***** Perfect, I love it totally

Really love this album. Nostalgia definitely plays a part in my enjoyment of it - reminds me of car journeys with my family - but I also just think the songs are gorgeous. My main complaint is that I think the end of the album isn’t as strong as the beginning, but the beginning is so strong that this is sort of understandable. Shame he’s such a dick. Fav song: Moondance - Into the Mystic, Crazy Love and And It Stoned Me - this feels very much like the sort of album where my favourite so my would change depending on the day Least fav: Everyone

Absolute bloody banger after banger. Vividly remember my mum playing this album all the time in the car growing up. Only reason it doesn’t get 5.0 is that I didn’t care as much for the last two songs. Apart from that it’s near perfect Specific rating - 4.8 Fav song- moondance Least fav- everyone

Never fully sat and listened to a full Van Morrison album before but I've heard some of the songs on this album from my mums playlist- most nostalgically Into The Mystic. Just lovely, calming music, don't think I can fault it. Favourite: Into The Mystic Least: Everyone

The only way they could kill the message of Jesus Christ was to form a church around his teachings and suck all the life out of them over 2000 years. The only way they could ruin the beauty of this album was to play these songs on classic rock radio and in the background at Banana Republic for 55 years. But in both cases, people who can listen without prejudice and who aren’t cringy edgelords can still appreciate them for the magical things they are. The best albums are all of one piece but the individual songs still stand out from one another. This album does that perfectly. The whole album is a singular work of art, but repeated listens reveal the individuality of each song. I love the jazzy loose feel of Astral Weeks, but Morrison’s decision to make his next record a pop/soul album was inspired, even if it was done for commercial reasons. He made an album that was just as good as Astral Weeks but operated in an entirely different idiom. Both albums are brilliant.

My first 5 star of the project! Van Morrison just does it for me. Even though every song on the album kind of sounds the same I love it. And it stoned me will never not get stuck in my head after a listen. And Moondance makes me want to have a dance party in my living room.

Favourite songs: Into The Mystic, And It Stoned Me, Moondance

A beautiful album by an incredible artist. Van Morrison is one of the greats of this era and this album solidifies it.

Van Morrison rocks. This album caught me at the perfect time. Had me in a great mood on my commute and morning coffee. Makes me want to cook breakfast on a Sunday morning and dance with someone in the kitchen. Highly recommend.

“And It Stoned Me” and “Everyone” are some of my all time favorites, rest of the album is great as well.

The first of his string of 5 star albums — Tupelo Honey (not streaming on any of the services) and His Band and Street Choir. Unfortunately, neither of those is in our 1,001 albums. Side one is all bangers, side two still very decent. Van is kind of a tool these days, but this is still a solid 5.

bangers

really great stuff, usually singer songwriter albums can have the issue of having some average instrumentation, but that is not the case here. big fan of this album bc of that.

Van Morrison absolutely crushes this album. Definitely a no skip album, but nearly an all hits album. Songs are melodic, fun, enchanting, catchy, and varied.

Top 30 album for me.

This album doesn’t try to dazzle you with tricks or volume. It moves with quiet certainty, unfolding piece by piece until you're completely surrounded. From the first track, it settles into a groove that feels both effortless and exact. The playing is tight but never rigid, the pacing deliberate, and Van’s voice never pushes harder than it needs to. “Moondance” swings with an ease that masks how precise it really is. The walking bassline underneath does more than just support. It drives, anchors, and dances all at once. “Into the Mystic” feels like breathing, expansive and grounded, while “Caravan” brings heat without chaos. “Crazy Love” strips everything down and still feels full. I was always aware of this album growing up, but it wasn’t until the 90s that I started to really hear it. As a teenager, the structure and restraint became clearer. The warmth, the pacing, the control all clicked into place. Some albums fade over time. This one just keeps getting better.

Phenomenal album. His Brown Eyed Girl gets the most air time but this album has banger after banger that are way better songs. Into The Mystic is phenomenal. The album starts out with And It Stoned Me and just keeps getting better, which is hard to do because that song is amazing. 10/10. I need to listen to ole Van a little more.

Incredible stuff! Love me some Van. Caravan is all time

Such an incredible/warm voice. I'll be listening to this again for sure

What a piece of work! I think this album could always be on repeat. I don’t know what this album does but it makes me reminisce on my memories but also makes me feel like I’m going through someone’s cherished memories.

First listen to Van Morrison and thought that was great. The second half has a hard time keeping up with the insane bar set by the first half but I still enjoyed the second half Rating: 4.8

Every song is brilliant

Moondance by Van Morrison is like the freezer pizza you forgot you had—and then it turns out to be the best meal of your week. You throw it on while the oven preheats and suddenly you're slow-dancing with your cat in the kitchen, whispering “It’s a marvelous night…” to nobody in particular.

My dad used to play this album on our annual family road trip to Florida during the first week of February as we retreated from the cold to escape somewhere warmer. No matter how often I return to listen to it on my own I find it to be straight forward and comforting. However, I will refuse to acknowledge that my preference for it is completely skewed by nostalgic bliss, but instead as I listen to it now as the summer heat relentlessly blasts 100°F temperatures I will unabashedly rave about this album and the sounds of Van Morrison as being about the joys of life during summer.

Maybe childhood nostalgia plays a part but this may be in my top 10 of all time. Outstanding.

A perfect album from a complete whackjob. I love “Astral Weeks,” too — I’m not going to argue with you about which is better. They arrive at the same kind of excellence via different routes.

excellent

Enjoyed! Not what I thought Van Morrison sounded like, kind of folksy

Van the Man! A classic.

I wondered where these great old albums were hiding, and when I'd stop getting dealt Brian Eno elevator noises. I was raised on this one, and personally I'd rate this album as one of the five best of all time. Thank you!

Quality

Such a nice and easy listen!!! Felt the deepest urge to drive with the windows down in Vermont with some freshly made bread

Top tier album, some all time classics on the list and to me no fillers. Great production, great artist.

Moondance is Van Morrison's third album, and the most successful album of his career. The album has gathered extremely high praise over time, as perhaps the greatest "non-American" soul album, and among the best albums every released. The title track and several others on this album have become fixtures of popular music, like "It Stoned Me," "Crazy Love," "Caravan," and "Into the Mystic." The album has been an enduring success, because every track is a beautiful, well-written, folk song.

As one half of iconic British abstract folk jazz come folk come folk pop act Houmous & Chutney we know a thing or two about abstract folk come folk come folk pop careers. 4.7

First time I fw a country artist this album is. Good 8.5/10 album was filled with songs that are relatable.

Oh baby. Love you Van. This album came after The Smiths. Van makes them feel like teenage drama queens. This album lifted burdens. Gave me life.

Five star album. One star man.

Sin duda su mejor disco, el más disfrutable y el más luminoso. Desde el inicio ya te sientes como en casa. Si además incluye Moondance, Into the mystic y Caravan (su mejor versiónn es la de The last waltz en directo) poco más hay que decir. Hay más mucho más: Come Running, Brand new day... Eterno e imprescindible

Great. Distinctive voice and style. Easy album to like

And it stoned me.

Retroactive regret at having not listened to this sooner. This is right up my alley, strong soulful vocals, folk rock backed with horns, I think the first half of the album is stronger than the second, but I felt pretty much straight away after my first listen that this would be a 5, and I've listened to it twice more since then.

Absolutely Perfect

A true classic. A timeless masterpiece.

I know so many of these songs! What an iconic voice.

Yeah I like Van Morrison

I love Van Morrison, and this is my favorite album from him. This album has so many amazing songs that invoke some amazing feelings from me. And It Stoned Me and Caravan will always be on repeat for me. If I could give this album more than 5 stars I could. 11/10.

Van the man

Nice, easy listening. Great instrumentals and good vocal work. 'Moondance' was my fave.

This is what I am here for: an artist I had only slight name recognition of and an banger of an album

This album really makes my van gogh.

Perfect A side. VM delivers an all time great vocal performance - introspective, melancholic, tender and delicate, forceful and reaching. The music is autumnal and folksy, mellow and jazzy, warm and familiar - tied together by great bass playing that underpins lush and deeply textured arrangements. The B side isn't as good, but even so is basically is a sneak preview of the rambling gospel country Americana that the Rolling Stones would do shortly afterwards on Exile. So good the flute is forgiveable.

Definitely biased as Van Morrison has a ton of nostalgia for me. Puts me in a great mood.

Sounds like a blast!

Really great mix of folk rock, blues, jazz, and gospel. Almost every track was exceptional, and every song goes a new and different direction. Even so, the album feels very cohesive. Enjoyed this one immensely.

All time classic

Amazing album, with songs that range from "alright" to "fantastic". Moondance is the second in the heptalogy running from Astral Weeks in 1969 to Veedon Fleece. Truly some of the best soul music ever made. 'Into the Mystic' is the standout but 'And It Stoned Me' and 'Moondance' are both amazing tracks

Thought this album was fantastic, big fan of van morrison.

He’s apparently a first class asshole but damn it, he can make an a-class album. The album is mystical, romantic and sexy all at the same time. To me, this is the yin to Astral Week’s yang; both essential but here you get more polish and clarity in the tracks, less unknowable yearning. And it works here; the vibe throughout is palpable. For some reason “Moondance” reminds me of Fall in New England with the leaves changing color, which is always a nice thought.

Masterpiece.

I can't give an artist I just bought tickets for to see them live anything but 5 stars. You have to be in the mood for a Van Morrison album, but when you do, it becomes perfect and hits just right. This one is filled with a lot of classics, I really like everything on here.

So captivating, well rounded and altogether an enjoyable listen.

Fifty-five years after its debut, "Moondance" remains a magical experience. "Moondance" marks a departure from Van Morrison's previous album "Astral Weeks", showcasing a more vibrant blend of blues and rock while still weaving in elements of jazz and Irish folk. This sound would lay the groundwork for much of his future albums/music. Overall, it is a deeply spiritual album, rich with themes of redemption, nature, love, mixed with other aspect of the human experience. This album features a remarkable collection of classic songs, such as the title track "Moondance", "Crazy Love," "Brand New Day," and the virtually flawless "Into the Mystic." The album is exceptional from start to finish, a truly rare accomplishment. However, a shadow has fallen over Morrison and his music over the last few years. While expecting perfection in any human is unrealistic, demanding empathy and consideration for others is essential. In this regard, Van Morrison's actions have somewhat damaged his musical legacy and they do not reflect the spirit of the songs on this album. Even if you are unhappy about the person Van Morrison has morphed into, as he ages, you should still take the time to listen to this album. It is truly an outstanding masterpiece.

Love this album. Blue eyed soul at its finest.

A poeerful voice yet also a relaxing one, beautiful instrumentation, I loved this album.

First Van Morrison album I’ve ever listened to. Excellent album, very soulful.

I dislike this hippy-dippy R&B-light sound. But (very UNlike Astral Weeks) the great songs here just wash up on shore one after another.

That's my shit right there. Moondance (the song) has always been my go-to karaoke song, but who knew that Moondance (the album) had so much more to offer!

One of my favorite albums, it was the album I learned of Van Morrison.

Van was the first gig I ever saw, I don't remember much other than the singalong of Gloria. He seemed like an old man to the 10-year old me, he was the same age as I am now. I don't know his music that well but everything on this album was great.

Didn't listen but I know

This is on my short list for favorite albums of all time. The title track is perhaps one of the worst on here, and it's still good. I really wish Van wasn't such an asshole, as I love his music.

I loved this album! It will definitely be in my rotation. Finding these gems was what I was looking for when starting this 1001 album journey!

sweet sound

This guy fucks! Just classic after classic here. For the style of music this is, it gets a 5. It isn't my favorite type of music, and certainly not something I'd listen to on the daily, but it puts a smile on my face. The title track is my favorite.

The best of his albums. You can stick your Astral Weeks up yer hole.

Great album

Un très bel et bon album. Plusieurs chansons juste parfaites : « Moondance », « Crazy Love », « These Dream Of You » et « Everyone ». Les arrangements sont vraiment beaux; j’ai surtout remarqué le piano. Il y a aussi de beaux back-vocal de choristes femmes sur certaines pistes. Un grand album que je ne connaissais pas assez comme un tout.

A perfect album. It's not my favorite Van album, but it's probably his best. This was a really good listen today.

Some great songs! I notice crazy love inspired ed sheeran's song we found love

The title track is probably the weakest song on this great album full of great songs. Glad Tidings is still one of the best album closers of all time. Classic Van.

Love it

I went to a van Morrison concert once. He sang a song then introduced his daughter. She sang an hour. This album is perfect though.

Not my favourite because it’s too heavy compared eg to Astral Weeks, but still it’s full of great tunes

seminole

Really enjoyed this one. A mellow and just cozy album. From the start with "And it Stoned me" I was hooked. Honestly, this album is so front-loaded and the whole first side of the album is just filled with great songs like "Moondance" and "Into the Mystic". It drops the ball a bit on the second half which is clearly not as good as the first. If it was only the first side this would be a clear 5 but the second side is just not as good. After some contemplation I still I think this warrants a weak 5 since the first half is so strong and the album is kind of short. The second half is not bad just not at the same level as the first.

luv it

I think Van Morrison is a jerk, but can’t deny this is a great album. Caravan and Into the Mystic are my favorites on this but everything is strong

What a Side A! MY GOD. He truly stacked the bangers here though Side B did still have its moments. A unique blend of Jazz, Soul, Rock, and Folk that just feels good. As much of a jerk as he is, Van Morrison is truly one of a kind and is great at what he does. My favorites were "Into the Mystic" and "Caravan" which will always make me think of The Last Waltz.

Lovely album from a great musician!

Brilliant blend of folk, blues, jazz, and gospel.

I've always enjoyed Van Morrison's voice and was familiar with this album prior to listening for this review. The first 5 songs on this album are bangers and classics, no notes. The back half drops a little but still have that Van Morrison charm. I would give a 4.5 with half stars.

Van brought it on this one.

Close enough to perfect to get the 5 star bump. 4.5/5

absolutely no skips

Somewhere between R&B, rock, and jazz - wonderful to listen to all the way through. I reach for this album every fall, so many great songs

Classic! Every song is a gem. Lots of good memories chilling with friends listening to this record in college

Incredible

Just an absolute classic from van the man

This is THE quintessential Van Morrison album. Top to bottom the album is fire. And it Stoned Me, Moondance, Crazy Love are jams. Into the Mystic is perfect! 1001 album worthy: Yes - 9/16

Almost a perfect album https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-moondance-by-van-morrison?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

Van Morrison is a very unique voice and personality that comes through in his music. Passionate and unique, I love his live performances because you feel this even more than on his studio recordings(listen to Caravan from The Last Waltz live album). The first five songs on this album are five of the greatest classic rock era songs written, the subject matter, the performances, and the soul involved are really unmatched. The second half continues with beautifully written songs performed perfectly with tons of emotion, they just didn't get the radio attention the first half got, but deserved to. You really should hear these songs before you die, or else Ill kill you.

Phenomenal album. Top 5 all time.

One of my favorite albums of the 70s (definitely one of my personal favorites too). This was my first introduction into Van Morrison, and I believe it his best work. I think I got this album in 10th Grade, and admittedly, I wasn't ready for it. I didn't hate it or even dislike it, but I would skip through songs. However, the things that distracted me early on has become the things I love the most about this record. The blues and jazz influence are really what makes this record magical. Specifically, the horns. He uses them so cleverly and they kind of sneak up on you. You get a few in "And It Stoned Me," and you kind of think its just an accent piece, but no... He goes hard with brass. It defines the entire album. Which is what makes its so good. The brass isn't simply just an "accent" or an added effect, he uses them throughout. He changes the mood and emotion behind each song with the brass section, he even compliments lyrics with horns. (Into the Mystic.) It really is such a brilliant composition of music. It feels like the rest of the rock, blues, and folk world were doing one thing and then Van Morrison comes out of Belfast with this wild album that doesn't really sound like any of it but it fits perfectly within that world. Its no wonder, that Jerry Garcia would frequently cover Van Morrison. *It Stoned Me -this was the song that converted me. Its impossible to hate this song. Not only does this song kind of take you somewhere else, but I love how its kind of about fishing. As a teenager, this song made me feel cool about fishing with my dad. *Moondance -this was the song that turned me off! And then turned me back on. He just makes a full on jazz song right after a country song? Ballsy. This song started to come around for me after Robin Williams plays in his harmonica in that weird ass August Rush movie. *Crazy Love -such a good love song. Impossible to hate. This song is a mood that you can just love in. *Caravan -holy shit. This song. This song is a journey that makes you want to literally just join the caravan and go wherever this takes you. *Into the Mystic - this has got to me in the to 10 best songs of the 70s. I love this song. I'll never skip this one. I love how the horns sound like a fog horn when he sings that lyric. *Come Running -this one is fun. Its definitely the most "rock and roll" of the album. A necessary inclusion to keep this record round. *These Dreams of You -the freakin clarinet solo?? Get outta here. So rad. *Brand New Day -the best blues song on the album. The back up singers, the way he throw his voice. Brilliant. *Everyone -having lived in Northern Ireland, this one always makes me feel things. Peace for everyone. *Glad Tidings -perfect ending. Its so fun and upbeat. Ends on a banger.

Perfect from cover to cover. Great selection for Thanksgiving

5- Stars (13/15)

Music hey? Weird isn’t? Logic says I wouldn’t like Van Morrison. It’s all too close to so much I don’t usually enjoy (Jazz, Croon, Swing). But I love so much of his work. When it works for you it works for you, no need to overthink it. This whole album is great, but ‘Into the Mystic’, ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘Glad Tidings’ are different level of beautiful. The album artwork though would get zero stars! (I’ve seen him live. Exceptional voice, catalogue of songs and musicians with him. But my God he’s a miserable bugger. Never said a thing between songs, never thanked his band, didn’t acknowledge the crowd for coming. Nothing. Just went on, sung his heart out and fucked off 🤣)

Listened to it twice, back to back. The horns, the rhythm and the lyrics! One of my all time favorite songs is “Into the Mystic”. The idea that the foghorn is a warning of danger, but to the guy in the song it means that he is getting closer to home where his lover is. Just brilliant!

First Van Morrison album I ever heard and probably still my favourite although the more I listen to Astral Weeks I think it may take over the number one spot! Not a bad track on here and the great ones are truly great. He may be a miserable old duffer who hates the world and everyone in it but boy can he write (and sing) a tune.

a wide hodgepodge of different songs on this one, everything from easy listening acoustic songs to peppy pop tunes. there's a lot of songs that are made for you to sing along to. i don't know, something about happy soft rock from this decade is just a treat all the way through. i always seem to fall in love with the songwriting... it's a good listen and it'll put a smile on your face when you're down. my favorite track also features in the sopranos.

He's been making some of the world's best music for nearly 60 years. Not great in concert, and terrible in interviews, but he's Van Morrison. He gets to do what he wants.

There are those few albums that are masterworks, full of solid songs start to finish, albums that only seem to get better as they move along with us through time. This isn’t a trick, where I now say “…but this isn’t one of those albums”, because this IS one of those albums, at least for me.

How can this be any less than a 5? And it stoned me takes me right back to being a teenager myself and is one of my all time favourites. Almost a perfect album start to finish that I have revisited at every stage in my life.

Love it.

5a. Alla låtar är bra, rösten är bra, musiken är bra, arrangemanget. Allt är bra.

5/5 - Listened to this so many times and it's timeless

I've always known Van Morrison's music growing up, they play them all the time on the radio; I've never known of a time when I "first" listened to Brown Eyed Girl, it was always there, so I gave his music for granted, and boy was I in for a susprise. Turns out he is an excellent, talented, and prolific musician. He writes his songs and makes his albums thematically and tonally cohesive. He might be a bellend as the legend goes, but he takes his music seriously. This would be a 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion, but I'm giving it 5 stars because I discovered this living legend is still making music in 2024, and yes, he's gotten into taking a stand against the establishment, and I absolutely respect that.

A five of five!

Great album - van’s the man! Caravan is a lot tamer in studio, but there’s still a fantastic six song stretch from the And It Stoned Me to Into the Mystic.

Damn near perfect

Simply a masterpiece. Sometimes great music leaves not much room for commentary. Van Morrison has made several albums like this.

Favorite Track: Caravan

Bright, easy music. I’m not a big fan of jazzy, bluesy music, but I think he handles himself well lyrically and vocally. There are moments where the horns have an schmaltzy, almost variety show sort of quality. But it's also an interesting blend of old and modern music.

One of those albums that you just can't put down. Side A is all killer. Side B is great. Such a warm sounding album.

Easy (10) ★★★★★

Don't care too much for the title track, but the rest is excellent. 5 stars

Terrific album with numerous highlights. Into the Mystic is awesome.5 stars

Another classic 70’s chill album. Released in ‘70, this album helped set the tone and style for the decade. I remember so many from this on frequent radio rotation throughout my childhood. A strong *4 plus rounding up for influence and impact. 4.5/5

Awesome album!! Listened to it twice and a few songs 3 times!

I had heard this album in full beforr, but not in a long long time. It was great to get to experience it again with fresh ears. Van Morrisson is a master of his craft. His songwriting speakd to a part of the human experience that everyone has a connection with. His songs are light yet compelling, and his voice punctuates at the right time. Overall- I really enjoyed it and will definitely put it on again. Id say 4.5/5 but I think it clinches the 5 spot- I can see this album having a big influence on a lot of people

No bad songs 5/5

Take the greatest white, soiul voice that has ever exist. Write catchy yet timeless tunes. Stir. Bake. The result is Moondance.

Loved this. It was comfortable like an old woollen sweater.

Yeah, it’s pretty good. I also recommend Coca-Cola and Steven Spielberg movies.

Terrific classic record, many easy to listen to tracks that I can enjoy time-after-time.

5 stars, a masterpiece. And Van Morrison is a treasure.

These dreams of you stoned me into the mystic on a brand new day, so I had to do a crazy love moondance.

My mate’s dad used to play with Van Morrison years ago. Van was such an insufferable arse that none of the band could stand him. To get their own back, the band would get Van’s harmonica and, each night, would drag it up their arse crack. Van would blow his lungs out on that shitty harmonica every gig they played that tour. The man is that much of a dickhead. Anyway, the dickhead made a 5⭐️ album here

- Favorites while listening to the album: And it Stoned Me (acoustic solo is really tasty as well as the piano solo is great), Moondance, Crazy Love (Absolute Favorite), Caravan, oh fuck it I love every song - like it a lot more than The Doors self-titled album - I like his vocals a lot, its nothing too special but definitely a high recognition value :) - this album surely has me in a grip; the mixture of blues, rock, jazzy elements and soul, compliments each other really well - its remarkable how well he can adjust his voice to each genre -Van’s singing is pure expression, pure sound; the band moves off and then forward again - A graceful soprano saxophone holds notes behind Morrison’s words, absolutely wonderful - “Into the Mystic” I’d say is the heart of Moondance; the music unfolds with a classic sense of timing, guitar strums fading into notes on a piano, the bass counting off the pace - the lines of the song are gorgeous - that’s what listening to this album feels like: a lush, sunny Sunday morning in my old berlin flat, just putting my morning vinyl on (still in my Pyjamas) and drinking a hot cup of green tea with a bit of honey, enjoying the sun and smoking a cigarette on my balcony; after that I’ll choose my fit of the day -> can’t decide but the leather jacket, that I got off the fleamarket, which smells like an old closet and basement, will definitely be a part of it :DD - I think Morrison itself is such an interesting person, his journey of finding his sound, his admiration and love for music is something you can really feel in his songs - 100% sure that I am going to come back to this album, and I am certain that this belongs in my vinyl collection, absolutely astonishing album with otherworldly compositions and vocals - it is such a feel good album and for me kind of time machine into what the 60s might have felt like OVERALL: 5/5

Van Morrison simply did not miss between November of 1968 and 1972, when he put out five consecutive five-star albums. This was the second, and by far the most popular, in the streak, and who can argue with it? It displays an unreal range of songwriting, composition, and vocal chops, and that's just the first four songs.

Shear brilliance

I love Tracey Chapman more than I do Van Morrison. Jim Morrison however is highley likely.

Such a lovely album!

I loved listening to this. It's a lively fusion, of rock, blues, soul, and singer-songwriter, with Van Morrison himself being the star performer. Morrison's voice is punchy, powerful, and surprisingly unique (given the enormous number of vocalists in the soul scene by the 1970s). He varies his tone from tender to wild to mournful, and everything between, throughout the album's tracks. The drumming is usually light, swung, and very committed to a jazz sound (this is good). The acoustic guitar is lovely, drifting in and out of the mix as appropriate; similar comment about backing vocals, brass, and other "guest" instruments like the flute in the title track. Every song on side 1 is utterly fantastic. And sure, the latter half of the album is a little more forgettable, but it maintains the sound/stylistic quality of the first half and keeps me wanting more. 5/5 Key tracks: And It Stoned Me, Moondance, Crazy Love, Caravan, Into The Mystic

Just re-purchased this album recently. It sounds amazing and every song is great.

While Van Morrison the person is debatable, his music is not. This is peak Van and the first 5 songs of this album might be the best side 1 of any LP, ever. Side 2 isn't quite there but it's hard to compare to side 1. Don't make me choose my favorite track because it is impossible. I love them all. His voice and smooth music is so amazing and soothing. I need to listen to this one more often.

Perfection

Still great.

Van the Man! Legend!

A true piece of mastery. 5

Yeah, I have always really enjoyed this album, but it's been too long since I listened to it start-to-end. Thanks 1001!

Like an old comfy sweater

I really dig this singer-songwriter album that just so happens to have a full band. Of course, most people know of Van Morrison from Brown Eyed Girl so hearing what else he made besides that track makes me appreciate that song more in retrospect. 4.5 bumped up to 5.

I’m at a highly recommended 4.5 that I'll bump up to a 5, again. Much like the Pretenders album felt kind of like the first real album of the 1980s in terms of setting the tone from a production, instrumental, and lyrical standpoint, I think this album might’ve really set the tone as the first real album of the 1970s. Yes, you could call me a complete moron and point to Abbey Road as such, far ahead of schedule, and I would call that valid. However, I really think this touches deeper into the sort of folksy Americana that defined the direction the U.S. took as a way to reclaim its own sound from Beatlemania, and in that way, it feels like the first album of the 70s from an entirely American perspective. I fucking loved this. The only reason it’s not at a flat 5 to begin with is because I do think some tracks don’t tonally mix super well as a cohesive album from front to back (very specifically targeting “Everyone” here, but Come Running kinda suffers from this as well), and sometimes his vocals are too incomprehensible because he’s throwing too much emotion into them… but those are realistically nitpicks in the long run. They might bite at me more on subsequent listens, but I shouldn’t care that much. I think just about every track here is a fantastic showcase of this jazz/swing/rock hybrid that gets nailed to perfection in terms of the soundscapes – there’s some really stunning stuff, and the 2013 remasters do them incredible justice in terms of balancing and mixing. Before listening to this, the only Van Morrison song I was aware of was Brown Eyed Girl, and I’m so very glad this isn’t just 39 more minutes of songs that sound suspiciously like that. This is a really, REALLY good album, and it’s very deserving to be on the list. I’m surprised that I’ve never interacted with any of these songs before now, but they’re deeply down my alley. Just a great album, and a very easy one to bump up to a 5.

Really excellent album as a whole with a number of excellent individual songs. An all time favourite for sure.

I’d never heard this album, I knew some songs. What an awesome album. In fact, I turned around and listened to it again. Love this album and I think I’m going to enjoy listening to his other albums. There is a reason artists cover his material.

Nostalgic and soooo good

Moondance has always been one of my favorite albums. I know Astral Weeks is the album everyone puts down as Van Morrison's best album, but this one always stood out to me. There is no song on there that I don't like

Already know this will be a five, just such a good album and basically my childhood.

Brilliant

So sick. This album rocks. I’m starting to think VM can’t miss.

Platonic ideal of a blue-eyed-soul album. Man, I hope this Van Morrison guy doesn't develop any questionable views in his old age!

One of my favorite albums of all time. Love Van Morrison. Love this album.

I only had one song off this album saved when I went to spotify to listen but then hit play and realized I knew this whole album! absolutely something my dad (presumably) put on when I was a kid. I love it I love his voice and I love the use of the saxophone.

Fantastic listen. His most consistent album in my opinion. Quite the departure from Astral Weeks which was very jammy and spaced out. These songs are much tighter, more radio friendly and they stick in your head in a good way.

One of the best albums EVER!

I love it. 5

Shitty people can make great art.

Is there a single note out of place in this record? Rich and unhurried and oh so thoughtful, it's fully enjoyable and listenable in any weather or mood. A time-well-spent or bettered-by-every-hearing sort of record. Both sides contain gems galore and when a song as overplayed as the title cut holds up so well over time, one knows the quality is deep and lasting. "And It Stoned Me" is an all-time opener, feels like the opening scene of a Shakespeare play in the sense that the dialogue starts right out of the gate and and so compellingly. "Into the Mystic" is at once elevating and soothing and every other cuts offers considerable pleasures and intrigues. Just great.

Van the man! I love this album

I was just thinking it was a bit odd that I hadn't gotten a Van Morrison album yet, and here we finally are. This is his third album, released in early 1970, and it's great. I guess his previous album (which I believe is also on this list) was a bit more of an abstract folk-jazz thing which didn't land as well commercially, so he went a more lively rhythm / blues on this one, and hit it out of the park. It's not the most groundbreaking thing in the world, but the execution is basically perfect. It's soulful and folky and jazzy and light-sounding and enjoyable. The lyrics are contemplative and ful of wonder and love. It would work on an easy Sunday morning with a cup of coffee, or a late Saturday night after a bottle of wine with someone you love. It was hard to pick my favorite song. "Crazy Love" slightly edges out "Into the Mystic" for me, but they're both great. The first half is definitely the stronger half, but there's some real gems on the B-side as well ("Glad Tidings" is awesome to end it). It's a bit simple, but sometimes that's ok, this is great (I do think the album cover is pretty weak though, that's my complaint). Favorite song: Crazy Love Other: And It Stoned Me, Moondance, Caravan, Into the Mystic, These Dreams of You, Brand New Day, Glad Tidings 7/29/24

One of those albums that is so ubiquitous that it's a little tough to hear it with fresh ears. But songs like "Come Running" help show how the whole album must have felt when it was new. This one that seems very of a time but captures it so well it's still a treat.

Absolute classic chill feel-good album.

This is the reason I LOVE and LIVE for music as a whole, this was wonderful to listen to. The first five songs going into this are extraordinary. There are absolutely no duds on here whatsoever. You can really feel the passion and fire that Van Morrison puts into these tracks. All of them having fantastic production as well as beautiful, poetic, and soulful vocals. After relistening to this a few times there is no doubt in my mind that I'll be happily listening to this for the rest of my life. Best - And It Stoned Me, Moondance, Crazy Love, Caravan, Brand New Day, Glad Tidings Worse - NONE 5/5

The more I listen to Van Morrison the more I like his music, it's a shame he's such a tool in real life :( This album is fantastic, every song hits and it has two songs that I consider to be some of the greatest songs ever written (Caravan and Moondance). MASTAPIECE

Van Morrison is kind of a crappy person, but I can’t deny he’s made some amazing music. This is absolutely my favorite album of his. The first half is definitely stronger than the second half, but it’s still pretty good top to bottom. “And It Stoned Me,” “Crazy Love,” and “Everyone” are my favorite songs on the album. I especially love “Everyone” because of its use in The Royal Tenenbaums, which is my favorite movie. To me, Van Morrison has great singles more so than albums, but this is definitely his masterpiece.

I adore this record!

Classic!

I enjoyed this one, lot of good songs, some of which sound like Brown Eyed Girl. Solid album length. There’s one guitar part on Into the Mystic that sounds similar to the Peace Train song. Low 5.

Pookie is looking pure fire

9/10 - This was a fantastic album. I loved almost every song on it. And the cover art is actually so funny to me. I kind of wish the songs flowed together nicer and didnt all end in a fade out.

Fifty years later, this album is still a fantastic listen from start to finish! We’ve listened to it many, many times over the years so know every song well. L’s rating: best album so far (3.9*s) J’s rating: Flawless (5.0*s)

I hear where Elvis Costello got his white guy Irish soul inspiration from.

Great album, starting with five solid songs, four for the ages. I like the varying styles and excellent musicianship with Van's great voice leading the way. Liked songs added: - Moondance - Crazy Love - Caravan - Into The Mystic

This album never gets old. Into the Mystic is one of the best songs - it can't be touched. The jazzy Moondance is a nice light dance and Everyone is bright.

How can you not love a man named Van?

Favourite tracks: and it stoned me; moon dance; crazy love; caravan; into the mystic; glad tidings

Holy shit. I really like this. Moondance is my love song

Holy moly! What a great, laid back backyard kinda album. Great voice. Enjoyed the horns. Keeping it in the library. 5 stars!

Another album great in its time, even better today. A one of a kind talent.

This album may be the gold standard for five-star albums. One gorgeous song after another. I found myself wondering what it must have been like to be a musician playing on this. They must have known they were creating a masterpiece. The music is so gorgeous it is blocking out my conscience about his medical views…. Sigh… just sit back and let it stone you.

Jebeni van. Očeš ga mrziti ali ne ide 😃

Great album from a classic vocalist. Such a fantastic artist

Such a great collection of songs, And it Stoned Me, Into the Mystic, Moondance, Crazy Love, Come Running.. Yeah basically the whole album. Much more straight forward album then Astral Weeks and accessible but not nearly as good. It's a 4.5.

Every track here is pretty great. Excellent songwriting and top shelf musicians with Van Morrison’s soulful vocals make this easy pick. It’s a bonus that this record sounds wonderful.

Hall of Fame. Desert Island Contender.

Shows why he's van the man

I purchased "Moondance" when I was in high school. My youth pastor and I shared a love of classic albums and he made me a list of 50 albums that he believes I should purchase. This album was on that list. I found a tape of "Moondance" in one of those old bargain bins where tapes used to go to die but you could find some gems. I paid $3.99 for it and never regretted the purchase for a second. Into the Mystic became one of my favorite songs and I am not 100% sure why that is. I also have always loved how it sounds like Van Morrison is singing "the night's magic seems to whisper Anne Heche." The sound of this album is cohesive, yet all over the place in some ways too. If you like this album, then you will probably like other Van Morrison albums as well. This album absolutely deserves a spot on this list.

One of my favorite albums ever. It's perfect.

I grew up listening to Van Morrison so this one is a bit nostalgic. Reminds me of lazy summer evenings on the road, and pretty much every song hits.

pleasant Musik - brilliant voice

Excellent, love it!

Perfect. Could listen to this 100 times

From Wikipedia: "Among the most acclaimed records in history, Moondance frequently ranks in professional listings of the greatest albums [of all time]." Yes. Very much yes. This is one of the greatest albums ever made. If I were to limit myself to just 10 albums to take to a desert island where I could never listen to anything else, this would probably make the list.

I worked with a musician recently who was the biggest asshole I’ve ever worked with. Just an unbearable prick. He’d been compared to Van Morrison which I thought was fitting. That being said I liked his music and I liked this album a lot.

Fantastic.

This album is fantastic. It starts with And It Stoned Me, which is my favourite Van Morrison song, followed by Moondance, which is another gem. Talk about a 1-2 punch! Favourite songs: And It Stoned Me, Moondance, These Dreams of You, Caravan, Come Running, Glad Tidings, Into the Mystic Least favourite songs: Everyone 5/5

Van Morrison fans will tell you that Astral Weeks is his best album. But they’re wrong. This is Van Morrison’s best collection of songs. It’s a little mystical, a little sensual, and a lot soulful. The refrain of Caravan is never far from my lips. And I never skip a single track on the album.

Great music between happy and melancholy.

A triumphant follow-up to Astral Weeks, this album finds Morrison confidently moving through different musical styles with ease. His added vivid lyricism adds to each song.

While it may have its minor flaws, they pale in comparison to the album's many strengths, making it a classic that will be cherished for generations to come.

Despite Van Morrison's personal failings, this is still one of my favorite albums. It seems like nearly every song on this album got and to some degree still gets airtime, and it's always a pleasure to listen to the album in its entirety. I can't say that about too many albums that *aren't* a greatest hits album or a compilation. I do wish it was easy (or even possible) to respect the artist as much as the album, but we take what we can get.

Few albums summon a vibe, an atmosphere, an era as well as this one does. Too bad Van Morrison seems to be a jerk irl.

Certifiable classic.

Morrissey and van back to back! Separating the art from the artists this week. This has gotta be a 5 cmon

Very good album.

39 minutes of all go, no lag. Seamless and leaves you on a great up note. What a great journey!

Loved this album. Added to list.

Every song here is great. It seamlessly blends low-key folkiness with the vocal energy of soul. This is perfect music for kicking back with a beer in the dog days of summer.

All-time classic album! Into the mystic is my favorite of his songs!

Overall enjoyed it, have heard a lot of these songs growing up.

This is a 5 star album even if it was only 4 songs long. Timeless

9/10 incredible solid album that makes you love life for 50 minutes

Lub em

love this guy

One of my all time favorite albums

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. When you think of Van Morrison, this is him at his Van Morrison-ist. Even though "Brown-Eyed Girl" is probably his most famous song, every song on this album was (and still is) capable of being a radio hit. The fact that three amazing songs like "Moondance", "Crazy Love", "Caravan", and "Into the Mystic" are not just on the same album, but one after the other is a testament to how good this album is

Classic, great album

Right off the bat the opener “and it stoned me” grabbed me. This is catchy. Skipped moondance. Great tune. I’ve heard it enough. Crazy love is a great tune. This record is just great some after great song. Skipped mystic because like moondance I’ve heard it enough. This album is so good I can’t believe I have not listened to it before. Fantastic record

All the classics and already one of my favorite albums

Love it

One of the most meaningful and most heard albums of my life. My grandma favorite album, she played it all the time. Everyone song is great, with some distinct beautiful outliers like Into the Mystic.

A classic.

Soulful voice, timeless music!

One of the greatest of all time. I'll never get tired of hearing this.

Such a great album for any occasion

What a beautiful album Van Morrison has such nice and lovely songs. I started listening and I was like this is so familiar. I bet this guy sings brown eyed girl and I was right it is the same guy

Classic

An absolute classic. Not much more to say on this album.

Another artist that I came to late. Never really got into his music when I was younger but as I matured so did my tastes and I realised what a great musician Van Morrison is. I am currently still purchasing his albums and only yesterday obtained two of his lesser known albums at a charity shop. The album which started it for me was Astral Weeks but Moondance quickly followed. It is perhaps his most accessible album. I never tire of listening to Van Morrison albums as every listen brings new delights and discoveries. As illustrated here when listening again for purposes of review. Had a 4 in my mind but after another listen decided it is a top class album and an all time classic. A 5 all day long. Today is the first day of spring and this record is perfect. If any record could be a lazy, sunny summers day this is it.

Adore this album

Excellent

Yeah this is about as good as it gets. Every song is excellent and infinitely repeatable. Caravan also probably being one of my favorite songs of all time. My first 5 star review- 9.5/10 (4.75/5)

A favorite, for sure. Easy, laid-back, soulful. Yacht Rock essentials.

one of my favorite albums. Into The Mystic and Crazy Love being two of my favorite songs. amazing singer/songwriter, and enough variety throughout that makes the whole album a great experience.

Love this album. The best example of his voice

Great album, standout tracks are "And it Stoned Me" and "Into the Mystic"

What a great album, great for throwing on and drinking whisky, or staring off a porch into a dusky sunset.

Ahh, yes. So many good songs on this album. I still can't help but like Van Morrison's older music despite the controversial lyrics in his newer stuff (anti-vax, antisemitism, etc.). I've loved And It Stoned Me and Into the Mystic since college and still put them on chill playlists from time to time. I'd completely forgotten about the songs Caravan and Everyone, but I really enjoyed them both while listening through the album. I'm pretty sure I first heard Everyone on a movie soundtrack (The Royal Tenenbaums - I went through a Wes Anderson phase like probably a ton of people) and it's a lighthearted, feel-good song.

Three Dog Night + Credence Clearwater Revival. Morrison's soulful rock is excellent. I'm a sucker for songs with horns and this album absolutely delivers. I was hooked from the first song, "And It Stoned Me," and the hits just kept on coming. I didn't skip any song. I was entranced, I was bobbing my head, I was digging the rhythms. I downloaded the album.

Great album, probably Van Morrison's most popular, all killer.

I’ve loved Moondance ever since I first played it in my middle school jazz band. An excellent album with songs that frequently find themselves stuck in my head.

Great songwriter and song stylist surrounded by interesting musical arrangements. 60 years of music. I saw a concert in 1966! Try Astral Weeks album.

Very good! His best songs are on this album.

Excellent album. Every song is good. Thumbs up from me

Upbeat, enjoyable album. His iconic voice can't be mistaken. Music is good. Variety is good.

i'm amazed

love the voice, love the music, love the freely given and taken emotion

My god what a record. And It Stoned Me is an all-time great opener. The title track is a weird and fantastic romper. Crazy Love is timeless, and Into The Mystic is simply one of the greatest songs ever recorded. While it’d be impossible to maintain that level of excellence of the opening side, the back half of the album is still fantastic. Van’s vocal performance is insane throughout and these songs could only be his. I love Astral Weeks but I personally rate this one slightly higher, as its high marks are as good as it gets.

Easy 5*s for me. sublime music

Van the jazz man, just lay back, smoke a bowl and let it wash over you like fresh irish spring water. Pair this with his preceding album, Astral Weeks, and you might never be able to function in regular society again... Every song hits just right, every note is crafted with laser precision, even it sounds like Van turned up and recorded this with no thought about anything, just improvising like a demon. Shame he descended into fucking Eric Clapton level madness during COVID, exposing himself to be a raging antivaxer and skirted with a little antisemitism because if you're in for a penny, you may as well be in for a pound. But, that said, people say it’s not the artist, it’s the art and "Into The Mystic" remains an absolutely perfect song...

Love this album

Didn't realize that all of these songs were on the same album. Love every single one of them.

Van Morrison makes some of the most soothing and relaxing songs that feel personal. The lyrics are great. The jazzy instruments are wonderful.

Great vocals and a nice mix of song styles.

Loved every bit of this album! Lots of genre play in here actually. Really loved it.

Love Van Morrison!

svaka mi bolja od prosle :)))

na prvu nista posebno al dok je dosa do kraja bas mi se svidia

Auuuuuuu meni je ovaj album jako smirujuć i volin ga. I saksofon

Jedan od mojih najdražih albuma!! Vraćam mu se često!

Exceptional in the mood it sets and in the simplistic, or deceptively, simple songwriting which has a mysterious air. Delivery and tone are key, and I'm personally a big fan of the recording quality, too.

Masterpiece. I’ve listened to this album hundreds of times in my life, and couldn’t live without this album.

Van Morrison's 'Moondance' is a sonic awakening through jazz-infused bliss. Each track is a moonlit dance of soulful melodies and poetic lyrics—a musical rendezvous that leaves you craving more. It's not just an album; it's a celestial groove that transcends time. This I'd truly one of the best albums of all time!

Супер крутой альбом супер крутого певца

Another absolute classic. 19 songs in 38 minutes encompassing soul, jazz, folk and rock. I haven’t heard all of Van’s albums but I can’t imagine any top this. We will see!

I had the great fortune to see Van Morrison live Slieve Donard in Newcastle, Northern Ireland. The concert was a 350 person dinner show. Played golf at the Royal County Down Golf Club that morning. Enjoyed drinks with our new found golf friends (also there for the show) after the round. That evening had the most memorable live show I have ever attended. WOW, what a trip. Van played several cuts off this album. This was a bucket list event for me. Nothing else is even close. When I die this album will be played.

A complete and total classic.

Love this album. It brought back memories.

Hele prettige verrassing! Folky rock muziek met country invloeden, muzikaal, melodieus, fijn om naar te luisteren, en met leuke instrumenten. Met een aantal goede nummers waarvan ik niet wist dat ze van Van Morrison waren zoals oa het titelnummer Moondance.

Really a stellar album. High cohesion between tracks and an excellent performance from the artists. Half of theses tracks will be in a DJed wedding reception and you would be happy to hear them.

Great album. Been in my collection since early 70s

Van the man!!

Into the Mystic was probably my favorite song on this one. Very fun and, in some places, relaxing listen.

Classic from growing up!

This was an album I heard a lot as a kid. Moondance was my parents’ wedding song. It’s not my favorite, but I’ll add a star for them.

Is this in my top 50 albums of all time? Yes. Do I love it a lot? Also yes. Van’s voice is legendary here. 4.5/5 Fav: “Everyone” Least Fav: None

taps your foot to the music...

I've always been a fan of this album, and a big fan of Van Morrison. Sort of soul music for me.

It's a go-to for me. Helps me relax and settle in... which I need :)
