Review - everyone's favourite Northern Irish covid-denier at the top of his game. Putting how much of a mess the man is on a political/scientific basis, art not artist etc etc... this is an absurdly great album. His voice is completely unique, there's no one out there who sounds like Van Morrison. His songwriting is on another level, his lyricism. The way he sings "he lived all alone in his own little home" in And It Stoned Me is just perfect. His lyrics are so evocative, he just has a way of conjuring feelings through his words and the vibe of the music. In Into the Mystic, you can kind of parse the first two lines in different ways depending on how you read it, that's smart as fuck. And that foghorn sound is the perfect device for getting the mood across. Side note - I had to find out how they made the foghorn noise. I'd always guessed it was a kind of echoey cello. Turns out it's two saxophones being played through a Leslie speaker, which is a speaker over a rotating drum usually used for electric organs. Multiple times while doing this list I've heard something really cool in an album, looked up how they did it and the answer is "they played something other than an electric organ through a Leslie speaker") I'm being absolutely spoiled with great albums the last few weeks. This is an all timer. Loved it Score - 9.5/10 Need to listen? YES

It was a fine album. Extra star for Into the Mystic which is one of the best songs.

Already much better than "Astral Weeks" in my humble opinion. Just more cohesive and effective, with the blend of R&B/soul with jazz and folk all throughout. "Into the Mystic" is timeless, but most of the rest of the tracks stand out on their own too. Van Morrison is quite the poet even if he doesn't mean to be. Also, can't not think of The Sopranos anytime I hear "Glad Tidings".

My dad had this album and we listened to a ton as kids. Just a classic in every sense of the word. It is a listen you can just have on replay all day. 9/10 Top song... Moondance

I don’t really even like Van Morrison’s hits, and this ain’t it. It feels sonically thin, and he always seems like he should be singing a different genre.

The more I hear his stuff, the more I like it. This is proper good — warm, soulful, jazzy and a great listen. Am I softening up to folkier stuff? Or is Van Morrison just getting good at sneaking it past me?

This must be the third or fourth Van Morrison album to appear on this list, and it’s the best one I’ve heard so far. It pairs perfectly with a cold morning and a mug of coffee. 4 stars.

This is a pretty nice album. It feels ideal for putting on late at night, with that laid-back blend of soft rock, jazz, and soul running through the whole thing. There’s plenty of saxophone, warm instrumentation, and an easygoing atmosphere that makes it really pleasant to just settle into. None of the tracks completely blew me away, but what impressed me was how consistently the album kept me engaged. Every time I started thinking I might check out, some new melody, hook, or little stylistic change would pull me right back in. It never really overstays its welcome either. At around 38 minutes, it’s a great length for this kind of mellow album. And yeah, Van Morrison is definitely much more than just Brown Eyed Girl. Moondance really feels like the album where that signature Van Morrison sound comes fully into focus. It may not have completely knocked me out, but it’s smooth, inviting, and very easy to spend some time with. 3.6/5

I think the only Van Morrison song I knew going into this was "Brown Eyed Girl", which is fine but not my favorite so I had pretty low expectations, and this was slightly better than I was expecting? I still would say it's not my thing, but "Moondance" and "Into The Mystic" were decent!

Maybe I’m giving too low today but this is overall a great album. 4.5

Moondance (the track) is really good but other than that Moondance (the album) is pretty forgettable and honestly a little annoying to listen to. For me it felt like it couldn’t really decide on an identity so it just tried and failed to be a lot of things

I think this might not have been the best time to listen to this album, as there's too much chaos around me. And because of that I found it kind of boring. Not bad, just boring. Might need to revisit this album, as I feel the current rating might be a little unfair.

C'était fort jovial ! J'ai surtout beaucoup aimé les cuivres qu'on a régulièrement tout au long de l'album. C'est un ajout précieux qui enrichit le folk de Van Morrison (et pas Donovan, comme je l'ai lu à l'origine). C'est pas forcément mon genre de prédilection, donc j'ai pas grand-chose à dire de plus, mais c'était une écoute très agréable ! Bon, par contre, le gars a l'air d'être un sale con. Apparemment, il traite ses musiciens comme de la merde, des histoires de harcèlement sexuel ou un truc approchant, des conspirations autour du COVID... Et ma politique, dans ces cas-là, ça sera une étoile en moins, au minimum.

Excited to listen to more of Van than just brown eyed girl (although I love that track it is admittedly overplayed). The double bass that steps us through the title track paints an image of slinky dresses, cocktails and cigars in a dimly lit bar. The sweet and smooth Crazy Love describes ‘her’ in such a gently romantic way. I love the confidence yet omission of ego in the way he writes and sings. The perfect Saturday morning album, opening the curtains and slowly dancing with my coffee. Give me sunny days and Van Morrison forever, rock my gypsy soul. Would I buy this record if I saw it in the $5 bargain bin - surprised I haven’t already

A fun listen with a few clear standouts. Moondance, Crazy Love and Into the Mystic are the clear standouts. The rest is solid enough though and I'll try to revisit it when I can.

Van Morrison ist zwar mittlerweile ein scheiß Corona-Leugner. Das soll aber nicht davon ablenken, dass diese Platte hier verdammt großartig ist. Er schafft hier einen guten Mix aus klassischem Folk ergänzt um Einflüsse aus Jazz, Gospel und R&B. Obwohl die Songs selbst recht unaufdringlich sind, gehen sie ziemlich gut ins Ohr. "Moondance" und "Into the Mystic" kannte ich vorher schon, aber hier liefern alle Tracks auf einem dermaßen hohen Niveau ab, dass man dafür schon die Höchstwertung zücken kann.

Das Album ist ganz nett, gibt aber einen Stern Abzug für Van Morrison als Person, der ja zumindest heute einen gewaltigen Aluhut trägt.

To date, the only Van Morrison song I've ever fallen in love with is Sweet Thing, which isn't on Moondance. I am honestly not really into this. I like lots of folk music and a solid share of jazz, but I just don't really like Van Morrison's take on either/both here. I don't love his songs, I don't love his lyrics, I just dunno, I don't really relate to, or find much interest or excitement in his music. And honestly, this isn't even really considering that he's kind of a piece of shit, I just don't really like the man's music. The only real, general exception is admittedly a weird one. I *love* his delivery. The way words just tumble expressionistically out of his mouth is just wonderful. But it is definitely not enough to save this for me. I don't have a lot to say. Moondance just does, otherwise, very little for me.

"Stoned me just like jelly roll"? Huh? I've always hated Van Morrison's voice. He sounds like an obese man struggling to sing. And half of the time he sounds like he's making up the lyrics as he goes. Fuckin' Moondance sounds like he's drunk in addition to being obese and hard of breathing because of his physical condition. And the notes he "hits" are fucked up, like he's struggling to hit a certain register 'cause he's singing out of his range. Crazy Love is okay 'cause he's keeping it down. Then he comes farting back with Caravan and here we go again with this slapped together make-it-up-as-you-go-sounding shit with the fat man singing out of range, not to mention he's probably drunk. I'll pass. Since everyone acts like they like shit so much, y'all can deal with it. I'm out.

Sometimes this list is just a little too obvious. This is a great album but you could go a bit more adventurous with Veedon Fleece, Saint Dominic's Preview or even Common One. I see the big live album is on here too, which is great, but the same point goes double. However, this is definitely among the best of his more commercial style, albeit very front loaded.

Pre Notes: I think I've heard the name Van Morrison somewhere before? The album cover/his face is unfamiliar to me, but I swear I've heard him somewhere before. I think he sings folk? I guess I'll find out shortly. Notable Tracks: Moondance - Might be the song I've heard before? Sounds very familiar, I also quite like it. Probably my favorite. Everyone - I don't know how I feel about this one, opinion on it spins between loving it and hating it. It's got great energy, but the sound bounces around from being enjoyable to a little bit cheesy. Glad Tidings - Melody and tempo reminds me of "Brown Eyed Girl" by Jimmy Buffet. That's all. Post Listen: Very solid album, I enjoyed the mix of classic rock and jazz, with a sprinkle of folk and country in there. Personally I think the album's at it's best when it really leans into the Jazz angle. His ensemble plays to their strengths, specifically the piano stood out to me. Van's voice is also pretty good. If I heard this album live I feel like it'd have made me into a life-long Morrison fan. The whole album has this relaxing, warm feel to it, like I'm back in my hometown sipping on a beer on a temperate day. Each song also feels unique, and has catchy bridges that are easy to pick up on and enjoy. My only gripe is a few songs go on for a bit too long, and there's a few too many slow songs for my taste. Overall though, good start to September. Feels a fitting album for the start of the Fall. 4/5

Started off super strong then declined pretty sharply. Not really as big a fan anymore. Now it's just kinda every other country album. Nothing really special. Isn't this guy Irish? Spiderman reference? Right right. Favourite: Moondance Least favourite: Caravan

Moondance stands up to repeated listening well, as I know from my own experience. While tales of Mr. Morrison himself give me doubts about him as a companion, I’ve taken his album around the world and it’s never let me down.

I think I just didn’t know who Van Morrison was before this, like I expected a different style (I was definitely thinking of Jim Morrison, shamefully). I like this quite a lot! Shame about his recent anti-science views.

Van the man. Is it a little silly at times? Yes. But the power of Van is to make that silly a little bit of magic. He has some soul and he makes it work. Something about Moondance I can’t escape.

I thought Van Morrison was a heavy metal band or something. Guess I got mixed up with Van Halen. Anyway this is pretty good.

I found this calming and soothing. It feels like a green tea on a balcony at sunset. The smooth, relaxing melodies match my mood at the time of listening so well. However, the tracks are a little too simplistic. Overall, it is definitely lovely but, much like a green tea, does not have much flavour.

Now this was a pleasant surprise! Before being given this album, I knew 3 things about Van Morrison: 1) he was from Northern Ireland, 2) he had a song called "Brown Eyed Girl," and 3) he's a notorious prick. They say there are 2 kinds of people: those who like Van Morrison, and those who've met him. I'm not sure where I stand on that, but what I do know for certain is that this album is an absolute gem. From the word "go," Moondance lays down its sonic palette and sticks with it throughout its 38 minutes. This is a smooth, mellow album, but it doesn't mean it isn't a fiery and energetic romp through love, passion, spirituality and mysticism. This is, in my opinion, the greatest summation of Morrison's vast body of work, balancing both the stream-of-consciousness magical ramblings with the earthy blues-jazz-soul-rock fusion that forms what the singer himself has titled "Celtic soul." It's sort of hard to describe outside of combining the 4 main influences, but you'll know it when you hear it. The big songs that stood out to me were the title track and "Into the Mystic." I imagine this isn't particularly surprising given their iconic status, but this is one case of the singer's most canonized songs also being their best. "Moondance" has a slinking jazz shuffle carried by the walking bass, which allows Morrison to seamlessly riff and shout all over the chorus to make one of the most powerful belt-out moments in the folk rock canon (if you can sing along to it, anyway.) Meanwhile, "Into the Mysic" uses seafaring imagery to pose questions about life, love and the pursuit of something greater than onself, using only 2 verses and less than 4 minutes of runtime. Truly a gargantuan feat to ponder such massive questions within such a small frame. Other big ones are "Caravan," whose la-la-la chorus I would normally dismiss, but one only needs to watch Morrison's performance of it in The Last Waltz to truly understand how transcendent la-la-las can be. The B-side isn't quite as good as the A-side and mostly sticks to a milder, mid-tempo interpretation of the A-side's lightning-in-a-bottle energy, but the 2 highlights there are the opener and closer, "Come Running," a warm tribute to the early R&B progenitors, and the closer "Glad Tidings," an upbeat jaunt that uses a variety of disparate metaphors for self-reflection. That latter song is probably most famous for its use in the Sopranos; that's where I heard it first, and now I can finally assign it to somebody. At first, I didn't think much of this album and I mostly assigned into the "respectable folk from the Woodstock-adjacent crowd" box. But there was just something so...magnetic that drew me into this album again and again, which is something I think can be ascribed to Van Morrison's career as a whole. While seemingly bog-standard in its execution, the magnetic, almost mythical presence of something bigger than the music keeps people drawn in. It's no wonder Van has been "the Man" for the past 60 plus years, because there's something truly intangible and timeless to his work that you can't find much of anywhere else. Second Van Morrison, though is technically my first. I assembled a pre-written review for "It's Too Late to Stop Now" a couple of months back simply because that album was very long. It was an interesting listen. I didn't care much for the actual music, though I certainly appreciated the spectacle. Rather than relying on digital effects and other forms of concert trickery to produce an authentic studio sound, Morrison went all in on a meticulous, clean, measured analogue approach, which was primarily accomplished through a highly adept backing band. I thought that album earned its spot on the list, and hopefully this one will as well. Here goes. Hmm. This boomery music just isn't my speed, though I won't deny that it isn't snazzy. The rhythmic brass numbers that persist across this album are generally engaging, though there's nothing that really hooks me. The same can be said about Morrison as a performer. He's adept and well-suited to this style of music, though I just find him tepid as a result of my own musical tastes. If there's a silver lining, it's that the songwriting is generally adept and features many competent vocal hooks around the choruses. I also appreicate the self-contained runtime as well. All in all, I didn't mind dipping into this album for a few, though I doubt I will be returning. Book time. Morrison's breakthrough release in America. The lineup of musicians that Morrison assembled for this album are among his most esteemed collaborators, namely John Platania, Jack Schroer and Jeff Labes. This album is larger and more grandiose in its sound than his previous outings, notably adding Morrison's now-distinctive horn sections to his musical repertoire. In the book's words: "The first side of the LP is almost perfect." Wikipedia verifies that this was a pivotal release in Morrison's career, was massively successful and is widely considered to be one of the best albums ever. The critic response was glowing, and the album has received enduring acclaim in the years following release. The album only charted in six countries, though it performed well in all of them. The album notably peaked at No. 32 in the UK, No. 29 in America, No. 20 in Australia and No. 9 in the Netherlands. Yeah. All signs point to this being a worthwhile pick, and I think two list albums and a live album is about right for an artist of Morrison's standing. I cosign this inclusion.

This might upgrade to a 4 with additional listens, but I guess part of the reason it gets is 3 is that I am not that keen on doing additional listens. If this album was on while I was cooking or something it would be pleasant, but I am not sure that I'd ever choose to put it on. I don't think I'd pick it up at the record store.

Pure warmth. Designed to release soothing chemicals in your brain. Beautifully produced with Van's voice suitably high in the mix. Side 1 is almost comically good, every song is a smash hit. Side 2 ain't too bad neither. Zero sharp edges but still feels vital due to Van's vocal prowess. He sounds both in complete control and liable to fly off the rails at any moment. The band always sounds intimate despite having a full horn section and multiple backup singers, which is a testament to the vision he employs as a producer and arranger.

This is the essential Van Morrison album and a longtime favorite of mine! Love the melodies and sweet sentimentality of this album and I think it holds up well. (although, recent remixes of 'Into the Mystic' added an annoying tambourine part that I can't un-hear and I think it detracts from the music)

Some kind of country. With brass too though? Bit bluesy. Honestly without vocals the opening track sounds like something the Rolling Stones would have made. Can you call this blue-eyed soul? Moondance is more jazzy, sounds like a Sinatra cover - but I like it Crazy Love reminds me of We Found Love Right Where We Were by Ed Sheeran?? Moondance by Van Morrison is a great album and one I've always enjoyed, so I was very pleased to see it come up on the challenge today. In fact, I enjoyed listening to it so much that I ended up playing it three times. There are so many great songs on this album. It's warm, soulful and incredibly easy to listen to, with a brilliant mixture of folk, jazz, soul and blues running throughout. Van Morrison's voice sounds fantastic, but it's the musicianship that really stands out for me. The piano, horns and guitar give the whole album such a rich and relaxed sound. What I particularly like about Moondance is how effortless it feels. There are some genuinely beautiful moments, but it never feels overly serious or difficult. It's just a collection of brilliantly written songs that flow together perfectly. You can have it playing in the background and enjoy it, but there is also enough going on musically and lyrically to reward actually sitting down and properly listening. Three listens today and I still wasn't bored of it. That probably tells you everything you need to know. A fantastic album that has aged incredibly well. Favourite tracks: There are several great tracks here. "Caravan" is lovely, "Into the Mystic" is absolutely beautiful, and "And It Stoned Me" is a brilliant way to open the album. Least favourite tracks: There isn't a weak song here. Everything on the album is worth a listen and earns its place. Album artwork: A classic Van Morrison album cover. Simple, understated and instantly recognisable.

Earlier in the project, Astral Weeks from 1968 grated on me, but 1970’s Moondance had me grooving’ along. Did VM change in two years, or did I change in two months?

Liked sooo much

The first five tracks are a murderer's row — "And It Stoned Me," "Moondance," "Crazy Love," "Caravan," and "Into the Mystic" back to back, five different emotional registers, all working completely. That opening sequence alone makes the case for the five before the record has even reached its halfway point. When a studio album opens with that kind of sustained quality it's not luck; it's a musician operating at the absolute peak of his powers with a band fully committed to the same vision. The synthesis is the achievement — jazz, soul, R&B, Celtic folk, and gospel flowing together with a naturalness that makes the combination feel inevitable rather than calculated. The horn arrangements are precise and warm, serving the songs rather than decorating them. The rhythm section swings in ways that connect directly to the Basie and Masekela listens — ensemble playing where every instrument finds exactly the right amount of space and stays there. The flute on the title track gives it a lightness that shouldn't work and is completely essential. It's Too Late to Stop Now already earned a five in this project — the live record that caught this same voice and vision in a room with a band at full commitment. Moondance is the studio counterpart, tighter and more produced but drawing from the same well. Around 1970 Van Morrison was operating at a level that very few artists in any genre have matched before or since, and this record sits at the center of that run. A five without qualms, delivered by the first five tracks and confirmed by everything that followed.

Lovely. Get's a bit repetitive towards the end but overall just solid nostalgic music.

It’s hard not to hear Van Morrison as the kind of guy to take himself too seriously. When he leans into the sort of country-fried rock in songs like Caravan, he’s at his best. Though, Crazy Love was fairly douchey. His inclusion of jazz and blues elements, particularly in the horn sections of some songs, helps his music shines. His voice works when it’s forceful and pained. The titular song, Moondance, is absolutely his best from this album, but he displays some incredible vocals on other tracks throughout. He’s got a somewhat Fogerty quality, and, as a fan of CCR, I dig it. The piano and bass on most tracks were delightful and helped to round out everything. The drums were present, but felt under utilized largely. The guitar was decent, but, again, not as well represented as I would have liked. Ultimately, it was his vocals that carried each track with little room for the instruments to take center stage and lead the way. Also, I just want to note that Glad Tidings has the same chord progression for both the guitar and bass of Brown Eyed Girl. It irks me when singers/bands do that. You don’t have to change everything, but at least TRY to disguise it.

Inoffensive and boomerific …. Bits of R&B and jazz conveniently separated from all the politics of the era. So dull

Overall, not a bad album. I know that it's quite old and it was quite nice at the time, but nowadays it is a slight bit outdated. I am not saying that it is properly outdated like some other albums that I've heard, because I enjoyed having this album playing in the background, but I feel like I have been stimulated a lot more lately by more exciting music, so although this is chill, I am a bit numb to getting excited.

I really wanted to give this album a 1, the same way I gave Kanye and Clapton 1's. I ... just can't do it - this is too goddamn good, it steamrolls criticism. It's Chinatown or Annie Hall or Thriller or any other number of great works created by complete assholes. This is one of those albums you can listen to on repeat all day and not get sick of - there's nothing that's even a 4. I guess my favorite is Into the Mystic (because how can it not be?) but you could make a case for at least 3 others. I had forgotten how great Crazy Love and Caravan were in particular. Best Use of Van Morrison Songs in Movies/Premiere TV (not including Caravan in Last Waltz): 4. Domino (Clean and Sober) 3. Moondance (American Werewolf in London) 2. Everyone (Royal Tennenbaums) 1. Glad Tidings (Sopranos) They all rule, though. I'm thinking of creating a sub-list of stealth albums that are probably not in the running for greatest of all time, but are secretly in the next tier. Off the top of my head, this and The Cars are on that list. Probably My Aim is True will be too, but I haven't gotten that yet.

Pretty irish

Yet again another album that didn't trigger any memories. It wasn't boring but it never succeded in catching my attention.

Actually like a few songs off this album, not as much as I thought I would but some for nostalgia purposes. Not really up there for me, but I am intrigued to give this album a proper listen in future. Maybe it was timing for me this time.

When I was 16, I watched a lot of my heroes fall. It was 2014, and I was heavily invested in the work of the British YouTube community. I'd gone to a few meet and greets, and learned how to play the ukulele because of Charlotte McDonnell. This was the place where I figured out that you didn't have to wait for someone to let you make things - you could just make them. There were so many musicians and creators that I looked up to, and by the end of 2014, they were facing consequences for their reprehensible actions. ────────────────── Moondance is the third album by Van Morrison. Van Morrison, up until 2020, had been considered one of the all time greats of popular music. Whether it was from his time in Them, to Brown Eyed Girl during the Summer of Love, and the rediscovery and reappraisal of Astral Weeks, Van Morrison has inspired millions of first dances at weddings and gotten thousands of Northern Irish kids to pick up the guitar. By all accounts, a nice fellow and a wonderfully talented songwriter. His years of goodwill had quickly been dashed by his Covid denialism in 2020, and his rallying against the lockdowns. ────────────────── While these two things aren't closely comparable, it's strange to watch people you respect and look up to become pariahs. This is usually for good reason, but it still hurts. I'm so grateful and proud of those women for standing up and speaking out against their abusers, because where I stand now, I would never want to support someone like that. But it hurts to watch someone you admire to be revealed to be a serial abuser. What does that say about you that you didn't know? Are you a fan? Did your money support them in doing that? The answer is no, they would have hurt someone regardless. And we do not know what the people on our screens do when the camera is off. ────────────────── Moondance is a nice album, and I want to talk about it objectively. It's a nice and sweet album. The title track is a song I hold very dearly, after my brother showed it to me around 15 years ago. There's also some fantastic moments on Caravan and Everyone. They're beautifully written songs, and the instrumental backing is truly joyful. It's a wonderful piece of work. Van Morrison's legend status would have probably been cemented if he'd made this album and nothing else. I like this album a lot, but at the back of my mind - there's that thought that maybe I shouldn't be listening to music by such a weirdo. ────────────────── Charlotte McDonnell is doing really well. I'm really, truly happy for her.

First listen. Moondance is a nostalgia trip. I thought the first few songs were alright. I really like Into the Mystic. The rest of the album felt like it was in the same key. Van Morrison’s vocals are great and the performance on the record is wonderful. I’m just not a big fan of the latter half of the album.

After the commercial failure of Astral Weeks, Van Morrison retreated to a mountaintop in the Catskills with his wife, moved in next door to Bob Dylan, and wrote Moondance in the woods while allegedly finding himself. The album cover was carefully framed by photographer Elliot Landy to hide a large pimple on Morrison's forehead. This is the most relatable thing Van Morrison has ever done and it has been downhill personally ever since. He recorded the entire album without musical charts, working purely from basic song structures in his head and relying on band spontaneity to fill in the rest. Moondance the song was not released as a single until 1977, seven years after the album came out, yet became one of his signature songs through sheer radio saturation alone. Into the Mystic was written in a single burst of inspiration and is genuinely one of the most beautiful things he ever recorded. Caravan is the third classic on an album that runs out of classics approximately halfway through and then repeats the same jazzy blue eyed soul groove with diminishing returns until everyone politely agrees it is over. In 2020, Van Morrison released protest songs calling COVID lockdowns fascist, performed at anti-lockdown rallies, and collaborated with Eric Clapton, our series benchmark for problematic artist behavior, on one of these songs. Two legends, one bad idea, zero self awareness. The Clapton Coefficient applies and it applies firmly. The 24 year old who made this album in a Catskills cabin deserved better than the 75 year old he became. Unfortunately they share a discography and a star rating. 2 out of 5. One star for Moondance and Into the Mystic, which are timeless and blameless. One star for hiding the pimple, which showed rare good judgment. The remaining three stars are on a mountaintop in the Catskills, wondering where it all went wrong.

Didn’t catch it

For as many folk-rock singer-songwriter albums as I’ve already had to listen to, I think there is a certain charm and magic that just Van Morrison has which really shines through on this, especially in the front half. The songs aren’t complicated, but they are remarkably rich and he brings a beautiful tone in his voice getting past lyrics (nice but simple) and into just using his voice as another element of the music. It can run together a bit by the end especially with the front half having all the all-timers, but small quibbles when the overall tone is so strong.

A near perfect album, the only song I can’t get along with is Everyone but then Glad Tiddings hits and makes the world right again. 4.7

This album feels like family. I wouldn't listen to this with strangers, only friends and family. Just like you would not watch Christmas movie with someone from work. I have it on vinyl and it gets a lot of spins. The A side is simply legendary.

Really 'nice' album. Couple of outstanding tracks. Am I being overly cynical if it feels like he tried to make 'Astral Weeks' more accessible? Maybe that's not a problem anyway. A little bit sickly sweet in places, but a great album.

I was aware of quite a few songs from this record from the radio and other media over the years, but had never payed it much attention, the mixing is to DIE for and the arrangements are gorgeous. The second half has a significant fall off in quality. 4 stars Ever since the first time I heard the song “Moondance” I loved it. The record isn’t perfect and some of the last songs are just fine, but it’s a lovely album.

I owned this CD at one point and while I never need to hear it again, it's somehow burned in my brain, and I think there is something to be said for that.

Never liked Van Morrison. Never will. It's easier for me to dismiss this album now that I've confirmed that he's a dick.

My second listen through Moondance for this project reinforced what I learned the first time: I'm kinda into this. "And It Stoned Me," "Crazy Love," "Caravan," "Into the Mystic," "Everyone," and "Glad Tidings" are all standouts for me, and I love the horns across the album. Van Morrison himself is a jag bag, but this album is great.

I do prefer Astral Weeks but this is right up there. One of the best voices ever, fantastic arrangements, and I can never listen to Caravan without seeing his failed attempts at high kicks. I find this album to be.... most satisfactory.

The first song sucks, but the rest are kinda nice. On of the better more folky songs on this list.

First song made me think this was going to be terribly boring. The second song was however quite a bit better already. After that it did get a little stale but it remained decent all throughout the album. Not my thing but not bad music, pretty original and musical.

Echt een eind jaren 60, 70 sound. Iconisch in haar tijd, maar niet meer van deze tijd? Soms heb je van die albums of artiesten die ook 50 jaar later nog steeds mee kunnen, ze voelen niet verouderd. Dit album heeft dat voor mij niet, dit is een zoetsappig romantisch plaatje. Zonder rauwe randjes of sprankel. Luistert gewoon prima weg, misschien wel nice als je aan de heroine zou zitten. Al heb ik dat nooit gedaan en zou ik dat ook niet aanraden. Tenzij iemand jouw ergste vijand is, dan is zo’n opium misschien wel een goede aanrader…?

Wat een geweldig album! Sprankelend. Ik kende deze nog niet. Wat zonde. Ik had er heel vaak naar geluisterd. Goede bas, gitaar, piano. Wat zullen ze een plezier hebben gehad bij het opnemen.

Ik vind het wel een leuk album. Ook best goed. Hele goede baslijntjes. Maar niet heel spannend.

Van Morrison, echt zon grote naam die je vaker hebt gehoord maar nooit echt de muziek van hebt beseft. Af en toe komt er een nummer voorbij waarbij je denkt: oja, dat is van hem dus, oke. Het album heeft me een beetje koud gelaten, tis vrij positief, romantisch maar het mist voor mij een beetje wat scherpe randjes.

There's infinite original soul artists that made songs like this. 4) **** Now we back in the wilderness. I'm glad the piano is back. I can get behind these more folky arrangements. The yellow Tellytubby must be his favourite. The rest is nice. 5) ** Please go back on the caravan. Meh. Nothing wrong with this. 6) ** More white boy soul. Dig the bongos! 7) ** YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWW. Sax solo to save the track. I can't shake the feeling he's impersonating/rehashing the artists of his youth. Organ lifts it too. Bloody love an organ. 8. I forgot. 9. Was that a harpsichord? Actual 5* just for inclusion of the most whimsy instrument (bar maybe the hurdy hurdy). 10. * What came first, this or brown eyed girl? It slips into the same guitar lick and has the La's. Verdict: Easy listening, fine in the background. A couple of tracks I liked, several I couldn't care for and a couple I'd avoid. I really don't like his white boy soul tracks. The folky/piano driven numbers have a good energy for the most part and some fun instrumentals including flute, organ and possibly a harpsichord? Probably won't return. ** -------------- * I know Jethro Tull isn't a person. Don't worry.

Great album. Into the Mystic is a highlight for me. Such a beautiful song sung so well.

Es como escuchar The Strokes. Es decir, son todas iguales, solo que esto es folk/jazz/blues (con lo malo del folk). Están bien de fondo, fácil de escuchar, ninguna me disgusta... Pero ninguna me dice nada especial y pasan desapercibidas, no me atrapa. Todas me gustarían en un bar con una cerveza en la mano o incluso como música en directo, siempre y cuando el plan sea que la música "está de fondo". Dicho eso, no hay nada que me haya hecho saltar una canción o como para decir "¡quita eso anda!". Eso ya es un gran plus. ⭐⭐⭐ Mención especial: Moondance

I don't think I'd ever heard Van Morrison before, but I felt like I had. I had to look it up, and that's because I've heard counting crows. The slow jazzy piano playing ballads don't really feel like my thing, but I enjoyed it well enough.

I find this to be really very solid, it blends together a little bit maybe and even though there are undeniable classics here the sound is almost a bit too much for me in places, still a solid 6-7/10 tho

this might be the least jazz, jazz album on the list. yes it really is jazz but is it really? moondance is def the best track on this list of songs, but a lot of it i felt like i wanted more, even when there is a lot of stuff going on in the tracks. Morrison is a very great songwriter tho.

Van Morrison, you came from the absolute rubbish Astral Weeks and produced something worthy of this list. It's such a nice jazz-adjacent album that was perfect for the walk that I listened to it on. However, after the brilliance of Moondance (what a great song), it loses its momentum and turns into decent album tracks that work well together, but aren't particularly special. Great album, needs something more to push it up a score.

I really don’t like Van Morrison. His vocal delivery is awful, with the weird wailing thing he does before delivering a note (just because it works for Dylan, doesn’t mean you need to do it as well…). The songs are so beige… I can imagine the stage setup for the live performance with a least four, preferably bearded, percussionists with a range of shakers and hand drums, adding absolutely nothing to the songs because they are soooo beige. A gilded turd.

The same criticism levied at Van Morrison after listening to Astral sweeps stands. His voice does not endear me to the music and tends to bellow each line out which I’m not fond of at all. Moondance is the same but with jazzier additions made to it - only it’s the bad kind of musak that jazz gets a bad rap for.

You can have too much Van Morrison in your life. In fact it's quite easy to hit that limit. I'll be fair to say I agree it's an album for the 1001 list, but I just don't like it, and I haven't liked them over the past 30 years where I've tried to see what the fuss is about. personal review ignore inconsistent grammar / restating of points / poor narrative. It's starting off really strong with "And It Stoned Me", great guitar tone and solo near the end of the song, singing is overall unimpressive technically but emotional. CLASSIC 70s vocals. Kinda hate that he's anti lockdown and republican but he's also really old. Second song "Moondance" is incredibly jazzy. Not sure if his vocals suit a track like this quite as much. Still pretty good. I like the woodwinds. How did he do that at the end of the song when he said "la la la" white boys don't do that anymore. He's trying to be a black woman. Crazy Love confirms this. Very soft, feminine vocals. I'm pretty sure the backing track is black women? Weird comment I know, but it is a little jarring for the album cover. Apparently 'Brown-Eyed Girl' was originally called brown skinned girl. I'm pretty uneducated on this but it seems like he's appreciating rather than appropriating. "Switch on your electric light" is a pretty funny lyric because apparently in 1970 they had to clarify. Caravan is a very enjoyable track. Banger. Could see me playing this for a Instagram story while golfing or cruising around the suburbs. A little yacht-y (see what I did there? I didn't). The foghorn on 'Into the Mystic' is pretty great. "I wanna rock your gypsy soul", contrasts that by being a pretty weird line. A little fetishizing and reminds me of what we read about in comp lit 114. Although its much past that time the remnants are still there. It's pretty gross. Maybe I'm too woke. People seem to really love this song but it's not for me. "Come Running" did not really grab my attention, will relisten. Sax solo on "These Dreams of You" rules. It sounds a bit like the saxophones are layered for harmonies but I think that there's only one sax player in the band? Were they mixing? I was not aware. This album almost feels after its time. "I've be used bruised and so confused" Is the type of low hanging fruit line that you only see on older records and I'm going to go against the grain and say that lines like this objectively suck. Art takes creativity. Art takes cohesion. The layered backing tracks on Morrison's records juxtapose his simple vocals. "My heart is fill // I've got the will // And I don't really feel so mean" He's bringing me back in. Maybe the contrast between his lyrics and the backing track does him a service?. "Brand New Day" is probably the most interesting track to me so far on the record. The clavichord on "Everyone" really comes out of nowhere. This is Ren Faire music if I've ever heard it. Cool Ren Faire music. Saying 'everyone' like 9 times is not a chorus Van Morrison! Why were people so bad at choruses back in the 60s-70s? It makes me actually mad because their verse writing is arguably better than it is today. But in modern music which has almost done away with the verse a song lacking a strong chorus just sounds so forgettable. His vocal Timbre might be the best part of his music. That isn't to say that the backing tracks aren't great also. His voice is so distinct. It comes out really well on "Glad Tidings" but the backing track is a little boring for my taste! Overall this record has some pretty decent highs. But is pretty forgettable. I also don't like 'Van' very much at all. After reading some reviews I've settled on a 3/5.

Variation lacking big time on this one. Morrison has a good voice, the instrumentals are always pleasant but everything mushes together in a way that makes it hard to tell one song from another. Still speaking of the instrumentals, there was anything that felt really distinct enough that I could grab onto it. Just a soup of bass, kick drum, snare. A little piano here. Everything feels a bit... half-committed? Such is the danger, I feel, of Folk Rock sometimes. That said, there are still some songs I enjoyed that I'd happily listen to again; "Moondance", "Crazy Love", and "Come Running".

Se nota que la letra quiere plasmar muchas partes de la vida cotidiana de Van Morrison, variando entre lo nostálgico y lo alegre, pero nunca yéndose a la tristeza pura en sus canciones.q a mí, en lo personal no me llega a conmover tanto más que todo por los instrumentos y el tipo de voz, ya que no me veo reflejado en esa cultura y siento que por eso no llego a sentirme muy identificado, por lo cual le daría una puntuación de cinco de 10, claramente, siguiendo mis gustos personales

Really good album by a really unpleasant guy.

Didn't think it was much of my vibe but I actually quite enjoyed myself. Nice surprise, nice listen.

I don't like Morrison's voice and delivery too much. But I did like this. 3,5.

As someone from the North of Ireland, I know first hand what a prick Van the Man has always been, not to mention in his later years becoming a full Covid/anti vax lunatic But if there ever was a musician the term 'separate the art from the artist' was designed for, its him Exceptional album

Užasno užasno dosadno. Svaka pjesma isto zvuči i realno samo sam čekala da završi album. Nema "soul" koji misli da ima. Nije mi se svidio njegov glas koji je u svakoj pjesmi isti. Na identičan način pjeva svaku pjesmu.

Schöne ruhige Musik, gefällt mir

The obvious Moondance stands out but Caravan is what hooked me. First four songs establishing the tone of mellow, easy like Sunday morning. Caravan laid all the way back. Kinda looks like Gordon Lightfoot RIP Into the Mystic and we have an established trend of deep grooves. Someone put a nickel on the record arm. Bit of a lull for the next two until Brand New Day starts and we're back on track. 3 good songs, the rest was filler. It felt like the overall arch of the album was lost along the way.

Van Morrison - Moondance ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is simply a fantastic album. Very note and every lyric are in the right place at the right time. I recognized about half of the songs, but the other half were all just as strong. And to think, Morrison’s most famous song isn’t even on this album, and it’s still incredible.

i'm feeling a little let down by this album. the list of genres for it includes irish folk but i'm only hearing that on exactly one track, "everyone", which is mostly doing it via a twee little flute part that i kinda don't like very much? its pissing me off a bit..... i got my hopes up for nothing........ ....anyway. other than that, this kinda feels like what the band were trying to do on the two albums of theirs from this list? at least on tracks like "and it stoned me" and "caravan". van morrison is pulling it off a hell of a lot better than they did, thankfully, but i'm much more into the tracks where he's going for more of a soft, soulful sound, like "crazy love" and "brand new day". the gospel choir on those really elevates them too, at least for me. my favourite this time is between the two of those for sure. ultimately i think this one's a bit hit and miss, although the deviation is kinda low if that makes sense? like, i don't think any of the tracks i'm less into are bad, more "less good", but at the same time, i don't think the best tracks are amazing either, they're just, "better". so as a whole it's.... fine..........?

Of course everyone knows Moondance, which is an excellent song. The rest of the album is fine, but mostly seems like background music. A nice feel and sound, but not much that grabs you by the throat and demands repeated listening. I would go with a 3.5 if there were half stars. And if I had never heard Moondance before, I am sure I would have rated it 4.

I'm just not a Van Morrison fan--Moondance is too overplayed, I guess--but I did like some of the horn arrangements on this.

Bangers

Album starts off with 5 straight awesome songs and then the deep tracks just don't hit nearly as hard. His vocals are amazing throughout, and the blend of R&B, soul, and jazz still feel fresh even if the songs are inconsistent.

Decent, but feels like a step down from Astral Weeks. Songwriting is still really strong though so I can see myself returning to this.

This wasn't really doing much for me - quite boring to be honest. Not something I gravitate towards and this hasn't really changed my mind. Feels like the sound track to a film your dad would put on a Sunday.

This was fine, it's just not really my thing. I can see why people like it but I find it a bit too much 'singing'? Like really singing, singing to make the sound come out of your mouth. Trying to make people dance through the sheer power of your singing. Not really my kind of pop music.

I am enjoying "and it stoned me" It was a nice album. Enjoyable and sweet
