Reviews (page 9 of 12)

Lost the main notes because I didnt hit save, so quick notes first song, Get ready for love 4/5 hiding all the way 2/5 (not great but good bits) Messiah ward 1/5 There she goes my beutiful world 2/5 (chorus good but feels like church) nature boy 4/5 (coherent up beat travel music consistent, drags a little to long but ends when you begin to notice(rather it end before you notice)) Abbatoir blues 2/5(very slow) ---------- overall the album is and isn't my cup of tea, the genres is all over the place from song to song and is only really worth while if you are into every genre. Best just pick favourite songs and listen to them then whole album. overal 3/5 prefer rush but for what its worth it aint bad you know. with a number of songs i would have sped it up in areas added a break down or something (im probably to tuned in for this). Learn breathless on guitar please. It really does grow on you

OKAY FINE... I normally hate Nick Cave, but quite enjoyed this one (especially Abattoir Blues). Don't know if I'd return to it as I don't like his voice much, but the lyrics weren't all as melodramatic as some of his other work.

Quite a variety for one album

Started off being indifferent but then the second half really drew me in. I'll probably need to listen to it a few more times before making a good assessment.

I enjoyed all of this and I think some of it could really grow on me with some more listens. I don't really know how to review a double album. If it had just been Abattoir Blues, maybe I would have given it a 4. But as a complete album, it felt like it lost a lot of steam in the middle (The Lyre of Orpheus) and dragged on. Should I listen to these halves separately? Maybe. But I have to give a rating to the whole album.

A nice chilled feeling. There's an operatic quality to his voice which I like. Good easy listening album

innovative. interesting. not necessarily good

It's for some people, I guess...

Not quite for me.

At first I thought this album would change my opinion that Nick Cave albums are generally slow and boring. As it progressed, I started drifting into a slumber because it's exceedingly long runtime which smothered my hope of rating this high. The music was good, but like who can listen to this entire thing for fun?

Some cool songs but not all the way my jam

This is ok. Didn't hate, didn't blow my mind. Wanted to understand the hype, but didn't see it. Very long album.

Easy Money best song of the album.

another album with mr. cave’s unique take on what can best be described as gothic folk. dalliances in blues and even gospel. not his best, but still pretty solid.

Skipping some songs the album is bloated, but there are some interesting tracks like let the bells ring. But some others that are just tiresome. Lyrics kind of funky and beatnik so I get the appeal.

Finally an album I was familiar with. It's fine. I've listened to this a few times. I know some consider it pretty groundbreaking and special. To me, it's just a fairly good rock album that takes a few small risks. All in all it's a pretty safe album. The lyrics are really good, and the concept is good. But it's just not really something that's going to stick with you long term. And I still don't really get why O Children was the top billed track on here.

I've always head of Nick Cave and I've listened to him off and on, but his music isn't necessarily one I'd pick to play. This was a decent album. A little different than I was thinking.

Get a bit of a Talking Heads vibe with a bit more edge to the sound - Loved Nature Boy but the rest of the album is just okay.

Not a favourite for me, from start to finish, but there is a lot of nice poetry and beautiful melancholy atmosphere here and there

Would be twice as good if it was half as long.

Indifference

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds hefur allt sem ég óska mér, blússkotið rokk með góðum textum í góðum flutningi. Samt er eitthvað sem ég hef aldrei getað sett puttann á sem veldur því að mér finnst þetta ekkert sérlega skemmtilegt. Það eru einstaka lög sem ég get hlustað á en það eru einhverjir fordómar sem fá mig til að hugsa: "Æjnei! Ekki Nick Cave". Kannski þarf ég bara að komast yfir það og byrja að njóta en þangað til eru það smáskammtar. Gef þrjár störnur því ég mun reyna að hlusta á meira og reyna að komast í stuð því ég ætti að fíla þessa tónlist í botn.

Not for me

This is so long, it’s hard to digest and determine its merits. Nick Cave has never really sunk in for me, I’ve tried but haven’t connected yet. There are some solid songs here, nothing that stuck out as amazing though. I get a strong feeling of unease listening to it though, like something evil or unexpected is lurking behind the next corner. This would be solid thunderstorm music, I’ll revisit it then. For now it’s a 2.5, round it up for the content overload.

First half: I’m not disliking this as much as I thought I would. Not a fan of Nick Cave’s voice or the backing vocals that keep popping up, but the instrumentation is unique, full, and engaging. Cannibal’s Hymn was especially cool. I don’t know what to say about the other songs though. There are moments in all of them that I enjoy, but I’m not necessarily a fan of the songs as a whole. Second half: This is what I expected from a Nick Cave album. I actively despise some songs, such as Fable of the Brown Ape, but I liked a couple others: Breathless and Spell.

There are some fantastic songs. Also, some cringey lyrics.

It's a good album. Nothing too crazy though. Could have been two different albums, but whatever, more music for me. Get Ready for Love and The Lyre of Orpheus were pretty good.

Energizing, but I think it needs a 2nd or 3rd listen to enjoy. Also probably need better headphones to fully enjoy

I was hoping this might help me ‘get’ Nick Cave but still not there yet. OK is best I can do…

Nog een keer luisteren

Production value was good, not really my kinda music though

This sounds like a discount child of Lou Reed and Springsteen.

I can’t think of anything to say about this

I’m a recent convert to Nick Cave and absolutely love everything he’s done from Push The Sky Away onwards. Carnage and Ghosteen are absolutely brilliant and both should be on future versions of this list. I’d listened to his earlier work and seen his performances on TV but nothing struck a chord with me. This album comes from that era but I recently bought this album on CD. It is the box set version and was pretty cheap so I thought it was worth a punt and the chance to find out if there was something in his music I was missing. Truth is after purchase it went onto my ‘give it a serious listen’ pile and there it remained until the album timely arrived on my list today. After one listen through in full I still think that there is something missing from his earlier for me to give a 5/5 which I desperately wanted to. I much prefer The Lyre of Orpheus disc and can hear lots of things I love and if it was this disc alone I could give it 5/5. The Abattoir Blues disc is just OK. Not bad but not melodic enough to blow off my socks. Future listens may change my mind as I know Nick Cave music including lyrics is a challenge and something you’ve got to persevere with to get full satisfaction. 3/5 23/4/24

Ugh, I love Nick Cave but this album was the one when I started to fall out of love with him alas. It's just so arch, and his vocal and lyrical style just seems really self conscious on this record. BUT There She Goes My Beautiful World is amazing and so is 'Get Ready For Love' and so is 'Carry Me'. 3/5 I'm afraid though.

Not as bad as I thought it was going to be

i don’t really care for nick cave, maybe i will one day

Hit and miss double album. Some good tracks. Standout tracks : Easy Money, There She Goes My Beautiful World, Let the Bells Ring, O Children

This album took me forever to get through, but not necessarily because of anything bad. It is listenable, but just a busy weekend for a double album. The first song gave me some Talking Heads vibes (from what little I know of them) then I constantly kept coming to that comparison throughout the album. Obviously the singer doesn't have that same tone, but the somewhat odd lyrics and phrases reminded me of what my minds ear thinks of the Talking Heads this weekend. Probably an album I'll come back to when I'm not what is now 3 albums behind schedule. Favorite track "Messiah Ward" 3/5

Excessive run time of 83 minutes caused immediate deflation before I even hit play. Never purposefully sought out Nick Cave since I had the ability to do so. He's got a better voice that Tom Waits, but definitely fits into same sub-genre of gothic rock alternative. This wasn't bad. In fact, I quite enjoyed the second half of this double album much more than the first. So much so, that I now struggle on whether this album deserves a 3 or 4.

Very polished songs from a group I've always heard of, but never listened to. Decent album and the 2 sides were very different.

3.5. Kinda boring, sorry not sorry.

#188. I've never heard anything from this guy apart from the Peaky Blinders theme before and assumed it would just all be like that, but not really so much. The first half was pretty good, I like it, but the second half was honestly just mostly boring. 3/5: it's fine.

Another double album....feck...Nick Cave is an artist that I want to like more than I do. Listened through once and I found myself hoping the song would end soon, especially on Abattoir Blues album. I found myself looking at the titles on Lyre of Orpheus because I heard something I liked.

I left this running in the background while I was doing stuff, and when I looked at what song was playing, it was towards the middle of the second disc, so I was very happy that the songs had gone by super quickly. I then later realised that I had shuffle on, and in fact I had only played a couple of songs. It's not too bad, and I especially love the extensive singing in the background, it really adds a lot of extra weight.

This (double) album is much too long for what it is. I much prefer the second half, but altogether can't shake the feeling that, while quite alright, this is not Cave's best material. 2.5/5

Not as bad as Nick Cave solo albums

First time hearing any Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Really interesting. Kept me engaged over both of the albums, but kind of a bit much to take in all at once. Kind of Tom Waits-ish but without the annoying gravelly-voiced circus ringmaster character. Kind of pretentious, the songs about love and sex were compelling but lack ambiguity or abstraction that makes someone else's stories artistic. Otherwise very enjoyable on a Saturday afternoon cleaning my raingutters!

First NCBS album I’ve listened to. Not my thing but he’s well thought of. He’s def got his own sound.

Decent album, although it seemed to drag in some places. Didn't love it, didn't hate it.

I haven’t heard this guy before this. Interesting voice and sound, good writer

Mellow, sad, soothing.

Better than I thought it would be, the first half is the vastly superior side.

Not very familiar with Nick Cave but enjoyed some tracks on this album. Though I also felt some tracks sounded very similar.

Cave’s lyricism often grabs my attention, and his enunciation practically demands it, though I’m not always so captivated by the musical worlds it mingles in.

This album isn't bad but each individual song gets pretty repetitive. I like the aesthetics surrounding the album and the lyricism but the actual songs weren't my favorite. I saved 'Get Ready for Love', 'Messiah Ward', & 'The Lyre of Orpheus' but as for the rest of the album I couldn't see myself wanting to go back to re-listen despite not thinking the songs were bad.

pretty good, but I don't like his voice, and it's a little too yeehaw for my personal taste

Favourite Nick Cave album, not miserable like some of his others. Interesting 7/10

So much good about this album, but it was so long and there was as much that I didn't love.

One of the better options for grouchy poetry singers, but I like Leonard Cohen better. There She Goes, My Beautiful World and Hiding All Away were highlights for me.

His voice grates on me after too many songs

I was bored up until "There She Goes, My Beautiful World." Then I was mostly bored again until a few songs on the second disc. I didn't dislike many of the songs, but they were almost all too 'raconteur'-esque. Nick Cave's low talk-singing doesn't do it for me. The instrumentation was interesting on quite a few tracks, but I could never find my way to enjoying the big picture. I didn't hate it, but I'd never listen to it again. 5/10.

Punched me in the face to start. 1st part was not really my cup of tea even after the initial punch. Messiah Ward was a nice break there. 2nd part much better. Overall a long listen. Consider this ok-not supreme or terrible.

vrij mediocre

Most of the songs were enjoyable but not amazing, my favorite was “The Lyre of Orpheus.”

Surprising! I enjoyed and will listen again to get a better understanding of the lyrics.

Blues rock de Nick Cave. Ni fu ni fa.

This was fine - would not be my go-to jam but okay for an hour or so.

pretty boring and long but ok

Blind album, know the artist from another album on the project. I recognized the final track and the rest was kinda meh. I think I liked the other album more, the bluesy acoustic one, but still a 3.

Almost 4

Blues rock de Nick Cave. Ni fu ni fa.

Well, I thought much of the first album was good, haunting rock. The band is great. His lyrics and whole dark minister thing isn’t my vibe generally, but certain tunes there are objectively good songs. The second album. I think I would enjoy this so much more with a different vocalist/lyrics. I like the music on the second album but his persona, which I realize is a lot of his appeal, doesn’t speak to me.

For reasons I can't fully articulate, I have steadfastly avoided almost all of Nick Cave's work. I genuinely don't know why, but I had this intense resistance to it for like, 15 years, maybe more. Listening to this doesn't offer any clarity on the matter, as it's overall pretty good! "O Children" is kinda bullshit, but the rest is solid or better. My first thought upon starting the album was "Tom Waits with clean vocals", which is hardly a bad lane to occupy.

Appreciate it, but don’t feel the need to listen to it again

Not bad, but not my speed.

Not bad!!

My favourite thing Nick Cave has ever done is that photo with Henry Rollins, looking absolutely terrified at a baby. This was alright

Pretty damn good

Bra greier, ikke helt på fireren

Started good, ended sucky

Doesn't really do anything for me. Not terrible

A bit too slow. The vocals and lyrics are quite good though.

Imaginative, poetic lyrics. Some good songs. I'm not a big fan of his voice and the album feels twice as long as I'd want it to be.

This is a super unique album! I'm not necessarily a fan of it all, but I'm really glad it was brought up as something new to listen to. I've never heard anything quite like it. I greatly appreciated that it wasn't over repetitive and the vocalist actually had unique lyrics and told stories, instead of just repeating chorus and verse ad nauseam. Fav tracks: Hiding All Away, Carry Me, Let the Bells Ring, Supernaturally

fav song: nature boy, messiah ward

not the top rock records i have heard but could be up there with more listens

Enjoyed the album. Nature Boy was a great song.

I’ve never been a big fan of Nick, but this is pretty good. The contrast between the 2 albums is pronounced. Over 80 minutes of Cave is a big ask for me. The constant intensity of his songs is a bit much for me &, at times, repetitive. But this is better than I expected. I think I prefer The Lyre Of Orpheus. Babe, You Turn Me On is a standout.

This isn't bad, but it's not my cup of tea. I'm not sure why. I know there are tons of people who love Nick Cave, but apparently I'm not one of them.

Like all double albums it’s far too long, but some great stuff in here.

I'm pretty sure I've never heard Nick Cave before. I didn't dislike it but it got to be tiresome mid-way through. I didn't add it to my collection, but I'll probably give his other output a shot.

Great all around album, never listened to him before but was surprised by all the different influences that went in to it l. Almost gospel at times.

Despite being only 90 albums into this album generator, this is now my third Nick Cave record, it's not necessarily bad, it's just weird. Although this album so far has been the least impressive to me. The big blues energy in the first half of the record gave me coles corner flash backs, which I did not appreciate in the slightest. The good news was the more mellowed out second half of the record really brought this record back to a decent listen. And it's the tone that I find suits nick cave best. But given the sparsity of interesting songs in between the rest, it's not enough for me to regularly come back to this record. Albums too long, wayyy too long

Appreciate his artistry but mostly not my jam

A classic album, but not for me

It was okay, not for me, but not terrible awful

I liked it. Kind of what I expected from Nick Cave. Like a ramshackle circus band or something. Went quickly despite being a double album. Favorites: Get Ready for Love, O Children

It's like Springstein, Stones, Talking Heads, and Dead someone pulled together this bad. Hard to pin it down. Second half is more lyric focused than I care for in my music. Had to work to get this one done 3/5

Flirted with my interest, but ultimately wasn't able to hold it for that long. Good track to go out on though

3.2/5 Best Track: Nature Boy

Not sure what I was expecting but better than expected… if that makes sense. I have obviously heard of Nick Cave but cannot recall actually listening to a full album. Will give it a few more listens on my next long drive.

Pretty okay album. Liked the instrumentation on it and señor Nick’s voice was nice (better than Bob Dylan’s by far). Liked that most of the songs told stories but lyrically some of it made no sense and was just kinda weird. Supernaturally (track 5 on the second album) was pretty solid.

Just when you start to enjoy the style some disturbing lyrics come along to shake you out of your trance.

Pretty good. Gotta look into what some of the songs mean. Rock/gospel almost. Nice rhythms

Not bad. I like the voice but something about the composition doesn’t quite sit right with me. Maybe I’m not cool enough. Sorry Nick.

Not bad...but not mine...

Different vibe than expected. More soulful than I thought - rather than something more dour.

Sehr ‘in your face’ ahfang, ned de sound woni vo nick cave kenne?? Interesting. Uhhh we love a lil sneaky bass

This is the 3rd from Nick Cave that I got on this list. Liked it more than the others. The songs are glorious and the production is amazing. Is it going on my must-have list? No. [0084/1001]

This is my third Nick Cave album to be assigned, and all three albums have been very different. The Abattoir Blues album was far superior in my mind. I loved the blues rock sound of the songs, and they suited Nick Cave's voice really well. The backing vocals were fantastic as well, and they really kicked the blues sound up a notch. The three song run of "Messiah Ward," "There She Goes, My Beautiful World," and "Nature Boy" were absolutely fantastic. If I were rating the album just on those three songs, this would easily be a five-star album. The two tracks before these songs were great, but after the title track, I lost interest in the last two songs of Abattoir Blues. I wasn't terribly in to The Lyre of Orpheus album. After the hard driving sounds of Abattoir Blues, I just wasn't ready for a comedown. The songs were okay, but outside of "Supernaturally," nothing really snagged my attention. Lyrically, I thought the album was solid all the way through. I love the imagery that Nick Cave uses in his music, and I enjoyed the fact that the meaning of these songs was very open to interpretation. The Biblical references in the lyrics were great too, and just furthered the mystery of what these songs were about. I appreciate the ambition of this double album, but it the second half just didn't land with me.

Some good stuff here, but Nick Cave just isn't my style. It's fine as background noise for me. I understand there are many superfans that will not enjoy my hot take.

Full throated Cave. The Seeds are in their Sunday best. None of the songs got to me yet. Worth revisiting.

Some songs were super interesting, others didn’t do it for me.

Abattoir Blues was rocking hard and then The Lyre Of Orpheus sort of dropped off in quality and wasn't as good.

I don’t get what all the fuss is about. Going with a 3 because it’s definitely not terrible. But it doesn’t live up to all the hype either. I need to listen a few more times to see if it will start to hit better / differently. 3.25

Another example of an artist I’ve tried multiple times to get into with no success. I listened to the boatman’s call and ghosteen and didn’t get much out of it, so wasn’t hopeful here. However, I did learn some things with this album. I learnt that to truly appreciate these albums, I’m going to have to stop and actually focus on listening to them. As in, lie down, close my eyes and listen with no distractions. That’s going to be hard to do day to day, especially if it’s a double album like speakerboxx/ the love below! When I did this with this album, things started clicking. I was able to connect more with the musical choices and relax into the soundscape which took on more depth, I could see the musical layers that had been constructed. I’m not saying I had a transcendental experience or anything, but this helped me get so much more out of the album. I think one day to try and appreciate an album is not enough, 3 listens should be the minimum required to start getting something out of a collection of music, but I managed 2 playthroughs of this and started really getting into some of it. Highlights are mostly from the back half, lyre of Orpheus, breathless and carry me were my favourites. Some of the longer cuts like the opener get ready for love and hiding all away were good as well, can imagine they’d be amazing live. I hope to come back to this album, again, nick caves style isn’t easily accessible to me but this is the closest I’ve gotten and I learnt something along the way!

Nick Cave is like the uncle of all the music I listen to. I would like to find the people where Nick is the end all, be all best artist they’ve ever heard.

Interesting listen. Makes me think of a rock musical soundtrack. Lots of variation here, well composed, solid album.

Quite a few songs I really like from this one! The album felt just a little all over the place, but I enjoyed listening from start to finish. Favorites - Cannibals Hymn, Nature Boy, Breathless, Easy Money, Carry Me, O Children (recognized this one from Harry Potter movie)

weird, but pretty good overall. listened 2x. 3/5

A bit depressing. Quite liked "Hiding All Away" and "O Children".

Hienostuneen tuntuista rockia, mutta silti "raa'an" tuntuista. Tykkäsin Ghosteenista enemmän

It was fine without being special

Thé album beautifully tells a story, drawing from a wide range of references like the Orpheus myth, Ovid, Dante, and more The vocals are superb, and the instrumentation is equally impressive, making it a captivating but too long musical experience

I already know O Children and like it, this is def a genre I dont explore much though. Yea the lyrics are weird af but im having fun! Creeeeeeepy sounds going on here Its a little long

Nick Cavellekin kyllä riittää yhden levyn mitta vallan hyvin, puoltoista tuntia on jo uuvuttava massa. Onneksi välillä on kevyempiä sävellyksiä. Ja alku on vauhdikas! Kuoro ilahduttaa ja välillä jopa jouset. Mutta paljolti pitäis olla keskittymässä tarinoihin, mitä en aivan jaksa.

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus is an album that was quite a ride. It started off quite good but unfortunately fell off towards the end. The songs at the start were well done and fit well with each other and were interesting to listen to but the songs on the back half were quite forgettable. This album is decent but you can do better Best Song: Hiding All Away Worst Song: Fable of the Brown Ape

I am not at all familiar with their music even though I've heard their name in the past and at least another one of their albums has shown up before in my rotation here, so I'm glad I get the chance to hear them. Overall, I like this album. Some of the songs get real harsh to my ears, but I know that's what they're going for and it's really simply a matter of personal tendencies, tastes, and preferences. Even in those harsh tunes, I hear very skilled musicians and interesting composition and arrangements. Impressive band.

This album is decent. I much preferred The Lyre of Orpheus to Abattoir Blues; the main singer's slam poetry-esque style of mostly talking with a little singing fit the more melancholy style of The Lyre of Orpheus than the more upbeat Abattoir Blues. This singing style grew on me over the course of the album, but I still prefer regular singing over this style. I definitely thing the backup singers and especially the instrumentals carried this album though. 3/5 Favorite song: Easy Money (really exemplifies when this singing style goes right) Worst song: Hiding All Away (really exemplifies when this singing style goes wrong and the instrumental can't carry the song enough)

Ok, men synes måske bare det er lidt kedeligt

I liked it OK , 3 stars

Loves the album artwork music didn’t match-I did like the Chris Cornell similarities in voice but wouldn’t come back to it 3/5

Gut aber viel zu lang!

Very interesting, different vibes. Timeless

3/5 - 3.5/5 For Disc 1. 2.0/5 for Disc 2. I saved "Nature Boy" to my playlist to remind myself every now and then that they exist. Drummer and guitarist play well together. The whole band gives an orchestra vibe at some points, which is something i love to hear out of a band. The lyrics are nice, not life changing or new. The musicians all seem well in sync with each other. This seems like a very average album from a band of above average musicians. Some of these songs just had no business being >5 mins. And i say that as a Grateful Dead fan.

Like okay. Nick cave is supposed to be great and I guess I kind of like him but two whole albums is just too much Nick Cave at once for me. Plus one star for being profoundly weird but minus a star for possibly being pompous.

Funky,Bluesy aber hat mich irgendwie relativ kalt gelassen

Moany old men

nick cave and the bad seeds are quite the artist. definitely pretentious, but also definitely pleasant enough music! i've listened to their ghosteen album as part of this project, and i'm impressed by the range this band has. many artists don't challenge themselves in the way nick cave and the bad seeds do! in contrast, abattoir blues / the lyre of orpheus is much more lively and has a stronger beat driving the music--and there's an overall dark tone that, honestly, i'm obsessed about. like many double albums on this project, i'm left wondering why it needed to be so long, but alas.

I never quite know what to do with Nick Cave. This is very different from the other Nick Cave album I've had on this project, so I can appreciate that. But in both cases, he is just so overly dramatic, melancholy, and deep. His music is almost an exercise to listen to and leaves me feeling exhausted. All of this seems to be for the sake of "art". Fair enough, I guess, but it makes it a bit of a slog to get through. I would like to address something specific, though. Thanks to the musical Hadestown, I understood the song "The Lyre of Orpheus" quite a bit more than I probably would have otherwise. This song actually sounds like it could have come from Hadestown, as "The Lyre of Orpheus" is very bluesy and gospel-y, like Hadestown. Seeing as this song and album came before the musical, though, I wonder if this song was an inspiration for the musical? A longshot to be sure, but almost too on the nose to be coincidence. I guess this will be my little conspiracy theory.

Tending to gravitate to the second album. Favorite tracks: "The Lyre of Orpheus", "Breathless", "Supernaturally", "O Children". "Babe, You Turn Me On" does feel redundant and lesser following "Breathless". From the first: "Cannibal's Hymn" I'll almost definitely be coming back to this one, my vote may go up with more listens.

I’m not crazy about the first half, but the slower second half is awesome. I haven’t checked out much of Nick Cave’s stuff before; this is good.

Heel apart album.

Favo's: The Lyre of Orpheus, Supernaturally, Carry Me

Lot to love here but not for me

3.5/5 he's just not my type...

First Nick Cave album. Listened twice, half paying attention tbh. Not bad, not mad at it. Not a whole lot stuck out, solid record. Not inclined to return though

Nice example of blues. Preferred the tracks with backing vocals, but didn't love the 'talkier' songs.

Shouldn't be a double album, just a long LP. A lot of duff lyrics. The positives though are that I really liked some of the songs! And I can imagine they would be great live. Still a bit annoying but I like the album cover.

Despite its length, I quite enjoyed this album.

O children je super pjesma Dobar album, ali nema baš puno pjesama kojima bi se vraćala.

Never really good into Nick Cave. It’s good but just not my thing.

I only listened to the first of this dual album, one of those cases where an artist is going for something VERY specific and absolutely nailing it but it doesn’t do much for me.

quase bonitao? quase me emociona? devo ouvir mais

Pretty interesting stuff on some of these tracks. Should have been a single album though there's lots of boring tracks.

Didn’t get through it all. It wasn’t bad but didn’t stand out to me.

I think I once saw a comment on Reddit recommend this album if you're a fan of Ghost's "Meliora/Popestar" and I remember thinking that was weird. I never really vetted that claim so I'm happy to do so here. And while I don't think it's a perfect recommendation I do see the similarities. The skeletons of the two albums are somewhat alike and they share common themes and ideas but they are ultimately two different albums attempting different things. As far as this album goes I enjoyed it well enough. Too long to justify its length. I'm not sure if I prefer the front half more because I like it more or if I was just burnt out by the end. All things considered I'd listen to a few tracks again. 3

I liked some of the songs, but it does NOT justify the hour and twenty minute length.

A bit too dad-rock in the first half and not much of note in the second half. 5/10

definitely enjoyed this more than his weird spoken word one but dear god why is it so long

I really hated the last album from this guy. But this was pretty good.

Turned into a bit of a slog towards the end of play but was an enjoyable mix overall.

I will say I liked this a lot better than the last album of Nick Cave's "Murder Ballads." There's more of going for a rock style. I also liked the disparity between the 2 discs. A few times artists used to do that with two sides of their albums: have one side be harder-edged and the other side be more lighter. You can tell the difference between the two discs and what the band was going for here. I got a little tired of "The Lyre of Orpheus," even with its driving rhythm, which I liked. The "Oh Mamma" just started to get a bit too repetitive for me. I just wish Nick was a bit more... melodic. His voice isn't bad, but I wanted it to be more than it was. He was drifting more into a grunty snarl, when I wanted him to stay in tune. So much better than Murder Ballads, I just don't know if it's something I would definitely listen to day in and day out.

Inget livsavgörande, men helt ok.

I liked this album better than the other work I have heard from this artist.

Listened in 4 separate sessions, but still good

This was a long one, but I had to take a break to eat in the middle, so the length didn't affect me as much as it likely could have. I mean, it's cool, and I totally understand why people would like it, but I don't care about it very much. Not to say that it's bad or boring, but it's not something I would seek out again. My favourite song Spell, I think. The tracks blend together for me.

Переслушав его спустя почти 400 альбомов понял что не настолько плохо это было. Но долго прям, мда Алкоальбом: дед в 4 раз рассказывает и ты уже поддакиваешь (вы пьете вино 2 час)

Nick Cave is usually a weird but pretty good time.

Good, cool, relaxed

Poetic. Not bad.

Not as engaging as I hoped it would be

They had me in the first half, I'm not gonna lie. But the second half wasn't nearly as exciting. I do like this better than other Nick Cave stuff I've listened to.

I have tried to like Nick Cave for years. His music isn't horrible, but it isn't particularly enjoyable to me. It sounds like very basic, Brit rock.

It was just all around a nice, pleasant listen.

5/19, 26%

So this is Gothic Rock, huh? Always nice to eb able to put a name to a genre I know. Nick Cave was interesting to learn about, as is a lot of Australian music. Not fully my deal but iconic for what it is. A double album is always appreciated.

Would listen to it again

Not sure what I expected from this. I've heard a lot about Nick Cave but never actually heard the music. It was interesting. Kinda big in a way that I didn't expect. Very theatrical and complex. It was a little long (I love a double album, but still). Overall, I'm into it. Standouts: Get Ready for Love, Messiah Ward, There She Goes, My Beautiful World, Easy Money

banco! 7/10

Not terrible for a Nick Cave album. What the absurd excess of Nick Cave albums on this list has taught me, is that Nick Cave spans the range from awful and generic to not so bad after all. 3 lyres out of 5 𓏢𓏢𓏢

This dude gothic af. His voice makes me wish it was raining but the music has a somewhat sunny vibe to it. There she goes, my beautiful world and Let the Bells Ring are my faves. 1st side > 2nd side. Overall has some jams but also some duds. 3 stars.

I liked the first half more than the second, some of the more ballady tracks towards the end dragged on. Some of it was so fucking good - like Let The Bell Ring. But some it was so bad I had to skip - wtf was the Fable of the Brown Ape?

Pretty good album. weird but good music. natureboy meta

Didn't think much of the first half but the second half was great. May listen to this more

Ah, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. These guys have a special place in my heart. And now they've done it again with their double album, Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus. This Australian punk rocker turned gothic crooner has been churning out dark and brooding albums for decades, and this one is no exception. Abattoir Blues kicks off with the propulsive and ominous "Get Ready for Love," which sets the tone for the album's blend of gospel, blues, and rock. The title track is a blistering rocker that shows off Cave's fiery vocals and his band's tight musicianship. Meanwhile, The Lyre of Orpheus takes a more restrained approach, with ballads like "Breathless" and "Carry Me" showcasing Cave's emotional range. The album also features guest appearances from vocalists like Kylie Minogue and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, adding a touch of pop sensibility to the proceedings. Overall, Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus is a testament to Nick Cave's singular vision and his band's versatility. It's a must-listen for fans of alternative rock and gothic music, and a solid entry point for those new to Cave's oeuvre.

Wow this was so much better than The Birthday Party. Real Tom Waits energy. Had it on in the background which maybe helped. I’d like to listen to it again more closely. As of now a high 3.

Love Nick Cave but this is only good.

I liked this best I think among the Nick Cave offerings so far, probably because it is less stentoriously committed to the whole Roots Gothic thing which palls quickly for me. Still plenty of that stuff though. I cant deny smart lyrics and good musicianship, so I guess it's a taste thing.

Really impressive musically but not something I feel I need to go back to.

ну так chilly....... и вообщем не супер вау нормально, пойдет

Bit angry for me. Prefer his more melodic stuff.

3/5 Not too bad but a little too raspy

It’s obligatory to dance to the last track, and then say - “you’re a wizard ‘arry”

This is definitely good singer/songwriter album

That was fine

Kinda boring

3.5/5 Standouts: The Lyre of Orpheus Others: Hiding All Away, Messiah Ward, There She Goes, Nature Boy, Abattoir Blues, Let the Bells Ring, Breathless, Babe You Turn Me On,

It’s a good listen. Nothing has caught my attention specifically but I like the overall sound. This is an artist whose influence I have heard expressed in a lot of 2nd generation punks “maturing” into their older selves and doing solo efforts. Instead of doing rockabilly (for good or ill) like the first gen, they do desert soundscape murder songs. It is both praise and an indictment of the tendencies. Will listen to more Nick Cave w/ or w/o his Bad Seeds.

this was another artist i had never heard of so i went into the album not really sure what to expect. it was pretty good although i do feel as if it went on for far too long but i think that is because it is two albums in one. i also think that this is a very front-loaded album and i found myself enjoying the first songs a lot more than the last songs. my favorite tracks were: Cannibal’s Hymn, There She Goes My Beautiful World, Nature Boy, The Lyre of Orpheus (which is my favorite song, may be because it’s good or because i like the story of orpheus and eurydice, you decide), and O Children. a good album, i think i would probably enjoy it more on a second listen.

Vähän pitkänpuoleinen, mutta Nick Caven taattua laatua. Nipsaisen kuitenkin yhden tähden pois. 3/5

Not a bad album but definitely feels like a niche rock/punk/songwriter mix. The instrumentals are pretty good and provide a daunting and forceful sound. The album is a bit long as it’s a double album. I don’t dislike it but I don’t think I’d revisit many songs if any. 6.1/10

Ideas the size of boulders with music to match its to band the writing is only paper thin. Stretching this to a double album made it an even longer experience than it needed to be.

Like a goth Bowie. A lot better than the durges album.

Album was decent, Nick’s voice is a bit annoying and the album was very long but the instrumentation from the Bad Seeds was great. My personal enjoyment: 6/10 Need to be on this list: 8/10

This was way too long, About an album too long. I enjoyed the first album - some nice tunes, and interesting arrangements. But if anyone tells you how great a lyricist Cave is, just remember that here he rhymes ‘hysteria’ with ‘wisteria’. The second album dragged in comparison, and was the more sombre mood I expect from Mr Cave. Didn’t mind the first set, but it's no 'Junkyard’.

Need to listen back. Wasn’t really focus.

Cet album aurait vraiment dû me plaire, il me semble que c'est exactement mon genre, mais il m'a laissée assez froide. Je reconnaissais la qualité, mais sans plus. Peut-être était-ce dû à mon état d'esprit d'hier.

Fine I like Nick Cave. You want a cookie.

у меня было хуже впечатление о Нике Кейве! это норм!

some good stuff - There She Goes, My Beautiful World; Nature Boy; Breathless; Supernaturally but also some not so good stuff - Cannibal's Hymn; Fable of the Brown Ape (what the heck was this) average at best. 3+/5

Helt bra, kanske om man lyssnade några gånger till skulle det bli ännu bättre men det har jag inte gjort. Lyssnande på disk 1 & 2 separat, skulle antagligen ha blivit ganska långt annars

Bra men lite långt

Pretty tonally similar throughout. Dark gospel starts cool, gets boring.

I always get tricked when I see "Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds". Cool name, I will like this--never make it through full song let alone album. Voice is interesting, music is interesting and fits with vocal but most lyrics are overwrought.

His name as well as the band's plus the fact that Kylie Minogue loves him make me think I should too. I don't. I did like the didgeridoo in the background of Cannibal's Hymn. Messiah Ward was a good groove but I think his vocal chops could be better. I know he's got a voice but it was a bit too talky (and not in a Tom Waits intriguing kind of way). There She Goes, My Beautiful World - I liked the lyrics but Nick's singing turned this too showoffy This album was too long and I ran out of steam even trying to review the rest of the album. meh. But I decided to give it another shot bc Andre thinks it’s right up my alley and this morning I walked into the kitchen and heard There She Goes and I liked it. A fickle review indeed

Just a few quite interesting tracks to me, I'm indifferent to most of it

Having never heard this album before I was expecting something closer in tone to Murder Ballads and that's definitely not what this is, much brighter and more hopeful in tone than you'd expect. Cave is brilliant as are the rest of the band but I don't think they are at their best doing this kind of work.

Listened to on 9/27/22 3/5 Favorite song: o children, let the bells ring Don’t judge an album by its cover cause this album was not as peaceful as I thought it would be but it was good and easy to listen to

3.5 if I could. I haven’t ever really taken the time to listen to nick cave, but this is like… all the angsty indie kids got old then went to a chill festival together. I like it, but not excessively so

Good album I will revisit

Seems OK - less challenging for me than the other stuff I've heard. Still not my lane by any distance

ikkje heilt overbevist

First the good. It's Nick Cave, it does all the Nick Cave things, and it feels like it's revitalised somewhat after a period of slow and poetic stuff, this goes bigger. However, it does little new with the formula, and the coming of Grinderman feels necessary to reboot what he does. Everything is here, but at this point, I feel like I needed something new, rather than more in a similar vein.

Generally speaking I’m not a fan but I actually quite enjoyed this album so a surprising 3*

Strange one to rate. Its better than some albums that I've given this score to but I'm rating it in relation to other Nick Cave albums and I don't think its his best...

Thought it was ok, I understand the appeal. Would take me more listens to get into it though.

Heavier than I anticipated, but pleasing and heartfelt.

Es bueno, pero un poco me aburrió. De todas formas, está para escuchar al estilo Tom Waits

Not for me but can see why this album would be influential. Great storytelling.

Ah, another one I already own! I recall being impressed with this whilst a university student. Gave it another spin on the stereo in service of this app and it's...fine. I've moved to a position where I feel Cave in general is a touch overrated, and this album doesn't quite shift the dial in any appreciable way.

Super intense, I almost can't handle his particular brand of intensity, especially 2 hrs worth.

I like the female backup singers throughout the record, and he is certainly a talented lyricist, but nothing particularly grabs me here. Not sure I understand the need for this to be an hour and 22 minute double album either.

I get why people would be into Nick Cave, but on it's own it's not what I wanna listen to. It's Diet Tom Waits for me. Also way to fucking long.

I'm not usually a big Nick Cave fan (except for the song "Red Right Hand"!) but I thought this was a pretty good album. I did like the first part better as they were "rockier" songs but the quieter stuff was ok too.

Meh. I must be missing something about this guy because I don’t see what is outstanding here. It’s certainly way better than his punk band’s album but that’s not really saying much. The second disc is better than the first. He also sounds like Eddie Vedder to me.

I thought I knew this man/band, but I guess I didn't? There were a lot of song were I was wondering, “wtf did I just listen to,” but not completely in a bad way. Still wishing there were explanation for why certain albums/artists made the list.

Een dubbel album waarvan ik deel 1 een stuk beter vind dan deel 2. Iets steviger, en atypischer voor Nick.

first listen i just can't connect with this band

Out of the gate, great energy and style. I just wish the lead vocals would convey the same energy and emotion. Such a grating voice makes this a tedious listen. Plus for songwriting, instrumentation, and performances - I really want to like this but the vocals are keeping me from rating this higher. It already sounds like goofy villian music, why not lean into that and emote? Standouts: Nature Boy, Spell

Wait, how did Harry and Hermione dance to this last song in 1997 if it didn't come out until 2004? 6/10. I was pleasantly surprised that this wasn't a mopey snoozefest like the other Nick Cave album I've heard, but I can't say I liked more than the occasional song, and most of the songs I liked still went on too long.

I like art rock that can keep me interested, again some solid bass lines here.

Not bad and not really my taste but a decent listen.

Good! Except that it is long and a little dark in some places. No pun to Mr Cave.

Ik ben niet zo lyrisch als de rest, maar heb ook geen volledige afkeer zoals Anke. Ik kies dus voor de gulden middenweg.

Its an interesting concept and I like it a lot better than the last Nick Cave album that was generated for me (Release The Bats). Has some great soul vibes and don't mind the gospel references too. That being said it musically felt the same for a lot of it, which over a double album for someone who isn't that familiar with Nick Cave, gets a bit tedious.

A new one to me. Nothing really grabbed me, but it was good overall

Not the best Bad Seeds album.

It's 80 minutes long, but it wasn't an exhausting listen. Of course, that's because I listened to it in two sittings, one per disc. It's pretty dumb, but I figured it's easier that way. However, it only felt appropriate not because it's a double album, but because the two discs have a clear distinction to each other. "Abattoir Blues" is quite enjoyable. I loge the gothic undertones and the Tom Wait-sy energy. It sometimes gives me a Celtic folk rock vibe. While "The Lyre of Orpheus" is as poetic as its title. It also has the Tom Wait-sy vibes, in fact, it's stronger here. The sound is stripped down and most of the punch comes from the lyrics and the way it is delivered. Overall, fascinating at its best. It can be boring, but it's not annoying.

I was happy to see this pop up. I was sad to listen to it. This kind of amorphous storytelling doesn't do it for me. Enough about the wisteria...

I'm not the greatest Nick Cave fan but there were quite a few golden moments across this album. I probably won't delve any deeper but now I know there are some good albums to put on in the background

I enjoyed - although not sure if the messages of murder and misogyny are real?

I like Nick Cave, but I don't necessarily enjoy this much Nick Cave.

I've enjoyed other albums of his more... A double album is a lot to ask.

i simply do not like this man’s voice and that cannot be helped.

3.6 - Downtempo white gospel delivered with a smoldering baritone. Songs in a minor key, with simple chord structures, punctuated by a choir to reinforce a lyrical line. Words that seem to be lifted from the Bible. The consistency of this aesthetic through the course of this album’s 72 minutes gives it a gravitas though a few songs in, it definitely sounds same-y. By the end, the performance borders on schtick. I waiver a lot on my feelings towards Nick Cave sometimes thinking he’s brilliant but often feeling like he’s severely overrated as an icon of chic artistry. For me, this record is one that falls more in that latter description.

Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (2004) High praise for the lyrics: The themes are not theologically squeamish, and the poetry is just ambiguous enough to invite whatever your worldview into the passenger seat for a joyride. And it’s a nice musical ride, with dirty textures, plenty of dynamic variation, and better than average female-heavy backing vocals. These singers provide an essential function, because Nick Cave’s lead vocals sound like Dick Shawn, which is to say they’re not very good. Some of these tracks could have used orchestral backing (“Supernaturally” and “Carry Me” point in the right direction, but even they could be improved). His attempt to channel Leonard Cohen (“Messiah Ward”, and several other tracks here) is less than convincing, but a good effort nonetheless. It’s always nice to emulate the masters, even if the results are a bit disappointing. But the music weaves in and out with passable rock progressions and stylings, although the studio recording lacks separation, resulting in a flat sound that tries to generate a small venue feel. It doesn’t work. Where’s Brian Eno when you need him? “There She Goes, My Beautiful World” is highly referential and poetically nice, but unmelodic and arranged like a Broadway cast production (think “Hair” or “Jesus Christ Superstar”). It seems like it’s caught in the wrong millennium. The two (!) title tracks “Abattoir Blues” and “The Lyre of Orpheus” are of special interest, because they are well crafted and thought provoking, best appreciated for their lyrical content—certainly not for musical excellence. “Abattoir Blues” is a pessimistic lament over the sad state of the world’s regrettable “evolutionary trajectory” and the protagonist’s sad attempt to be what his lover needs. “Orpheus” provides a grim take on the story of the legendary Thracian bard, whose musical instrument is, in this case, violently destructive, with birds detonating and bunnies dashing out their brains, even to the point of causing the death of his beloved Eurydice, and pissing off God in the process. The underworld in this version becomes a haven for Orpheus and Eurydice to raise a large family. But, she screams, “If you play that f***ing thing down here I’ll stick it up your orifice”. Very interesting. “Easy Money” is a doleful dirge about how money that grows on trees has attendant characteristics that result in rhetorically sodomitic horror. This too is something to ponder. One could learn to like this album, but will take several listens. 3/5

That was better than I thought it would be, and longer than it should have been. 6-minute songs mean that these guys couldn't edit.

Solid, but not really my thing

not really sure how to rate this honestly, some of the songs were really good, others i just didnt get. giving this a 3 as a baseline, i guess.

Didn't love this, not my genre. Lots of pretty songwriting but the instrumental and production loses me.

Very cool. I like how the vibe of the music changed several times throughout. Thought it was interesting and would listen again.

Needs second listen

Has a sound like Muse. Good alternative record. Don't see myself adding this to my regular rotation.

This is a hard one. I liked it but at the same time it felt like a real chore to get through. Why did this have to be a double album? Feels like it's two separate albums just smashed together for fun. This is my second Nick Cave album and my previous opinion was low and this album improved it a bit. It's much more bearable this time around and it's certainly listenable to. But again, it's way too damn long. If it was split into two albums I'd probably like it a lot more.

Starts in a more rock’n’roll manner than I was prepared for, but a nice but long album.

This requires a second listen.

I get a chance to listen to Nick Cave, he is not a favourite artist of mine .

Alright

First song had me thinking I was going to hate this entire album but it wasn't that bad.

Carry Me is a great song but the album is sometimes a lot.

Some lovely melodies and lyrics but I find Cave's voice a little too 'showy' to fully lose myself. Will revisit

Oddly sparse for a double album, but I always love Nick Cave’s delivery and lyricism. 5/10

Half Bad-Seeds-Do-Vegas, half heartfelt. Better than I remembered.

Not bad

Ok, music was enjoyable, still not a fan of Nick Cave’s vocals

Top notch dad rock

Should be played loud.

Second Listen. Very good album. Their sound is growing on me. Standouts: Hiding All Away. Messiah Ward, Abattoir Blues, Let the Bells Ring, The Lyre of Orpheus,

Not bad. A bit long winded and poetic for me, but a couple really cool tracks.

Mageita viboja ajoittain ja meikäläisen tuotannossa olis puolet biiseistä tippunut pois.

Not bad to listen to, but probably wouldn't put it on again.

Rock, historiefortælling, dystert
