Reviews (page 4 of 7)

some of the songs at the end were pretty nice but overall this album fell short

It’s fine as background music, some of it wanted to skip through. A few tracks are decent as groove background the hip hop/rap aren’t noteworthy.

A sound track to a movie I should have watched. Wasn't a bad listen, but i don't think i'll revisit it.

I didn't get drawn into the music.

I really liked the opening track Keeping Pigs Together. The album is a mix of chill and club. It is also hit or miss for most of the tracks. I prefer the chill ones. The club tracks are very cliche and just not good. 3 Least Favorite: Some Kind of Kink The Rake Favorites: Keeping Pigs Together Don’t Go Nowhere Bussing Belladonna

There aim was to satisfy and they did

Nice enough but very few vocals.

I'd never heard of this band or, by extension, this album. After a quick read of the linked wikipedia page I was quite excited, it sounded like it would be right up my street. However, I was quite wrong. I couldn't really get into it. It wasn't bad, just very mediocre, like a chicken-in-a-basket version of Radiohead.

Sounds like the soundtrack to a ps2 racing game

Started better than it finished

Never heard of this before, reminded me of Massive Attack. I liked the beats, good for vibing around the house on the Sonos. Realistically not relevant enough to be on the list but I enjoyed it.

Another album for which I was very glad to have been on a treadmill. Some interesting stuff and good rhythm.

Never heard of this band, album started strong, had a few questionable songs toward the end.

Enjoyable mid-tempo EDM with bits of dub, funk, a little jazz at times - shades of Soul Coughing, but JUST shades... nothing really memorable or catchy but they successfully bring you from one track to the next without a lot of effort. Vocal tracks were a little week but overall pretty fun. Has a good beat you can dance to it. Always cool to get something I've never heard before, will be checking the rest of Red Snapper's catalog. Interesting drum/bass/guitar core.

It was okay.

Pretty decent, amusingly filthy in parts.

Is there just not enough good music out in this world? This is like the 10th trip-hoppy late 90s/early 2000s album that sounds about the same as all the others. But I don’t even know what to replace it with for 1001 albums, maybe the 2010s and 2020s have more gems now that electronic and industrial elements have fused more solidly into the fringes of music to put a hyperpop/intense spin on a lot of genres for eclectic new blends of sounds. But lord knows the boomer that made this list won’t include any of that

Not groundbreaking stuff, but good variation and atmosphere building made this an electronica album I surprisingly didn't hate

Better than expected.

pretty fun and funky but no reason to revisit; is this the album with the least robust wikipedia page?

Love the instrumentals. Acid jazz is so rad, and they blend together acoustic and electric instruments so smoothly. Most of the vocals are forgettable at best and obnoxious at worst though and I kinda of wish the whole thing was just instrumental.

Interesting trip hop using live instrumentation. Not so keen on tracks with lyrics.

I enjoyed it. You certainly don't need to hear it before you die. Can't fathom why it's on this list.

Slightly more fine than yesterday’s album

Thought I might like this more than I did, from the description. Still fine in spots.

Favourite songs: The Rake, The Rough and the Quick, I Stole Your Car, Bussing Least favourite songs: Alaska Street 3/5

Our Aim Is To Satisfy by Red Snapper is not a terrible album. They do nothing new in terms of their genre to make this album extraordinary. Outside of them being British (AGAIN), a band with an even more limited list of Wikipedia entries or chart traction has very little to do with a list of this nature. 3/5 for the album, 1/5 for the list.

This really took me back to when electronic music was regarded as dark and cool and this is right here in the tracks. Loved listening to it.

Interesting, never come across it before.

Soort drum n bass achtig album? The Rough and the Quick. Maar god, er staan ook een aantal absolute stinkers op dit album zeg... Dan kom je uit op een prima album. God ik begin het woord prima echt te haten ondertussen.. FAVO: Shellback, The Rough and the Quick, Alaska Street

It's alright, but with the power of hindsight probably not an entry in the list that anybody would or should be fighting tooth and nail to keep.

vibey. I polished glasses to this would recommend.

Milestone log 2: Day 200! I am starting to realise just how much I love music in general... my average rating has steadily increased over time and I have found so much new music that I love as a result of this project. I have no doubts that I will go the full way. I wonder whether a new edition to the book is released within the next couple of years... Now onto this album. Don't quite understand why I am listening to it. As much as I love electronica, this just has nothing of substance. It's fine, just... why?

if i went into a room with lots of people and this was playing in the background, i would enjoy the vibe of a lot of the songs i think, but also the rapping kinda sucked. whatever. double bass appearance is nice BUT the song it's on makes my head hurt. they're hanging me tonight is a pretty okay track

Intro music to the dark crime miniseries of my childhood. This album was released on the very tail of trip hop. It's extremely dated, not definitive of any new subcultural movement and, as far as I can tell, not really a huge thing back in the day. I have a hard time considering it essential. That being said, I did enjoy the album somewhat. Weak 3

Electronica is so hard for me to appreciate. I don't know how to connect with the genre and see it as background music. I don't think this was an album I needed to hear to expand my horizons on the genre and it seems to be late to the 90's EDM UK club explosion. 3/5

Me fait penser un peu à Portishead, Massive Attack. J'ai écouté plusieurs fois sans me lasser

Electro.

Very interesting. Would make a good soundtrack sometimes, and there are very fun beats. Still, not entirely memorable.

Well, if their aim was to satisfy, I'm happy to say this album is very satisfactory. Not much more than that, but it'll do. Inoffensive millennial chillout.

Pretty nice soundscapes. I liked this more than the other electronic albums from this era that have been presented so far, the harder beats and occasional rapping really help it.

Not that bad, but some of the songs were kinda long and sounded like the soundtrack of a 2000's video game

Better than okay, but not much. Overdone overall though there are several cool cuts and a number of vibe-y moods across the record.

Pretty MOR

Overall, I enjoyed it. 3.5

Some nice sounds and beats but I didn't really connect with this. I bet it's the sort of thing where you had to be there.

An interesting direction/choice for this project, I must say. I'd never heard of Red Snapper before, and they're definitely a huge contrast to many of the other albums and bands in the collection. Just given the nature of their style(s), it's a little hard not to treat the album as good/fun background music, but even so I enjoyed the experience. Kind of a distinctive mashup of bands like Massive Attack, Chemical Brothers, and others. I particularly enjoyed Karime Kendra's contributions in "Shellback" and "The rough and the quick"; I feel like the band-only/instrumental-only songs weren't able to hold my attention as much (except the last track, "They're hanging me tonight", suitably creepy and atmospheric). It's a shame that there's so little information on the band or this album in both Wikipedia and even the entry in the "1001 albums" book (at least the 2005 edition). I don't know if that's intentional, or simply reflects that their fans aren't all that interested in providing a presence in those venues.

Good dark breakbeat

first listen every song on this record is cinematic, but somehow overall it's not interesting enough

Very generic album with a relaxing atmosphere for the most part. Not terrible but not particularly good either. Not sure why it's on this list.

Honestly, when I started listening, I figured it was a DJ in the vein of DJ Shadow. I was surprised to find it was a whole acid jazz band. Makes for a more interesting listen knowing that, though I feel like the latter half of the album feels a bit more like that than a DJ. I don't think it's anything mind-blowing, but it's solid enough. Favorite tracks: "Belladonna", "Keeping Pigs Together", "They're Hanging Me Tonight"

I would thrive at a rave.

A little tedious to be honest

Quite atmospheric but nothing overly standout, and a weak start.

Perhaps I'm being over critical but I think some mixing decisions let this down, it feels quite abrasive after a while.

I did like this - but mostly as a background soundtrack.

3.3 stars rounded down.

Nothing offense about it, but nothing that I love either. I will give it a 3 because I don't really know what is considered good music in this genre. It didn't hurt my ears, I didn't want to turn it off, but I could have walked away and not felt like I missed anything important.

This was a fine enough listen. Good chill Sunday vibes. Nothing really wowed me, but it was pleasant.

pretty groovy, i could dance to this.

This didn’t leave much of an impression, was fine though.

Need further listen really

Yeah decent listen!! Some nice car chase music vibes but a bit more chill for the most part !! :D

Not my genre, but can work as background music

Amazing variety of different sounds. Remind me a bit of Radiohead, albeit with less interesting lyrics.

Average electronic album. Enjoyable but forgettable.

I saw the “electronica” genre designation on this and cringed. I haven’t enjoyed many of the electronica selections on this list, but this one was a bit different. It leans heavily into a trip hop vibe. The acoustic drums really make the album. It then goes off into like an interesting dub/ambient sound with the last 3 tracks. The only real complaint I have about this album (besides the overall length, should be about 15 mins shorter) is some of the vocal samples were really cringe.

New one for me. Funky triphop stuff

bit of a nostalgia bomb for me. doesn't quite live up to the memory though

I’m 3.5% cooler having listened to this. 3.5 stars.

An amalgamation of a variety of sounds with instrumentals that strive to be Portishead. Standouts are Keeping The Pigs Together, and Belladonna.

This album is what David Holmes' "Let's Get Killed" album wishes it was. Intricate but riveting instrumentals that actually catch interest and hold it. That being said, I wouldn't necessarily seek this album out again, but it held my attention for the most part and was decent.

keeping pigs together the rough and the quick i stole your car alaska street

Started off strong then drifted into being fairly average.

This was pretty funky. Nothing too spectacular but i enjoyed myself. This is probably more preferable as background music than anything else for me

It started strong. Chill electronica. Wasn't a huge fan of the 3rd track but I get the suggestions of sounding like Massive Attack. Next track got back on the groove motif. This would be a good album to have on a long road trip, especially driving an empty highway at night. I think I'm satisfied.

odd choice... when the album's only claim to fame is being on this list, doesn't really add up. Not bad though, just doesn't belong on the list.

Weird, trippy, funky

Pretty good

Interesting

Background music

its surprising how much i enjoyed this. I’m a little hit or miss on electronic

I appreciate this album being far less poorly aged than a lot of other albums from the time, as it has a lot of effects that feel more graceful(?) than even effects from half a decade prior, and the slow leaning away from electronica near the end of the album makes it stand out all the more as a careful blend of genres. Its still relatively boring like a lot of its contemporaries, far too long, and the vocal tracks are just bad for the most part, but when this album lays its cards out it can be a good time. Just have to have a lot of patience to get there.

Enjoyable trip-hop/electronica

Not bad, but also nothing on here was really compelling to me. I looked up this group and was surprised to find it's three dudes playing instruments and not just producers making beats digitally.

Lots of cools sounds, a little repetitive. Last song is the best

it was good. It was ambient music and good ambient music. The songs were long and it got a little boring though.

I generally like trip-hop, and acid jazz, when I hear it, but have never spent any time diving into it. Thought I would like this a little more than I did. Fine background music. Some tracks pretty interesting to listen to, yet others are a bit too repetitive. So probably a 3.5/4 here, but of course I can't rate it that.

better than i was expecting! 3.5

Kinda cool, very weird

Quite a diverting collection of largely instrumentals. Particularly liked Some Kind of Kink's borrowing of the riff from Rock On. Some strong similarities with Massive Attack, but just lacking a bit of menace.

Pour info je n'ai toujours pas confirmé à Robert ma présence ou non à la soirée des 1089 albums et je me réserve toujours le droit de rester chez moi.

Un album qui risque fort bien de provoquer la fureur de mon camarade d'écoute robcuillère.

Good jazz fusion band.

Some Kind Of Kink" Wertung: 🥁🥁🥁(🥁)/5

I’d give this one a 3.5

Not really my style but it wasn't bad

Pues ni fu ni fa, bien de fondo pero a veces tiene unos ritmos medio locos

New to me. Kind of modest jazz with electinuca ans years. It hels my attention and reminded me of recent Floating Points.

This is music I could clean my house to

could’ve done without all the uninspired hip hop and voice samples

Supprising album. Catchy, funky, electronic.

I concur

when its good its reaaally good but so many of the songs just have so many weird design choices that I cant give it a 4

This one was on the verge of being a victim of the previous album I heard (that Sabres Of Paradise) because I was not able to distinguish them at first but it changed with that Shellback track. This is much more trip hoppy and more interesting. It’s also 20 minutes shorter.

"The Rough and the Quick" was one of those songs that made me listen to the lyrics not because they were profound but it was unexpected. The song was a bit to repetitive but I guess the ol' in out in out is as well. Art imitating life perhaps? Good tracks - Keeping Pigs Together - Bussing

There was nothing I could see that justified this being on the list

HL: “Bussing”, “I Stole Your Car”, "Belladonna", “Shellback”, “Keeping Pigs Together” gonna give you like 3 stars gonna give you like 3 stars gonna give you like 3 stars White jazz, English electronica & hip hop combine Mildly frustrating experience, as about halfway through the album, the sound changed to something I wanted to listen to a lot more than the first half. Yet on the heels of “Rough and the Quick” & the annoying robot vocals in “Rake”, the switch to ambient strings and guitar feedback felt like I was suddenly listening to a different artist.

Man this is so 2000s. I generally like this electronic style, and it was refreshing to hit on a new genre on this playlist. Sounds like something my older cousins would have listened to growing up. Overall, most trscks were hit or miss for me, I liked Keeping Pigs Together and Don't Go Nowhere the most.

what the is this album doing here? where is the description? what made it notable? it's like a movie soundtrack. fine i guess probably good study music.

Good funky club music in the same world as Groove Armada, Basement Jaxx and Fatboy Slim.

So so…

Was never in my radar but surprisingly good album

This wasn't bad but it did sound like background music for a 00s video game.

I think I needed to listen to this louder. Some fine drums, I kinda missed a lot of the rest (noisy kids on car trip...)

It's fine, not amazing not terrible. Could be setbreak music. I had a dream last night I was on the rail at a show which was cool then did it twice after. That's a good night. "The rough and the Quick" gets this album an extra star, awww yeah

מוזיקה טובה!

Listened Before? N Judging from the listen counts on Spotify, this one isn't getting many listens overall... it's a good album though. Good mix of electronics and traditional instruments. Good grooves, too. Added to Library: N Songs added to playlist: Keeping Pigs Together

First artist so far I hadn’t heard of! Proper british trip-hop, just like those mad blokes from bristol.

They definitely be jamming The vocal parts are usually annoying especially the horny breakdown on The Rough and The Quick The last 3 tracks are pretty and are standouts 3.5 stars.

A good time, but really too background to be breathtaking for me.

Wish I was on acid

Was decent - kids even enjoyed it.

Some brilliant parts, some less so. Reckon these guys would be great to see live as there's a lot going on

Really enjoyed this

I really enjoyed this ! Could be because other albums this week have been quite dire so this was welcome relief ! Easy 3*

A mad mashup of styles and genres tied together with driving drum loops and dance grooves. Good, fleeting fun while it lasts though it doesn’t make a major impression. A few melodic numbers are tucked in at the end that I enjoyed.

I really can't say enough how much I love this exact genre. It's like Massive Attack meets Ed Harrison with some noir videogame soundtrack influence too. The downside is that this album starts on such a strong note with "Keeping Pigs Together", and then gets weaker from there. So much so that I'm walking back my first initial statement. That first track is moody, introspective, and intriguing. After that there's tracks that sound a little silly, with things like the distorted robot voices in "The Rake". I feel like I want to like the funk sound that starts to take control after the first few songs and hangs around. I like the almost De La Soul / new jack swing type of sound in "The Rough And The Quick"... BUT, it's just so far from the initial track, and that's what I was set up for!

An album with a PHENOMENAL opener. What a great song. I was fully ready to be introduced to an album that would be making its way into my favourites. But after that first songs, the album slowly ebbs away into mediocrity. It's not bad, but also not really good nor holding interest. Until the last song. But as an album it really falls short. But that first song though.

This is one of those under-the-radar albums I had never heard of before and since it is electronica, it's not something I would have seeked out. The album cruises along really without much song structure or format, but of an ambient, instrumental, almost soundtrack quality to it. For me, it was an okay listen, it didn't grab me and pull me in, but at the same time wasn't annoying and I wasn't tempted to turn it off early. I let it play, it served as decent background music and life went on. No more, no less. Essential...no.

Decent electronic music. Nice to have in the background.

The few songs I knew by Red Snapper beforehand - Snapper, The Sleepless - are bouncy, jazzy breakbeat-y things. This is quite different. Heavier. Lot of low end. Rather filmic as well. Quite a few songs sound like they could be used as a soundtrack to one of those scenes in Mission: Impossible where Tom Cruise is underwater and has only a few more seconds to defuse the bomb. I didn't mind having it on in the background but I think I prefer their more playful stuff. 6/10

A fair few great tracks but a lot of mediocre ones as well. Strong 3

Trip hop/jazz/funk/electronica all in one and they do it pretty well. 3.5. Not sure what mood I'd have to be in to put this on though.. probably just confused.

Les albums de techno sont étrangement bon sur cette liste mais en même temps.je n'ai aucune comparaison possible donc je veux pas noter trop haut. Mais j'ai aimé pour couvrir 7 km donc ça abonnant bien aujourd'hui 3.75

First track is good, rest is okay. The lyrics on 'rough and the quick' really come out of nowhere

Whilst this album invokes the sounds of Portishead and Massive Attack, it doesn't approach them fully. It was an enjoyable, if slightly forgettable listen.

"Some Kind of Kink" (track 2) - this has to be a cop on the old riff from "Rock On" - if so (and even if not-so) I love it. Unfortunately more than a little inconsistent throughout; after 2 tracks I had high hopes but I don't like any of the vocal tracks and it sort of slides in general. At its best though I enjoy the live/organic feel, but it's way too hit and miss to give higher marks; I would absolutely throw the best ~4 or 5 on a playlist. 5/10 3 stars

Nothing really that special that made me say WOW but few tracks were good.

I had never heard of this group. It ranged from nice background music to extremely annoying background music. Overall, it was fine.

I enjoyed this album - really groovy music and fun tracks. Vocal guests were a mixed bag.

Best Song: The Rough and the Quick. Often songs that are this sexually explicitly just come off as cheesy, but this one somehow manages to stay sexy. Worst Song: Belladonna. Too atmospheric for what the rest of the album contained. Overall: Better than I thought. Best when it has an interesting vocal sample to go along with it, but overall interesting enough to return to.

All over the place this one but I enjoyed it

The best way I can describe this is instrumental experimental electronic jazz. I was surprised that I kinda liked it. It was strange, but also fun and nice background music. 3/5

Was fine as background music, loopy and a little hooky but nothing amazing

Fist time through this one I wasn’t impressed. The more I listen the better I am enjoying it. Favorites: Keeping Pigs Together Others: Some Kind of Kink, Don’t Go Nowhere, The Rough and the Quick 3/5

Alright as background music. Akin to Portishead, Recoil, or the instrumental elements of 90s era Depeche Mode.

This was more of a background listen than anything else for me

Off to a strong start with Keeping Pigs Together -- some solid trip-hop, with Neo entering the matrix vibes. 1000% expect this band to be from the UK based on feel alone (Wikipedia confirms). Some Kind of Kink keeps things rolling with a funky little trip hop beat centered around a lyrical sample of the title. Bass work almost feels like something Primus would crap out as a joke. Shellback is fucking dope; James Blacks "Put That Away And Talk to Me" has a vocal sample technique that sounds almost the same. (rather than "could you give me like 8 bars" his says "could you tell me about the early days" with the same distortion and cadence) Rest of the album wasn't earth shattering. Fine trip-hop album; strong 3 / 5

Meh 2.5

nice production, aber wann hört man sowas?

Interesting and OK at first, but it didn't go anywhere I wanted to follow. Some nice melodies, but too dance-oriented for my taste.

Oh boy, yet another long-ass album of mostly unremarkable atmospheric electronica from around the turn of the century. It was fine. Next!

Had it on while I was working and it was fine. Tried to listen again on a walk and kept hitting fast-forward. Not unpleasant but not very interesting.

Not for me.

Generally, I like repetition but these beats are stale with little depth and mildly irritating. Though I like the concept of this album, lots of white space, minimal vocals and repetitive beats, I was disappointed by the execution ... and most likely the age of this. It's dated ... tho perhaps if I'd been exposed previously it would've been better received.

I remain unsatisfied, so I guess Red Snapper failed their aim. What’s more unsatisfying - when something is straight up no good? Or when something has a lot of potential that it fails to live up to? “Our Aim is to Satisfy” falls into the latter, and I think that’s worse.

Decent background music.

Techno stuff. Fine to listen to while working. The reviews kinda drag it down

Nice enough chilled electronica but a bit generic. I remember a few friends revering this but it never hooked me in. Not a bad album all up just not essential

More electronic music on this journey. I could easily pair this with Massive Attack’s album. There’s some slight differences within the genre. Regardless, another decent background album.

Almost lost me on the first song, but glad I stuck it out because there was some really cool parts. Not sure in what situation I'd listen to this in real life, but listening to it while driving to work definitely improved my commute a little bit. It feels like the soundtrack after Walter White breaks bad and made me want to buy a cool hat, dark shades, and sling blue meth on the streets of New Mexico. Fun fact: Led Zeppelin fucked a girl using a live red snapper in a Seattle hotel. Wonder if that's where this band name comes from...British people are weird, man. That was probably a little more satisfying than this album though.

This is very solid to listen to while working. Lots happening but in a peaceful uplifting way. Especially when the girl in The Rough and the Quick was talking about dirty things.

File under : need for speed soundtrack playlist

I did like this better than most others I've heard of this genre.

- Cool layering of different instruments and sounds - Good music to sample into rap beats - Enjoyed it more than I thought I would

Great electronic album. Has that 2000's vibe, great for getting work done and hearing in the background. Album cover also feels like the songs, driving at night in some industrial area. I really liked Keeping Pigs Together.

Enjoyed this a little more than expected! Never heard of this album or artist/group, but it was a nice little change of pace, some UK electronic music with a hint of hip hop thrown in there. Some interesting vocals here and there, and the production veered into some cool territory. Nothing too crazy, but definitely a few tracks I'll hang onto. Favorite tracks: The Rake, They're Hanging Me Tonight, Bussing, Keeping Pigs Together. Album art: Pretty non-descript picture of a nighttime highway. Not bad per se, but not at all memorable or distinct to me. 3.5/5

Acceptable background funk

6/10. weno pero meh

Good listen for a morning of getting stuff done. Impressive this is mostly instrumental.

was ok, probably wont listen to this on a whim since its mostly synthy(?) ambiance music. could be used for soundtracking a film if that gets you going

A pretty solid album and indicative of the time period. You can draw a line of influence from Massive Attack, through this Red Snapper album, to a lot of subsequent great British electronic music.

Þessi tók smá tíma að vinna mig yfir, fyrstu lögin voru ekki að heilla en svo gerðist eitthvað á miðri leið. Allt í allt alveg þokkaleg plata

Reminds me of DJ zincs first album. Cool music

Pas mal.

I found this album to be rather bland. There are some interesting moments, but it is largely forgettable. I found it drifting into the background quite a bit which is not necessarily a bad thing, but nothing about it really stood out to be. It works as atmospheric music, but there are much better examples of that as well.

Me gustó. No tenía idea de la existencia de este grupo ni de este disco.

The all instrumental pieces worked better for me... both the first (Keeping Pigs Together) and last (They're Hanging Me Tonight) were the strongest for me. Not enough on the album really engaged me, though overall in was an interesting listen.

This was interesting, I found this as an instrumental pretty entertaining. Although I wish they would have focused more on a melody and bridge then repetition (as trip hop). I think the only song that got dull after a while was "The Rough and The Quick." Yeah, the song could have ended a bit quicker than it did. Aside from that, I found it a bit atmospheric, particularly the last few pieces. Bit of a change of pace, and it worked for me. I kind of wish the songs were a little shorter as they did get repetitive, though.

Geez, did they let a few pill-popping British teens get ahold of the 1,001 list for an afternoon? Another trip hop, Massive Attack-like dreamy band and album. It wasn't awful, but it didn't excite me either. Decent background music, but a little monotonous. Perfectly average to me.

nice..

An album best suited for late-night listening. Dark and ambient, if not really exceptional.

3.1 - Another entry from the aughts that has me confused given that it’s generally left no lasting cultural impact. Perfectly listenable electronica in the vein of Chemical Brothers. I like some of the darker compositions on that latter half, particularly “They’re Hanging Me Tonight.” Really, though, here’s another record ripe for the culling!

This was fine, but I'm not sure I love the Genre

Not bad, but one has to wonder if it's really worthy of being included in this book. This sounds like typical typical trip hop from the early 90's, except it's a little bit more varied (and inconsistent) by including some hip hop and jazzy arrangements. On that front, I have to say that I'd rather listen to a band like Lamb than this, simply because they made it better.

Decent album but the first and last songs where the only memorable ones for me. The first one was amazing

I enjoyed this project, it's quite a vibe.

OK background music, but nothing special

5/10 incredibly forgettable

5/10. I liked it pretty well when they weren't talking/singing

Clean but boring. 6/10

Música electrónica. Ni fu ni fa.

Very experimental music, not sure what I feel about it

Problem with this type of music for me is that I go to clubs and dances where this genre of music is played a lot and I hear the top artists making it. This is fine but I've heard better. Sufficient music to throw in the background to do other tasks.

Listens:2 Enjoyed: I think If I had been up to date on albums I may have gave this a third listen before reviewing. It was definitely a refreshing album with a completely different vibe to many ive had so far. I think a third may have pushed the rating up

Sounds like a fleshed out soundtrack to a PS2 game that takes place in a factory level. Really does give off the grimey vibes of the era it shares with nu metal and the Matrix. The way it incorporates acid house and jazz in an upbeat manner reminds me of the Madchester movement. It's a decent electronic album, with a good track listing that transitions to the chiller ambient side as it goes on. Nothing groundbreaking or impressive, and it's way too long with a few duds, but this is one of the better electronic albums I've heard on this list. Favorites: Kepping Pigs Together, Shellback, Don't Go Nowhere, Bussing

Electronica, good background music. Some of the lyrics were more explicit than expected. Overall a typical example of early 2000s edm

I liked it. A fantastic background album.

I left this playing on the background and at one point I totally forgot I was listening to an album from the "1001..." list, and I thought I was just listening to one of those lo-fi youtube videos that I play when I'm working. Nice, boring, gentle music.

Not really my genre, but novel. Fine for background listening while working, somewhat chill with a 90s dance music feel.

I can appreciate this album and will probably re-listen to it someday; however, it isn't my favorite. I like electronic, but drum & bass type electronic was a little before my time.

It was good background music while I was working.

Good stuff, but few tracks that really leapt out at me. Great drummer and bassist, especially enjoyable on "Bussing", my favourite track on the album. I found myself wishing for more from their guitarist, amidst all the synths & samples. Interesting to listen to the feedback wailing on "They're Hanging Me Tonight" right after Fripp's on Bowie's "Heroes". I don't know if this would have been pressed to vinyl in 2000, but I preferred "Side 2". Overall, I'd be happy to listen to this album again, but I wouldn't reach for it, and would probably play only "Side 2". Is that 3 stars? Still calibrating my approach to ratings!

Nah, just hip hop backing tracks (with a few vocals). Could be good, if they were finished songs, but only ok as backing music as they are

Not sure why this album is on the list? It's pleasant to listen to, like I am at an expensive restaurant. But not much more than that

Cool, nogal onverwacht, maar best tof eigenlijk

Weer eens iets anders dan die gebaande paden van de afgelopen dagen.

I confess to listening to this at the end of a long day whilst drifting off to sleep. It sounded stunning as I left one life and entered another. I may have been a little tired and emotional.

Fav songs: - Keeping Pigs Together

Nice instrumentation and blending with the electronics. But the Album is a bit too long and I found myself bored

I liked this one, some really interesting stuff.

“Bussing”

Instrumental. Electrónica

I had the same issue with this I have with a lot of the kind of nerd-jazz intellectual alternative, that “being music” seems to take a back seat and many of the choices just age badly. Particularly the vocal element here, the whole robot voice repetition chorus thing did not satisfy.

fun dub record. if dub is your thing. Bussing is feeling my speed this morning.

This was pretty good, better than I expected. Nice mix of styles from electronic to hip hop. 3 stars.

have a feeling I would have liked it had I had the time to listen properly

Speciaal album, sommige nummers vond ik leuk, andere gewoon raar

Good not mind blowing. I like this kinda stuff though 4

All completely new to me: the band, this album, their music. I really like this album. Truly solid composition and performance. I dig that I can hear the drum kit. It would've been fine with a drum machine, but there's that extra depth and warmth to a human-played acoustic drum kit. And, wow, that bass.

It wasn't terrible to listen to. I am not eager to own it, but it's nice chill music.

Have to be in the mood.

Never heard of before. Okay background music. Not compelled.

Good band, nothin' different but well done.

Though I can't say this was my very favorite sound I've listened to in this project, it was definitely among the more unique sounds I've heard. An innovative album. Manages to be edgy and dark and sexy at times, while at other points being campy and a little bit goofy. It feels "lived in", as albums go. That said, I am not completely in love with most tracks and I am glad I listened, but wouldn't revisit most of this one. Fave track: The Rough and the Quick. Definitely broke a few taboos at the time.

A couple-few interesting tracks (Bussing and They're Hanging Me Tonight) but not sure I'd make an effort to re-visit the full album again.

Not my usual thing but enjoyed the sounds. Quite hypnotic and well produced.

it's ok

Somewhat pleasant. dance-y

Ekkert sérstök, samt áhugaverðir hlutinn inná milli. Á skilið aðra hlustun

Cool beats, perf for working.

Nice beats, samples and effects. Very y2k sound reminiscent of some video game soundtracks around the time. Keeping pigs together, The Rake, Alaska street

A lot better than I was expecting

tasty electronica

I thought this was good, punchy - it got old pretty fast for me though. Coincidentally I had just listened to a newly released album in 2021 right before this one that was strikingly similar - I think it was The Long and Short of It by quickly, quickly. Not sure if that means much, but it was intriuging to stumble upon that 21 year time warp.

Never heard this one before. I would have liked it more at the time of it's release had I been aware of it. Like the atmospheres created.

Not bad not but great. Live would be fun, but for listening at home it doesn’t do a whole lot for me.

Música ambiental, en ocasiones un tanto hipnótica. Sucesión de instrumentos. También alguna canción cantada. Bien para experimentar algo distinto, pero no nada más allá.

it sounds like pretty good video game/movie music

While this isn't my favorite album on the planet, it is pretty neat. The music, atleast for me conjures visions and feelings of what the album cover shows. It feels like something I should be listening while cruising through the dark. It's almost meditative in a way. While it might not score super high, I do think it's cool as fuck honestly.

Funky and ambient. A little repetitious on a few tracks.

Really cool beats. I dig it

This is a style of music I’m not particularly conversant in, so I don’t know how to contextualize it. Is it groundbreaking? Derivative? I have no idea. The album is pretty listenable. Repetitive, yes, but that’s clearly the point. Lots of moods to get into here, which I’m kind of liking. “Some Kind of Kink” and “Alaska Street” are miles apart, but I enjoyed them both. I had to turn off “I Stole Your Car” because I was in the middle of an online chat with colleagues and it was too damn distracting. Also, I appreciate genre fluidity in music, but the whole ska/hip hop element of that particular song was a bit annoying. I guess what I’m saying is, that’s my least favorite track on here. Oh geez, Bella Donna is pretty. Okay, I’ve decided the final three tracks are pretty fantastic, best of the bunch. Fave songs: Alaska Street, Bussing, Bella Donna

Pretty cool instrumental album that caught me off guard. Interesting mix of funk, hip-hop and jazz.

Decent enough as background listening, but not particularly exciting. "I stole your car" was probably the highlight for me.

Very mixed bag, some parts feeling like 5/5, and others genuinely 1/5.

Pretty whacky. Quite a lot of sonically pleasing bits but much of it is too out there for me. Probs quite good within its genre

Banging 2000s esque drum and bass

The musical embodiment of anti-piracy. Pure nostalgia of the little I can remember of the very early 2000s, I was very put off by the first couple tracks but it slowly turned into an enjoyable album I could see myself adding a couple songs to an outside summer garden playlist

Some hits, some misses.

weiiirdd

Pretty cool, almost chilled ibiza-ish, like late night minimal electronic stuff. Easily a 3.

Buff, pues me recuerda a rollo Bonobo. No terminé de escucharlo, porque solo lo encontré en Youtube. Si puedo le daré otra oportunidad.

I don´t know, I was esily boored by the album, but I am gonna feel bad if I rate it lower than average 3, because I simply couldn´t listen to whole thing.

Part really nice, part meh - quality varies as it goes

Hmmm, can't place this. Hmmm

Interesting, missed them at the time. Some good tunes & has a gritty feel, not bad.

Música electrónica.

Big tunes

Interesting and cool beats

Mostly instrumental jams, would probably go well behind a casual driving game.

Funky. Good background music to work to, but I've liked some of the other funky/electronic albums better.

Some of the songs on here like "Belladona" are very beautiful and I really liked that we had a mostly instrumental album today. Reminded me of Glitch Mob's lighter stuff for some reason.

More house music (this is two days in a row), but this one is interesting because it's organic real instruments. Honestly not that different from a Bonzo Terks philosophy when we're playing at our best; ironic because a saxophone player ended up joining this "acid jazz trio" with electronic influences hahah.

Enjoyed it, never heard any Red Snapper before

“Acid-Jazz”, kinda trip hoppy. Not sure why it’s in this list. I’ve never heard of it, the wiki article is like 3 sentences. It’s okay but you have to hear it before you die? Idk. Some solid tracks on the back half though

forgettable

7.1.26 (and 7.2.26) a fun album with some funky and entertaining tracks. very viby and good music for reading, but idk if i'll come back to this one. Favorite Song: The Rake Rating: 2.5/4

A mediocre palate cleanser for the next shitty fuckass album this list makes me listen to

It’s not bad, it’s just not crazy good and worth listening to. Three stars

Why is there so much shitty electronica on this list from the 00s? This one is a bit better than most of them. A few of the tracks made decent background music. 2.5

I appreciate the variety of the tunes on this album, even if I don't find any of the tracks particularly compelling. The mix of electronica and hip-hop brings together two sounds that have never been particularly in my wheelhouse, which greatly diminishes my potential "ceiling" for an album like this. And while I can admire how effectively it's sometimes done, the songs inevitably go on far too long for me.

This was not a dislike two star, more like a not my thing two star. Although I would like to sit down and have a cup of tea with someone who considers this a five star. Why? What makes you tick? Why is this a face melting record? Goddamn it, I’m going to have to by the book now aren’t I?

Yet another peculiar addition for electronic music on here. Some of this material is a non-starter, and other bits of it are quite cool, like the looped vocal line in "Shellback". Then there's multiple tracks of nothingburgers, then there's "Rough And Quick" outta nowhere. Then there's some dub on "I Stole Your Car" which would be normal and expected except it's not really done all that well? The production is actually neat enough, lots of little sounds and bloops to add some texture, but the parts don't fit together. Then the first two minutes of "Belladona morph into this pristine ambient passage. This track is actually really worth your time! Agh! I can't make sense of it! This album exists in a superposition where it's both everywhere and techincally impressive, but also nowhere and unmemorable. 2/5, a better and still similar listen is "MJ Cole presents Madrugada". I’d love to hear what Robert Dimery’s methodology was for picking electronic music albums. It’s so out of touch and seemingly random

Inconsistent sub Portishead

Ok ambient music. Hard to have in the foreground though, much more of a soundtrack/background vibe that I don’t mind playing but don’t pay a ton of attention to.

Another total waste of time

Never heard of them so let's have a listen, shall we. Huh! Really? We're doing what? What's going on?

Strangely I kinda like this - especially the first half of the album. The Rough and the Quick… um, hello!!
