Reviews (page 11 of 12)
Very dull. Just like actual The Who live.
I generally like the Who, but I’m also not much of a fan of live albums. This is no exception.
Eh, I liked their other music better
I've tried and tried to love The Who. I just don't. No idea why.
Just not a live album Larry 2/5
Pretty mid
Shoulda stuck to their tradition and named this Who's Mess. Good Lord. Daltrey's the best part of the live act and spends more time shaking a tambourine than singing. Townsend - a brilliant songwriter and rhythm guitarist - is a mediocre soloist and singer but spends a lot of time here doing both. Entwistle and Moon sound like they're each playing just beyond their ability, and don't sound like they're listening to anyone, let alone each other. The clear takeaway from this listening experience is: Led Zeppelin was an amazing band.
Yeah I don't get this. It's a perfectly well recorded live performance. What's so special about it though. The band sound good? They're professionals, what do you expect. Not really impressed. The covers of Summertime Blues and Shakin All Over aren't good. 2 Stars.
The best parts of the album is w/o vocals. Why is this live album on the list. Home cooking, etc.
This kinda sucked, and I like The Who, a lot even. Out of all the Who records to pick this one is close to the bottom. Keith Moon goes hard on this, but he does on every studio album too which all sound better than this. The mix isn’t even that bad, it’s just worse than all the studio ones. The medley towards the end is cool but you could just listen to all the songs instead; the links between them all don’t add much.
Okay, but certainly not particularly worth listening to. This is one of those concerts that you only listen to at a festival if you happen to be there. 2.5/5
Not my thing. Not super interesting music to me, kinda all sounds the same.
It is becoming apparent that I just don't give a shit about, like, 70% of music, but oh well, the point of living is experiencing new things as far as I can tell, so I'll keep on moving
Only fair in comparison to the masterpiece Who’s Next.
warum live ?
I like The Who but this is just meh. Sounds like your average dad rock concert. Don’t get me wrong, live albums are cool even though majority of reviews are saying live albums suck. That’s just not true. However, this one is boring.
In my opinion, a live album has to be really special to deserve a place on this list. This album was not. Drums were neat, though. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
Meh
Starts with a very familiar riff somehow. But good. Energetic. Live albums can be hit-and-miss, at least this one is intelligible. Too long, though. 2.5 stars, but rounded down.
I still don’t approve of live albums being on her since they can be combinations of other albums. This one is no different. Honestly The Who growing up was a household name and they are very talented muscians but this live album just sounded the same and very similar to a bunch of other artists of the time. Now the other artists most likely were mimicing The Who but doesn’t matter in the grand scope of music of the age sounding alike. 4/10
Just not really my vibe
It was okay - still doesn't really compute that the guys who made this music were like smashing guitars and inviting mayhem
I'm a HUGE fan of The Who. But I don't think this particular album deserves inclusion on this list. The quality is meh. The live aspect of this didn't do much to add or detract from the songs I already know and love. It was a fine album but if we're trying to get the 1,000 albums you must listen to...this one is a skip.
I don’t love live albums, and found this one to be fairly mundane without any particular draw. Much as love The Who, this one did not do it for me.

W tym czasie można by przesłuchać dwa dobre albumy.

No doubt these guys made great music. But live albums aren't for me.
Not very into this
long, never been the biggest on the who but it was decent
Ok live album.
Зачем здесь лайв?
Not to be a Scrooge on this Christmas 2024 but this is a near-inexcusable placement on this 1001 albums list thats only barely redeemed by the energized live instrumentation. Because, respectfully, the vocals aren’t there. At all.
I used to love these guys
Oh, fuck off with the goddamned live albums. I'm not a groupie traversing the US in search of the perfect permutation of a Grateful Dead track, I want to listen to a thousand genre defining albums. This is just wank. "Uh, we'd like to carry on [...] quite what that means I don't know"- Fuck you, and fuck your meandering 15 minute version of decent tracks. I like The Who, but I want to listen to the best version of their tracks - and live shit is just never gonna cut it.
I love The Who but this is just another live album and I can't see how this is better than a studio album?
Live albums do not deserve a place on here! If I want to here people screaming I’d go to the concert.
I still don't understand the concept of live albums, I'd rather listen to a studio version of it.
Don’t understand why I’m listening to a live album, don’t really understand what’s special about it. It’s fine with the medley being my favourite journey but why wouldn’t I just listen to the studio records?
Live albums are whack.
Meh
This album was fine. A lot of songs went on for too long. I feel like in most cases I'd rather listen to the studio versions than the live ones. I was entertained, but I will probably not be returning to this album. Especially with "My Generation," the studio version of that song is shorter and way more interesting. Liked songs: "Heaven And Hell" , "I Can't Explain" , "Young Man Blues" , and "Substitute"
I really despise live albums. I don't want to hear cheering, I want to hear the music. So many hits and definitely a progressive band for the time. I find some of the harmonies awkward.
Kein Fan von Livealben und die Musik auch nicht überragend.
Live alben haben selten einen Mehrwert für mich. In diesem Fall auch nicht. Songs der Playlist hinzugefügt: Keine
Live albums, to make up for the shittier sound quality, off pitch singing, and unbalanced mixing, have to be incredible in some other way to be considered great. I didn’t think that was the case here. My generation medley was the closest thing to greatness but it was slow and dull.
Is this the fourth time The Who or the third? I don't care, this shouldn't be here.
The Who es alta banda pero este disco tiene una calidad de grabación pésima, se escucha muy mal y también son eternos los temas.
Cool. More 70s rock. C’mon, man. The new Kendrick Lamar dropped yesterday and I have to listen to this trash. FML. It’s whatever. Watered down classic rock.
Have you listened to the who? This is a who album... Sept live
This is the first live album I've gotten and I don't care for it. Maybe if you're a fan of the artist all the talking is interesting, but for me it was entirely too much yapping. The music was okay, fairly standard rock. Nothing really stood out to me. With a point docked for being live, I'll score it a 2/5
Don't really care for the Tommy tracks live
I'm just into live albums
I like The Who but there is nothing special about this live album to warrant it being on this list imo
It’s just alright. Nothing worth revisiting
I think this is the kind of thing I don't get simply because I'm not a huge fan of hard rock of this type to begin with, it's the sort of bluesy, heavy thing that doesn't excite me or interest me just by virtue of having an overdriven guitar and a mean attitude. It just comes off as kind of basic and plain to me which is never interesting or fun to me. I can get how this can excite someone else but personally it really doesn't do it for me, and it's even weirder because I generally enjoy Hard Rock but I guess the way The Who does it simply isn't my cup of tea compared to other hard rock that came later
I enjoy listening to The Who on an occasional basis, and enjoyed the previous album I listened to in this collection ("Who's Next"), but this really didn't do much for me, despite all the accolades as it being one of the best live albums of all time. I also feel like there's simply too many Who albums in this project (5 total), and this definitely doesn't need to be there. I didn't listen to the whole Leeds/Hull playlist from later releases of this album, so maybe it gets better when you get the whole concert, but aside from hearing their enjoyable single "Substitute" I didn't really find much of the album distinctive or particularly interesting or even all that well-recorded, although "Shakin' all over" is probably the closest you get to getting a feel for how good their live shows were, and moments of the extended "My generation" are fun. I guess you really *did* have to be there, sadly.
Sounds the same.
no my style
I thought that it was engaging, especially for a live album. I enjoyed listening to it for the sound, but couldn’t tell you any of the songs. There were times driving around where I tried to listen to the words, but with the quality it’s much more difficult to understand them. High 2 or a low 3. We’ll go 2.
It was alright I guess. I'm realizing now that there are about 6 or 7 The Who songs that I like, and I like the studio version more. Just give me a greatest hits compilation.
Can’t deny that The Who played with incredible energy which this album captures better than a lot of their recorded material. That said, I find many of the songs kind of corny and some of the tracks like ‘Fortune Teller’ and ‘Tattoo’ were genuinely hard to get through. Pete Townshend’s muscular guitar tone and tight rhythm playing is the best part of this album. The story in the middle about the girl guide seduced by a train engineer was uncomfortable and out of context considering most of Roger Daltry’s banter has a polite English gentleman vibe. Keith Moon was a pioneer but his actual drumming on this album is an endless wall of cymbals and about a million too many sloppy tom fills. Probably won’t ever listen to this again.
I prefer studio albums but some live albums are better than studio so take that for what it's worth....
Didn’t really rate this one. Heard better.
more like The Who Cares 4/10 (that drumming fucking carries!!)
Agree. Could’ve been a 1001 concert, but it’s not a 1001 album.
Listening them on a Live album, is even more strenuous than listening to them on a Studio album.
Very generous 2. Just don’t get why people rate these guys so highly.
This is a very highly regarded live album, often touted as one of the greatest live albums and a recording of a band at the peak of their power. My streaming service doesn't have the original 6-track version, but a longer 14 track version. All in all I think this album falls very much short of its reputation as a great (the greatest?) live album. And in that respect I doubt it really ought to be on this list of 1001 albums - I reckon that some of The Who's studio albums are way better than this.
Není můj šálek kávy. 5/10
I liked the energy in the start of the album. But it soon turned into too much of the same. The drumming was fantastic though.
found this a bit underwhelming. it's a two for the who
My old chum Oxley used to play the drums for this lot. Noisy from what I remember. Awful hotel guests
Live albums seldom do anything for me and this is no exception
Good start and end but a lot of middle. Listened to the deluxe version and feel the who had some major hits but plenty I've never heard of for a reason maybe.
I like the Who. I love live music. I generally hate live albums. This isn't an exception.
Nothing particularly exciting.
Just not a fan of the who. This album was just generic 70s rock. Decent energy but nothing stood out.
No way this is the first album of the Who that you suggests, I'm not going to listen to a live album
Another live double album. I'm getting tired of writing the same review. If you don't like the band already, a live double album is not going to resonate.
Though I am trying to keep an open mind regarding my journey... this is the 3rd The Who album within the first 100 albums I am listening to, and truth be told, I am getting a little bored with The Who. Thus, considering that the link to Spotify made me listen to an expanded version, I'd rather have listened to the original 5-6 odd tracks on the album. And while we are on it, why is this album considered one of the best live albums ever? From a production standpoint, I will agree that it was very well recorded, so good job there. But I'd rather listen to Jimmy Hendrix live, or Clapton, or Queen, or something else... Here's me waiting for the 1001 journey to start amazing me again...
I like the who but didn’t know any of these songs. Guess I don’t like them THAT much
álbum ao vivo ? ha para ne
Yeah, this is just really boring to me. 2/5
too high energy for me
The Who doesn't do much for me outside of a handful of tracks (mostly just Eminence Front), so while this wasn't *awful*, it wasn't super pleasant. Cash at Folsom was a much more interesting live listen. Respect for the My Generation medley though, it was a pretty alright jam.
Live Who is considerably more abusive than studio Who.
just not a live album person and this didn’t make me think wow the who must be so great live. but I’m sure they are for people who like the who ❤️
unmemorable 2/5
Never listened to this before. Wasn't a fan of The Who this early in their career. Interesting as a historical record, wonder if there is videos from the performances. 2 stars
live alben iwie unnötig
I like the Who , but a live album is like a handjob on your honeymoon.
As many reviews have already said, why is there a live album on this list? I love the who, but I don’t need to hear them at a concert covering songs??
Ja tätä pidetään yhtenä parhaista livelevyistä? Hm. Ei ainakaan alkuperäisen julkaisun perusteella nouse omilla listoilla kovin korkealle.
I like The Who but this live album ain’t it
This one was hard for me. I found a few songs I like, but for the most part, the music feels fussy and convoluted. Getting into the music was hard for me, and the sheer volume of songs was oppressive.
Føler jeg høre den samme sang hele tiden - det er svært at skelne dem fra hinanden. Samme tempo på det hele.... Men det kan fint køre i baggrunden hos mig som baggrundsstøj. 2/5
I'm not really a fan of live albums, so that already puts a negative angle on this from the get-go. I don't think a single song really stood out to me through the entire album. Mostly it was just noise or faded into the background 2/5
Not a fan of live albums.
Pretty good, I'm just honestly not a huge fan of The Who.
As a person who seems incapable of connecting with the music of the Who, this album eluded me as well. I like live albums, but this one didn’t connect. 2/5
Albums like this are exactly why I typically dislike live albums. The audio balancing feels so off. The guitar and vocals get washed out by the drums and everything sounds extra distorted. Production value aside, the rock is decent. Some fun guitar riffs and proficient drums. The vocals are kind of bland to me. I listened to the expanded edition and grew tired of it by the end.
We've heard some good Who albums, and we've heard some good live albums. This was neither, I'd say. I imagine the live act was great, but I didn't feel it so much on this recording.
I have no idea why this album was on the list. Sure, it was pretty good energy, but it didn't do much for me at all frankly. Not game changing by any means in my opinion.
I like The Who, but I don't like live albums and I don't understand why there are so many on the list. The first one I got was Deep Purple's 'Made In Japan'—I rated it 1.5 since it was an absolute drag to get through—but this album is at least well-produced so I'll give it a 2.5. I really don't get the appeal of listening to a live album when there are both polished studio albums and actual clips of performances available online. 2.5 stars 'cause at least they're good performers.
For The Who- fans this must be a worship. But I´m not so convinced with their music in special and with live-albums in general. The harmonica on the last track secures this album the second star. 1,5
No thanks. 2.07 per track
Are live concert albums always worse than studio albums? I'm not sure, but the 1001 albums have taught me that outside of Who's Next, I don't like much of what The Who have to offer. This live album exacerbated the issue, I was not impressed. The album also didn't feel mixed super well. The audience talk portions were hard for me to follow.
The Who always sound like 3 blokes who all want to be the star. John Entwhistle is a cool bass player, but often sounds like he's competing with everyone to see who can play the most notes. Hits are good, covers are bog average. minus 1 for a live album, that shouldn't be allowed.
Not as good as The Who On Ice
They are better live than on the radio. Still not my fave 😂
It’s okay
i just don’t care
This is the third album so far from The Who and I think my opinion on this band has settled into a “meh”. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Shakin’ All Over Rating: 2
I get it I do but I couldn’t get enough into it even after trying to re-listen. I appreciate their energy in the live however I wouldn’t want to return to the album, I was a bit bored after a bit.
It's OK, but not served well by being a live album.
ok
I like a live album in general, but this one stands nowhere near the great live albums. It seems pedestrian, and that's before you get to the shit about the mini-opera which feels incredibly dated 50 years later. Certainly this is nowhere near the class of the Sam Cooke live album and goes to show just how patchy some of the "great" albums from the 60s and early 70s are.
it's good live blusey psych rock, but nothing i haven't heard other places many times before.
I quite like some Who stuff and I also find some of their stuff quite annoying. I had read years ago this was "the best live album ever". The Who are certainly competent at what they do, it just never particularly excites me. It's decent enough.
Guess you had to be there. After hearing so much about this performance/album for so many years, I was eager to finally take role time to listen. Not coming into this as a fan of The Who, and not exiting as a fan either. Mediocre live recording (granted maybe best available in the 70s) of a concert that, to the uninitiated listener, does not sound momentous nor historic.
Live at Leeds presents The Who's iconic songs in a live setting, but falls short of capturing the band's full live impact. While there are notable tracks on the album, the live performances lack the punch and cohesion found in their studio recordings. The inclusion of medleys feels disjointed and disrupts the flow of the album. Despite these shortcomings, Keith Moon's enigmatic drumming style adds a unique element to the live experience. I guess you just had to be there to fully get this. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 2 STAND OUT TRACK - I Can't Explain
The Who has fine musical chops, but they’re not exactly Keats. I just don’t get the hype
The Who is who they are. Good music but never been a big fan.
Didn’t really do anything for me
I'm a fan of The Who and have seen them live before and thought they put on a great show. With that being said, I just don't think this album is interesting enough to have made this list. The selling point here is that you get a time capsule into one of the biggest UK classic rock bands, from before they wrote some of their biggest songs ("Baba O'Riley", "Who Are You", "Won't Get Fooled Again", etc.) You can either choose to listen to the entire extended edition that's available on streaming platforms or pick out the 6 songs that made the original track listing (check Wikipedia for that) to save yourself about 40 minutes. Somewhat bizarrely, of the original 6 song track listing, 3 songs are covers. And the song most people are going to recognise ("My Generation") becomes a tedious jam/medley session that goes on for close to 15 minutes. I'm very unlikely to ever revisit this album and so for that reason, it gets a 2/5 from me.
Last thing I needed on a stressy Monday morning. 15 minute medley of ‘My Generation’? No thanks.
Nah, not for me.
Meh, I mean I’ve never been able to click with the Who, a lot of songs about trying to be a man or something.
shit boring as fuck
I'm not really into The Who and I'm not really into live albums.
Just not my favorite Who album...
Decent album. Nice listen. Bit boring 2.4
It was good but nothing I’d go back searching for again!
Giving this a 2 cause it's an unremarkable live album
Live-optræden, rock med lidt psyk, ikke sikker på at live gør det bedre
I do not get why live albums that have songs from a number of other albums by the same artist are even on this list.
mmmm no me gustó mucho salvo una canción xd
It's OK for what it is, the best live album ever? No. I was entranced by Roger Daltry's monologues in between the songs, rather than the songs themselves, which is a bit of a worry. But I did like some of Townsend's guitar work. So a mid 2.
I love the Who but.... this live album was not for me.
this rendition of my generation is too damn long oh my god.. also nothing about this album really intrigued me too much. they seem like cool dudes but the music is not very interesting. I also like how you can tell from the cheering that the audience is British lmaoooo
I like the explanation of the songs, but 2 songs combined should not be close to 30 minutes. I don’t want to hear a story in half an hour. I would want it to be in <7 minutes
Eh, didn't really like. Not sure this album really had a chance with me cause I don't normally like live albums all that much so maybe that should be taken into consideration when viewing my review. They sounded pretty good instrumentation wise but I could not understand about 80% of what was being sung. Also fun little trivia, Green Day did a cover of "A Quick One, While He's Away" on 21st Century Breakdown. I thought it was a weird and strangely long song when I first heard them do it and I think it is just as weird and even longer upon hearing the original live.
Another who album that is too long. I don’t mind some of their songs but damn can they be long. I do normally like a live album however I think that’s because I normally know the album before hand and then it’s just a fun new version. However this was just a longer more boring version of what I assume to be an alright album originally
Great atmosphere in this live album. Decent playing. But it is a live album soooooo
Pls stop giving me with live albums
There's quite a few The Who tracks that I like, but I hate live albums. There's very few live albums that actually work, as far as I'm concerned. This isn't really one of them. It's not bad for the most part, but it's certainly not good.
Live music > recorded music. Recorded albums > live albums.
the 3rd album by The Who in 97 days and as shit as the rest, worse in fact due to no Pinball Wizard.
This didn't get me quite as much as the other stuff from The Who I've listened to. Maybe because it's live?
An iconic progressive rock band but this was not one of their better album releases. Their studio recordings coming later were much stronger.
This absolutely riled me. Disgusting paedophilic songs about train drivers seducing girl guides, who might I am are 14 and below and "seducing and fornicating". The live geers from the crowd made me so angry and disgusted. I'm not sure this as a live album added anything. So distracted by this struggled to care about the rest of it
# Playlist track - Happy Jack # Notes - I don't really understand the role of this album in the list. - This isn't a really interesting compilation, nor a particularly good recording for me. - Not recommended.
Can't stand live albums.
Meh
No me gustan las grabaciones en vivo.
Perfectly fine. If you love The Who I’m sure this hits deeply. I can enjoy two or three of their songs before I need some variety. Not sure if this is an essential live album. Anyway I wouldn’t be mad if somebody played this but I won’t ever choose to listen to it again. 2.5/5
Why another live album!? The 15 minute version of My Generation didn't help either. I'm sure it was great to see it live but not with headphones in an office.
The vocals were lost in the version
A Quick One, While He's Away - Live
live albums just aren't very good
Too long n too bland, not for me. Some cheeky lyrics which are fun but otherwise just not something I'm gonna get into. One and a half. Fave track: Shakin' All Over
Some classic songs in there I couldn’t help but feel a bit detached from. Thought I’d like it more. Two and a half. Fave track: A Quick One, While He’s Away
Often cited as one of the greatest live rock albums of all time up there with Deep Purple and the Allman Brothers Band and yet I've never listened to it before. Must say I was rather disappointed, quite a shambles overall.
Okay
Nicht mein Fall.
A couple of solid hots but a lot of filler too.
I liked the sound of this (very lofi and garage) but I guess sits because of the recording xD I didn't like the actual songs that much
Live
Not sure why this one is on here. Live albums probably shouldn’t be on the list. I prefer the studio recording for almost all of these songs. My Generation and Magic Bus are pretty good though.
Not a big fan of live vinyls
I'm generally not a big fan of live albums, and this one did nothing to change my mind.
lässt mich kalt
eh
naja
just kinda like old school rockish type stuff its prob good but also ive heard its like a lot so kinda boring idk
Fine background music. Nothing stood out. 2/5
Ugh another live album. This one definitely would have benefited from the polish of the studio. Some decent songs on here but they sound kind of terrible. I like the Who, I don’t like this live album
Meh
Is this only influential because it's an early live album? Great... not sure if I like the concept of live albums as a whole anyways.
Not near as good as the studio versions but definitely would have been a concert worth going to back in the day
Hatar live album
Not my jam . Two stars for creating music.
I hate live albums
Definitely not the best live album I've ever heard
Hmm I guess I don’t like the who as much as I thought I would. Music wasnt bad tho just not something I would put on often. Maybe some other time I will appreciate it more
Not bad, good energy. I’d give it 2.5 if I could but I just wasn’t a fan.
It was alright. I'm not a huge fan of live albums, and I'm not a big Who guy. I'd probably give it a middle of the road 2.5/5 because it did have a couple of moments. Nothing added.
90 minutes of The Who live.
I'm no fan of live albums being on this list, but I recognise that this is often seen as a classic of the genre. That said, a handful of covers and not exactly a tight performance doesn't make me think this is all I was led to believe.
Not quite sure why that album made the list of 1001 albums I needed to hear before I die, honestly. Nothing against The Who, I'm looking forward to listening to their other albums on this list, and I'm sure going to one of their shows in their heyday must have been a great experience, but listening to this 53 years after the concert, this is pretty much an ordinary live album, featuring the usual selection of songs I could hear a much better version of on their studio albums. I'm sure there is some historical context explaining why this live album was important at the time, but as it stands now, it wasn't particularly interesting to listen to.
long!
The fact that it is a live album immediately takes away points as some songs go on too long which is great when live but gets repetitive listening at home, also dont need to hear the talking and audience between songs. Guitar and drums are great and generally solid sound/vibe but nothing that really grabs me. Think I would enjoy it a lot more in a studio version so looking forward to other The Who albums. For example, My Generation: really like the studio version but just sounded off here.
It's not even a live album. Everyone went back in and overdubbed their parts. It does capture the energy to a degree. But there's never been a band drop off as hard as the Who after their first run of singles, which are so good they've allowed them to coast on in mediocrity for the 50 years since.
I hate live albums unless I really like the band. Drumming was fantastic though.
Concerts are amazing for a good amount of reasons. You are sharing the space with more fans, the atmosphere, the emotion of being there, witnessing the delivery, etc... Many of them are not enjoyable in a live album. And what is more, it is not an original composition. When an album is tailored, a message and a coherence are implemented, which is lost and reinterpreted when creating a set list for a concert. Plus, the concert was in Leeds. Extra point for being The Who and some of the tracks included.
I don't like live albums
Not my cup of tea but classic rock
I am not a The Who fan and this didn't change that. They are no doubt fantastic musicians but I just don't really like the songs. Especially the 'rock opera' stuff, my god that was horrible.
Not into live albums or The Who so this was a tough one. Despite that there's no denying they were a great live act
I will never understand the rockist obsession with live albums. This sounds like a jam band doing covers in a city park for a free weekend show. Every song is too long, they spend too much time on random riffs and asides, and the vocals (where they even show up at all) are way too low in the mix. I can only imagine people falling asleep at this show. 2/5 (+1 because some of the guitar riffs were cool, if not worth the 15 minute 'medley' they were a part of)
The Who a bar band, whose musical ambitions surpass the abilities of what they could do live, rip through their classics in the Live at Leeds album in a tight hour and 15 minutes. The sloppy energy do well for things like Can't Explain and Magic Bus, but fall flat on on the mini opera of A Quick One While He is Away.
Garbage.
I’m sure it was quite raw and heavy at its time, but this album doesn’t feel memorable. Like when I think of heavy moments from classic rock, I think of the exit of the solo in Heartbreaker, Comfortably Numb, or any of the black sabbath songs. This feels dull, homogenous, and a bit of a hot mess to be honest. Not a fan
Tror fan att jag fått 5 liveplattor de senaste 10 dagarna. Jag får kräks.
Not big into live albums
This bored me. The Who always did. I tried but it all felt so samey.
Every time I listen to this band I think "Someone get this drummer a better band". I feel like I should like this since it's my favourite rock era - but I just don't. It sounds boring, the singing is bad, the lyrics are artsy-fartsy but the songs are bland.
I am never a fan of live albums but for quality of a live album and for the time period this is a great record. I was never a fan of The Who but it doesn't mean that they are not a good band. I personally don't care for the Blues undertones that many of their songs have and I really think the the quality of sound is only good when you dedicate the time to listen to this on a good sound system. I listened to this today in the car and honestly there is so much lost while not giving this album your whole attention.
me cargó me cargan los discos en vivo
I like the who, but I found this live experience over indulgent. I'm sure if I saw it live I'd have loved it, but not a live recording I pulled this energy from, just boredom
I can't tell if the fact they're as good live now as they were then is a good thing or a terrible thing, but I'm not in my sixties so I don't really give a fuck.
Ik heb niet super veel met The Who. Tel erbij op dat het een live-album is (wat ik vaak matig vind) en dan krijg je deze score.
I'm not usually the biggest fan of live albums. But I will say the quality and production value of this one is insanely impressive. Like it sounds as if it was recorded in a full studio modern day, let alone live and like 50 years ago. The music itself was fine and I'd listen to maybe one or two again. I'm mostly just impressed with the technical and performance quality
this was all right background music but it wasn't good
Normally The Who gets a 3 but -1 for a live album. This is my 4th The Who album so far. I hope there's no more. Not that they're terrible, I just don't think I'm going to change my mind about them being only ok.
I don’t think live albums should be on the list. Most of them are essentially greatest hits.
Oh my God they seriously spent a full 5 minutes introducing A Quick One (ironic). Look, the story isn't very complicated and DEFINITELY isn't deep enough to merit that much banter. Really the banter throughout is really, really dumb. I respect that the Who were absolutely determined to be different from what was out there at the time. It's just that sometimes that expressed as some rinky-dink kindergarten bullshit melodies. Substitute and Happy Jack back to back was absolutely brutal. I do have more appreciation for Keith Moon now, I'll admit. Always thought the drums really lacked potency on the studio recordings. Like if Bonham was the theoretical 10, Moon would be a consistent 4. In this recording I got a lot more of the frantic energy people are always raving about him, which meant the pure power wasn't missed so much. Really tempted to 1-star this thing just because of that 5 minute A Quick One intro, but there's some pretty putrid 1 stars out there. We're going 2.
Familiar but uninspiring, some simply conceived rock songs interspersed with plain chatter. Some songs are simply stupid, others are competent rock songs with a semblance of swagger. All seems a bit creaky looking back though, a bit ryvita and bone medicine
Don't love live albums, don't love the Who...not a great combo for me. 2/5
Not that good, I appreciate the who but this album doesn’t seem appropriate for this list.
I’m not a huge fan of their live playing style, but sometimes it’s a vibe when they just keep shredding the guitar like a Crazy Horse song.
Didn’t find this particularly interesting. Preferred the studio versions of most of these songs
Not a fan of live albums
Truly not sure why this is on this list. So forgettable.
Pas le meilleur album de The Who.
Really haven’t listened to a lot of pre “Who’s Next” Who but if I was going to, I’d prefer it to NOT be a live album. None of the songs punched the same for me like a Baba O’Riley or Won’t Get Fooled Again
I do not have an inherent issue with live albums being on the list, but man do they like to have parts that are too long for their own good. Now, I know that's the point, you want a long show to keep you entertained, but in listening it often is just boring, and there's no exception ere. It does not help this is my first album by The Who, so not a great intro, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it more when we get around to the studio albums. For now, we're tied to a pretty mediocre live album that certainly had its charming moments but otherwise is a weird addition. Must be big, though, as I see it at every record shop I've ever gone to.
The pseudo bootleg album cover is a cute touch. How many of you kids even know what a bootleg record is though? There's no doubt that The Who have a handful of monster rock songs, I consider them their Tier 1 songs. But all their other material is Tier 2 and pretty middling at best. In addition I find that they tend to recycle their songs so a lot of them sound alike, eg the repetitive minimalist keyboards on Baba O'Reily, Won't get fooled again and Eminence Front, although good, are all very similar. I see that the original 1970 release was only 37 mins long, but subsequent releases got really bloated and range from 77 mins to a soul crushing 239 mins for the 2010 re-issue! Also, and this may be blasphemous to some but I find Keith Moon's drumming to be over-rated, they give him way too much prominence in the mix and he tends to keep repeating the same flourishes and fills over and over again. This live album was released a year before they knocked it out out of the park with their studio album - Who's Next, so this record doesn't feature some of their best material. They do a decent cover of Johnny Kidd's Shakin' all over, but I think Van Morrison's live version (on Van Morrison Live in San Francisco) and the Guess Who's versions are better. Funny story about that song - Randy Bachman from the Canadian Band The Guess Who? once told John Entwistle that people constantly got The Who and The Guess Who mixed up. Tired of being yelled at for not playing Shakin' all over, the Who started playing it just to keep the crowd happy. Bachman responded that the Guess Who had the same reasons for playing "My Generation". Methinks those audiences were all stoned out of their minds. Anyways, this album is more for hard core Who fans as it doesn't make a compelling argument for needing to listen to this vs their studio albums.
Mehhhh lol
It's \"Live\" which is kinda bad in my opinion. If these songs were actual songs that weren't from a stupid \"Live\" performance I think I would like them a lot more.
Vildi fíla þessa meira, en það er ekki nema ca. helmingurinn af lögunum áhugaverður; annar gítar við hlið Townshends myndi þétta soundið; það mætti reka slappan Roger Brexit Daltrey; hækka í áheyrendum, og minnka Spinal-Tap-legt spjallið milli laga.
For the album that records the allegedly (according to Wikipedia) "best live presentation," it's a disappointment. Indeed, most of the songs are already on this list in other albums, and even considering that I'm far from the end of the list, I've received some better live albums. I like "The Who," and I enjoyed the experience, but even 1001 being a long list, I don't see a clear explanation to justify this one.
Boring after a while
Bon Live!
I’m not a fan of live albums, I never liked The Who. Not particularly excited to see this one come up. I found out the original release was 37mins so that certainly help me make it to the end. I guess it’s pretty Led Zepesque, so that’s probably where the appeal lies. Personally, I’m just not a fan of this post 60s bluesy guitar rock.
I like The Who, didn't like this album.
What a powerful live Set. Especially the rhythm section is acting like a kid on tons of sugar. 2.3
Sounds pretty good for a live album; it's still The Who though so the songs aren't up to much and are pretty long without much of interest happening
Perfectly competent but kind of boring, doesn’t do much to change my opinion that live albums are rarely a good idea
Un album tutto sommato simpatico, live, ma non troppo però non capisco perché tutti ne parlano come un capolavoro. Magari lo è stato il concerto, ma non si riesce a rivivere la stessa atmosfera.
Ugh The Who…Live
It’s not bad for a live album, but you have to really like The Who to sit through this, because there’s a whole lot of it.
This is a 2 because it’s live, I am sorry but imho there shouldn’t be any live albums on here
This album is ok. Something about it I can't put my finger on is not working for me. Maybe it's the singing, or the guitar playing, not sure. But for whatever reason, I did not really enjoy this album. Favorite song: N/A Worst song: N/A
I don’t know. I’m sure I’m missing something.
While the album was fine, I do not think the fact it was live added any value.
If I liked The Who, I’d probably have liked this. But I don’t, so I didn’t.
Reasonable rock band with a very good drummer. The expanded version drags like hell. The original LP lineup is better, but no one needs a 15 minute version of 'My Generation'
I find the audience banter annoying, all their 60's songs sound too similar, and when your lead singer is the third best singer in the band, that's usually a bad thing.
Why this live album?? There are so many better Who Albums and if there are multiple on here I’d rather have a different artist highlighted
I understand that live music albums can sound crappy but, my god, this was impressive in its crappiness. Saved by the fact that The Who are a solid band though.
1995 expanded version favourite song: tattoo least favourite song: a quick one, while hes away this album goes on and on without going anywhere interesting, the 15 minute version of my generation would have been more enjoyable if i hadnt already listened to almost an hour of tripe. album started as a 3/5 but overstayed its welcome.
Corny lyrics, lots of covers.
A good example of what I said last week or whenever it was that a lot of live albums are crap. This does nothing to elevate their work, and The Who were terribly overrated anyway. And they have shit on-stage banter too.
Not sure why they bothered releasing this as a live album - if there was an electric atmosphere, they certainly haven't captured it, and the live versions of the songs they do are elongated worse versions of the original recordings (which I don't rate that highly anyway). 2/5
Listened part of the album, but didn’t really appeal.
(ehkä väärä levy mut tarpeeksi lähellä.) varsin pätevää, live tuo tähän heti lisää jotain sellaista, mitä oon The Whossa kaivannut aiemmin. ehkä bassovoittoisempaa? tai sitten se on tuo vuosi 1970, hyvä ajanjakso. klassikkohittejä, ei valittamista, mut ei herätä suuria tunteita.
no inspiration found...
I guess you had to be there.
Pretty much a case of "you can tell an album by its cover": 3rd Who album I'm getting here, and I still find their music uninspiring and bland. P.S. Also, they talk too much.
This would have been a fun show to be at, but it's not an "album" - how many times do I have to say that?
Not a live album fan and this one just added to the reason why I don't.
Too long
Never been a huge fan of the Who, and their live album was not very exciting to me at all
Why is this on the list.......it's just songs from their other albums, but worse.
A live album but let's cherry pick the tracks. Then after reviewer acclaim bung on a few more tracks to give punters better value for money. The album highlights the poor sound systems in operation at the time. Why pick out a student venue to showcase the band? Overall one wholly messy album which does not put the band in a good light, compared to their studio output which was much more creative. It probably sounded good at the concert itself.
2,5; with all due respect it was way too long and unremarkable to rate it higher in comparison to other albums here
Nice enough, but all tracks sound quite similar, there is no real standout. All in all a bit disappointing and forgettable. 2/5
Honestly over The Who being on this list. I’ve been lucky with live albums so far despite not preferring them but I was not thrilled with this one
Lacks the energy of a truly great live album, and the culprit lies mainly with the vocal performance. There's a great selection of the band's hits and best B-sides at play, the instrumentals are charged and rip through the mix, but Daltrey sounds tired and is buried underneath everything else to the point where even his stage banter seems forced.
Waste of a perfectly good spot on the list for someone else. As a rule I hate live albums. If I wasn’t at the concert I don’t want to hear it secondhand. Lame.
I think a live album should have to be of an iconic band in an iconic era, playing their best to make it to this list. And I don’t reckon this cuts it.
The Who är The Who och The Who är bra men inte SÅ bra tack hej
Vanlig gubbkanon, måttet bättre än Beatless
Eh
Bit shit. 4.5/10.
I've had three The Who albums so far, and I can deal with that. They weren't bad, I enjoyed all of them to some extent. But now I'm getting a live album that has those same songs on it, and I just don't see the point. This album shouldn't be on the list.
This is a prime example of a live album that is worse because it’s live. The band talking is hard to understand and doesn’t have much use. The songs are ok but better in a studio album. 4.3/10
No Thanks.
I feel very 'meh' about this album. The first thing I noticed was how underwhelming the vocals are. Not on every song, but on many of them the singing is just not good. I like the little chatting interludes (since it is a live album), but not much going on besides that. 3/10
Somebody is going to have to explain the who to me because I just don't get it. Nothing about their music grabs me in any way. It's not excruciating, but I don't particularly enjoy it either.
Clearly talented musicians, but I've never really connected with their work. This album didn't change that for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Love THE WHO, but live albums... are not what I want to listen to. Also, this one doesn't even sound all that great!
Too much yakking and not enough playing.
Too long, some good songs but mostly meh
1970: Shakin' All Over
2.5 stars
eh, not my style. Not awful but I wouldn't care if I didn't listen to it again.
ok
I've made it clear how I feel about live concert recordings. And, to be honest, The Who only has a few songs that I like - none of which are on here.
Only listened to first track
Dreck.
Moeizaam me door dit live album heen geworsteld, valt allemaal net niet lekker bij mij.
I honestly just kind of skimmed this one. I don't mind listening to a studio album from a band that while I respect, don't necessarily enjoy, a live album is tough.
Why is The Who so popular?
It was alright. Listened to the extended edition, one or two tracks. My generation.
