Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Not exactly how I remember the Bible from Sunday school. But I kind of dug it.

Another day I might like this more or less - as it was I liked it okay.

Weird for my taste, but not bad

Overall this was a middle of the road 90's alt rock album for me. There isn't anything that sticks out about them but there were a few songs that were pretty catchy... PCP and track 2 stood out to me. Pretty average, not bad, not great.

my review from Everything Must Go still stands. it sounds pretty good, until i get reminded of coldplay. 3.5

The sound of British 90’s angry youth. It stands up reasonably well, although not any of their major hits on this album. Most interesting as the last musical document of Richey before he fell off the earth somewhere.

Solid rock album. Reminds me of a mix of the smashing pumpkins and queens of the Stone Age. It is a little too long for my liking though.

Bible looked different in the 90s, I guess. I actually do know/like one Manic Street Preachers song ('Your love alone is not enough'), but alas, it is not on this album. This one feels kinda similar to Green Day's album "Warning". Slur count = 1. I have just one issue with 'Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart', and that is the apostrophe. Lowlight: 'The Intense Humming of Evil' (more like the intense high-pitched squeaking of evil)

I haven't listened to Manic Street Preachers very much, but I enjoyed this album. Their sound reminds me of Against Me--or the other way around, I suppose. Anyway, that's a compliment.

It was an ok punk album. I laughed out loud when they said f the Brady bill, Sam colt made us all equal

Everything Must Go is an incredible album. I thought I was in for more of the same - but I was not. This is fine, some nice parts, a lot more rocky than I expected, but super middle-of-the-road. I did have a listen to a few tracks for the lyrics, on purpose, as I believe this is where the album shines the most, and I would tend to agree, but it isn't dressed up quite enough for my liking. More bells and whistles, please.

6/5/26. Cool discovery! Will need to listen more to grasp all the themes and lyrics, but a hidden gem in a crowded 90s alt rock scene. Loved the unique chord progressions and use of odd time signatures on a couple songs.

The whole politically edgy with dialogue samples thing was appealing to start. However, the more I went along with it, the more I got fatigued by the sheer force of it. The lead vocalist belts and screams and that can be a lot to take 56 minutes of. Eventually, time is wasted with more scattered controversy spent on weak hooks and melodies. The story of Richey Edwards adds some weight, especially the song about anorexia which hits hard. Jesus Christ, I just realized how wrong that last sentence is. Ignore it, I'm keeping it because I don't have much else to write. It's an album that goes hard at the big stuff and fails to galvanize me beyond a few choice cuts. For more info, see this: https://youtu.be/4IxsDoU7hMY?si=Dd9d5gDFxM_Fu7rq&t=270 (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)

I should like this but I don’t really

Pretty solid album, but it feels like it blends together at times, and gets a bit generic Favorite track(s) She Is Suffering

An important album for the Manics, in that it was the last one with Richey. Doesn't stop it being a bit of a rough listen since lyrically it's shot through with reference to depression and the worst of humanity in general. Some pretty raw and great songs about rough subjects. It's hard not to view it as something of a suicide note set to music, but it's still good.

A little Muse, a little Radiohead, a little early-Foo-Fighters; very ‘90s, interesting lyrics.

Better than Coldplay

Painfully sad. Sadly beautiful.

3.25-ish. It's pretty nice and feels like early 2000-s.

Meh. 3.0

Pretty cool listen.

Enjoyed!

Disappointing MOR 90s rock from the manics.

The story about them is cool, but the music is meh

Mediocre hard-britrock. I found it forgettable. I'm probably out of target.

Early 90s alt rock. Nothing to really dislike or get excited about.

I liked the start of it and i understand how people would love this music but it wasn't for me

A religious experience

There's something about MSP songs. Feels like they have all the right ingredients. But they seem too artificially crafted so that the (always impressive) lyrics can be crammed into the song structure. Or maybe not. But either way they don't make the connection they should. 3*

Better than expected.

Good album, but an absolute bummer (understandably so). Favourite track: Faster

Still fees quite fresh and ahead of its time. Quite enjoyable album.

Maso maso, aunque me llevo un like! (...evil...) Nota: 3.2

Not bad

“Even a cursory glance at the titles will confirm that this is not the new Gloria Estefan album”. Q Magazine's solid description of the Manics’ third album is spot on. The tracklisting is made up of songs with titles like “Of Walking Abortion”, “Archives of Pain” or the mouthful and a half “Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart”. Not exactly drive-time radio-friendly stuff. The dark, twisted side of the lyrical themes of “The Holy Bible” (as well as the visual aesthetic) is down to Richey Edwards. And it'd be his last contribution before disappearing into thin air, becoming yet another tragic myth of the rock world. This is a far rawer Manic Street Preachers than the version that followed. Richey's lyrics dive into anorexia, serial killers, fascism and suicide, pushing the band into a tense, post-punk sound that’s far more interesting than their later work. Bradfield’s voice still grates, and the songs can feel a bit frantic and structurally loose. I’m not a big fan of the Manics, but this is one of their better albums. Far better than their later drive-time radio-friendly stuff.

Fine album. Really just fine. 3/5

This goes. 3/5

I listened to this several times and can't decide if I like it or hate it. If I had to guess, these guys would be a real drag at a cocktail party. I appreciate the range of their music which seems kind of emo to me, like a British version of Sunny Day Real Estate that takes themselves very seriously. I would like to listen another time or two but I need to move on with this list.

Good album, consistent sound and good energy. Always heard of the band but never listened to them. Enjoyable and when the album finished, shuffled on to Fugazi. Nice!

Better than anticipated. For some reason, it reminded me of Eagles Of Death Metal for large parts of the album. It might have been a 4 star album, but it started to sound like Green Day, so I'm knocking off a star. 3 stars.

6/10… 90s indie / britpop / *1994

Ambivalent. Want to like these guys for their musicianship and their right-on politics but good lord they can be biblically dour.

MSP are fine and this is a decent album, but I can't say I love it or feel I needed to listen to it. Having two of their albums says they're as big it as influential as bands like Pearl Jan, which makes no sense. This is the album to drop

I think this is my second MSP record from the list, and this one left a slightly larger impression than the last. Notably, I feel like I can hear the roots of other bands here. Vocally, Foo Fighters is one example that popped up in my head a few time. I'm still not sure I care, but maybe!

Having heard both Manic Street Preacher albums in this book, I have come to terms with the idea their music just does not move me. There are good songs on here and this is much "heavier" (in all ways the term is used) than Everything Must Go. I think the story around the band and their guitarist's disappearance is more interesting than the music...at least to me. I enjoyed the Holy Bible more on second listen to it. Perhaps if I keep listening then I will eventually make it an album in my collection. My favorite tracks: Yes Of Walking Abortion She is Suffering Revol Faster This is Yesterday

Intresting music and critical which i like.

Better than I expected

I Find It Quite Strange that a random generator gives me ''A Christmas Gift For You On Christmas and ''The Holy Bible'' On Easter but neither of them are bad albums.

Not bad, but certainly not memorable.

It's ok, I legit forgot I listened to it lol

Hard to listen to these guys without getting distracted and going on an hours long deep dive into the disappearance of Richey Edwards

Começa bem, mas rapidamente me vi perdendo interesse.

Thankfully this sounded better than The Intense Humming of Evil. Wish it was a bit Faster.

Really good alternative sound. I would definitely listen to another album by them. Not quite 4 stars but 3.5 easy.

Sumt fannst mér mjög fínt annað fannst mér mjög slæmt

I’ve got friends who were obsessed with the Manics, but I’ve never quite got it. A couple of killer singles aside, I find them a bit clunky. This hasn’t really converted me.

Didn't finish it but I thought what I heard was decent enough

Hit or miss

More interested in the story behind the band than the music

On the more boring end of post-punk/alternative rock. Wanted to like this more though there were definitely some pretty solid riffs here

There’s some really enjoyable guitar riffs on display, and at times this much heavier than I expected. The Intense Humming of Evil even takes on a more industrial style. However, I’m just not a great fan of his vocals - they’re not a dealbreaker but they just seem indelibly linked to my perception of the band at their peak, frequenting the charts, which seemingly they leaned further into indie / pop when this album signals something far more interesting.

I like this album in the fact that I like this kind of rock. But I don't know if there's anything on this that I find exemplary. More of a fine example of the 12/10¢ modern rock infused classic rock sound of the time. 7.1 ★★★½

This sounds like a lot of other bands. There's nothing awful here, but it's also just not all that good. The situation with Richey Edwards is sad and casts a pall over this.

I like Manic Street Preachers but not a huge fan. Might like it more if I gave it another go. Bit edgier than their later ones that I'm more familiar with in a good way

I went into this not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. I'd listen to this again.

I liked a lot of what's on here, definitely more than their subsequent album Everything Must Go. Sometimes some tight and polished rock music is what I'm in the mood for and this kind of fits that bill. 3.25/5

Never listened. Expectations: High - Verdict: Very Good - Yep, I was hoping to like it and I do. Took a few tracks to get going though. She Is Suffering and Mausoleum are highlights.

It is solid. Want to like it more than I do, despite many listens over the years.

Decent rock album, with a punk influence. The recording, at least on my gear, doesn't really sound the greatest, but the themes and songwriting are pretty good.

Mostly harmless.

Although I much prefer the band's following two albums, this is rightfully considered a classic. Their last album before founding guitarist-lyrics Richey James vanished without a trace, who knows what happened to him. A very dark and depressing album, but not in an immediately appearent way. Key tracks: Yes IfWhiteAmericaToldTheTruthForOneDayItsWorldWouldFallApart She Is Suffering Revol

I was hovering between 2 and 3 for a rating but the last song settled it higher. It's an ok album with PCP being the standout track. Sad story about the singer, he looks sad-confused in all his pics.

pretty good....not bad...can't complain....but actually everything is just about the same.

This is a 90s band I'd heard of so thought it might be good. Unfortunately it just has a general 90s sound, nothing exciting at all. Will not rate it too low though as it would perhaps improve with a second listen.

I was happy at first to hear something that felt pretty different than a lot of the music on this list. These guys have a pretty unique sound, it reminds me a lot of the skate music from the early 2000's, the So-Cal sound with bands like Rise Against and AFI. I was surprised to learn that these guys were actually from Whales. By midway through the album though I got a little tired of the sound, the singers voice is pretty sharp and the intrigue of a new type of sound on this list wore off. By the end I felt like I wasn't actually sure if this entirely warranted a spot on this list...

nothing bad about its just not very good. It got a bit boring towards the end.

Decent rock and roll album. Felt like a big hair band but not quite. Had a pretty good sign with this one.

Nice, forgettable, rock album.

Not bad rock.

Liked this more than I was expecting, didn't really sound like the couple of other songs that I'd heard from them on compilations and stuff. Really liked "She is Suffering".

Nice but nothing to write home about. Not wanting to add any songs to playlist. Story of guitarist is very interesting. I hope he's out there somewhere living a good life. This is very white noise to me. Something about these types of albums just play in the background to me I don't really hear them. It's just there. Nothingburger. They're just yelling. I honestly don't gaf. Favourite: idk Least favourite: idk

A bit long

very substantive i like it

Not my favourite Manics album. Very much of the same.

Interesting and listenable but not my favourite style of music

Knew them in name only. Seems a younger me would have been totally into this sound. Oops.

This one will require a few more listens for me. The angst and punk sensibilities appealed to me, but the song structures seemed chaotic at times. The lyrics and topics were great, but would have jelled better with an angrier tone. Will definitely need more listening and exploration of their discography.

Like a few of the Manics' songs, never really that into them, enjoyed th album not sure I would revisit

Pretty meh album to properly listen to, but it's alright leaving in the background. That's the typical music that was kind of popular at around that time, so it probably did pretty alright.

Decent album!

Punk goes Alternative. This is too edgy for me. They could use a real lead guitarist, too.

She Is Suffering Faster

It's decent enough. I've always been a passive fan of the manics and revisiting this album hasn't changed that. For me, they are one of those bands that have a solid greatest hits set, and that's as far as it goes for me.

A little dated but some good songs. Definitely against the BritPop grain

Fave was Faster

you could totally deep dive into this album but for now I was only paying half attention so this might not be accurate

Not awful. But nothing outstanding either. Could have been a part of any 90s playlist.

3.3 1x

Unexpected alternative rock album for me, deep lyrics about various issues, heavy rock in some songs and overall, a pleasant surprise.

a few good songs but not their best

I enjoyed the punkier elements. Not terrible, but not all that notable either?

When they first appeared, I took a fairly immediate disliking to the Manics as I found their posturing and sloganeering all a bit forced and cliched. They piqued my interest though when I saw them live at a free festival in '93, then they released this album and I sort of clicked with them. At the time, I enjoyed the edgy urgency of this record, and the tunes really struck me and kept me coming back to it. I hadn't listened for years and looked forward to giving it a go again but it just doesn't have the spark I remembered. I accept that after all this time, it's most likely me that's lost the spark, but I found it a bit of a slog - something about the production of it maybe, that just feels heavy, in a dour kind of way, and a bit... exhausting. I'm not a Manics fan, but I like that they exist, and they seem like good people, but think I'll just stick with the Best Of...

Manic Street Preachers really frustrate me. I have always loved their attitude, their lyrics are often spot on, but I tend to find the majority of their songs.... disappointing. I don't recall listening to this album before. Listening now it seems to epitomise all of the above which is bloody annoying.

It was okay

When to listen: feeling edgy and punky and cooler than I am. I genuinely enjoyed this album—would listen again!

48/1089 3.2399* Wow, what a nice surprise from the opening note. The singer was obviously heavily influenced by Fred mercury, you can really hear some Fred throughout but it almost seems as the album plays on it gets more noticeable. There was no song that got me pumped but it was nice 90s rock with guitar, singer, drums and bass.

Didn't really enjoy this - don't mind the Manics too much on a good day but I don't feel like this is one of their better albums.

I bet if I had ever listened to this around when it came out I'd have a nostalgic feeling about it, but I didn't, and I don't. This is extremely bog standard 90s alt-rock stuff. Some of the riffs are good, some of the lyrics pop, but you could jam any one of these songs between Candelbox, Dishwalla, and Spacehog right after the umpteenth playing of "Basket Case" on alt-rock radio and it would go totally unnoticed. This begs for a 2.5 rating. Rounding up because I'm nice, and it sounds really tragic what happened to that one guy, which I just learned about today.

Pretty good album. Learning about the lead guitarist's mental health struggles really put some of the songs into context. Overall I enjoyed it and would listen to it again, but it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

In many of the songs, it seems like they're trying to say something deep, political or societal. Reading on the background of this album, it seems that the bandmembers were all undergoing a lot of internal turmoil. I can sense that in the music and singing, for sure. It's not an unenjoyable album. They are all talented musicians and artists. Sort of a post-punk, brit-pop, pseudo glam rock vibe.

I’ve always heard of this band but I never knew what they sounded like until today. The first few songs really caught my attention, but that began to fade as the album went on.

Great alt album

These must have been great live back then. Doesn't quite translate to record but I like the energy

Interesting lyrics. Too bad they’re set to music blander than boiled potatoes

I had some preconceived notion of this band by only hearing the name and then following up by listening to them. Whatever my preconceived notion had been was wrong. I liked it more than I thought I would but there weren't really any standout tracks. It also wasn't really head-and-shoulders above any other music coming out in that genre at that time so I'm not sure I would put it on the list. Okay album nonetheless.

Uh, not bad, some parts I liked, some parts weren’t my jam.

interesting. great

Hey! Finally an album that's unique and cool enough to be on this list. Only took listening to 100, so likely 1% of this list is actually worth listening too. Enjoyed the difference.

Dishwater indy.

Punk lyrics but make it sound more like pop music.

Wait this album doesn't sing the praise of the lord?!? They hate Reagan and Thatcher and I like that. Pretty standard good rock. Not much to dislike or like about it though.

Progressive punk-rock was not something I thought existed, but it does and is quite fun. It was for me again the more experimental tracks that really pulled me in especially the intense humming of Evil. 7/10

Three stars, pretty solid,

Ik had vooraf de zeurderige Britpoep verwacht, die we kennen van "if you tolerate this, then your children will be next".

The British have never done anything worthwhile with music

Some parts are OK, but others feel too long. Wouldn't listen to more by them. 2,6/5.

Decent 3.5/5

Glad to be introduced to this, and had never heard the sad story adjacent to it. Good pace, and the beats songs on here are pretty great. There’s some stuff on hear that wore me down and can’t say the vocals are my favorite.

I don't like them but this is good

Incredibly dark and sad -- what a tragic story about the lyricist. But I'm glad I know the album, which I certainly didn't until now.

I like my manics more when they remember the tunes

As said on the other Manic's album. I liked the first album when they were young & a bit dumb & fun. This is just a bit too portentious and joyless for me. I enjoyed it a bit more than Everything Must Go - but it doesn't really get me going.

Pretty solid

At times I like their style, which is unique. But I can’t quite learn to enjoy their lyrics

An interesting listen. I enjoy how the Manics have blended a series of rock genres into something which is theirs alone. There are some stray artifacts from music of the time that’s not so much to my tastes but fall in the same ballpark as their Welsh countrymen Stereophonics. Talking of the Welsh, it’s nice to hear fragments of the native tongue on Revol, I only wish there was more of this. The best bits are when it gets really wiry and angry. The worst bits are when its so-so lyrics are put under the spotlight.

I liked it at first, but the vocalist’s screaming eventually got tiresome

Pretty good. I need to listen to it earnestly again.

It was okay in parts but not the greatest thing ive ever heard

This sounded like standard 90s rock. Not tracks stood out and at the same time nothing was outwardly bad.

No me convence la voz del cantante. No es mal disco pero se indigesta.

Seems like a good version of itself, not my cup of tea but good music.

*Strong lyrics and an intense listen *Good punk/alternative sounds at times but pretty abrasive *Would need several listens to get into

There was definitely some cool creative stuff mixed in with some mid stuff.

I liked this way more than I thought but its not a standout by any means

I think a later poppier MSP CD might have been my first ever album. Interesting to listen to their punkier stuff. I liked a few songs but found most of it wasn't very catchy.

Decent punk thing, don't know enough bible lore to get the references

I only got one listen in on this album so I can't really give it more than a 3 right now. After reading more of the backstory behind it, I want to give it a listen in that headspace. The problem with this site is that a day isnt long enough. I'll need to revisit this again.

This album has purpose. You can feel and hear the passion, the urgency and need of the Preachers to get these songs out. I was surprised to learn this was released in 1994. Very pivotal time for the public’s musical taste to turn. This is good garage band music that I will forever vibe with. There’s some good guitar riffs here. It’s got me curious as to what else this particular scene in the UK during that time had to offer. Great listen.

I enjoyed it, but a day later don’t really remember it.

Having heard of this band, but not heard them, this was not what I expected. I expected like a weak Oasis clone which, at the time in the 90s, I didn’t particular needed because I didn’t particularly like Oasis. Pleasantly surprised by this. They sound like Fugazi with production values. Nothing stands out but I’d listen again.

Im super on the fence, hot n cold. I like this and i hate this.

Rock didn't rock me but I was able to listen to it 3/5

262/1089 - Reading a bit about this before listening, I was expecting a real downer, but it just sounds like The Dead Kennedy's with news interludes in-between. I think I overall don't resonate as heavily as others do with the "tortured and depressed rock artist" archetype because of my classical music background. If I want to feel really depressed, I'll put on some Shostakovich. He feared for his life constantly under the rule of Stalin, one of the worst dictators ever, and once Stalin died and Shostakovich could enjoy slightly more freedom, he had to deal with ALS and died of the complications. You can hear the ALS in his later works too! It became too hard for him to physically write music at some points so the music became very sparse and bleak. Genuinely hard for me to listen to sometimes knowing the historical context. I don't know why I'm writing all of this, go listen to Shostakovich's 8th String Quartet and 1st Violin Concerto, they're great.

Really dug the music. But despite watching BBC television my entire life, I can't understand anything the singer is saying. It was almost comical how few words I picked up listening to this.

Music written under the influence of depression and suicidal tendencies.

Not very special

I understand this album is supposed to have some great lyrics. Cool, except it takes some concentrating to understand what they're singing. I thought the music was great. It gave me Green Day vibes. Of course, that is probably just the general sound of the mid-90's.

Another I ended up liking more than I thought I would, but by the end it felt like an hour of sameness.

Fun and energetic. Not my absolute favorite, but it was great as background music. Could see this on a Tony Hawk soundtrack.

Good music I guess

It was a good punk rock album, and I think I liked "she is suffering" the most, but I hated having to stare at the album at work for an hour

Not my cup of tea. Decent punk rock album, but definitely not a favorite. It wasn't bad in terms of I couldn't listen to all of it, but I don't think I'd opt to listen to again.

Idk I didn’t hate it?

Aika erikoinen

I’ve never actually listened to Manic Street Preachers, and I guess I expected them to sound a little different, possibly less Britpop than this turned out to be. I didn’t dislike it, but nothing really stood out to me either. I couldn’t name a favorite song, but I couldn’t point to any songs I disliked either. So I guess middle of the road. I would rate a 2.5 if I could, but I’m rounding up.

Better than I was expecting. Decent alternative album with a few good songs.

Idk about this one. A lot of people seemed to love or hate this, but I didn’t feel strongly either way. The music was pretty good but I definitely had a hard time deciphering the lyrics on many of the songs. Revol and P.C.P. were the standout tracks I really enjoyed.

not my favorite type of music but this had its moments! a little long but the best song was the last so it’s okay

Started out well but then faded into the background for me.

Thought it was alright at the time but 10 minutes later I certainly couldn't humm a single track. Generally forgettable angst-rock

This really grew on me. It's got a kinda Jane's Addiction/ LA Metal (non hairband) sound while also being at least thematically like "American Idiot."

Feels like old punk. Not really my style but I enjoyed it for the most part.

Overall, this sounds like so many other 90s punk albums, so it's hard to know the appropriate rating scale. Is it better than Smash? Or any of Green Day's 90's works? No, but it has a cool sound and seems thoughtful and contemplative, without diving into the lyrics too much. It almost sounded like a rock opera at times, particularly by the time we got to Faster. Honestly the album also plays very similar to Antichrist Superstar at times too, except I don't think Manic Street Preacher was blamed for causing Columbine. I love the clip of the person saying they know they'll regret their entire lives and wish to relive it on their death bed, it's both the cause and the effect of punk. Unrelated note, I really thought they were chanting "freeball" during "Revol", and maybe that's the difference between US and UK punk - it's totally feasible that a US band could be shouting FREEBALL FREEBALL FU FU FUCK FRUIT OF THE LOOM BRING OUT THE PLATOON PREPARING THE TOMB AND SEND THAT SHIT TO THE MOON FREEBALL Also I went full Vaasavi on The Intense Humming of Evil, I couldn't understand a word that were saying 3/5

Listening notes: -This rocks for a start. But music does not live by rocking alone. -I get the sense we've got a lot of politics here, which I'm definitely not listening closely enough to give thoughts on. But it seems a little unsubtle--I'm not going to review the politics though because I have too much music to catch up on. Actually, I will say: there seems to be a lot of self-destruction that our singers want to blame on the political/economic system and I think a lot of self-destruction is underrated in the degree to which it stems from within, which I guess is kinda bleak but w/e. -She is Suffering sounds cool, and after a few listens, I don't *think* it's misogynistic. Not even sure this is in reference a person though. Review: Good stuff. Nothing seems particularly amazing though. I liked the first track. 3 stars

If the point of language is to effectively communicate concepts and ideas, then this is not language. But if the point of music is to communicate emotions and feelings, then oh boy, does this communicate emotions and feelings. Mostly anger - but that is an emotion. Adding this to my fuck the world playlists.

the first song, “Yes,” blows everything else out of the water

Pretty good rock album. I never listened to this band before, but I’ll definitely check out more of them.

Cooler than I thought it’d be. Some good song writing. Didn’t connect fully with it but I do want to listen to it some more.

Average

Not listened to this before, as they were not a band I got into. Maybe I should have as there is a lot of skill and energy going on. I really should get my arse into gear and listen to their back catalogue sometime.

At times the vocals had a Freddie Mercury quality to them. I liked this and could listen again but I can't give it a 4. 3.5/5

Was not familiar

Kinda Incubus, kinda Billy Talent. Alright in my books.

Pretty good.

3.2 Slightly surprised by this one, I've always thought of MSP as yet another Britpop band, but this outing was a lot punkier and darker than that. The vocals do start to get tiring over the course of an hour, the one or two softer ones are not frequent enough, and in the case of The Intense Humming appear too late. Interesting, but I'm not that interested.

Not a bad album, but doesn’t quite hold your attention either. Subject matter is interesting, but the music isn’t as compelling. 2.5/5 Might listen again

Dark subject matters dealt with here. Post-punk sound, and influences of Clash to GnR are audible. Vocals tend to get a little to glam for my taste, but the songs are great and this album is very strong straight through. Torn between 3 & 4 stars.

Not terrible, though, I did not like the cover. Eww They have an interesting sound.

Didn't find this one all that special.

lots of respect for the poetry in this album. It's heavy and clearly is trying to question society as it is. I didn't love the music itself, but can acknowledge how difficult of a project this must have been to create

The slightly annoying brand of 90s rock music. I wonder if there was a time in my life where I might have liked it, but it ain't today.

Faster p.c.p. nochmal hören?

6.5/10

This was ok. Wasn't that memorable tbh. Preferred the other album of theirs I had previously - Everything Must Go 3 ⭐️

heard of the band but never actually listened to their music. didn’t know they’re welsh, like me, bosh. overall i’d say the music was tidy, i enjoyed the last couple tracks more than the rest but i liked the overall theme, heavy sound and lyrics, solid record. 3.5/5

Pop-rock with a bit of an edge. Not bad, but nothing really stuck with me that would keep me coming back.

Not the best by MSP. I think a lot of their other albums have more range and more to offer in general. Overall not what I would consider a representation of their best work

I liked it enough but the songs get too repetitive for being an hour long album

It was ok, I’m not massively in to the preachers I didn’t know any songs on the album. It’s one I didn’t mind but I wouldn’t be rushing to listen to it again

Don't love the singer, the music itself wasn't bad though, good album structure, would listen again, but probably won't

Manic Street Preachers is such a hard name that I don’t even care how the music sounds. Luckily, it doesn’t sound too bad. It’s not gonna stick to my mind and it wasn’t life changing but I enjoyed the listen enough to give it a 3.3.

I have to admit I had a hard time listening attentively to this album. I imagine that if I did I would probably have enjoyed it a bit more.

Solid Rock music with some nice sprinkles of innovation. It gets you going. For me, it was more background music though.

This wasn't half bad! I love a theme, or at least a connected band name and album title. The Holy Bible is a tad early for alternative music, and I feel like Manic Street Preachers knew how to make good alternative rock for 1994. The album flowed and had a great beat. I loved when songs got political, especially the long-titled "Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart." Hell yeah.

You know, this wasn't bad. But I can't really say it resonated with me, either. It all kind of blended together for me. That is to say, I picked up on the general vibes of the album, but no one song stood out to me. Still though, I guess the overall vibe of this album earns it a high 2 or a low 3 from me.

Decent. Not bad, not drop dead amazing (must hear before I die? no). Britpop/rock at it's peak. This list is loaded with it. I'm tired of it. 2.75/5 = 3 stars.

Not at all what I expected but nothing that really grabbed me, overall it’s fine (2.5/5)

Was a bit turned off by the theme of the lyrics but was fine to listen to.

Some of this is alright, and some more is good. It's interesting to me how this album and band were playing the kind of music I listened to at the time, that I was devouring music and developing a taste at this time, and somehow this never came to my attention. This COULD have wound up becoming something I listened to a thousand times. I think everyone has a band they feel like they're the band's only fan (for me, it's Self), and I feel like this band who never came to my attention is probably that for a lot of people. Mausoleum was really cool and caught my attention really quickly. Parts reminded me of REM Die in the Summertime sounds like of a lot of other stuff I was listening to at the time. Sort of reminds me of Porno for Pyros(?) And sort of Alice in Chains, maybe? I'm not sure how I feel about this album. It's good and I like it, but I feel like I'd need some real history with it to be able to rate it higher than a 3

First of many more to come! Rotation: This is yesterday P.C.P.

Kind of meh.

\m/ Solid overall \m/

Honestly a brilliant album and very worthwhile listen. The lyrics paint the images Richey Edwards was suffering with while writing this album leading up to his disappearance. The melodies were unique, however I did find the actual stories being written a bit rudimental and lacking creativity outside of their topics, and I wouldn't listen to any of the songs on their own, otherwise this would have been a 4 star for me.

Fun but nothing too memorable.

Not bad but could have been trimmed down to 40-45 minutes

A little too long, but quite enjoyable!

There's a few very nice songs, that's a nice band, I can't complain, but is it something that was so breakthrough that it will be forever remembered and important? I'm really not sure. The album is a little long-winded (again). 3 stars will do it.

"The Holy Bible by Welsh alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers" is the answer you got when you asked the edgy loner kid / pick me girl what music they are listening to.

This is a pretty decent album for a band I'd always heard of but never really listened to back in the 90s. But it fits pretty well into that era, and appeals to me as a lover of grunge and alternative from early 90s. 4st 7lbs is a solid stand out track on first listen. Might throw that on a playlist. The Intense Humming of Evil almost sounds like a NIN song. 3.5

Not quite the good book... but.

Never heard of them, music was decent.

Very good 90s Alt-punk from a band I'd never heard of.

pretty good, needs another listen

Power pop with a hint of grunge - rocks hard at times. Not unpleasant to listen too but gets a bit monotonous and breaks no new ground musically

Good. If I heard it in its time I might have played it a few times. Didn’t love the recurring gimmick of movie/media clips to start almost every song. I’m too old to hear this for the first time

I'm aware from the reviews I should have concentrated harder on the lyrics, but musically this isn't very engaging. I've never quite loved the Manics, though they actually have a pretty good catalogue of songs from their career. This though doesn't even have that. It's probably worth another go at some point.

I never bothered to listen to this band before now, but this was solid. I like the music for the most part. Undecided how I feel about the vocals, they're not bad but they're my least favorite aspect of their sound. Might dig in to some other albums to see if that changes my mind.

A rollercoaster. I've already heard this, and in my remembrance of it, it's a bit overrated. But listening to it again, I find more parts of it to enjoy. Obviously, the lyrics, but also the gritty guitar work and the commanding drum sounds, are immediately apparent. But as it goes on, the quality starts to falter a bit, and we arrive right where we started: a 3.5 album, that borders on 3.75, but cant quite make it. Maybe some day. ⭐⭐⭐1/2

I enjoyed this album! The guitar work was especially impressive, lots of catchy riffs and passages. P.C.P was a fun, driving song.

Too rocky for me today. Good lyrics, a little dated.

Punk attitude which somewhat overstays it’s welcome. You can feel it pushing against its own time; I’d have likely adored this were I the right age then.

The music doesn't really seem to align with the interstitials and the lyrics. Maybe it's a bit dated but it feels a bit safe for what the politics are.. generally okay ish rock.

High energy, but kind of annoying.

It didn't blow me away musically, but I really enjoyed hearing the stories told on this album. They touched upon many interesting subjects like politics, mental health, wars, serial killers, social problems. The album made even more sense after browsing their Wiki page. Lyrics - 5, music - 3, vocals - 3. I guess I'm giving this 3.5 stars.

I did not use a private session for this one. I had one Manic Street Preachers album that got some play, it wasn't this one, though it could have been. I like it, as promised it does get a manic so you have to be in the correct mode to listen to it.

Thoughts before listening: Is this more brit-pop? Or at least 90s alt-rock from Britain (are those the same thing)? I have definitely heard of these guys but I don't know much about them. The cover is....interesting? Hopefully the music is as well. Review: So this is actually my second album from these guys on this project...and I had pretty similar thoughts before listening lol. I gave that album 3-stars and thats probably right for this one as well. These guys sound definitely fits in closer with the 90s American indie rock or pop punk sound than the brit-pop of their British contemporaries. There are some catchy tunes on here that I have added to my playlist although nothing is blowing me away. 3-stars

This is really interesting, I don't know that I would sit down and listen to this cover to cover...but it is catchy! Vocals are the weakness

Good britpop album. I prefer their later stuff, but this is good as well despite being less melodic.

Not bad, but it gets monotonous rather quick

A low three high two that I’ll round up. Not my cup of tea, but i can appreciate some of it. Faves: yes, pcp.

Didn't mind this - Redd Kross vibes. Another band I have heard the name for ages, but never sought out. And sad back-story. Oh well...

not bad

More non-Americans thinking they're cool and edgy for making fun of America and thinking they can solve all of our problems by criticizing us. As for the music I couldn't tell whether it was good or just repetitive. Maybe it would have helped if I could have heard anything that he was saying.

Solid Rock album.

Definitely not normally my kind of thing, but it never got too heavy and the lyrics were pretty intense.

This is better than the first MSP, but I don’t get it. It should be right up my alley, but it isn’t. 2.5

On paper I should like this album better, but it remains... One of those albums that to me it's history or rather the history of events that occurred during the album's cycle (Rickey Edwards goes missing for one) is more interesting than the music not that the music isn't pretty good (it is) it just doesn't grab me all that strongly and not something I'm likely to ever play again. That's about it. I listened to it twice this morning & had heard it a few times during high school and my opinion of the album is exactly the same - good album by a talented band that for whatever reason fails to resonate with me on any level. Rickey Edwards (band lyricist, backing vocals & I guess some guitar) went missing on the first of February 1995 & was legally presumed dead in 2008. It's widely believed that he committed suicide. A body was never found/recovered. 4REAL.

Fine. Feels a little dated. If I was aware of this band back in high school I could see myself digging them.

Heavy, edgy, political. The songs I could understand at least. It's not life changing, but it's good.

Probably should like this more and there is certainly some good guitar based power pop on show here. I just get the feeling that it’s all a bit contrived and they’re trying too hard

Me listening: — ugh, always heard of, never wanted to actually hear — (plays album) oof, British people really love passionate singing, huh? — I can see why I never listened. — wait, what is this song? I love this! And the song after was really good! — is this my new favorite thing? Why haven’t I ever listened to this?! — (plays again) wait, this is horrible. What was I thinking? — wait, this is so good! What is happening?! — repeat

This is the kind of thing I think I could really enjoy but just with a couple listens I couldn’t really differentiate between a lot of the songs. I enjoyed the punky hard rock sort of vibes though and the strong accent of the singer was fun to listen to. So overall wasn’t too memorable butt really not too bad.

This album is pretty unrelenting in its messages. It's a bundle of disturbing/heavy subject matter; ranging from fascism, the death penalty, anorexia, and the Holocaust among many, many others. Simply reading the lyrics isolated from the music would make one think that these tracks were written by an insane person. The verse construction is a bit awkward as a result, I can't imagine trying to write music around all of THAT. It all hits a little differently after learning that the majority songwriter on this album, Richey Edwards, had been fighting his own demons and unfortunately disappeared shortly after this album's release. Was this an effective album? Maybe, depending on who you ask. I know I wouldn't ever want to listen to this album again, so maybe that answers that question.

A few years ago I would’ve been potentially territorial about non-Americans being so critical of America, but at this point it’s totally fair and warranted. Not that this album is strictly critical, it is at times scathing, and at times painting a caricature of people here. And that’s understood! The highlight here is the insanely named “ IFWHITEAMERICATOLDTHETIUTHFORONEDAYIT'SWORLDWOULDFALLAPART” for obvious reasons. There’s a handful of good hooks here that are indicators of a pop-punky (NOT pop punk, pop-punky) formula that would be commonplace years later. My criticism of this record comes in the form of how it stays at the same level of energy and noise until “This Is Yesterday” which gets a little bit more quiet, then the rest of the album resumes that same level of noise once more. Some variation would be nice. Solid social-awareness/protest album

My fav MSP album, somewhat dated

Lots of indecipherable singing. Liked the first two songs.

This was generally good, but only a couple songs (Faster and Die in the Summertime) really stood out for a relisten.

This covered a fair amount of ground but I did find it an interesting listen. It felt a bit long and could lose a couple of songs but I got more from this than I have from some others. Doubt I'd relisten but glad I heard it once.

Had the same issue with “Everything Must Go”. It’s good music. It might even be very good music. It’s a far sight from great, though. At this same time, it takes itself so seriously that it’s utterly joyless. Something to admire, but not to enjoy.

Correcto

This one needs more time, and a resistencia or two, but first impressions is that it's good. Not great, but good. When the first track came on I was expecting to really love this. It just kind of lost steam near the middle. Closing track is great though. Lyrics are clearly complex, and I need more time to think about and absorb them. Standouts: ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart, Revol, P.C.P
