Elton's best work. Many people agree with this as its got a wide range of stuff from hits to more niche songs. Its a double album and sure is long, but nonetheless enjoyable for one of music's greatest icons. Enjoyed the first time listen of the album.

Fantastic

We all know that Elton John is one of the most accomplished artists in history. I've always liked certain songs (I'm Still Standing, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me) and his catalog is astonishingly large, but he's never been one of my go-to musicians. That said, I am very drawn to many piano playing artists, whether it's Bruce Hornsby, Billy Joel, Sara Bareilles and others. So, I figured I would like this, but I had no idea how much. This is an incredible album. Candle in the Wind is an iconic song, not much more needs to be said. I know that Bennie and the Jets is one of his biggest selling songs, but I've never really understood why. It's a good song, but there are others that are much better. For example, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting is a much more fun song. I would rather listen to the latter than the former. The title track is another excellent tune, especially the sweeping chorus. It's almost whimsical but it simultaneously has a lot of depth. Other highlights for me beyond the hits: Funeral For a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding: Yeah, the first 3:30 of the opening track is a waste but after that, it's a great way to kick off this album. Never knew that Elton had prog rock in him! An excellent song with tons of cool layers to it. Grey Seal: reminded me of Billy Joel's Miami 2017 for some reason, though it predates Joel’s by a few years. Something about the speed of the playing that felt similar. It had a smidge of a disco feel, which it also predated (at least mainstream disco) by a few years. All the Girls Love Alice: reminded me of I'm Still Standing in the non-chorus parts, really liked this one. Your Sister Can't Twist: I think Bernie and Elton sat down and said, "what if the Beach Boys were on unlimited stimulants?" Lots of fun to listen to. I was totally struck by the fullness of the sound and diversity of these songs. From front to back, it's abundantly clear how great a set of writers Bernie Taupin and EJ are. You do not get cheated on really any of these songs. An amazing effort.

This gave me a deeper appreciation for Elton John. I really enjoy the blend of glam and pop with the doses of prog. While maybe the tracking can be a bit odd and some of the songs blend into each other, it's hard to deny how engaging all of this is.

Outstanding flow. Interesting motifs, pure musical mastery. Melodic and calming.

Always a banger Elton john

Настоящая классика, что тут еще сказать. До сих пор не устарел, звучит динамично и круто

Elton John is really larger than life, and his music is as well. My mom was a big Princess Diana fan (and thus Elton fan), so I grew up with a lot of these songs. Wow- that synth that hits in track 1 around the 1 minute mark is AMAZING. So cinematic and powerful. I can't believe this was 1973! I feel like I'm at the movies. This whole track actually really feels like a great entrance to any album. It is exciting, proggy, fun, and a great way to set the tone. This album is really a masterful one. My immediate reaction when I saw this album pop up was "oh this is a clear 4, right?" but as I'm listening through, it feels like it must be a 5. "Candle In The Wind", "Bennie And The Jets" "Goodybe Yellow Brick Road" are all shining examples of what a genius songwriter can do with some chords and melodies. It's extra nice hearing this back now through studio monitors and getting to experience all of the nuance in the production. It's really so much more than just a few pop songs. Great album art too, I really appreciate how it captures Elton. I love that he is leaving a smoggy city with factories in the distance.

A very good selection of songs. Very pleasant to listen to.

Damn. Damn that was FUN. I'd sorta heard the singles, but never the whole album, and I have to admit, the album is incredibly well-sequenced. It paces out its massive hits, keeps everything sonically in check, and that freaking album cover. It's 70's rock at its finest.

Obra maestra, cualquier disco que contenga trallazos del calibre de "Candle in the Wind", "Bennie and the Jets", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", y"Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" merece estar en este listado. Indispensable.

Classic. Iconic+

Hav never listened to him. Incredibly impressed with the music and lyrics, though I know he had someone write them for him. Props to that guy too.

I was once commandeered to be in a band with an Elton-obsessed maniac. Even though we didn't perform any Elton, it was enough to put me off him for life. I'm glad this has encouraged me to listen properly and give him a chance.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin as their most powerful. This is my favorite album of Elton's, and possibly one of the best POP\Rock albums ever made. To say this was Elton John's masterpiece isn't hyperbole. Strangely, the worst song on this album is still as good as his big, later hit, I'm Still Standing.

What can you say about this album? Besides the popular hits, there are also "The Ballad of Danny Bailey", "Your Sister Can't Twist", "I've Seen That Movie Too". This album is in my regular rotation as it should be for everyone.

Like virtually every double album I've ever heard, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road would benefit from having 20 minutes cut from it. That said, the good stuff is very good and the filler isn't anywhere near as frequent or as poor as say, the Beatles' White Album. If the weaker songs, Jamaica Jerk Off, Roy Rodgers, This Song has No Title, Harmony and Social Disease weren't on here, this album would be a definite five. As it is, it's borderline. Having given this another listen, I think it just about deserves a five. When it is good, it is very good and when it's bad, it's not too bad.

What an album. Thought Elton John was more of a pop guy, but what a rock album this was. The sound and production makes it feeling a lot more modern than it is. It makes me think of Daft Punk and their quality production. First five star review.

8/10 - some absolute bangers on here, lots of variation of pace too, just wish there could be a smoother flow

He may not like the postman but fair fucks

fire — i didn’t realise i like John

Love this album. It’s the only John album I own and listen to it a few times a year. Better than any greatest hits album. His best by far.

Pierwsze cztery utwory na tej płycie to majstersztyk. Później nie jest wcale gorzej. Zmysł kompozycyjny Eltona nie ma sobie równych. A wokal też jest niesamowity. 8.5/10 równane w górę.

It's long but great the whole way through

The most classic work of a most classic artist. Even the filler is killer.

Low 90s

This is a double album. The first album is one of the best albums I've ever heard. The second doesn't hold up, but it's still really good. There's so many great songs that I don't need to comment on the hits. I want to highlight This Song Has No Title, which is a fascinating poem that John brings to life. Roy Rogers was also an unexpected gem. This also made me actually focus on Bennie and The Jets, and I like it a lot more not that I understand it.

Loved from beginning to end. One of the greats.

Excelente álbum. Nunca había escuchado un álbum completo de Elton John. Tiene rock, baladas, temas triste y temas alegres. Arreglos muy buenos y armonías interesantes. Algo me recuerda a David Bowie, pero menos experimental

#6 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ~ Elton John I mean, what can I say? Deliciously opulent. Proudly self-indulgent. Over-extravagant and Wagnerian in scope. This is an album that defines the term 'pop-opera'. Elton's piano and guitar instrumentation is a powerful wall of sound that is both catchy and complex, a sign of a well tuned ear for music. Bernie Taupin's light-heartened, imaginative lyrics, although wavering on outdated, really do help move the sound of the album forward. And Elton's voice sounds really REALLY good here, brimming with a controlled confidence. Frankly, this is an album that can easily leave you at a loss for words, it really is just that epic. Verdict: Pop for La Scala

Absolute banger

It’s hard to find a bad thing to say about this album. This is peak Elton (a peak that would last for a while). I typically don’t like 60+ minute albums, but there’s always exceptions, and this album is one of them. EJ’s melodies, lyrics, and piano playing are exemplary. He influenced music with in almost every genre with this album and it has some of the most iconic tracks in all English language music. 9.5/10 87/1001

Overall: 9/10 I love Elton. Whenever I'm asked about my favourite fruits I say "Apples, but Elton John is a close second." (Big compliment.) This album starts off so epically and keeps up that momentum for a majority of it's runtime. I obviously knew the hits (Bennie and the Jets, Saturday Night's Alright, the title track) but it's the deep cuts that make this album so great. They're pretty consistent in quality for the most part. I'm gonna talk about my favourite song. The title track, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in my life. It gives me chills every single time. I still remember the first time I heard it. I was in a corner store and they were playing the film "Breaking the Waves" on a TV. If you know that movie, you're probably thinking "wtf why would anyone play that in public". Anyway, there's a bit of an interlude in the movie and they played Goodbye Yellow Brick Road over it. I remember asking the cashier if they knew the song and he just looked at me like I was crazy. "If you don't know that song, I can't help you". What a dick. I went home and figured out what the song was and my life was forever changed. So thank you, random cashier who was fucked up enough to play Breaking the Waves in a public place. You're a homie. Jamaica Jerk-Off is hilariously terrible. Fav Song: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Least Fav Song: Jamaica Jerk-Off

Masterpiece! Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is the best Elton's song!

Classic rock, good stuff but not my fave

I’m conflicted for this one, I really want to give 5 stars as it is brilliant, almost every song is awesome. It feels like a natural follow up to the Rock and roll of the Chuck berry generation, amazing ballads, great vocals and lyrics, but there’s just a few songs that don’t do it for me. They feel like filler. I think I’m inclined to give it 5 as it’s almost there, but this album is great.

When this album was released, we knew the Elton of Tiny Dancer and we liked him. This let us know he was a real rock star. One brilliant song after another. One of the great ones.

This review has no title

Wow, echt prachtig

This is such a great album. Probably my favorite of his. It's nice and long but doesn't seem like it. I wasn't ready for it to be over when it ended. Everyone knows the hits from this album but the whole thing is really fantastic and it flows really well. I love the different styles on this record, they go from one to the next perfectly and the whole thing is seamless. A near perfect record that almost everyone will love. 5/5

This might be the Elton John Band at its best. The Taupin/John writing team was locked in, and even the guest musicians and vocalists made this particular double album only a very marginal risk. "Candle", "Bennie", "Goodbye", and "Saturday" are huge crowd pleasers - but deeper cuts like "Funeral" and "Alice" show Elton's closet was still full of creativity. Love this album.

Gotta respect how Elton John decided he would open this album with an 11-minute prog rock ballad and there's nothing anyone could do about it. I guess Jamaica Jerk-Off hasn't really aged well but the double album of it is good enough to overcome it. Standouts: Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, Bennie and the Jets

I know the legend of Elton John and I know the hits. This is my first time listening to an album of his and I understand the hype. This was hands down just incredible music and a damn near cinematic experience. I’m impressed and I want to hear more projects from him!

No skips! I knew the hits but this whole album just kinda flows together and keeps it entertaining. It’s also pride month so it feels fitting to be listening to it now. I definitely will be returning to this album

It doesn’t get much better than this. What a journey it takes you on, banger after banger. It’s so varied in style, yet flows perfectly. An album that can go from Candle In The Wind to Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting. Yes please. Simpsons: Yes

Banger after banger. Just enjoyed the whole album.

Just a beautiful record. I've had it for a long time but for some reason I never properly sat down and listened to it in one sitting. The first few songs are incredibly strong, you may even argue that they are some of the best pop or rock songs ever written but the whole album is a beautiful example of brilliant musicianship and songwriting. The lyrics are very evocative of all kinds of nostalgic episodes with excellent storytelling. Elton was simply at his peak with his vocals and melodies here. How does one even write something so brilliant as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road with one of the most dramatic hooks in the history of music.

Goated

All time classic album.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The Beatles Simply one of the greatest albums of all time.

Classic album, runs a little long but never gets boring! Grey Seal and All the Girls Love Alice are great deep cuts, IMO

Super enjoyable. Starts off almost rock-opera-y in a way I really enjoyed, and the piano is wonderful throughout. Gray Seal was my favorite of those I hadn't heard ebfore

Peak Sir Elton. All there is to say really. Just an epic album all around. It's definitely one that everyone should listen through at least once in their life.

A little bit too long and could lose Jamaica Jerk-Off, but it’s hard to argue against this as the absolute peak of Elton’s pop songwriting powers.

One of the greatest to ever do it!

Such an amazing album. The deep cuts are great too, not just the singles.

bernie taupin is not a great lyricist by most standards anyone could think to judge a lyricist by but the artistic chemistry between him and elton john was p undeniable...they matched eachothers rambling, freeflowing freak in their respective mediums. more than anything i find myself fascinated by how elton wrangles this big stack of taupin pseudo-poetry into song structures and melodic phrases, theres just something so unconventional and endlessly expressive about all of it...and this famously loaded and lengthy record p much has to be the peak of that raw energy. the couple of Massive Lapses In Taste are practically baked-in parts of the experience, and the highs, i mean what to even say man, im not sure anyones ever even Tried to write pop songs in this particular weird, sprawling, wonderful flavor since

An iconic album of the early 70's. Several songs I've forgotten about. Loved listening to this album today.

Fun to be had all around. A masterpiece of pop rock!

This is MOMCORE at its best. Joking aside, this album is flawless from start to finish. There’s no skips and every other song is a massive hit song. And the ones that are not massive hits are not skips, they are actually really good and add a lot of variety to the album like “Jamaican Jerk-Off”, “Grey Seal”, “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding”, etc. Honestly this album is amazing and has aged really well. Please give it an honest chance and try not to associate this song with your mom.

Geweldig album. Geweldige cover. Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting blijft één van m'n favoriete nummers. 5.0

Enjoyed every minute of this lowkey. Super good. Can see the hype.

Wow! I’m familiar with Elton John‘s works, but I never listened to this album all the way through. I just have to say that it’s amazing.

I don't remember if I listened to the full thing before or not. The highs are high, but a there are a few songs I didn't care about at all. Still, very good, very of its time sound-wise.

This is a really fantastic album. It has been one of my favorites for a long time. There are many excellent songs. Despite its length there really isn't a bad song on here (Jamaica Jerk comes the closest but that is really a novelty song). I would listen to this any time.

Great album. I can see why Elton is a classic

What an epic opener, at least mins in before the vocals even start. I actually skipped passed the well known singles, but can only imagine hearing those for the first time when this came out and being blown away by most of them. This album for sure stands up to the tests of time, and I’m going to add it to my vinyl collection soon.

Was a bit hesitant about 5 stars for a similar reason to the Bon Jovi’s album (slippery when wet). Also I really thought there was no such thing as a 5-star buffet..but maybe this album breaks the rule. I really liked his biggest hits. Very tasteful and commercially successful. And I think if he debuted again today with this album, he will have become very big again. So I guess I was wrong, it is a five star buffet!

Really good. Elton John is one of those artists that you realize has a lot more recognizable songs than you thought. I think either so many hits and just the level of artistry it’s an easy 5. I’m not crazy familiar with his body of work past the hits but this is known to me as an iconic album and I get it.

this album is an absolute juggernaut. candle in the wind, bennie and the jets, goodbye yellow brick road, saturday nights alright... all in the same album is already a pretty stacked cast. starting with funeral for a friend / live lies bleeding sets the stage for an epic album, showcased in a singular epic song. rocking anthems like your sister can't twist and dirty little girl spice change things up. this song has no title, almost bringing a tear to my eye i cant accurately describe this album, but its great. it checks every box and really is a unique piece of work.

Can’t name many double albums better than this

Not yet finished, but this album is simply fun... And is also good, what more do I need...

All good. Classic.

I can't tell if a few songs in the middle are mediocre or if the rest is just that good. Probably both. Tumbleweed with the two "bonus tracks" is still the better double album.

Awesome

The swagger to start your double album with a largely instrumental track lmao. These arrangements though, wow - simply stunning in their complexity. You never know whats coming next but it nearly always lands. Gutsy explorations of far flung global sounds. also so rippin guitar riffs. Listened to: walking home from work. Favorite tracks: Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, The Girls Love Alice, Roy Rodgers

Man, this really does feel like Elton John's magnum opus, starting with the first track. And I really do think that Elton is the very best of his little niche of pop rock, piano heavy glam rock. This really is just a great, complete album. It does everything well and just sounds so good. It also has some of Elton's best hits, and even some of the other tracks stand out on their own. I think the genre/style does kind of cap its greatness though. There's something about Elton John's music that just feels safe. Like there's never going to be anything that surprises you or catches you off guard (in a good way). And I mean that in, this is a top 150 album all-time, easily, but I would be surprised if anyone had it in their 25, or even top 50, maybe. Favorite Song(s): Benny and the Jets, I've Seen That Movie Too, Saturday Night's Alright, Roy Rogers

Doesn't feel it's length at all, fantastic songwriting throughout. Maybe it's not the best idea to start with the two best songs on the album, but there's plenty throughout to keep me interested.

so many hits on that album. elton john just a classic!

Wow this is incredible. Songs are mostly driven by the piano and Elton’s voice but that can do so much. So much energy and such a range of expression. I thought this would sound dated and corny but it’s just mind blowingly good.

Amazing.I loved listening to 'Funeral for a Friend', 'Grey Seal' and 'Dirty Little Girl' for the first time as well. 'Social Disease' too, I mean there's just enough great tracks on here that I can't not like this album. The synths on some of these tracks sound absolutely timeless as well.

So much better than I expected!

honestly wasn’t expecting to love it as much as i did, 5/5!

amazinggggg

I’d never heard this album in full and I love it! That opener had me on the floor! Definitely a new favorite song. There were so many genres and styles in this that it kept the length entertaining. And of course the absolute amazing classic Elton John songs are all on here. Overall incredible!!

oh. this guy fucks. top 5 gay man of all time.

Excellent album

Overly self-indulgent at 1h15? Absolutely. Is Jamaican jerk-off just a terrible song? Absolutely! Do some of the lyrics ("dirty little girl", "social disease") not age so well? Absolutely!! But it's also fantastic stuff, generally

Fantastic album super uplifting and upbeat never heard anything like it

Masterpiece. Elton and Bernie at their peak. The songs have a lot of depth and Elton’s voice is at its best. Hard to believe the lyrics and music are written at completely different times.

A superb showcase of the many talents of Elton John. Maybe a bit longer than it needed to be, this album is still chock full of superb songs.

This is absolutely awesome. It’s so over the top, but in all the best ways possible. The album stays interesting all the way through and has such an amazing energy that drives the whole project. Favourite tracks: Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I’ve Seen That Movie Too, Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)

First one.... great 😃

Weird week this week. Two Elton John albums and one from Culture Club. Elton wins the flamboyant front man comp hands down. The other album was Madman Across the Water which I gave two stars for a bunch of filler wrapped around one hit. This one on the other hand is packed with goodness. I am glad I got them both in close proximity. GYBR gets out there, much more experimental and this record has a lot more swing to it, making it altogether more palatable. Elton also gives his supporting musicians more room to breathe this time around and that makes for some really stellar moments. Two years of coke cracked that egg, and inside the egg was classic jams.

Great record, Candle in the wind had tears welling up at the bus stop. Such a great song writing combination Elton & Bernie Polymath

I was expecting a classic album full of iconic songwriter tunes. I got that, but I also got Jamaican jerk off, a prog rock intro, and two country songs at the end. Never change Elton John, never change.

Piano Rock done right, basically no bad songs and only 2 I'd say don't interest me much. Just a great album, easy to listen to but still complex in its song writing and musical pieces. Surprisingly varied too.

love it

This is such a great album. It has a lot of variety.

This album is pretty incredible, with one of the best opening 4 track runs I've ever heard. I've only recently gotten into Elton John; having never really listened to his 70s albums I thought he was a bit of a hack. I see now the error of my ways though. The songwriting and piano are fantastic, and there's only 2 or 3 duds (Jamaica Jerk-off, Dirty Little Girl and Roy Rodgers). That's to be expected with a double album though, especially when multiple genres are experimented with. None of them are bad enough to knock this though, 9/10.

I only really know Elton’s hits and tbh most of the ones I knew were on this album. It was an incredible journey from start to finish and I had a blast. It’s clear why Elton John is considered one of the greats and this album is him at his best

C’mon. It’s Elton John. It’s like hating ice cream and puppies. You’re just objectively wrong. This album has so many bangers and it’s his magnum opus for a reason.

One of my favorite albums.

Sounds like “true” music Definitely unforgettable

Really great stuff, but a bit bloated. There’s a solidly 5/5 album in there, but I’d give it a 4.7.

If this was a single album would probably be top 5 of all time but will have to settle for just being one of the best all of all time

Am familiar with most of the hits here, but never listened through this album until now. I honestly assumed some of these tracks would have been spread out over more albums because there's so many bangers.

He has such a large collections of hits, this is almost a greater album. Pure 70s gold.Even the clunkers are better than others

Great album

Great classic

It's Elton John. You don't need me to tell you that it's a banger.

while elton john certainly had his share of hits before this release, this album made him into a superstar. very eclectic, depending on the song you hear influences of glam rock, disco, reggae, and even a little country thrown in for good measure. themes of mortality, the media’s role in celebrity worship, homosexuality, and addiction are explored. it is one of my favourite double albums of all time and starts with my favourite 2 opening songs ever with “funeral for a friend” which morphs into “love lies bleeding”. this one is an all timer, kids. do not miss out on this one. highlights: “candle in the wind” “this song has no title” “i’ve seen that movie too” “saturday night’s alright for fighting”

You know what it's like, you start saying 'Goodbye' and before you know it it's an hour and sixteen minutes later.

Really glad we had this over the weekend. Considering its Elton's critically most acclaimed album, I wanted to give it some just time. The prog/glam feel at the start of the album was pretty shocking. Its not the side of him that Im used to, but it was entertaining. Curious to read what others thought there. Bennie and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road were slammin' back to back hits. Bennie might be a top 100 rock and roll song for me. The middle of the album was really dense and quite the range. Ballads everywhere... I really liked I've Seen That Movie Too, Sweet Painted Lady (very Parisian sound, not a surprising theme - prostitutes). Dirty little Girl showed Eltons true rock side. The back quarter of the album was good too, but a bit of filler. I thought Your Sister Can't Twist shouldve been kicked off the album entirely. Saturday Night's alright for Fighting is so epic. Social Disease was great too! Ill definitely be working my way back whenever im in the mood for glam rock. Great album overall. 4.25 stars and rounding up to 5

I go back and forth on whether I like Billy Joel or Elton's catalogue more. I think most days I'm an Elton guy. Don't tell the guys back in NY and Philly. I had listened to this album recently after listening to the Strong Songs on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Even if a little unedited at times, there's just so much to love here. Apart from the classics, Grey Seal is the highlight for me. Other surprises I hadn't heard as often: All the Girls Love Alice, Social Disease, Dirty Little Girl. Yes, Jamaica Jerk-Off kind of sucks, but still a top album overall for me.

What a gift to the music world!

This is brilliant. I’m so glad I’m listening on my good headphones because it gives me a new appreciation for the complexity in Elton’s music. He truly is a genius. “Bennie and the Jets” on these headphones is a revelation…also did I miss that this whole time the radio version is played live? Okay I am gonna have to google that one…lol. “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” is obviously a great song but I don’t think I truly appreciated it until hearing it here. One thing that’s clearer for me here is his background singers…wow, crisp and illuminating. I think Elton is so much more than the piano, he is almost more like someone who writes symphonies. You’ll be listening and all of a sudden…a little lick from a guitar that JUST belongs there, you know? The jamming at the end of “Grey Seal” is like some of the best shit I’ve ever heard. Yesterday I read an article that called “Jamaica Jerk Off” as a really bad song on a perfect album, so haha will I agree? Okay it is bad, the fake accents, the ska guitar and what tf is it about really. Interestingly enough, there is a lot that’s redeemable here…a few changes in style, and maybe a whole new concept I’d be impressed.

I knew some songs but hadn't heard the whole album. It was great.

Not my cup of tea, really, but I reckon this is a bit of a classic album from a period in Elton John and Bernie Taupin's careers where they must have so inspired and productive. This isn't an album I had listened to all the way through before, but I'm glad I did - barring a couple of clunkers, a solid set of songs with a strong thematic approach. Not an album I'll play much in the future though.

Never heard the b sides or other tracks sans the classic rock stations. super terrific effort double album

I've heard this album a zillion times. It's hard for me to rate it just because I know the tunes so well.. its not a fresh listen.

easy 5️⃣

Pre-listening thoughts: as excited as I am to get this album (I’ve already heard like over half of it atp), I am upset that we keep getting high rated albums in our first 250. Reallyyyy don’t want to be left with just slop at the end of this journey. So please divide the slop more evenly across our journey, random generator. And save some of these good albums for later!! Post/during listening thoughts: usually I’m not one for long instrumental tracks but I was propelled 5 mins into this opener without really realizing. It’s stunning, even before the lyrics come in. The first four track run is historical. This is just a classic record with so many underrated songs despite how huge it is. Also shoutout to Bernie Taupin. Lyrics are masterful. I can excuse the travesty that is Jamaica Jerk Off because everything else is insanely good. This is what I was expecting from Madman Across The Water - great ballads but mixed with other stuff. 9.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: yes Fav tracks: all of it except Jamaica Jerk Off 😭 Least fav tracks: Jamaica Jerk Off

Yes please and some more

Really enjoyed how listening to the full album made it clear how distinctive and impactful Elton's sound and style are.

I'll admit sometimes an album gets a better rating from me because I was high

I love this album. Such and easy listen.

Absolute classic. So listenable

10 ★★★★★

The first LP is a masterpiece, and although there is a slight dip to the second one, it is still one of the all-time greats. 5 stars

Elton and his backing band at the very top of their game during the height of glam and expanding out into eclectic double album territory with album cuts as strong as the proggish Funeral For A Friend, surging Grey Seal, Sweet Painted Lady, Harmony and Ballad Of Daniel Bailey. Also hilarious crapcuts like Jamaica Jerk Off and Your Sister Can’t Twist just for some extra eclecticism. This is not to mention the 4 legendary hit singles which populate every Elton best of from here on in. This is an absurdly fun and firm 5 star album.

GYBR is the artistic peak for Elton John. It's the culmination of his early classic period. And he would never quite reach this height, despite a lot of quality work to follow. The album runs nearly 80 minutes; and there's not a skippable track from start to finish.

Amazing !

Just excellent. So much fun. Great blues, rock, funk, and new age sounds. Elton john is incredible, even if a couple tracks drag. I didn’t wanna skip a song the entire hour.

Elton John at his best

Still an amazing album after all these years. Great songs, great melodies, great lyrics, great vocals and a variety of musical styles.

Love Elton.

Elton and Bernie on top of their creative souls,

classic Elton John, with a fabulous opener, and songs we all know

I can't think of a better album by Elton John and at least one of his albums deserve a 5 star and I remember when this first came out when I was young

Got to see Candel in the Wind performed after the passing of Ryan White at FarmAid IV. What a great moment. Probably the quintessential Elton album.

Bernie and Elton at their brightest. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is fantastic start to finish. This album deserves all 5 sparkling glitter covered feather boa wearing stars.

I mean it's just a fantastic album! One of if not the best Elton has to offer. So many legendary songs. Easy 5 star album!

STELLAR ON ALL COUNTS

This album rocked. Elton John is NOT soft-ass shit. Some classics and no low points.

Incredible album

Simply brilliant

This is my second favorite Elton album, slightly behind "Dont Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player". The wife would probably throw something at me if I don't give it 5 stars. It's hard not to anyway. :-)

Absolute essential. I’ve never listened all the way through and am blown away by the sheer number of classics on this one album. Sheesh!

The synergy between Elton John and Bernie Taupin was never stronger than it is here. Even the weaker songs sparkle.

Really the best. When Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting) came on I transcended.

Truly an excellent album. No skips listening (though I don’t love Bennie and the Jett’s)

beginning to think that this elton john guy is gay

Sacrilegio absoluto no escuchar el álbum, es un hito inamovible.

elton john paved the yellow brick road with gold

Funeral For a Friend is terrible. I was on my way to hating this album when Love Lies Bleeding kicks in and I was hooked. Elton John and Bernie Taupin combined to make a masterpiece. It's undeniable.

Bangers

It's always hard for a double album to maintain the momentum the whole way through, and maybe this one doesn't quite, but the first half is so so good. Nothing bad to say about any of the 8 tracks but Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding is an incredible opener. Grey Seal stood out as well amidst the other hits. On the back half, I liked The Ballad of Danny Bailey and All The Girls Love Alice. Saturday Night's Alright is a classic anthem and Harmony pulls everything together. It's bombastic, fantastic, and a brilliant legacy for Elton John.

Eklektisk, veldig langt, men sykt bra

I saw the 11 minute opener and about rolled my eyes….but quickly realized it was something magical and amazing! The whole album was WOW! Everyone knows the hits but I realized I had never actually listened to Elton John. And I absolutely have a new favorite.

My absolute favorite Elton John album

❤️

Wow. Never really listened to Elton John's music. Thought it was boring. But, I was so very wrong. This album is very diverse in its expressions. Love it. I will keep listening to it.

What a great album. I loved it from beginning to end. Such great musicality across the board and a really easy flow from one song to the next. Nothing felt disjointed and all of the songs felt necessary to the album. The opener at 11min is daunting when you look at it, but it really sets up the album for success by giving you strong instrumentals and new arrangements.

Excellent album that works both as a comfort listen and an intricate work meant for analyzing on multiple listens

4-5 all time hits and a bunch of other really really good songs. This has gotta be up there with some of the all time albums.

There are too many good songs on this album to give it any less than five stars. Some of the songs drag and there is a little too much of a psychedelic influence on some tracks but I just can’t give an album with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on any less than top marks.

This is one of my all time favourites. Great song after great song. Lyrics and music are almost perfect. Can't say much more about this one.

Honestly it was a great great album. 10

Beautiful! Love some Elton!!

Peak Elton. Could have cut a couple of the songs but with a runtime of 1:17 that’s quite forgivable. Overall a fantastic album.

Double album with an 11-minute-long opening track. Very brave and it works. The album has so much variety from ballads, Reggae, and rock. everything is nailed and perfect. It’s an easy 5/5 album Favourite song: Bonnie and the Jets and Saturday Least favourite: Jamaica jerk off. this really didn’t work. Album artwork: I love the cover

love love love

I unashamedly love Elton John and have done a deep dive on his early albums. Along with the myriad of hits, there’s some great hidden gems here too. Possibly my favorite solo artist of all time next to the white dude who raps in the Ace of Base songs, that man is a lyrical maestro.

Just realized that he's backing out of the Yellow Brick Road and not stepping onto it.

Classic

What I think is Elton Johns masterpiece. Pace is faster and more rock and rollish. Altough a lot of piano he definitively made the best and made it work for him without losing the rock and roll and adding to it making it kind of unique. With the pianoman Billy Joel pushing towards a more popish rock, elton kept it hard and indie with even a little bit of ska. This is a once in a lifetime album for the time and place was determining in the place of rock pop genere. Excelent in all aspects a 5 star job

Elton john, my man <3 <3

Album #2 I own on vinyl in such a short period of time, which is very weird. However, it's a very welcoming slice of familiarity since Elton John is one of my all time favorite musicians. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road isn't my favorite Elton record but it's the one where Bernie Taupin's lyrics hit the perfect balance of excessive and practical, where EJ's piano work and arrangements made things click beyond a reasonable doubt. Rock of the Westies is a criminally underrated American-style coke rock romp (and works as a perfect foil to this record), but his best argument as essential to pop canon is this record. Even before I came into knowledge of EJ's catalogue, "Candle in the Wind", "Bennie and the Jets", "Saturday Night's Alright" are all omnipresent in pop culture. On top of being instantly memorable, they make great arguments for the variety of Elton/Taupin as a writing duo: from the ballad, to tbe rocker, to the prog rock suite, to the (dubiously offensive) reggae track; all the musical bases needed to sell are covered here and it pays off tremendously. It would feel boardroom-manufactured ala Thriller if it wasn't so unabashedly Elton. 9/10

Wow, what a great album. I wasn't much into Elton John when I was younger, but the more I listen to his 60s-70s albums, the more I understand what a musical genius he is. So many great tracks on here, from the singles that everybody knows, to some of the longer, more instrumental pieces. And a couple of just flat out goofy ones. The whole thing is enjoyable front to back.

This album has a few of his best known songs, but the entire thing plays well all the way through, which is unusual for a double album.

Elton John at his best.

Nice album!

Amazing album!

Incredible, one of the best records of the entire decade. This is John and Taupin at their very height. Great backing band including guitarist Davey Johnstone who adds so many signature parts and hooks. Tasteful but interesting production from Gus Dudgeon. So many great songs including Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I’ve Seen That Movie Too, All The Girls Love Alice, and Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting. A couple clunkers too especially Jamaica Jerk-off but the album is strong and varied enough to overcome those. 5 / 5 classic.

Incredible album. No notes.

Desert island album. Grew up on this album spinning on vinyl at my parents house so the nostalgia factor only solidifies that.

My only regret is that I didn't listen to this on Saturday night

An all time classic by the man Elton John. The whole album keeps to focused on Elton's gorgeous piano work while having some amazing percussion backing that piano.

the opening song was incredible and followed immediately by some of Elton's most popular tracks. the rest of the songs are good but they fall a little flat in comparison

Is this his greatest album? It may be. Even though there are a few snoozers, I feel like Elton John and Bernie Taupin were at height of their creative powers. 9/10.

omg that piano

Man what an album! This is hands down my favourite Elton John album. It shows great breadth with great ballads such as "Candle in the Wind" and "Good bye yellow brick road" to energetic party songs like "Saturday Night's Alright (for fighting)". This album has really grown on me throughout the years and what really stands out is Elton's lyricism, piano playing and singing. It just breathes a playfulness. My one gripe is that I really like "This song has no Title" during the verses but I think the chorus is terrible, it's such a missed opportunity. Through it's long playtime it really only has a few lulls with some songs that are "just ok" but other than that is is hits more or less all the way. Easy 5 star!

I like the first half better but can’t complain

Elton knows his shit. Except for that Wankin’ Jamaican track.

Elton’s Classic Double Album. Favorite track: Bennie and the jets other picks: goodbye yellow brick road, i’ve seen that movie too, sweet painted lady, all the girls love alice

pleasant music - brilliant voice - wow

A double dose of Elton! Such joy. Another fantastic album.

Extremely diverse album! It started with an eleven minutes long prog rock masterpiece, and it continued with one of the most recognizable songs from Sir Elton, and a beautiful one as well. Every song on this record is amazing in its own right. Amazing, very very good musically speaking, and it gets the listener through a variety of genres.

I remember hearing Elton John on a classic rock radio station and had a weird debate in my head: Is Elton John really rock or was he more pop? His music never fully came across to me as “classic rock”. Maybe it’s because his weapon of choice was the piano, as opposed to the tried and true guitar. But I come to realize that debating whether Elton John fits the classic rock vibe was pointless. Because Goodbye Yellow Brick Road shows that Elton John was above simple labels. He travels across many genres and excels at each of them. (except reggae, maybe don’t do that one again. Looking at you Jamaican Jerk-Off) I will admit that around parts 2&3, the album’s power fades a little, which I’m learning is probably standard for double albums or any album longer than a hour. But the songs that hit have an immense impact. The singles spawned by this album have followed me for all my life, even if I never was around when this album was released (I’m in my twenties, so I have my parents to thank for exposing me to this album, along with other 70’s music). The memories of summer barbecues with Bennie and the Jets blasting from the speakers is the kind of shit that will follow me for the rest of my life. It’s the impact of those songs that elevate the album for me. So to answer my previous question, is Elton John classic rock or pop, I would say who gives a fuck. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is iconic and that’s good enough for any radio station. Favorite track: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Other hits: Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Bennie and the Jets, Candle in the Wind, Saturday’s Alright (For Fighting), Roy Rogers, Grey Seal, This Song Has No Title

Classic Elton John album. Timeless.

The Jamaica song is the only miss on this one

Not an Elton John fan, but enjoyed this album.

Classic. 9/10

Helt enorm god plade. Meget mellow, flere klassikere. Candle in the Wind, kæmpe klassiker. Leder også bare ind med meget flot instrumental langt nummer der sætter hele scenen. Saturday Night's Alright er der på den anden side virkelig godt gang i. Det kan sgu lidt det hele.

How can you not give this album five stars? It’s an incredible album with so many strong hits, and the deeper cuts are solid. Always a pleasure to listen to.

Far more diverse than expected. I also knew more songs than I expected. So overall, very unexpected.

One of the best albums ever recorded.

Beste album ooit

Excellent

Would have given 4.5 but some absolute bangers. Classic

Would have given 4.5 but absolute classic - candle in the wind benny and the jets and Saturday night gotta go 5

Huge hits, surprised me how good it was. Definitely inspired to dive further into his catalogue

an absolute classic, i love this album

How did I not give this all the stars?

The best Elton John album recorded.

A classic. 5/5

Superb lyrics and sound.

I may be biased, but this album is a masterpiece. Always has been and always will be.

Even if you took the 4 mega hits off this album it would still be 5 stars. I owned this on vinyl for years and gave it to my son when he moved out. Elton is great, this album is great. An all timer.

Love it!

Elton John and Bernie Taupin are one of the greatest singer/songwriter duos in history, and this album is one of the reasons why.

I liked this album. I grew up with it. There are some real hits on here, and I have always loved Funeral For a Friend.

Classic.

New songs to hear!

I'm going to hypocritically ignore my own personal code and give this a 5 despite it having a clunker or two. It's a mammoth double album with both huge hits and amazing deep cuts. Funeral for a Friend is the highlight because of course it is.

Classics. Even a few bumps in the road can’t stop me from loving this album.

Elton is a master and this is a masterpiece

Bangers beautiful perfect

Grandpa is fire 🔥🔥🔥

Fantastic. Soul elements and 50s influence in your sister doesn’t twist are great, love the lyrical clever and cheekiness in the song about the hooker . I’ve seen this movie too is my favourite . I appreciate the anger and the honesty in all the girls love alice- the albums rife with raw emotion and everything music should express

Favourite tracks: funeral for a friend; candle in the wind; Bennie and the jetts; goodbye yellow brick road; Jamaican jerk off; Saturday nights alright for fighting; I've seen this movie too

Today’s album is by the piano god himself (sorry Billy Joel). There are so many songs here that I already know before listening today, and yet they still give me goosebumps on each listen. After this album finished today, I immediately started playing it again which is a rarity. Elton John has a way of writing complex music, yet making it still really easy on the ears and I love it. He also blends in a nice amount of guitar and general rock sounds with the piano. I could gush for hours about this album, so let’s just leave it here!

10/10. Haunting and beautiful

Absolutely stunning album

Absolutely classic. Jamaica song feels like an odd one, though.

my initial thought when i first saw this album pop up: dorothy? the wizard of oz?? kinda falling behind on time so i won’t be able to write my opinions on every track but. this album is actually so good??? most if not all of the tracks have something interesting to them / they’re just Good, catchy songs. the upbeat songs are so FUN and the slower ones sound like instant classics. the only thing is the album feels way too long 😭 i would give it a 4.5 if i could and i still need more time to digest the entire thing but alas. it only feels right to round the number up 🤭

Almost as old as me and its back doesn’t hurt. It is doing well. Loved it.

This is a masterpiece. No skips at all

A unique blend of piano ballads and legitimate rock n roll, led by an extremely proficient front man who can write the catchiest hook imaginable. There is not shortage of fun, nor head-bobbing rhythm. The songs are laden with messages that never dull the delivery, it’s just well produced, well mastered, well written, well executed music that can be played over and over again to a very wide audience.

Some classics. Does a good job of going between high and low energy songs. It's a lot of Elton John all at once though.

One of Elton's and Bernie's best albums, full of amazing songs, many of them hits.

Elton and Bernie at their best. Not really a bad track on the album. A massive hit at the time and it really holds up well. Reading that Bernie wrote the lyrics in two and a half weeks is just incredible and Elton having most melodies in 3 days! The output back then was also crazy this was the second album for Elton in 1973 and GBYBR was a double LP. Stand out tracks: -Candle in the wind -Bennie and the jets -This song has no title -Grey seal -I've seen that movie too -The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909-1934) -Dirty Little Girl -Saturday night'a alright (for fighting) -Social Disease

I had no idea how good Elton John was. This album is phenomenal in every sense of the word.

Was excited to pull out my vinyl copy of this one. I think I mentioned in an earlier EJ review that I don't tend to love his albums, I'm more of a singles guy with this artist. This is an exception to that. I've always loved this album, and though I don't turn to it often, today's listen was a reminder of how good it is. The hits are all great, even if "Candle In The Wind" has lived one too many lives at this point, and there are a good many of them on the album. But the treat is this is rife with excellent deep cuts, there really isn't a clunker in the bag (well, maybe "Jamaican Jerk Off"). I'm all in... the arrangements are right on, the lyrics and vocals are Elton/Bernie at the top of their game — this is a highlight in EJ's catalog for sure.

Wow, it's hard to believe that this album is 50+ years old! Elton John is at the top of his game and this release contains some of his biggest hits which are also among some of the best songs of the 70's. This album factored heavily in my younger days and it was a great re-visit and still pretty fresh. (Except maybe the way overplayed Candle In The Wind, I had to skip it.)

Elton in his prime. The guitar and piano parts are just awesome. And impeccable voice

So good! Didn't realize how many of these classic Elton songs were all together on this album!

I've never given Elton John a fair shake beyond his mega-hits. Damn. Sorry.

❤️❤️

Fantastic , incredible

Fantastic

Great, surprising

Yes yes yes

Great album, lots of hit songs. I have never actually heard the whole thing, there are a lot of good songs that aren't hits. It's a great album that I will listen to again.

I've heard this one many times over the years as my parent had it on vinyl. I'm reminded of the crazy long amount of time it took us to see Elton John fir his Farewell yellow brook road tour. I bought tickets fir the show in Milwaukee in January 2018 for a February 2019 show. About 2 weeks before the show it gets postponed for "technical reasons" until Octobet 2019. Luckily it still happened and ended up being the last concert I saw before Covid shut everything down a few months later. Anyway, classic album love it!

Just beautiful... This is a great album and everything mixes so well. The lyrics can at time seem like gibberish but that is part of the appeal to me. On the surface you just want to dance around but deep down it says something

I've been a fan of the title track for awhile. This album really deepens my appreciation for Elton John's work. He's pretty genius. Love the instrumentation in all the songs. Love how he switches gears from an island diddy (Jamaica Jerk Off) to a fun surf'n usa rock and sock hop vibe (Your Sister Cant Twist but She Can Rock N Roll). Awesome song. Grey Seal has great energy. Dirty Little Girl (damn). Okay. I'm a fan. Hope to hear more Elton John Albums!

Elton John is a treasure. His 70’s records are among the best made by anybody that decade. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a beast with some of his biggest hits, but also some of his better deep cuts such as Sweet Painted Lady and Dirty Little Girl. For more Elton greatness, I’d recommend Madman Across The Water, Blue Moves, Honky Chateau, and Tumbleweed Connection. What a gift of a musician!!

Listening to Elton John it always feels so odd that he didn't write his own lyrics; the songs feel so cohesive. There's no question many songs on this album are iconic and Elton's musical ability and showmanship are unmatched in his style. This hits all the marks it tries to and sounds natural to do so. The intro song's instrumentals really start off bold and strong. There's some chaff that should've been cut here but there's too much gold to be weighed down by Jamaica Jerk off.

This is not perfect, but it sets a high bar for it's self. Almost a greatest hits album, some trash and one embarrassment. Bernie Taupin and Elton John are masters at creating songs. Despite it's blemishes, I'm compelled to give it a 5

Just under a 5 (I'm looking at you Jamaica Jerk-off and Roy Rogers) but then probably could have been a single album. Lots of really special songs and arrangements here. In general, I am a causal Elton John fan but this is definitely one of the greatest albums

I’d never listened to this album before and I was pleasantly surprised that I knew quite a few of the songs. Lots of bangers for sure.

5 Stars!! Absolutely a legend!!

4 all time songs in "Candle In The Wind", "Benny And The Jets", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" amd, frankly, I've given other album 5 stars for much, much less...

Love him.

So many bangers, just a great album. First few tracks are the best.

His best work

GB yellow brick road has had a chokehold on me ever since I saw the Rocketman movie on my way back from Taiwan last year. Adore that song. I really appreciate Elton now. This album just has so many bangers it's hard to give it anything less than 5*. I knew the hits would be highlights for me, but I also really enjoyed many other tracks. Even Jamaica jerk-off, if you forget for a sec that this is Elton John, is a really enjoyable song. Album dips a little in the middle, and I didn't love the country-ish tracks (roy rogers and social disease). Highlights: goodbye yellow brick road, candle in the wind, bennie and the jets, funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding, saturday night's alright for fighting, grey seal

Wonderful

absolute brilliance.

When people use the term "magnum opus", this is what their frame of reference should be. A sprawling collection of songs both glamorous and tragic from one of the greatest performers of our lifetime (and his equally talented songwriting partner). Magnificent.

Album 422 of 1001 Elton John -Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Rating : 5 / 5 I could easily go a point lower in my rating but I'll consider the album itself as well the legendary status it has attained over time and that it is perhaps the greatest of Elton's albums. I am one who thinks it could have been done in a single album but I'll take all it gives me. Side 1 is one of the most enjoyable album sides I've ran across. I don't feel the rest of the album holds up to Side 1 but I enjoyed listening again and do have a better appreciation for the lesser known tracks.

Surprised this is only the 2nd Elton John album here considering some artists have 5-6. Anyway this is him at his height with some super powerful but still sad songs. love this album

Usually an artist I listen to greatest hits of. Also has always been in later career in my memory and a bit of a caricature of an artist for me. I loved hearing a full album when he would have been at the height of a serious artist.

OMG! How did I not ever listen to this properly? All the big hits like Candle in the Wind, Bennie and The Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Friday Night's Alright for Fighting are so familiar they're almost background music. But the deep cuts surprise – including Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding and The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909–1934). Jamaica Jerk Off hasn't aged well. But this is a masterpiece – amazing to think so many tracks, and such a journey!

Have on vinyl - a fun record which is long but varied enough that it doesn't overstay its welcome. Peak glam

I love this album, have it on vinyl and CD. I stopped listening to it because some of the songs on it got overplayed on the radio, to the point that I don't want to spend anymore time of my life listening to music and hearing these songs again. But hey, now that I stream everything it's easy to say "Hey alexa/google/siri next song."

Beltin Elton knows how to write and sing great songs. I understand why people won’t like this due to the length but the storytelling is pretty good. I might listen to this again. Just remember Beltin Elton

A lifelong “old friend” album. So much here.

This album was sick. Having never really listened to Elton John beyond Rocket Man, I knew he made pop/rock music, but this had so much musicality it was insane. My favorite by was I've Seen That Movie Too, but there were several that stood out between This Song Has No Title, Grey Seal, Sweet Painted Lady, etc. Cool album that really just is plain fun to listen to.

Ahhh Sir Elton, most would say this was his peak. Overall an excellent album that has some very strong and very well know songs. Though it's not my favorite, it's a bit long and few songs are really just ok. Still a no brainer 5 star.

One of, if not my, favorite Elton John albums. The collaboration between John and Taupin is just wonderful, the lyrics are fun and interesting, and the piano is great. Terrific album and one of the few double albums so far that I haven't thought was too long.

Some HOF tracks on this one. If you have any interest in Elton, this is a good a place as any to start.

This is one of the rare albums that is phenomenal throughout (I can ignore Jamaica Jerk-Off based on the strength of the rest of the side). That is quite the feat for a double album. "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" is about as good as it gets for an intro track. Elton John's full range is showcased, both in terms of vocals and songwriting, with great lyrics by Bernie Taupin. This is a great album.

Before giving it a listen today I knew it was between a 4 and a 5. Spent the whole day listening to it, had a great time, our Elton gets a 5.

A classic in every way!!
