Reviews (page 4 of 10)

One of the best records of the 90s, in any genre. Yes it's a bit too long and could stand to lose 2 or 3 tracks - but as a whole it's a certified 100% banger

Definitely pretty incredible how they can make relatively long and repetitive songs not get boring or agitating.

90s electronica that’s considered classic by aficionados. Unlikely to convert non edm listeners.

I like daft punk. I like this but it did get a bit loooong.

Wow, this sounds good. So clear. So sharp. I loved Kraftwerk and Visage - this reminds me of them. I want to go clubbing! Haha. No idea if it flows as an album, but who cares? I am dancing (and driving) to this every day ... around the world, around the world. Fave track: Revoloution 909 - how it moves. This is coooooool 😎

Big fan of Random Access Memories and various singles but never listened to Homework the whole way through. I was pleasantly surprised by how house this album is. It’s quite barebones compared to a lot of modern house but that doesn’t stop it being an absolute groove. Can see how this is so influential for the house & electronic genres. Majority of tracks are excellent as standalone songs. A couple of tracks felt as though they were designed to be woven into a DJ mix and not listened to necessarily the whole way through or as part of an album… I’m very torn about marking them down for that. It’s music engineered for the dance floor - the ‘album’ is secondary. In this project I am judging each record as an album. As a collection of influential house tracks to get the party bouncing, this is 5 stars. As a cohesive album, this is 4 stars. Favourite tracks: Daftendirekt, Revolution 909, Da Funk, Phoenix, Indo Silver Club, Alive

Da Funk and Around the World are all-timers, but I found some of the tracks less accessible (maybe I needed to be at a dance party to really get in the mood).

Not my favorite Daft Punk album but a solid one nonetheless.

Aroundtheworldaroundtheworldaroundthenworldaroundthewoooooorld

Strange choice over discovery in my opinion but amazing all the same. Still sounds completely fresh 4.5*

Love the rock element very good, funky electronic

Very fun. It's no Discovery, but come on, what is.

Great album and maybe their worst?

En tant que français de 20 ans, c'est drôle de voir l'influence de cet album sur ce qu'on écoute dans nos raves maintenant

This album fucking RIPS. Next time I need to clean the house, this will be the soundtrack. I remember “around the world” coming out when I was in 7th grade. It hypnotized me then and even had my black friends singing it in class. No idea where I never bought the album. I clearly should have. Playlist pick: rollin’ and scratchin’

Is it repetitive? Well yea, that’s kinda what this genre is but these two do it pretty well. I listened to half on a run and half on a dog walk. This album isn’t for any occasion, that’s for sure. I absolutely preferred my listen during the run. The album could be trimmed down but overall it’s a strong release of techno-electronic. 3.5 stars

Goated house album

Solid dance music, some experimental textures and wild runs make it an important listen.

crazy production🔥

Such a fun album.

Great album but not every song is a banger.

C’est FantastiQUE. C’est Techno!!

I found it a great album, and a dismal one. So much repetition. But some interesting variation within them. I found myself tapping along to most. Almost dancing sometimes. I struggled with the meaning of phrases, I just enjoyed the album. Suprisingly. I found no depths of understanding, no illumination of the human condition, just fun, interest and expressiveness. 4 stars. Should be three just I enjoy it too much.

It's funny to see many of the featured reviews complain about repetition on a TECHNO/HOUSE album. Something, something, "Around the World", I get it, but these genres are predicated on rhythm and repetition and were really made for the dance/club/DJ scene. As for "Homework" itself, pretty good for a debut album, eh? Daft Punk (literally) just threw together a bunch of singles and made it their first album. The "proper" singles are crafted well thanks to Daft Punk's funk and disco influences. The album as a whole does run a bit long, though, which is noticeable in some of the 7-minute tracks. Slight aside, but it's disappointing that Daft Punk's massive second album "Discovery" doesn't appear on this list at all (I took a peek out of curiosity). I honestly feel that it is more structured and is a more fun listening experience. That would've been my pick if only one Daft Punk album had to be represented here, but I understand why "Homework" was included and recognize the influence it had on the house scene at the time

Liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

Great album.

You Know, I never really considered myself a fan of Daft Punk, but now I think I get it. There is such a vast array of influences snd styles in this album. Repetition comes with the genre and is to be expected so that doesn't bother me. Plus they usually change it up in slight but interesting ways to keep you engaged. The only problem I had with the album was some of the intros were a bit long.

It's good, but still to me maybe the weakest of the Daft Punk original trilogy. I think the other two are more listenable, and this one sort of makes me wish a lot of these songs were the Alive 2007 versions that feature those tracks instead. I think the composition is more towards club track / DJ tool vs. listenable song here.

Paar echte topnummers, maar ook veel matige. Invloedrijk, voor de mainstream.

This one was quite interesting not really my piece of cake but still it was really fun listening to this album

original techno electronic. pioneering. mixed bag whether it is good

Great. Powerful dance. 4/5

Let's go raving

Some songs were a bit long and tedious, but overall, really good!

I've listened to this Daft Punk album the least out of all them, but it's really quite good. You can see how influenced they were from acts like Kraftwerk. There's some really good tracks on here (Da Funk, Around The World). For me this doesn't rise to the level of Discovery or RAM, but it's still solid.

Nothing like the feeling of being in a French 90s club but while totally sober and building lego. Decent and I can understand it being influential but the experience would probably be much better on drugs

Daft Punk knows their style and does it arguably better than anyone. Great album, with Around the World as the standout track.

Great album though there are a couple of fillers as well as the obvious killers

très bons messieurs Bangalter and de Homem-Christo

Repetitive? Yes. Did it need take up an entire CD runtime? No. Worth it? Absolutely.

This is an absolutely iconic album, but it's one I rarely listen to due to it's repetitive and lengthy nature. I remember when I was a teenager, not long after I started listening to Daft Punk (and having my mind opened to electronic music in general - after years of classic rock only), one of my friends loaned me "Alive 2007". He told me that once I'd heard Daft Punk live, I'd never want to listen to their studio albums again. It was very true - almost everything here sounds better on Alive 1997 and 2007. It's incredible to hear these songs woven together and remixed in inventive new ways, but it has the unintended effect of making the studio albums feel a bit...stripped back? Tame? Boring? Maybe part of the problem is that I'm sitting alone at a desk in my home office, listening via headphones, not on a house party or niteclub sound system. Not exactly what Daft Punk had in mind, I'd say. There are of course a few songs that do stand well alone (Revolution 909, Da Funk, Around The World, Rollin and Scratchin, Burnin, Indo Silver Club, Alive), and there's no denying how influential and groundbreaking the duo were. But the majority of these songs just sound like fragments to me now, parts of a greater whole to be assembled. It makes me sad that I missed out on seeing them live, and will probably never have a chance to again. Still though, I'll always have the Alive albums. I'm assuming they aren't in this book though, so in their stead I'll be giving this a 4, and most likely a 5 to Discovery.

Inventive, just a little on the long side

Altijd goed

Tracks range from "iconic" to "annoying" - these boys need an editor

Was a blast to listen to this complete. To me, Daft Punk has earned their spot in history. I think the fun twists in the music elevate them above just house.

Great album. Some lesser-known tracks that I didn't enjoy as much as the main radio hits.

Some good jams. Original Daft Punk with their signature sound.

Finally an album I was excited to listen to. Enjoyable and some definite all-time hits on here. However, some of the other tracks fall a bit flat and get repetitive. I'm sure it'd be amazing live or at a club, but for just listening at home it doesn't translate very well. Still an above average album though. 7/10 (3.5/5)

Lmao probably one of the most influential house albums ever, though not my personal favorite from them it’s pretty damn good. 3.9

Around the World.

This album really makes you feel like you're going around the world.

Sometimes I think it's brilliant and other times it's monotonous. Overall, even though EDM isn't my bag, I dig it. Might need to get a bit pear shaped and give it another listen.

Enkel bangers

4/5. Quintessential house music. Despite mostly repetitive background sounds, it somehow never gets old and can still be enjoyed with an attentive ear without being annoying. The thing that makes Daft Punk not annoying is that every four bars there is always a new instrumentation or slight change that keeps you invested. The only downside really is the length of the album. I enjoy the long songs but it feels like there is some filler here that could be trimmed down. Otherwise, a necessary listen for any lover of electronic music.

I first listened to this in a car ride home on car speakers while talking with my wife and it didn't really sound great to me. I then got home and tried again with headphones and it really worked well. The sounds are inventive yet familiar. It feels like it's always leading you to its next section that hits nicely when you actaully get there. I still don't love electronic music as a genre, but this was the best this playlist has given me. I also liked the "Homework" lore behind it as the two Daft Punk artists wrote this in their own home studio. Crazy that this is the group to put out Random Access Memory, as their sound will grow a ton over the next 15 years. My vacorites were Da Funk, Around the World, Rock'n'Roll, and Burnin'.

automatic 4 stars because it’s daft punk but agree that discovery is the elite album. if i’m in a daft punk mood and wanna hear any of these songs I’ll just go with the live 2007 album versions instead 🤷🏻‍♀️

Only listened to some of it. Loved what I heard. Around the world is such a banger

My favorite Daft Punk album is Random Access Memories but Homework is pretty great. Around the World and Da Funk are highlights.

I love Daft Punk, this album is intense in the use of electronic elements, which I sometimes struggle to listen to. It's kind of cathartic though, sometimes. Da Funk is a song I've listened to for a while, I love it. Some of the songs' structures are really interesting.

Very repetitive but was a good jam for a Friday at work

I don’t know why but this album is very comforting to me. I don’t have a lot of experience with French house music but this hit the spot.

Not as good as Discovery but still a classic house album

not my fav daft punk but they got da funk lol. I like the transition sounds of waves crashing i feel like in in ibitha :p a little repetitive but these r the kinds of sounds i DO like lol :D Around the world around the world around the WOOOORld

No much into house music but this is pretty good

Infectious beats that stick with you. Must be listened to with a proper speaker or headphones. Not every track is a banger but it's clear why they were so popular in their heyday.

90s Rave music :)

Very good 👍

a bit too much daft and not enough punk in all seriousness, though, I would rate it 3.75 – but I might just round it up. normally I reserve the 4 star rating for albums that I will intentionally listen to again (at least in part) and this might not be one of them. nevertheless, it was a really enjoyable listening experience. the album is full of cool sounds and is a very solid first output. people who complain about the repetitiveness would be the same people demanding "songs with lyrics" at a techno club

Long hypnotic tracks. I like most of it but some of the sound designy tracks are too out there for me

French homework just hits different. Daft Punk can evoke such unique emotions, wish those two little robots were still together.

I definitely prefer this album to their later stuff - less commercial/pop

It’s good yeah actually a better listen than I thought honestly but not something made for me 4/5

Not the biggest dance fan but enjoyed this. Will listen more

Beep boop robot music but this time actually good

It'd make for a really good night dancing through it all. Alive, Fresh were my favorite new discoveries on it.

Hard to believe that they were around in the late ‘90’s. Fun album w/a couple songs I’ll probably download

Around the World.

Can't go wrong

Maybe not their best album but still pretty good.

It's not perfect album. There are better Daft Punk music out there, but this album was much needed. You can already here the early brilliance and genius of these guys. Homework had to become before the rest. And the rest is history. 4.5/5.

It's so easy to identify good techno / EDM / dance music just by hearing bad techno. This is good because it isn't bad. Daft Punk and electronic music aren't my lane of enjoyment, but I listened to this whole thing. And enjoyed it. 4/5.

Wenn's passt

Not super familiar with this genre so I'm not gonna have anything super intellectual to say about this album, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would LOVE to party to this but it was also perfect for deep cleaning my apartment. Honestly makes me want to get more into EDM.

Mycket mycket bra

7/10 I've always liked Discovery more

I was gonna rate this 5 stars but the later tracks really don't hold up as well, will round 3.5 up though

I really enjoyed this although I wouldn't call it earth shattering. Maybe it was innovative to the pop crowd of 97 but it does feel a bit generic now.

Great album for going out I think, time and place for sure. I think it could also be class to run to. Overall enjoyed.

It actually sounds very good I’m just not one to listen to a repetitive beat for more than 2 minutes without any change 😭 but still I did expect it to be good bc daft punk

fave track: revolution 909 final thoughts: cunty af

this was such a cool listen. i liked the electronicy feel present throughout the album, especially whenever vocals were utilised on tracks like around the world. only major problem is the run time, when you have songs that rely heavily on loops and have them go on for 7 minutes, you start to go a little insane. and it's not like this problem was present on one track, it was quite a few, accumulating in a 74 minute runtime, not the best feeling tbh.

I had really high hopes for this album so was a little bit dissapointed. It was still good though but my main issue was that it was a bit long. It was however the perfect album to listen to while working from home on a Friday (homework, get it?). It has some great hits and many of the songs hit just right being above monotonic noise and actually being good. Alive and Rock'n'Roll were my favourite songs I hadn't listened to much before. It's main negatives was that it was too long and it didn't feel coherent. A weak 4.

Cool dance party album

Love this album but too long

whatever man everyone knows this album, it rips but who cares

8/10, very fun and good workout music

Pretty fun album. Da Funk and Indo Silver club were bangers.

I enjoyed the first half of the album more. Overall, great experience, I felt like I really was doing homework (hehe) for the later Daft Punk albums by listening to this one :)

iconic

Has the potential to be repetitive and become tiresome, but it manages to leave a lasting impression, and perhaps the pros outweigh the cons. Big Yuzo Koshiro vibes.

A very fun, upbeat electronic dance album. Will definitely have on for backyard games!! A very fun vibe!

Brings back some memories from my high school years

Great album. I love dance music. Some bangers in here. The first 2 thirds are better than the last third. This album is an excellent choice to put on when performing long physical tasks

So this was a great discovery sitting in my office yesterday. I felt like that if I was in a club with a hot girl, I could actually dance to this music, and dance well. Thats obviously unrealistic, but the music transported me there. Great beats and sound...ultimate headphone experience. Solid album top to bottom. Probably only one song I felt like was "filler". Was shocked after reading they almost didn't release this as an album. Would have been a five star if Up all night to get lucky was on here.

Quality old school electronic tunes

Was a lot of fun. Enjoyed the track ‘Fresh’; it got me super hyped up for the day. Great sounds, was probably an important release for its time

Loved this one, was dancing around the flat like an antibody under the microscope gelling around for bacteria to munch. Have seen some footage of D-Punk back in the day mixing records and stuff and can hear in the album all the stuff they must have sampled and put together.

Good beats. Would be nice music to get in the mood before going out. Fav songs revolution 909, phoenix, fresh, high Fidelity, alive

01) Daftendirekt - 8,5 02) WDPK 83.7 FM - 6,0 03) Revolution 909 - 10,0 04) Da Funk - 10,0 05) Phoenix - 8,5 06) Fresh - 8,5 07) Around the World - 10,0 08) Rollin' & Scratchin' - 8,5 09) Teachers - 8,5 10) High Fidelity - 8,5 11) Rock'n Roll - 7,0 12) Oh Yeah - 7,5 13) Burnin' - 9,0 14) Indo Silver Club - 8,5 15) Alive - 8,5 16) Funk Ad - 7,5 TOTAL: 8,44 (84/100) Ah, mon Dieu, finally something from when I was young :-P I loved french house/electronica acts of the late 90s and early 00s like Air, Daft Punk, Cassius, Modjo, The Supermen Lovers, Stardust, Bob Sinclar, Martin Solveig... and then David Guetta came and ruined it all :-/

Surprised that I liked it

It's great, but it isn't perfect. This made waves, but not nearly as much as their next few records. This just feels like the precursor to Discovery, which I think is just a better-made album. All the same, Homework really shows that Daft Punk did their Homework when making this and made something really special. Favorites are Daftendirekt, Da Funk, Around The World, and Rock'n Roll

90s foundational electronic. So cool

Tolles Album.

no standout moments but the hype is well deserved

Great debut. Not as good as “Random Access Memories” though.

I remember in 1997 I was watching 12 Angry Viewers on MTV, waiting for a new Reel Big Fish video. But instead they played around the world by daft punk, and as I was upset because neither missed RBF or whatever, I was semi interested in what daft punk was doing because of the helmets. But didn’t appreciate it until later in my musical life.

LEGENDARY

Great repetitive electronica! Aaaaalmost 5.

Daft Punk’s first album sets the tone for what was to come, through infectious loops, layered production, and the hypnotic, distinct robot vocals

Classic late 90's techno. Some great songs here, but knocking off one star due to the trend of the era to add some annoyingly screechy sounds to various tracks. Still a good listen overall.

Enjoyable electronic music. Not always the most interesting but good for putting my head down and focusing on some work

Love Daft Punk but a few of those were a bit too much for me. Still the bangers were worth 4 stars

Its so well produced but I find so many songs slightly repetitive. Nearly 5/5

I love me some daft punk, but this ain't no Interstellar 5555/Discovery. It's going to get a reluctant 4.

Classic Daft Punk, some of these aren't personal favs but it's still a great album

Back half did start to drag when listening front to back but there are some certified bangers bc its daft fcking punk. 3.5

good busywork music, I definitely think I will put this on as a background album in the future

album legal dá p deixar de fundo

The later remixes I think are better but an ok listen.

Great sound for a party. A lot of the songs are about a minute too long

Obviously some great tracks on here, but they aren't all winners.

Great house album that could use a little bit of editing. A few songs too long but a lot of iconic 90s house from this album. Repeats:da funk, around the world, rollin&scratchin, alive Skips: teachers, High fidelity

Went on for a bit longer than it needed to, both individual songs and album as a whole. Liked it a lot but it could have done with some trimming, imo.

It's pretty good

Groovy

love daft punk sm. this isnt their best project but man these guys are the ALL TIME!

I love Daft Punk. However, this is their worst album in my opinion. It’s both far too long and very repetitive. So many of these songs could have been cut in half. I’m going to be very disappointed if this is their only album on here. But even still, it’s not a bad album. Plenty of great tracks. It’s just hard to listen to 6-7 minutes of the same couple seconds practically on loop. It’s my least favourite Daft Punk album, but it’s still Daft Punk at the end of the day. 8/10 Top 3: 1. Teachers 2. Da Funk 3. Around the World

Pretty solid not as good as the rest of there stuff and some things take a while to build

Funky jams

Around the world around the world around the world around the world Doesnt reach discovery levels for me but a jam all the way through

A bit more disconnected than other albums. But could listen all day. 4/5

Daft punk before they were robots. Feels rough around the edges but the skeleton of what made Discovery and Daft Punk so iconic is there. 7.5/10

This is not Daft Punk at their most refined or focused. In fact, many of the songs have moments where you think "what am I listening to?". And yet, these songs have a power to keep you interested and entertained. While Homework isn't Daft Punk's best, the album clearly shows the potential the duo had to create catchy and popular dance music. Best Songs: Revolution 909, Da Funk, Around the World, Burnin', Alive Worst Songs: Phoenix, High Fidelity,

Perfect as ambient for work.

Ist in die Jahre gekommen

Love the slow intro First 3 songs don't entirely sound like daft punk but still great. Da Funk is such a banger on god

I went back to this 2-3 years back for album club and listened to the whole thing several times over. It was actually not as good as I'd been expecting, and oh god, so long. Totally understand why this is the daft punk album in the book although Discovery is probably better. There's a lot of space in the tracks which is stripped out as their sound developed. That can be both a positive and a negative, as you can lose yourself in the beats (which is kind of what this album is for) but obviously makes it way long. Rollin' and scratchin', rock'n roll, burnin' are all variations on eachother. The apostrophe trio. Still, lots of bangers. And what it is great for is sticking on in the background while I build reports.

Great background music.

Around the world👍

Love daft punk

A classic EDM album, song great songs on here to introduce people to the genre. If you haven't yet go watch some of their music videos, they are a ton of fun.

Know it, love it

Love some Daft Punk but this one is pretty repetitive. I know that's their thing; it's to linger on sections so you can dance to them. But usually their songs have more memorable moments for me to hang onto, and this album didn't have enough of them. In fact, I really only got that at "Around the World", which is a great song! But unfortunately this not only comes in so late in the album (after around 22 minutes), but it's also TOO repetitive. I want to say that these are things that I would usually gripe about and it would then reflect in my rating, but I know that this is their first full-length so this is their not-fully-evolved sound, and it's STILL great. So to me, it's a 4. There's times where I think that this album is just OK because they just kind of do their thing in a dynamics-less world and sometimes they land on gold, like the melody of "Around the World". But I think that would be me not seeing the forests for the trees.

Fun to dance to, good working grooves. Simple, kind of brutal in a way.

Fun, classic electronic. A bit dated and long but still holds up

80/100

Great beats, first half absolutely rocks, starts to get a bit dull towards the end

Damn good album. Goes harder than I thought of Daft Punk at many points. Really impressed with a record that can have a dirty thumpin bass drum throughout and not get old. Impressively sequenced and an absolute trailblazer. Four and a half. Fave track: Rollin' & Scratchin'

Such a solid album here - you enter a kind of fugue state at times listening to this, there’s such a strong identity and presence in these tracks that you can’t help but move your body to. Sounds so good through the right speakers, too. Four and a half. Fave track: Phoenix

Good album, but not Daft Punk's peak.

My biggest regret in life may be never having the blessing of seeing Daft Punk live. I have had a deep infatuation with this duo and their undeniable genius for a long time now. Discovery is one of the finest pieces of music I have ever heard. But I think you would find plenty of fans of Daft Punk who have never heard Homework before. I had only listened to the first handful of tracks before today, but I always had the intention of going back. I find that Discovery focuses on the beauty of adolescent curiosity and growing up. Homework, on the other hand, is the older and more mature brother to Discovery. The sound of this album is darker and more heavy, which fits the clubbing scene much better than their sophomore album. Not that it can't be played in a live setting, but you are more likely to hear "Revolution 909" in the club than "Superheroes". And I think the album both benefits from this sound and falls short due to it. Because on one hand, the music has everything that makes Daft Punk so enjoyable to listen to. The way they layered and built their sounds was genius, and it often meant that the best part of a Daft Punk song was the end, when the puzzle pieces all came together to reveal the whole picture. Just watch the music video for "Around the World" and you will see what I am talking about. But on the other end, the textures and sounds here are just not nearly as refined. It feels as if they really sanded off a lot of the more aggressive instrumentals, and I'm glad they went with that move. Because songs like "Rollin' & Scratchin'" and "Rock'n Roll" are often subject to criticism, understandably. They are just very abrasive and hard on the listener. Maybe in a dark club setting like that of the opening scene in Wesley Snipe's Blade movie would these beats fit, but to the average person, they just aren't that pleasant. I actually enjoy the former track, but "Rock'n Roll" not so much. Some other highlights are "Revolution 909" and "Alive", which are honestly beautiful, and give me this warm nostalgic feeling. "Around the World" is instantly recognizable, and while maybe the most repetitive song on the whole record, it will hit every time I hear it come on. I love Daft Punk. That will never change. I use their music as a gauge. If you enjoy Daft Punk, we will probably get along and be friends. If not, maybe don't talk to me, Because how can you not love them? The simplicity of their music makes it so easily accessible, and yet they have some of the most deeply studied production and instrumentation of any group ever. Their music truthfully has not aged a day, and still sounds as pristine as it did the year it came out. Homework is no exception to that. It isn't the absolute masterpiece that Discovery or even RAM may be regarded as, but it is still a worthwhile debut that proves Daft Punk had it from the very beginning.

These guys are the GOATS and had a huge impact on electronic music for years. I could already hear the impact they had on people RATATA and Fat Boy Slim. This is just a collection of really repetitive, but good songs. An easy 4/5

Old school daft punk. Not the best, but definitely some bangers on here. Still greatly prefer the Alive live album with some of these songs mashed up with others, but still an over all good--though somewhat repetitive--album. 4/5

I know it

Perfect music to have in the background while doing homework. Steady beat with good pace that is interesting, but you don’t have to listen closely to

Not one's cup of tea typically, but these tracks get full-on mesmerizing now and again, to such an extent, one wishes they were longer. And credit must be given for the fact that this content (doesn't feel quite right to call it "songs" or "tunes" or even "music") repeatedly causes one to start moving like one likes dancing, which one does not. "Around the World" is totally earworm-y, but perhaps not in the most winning sense. Second half of record bangs less, one would say, as it gets a little drone-y and much less dynamic.

Great to listen to, but only in certain contexts! It's not an album that requires deep contemplative listening, but I'd love to hear this at a club.

OVERRATED AS FUCK ngl kinda like this but still nvm this is a good album

Pas mon pref de Daft Punk mais, du coup, moins écouté que les autres. Reste très bien, un peu plus brut de décoffrage que les suivants. Agréable d'avoir l'occasion de le réécouter ici.

Tbh this went way harder than I expected and probably harder than anything I’ve heard on this list (for electronic music). Not much to say from me except for lots of really cool beats that helped me pass the time on an 11-hour flight. 7/10

This is a love it or hate it album. House music is all about a consistent 4-on-the-floor beat and repeating melody that may or may not go through progressive changes. If this gets on your nerves, avoid Homework (and Human After All) like the plague. I was introduced to Daft Punk through their music video for "Around the World", and while I didn't run out the door to buy this album, it did end up in collection prior to the release of Discovery (which I pre-ordered). For me, this is a fun album to groove to while driving or working. Not their best album (or second best), but the foundation for those albums is laid out. 3.5 stars, which I generously round up to 4.

Tough to put on and listen to all the way through

It’s a good album. Got to be in the right time and place.

Love ittttttttt

What an incredible debut album, sexy bit of French house. Super fresh and experimental, so creative with the name of Homework when they did it at home with their own resources and minds. I love how organic the creation of this album was and it's such a heart warming story of artist evolution. Not exactly perfect listening for working IMO, particularly the more abstract tracks like Burnin' but super fun to listen to the classics, what a load of bangerz!

It's good stuff. Got some bangers on it. Daft Punk are great but I think we get bombarded with the hits a lot and obviously they've done so much more than that

some classics on here. This album was endlessly sampled. It gets a bit boring in the later half just listening to it on its own.

listened to this before expected this to be better, however discovery and random access memories are just sooooooooo much better and i think this album sounds more just like beats they need vocals. Still a good album tho

Own on Vinyl

Disappointed: I love Daft Punk and would do devious things to go to an alive concert but this just disappointed me. I could’ve left my computer half way through a song and gone to the loo to come back at the exact same segment, just got a bit repetitive. One of my favourite bands ever and probably their weakest record I’ve listened too.

Few hits, like 'around the world'. otherwise consistent, electronic-y music. Liked it but i wouldn't say 'omg i love it all the songs are great'

Listened to 30 mim of the album. Good being busy music, i like it👍

Just doing my homework

Not really punk, but definitely quite daft

Крепкое, но чересчур длинное. Это очень классная работа, которая открывает портал в ушедшие 70е. И то, как это было переработано... не без батиной помощи, конечно.

как будто есть предъява по лишним композициям, но список композиций субъективен

as good as you would think

I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids. Everybody said I was crazy…we all know. This album is wildly impressive for a first time out. Even more so when you consider it’s almost 30 years old. I would argue this album helped solidify electronic music’s place in the mainstream. From here on you saw an explosion of great electronica leading into the 2000s. This isn’t Daft Punk’s best, but it’s super solid and never fails to get me inspired in my own experimentation with music. But boy oh boy if you would’ve put this on for me when I was a teenager, I probably would’ve left the room. This was the antithesis of everything I loved.

A dazzlingly well-formed, supremely danceable debut from a duo that only got better with time.

Not the Daft Punk album I would personally choose to go on this list but still very good. I shall listen to it again. ...but it was too long. Of course it's repetitive -- it's electronic dance music, that's the point -- yet some of the songs towards the end are a lot weaker than the first two-thirds. They take forever to finish and don't sound nearly as good (possibly because my brain was so tired by the end). I could tell you which ones, due to the (admittedly well-done) segues. It was a chore to sit through all of it. Heard before: 'Da Funk', 'Around the World', 'Burnin'' 7/10. Nevertheless, it could grow on me.

very good, i prefer it over discovery

Fuck me this is not Discovery. But too industrial for me but you gotta respect the range of these blokes.

Listened to this on the bus home, funky fun loved it

Although this is already 26 years old - it sounds like it was released yesterday - stylish - timeless, grooving. A little long, typical of a 90s album, but it's a tight set of tracks. Had a great time listening to it.

A really interesting beginning

More of a Discovery guy myself

A classic. This brings me back to grade 8, hanging out in Coal Harbour and getting into things we shouldn’t hahaha. Of course the known songs like Around the World and Da Funk are crowd pleasers (and remind me of MuchMusic dances!), but so many other songs get me excited! I am taking away one star only due to a few tracks that are way to beat repetitive for me. I need it to progress into new sounds or melody, not just tick tick tick for minutes on end. Great album though! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Best Song: Revolution 909

Heh. Robots.

Perfect album to test out my new subwoofer. Exemplary of the French house movement, it's danceable and simple yet rich in structure much like IDM that came before it. Most of the album sounds like distant club music playing downstairs. Has a very alien-sound that's both funky and groovy, especially due to its deep bass and unique style where it suddenly gets quiet and loud again. Lots of highlights here. You have the hits "Da Funk" and "Around the World", but so many tracks have something strange about them that you just have to wonder where they're going with this. Examples includes the industrial abrasiveness of "Rollin & Scratchin" and "Rock'n Roll" or the samplepaedic nature of "High Fidelity" and "Oh Yeah". The sounds are atmospheric and justify their lengths, with many tracks like "Alive" sounding very much like Aphex Twin. I was a huge fan of nearly every track. This is their most ambient album which has its merits, but it's crazy to see where they'll go with Discovery and RAM in making it catchier and more coherent.

The debut album by French electronic music duo Daft Punk, is a groundbreaking album that redefined the landscape of dance music in the late 1990s. Released in 1997, Homework is an essential record in the canon of electronic dance music, as it encapsulates the raw energy, experimentalism, and playful spirit of the genre's formative years. One of the standout tracks on Homework is "Around the World," a catchy and hypnotic anthem that features a repetitive vocal hook that is impossible to get out of your head. The track's mesmerizing bassline, robotic synth melodies, and playful use of samples create a fun and dynamic atmosphere that is emblematic of Daft Punk's style. Another highlight is "Da Funk," a gritty and funky track that features a distorted guitar riff, a driving beat, and a catchy melody that builds to an explosive climax. Throughout the album, Daft Punk displays a command of different electronic music genres, from the acid house of "Rollin' & Scratchin'" to the ambient textures of "Nightvision" to the Detroit techno influences of "Alive." Yet, despite the varied styles and sounds on display, Homework remains a cohesive and consistent record that flows well from beginning to end. Daft Punk's innovative production techniques, infectious rhythms, and playful approach to music-making shine on this album, making it a very fun listen.

I love daft punk. but I'm guessing many people are gonna hate this album on the first listen. It's very repetitive and gritty, and sounds nothing like the poppy Discovery. I honestly don't know how this became mainstream. I only got into this after getting into more chicago house and techno music. Definitely a grower.

Landmark dance album

This album is really cool a lot of the time, and is justifiably considered a landmark techno album. There are a lot of great songs on here, but there are also some songs (Rollin' and Scratchin' and Rock'n Roll, for example) that are really repetitive without much going on. The feel like filler, which is too bad because the album is otherwise pretty stellar 4/5, but a lower 4 than I would have anticipated

Of all of the Houses, French House is my favourite. Despite not being an avid listener of electronic music, I really enjoy Daft Punk. Repetitiveness is almost inevitable in EDM due to the buildup and layering that defines the genre, but there are ways to be "doin' it right" 😉. Pretty essential album, and provided inspiration for loads of other albums, artists, and musical groups "around the world". If I'm going to listen to house music, it is very likely going to be Daft Punk. Kudos to them for helping me like electronic & house music to some degree. Fave tracks: Da Funk, Around the World, Alive

Daft Punk always sounds so good they really do have something special it’s just…… 74 minutes…. It’s so much Daft Punk……

Daft punk bump

good electronic sound. I liked it.

listened to again it really does hold up

Not Daft Punk's best album imo, however, still a classic listen and their use of lyrics as a tool for the music is always something super interesting to me.

I'm a big fan of Daft Punk and recall being really excited when I first heard Da Funk back in the 90s, with the bizarre music video adding to the mystique of the sound. This album has a few standouts but definitely has the rawness that debuts often do, and that is just what holds this back from being a solid 5 stars for me

Quite good! Very great atmosphere for dance music. Quite easy listening too. Not much of a dance music person. Daft punk hits a little different.

Super album! A great blend of techno and house that was ahead of its time when released. Some of the tracks sound brand new today.

A few great songs on this. They definitely refined their sound on their following albums.

Slightly repetitive but oh so fun. I really love some of these songs!

Sure these songs should be shorter, but they’re so damn enjoyable I can’t complain, the deep bass and beat of Detroit techno slowed down to give house music funk and pulse. As minimal and repetitive as punk, but definitely not daft.

A historical record for the "French Touch", and for electronic music in general. Less flashy and impressive than their subsequent album, "Discovery", but probably more endearing and/or fascinating. Four stars. Number of albums left to review: 658 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 170 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 82 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 96

I love some of these songs SO MUCH.But most of it is complete filler

Sometimes it's the right place and right time that heighten listening experience. This is reverse though.

"Homework" is the debut album from the French electronic music duo Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo). It is credited with giving French house music world wide attention and it became a huge commercial success in the ensuing years. The duo began by presenting a demo to DJ Stuart MacMillan at a EuroDisney rave in 1993. Their singles increased in popularity. The songs on this album were originally considered to be released as separate singles until they had more than enough material for an album. In 1996, they were signed to Virgin Records after a bidding war. One article described this as " a bridge between the club styles to burgeoning eclecticism of big beat." OK. "Daftendirekt" kicks things off and is a live performance from Belgium. Distorted vocals. Dance beat. "Revolution 909" was the fifth single and adds multiple percussion sounds to the dance beat. There's more of a groove with the keyboards. "Da Funk" is where you really hear the Chic influence. Described as funk and acid and as Chic meets eletronica. That's fair. Supposedly about having dumb fun???? I like the scratching at the end. Right in the middle of the album is their hit "Around the World." A keyboard driven melody. More Chic-like grooves. The repetitive robotic vocals of "around the world." A special mention to "Rock'n Roll" for its irritating sounds. As some of you know, I appreciate some songs that irritate. We get quick laser and zipper sounds in "Burnin.'" One of their earlier singles is "Indo Silver Club." More house with the beat. The album ends with "Funk Ad" which is a reverse clip of "Da Funk." Pretty cool. It's was hard to listen to this album given how big and widely played Daft Punk is. As an album, it comes across as it is, a compilation of singles. I like their big hits to a certain extent and I appreciated their irritating songs. A long album at 73 minutes. Obviously, their influence would continue to grow for the next twenty years.

Ganske bra, god vibes men er sånn album jeg hører på i ett strekk, uten å single ut en sang

Very listenable. Great background music. Made me want to move around. Basically this album feels like it accomplishes everything it set out to do. 4.5.

Well, if youve read some of my previous reviews you'd think I'd dislike this. 1. Intended for dance floor 2. Repetitive. 3 Over an hour long Wrong. Its bloody ace. 4

Great debut from a band that expanded on the electronic music sound.

Really cool

As repetitive as daft punk can be, there's something about it, something playful maybe, that still makes it fun. It slips in an out of the background. Around the World woke me up, for instance. It works for me.

I love the first three or so tracks of this; the false starts, the growing menace of the throbbing bass drum. It's like trying to find a party at 3am, and then it finally kicks in. I think the rest of the album isn't quite the best party in the world, it's a bit too long, but it's still pretty damn good.

Revolution 909 - Da Funk - Around the World. A great debut for the french duo.

È l'album che mi piace di meno fra quelli dei Daft Punk, ma è comunque un esordio col botto.

Četvorka samo zato što mi je Discovery malo bolji

bangers after bangers

Not their best work, but still good by Daft Punk standards.

Once upon a time, in a Paris bedroom, two longtime friends made an album that would bring French house to the masses and change electronic music forever. Homework isn’t Daft Punk’s masterpiece (that would be 2001’s Discovery), but it shines like a raw-cut diamond, displaying the duo’s knack for selecting and manipulating samples to create something entirely new and irresistible.

It was good, wish there were vocals

House Music: One of the few things the French do right.

Classic!

metkaa vingutusta ja vängytystä... debyytti albumi, hyvä sellainen, ehkä top 3 daft punk albumeista (heillä on yhteensä neljä studio allbumia) joo on tosi hauskaa kun on muhvellettu ääni ja se hiljalleen tulee selvemmäksi kuin siirtyisi toisesta huoneesta...jossa basso ja rumpali kuuluu....musiikki huoneeseen... jossa selvempi äänenlaatu....tosi hieno efekti taas kerran... hyvää työtä... rollin n scratching paras viisu...

Lekkere muziek, waarschijnlijk best vooruitstrevend. Helaas dat elektronische muziek al snel wat ouder klinkt. Soms ook beetje lomp hard. 4*

I’m excited to listen to this! I really like the Daft Punk I’ve heard, but it’s been a very long while since I listen to an album all the way through. For some reason, I thought one of my favourites (Robot Rock) was on this album. I was wrong. Songs I already knew: Da Funk, Around The World Favourites: Da Funk, Around The World, Phoenix This hit the spot many times for me. Several times I found myself with goosebumps, wondering when and how certain chords would resolve or how long I’d be teased. The beats are great throughout, and I love the rubber synth. The best songs on this album were 10 out of 10 for me. However, I did find there to be a fair amount of filler dotted about. This is the kind of album where you find your favourites, and then tend to skip the others because they don’t add much to the experience. Overall, I would still consider this to be a great album despite the lesser songs included. An easy recommend for people who enjoy EDM.

I was wondering where the DP was. Glad to get this one first. I expect more. Some of this is a bit repetitive but the enjoyable earwigs on here more than make up for it.

Not so much an album as a dj mix in the form of an album. Two stellar singles and some great rhythms, but they'd nail that 90s elusive beast 'the great dance album' next time round.

Nice background music

Superb house album, though too monotonous at times for 5 stars. Personal favourite: Rollin' ans Scratchin'.

dong ci da ci....

"hot mix of P-funk, disco, acid frequencies, and hip-hop-style sampling... club bricolage; immediately brand new and yet utterly retro" according to the book, and who am I to disagree?. Still sounds great 25 years on, but as I recalled maybe a bit too long, and would be improved by dumping a few weaker tracks.

Of course some classic bangers on there, but I really enjoyed some of the lesser known tracks that I haven't heard in a while

Rollin and Scratchin Rock n Roll Burnin Alive

Although not as good as Discovery or Random Access Memories, Homework is still a very solid album and has some absolute bangers, like "Around the World", "Da Funk" and "Phoenix". However, since it is a debut album, it definitely suffers from early installment weirdness, and it is obvious that the Daft Punk duo hasn't found a style yet. Still, this album is quite good, and a must in every party. I miss Daft Punk... :(

Fantastic house record. You can tell its a bit earlier for them, but its just great!

Hope y’all did your homework! 4/5 Great debut album. It’s disco moderné . Hopefully y’all revolved around the word enough to put the punk back to the funk. Standouts: Revolution 909 Da funk (great music video too) Fresh Around the world Rolling and scratching Teachers High fidelity Burnin Alive

around the world, around the world

A very lengthy 16 track - 74 minute album. Great album overall but by far not their best. There are a few main standouts, but there's just something lacking throughout. Perhaps it may be knowing their latter works or that they went into their record deal thinking they were just making a bunch of singles, there's a definite lack of cohesion throughout the Homework. Best: Da Funk; Around The World Worst: Teachers

As it turns out, this is great music to listen to while playing Risk of Rain 2. Those French robots sure know how to make some catchy beats! They also sure know how to make the worst song ever created ("Rock'n Roll")! I say that with love, because the three duds on this album (that song, "Teachers" and "Oh Yeah") are so bad that they're funny as fuck, and I enjoy that. "Da Funk" is super funky, "Around The World" is my sleep paralysis demon and "Burnin'" was playing while I won the aforementioned game of Risk of Rain 2, and I couldn't have done it without that. (Insert a whole paragraph of "Around the World" here)

Daft Punk is one of my favourite artists, I dont think homework is their best but it put them on the map

I love Revolution 909. Rock'n Roll is annoying, and the album is a bit too long.

Bon album! A réécouter et voir la suite de la discographie

haha, classic

Great, weird, unique

-This is VERY good focus/get shit done music -The transition into the drumbeat on WDFK was DOOOOPE -I definitely feel "in the zone" -Da Funk - oh! I've heard this! The production on this album is very very good. Clean, but has juice. -This does NOT feel like something from 1997. More like 2007 onward. So supremely ahead of its time. Impeccable dance music. -RnR is a bit grating -Admittedly some of the later tracks are less notable/feel more dated -Overall this was great. I'm not sure if I would rate it a 3 or a 4.

Solid 4. Da Funk and Around the World are fantastic.

4.3 + Not so much an EDM record as an exploration of sonic textures. Daft Punk have always been supreme composers, knowing how to create suspense, introduce themes and build to climax. The best moments on the record take singular sonic elements and manipulate them like putty, warping them and twisting them and compressing them into fascinating shapes and sizes (e.g “Rollin’ and Scratchin’”).

Amazing

This was my first intro to DP as a whole album and I loved it. The creative use of chopped and warped samples is unparalleled, and I really enjoy digging through the sources and discovering music that way. At times, there are tracks that sound a bit like experimental noise techno, but overall it's a great album to play and come back to every so often.

Muy buen disco!

Still good today.

I do like me some Daft Punk but this album feels a bit mediocre these days. Certainly a few interesting bits here and there and I certainly am into Da Funk and Around the World but everything else just feels a bit samish.

Banging

One of my favorite things about Daft Punk is their desire to break their songs down to reveal their structure to give us an insight to their process. They are also keen to share their influences within their work as shown by ‘Teachers.’ This lends their music a sense of approachability and enthusiasm. Homework is Daft Punk’s first major label record and was one of the first wide reaching French house records. The music is driving, playful, and minimalist in parts.

hard this one as some of it is really just repeats, but some repeats are oh so good. the good is a solid 4, but some of the tracks bring it down a bit. Seems like some isolated DJ tracks which bout be better in the sum of their parts which is when they shine.

Electric

Started off the bat as a strong 5 contender with excelent build up to "Da Funk", which is straight-up amazing. However, later experiments proved to be fatal - both for the rating and listeners ears. Had it not been for tracks like "Rock'n Roll", it would have been almost perfect. Overall a great album for vibin' d-_-b Highlight: "Da Funk"

particolare, mi piace, senza voce se non 'Around the World' Anche 'Teachers' con nominati tutti gli ispiratori del duo (credo)

Had to skip “Around the World” because I value not having that one stuck in my head for the rest of the week, but yeah, Daft Punk Good. Sitting down with an album from them was a weird experience because that’s really not the context where I’m usually hearing them, but as always with EDM/adjacent it’s pretty much ideal focusing music for me.

Their second album blows this out of the water but if you look at it on it's own, it's still a very good album.

Pretty good, some hits and some misses. Don't know much about the genre but sure will listen again.

Great album! Great electronic jam.

There aren't many classic dance albums that deserve to be on this list but this one definitely does. Da Funk especially is one of my favourite tracks. Too long to listen to in one go though

Played this album a lot in the 90's, tempted to give it 5 stars - but to these middle aged ears some of the tracks are just to repetitive.

Iconisch album, met enkele zeer herkenbare hits. Wel wat veel van hetzelfde op den duur, waardoor het al snel (goeie) achtergrondmuziek wordt

I'm not the biggest Electronica fan. Still, it's easy to see how this album was ahead of its time when it came out. You can really recognize a lot of musical themes that are present in this genre today. So that was cool, even if I didn't like the music quite as much as other labums

My bias here is I love Daft Punk and Da Funk opened my eyes to dance music. This album is brilliant. Not at their imperial peak, some tracks are filler. But it also has Da Funk, Around the World, Phoenix, Oh Yeah, Rollin and Scratchin, and Alive. A daft, punky mess indeed.

Well crafted, unique sounds.

hell yeah I love Daft Punk, tho I think Discovery was better, this album is still a solid 8/10 favorite songs are Da Funk and (everyone’s favorite,) Around the World

Eintóm snilld að eilífu!

Classic!

Música electrónica. Le voy a poner un 4 porque tiene la de Around the world.

1997. Around the World, Burnin', Rock'n Roll

An amazing house album. Wonderful on its own but more than anything teases the amazing works that were to come.

around the world, around the world

Listening to the whole album it's amazing in hindsight that they've had such mainstream success Obvious call-outs to Da Funk and Around the World which arguably owed as much of their success to their compelling videos as they do to the tracks themselves

It's a banger to be fair
