Reviews (page 10 of 12)
I don't really enjoy concerts or their recordings unless I know the music well. I guess I just have a hard time picking out lyrics when it's not the studio recording. I don't know the Who, so the flare of hearing this stuff in a concert setting is actually a detractor to me.
Big Who fan here. But come on! I think live albums can be on the list but they have to be EXTRAordinary. This sounds like ass! It is the most stilted performance ever. And it sounds like ASS! Tommy's live portion was far more immersive and spontaneous. I have never listened to this album and now I wish I could go back in time!
If this list has taught me anything, it's that I don't give a shit about The Who. And, surprisingly, I really don't like Keith Moon's drumming style. The sound quality is incredible. If you didn't hear the crowd, you'd be hard pressed to convince me this wasn't recorded in a studio.
Has some classic songs but I wish they'd stop with all the live albums.
I like the Who, but this album isn't great. It comes from too early in their career for some of their cool later material, and the audio quality is ok, but not great. It doesn't make for essential listening.
06/10 Meh. Nothing special
This is my bias, but a who live album on this list is diabolical
Bonkers drumming. Didn't like music. Another band I can't get on with.
I do like some Who, but this just seemed a bit flat.
Again didn't really do much for me, but was OK, 2.5 stars
Great
I don't like The Who, and this live album didn't do anything for me that couldn't have been explained in a studio album.
Rubbish
this was kinda grating to listen to and i can't even explain why. woe, away with ye, doctor The Who!
the songs on this album are better on other albums :)
Weird to include a live album make up of songs that will already be on the list I don't particular care about The Who and this isn't a great way to listen to my first album by them. Doesn't seem like a particularly well recorded album and I can't hear anything special about it but I might be missing something Just seems very eh
Lyckas behålla livekänslan rätt bra och tre fina modssinglar spelas "Substitute", "Shakin' all over", "My generation" (dock i nåt vedervärdigt medleyformat).
I’m not a jam band fan and this was too close to that.
Great band but why include a live album
Naw
I guess you had to be there...
Not usually a big fan of live albums, and this is no different.
Very old to my ears - in the wrong sense of the word.
not for me
4/10 - damn this would've been a boring concert
Kind of all the same but fun anyway, enjoyed it while cooking
I have a positive association with the Who, but haven’t listened to much of them - so I was looking forward to this. Unfortunately, didn’t turn out to be what I hoped - the extended version felt interminable, the singing sounded like screeching at times, and none of the songs felt memorable.
So this is supposed to be one of the greatest live albums ever? I'm just not getting it. Partly I find Keith Moon's drumming very irritating, but the songs just don't seem like great versions. The 15 min long My Generation just loses interest as it goes on.
It’s fine. Not a huge The Who fan as it is, this a decent live performance.
live messy long songs folk
Are we supposed to be reviewing the original album of six songs, or the extended edition that the Spotify link takes you to? Either way, I’m not a huge fan of live albums. This is fine, I like the Who, I’ve seen them live, but you can’t recreate that feeling through wireless headphones on a train to Birmingham
These 20/25/30/etc reissue albums aren’t doing these 1001 albums any favors. This album was originally 35 minutes long but is now over 2 hours with all the special releases. Like they only thought 6 songs were good enough to release in 1970, but then some idiot convinced them to rerelease with 100 tracks, 90 of them just a sonic assault on your senses. Boo
Not a huge fan of a live album...
I disklike prog , they also copy some zep some stones and i also hate live wonder why it's here must have been nice to see it live , not to listen 55 yrs later though
>live album shiggy diggy
This is not a serious band. Now I'm older, I'm tattooed all over My wife is tattooed, too A-rooty-doot-toot, rooty-tooty-toot-toot Rooty-tootle-tootle tattoo, too
Not only was this a live album, but it wasn’t even a live album where the band innovated or improved on the album versions.
Live album, live album score. Maybe the gig was the biggest shit back in the day, but in 2026 I am not feeling it. Music ok tho.
Odd album to include imo. I didn't hate it I just don't think live albums should really be in this book unless they do something special. "My generation" would be the special thing in this album and while it's a decent song the extended version was barely recognisable as the same song after the first song concluded. It's not comparable to notable extended songs I've heard at shows/live albums namely "you made me realise" and "into the endless night" I think this album was well recorded which unfortunately detracts from what I find appealing about live albums. You miss out on the rawness that live music benefits so much from
Okay no more dad rock please
The Who is alright I like some of their stuff but live albums really need to justify their existence and this one just does not
Kinda more musical than lyrical, not very hard rock-y.
non mi piacciono
Solo perché è un live
Nije lose
Something for the super fans. (The spoken introductions were unique for the typical concert recording)
Like most live albums on this list, I’m not sure what makes this particularly stand out. Like yeah they sound good here and it’s cool to hear the interaction with the crowd, but The Who have such a great catalog that you don’t need to go into the bin and give me something average like this.
I thought I liked The Who, this album changed my mind
4 hours long
Hmm. Bit disappointing from a band I like.
Hmmmm I don't think so babes! Just guitars and drums and waiting for things to happen.
Why do we need a live album by The Who now
I mean…this is fine. I'm not a fan of The Who and generally not a fan of live albums. So this was about what I expected.
I don’t hate the who, it I DO hate live albums being on this list. For those who haven’t heard me rant about it I’ll keep it short, live albums shouldn’t be on this list they should have their own list. Live albums and studio albums have completely diffferent parameters for reviewing, so I really don’t know how you rate them against each other. But regardless this is just so not my tempo. Nothing about this album got me excited cause it just felt like a boring “beat of” album. It’s just so boring and forgettable, and it will not be something I’m thinking about in the future.
Meh.
Not a fan of The Who, at least not this album
The Who have this reputation as a loud, rebellious rock band, so I don't understand why they sound so damn whimsical all the time
i just don’t like live albums unless i already know the music
Oli sillee iha fine. Rehellisesti en kuunnellu kovi ajatuksel, enkä tuu varmaa ikinä enää kuuntelee. Ei vaan ollu mun juttu Paras biisi: Young man blues Arvosana:2,25
live albums are only good if you already care about the band and i'll stand by that
Not a fan.
I'll be honest I don't really enjoy live albums and I think they're a bad way to first really experience an artist, and outside of the "Baba O'Reilly" episode of Joe Pera I have not really listened to The Who As far as it stands now I kinda liked a couple songs but I need a better more cohesive way to hear them than "Live At Leeds"
I dislike The Who, and I dislike The Who live even more.
😖 vro
-tired of British bands from the 70s and 80s -why put a live album on here?? -I like My Generation usually but why is it so long? and most of the rest of the album is just meh
While I actually like The Who and have listened to this LP, allegedly one of the greatest live records of all time, I just don't care for it. I don't see the appeal. They strike me as an incrdibley sloppy live act.
No me interpeló
Accidentally started the Deluxe version of the album. I did not appreciate the extra songs. I get it's a live album so a cover like Summertime Blues will show up. It was probably the best song, but they managed to butcher that one too. And "My Generation" would be good if it wasn't 15 friggin' minutes long... I do not like the Who, I don't like them When or even Why either.
I tried numerous goes at this as my 1001 journey has been a little bit start / stop due to being busy on this occassion. I cant shake that this is just a bit flat on the vocals and to add to that it seems like a repetition with dull riffs. There are most certainly interesting sections but what value they have is eeked out for so long I loose interest. Not particularly top of my list at the best of times and this live version is worse not better. A miss from my perspective.
This is a very long live album that I don't think showcases the best of The Who. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it, but the recording didn't seem great and the tracks were almost as rambling as the spoken interludes. Do we really need a 17 minute version of 'My Generation'? The music was interesting in places with some prog-like noodling that would suddenly break into a crescendo of early rock. I think I will likely find some enjoyment in The Who, but this album felt more like something that would appeal to mega-fans rather than a good entry to the band's catalogue. Perhaps you had to be there...
It's a good live album but I always feel that live recordings should be kept off the list because it's cheating the game. My generation is already a classic but a 14 minute version would never be recorded in the studio or sold as a single, live recordings should be purely for the fans who couldn't get a ticket and they may as well buy a tour t-shirt off eBay to wear while listening to it.
#54/1001 🇬🇧 Never listened to this before, but have been to my fair share of gigs at Leeds Uni Refectory and seen the Blue Plaque. Its not a venue that i really care for but i'll try not to let that affect my review. There is no doubting the raw power of a band at the top of their game, but 3 of the the tracks here are cover versions. It could be argued that the 2 tracks on side 2 are overlong, but i guess representative of a live set. I've never liked the lyrics of Substitute so its the cover version that appeal more to me. The extended version perhaps is more complete than this which seems like a snapshot. Best tracks: Young Man Blues, Shakin All Over.
I like The Who, but this was average
Not my favorite era of The Who's music. I mean, it's good for a live album, but I largely didn't care for most of the songs in the first place.
I thought I'd be more interested, but the overly long songs did not impress
This is giving live albums a bad rap
question for us all: should live albums be allowed to count for this list? especially since I’m imagining some of the same songs could have already appeared elsewhere in here. no double dipping!! thankful to not listen to 2 hours of this because I didn’t like it that much was very surprised that one of the lines in summertime blues was also used in a pj harvey song i quite like
The man just doesn't have the charisma
I didn't finish it. I don't like the singing.
Not good. Not 1 star but not a lot more than that.
Rivigt, bra tempo Trevlig live spelning Enformigt Bästa låt: ingen men magic bus Mediokert
Lacked the direction and purpose of a normal album. The songs were okay, all of them were okay listens but nothing to write home about. All-in-all a very classic Dad-rock album
Live albums are generally for proper fans of an artist or a way to get a greatest hits of live versions. Unfortunately whilst i dont mind the who my interest does not extend to a live album on which only Substitute and My Generation really peak my interest. My patience was already wearing thin before i reached the introduction to A Quick one…. And at that point i was broken. Their cover of Summertime Blues is frankly atrocious. Fortunately the last three songs are the album’s strongest, but the damage has been done and the studio versions are far superior
I don’t really like The Who, live or otherwise - it says a lot when the thing I enjoyed most on this was their cover of “Shakin’ All Over.” A 20-minute version of “My Generation” is so unnecessary by any standard. The less said about that creepy little interlude after “I’m a Boy” the better.
I am still sceptical about the general principle of live albums appearing on this project, no matter how great sounding that live album is. And it's not even that I'm against the idea of live albums in general as I own some (of bands I adore). But *seeing* a band live before you die makes more sense to me than listening to a record of a band live before you die. This specific album was fine, but I'd much rather have heard some of these songs for the first time in the way they were originally intended to be heard. 2(.5)/5
The Who: Big rock energy is cool. I don’t really love any of their songs. Keith moon kinda does the same thing throughout all the songs, he’s overrated I think. What was going on with that My Generation “Medley”? It was like a bunch of extended intros that never really land any where. Felt long. We’ve had a few who albums so far -maybe this is the beat one because it’s live and like a greatest hits and I can be more forgiving for bad sound and sloppy playing 2.5 3?
I liked this more as it went on but I don’t understand the purpose of a live album unless it’s really different (like the Metallica album)
Legal, talvez pra noite e tal... mas cansativo/repetitivo para o dia-a-dia.
Fine
One of the first live albums where i prefer the studio version of ever song
No idea why this is on here. Not the worst thing I've ever heard, just not worth a listen at all, way too long
Yep
I don't get why The Who are considered great. I like the skill of Keith Moon on the drums, but the vocals just don't do it for me.
Idk, not that great if I'm being honest.
Nothing really bad, nothing really good.
Favourite Songs: Substitute
why is there a live album?
I love the live sound, it’s a bit too dragging for my liking, however there would be tracks I would revisit solely due to relatability in songwriting, but songs like a 16 minute track I can’t really look forward to.
Le live était sympa mais j'avais pas les refs des musiques et ça m'a pas plus entrainé que ça, mauvais jour
The first song was badly timed so I listened to a mono version. I am not a fan of live albums but understand why they exist...still...not my cup of tea.
The who? What? Where? Found this disappointingly boring. Never listened to much who and won't be in the future
2/5 not for me, why is this essential best: -
I mean, they can play. But why the fuck is a live album on the list when they have so many other albums as well?
3/10 Best songs: Shakin' All Over Live albums should never be on an "essentials" list - they are inherently on a different playing field than studio albums, which makes it pointless to compare. I listened only to the 6 original tracks on this album: later versions were expanded to 2x longer than the original. Typical 70s rock music; lots of drums, bass, and guitar, not great vocals. The solos are just excessively long and get quite dull (My Generation, I'm looking at you). I just don't see the point in this album on this list.
Fake
Naaah.
I don't know. It sure got energy. But so does a nuclear power plant. And I'm not a fan of that either.
okay, not my favorite.
Boring……
It was fine. Live silliness and a 60s rock band with a great drummer and some cool variances from the Rolling Stones and Beatles
Yeah I hate the Who
would actually hate being at this concert Would I listen again? No Deserves to be on this list? No 2.3
5/10 - wouldn't listen again
Wasn't really my vibe. Not bad, but I wouldn't listen to it again on my own.
In my opinion, a live album has to be really special for me to enjoy it. This album was not. Drums were neat, though.
Why is this here? There are already four other The Who records on this list ...
Meh. Live album.
Well it turns out I don't like live albums ! At least not this one
I just cant enjoy it. I like rock but this isn’t it. The lyrics suck and feel empty while the rest of the song has no clear rhythm.
Love the horns. Love the groove.
Quite nice, bring on Tommy
ik weet nog dat Praag souvenirwinkeltjes allemaal volhingen met The Who merch (??) uh ja verder vond ik deze niet echt super goed ofzo
Nonce
2/5 weak 6/10
Good for a live album and listening to earlier who that I was less familiar with. More wholesome rock and less jam band and drug influenced
It's Brexit rock at its finest. It's so fucking long and so fucking boring. At least it has a quick one whilst he's away, which in my opinion is their best song.
Rock n Roll i sitt essé. Skrikig röst och feta gitarrer direkt från live-spelningen. Förvånansvärt tråkig, repetiv, händer inte särskilt mycket trots att det låter och ger en inbillning av att det skulle göra det. 2/5
I do like The Who, quite a bit, but I've never really cared too much for this live LP. I know, I know, "It's the best live LP ever !!". Yeah, I'm not having it. Way too long and drawn out and quite a few songs I'm not that crazy about to begin with. Oh well.
Difficult to rate, had some decent songs - I liked 'A quick one whilst he's away' and 'Magic Bus' had some cool harmonica, the start of my generation was good but it didn't need to be 15 minutes long. Other than those songs nothing stood out overly and Im not a huge fan of the way Rogery Daltrey sings. 45/100 Score edited 28/01/26
As others have said, let us enforce the NO LIVE ALBUMS rule. Except for the Sam Cooke one, that one fucking slaps.
Trodde jag gillade The Who innan det här projektet!
Vill inte ha fler livealbum. Men ja, det var väl starkt framträdande. :)
Men sluta med långa live-album.

I like The Who, but I don't like live albums
Weirdly dissonant. 2/5
I'm getting the charm of a live album but I just found everything..loud Tracks to Track: I Can't Explain
This feels superfluous when there are already 4 other The Who albums on the list (3 of which I've listened to). It's a well-done live album, I guess, but I don't really know what justifies it being on the list. It's just inferior to the studio version of the music, and you also get weird pacing and tonal shifts because it's not a regular album.
Wasn’t a fan before listening and somehow didn’t experience a mystifying conversion afterwards.
Probably great, but not for me
2 stars We don't need no live albums. The Who were clearly a good live band, and having that documented is great. But we don't need to pretend like this is a must listen to album. It's not an album, it's something else entirely. I only listened to the original version because why would I listen to the entire concert? The album was what they released on vinyl, so I only had to do 40 minutes of it.
I'm sure a lot of people enjoy this. I am not one of those people.
Dont really get why this is here. Do we need another who album ? Some good tunes but a lot of mediocre stuff.
Their first live album. Rock. I love The Who., previous albums from them on this list have gotten a five from me. I am not a fan of this live album though. I am sure being there was epic for all involved. However as an album it's just okay.
an album that is greater than the sum of its parts and t r u l y an impressive feat of live showmanship, but unfortunately the music remains not for me. that aside, can you imagine seeing roger daltrey's hair in person during this? shame about the personality because his is horrible
decent but prefer not live for them
This goes back to my other Who comment, just pick something different
Disappointing for what’s billed as the greatest live rock album. It contains a couple Who hits that I like, but I found the performances kinda stock.
i don't really fw live albums most of the time, it feels like cheating. every song kinda sounded the same
mulla tuli tää jo aiemmin täällä mut en oikeen oo lämmenny the who:n musiikille. tiesin etukäteen vaan who are you biisin (throwback). tää oli ehkä kuitenkin parempi kun heidän studioalbumit mut silti tuskin mitään mitä palaisin kuuntelemaan :/
No private session used for Spotify. This is the second Who album in a week. This is more what I expected from my apparently limited knowledge of The Who, more straightforward rock. I think I would enjoy this album more if I was a Who fan.
Not an offensive listen (I sought out the original 37 min version on YouTube for my sake and the sake of the Who's score), but truly not an important record to listen to before I die. 2/5
Lowkey fatiguing.
Heat
I usually don't enjoy live albums and this one was no exception. And The Who felt a bit tame compared to previous albums
It’s heartwarming to hear them play classics like ‘I’m a Boy’ or ‘Magic Bus’ but idk what’s added by this being a live album. Also in between songs I couldn’t hear them or the crowd. So I listened again on headphones and found out it’s just like generic uncharismatic muttering. I like the Who but this doesn’t have the overt human presence that I want from a live recording.
Regarded by many as the greatest live album of all time. Not by this reader. Its loud but daltreys voice is so annoying it detracts from the rest of the band. Good songs in theory played well but fronted by kermit the frog.
3/1001 First listen. I played the original and the extended version. There is a full concert version as well. The Who have just never done it for me. They have some huge hits but I don’t often play those either. This album was fine. Doubt I’ll ever play it again though.
Nope.
Great band, great songs, hard to create a good live album
I like the Who. I like My Generation, and the covers on here are pretty interesting. It sounds like it was recorded underwater. Again, live albums usually sound bad.
Has points where it sounds good but not many. Id rather listen to the studio stuff.
I was never really into The Who ... hearing it live doesn't make me more into it ... I think The Who and Me are in two different worlds.
I listened to the original 6-tracks release. It’s a good live album, no doubt about that. The Who had great energy on stage. I kind of understand why this record would be included on the list, since most tracks are not featured on any other album. Even My Generation, the only album song, is a 15-minutes epic so different from the original that it’s worth a listen (even though I prefer the studio version - this one sounds a bit too much like 3 or 4 songs crammed into one, and it's so stretched-out that it becomes tedious after a while). But one listen was enough, and I doubt I'll listen to this live ever again. In addition, I don't think Live At Leeds is truly "essential material", it feels a bit like a placeholder. It’s a very short record, and there’s already quite a few Who albums here. This space would have been better used by giving a chance to another artist not represented on this list. I considered rating it a 3* at first, but I’m substracting 1 star for this reason. 4/10
Good energy, but nothing crazy either, but WHO is it? ;-) I was a little disappointed I didn't have an "amazing journey" but maybe it's not for "my generation" .
I would enjoy it more with the video. Without it, I just get bored. The tracks are uneven, with a few uninspired covers, the guitar sounds rough, and I mostly end up fixating on Keith Moon’s endless fills. He’s the real star here. I’m glad I gave it a listen, and it’s definitely not uninteresting because it’s still a good snapshot of The Who’s energy, but I don’t see myself coming back to it.
Nothing special in this live album and plenty of better stuff from THE WHO out there and better live albums too.
There are a bunch of The Who albums on this list. Why this live album - which is fine, but doesn't transcend the studio versions of the songs contained, nor the live album format itself - is beyond me. Funnily, there are also a number of Talking Heads albums on this list, but "Stop Making Sense", the one actual live album that does transcend their studio work and - to a point - the live album format, is not on this list. The mind boggles.
I'm not a live album type of person. Who needs a slight variation of a song with worse sound quality, and none of the energy from actually being at the show? At any rate, this album was pretty good with the qualifier "for a live album". That first paragraph was from yesterday when I was served Motorhead's live album. Both have been 'hailed as the best live album ever', and both were.... fine. For a live album.
Live albums are never good.
very average
Takes awhile to get going, but once it does… The Who have always been a band I respect more than I love, but are rock gods there to only be respected? And this album fits that mold exactly. I respect it I guess.
I get Keith Moon’s contributions to binge drinking and smashing things, but godamn his drumming is annoying. Blap blap blap didida didida didida pow pow pow. Basically non-stop fills for an hour like a hyperactive toddler. Pop pop pop blam blam ba-blam boom. Also only the extended version was available to stream, and this somewhat confusingly puts the objectively worse extra stuff at the start of the album. This batshit move raised my rating from 1 to 2.
I don't like live albums and this was two whole hours long... I didn't even like the style that much...
Not live, please.
I usually prefer the sound quality of studio albums over live ones, but this does highlight that 1970's Who must have been quite awesome to see! I've never been a Who fan, and unfortunately nothing here won me over 2/5
Very rock n roll. I dont have much experience w the who. Except who are you. Radek was rocking to it which was adorbs
Toxic masculinity is very unflattering.
I didn’t know Magic Bus was one of their bigger songs
Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think a live album is a good way to hear songs for the first time. I just didn’t connect with this.
i don’t want to listen to this whole thing. i got through about half. it’s SILLY. these are not serious people. it combines the worst parts of 70s rock music and the worst parts of musical theatre into a single maelstrom of drudgery.
Their sound was much harder and more metal-adjacent than I remembered? Maybe I just never heard it because I'd never heard this live album or a live performance. I guess I see in that sense how they're influential on future music movements and they've very talented instrumentalists. However I enjoyed it even less than I thought I would (which is saying something).
Man i keep giving The Who a try and i get nothing from them. Couple cool riffs here and there, rhythm section is rad but the vocals and lyrics just don't connect with me. 2 stars!
(1.5) wasn’t a huge fan
Live albums are not a great introduction point for people not familiar with a band
(Listened to Expanded Edition.) Some groovy sections, but … not great as a whole. Would probably mainly listen to the [presumably] expanded bits at the end of the live album in the future.
Blergh. This didn't change my mind about The Who. I 10,000% did not need to hear this. Switched to High on Fire halfway through to clear the dust and cobwebs that this album was leaving behind.
I'm starting to get the feeling this is going to be hard work. I'm sure this is great for people who like this kind of rock, I'm really not keen unfortunately. There's great songs on there but I find it tedious and tiring.
meh, I honestly think the only live album I ever really liked was Cheap Trick's Live at Buddakan
Struggled to get through this. Self-indulgent and meandering. Sounds more like a Led Zep knockoff in places. Often veers into what sounds like the three of them soloing without really listening to what each other is doing. Odd choice of material, too. Not sure why it enjoys the reputation it does.
The drumming is the star here. It engulfs everything in a thunderstorm of cymbal crashes and void-filling fills. That and the lyrics to the track Tattoo "Rooty-doot-toot tattoo". Aside from that I'm not the biggest fan of The Who but they definitely come alive in these live recordings - it's like this is how they are meant to be heard. Substitute is a banger, but some of the songs (Happy Jack/I'm a boy) are awful.
So unforgettable. I can appreciate and sorta understand the appeal for this music but I had such higher hopes. I felt like most the time they were just taking the piss and fucking around. Corny asf lyrics and just doing unfunny voices that just came across annoying. It wasn’t completely terrible tbh the instrumentals were insane I do appreciate and respect this time period for that. Also why did he start talking about a “funny” story about a pedofile😭. The Who has disappointed me with Shakin All Over and even that was still like 7/10. Damn I didn’t want to dislike it but I have to give it a 4.4/10 2.2/5
abbastanza ripetitivo
There’s a ‘you had to be there’ element that is difficult to overcome as first time listener in this our year of the lord 2025. It feels soaked in nostalgia for a benighted period in which a bunch of white British guys could pretend to be Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry and be taken seriously. As a modern listener, it’s just corny and almost a caricature of its influences. A poor copy. That being said, Pete Townsend’s guitar work here is nice to listen to and Keith Moon’s drumming is just a perfect harmony to the vibe. Vocals and melodies are mid, friends.
it’s a no for me
Hard to listen to without being influenced by years of copyists. I'm sure it was a great live concert experience. However I don't have time for this now.
Low 2 Best song: the ones from the first album Most of this is hard rock at its most generic im afraid. We dont need a drum fill every bar keith. Bonus points for how lovely and polite the boys seem in between songs
Stop with the live albums jfc
The who had some iconic songs, but does a live album deserve to be here? Very few live albums (see: johnny cash's folsom prison) are anything outstanding. Didn't know most of the first half. 2* Highlights: happy jack
It's just The Who live.. what's so special? Doesnt even sound good... Best track - Substitute 2 stars
Decent live album, has good energy but the recording quality is lacking. I'd probably rather just listen to a studio album with the same stuff but I do appreciate the energy of the live recording
Who's great, and live recordings have their charm.
Not massive on The Who, not massive on live albums - outside of all-time famous live performances. So yeah
Live music doesn't always sound good on an album. Prime example. Great memories if you were there, just a mis-aligned noise if you weren't.
Not a huge live album person, and while like some of The Who’s stuff, not a hardcore enough of a fan to get a lot of their references or commentary.
Nicht so meins “Basico rock music” 5/10
absolutely not.
I mean, I liked this, but, I have an issue with live albums on here unless they're more than 50 percent originals.
I like The Who but found this album underwhelming. These shows (two, on back-to-back nights) were set up specifically to record a live album and it totally feels like it. It's much more like they're playing live-in-studio than actually playing for an audience; almost like the crowd was instructed to sit quietly and only clap between songs. Technically, this album is a masterclass for how to mic a live band for recording - and they do sound great - but the record feels so soulless. For something that's been called 'the best live album ever recorded', I expected more. It's not "Frampton Comes Alive!" or Thin Lizzy's "Live & Dangerous", but if you're a fan of The Who and well-mannered British concert goers, this one is for you!
Live albums are not my thing. I’m sure it’s one experience to be there or even watch on tv, but another completely to just listen to monologues with no visual aids.
Live at Leeds by The Who packs raw energy and power, but as someone who’s not into live recordings, I just couldn’t really connect with the songs
This is a live album. It is a great live recording. It is, however, live recordings of existing material - primarily Tommy - which is better. This isn't required listening. Not going to listen/rate. Pitchfork: Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #327
Apparently there are few live albums on this list which I fully support. I don't really understand why this one is included. Maybe there are too many virtuosic parts being played simultaneously but much of this just sounds chaotic to me. I do have a soft spot for Can't Explain but it wasn't even on the original release of this album. I had Nobody's Perfect, a live album by Deep Purple, when I was younger and I think that album is way better than this one.
solid classic rock album but i just didn't come into the right mood for that one.
Another live album. Still not a fan of them. Just look at My Generation to see why. The song itself is a great song. But this live version goes on way too long, with the whole medley at the end. Same with Magic Bus, just keeps dragging on. It would have been a blast to hear live, but not a recording of live music. Best song: Summertime Blues
not my fav but easy
I like the guitar. The drums. The vocals and lyrics are not my favorite based on the first song so far. I had to skip it. I know it’s live but they just kept going. Okay I like the sound of the second one a lot. It’s giving Beatles and god I can’t put my finger on the other type of sound it is reminding me of. It reminds me of that seen of the dancing in socks and underwear from that one movie shoot I’m so bad at explaining things. I liked the second song. Nothing else so far.
I don't know why but I just don't like the who
RIP the legend the goat keith moon but homie why is this on here… 2
Live albums blow.
As the first Who full album project I hear in this list, I ask: why? Lots of artists that did not get a spot in the list and instead we get this truncated live experience, and 4 other Who studio albums? It's a no for me.
Jam muziek
I like The Who but damned if I can figure out what makes this particular album a standout.
They’ve never clicked for me. I was quite bored
It’s weird to me when a live album makes this kind of list. This one in particular felt like nothing super fantastic.
There is much better stuff from the WHO.
I don’t like live albums
It’s not great is it? Substitute which is one of my favourite Who songs is rubbish and the covers are piss poor! Won’t be playing this one again anytime soon, or ever probably!
3/10
The music is a bit whatever - I've never really been into The Who. Downvoted by a star because I generally dislike live albums. Controversial opinion, but I don't think any live albums should feature on this list
Found this album kinda boring, I didn't really like their style of music and i don't like live versions of song either, they are always really quiet and the crowd normally turns it for me.
Well it's definitely not for me. I don't know what it is, but classic rock like this always sounds the same to me - really boring. Unfortunately I think a lot of the 1001 albums are going to be like this.
Didn't listen all the way through. Including a live album on the list is a weird choice IMO
Often described as one of the greatest live albums of all time. Wasn't feeling it to be honest, some obvious highlights but overall just ok
Meh
Good but didn't wow me
*Enjoyable but not memorable and wouldn’t listen again. RATING - 5/10
4/10 Every song sounds incohesive, sounds like they gave some kindergarteners equipment and told them "play anything" while some old man sings
I am not a fan of live albums of songs I’ve never heard before. 13 minute song of barely talking, no thanks.
Well. Many skips. Sorry.
Don't like live albums
Meh
Bad start, good end.
I'm not generally a fan of live albums, and that proved to be the case with this album. There were too many very long songs that sounded vaguely the same and, as I told Jill, it started to sound like just lots of banging and "noise" rather than music.
A live album from them and an era of The Who I find less enjoyable than some later albums. A 3 down to a 2.5 because I'm grumpy about live albums.
Dad- 4 Mom- 7 Mike- 5 Lori- 5.5 Michael-3 Miles- NA Cole- NA Avg- 4.9
I do not understand having a live album of previous material on this list. Are we rating their performance (which are often augmented….as was this version ) or are we rating the songs or what? I Iike The Who. I like some of these songs but do not get why this album is on the list.
The Who at their most boring, bombastic and lumbering. It's still the Who, but not an album that I ever reach for.
Meh. Better in the studio.
I don’t like many live recordings. The Who have some good songs, but this live performance is not for me. As Zack says, this might have been one of those had to be there kinda shows.
I do not like the clapping, or the spoken words bits, but that is to be expected from a live album.
I was expecting to like this, but I really didn’t. I then realized a bunch of songs were added into the expanded version that weren’t great. I’m sure the concert would have been fun, though.
I don't really think a live album should have made it in here. It was fine but I'm confident a studio recording would have been better.
Live version of what is already pretty ragged rock largely missed the mark for me . I haven’t heard of them before so maybe if I had some familiar id feel different
Meh
Slow almost classic rock feel. Drums sound amazing and very prodominant through every song. Songs feel long and a slug to get through
Eh
It was alright, not a fan of live albums though. Difficult to make out the vocals, instruments aren't balanced. It's like the sonic equivalent of taking a picture at a concert, it just doesn't do it justice.
Hard to appreciate a live album from a band I've only ever heard a few singles from - will try to revisit
Do we need this?
Sadly average.
This was cool basically what I expected. Some solid songs done pretty well live. 7/10
I have always wanted to like The who but just can’t get there even with this live album. You can definitely feel the dynamism of the band and I did enjoy the cover songs.
Always feels like a mixture of Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead. Those are two groups I don't really enjoy. The contributions from each comparative item are actually the parts of their respective bands I don't enjoy. There's a lil Beatles in there too. Also, not the good parts.
Live mixing has come a long way
I just got the Who’s first studio album a few days ago. That makes sense to be on the list, so not sure why this needed to be included as well. 2⭐️
I’d really like it if they stopped pushing the Who on me- they’re not good. Also, live albums don’t really belong.
It's as poorly recorded and tracked as any live 70s album. Blah
Not my favorite kind of classic rock. There are a few bops in here but it's not to my taste so far. "I Can't Explain" is decent. The song Tattoo sucks. Also not into Young Man's Blues (lyrics are alright). Happy Jack is fine. I don't hate this outright but it feels very much like a 2 star album.
Nothing against the Who but I don't really get all that much out of actually listening to them
I am a certified The Who fan. I loved The Who Sell Out. I think Tommy is one of the greatest musical innovations in the last century. However, I'm also a certified live album hater. Live at Leeds is certainly better than other live albums, but I still don't think it needs to be on this list.
We got a live one here. The Who does sound pretty good on this album and I like that it was a kinda impromptu show at a university. Would have been pretty awesome to catch. Always like "Magic Bus" and the extended mixed live version is top track. Only six songs on the original album so for this shorty show, I give Leeds 1.75 stars.
As much as I'm a fan of The Who, I'm not sure they need 4 albums on this list. Especially when one of them is a live album without anything really new to offer. You get an alternate side of the The Who from a live standpoint, but I found most of the album rather pedestrian. The Who has a reputation for their live shows due to smashing guitars and claiming the title of "loudest band" but Live At Leeds doesn't do much to transport me there. It's got a couple of good cuts, and at 30 minutes is a pretty decent listen. However, it's just another live album on this list that would be better used elsewhere. 2.28 stars
Oh great another shitty live album that’s on here because the author got an unenthusiastic handjob behind the portaloos at the concert it was recorded at. I don’t even want to listen to studio albums by the literally who let alone 77 minutes of live dreck. Waste of a slot fuck off.
I like The Who but my lord this was just a nothing album. After coming off probably one of the best live performances I have ever heard (Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert) I get to listen to one of the most mid experiences ever. It is undoubtably energetic and captures an image of the band at the peak of their success after Tommy and a moment in time for Hard Rock as a genre. However, I think the album It's Hard (despite being shit) had more of a cultural impact purely due to Eminence Front being in the soundtrack for both GTA: San Andreas and Law Abiding Citizen. I don't have a problem with live albums, but I have a problem when I need to constantly go back to check how long is left on an album that is only 37 minutes. Highlights: My Generation
6/10 Highlights: Young Man Blues A Quick One, While He's Away
⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 32 The Who…again?!? No joke here, receiving back to back Who albums from this generator and already the third since I started the project and I’m only 32 albums in LOL What is with all The Who love anyway? A band that I could care less for combined with this being a live album, which rarely sound half decent to me, how could it miss the mark?? Well my assumptive assertions proved affirmative, as this is yet another overblown “best live album of all-time” claim, following the laughable suggestions that surrounded Cheap Trick’s At Budokan that I had to previously endure on this list. Sure the band sounds good when they are sticking to playing their actual set, however the exhaustive drawn out banter from Daltrey between songs is very trying. 🎧 Classic Track: Magic Bus 🚫 Skip Track: My Generation- a 15 minute rendition of this classic track?!? WE GET IT! 🖼️ Album Artwork: At least it is not another lame photo of the band! Leave it to The Who that with only 6 tracks they still fail to stick the landing on a complete album. This one also contains renditions of other musicians songwriting, aforementioned bloated cuts and distracting stage antics. If the band would have stuck to focusing on their own original compositions and musicianship, then perhaps this would be worthy of the praise it receives. Possibly the best live album of its time, however nowhere close to being the best ever recorded. Those that insist should listen to the myriad of deluxe editions that have been put out and thank the sound editors for scaling this way way down. Hit the thumbs up icon below if you enjoyed my hot take on the album :)
Not really a fan of this live album seems to be very right channel dominant so couldn’t really hear it
There's nothing I can point out thats bad, but I'm just not jelling with it. 2-3 stars, won't listen to it again.
I like the Who in general, mostly popular songs, but this particular album - not so much
The Who? More like Who Cares…. just kidding. This was mid though. That song about being a man was bad.
Meh. Pretty consistent for a live album, I guess
Thought I’d hate this but it wasn’t all that bad. Couldn’t be bothered to do the whole thing but got an idea and listened to their terribly-aging best song.
A lumbering drunken ox of a rock n roll band. Don’t like them at all. Two stars for being not shitty prog or rap metal.
Its a good live album, but definitely not The Who's best. I don't think this should be on this list.
I really don't care to listen to a live album. Also, I hate a long ass album. Boo 2/5
Barely listened to this album. I’m familiar with The Who but have never been a huge fan. Not bad music just not what I was feeling yesterday.
Good stuff
I know where Leeds is!!!!! Lol. It was ok, seemed like a bunch of little boys making the most basic rock and roll ever. And like I get it, gotta pay respect to the first, that paved the way for others to follow. They walked so others could run. It's just a little bland because I'm used to more. like asking someone that's used to driving a new Tesla to drive a 1920's car. There will just simply be a distaste for the ancient, basic version of something. It's hard to get used to. Cultural relativity and all that.
Not a huge fan of the live recording stuff.
I think this is the fourth or fifth Who album I've come across on this list and don't think this one is necessary to include. The banter between songs was not adding to the experience in a positive way and some of the songs went on too long
fine but not for me
you guys sure like the who
why live albums?
Loved the who in middle school, maybe it was just the hits but live at leeds did not do it for me.
Can’t.
