Reviews (page 10 of 13)

Jazz/blues. Bastante órgão e saxofone. Não tem vocal. Poderia ter mais guitarra.Gostei.

Smooth and mellow all the way through.

Good stuff. Prob not an all the time listen but really nice throwback.

I've heard better Jazz

Really good. But I still can't connect to jazz/blues enough to give it a 4.

Cool jazz album. Must admit I’m not the biggest fan of the organ in jazz, but this has just the right amount for me. Kenny Burrell and Stanley Turrentine also get their chance to shine on each track. Highlight is probably the title track for me.

Pleasant to listen to

Pretty enjoyable for laidback lounge music. Could see myself watching this live on a cruise boat with a few drinks to go along with it.

Really wanted to give this a 4 when I started the album, was at first disappointed to see it was so short but it got very repetitive and a boring. I think it needs a second and third listen to fairly judge.

Not usually a fan of jazz, but this was actually quite good. Probably won’t listen to it again though

Pleasant enough to listen to in the background.

Another jazz album that was absolutely fine, as background music. Solid three stars, nothing bad about it but not gonna listen to it again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well that certainly wasn't what I was expecting from the album cover and title lol. While the musicianship on display here is great, this just didn't connect with me at all. I wouldn't choose to sit down and listen to this, at best it would be background music while I'm doing other things. I already have other instrumental albums that I like a whole lot more for that though.

Not interested

Great study music

It was jazz and I didn’t hate it

I like the overall sound. Makes for good background music while I'm working. That said, none of the tracks grabbed me in particular.

Not sure what I was expecting, based on the album cover but sort of backgroundy jazz music wasn't it. Not bad, just not something that resonates particularly.

Not sure if this is suffering from following Fela, or if it's just another purely instrumental album I struggle to connect with.

Pleasant all the way through but never really exciting.

Generic smooth jazz, but good stuff anyway.

Nice playful soul jazz that make your day begins in a good mood!

Great background music but not much more. Easy listening

not the beeeestt jazz album i've heard in my life but still good :p

Very soothing well done yazz album. 3/5

Good stuff! Solid jazz album reflective of the times. Give it a listen.

This was a pleasant organ-led jazz album. i enjoyed having it on and listened to it a few times. Is it groundbreaking? Not necessarily. But it's something I'll put on in the background every so often. 3/5.

Sounds kind of repetitive but maybe its because THEY KEEP GIVING ME JAZZ PLEASE STOP

Some jazz thing.

Pretty chill

This was decent. I liked it more than I thought I would. I can tell as jazz goes, this is really good. Would probably rate higher if I was a bigger jazz fan.

It is very good background music. Something you can stick on and no one will really pay much notice too. Some of the tracks were enough to make me turn my head to actually give it some attention but the rest was mid.

Great jazz

A shuffling, swirly organ, guitar picking fest. Timeless and impeccably engineered. Good for background but not 100% my thing.

A fun listen. I'm looking forward to more skronk on future jazz picks.

Solid Jazz album

Early 60's jazz. Good music. Not my jam. I can tell that it's solid jazz.

Back At The Chicken Shack“?

Another solid record with an amazing array of reviews. I liked the history, the title and the tunes.

I thought this was going to be some old school Jamaican ska or a rustic spot of Louisiana blues. Was surprised to hear some pretty smooth and luscious sax-based jazz. Not my favourite sort of thing but performed with great flair.

Prima jazz. Leuk orgeltje.

great, funky soul jazz but left me a bit underwhelmed over 40+ min. not much variation

Accessible jazz, keyboard

It's just about as basic as you can get for a jazz album. It's mostly just vamping over some nice chords. It's not off-putting to listen to and it's not that engaging either. It's some of the most inoffensive music I've heard and I have to mark it down for that. These guys really do be playing some instruments. Track 3 had a little somin somin to it mind.

"Incredible" is a bit of a stretch. Probably better off using "Plain Old Jimmy Smith", or "Just Jimmy Smith", or even more equitable "Jimmy Smith". And there wasn't even one chicken singing on the album that I heard (though to be truthful I couldn't bring myself to listen to much of it, being rather disappointed that there was nothing "incredible" going on). Sunny side of the street is nice, though.

I don't like jazz really, but this one was a real chill time. Way more accessible than most jazz albums, and there was some genuine foot tapping action going on for most of its runtime. 3.5 rounded down.

Back At The Chicken Shack - 8/10 When I Grow Too Old To Dream - 7.5/10 Minor Chant - 8/10 Messy Bessie - 7.5/10 On The Sunny Side Of The Street - 8/10 TOTAL - 39/50

I'm excited for an album called back at the Chicken shack!

Ganz entspannt bluesig/jazzig. Meine Frau würde sagen: mach doch mal die Barmusik leiser. Ich sage: ich nehme noch einen Martini.

Easy listening.

Very enjoyable, but not super engaging to my taste. It’s nothing against the musicianship. It’s just not all that interesting to me.

Listened Before? N Nice smooth jazz. Not really my thing on a day to day basis but good for a chill afternoon. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Back at the Chicken Shack

The sax on this guy… wow. It’s good jazz, what I expected Coltrane or Davis to sound like but without all the cocaine.

Keyboard jazz. 3/5

3.25 per track. Pleasant.

I'm not a fan of the keyboard, I prefer piano, but it was interesting and the other instruments were enjoyable.

I love Jazz… just found it a bit slow and felt it needed more vocals

1963. Good year to be born. Decidedly, I prefer a great vocalist, curious lyrics, and bongos in that order. Saxophones are sometimes interesting but too much can be grating.

Not as much to say on this one. Some great jazz pieces and a good bit of blues thrown in. I don't know jazz history very well, but I would imagine this album has a place in it. Instrumentation is bright and cheery, but also laid back and playful. Doesn't seem as groundbreaking as some other jazz records to me at least, but I'm sure we'll get there. Bonus points for having songs named Back at the Chicken Shack and Messy Bessie.

Pretty good, but not really anything that stood out to me. Liked the dog, though.

Nice smooth listen. I’ll probably dip into his catalog more in the not so distant future.

3.5⭐. Not bad. Good for background noise while throwing darts in the sunroom late at night

Heard this album last time I went to a steakhouse.

Jazz classics

I wanted to like this album more then I did unfortunately because I love the cover and the title. The songs kind of blended all together in a blandish way. Best Song: On the Sunny Side Of The Street Worst Song: N/A PS: Funky Broadway by Jimmy Smith slaps fr

These cats at cookin

Pretty chill blues. I can see how this could have been a big deal back in 1963. Also jazzy, but still mellow all the way through.

Easy listening.

bluesy

It was funky

Fun listen. Not a genre I would seek out but I liked this. First song, Back at the Chicken Shack, reminded me of the Sandlot scene where they are at the fair so kind of brought in a childhood memory to me and made me feel good.

I enjoy a lil jazz in the background. Could see myself listening to this again and exploring his other stuff.

This album is a vibe. I guess all jazz is a vibe, but this is a vibe I actually enjoy. I could see myself putting this as background music during a sexy/sex party. That may be simultaneously a diss and the highest compliment I can give a jazz album. Jazz always makes me think of that scene in So I Married an Axe Murderer. Woman. WHOOAAA-man. 3.5/5

Just didn't appeal to me as much as other jazz albums I've heard through top album list. When I Grow Too Old to Dream and Messy Bessie were the two I liked the most.

Funky jazz, good background music.

3 Meh, it's cool I'm just not that into this kind of music.

funkyyyyyyyy and jazzyyyyy my bf would listen to this

Favorite is track 1, "Back at the Chicken Shack".

Rock organs have such a cool sound. Back At The Chicken Shack starts as it means to go on, very cool. Good Sunday morning coffee music.

Um bom álbum instrumental

Nice smooth jazz for background listening. Listened to on the road and was pretty nice for driving but a little sleepy at times.

Not a big Saxophone lover.

I mean, it's jazz. I don't know how to rate this, because it just sounds like jazz. Is it good? I don't know! is it bad? No clue! If you've heard jazz before, you've heard this album. I'm sure that's incredibly reductive analysis, and if someone who actually *knows* jazz reads this they're fuming at what an uncultured moron I am. In terms of rating, it's fine. 2 seems harsh, 3 seems inflated (considering some of the other albums I've rated a 3). I'd give it a 2.5 if I could.

Pretty straight cut. Really nice, easy listening. Not completely my thing but I appreciate it for what it is.

Slow bluesy jazz. I don't mind it, but it isn't doing all that much for me.

Great instrumental music but not my style to listen to!

Really enjoyed this in a background type of music way but unlikely to put it on again

First track was excellent, but overall found the album to be nice, but not exceptional

Cool jazz with some hints of funk and soul. Need to listen a little bit more.

#66. Listening to this album it makes me wish I was sitting in the garage with the door open, a cigarette in one hand, and a beer or three in the other during a heavy rainstorm. I couldn't tell you why, but that's what's what. 3/5: acceptable

A little too low key

3/5. I really liked this album where the more 70s electronic keyboard meets classic jazz. It would’ve been a 4 star rating had the album just been a bit lengthier.

This was nice enough to listen to but it didn't really grab me in any way.

Nice and chill Hammond organ dominant jazz

Very smooth instrumental jazz. Relaxing. Favorite Track: Back at the Chicken Shack

Cool tunes but kind of background music for me.

If I’m at a coffee shop or restaurant and they’ve got this music going on, I know the food is going to be good. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Minor Chant Rating: 3

Nice, easy listen. Can't say I was really into it, but Jimmy Smith is the king of the Organ.

ITS JAZZ

Unfortunately the organ use in jazz really does not do much for me, so much of this album lost its appeal for large chunks. I did enjoy the saxophone bits quite a bit though. 5/10

Jazz piano. A fun listen, upbeat.

Smooth, bluesy and easy listening jazz. Similar easy accessibility as Booker T, but more smooth jazz than r&b.

Not my style

This is the first album I’ve gotten that I didn’t have a strong opinion on, so it’s getting a 3/5 for neutrality. I’m not well acquainted with jazz, so I struggle to see the greatness of this record, but I think that is part of my limited scope on it. A lot of it sounds cliche, but that may be a result of being from 1963. It’s also all instrumental, and I have a better handle on sensing what good songwriting is than good instrumental writing. I will say that it sounds like good dinner party music. But should that be my criteria for what makes an album worthy of being on this list? I wish their were more information available about its impact or legacy, but sadly, I couldn’t find any. If I knew, I may be able to form some actual opinions.

Shades of Booker T and the MGs. Fun, but not essential listening. Well done but not ground breaking.

The cover art gave me Peter Tosh Legalize It vibes at first and I got worried. This turned out to be pretty good jazz all around.

Pretty smooth and calm.

The title track was fun and interesting to listen to, something I’d heard before but never the whole album. Jazz just isn’t really ever what I want to listen to.

Not terrible. Not my thing and a lot of the same

It's not often you hear that much organ music in blues. Kinda interesting. I mighta listen to it again. Don't know when.

3/5 nice grooves

🤷🏻‍♂️

Very chill, I enjoyed it as background music

Really enjoyable grooves from the 60's

wayyy too long. do not have the attention span for a 12 minute song w no vocals

Fine sound

Solid jazz record. Nothing more nothing less

Instrumental, bluesy, good vibe

After immersing myself in the soulful, water-like textures of Jimmy Smith's Hammond organ, I can confidently say that Back At The Chicken Shack is the ultimate "vibe" record. It’s a masterclass in soul-jazz that feels like the sonic equivalent of a warm, dimly lit room or a late-night drive where everything finally feels in sync.

I enjoyed this quite a bit, although some of it gave me flashbacks of high school jazz band.

I enjoyed this. I’m not a huge fan of jazz yet, but I love the blues. This was a good mix.

That was cool! I didnt know of Jimmy Smith. Solid Organ player, very jazzy album lol. Can't pretend like i know the intricacies within jazz that qualifies this as a must listen, but it was enjoyable and fun to play along w too.

Having never heard of Jimmy Smith and not knowing what to expect, hearing how smooth the keys start on "Back At The Chicken Shack" was SUPER pleasing. Jazzy af and kinda "soulful" and "churchy" because of the tone of the keyboard. It reminded me of like a sermon you'd hear at a big church with the guy saying "PRAISSEEE THE LAWWDDDD" accentuated by the keys everytime I def enjoyed the listen, would I go back to it? Maybe, it probably has a space on my easy listening or weekend cleaning playlist.

It’s nice but I’m just not as into instrumental jazz as I wish I was

Fijn album.

This album has a cool vibe to it that I enjoy. Organ-based jazz funk music.

I like this, not my usual jam but a good change and definitely interesting to listen to and enjoy during a meal

-never heard of this guy but i love the album name and cover -this guy looks like be knows what tf is UP -jazzy sort of instrumental to start the album off which is nice -see, this would be a great album to get if i really loved jazz (i don’t really love jazz) -and thats fine! jazz is great music! just not what i personally really like -so in my opinion, this album is kinda boring. and i wouldn’t really listen to it again -does that make it bad? NO! -it sounds cool tho. i will give it that -so for that, it gets a 3 -cause a 2 feels too harsh for this. its just jazz

So it's a blues album? First track donnt sound too half bad. So it's all instrumental? Oh it's technically jazz. Jazz is fine. Yall gotta really blow me away like miles Davis

Not very exciting but perfectly listenable jazz. Hammond organ brings a cool element. Wish the drums weren’t so quiet in the mix.

Straightforward jazz album. Good if you’re into that sort of thing, I suppose.

Accessibility is good but maybe too much so, after a time I felt like I was doing Xmas shopping at the mall

Light blues, very chill

It’s just jazz

Pretty tasty jazz, not exactly the style of jazz that I like, but still excellent. The keys are especially soothing and nice.

Other reviews said “dinner party” and I agree - the best kind of dinner party

No vocals, only jazz instrumental, but quite nice.

very jazzy very sauveee

So much hammond

Solid jazz, enjoyed the organ but got a little monotonous with the one instrument

Excellent! Good flow

Not really a jazz guy, but this was OK. Tuned out the surroundings on my bus journey.

There's nothing wrong with this album, but I don't really believe it's one of the albums I need to listen to before I die.

Alright, just instrumental

I really liked that version of Sunnyside of the Street

back at the chicken shack - 68 when i grow too old to dream - 75 minor chant - 71 messy bessie - 74

Easy Listening. Feel like I’m in the Sandlot with background music.

Cute backgrounds music when you clean the house, or if you want a vintage bar atmosphere

Quite a funky chicken shack.

A showcase for the virtuoso organ skills of Jimmy Smith, especially the memorable and familiar title track. Thereafter some of the noodling on other tracks goes on a bit too long and it is easy to lose attention.

I like how silly the whole thing is. Definately sounds like it’s been licensed out to channel 4 for all their kitchen related idents in the 2000s

I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't organ-led jazz

First jazz record, took me long enough smhhh. At least the record gave me is great tho

A nice enough album, makes for great background music when working or having a dinner party. Not particularly memorable if you're not a jazz fan.

I do love some jazz, and thankfully this is a new album for me. While it wasn't up there with the best i've heard, it was pleasant enough. The organ was a nice change to have as the lead instrument, not often you get to see that. Glad I got to listen to it though, whole album went by before I even realised.

I don’t love jazz, but this was very pleasant to listen to and made for good background music while I did some work.

I liked this a decent amount more than I thought. It was quite chill, I don't know what Jimmy Smith was on, but the keyboards stood out most to me and was my favorite part of this album. Overall would listen to again.

Very 60s babbity with added seaside organ

Really light and jazzy. Not a bad time killer

This is a seminal album in the evolution of a mode of keyboard music that I find pleasant, which earn it this piffling middle score. But love is not too much to ask for! Si, have listened to “Desire” once, liked it quite a bit, especially the opener. Will listen to some more!

Never heard of this guy, but I did know the title track. Cool swing/jazz vibe but tunes go on way too long. Probably taught Booker T and his MGs a thing or two, and quite a few soul groups as well

I spent a lot of my youth wanking in the back at The Chicken Shack. Was it mayonnaise? Was it my jizz? That was why so many customers kept returning. It's good to keep a bit of mystery. It was my jizz.

... because the chicken play The Blues. 3/5

Strong 3 cool organ just not in the mood

Pleasant jazz album. Little bland

Drove my Chevy to the levy

Perfect jazz for chilling on a sunny summer's afternoon. Pity I was stuck in the office.

good jazz record. really liked it

I find instrumental albums a bit boring. This album is packed with great musicians playing typical jazz progressions. It would make a great jamming album for practicing jazz comping, or nice background music at a supper club.

Cool stuff.

The extensive use of the Hammond breathes new life into what would otherwise have been merely a traditional jazz album. The organ lends a huge amount of funkiness and I liked it.

Jimmy Smith's "Back at the Chicken Shack" should not be confused with Jimmie's Chicken Shack, which is not a jazz album or a drive-thru fried chicken establishment, but rather the one-hit wonder behind 1996's "High," off "Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope." Ok, yes, Jimmie's Chicken Shack is an awful band name. And, yes, "Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope" is a slightly humorous pun but also a terrible album name. Alright, and I'll give it to you, their hit song's constant refrain of "What does it take to get you high/ What will it take to get me high/ What does it take to get us high/ Whatever it takes to get you High" is pretty groan-inducing. But Jimmy Smith's entry on the list today made me think of JCS, and I went back for a listen and, not only did I remember much of the album well, I've gotta say I didn't hate it. I also didn't hate "Back at the Chicken Shack." It was decent jazz.

Basic jazz organ for white people

I'm glad to say this landmark and highly influential album is is part of my Bluenote vinyl collection. His influence here is huge as he has a totally original sound with the prominent use of the Hammond B-3 and you can hear the transition from hard bop jazz to 60's Soul music.

1/5, 20%

Good fun this one

Not exciting

This was a decent jazz album. Pretty short but still able to seem entertaining and enjoyable. I recognized one cover one this album but none of the other songs. The jazz keyboard was easy to chill to and it was nice background noise. Not too sure how technically impressive this was but it seemed like old school jazz mixed with funky disco. Wouldn’t revisit this often but potentially. 6.1/10

pretty good. standard jazz fare. nothing remarkable but pleasant nonetheless. a generic jazz record.

The playing and improvisation on this album are impressive and the genre-bending heavy use of the Hammond organ is interesting. I can imagine this music being nice to hear played live at a jazz club or wine bar. Outside of that, I wouldn't personally seek it out but I appreciate the skill that went into it.

this is a wondaful idea

Nice relaxing jazz

I enjoyed this album very much. That doesn’t mean the album was good. I always tend to think any jazz is awesome, but this seemed a little plain. The background was incredibly simple throughout the album and, while, the sax was fantastic, it cannot make up for the fact that such a large part of what makes jazz great is lost on here. By no means was it a bad album. It was good, but it really could have been great. 3/5

This is one of those "its okay background music, but I'd never listen to it by choice albums". It gets a 3 for being fine. 5 stars for chicken shacks. This album title seriously made me hungry for a good chicken place. My town is blessed to have 2 but I gotta watch my weight for summer. *sigh*

Good jazz

An organ jazz album. Super nice dinner jazz vibes, very cool for something recorded in 1960. I can see how it bridged gaps, and important for history, but its not making my top 10 list.

It’s jazz. As with every jazz album so far I have a hard time getting into it and listening to the whole thing.

Serviceable, but not entirely the groundbreaking organ performance I expected. Did provide some nice easy listening this morning even if I don't see myself returning to it anytime in the future.

Good time , nice and groovy, not too long

Nice. Could do with a bit more of variation

One of the greatest Jazz organist on the planet.

That’s one vibey chicken shack. Not bad!

I prefer my jazz on the energetic/fast paced side, but this had it's moments. Good vibes all around.

Pretty good jazz

It’s an interesting Jazz exploration. One I never would’ve taken myself. It’s an easy listen and a tight 30ish minutes through its 4 tracks. Decent stuff.

Awesome jazz record. Loved the performances and the vibe.

It's nice, but music without lyrics will never be more than background music for me.

Organ — lung

Don't mind it for background/work music

Not my interest, but nice and easy listening. I do love the sound of the organ though.

Not for me. Fine.

eka biisi hyvä mood

Very jazzy. Has some interesting sections, but need to be in the right frame of mind to actually listen to. May need a couple more listens.

I wish I got jazz. This sounds great and I recognize why this would be a significant record worth hearing on this list. But it does nothing for me. And I wish I knew why.

3/5 This was really easy and smooth to listen to, man. I dug it, man. He's not just a cat man, he's a cool cat.

I wasn't looking forward to this after the garbage that's been selected lately (on top of it being jazz which I hate) but... It was okay! I actually kind of enjoyed it despite myself. Would I listen again? Maybe. Maybe.

It may well have been responsible for making the Hammond B3 the organ of choice for the decade, but beyond this it is nothing exceptional. Rather slow paced light jazz

The first song on Back At The Chicken Shack reminded me of Baby Elephant Walk and The Simpsons, so that was interesting. Then it settled into decent middling jazz, 3/5, could listen often without hating it.

I'm usually tepid about organs in jazz, but this was pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty good.

3/5. A fun jazz album that makes it stand out with the organ. Pretty good background music.

Smooth

Jazz aint too bad to have on in the background.

Very relaxing album and technically proficient. I don't know if I had to hear this album though.

Nice laid back grooves and a great r&b jazz vibe. Echoes of Booker T.

Enjoyed this album. Minor Chant was my favorite song.

Nice listen

-vibeyyyy -instrumentals not really my style, I respect it though

Mooie lyrics

Nice enough, certainly not too shrill or stressful. Cool grooves for sure but it didn’t really capture my attention, I almost put a podcast on half way through without thinking what I was doing.

Enjoyed

I wish I could hear Jimmy jamming on his organ a little better. I feel like the saxophone really takes over on these tracks and drowns him out. Still, it’s amazing stuff, just not personally a sax fan, so probably won’t go back to this album.

Classic jazz patterns, great for a summer day or relaxing background. A vibe for sure

Very organ-inclusive jazz, enjoyable.

very pleasant.

This is steady, tuneful and jazzy. Good to listen to for chilling. Not outstanding but still pretty good.

Still not a jazz fan

Absolutely fine album, great to have on in the background, but doesn't stand out too much.

Decent enough.

Pleasant, but not really a whole more to say. Nice to set a cozy, jazzy mood - not revolutionary but does it need to be?

Smooth and a very pleasing listen

Not a very exciting jazz album but pleasant enough.

Fun and light bluesy jazz - nothing too memorable but will put you in a good mood if you put it on.

It’s okay

Pleasant jazz. Something that could be playing in the background at a chill café while talking to friends. But that's about it. Not much personality, not much to grab attention, nothing to really remember when the track has finished.

Nice sounding Jazz, very chill. I may be spoiled with things like Miles Davis on this list so this comes up a bit short for me in comparison, but still very nice.

Vibes all the way through! It does raise concerns, though, as I feel like this does not qualify for being on this list. It is great, but not too unique

- Schön Melodisch - Bisschen Jazzig meine ich - Groovy

Niceeeee

Nice lounge jazz Amazing bagground music

It made good background noise while cooking.

Like other albums of this genre: Nice and interesting to hear, but nothing more

Chill plodding along Jazz

Finger lickin good

jazz pajerillo, it's OK

Not bad for Jazz

some jazz

Pretty good jazz album. I liked it but it didn't hold my attention. 3/5

Was fine. Sounds like 70’s jazz.

I have been listening to this record today while I work, and it has been a perfect album for that. It's smooth and funky, unobtrusive, and happily chugs along. I enjoyed. So many imitators have reduced this genre to a cliche, but this is the real deal. I like this story from the BBC review: "The recently-departed Jimmy Smith, originator of the 'soul jazz' Hammond Organ genre, was such a spectacular success for Blue Note at the time of these recordings that label founder Alfred Lion admitted years later that the profits from Smith’s hits kept the company afloat for an extended period. Lion also once jokingly told his wife that he often considered selling off Blue Note around this time - just so he could become Smith’s tour manager; ‘that way,’ he explained, ‘I could get to watch him play every day’." Amen, brother.

Solid album, played like a really cool set without any distinguishing tracks. I thought it was really well produced and mastered - just nothing jumped out. Im sure this is an important record for the genre but I haven't done enough digging for context. I would definitely return to this album. Standout Tracks: The entire album

Great background music to throw on while working, reading, or another similarly passive activity. I would never sit and actively listen to this style of jazz, but its got a strong enough groove to avoid getting stale before the end. The incorporation of that organ really helped this album stand out from other songs I've heard in this genre (which is an admittedly small sampling). Standout tracks: "Back at the Chicken Shack"

I feel like this album all sounds the same Some really good piano and guitar on this, but I found it to all sound very similar to each other. I also like the drum work on this too 5/10

Decent

Can we take a moment to respect the fact that 60-70 years ago, it was totally cool to call your album “The [amazing/ incredible/ magnificent/ unbelievable/ strongly positive adjective] [Name]”? Nowadays, the only person who dares compliment themselves so highly is Kanye West, and we all side eye him a bit for it. Anyway, I enjoyed this! I like jazz but I find it slips into the background for me after a few minutes. However, whenever my attention was brought back to the music, I liked what I was hearing.

we really do be back at the chicken shack tho

I do struggle with instrumental albums in the foreground. That being said, this album was not too difficult and had a Down home sound that I quite enjoyed. Definitely would put it on in the back, but probably won't intentionally seek it out to listen to with full attention.

Ei pahaa sanottavaa, nautinnollista ja letkeää.

Varsin toimivaa! Menee jazz-listalle

Instrumental y un tanto plano. Mucho saxofón. Para amantes del jazz clásico

Expert playing. I've just never (since childhood) been a fan of the sound of the organ. It's too intense and takes up such a wide space in the listener's ears. The instrument equivalent of a pushy person.

Smith's playing is so light and economic - a rarity in a lot of jazz - but feels like he's in danger of taking a back seat in his own band.

Jimmy Smith is a notable soul jazz artist. Soul jazz came about around the time of cool jazz and bebop, incorporating melodies and rhythms from Gospel and R&B. This allowed for the genre to grow, influencing the soon-to-be genre of hard bop which would also take inspiration from gospel and R&B. Jimmy Smith's play in all of this was his fantastic organ skills, which almost certainly pulls from Booker T's "Green Onions" here. Smith also gives Stanley Turrentine time to shine on alto sax, smooth as ever. Turrentine is can also be found playing with Abbey Lincoln, Duke Jordan, and Kenny Burrell on some fantastic jazz records. Speaking of, Burrell is the man on guitar for this record, doing a fantastic job of keeping things held down. Lastly we have Donald Bailey rounding out the quartet on drums. He's a steady swing while also adding personality to the track. He compliments the boys very well while also keeping time. Overall this is a short but sweet collection of jazz tunes that are done excellently.

Smooth lounge jazz. Amazing background music, but not the kind of thing I would just listen to. Kind of remind me of being on hold.

one laid-back shack

Well, its smooth long-form organ jazz and that's pretty much the album summed up. Excellent BGM but I can't imagine ever really feeling the urge to listen to this specifically over just typing "smooth jazz mix" into youtube.
