Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Not bad. Just not for me. Feels repetitive after the first 15 or so minutes.
Not what I expected from a 60's album called Back At The Chicken Shack. Still wasn't bad. 6/10
Jazzy Hammond Organ all the time! And that got a bit repetitive. Smith is talented but it felt a bit “too much of a good thing”.
Ok - this is actually pretty damn cool! I'm not really into Jazz, but this is entry level enough that I can enjoy it. Still enough structure and groove here for me to enjoy.
Kul sound for å være fra 60-tallet.
Honestly really solid stuff. If I could rate this a 3.5 I would because it’s really solid but I think it’s just shy from great. It makes for really nice background music and I honestly really enjoy the vibe the organ brings to the table here. I really like the first track and most of this album isn’t terribly memorable but it’s really pleasant while it’s on and I could totally see this being a good background listen if I wanna relax.
I like it, but is this essential? Sounds like entry level jazz to me. Easy on the ear. There's more essential jazz albums that are not on the list IMHO. Favorite song: Messy Bessy.
Nice background music
Just some groovy jazz. It's pleasant to listen to, feels like the first track has some Blues influence, idk why. The cover is really good too, reminds me of the Swedish countryside. Coooool. Organ really doing it's job, huh.
Overall just a pleasant listen.
It's a great background music album. 3/5
The branding and the cover are great. The music is good, energetic but ultimately there's a lot of what seems like noodling for my taste.
Okwy
Soulful and excellent group of tracks played some of 60’s jazz pantheon, highly valued in any jazz collection. But nothing more than that.
A legend on the keys!
It's a fun album. Cool moments, but ultimately not one I'll come back to.
Standard noodley jazz. Good background for my workday
3.5
nice jazz but too long to be my favourite
Back at the chicken shack was perfect for the mood I was in. Not the biggest fan of jazz, but I love a good horn!
Vibes. A really nice jazz album, but nothing special
Anything on the Blue Note label is generally good and this album is no exception. I particularly like the organ playing which I think (but I’m no expert) is a rarity in jazz. As a Sax player myself (have I mentioned that before 😉?) I love to listen to those really proficient and dream that I was just 1% as good. This is a nice album to play anytime as it covers most bases. 3/5 10/4/25
It was solid swingy jazz. Not the kind of thing I typically listen to. I found myself wanting vocals but the sax and organ came through in the same way
Cool Jazz
First Listen. Can see why and where Jimmy would have been influential. Great Hammond organ player. I don't usually listen to jazz, but I like it when I do. Hope to come back to listen to more of him.
Sometimes I give threes to albums that display a ton of talent but aren’t my thing. This is one of those threes.
So far this sounds like intermission music. You know? Like that short break before your feature presentation? Ya? No? I usually struggle with instrumental music. I’m holding on now. It’s not bad. Annnnd ok I get it, what you hear at the start is what you will hear all the way through. Not my bag baby but for it’s genre, it’s passable.
3/5 enjoyed
good but not entire my thing.
2.5 stars
Jazz organ, some sax, not too bad, a bit too much noodeling.
I have no context or other albums to measure this against but I enjoyed it as background and can appreciate the musical skills. Do I feel like I'd have missed out by not listening? Maybe. Maybe not
loved the instrumentals, i wasn’t fully paying attention whilst listening but still a great listen
Not a huge fan to be honest
Funky
Trop bien l'orgue ! Belle découverte
What a nice and sympathetic jazzy sound !!
The “incredible” Jimmy Smith—just in case any skeptics need reassurance. I liked it a lot. A laid-back Blue Note album with a nice touch of Soul and the distinctive sound of a Hammond B-3 organ (if Wikipedia is to be believed), which I love for its warm tone (Minor Chant solo, case in point). But… the double bass is quite discreet, I even didn’t hear it through headphones, only with good loudspeakers. Drums are also extremely discreet and that rhythmic void is hard to ignore for me. Bam! One star down!
some lovely ideas but some song structures felt dated.
Nice chill background music for me. Not a super super fan but only because am not a jazz fanatic. Still a solid listen.
Good background music. Otherwise unremarkable.
Chill background jazz
Laid-back jazz with prominent Hammond organ, pleasant.
Ok.
It made me think I was a distinguished upper-class gentleman that wore classy suits and had a large wine collection and this gets marks for putting me in that delusion and making me escape the horror that is the real world :)
Nice jazzy album, although a couple of tunes are more blues. Like most jazz, nice background music
the cover is dope
this album put me into a flow state. which is good for me but bad for the album's memorability.
Fun jazzy instrumentals - good solo idea listen
Back At The Chicken Shack // 3-3.5/5
Like the backing track to a 90s US sitcom. I quite enjoyed it. But found it hard to engage with beyond a very superficial level. What an album cover, by the way.
Smooth jazz, such a good listen especially on a spring day like yesterday.
Listenable.
Smooth and makes for nice casual listening.
This was a 50/50 album for me and only 4 songs long. I really enjoyed the second two tracks a lot. I'm kinda neutral on the first two. Worth a listen but probably not a favorite.
Jazzy blues
Jazz. Pretty good.
Not bad and perfectly fine backing music. I currently have limited brain capacity for jazz albums and would take a few recent listens over this.
I can believe I’m going to say this about a jazz album. I didn’t hate it!
Nice for what it is, but not really my thing. Talented musicians but I don’t think it’d get another spin from me unless I was hosting somekind of wine tasting (except I don’t drink wine, or have people over very often - so I guess I’ll probably not listen to it again!)
jazzy and pleasant, but no strong feelings
Some smooth jazz for you. Nice.
Jimmy Smith’s “Back At The Chicken Shack” is a work that truly captures the essence of jazz and soul with its intoxicating blend of improvisation and infectious rhythm. While I appreciated the masterful playing and vibrant energy of the tracks, I admit that this is not the kind of album I would listen to on a daily basis. Its classic, intense sound is best enjoyed on special occasions, when I’m in the right mood to delve into the depth and richness of organ jazz.
Ya like jazz
Fun. Jazzy. Pleasant enough to have on while I do chores around the house. There's so much organ I felt like I was at a baseball game at times, though.
Here I was wondering why Jimmy Cliff released a jazz album. I’ll blame fire brain. 😆 This album was all right. Not my favorite or anything, but a solid listen.
Bit too generic background jazz. 3 stars
I'm at 3 stars for this. I thought it was good, but maybe a little samey, and it's not totally my thing.
Wouldn’t mind going back to the Caddyshack. Long time since I’ve seen that fully. Miss those cheeky gophers. This monolith of Hammond jazz I would go back to if I needed some cool groovy cliche 60s background music for my cliche 60s house party. With extensive sax solos more than anything it’s a bit like 40 minutes of Rainy Day Dream Away but with no Hendrix on guitar or mic to blaze things up another notch. 3.5 stars.
Got to be one of the worst album covers ever surely?! Fortunately the music is much better than the artwork if a bit samey after a while. I liked the vibe though.
Groovy music for when you have coworkers over at your place who you don't know super well but you don't want them to know that the music you listen to mostly is your spotify 'On Repeat' playlist. It's jazz, I'm not crazy about it but it's groovy. Highlights: Minor Chant (esp. the keyboard)
A bit like lift music.
- jooooooo deeeeeeeeeerbe chillig! - hat mir sehr gut gefallen, mega Hintergrundmusik zum Arbeiten, eben auch entspannt und einfach unaufgeregt
I thought this was good, but it wasn't anything revelatory, and when there is so much other amazing jazz on this list, I'm not entirely sure why this one is also here. However, it is obviously not bad, and I can understand why fans of this style would have this in their rotation.
Surprising I kind of like the album.....interesting early stuff...
Very nice. Hadn't heard before.
Great album name
Legal
Jimmy Smith could sure play the Hammond organ, I will say that. Don't have much else to say outside of that, a pretty simple production when comparing to other jazz records from this time. Not a bad Friday morning listen.
Feels like the average jazz album you'd find on a random cassette at your grandparent's house.
already in the list
Tempted to give it a 2 just because like. eh.
enjoyed it
Very nice easy listening - akin to being in a jazz bar in Paris, thanks!
I’ve been meaning to check this album out for a while since it always comes up when looking for classic Hammond organ records. It turned out to be a great listen, especially for a laidback Sunday morning. The mix of soulful jazz and blues creates a mellow and groovy atmosphere, making it an easy album to relax to.
It’s good jazz, i didn’t know when the album finished and other songs started the shuffle though.
3.5
Ambient, slow
Cool, would probably find myself going 'hell yeah' when used as a radio interlude. Not quite main attraction enough for me on a whole album. Find myself thinking that this could lose some solos and be a killer backing band.
Talk about an album cover not lining up with the content of the album eh? I might regret rounding down here, I just don’t really have the context for jazz unless it’s really obviously Out There. I liked this though, and will probably check it out again.
girl whatever low 3, not bad enough for a 2
Pre-listening thoughts: absolutely fire album name and cover. Hopefully the music lives up to it all. Post/during listening thoughts: so smooth I forgot I was listening. Sometimes I was like “oh hell yeah he (and the cats) cooked here” and sometimes I was like “am I in an elevator?”. Maybe that’s just the duality of jazz. 5.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: Minor Chant, On The Sunny Side of the Street (bonus track) Least fav tracks: n/a
Just Jazz
Very skilled musicianship! I like this, but I don't like a whole album of it. I can't believe this is one of 1,001 albums I MUST hear.
Shades of Austin Powers in parts
Did not really listen ngl
Funky
Deserves more listening. Nonvocal jazz with a focus on I think synth? Could move up for me.
Good jazz album. Songs were very long but I enjoyed the ride.
Ok but didn’t really do it for me as much as Miles Davis
Organ Jazz.
Very groovy
As smooth & chill as it gets. Not a big jazz guy but this was a pleasant listen.
Not usually the type of music I listen to however I did enjoy
This album cover is good. I've never heard of Jimmy Smith, but based on this, he's pretty cool. I like that there is a genre called "hard bop". If it were me I'd say these are more like "chill bops" though. Nothing super captivating, but I'm not mad at it.
Good, almost great.
Best: Messy Bessie Worst: n/a Liked songs: 100%, 5/5 Mid to strong 3 For my first full jazz record I'm certainly not upset, but I'm pretty sure now that organ jazz just isn't my style of jazz. I feel like in order to step into 4 or 5 territory with a jazz record you're gonna need some epic solos, which the record doesn't really have. Don't get me wrong, it's a great record but there's not a lot of distinguishment between the songs; I definitely couldn't tell you what song you were playing if you just chose a random one off the album. That being said, it's still pretty enjoyable, though I'm not really sure I'll be coming back to it that much. Decent record.
music for a ballpark
Pretty good background music but I don't think I'd play it again
Do you like the organ when you hear it? Do you love that fat syrupy sound? Is that your jam? If so, you'll be thrilled when you play this record. If you're not an organ enthusiast, you probably won't unless you happen to find mid-tempo blues vamps with a side of jazzy struts enjoyable. The album is a vibe. Even at its most energetic it still feels laid back with some pleasant bounce and slight swing to contrast with its more sedate moments. It would make for fine background music on a sunny day doing lunch on the back patio with a few friends — or so I imagine.
It’s alright. Sax was good
This reminds me of when I was a kid because of the jazz element so I’m a bit biased, but it wasn’t the best thing in the world. However I enjoyed just because of the nostalgia factor
So chill and easy to listen. Sax has some tasty melodys in it! « Messi Bessie » the highlight 3,5 stars
just kept getting better as it went along. i love a good chill jazz album
It was good. Would have probably been rated higher if we hadn't had so many great ones earlier in the week.
08/15 smooth jazz, the one that you hear in your 08/15 café or on any spotify jazz playlist
Groove
An album that was enjoyable but kept fading into the background. The organ was fun. I will probably add this to a "background music while I work" playlist.
Organ jazz.
Smooth and relaxing. Nothing too exciting.
Organ jazz 👌
Pleasant music, not something I would willingly put on though
Þetta er alveg fínt. Er þetta meira en fínt? Ég er ekki að heyra það.
Nice smooth jazz album.
ok
genre: jazz, no lyrics; i liked this album it was a pleasant listen! it reminded me of the jazz music my dad listened to.
Enjoyed this
You like Jazz?
I enjoyed my time at the shack. 3.5 stars
sounds good. organ and some guitar. doesn't stand out
Nice smooth jazzy blues - but not very interesting. Just background music.
3/5 Competent straight forward jazz
I found it enjoyable. I'm not big on jazz in general, but this one was nice and smooth and I appreciated that quite a bit. I can't name a single track though as they all meld together for me quite easily when there's no lyrics Standouts - 3/5
Enjoyable enough but nothing too exciting here, has made me think I don't like the use of organs in jazz 3.5*
Mostly laid back, not terribly exciting. Good background.
Very nice album, enjoyed listening to it. It seems that it's a pretty old one but it was nice and jazzy. I like that there weren't too many songs and it was a quick listen.
Vibe album. Need to be in the mood
Groovy stuff
smooth, expressive jazz instrumentals
I liked it. But some of the songs were a bit too long and repetitive.
I feel like the songs are really long and they sound almost the same to me.
It’s been fun discovering some old Jazz albums through this list. This was another good one.
A groovy feel, but not enough light and dark for me
-this sort of reminds me of Green Onions, with all the Hammond synth and R&B feel. I liked the way it fused all that with a slightly more traditional jazz sound. -this guy seems pretty underrated, apparently he worked with Wes Montgomery -Favorites are When I Grow Too Old To Dream and Minor Chant
I really enjoyed this album I have to say. So why the 3 stars? I’m not sure what other blue note stuff is coming up in this list, but if this record is in there then I know there’s gonna be stuff I enjoy more, or is more adventurous. Still a solid listen
Jazz I actually enjoyed. Not sure why.
I like jazz but outside some of the big names my knowledge is poor. This record has a great laid back feel to it, background jazz but in the nicest way possible.
pretty standard jazz album, but i enjoyed it!
I liked this quite a bit in general, but a lot of it sounded the same. 3.5 rounded down.
Really enjoyed this one. Very cool smooth sound. High 3.
Solid instrumental jazz album
I did enjoy listening to this. But I put it on while painting a room. Can’t say any song jumped out at me as being essential. 3.5/5
Similar to Green Onions, but slightly more bareable. The sax was really cool
Not a bad album, although doesn’t give me the feeling that I like to feel when listening to music. Not to say all lyrics-less music is bad but this just isn’t for me
My immediate thought within seconds of pressing play is that this sounds like something that would play over a montage of Jimmy carrying out a scheme in Better Call Saul Nothing too crazy, just a nice relaxing time that settles into the background (in a good way). I find it quite hard to articulate what I like and dislike about jazz so I'll just say I appreciated the emphasis on the organ. If I had to guess, Jimmy Smith played a part in a lot of prog rock bands that followed shortly after this adopting the organ 3.5 Highlights: Back At The Chicken Shack
Pretty cool, pretty groovy, by my oh my, with so many albums what makes this one special? Fave? I guess Back At The Chicken Shack.
Smooth background jazz
too crunchy for my taste
Funky organ-led jazz with a strong footing in blues. Goes down smooth.
Cool jazzy album
Jazzy
Funky jazz background music.
you know i love that sweet sweet saxophone soundddddd…obviously i liked this a lot! it reminded me of the kind of music my dad listened to a lot when i was a kid, so listening to it was oddly nostalgic even though i’ve never heard the record before.
very lovely! i can't say it's something i'd really return to but it was really pleasant listening while i was working. i like the organ/clavinet/???? that was on a lot of songs, which definitely did make it kind of sound elevator-music-y but not in a bad way, just in a soothing way i guess.
Decent, smooth jazz. Not smooth like Kenny G, more like Booker T. Not bad but not my favorite kind of jazz.
Easy listening but didn't blow me away.
Music that made me feel like I was overhearing the soundtrack to the movie of whatever activity I was doing (driving my 25 minute commute, is what I was doing). Enough horns and variations to perk me up from time to time but otherwise pretty tame, innocuous and *jazzy*
my tastes made me wary of this album but I liked it a lot. It avoids all the jazz stuff I don’t like and focuses on the stuff I do
This was so jazzy! I was really productive while listening to this, but I probably wouldn't listen again. Some of the timing of the playing wasn't as tight as I wanted it to be.
Who doesn’t love a good organ? Good sunday morning album, but fades into the background a bit for me. Would give a 7/10 if if was an option.
A classic in the genre of “stuff I’d have never heard of or listened to if not for 1001 Albums” but I enjoyed it!
Seemed very lackluster even for a jazz album
Cool cool jazz.
Good
Beautifully recorded. The 12 bar blue numbers are well done. But like all 12 bar blue instrumentals - grow quickly monotonous. The ii-V-I numbers are more interesting. No one did a jazz quartet/quintet with a tenor and a B-3 better. Still not sure it totally works. The B-3 is such a great mood enhancer - like a peddle steel in country music. But as a lead? Hmmmm. And other than Turrentine, the players are competent but not stellar jazz improvisers. Great background music.
Best way to describe this album would be a "Coffee House Soundtrack". It's great for having in the background and maybe swaying to, but a lot of the pieces meld together and it feels like 1 really long piece instead of 5 separate tracks. I'd give it a 6/10
It's a nice jazz record. The Hammond Organ is not my fav color in the jazz world, but the tunes here groove and the playing is great. I have nothing bad to say about it, but it doesn't blow my socks off like other jazz records have. Would absolutely put on in the bkgrnd tho
3 out of 5. For me it's an ok jazz album but I wouldn't mind listening to it again.
So many jazz greats are left out of this book but this one made it? Is this more essential than any Coleman, Blakey, Shorter or Dolphy? Definitely not.
Super smooth jazz! That being said, got this in a day I was running around crazy, would have been better to be able to chill with this on a dreary day. 3.25/5
Meget lettilgængeligt jazz, virkelig catchy
perfectly enjoyable background music, but if the reaper stalled my death for half an hour so i could listen to this, could i understand why? no
I will return to the chicken shack again.
Jazzy. Ok
Jazzy and good supper cooking music.
A wonderful, rich instrumental pallet cleanse from most other sounds of 1963
Maybe I would have preferred it with some vocals attached, but you can't deny how good that organ is
Not what I’d choose to listen to, but an interesting change.
Great soft jazz with organ-lead compositions. This really fits a very specific mood, one that most oftentimes includes a dark liquor and a cozy fire, but not required. The music seldom varies from its core theme, but that doesn’t tarnish its wonderful, sparkling sound ensemble. I would not spin this unless I had a specific group of circumstances, however that does not mean that I don’t enjoy the rhythm.
Chill background vibes.
Smooth jazz
I will continue to love listening to jazz in the morning. There was nothing that stood out on this one as being really worthy of the list other than just being solid jazz. I appreciate that it is shorter as it does not overstay its welcome. 6/10
Jimmy Smith's organ sounds so dated to the 60s here in a way I don't think I can articulate, so I won't. That sounds like a potential insult but it's maybe my favorite part of an album that just didn't connect with me much for other reasons also impossible to articulate on first listen. Hopefully it'll connect more in the future.
Nice. Very groovy, man. Appreciating the jazz today.
Relaxed jazz album, with a cool organ sound. Entertaining, although the songs are quite similar. The guitar reminds me of Julian Lage. I like the title song Back at the Chicken Shack the best.
Perfectly enjoyable background music, but nothing to get too excited about.
I'm sure this is important but I just can't live it as more than background music.
Nice
When the album first started I thought it was great but then I realized it's pretty one dimensional. Nobody will fault you for having it on in the background but that's where it belongs. Still some great keyboard playing by Jimmy Smith though. 5.5/10 (2.75/5)
Pretty good jazz album overall. Not sure what else to say.
Really enjoyed this
Here's the thing about jazz. I like it, it's the perfect music for the background, but I'm not a talented enough musician and I don't have the attention span to really evaluate the complexities and skillfulness of the jazz greats. So while I didn't dislike one note I heard, I don't feel like I can properly appreciate the album to give it a fair rating.
Nice jazz, not really my thing but not too bad
it was pleasing to listen to, it makes for good background music while working
Good elevator music
It's all right. No singing, only instrumentals. Probably wouldn't have picked it, but it is fine to listen to.
I’ve never appreciated how groovy and uplifting an organ could sound. This chicken shacks where it’s at
A cool, tight, yet very laid-back affair from top organ player Jimmy Smith. Like cooking in the kitchen on a Sunday afternoon with someone you love, the album bounces along, is filled with activity, and just enough moments of softness and tenderness. If you're like me and feel that jazz constitutes a massive knowledge gap (and I'm told that the best place to start would be compilations, not the album form), then this is a worthy collection of songs that can help you broaden your range from the Accepted Pantheon of Gods. B+
That's not my taste in musik. But some pleasant songs - relaxing
It's a fun listen, jazz organ is a rare enough treat
Ok
Panera music
Keys ok but too much saxy
Happy to hear some more jazz classics. Jimmy Smith in particular is an influental artist who I’m pleasantly suprised to have appear here. All in all, a nice album. Strong 3
Taustamusiikiksi varsin passelia, ei tulisi muuten kuunneltua.
I don't know much about jazz. I enjoyed this album. But there were no standouts. Not bad by any means. 2.5/5 = ok
did they ever try making a bad jazz album?
Jimmy puts out some funky jazz that you can actually listen to without thinking it’s just an instrument tuning session. Back At The Chicken Shack is a successful kickoff, album fades with each successive song - but still good. Liked it well enough to check out some of Jimmy’s other albums. (3.1*s)
It’s was groovy but I probably won’t listen again
Al principio guay. Luego ya .... pues mira, si voy en un ascensor durante mucho rato, sería agradable. Vale, o en un crucero.
Smooth background jazz
Went into this blind and from the name I guessed it would be a country album. I was not expecting smooth jazz. It’s not bad! Not my favorite kind of jazz, but very listenable. I usually lean toward more aggressive or experimental stuff. This is more lounge music, great for background music at a party in the 60s.
I like jazz, but can’t tell if it’s good or not. I like this, but it was no different than the stuff Spotify played afterwards.
I have a soft spot for jazz, but it's not my favourite genre to listen to.
Suffers from all the problems most jazz suffers from. Too long too much technique too little emotion
Twin Peaks ahhhh jazz. That B3 sure is SANGIN. Really great vibes. Zoned out a bit towards the end. Really a 3.5 star ordeal for me.
That was some ultimate background music yazz. Nothing at all stood out to me but the whole thing was a nice listen through.
I wonder if the band Jimmies Chicken Shack from Annapolis was influenced at all by this name. This is some good morning chillin shit. Easy 3 for some good listening. Nothing real spectacular but just good shit.
lay me down in the green brown fields tongue out so i can sweat a twinkling walking shower eyes open so i can see the fleeting goodbye sunset nose twitching so i can smell the deafening fiery powder running cross my cheek it makes me happy when others recognize it as bleak put me down in the green brown fields its all thats left its all ive got in the blood let me marinate not the first time i rot cool album btw
Well this one surprised me went in not expecting much (I had it on in the background while doing housework) but I enjoyed it. The musicianship is fantastic as it slips between genres really well.
Down, cool, groovy and smoothe...3.5
Pretty chill as background music, but nothing here that really demands your attention. The first track is a nice combination of jazz and blues.
I’m a sucker for a Hammond Organ! Wait, that sounds bad! The musical instrument, I mean. I liked his version of the blues, which landed somewhere between New Orleans Jazz and a southern Baptist church. Title track and Minor Chant were key tracks.
I'm trying to catch up here! Jimmy Smith Christmas '64 is one of my favorite Christmas albums. I never thought about checking out his regular work. I like it. Same style as the Christmas record. It definitely is a good one to throw on for an evening of jazz listening.
Nice instrumental album
Good background music.
Cool organ sounds, but not very memorable songs
OK MOR jazz that largely passed me by. Some decent parts to it that caught my attention, often ruined by the organ. I just cant get in board with the organ.
Pleasant relaxing Jazz to have on in the background.
Man, it sounds good in the chicken shack! I sometimes find jazz too inaccessible and can't enjoy it, but I did really like this. Probably just as background music, but perhaps that's what it's for. 3.5
3/5
Minor Chant
1960's Jazz. Pieces all sound similar.
It's aight. 3/5
Easy listening
Almost gave this a 2, but then I listened again--it's tight enough for a 3.5, but going to:
Nice bit of organ-infused jazz from the self-styled Incredible Jimmy Smith.
This made me feel like I was at a baseball game. I enjoyed the first inning (track) but then it got too long and really boring. Almost annoying
Enjoyed it
I would probably spend a couple of hours at the Chicken Shack.
Jazzy. Favourite track: Minor Chant.
I remember liking this it feels like a good dinner party record I wanna revisit the jazzy flows
jazz !!
It was alright. Had it on as background music - it wasn't bad, but just not my sort of thing 3 ⭐️
Really good mind clearer. Lovely situational
Sounded great. Not too outstanding.
Great players, great album art, but wanted more from this one
This is one of those albums that really doesn't need to be on here but doesn't anger or even baffle me with its inclusion, unlike other albums. (Am I just gonna be known as the guy that hates Haunted Dancehall?) Anyways, Back at the Chicken Shack doesn't upset me with its inclusion because its a perfectly fine album. The musical contents are solid. The writing is nonexistent, but that's okay. Instrumental albums are valid too. The sound is nice. It does feel kind of samey throughout, but with only 37 minutes of run time, it doesn't drag or get old. This album isn't very compelling, but it also gives me no reason to think negatively of it. Light 3/5.
Nice change of pace. A very blues driven album with jazz undertones. I love the b3 organ throughout the album. My main issue was that it started sounding like the same song over and over.
Solid jazz, solid performances, and some memorable bits in each song but overall it doesn't click with me. When I grow too old to dream was my favorite. The whole time I could just imagine a bunch of dudes standing together in the studio smiling at each other playing some tunes. Good vibes
Perfectly serviceable jazz, but probably not something I would go back to. It kind of went in one ear and out the other. Favorite song was Messy Bessie
averagish
2/3
I enjoyed this as much as I've ever enjoyed a jazz album. There's still a limited upside / re-listenability to that genre for me. But if I was trapped in a room with only jazz, I would be very happy to put this one on.
This is a solid jazz album with some blues leanings, I don’t think I’ve heard this one but it seems like you usually can’t go wrong with Blue Note in the 60’s. Bonus points for the epic album cover! Jimmy Smith’s name sounds familiar but I can’t say I know much about him. Either way it sounded great pulled up on the big speakers. One thing I love about a good jazz recording is you can hear all the things you’re not usually supposed to, like the shuffling around of the musicians and instruments. Everyone recording in the same room at the same time exposes these imperfections and I love it! Such a simple set up, drums, organ, and sax with the occasional guitar, phenomenal performances and pristine recording, I don’t have a lot to say beyond that. I added this to my ever growing playlist of jazz albums that I need to familiarize myself with and I look forward to revisiting it on a lazy day. A solid 3.5.
Well, I now know where Jimmie's Chicken Shack got their name. This album sounds like the music on Super NES' Side Pocket billiards game. It's mellow elevator jazz. Fancy eatery background music. I get into moods for this type of music, so I'll give some other albums a listen. Jesus, he has many-a-album!
I had no idea what to expect with this and the album cover wasn't any help either. "Chicken Shack" made me think blues... Okay, I was kinda right. Blues meets jazz, maybe a little gospel-tinged organ thrown in. It was...jazz? I don't really know much about jazz and therefore can't really discuss it or deconstruct it. Some jazz I really love, though, despite my relative ignorance of the genre. This was pretty good but not among my personal jazz faves.
I liked this one and once again never heard of the guy. If I were to think up a quick idea of what the definition of straightforward jazz is, it would be this. Absent are crazy time signature changes and eccentric solos. I really liked all the sounds that I heard. The organ has a nice tone to it. The whole thing took me back to playing trumpet in basketball band back in highschool. I really liked Messie Bessie. That song really jams and was my favorite on the album. A lot of the album made me picture low lit jazz clubs in a downtown area or in an upscale restaurant. Some parts of the songs almost had a bit of Henry Mancini type swing/bounce to them. I am reminded also of Walter Wanderly's Cheganca album and The New Mastersounds song 'Old Man Noises', even though those are different organ tones. I'll definitely be adding Messy Bessie to my list of likes on Spotify.
So chill. So very, very chill. This is a nice session from the incomparable Jimmy Smith. It's pretty straight ahead, though. Many jazz albums from this era can work as background music but have enough detail that a critical listen is rewarded. That's not my experience here. This album is cool to listen to and very accessible, which means that it is never becomes challenging and is, frankly, kind of forgettable. I was glad to get a chance to listen to this album because I've seen it on sale from the Blue Note Classic reissue series. I haven't pulled the trigger because I feel that I already have a number of albums from that Blue Note series, including Smith's own Midnight Special from the same sessions as Back at the Chicken Shack, and I haven't seen much of a reason to add this one. My understanding is that Back at the Chicken Shack is the more important album, but I like Midnight Special better, and the Blue Note Classics reissue on vinyl sounds great. I'll probably just stick with that title from here on out. Three stars.
Not what I was expecting based on the album cover. Not really my jam, but liked it fine.
Nice Hammond Organ
Not what I expected
🎧Walked around Bucktown listening to this. Lovely jazz/soul album. Smith lays it down on the B-3 Hammond organ, Stanley Turrentine on the tenor sax. Very pleasant weekend listening.
Jazz asequible.
As far as jazz goes it was decent
Love the album title. A nice little change up jazz album. Would be a good vinyl to have playing while eating a nice meal
Can’t say I’ve ever sought out jazz featuring the electric organ. Exactly what you’d expect, though. Easy listening and solid background music. Now I just have a strong urge to watch The Sandlot.
Good to listen to something different for a change. Loved the first song. After that it was okay. Can’t listen to a full album. In the background it’s great. Can’t deny that it’s musically very good
ok jazz, with a lot of organ
Straight funky jazz
smooth jazzy tunes, would be great for background music while working
I don't typically go for jazz, but enjoyed listening to this in the background while cooking dinner.
nice lil bit of jazz fo today solid stuff enjoyed my stay 3.4/5
Nice swinging beat. If there were a club around here that played this type of jazz all the time, I’d be a regular. 3.8
I know, I know I said just a couple of reviews back that I couldn't get into jazz but this was actually pretty soothing and fun, with actual melodies I could get into.
it was pretty nice
Jazz ish. Nice
It was cutie
Excellent musicianship, but not for me 3/5
Al principio guay. Luego ya .... pues mira, si voy en un ascensor durante mucho rato, sería agradable. Vale, o en un crucero.
Very nice... but overall probably on par with that Green Onions album. It's really good, but not jumping off the page for me.
A relaxing album, I liked Back At The Chicken Shack the most.
Good, but not my style
Tja, wat moet ik zeggen. Typisch rustige Jazz, vind er niet belachelijk veel aan. Ik ga wel alsnog een 3 geven want het is lekkere achtergrondmuziek als je bijv een etentje hebt
Super smooth and enjoyable. Stays on target the entire time.
- Chill and smooth. Honestly feels like background music to a relaxing pre-90s comedy. - Would not change the station if this came on. But I would never seek it out either. - How can you even separate the tracks in your head? They continually bleed into each other. "Minor Chant" started in a cool way...but then right back to sounding like everything else. - I am probably being generous with this score. I do not mind the jazz, but why is this something everyone should hear?
it all sounded the same but it was cool ig
I liked it for background music! I never know what to rate things so I’ll probably always put 3 stars.
Love it...organ jazz!
This album will make great background music for cooking and eating etc. That's not meant to be damning with faint praise. I liked it because each riff or solo seemed effortlessly spot on.
