so good. I think they could have made it shorter, but honeslty the fillers are still super good

Was originally looking at a 4.5 rating, but that song “Burnin’” almost made me rage quit the album. It got so painfully annoying, I did finally hit skip, and thankfully the album was back to being great.

this album is alright, it's a bit repetitive like many have said. i don't think this is daft punk's greatest work but i do enjoy a few songs from here that i listen to on a standalone occasion - never the full album. AROUND THE WORLD AROUND THE WORLD

Enjoyed this a lot. Cool to see Daft Punk’s beginnings, though if only one album is allowed on here for some reason, it should’ve probably been Discovery.

Love it! This was a nice entrance into trance.

My bias shows on this

It is astonishing that this is their first studio album, so incredibly well crafted, polished and it sounds incredible all these years later. It set the foundation for their later work, but this is the experimentation and see what sticks. Around The World became a major hit and everything else compliments the sound perfectly.

Somehow, Daft Punk has always lingered somewhere in the background. I know of their existence, heard bits and pieces occasionally, and I think I mainly had to get used to them. Way ahead of their time, then. Great music to listen to now.

Da Funk // Around the World // 4.5/5

Not their best album, but solid and raw Daft Punk. They can do no wrong!

French touch heaven

3.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/daft-punk/homework/ Some solid house tracks, some great pop tracks, but overall too long and repetitive. Yea sure that’s the point of house music, but still.

Around the world... Repeat 159 times Brilliant

Me gusta esta banda, pero no es mi disco fav. pero tiene la escencia de ellos

I lost track of time listening to this and that's a good thing when it comes to dance music. Just getting lost in the block rockin' beats.

Homework is such a fun album but it does drag a bit towards the end

Icons! Yeah some of it later in the record is a bit grating but I don’t care. 4 stars!

# In-Depth Review: Daft Punk's *Homework* (1997) Released on January 20, 1997, *Homework* is the debut studio album by French electronic duo Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo). What began as a collection of singles rather than a conceptual album would go on to become one of the most influential dance records ever created—*Rolling Stone* later named it the greatest EDM album of all time . This review examines the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, and lasting influence, alongside its strengths and weaknesses. --- ## Music & Sound *Homework* is fundamentally a house music album, but one that draws from an eclectic palette of influences including acid house, techno, funk, hip-hop, and disco. The album's sonic architecture is built on repetitive, hypnotic grooves that prioritize the dancefloor experience above all else. **Key Tracks:** - **"Da Funk"** – The album's breakthrough single features a growling, distorted riff that blurs the line between guitar and synthesizer. Built on a sample of Vaughan Mason & Crew's "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" , it exemplifies the "French house" sound: filtered, funky, and irresistibly danceable. - **"Around the World"** – Perhaps the album's most accessible moment, built on a TB-303 bassline pattern that Bangalter reportedly created by programming random patterns and selecting the best one . The vocodered repetition of the title phrase becomes a mantra-like hook. - **"Revolution 909"** – Opens with ambient club noise, police sirens, and megaphone commands—a direct reference to the French government's anti-rave crackdowns . - **"Teachers"** – A roll call of the duo's influences over a Parris Mitchell-interpolated groove, name-checking pioneers like DJ Pierre, Lil Louis, Romanthony, and Todd Edwards . - **"Alive"** – The final evolution of their first single "The New Wave," representing the harder, more industrial edge of their sound. The album's sequencing is deliberately structured for vinyl—four sides designed to be consumed in chunks rather than a single 74-minute sitting . Side A builds from the live-recorded intro "Daftendirekt" to the euphoric "Phoenix"; Side B stretches out with the loopy "Around the World" and the abrasive "Rollin' & Scratchin'." --- ## Production The production on *Homework* is remarkably minimalist considering its impact. Bangalter and Homem-Christo worked with a focused, almost austere setup: Roland synthesizers (Juno-106, MC-202, MKS-80, TB-303), classic drum machines (TR-707, TR-808, TR-909—the latter lending its name to "Revolution 909"), and samplers including the E-Mu SP-1200 and Akai S-01 . Their "secret weapon" was reportedly an Alesis 3630 compressor, used to create the album's distinctive "pumping" sound . This extreme use of compression—combined with filtered basslines and astringent hi-hats—creates a tension between bass and treble that became a signature of French house . The production philosophy was "less-is-more": simple elements allowed to evolve gradually over extended runtimes. Notably, the duo reportedly spent only eight hours per week over five months creating the album . As Bangalter explained: "We have no need to make music every day... The main thing is that it sounds good." --- ## Lyrics & Vocals *Homework* is predominantly instrumental, with vocals serving as textural or rhythmic elements rather than narrative devices. When lyrics appear, they're often minimal and repetitive: - **"Around the World"** – The title phrase repeated approximately 144 times, processed through a vocoder to sound simultaneously human and machine. - **"Teachers"** – A spoken-word list of influences: "DJ Deeon, DJ Milton, DJ Slugo, DJs on the low..." - **"Oh Yeah"** – Features vocal contributions from DJ Deelat and DJ Crabbe . The absence of traditional songwriting allows the music to function as pure dancefloor utility—there are no ballads, no guest vocalists, no concessions to radio formats . This instrumental focus was radical for a major-label debut in 1997, when dance acts typically included vocal tracks to cross over to rock audiences. --- ## Themes ### 1. **Cultural Archaeology & Homage** The album is deeply rooted in dance music history. "Teachers" explicitly acknowledges the Chicago house and Detroit techno pioneers who influenced the duo . As Bangalter explained: *"The least you can do is pay respect to those who are not known and who have influenced people"* . This wasn't appropriation but recognition—ensuring underground legends received credit. ### 2. **Youth Culture vs. Authority** "Revolution 909" directly addresses the French government's anti-rave legislation following Jacques Chirac's 1995 election. The track's opening—police breaking up a party—reflects the duo's belief that authorities targeted dance music not for drug concerns but because they *"don't understand this music which is really violent and repetitive... they consider it dumb and stupid"* . ### 3. **The Bedroom Studio Ethos** The album title itself is a cheeky nod to its creation in the duo's Paris flat, but also suggests their "homework" studying dance music's masters . This DIY approach democratized electronic music production—showing that hits could emerge from modest setups. ### 4. **Robot Aesthetics** Though the iconic helmets wouldn't fully appear until later, *Homework* establishes the mechanical, post-human aesthetic that would define Daft Punk. The vocodered vocals, repetitive structures, and machine-like precision all point toward their eventual transformation into android alter-egos. --- ## Influence & Legacy *Homework* fundamentally altered electronic music's trajectory: - **French House Explosion** – The album brought worldwide attention to French house music, inspiring a generation of producers . The "filter house" sound—characterized by heavy filtering of disco samples—dominated European charts by the turn of the millennium . - **The Ed Banger Movement** – Artists like Justice, Mr. Oizo, and SebastiAn can trace their aggressive, rock-influenced electro directly to *Homework*'s raw energy . - **Electroclash** – The early 2000s electroclash movement owed a debt to Daft Punk's blueprint. - **Cultural Penetration** – LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy wrote "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" as a direct tribute . The duo's visual language became so iconic it's been parodied everywhere from *Parks and Recreation* to *The Eric Andre Show* . - **Critical Reassessment** – While some early reviews were skeptical (*The Village Voice*'s Robert Christgau dismissed most of the album despite praising "Da Funk" ), retrospective assessments have been overwhelmingly positive. *Pitchfork* named it the 65th-greatest album of the 1990s in 2003, and their 2018 reissue review awarded it 9.2/10 . --- ## Pros | Aspect | Strength | |--------|----------| | **Pioneering Sound** | Defined French house and influenced countless producers; the filtered disco aesthetic became a template for 2000s dance music | | **Dancefloor Efficacy** | Every track functions as effective club music—there's no filler in terms of utility | | **Production Economy** | Demonstrates how minimal elements, expertly arranged, can create maximum impact | | **Historical Consciousness** | "Teachers" and the album's sample choices acknowledge dance music's Black pioneers, avoiding the erasure common in electronic music | | **Singles Quality** | "Da Funk," "Around the World," and "Revolution 909" remain classics; the Michel Gondry-directed videos for the first two are iconic | | **Cohesion** | Despite being assembled from singles, the album flows surprisingly well as a listening experience | --- ## Cons | Aspect | Weakness | |--------|----------| | **Length & Repetition** | At 74 minutes, the album can feel exhausting; many tracks overstay their welcome, with "Around the World," "Rollin' & Scratchin'," "Rock'n Roll," and "Burnin'" accounting for nearly 30 minutes combined | | **Accessibility Issues** | The abrasive, minimal nature of tracks like "Rock'n Roll" and "Rollin' & Scratchin'" can be alienating for casual listeners | | **Lack of Dynamics** | Compared to later Daft Punk albums, *Homework* offers limited emotional or textural range—it's primarily designed for clubs, not headphones | | **Vocal Scarcity** | The minimal vocals that some listeners find hypnotic, others find monotonous; tracks like "Oh Yeah" and "Teachers" have been criticized as annoying | | **Aging** – Some listeners find the album hasn't aged gracefully, with certain tracks feeling "headache-inducing" compared to their later, more polished work | --- ## Conclusion *Homework* is a landmark album that succeeds on its own uncompromising terms. It is not a perfect listening experience—the length and repetition are genuine issues for home listening—but it is a perfect dance album in the sense that every track works in a club context. As one critic noted, it's *"the hardest dance album to ever go gold in the United States"* . The album's greatest achievement may be its attitude: Daft Punk refused to compromise their underground sensibilities for mainstream success, yet achieved both. They brought French house to global attention while acknowledging its Black American origins, created enduring pop moments without traditional pop structures, and established a robotic mythology that would sustain their career for decades. *Homework* remains singular within Daft Punk's catalog—the raw, unpolished foundation upon which they built their empire. As *Pitchfork* noted in their 2018 retrospective: *"Homework remains singular within Daft Punk's catalog... the record also set the stage for the duo's career to this very day"* . For listeners willing to surrender to its repetitive, hypnotic logic, it remains essential listening—a dissertation on dance music delivered with irreverent charm .

Random Access Memories is their crowning achievement but this has to come first for that to exist. Great production, great songs, fits the repetitiveness of the era. Much more get lost and vibe than people on this site realize it is I think.

Daftendirekt is such a banger

Electronic dance music. Normally with this kind of thing, a whole album of it ends up being samey. You can’t accuse Daft Punk of that. Yes it’s a bit long, and it doesn’t suit every occasion, but today I enjoyed it out on a sunny walk.

Not quite on the level of their later work but still good, I like it much more than most electronica. Around the world

A great collection of dance tunes - clearly influential and with some absolute classics - but I didn't come away as amazed as I thought I would. Perhaps the effect has been dulled over the years? Perhaps their later work will appeal more? Put on Da Funk and anyone will dance, but I guess I was hoping for more. A 4 seems fair.

Variety: 4 Adequacy: 5 Listenability: 5 Uniqueness: 4 Emotionality: 2 = 4.0 "The song's a year long and had been playing for months/ When he walked into the place" I knew this was waiting for me when I woke up, and I woke up with "One More Time" stuck in my head. Wrong album, but whatever. These guys were a big part of the latter 90s for me. Remember playing the hell out of this one, but like with a lot of stuff I've heard before it has been a while. The big hits still get plenty of radio play, so Daft Punk is never far out of mind. Really looking forward to this one. THE TRACKS "Daftendirekt" - I didn't recognize this title. Then the repeating ( notice I didn't say repetitive!) vocal starts and I'm back in 1997. Perfectly paced layers build this up so that vocal bit doesn't get tiring, and then you blink and it's over. Set dressing more than a real song, but this does the job of setting up that this will be an album experience I think, rather than a collection of tried and true stuff they worked out in the clubs and then burned for a first release. "WDPK 83.7 FM" - The faux radio station gimmick is... it's fine. I'm not the biggest fan, but this was only 28 seconds, and leads right into the bit at the beginning of the next song. I'm willing to forgive a lot of this since I know we're in good hands ( I feel similarly about Songs for the Dead by Queens of the Stone Age as well). Some groups rely on this as a crutch rather than flavor. "Revolution 909" - Never one that was in constant rotation, this is still more than solid bit of toe-tapping goodness. The electronic hi-hat carries us through and we get some good dynamics. And once again, we're out before things get stale. "Da Funk" - There it is. The music video of the dog guy walking around with his boombox is burned into my brain, so I can never remember if the street noises are as prevalent on the album itself. Listening to the album cut and I don't think they are. Anyway... shit - what an effectively bold opening right into your melodic hook. I could listen to this on a loop all day long and not get tire, but the guys know when you've had a too much of a good thing and a little less than halfway through the zipper electronic line comes in and stays around. Layers! It's all about the layers! Aerobics music for robots, and I couldn't be more into it. All time 5 star track. And I'm pretty sure that won't be the only one off of this. "Phoenix" - On every track so far I've been like "oh yeah..." despite mostly not remembering the names. I could see this one in particular being a tricky proposition. Similar stuff by other groups I've found grating, but I think mostly because of the intense 90s of it all. So much of Chemical Bros and the like is couched in style and feels like them trying to be cool, where this is so unmannered , dorky, and referential to earlier eras it doesn't feel so tied down. The boots and cats beat here is supplemented by more than a few hooky bits and feels varied enough for what it is. I love the parts where everything muffles like you went into the bathroom momentarily and then came right back into the welcoming crowd. ( though not really - I hate clubs. I just imagine that's the intended effect) "Fresh" - And now we're on a beach somewhere listening to the tropical vibes carry over the sand dunes form the killer party a ways off. Not their best stuff here, but works well enough. Feels slight despite being over 4:00. "Around the World" - More proof that repetition does not have to be repetitive. This song is constantly changing and morphing. Just when you start to wonder how many times you nodded your head a new element comes in and ups the ante. Another unforgettable music video that perfectly illustrates their top tier layering. This belongs on every "greatest dance hits" compilation that comes out. The funky bass line that plays under compliments the robotic vocals and my favorite bit is about halfway in when the beat drops out momentarily and then comes back, only to build up and up and up 'til the home stretch. A true perfectly mindless groove. S-tier ear candy. "Rollin' & Scratchin'" - This is where i can see some people bowing out and the patience wearing thin. Not me though. Against all odds this does not bug me in the least. Where someone else might hear a bag full of dozens of cell phones all going off at the same time while an electric tea kettle boils over, I hear only the sick beats. This what I might put on to clean to, or compile Excel sheets or whatever mindless task you can think of. "Teachers" - Love a good roller skate jam, and this might be closest we get here. Daft Punk unembarrassingly calling out their influences here. Also as inessential as we get on here, songwise. "High Fidelity" - The skipping record immediately jumps into a clean beat that they continue to empty the contents of the kitchen sink onto for the remainder. A little too chaotic for me and less cohesive than everything else we've seen. Up until around 2:06 when it finally settles into a groove. "Rock'n Roll" - Like "Rollin' and Scratchin" before it, I can see this one grating on the casual listener. This is really as purposefully difficult as they get though, and is this noise any more abrasive than a siren or a horn you might hear in a more generic track of this type? Well, maybe, sure. But it works for me. I still might keep this track in mind though if I ever want to clear out a party. "Oh Yeah" - Their finniest track? And also their sexiest track? Over before you can even figure out what's going on though. Real disaffected Waitresses-like vibes here. "Burnin'" - Is that a "Baba O'Reilly" sample? Or an interpolation? Funky stuff, and possible the most joyfully danceable thing on here, which is saying something. "Indo Silver Club" - The music fades in as we walk through the doors of the club and we're right into it, and no reamp up necessary as we're treated to the weirdly bumblebee-ish electronic buzz over the groove. We don't stick around too long though ( maybe to grab a quick drink) as the world of the streets outside open up and we walk 50 feet to the next where there's a similar vibe, but only just so. We don't stick around here for long either though, and the night ends abruptly. "Alive" - Most abrasive beats so far on the album. This one builds though, and from the almost industrial clatter of the beat we eventually get to some forward momentum when the synth line slowly rises up to meet it. That hard beat softens and fades before coming back in what feels like a more energized variation, and we ride it out to the end. "Funk Ad" - We end things on a very brief remix of "Da Funk" that's from Bizarro land that doesn't add much to teh proceedings but which does signal the wind down. Still counts as more of a real track than the radio station thing. HIGHLIGHTS - "Revolution 909" - "Da Funk" - "Phoenix" - "Around the World" - "Rollin' & Scratchin'" - "Rock'n Roll" - "Burnin'" - "Indo Silver Club" MIDLIGHTS - "Daftendirekt" - "Fresh" - "Teachers" - "High Fidelity" - "Oh Yeah" - "Alive" - "Funk Ad" LOWLIGHTS - Not here FINAL THOUGHTS At times here I was reminded of everything from disco, to Kool and the Gang to early Madonna, which I think goes to show these guys were not just jumping on the bandwagon but were drawing from what, at the time, would have been a very uncool era. This is at times funky, bright, energetic and joyful where I see a lot more self-seriousness in their electronic contemporaries that doesn't hold up nearly as well. My biggest complaint here is that there are some tracks that feel a little fatty ( "Fresh"), but to remove them would mess with the pacing too much I think. But even their mid material is very listenable and polished. They were all their influence right on the sleeve and there's a refreshing lack of shame in anything here that makes me happy to revisit this era or music when the grunge hangover has mostly worn off and fun, airy shit was viable again. For good or bad, I think Daft Punk was one of the driving forces behind the evolution of pop music into the stew of countless influences from all eras that it is now. Nowadays I could not pinpoint where a song from the last 20 years came from, where before this it is absurdly easy to do. I also wish it had ended on a stronger note, though it does feel ocmplete and wrapped up in a nice bow at the end. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Trim that fat if you want a true 5-star experience. The highlights alone are 45 minutes - Alternately, just let the vibe overtake you and sit in the experience. - I'll be keeping all this, but I reserve the right to skip around as I see fit :) FURTHER LISTENING - Discovery by Daft punk - You've Come a Long Way, Baby - by Fatboy Slim - Madonna by Madonna - Something Special by Kool & the Gang - Computer Games by George Clinton

A revolutionary dance album that brought underground house to the masses with gritty textures and infectious grooves, though some repetitive tracks feel slightly longer than strictly necessary.

A 4.5 to be fair. One of those rare albums that is both timeless and very much of its time

J'aime beaucoup la discothèque

Punk Daft

Daft Punk would go on to become legendary figures in their scene and beyond, so it’s interesting to go back to their debut and trace how their early style began to take shape. While the album can feel a bit repetitive at times, it’s very accessible and driven by strong, infectious rhythms. You can already hear the foundations of the sound they would later refine. The best tracks for me are "Da Funk" and "Rock’n Roll".

Great music not my style

Stop the music and go home I repeat, stop the music right now

I like Daft Punk a lot, and there are definitely a bunch of five star moments on here, but there's a bit of filler too. Really strange choice to include this over Discovery, I'd say; the latter is miles better.

There's this musical taste phenomenon in my house: my wife or daughter would like a song/artist/album and I wouldn't. I would be questioned as to why I didn't like it, then I'd make my commentary. And these two women would be LEGITIMATELY offended, as if I was critiquing their music tastes or saying something bad about them, not the music. As if they had written and performed it themselves! Today, ladies, I get it, and I'd like to offer my apologies. Reading these awful reviews about a pair of artists and an album I love so much just makes me sad and defensive. And that one guy saying if he wanted to listen to something repetitive that he'd just listen to his wife? Get a divorce, asshole. She's better off that way. ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

Much better in album form, wasn't much of a fan previously but this was enjoyable

Would have given it a 5 if it weren't for burnin giving me a literal headache. Once that broke me out of my daft punk listening reverie it allowed me to realize that, while this is good, it's a bit disjointed and sounds more like a debut album rather than what we became to know as peak daft punk

I like the discovery album more, but this one is also on the top of the list

Not really my thing, but this is pretty undeniable

A discografia deles é extremamente consistente. 4/5

I've listened to this album a lot. It's too long but so it goes with Daft Punk albums.

I love Daft Punk, but I don’t love this album. It gets a four only because it’s the only time I’ll get to rate a Daft Punk album.

I really enjoy Daft Punk, and I went back-and-forth on whether this album was four or five stars. Ultimately I settled on 4; this still sounds like Daft Punk finding their footing with their sound. Some tracks are classic dance mixes, and others sound like generic club songs without much personality.

So my jam.

Loved most of it, it felt very long by the end but you can’t deny the birth of a giant. I think I like later daft stuff more but a worthy debut.

This is a good album, but it's an absolute tragedy that Discovery isn't on this list. It's just this album but better. Much more fleshed out and accessible. I think it's funny that these guys tried to make electronic dance music but accidentally ended up making music I listen to in the background at work. Checkmate Daft Punk.

Rating: 8/10 The debut for the masters of French House has the duo finding their footing with their "signature" sound, if they could have one considering Daft Punk actually has so much sonic variety in the progression of their career. While there are only a few songs that stand up to the all time greats that they would release later on, Homework must still be one of the best and most revelatory electronic records of the decade. The Revolution 909-Around the World run is excellent, and the repetitive length of the album only, just barely, starts to drag a little because a few of the songs in the back half aren't quite as good.

After a hundred some-odd albums, I'm reevaluating my rating structure. 1-2: wanted the album to end 3-4: made it through 5-6: enjoyed probably won't listen again 7-8: enjoyed would listen again 9-10: run that back Homework sits nicely on the above much of this list currently, with some big influence on the genre. 8 dogs out of 10 lizards

Daft punk just tickles my brain

Such a distinct sound that I really enjoy but can't name why

Daft Punk should 100% be on this list, but Alive 2007, Discovery, and maybe even RAM should both be on the list before Homework gets added.

Classic!

As one half of legendary UK and helmet wearing DJ duo Houmous & Chutney I’m really well placed to assess and review the work of Daft Punk. 4.2 7/16 Around The World

It's always a pleasure to stick this on

Good fun album, accompanied a long bike ride nicely. Still prefer the Alive albums. Felt like a fun mixtape.

Like, a lot of this feels like club vibes rather than actual tunes, but they are _aggressively_ vibey.

I don't have a ton to say about Homework: but that's very much by design. This is music made for clubs and boiler-room raves: not exactly settings where you are standing around contemplating the elements of these songs. Homework is an album that wants to be felt, and I believe it succeeds in this endeavor. On the surface these songs almost just feel like slowly evolving loops more than proper compositions, but I think this is part of the magic trick here. These songs are repetitive, but they are meticulously engineered around deceptively simple, but utterly infectious grooves that have the power to keep you moving constantly. The palettes here are bouncy drums, creative vox, rubber basslines, and disco-y synth melodies (the sort that Daft Punk would delve deeper into later). I will say that Homework sticks a little too close to the form factor of house music for it to have the same pop crossover appeal of their later projects, but if you love dance music on any level, this is an easy album to enjoy. And, honestly, if you're dance curious, Daft Punk's approach to melody and structure here is relatively approachable, and a good step into the genre. I think there are a couple of weaker songs here, and I also think Homework is easily overshadowed by later Daft Punk albums, but Homework is still incredibly enjoyable, creative, and surprisingly detailed. The album easily stands as a great independent piece in Daft Punk's discography.

Really liked this with some obvious standouts

A great and influential album, with a real mix of dance styles. I think Discovery is a far better album as they perfected the sound but this is a solid debut, if a little too long.

We only bloody well went and did it, we got to 500 albums! Is that a celebration or just another mark on the wall of a prison sentence that we’re not even halfway!? Anyway, cracking album to bring up the milestone. House, funk, disco, techno all curated in that kind of effortless cool French artists often seem to manage. It all feels very sleek and clean. My personal faves are the dirty techno like ones like ‘Rollin and Scratchin’ and ‘Rock and Roll’. More than a nod to Laurent Garnier in those. Can’t fail to enjoy this (or not for all the effin miserable reviews on here, dance music is supposed to be repetitive kids, but so’s punk, just different instruments!)

I love Daft Punk, so this was a nice treat. I can definitely tell this was one of their earlier works, it sounds kind of unpolished and raw but I liked it nonetheless. Some standouts were Oh Yeah and Alive. I listened to the 25th anniversary version and I didn't notice until like halfway but I still listened and I enjoyed a lot of the remixes. Daft Punk was one of the first artists I actually started listening to but never really exploring deep, so I really enjoyed actually listening to another of their albums in full. 8.1/10

Not their greatest work.

I want this album injected into my bloodstream. But they have better albums tbh. Iconic electronic dance music.

Jangly.

Me gustó. No lo acabé

Introduced so so so so many people to electronic music. Great record.

I’ve listened to Daft Punk’s Discovery and Random Access Memories quite a bit, but I’ve never listened to Homework before. I never think to name either one of those albums when I’m discussing my favorite music, which is a shame, because I listen to them fairly regularly, and I always enjoy both of them. While looking at the track listing to Homework, I recognize “Da Funk” and “Around the World,” but the rest of this album will be new to me. I’m excited to listen to this album today, and I’m hoping I enjoy it as much as the other Daft Punk albums that I know. I enjoyed Homework, but it’s a bit short of a five-star album for me. Rhythmically, I thought Homework really excelled. These songs had some incredibly catchy beats, and I enjoyed the bass sounds that Daft Punk used when crafting these songs. Melodically though, Homework just didn’t offer much, at least not on a consistent basis. Most of these songs were pretty long, and while I don’t mind their repetitive nature, I just wish there had been a better sense of melodic development on this album. As much as I enjoyed the rhythms on this album, some of these songs were pretty forgettable to my ears without catchy melodies. While I do generally enjoy electronic music, I thought that Homework was lacking a bit of heart and soul. Despite my misgivings about this album, I still thought it was very good, and it’s certainly incredibly influential. From a technical aspect, I don’t know much about electronic music, but for my money, Daft Punk’s name is pretty much interchangeable with the terms ‘house’ and ‘techno.’ These guys are so damn good at crafting music that they’ve pretty much become synonymous with these genres for people like me. Despite only putting out four studio albums, Thomas and Guy have had a massive impact on popular music, due to their ability to craft dense atmospheres with their music. As far as Homework is concerned though, “Da Funk,” “Phoenix,” “Around the World,” “Burnin’,” and “Alive” were the best parts of this album. I didn’t mind the more abrasive sounds that Daft Punk used on this album, but I think they’re at their best when they don’t use rough edges in their music. Homework might not be the best album in Daft Punk’s discography, but it’s a groundbreaking album, and something every music fan should experience at least once.

Muy bueno aunque levemente gede

Listened to this while doing Homework - shocking, right? Honestly, loved it for background noise!

Slightly repetitive in style of dem l but the bangers are banging

Loved it had a lot of fun

Banger! 4/5

An undeniable classic and excellent debut from the hall of fame duo. In my opinion they only get better from here, but Homework is an awesome album, if a bit long for a single listening session of music like this.

Not sure how much I actually enjoyed this! It was a lot more repetitive than I remembered - I love electronic music that evolves gradually, but this didn't get me today! Giving it another star in case it's a monday mood thing lol! :)

I know I want to like this band, and at the start I quite enjoyed the first two songs. I ran to this album over two mornings and it was good tempo music. But, it all just felt a bit 'sameish' as the album went on. Yep, I know I shouldn't everything to be a melody filled half an hour. And, it offered moments of variation... A guy I knew used to pass around a bottle while playing Around The World. It's a high 3, so let's go 4. 4 stars.

My deeply ingrained 90s know-nothing-at-all-about-music-but-snooty-about-it-anyhow brain feels like I should think this album is beneath, but I don't. It's fun (non-compulsory).

Okay, so I was enjoying it all the way until I hit Rock n' Roll. Something about that song just tanked the rest of the album for me. Still it's not enough to bring it below a 4 star. A solid album.

Tää on musta hyvällä tavalla housea popularisoiva pläjäys. Atw:n musavideo on mieletön. Myös yksi parhaista pyöräilylevyistä! 4/5

Tästä se alkoi! Mikä sääli ettei parempi Discovery ole listalla, mutta on tässäkin monta erinomaista hetkeä.

Pas leur meilleur album selon moi mais quand même quelques Bangers cultes comme Around the World, et quand même très très cool par ailleurs

Album banger de DP ! Plutôt en fond d’ambiance

I used to have no time for electronica. “That’s not music, it’s just noise,” I’d say. Then I gave it a chance. Turns out I like it, too. This album is great. I came into it pretty blind. After the first six songs I thought it was fine, but didn’t have a signature/memorable track. Then Around the World came on like John McClane. “Welcome to the party, pal.” After I finished it I went back and re-listened to the first six songs with new ears and Da Funk stood out. The driving beat(s), catchy - and, yes, repetitive hooks, and solid grooves were exhilarating. And I can assure you don’t have to be on ecstasy or at a dance club to enjoy this. I was walking my dog in the bright sunlight at first, then making dinner for my family. I can easily picture listening to this while on a cross country flight, or doing taxes, or doing 100 other things.

Everybody’s complaining about it being repetitive as if it’s not a dance album

Was vibing all the way through. Very influencial record even if their other two albums are better.

You can't deny Daft Punk are titans of house music. This normally wouldn't be my thing and I groaned when I saw the play time of 1h 15, but my toes were tapping the whole way through!

This was good - I love Discovery but this didn’t quite hit the same for me. Felt a little overlong as well. A very strong collection of tracks though and a solid 3.5 album for me.

why am i throwing ass in this coffee shop rn

Great to electronic/dance album.

This album will always be a classic, especially in the realms of electronic and house music. It seems like Daft Punk approached Homework with a more serious, straightforward mindset. While much of their later music adopted a fun and playful tone, this album stands out for its innovative and ahead of its time approach. The serious tone and groundbreaking production give it a longer shelf life compared to the more whimsical music that can eventually get old.

around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world Daft Punk is excellent in small doses or if you're in an altered state of consciousness. Sober, alert, the listening experience starts to drag a bit.

Fav Song: Da Funk Not my favourite Daft Punk album but still pretty good. I think some of the more DJ tool-ish songs get a bit repetitive though.

Never really listened to Daft Punk other than on MTV and the radio but man were they everywhere growing up. This is a solid album with some good bangers. The quality of the sound is exceptional.

(insert dancing gif)

Banger - 4,5

It is criminal that this is on here over discovery. Still a fun album

Overall: 8/10 I love hearing the evolution of the greatest electronica group to exist. A lot of their later sound can be found here, especially in the masterpiece that is Around the World. For the most part though, it's a lot of repetitive beats. I usually hate that, but Daft Punk are so good at it that it really doesn't bother me here. I do think that Discovery or Random Access Memories are better, but this one is great too. Fav Song: Around the World

This is the calm after the *sturm und drang* of Big Beat: fun, inviting, accessible, subtly innovative, and sometimes transcendent (I'm thinking of the guitar sputtering to life on "Fresh" like a futuristic rocket engine turning over after having sat for a while). Your tolerance for blippy shit may vary, of course, but I think it's a great bridge between the Planet Dust of the mid-Nineties and where dance music was ultimately headed in the new millennium.

“Around the World” and “Da Funk” were absolute staples back in high school and college, but the album as a whole falls into the usual electronic trap: repetition that sometimes locks you into a groove and other times just wears you down. It’s a fun listen with some undeniable highs, but I get why people are split on it.

„Real arround the World“

Can remember why they got big before they went massive

Love this album. Daft Punk has always been innovative and fresh. Each one of their releases brings new vibes

I haven't heard that name for a loooong time

Dance music and house music would not be the same without this

Love it! ★★★★

I can see why it was groundbreaking at the time. Great tunes, unique beats.

With chemical enhancement probably a high 4 or 5. Commuting to and from London it struck me as a bit long and disjointed. Still a strong electronic dance album. 90’s classic. Gotta love a bit of Daft Punk. Going to award 4 anyway.

This was easy and enjoyable to listen to especially after too much 70s rock recently

The first third of this album is so lukewarm that I was almost disappointed. Luckily, it soon became apparent why daft punk is greatest electronic band. Very special and fresh pieces, both harder and softer. I am totally biased, but I don't care.

a bit too much repetition but overall a good album with some great songs

A favorite from my childhood.

Around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world

Spoczko, fajne bardzo. Takie 4

An excellent album, though I'm not sure how this got chosen over Discovery.

Loooove this album.

- just a fun collection of catchy beats and hooks. it feels intended to be listened to intentionally instead of as background music in a club, but it also has a good amount of repetitiveness that's good for listening to while doing other things, such as... homework - a youtube channel I recently discovered (Captain Pikant) has several videos explaining how the drum machine patterns in Daft Punk songs were created (especially on the TR-909, namesake of "Revolution 909"), which has given me a new appreciation for dance and house music - all in all, very fun music to clean your house to

definitiv musig wo ame rave am beste isch, weniger elei uf de chopfhörer. es het es paar lieder wonich sehr geil gfunde ha, und es paar anderi wo eher ok gsi sind.

Always gets me bopping

A couple of classic tracks (the singles) and a bunch of other stuff which is okay. Still a great album. But not as good as Discovery imo.

Love Daft Punk though I do feel there is a bit of emperors new clothes about them. This, their first album before the subsequent later album release hype still stands up well today.

Pro side - it's Daft Punk, it has two of their best songs on here, it's iconic and influenced so much. Downside - honestly even in a flow state it's too repetitive for me to give it a superlative rating

Not as polished or consistent as Discovery, but still feels really fresh all these years later. Like flipping stations on the radio and just tuning in to a range of different sounds that all coalesce into the collage of dance music ideas. Wonderful stuff.

bibbity bobbity. makes ya move.

I liked the next album better, but this is good-mood ambient techno

I think I still slightly prefer Discovery to Homework, but this definitely is still a banging album with a lot of tracks that make you want to move. Standouts: Da Funk, Around The World, and Rollin’ & Scratchin’

Da Funk

We're lucky to have Daft Punk

fun. I'd only ever heard the 2 big hit on this album.

Electronic Pioniere. Einfach gross!

Recently been exploring this era that I missed and appreciating it more. Alive is a great soundtrack to rob a bank to. The rest are excellent for violently passing a slow car on the 405.

Love this album!! Reminds me of childhood, haha. Not necessarily Daft Punk's _best_ album (that'd be Alive 2007, or Discovery if we're talking strictly studio albums) but still great.

interesting video clips that complemented the music.

Really solid. Had it on for hours.

This was an excellent listen. I really enjoyed this for working music and can understand why Jordan was such a fan of this back in college while playing DOTA.

Takes me back to the time I was in Paris and went to the dance clubs. Highlight of the week when we were riding around the Arc de Triomphe on a scooter getting ready for the club beats.

starts out rough but once you get into it a solid album with no bad songs just good and better ones

Наконец-то дафт панк ура!! Великие + гениальные - альбом конечно не самый их лучший, но с учётом того, какое величие из него вырастет, это лайк

The start of the duo that changed electronic music. Not the powerhouse that discovery is but still an incredible electronic album

almost perfect

mid 4 p sure the coffee machine at work gave me a caf double expresso in my orange juice when i asked for decaf. loving this album as i work today.

debut album by Daft Punk that already shows signs off the high energy disco house sampling but also has some darker more progressive house and electro elements.

It's not their best, but it's them, and that's enough. Rediscovered some really good ones, Pheonix especially. The middle part of this album is just great. It's impressive how you can make catchy house tracks with so little.

I wanted to give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, and it's got a few great tracks with much nostalgia. But as an overall album, I think it's more of a ⭐⭐⭐⭐.

And EDM was forever changed.

I've mostly listened to Discovery era Daft Punk, but digging the euro club vibes.

This is a great album that played a big part in my teenage life. I am trying to not let the nostalgia cloud my vision here - I enjoy this one a lot but it’s probably not a full-on 5 for me. It’s very close though.

I like the genre and the artist, but this album isn't their peak.

Too long and too repetitive, but overall pretty good. I liked some of the non vocal tracks I heard for the first time more than some of the classic hits.

Really cool samples and a great album overall (but Daft Punk has better iykyk)

high fidelity peak

incredible but not a 5 yet, missing the excitement and diversity of Discovery in my opinion.

I'm not entirely sure why HOMEWORK is on this list. I mean, right? They put it on here over DISCOVERY. I'd always assumed that was regularly considered Daft Punk's great work. Or at least it was until RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES, which has also never been included in any newer editions, despite how absolutely phenomenal it is. So what gives? Now, of course, I have my affections for HOMEWORK. "Da Funk" and "Around The World" are undeniable. And I suppose if this list is basing its inclusions off of "what's important" rather than "what's the greatest," I guess this would be the big French House album you'd include (I've yet to hear a full Justice album, so take my guess with a grain if you want). But still, if I'm being completely honest here, I don't think HOMEWORK is the best album to introduce people to Daft Punk with. It all comes down to the overall sound of this thing. When I picture what this album would look like, I imagine dirty streets and dirty clubs. It's raw, it's grungy... It's not filthy, but dang if it don't have some grime on it. This is all a fine aesthetic, sure; I can see the appeal of it over the polish shine they'd put on their later albums. For me, though, I like the shine, and how bright and colorful it sounds. DISCOVERY sounds like the way the group's logo is depicted on the cover: shiny chrome with a world of rainbow underneath. RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES, meanwhile, is an inviting disco, bathed in the warm tones of 70's film grain — all that kind of flowery, artistic talk, y'know. You get my point, anyway: I like Daft Punk better when they're working with their disco influences then when they're doing pure, uncut French house. Like, I'unno, with these songs I find it a lot harder to know if you're closer to their beginning or their end. Although, to that point, I actually wanna take the time to swoop in and defend this album against a point I've been seeing. To a lot of people, this album is **repetitive**. If you were to ask 'em how this thing plays, they'd probably just say "AROUND THE WORLD" twenty times. And I can't exactly fault them for that sort of thing: dance music **is** based on repetition. Really, all music is, but the stuff you're supposed to dance to more so. After all, they hafta provide a consistent beat that you can boogie on down to. But that's the thing that bothers these people: maybe these songs are a little **too** consistent. Maybe there's no real progression and the songs are just happy to spin the drain forever until they decide they're done. **That's** being repetitive, and that's the issue. I wanna narrow in on "Around The World" as an example. I think to people like these, they can only really hear the voice saying "AROUND THE WORLD" 144 times. That, to them to me, is the entire song. But to focus in so singularly on the one lyric the song repeats is to ignore everything else that's going on. You see, there **is** actually progression going on here — it's just a little subtler than a brain so used to rock or pop would be used to. It's all about theme and variation: you establish what this song sounds like with all the base elements (based, drums, key, vocals), and then you add and remove elements to see how they sound. Drop the bass, change the drums, add a new synth... It keeps things interesting because the song is always evolving and morphing. That goes for every song on the album: "Da Funk", "Burnin'", "Alive"... Songs that **aren't** singles... I totally understand how someone could listen to these songs and not hear the progression, but at the same time, it doesn't even feel like you hafta listen that hard...? And either way, so many of these songs have such incredible grooves... Even if it's not generally the sound I wanna hear from Daft Punk, I can't deny that it's still quality as hell. And you gotta look at it like this: without HOMEWORK, we wouldn't have DISCOVERY and RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES. If it hadn't hit off as it did, introducing French house to a wider, global audience... Well, jeez, would I wanna live in a world without "Touch"? I don't think so. I gotta respect it for that at least. And lucky for the rest of it, it still holds up. I'd listen to either of those other albums first, or ALIVE 2007, but HOMEWORK is still Daft Punk doin' what they do best. It's hard to sneeze at that, and it's not something I'll get tired of, no matter how many times they say "AROUND THE WORLD."

Big nostalgia points for this one, since it landed squarely in my high school years. Back then I wasn't into dancing, but I was still transfixed by Daft Punk's Around the World music video. It was so weird and so delightful, and I remember it now almost 30 years later!

I've been a Daft fan since my college days. I appreciate their creativity and knowing how unpredictable their music can be. It was sad when they ceased creating. Good album.

absolutely pivotal and love most of the songs on here. listening at my desk at work with a cup of coffee makes it feel really repetitive, but drinking a beer dancing in my kitchen and these are ATB. missing some of the high level production and sound design from later years, but maybe just a product of the time?

Fresh and original but sometimes ends up like a fashionstore

It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely for me. I will admit that the back half is not nearly as strong as the first half though.

Discovery is better but this is still a pretty great album.

I'm not an electronic music type of gal. That said, this is the exception that proves the rule. Perhaps it's the mix of other genres emerging, or that they feel like cohesive songs. I'm not sure, but I'm in.

Groundbreaking album with Around the World and Da Funk being true classics in the genre. Album has a couple slow spot and lulls which keep it from 5 stars for me, their later albums are better.

08/07/2025 I've never given any time to Daft Punk before, it did start getting a bit boring towards the end.

Pretty good 4/5

This slaps

Huh? Retournez faire vos devoirs!

I don't want to love Daft Punk but I do. They deliver the goods sitting right there in previously delivered goods.

It's a fun amalgamation of Chicago House and Detroit Techno with a generous helping of electronic noise. Daft Punk helped deliver electronic dance music to the masses, which makes me wonder whether or how many other highly deserving albums of this ilk are on this list.

I love this record and keep it in regular rotation, but I think Daft Punk only had one five star album in them and it came right after this.

4.2 2x good stuff for a debut

Can easily get lost in the sauce on this album in the best way. Around the World, though, is the champion of this album.

I think I would give this a 5 if I was 10 years older. Some of it doesn’t really hit home for me, but it’s the birth of arguably the greatest electronic group ever. There’s also just some absolute heaters on here. Da Funk really gets me going.

It should have been Discovery on the list, but this isn’t bad.

THIS IS WHY WE DO THIS SHIT Highlights: - Rock N Roll - Revolution 909 - Indo Silver Club

Dope as fuck

Has some of my favs, though most of the album is more background droning than anything.

wel echt sick, maar vaak niet mn vibe

Listened to this while playing Scholars of the South Tigris. I lost. This album takes me back. So many great Daft Punk moments...from Around the World, to Da Funk, and that other one...classics.

Great album. 4 stars

Joyful, can't help but a boogie A couple of huge singles off this album gave some familiarity but it's a seamless journey through the album Top Track: Da Funk

The best kind of homework

Landmark album and still sounds as fresh as it did whennit came out.

Oh happy days. Party music that holds up.

Always enjoyed Daft Punk. Music is clearly intended for late night bars/clubs and can be repetitive for that reason. They have the melodies to keep you interested.

They are one of my favourite artists. Rarely, there is someone who understands music like Daft Punk. Homework is a great album, a triumphant debut. Though it has its flaws, the signs of Daft Punk's genius are there, front and center. It gets 4/5 for me, only because the heights of Discovery are so high, that even some great albums are unable to reach it. With that said, I love this album and if it had been the only Daft Punk album, it would've been a 5/5.

ah. uzme li se u obzir da je ovo tek haus/dens album, on je jako dobar. koliko se sjećam, drugi je album još bolji. around the world vrh

Such an interesting band. True pioneers in electronic music as seen on this album. What does it mean to listen to Daft Punk if you’re not dancing to it? The beat is such an essential part of what makes them great, but there’s also an almost Philip Glass-like sense of composition in these songs. Everything counts in a Daft Punk song. I was always afraid to let my punk friends know how into electronic music I was in the 90s, often feeling like I had to be one thing. Skip ahead to bands like LCD Soundsystem and low and behold, these things can be married to one another. Thanks in many parts to the contributions of this band and this album.

Discovery better be on the list, as it took this album, worked out the kinks and stepped it up on the hard hitting grooves. This one has too much distortion and heavy heavy bass. But was the precursor to something great.

I do own and I do like this album, despite the fact that it's not really my genre. Upon careful listening I see three reasons. 1 The music is based on the extremely sturdy disco four-to-the-beat of the seventies. Even I can dance to that. 2 This is real music, not just dance music. Interestingly, the book mentions exactly this (I never read the book before I make my review). 3 the extensive use of analogue synthesizers, adding to the second reason. The more extreme songs I like best. 'Around the world' is honestly very boring. The biggest problem: it lasts for more than 73 minutes. Oh dear. Never do that.

Awesome listen but its hard to beat Discovery and RAM. 4/5 Favorites: Da Funk, Fresh, Around the World, Around the World, Around the World

naja ... vier da funk around the world

Homework kom út á þeim árum sem ég mótaðist ónlistarlega. Ég keypti mér þessa plötu og hlustaði á hana aftur og aftur og aftur. Svo þróaðist tónlistarsmekkurinn minn í aðrar áttir en vá hvað mað hlakkaði í mér þegar ég sá þessa plötu á listanum. Ég skil alveg af hverju ég hlustaði svona mikið á þessa plötu. Algjört æði og eðalfílingur.

Around the world sends this project to the moon for me. Everything else was just icing on the electronic cake.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Around the World (7) 2 - Da Funk (4) 3 - Burnin' (13)

They were onto something.

There's songs on this that I really enjoy, so i thought I'd rank this fairly high, but it was long and got kinda repetitive. The songs I like, I love, a lot of the other stuff I felt like I was at a "get to it already" feeling.

Overall solid. Enjoyed more than expected

4 stars because it’s a classic. Not my fav album tho

I am an electronica junkie, and this album hits on all cylinders for me. "Da Funk" and "Around the World" are big hits that carry the album. "Revolution 909" and "Fresh" are good as well. Towards the end it kind of drops off.

Almost every electronic dance dj is influenced by Daft Punk, but very few can curate or craft an album even an ounce as good as their worst one. (Which to be clear is not this. Idk what is right now, but you know. Hyperbole)

A classic- so many good songs thay get incorporated into future mixes across the techno/EDM genre. So many songs that are featured in the Alive album as well. Not without flaws- sometimes it gets a little dissonant for me. But strong album- great for putting it on and getting shit done

Got some great stuff on here but slightly too long and muddled to be a 5 star one

Great repetitive as a genre

Not an album that I would just randomly throw on some day, but when the mood/activity calls (no more clubbing days for me, but gaming/work), it works damn well.

I asked a friend why dance tracks were so long. He told me that it's easier when DJ'ing as you have more time to mix and set up the next song. Fair enough, makes sense, but I didn't think it would be good for a whole album and maybe all radio edit versions of tracks would be better. I was so ready to rag on this album after looking at the length and some other reviews, but I enjoyed it. A hell of a lot more than I thought. There are certainly still a few duds. 'Around The World' is a perfect example of a 7 minute song that could be cut in half, the music isn't enough to carry the repetitive words 144 times, as well as a couple of others. In general though, there are enough iconic hooks and the music and melodies are absolutely catchy enough to carry the songs. It did feel slightly like the music equivalent of edging at times. You just wanted it to move on to the next bit, or build into something and explode into the drop, but I suppose that's not what house music is all about. Repetitive? Yes. To its detriment? Only sometimes. Overall I found this a very fun listen and I'd happily stick it on again any time and it makes me want to listen to more Daft Punk albums. A pleasantly surprising four.

Really good. Love the electronic aspects. Can see so many songs take inspiration from 2 men trying something different. Nearly every song is a banger and all follow a trend to keep it as an album.

Very different from what Daft Punk is usually known for, but still a very fascinating electronic album, not conventional even by today's standards

There's some boos. Very good. Four stars!

Such a fun album.

79/100. Homework by Daft Punk is the debut album from the French electronic icons and features some of their best early work. While I appreciate its influence, I personally prefer their later projects, where their sound became more refined. That said, this album inspired a whole generation of DJs and remains a landmark in electronic music.

They hadn't quite figured out their sound yet, but it a couple of the songs are classics.

Another CLASSIC group. This record is not as good as Discovery but such a good electronic house/dance record. I think on the back half there are a few sample choices like on "Rollin & Scratchin" or "Rock n Roll" or "Burning" That really get grating over time but the rest of the album is straight fire. Phoenix and Revolution 909 being some of my favorite deep cuts and Da Funk, Alive and Around the World being great standout singles for the record. It only gets better from here which is saying something since this is a dang impressive debut.

I've admittedly never been the biggest fan of EDM music, but I do have to admit that I had a blast listening to this. This may be my new favorite album over an hour long (besides Lift Your Skinny Fists of course, that album is ungodly). I haven't heard this take that often but I'd honestly say this is better than Discovery. Sue me. Solid 9/10

Great electronic album. Looking forward to more of them.

найс, сохранил. очень хорошо подойдет для фона.

Lmao at people complaining about the repetitiveness of Daft Punk's debut. It's sorta the point, but please God tell me that Discovery is also on here, because Homework really is an appetizer for the main course to come.

Thought this one was perfect at that time. Now i gave it another spin - not that amazing, still revolutionary

It's a classic with some absolute bangers, but it definitely drags, particularly towards the end. Still a solid 4 imho, but yeah. Discovery is definitely where it's at.

peak adjacent

This is a childhood album. We would play this on repeat while playing WoW and other various games. As an adult I still enjoy some of the songs but about half the album is kind of just random noises. It was a groundbreaking album and they led a massive career off of it but my taste has moved on past this style music and I don’t quite get the same feelings from it as I used to. 7/10

Discovery makes this album feel less impressive than it was when it released, but that is not fair to Homework. This is a great album in its own right and its rougher sound gives it its own unique appeal.

Album tracks were heavier than the singles so not quite what I expected

The day before this I had David Holmes as the pick. For that one I commented that I found it a little boring. As a rock guy in general I put this in a broadly similar category of electronic / dj type music - I know this is probably horribly wrong for people who know the style. Well, this was very far from boring. I found my self bopping along as I was listening to it. I probably could have done with it being a little bit shorter.

Simple, achieves what it aims to. I'm impressed that you can make a song that circles back to the same theme for 10 minutes and it's listenable. Didn't feel like it's special though. But it's very good craftsmanship.

Terrific, supremely inventive, and catchy af. Doesn’t quite rise to the heights of its successor album Discovery, but wonderful all the same.

I thought some of the songs at the start were a bit boring but then it went into a direction I wasn’t expecting. Probably my favorite daft punk albulm out of the three I’ve heard Favorite song: Alive Least Favorite song: Phoenix

Around the World.

Now this is good electronica. No annoying Tarzan sounds or weak beats here. Da Funk is an all time banger. Alive is way cool. It’s too long which deducts a star but this is a solid album.

I think this goes really hard. Rock’n Roll was kinda rocking and rolling me. Not their best but a great listen

Cool sounds and undeniably french

perhaps the most nostalgic album for me - I listened to this obsessively and it was for me a marker of 'cool' music that for example an older brother would listen to... it is def the second best album in their catalog but I do think the basslines go really hard and i love exactly the texture of the 909 bass ... so ya this one is a winner for me

Playing catch-up on old albums, and I agree with the sentiment of previous reviews. While this is really catchy and super enjoyable, HOW did they not include Random Access Memories to this list?

Given all the other electronic music on this list, I'm a bit surprised its taken this long to get a Daft Punk album. Even more surprised we are getting their true debut instead of their breakthrough "Discovery." I do love Daftendirekt as an opener -- doesn't really do a ton, but sets a great mood / groove out of the gate that bleeds through the following interlude like an open radio stream. Revolution 909 does serviceable dancefloor/disco made to keep a crowd moving. Da Funk is the first to _really_ command attention. A very Daft Punk snyth sound (bordering on vocals) opens the track to a live atmospheric backing, before stripping all background elements and cementing around a pulsing drum and bass step. This song absolutely fucks start to finish. Fresh is a really enjoyable one over headphones -- the synthtones paired with the sample of waves crashing is surprisingly uplifting and relaxing. I'm into it. Ah man Around the World will always bring me back to a simpler time of watching skate videos in my friend Thomas's basement. Something in particular about this song is tied to that specific point in time. And for that I cherish it. The song itself, I find borderline obnoxious if I'm being completely honest with myself, but hard to deny why its so damned catchy. Those wispy synths paired with the fat looping basslines are like magic. I like the press of Rollin' & Scratchin'. Just a good ole fashioned layering style song, but here each successive layer is more and more rewarding. Oh Yea takes things a much deeper direction than I was anticipating. Hip-hop in nature, but the 808s are so blown out it is almost caricature. Oh wow, I love Alive -- that synthwave sort of sound to the synths calls to a different era and is just so bright and poppy and wonderful. I know I've listened to this album before, but it has been a while. Gotta say this has more variety and depth than I remembered. While I maintain that Around the World is low-key annoying, I really enjoyed Da Funk, Rollin' & Scratchin', Oh Yeah, and Alive. That said, this album is wayyyy longer than it ought to be -- felt like a few tracks could have been trimmed without much loss. For that this falls firmly into 4 terriroty.

Feels like a pretty raw sounding electric album with loads of memorable hooks that I was certainly bopping to. Definitely falls into that early electronic category of some of the most repetitive music of all time, but they did a good job with innovative sound after innovative sound.

If this is on here then Discovery and RAM better be. Not saying this album is bad in any way, just that those are top tier. This album definitely shows the flashes of what's to come, just a bit more drawn out. Solid album even if it runs a bit too long. Was bouncing around working to it.

3.9 aptly named for revising to faves: rollin n scratching, around the world

My most listened to album of all time- and only a few weeks into my 1001 album run! Not for everyone, but definitely for me. Great album to get lost in.

not their best this is a really good house album

agree with my friend ilconfo

Solid but not my favorite DP album

Great album! Daft Punk series the bar for so much electronic music to come out in the following years. An absolute classic of the genre.

dr. dre is in the house, yeeeah a hell of a debut album - probably closer to a 4.5 for me. some of the tracks are a bit too repetitive to justify their lengths, and musique should definitely be on here, but otherwise, homework ticks all of my boxes. fun, catchy, and makes me wanna move. i think it’s really tragic that daft punk’s true masterpiece (imo), discovery, didn’t make the cut for this list. daft punk is dead. long live daft punk.

4 stars. Discovery would be 5 stars for me

It’s good. It’s fine. It’s nostalgic.

Best Song: Da Funk. Although "Around the World" might be more iconic, the deep groove of "Da Funk" is for me more emblematic of what Daft Punk does best. Worst Song: Teachers. Ignoring the fact that this protracted list of influences doesn't sound good, I find it such an odd decision to plunk it in the middle of the album. Surely the boring credits come at the end? Overall: Although the album does have some fun parts, hot damn is it too long. This easily could have cut a few tracks to be a tighter experience. Also, I've listened to their live 2007 album so many times that hearing many of these tracks outside of that remix feels weird.

Love to give it a 5, but there is just too much repetitiveness in many of the songs.

I'll start by saying, I am not super into EMD or electronic music. I've never really been into it, and it's never really been a huge listen for me, even when I lived in Miami. But, that being said, I really, really, really enjoyed this album. I think that, and I'm not sure how I can eloquently put this, Daft Punk's tracks are just fun. It's not about big drops, it's not about the most insane warble you can put somewhere. This album was just such pure jam. I found myself dancing along to it and just had a blast. I even went ahead and listened to 'Human After All' and 'Discovery' after this album for the feels and jams. Give us more Daft Punk!

this album told me: «ok dude whatever just relax, chill and vibe😎». and I agreed

Vad ska man säga. Det är Daft Punk och det är riktigt jäkla bra.

Fan vad tidigt skivan kom.

Really like Daft Punk and this album, but the length and repetitiveness hurt this some. That comes with the genre though; sampling and layering.

this was fun to listen to, i listened before and i didn’t care for it but it’s much better

Good noise :)

Im Gegensatz zu anderen Alben die geremixt sind und gleiche Wörter und Phrasen wiederholen, war es angenehm zu hören bis auf ein paar Ausnahmen.

Brilliant bit of electronica. A modern classic. Very enjoyable.

As as Chicago native and a kid who danced to house music in high school, some of Daft Punk's music really resonates. While house music is my preferred version of electronica or EDM (electronic dance music), I give a tip of the hat to Daft Punk for creating some very interesting music.

Generally a fan of most forms of EDM and this was a very influential record.

Oh, I'm so smug that this came up as an acknowledged classic, because, as a newly qualified teacher back in 1996-7, I got my class (7 and 8 yr olds) to do a dance to Around The World and perform it to their parents. The kids all appeared to love it. I can only hope that, years later, when Get Lucky made Daft Punk even bigger, some of them looked back fondly on how cool their Y3 teacher must have been 😉 So basically, what I'm saying is, this stood out to me at the time as being uber cool and a bit different. It was great to hear it again; it's house music that actually makes me want to dance. It's repetitive, as house music is wont to be, but they have the magic formula and it's very engrossing. Très bien. Now then kids... 5, 6, 7, 8...

I liked it! I remember it. Good stuff. Not much more interesting to say.

Only 4 stars because it's not discovery

Le voy a poner un 4 porque tiene la de Around the world.

Around the World.

Rating: 7.5/10 Fun dance album, not a fan of the more noisy tracks but most of this is great. Favorite songs: Revolution 909, Da Funk, Phoenix, Fresh, Around the World, Burnin', Indo Silver Club, Alive. Worst songs: Rollin' & Scratchin', Rock'n Roll.

Never heard this before, but it was pretty solid.

Omg this was unreal Revolution 909 I just wanted to DANCE Overall big slay

MDMA was so good in the 90s it had everyone dancing to two french robots saying around the world for 7 minutes. Daft Punk are great but even though this is a top notch debut and fantastic french house music. It's not a great Daft Punk album. 8/10 Have to listen to discovery now

Favourite tracks: around the world; alive

I waited for them to start singing but equisde anyways it was cool

It's sad that this is the only Daft Punk album on here because while great, I like Discovery more

I liked this alot more than I expected to. I never listen to this genre, but it was almost industrial at some points which was fun. Going in I thought it would be really repetitive, just because that is what dance music is, but to my surprise they were able to keep my attention throughout the album and I enjoyed the variety in the tracks. I also never realized that Daft Punk were a 90s band, so I guess they really were ahead of their time. Don't know if I will ever listen again (maybe as background noise), but I enjoyed this album quite a bit.

I love this album, but I don't give it a 5, because I don't think it is transcendental for me. "Discovery" is definitely a 5 for me, but "Homework" is just fun and funky in the way I like "funk." It's solid all the way through.

funk and around the world are sky level tier songs! the album overall looses a lot of that magic personally. Its still a interesting refreshing listen but its not a light listen. A decent debut for this extraordinary duo. It seems a bit lengthy, but considering that this wasn't planned as an album but is a collection of several tracks they've written before, it's a minor fault. Some real bangers, some tracks that feel like fillers, and a bit repetitive at times.

Big Daft Punk fan but even I have to say that this album is a hint too long! Makes sense as a club record, not as solid in a home listening context. Still, it’s made bearable by being 74 minutes of Daft Punk! So many great tracks, from the hits to the deep cuts. Some weaker tracks pad out the runtime for sure (I was never a fan of Oh Yeah), but those tracks are always surrounded by more bangers. A strong debut

Definite warm nostalgia feelz on this one as it was an important part of my transition from "no, only guitars are good music". Not entirely coherent as an album true, but as an example of the "French-house" wave that was coming, it's definitely up there. Plus, shiny helmets *snigger*

Please reform for the rest of my salad days, mr and mr punk

Not necessarily my favorite genre, but good to dance to and an good electronic album for people who aren’t necessarily into electronic music.

The hits still bang, but overall not as good as I remembered.

This is not the best daft punk album. This is not even the second best daft punk album, yet it’s still a very good daft punk album. Listening to this brought me back to sweaty evenings in big room clubs in Italy smoking furiously and being assaulted with that droning 4/4 and constant layers and dynamic changes in one or maybe 2 samples. Really nobody was doing it like Daft Punk at the time and even at the infancy of their style it still sounds distinct. The beginning of this has all the old hits. I could probably do without a couple tracks in the middle on this, but once we get to “Oh Yeah” it all picks back up brilliantly to the awesome buildup destruction of “Alive”. Even with the songs I don’t enjoy in here this is still a non stop, no bullshit album. Great stuff.

Daft Punk is an act I like the vibe of more than I like their music. Love the costumes, the aesthetic, all the people they collaborate with. I enjoyed this enough, even if I was just waiting for the singles to come around.

Around the World.

Fantastic, but felt like it lost the plot in the last 25-30%.

Quite liked this. Funky with a twist!

Awesome

shi was cool pero necesitaria tar cogio en pichi pa disfrutarlo como se debe and I ain't doing that lol, 8/10.

Smart dumb fun.

i prefer discovery, but this is still a great album

I forgot how much I love daft punk. What a sensational album. Not a 5 because some songs are not amazing but its still pretty damn good. Can’t wait for R.A.M.

It’s so cool listening to this early album knowing what’s to come, you can see what they were trying to do even at the beginning. It’s not their best, but deep cuts from revolution to all around the world make this album so fun. The transitions as well!

Great album. I enjoyed it.
