up from me. C+

It was alright. Probably won't come back to it.

Just kinda boring

Time to Relax (Intro) N/A Nitro (Youth Energy) 3 Bad Habbit 2.8 Gotta Get Away 3.4 Genocide 3 Something to Believe In 2.7 Come Out and Play 3.3 Self Esteem 3.5 It'll Be a Long Time 3.1 Killboy Powerhead 3 What Happened to You? 3 So Alone 2.7 Not the One 2.5 Smash 2 Score: 2.923076923

Beyond the two popular songs which had a different sound and feel to them, the rest of the album was meh.

The Offspring excels at this energetic sound that really shines through on this album. I think they'd go on to make better ones, but this one has a lot of charm, and I always do love a good hidden track. Favorites were Gotta Get Away, Come Out and Play, and Self Esteem

A fun and iconic pop punk record that’s actually not quite as strong overall as I remembered, other than that delightful double whammy of ‘Come out and Play’ and ‘Self Esteem’ right in the middle

Good-enough punk fare. The lead singer is only really convincing to me when he portrays himself as a loser.

Thought I rated this but apparently I didn't. Anyway, it was a good album. Enjoyable. I was actually thinking 4 but might actually drop it down to a 3. I honestly don't know, so I will give it a 3.5 in spirit. 7.5/10.

Finally, another artist I've heard of before. Although, that isn't much to say since the only thing I can think of when The Offspring comes to mind is that one Sam O'Nella clip. Anyways, this album isn't bad. It's a decent punk rock album. Throughout this journey, I have noticed some things that are common-place for certain genres. In particular, I have noticed some tropes of punk-rock. Tropes that are in here. Most of the songs on this album are quite short and pretty similar to each other. There's some light political commentary, but also some songs that are just there because why not. The sound on this album is good. The singing reminds me of Crazy Taxi, which makes sense given that The Offspring's music was in Crazy Taxi. I've never played Crazy Taxi. This review might make it seem like I dislike the album, but that isn't true. It is a perfectly fine album. 3/5.

I suppose it was inevitable that one of these selections might be something like Offspring, so I have to acknowledge that they could have chosen far worse examples. I guess this was Offspring's equivalent to Nirvana's "Nevermind", although I really don't understand how this could be labeled punk rock in any way ("pop punk rock" seems so lame and offensive to both pop *and* punk rock). That said, I definitely enjoyed hearing "Come Out and Play" on the radio, and maybe somewhat the same for "Self Esteem" (despite its super-derivative-Nirvana sound), and it definitely struck me that these songs seemed fairly edgy for radio rock (but again, I would have laughed if someone had told me that this was some form of punk rock). I also like it that it was produced on an independent label, and did so well commercially. I didn't really enjoy most of the other songs on the album, even as background music, and the super-annoying voiceover/narrator occasionally interjecting almost makes me want to rank this a 2-star album. But that's not fair to the few genuine hits on the album.

One of reasons I'm enjoying this project is to learn, finally, who sang that song I hated. Also, now I realize the source of that male lead singer sound I associate with the 90s--this dude. Along with the singer in Weezer. They should be put in an arena and whine to the death. I am grateful that the lyrics to "Smash" did not include the line I heard as "I'm not a tranny asshole, I don't give a fuck." And I did actually enjoy the song "Gotta Get Away," and hearing the other songs I recognized was sort of fun.

Classic hits, period correct. Liked the songs I didn’t know too.

I'm happy to report that this album started poorly but got a lot better. I wouldn't rush out and buy a copy, but it was more than 'listenable'.

Leur 3ème album. A mis le punk rock sur la grande scène. En général, je donnerais un 4 pour le style, mais vraiment moins de hits sur cet album que je croyais.

Nice to have an album where all the best songs aren’t just crammed into the first 5 tracks. Actually thought the album got better as it went along. Will listen to some tracks again but probs not the whole album 3.2 Fave Track - Not The One

Ja, es ist Punkrock - gut/solide aber nicht meine erste Wahl, auch wenn viel Schönes dabei ist.

I give this 3 stars only because I'm now 42 and this transported me back to my youth when me and brother spent our paper round money on music. One week he'd buy an album and the next me and so on. I was heavy into grunge when my brother brought this home and at that time it was fresh and exciting stuff to my young ears. Tons of energy and balls. Plus our parents said it was just noise and well...what do they know?? lol Got to say it has not aged all that well to my older ears and when compared to the fact Dookie came out the same year (it's a classic and don't deny it) I guess it stands out as kind of failure really. It could have been much more but was just below the bar. That said I've enjoyed the nostalgia trip and it's not horrible...just not outstanding...

A fun, dumb modern punk LP that knows not to take itself too seriously. Could stand to trim some fat given how each song is instrumentally identical, but the searing guitar and wonky vox are distinct enough to carry the whole album through. An enjoyable listen, and completely understandable why so many of the singles here took off given this was perfectly juxtaposed between the early '90s' true grunge phase and the early '00s' commercialized pop punk.

Bad Habit Come out and play Self esteem En gros c'est du offspring c'est pas de la grande musique mais c'est quand même sympa. Et 3 chansons ça le fait

a little better then I remembered. I like the non radio songs way better then the ones I have heard 1000 times. Sounds like Suffer/No Control era Bad Religion light.

das album fühlt sich ah wie eis langs lied wo okay isch

Never heard of the band and never listened to this band before. Has more of a pop edge to it. Not a bad listen.

This gets 3 stars for purely nostalgic value. This was my first CD that had swear words in it and I blasted this in my portable CD player on family vacations. It definitely does not hold up listening with "adult ears" but still holds a special palace in my musical history.

High school memories. 3/5

Very fun if you're in the right mood but you need to be in the right mood

Turns out I cannot listen to Offspring anymore. Am I too old now?

haven't heard this voice for a while

Good times

Fun listen after so many years.

I loved this when it came out. But now it seems a little repetitive to me. Still like it but I don’t think love it applies anymore.

Credit where it’s due, this record is proof of the identifiable Offspring sound. From the clawing-at-your-face guitar cadences to lumbering high-tempo drum grooves to the unmistakable shriek of Dexter Holland, the band presents a barrage of catchiness through their anthemic styling of punk. On top of a focus on anthems, a handful of tracks benefit from a pretty hefty bass tone which, by itself, carries certain riffs into a heavier weightclass. The band commits to their sound from the jump and, even when dipping into ska or intensely thrashing for a full track, put out a record that never breaks character. Unfortunately, it’s not a sound I ever found incredibly attractive from afar and upon a slightly more thorough investigation, my feelings of “eh” remain pretty solidly in tact. Some decent tracks, some really good hooks but it’s very samey. 6/10

Favs: Nitro Genocide Secret song. Been a while. I liked it, but a little samey and grunkier than I like my punk. Still melodic, which I like.

This is my prediction: this will not age well. But I won’t be able to resist Self Esteem and Come Out and Play. Listening thoughts: I actually like this more than I expected. It’s juvenile and silly, but that’s intentional, so it’s successful. Not my favorite genre, but good enough for our album today.

Before they got goofy this was a good punk album that filled in some of the gap left by Nirvana.

# Playlist track - Come out and play # Notes - The opening act, saying "while this compact disc playing on your stereo" makes me feel very old. - It's an OK album. Doesn't hit me like "[[The Offspring, Americana]]".

Some really great songs but a lot of the album just felt vexing.

This is my first Offspring record; their 1994 release Smash. It sort of fuses a metal/alt-rock vocalist style with instrumentals that are more punk rock-oriented. The vocals are much clearer, more structured, and more melodic than your typical hardcore vocalist but it's not quite the pop punk I know. Just listen to Dexter's lead vocal passages on "Bad Habit" and the brief harmonizations just before the bridge on "Gotta Get Away" which sound like something out of an Iron Maiden album. If I had to compare them to anything I "know" it would be Descendants who I haven't listened to in a while. I seldom listen to pop punk but I do think, overall, this album is too long and repetitive; there are a few exceptions though. I enjoy the guitar tone and passage between each verse on "Come Out and Play" and I think this song, overall, flows particularly well. The song takes a look at the loop of violence in the youth while masking itself as an angry "let it out" song. "Self-Esteem" is also another pop-punk classic and one of those teenage girl-trouble angst anthems I'm sure I would've enjoyed if I heard it when I was younger. The following series of shorter tracks, while generally enjoyable and benign, are overall uneventful and one-note. The deeper cuts here I'm sure could grow on me after re-listens but on initial listen, I wouldn't call them highlights. I do like the playful and catchy nature of "What Happened to You?" alongside its shorter, peppier guitar solo. The protagonist asks his friend, who fell off the deep end, what happened to him while reminiscing on what he used to be in the first verse contrasting the more upbeat nature of the track. The final "Smash" picks up the pace, being catchier and punchier than most of the previous tracks within its first few minutes. The message about being true to yourself despite the direction of trends is genuinely good, especially for the younger audience they may have. I enjoy the reprise instrumental passages that close off the song as well (although there's an oddly placed chunk of silence??). I'm quite ambivalent about this record. Can't say I enjoyed every track but there were some fun enjoyable ones here. Enjoying this album depends on whether you're looking to satisfy a catchy pop-punk itch while still getting a taste of the slightly noisier punk and alt-rock genres. 6/10

I was 12 years old when this album came out, which is absolutely the peak time to hear it. I still have fond feelings for early Offspring records before they got a little cringey.

A product of its time. Good but not out of the park.

A band I liked when I was 13; I was curious how the album would hold up since I think they now have a reputation as being sort of cringe. Honestly, held up better than expected!

I would have preferred something by Bad Religion

Music soothes even the savage beast. It's nice to hear a 90s rock album that doesn't bore me to tears. It does make me feel kind of anxious after a while though. It might be his voice. Highlights: Bad Habit, Gotta Get Way, Come Out and Play, Self Esteem, It'll Be a Long Time, What Happened To You?

I like this sort of rock, even if it is quite formulaic

Niet per se mijn muziek, maar beter dan verwacht. Kreeg nostalgische gevoelens alsof ik tony hawk of SSX speelde. 3 punten voor de moeite

Classic of my childhood. Pretty good sound, decent variety, not exactly groundbreaking or anything but just good solid 90s alternative. 3.3.

98. OK - good alt rock. not bad,,,

Exactly what you would expect from an Offspring lp. Had a cleaning project to do, threw it on, added one song to 1001 experience playlist just could've been interchanged with any other Offspring song

Lots of energy. Bit samey

More 90s alt music I missed. Nirvana type sound, like Come Out and Play (Keep em Separated)

If this album trimmed the fat it would be a near 5, but it is weighed down by some of the subpar tracks. Nonetheless a solid 3 for me based on where it does shine with its driving angsty punk ballads. Some of the guitar work is really good. The mixing is weird, lack of bass and drums shining through on certain tracks. I think it'd come off better if the harmonizing was done with another member of the band, but its just the lead singer yelling at me nonstop. I can certainly see how there was a time and place for this record though, as there is raw angst and emotion in the record that I think deserves to be acknowledged. The tempo slows down towards the middle of the record which is a nice change of pace. I think the record is better when the melody is preferred over raw punk rock, as I think they are better at that style of melodic rock than sheer punk. Gotta Get Away is my favorite track with its driving drums and bass which is missing in other parts of the record. The album really picks up at Genocide which has piercing snare drums and screeching guitars. The lyrics to Something to Believe In are excellent, but the music doesn't quite evoke the sentiment. Come Out and Play is the big radio single obviously, and I have a soft spot for it. It is extremely catchy and shows that the band is willing to experiment with new sounds. Self-Esteem is another punk radio classic. The mixing seems to get better as the album goes on oddly enough. They definitely know how to write a pop punk ballad. The record still lacks the seamless transitions of its contemporaries like Green Days Dookie, but has a more raw take on pop punk/melodic hardcore than its contemporaries. The first couple tracks and some towards the end could be taken out and it'd be a near flawless album. It'll be a Longtime is a great transition track with driving bass, drums, and compressed guitar that really rings your ears out. Killjoy Powerhead is a heavy Ramones like track with some great instrumental interludes. What Happened to You should have been left off the album it does not belong there. Belongs on a shitty ska record.

3.5 Some songs were great, but punk always walks that fine line of great/annoying

Solid album with some punk rock vibes, was really thrown off by the ska vibe of "What Happened to You" interrupting the fast pasted riffs and strums of the rest of the song. There are definitely better songs to rock out to, but I definitely would have had a couple of these songs strewn amongst songs for my teen angst. Album cover is very cool, as well. 3/5 or 71/100

1 - Funny Intro 2 - As expected it was anything but 'easy listening'. I can appreciate the get hyped but not feeling the beat 3 - Decent The closing was nice Overall enjoyable Rating a 3 because it wasn't anything special for me. I liked a few of the songs because I remembered them as hits

Okay. It was my kind of jam, but nothing really remarkable, no es un album que busque volver a escuchar.

Good album full of energy, piss, and vinegar. Very good rhythm guitar playing reminiscent of Hetfield in Metallica. The vocals also work really well especially when strained and slightly out of tune...it just fits. Favorite tracks: Nitro (Youth Energy), Bad Habit, Come Out and Play, It'll Be a Long Time, So Alone.

Note to self: do not drive while listening to this. Not exactly late Sunday evening Boomer material...

Enjoyed the listen but very forgettable

Energetic, fast and riff heavy 1990s US punk rock with tongue often in cheek. Nicely doesn't take itself too seriously. Just like Green Day the vocal is forced, raspy and very punk rather than singing. That aside, the drive is awesome. The hits are here: Self Esteem, Come Out And Play. A good link between hard rock and melodic punk. Pretty good actually - superior punk!

punk, stadium, pop

Definitely in the punk genre. I heard some overtones of Nirvana. Don’t care for overuse of expletives.

whiney

I generally like this era of punk with The Offspring, Green Day, and Sum 41. The speed of this album is certainly engaging. The Offspring have some seriously iconic hooks in their discography, with Come Out and Play being one of them. This is another album that is very homogenous so it gets stale by the end. I have a hard time giving this one any higher than a 3.5 with a pretty heavy nostalgia bias. Enjoyable, but I'm not clamoring for more Offspring after this.

The Offspring were my favorite band growing up and I have not listened to this whole album all the way through in well over 10 years so I am excited. Forgot about the classic intro tracks that they put on most of their albums. Unfortunately the Offspring has really worn off me over time and I did not like this album as much as I remember. The hits like Gotta Get Away, Self Esteem, and Come Out and Play will always be classics. But the rest of the album was not as good.

This album has some hits to jam out to but a lot of the songs just end up meshing into the others. Want to go 3.5 but can’t round up based on most tracks not really going places for me. Still very enjoyable though! I love so many offspring songs but some songs on every album just fall a bit flat.

I liked the energy and rawness, but there was a lack of cohesion

Still really fun, but slightly more boring than I remembered. I prefer Rancid.

Brings me back to high school. And Bad Habit can't be beat as a driving song.

Great example of glossy punk. This band is so good. They could pull it off perfectly live as well; even those vocals - the power and range. Really impressive. But this album gets a little one note by about half-way through.

To start with enjoyable but a lack of ideas makes this wearisome to the point I won't come back.

I'd like to give this a 3.5 I'd listen to it again but not something I'd really think about.

Hmm... my first concert was in promotion of this album. Nice memories.

I don’t think I enjoy the punk genre in general. Read some album lore and apparently this album was a commercial success. I don’t like the guitar sounds in this album, I think it’s the punk style. Self esteem is a strong song though

Favorite Tracks: Self Esteem Come Out and Play Gotta Get Away

The Offspring is a very specific style that generally isn't my style.

Måhända kanske inte lika hittig som Dookie, men skitig och härlig. Sprundet har väl inte åldrats med värdighet, men jag minns ju hur det den kändes.

It was consistent, I didn’t hate it. Maybe felt a little repetitive? I think I could just sort of take the hits lol.

Liked it more than I thought. Standouts were Self Esteem and Come out and Play. Great high energy for a night drive

Classic 90s

Pretty damn good pop punk

Ska-tinged pop punk. The Crazy Taxi soundtrack. They have a lot to answer for in the sound of early 2000s pop punk.

I just love the lead singer’s vocals. It’s like….full of rage? Lol

A little better than I expected.

Catchy stuff for sure. But I just can’t get past the annoying vocals. Other than that, it’s pretty good punk with a nice pop/rock hook. 7 out of 10

Never really a fan of The Offspring but this is just what I expected to hear.

Another West Coast band, alongside Green Day which propelled Punk into the mainstream. This lot stay a bit more true to the Punk ethos of the '70's, certainly with the album tracks, such as 'Genocide' and 'killboy Powerhead'. However with the single 'Come Out and Play' unfortunately is the thing that put me off them at the time. Revisiting this band after a very long time and listening to this for the first time, I think I actually prefer this to Green Day, in part to the vocals are better and as stated earlier, sticks to Punk's roots without too much overt 'Pop'. A high 3 for definite. As one of my friends says, if I see it going cheaply, I'll pick up a copy for my aging car's CD player.

This isn't my thing, but even I have to admit I like it.

Even at the time of my life when I would have been most likely to like the offspring they were never one of my favorites. I feel like they had a handful of songs I liked but didn’t recognize any on this. Self Esteem was pretty good. With a different singer I would like this more as an energetic not quite punk album, but his incessant half yell got very grating to me by the end. Light 3.

This album came out around the same time as Green Day's breakthrough with Dookie and Rancid's Out Come the Wolves. Similar in genre, but not as good as either of those. After the two "hits" on this record -- Come Out and Play and Self Esteem -- I don't recall much additional success. The lyrics for Come Out and Play, which I just read for the first time, are actually pretty good. I didn't realize this is a song about gang violence. Self Esteem reminds me of Weezer, but with a harder edge. Overall a good but not great record.

This was fine but a little corny. It was probably less so when it came out so I won’t hold it against The Offspring too much. I prefer Green Day.

Es un álbum que me encantara, tiene dos canciones que podría escucharlas pero realmente nada interesante.

Not my favorite offspring album, but still good! Definitely something I've heard to a point of exhaustion, but still a great album

Thoughts before listening: This was one of the gateway albums for me to punk rock, but I'm surprised it's on the list. I feel like it's generally considered the lesser of the 3 big 90s pop punk albums (...and Out Come the Wolves and Dookie being the others). I have a ton of nostalgia for this album and will be adding quite a few songs to the playlist I'm sure. Review: I know every word to every song. This has been a fun listen, but I still feel like it's a lesser album compared to its peers. The Offspring just aren't in the same league as Bad Religion, NOFX, Pennywise, Bouncing Souls, etc...not to mention Green Day and Rancid. I had also forgotten how some of the cheesy jokey stuff they'd later become known for was already showing up on this album.

I had this album as a kid- I remembered the songs and the cover art, but I didn’t remember the name of the album itself. Weird. Offspring aren’t a band I ever listen to anymore. I don’t really like their branch of punk. Tried listening with fresh ears and an open mind but I still don’t like.

Solid enough pop-punk from the 1st half of the 90’s. I hear a good bit of Green Day influence, a bit of Nirvana…. And the singing style sort of reminds me of Weird Al. It all adds up to good enough, if not especially memorable. a solid 3/5.

didn’t listen, mom died

Hresst og hrátt. Þetta er ekki allra og væri alls ekki alltaf til í að hlusta á þetta. En Dexter og Noodles gerðu helvíti katsí lög og þetta kítlar alveg nostalgíuna hjá litlum RebelSel. Like the latest fashion Like a spreading disease The kids are strappin' on their way to the classroom Gettin' weapons with the greatest of ease Þetta er flott plata hjá þeim og nær að fanga þetta skate punk tímabil mjög vel. Röddin hans Dexters er þó þannig að maður fær leið á henni.

Hressandi og skemmtilegt skater pönk. Samt eitthvað sem maður hlustar ekkert mikið á eftir þrítugt held ég. Come out and play og Self esteem skemmtileg lög, en ekki klassík. Í þessari hlustun fannst mér eiginlega hreinræktaðri pönklög eins What happened to you og So alone skemmtilegri. Byrjunin á Bad habit stolin frá Korter í Flog. :-)

90s commercial punk. Still pretty fun.

Was fine. I've always found the lead singer to have a slightly funny voice but I do like some of their songs.

Decent songs, felt like I could shout along to them if I knew the lyrics Rock, their best songs are also lit, like the Lids aren’t alright

Good music, I'm not mad into punk, felt like a slightly worse version of green day, but still enjoyable to listen to.

I always thought the lead singers voice was very whiny, but their sound is so evocative of 90s/early noughties

This album covers sick, I actually really enjoyed this more than I thought I would. What happened to you was my top song came too late in the run because i think the album went on a lil long. Self esteem and come out to play remind me of so many early 2000’s movies. But yeah the speed of these really depressing songs really got me. I liked this album way better than the Alice in chains one we listened too. Though wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this in its entirety again I can see myself listening to a song here or there to get myself amped up to attack the p*lice. -B

I have mixed opinions on this album. First and foremost, it was a great listen. It was so fun and high energy and took me back to middle school video games. I feel like half of the songs were on madden NHL 2010 or Tony hawks underground. The reason I have mixed emotions is because it wasn’t technically impressive in my opinion. A lot of the guitar, bass and drums felt incredibly repetitive. And while I am by no means skilled in any instrument, I got the sense that it was pretty rudimentary in terms of strum patterns and chord progressions. That being said, I think the simplicity and repetition actually worked. This whole album feels like someone unloading and entire magazine into a tree. Just an absolute release of aggression and frustration. I listened to this for the first time on the way to work today, and it fit the mood because we had a former employee threaten us last night, and I was half expecting a shootout when I arrived to work. I had to call the cops 3 times today, twice for the employee and one third time for a customer who became violent and refused to leave. So listening to this album again on my way home was a similar but totally different experience. The first listen felt like I was amping myself up for battle and the second listen felt like I was letting out all of the stress from my day. In summary, not technically spectacular but tickled my ear worm and felt right for the moment.

Way better than I thought it would be

Good album but not even the best Offspring album

I remember a lot of these songs from my high school years so they are nostalgic but my adult ears feel pretty "meh" about most of the album.

Great when it's breakneck and on the verge of collapsing on itself with super hooky verses and choruses colliding with no space to breathe. The chuggier tracks kill the vibe

Come Out and Play makes it a 3 not a 2.

I like it but probably because I’m nostalgic

I don’t really like this genre, but it’s smashing 💥

Ska isn’t dead

I hate this guy’s voice. A couple catchy hooks but very unremarkable

Very raw album and some memorable songs on here. Soft punk type vibes

Musically not the best but cannot deny their influence.

It was rough both musically and production-wise, which was its biggest strength, but biggest weakness as well. A few good songs with interesting lyrics

a lot of the songs sounded the same but still a fun album to jam too

Big album in the 90's, Offspring started shedding their punk roots for a more radio friendly Alt rock/pop punk sound on this one. It's an ok album, however the hits from this album just absolutely suck. Self Esteem? Come out and Play? Those were a shit d-bag rock anthems 30 years ago and they haven't age well. Killboy Powderhead and So Alone are pretty good. 30 years I would have given 4 stars, it's 3.5 but I'll round down since I'm old and angry.

There are a a few decent songs on this record (Something to Believe In, So Alone, Not the One) that are solid and a couple that are not good (the “hits”). The good ones remind me a bit of 7Seconds first 2 albums, except polished for commercial consumption.

Liked it

Self esteem, come out and play, and gotta get away are classics. However, there is not a lot of song variety past that. Much of the album sounds the same. The offspring are better as a greatest hits album. 3/5

better than the previous few

Half this album can still be heard on the radio, which does take off some of the sheen. Of the 1990's punk that went mainstream, this is the most aggressive, which isn't as much my style. The songs can start to blend together during the 40 minute runtime, but enjoyable still. Best Song(s): Nitro, Bad Habit, Genocide, Come Out and Play, Self-Esteem Listen Again: Already Owned

I usually tended towards Pennywise and Rancid in high school, but this is still a good (potentially one of the best) example of early-mid 90s SoCal Punk that became popular. The singles from this album are still great, and it really captures the sound of the time (that soundtracked so so so so many teen movies).
