Reviews (page 5 of 13)
I'd heard plenty of Elton John's hits, but I'd never actually listened through an entire record before. I feel like this album awoke something inside of me, I don't know how to describe it. But I'm certainly going to dive deeper into Elton's discography. Front to back I was genuinely jamming out and loving nearly every track, I never found that momentum was lost at any point. Great listen, will absolutely be revisiting this record.
A fantastic album from one of the best musical artists of all time. Elton John has made a ton of music over the years (31 studio albums according to Wikipedia), and while I haven't heard many of his albums all the way through, it is hard to imagine anything beating this one. His vocals, songwriting, and piano playing are all top notch here, and there's a certain energy to his earlier work that made him the legend we know today. This record features some of the his biggest and best hits (Candle in the Wind, Bennie and the Jets, GYBR, SNAFF), but I was most impressed with how diverse and memorable the tracks outside of these were. Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding is a very interesting way to start off an album with its dark overtones in the first half shifting over to a more upbeat and light second half. This track is representative of the album as a whole as it constantly switches between slower/darker songs and fun/light ones. While this can be detrimental to some records, nothing stands out as being out of place here which is crazy impressive. Out of the songs I have never heard before, This Song Has No Title, Grey Seal, All the Girls Love Alice, and Social Disease stood out to me the most (the fact that I can remember so many of these songs after hearing them once is not something that happens very often on this list). The only negative thing I have to say is that it might be a *tad* too long at 1 hour and 15 minutes. While I thought this went by relatively fast, there are a couple of songs that could have been cut to make this an absolutely perfect album; however, this is still nearly perfect and an album I will definitely listen to again in the future. Truly iconic. 4.5/5.
Goodbye yellow brick ROOOOOOOOOOAAADDD AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
Greatest hits, not quite Jamaican Jerk-off a gem you won't find elsewhere.
An extraordinarily enthralling pop rock record; possibly Elton John's best critically speaking. 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' (album) utilizes the pure charisma and cheerful energy of John, which in tandem with an exquisitely produced and arranged album, sparks a masterpiece. From start to finish, the album is tremendously upbeat and is paced in such a way that it never loses touch of balancing pure musicality with showmanship all through sound.
A classic
I don't remember the huge extended musical intro to this album, though its got that early 70s grit. This album is so grand in vision scope and sound. It goes everywhere. Its incredible.
It doesn't need me saying it, does it, but Elton has a genius for writing songs that goes beyond mere pop-artistry. His truest expression of himself is in the arrangement of chords in a satisfying sequence - which is why it's never mattered that he doesn't tend to write his own lyrics. They're part of the whole, but the whole is the song. Each one is a journey in its own right - John taking you down the Yellow Brick Road, showing you the sights - a laser display here, a drag queen there, all musically, mind - before dropping you back home, safe and sound. You've had such a journey you don't really want to say goodbye.
This album was so fun front to back. Aside from the obvious singles, I went into this one blind. I don't know what I expected, but it had way more classic rock guitar licks to accompany Elton's fun piano playing than I anticipated. I can't say there's a skip on here. 5 stars all day. Don't be intimidated by the 1:16 runtime... I've listened to 30-minute albums on here that felt like they dragged on for hours. This really is the perfect Elton John album.
Elton sure dialed it up right now. Flawless execution, a perfect blend of prog with that incredible 11 minute opener and great tunes to hum along to.
What a brilliant album and brilliant song writer. Just blows me away every time I hear the title track.
We have an Elton John box set from 1990. I was surprised how many tracks are from this album, how many tracks I know so well. But then again, I shouldn't be; this is probably his best album, by far. So many of his other albums have great stuff on it too, though. Driving into work, there was at least two or three songs that had that 70s reverb and drum sound. You don't hear that on many albums and think that it doesn't sound dated. It fits in well with the music, and does NOT sound permanently lodged in the 70s. Not, almost FIFTY years later, we can listen to it and marvel in it. Perhaps if it was recorded now some of the songs would have a slightly different tinge or quality to it, but I doubt by much.
I know lots of Elton John singles but not by albums. This album reminded me how much I adore Elton's piano playing. Funeral for a Friend almost reminded me a bit of the earlier Genesis album (quasi-prog rock feel), including when put together with Love Lies Bleeding (now you have a sweeping rock song with twists, piano and synth, and guitars). The former is touching, the latter about as good as his other high-tempo hits. The first few notes of Yellow Brick Road give me chills - again, just something about his piano playing. I find it amazing how Bernie Taupin can write the lyrics to these songs and then Elton dreams up the music to go with it. Elton is an incredible composer and as a pair they are pretty amazing. I still have something against Bennie and the Jets (never liked it as much as others) but if that's his worst, that's pretty darn good. To be honest, the back half of the first album took a bit of a dip for me but it closed well with I've Seen that Movie Too. The second album really picked up steam about halfway through the Ballad of Danny Bailey - lots of higher tempo rock that sucks you in. From Dirty Little Girl through to Saturday Night's Alright is a great sequence. I also liked the different pacing in Roy Rogers and Harmony. Either album on its own is good but as a package it's gold.
9/10. Really great songwriting ,
What an album. 10
This would have been one of the most insane single albums ever if it was edited down more. It's a really good double album and even the less memorable songs were good, but I can't give it a perfect score. 9/10
Heard this one a million times... Great, start to finish. 5/5
Not heard before. Only knew the big singles, but this is great from start to finish.
great album
4.5 cause it's a 4.7, but I'll round the fuck up
Love it! made me feel warm and slightly nostalgic
One of my absolute favorites!
Winner winner
Great listen.
Five stars. Easy. Next.
when _am_ I gonna come down?
Elton John lo hace todo bien . guay :)
Very nice. Wanted to listen to it again as soon as it was over.
Classic Elton in his prime. Classic and timeless.
Nothing unlistenable but the number of must listen songs makes this a classic.
First time listening: 17/17 songs liked Yep. This album was lit. I didn't know that most of my elton discography came from this album alone! That intro song is insanely long but felt so cohesive and short. I think his melody writing with the poppy piano rhythm hits my heartstrings. 5 songs added.
Bangers galore. What a journey. Man knows how to shred a piano.
Loved it. Elton John is magical and this album shows his range and variety.
In my top 20 all time. The sheer quality of tunes in a short period of time that John & Taupin produced is unparalleled. Rivalled only perhaps by the Beatles.
Absoluter Hit!
One of my all time favorites.... listening to this in my teenage years seemed like every song on this album was enjoyable including the bonus number one hits Yellowbrick Road, Benny and the Jets $ Saturday nights alright for fighting; then the tribute to Marilyn Monroe-Candle in the Wind.....Back then I bought double album and also double 8-tracks for listening in my 1970 Chevelle..... Awesome album !!!
Never really listened to Elton before although I’ve heard most of these songs and loved them
Delightful.
Listened while working, very nice sound and emotion.
Bennie! Bennie! Bennie! Quite a long album but it doesn’t really matter when it’s got this many classics on it. I know the album quite well and was prepared to give it a 4 but after listening last night it would feel wrong to give it anything less than a 5. A classic and probably Elton’s best.
From 1st to last Elton made a point of sharing his feelings and surprised us with his talent. He is the most amazing pianist with a voice to back up those keys. Favorite tracks: Funeral for a friend, Candle 🕯 in the Wind, Benny & the Jets and Harmony. But 🎧 to this album twice and your list will double. Well done Sir John, Good Knight! First 5 rating
Me encanta
Fun
Que buenos compositores son los británicos gays.
The story telling with Elton is top notch
Bbbbbenny and the jets!! I dont think there is a bad Elton album
Fantastic
Iconic Elton John touches base everywhere 5
Grew up with this album on all the time. Tons of solid tracks
Fantastic album, great variety and timeless songs
Nothing but hits and classics
Classic album with amazing songs.
Fav Song: Benny and the Jets
Loved this! Lively, fun, 70s pop. Good ol Elton.
Classics all, and took all day to get through the album!
Peppy pop music, there are so many solid hits on this one.
Has many of Elton John's Greats! Definitely a 5.
This album slaps. Sir Elton don't miss!
Fantastic album from start to finish.
One of my first deeper dives into classic rock as a teenager.
I can’t lie. I love ole Reginald. Incredible pianist and song writer. Full marks
great album
94/95
I always thought of Elton as a singles guy more than an album guy, but this is all bangers. Ballads, disco, reggae, classic rock - this has it all, executed beautifully.
Les hits sont vraiment des hits. 3.75 étoiles
Super theatrical rock music, with massive arrangements, many layers of instrumentations and a feeling of grandiosity oozing out of it. It's really good despite being long: I love the piano passages especially (Elton is obviously amazing at it) but really everything sounds great and is in perfect harmony. The arrangements on the intro or title track are stunning. The melodies are super sweet, especially on songs like This Song Has no Title. Grey Seal is a groovy ass tune with also some of the best chord progressions on the whole thing. I don't think the album is perfect, as Jamaica Jerk-off, Dirty Little Girl and Your Sister Can't Twist are weaker cuts and I have to admit the album does get a bit long, but it's still one of Elton's best and pretty impressive overall.
9/10
Puhleezzzz. As if I'm not a fan of this album anyway.
Excellent stuff 4 stars brother mang
A little frontloaded but Love Lies Bleeding and I’ve Seen That Movie Too both revelations
Tremendo. Tiene rock, tiene pop, tiene actitud. Canciones muy bien escritas. Entretenidas. 9/10
A lot of great songs and I love Elton John, but this probably could’ve been a better single album.
I've been able to maintain my sanity for half a century by only consuming Elton John is small doses. I can greatly appreciate a well crafted tune, but pile up a whole bunch of overblown bombast and my psyche crumbles. So I've been avoiding this one for a few days (after avoiding it for that half-century I was talking about). Turns out it wasn't only the songs that were overblown. My worry about it was also overblown. This actually a bop. I was foot tappin' throughout and had a pretty good car-singalong to Candle in the Wind. Saturday Night's Alright remains one of his best tracks. I find his weird, affected American/country music accent he sings in extremely bizarre.
Not as good as his earlier albums but still good. It was the beginning of his move to a more pop style genre. I give this one a 4.
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - 5/5 Candle in the Wind - 4.5/5 Bennie and the Jets - 5/5 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - 5/5 This Song Has No Title - 4/5 Grey Seal - 4/5 Jamaica Jerk-Off - 3/5 I've Seen That Movie Too - 4/5 Sweet Painted Lady - 4/5 The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909-34) - 4/5 Dirty Little Girl - 3.5/5 All the Girls Love Alice - 4.5/5 Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'n' Roll) - 4/5 Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting - 5/5 Roy Rogers - 3.5/5 Social Disease - 3.5/5 Harmony - 4/5 I really want to like this more. I mean, most of it reads like a greatest hits album for him. You've got Bennie and the Jets, Candle in the Wind (before it blew up again 2 decades later), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Saturday Night's on here to elevate it up. I feel like this should be 5*, but a fairly weak second side doesn't do it any favors. It trails off after Jamaica Jerk-Off and doesn't really recover besides Saturday Night. So unfortunately that bumps it down a star to make this a really solid 4*. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting
One of his best albums
The hits hit the test also good but not the same
Enjoyment: 8 Replayability: 7 Cohesion: 6 Flow/Pacing: 7 Artistic Merit: 6 Weighted Average: 7.05 Review: This album is jam packed with hits and some deeper cut gems. This was a pleasure to listen through. Liked Song(s): Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding, Candle In The Wind, Bennie And The Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Grey Seal, The Ballad Of Danny Bailey (1909-1934), Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) Disliked Song(s): Jamaica Jerk-Off Recommend? Yes
Very good! Same vibes throughout basically.
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, huh: Funeral for a friend/ Love Lies Bleeding - Crazy move to start off the album with an 11 minute song BUT it absolutely rocks. Some nice prog rock to start off the album hit a real sweet spot. The 4-5:30 min part was on top.
One of the best things about this list is finding prog and jam epics by artists that I only knew as pop acts. This is sweet Mr. John, the second half is a little more musical than the first but it's all well made and has a cool musical aesthetic.
Elton John I owe you an apology. I wasn't really familiar with your game.
forgot how good Elton John is
Starts very strong with Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Candle in the Wind, Bennie and the Jets and the title track, confirming that Elton John and Bernie Taupin were a hit-making machine. The middle part of the album is OK, and then Saturday Night's Alright is a nice surprise toward the end.
Supers strong album - probably a 9/10 for me. Love the first half with the long intro. Wonderful instrumentation too. Didn't like some of the songs in the second half of the album as much, that's what I'm giving strong 4 stars for this amazing record.
This was nice, I didn't know some songs I liked to listen in passing were Elton John songs (the Saturday song, Yellow Brick Road song). Nice.
Is it controversial to say that I like Elton's voice as an older man than I do here? Still love this, 4.5
I've always found this album fairly intimidating due to its length, but I do appreciate the degree of bombast. Tbh I'm docking points because I don't like "Bennie and the Jets" more than anything
I was at the Jamaica Jerk-Off and nobody knew you…
I was expecting to not enjoy this. In general, I quite like EJ but a full album felt like it might be a slog. This was not a slog. Far from it. Really wonderful production throughout. I could live with fewer ballads but fair fucks to Elton, it’s a 4.
There's no denying the excellence of this album. Some of Elton John's greatest tracks are here: "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Candle In The Wind," "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting". Others might add "Bennie & The Jets," though I've always found that song irritating. Yes, there are some tracks that don't hold up well (I'm looking at you, "Jamaica Jerk-Off"), but regardless, this truly is a showcase of what made Elton John and Bernie Taupin one of the greatest songwriting duos of their generation. Now that my praise is out of the way, one somewhat unflattering observation. Years ago, there was a video floating around the internet of Elton John writing music on the spot set to "lyrics" that were actually the manual for a toaster oven. It's an amusing video, light fun, and at the time, I found it impressive—but over the years, I've noticed that the reason Elton John was able to write that "song" so rapidly was because he was relying on certain musical tropes that he's used countless times throughout his songbook. You hear them constantly on this album, and frankly, nothing he writes sounds new or innovative, even if it's great. I can't help but feel that he wasn't much of a crafter, but a gifted musician steeped in songwriting tradition. This does not discount his skill or talent, but I think it does make him less crucial to pop history compared to some of his contemporaries.
This is Elton John in his element, sparkling and thrumming and glittery and mopey. There's a similar lyrical nature to Don McLean, with the almost operatic glam rock verve seen on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. This whole album feels like a spaceship either taking off, landing, or entering hyperspace. Unfortunately, there is a wet dog on board the ship - Jamaica Jerk-Off is downright stupid. Aside from that, this album being on this list makes total sense.
Absolutely astonishing number of classics in this record. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to hear on first release. Totally helps explain the rabid fanaticism that this helped secure.
Löytyyhän levyltä nimikappaleen ja Candle in the Windin veroisia klassikoita.
Very close to a five. Just a few songs too long. Otherwise, lives up to the hype.
Incredibly consistently great songwriting
I'm learning I have alot of stereotypes of artists in my head based on little knowledge of them, this surprised me, the variety on the album is great
If this double album was half as long, it would easily be a five. I honestly was struggling to give it a four, if half stars were allowed, this would be a solid, three and a half. It's unfortunate that there's so much filler on this.
Right artist; wrong album
The compositions are fantastic. Having only ever heard any of these songs on the radio, they are not done justice. Get some headphones. Never figured Elton John for headphone music but there are elements that you'd miss coming out of speakers (especially car speakers). I think my respect for John has just increased several levels. Which isn't to say I didn't know he was good to begin with, it's just not the style of music I've ever given much attention to. One play through and I'm giving this a 4. It might be a 5 but I'm not giving it more than one play today. I poked my eardrum with a q-tip yesterday and need to let it rest (this is why they say not to put those things in your ear canal. What can I say, I'm a rebel).
B- B- Bennie and the jeeets
Easily five stars had it been a single album.
Ellers mye sterk epokedefinerende 70-tallsrock. "All the Girls Love Alice" er nok favoritten, men "Saturday Night's Allright (For Fighting)" er en klassiker. Til tross for den litt krampaktige linjen "want to get a belly full of beer", men kanskje jeg ikke tar ironien? #releasethesinglealbumcut
Has very high highs, shows what Elton is good at - unfortunately as a double it also has some pastiches and some of these (the reggae track lol) are quite low. I think it's still a 4 but a 7/10 album overall
Lot of hits and also had what I think of as a classic rock kind of sound.
I love it, I love Elthon john. My favourite song is Bennie and The Jets
Me encantan las vibras un poco psicodélicas que tiene este álbum, muy al estilo de Elton John, pero definitivamente diferente a Your Song o I'm Still Standing!
Despite knowing lots of his music, I've never listened to a full album of his before. He has a knack for catchy melodies and reminds me a lot of Billy Joel if he were British. It also has a lot for the glitz and glam of the early 70s, alternating between ballads and back-to-basic rock. It's a bit too long though so it gets almost 4 stars (3.5-4).
I feel bad rating this a 4, because it starts so strong, but it's so damn long it lost me by the end. In addition to the iconic songs everybody knows, I really enjoyed the ballad of Danny Bailey and your sister can't twist.
This should belong on a list of 1000 albums to hear before you die. Jamaica Jerk-Off is a cringe moment in an otherwise stellar record.
It's a little long, but my goodness it's good.
Its alright my fav was defo good bye yello brick ill rate it a 6\10 or 2 and a half stars
Best Track - "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)"
Its a great album to just chill and unwind to. Very smooth piano and guitar and other intrusments working together to make great music.
Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding Bennie and the Jets Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Grey Seal Your Sister Can’t Twist Saturday Night’s Alright (for Fighting)
Benny and the Jets Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Grey Seal Sweet Painted Lady All the Girls Love Alice Saturday’s All Right for Fighting Social Disease
contains the second best performance of Bennie and the Jets
I want to love this bc the songs that are great are perfect (the intro, the title song, Saturday night etc) but it kind of dragged for me in the middle and I felt it was overall too long. Still exceptional bc it’s Elton but I wasn’t left loving it
I really liked most of the songs I hadn’t heard before. Bangers all around!
love love love
saw him love i love john
Wow! Never listened to an Elton album from start to finish, I tend to skip to the ‘hits’ Well what a revelation! This is awesome, OK there are plenty of the famous tunes on here but the rest are good too, well maybe not Jamaican Jerk Off, but very listenable. I was too young to be aware of Elton in his prime and only really noticed him when he mad his “come back” with all the annoying shit. You can hear why he was such a mega star.
Kinda like 'Up'. Fantastic opening, great start to the story, and then the rest is okay, but doesn't live up to it's promising start. Justice for Dug
Great album, but whoever told Elton John and Bernie Taupin that making a reggae song was a good idea should probably be put in a cell for the rest of their life.
i thoroughly enjoyed the first half of this album, especially funeral for a friend. i think everything starts to fall off a bit after the ballad of danny bailey and while the whole thing was always a little country, it became way too country for my liking. really picked up at the end with harmony though, loved that one. overall still great, the rough middle wasn’t so bad it ruined the album
Really enjoyed this. Sounds like 17 or so Elton John songs. This is one of those albums I've always wanted to listen to, and just like everyone, I should have just done it. Its great!
Among the greatest double albums of the 70s (and id say ever). Which comes with pros and cons. The pros? Well, that first side for starters. We can certainly go on about the full on camp of Bennie and the Jets (with that stomping piano and glitchy, sizzly outro guitar), or the weirdly earnest idol worship balladry of Candle in the Wind, neither of which should have truly worked but do beautifully in the hands of Peak Reg. But then there is Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, the sort of bold, big, sprawling affair that you would expect from anyone but Elton, and yet he slays it. And that's all before Jerry Lee Lewising through Saturday Night or the wistful haze of the title track. Throw on any two other songs to the end and almost any combination would make this a 5 star album. But it is a double LP. And if Elton was known for anything in this era, it was flamboyance and doing too much. I mean, I remember seeing a video for Candle in the Wind regularly as a kid, and Elton was sitting there, singing this serious tribute elegy in a full old-time wig and faux veruca. He couldn't really help himself. But therein lies the downfall… for every brilliant pop song there is something bloated. Like, as good as the best of this album is, that's how bad Jamaica Jerk Off is. JJO might be the biggest best-to-worst gap on any album. It's audio cancer. And while it's singular in its suck, it's not alone. Dirty Little Girl is similarly overlong, similarly cringe, but at least brings a vibe of failed Bowie and/or Stones. Your Sister cant twist is absolute Fodder. And while the music for All the Girls Love Alice is actually real great, the lyrics are… let's say conflicting. But overall, this hits a lot of stylistic notes, mostly successfully. It's, once again, gloriously camp. The sort of Vieux Carré vibe of so much of the filler, airy and pleasant and a little seedy. The proto-disco shimmer of Grey Seal, which purports to suggest that there is some entity to beseech for answers that goes by the name Grey Seal. The ability to make a song called This Song Has No Title not be absolutely pointless. The less remembered but also solid film idol nostalgia of Roy Rogers. You don't -need- to trim that much off to get to a 5 star album. But the fat that isn't trimmed keeps it at a 4*
An Elton John fan and I’m familiar with this album. Think it will hold up on relisten. First half of this album is strong. It’s really just great song after great song. That Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding opener is awesome. Bennie and the Jets and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are classics that feel fresh and new everytime you listen to them. Great songs. As a whole, there’s a real variety of sound and I think it mostly works. Back two sides have way more rock and roll songs after more ballad heavy front side. It’s all some of Elton John’s best. Not sure the back half ever meets the highs for the front half though. It’s really good. Debating a 5, but might be a 4 for me.
Normally my opinions for Elton John were that he was overly cheesy and quite schmaltzy. To my surprise, I find this album quite tasteful. This album hit a prog/pop/rock nerve that I didn't know my life was missing. I can see why this is regarded as his magnum opus. There are parts that I considered as filler which takes off a point for me. As well as a weak second half to the album which makes it drag. I give this one a strong 8/10.
Day 32 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John What can I even say? The melodies on this album are unbelievable. It’s theatrical at times, but never in an annoying way. Just huge songs, huge hooks, and so many bangers. “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” is honestly one of my favourite songs ever, and the whole album carries that same emotional, grand kind of vibe. My only criticism is that the album can sometimes feel a bit too consistent. Maybe it lacks a bit more contrast or variation between songs at times. But honestly, this was my first proper listen, and I can already tell this is the kind of album that grows even more with time. It’s an easy 4 for me right now. Wine pairing? Champagne or a really good sparkling wine. Something glamorous and celebratory fits perfectly. Food pairing? Duck confit or something slightly fancy but comforting. This feels like rich dinner music. Vinyl? Yeah, absolutely want this one. Favourite song? “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. First listen? Yes. Overall 4 out of 5.
It's Elton!
Rate: 8/10
Way better than expected, second half is exceptional
Quintessential singer-songwriter pop. Catchy energetic tunes while also having the kind of sentimental vocals that all good singer-songwriter albums have. Good vocals and well crafted compositions especially the intro track "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding". My favorite track was "I've Seen That Movie Too". 3.5 stars.
Apart from the recurrently famous songs like yellow brick road and bennie and the jets, i really ended up liking Grey Seal. It´s a very "cool sound" album and makes me think how such thing was written and sung more than 50 years ago.
Siin plaadil on mitu Elton Johni suurimat hitti (nt "Candle in the Wind", "Bennie and the Jets", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"). 4/5
Got some classics on it and overall some great musicianship. Suffers at times from being a shade 70's but mostly a great album. heh - Jamaica Jerk Off.
The influence of this album got to me before the original. I'd heard 'Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding' by Dream Theater before I'd heard the original (both great). Elton John is rock & roll with all the bombast of musical theatre. Somehow, it still never loses the rock edge -- Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson get a lot of credit for the guitar, bass and drums, respectively. It's long, though. The more albums I listen to, the more angry I get at double albums -- even good ones. 4/5 for longwindedness. Still essential listening.
Shocking 4.
Pretty great effort if overlong. It loses momentum in the middle until Elton picks up the rock theme again. A few less songs and a bit better sequencing and this would be a can't miss masterpiece.
This is a bit too much Elton for me! BUT I enjoyed this album much more than I thought I would! There's some great tracks on here (and a few fillers!) I'm giving it a 4, but I hope my challenge mate gives it a 5 so we can have an Elton track on the best of the best playlist - hint hint!
If I asked you to name a postmodern rock concept album, I bet it would take you a lot of tries before you ever got to this one; in fact, I bet it wouldn't even be the first one you'd name by a British solo artist in 1973 given that Bowie's *Aladdin Sane* came out that same year. And yet there are enough layers, enough fractures of (un)reality here to make Baudrillard blush - an album full of Little Richard throwback tunes, presented primarily for White audiences, about the experience of being (not really) seen as a capital-R Rock Star, with lyrics about heterosexual relationships that probably didn't happen, written by a Cyrano figure who does no actual performing, sung and played by a closeted man who may or may not bear any resemblance to the Rock Star in question. No wonder so many of the songs are about media itself - about Hollywood starlets and TV cowboys and the fine line between prostitution and performance, the ways in which the logic of perpetual audience-focused living eventually immiserates the people doing it. In their own way John and Taupin have made a deconstructed glam-rock album here; it's not *quite* as good as the best glam but it's a lot of fun to listen to and think about.
A great, feel-good and uplifting album, with a couple classics.
Interesting. Nice music. Great voice. There were several songs with rock and blues that I liked. 3,5/5.
Pretty iconic stuff- the Elton John & Bernie Taupin combo produced some crackerjack hits over the years.
I dont live under a rock so I am fully aware of this album. The hits are very strong, but the back half of this album doesn't hit as hard. Strong 4.
It's a lot, but the peaks are pretty high.
Exceptional album. I think one of his best!
Not many double albums are worth it. This one is in my opinion.
Several all-timers on here, and a ton of filler Best Song: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Rating: 7/10 Stars: 4
This is a great album with some all-time tracks; “Candle in the Wind,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting).” Even “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” rocks. That said, it’s definitely too long, with a handful of weaker tracks dragging it down. Trim it back, starting with “Jamaica Jerk-Off," and this would be an easy 5.
A lot of great songs on here. A few that aren’t so great. Definitely a great album overall though!
Full of hits. Didn’t realize it was a double album. Fun!
This album is like being in a wonderful dream until Jamaican Jerk-Off rips you out of that dream and then you have to spend the next 10 mins trying to fall back asleep
It’s ironic that the original lyrics to Candle in the Wind really do apply to Diana as well (“they set you on a treadmill,” “loneliness was tough, the toughest role you ever played,” “all the newspapers had to say…”/“Di goes sex mad!”). But obviously that wouldn’t fit for a song played at her funeral. Oh well!
Enjoyed this enough, but wouldn't have it on repeat. This one is 3.5 rounded up.
Elton John is one artist that I really wanted to listen more in depth to but just never got around to. This album was great, especially the first half of the album. There are obviously many of his hits on this album, but some of the deeper cuts, especially in the middle, were really enjoyable. Even Jamaican Jerk-Off was alright, even if it was a little cringy. Overall a very good album.
It was a good album 🙂👍! My favorites were Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Candle in the Wind, Bennie and the Jets, This Song has no title, and Harmony. Overall, I’d give it a 4/5!
rah rah ar maxsovs 3.5 tu 4
4/5
Geiles Cover!
There is so much that can be said about Elton John in general, and equally as much that can be said about his (arguably) best album. This album reminds me of when I was a kid, and my mom would decide to play me "her" music. I feel for it deeply like a cousin you don't see very often but love. The standout star for me here is Roy Rodgers. This might be the only song I've ever heard, and I thought it was awesome.
Some big dawg bangers, but a lot of forgettable fillers as well.
Täysi ammattilainenhan Elton John on eikä sieltä huonoa säveltä lähde

Really good songs but not quite top tier Elton.
AWESOME ALBUM! I actually really enjoyed it.
Elon's best album overall. It may be a bit bloated, especially the later songs being somewhat subpar or forgettable songs ("Jamaica Jerk Off", anyone?). But the highlights and some of the best of his career: The proggy opener "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", the title track, and "Candle in the Wind", to name a few. Key tracks: Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding Candle in the Wind Bennie and the Jets Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting
The first track on this album is unbelievably good. It’s one of those songs that gets added to a playlist and I listened to it over and over again during the day. Benny and the Jets obviously an absolute heater too. And anyone who says cocaine was not good for music needs to watch Elton John play Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting for half 1 million people in 1980 at Central Park. This album is great, but I can’t help but feel it would be even better if there had been some fat trimmed. It’s the reason I prefer Madman Across The Water to this record. I can go my entire life without hearing Jamaican Jerk-Off or Roy Roger again. Great record, might’ve been a 5 if it was 45 minutes long.
I loooved this album. 70s musis just was made different, with more soul, I love Elthon's voice and the whole concept of the albums, the instruments, I could listen to it all day
Nicerr
Lots of interesting ideas in the album.
If Weird Al thinks it's a good album, you know it's a good one. I enjoyed every minute, Elton John has such good sound even on some of his off-kilter songs. It's at least an 8/10 for me. Great album.
Very good album, probably a 4.5 but its not quite a 5. Well worth
First song started super strong. Goodbye yellow brick road was my favorite. The rest was nice too, but they started blending into each other quickly. Then there was reggae? Nice nonetheless.
Pretty good
love!
Peak
Great album, never been a big fan/haven't listened to many Elton John but even though it has "too many" songs for what normally people expect for an album, I would say it resonates a lot with my likings and most of them are a 5 out of five for me. Although there are like 2 or 3 songs that if they were not released, I would not have missed on anything big (it is the only reason for me giving 4 instead of 5 stars), the album in general is good enough to listen to it again.
This album contains really high points and also lows that reminds me of my main view of Sir Elton. Regardless of lows this was real surprise!
This could've been well higher it's too damn long!
Too many hits to not rate highly
Decent album - hits strong, but enjoyed more generally
Great ballads
Однако за Bennie And The Jets и Saturday Night's Alright готов простить наличие любых сомнительных треков на альбоме.
Great album throughout, didn't know much about Elton John or his music and i was really surprised I didn't feel like skip any of the songs.
Some absolute bangers, a few fillers along the way, but great lyrics and metaphors, some lovely piano too. It's not dated too bad either, the remix holds well.
Cooooool
I will keep banging on and on about how a good opener can make or break your entire album and opening with Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is such a powerful statement and I think it lands it. Rest of the album is a good mix of classics and I really liked the deep cuts too.
There's a few songs I don't care about but jezz. You got me good.
Only got through about half of it; an ablum you can tell how much was poured into it. So many strong emotions behind it from the meaning and performance and I imagine strongly influenced the next decade of music
I have been sleeping on this. Really liked taking the time to appreciate the classics on this one but also experience this as a whole. Middle section wasn’t that interesting to me, too many similar tracks rhythmically, but from Saturday Night to the end it was really enjoyable.
I guess when you give coke to a theatre kid you get something close to a masterpiece. This album held my attention through its long runtime. I loved how many different directions he took it in and yet nothing really sounded out of place, except maybe for Jamaican Jerk Off.
There’s some all time goat tracks on here but also some more forgettable ones. The highs are extremely high tho
Good record. Probably a top 3 Elton John record.
Favorite: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Least favorite: Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock'N Roll)
I debated about whether to give this a 3 or 4 - I absolutely loved the hits, those are the songs of my childhood. But some of the others felt a little unfocused. I decided on 4 ultimately because I could listen to this album again, and I really love the ones I do love.
real banger!
I really like it, it has lots of varieties and I love the rock and roll of it. Very groovy very fun. It did run long and it overstayed its welcome
I dig a white boy on a piano but the album ran a bit too long… great highlights though!
I feel like I say it over and over, but double albums are generally a Thing That Should Not Be, and almost all of the best ones* are one-and-a-half album's worth of good material. That's true here. The hits, obviously, are all great. Many of the deep tracks are too, though there are a few big misses (ESPECIALLY "Jamaica Jerk-Off"). And a big thumbs up for "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding." Great, great song. Epic, rocking, moving. I'll probably put this back on again, but it'll have some skips next time. (* Exceptions include All Things Must Pass, London Calling, and Exile on Main Street. I will not be taking questions at this time.)
Great album
This is a great album, objectively. I'm not drawn to his music or style, but have tremendous respect for him.
Solid British pop that is consistently enjoyable
Friend of Dorothy reference almost went over my head. Great for locking in and was shocked at how good it was Expected: to be the type of old 80s song a british mom would put in the car Reality: maybe abit but like a really cool mom
Classic
I like Elton John, but I’ve never thought he had a five star album. This has a pretty big number of hits & classics. Too bad it’s almost 80 minutes.
i like it but it doesen´t match that much my music test ;)
Good album, a wide variety of instruments
The high notes are great but I can’t quite get to 5 stars because there are some very skippable songs here. Wishing for half stars. Side one was pure fried gold. Side two started dragging.
Haven't finished it but so far fucking fantastic and whimsical!
Operatic dopamine making me feel like human bedazzled cowboy boots
very good, reminds me of listening to music with daddy. a perfect album to start with I think
Souds like a claccis, something i could come back to years later, and it would still sound amazing!
Some really good songs on here. Breaks my general rule against double albums, and absolutely could have been cut down to a classic normal length album. First track is solid, dig those canastas, pretty good prog-ish rock and has the coolest guitar riff on the album. I've never cared for "Candle in the Wind" or "Benny and the Jets" (is the album version fake live, or is that just the streaming version I ended up with. I think it's like that on the album, and that's probably why I don't like it.) Safe to say he should have stayed away from Reggae. "Saturday Nights for Fighting" is a solid dad rock song, kinda fun. Awful lot of cocaine seems to have gone into the making of this. Not exactly my flavor, but he can jam on a piano. He has a thing were he moves away from the microphone and holds a note for a long time. To me it doesn't do his voice favors. He's of course a good singer, but I prefer when it sounds close and intimate. Not mad at it. Solid 4 star album that isn't a personal favorite, but is a classic with a huge cultural footprint.
Yessir
4.5 Holy shit, is this my first Elton? That’s crazy! There’s more Elton than this. Right? There SHOULD be. This album is amazing. A joy, so fun to listen to. The hour and fifteen minutes genuinely flies by while it’s rocking. Hits galore, and even the deep cuts slap. Would be five stars except “Jamaica Jerk-Off” is one of the worst songs ever recorded lol
Brilliant, so many hits. Not my taste in places but I'm surprised an Elton John got this high, honestly.
I've learned my lesson to not listen to double albums in one sitting.
YESSIR GOATED PULL AFTER TWO WEEKS OF BAD. LETS GO ELTON MY MAN. Bust it down sexual style for Bennie and the Jetts. Actually a few skips listening through but that's alright.
great album, i wish gay people were real
Great songs, classics even. It felt a wee bit disjointed though, nothing major, just enough to stop it from being a 5.
8.5 / 10
Some great songwriting. Poignant. Insightful. Interesting. Pretty solid musicianship too. Impressed. Has anyone ever heard of this guy?
So many great hits, but also SO long
This was pretty nice
Wooah this is one of those albums which turns you from an Elton John appreciator to a fan. The opening track is so ambitious and kinda works. Candle in the Wind what can you really say. The original here feels more genuine than the Princess Di version which is definitionally contrived. Bennie and the Jets is a song I only knew by name, but it slaps. I hear the influence in Frank Ocean's Super Rich Kids, Beck's Debra, and probably countless other tracks. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is very similar, I'm only loosely familiar, shame on me. Jamaica Jerk-Off doesn't feel like a good idea. The Steely Dan part of my brain really enjoys this album. Fave Tracks: Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909-1934), 4.4/5
Sen finns det ett gäng dolda pärlor här också, typ All The Girls Love Alice, Your Sister Can't Twist, samt den Billy Joel-iga "I've Seen That Movie Too".
Your favorite piano glam album. Some big hits here and the deeper cuts play well too.
Bloated but still gets a 4
Going into this, I didn't like Elton, hearing the most streamed songs from this album (Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye...) I was still pretty indifferent to him, until the second half came: Dirty little girl and All the Girls love Alice are much faster and I would have never guessed this is Elton John, I am glad I sticked through.
This joint lowkey smooth
Beginning and end were good, the middle dragged some. Benny and the Jets is an all time banger.
Not bad, actually. I liked it.
Not my favorite EJ album, but this is a fantastic album, and I’m sure it is not the only EJ on the 1001. That opening ARP on “Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” still gives me chills. The “Funeral” portion reminds me that EJ is one of the founders of progressive hard rock. The original “Candle in the Wind”, found here, is the superior version. Admittedly, part of that is probably my disdain for worshiping the royals, but it’s mostly because it’s just better musically to my ears. The “England’s Rose” version is a staid piano ballad-y take. Not my thing. Also, “Bennie & the Jets” = eternal jam. We do have to slog through the triteness of “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting”, but that leads us to some utter brilliance: “Social Disease” and “Harmony” just make a banger ending.
The best E John album I’ve ever listened to and also the only one. To be fair I enjoyed the majority of it. The reggae one and Candle in the Wind being notable exceptions. Title track is great and Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting are the better of the hits - not huge fan of Benny and the Jets. But other non hits also great such as Grey Seal and I’ve Seen That Movie Too. Another double album and yet another 4.
Very good, better than expected. Quite the start and still some pretty good ones later on
I’ve never sat and listened to an album by Elton John before, or really intentionally listened to any of his songs. I didn’t expect to enjoy it, but this was surprisingly good. Four or five stellar songs and a bunch of solid ones in between. The genre switching from prog, to rock, to ballad is seamless. The only downside was it dragged in a few moments - could have been 5 tracks shorter and better for it. Close to a 5…
👍
Packed with hits, and even some of the deep cuts are excellent!
good album.
FUCK I DID NOT REMEMBER THIS ALBUM BEING THIS GOOD. i know i'm a sucker for progressive pop but damn every song on this album just rocks in the best possible way. the intro to the album is just so good too ugh this really was elton john at his best. the guitar work on this album meshes so well with Elton's piano playing too I just can't get enough of this. the harmonies.... I'm swooning for '70s elton omg i need this on vinyl like right now
Love this record, reminds me of my youth. Classic Elton.
Lots of piano and some very well organized pieces
Always knew Elton John was a legend, but his songwriting chops really show in this classic album.
Big tunes on this one, never actually listened to an Elton John album but I do know the big hits, fun to listen to!
yeppp
Ok album. I enjoy Elton John ok. Not nearly as much as I used to.
I really wish the 70s weren't so chock full of double albums. That said, this album has a lot of depth beyond the singles, the reggae song not withstanding. The title track is my favorite Elton John song, so the album has a head start from my perspective. I can quibble about the cosplay of Saturday Night or the saccharine sweetness of Candle in the Wind, but there are a lot of good songs here. If Bennie and the Jets is good enough for Tribe Called Quest, it's good enough for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L400S6Flz2I&list=RDL400S6Flz2I&start_radio=1
I love the title track and Funeral/Love, and Saturday Night's better than all right. Candle is great too, and most of the rest is pretty decent. The exception being Benny and the Jets, which I hate so much it singlehandedly drops it to 4. Not a fan of the Jamaica song either.
4/5 - I tend to land on a 4 for albums that are clearly a big deal, but I'm not personally going to listen to a ton, so here it is. I like Elton John, but I definitely don't love Elton John. Great listen. Magnum opus. Belongs on the list.
Classic Elton John álbum :)
Love the energy and feel like this album pushed many boundaries when it came out. Not all songs were winners and it was fairly long
This was great. I’d obviously heard the big singles and bangers from this album, so it was a nice surprise to find out there are songs on this album like or just as good as those famous ones. Elton’s voice really works for me as a singer, and this mixed with the sharp songwriting always kept me engaged. Yeah loved this.
An enjoyable cross-section of Elton John's work (Jamaica Jerk-Off notwithstanding).
Never an Elton person. Mad Men across the water was the first full Elton album I've listened to, thanks to this 1001 album project. I found Yellow Brick Road much better than that and everyone seems to agree. The first side is just killer but I don't think the rest is filler; quite a few enjoyable songs.
Classic
There are some fantastic songs but this album feels very bloated.
Top 3 Elton’s albums
Familiar with, possibly own on vinyl, good to listen to album start to finish though
saturday night's alright was the aew collision theme so i'm biased here you heard of this Elton John guy? he seems pretty good
Has surprising depth
many deep cuts
Benni!
Funeral for a friend: why is this one track, is there a story here or is this is just spotify being weird? Nice somber instrumental, interesting electronic take on the theme of funeral and a decent rocky song afterwards, but not really oustanding. 6.5/10 Candle in the wind: It‘s nice and all, certaibly popular and one of two tracks I already knew, But it doesn’t do much for me. He is a great storyteller for sure, but I don’t really connect with this song. I don’t maybe you needed to have been there. I don’t really care about Marilyn Monroe and this song really does. 7/10 Bennie and the Jets: Another period piece I feel like. It‘s kind of a fun narrative and song, which maybe proves the song right that I like that. I don‘t know, I mean she’s got electric boobs, what can you say against that. It got something wholesome to it, even if it‘s satire. And maybe accurate to our time, just a little subdued. I wish they had gone crazier with this song. But his high notes (the pitchy ones), they‘re an acquired taste. 8/10 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: Really nice, melancholic song. It‘s just a beauty and his stoytelling really comes through here. A timeless banger for a reason. Also I understood that refrence. 9/10 This song has no name: This is just a ballad. Like just a story. He does his pitchy chorus thing again and i don‘t know how to feel about it. Grey Seal: A rocky almot ragtime song, it‘s fun, it‘s good heart. Not bad, but not amazing either. 7/10 Jamaica Jerk-Off: What are we doing here. Why is there raggae here. I mean it‘s fun, but its weird. This album is all over the place. But I mean Eltons having fun and so am I. 6/10 I‘ve seen that movie too Another story telling song, another ballad. I think I am to young for this song. There is some deeper medsage here, something I could resonate with, had I shared the experience of being fooled by a woman, poorly apparently. Or the fakeness of dating. I think that is what this is about. 6/10 Idk about this one This album is long man.
Give it a 4 but I think it’s my bias to Elton I like Elton’s music
It’s a larger than life kind of album. The back half could use some editing but the front half is so dynamic. So many classic, timeless moments.
Gorgeous. Elton at his best
This could be a 3 depending on the song... there were some fun ones, but a lot of them kind of drag and started sounding very repetetive.
More like 3.9 The first song is so long and the first half of it is just instrumental. After getting through that though they’re bops. Kinda reminds me of Billy Joel. Also I’ve finally listened to Candle in the Wind, which is a good song
Real good, probs would be a 5 with another listen or two
Yes pretty good. 4 stars.
haven’t really listened to Elton John before, this is perhaps the first album I tried to listen from the beginning to the end. maybe should give it a second try later, for now fave songs are: bennie and the jets, goodbye yellow brick road, i’ve seen that movie too, saturday night’s alright for fighting, grey seal. p.s. i just know bennie and the jets music video is the one i’m going to rewatch many many times 3,5/5
Classic album. Although sometimes I hear parts of one song that sound too similar to other Elton John songs.
First half is a five star record and it's not even a discussion, but where the hell did we go on this back half?? Jamaican Jerk-Off, Social Disease, how did these tracks make the cut? He makes phenomenal music for arenas and he's a clear showman, but this album lost its way and continued trekking down the Yellow Brick road far too long. Then as a final "fuck you" he ends with Harmony which is beautiful and reminds you just why this record is fantastic.
Surprisingly epic, definitely a statement piece of the '70s. Would probably improve with repeated listens
Grandiosity works when the songs are well written and well arranged. So many classics on here, and some of the b-sides are good too. I grew up idolizing Elton; he was the reason I started playing piano. I think his greatest hits are fantastic, but across albums he doesn’t always stick the landing, probably because most of the songs are treated the same; some story Taupin wrote over some interesting chords Elton wrote. They feel a little disconnected at times. But this album still spanks.
good vibes
11 minute song to start it off yeah ts is fire
