Reviews (page 10 of 13)
I usually avoid Neil Young because of overexposure to SDWG who covered many of Young's songs ad nauseum. This one was short. Neil has a whiny voice IMHO - but found a couple of songs on this album enjoyable.
Good listen. Third Neil Young album.
Neil Young bores me. never got it. This is fine though. wouldn't go back
I generally liked this, but it doesn’t compare to On the Beach. I liked Down By The River but it all sounds of it’s time, very 60s/Haight Ashbury rock. Cinnamon Girl was a great rocky opener and Cowgirl in the Sand was a good closer, very trippy. But nothing really stood out.
Very cool sound of guitars
"Ragged Glory" is a way better album from them, but this album confirms that Crazy Horse helps Neil Young achieve his finest. I liked it a lot, and I'm becoming a fan of Neil's rock-like work. I'll rate it with a 3, regretting a bit that I also rated "Ragged Glory" with a 3 in the past.
Not horrible, not exciting.
i'm not sure how often i'll find myself reaching for this to listen to but i did enjoy it! listened while plodding to work in the pouring rain and that felt like the right way. faves: down by the river, cowgirl in the sand
Hanging out with Neil Young up in the canyon? Count me in. It feels raw and emotional as intended. Not rehearsing too much and going in with the confidence and talent to accomplish this is great. There's something special about learning a group musically, and yo can hear that on this album, especially on the interplay of the guitars
Enjoyed it more than I expected. That violin in Running Dry was unnecessary, though. Still - grand old album.
After the first song played I thought I was going to love this album. It was good, but not my favorite type of music. I don’t think I’d search this up organically.
Easy listen, nothing special.
3.5 but I can't put four here, as much as I love down by the river
nice
Not my genre.
56/100
I can safely say I've now listened to enough Neil Young before I die. When will it end? This album was OK, I just really can't stand his voice.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed having this on in the background while I worked.
Not as bad as I feared. The longer songs “Down By the River” and “Cowgirl in the Sand” have extended musical passages which are quite interesting. The shorter songs are a bit facile, and, of course, his voice borders on atrocious. However, even if the songs were being sung by someone with an excellent voice, I still don’t think that I’d want to hear them more than once, with the possible exception of the two longer songs.
fun fun
Love me some Neil
Mid
Pretty solid.
Another ok album.
Raw, with a twinge of melancholy, yet very soothing
Unlike most of the young records, it struggles to differentiate itself from the rest of the stoned, dreamy, boomerish rock of the time.
I'm just not a huge folk fan. His lyrics are good and he plays well but it just doesn't grab me much. Feels very vanilla - i dont hate vanilla but I always want something more.
The mystery of Neil Young. Not sure why I like him but I do. Liked songs: cinnamon girl, Everybody Knows... And Down By The River.
it was good.
I thought the musicianship was good and the blues-inspired solos were fun I understand the appeal, it's just not for me Favourites: Cinnamon Girl
I generally really love the guitar and bass playing on Neil's albums. The solo on Down by the River goes on quite a bit too long for me, though. Actually all of the instrumentals are a bit too long for me. I don't mind music with really long solos or instrumentals (I'm a big Kansas fan), but the ones on this album just don't do enough new or interesting things to really keep me engaged.
Like a country version of a fallout radio
A very chill and relaxing album, gives me the vibes of being on a roadtrip
I was literally just looking at this album before I came on the website. Is this thing stalking me? Basically half acoustic, half electric. I prefer the electric side. The bass on this album is amazing. Honestly didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Listened twice. Rating: 6.7-7/10 Favorite Songs: Cowgirl In the Sand Down By the River Round & Round
Cowgirl in the sand and Cinnamon Girl = Classic
Pure classic rock vibes
not for me
Can't in good consciousness give it less than a 3, but I didn't enjoy how long and rambly every song was
Puh…
Okay—not my favorite, not terrible.
That's not my taste in musik. But ok
3.5
could i write poetry to this? n
I'm not usually a big fan of Neil Young. His high, screechy voice get on my nerves. But I do like the Crazy Horse stuff.
I have mixed feelings about Neil Young - some of the songs are so good, some are so bad, and then there's the voice.
Enjoyed it
Enjoyed this
I can't wait for more Neil Young. Favourite track: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.
Neil Young... mid
I liked the singles i knew. The rest, not so much.
7/10
It’d be interesting to know what I’d rate this if I wasn’t learning how to play guitar, liked some of the riffs, but sometimes solos go on too long.
The album wisely starts with its best song, Cinnamon Girl, which is a shrewd choice. After that, it's at its best when Young is playing and not singing.
The best album by Neil Young I've listened.
I just can’t get into country and this was too country for me. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Round And Round (It Won’t Be Long) Rating: 3
First song is good. The singing is not as annoying as on his later records. The rest of the album has its good moments and its mediocre moments. I can understand why people like this record. Favorite song: Cinnamon girl.
Here's another record that has sat in my queue for weeks. I couldn't bring myself to slogging through the dilapidated recording of the homely, earnest, warbling bard Neil Young. I always thought 'horse with no name' was corny and that's as deep as I ever went with his style. Just today I haphazardly pressed play as I went out for a walk and winced for the sting of getting body hair ripped from my skin with wax for an hour. I was ready to endure the torment and then come back here and lament what a tired relic of the 70's this guy was. But then, as I do here a lot, I listened to it, was caught off guard at how much I enjoyed it, then I have to come back and state that yes, IATA. Not that I think Neil's voice is compellingly engaging, but the instrumentation of the acoustic and electric guitar and the prog-rock-meandering song structure led me to some mellow mind meandering of my own. Except for when Neil was singing, this felt more like a back rub than body waxing.
surprisingly this album felt like it had a blues rock vibe to it. I digged it.
Hippie folk rock to shoot a woman down the river to. Pretty good, songs were a bit long. Wasn’t the best thing I’ve but definitely not the worst. 6/10
It shifted between “I kind of like this” and “this is kind of boring.” I actually preferred the slower acoustic tracks (“Round and Round” and “Running Dry”). 3.5.
Not streaming anywhere
Not all that bad, but not all that special either. Some of the tracks were alright but it was certainly an album that pretty much passed me by.
Some beauty, but mostly forgettable

3/5 good but not enough
Too much Neil, tried to not let it cloud my judgement of this album but it would have definitely benefitted with a bit of space from the last one. This was much more of a blues rock album but I don't think the heavier approach was a benefit, a lot of the music seemed a bit straightforward and I don't think Neil has the voice for it. It was fine to listen to on a basic level but can't think of any part that stood out. Id probably give it a two now but I think if I hadn't just listened to the previous album I'd find a bit more in it, I'll say 2.5 again.
Think I enjoyed the first half more than the second; looking forward to Harvest.
The first Neil Young album I didn't actively dislike. Suppose I can mostly attribute that to Crazy Horse. Highlights: Cinnamon Girl Down by the River Cowgirl in the Sand
2 Neil Young albums in a row! Again, echoing a lot of what I said about after the gold rush. Probably didn't enjoy this quite as much, but might just be Neil Young fatigue. Crazy horse maybe made it a little more interesting Still 3.5 though
Three big hits on this
Good
The first two songs were really fun and listenable. They were stuck in my head for a while. Neil Young and Crazy Horse sounded great together. The album took a nose-dive with the slower ballad-y songs. Also this album isn’t on Spotify. I had to steal my boyfriend’s Apple Music. 😤
Slow
latter half was nice enough ill give it a 3
Better than the last NY
Better than last NY
I get that it’s Neil Young, but this one’s so samey I got kinda bored
Not a huge fan but this album was short with some nice songs.
Very watery mix which threw me off. Cinnamon Girl was good, and some of the 8+ minute songs were solid, but I'm not overly excited by it.
Fine, Harvest is more interesting to me
Amazing what cocaine can bring humanity
Was only able to listen to this once today. There were some good parts but nothing truly grabbed me. I do like a lot of other Neil Young music. So maybe this one will grow on me. 3/5
I kind of like The Losing End and Running Dry
Cinnamon Girl Down by the River
Fine
Only 3 tracks on Spotify
I get a sense of bewilderment and sense of place-less-ness from these songs, and not just because of the album title, though that helps, since it's also the name of and theme of one of the songs. A sense of searching but being lost, seeking but not finding (the girl) purpose. Spinning in circles, going nowhere, a bit confused, wandering and lonely. I love how Young explains in the liner notes that sometimes a song with an ostensible story is actually just about sex. Notkoff's squealing violin on "Running Dry" is so damn haunting and beautiful, regret in music form. And "Cowgirl in the Sand" is one of the greatest, most epic album closers of all time. Young isn't the first or the last to sing of "the woman in you", as if woman is possessed by some feminine anima that makes them behave in a way that makes men fear. And that male frustration vents itself in those guitar solos.
nice folk rock
This is better than On The Beach, but Neil Young still sucks.
Pretty good - some good jams
Neil young a bit country
Honky tonk rock for background listening . No clear theme or catchy melodies.
not my favorite album of his, but it's still a pretty good album!
Ein Musiker mit Profil und politischem Engagement. Manchmal finde ich die Musik zu anstrengend.
nicht gehört, Bewertung nur damit keine Anzeige mehr
It’s a little too country sounding for me, but three of the songs were good! Most were just to slow pace and bland.
Summary: This was a fun listen. I feel like I learned a lot about Neil Young and his style. I don't have a lot of context for 1969 and whether this was groundbreaking or important to rock music. I cannot imagine a world where this wasn't at least a unique style with the lead guitar doing a lot of the talking. Track by track notes: 1 - Cinnamon Girl Head is bobbing. Chill but with some clear rock feeling. The claps and some of the harmonies almost give me a Beatles hint but with an obviously harder rock feel. Like this one. 2 - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Little bit of a country rock feel. It's fine. 3 - Round & Round Nice gentle lullaby. 4 - Down by the River The lead guitar gave me stank face (a good thing) in the start. Then it mellowed and got a bit boring but the chorus came in and was powerful. I'm digging this one and would certainly revisit in the right mood. Holy crap I still have >6 minutes to go. It was a good listen but never blew me away. 5 - The Losing End This is a bit too country for me. 6 - Running Dry Poetic and artistic. Not a song I would play a lot but I think I get it. 7 - Cowgirl In The Sand Are we at the last song already? High expectations for the last song of such a short album. The guitar work on this album continues to be stellar. Oh this is a groove...
I love Neil Young, and respect his stance on streaming media, but listening to music on YouTube is just awful!!!!! This is a great album, Neil Young has such a beautiful and simple way of delivering vocals over very intimately written songs. Love the album Hate YouTube (free)
es como un pseudo rock de los 60´, pero muchas canciones eran muy, pero muy fomes.
Instrumentally great - especially guitars. Lyrics didn’t resonate with me. Voice ok.
A pleasant surprise
It’s ok. Sound is a relic of the past.
Enjoyable album overall 7
Not my favourite Neil young but still worth buying a vinyl
Zu Beginn mühsam, ab 4. Song gut. Gute Texte, feine Gitarrensoli
Sounds like something my parents would listen to. Enjoyable, but nothing I’ll come back too. I usually like longer songs, but some of these dragged, hard. His vibrato is wild.
Música simple, entretenida y facilita. Perfecto para mis oídos, y perfecto para que se me olvide en una hora.
I guess I like Neil Young. Cinnamon Girl is a rollercoaster starter but overall enjoyable listen.
5.5/10 Highlights: Cinnamon Girl Cowgirl in the Sand
This was very chill and relaxing, I liked the cowgirl in the sand song.
A good, quick and done Neil Young album. The stripped back ones are better than the full fat tracks.
I keep expecting to like NY, but so far have found his work to be a tad self indulgent.
It was fine for background but it not full my cup of tea The song are a vibe but not my
It was short, and I was busy, so I ended up listening to this album a few times in a row. Apart from cinnamon girl I couldn’t tell you another song. But at least I didn’t hate it.
Son 2ème album. Du solide, Cinnamon girl c'est un classique. Même le 2ème est bonne.
nostalgic ponderous folksy grunge rock with some questionably long instrumental solos
Underwhelming
Unavailable in France
Pretty solid! A little out of my taste range but Neil has a great way of holding a listener captive with his storytelling.
I really wish I could be done with non-spotify albums now because not only is it annoying with ads and having to find the right playlist and everything, but I also won't be able to relisten to tracks I liked because I'll never remember it outside of today. With most of these types of albums they aren't my jam anyway and it's not a problem but I really liked the title track of this album. Fortunately the rest and especially the last two songs kinda suck but even still it just discourages me from revisiting it so much.
A quick seven track album. Young's second. I didn't know any of these songs upon listening to the album, though I know I'm familiar with other Neil Young songs. It was just OK to me. It's one of those singers/musicians where every song seems to be similar to the first, and then similar to the next. Nothing really stands out. But I can't rate it below a three simply based on the rock significance Young has provided.
Not listening to this because its a pain in the arse to find.
couldnt find the whole album
Had to listen on YouTube. Was good
Just boring and not that interesting. Ok background vibes. Very jammy. Don’t love his voice.
Solid. A three.
#46. I can't be bothered to scour the whole internet for wherever the fuck Niel Young keeps all his music these days, so I'm just going to wing it. Cinnamon Girl is good. Down by the River is good. The rest of its probably fine? Fuck it. 3/5: acceptable.
This album was not available on Spotify, but I was able to find it on YouTube. Overall the album was pretty alright for a folk rock album. I liked a couple of songs. Favorite Song(s): "Cinnamon Girl", "Running Dry", "Down By The River"
3. Background music. It's fine to listen to whilst reading for example, but nothing about it excites me.
As I have said before, not super familiar with Neil Young, so getting any of this albums is a bit of a treat. Neil Young with Crazy Horse seems sweet. Meandering and murky. Some jams for sure. Really enjoyed this album.
Cinnamon Girl - 6.2/10 Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - 8.9/10 Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) - 7.5/10 Down by the River - 6/10 The Losing End (When You're On) - 6.4/10 Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets) - 7.7/10 Cowgirl in the Sand - 7.1/10 Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Neil Young & Crazy Horse - 7/10
I do like some of Neil Young's music so I'm hopeful this will be good... This album also along with the last are not on Spotify anymore so had to listen on YT. I do enjoy music like this, quite chill and like smth that my grandad would maybe listen to lol. Sometimes I was like ooooft that guitar playing!!
This is a good Neil Young album and important as it’s his first with his backing band crazy horse. The album showcases Young’s distinctive guitar style, blending folk, rock, and country influences. The songs are catchy and anthemic, but also have a raw and spontaneous edge, reflecting Young’s personal and artistic struggles at the time. The album contains some of his most iconic tracks, such as Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and Cowgirl in the Sand. Enjoyable listen but he has better albums and this wouldn’t be his masterpiece by any means. 3 stars out of 5.
Its fine. You can play this album in a midwestern bar and no one will hate you.
Nice and chilled album. Great guitar tones. Would listen again
3.5/5 - Solid Album, Can see myself listening to more Neil Young based on this.
Not a Neil Young fan but this is a good album, lots of energy. I found the strings on Running Dry pretty grating. Cowgirl in the sand was probably the highlight of the album. Pretty sure the solo in cinnamon girl is just one note played different ways which is pretty impressive. Solid 3.
Jó volt rá borongós, esős időben kötni. De sok másra jobb lett volna
Hard to listen to since not on Spotify. Really like round & round, and down by the river. Cool experimental songwriter/stroyteller feeling
What a storyteller. Great guitar work. The production could be better. Neil Young voice is sometimes blurry. 3 stars
Not bad, the standout to me is Cinnamon Girl.
cinnamon girl 😍😍😍
Pretty good. Some of Young's classic solo tunes are on this album. Not the biggest fan of him, but I do enjoy his music at times. Really like the guitar work throughout. 3.5/5 May listen again
Iha jees! Parempi, ku odotin.
Favorite song: Cinnamon Girl Least favorite: Running Dry One word: rustic
Couldn't find it
idk, i like neil young, i feel i should like this one more than i actually do. very distinct sounding for 1969, but the vocals are shaky and production ramshackle even for neil young.
3/5. I always think of my dad when I hear Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Their live album rattling through our house.
Some real highs. Not lows as such, but definitely some points need you to be in the mood for them. Turns almost prog-folk at times with long instrumentals. 3*
some good some ppor
Tough to find anything notable here. Cinnamon girl is an OK single, the long tracks are good but leave a bit of meat on the bone. I own this record and it's a fine piece
Cowgirl and Down by The River are the real MVPs. The rest is fine.
I usually don’t like Young’s voice too much but this was easy to listen to and just relax, except for Running Dry. The violin makes me want to rip out my eardrums.
This was a decent 70's light rock thing
Folky with some electric guitar. Nice in the background
Not bad, but not a regular listen for me
Ok
Jammy, sleepy, lazy-day-in-the-sun music.
None
тяжело с отсутствующим на спотифае( вроде хороший (узнала про очередной кавер в творчестве турин брейкс)
3.75
It was fine
I'm 50/50 on Neil Young, but there are a few classics on this album.
Can't listen to It on Spotify
some beautiful guitar play
Better than I thought it'd be.
Some songs a bit too long but quite nice.
Down By the River and Cowgirl In the Sand were enjoyable.
The album is a bit too middle-of-the-road for my taste, musically not very interesting. His voice isn't great either. However, I like how the songs flow together well and the overall production is good, too.
Some good tracks, some not so good. Overall would listen again. Brown Girl In The Sand and Cinnamon Girl stand out.
I know and like Neil Young, a lot, but I didn't know Crazy Horse was the name of his backing band. I thought it was maybe another singer or guitar player. Anyway, good album, I like the song Down By The River a lot. There's a live version somewhere that's even better than the album version. A three-star album, in my opinion.
Don't like country that much but this album has some nice laid back rock songs. Highlights: Down by the River, Running Dry, Cowgirl in the Sand
Neil Young and Crazy Horse. The first track is absolute fire, the rest of the album is standard Neil Young.
Unfortunately, Neil Young’s music is not on Spotify so I had to annoyingly look this one up on Youtube. The album is a collection of tracks that explore themes of love, loneliness, and the struggles of life. All carried out with its gritty guitar riffs and Young's signature wailing vocals. "Down by the River." has to be the best song of the album. Clocking in at over nine minutes, this song is quite special, showcasing Young's ability to create captivating musical journeys. The extended guitar solos are mesmerizing as well. "Cowgirl in the Sand." is another good song. This track features Young's remarkable guitar skills once again, combined with his emotionally charged vocals. The song's hypnotic rhythm and poetic lyrics create a sense of longing and introspection. Young's collaboration with his band, Crazy Horse, is a defining element of the album. The synergy between Young and the band members is palpable, resulting in a cohesive and powerful sound throughout the record. Their raw, unpolished approach adds a well-needed sense of authenticity to the music, making it feel alive and untamed. The sound is however not perfect and couldve been mastered further to fully potentialize the record. Something that Neil Young has going for him on this album is how well he is able to switch from rock’roll songs to more acoustic tracks quite seamlessly, showing the talents of a great artist. Close to a 4 this one.
Couldn't find a service to listen to it
Pretty nice. Didn't realise Neil Young was from quite so long ago.
S'alright.
It's certainly music of its time. I don't see myself listening to it in the future, but I can definitely see why a ton of people would like this album.
This album was really good background music but for some reason I struggled with getting through it. I kept pausing it to watch something in between the songs.
Good not my taste.
It's ok
It was alright
Neil should break out the electric more often, as this one LP has more energy than all his others on the list combined. The upwards shift in tempo and instrumentation means the songwriting hits harder, and even if the songs run a bit long they have much more melodic variation to sustain them now. A good shift in pace for the singer-songwriter that leads to a nice rock slow burn overall.
I think I found an abridged version, which was far better than the previous Neil Young i reviewed... though maybe due to its brevity.
I like the three rock tracks, although the long songs are over-jammed. Surprised this is 1969 and so early in Neil's oevre.
Not my favorite Neil Young album, but not the worst. Fairly enjoyable listen all around. 3/5.
Cinnamon Girl is a classic tune. Most of the country/folk songs I could do without though
No esta en Spotify
Another album I found hard to rate, surprise. I listened to it once and got distracted with something else, so it kind of just flew over my head. Then I listened again, and it definitely stuck to me better. Maybe if I listened more I would grow more fond of it, but it still didn't quite stick. I can't put my finger on it though, it wasn't bad by any means, but there weren't any song that particularly grabbed me I think. I contemplated going for a weak 4, but I think it will have to be a strong 3 instead. Definitely have some Neil Young songs I'm very fond of, and none of them were on this album, so I know what it feels like when it hits home.
This was a pleasant listen. I have a feeling I can grow to like this a lot but without any big hooks it's a strong 3 from me for now.
Solid, but not the best Neil Young album. 3.5/5
Neil Young är bra, synd han inte finns på Spotify
Neil Young clearly has talent, but there wasn't too much stand out on the album. It was good, and pleasurable to listen to, but nothing jumped out at me in any particular way.
Another album that kicks off with a lot of promise. But Cinnamon Girl doesn't stay the course. I enjoyed this more than the Cooper album but only just. Fave tracks would be Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand
Helt okej. En stark trea.
This is regular Neil Young fare, and regular Neil Young fare tends to be good fare. It's not as striking as certain albums, but it certainly was a pleasant listen, generally balanced pace and good songs.
I think I'm getting Stockholm syndrome at this point. Cinnamon Girl was really good?? Neil Young's voice didn't make me want to pull a double Van Gogh???? If I ever give a Neil Young album a 4 please admit me to a psych ward.
The only Neil Young album I would choose to listen to if held at wand-point by a power-drunk Bellatrix LeStrange. CINNAMON GIRL.
very hippy-like it's ok
Neil Young is pretty damn great. I knew a couple of these songs but don't think I've heard the whole album more than a couple of times. Stand Outs: Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River Others: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Round & Round (It Won't Be Long), Running Dry (Requiem For the Rockets), Cowgirl in the Sand 3.5/5
This was much better than the other Neil Young album I’ve had (Tonight’s The Night), the last two songs especially. Still don’t love it though.
This isn’t on Spotify and there’s also no full video of the album on Youtube so I had to listen to it on a playlist. The ads were sooooo annoying. Anyway, it was fine, I see it’s musical value but it’s not something I’d listen to again
3.5
An album I hadn't heard before. Neil's vocals are sublime, and Crazy Horse all do their job well. While this isn't my preferred style of music, I can appreciate why it has been considered for this list. It's an interesting mix of easy 3 minute songs such as "Cinnamon Girl" and the drawn out progressive styled stories like "Down on the River". Neil's distinctive vocals are the best element here. An interesting album, perhaps to my ears not interesting enough to bring me back often.
A great album but not really my style. I like Neil Young but I prefer a little more rock in my rock. Less twang
Så mycket Neil Young det blir, en lite vemodig stämning över albumet. Rätt skönt.
piolaaaaa
This was a pretty pleasant, but average listening experience. "Cinnamon Girl" and "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" make for great openers, but the rest of the album doesn't hold up to the same standard ("Down by the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" BOTH could have been better if it were cut by a few minutes). Other than some nitpicks, I had no complaints about the album, really, but I wouldn't say that it really hit me or reached me in any meaningful way; it just made for very normal, middle-of-the-road listening. I will say, Neil's voice can sometimes get a bit hard to listen to, but it's in a pretty listenable form on this album, at least for me. Also notable is that Neil really sets a tone on this album for the next decade of folk and soft rock; this sounds akin to CSNY's work on Deja Vu, plus countless other soft and folk rockers of the 1970s. Neil Young definitely trailblazes with this sound. I want to give this more than a 3, but it's also not quite a 4. Probably a 3.5 if I could, but I'm going to round down.
Its ok.
Neil sätt ditt schtuff på spotify🙄
Solidi albumi Youngilta. Hitaita pitkiä biisejä mistä tykkään. Down by the river I SHOT MY BABYYY.. hurja..
Mon phare dans ce brouillard d'artistes inconnus
on commence à connaître
I thought it was okay, it was a real mix of neat psychedelic classic rock tracks, and some country drivel I couldn't care less about. Very hit and miss album, and nothing was particularly memorable to me. Additionally this album isn't available on Spotify in the UK so it messes up my favourites playlist, and that pisses me off. Favourite: Down by the River
Favourite song: Down by the River Album art: 2/5
I enjoyed this album, having never heard it before. Neil Young is an artist that I already quite like but he's released better albums for sure. A couple of really good tracks but nothing GREAT in my opinion. Still worth a listen.
I was fully prepared to give this album 5 stars after the first two tracks. Cinnamon Girl is a banger of an opening track, however the remaining tracks fail to reach those heights for me. Throw in not one, but two 9+ minute tracks and this short 7 song album still manages to drag under its own weight.
It was okay.. not worth remembering I guess
2/7, 29%
Toimii. Jammailumenoo mut hyvällä tavalla, koska nämä ovat viimeisteltyjä biisejä.
Cinnamon Girl ja historian kuunneltavimmat jamit (koska rakennettu biisien ympärille).
Sorry can’t listen since it’s not on spotify
Como siempre hay que salir de Spotify para oír a Neil Young & Co. La canción que da título al disco ya da para 3 estrellas: "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere". "Down by the river" y "Cowgirl in the sand" a pesar de ser bastante largas también se disfrutan.
Wasn't able to listen to full album.
I’ve always liked Neil Young but never loved him. This didn’t change that But Running Dry was new to me and I did really like that
Ok.
Good album, found on YouTube. Thanks, Rogan.
Music for depressed middle age men. not bad but all the songs drag a bit too long which works when they work but if they’re even a little off then it sucks. best tracks: everybody knows this is nowhere, cowgirl in the sand
I’m so tired of Neil Young at this point
Some cool guitarists and some entertaining songs, particularly Cinnamon Girl, but overall it just kinda existed and did nothing special for me.
Like the music, but Young's voice is kind of annoying.
Quite nice background music. All sounds a bit similar.
Always liked Neil Young's voice. Would listen to Down by the River and Running Dry again
not a huge fan on the whole more on the country side for Neil young down by the river is cool though
The semi-country / folk rock sound with some of the twanginess is pretty cool. Not often that I'd come back to this, but I'm glad I listened to this.
Neil Young's first successful foray after Buffalo Springfield. The man proved that he could ROCK, while still staying in his folk rock pocket. Also worth noting that this is the first Crazy Horse album, a band that would regularly play backup for Neil Young throughout his career. The songs are great, but the longer songs have a distinctive "jam" quality about them. Crazy Horse backs up Young for X amount of measures and he just sort of noodles around in what could be described as a guitar solo. Down by the River especially lacks purpose during these parts, making it harder for me to enjoy. Cowgirl in the Sand is slightly better. I think a lot of the appeal of Neil Young for me is in his live stuff. Rust Never Sleeps was a bonafide classic for it's energy and excellent level of quality throughout. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere doesn't come close for me.
Sort of a difficult album to rate. I really liked 3 of the songs and really didn't like the rest. I'm not even sure why I liked those three as they seemed pretty objectively mediocre, but I found myself going back to them over and over. 3.5 stars.
Rock. Blues.
I enjoyed the first 2 tracks, nice guitars. Third track was a bit boring. 'Down by the River' was my favourite track of the album, the fact that most of it was instrumental definitely helped. 3,5/5
More than with any other Neil Young album (it's a matter of the falsetto), the adjective that comes to mind whenever I hear this is plaintive.
Love their music
Pretty good album, I think we had another Neil one on here. Nothing stuck out, just a nice rock album.
very chill classic rock. made me think of an american countryside movie soundtrack instantly. calm and peaceful. "round & round" sounds like dying from old age and "running dry" feels like the suicide of a wasted one (i like this one so much). very cool guitar solos. i've actually enjoyed the instrumental way more than the vocals. definitely it gets better with every song, didn't make a jaw-dropping impression with the first tracks. overall it's a piece of solid classic rock music but nothing special for me, wouldn't be my first choice in this genre, i'd need to be in a very specific mood to be listening to this whole album again. favourite track: "running dry" (the instrumental is so fucking good it made me think of 4 am summer morning out the window smoking). least favourite track is probably "cinnamon girl" (thought lana del rey covered that one honestly).
Would probably listen again which I guess makes it a 4?
Cinnamon Girl is prob the best track for me, it's all good but I wish I could get more into it. Definitely a nice album start to finish though.
Ok
Vintage Neil.
I already knew Cinnamon Girl, but the rest of the record is new to me. Down by the River is a good song initially. It's not my favourite album, but it's good. Would relisten I think. Bit of a fight between Cinnamon Girl and Cowgirl in the Sand as favourites. Initial thoughts are a 3.5/5?
Ok, not bad, wasn't really in the mood for it
The songs i like on here i really like and the others i hate. This couldve been a 4 or 5 star cause i love neil young. Why does his version of down by the river have to be 80000 minutes long?
Nice songs, nice solos, would've liked it more like 8 years ago 3/5
Definitely like it better than his later work. Nice album.
meh 3 stars, dragging and meandering at times. Neil's voice also just doesn't do it for me. will rate 3 stars from now on if I would choose to listen to this album again in future, 2 if would not choose to listen to this album except circumstances (recognizing that an album is representative of a genre etc) 1 star is will never listen again.
Ok
Very good. Neil Young I don’t remember hearing before, makes me want to explore more.
Palmas palmas. Madera y distorsión. Camisas tartán escurriendose al sol Armonías (des)cansadas. No te escondas entre los lados del río.
Too bad Neil removed his dscography from Spotify...
I get why other people like Neil Young. And if I started writing music, it'd probably sound a lot like Neil Young. And it's not bad! But it's catch-and-release fishing. Hooks are good, but the songs meander, solos don't have direction, and they lose me 3 minutes into a ten minute(!) song.
Not bad but Neil still isn't working for me. I feel like his style is something I would like but his songs leave so much to be desired.
A lot more folk than Rust Never Sleeps, didn’t catch my attention but was pretty unmemorable.
A bit underwhelming/uninteresting, but still enjoyable. Never need to hear it again though
It must be quite hard to be a devoted Neil Young fan without opening a sizeable quantity of paracetamol. I feel like I'm honouring the memory of my parents by listening to it all the way through whilst pondering how good their drugs must have been. Whiny.
A very “ok” album
It’s easy to see why this album it's on the list. But I think he got better ones (6/10) FT: Down by the River
cinnamon girl clears tbh Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) IS VERY LONG AND SHOULDNT BE nah the chorus kinda brings it back actually down by the river is a bop but why is it so long it was short but also a lot longer than it should've been. lyrics were forgettable at best but instrumentals fuckin bop. solid 7/10
This was a really enjoyable album. Compared to other Neil your albums I felt like this one was more concise and flowed well together. With only 7 songs I enjoyed more than half. The folky rock sound is where I feel Young does his best work. 7.6/10
I think this is the second Neil Young album that I've gotten so far. I'm not a huge fan of the sound of his voice, however he does make some enjoyable music. He's the quintessential folk rock artist.
Not a huge Neil Young fan. This is ok. Easy listening but doesn’t do much for me. Cinnamon Girl is a good start but it fades pretty quick
Alright album, still haven’t been drawn in by Young’s music
Rating: 6/10
More hit than miss
Fantastic guitar playing, really liked it on "Down by the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand". However, didn't really enjoy the singing/songwriting as much.
Får bare spilt ein sang, men den var jo bra :P
A nice, chill album. I was not familiar with any of the songs on this album but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. That is the one problem with the random album a day. I don't really take the time to listen to the album thoroughly. Maybe I will have to start reading about the albums, at least those I am not familiar with, and see if there is a theme like that previous album or at the minimum just to have some background information.
Country-rock suave de Neil Young. Ni fu ni fa.
Not bad
Only one song available on Spotify, but it was much more to my liking than the last Young album.
Meh
An average album. It started out fine. I like the instrumentation in Down by the River, but the rest of the album did not interest me very much. I wouldn’t listen again. Favorite song: Cinnamon Girl Least favorite song: Round & Round (It Won’t Be Long)
Doesn't include my favorite Neil Young songs but it was good.
its cool
Ja, geht so. Hat aber mit "Down by the River" und "Cowgirl in the Sand" zwei Killer-Lieder. Daher 3.
Kan vara värt att återvända till
One of the better Neil Young albums on the list, Cinnamon Girl is very good, Down by the River strong, it's a tight listen with a groove. Shame there's just way too much of his work overall. 3/5.
Não ouvi pois ele tirou do Spotify kkk
Ehh this was nice and all but pretty dull and dragged at times.
This was fine
En jaksanut kaivaa netistä koko levyä joten yhden biisin perusteella kolme tähteä
Perushyvää Neililtä
Du bon folk rock de Neil Young comme on le connait. Rien de top mais rien de mauvais non plus
Favorites: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere Down By the River
I like Neil Young so it's not hard to get into his albums. Not every song is a winner but there's so much in here there's bound to be the odd glitch. A bit of country, a lot of rock, some great guitar solos plus Neil's voice hits the spot.
Sigh. Can't get it on Spotify. Which fair enough, I guess, I appreciate his taking a stand. Hopefully YouTube is giving me approximately the right thing. I know the standard Neil Young stuff, but I've never considered myself a particularly big fan. I do like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young so there's that. Starting with the name and album art I'm slightly put off, but only slightly. It doesn't look like it rocks, if you know what I mean. And what's up with that pose? Starts out very strong with Cinnamon Girl, an undeniable hit. The title track is fine but Round & Round is yuck. I am used to thinking of his voice as wise/angry old man voice; it is interesting that he sounded exactly the same 50 years ago. Anyway, Down by the River is a great song. This much madness is too much sorrow. The Losing End is chill, I kind of liked it, Running Dry no thank you (unless I happen to be watching Firefly at the same time), Cowgirl in the Sand feels really old fashioned but I guess is fine. Overall a 2 start meh but Cinnamon Girl is definitely worth a star. This helped me find the 1001 Album Club podcast (https://open.spotify.com/episode/7AGyTZ3FeLBXs72wJQP6xM?si=ybGYS6UySVuxTmsYw2QYxg) plus some great covers of Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand.
Sorry Neil, I tried. I like Neil a lot more than I like Neil's music. There are some absolutely priceless songs in here but then there's... the rest of the album. Just not my thing.
It’s okay.
