Reviews (page 3 of 7)

Rock escocés, parecido a Rolling.

I was initially not at all into this, but there was a big turn around after the first song. By the end I was really digging it. The song Next was on the Scott Walker album we listened to on this list. I didn't like Walker's version, but Alex Harvey's was campy AF and it worked for me. Vambo Marble Eye was just a straight up banger. I would for sure listen to this again.

I’ve always rejected The Sensational Alex Harvey Band because of their name. What, is this Stan Lee’s band? But I’ll admit it, this is solid glam rock. Not on Roxy Music’s level, but there’s def some good stuff here. Catchy with solid performances. B-

Swampsnake - really vibrant opening track. Reminded me of Alice Cooper 🤣 Gang Bang - weird but good. AC/DC type lyrics Faith Healer - shite lyrics, great music. Giddy Up - Reminded me of Slade and The Sweet. Crap album filler Next - mad song. Thought I was listening to fiddler on the roof 😄 Vambo - 5/5 Teenage Idols - 1/5 It's a genre bending album. Deserves it's 4 star

Completely over the top and musically all over the place, proper tonic to the blandness of U2. Sounded like glam rock, classic rock, gypsy punk, and (slightly reggae) soul at various points, bit mad but very interesting. Definitely want to hear more. Wouldn't give it a five as I wasn't completely sold on any particular part of it but very glad it came up.

This is an insane record. Gang Bang is an earworm. The theatricality of Next is brilliant. The guy's voice is good. It sounds decades ahead of its time. Pretty exhausting, and I'm not sure that I'd like to re-listen, but goodness me this is good.

I don't much care for the Family Feud or Steve Harvey's comedy. More importantly, superlatives are red flags. Anyone calling themselves "Specials" or "Thrills" rarely live up to their names so I wasn't expecting anything 'sensational' from this band that I'd never heard of. But I gotta say, this one surprised me. It was distinct in ways many albums have not bee lately. It sounded like an AC/DC inspired precursor to Louis XIV. It's dirty and terribly oversexualized lyrics intended to impress or disgust audiences, and easily split listeners down the middle. "Sensational," no. Provocative, yes.

very good, i'm a fan of classic rock so this is right up my street

pleasantly surprised by this. A hidden gem.

+1 for discovery

High energy, fun album. Rock and roll with an eclectic twist of keyboard and string instruments. The lead singer is a kooky dude.

4/5. A heavier than expected album full of awesome riffs. Some of the lyrics, sure a little iffy, but I have a feeling that might have been the point? Alex really defines the sound, kind of like a Scottish Tim Buckley. I can see the influence this album provided to bands like Black Midi today, and it does hold up in my opinion. It's weird and seedy, but goes hard in almost every song. Next... arguably my favorite song on the album.

I didnt know you but i like you👍

Really cool lively mix of rock and blues. Enjoyed

Classic rock with some swagger, adding horns and such as well

Olipa hyvä uus tuttavuus! Erityisesti avausraita huikea. 4/5

Like it!

While I can't review this without calling out "Gang Bang" for being depraved, I also can't deny I was taken by the flamboyance, compositions, and performances of Alex Harvey and His Sensational Band. There are comparisons to make to Bon Scott and AC/DC — though Harvey and company were here first — and these guys took this music to different extremes. It's brazen — that's part of the recipe — and it's also inventive and Harvey takes chances, he doesn't play it safe. Lots of chuckling as this played, you've got to take a lot of this with a wry smile. But at the end of it all, this was one that I had to tip my hat to.

Totally surprised me. Though there is clearly nothing high brow here, the style seems like a Bon Scott / Slade feel with some catchy rock songs. There's only 7 tracks, but all of them hold their own, with Next being my favorite, though Faith Healer, Swampsnake and even Gang Bang are entertaining. Though the lyrics may be stuck in a different time, I definitely enjoyed the album.

You hear the same craziness Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention displayed, with the same sometimes crude lyrics, but musically a little more punk-avant-la-lettre, combined with hard- and bluesrock in the mix. An artist that influenced quite a few of my musical heroes, so I'm glad to have finally listened to this album, and it was surprisingly awesome.

This was definitely an oddball listen that ranged from blues to hard rock to glam and cabaret. At one point I thought a song could be a Maiden B-Sode, and at another it felt almost Floydian. All around I enjoyed the listen and went back for a repeat to make sure I didn't miss anything. Songs were interesting and unique with some solid production to back it up. Only thing I outright hated was the deliberate play with stereo on the final track. With headphones on it just made me feel uncomfortable. This is one borders the 3/4 line but I'll nudge.

Some raunchy rock for sure. Kind of the same style as Alice Cooper. Faith Healer was a really cool song, I don't know if that is because the instrumentals were really good or because it was minimal singing by him. He still tries to sneak in some real creep lyrics. There were some pretty cool southern rock type in here too especially in Vambo Marble Eye. The first two songs made me scared for this album but it really turned around after that. This style of music is kind of right up my alley. This started off as a 2, but then was fluttering between a 3 and 4, so I will round up cause its the holidays.

I have no clue what I was expecting to hear but it wasn't that. Wild songs and seem pretty ahead of it's time. Definitely thought that was Black Sabbath in that last song. not sure how often I'll come to this 3.5 but I gotta round up for just being original af.

Weird. But not in a bad way.

Mix aus Glam Rock und Blues, I like

What a sensational album. Going through every archetype of the decade that was and would be the 1970s. Before punk invaded the UK these guys were writing songs about gang bangs and soft shoe bananas. Sensational just about says it all frankly.

This is an absolute FEAST for the ears. I’m getting like, ozzy vocal intonation with Tony Iommi guitar, but like this Broadway level performance one moment, classic/psych rock the next, experimental rock after that. All of this should not work but the cohesiveness of Alex’s voice and vision keeps this together. It’s amazing how much he is able to explore in a single album and not make it sound like mush or confusing. Update- just realized this whole thing is about sex addiction (?).

Hard rock sententero. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Alex Harvey had a great rock n' roll voice and his version of "Next" is one of the best vocal performances I've heard, certainly the most theatrical. The overall sound is gritty, greasy & glammy and with 2 songs about gangbangs on a 7 song LP you know it will attract a certain kind of crowd. The long songs aren't worth the extra investment, but the others rock. A nice snapshot of 1973.

Highly enjoyable, put a smile on my face, despite some of the lyrics and themes being slightly simplistic or creepy!

acutally suprisingly fun and nice album to listen to

The English response to Iggy Pop (or just their own version of it, at circa same time), which in my opinion checks all the boxes that Iggy didn't. It's fun, original, not that straightforward, with some great guitar solos and a plethora of other instruments. Really nice album, I'm pretty ashamed I have never heard of Alex Harvey before!

Solid. Dark themes. Harmonica. Story telling 4

Has some moments of great guitar. A bit odd ball at times. Overall a good listen if unexpected

Some good classic rock riffs and grooves in this album. Lyrics are a little bit ridiculous for most songs (as if Steel Panther released an album in the 70s), but rock shouldn't take itself too seriously. I enjoyed listening to this one.

I enjoyed well enough this the first time I listened to it, so I listened to it again and I enjoyed it even more. Harvey's delivery and (judging from the album cover) sense of style obviously influenced AC/DC. Good stuff.

What a fun listen! This is like a mix of Alice Cooper & T. Rex with a dash Iggy Pop & Sparks. These guys definitely have a flair for dramatics & clever lyrics. I stumbled upon this band earlier this year & watched a few of their live performances - what a treat. This band knows how to put on a show. Easy 4 starts.

Only one listen so far and first reaction is 70’s Tenacious D. Music is good and the lyrics seem to be fun and silly.

What the fuck. This was so stupid and entertaining at the same time.

It’s a rule of thumb that countries that include the word democratic in its name rarely is exactly that. The same goes for superlatives and band name (I’m especially looking at you Incredible Bongo Band). Alex Harvey seems to be one of the exceptions. You can clearly hear how much fun everyone had recording this and furthermore how this must have inspired several early post-punk outlets. It’s charming, over the top, perhaps a bit too silly at times - and Alex Harvey sounds incredibly charismatic. It loses some momentum in the middle, but the start and ending is high octane and just a lot of fun.

Been meaning to hear more or these/him for some time. Only seen Next on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Quite liked liked it, very pleasantly surprised. High 3 low 4 me thinks.

23rd September 2033 Listened on the Thursday after cos of catching up on everything. I loved this, hard blues mixed with Genesis like whimsy.

There's nothing like a gangbang to blow away the blues!

Hard rock. Interesante.

Another clearly vital and seminal act I wasn't really aware of before. Not a huge fan of the vocal style, and a lot of the lyrics barrel past transgressive into pure self-parody, though maybe intentionally. The music is fantastic though.

Never heard of this guy. Quite an entertaining listen, though I think I prefer Scott Walker's version of "Next", and I'd be tempted to dock a star for "Gang Bang" although Abba's "Arrival" has just come up on the list too, and it has a whole song about kissing a teacher. The 70s, man. Absolutely uncivilized time period. 🫣 Fave track - "Swampsnake" was fun!

Rock escocés, parecido a Rolling

Against my own better judgement and the outright jouvenile nature of side A of this album, it won be over by the end. I actually didn't want it to end! It could have been 10-15 minutes longer, something I don't say lightly after nearly 950 of these albums.

Violently horny. I mean, for fuck's sake, it has a song called "Gang Bang" on it. The performances are electric, and despite being a bit repetitive in spots, it just scratches that dumb-caveman glam rock itch really well. Favorite tracks: "Giddy Up A Ding Dong", "The Faith Healer"

Very surprised by this. I do not love his voice, but this is a diverse and unique album that feels really raw and genuine.

Bäst: "Giddy Up A Ding Dong"

Sensationally Super Seventies...I loved it

What a ride! A bit off-putting and surely ridiculous, but it's worth the experience.

Pretty cool

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Never heard of Alex Harvey and sad to see he died relatively young. Album was quirky enough to keep my attention in a field of forgettable generic Brit-pop that the editor's decided to include. 3.5/5 but rounding up to a 4 because I fell like I may give this another spin in the future.

Oh it was a silly fun time. Not very substantial though. The Faith Healer and Next were standouts to me.

not bad at all

Nice rock/blues

Love this guy's voice, love the instruments too. Faith Healer and Ding Dong being kind of meh just barely keep this out of 5 star territory for me. 4.5/5 FS: all the other songs

This was fun, but the second half started to drag, and I started losing interest while listening.

I was expecting something corny. I was not expecting Gang Bang. This is witty, theatrical and original. But it’s actually just musically GOOD. Totally see how this was a formative influence for Nick Cave. the blues, the classic rock n roll and cabaret intertwined in here which contextualise it for its time period; but still a very original sounding record.

Not my preferred type of rock, but it's solid overall, there's little to complain about here. I doubt I'll come back to it much, but it's always nice to learn something new. Favourite track: The Faith Healer

-interesting! not really my kind of music but i enjoy the energy and weird 70s edginess. apparently AC/DC were heavily inspired by these guys, i can definitely see it but i actually prefer Alex Harvey Band -sometimes it’s hard for me to take songs like this seriously but if anything it’s really funny. solid 3 stars -Favorites: Swampsnake, The Faith Healer

- Not a band I am familiar with, but it is clear how this must have been an influence in glam rock. - Highs and lows. Almost every song comes off as sexually coded, but the sheer audacity of releasing a song called "Gang Bang" in 1973. Wow. - Did not care for "Next." Get the cabaret influence, but it is not my thing.

Has their ever been a front-man with the overwhelming belief in his abilities as Alex Harvey? Alas, while some tracks rocked and linked the worlds of Glam Rock and Heavy Metal, other tracks were dire and self-delusional.

Sooo that was a thing. He's like Meatloaf but instead of rock opera it's rock porn.

A hybrid of sleazy glam and equally sleazy prog with a sprinkling of sleazy cabaret. I quite enjoyed the glam bits, while also thinking I might need a shower afterwards.

Only really liked 2 tracks of this album, other than them I didn't like the album

It’s ok

Music was surprisingly good - though lyrics were awful and juvenile. Not sure what to make of this.

The wildest thing for me about Alex Harvey's sensational band is that it took off when he was almost forty, and the other members were fifteen years younger. The main thing, guys, is to stay young at heart! As for the album — well, it's glam rock, glam rock. With a few cabaret elements and the bright costumes and clown makeup used in concert, but overall, nothing fancy. Alex's voice isn't very pleasant, but this is compensated for by the overall upbeat nature of the songs. I especially liked the way the keyboards sound, as if a young Elton John had been placed at the piano. I suggest you ignore the lyrics; almost all of them are typical of the genre — "Going to a woman's for a gangbang" and all that. The groundwork for the hairy glam metal of the '80s was already being laid here. I also suspect that this band heavily inspired AC/DC and, specifically, Bon Scott.

Like a x rated honky tonk cabaret

If you don't listen to the lyrics it's pretty fun.

I enjoyed the music but not really the lyrics

I had to check the lyrics in disbelief frequently on this one. Kind of an AC/DC does a theatrical glam rock album. Won't be digging back into this one but it was freaky and fun for a listen.

Tough what to make of this album. Sonically, it is a great blues rock album with some great guitar and piano that feels like old J Geils Band. Lyrically it fits more in line with Spinal Tap. But was a fun listen. Hard to beat tracks that are titled "The Gang Bang" and "Giddy Up a Ding Dong" Highlights: "Swampsnake" and "Vambo Marble Eye"

This was an interesting one, very all over the place. Enjoyed "Giddy Up A Ding Dong" and "Next" the most, the rest was okay.

AC/DC did it better

Rating: 7/10 I actually really liked this and thought it was good, dare I say underrated. It can be a bit silly and absurd and not always work but also a lot of fun. I didn't like Giddy Up and Vambo Marble Eye as much but the rest I actually enjoyed. I don't know if it's for the 4 bucket though

This veers between a 1 and a 5 at times. I get there was a certain vaudeville element to their music but while I thought both Swampsnake and The Faith Healer were great, some of the other tracks were embarrassingly bad schock-rock. It probably deserves a 3, but there is nothing moderate about this album, if you unreservedly like it, I fear for your wellbeing.

Some interesting lyrics on this one

Ok platta. Tycker inte det drar iväg uppåt rejält. Långa låtar utan att det riktigt håller. Blir iaf inte sugen på mer.

Starts off strong but unfortunately I kinda lost it towards the end. 6/10

7 / 10

2.5 stars. In your face glam rock. Decent but not my cup of tea.

Overall Rating - 2.79/5 (5.57/10). I don't know if I'd call them "spectacular," but the Alex Harvey Band is at least good.

Dumb, dumb album saved from collapsing under its own stupidity by fantastic riffs and crisp production.

Initially this felt a curious mix of Suzi Quattro and the Faces. The first two tracks have that pub rock approach: piano, blues, upbeat tempo, a bit of cheek. It is on the more enjoyable end of bar-room rock, especially with the great barrelhouse piano. Settling in for a decent romp, I almost spat my hot cocoa out at track three, 'The Faith Healer', starting off like a disorientating 'Can' loop into PiL energy, with a John Lydon warble. It's quite the bonkers album. It's pub rock (taking from rock n roll), mixed with theatre and cabaret, prog-rock, soft rock, doo wop, rock opera. Basically take rock and add other words to it. In truth the album's a three, although if I could give higher marks for effort I would.

Alex Harvey walked so CupcaKke could run Would be better if there was a music video or live version bc I think its missing a pretty essential visual aspect. Pretty average, not bad, not particularly good. 5/10

2.7 2x unremarkable

Well that certainly was interesting

Medio country rock medio Elvis nose

Interesting album with ‘Big’ vocals

There’s some interesting and quite strange elements to Alex Harvey’s performance. I like it when singers see themselves as entertainers and want to do what they can to surprise. My favourite songs are the highly energetic and more reckless ones like Swampsnake. I’m less excited hearing him put surreal and subversive lyrics to more traditional and inoffensive music but it still adds to the admirable element of fun which is threaded throughout the album. Perhaps not sensational but pretty entertaining.

Today’s does less for me but i enjoyed the more theatrical moments and he has a hell of a voice, low 3 for me

Musically I quite enjoyed it. Lyrically, more than a little juvenile. But overall, a decent early-70s curio I'm glad I listened to.

Giddy up a ding dong is an instant classic that makes you think. I thank Mr. Harvey for saying what needed to be said

This had some cool tracks - it was very theatrical in some ways which was interesting.

I guess parts of it were sensational

Yeah, fine. Stand-outs - Swampsnake

Random thoughts: * WTF was going on in Scotland in the early 70s? * this band sounds totally made up to begin with. * The lyrical content is something. Hang Bang and Next I’m looking at you. * I can hear the influence on AC/DC and I can also hear glam rock in here. * I don’t hate it but I’m not sure I’m allowed to like it either. Just a totally strange album overall. * thanks 1001 for expanding my horizons one again even if into more questionable territory

kinda fun

Sounds pretty good. Lyrics are pretty lousy, but luckily for me I think the music is more important.

I liked this more than I thought I would. The songs were pretty catchy, but The Faith Healer kind of started to get boring.

Mediocre kategoriaan taas menee.

weer isch er sött ich ihn kenne? mh en schott glamrock ok. aint nothing like a gangbang to blow my blues away okay ookay ähm i guess?? ich weiss nöd obs das heisst wos heisst? he finds easy langwilig afoch so rock n roll nüt speziells. er sing okay d band tönt okay hmm. chli entüschend. bi giddy up a ding dong singter etz afoch 3 minute de titel und s fühlt sich ah als wärs viel länger. bi next verzellter chli gschicht und me ghört meeeega sin akzent finds noice. glaub es 3 wirds scho anebringe. vambo marble eye no cool und nöd so basic rock n roll mit chli stimmig.

Sensational is probably overstating it, but quite an enjoyable blast.

This was certainly some kind of glam rock something.

Wild crazy out there. I kinda dug it.

I thought this was pretty decent hard rock or whatever. You can see how this fits in with other acts of the time, Zeppelin, etc. Was pretty good.

This album was a lot of fun. Sleezy rock with sleezy lyrics. Doesn't take itself seriously, but it does rock pretty hard. I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Probably won't listen again.

I feel bad about saying it, but I sort of liked this. Fun, big noise, ignore the lyrics.

3- Stars (7/15)

I was preparing myself for something rough based on the global review scores here, but this was good. This definitely takes the subject matter to the extreme to the point of parody. The songs are fun and go interesting places the especially The Faith Healer and the three part The Last Of The Teenage Idols. A fun time overall. Favorites were Seampsnake, The Faith Healer, and Vambo Marble Eye

Listens: 3 Standout tracks: Gang Bang, Next, The Last Of The Teenage Idols Well that was certainly something. I don't think I've ever heard anyone sing about a gang bang before, especially in 1973. Talk about progressive. Sure, orgies and sex and probably concepts like free love have been around since the dawn of human civilization, but to sing about it on an album in 1973. :obama-not-bad-face: What exactly is a "swampsnake"? A metaphor for something or a literal snake found in the swamp (apparently there is a genus of snake found in the Southeastern US called a Black Swampsnake). Overall, it was a fun album, but one i don't think I will be listening to beyond the day.

Idk wtf the lyrics are but the music is banger

Interesting...

Based purely off the music, I really quite enjoyed this. Somewhere between punk rock and boogie-woogie, but plenty going on. I'm not really listening to the lyrics while I'm listening at work, and based off what others are saying that's probably for the best. The same goes for the fact I listen on headphones in the office. Sheesh.

Irriteerde me ontzettend aan de shaker in the faith healer.

How many men?

This album is goofy as fuck but I enjoyed it. Definitely a product of 70s, I liked the blues rock throughout this album. Unfortunately it does not reach the high bar that the track Swampsnake sets again

First time listen Didn't expect raunchy blues rock going off of the album art but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Pretty short with a decent variety, seems like the vocals might have been an inspiration for Geordie Greep. He probably shouldn't have said all of that on "Next" though. Favorite tracks: Swampsnake, Next Least fav: Gang bang 3.5/5

Lots of bits make you think about other bands. If I walked into a bar and they were playing, I'd be delighted.

Felt very Rocky Horror

Bawdy, raunchy, what's not to love? It was Rocky Horror-licious!

Sounded like they were realy having fun, ig. Very theatrical most of the songs. This is not a bad thing for me, but the whole album felt pretty uncoherent, each song was doing its own business, without much keeping them togheter.

this was 70s ppls experimental kpop. 3.5/5 I appreciate how weird and loud it was but I'm not sure if I'd listen again, a lot of the instrumentals felt too grating and repetitive. I liked next the most

↓ There are multiple year-long gaps on this guy's page. Someone revived this project to drop the dreaded enward bomb, which obviously wasn't the guy who originally picked the project name. (This review is part of a highly autistic spergwar on the page of someone using a common word for their project name. If you are reading this on the album page dispose of this information NOW. YOU HAVE SEEN NOTHING.)

They definitely get weird with it, especially with the vocals. There are some pretty good riffs to be found and overall it's a fun listen. Favorite track: The Last of the Teenage Idols

Raucous, theatrical bursts built from chunky glam-rock riffs, swaggering bass, pounding drums, and over-the-top, character-driven vocals launch this hard rock album with punch and personality, but it moves like a stage show that opens with fireworks and quickly runs out of sparks—initially gripping, then noticeably tired as the spectacle repeats itself without fresh momentum.

The music is good, but the lyrics are cringeworthy.

I'm glad albums like these are on this list, it's unique, it's obscure, and it swings for the fences. It's two epic 7 minute plus songs are fantastic, and I genuinely love the vocals and commitment to the artistic vision. Unfortunately that vision often leaves me feeling like I need a shower, most notably in the godawful second track which overstays it's welcome about 30 seconds into it's interminable 6 minutes.

Best Song: Gang Bang. As dumb as it is lyrically, from a performance perspective this fucking rules. Worst Song: The Faith Healer. These songs work better in a tight (i.e., short) form. This just felt sprawling and messy. Overall: I really liked the raw, aggressive quality of Alex Harvey's voice. He is capable of the kind of aesthetic I want in punk and punk-adjacent music: a reveling in an ugly and unpolished manner of being. Sadly, he uses it too infrequently on this album for my liking.

Geordie Greep

This starts really strong and then descends into cabaret

it's sensational due to the attack on the senses

It's kind of glammy rock. I think seeing them was an important part of the experience, as much as hearing them. I'm not too into this genre, but the album is OK.

Kind of a discount Frank Zappa. Listened to a little Hot Rats afterward. 2.8

2.5 Not the most subtle album we have listened to thats for sure. Didnt mind it, but thought the songs dragged on a bit. I would 100% go to an Alex Harvey concert in preferably a seedy venue.

this shit is banging

Laid the groundwork for a lot of other artists. I hear the vision.

I would give this a 3.5 as a "for fans of the genre" and "good find for those that enjoy glam rock but have already heard all the more notable and influential releases." Even though I like it, personally, I don't see why it should belong on this list.

I’d been aware of SAHB because the Japanese musician Rolly often talks about how much he loves them, but I’d never actually listened to their music before. This album does have some great glam rock moments — especially “The Faith Healer.” The instrumental performances are really strong, but listening to the album as a whole left me feeling a bit worn out.

Rough diamond rock

A reference point for many on their music journey, but not one of mine. That said, I enjoyed the trip back to the early 70s.

what in the rocky horror picture show

This is album 1001 for me. I think this is probably the sleeziest one I've heard yet, though there were definitely some contenders in the previous 1000 albums. There is something charmingly ridiculous about these guys. Their obsession with sex is comical, their stage presence over the top, and their music seems to take whatever instruments they can find or whatever notes they can play to make something exciting. If that's not punk, what is? I can certainly see the appeal that they would have had in 1973, and even now a little. Realistically though, there are better examples of everything they're trying to do. But you had to kind of admire how over the top it us.

After reading some reviews, I was expecting this album to be terrible or very distinctive (maybe both). It turned out to be really normal and average. Early 70s rock 'n roll with a lot of looks back to the 60s. The lyrics are more overtly and consistently sex-focused than a lot of other records, but they're not at all extreme for rock music. Like some of the other reviews, I don't see how this made the 1001 list. It's fine, it's fun, but it's not remarkable. Alex Harvey was apparently an influence for punk and alternative, but I don't hear why on this record.

Raucous hard rock vibe with a bit of attitude. Pretty sleazy lyrical content, I guess this is what you call cock rock (maybe it's a product of its time). I like the lead guitar parts.

Not bad, not really my thing but I appreciate the vocalists' energy and the instrumentation aint bad

Meh I get it, it’s cool but also just kinda average rock 3/5

it was okay, good bit of rock

It's a 3 but I did kinda dig things about it. I read Bon Scott was influenced by this band, and I think that's something that you can hear

Decent rock tracks.

A blend of blues and punk rock with cabaret elements. It gives out Rocky Horror Picture Show vibes.

Not terrible, I kind of enjoyed this album.

Kinda like a weird AC/DC?

This band is the lovechild of Meatloaf, Queen and Frank Zappa cover bands. Who else would have songs about a faith healer, the death of the teenage idol and gang bangs on the same album? I will never listen to these guys again. But oh were they fun.

Really fun

wtf bonus point for being legitimately hilarious

I didn't really find this too enjoyable, but its not the worst thing ever.

I will say while this is not necessarily my cup of tea, I can see why it could be on this list. A very unique listen for sure; felt like I was listening to a Rocky Horror Picture Show spinoff album. This kind of showy, glam rock isn't my favorite, but I can still appreciate it. The musicianship was good and the lyrics were funny at times. Overall, not bad.

I don't know if I would go so far as to say sensational...

kinda ground gears with the vocal quality in this, which was irritating, but you will NOT catch me complaining about a 35min album. thought that the lyrics were "vampires coming to the rescue". 2.5

Some genuinely good moments here, but I find that most of the album's inherent charm and wit is eclipsed by its messiness and generic production. Still, the highlights are there. I, for one, loved how ridiculous the song 'Gang Bang' was, and honestly was one of the better sounding songs here, just super funky and, unfortunately, had a super catchy chorus. And the lyrics are, well, the lyrics. The title track was easily the best song here; it's this theatrical, explosive story that seems to follow the extreme frustrations of some misunderstood protagonists. The song kind of has a proggy feel to it, and it has easily the best vocal performance here. I also really loved the final 2 minutes or so of the closer 'The Last Of The Teenage Idols', which does this '60s sugar pop kind of thing that works oddly well in the mix here. So some pretty neat moments here, and there's a lot of personality to go around, but I don't think I got too much out of this on first listen. Not really my thing.

This makes me think of a nude beach. It's in your face, somewhat obscene, full of odd sounds, and a bit feral. This is not what you imagine a nude beach to be like, but what it's really like - full of older people. The kind of folks who are comfortable in their own skin and don't care who sees their gems. It's raw.

The closest I've come in the real world to a Spinal Tap album. Gang Bang, Giddy Up a Ding Dong, etc. You know what? I bet these concerts were fun as hell to go to. Almost got to 4 stars, but didn't quite make it.

This was interesting. I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first. I loved the proto glam sound, instrumentally it really rocks. Some of the longer songs make me wonder if Alex Cooper listened to this. The songwriting is a bit inconsistent but the album ends on a high with closing track Last of the Teenage Idols

This album is WILD. I have no idea what it is, or what it's trying to be, or why I need to listen to it before I die, but it is definitely an experience. I like and respect experimental music, but sometimes it's kind of shit. Here's the thing: I never want to listen to it again. That's usually my standard of a 2 star review, but this one - absolute insanity aside - was actually a pretty decent listen. Halfway through the first song, I'm thinking, what the hell am I listening to? Then the second song starts playing, and he starts singing, "ain't nothing like a gang bang to blow away the blues," and I had to stop what I was doing to read the lyrics because, surely, "gang bang" must have meant something different in the 70s, no? Yeah, no. He's singing about a 27-guy gang bang. What the actual fuck, man? Boomers were listening to this shit, then yelling at us because our music had cuss words? There's a song called Giddy Up a Ding Dong. "I swear on the wet head of my first case of gonorrhoea" is a real lyric. What the fuck, man.

Best Track - "Giddy Up A Ding Dong"

Fun rock

n esperava quase nada, e me diverti, bom album

This is my first run in with the Alex Harvey Band but i can see why it is talked about as an original punk founder. Some moments such as Gang Bang were a bit too crude for ME! In the big '25!! I very much liked the song that the album gets its title from, Next. Short. Seems like a lot of these older albums are on the shorter side.

It's all over the place but not in a bad way. The influence this had on Nick Cave is palpable and that alone makes this noteworthy.

I am ranking this as a 3 as a matter of personal taste. It was a blast listening to this once, and I would be happy to know that albums like this will keep showing up all the time now and in the future. Just would not listen to this one too many times in a roll.

Has some positives but I would rather just listen to T. Rex. 3/ 5

"Ain't nothing like a gang bang"? :D Ok. Mut ihan hauska sellainen. Biiseissä kuulee paljon blues ja rock n roll vaikutteita. Kivan monipuolinen levy. Parhaat: Vambo Marble Eye, The Last Of The Teenage Idols

It's fine.

Beginning your band's name with the word "Sensational" doesn't necessarily make it true. The band should have been called "The Glam Alex Harvey Band" because this is T. Rex combined with some weird blues hybrid of saxophone and harmonica. Bon Scott described Alex Harvey as an influence and I absolutely can see that. This is especially true on Swampsnake. There is some similarity to their singing style. There are also a lot more background vocals than I was expecting to hear. The rest of the Glam Alex Harvey Band all seem to chip in with vocals that at times sound like they are directly from the late 50's. All of the talk on here about Alex Harvey's penis is not from the late 50's music scene though. The Beatles didn't eventually sing "I Want You to Hold My Cock" or "Screw Me Do," so there is a bit more of an edge to this last of the teenage idols. There is a song called Gang Bang, so obviously the Glam Alex Harvey Band had no issue with being on the AC/DC side of teen idols. This is a funny album, because I don't know if I would ever listen to it again but I would possibly put this album on a playlist if I'm looking to hear a bit of T. Rex and Mott the Hoople with Buddy Holly backgrounds mixed in. The album quality drifts off a bit in the end but overall this was a fun one. My favorite songs were: Swampsnake Gang Bang (it's a catchy song and the horns are cool) Giddy Up a Ding Dong Vambo Marble Eye Last of the Teenage Idols

Loved revisiting this, stands the times well

Quite the collection. The theatrical stuff is out there and digestible is small chunks. On the other hand the more conventional is enjoyable if tied to its time. Did see them in their hey day and it was a riot.

Some great tunes here, and others a bit ruined by the vocalist at times. Not nearly as bad as some reviewers would have you think. 3/5

This is the only person in the world who kinda sounds like Geordie Greep, besides that there isn't really that much that is interesting about this album. I feel like if I was around in the 70's I would have really dug this, but music has come such a long way since then that I don't really find it that novel. Not really sure why this made the list, the two sentences in the summary are just quotes from other musicians saying this guy is cool. Mid 3.

Absolutely bonkers, this one! Not sure if I love it or hate it...think I love it!!!

Nice album, some parts were awesome with powerful guitars and wind instruments. But some songs were somewhat boring. I would rate it a 3,4/5. Because I would be interested in listening to more of their music, but not enough to be a 4.

Hmmm. Not really for me this. "The Faith Healer" wasn't bad, but the rest was just muffled crap. The songs were better musically than vocally and even lyrically. Shame really.

Solid glam

After reading the comments I thought I was going to hate this. This was actually alright. Maybe it caught me on a good day, but I liked the dramatic nature of it. Rock operaish. Do your thing, Harvey.

A variety pack of an album. The songs all came on very strong, but I didn't really want them most of the time. Still, I respect the style and originality enough to give it a three.

it was ok i guess. way too smutty

This rocks hard. It can be a little too much sometimes (looking at you, Gang Bang), but the blues and swing elements create a really fun, unique style. I can definitely see the influence this had on artists like AC/DC and Nick Cave.

This album felt very all over the shop. There are elements of elements of hard rock, glam rock, prog rock and a little bit of blues, this album has a really unique sound. When it is good it is really good but when it's bad it's awful

Sort of all over the place.

das in da 70er im usgang fändi no nice

Sort of campy, sort of punk. A lot of attitude.

This was pretty good, had never heard of Alex Harvey before. Not a bad glam rock offering but a bit inconsistent, gang bang and giddy up a ding dong were not great while The Faith Healer and Next were standouts to me.

Was sick, vibes were nice

The lyrics on this album...wtf? I hope it's tongue in cheek laudable, else very concerning. Catchy tunes, VERY well composed melodies. Reminds me musical

It never fails to be interesting thats for sure. Maybe not my favorite thing in the world but it kept me on my toes. Throw a dart at the board and they hit whatever genere you got. Well the biggest thing for me is the damn gangbang. Surely that ment something different 50 years ago. Nope. Its the same thing as one the hub. Wild. And people look at wap or whatever as an affront to God. This in concept is much more sacrilegious that a horney lady. Insane. That song gave me a good chuckle. I saved a track or 2 and that was OK. Nothing I love love but decent enough.

classic heavy rock (kiss / motley crue / ...)

This was fun!! Looks like they were the inspiration to some great names. I always find it funny what doesn’t cross the pond.

Honestly regularly kinda creepy

How have I never heard of Alex Harvey? I’m embarrassed. Kind of a cross between Bon Scott era AC/DC and Iggy Popp, but sillier. This album is really fun.

Something fun songs, J. Giels-ish.

Quite stupid, but I enjoyed it, especially the first two songs which were rollicking fun. The original Jacques Brel and the Scott Walker versions of "Next" are better though. On my second listen, I realised he reminds me of Geordie Greep on that song.

Was not sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised.

Kinda interesting genre bending. Glad to be introduced to it.

Next by The Entirely Adequate Alex Harvey Band was somewhat ok

Kinda all over the place. T.Rex if Marc Bolan were a horny 13-year old. Some fun shuffle and rock -- and it certainly doesn't take itself too seriously. The title track, about losing one's virginity with a prostitute while in the Army, is an odd listen as is, of course, "Gang Bang." But there are some bangers on here. Worth a listen.

Fun vibes.

Is my lucky day! FAVO: Swampsnake, Giddy up a ding dong

That was interesting. The music was good, the lyrics were different. They were definitely high AF when they wrote this but it was entertaining. Would give 3.5 if I could.

I didn't hate it. But this is an entire album with the energy of Big Balls by ACDC. I'm sure my 14 year old self is giving me a thumbs up deep within my years of personal self reflection. I will admit, I did think a few songs were a bit catchy. Plus isn't it nice that gangbangs have an anthem they can call their own. But after the 5th song about his dick I began to ask myself what I'm doing with my life. Am I wasting away listening to things I don't like? Could I be more focused on getting what I want out of this life? Do I know what love truly feels like? Do my friends and family know how much they mean to me? What if I died today and this album was the last thing I listen to? Would people think I loved this band after finding it on my spotify? Would my family and friends listen to the gangbang song at my funeral and say something silly like I lit up a room? I think it's time I began staring into the mirror, trying to figure out who that guy is, and if he is happy. Probably won't give it another listen, but you never know

Quite theatrical glam rock. I liked it more than that description would have suggested.

6/10… glam rock

I'm not sure about Sensational, but it's certainly something. A couple of the tracks were good (Swampsnake and Vambo Marble Eye caught the ear), some were a little beguiling (Last of the Teenage Idols) and others were plain bizarre and rather horny (Gang Bang, Giddy Up a Ding Dong, Next). All in all, confusing, but I don't think The Confusing Alex Harvey Band would have quite the ring to it.

In which awesome instrumentals do their best to fight back against rather childish lyrics

Have you ever noticed that if a band's name is "The Senational" or "The Fabulous" or the "The Superterrific" they are usually not? His vocals remind me of Bon Scott (AC/DC's first singer). Some of the songs have pretty great rocking energy: Swampsnake, Gang Bang (there should be more blues boogie rock song about group sex), & Giddy Up a Ding Dong (great piano playing). They are fun but they are kind of hokey. Some of the songs are just kind of weird: Next and Faith Healer (that one has it's moments but I feel like it doesn't really go anywhere and when they bust out the slide whistle?... no.) The Last of the Teenage Idols: I don't believe for a second that he ever was or will be a teenage idol. And the songwriting on that one is just a disaster. Starts as a boring ballad then rocks out then goes into do wop.

idk what’s worse… the song Gangbang or the song Giddy Up A Ding Dong… but besides the machismo song names and lyrics, this album showcases some great musicianship. i’ll give it 2.5/5

Uh… 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 This record was not expected, but a fun ride. You can tell their influence on bands like AC/DC, Ween, Spinal Tap lol. Cool to hear so many boundaries being pushed all the way back in ‘73 Scotland. Some of the lyrics have aged badly, but if you understand the era, context, and reality that they were trying for shock, humor, and originality, it goes a long way to enjoying this experience.

The 70s was a "sensational" time. There were songs published with lyrics like... "Ain't nothing like a gangbang To blow the blues away." Good times.

Not for me

I like how much energy this guy has, it seems like he's having a lot of fun. The style is a bit theatrical and camp for my taste (sort of a punkish Meatloaf vibe), but it's kind of a fun listen

Is this the horniest album on the list?

I surprising enjoyed this. I dreaded listening to it because the cover art look lame. It’s easy to see where Bon Scott was influenced by them. Don’t sleep on this one, it’s actually pretty good. 1001 album worthy: yes 107/200

Kind of fun

started off really great and slowly went downhill from there. i found myself waiting for it to end. then the last song decided to pan left making me think i had an issue with my headphones which aggravated me to no end

Not bad, not bad, but nothing special. Track number 3 (I forgot the name) annoyed me.

Influential? Absolutely. Has it been done better? Also yes, especially the style that Bon Scott would later embody on songs like "Big Balls", and "The Jack".

A hyper sexual meatloaf? The rock licks are solid. The material is out of my scope.

Además de Gang Bang y The Faith Healer me gustó la última canción, aunque también tiene problemas: The last of the Teenage Idols. Otro rock and roll es Vambo Marble Eye.

Jesus Christ, what on earth is this? I didn't know what to expect and I still don't know what I have been listening to. I mean, 'The faith healer' is a fantastic song, reminiscent of Can, truly revolutionary for 1973. But the album follows with 'Giddy up a ding dong', not just a stupid title but also an absurd Racey-like glamrock or glampop-song. In Next we get German cabaret, 'Swampsnake' is a straight ahead blues rocker, 'Gang bang' a boogie-type of song. Closer 'The last of the teenage idols' is three songs in one, ending with something like crooning over a shalalalala-choir. Seriously. Yes, it's an eclectic mix. But if you can make a song like 'The faith healer', why not make a couple of those and fill an album with that?

Why are so many people hating on this! Its pretty good! Not worthy of a majority 1 ⭐️ reviews! Bluesy, noisy, adlibbed-ish, nice grooves, quirky and fun! The lyrics go between the absurd and the obscene! While not my new favourite bad, I enjoyed it!

As much as Alex tried to get me to hate this, I couldn’t

this album is all things weird and hilarious. it was fun to listen to, but half the time I was wondering what I was actually listening to. surprised that this actually made it onto a top 1,001 list, but here we are.

Gotta giddy up a ding dong.

Musically interesting kindo of hard rock mixed with cabaret style bombast/melodrama. Lyrically silly and sophomoric. But the interesting arrangements, very tight playing and dramatic presentation makes for a pretty enjoyable listen despite the terrible lyrics. 3.5 stars

Some fun songs, but often problematic thematically in our more politically correct times. This one really shows its age both musically and lyrically.

good album, but in my opinion it's not worth listen to it before you die.

If you'd asked me what I remembered about The Sensational Alex Harvey Band from my '70s childhood, when my older brothers liked them, I'd tell you that I had a memory of slightly stompy, solid, blues-y rock and roll, with a charismatic front man. 50+ years on, my impression seems to have been accurate. I quite enjoyed it, although my own taste does normally veer towards the slightly more "arty", for want of a better word.

1973. This is really quite a decent offering and very much a surprise to my ears. I was always under the impression that TSAHB were proper dad rock, and to be fair there's an element of glam rock, which is to be expected for the time, however there's a smattering of very good tracks, 'The Faith Healer' is excellent. There's also some utter rubbish 'Giddy Up A Ding Dong', as the name suggests, is horrific. Less novelty would make this a better album. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ unlikely Good in places ★★★☆☆

As soon as the music started, I was pumped up. Very high energy and fun. But then when the singer started up, yeah energy gone. He was ok. Next was pretty funny, and The Last Of The Teenage Idols was good. The rest was mediocre. Hard to rate, I want to give it a 2 for the singing but the music was really a blast, so I'll go with a 3. Best song: The Last Of The Teenage Idols

3.5 - a goofy album that actually sounds good

I quite liked this. The lyrics point to a troubled soul but I like the music whilst feeling for the artist

A good bluesy/glam rock album, you can definitely hear the influence they had on AC/DC. Good album and a bit of fun

Sabia que a banda ‘The Sensational Alex Harvey Band’ continuou se chamando ‘The Sensational Alex Harvey Band’ mesmo após a saída do sensacional Alex Harvey?

I can tell they had fun. Glad the album wasn't longer tho, I'll be real. There is only so much guitar wailin one can take.

I agree with the criticisms but still liked listening to this more than most other albums on this list

Good fun, 1/2 duds but overall a good album

Silly, sexual and a bit gross. Not sure I'll look at the Scottish the same after listening to this album.

Music is pretty cool, lyrics sound like they belong to Spinal Tap songs. Not a fan of the singing either.

This one was a bit of a mixed bag. I’ll give credit where it’s due—Scott LaFaro and Bill Evans usually get all the shine, but Paul Motian deserves props for trying something different here. He blends jazz, bop, free improv, and even a little touch of blues and doo-wop. That doo-wop flair toward the end of "Gloria’s Step" actually caught me off guard in a good way. The opening track had a cool groove and set the stage nicely, but unfortunately, the rest of the album just faded into background noise. I didn’t dislike it, but I never felt pulled in either

Pretty boring 70's glam rock. Nothing jumped out.

Fun listen. Nice to hear a band not take themselves too seriously during their time.

Took me half the album to understand what it's supposed to be. Once I wrapped my head around it, I really appreciated its fusion of heaviness and glam. Guaranteed this would go hard as f*** in a live setting - serious Bon Scott vibes, with a big & loud band behind such an electrifying performance. With that said, I expect 3/5 people I know would get into this. Might be higher if the track sequencing changed. I'd put Teenage Idols or Giddy Up at the front of the album, and Next as track 2 to really advertise this as a showpiece.

Alright but did't jump out at me

Very 1970s glam rock. Some of it is pretty good.

Serviceable glam rock. Nothing special here to me

I can see why this was influential, but it leans too heavily theatrical.

Pretty good, best unknown album so far. some fairly standard blues/boogie but one or two cool songs there.

never heard of this - pretty solid, and interesting historical album, given the influence it seems it had

Kind of strange lyrics, not so great or unique sound. Some decent songs but overall not good.

Not sensational, but not bad.

That was fun, I'll keep it on the shuffle server.

That was wild.

You'll be hearing from HR in the morning.

Decent album. I’d listen to more stuff like this but can’t see myself going back to this often.

Second half of this album was quite interesting. The first half was quite difficult.

Can’t remember was probably okay

I found the album to definitely be a smooth listen especially early in the morning. The album turned my mundane work day into a day full of high energy fun and laughter. For someone that does not normally listen to this music, i would listen to this album again.

Alright

Sounds fun

The music was actually really good, like his vocals, but the premise is a little crazy. 3/5
