Good lyrics. Good beats.

I can see how some people might be turned off by the vocals. I was a bit iffy at first, but grew to like them more and more. The lyrics and music are very dark, some of which felt like a big "f**k you" to everyone and everything. The more I listened to the album, the more I dug it. The only problem is the first listen to it, you may be "what is this?" But I think listening to it twice is more rewarding. But for me, I try to give a rating on the first listen. So I'm a bit conflicted there. Still, I'd give it a 3.6, rounding up to a 4. Top tracks: "She Is Suffering," "Faster"

I loved Everything Must Go, so I was excited to see this one come up. But, man, this one hits hard. The music is great, but the lyrics are DARK. Like, uncomfortably so. It's almost relieving that most of the time I couldn't tell what James Dean Bradfield was singing (he has very unusual cadences and pronunciations, but he sounds cool). Especially 4st 7lb - that one was really tough (about anorexia, which lyricist Richey Edwards suffered from, among the many things he suffered from before vanishing, presumably from suicide). Add in songs about despots, genocide, serial killers, and more and it's just an incredibly difficult album. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate dark music, but the lyrics started to feel oppressive (which might be what they were going for). I definitely loved the music - great songs and playing - I just don't think I could listen to this album too many times without falling into a serious hole of despair.

Solid rock, but I'd have to listen to it more to really rate it properly.

Geweldig album! Ik kende enkel hun grootste hits, maar dit is wel echt ook een pareltje. Leuke sound, mooie stem en nice teksten! 3.9

Good loud, rockish and old good sound

i wasn't looking forward to this one, but i was pleasantly surprised. this reminds me a lot of against me. i feel like i really need to pore over these lyrics more carefully to get the full effect of them.

Gostei para caramba!! Quero ouvir mais!!! Muito bom!! Punk rock bem dinâmico, sem ficar enjoativo.

I really liked it, great to drive to

Cover 6.5 Great album. Queen meets Scorpions.

Sort of a tricky one I have mixed feelings on. It sounds great in a lot of places. It also sounds kinda generic? But there’s an undercurrent of rage that bubbles under the surface but never seems to take over

I was really surprised by this album. I didn't think I would like it all that much, let alone think that it's a great album, but here we are. I think part of why I think that is my music taste growing up. This sounds a lot like other things that I was listening to in my teen years, even if the content and context isn't something I would have been allowed to listen to at the time. I don't think that this album does anything particularly special, but I also had a hard time really actually picking out the lyrics. I got the gist of what was being said, though, even without the literal words. This album actually gets a save from me to listen to again later! Favorite Song(s): The second track lol, Archives of Pain, Mausoleum, Faster

Never heard them before but really good stuff, great guitar and drums, great vocals, and interesting themes. I enjoyed this overall, and will listen again to get more familiar with them.

distilled essence of 1994

This was an album that was everywhere when I was but a kid. Darker and heavier than the other far more upbeat previous offerings. This brought back many memories of drinking shitty cider in parks. Decent album, loosing a point for the taste of rancid cider i get in my mouth when I hear it.

Pretty decent album, might go back to it again.

Still such an exciting record!

I actually quite like the Manics, especially that one album that's really good whose name I can't remember, but I listened to this twice today and I literally can't remember anything about it. Hope they find the guy who's been missing, 30 years though.

I think this album is much more interesting than a lot of people are giving it credit for. The opening one-two punch of "Yes" and "Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart" makes for a total lyrical powerhouse, and both songs feature some pretty solid shifting arrangements and melodies. Perhaps my biggest gripe is that I don't think any of the following songs quite reach that same level, but I don't think any of them are remotely weak. "She Is Suffering", "Revol", and "Die in the Summertime" are additional highlights in my book, and again, far more lyrically fascinating than a lot of MSP's contemporaries. I didn't know Richey Edwards' story until halfway through the record, when I began to really sense the pain in these songs and read a bit more into them, and that context heightened my appreciation for it even more. I think this one could very well rise for me with repeated listens. 4/5

I went into this completely blind and was so surprised. The themes are very dark but I loved that each song was different and had important things to say, and it also sounded great. I could do without the final track, but I am so pleasantly surprised by this one.

Somehow missed out on this band while growing up in the 90s. Had a blast with it! Found some great new songs. Will definitely relisten. 4.5/5

3.5 rounded up, 'The Intense Humming of Evil' almost made it a 3

fun! upbeat. a surprising listen.

The slightly heavier, more angular sounding tunes on here are great - 4st 7lb through to The Intense Humming of Evil, mainly - but they make me wish the rest of the record had the same grit. 3.5*

A solid album in the alternative genre. A band I'd heard the name of but never gave a solid listen to. The Intense Humming of Evil was a departure that I enjoyed a lot. This is an album I will likely go back to.

Manic is probably the best word to use to describe this album. The music itself is very good. The guitar tone, the riffs, the bass, the drumming, all great. It's not very elegant or coherent, but the point of it is to be abrasive to create a fast-paced, manic atmosphere that conveys the sort of paranoia and self-disgust Richey was feeling (reading about his sufferings and disappearance makes the album feel a lot more). It makes it very disturbing, especially with taking the lyrics into consideration. The lyrics would be 10x more effective if I could actually understand what he was saying without having to follow along with the lyrics

Nice rock, alt metalish sound. Solid mixing but hard to hear vocals and lyrics are too political.

I liked it.

I enjoyed it, but that's probably because I didn't understand most of the lyrics. Except Tipper Gore is a friend of mine. 4.

I can't believe I haven't listened to this band before. This album is right up my alley. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

17/04/2025 Never listened to the Preachers before and this was okay.

This one hit me like a bolt of lightning. Once my muscles relax, my teeth unclench, and the burn scars heal, I'm going to listen to it again.

God not great

Definitely a 90s album

Very interesting album. Each song tell a different story

I had tried to get into MSP in the past with less success than what I had with this album. Maybe I was just need to go to the earlier stuff? Pretty solid all around...a little harder than their contemporaries. 4/5

I'm not sure how I missed this album, but it's really good. A solid 4 stars.

The prelude to greatness

Not really my cup of tea but sounded a fair bit ahead of its time

Lordy!

This band has a lot to say about the political and economic state of the world. Also really dives into the depressed and self harming band member’s psyche before his eventual disappearance.

Love the manics. I came in post-Richey for Everything Must Go so their earlier stuff i had to find later. The energy, the drive, the anger and the poetry all make this top class. I'm not smart enough to decipher the lyrics so i always just loved that they stood for something. I'm in a minority that thinks the best of the Manics isnt the lyrics of Richey/Nicky. I think JDB is one of the best front men of his generation and i saw them live in 2024 and he still fucking rules.

Rating: 4/5 | Favorite Track: Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart --- This was my introduction to Manic Street Preachers and I did not expect to like this album as much as I did. Political alternative rock with a nihilistic, dark post-punk edge. An excellent listen even with the challenging content matter pervasive throughout.

I love the Manic Street Preachers! Interesting choice for an album. I would assume it’s their only entry on the list, and while a classic album the holy bible doesn’t have any of the band’s biggest hits on it. It is 100% on brand manic street preachers. Fast, furious, melodic and filled with righteous rage. I think the manics walk a very fine line. Is their rage over American racism and female body image issues inspiring or is it comical? It’s hard to say, but I’m completely on board. Four stars.

Includes an additional star for pissing off the all the God 'n Guns evangelical nut jobs.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Only knowing them from the song If You Tolerate This, I had unfairly written them off as just another britpop band. This actually has some passion and balls to it.

Great album

I was really thrown by this, and heavily reminded that you should never judge a book by its cover.

Pretty fun album to listen to even though i didn’t love a lot of the individual songs. Not a big fan of the cover though

this shit slaps

Favorite songs: Archives of Pain, She Is Suffering, Revol, P.C.P., Yes, Of Walking Abortion Least favorite songs: 4st 7lb, The Intense Humming of Evil 4/5

Better than I thought it would be, when the description invoked Britpop. Very interesting, but hard for me to pin down what exactly it is. Might look more into this band though.

I had never heard of this. It sounded like “Make an album that teenager Michael would’ve loved,” so I’m sad I missed it when I was a teenager. But I still really liked it, though an hour was a bit much for 44 year old Michael.

British band, but they sound American (besides the accent). Style wise they're closer to Smashing Pumpkins and Jimmy Eat World than to Blur and Oasis. As the album progressed, I liked it more and more. Favorite song: Revol

Die in the summertime is a highlight for me

I really liked this. It had a bit SOAD vibes

Coll strange tragic

I’m mostly rating this out of naivety because I think I’d need to listen to this at least ten more times to be able to phrase intelligent thoughts about it. This album is so dense and they put forth a lot of meaning in one album. The music was good and everything felt like it was a heightened emotion. It was deeply angry and sad (in a good way I think). I will say by the end I was a little sick of the amount of opening voice memos but I think I could get over that.

The world is currently (FEB2025) much too bleak for me to cope with the final lyrics from Richey Edwards on The Holy Bible. Depressing x2, but a great alt rock record nonetheless.

Nossa, é um rockzinho legal. Diria que até bem diferente do que temos nos anos 90. Um rockzinho mais agudo, que não é normalmente o que eu gosto de ouvir, mas consegui aproveitar esse álbum. Gostei de Yes, Archives of Pain, Mausoleum e Faster.

Counts: 1 unlistenable 3-4 super mid 8-9 heaters

Painful Angry Makes you think

Just for the album cover

Better than i thought - good energy. Newer stuff sounds tired and formulaic but this was quite fresh

Before pivoting to ride the britpop wave, MSP was making dirty, gritty alt rock. Most of this comes from Richey Edwards and his struggles with substance abuse and poor mental health, which found it's way into the lyrics of The Holy Bible with a range of dark, disturbing songs over fairly upbeat instrumentation. It's brimming with off-kilter personality that I actually find myself enjoying large portions of the album. This came at a cost, however, as Edwards would soon disappear after the release of the Holy Bible. Obviously, his well-being played a factor, but no one knows what happened to him. What was left behind was a fantastic string of songs for everyone to enjoy.

Definitely better than their other album on the list - this is way darker and also more interesting.

I enjoy the Manic Street Preachers but never as much as I think I should. I feel I should worship them. They just don’t quite cross that threshold for some reason.

I really liked this one. And the shit about their guitar player is crazy.

Listwnd in 2 sittings. Enjoyed overall good energy distinctive sound and not too polished

I enjoyed it. He has a great voice

Great album. Some songs suffer from being overly political but it's MSP early work so to be expected.

Love it! I definitely hear from this album the beginnings of the late 90's-early 00's emo sound

This one really surprised me - never heard of the band or any of these tunes, but I enjoyed the listen quite a bit. The instrumentation, writing, vocals are all good.

Solid addition to the list

New to me, and couldn’t be happier to experience. A well crafted rock album that warrants more listens to explore the themes presented. Great listen.

Much better than I expected. Damn shame about the lead.

I liked this, was heavier and lyrically very dark. Really interesting album

I feel so mixed about this album, the kind of album that in theory should be one of my absolute faves but its execution is not my favorite. It has a cool, dark rock sound that takes from some of older post-punk/goth as well as the better parts of hard rock, it sounds like my thing but somewhere along the way the album either fades into the background or has songs with amazing and incredible parts and other more meh that just don't quite click with me. It's almost like if I could cut some songs it would be one of the coolest things ever and don't get me wrong, it IS a good album but I feel like it hasn't quite clicked with me in the way I wish it did

Quite difficult to listen to this, knowing what happened afterwards. It still sounds good and Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart is still just about the most accurate song title ever written. Except for the apostrophe, obviously!

A real fuck-off album from some real lads, the depth of this album was a pleasant surprise. It's so political and well-thought out without ever turning posh or aiming for appeal. A bit much at times, but a distinct work of art from the mid 90's 3.75/5

Who knew some of the most anti-establishment and truly stong left leaning bands would be Welsh? I love the Manics in many of their forms, and while I'm more familiar with their later albums - revisiting this record, especially given the current political climate - it's quite on point throughout. Like most Manics albums it takes a few tries to really know the record - and this exercise does not make it easy - however grew to love most of the tracks now, and as a full record, it's a strong, poignant and cohesive piece of political art.

“The Holy Bible” gets off to a great start with “Yes,” and I’m quickly wondering why I know the name but not the music. Or why I know the name, but not the story of the disappearance of lyricist and guitarist Richey Edwards five months after this album was released. Seems like a momentous story right at the time I was really starting to pay attention to music. I assume it was a bigger story in the UK?

A hidden gem of the early 90s, buried amongst Britpop no doubt. The bass and lead guitars are great.

I was expecting another boring art piece album when I saw the cover but was pleasantly surprised. Pretty rocking album and the weirdness of the band members disappearance made for an interesting read while enjoying the album.

Quite a striking album. As that extremely passionate and pretty convincing review from the hardcore fan of Manic Street Preachers topping this section puts it, it's not always an easy ride or even a pleasant listen, but the record sure has its share of memorable moments. Just like its cover, this LP comes off as uncompromising art with disturbing yet also fascinating features. It's still poppy and melodic as far as rock albums generally go, oddly enough, especially in its first half, thanks to earworms "She Is Suffering", "Revol" or "Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforoneday...". But it's also so "angular" that you feel like you might get pricked just listening to most those songs. Like some sort of British version of early Green Day, only far more political and provocative. And, indeed, the lyrical contents of the album feel like a testament documenting the obsessions of Richey Edwards during his last days on this earth. He didn't sing his own lyrics, James Dean Bradfield sang them instead. But his ghost ominously looms over the proceedings here. Stylistically speaking, not everything in the album aged gracefully, though. But it's still a *huge* improvement compared to the band's hackneyed, immature hard rock -inspired debut. After Edwards's disappearance, Manic Street Preachers would reinvent themselves as an even more melodic and streamlined britpop act -- still exploring the same leftist agenda, fortunately, but with various results musically and artistically speaking (from the overrated *This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours* -- whose very catchy singles belied the actual drowsy -- and even at times inert -- contents of the album, to the more exciting *Everything Must Go* and *Know Your Enemy* bookending that particular letdown). But I guess all of this is a story for another time, kiddies... 3.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 4. 8.5 for more general purposes (5 + 3.5) Number of albums left to review: 15 (plus the 80-ish extra LPs listed on this app, included because different past versions of the book have mentioned albums that have since been dropped in subsequent editions) Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 423 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 253 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 313

4 maybe 5

9/10. At first, it seemed to be a mere decent Britpop album. However, as it progressed, it began getting better. The usage of what appears to be sampled quotes at the beginning of some songs, as well as the lyrics regarding numerous serious topics really bring a very interesting vibe to the album as a whole. I don't usually like the vocals from a Britpop album, but the vocals here are incredible. Speaking of vocals, I find the fact that the vocalist who sang in this song disappeared to give this album another meaning. I am also fond of the general instrumentation in this album. Overall, it's a really great listen, and all of its layers really intrigue me!!! :)

A great album. Enjoyed it since first hearing ‘Yes’ 12 years ago. Yes, ifwhiteamerica, walking abortion, archives of pain, 4st 7lb, mausoleum, intense humming all have powerful poignant lyrics and the sound is a good embodiment of British rock.

fantastic

Really enjoyed this one. 4/5

I enjoyed the album and thought it had some good sound. Didn’t care for the rhetoric, but I was able to look past my biases. Standouts: Yes, She Is Suffering, 4st 7lb, Faster, and This Is Yesterday.

I quite enjoyed this one! Very cool musical choices overall, britpop with punk edges executed really well!

The Holy Bible was a really good album. The first few songs weren't exactly the greatest to me, either that or i just wasn't in the groove yet. But it was by track 4 that it really started to grow on me. The tracks could either be fast, frenetic and fun, or they could be much more villainous with some pretty haunting melodies especially with those bass lines. I still do not think that any of the songs from this album are bad either, sure the first 3 might have been a little forgettable but they still were good. Geez, why do so many britpop albums go this hard? Best Song: The Intense Humming of Evil Worst Song: Yes

Welsh Altrock. Goes hard. Pretty angsty. Reminds me of US rockbands from that time. Fantastic rock album. Very ‘süffig’.

It's a Dark record. Though it's a great. One.

I'm going to have to go back and listen to Everything Must Go, because I really enjoyed The Holy Bible. The sound is a little more impactful and the song writing more appealing to my sensibilities. I've seen the cover so many times and I always assumed it was for an alt-metal album or something.

4 out of 5. Another album from a band I've heard of before but hadn't listened to yet, and this was a pleasant surprise with their melodic blitzes.

First time listening to Manic Street Preachers. Cool alternative rock style with punk attitude and drumming.

Had to double check when this came out - these guys sound very modern. Overall I really liked the album and one of the better surprises. 8/10.

Do you like to listen to songs that have lyrics about politics and might be a little controversial? The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers has songs that you might like. I thought this was a good album I liked the instrumental, his vocals and the lyrics. I like the sound of the bass that this album has, He sounds like Freddy Mercury without the high vocals. This is a great album I would listen to in the background of whatever I am doing.

Do you want upbeat rock songs? You should listen to these songs! In my opinion, I like these songs and I recommend that you listen to them! I like the upbeat rock songs that they are. And I love the guitar in the background. I don't listen to the lyrics but I like the songs in general, l like the way his voice sounds. I highly recommend you listen to these songs, if you want upbeat rock songs.

Kind of sounds like finding the missing link between Queen and My Chemical Romance (Christ, I'm going to be crucified for that take). A lot of punk and glam snot throughout. Hits a lull in the middle but manages to pick it back up. Strong lyrically. Favorite tracks: "Of Walking Abortion", "She Is Suffering", "The Intense Humming Of Evil", "PCP"

creative and passionate but it’s all so on the edge it’s like an emotional jackhammer

Alternative rock. I liked it a lot, wish the vocalist was a little more clear. I thought he was hard to understand. Also hated the song with feedback, always hurts my ears.

I think this would get even better with subsequent listens. Surprised me.

Sounded so much newer than 1994. I was really imagining a lot of this fitting in with radio rock of the late 90s and wondering why I had never heard it. So engaging and well-produced and loved the bass.

This was fun!

Hey, this sounds kind of like Against Me! I've heard a couple tracks by these guys but never an album, and I will have to give this another listen. Another loss for Bitches Who Can't Understand Lyrics the First Seven Times They Hear them!!! I bet there's some good critique in here.

As much as the cover disturbs me, the music is actually pretty good. 4/5

Really fucked with this album. It gave me hints of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and some other bands I’m blanking on but I really enjoyed it.

This is probably one of my lower 4s, but I really liked the album. Fun to hear something that you like that you’ve never heard before. Sounds very familiar and like the kind of music I would’ve liked outside of the list. Very glad this album was on here!

I really liked this one! The 90s alternative sound was right up my alley and I’m honestly surprised I hadn’t ever heard of them before. I can hear different influences from previous musical acts and what I assume are influences on later bands. The lyrics are full of introspection, political commentary, and critiques of popular culture. They can be dark at times and tackle some difficult subject matter, but I think that adds a lot to the experience. I would not mind at all to have more Manic Street Preachers albums.

they could’ve cut the weird intros to these songs and made this album like 10 minutes shorter highlights: yes, faster, this is yesterday, p.c.p (oct 3 2024)

Kunnon pre- My Chemical Romance! Hyvä. Vähän enemmän bängereitä vois olla, tiedämme MSP:llä olevan taidot siihen. Ensikuulemalta tässä ei ole kuin She is suffering. Mutta etenkin alussa hyvin vahva meno, b-puolella emompi eli vähän puuduttavampi. Ei ehkä kirkkain nelonen, mut nautin suuren osan ajasta.

This album grew on me more and more as I delved deeper into it. While I'm not initially a big fan of the vocalist's voice, I'm sure it will grow on me over time. This album offers a raw and gritty alternative sound with influences from grunge, post-punk, and punk. For anyone who enjoys the raw, stripped-down sound of indie rock, this is an album you'll probably appreciate.

I've been aware of The Manic Street Preachers for a while, but never really listen to their stuff before. Very interesting guitar parts, almost metal at some points. I think the vocalist is what is holding me back the most here. His voice is fine, but something about the way he sings just doesn't mesh the best with the instrumentals in my opinion. Putting that aside, this album is constantly shifting and throwing out new ideas that keep you on your toes.

I liked this far more than I didn't. Very alternative, quite British, strong rock sound.

Something that this list has really helped me with, is making me aware of other fantastic britpop bands other than just Blur, Pulp, and Oasis. And Manic Street Preachers are no exception. This fantastic powerhouse of an album delivers some of the most fun, energetic, and diverse britpop I have heard in a while.

Very dark and intense album with heavy lyrics. I liked the tight and punctual playing. It's not the kind of album I would listen to often, because of its heaviness, and it is also a bit too long. But credit where credit is due, it is a good album even if it is not quite my taste. 'Yes' is my favorite song from it.

Honestly quite liked it, tho the pc song was interesting. Reading the bio on the band (and listening to the album) also made me very surprised that this is my aunt's favourite band

I have heard of these guys, but never listened before. It grew on me a lot during the second listen

Pretty good stuff - I feel like they had more freedom as artists by this point and had the chance to do something edgier. My biggest problem with them is that I struggle to understand what they say, so a lot of the lyrics are missed on me.

Temas favoritos: "The intense Humming of Evil", "Yes", "Of Walking Abortion", "ifwhiteamerica..."

An interesting mix of styles and influences made this a compelling listen. Feels like a proper album as opposed to a collection of unrelated songs. Don't know how often I'll want to revisit but it was hard to look away.

On my first listen I loved this album. I'd been recommended it before but never bothered to listen until now, and considering Richey Edwards' mental state and disappearance soon after the album, the tracks seem unsettling at points. I highly recommend anyone who hasn't heard the record to listen, it's extremely underrated.

I like this more than their later work, it has an edge to it that feels genuine and angry, and even if they aren't so good with their grammar (it's) the songwriting feels just haunting enough for you to relate if you've gone through any of these feelings, and disturbed and worried if you haven't. However, the mix doesn't match the tone, as it feels really flat and doesn't allow any particular moment to shine. So, there are tons of great hooks and memorable moments, in theory, but by the end nearly every song sounds like the last, and while I enjoy the general sound enough to see it as a good time, I could also see it being a slog for those just wanting to rock out, and feeling blue-balled the whole time. Still, I think this effort is jarring yet catchy enough to win me over, and while Manic Street Preachers still haven't won me over completely, I can see why this is the defining moment for them.

It's always nice to get a new-to-me band and a new-to-me album, and this album not only ticks off both boxes, but was a pleasant surprise. I'd never have guessed they were Welsh, but that only adds to the pleasant surprise (mainly because I'm not aware of listening to too many Welsh bands). I wish the mixing was a bit better for hearing the lyrics and vocals, but I definitely like their sound and edge and the lyrics that I could make out are fittingly caustic and interesting. There are times where they're almost a rock/post-punk version of Ministry (in a good way), and other times where I'm also reminded of Jane's Addiction, but not in a imitative way. I love the title of the track "Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart" (and enjoyed the song), but am bitterly disappointed that they used "it's" instead of "its" -- I foolishly assumed that Americans had the lock on that mistake.... Reading about the album and the band on Wikipedia adds quite a bit, I'll admit, as I would never have guessed that their main lyricist (Richey Edwards) was basically spiralling out of control during the album's creation, and sadly disappeared not long afterwards. (In retrospect, though, I might have guessed some aspects of his condition with the track "4st 7lb", except that my stone-to-pounds conversion powers are very limited.) Very sad.

Solid dark Rock album

started strong but by the back half i was like wow a bunch of these just sounds like a more boring version of pixies (ex.: faster). still liked it though.

SO SO FIRE I LOVED IT

Really not what I anticipated, based on the singles I knew by them. Really good rocker and a lot more noise rock and punk-y than I expected them to be. Multiple really cool songs out of this. Really glad I got to listen this, even with that ugly album cover.

Like it!

Really enjoyed this album, was a real gut punch and with the way things are politically these days it's as relevant as ever. I have never heard of the group before so glad to have discovered them! Favourites are: Yes, 4st 7lb and ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthfornedayitsworldwouldfallapart

Didn't realise how emo and good these guys were. Not sure any one song stands out but for once that's not a bad thing.

Holy moly!

Damn, I'm enjoying the music here a TON but I get the feeling I shouldn't listen too closely to the lyrics >.<

This was weird but I enjoyed it. Energetic 90's alt rock that brings in elements of punk, post-punk and other genres. The lyrics clearly reflect the darkness the lyricist (rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards) was going through.

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did. The musical part wasn’t the greatest but the lyrics were inventive and surprisingly literary. There were several times I found myself in an internet rabbit hole after wondering what some lyric or another meant and finding out it was an allusion to something that had its own complicated history. Extremely satisfying although you would have to be in a particularly investigative mood to get the most out of it.

I was not expecting this to be as good as it was. A solid rocker

Surprisingly refreshing. They don’t quite sound like anyone else. Enjoyed the whole thing. Just under an hour is a bit long and it could have excited more, but I’m not complaining. 4/5

gooood

This album was pretty cool overall. It sounds very much of its time, but it is also interesting relative to plenty of the alt-rock coming out in 1994. Nice and heavy guitars with tons of distortion, as was the style at the time 4/5

Really enjoyed this one. Never heard of them, singer had a bit of Freddy Mercury in him.

Get ready for manic preaching on streets or rock with a purpose

Classic

This was an interesting album experience, as I thought the instrumentals were very pleasant and engaging, not a generic rock, but well composed for a rock band. I've begun reading the lyrics to songs for this project, as it's easy for me to zone out and not really pay attention to what I'm listening to. The lyrics, ay caramba, lots of them are graphic and/or grotesque and/or visceral. It's hard to understand the Welsh vocalist 80% of the time, especially when lots of words are crammed into one line. It's a very energetic and fast paced album with lots to criticize. "Faster" was one of my favorites as the speaker scrutinizes themselves. "This is Yesterday" especially stands out for it's lack of brutality, and it's a pleasant listen.

Hymnical, powerful, political comes without saying. Impressive how they managed to be so true to themselves and their version of straight-out-rock and having this combined with opulent crowd pleasing tunes without reeking of sellout.

This actually grew on me more and more as got deeper into listening to it. I’m definitely not a big fan of the dudes voice, but I’m sure as more time goes by I can get use to it more and more. Any ways this is definitely some really raw and gritty alternative with grunge, post punk, and punk influences. For anyone who likes the raw stripped down sound of indie rock, this will definitely be an album you’ll probably enjoy.

Some fucking muscle, these guys. Dang.

goes hard

really good album! I haven’t fully connected with Manic Street Preachers yet, I still feel a little distant from their sound, but I still find it pretty good! - 8/10

Intrigued enough to want to try again so I’m giving a 4

Quite and interesting album. It's easily one of the most political albums I've listened to so far in this list, but the fact that the lyrics range from that topic to Richey Edwards' eating disorders without a drop in quality is a real testament to the musicianship.

The first song Yes is an absolute bop. Listened to it a couple times. Great song, lively, cohesive but also not repetitive.

They shouted at me, and I hadn’t even done anything!

Full of pathos to the point where it actually kinda borders on being emo, but I'm not complaining. I definitely liked this, will probably be coming back to it soon.

I had never heard of this band before, but I think labeling it as Britpop on this site is a misnomer. I found it to be much more punkish and dark in content compared to Britpop. Great instrumentals, but unfortunately, I had a hard time understanding the vocals. I had the lyrics up while I listened so I could follow along. I think this would hit harder had I listened to it contemporaneously with its release. All in all pretty solid listen. The very tragic situation with Richey Edwards overshadows the music.

It is a great record. Uplifting music in a dark and troubled lyrical context. Loved the fresh sound for 90' rock, with awesome vocal performances and songwriting . A keeper.

This album stands out to me because it sounds a bit like Britpop at the time, influenced strongly by contemporary alt, grunge, power pop, and 70s glam. Especially in the expressive vocals. But it's very much it's own thing, with beautiful yet nostalgic melodies that carry both gothic energy and bright optimism. Strong lyrics and a versatile vocalist. Lots of tracks show innovation and style, but it still leaves much to be desired. I see more potential here. Some complaints. Way too long. The last 4 tracks were lame. It's exhausting with how loud and fast-paced it is. Some of the loud tracks don't leave much of an impression, which weighs down the whole record. "Yes" is a strong, catchy starter. Very beautiful and memorable. 5/5 "Ifwhite..." is cool and creative and shows what they can do, albeit a bit messy and anticlimactic. 4/5 "Of Walking Abortion" is a cool gothic track with a memorable energetic chorus. Awesome bridge. 4/5 "She is Suffering" is a strong emotional ballad, very grungey and catchy. A bit long, repetitive, and predictable. 3/5 "Archives of Pain" is very grungey with cool horror effects and a deep bass. A proggy track, it has a lot to offer. 4/5 "Revol" is creative and fun with a lot of personality, giving off bauhaus vibes. Wish there was more to it though. 4/5 "4st 7lb" is an epic track with excellent coordination between all the players. Really adds to that dark atmosphere. Fast-paced and dramatic with a satisfying conclusion. 5/5 "Mausoleum" is a bit forgettable and repetitive but I like the vocals and energy on this one. The loud punk ending was my favorite part. 3/5 "Faster" has a ton to offer. It's bright and catchy, both memorable and accessible. Cool ending. 5/5 "This is Yesterday" is generic 90s power pop. 2/5 "Die in the Summertime" had a sick, almost metal, guitars, but otherwise forgettable. 2/5 "The Intense Humming" is kinda cool, reminds me of The Cure with more indisutrial horror themes you'd hear in grunge. I liked the ending. But it feels incomplete and unsatisfying. Could've definitely gone bigger on this one. 3/5 "P.C.P" is generic pop punk but at least ends with a bang. 2/5 Favorites: Yes, 4st 7lb, Faster

My kind of weird

Im unsure if I knew the name Manic Street Preachers or not. I think I remember hearing them talked about on the radio as a kid but I had no idea what to expect for their sound. It turns out the album veers between this punk and pop punk world in a way that I really appreciate. This was exactly my musical language I loved this album from top to bottom. However in my 2 listens no one song really stood out to me so I'm gonna have to go 4 stars. I am going to keep listening to this one so I hope it moves to 5 to me!

I liked this quite a bit.

4 stars. good rock.

Not bad. Well aware of this band but never actually listened to an album. Good enough songs but nothing really stood out or stuck with me.

This album is great: it has a unique sound, I love the music and the vocals, and the first and last song are really good. The content of the lyrics seems to be great. I love the album art. My only gripe is that it's a bit bloated toward the middle of the album (this may lesson on future listens). All in all a good listen and this will stay in my rotation. 4/10

I like bands who have something to say and Manic Street Preachers certainly do. Some pretty dark lyrics here and they address some pretty harsh issues. Listens: 1 1/2 Fave Track: This Is Yesterday Rating: 4

Un baise-gueule assez inattendu je dois dire.

Cette bande de religieux maniques m'a complétement retourné la gueule

Pleasantly surprised. Some good chunky power pop here. Plenty of snarl and bite to they lyrics. Fascinating albeit tragic back story. Will check this out further. Solid album.

Manic is a good word to describe this band which has a really unique sound. This almost has an angular post hardcore DC feel but is difficult to nail down. As an album, it starts to wear me down a little past the halfway point, but the songs are varied enough and hold plenty of surprises to keep me intrigued and wanting to come back and definitely has some depth. Richey Edwards was an interesting figure for sure.

Easy 4 for me. To be honest, when I saw the cover, the title, and the tracklist, I felt like I might be in for a chore, but that was not the case. The story behind the album is fascinating, especially the fact that the guy who wrote most of the lyrics disappearing shortly after its release. The lyrics are extremely heavy (especially Yes and 4st7lb, two of the best songs on the album overall) and are clearly the product of someone going through a lot of emotional turmoil. They're a strength of the album, but at the same time, it's clear that they were written separately from the music because of all the liberties the singer takes with their pronunciation. But that doesn't really take a lot away from the album since the singing is such a strong instrument on its own. This is odd to say, but the singer sounds kind of like a cross between Gerard Way and Andrew Garfield in Tick Tick Boom, idk. The guitar work is also insane. There are some great songs on this thing, and some that I probably won't listen to much in the future, if at all. Crazy album, 4 stars.

This was good yuh. This guy was pissed at the UK and America

The content section on wikipedia of this album was a ride. Good album. The songs are different throughout where you don’t get bored. Lyrics are really good. And I like the sound. I love Yes, she is suffering, the intense humming of evil, and faster.

Really enjoyed it! Dark, but real.

Heard it a couple times before but it really struck me today just how much energy this thing has, and rock music with high energy always gets a big thumbs up from me. It maybe loses a little of that steam with it being as long as it is, but the quality never really dips and it doesn't feel like it's length, so not that much of a downside. Some really dark lyrics too, jeez.

I could see myself getting into this. Clearly foreshadowing some artists to come in the early 2000s

sounded like muse with elements of punk added for good measure. lyrics critical of politics and religion. overall, a pretty kickass album.

Koin tämän aamulla, aika väsyneenä, muistuu kuitenkin.. Thatcher... Pääni kuitenkin menetti paljon vaikka hyppeli riemukkaassa musiikissa. Kaikki biisthän kuulosti samalta.. eipä kuullosta..

This was a cool find — I had no idea what to expect. I didn't have time to give it one listen in one shot, checked in on it three times and heard to all of it. Here's one that's getting the bump to a 4. More a 3.5 on this listen, but I think with more time I'd really sink in. I liked the guitar work, the songs were interesting, the sound was unique, liked the singer. So yeah, I was digging it.

Dark album, lyrically and musically great.

Rock. Grunge

That was surprisingly great

I’ve seen this album cover on a list before. I understand the story behind it. Pretty catchy music! Overall dig it. Like the vocals a lot. Solid 4/5.

Never heard this one but like it on initial listen. This feels like a album that has a lot to dive into. Not really something you put on to listen with friends over. Very heavy subject material and history surrounding. Definitely putting this on my list to listen to again but that will most likely be when I am by myself.

1. Yes - 4 2. White America- 3 3. Abortion - 5 4. She's suffering- 4 5. Archives of pain - 4 6. Revol - 4 7. 4st 7lb - 5 8. Mausoleum- 4 9. Faster - 4 10. This is yesterday- 4 11. just what you'd expect from uk alt rock / alt punk of the era. vocals overly whingy sometimes decentish lyrics

Solid I guess, had higher expectations because the album cover is so good lpl

Never heard of the group before, but a pleasant surprise. Listened to it in bits and pieces, and really enjoyed what I heard. Will have to do another listen soon.

Was ok

A real masterpiece

Great album!

Images of perfection, suntan and napalm Grenada, Haiti, Poland, Nicaragua Who shall we choose for our morality I'm thinking right now of Hollywood tragedy Big Mac, smack, Phoenix, R., please smile y'all Cuba, Mexico can't cauterize our discipline Your idols speak so much of the abyss Yet your morals only run as deep as the surface Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose - The more things change, the more they stay the same. 4/5

underrated band (the other album is better though)

The Manic Street Preachers have such a great sound. Great voice and great guitars. I also appreciate them having a message in their songs.

This was a great surprise. Loved the sound of most of the songs, the rest is maybe too heavy, but I'll go back to this album many times

I had heard of this band, but never listened. Pleasantly surprised. Pretty good 90s sound.

Fun and insane

90s guitar based garage rock ala strokes.

This was heavier than expected, I liked it Will listen again

I'm torn. This album is so tightly written and the tragedy behind it is compelling, but it's thematically kind of boring. Its just a good album in a genre that was saturated in good albums.

This is really solid - I really like the vocals and the songs have this unique sound.

som legal, tipo um smashing pumpkins com mais energia

Like the M S Preachers but I only knew 1 song. Great album. Dense lyrics, impossible to decipher with Spotify lyrics

Powerful, furious, dissonant, and grand

I really don't recall hearing any tracks off this album before, so it was a nice surprise to listen to it. Mix of alternative/brit pop/rock with some intellect. Overall I really enjoyed this one.

I think first time listening to this band. Not sure what I expected but I liked it. Maybe a little to 90s for some people's tastes.

I liked this a lot. Sounds a lot like other bands I like but it's own thing at the same time. I'll add this one to the rotation, which is great for an album I was unfamilar with!

Decently peppy grunge vibes

Good indie punk rock

A truly great album. Full of hard hitting riffs, extraordinary vocals and a band on the top of their game! The last with Richey, and one of their best for sure. It’s harder hitting than some of their other stuff and anyone looking for another of their classic “This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours” will be a little disappointed by this but I urge you to continue listening. Tis fucking great.

Rock alternativo. Un poco más del ni fu ni fa. Venga, un 4.

I'm not entirely sure why this is special enough to be on this list (maybe it's simply a case of "I wasn't there," or it influenced a lot of music after it), but it was a blast! Which feels a bit weird to say given the depressing subject matter, but it was lots of fun. I loved the lyrics, which were really clever for the most part. There's lots of politics, but I tended to prefer the more personal songs. There was this kind of dramatic self loathing to a lot of the lyrics that you really have balls to put out there. It was all just very intense. However, there were a couple of political songs I really liked. I applaud them for being brave enough to release "PCP." Also, "The Intense Humming of Evil" was amazing, especially how it got all darkly existential in the chorus. Political songs in general are a weird one for me. I'm never sure whether or not I agree with what they're saying, especially if they're older songs and I wasn't there to experience the climate. In the more politically focussed songs, there's an annoying habit of rattling of 30+ names of people I've never heard of, which made it hard for me to understand some of the messages. The second half of the album was better, with a perfect run from tracks 7-13. I actually kind of love a back loaded album. Obviously, a consistent album is better, but I tend to love albums where all my favourites come from the back half. Favourite tracks: The Intense Humming of Evil, PCP, Faster

A band I've heard of, but never listened. It's good. Lyrically this is heavy and reading the wiki it's really dark at times. However its really weirdly almost upbeat, and a great listen.

i had quite low expectations for this album for some reason i was given the impression that it was not that great but i thought it was really cool i overall liked all the songs and there were a couple that i really got on with like yes and faster but the rest of the tracks were still good this sort of rating would usually come out to a 3 for me but i quite enjoyed listening to the album as a whole and the message of it so it definitely bumps it up for me

This is one of those bands I've heard of but never really listened to. The music itself didn't blow me away, but the lyrics and general message made it very interesting. Nice slice of early 90s angry politics. Very dark and angry.

Un dels discos claus dels '90. Li manquen alguns temes més a l'alçada de '4st 7lb' o 'Yes' per arribar a la categoria d'obra mestra, però tot i així un disc a reverenciar i disfrutar

Wow. What an impressive album. There's a lot here. Some songs feel like artsy post-punk, others are grunge, others are alt-rock in the vein of Smashing Pumpkins, others are more straight punk (I have a hunch that a bunch of these songs influenced Green Day -- see: "P.C.P."). There are even moments that remind me a little of Bowie. I'm curious to listen to this again because it's a dense album and it feels like a great one. I'm surprised I've never even heard of the band when they're this good.

Good album, pretty aggressive subject matter through and through. I feel like I liked Yes the most, but this was a long album. I liked the singing voice, I liked the guitar riffs, I liked the fast drumbeats, I liked how most of the songs sounded significantly different.

I'm not sure if this is a 3 or a 4 for me but it was a pretty solid album. Leaning generous and going 4

Right up my alley, it's musically heavy and lyrically dense. Abound with very dark content.

Hard to listen to.

Maybe a 4, maybe a 3. Fun but not super memorable.

This is alright, although a bit repetitive in places with not too many tunes that stand out as being outright bangers. Yes was probably my favourite. Not entirely sure that the sections of auto were warranted at the beginning of tracks in every case - seemed an odd choice, but it was the 90s I suppose and it might be a point of difference perhaps. Not bad at all and I'd certainly listen to it again, although I might not go out of my way to dig this album out.

I'm sure it's sacrilegious to their fans but I prefer the later radio friendly manics. This is still a great album though. 4

Great energetic Brit-pop

This is some great experimental/hard rock. Manic Street Preachers take on some serious topics here like prostitution, white supremacy, anorexia and depression while still giving some amazing guitar playing. This is another great album I wouldnt have found if it wasn't for this list. 4.4/5

Buen disco de rock, con buena voz e instrumentalmente digno. Si destacar ninguna canción especialmente, el conjunto es bueno y gusta

first listen fantastic 90s alt rock

Bra. Lite som ett laid back Dead Kennedys vissa stunder. Kanske en trea, men de får en extra för den försvunne Richey.

Right out of the gate I thought, is someone covering an obscure Cure song, BUT uptempo? All in all I enjoyed the album.

Hasn't got any of their big hit singles on, but a quality album nontheless

I've always heard this band's name but never listened to their music. Pretty unique blend of post-punk, punk, metal, alt rock. Lead singer reminds me of a blend of Freddie Mercury and Billy Corgan maybe? idk but I really enjoyed this album front to back, She is Suffering and Archives of Pain are a couple standouts imo

Didn't listen to this on Christmas Eve, based on the feedback in here, and I'm glad I didn't! Utterly miserable, this - so much pain, from so many different perspectives. That's what keeps this record really interesting right the way through though - normally when you get a misery album it's very 'woe is me' and that gets wearing, but this is much much broader. I don't think I'll be listening to this much again, purely because it's so miserable and angry, but it's really really good. 4/5.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: 4at 7lb, Mausoleum

MSP have been a britpop era blindspot for me for a while. I think I've heard a couple of their last 2000s albums and love the single Your Love Alone Is Not Enough, although that has a lot to do with the involvement of Nina Persson from the Cardigans and is much more of a pop song. So I think this is my first Richey Edwards era album. The songs are graphic and have as just as a violent attitude toward the world as they do directed inward. This album is heavier than I was expecting in sound and it is a really cool mix of post punk and heavy rock. This album is one of my favorite discoveries in this project so far. And I'm always on board with good ol' anti-fascist music. The US mix included on the deluxe releases is actually a bit more dynamic and could have been a hit here if the 1995 release happened, and everything else that happened didn't.

I really liked this, like early pop punk.

banger

Beter dan goed

I only knew some of their hitsongs. This album was not really what I expected because of that. It is way more raw and I liked that.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Mausoleum (8) 2 - She is Suffering (4) 3 - Faster (9)

Love the Brit-pop sound on this album.

Look. I don't care for the Manics, but i actually don't mind this. It won't sway me on them in the long run, but it definitely has softened my stance...kinda

i personally believe that the manic street preachers are one of the greatest bands i’ve ever listened to-HOWEVER: this was not my favourite album but it was still pretty dope

Grows on you till you can’t resist.

Chulisimo

C’est bon et je ne m’en attendsis vraiment pas. Probablement le meilleur album punk/rock? Que j’ai emtemdu dans la liste jusqu’ici. 4.5

Never heard of these guys. I feel like if I had heard this album back in the 90s, I would have absolutely loved it. Happy to hear something new that is up my alley. While clearly sounding like 90s alternative, I hear a bit of foo fighters or queens of the stone age in there, but these guys clearly predated them. Cool stuff. Lead singer's voice sounds like someone... i cant place it though. Although I don't expect to be adding this to my listening rotations, I am happy to have experienced this album. And just when I was ready to quit this album a day thing...

Full album of great tunes, head banging from start to finish.

Pretty good! Think I will listen to some more of them.

Surprisingly fun album. Some dark lyrics and samples mixed in to an upbeat sound.

I'd always written off the MSPs because of those horrible nasally dirges for which I knew them for but this was actually very good.

This was fascinating. NOT at all what I expected. Gonna have another close listen and read all the lyrics. A mix of pop, rock, some kinda prog influence. Very tormented.

Lyrics are a little sixth form poetry and the subject matter is all very grim, but musically this is far and away the best Manics album - still stands up well. Like Pearl Jam but with songs about sex tourists and anorexia.

I don't understand a lot of what is going on but it's got that tinge of industrial that just grabs me. Fave: Revol

Honestly not entirely sure what this was, and I’m not going to pretend I fully understood it. But….. I liked it anyway. I’ve saved the whole thing to my spotify. 4/5

I like the energy of this.

I'd probably consider it a 3.5, rounding up because I was a bit busy when listening to it

This was a surprise and an album/band I’d never heard before. Interesting stories, lyrics — it was great.

Rock alternativo. Un poco más del ni fu ni fa. Venga, un 4.

I need another listen before I decide if it's a bit too smug

Now this is a religion I can get behind.

I am not familiar with MANIC STREET PREACHERS and their third album THE HOLY BIBLE at all. So this is my first time hearing the band. After listening to THE HOLY BIBLE, this album is a difficult one to review. Lyrically, the band has impressive and important points of view to tell their audience, however, for me, musically and vocally the band does not serve the lyrics justice. Musically and vocally, the band is rather generic and uninteresting. They do not have the NINE INCH NAILS ability to get their point across either musically and/or vocally, so the album is a disappointment because the potential (lyric-wise) was there. If the band had better vocals and more varied musicianship, the album could be close to a masterpiece or a “5”. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, with MANIC STREET PREACHERS - THE HOLY BIBLE, their fourth album, EVERYTHING MUST GO (1996) is also listed. Better than the real bible. New wave, industrial, art rock goth. There's a wonderful seething fury about absolutely everything. #whereisrichie?

Sick riffs. Interesting lyrics. One of the coolest albums of the 90s. 8-9/10

This rocks pretty hard

Great discovery for me. Awesome modern punk.

The album artwork is absolutely abhorrent so I can see why it sold poorly. I've been known to judge music by the album cover and that severely lowered my expectations going in. But I have to admit this album is right up my alley. I'm liking the melding of hard rock and post-punk sounds with the alt rock sensibilities. The intensity of the vocals pairs exceptionally well with the rawness of the music. There's something reminiscent of Freddie Mercury in the vocal tone, am I the only one hearing that? I like.

Great album

Really enjoyed the punk vibes from this album. I'm going to come back to these guys for sure!

I liked it! Smashing Pumpkins vibes. Very enjoyable

I enjoyed the lyrical themes of this album quite a bit. It’s a very interesting slice of the post Thatcher/Reagan era told from the perspective of people who are still with the aftermath. Manic Street Preachers are the leaders of the Welsh music movement in the 90s and are a very important band. The music itself is brooding, stark and industrial at times, and punchy.

Never heard of Manic Street Preachers before. Now that this has introduced me to them, I'll check out the rest of their discography.

The album cover is a good indication that a fucked up adventure is about to start. This album defines the term"angst filled Fothermucker". The music isn't that good but it's not supposed to be and doesn't need to be. It's the canvas; the lyrics are the art. So what about the lyrics? They certainly draw out emotions. It takes me from feeling angry at the same people he is, to feeling bad for society and the folks who are down and out. But mostly,  I feel sad for him. There's no way someone can just write this unless they're in a terrible place. RIP

Dark lyrics but somehow it manages to be extremely enjoyable.

Amazing album

Niet mijn favoriete album van hun, beetje te gejaagd, maar het blijft lekker om ze te horen.

The compositions here are obviously impressive this thing could’ve cut two whole songs though

When everyone else in the 90s were doing britpop (this was released the same day as definitely maybe) the Manics relocated to Cardiff to make one of the decade’s most remarkable and outlying rock records. I get this won’t be for everyone but I will always love it and have enjoyed blasting it out from the kitchen this morning whilst Humby is hungover 😂. The Holy Bible is full of anguish, unshrinking and unromantic in its abyss-edge study of death, fascism, self-harm, and man’s capacity for atrocity. Maybe you could argue it’s a couple of tracks too long but for me we’re hearing one of the era’s most underrated bands with their best record. 4/5

Really cool and political, I can see its influences in a lot of things now

Rock is good and stuff

Solid listen. Never heard before

Noice!

Nice 90s grunge/anxiety. Die in the summer time, was probably my favorite. Need to listen to more of MSP!

Cool punk band.

quite a surprise, incredible lyrics

new discovery

"Second wind" seems unfair and "hits its stride" is trite, but something happens at and after She Is Suffering. Not that energy is missing before that song, but I hear some kind of change, apparently nothing that I can describe but which certainly affects my ears. The skits give the project a kind of rap feel, but in spirit and not imitation. A shining example of music from across the pond, if not particularly boundary-pushing. I do find myself loving the edgiest-titled cuts. That seems like a sign that this could have been a taste determinant if I heard it younger.

Visceral and angry....Yet melancholic and melodic, the manics doing what they do best

Man, I was excited for this one. It’s supposed to be this landmark record, but it sounds like dozens of other punk and britpop albums I’ve heard.

Mye fengende og bra, men også endel ujevnt. Sterk 3'er
