Reviews (page 5 of 13)

The fact that this is the album with Helplessly Hoping on it meant that I knew it was going to be good. Was not disappointed. Great tunes all the way through.

While this is a lot softer than I usually enjoy, I cannot deny the quality in each song. I have a feeling my girlfriend will be keeping this in rotation for a long time too.

Vraiment très sympa, tranquille. On se régale pendant 52 minutes

Good album throughout Standout songs: Wooden Ships Long Time Gone

I quite enjoy this, probably not a 5 but better than an 3...if only there was a number in-between the them. I found a few tracks a tad annoying but overall very pleasant easy listening

The songwriting and harmonies on this album are on another level. Songs like Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Wooden Ships, Long Time Gone…they make me feel nostalgic for a time that was before I was even born. And then there is Helplessly Hoping with the alliterations in the verses and the building harmonies in the chorus…amazing stuff. I’m giving this a 4 only because there are a few tracks I didn’t connect with like the ones I mentioned earlier.

Standout Songs: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes You Don't Have To Cry Pre-Road Downs Wooden Ships Long Time Gone

I listened to the remastered version. It’s amazing how men from such different places in the world can make such pretty music.

Only heard Judy Blue Eyes from this album before. Oh yesssss, perfect soundtrack for a sunny day 4/5

Great harmonies. Duh

These guys could harmonise, way before the days of auto-tune!

This wasn't bad! In fact, it was quite good!

Very pleasant!!

Beautiful voices and nice songs

no shocker that i love this one ... always loved the harmonies on this album... just good freakin vibes

Really enjoyed it. Perfect album with which to start the day.

Very good album, powerful harmonies and amazing guitar work. Not connecting enough with the lyrics to give it a 5 but very good.

Great album, have always enjoyed this one.

Back when cannabis was smooth and mild, and the dealers were genteel, ruthless hippies.

I've just been getting a steady list of solid 60's rock albums lately. 4/5.

Crystalline isn’t a word that should be used too often but these harmonies are. Suite and wooden ships are monster songs. Marrakesh less so. Peak hippy shit.

Fav: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes Least Fav: Lady Of The Island Just as good without Neil Young involved

Buenos tiempos de guitarra y reuniones campestres, cervezas y...Estuvieron siempre invitados

83/100. Crosby, Stills & Nash’s self-titled debut is a great, chill record, centered around themes of love and personal reflection. Their harmonies and songwriting shine, making this a very strong debut for these three legendary musicians.

I was expecting some kind of lame singer songwriter mostly acoustic thing, but this rocks. Vocal harmonies on point. Songwroting is fantastic. Great instrumentals. I would have mixed it heavier but there is a lot here. I hear a lot of what influenced some of my favorite artists. Potential to be a 5 but needs a lot more listens for that. 4.5, I round down. 1=Crap that shouldn't be here 2=I didn't like it but get why it's here 3=I thought it was ok or even like it, get why it's here, but won't revisit 4=I like it, will revisit 5=This is some of the best music I've ever heard and will continue listening to it

Classic

we are one person we are two alone we are three together we are for each other 😭😭😭😭😭😭 3.5 because i like deja vu better

I liked it

This is a classic album from a classic era, with flashes of brilliance and flashes of "aww, that's a nice song." It's a testimony to the 60s, and to the talents of these three guys, that the counterculture could lie down so peacefully with more traditional sounds and sentiments. Still, as great as these guys are together I can't help but wonder what it would be like if Stephen drafted his former bandmate Neil Young to join the group. I think Neil would add just the edge needed to put them over the top. *** For brilliance, see: "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Wooden Ships." For nice, check out "Helplessly Hoping." For a head-scratching "huh?" check out "Marrakesh Express" - why was this a single, exactly? Also, for purists OR those in a hurry... Note that the original track listing ended after 10 songs. The remaining 4 are bonus tracks.

This album is delight from the first notes of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes all the way to the end. And even though the album is a little uneven, it feels right, with the peaks hitting throughout at just the right moments. And, oh, the harmonies!

This is an amazing folk rock album! I love so many of these songs and am definitely listening to this album again. Such great voices and harmonies and the songs are catchy and gorgeous! I would 100% recommend this album to others!

More of the hipster avengers, before Young would join the crew, I assume. But I think I enjoyed this more than the 1970 Young featuring record. The simpler nature of the harmonies, playing, and writing made everything feel more personal and tranquil, like you're camping out in a small cabin with these three guys you found in the woods. You'll still get a groovy psychedelic cut here and there, like with 'Long Time Gone' and 'Wooden Ships', but from the very opening 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes', the band makes sure to establish this very warm and cozy shell to encapsulate the listener in, and it works really well. Nothing here is abrasive; nothing strays too far from this pattern - it all just cruises by nicely and painlessly. Great listen.

Oh yea. This is great! These guys are so classic. Great harmonies.

A great collection of classy folk rock tunes. Nothing groundbreaking, but all the songs spark good feelings of nostalgia and comfort.

I know this one well. It's great to give it another listen. Great songwriting, incredible vocal harmonies, just beautiful textbook folk rock. Super influential, super great music. Wouldn't crack my personal top 100 probably though, so four stars.

I appreciate how they “keep” their own sound but really the songs aren’t that distinct from each other, it’s really the songwriting that’s a little different. Not actually a bad thing I just expected something else. The harmonies and instruments didn’t help, the formula got a bit old fast but it works really well for a few tracks. OaARaT: 7.5/10, there’s some really good songs off it but, the album in general, it’s good, could be better.

Nice folk

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes

fuck it, we're putting 7 names on the bill

8/10 Could use some Neil but we love some harmonious boys

Haven't ever listened to Crosby, Still and Nash before-- for some reason, in my head I had an expectation of more "rock". Enjoyed it though, kind of reminded me of Simon and Garfunkel but with slightly less interesting vocals.

Favorite Track: Marrakesh Express

Still no idea who these chaps are; never heard a note of this and I'm now convinced you're all making stuff up about remembering them. I quite like this one though!

Songs I’d already heard: Judy Blue Eyes New Faves: Guinevere; Wooden Ships

These guys immediately sounded so good harmonizing together that it's sometimes hard to remember that each of them were actually already established stars with other groups. Some beautiful, timeless stuff here.

It was good post sesh music

Great, chilled music, and nice harmonies

Favorite tracks: Judy Blue Eyes Marrakesh Express Helplessly Hoping

The harmonies! Suite Judy Blue Eyes is traditionally the song I first put on to try any new audio equipment, but I had never given the full album a listen. Solid but dated and a little messy and amateurish by modern standards.

1 extra star for the song Wooden Ships which is why the band Wooden Shjips exists

It was nice.

I love Helplessly Hoping. I can now appreciate how great they individually are as musicians. Certainly not my go-to for music, but I greatly apprecaite it.

Some absolute all timers and some a little more boring but a classic for a reason.

I discovered this album in university and still listen from time to time. Suite Judy blue eyes is an unreal opening song on a debut album and always reminds me of them at Woodstock. Fantastic.

great album overall. my favorites are guinnevere, wooden ships and long time gone. 3.8/5

It was pretty good, there’s a reason these three sound so good together.

significantly better than the csny album or any of the solo albums i've heard from them

Classic album. Suite Judy blue eyes and helplessly hoping are all timers but I hadn’t really heard much of the rest of the album. The spectrum spans classic 60s rock with warm guitar tones to folky acoustic tracks like wooden ships. The latter really reminded me of Simon and Garfunkel. Overall a fun listen and not too long.

3.75 star so im rounding up. Didn't grip me bit I don't hate it

Random thoughts: * Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is underrated. What a great tune! * I don't love Marrakesh Express but apparently it was the hit song off this album. * I didn't realize that Everybody's Talkin' is a cover song. The Harry Nillson version feels so definitive. * Weird to hear an early version of Teach Your Children. The CSNY version is the one we all know.

Always enjoyed Suite: Judy Blue Eyes in particular. Even the Spanish gibberish at the end. The singing's excellent on the entire album.

I've never heard of these guys so it was nice to listen to something new. Feels very folksy. Reminds me of the Beatles with a cross of like Simon & Garfunkel. I enjoyed the album.

1969, this album is exactly what beckons the sounds of the late 60's. Harmony and jammin with social presence. The Byrds x Buffalo Springfield

Certainly one of the greatest singing groups of all time. Perfect harmonies and while I dint think all the sings in this recording are classics, I like it enough to give it an overall rating of a 4.

I really enjoyed this record. Perfect for sunny days. I wanna go on bike rides while listening to this. Fav songs : Marrakesh Express & Hopelessly Hoping

Familiar with many of these songs, which shows how classic they are.

So many hits...classic album from that era.

Harmonies are unparalleled

Harmonies, harmonies, harmonies!

Also team harmonies

would i actively listen to this? no. did i surprisingly REALLY like it? YES!!!! this was such a cute lil album and was lowkey peak 60’s music. i don’t really have much to say about this one, it was pretty straightforward. country meets rock. 4/5!

I was not expecting to like Crosby, Stills & Nash because I assumed they would sound similar to The Band (who I despise) and because of their affiliation with Neil Young (who I also despise). Wow was this a pleasant surprise!

Albumi #179, 18.03.2025 Crosby, Stills & Nashin debyyttialbumi vuodelta 1969. Hyvän meiningin folk rockia. Lauluharmoniat tuovat mieleen Simon & Garfunkelin ja sävellyksellisesti tämä albumi on takuulla viitoittanut mm Fleet Foxesin tietä.

3.75/5 nice chill album, enjoyed it

Always confuse this with CSNY but this is also a bona fide classic

Childhood memories of parents playing

Folksy

A masterpiece.

One of the best folk rock albums out there. I'm a sucker for good vocal harmonies, and this is full of them.

This album is pure 60s folk-rock bliss, drenched in rich harmonies and mellow, sun-drenched melodies that practically radiate flower power. The vocal blend of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash is undeniably gorgeous, creating a lush, peaceful atmosphere that makes tracks like Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Helplessly Hoping feel timeless. The instrumentation is warm and intricate, balancing acoustic delicacy with moments of electric energy, and the production has just the right amount of polish to let everything breathe. It’s an album that feels both deeply personal and effortlessly expansive, capturing a moment in time when music was all about harmony—both musically and ideologically. And yet, something about it just feels like it’s missing that extra spark to push it into masterpiece territory. Maybe it’s the absence of Neil Young, whose grit and unpredictability might have added just the right amount of tension to offset the smoothness. The songs are undeniably beautiful, but they stay very much in the same mellow lane, never quite taking the risks that could have elevated the album further. Still, for what it is—a dreamy, impeccably crafted folk-rock record—it’s hard to fault it too much. It’s lovely, lush, and deeply soothing, even if it feels like it’s just one ingredient short of being truly legendary.

More of a steely dan guy tbh

This is a very warm feeling psych album. I'm hearing lots of different influences in there all from bands that I enjoy. I also realized that Wooden Shjips got their band name from the song Wooden Ships on this album.

Ah yes, the days of great harmonies and beautiful lyrics. Just like Simon & Garfunkel, these guys had a great connection for beautiful music.

Wasn't expecting a whole lot going into this but I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would which was a pleasant surprise Standout tracks are Marrakesh Express and Long Time Gone

beautiful! a few remarkable songs, I will listen to this again for sure :)

A perfect album. The California sound long before The Eagles, Jackson Browne, etc. claimed it as their own (or at least Rolling Stone magazine did) & years before Mick Fleetwood discovered a young Stevie Nicks & her moody boyfriend, started selling millions of albums & every lifeform under 30 fell in love with Stevie Nicks. Some absolutely perfect songs (the first 3 songs on the album are nearly as perfect a trio as any 3-song album opener has ever been) but the harmonies got on my nerves- I don't know why as I adore The Beach Boys and harmonies in general but by the end of side two, I was feeling a tad violent. Is there such a thing as too perfect? I don't know. Maybe but likely there isn't, 'Pet Sounds' is absolutely perfect and almost as good as The Beatles at their very best but I digress. I want to give it five stars, I get how massively important this album (came out in the summer of 1969) was/is in shaping the music of the 1970s (at least in North America) but likely due to my own short comings I can't. I rated Tracy Chapman's debut album five stars yesterday & frankly this album is way better but IMO a 5-star album shouldn't get on your nerves, and it certainly shouldn't make you feel violent. I feel like an asshole or like that Robert Christgau fellow. Same difference- I guess.

-1 full star for musical quality. -1 half-star for catchiness. -1 half-star for a good mix of different song types. -1 full star for interesting lyrics. -1 full star for innovation, no one sounded like these guys except The Byrds at their time. Overall: 4 stars.

Wonderful

Es isch mega schön, wirds no paar mol lose.

ohni young?? wow die singed so schööön zemeee. bass super. orgelgiti au. düdüdüdü mega nice. ich ha e sehr gueti ziit. marrakesh express ebe au fire. sehr cool ha gmeint meh orientalism aber super. guinnevere seeehr schön sie singed würkli krass guet zeme. you dont have to cry isch wieder suuper mega simon garfunkel? hammer. wooden ships sehr speziell mit hallou etz singi rechts und etz links hallooou. okay nai die dumpf gitarre isch cool es tönt suuuper. helplessly hoping isch seeehr cool. long time gone INSANE bass WHAT. das isch sowas vo es vieri.

I enjoyed this, the three of them are great songwriters and performers

all great great songs

****An excellent album

Nice album

Kósý.

Quite good! Softer than I expected. Nice vocal harmonies. 3.75

How have I never heard this before???

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Extra special.

Love the harmonies. There's northing like Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Liked Songs Added: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes Wooden Ships Helplessly Hoping Long Time Gone

8 Thoroughly enjoyable folk-rock with wonderful harmonies. Best track: "Helplessly Hoping" Mellow. Melodic. Reflective.

Gives off a very 70s vibe, like something you would listen to on the radio while you're playing with those old types of action figures. It gives off this nostalgic vibe, if anything their sound somewhat reminds me of New Order but more positive. Guess I could also compare it to the Beatles or Billy Joel, that style of music. The only critique that I had with the album is that the songs are somewhat blended together, if you told me to pick a favorite song out of the album I probably would choose Song with No Words, cuz it has no words. Their writing isn't bad or anything, Teach your children has a good message and you can understand it if you listen closely to the lyrics, but I can't think of any other standouts. Overall it's a pretty nice listen, highly suggest it if you're a Beatles or Billy Joel fan, or if you really enjoy 70s music.

Absolutely gorgeous. Sounds incredible soft to the ears. What a pleasant experience!

There are some really good tracks in here- a bit samey in places and understated but a real slow burner. Some really lovely songs.

You know you’re in safe hands with Crosby, Stills & Nash. Polished, great songwriting and lovely harmonies.

A good album, I like Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Long Time Gone the most. But overall a great listen and a fun music style.

Love the harmonies. Very American sounding. I hear where fleet foxes might get some inso from guinnivere. Lovely album, sounds like home.

Unparalleled sense of harmony. Glad I got to see them live at Lincoln Center years ago.

It’s good! Good tunes, good performances. I’ll need to listen to this one more, but it’s staying in my library for sure. And it’s a must-listen, if nothing else, due to the introduction of three great songwriters. M-L #68.

Our group has been shitting on the various CSN/etc albums because it seems like there are just too many of them in the 1001 list. But I'm a sucker for the harmonies this trio puts together. I marked 4 songs from this album as favorites, so that's good enough for a 4-star: "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "Helplessly Hoping", "Song with No Words", "Everbody's Talkin".

27/1001 Crosby, Stills & Nash’s debut album is such a pleasant listen. It’s combination of folk and rock is truly inspired with classics such as Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Helplessly Hoping clinging to the more folksy end of the spectrum, while outstanding tracks like Long Time Gone and Wooden Ships let’s the guitar be more in focus, it just mixes and combines so well. 4/5

Holds up quite well. I would have been super into this when it came out

Despite CSN (and Y, after this album) being one of my dad's favorite bands, I can honestly say I've never sat down and listened to an entire album of theirs from start to finish. Unsurprisingly, I knew quite a few songs on this one, and obviously I'm well acquainted with the sound. Still, I was pleasantly surprised how good this album is. I don't think it's necessarily a masterpiece, but it's very good musicianship with some great guitar playing, interesting rhythms, and nice harmonies (though not as masterful as some make them out to be). Overall a very solid album that was heavily influential and deserving of being on this list.

Pretty good, first experience with a late 60s album

Very relaxing and easy to listen to, liked it a lot despite it not being my cup of tea. It's a warm and melancolic album.

Enjoyed listening to this

Unfortunately has the 60's Stereo Curse, but otherwise is some pretty decent folk rock, according to Wikipedia. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

So dreamy :)

Unique rock sound, great first time listen. Not extremely impressive though

Classic album that we all grew up listening to. This album is a solid seven. But don't you ever ask why, if I told you, you would cry. So just look at the score and smile ...

Didn't know about the 70s movement of softer and quieter rock music, I'm a big fan of soft rock as opposed to the heavier and louder rock and roll genre. Easy listening, but faded into the background while I was working

Love it

Hmm, I took a short break from this project over Christmas- too many people around to listen properly. Then the first three days back it’s: Day 1 - Neil Young (On the beach) Day 2 - Joni Mitchell (Blue) Day 3 - this If I get a Dylan album tomorrow I’ll start making a tin foil hat… I quite liked this. First listen I included the bonus tracks from the remastered, but they add very little so hide them after that - certainly I much prefer the Beautiful South version of Everybody’s talkin’. It’s certainly a better album with those hidden. I particularly liked Wooden ships, Long time gone, and 49 bye-byes, but there’s lots of decent stuff here. Not quite a five, but close. It’s going to be Dylan isn’t it?

Ok. I knew the first two songs for sure. And I’m surprised how much I recognize of the other songs. I know I know the name wooden ships, but this song is not ringing a bell. I get that this album is a big deal. But listening now I realize I’ve heard it all at some point. It’s the soundtrack to the end of the 60s. So many of these songs were played for me by other people. This album really had a huge impact on people. The last song, “49 bye-byes” is really great.

classic beauty

Love their music

It’s good

The folk supergroup playing great songs in 3 part harmony. You'd have to have a heart three sizes t small to hate on this.

Damn, Neil Young is what makes this band worse. I don’t agree with the amount of albums on this list that feature one of these four guys, but this is the best one we’ve had so far. A pretty damn good album to listen to and have play in the background. Has just enough standouts to keep you interested. I would assume their other albums without Neil Young will be on the list and I’m honestly excited for them.

This is what Fleet Foxes wanted to be

Severely underated album

This cover photograph captures a candid moment of musical camaraderie, with the band casually seated on a weathered sofa that epitomizes the late 1960s aesthetic. The cover's strength lies in its unpolished authenticity - an impromptu snapshot that feels genuine rather than staged. While not a groundbreaking design, the image effectively communicates the band's laid-back folk-rock spirit. The muted color palette and relaxed positioning create an intimate mood, though the composition lacks the visual complexity of more sophisticated album artwork. It's a charming representation of the era, striking a balance between documentary-style photography and artistic expression. Album artworks rated: 23/1001 Music's fine

Wasn't expecting much from this one. But I really enjoyed it. I think I prefer CSN to CSNY. Great vocals and the music was good throughout. I'll be back to listen to this album.

Good songs to chill with Beatles vibe. Not so electric, it feels nice and good

Good album

Decent album! 4/5

Santa was good to me! I was happy to again hear this masterclass of fantastic songwriting and harmonies. The doo-doo-doo-doo-doo’s from Suite: Judy Blue Eyes stuck with me for hours afterwards. Helplessly Hoping has got to be up there with the greatest songs of its genre. A truly wonderful album.

Massivly satisfying debut from the harmonious trio. It may sound dated, but it's a lovely thing.

Solid album from a solid band. Another album that's been on heavy rotation in my vinyl collection.

While Laurel Canyon birthed CSN's sophisticated debut, its true spirit found me thousands of miles north, where their pristine harmonies perfectly scored a winding drive through Donner Pass and Tahoe's alpine grandeur.

After listening to a CSNY album, I can hear why these guys and young were better off doing their own thing. This is a lovely album with great harmonies.

folk music sounds so good when you ain’t got a bitch in ya ear impersonating carl wheezer…no but seriously this was great. very touching. i like that a bunch of the songs are sexy, only with a kind of sly, subtle tone. i think it's funny and very of the time but in a nice way. and i like the lyrics very much. fav tracks: suite judy blue eyes; guinnevere; song with no words

Oops I forgot to write my review and give it a rating when I actually listened to it and now I forgot. But I remember enjoying it very much and finding it very pretty. Fav tracks: Guinnevere, Pre-Road Downs, Everybody’s Talkin’, Teach Your Children

Easy to listen too, like a familiar piece of cozy clothing. First song is the most interesting and best.

Pretty good. I’m pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this. This album probably sounds great on a good stereo.

Soo good! Beautiful harmonies and complex arrangements, very nice stuff.

Suite Judy Blue Eyes is a 5+ Star song. I used to hate it, but now it’s a favorite. The rest of this album is very good, but too same-y for 5 stars. Deja Vu blows this overall album out of the water.

Pretty good overall. Chill. Their harmonization is incredible.

Love the vocal harmonies. A bit slower paced than I generally prefer, but objectively very good.

Chill, pleasant folk music. Stand-out: Marrakesh Express

It's a fine older album. Not my favorite but still solid enough.

A good album. Solid instrumentals and a few that stuck with me. I didn't love the vocals, but they weren't negatively impacting my enjoyment of the album. 'Wooden Ships' was my fave here.

I always think I don’t like this trio (unless Neil is involved) but this is a great album. The hits are timeless classics that I’ve known since childhood. Even the deeper cuts are really interesting. I don’t always respond well to the three-part harmony on the vocals, but I have some respect for it. Hard to dislike this honestly

I am a sucker for a glorious harmony and this has them by the sackload. If they'd kept up the standard of the first couple of tracks, it would undoubtedly be 5 stars, but drops down to a 4 as there's some filler here for sure.

Very soothing to the soul

Yup, nice and simple, had this on in the car and enjoyed it

Erg nice. 3.5*

Een 4 voor de klassiekers

It's really unusual for me to love music that is this down tempo this much

This one’s about mood and harmony, which they hit. Didn’t set my world on fire but I did enjoy listening to it.

I knew the popular songs and those are great. There is a distinctive sound to them that is easy to enjoy. When they go solo, it seems to lose that special sound that makes them distinctive and listenable. It is certainly a time capsule of the time it was written and performed. I like the sound, but don’t know that another album would benefit this list. This could probably be enough.

鄉村開車的感覺,喜歡Guinnevere跟the lady on the island.

Really a 3 star album but I'm giving an extra star for not having Neil Young on the album.

Something about this was appealing to me. Just a generally nice vibe from this album.

Classic album for a reason. All of these guys could sit down and write a song, then they could all get together and play the shit out of it. So many songs on here are now embedded in the American music vernacular. More of a showcase than an album statement but, damn, as a group debut it's pretty awesome.

An interesting listen, because it seems very much to be a bridge from the 60s to the 70s. "Marrakesh Express" sounds like it could be from the Summer of Love, very hippy. And then "Guinnevere", the very next song, is dark, with beautiful harmonies, and seems reflective of the singer-songwriters that follow in the 70s. Some of these tracks go a bit into yacht rock territory, but there's enough mystery and melancholy on this album to make it compelling enough for me. Fav tracks: Marrakesh Express, Guinnevere, Lady of the Island

8/10 Nice easy listening Favourite Song=Suite: Judy Blue Eyes Least Favourite Song=Guinnevere

- 4/10 songs added to main playlist - I wish I liked folk a lot more than I do - Sounds very Simon & Garfunkel to me. But I guess that was the time - I guess I like folk for the vibes, just not my preferred genre - Love the guitar in Pre-Road Downs - Whoever is singing in Wooden Ships- love their voice more than the others - Favorite song: Wooden Ships

Easy listening, enjoyed it. 7/10

Pretty hard hitting album. 3.8 stars

some amazing songs on here such as the opening track which is phenomenal. Overall, an elegant and enjoyable listen that might not blow everyone away but it is sure a smooth and relaxing ride.

Love Crosby, Stills & Nash

The album was of its time. Uneven songs but very good. Pleasantly surprised by Crosby contribution.

Some truly great songs, but mostly ok. Lyrics are strong and it's a well produced album. Was expecting to be blown away, though.

Classic.

This album rocks harder than a folk rock album has any business rocking

4.3 - Just lovely and some really stunning songs. I think some were a little bit off and didn't stand up to the others.

One joy of this site is that you encounter bands and albums that you are familiar with but you haven't fully explored their catalog. I didn't think I would enjoy this album as much as most of my experience with it is from the radio hits. Listening to this album with fresh ears was a delight. While I don't think it is strong as Deja Vu, it is a real treat.

This album jams for me. Used to play it on my radio show. This is a five-star banger because of two songs: Suite Judy Blue Eyes and Wooden Ships.

love me a harmony especially if it’s coming from three bootcut jeans wearing men could play helplessly hoping on repeat 4eva

Not bad

Love the songs on this album; some are definitely better than others; great showcase of the Laurel Canyon sound

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is another strong contender for best first track from a debut album. Marrakesh Express is too goofy and light for me. I think Neil Young was the lynchpin for these guys not sounding like a precursor to the Eagles. Great voices. This is threading a very fine line between folk and folk rock so far. Wooden Ships, right in the middle of the album is a great album track. The straight folk songs are not as good. Helplessly Hoping is beautiful, maybe it's the lyrical content that's making me like some of the songs less because this folk music. The old timey English ballad lyrics leave a lot to be desired, on this album as well as in folk music in general. Long Time Gone is more rock, you can hear the rock, the blues, the psychedelic influences and the harmonies are great of course. Song with No Words is pretentious, hippie crap. Everybody's Talkin' is a terrific song and this is a great version, maybe better than the Harry Nilsson version. Super folk Teach Your Children is a good version too, I think I like the more produced version they did later, but this is good too, very stripped down.

Really enjoyed this style and will have to check them out more. Once again I find myself enjoying Neil Young in a group more than I do on his own.

Packed with classic CSN hits.

What initially promises to be a standard 60s/70s folk offering quickly exceeds expectations with a truly unique variation of songs. From upbeat snappy folk ditties to longer complex, soulful tracks - without their key asset in the form of Neil Young, the remaining three certainly held their own here.

If one could excise Guinevere and it's renaissance fair trappings it would elevate an otherwise formidable album. David Crosby - great voice. He could hit some home runs but also some misguided musical views. The three standouts from this album - Stills Judy, Nashs Marrakesh and crosbys cowriten (don't leave him to his own devices unchecked) wooden ships - all stand way out. Prog folk? Whatever it is - great musicianship, creative arrangements and the harmonies are top class. Everything else is solid with the exception of the aforementioned indignity. Enjoyed way bemore than I would like to admit.

Favourite song - Long time gone 3.5 stars

Decent album.

I am familiar with a few songs on this album- Suite: Judy Blue Eyes has long been a favorite driving song of mine. It was nice to get to hear the full album- the songwriting and tone really stands out. I like the lyricism, especially the use of alliteration and word play. Yhe album had lows and highs that were nice to move through. Overall- very enjoyable early "hippie rock" album.

Aw, I've always been fond of this one. Know it by heart.

Solid...still holds up over 50 years later.

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is just brilliant. Do-do-do-do-do, do, do, do-do-do-do Do-do-do-do-do, do, do, do-do

This is nice, I saw another reviewer called this comfy which I think suits. Just pleasant, unchallenging folky rock.

nice country/folk/blues from the late 60s

Can't help I was already introduced to most of this from my parents. Love the harmonies, and the instrumentation on lots of these. Sometimes, it gets a little samey, but on the whole, great. 4/5

Really enjoyable, but there were a few moments where the mixing seemed off and the vocals were too soft.

Was somewhat familiar, but better than I expected.

Good album.

This is a tough one - because I liked it A LOT more than I thought I would. It’s a 3.5 at least, but is it a 4? I don’t know. But I’ll say this much: I don’t know why they thought they needed to add Neil Young. I had a Neil Young and Crazy Horse album a couple days ago and this is miles better than that. Since I think I gave that one a 3, I guess I’ll give this one a 4.

Couldn't figure out why Spotify didn't have this, then I realized I hid this album years ago because I was tired of it being constantly recommended. Once I figured that out and listened, it's actually a pretty damn good album.

+ 0.5 for helplessly hoping

28.08.24

Pretty good and chill but does seem to go nowhere. 3.6

Pleasant. 4.

i loved it. a vibe.

I listened to this more times than I needed to. Songs 10-14 are kind of boring but the rest was great. I came across a Crosby Stills and Nash tour t shirt at some thrift thing, maybe I should’ve bought it. Also wasn’t Teach Your Children on Deja Vu?

A classic country rock album with some great tunes.

Enjoyed the harmony and lack of Neil Young.

really enjoyed this. guitar & tempos were nice and harmonies are fantastic. understand why this album is on the list (as opposed to SO many others)

Strong opening track and overall debut album for a fairly well known rock group that I don't claim to be familiar with. I don't know why, but CSN was just never a group I was exposed to. Could be that they're way before my time, but even then I tend to lean towards older rock music thanks to my dad or whatever is featured in pop culture via the way of video games and movies. There's some good folk rock here, and each member harmonizes very well with each other. Super reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel, but these guys certainly weren't nobodies in the rock industry at the time. Easy recommendation for those looking for something lighter in a sea of psychedelic and hard rock from the late 60s.

CSNY have been one of the highlights of this journey so far. Deja Vu hit me like a truck a few months ago and was the first record that went from 0 to vinyl in my collection. This first album is also excellent but doesn't quite hit the highs of deja Vu. Beautiful songs and melodies, with every track just burying with ideas and quality. Its missing some of the soaring guitars of Cut your Hair and Neil Young's grit in the pearl

Great album, knew and really like about half of the tracks on it. The rest are equally good. Nearly gets 5 stars.

It's got some classics on it, and it's a pretty good listen.

This album was a delight. Reminded me of Simon & Garfunkle. Lots of great harmonies and beautiful music. A little too slow at times and its definitely an album you'd listen to in a relaxed state of mind. Lyrics were great. I miss real lyrical talent in mainstream artists. I think that may be one of my biggest disconnects from modern popular artists

It was alright, helplessly hoping is a wonderful song and the guitar work was phenomenal throughout BUT it wasnt really my jam

Enjoyable, soft, older sounding than I would have thought haha.

Didn't realize they sounded this much like the beatles.

Did not expect to enjoy this one nearly as much as I did, but any pleasant surprise is a good one. Sugary harmonies and excellent vocal melodies backed with great guitar playing. I can see this one growing on me even more in the future.

The highs are really high on this one while the songs I have not heard are forgettable. Still a 4.

I came to a conclusion today. When looking at how everything had progressed up until that point in history, 1969 really seems like the year where everything we now know modern music to be came together and started actually formulating. I’m not trying to say nothing interesting was going on before this time period. But it is remarkable how many genre and industry defining albums released in those 12 months. Just to name them off, King Crimson and Nick Drake both released their debuts. Led Zeppelin put out their first two records. In a Silent Way, Abbey Road, Hot Buttered Soul, Let It Bleed, Karma, The Velvet Underground self-titled, Hot Rats, and Neil Young’s first album with Crazy Horse. Mind blowing. And along with these, David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash came together to record their debut as Crosby, Stills & Nash. I thoroughly enjoyed Déjà vu. But I worried that without the presence of Young, I wouldn’t enjoy this album nearly as much. It’s crazy to me that people actually think Neil Young brought the group down. I personally believe he only elevated it further. And “further” is the key word there. Because thankfully, this album doesn’t falter in the slightest from what made Déjà vu so amazing. This is just as good. This is still a collective of some of the strongest songwriters of the 60s. And their voices just fit together and harmonize so perfectly. It’s been a little while since I heard the album with Young, so my memory may be a little foggy, but I don’t recall it sounding as psychedelic as this does. That style, combined with the early blues sound makes this equally as important to the history of electric folk rock music. I’m so glad I liked this as much as I did. Because it would hurt me to low ball such a talented group of men just because one guy happens to not be present. Unfortunately, I’m too much of a Neil Young fanboy to help myself. Rating: 8/10

Many classic rock radio staples on here but I never heard the entire record until now. Not a fan - these tunes were part of what to me as an 80s teen felt like boomer nostalgia crowding out and overwhelming our youth culture - but respect the work and its influence. My favorite song was Pre-road Downs, largely because of the eminently humorous contrast of the lyrics with Stills' solo hit less than a year later, Love the one you're with. Both rely on gloves to make their points, too: - Felt forsaken, you'll awaken To the joys of livin' hand in glove And then I will lend you my will And your days will be filled with love Pre-road Downs was then convincing their "old ladies" to remain celibate while the band is out in the road for a year, and Love the one you're with is the tale from the road - and possibly very same tour - where the band is like fuck it, I can't wait that long: -Well there's a rose in the fisted glove And the eagle flies with the dove And if you can't be with the one you love honey Love the one you're with But back to CSN, and their very practical advice, which proved valuable to so many 70s kids: Don't run, the time approaches Hotels and midnight coaches Be sure to hide the roaches

I like CSN in general. This was a pleasant listen, but only Teach Your Children stood out. It also could have been shorter. CSNY was the better group

Older kids had copies of this when I was at school. I'd only really heard Suite Judy Blue Eyes. Nice album.

I hadn't listened to CSN before (that I can recall) but have certainly heard of them. I was probably most impressed with the vocal harmonies. Some of the guitar parts reminded me of some from the Grateful Dead.

Excellent album from an excellent trio!

One of my all time fav albums

Day177 - the first two songs are all time classics and i really enjoyed “long time gone”

Cmon boyssss. Helplessly hoping and guinnevere remain king for me, but this album is beautiful. Do think my listening on the tram may have messed with some of my perception of the songs (since the mix is sort of quiet) but that’s alright.

Good folk hippy music

I enjoyed Crosby, Stills & Nash by Crosby, Stills & Nash

Great folky, classic rock song. Never knew this band but their stuff sounds great and the lead has a good range.

I don’t think I like C’s songwriting as much as I like S and N’s. Strong album with a dud or two.

Super weird. Some strange lyrics in some songs. Really wanted to like it, but many were same soundy. Nothing really stood out, but not averse to it. One of the better ones.

Finally. Gave me something good.

Chadlessly Hoping

i don’t have much to say other than i really liked it

A great album with several clasic 60's songs

I should _love_ this. I like it a lot, but it's never quite made me love it.

Rich guitar and vocal tones with accompanied soft and tender rythmn sections. Lovely album, I've been a fan of this album for years. I do believe despite mixed reviews Neil Young was a better addition to the group in its later years.

Alright, another group I've heard of! This is certainly an album that you could argue for inclusion on the list. The group of Crosby, Stills, and Nash is pretty well known, and with this being their debut, one could say that these three artists coming together for the first time is enough for the album to be on here. The album also deserves to be on the list because it's quite good. I think this is a pretty solid album. It's very pleasant. The singing from all three guys is nice. The writing is alright. The sound is enjoyable. I have no reason to dislike this album, and plenty of reasons to like it. This is just a great folk rock album. There's not much else to say. 4/5.

Folk rock de los 70.

3.5 - the more times I hear it the more impressed I am with the musicianship. Overall it's still not quite my style, but this is an exercise in comparisons.

Day 26 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. I think there is a reason that Crosby, Stills & Nash never decided to do a band name, because they didn’t need to. They could stand out on their own but together they just lifted each other up. This album is perfect representation on that. It takes some influences of blues and folk to make a touching and unique piece of work. I do like knowing how influential this one album would be not just for other artist but CSN themselves and where they would from there. A great debut and pretty nice album.

A nice folky vibe. Nothing really sank its teeth into me, but it was enjoyable start to finish.

Once upon a time, I had long hair. I'm getting flashbacks to those times while listening to this. Humour aside, I find this album evokes a sense of nostalgia or sentimentality, of simpler or more hopeful times, possibly a - incomplete - reflection of when it was recorded.

I have been spoiled by CSNY and Buffalo Springfield

i have been spoiled by csny and buffalo springfield

Nice and comfy

The album I think about when I think about CSN.

I really wonder what it was like for people in 69 to hear such a dense album of hits with those harmonies as the Beatles were going away. It’s lovely. Only too familiar to get the five stars I use for the albums I come back to. They’re in heavy rotation everywhere else.

Tempted to give it a 5 for Guinnevere alone, which is one of the most beautiful and haunted songs I've ever heard. Lots of great tracks on here. Missing only Neil Young to make it a 5.

Amazing harmonies for days with this one, and I love it. Surprisingly intricate guitar work from Stills too. Strikes me as a Sunday brunch album.

Very good album. Easy listening. Classic.

Ornate at times but with the harmonies CSN is known for. A classic debut with wonderful songs.

It blows my mind every time I hear a debut album with this many big songs. There is no denying how good this band is. Few bands could harmonize like CSN. It’s just a question of whether or not you like this style of music.

Laid back, folky album with strong vocal harmonies that I always enjoy. I could just imagine lying on the grass at Woodstock and having the serene sounds of CSN floating over me, it really took me away to another place while I was listening. Also enjoyed their cover of Everybody's Talkin' from the bonus tracks

Beautiful harmonies and (usually) melodies in a much simpler and more focused album than Deja Vu. It’s hippie music but damn if I don’t like a lot of hippie music. Best song: Judy Blue Eyes

some of the best harmonizing ever. I usually go for Deja Vu when I listen to them but this album is solid as well.

Classic

This is just good classic folksy rock

Could’ve been higher but they don’t have the right version of teach your children on there

Tämähän oli varsin hyvä vaikken superkokoonpanojen suurin ystävä olekaan. 4/5

Hittibiisin ulkopuolellakin ihan solid 60-luvun kitaralevy.

Bloody pleasant. They should consider getting another singer/songwriter though - feels like CSN is missing something a bit grittier...

Good album

largely beautiful folk rock. Long Time Gone strays into bluesy electric guitar and is the albums only real miss for me. CS&N and their skill with harmony plays perfect foil to the unharmonious nature of Cream - Disreali Gears from last week. Marrakesh Express, Guinnevere, Lady of the Island, Helplessly Hoping, and 49 Byes-Byes are highlights. The backing vocals on 49 Byes-Byes' chorus play with the lead vocals in such a joyous way, all of the many melodies make this one of the great soft rock tracks ever. Helpless Hoping takes such a simple melody and works it up through harmony and layering into something captivating. Guinnevere is a hypnotic acoustic track, recalling (in my mind) a kind of medieval, bardic love song ("She shall be free-eee-eee-eee"). This has all the trappings of the Beatles or Beach Boys but much more traditional and folky than pop/rock. Truly pleasant to listen to.

I actually really liked this one. Beautiful harmonies! Not quite a 5 for me but really, really enjoyable. And oldie but a goodie :)

i really enjoyed this! it was like some peter paul and mary, simon and garfunkel, and even a bit of Yes combined into one pleasant album of top notch harmonies and beautiful acoustic guitar. i wonder what this would've have felt like to bring home from the record store and listen to for the first time with friends, sounds nice :) favorites: judy blue eyes, marrakesh express, guinnevere, wooden ships, helplessly hoping

Perfect harmonies. Nice calm relaxing folky rock

Great album, I feel the back half isn’t as strong as the front though

Crosby, Stills & Nash with some well-known songs.
