Reviews (page 5 of 7)

I put Alex Harvey in the same camp as Meatloaf. Theatrical performers with some okay music here and there. I'm being generous with a 2.

I thought it was quite a boring album and not really something I would actively listen to again and the album was a bit weird to be honest it started alright but then just got weirder as the album continued

I don’t get this and don’t particularly like this one. Too many songs about his anatomy. Only upside is it’s mercifully short and let me hurry up and get to the new Noah Kahan that was released today.

Sure set expectations high calling the band “The Sensational” anything. Maybe “The Boring” would be more accurate. Glam rock/Cabaret just doesn’t work for me

One of those albums you wonder why it's on the list. It's fine music, the band is alright. The lyrics are childish and dumb. Unlike AC/DC this isn't a big dumb fun album. It doesn't hit the same, at all. Maybe this is one of those albums that had it's time and place and faded away. Because no one I've asked today has heard of them.

A thousand monkeys banging at guitars accidentally invent hair metal.

6 songs 32 min don’t known what the heading was : one song rock n roll next ballad next …British Band beginning of the 70’s. Read they had a eccentric stage presence w mime face paint, etc

Buen álbum, con buen ritmo, pero no my cup of tea. Giddy Up A Ding Dong es la más destacable, con un sonido pegajoso y memorable. Nunca había escuchado a Alex Harvey. Es un álbum cortito pero con una clara línea throughout.

First impression: this is not a particularly good album. Songs like Next reminded me of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Giddy Up a Ding Dong was just kind of dumb. However, I also saw the influence it had on future artists like Meatloaf and later Ron Gallo. Considering this in context to the time period, too, I can’t think of anything from the time like it. Vambo Marble Eye wasn’t bad, but it also had more classic rock guitar solo work. I don’t regret listening to this one, but I’m not gonna be returning it anytime soon.

It’s like all the bad parts of Tom Waits and Frank Zappa combined into one record. “Gang Bang” started a pattern of unforgivable song topics, or songs that should’ve been therapy sessions instead. “Giddy Up A Ding Dong”. What was that chorus? What was that? Then came “Next”, and it almost had something. A very colorful, crazy instrumental that I actually liked, but another song topic that kinda just made me scratch my head. Everything else was sub-par rock of one subgenre or another. 2/5, a couple of grandiose instrumental passages save this thing from being a 1/5

Some pretty jaunty tunes, but man those lyrics. Just some really rough songwriting. They can't all be Jacques Brel.

I just don't think it should be legal to name your own band "Sensational." If this was "The Fair to Middling Alex Harvey Band" it would probably be three stars. As it is two stars for the influence on AC/DC.

I don't like the lyrics.

2.5/5 cool instruments but not my style

#908. This one is pretty terrible. Not sure how it got here. 2/5: nah

Jeg synes allerede det er rigeligt Frank Zappa på listen uden også at have den her fyr med

not great but gets extra points for the title track and scotland forever

Nothing incredible here

Eh, it's alright. Dude is literally singing about nothing but sex and dumb shit. I know the 70's were crazy but even this feels heavy handed. The music is fine, the singing is fine, overall this is a band that time forgot I think. It doesn't stack up with albums of the time, but I don't think I'd judge someone for enjoying it. I'd give it a low 3 for sure.

Influential =/= essential.

I can tell they're having a lot of fun, but I just couldn't get behind this one.

Ok, sure. This album, this band was all just a big joke. Have fun, dress up in goofy shit, cut a bunch of simplistic, prepubescent melody’s that make the teen-set giggle, and take it live. The bio review compares this to early Punk and Iggy Pop. Not in your fucking dreams. More like Weird Al, if Weird Al was a pervert. I kinda think Weird Al is a pervert. Oh well… let’s go 2 stars for Vambo’s guitar riff… the rest is pure shite.

It's, ok. A very flashy frontman backed by a perfectly competent band. I would say the song themes and lyrics are not spectacular. But it's got some groove. Prior reviews have it rated pretty bad, but it's not the worst thing I've ever heard.

I'm sorry, but no.

Bit dodgy in parts, a couple of ok tracks

"Sensational" is doing a lot of unjustified heavy lifting here. I mean, I like a good sleazy rock album as much as the next guy, and sure, a gang bang might just wash the Blues away, but this just doesn't do anything for me. I feel like I can get this same thing from a dozen better bands that don't have similar vocal affectations to Adam Sandler. 2* Gang Bang was my top track simply for the scuzz of it, but i dont know that i'd actively go about relistening to it.

Too much screaming, only a couple listenable one

I like the general sound of the album but the songs are too long for what they are and some of the lyrics are ridiculous, especially Gang Bang. I didn’t like the sound of Next at all.

The sound and musical vibes of this album aren’t terrible by any means - there are some strong glam rock elements that get your foot tapping - but there’s something utterly bizarre about the vocal delivery and lyrics. As far as I can tell he’s singing about his nob…? The album just ends up being a bit jarring, and not one I’ll remember for any good reason.

Very dynamic and interesting

Lyrics frightened me

це ваще АХАХАХ омага оце текста

The best I can say, they likely inspired some big names.

Alex Harvey band- some cool organs on faith healer. Band sounded good but I didn’t like his vocals and couldn’t really get into any of this. I’m pretty burnt out on 70’s rock from this list recently. Did not enjoy this and don’t want to hear again.

Giddy up a ding dong?? Wtf is that lol. “Next” sounded like deranged musical theater. This started off as just mid tier 70s rock like everything else on this list but got progressively more unpleasant

That was quite annoying

Felt like a very long 35 minutes.. didn't do it for me

It's not a surprise they were a major influence to AC/DC. I can very much hear their influence, especially in the vocal style. New band to me. I like the blues rock/piano in Gang Bang, and the use of horns. Some was good, some not so much. Def not my taste. Low 3? Naw, I'm cranky.

the who if it was less interesting idk

Weird outlandish lyrics

Stale 70s "classic rock" garbage. Rounding up because the production is actually pretty good.

I'm sure fans of Manfred Mann find this engaging. I do not.

2/5 - I got vibes of T. Rex and Meatloaf with super ick-out lyrics. It was occasionally OK, without the Gang Bang and Ding Dong.

ADHD the album. Completely unfocused, chaotic, all over the place, and right in the middle of it all a Broadway musical number, which I actually enjoyed the most. Punk in spirit, what the fuck in execution. Doesn't surprise me that this was an inspiration for Nick Cave, but I can't stand Nick Cave.

first two songs were awful, the rest got weird but not in a bad way - title track was my fav. still overall an unpleasant listening experience why is a band from glasgow making country rock

I bet Alex Harvey is a totally chill guy who respects women

Groupe inconnu. Rock classique, assez entrainant, mais plutôt gâché par le chant. Certains morceaux sont un peu plus créatifs (les 2 plus longs), mais ce n'est pas suffisant pour une seconde écoute. =>2/5

Not bad, not great.

I feel like "Sensational" is a bit of projection here. No disrespect to the band, this was definitely a sound that resonated in the late 70s. Alex Harvey himself sounds very animated and zany, and the instruments at times can be impressive, but even for a short album it's a little bit of a slog

Sensational Nah actually it wasn't that bad, could even be a 3 but it's too punky for me

musically it's ok, but not keen on the vocals.

Just can't get into them

I feel bad for every individual that was on an instrument for this album. They put their heart and soul into their music, just for Alex to start vocalizing about his penis and balls. Basically the instrumentation is great, but every song being an innuendo or just strait up (no pun intended) about his pentus kinda killed the vibe. Don't get me wrong I think it's funny, and I'd really enjoy it as a meme. But it's deadass on this list, and that's what is truly confusing.

Comes in so promising and then just turns into a self indulgent mess.

Not for me

Ballerock.

Not really my jam. Didn't hate it but didn't really like it. 2 stars.

Stupid. This just barely scrapes past being a 1/5.

A different genre for every song. I wouldn’t call it sensational though

The guitar player for this band is very good but I don't like the singer. Also, a couple of the songs involved questionable lyrics. I grew up in the '60s so not a lot offends me but did we really need a song about the dubious pleasures of a gang bang?

I know I've listened to this album 2 separate times but my brain purged every memory of it. Thanks brain.

Like if Rocky Horror was even more explicit and also not any good.

I think you needed to be there at the time.

I was not expecting a song about a literal gang bang. This dude is a total horn dog.

The music is listenable, the lyrics not so much.

‘Sensational’ is either ironic or a massive stretch. I’m not really sure who needed to hear this middling, semi-serious glam rock before they die, but I’m quite satisfied to have played it through once and moved on. The last track was somewhat interesting as a sort of pseudo medley thing.

Not sure the lyrics hold up today. Not that sensational. Next…

Confused. Bits I like (Bon Scott era ACDC owes a debt of gratitude), but bored as hell of the pub rock by the end. 2*.

definitely could have gone without hearing this before I die to be honest

My rating 2.3

Some of it I couldn't stand and had to skip, couldn't stand his voice. But a few were a bit more interesting.

In the bin at a garage sale.

The Faith Healer is a good one, the rest is weird.

I came into this one completely cold. After the first few tunes, I wrote, “English glam rock, the musical.” I later learned that Harvey formed this band after being in the London cast of Hair, so I guess that makes sense. The blues-rock influences on the first couple of tunes sounded good, if not particularly memorable. The sophomoric lyrics on “Gang Bang” didn’t help. Things got a little more interesting with “Faith Healer”, although the overly long tune still had me wondering if I was supposed to take the band seriously. Again, nothing particularly special or interesting, even for the time it was produced. The second side opens with a not particularly interesting 1950s cover, followed by a more interesting, cabaret cover “Next” (Au Saivant). At least with the latter we see the band trying to be somewhat experimental. “Vambo Marble Eye” steps back into more familiar glam-rock territory and has some good guitar work, but it is otherwise nothing particularly memorable. The final track, “The Last of the Teenage Idols” was my favorite on the record, but not enough to make up for the rest of it. After listening a couple of times, I spent some time trying to figure out how in the hell the album made this list. The best I could figure out is that this band gained notoriety due to their performances, which obviously impossible to capture in a recording decades later. I guess you had to be there. Not for me.

This seems to be some kind of old white forerunner to Prince. It has all of the same horniness, some of the blues influence.. But this is distinctly white guy blues. Not rating this terribly because the playing is altogether competent and there are some nice moments of good musicians doing basically fun stuff. But I won't be returning to it personally - there is just too much slightly naff feeling stuff next to those moments.

Entertaining but not particularly good

Nice easy listening 70s record…but to me not more than that. Sound reminds me of The Who, early Bowie and The Rocky Horror Picture Show…

Felt like I was listening to the rocky picture horror show soundtrack. I've never seen the movie but I imagine that's what it would sound like.

Probably better live…..back then.

I kinda loathed a lot of this, but at least it was short?

I do not like the glam rock or vocals

Another in the endless series of heroes of Gen X bands I like. Can hear QOTSA right off the bat in the Swampsnake riff. I dunno, like a lot of glam, it must’ve been something else at the time but now it’s just stale.

I have learnt that anyone who puts Sensational or Fabulous in their title is not. Look, it was not terrible, but I will not be listening to this ever again. It is like a bad musical soundtrack. 2 stars

This one wasn’t really for me, which sucks cause it seems like it should be up my ally. 2 stars. Was a fun/goofy and kind of unhinged album, very energetic but the drugs this guy was obviously on made him a bit too weirdly sexual. There was just not enough variance for me to want to listen again but was a good experience. Leaning more towards a 3

Seemed a bit forced. It was easy listening but didn’t inspire me at all

Tough to judge this band out of the context of time. Some moments are very cool. It merges rock, glam and vaudeville with some proggy moment (faith healer is a journey). It never rises to great. I think it's more meaningful historically than straight up listenable. Still better then Pretzel Logic.

☠️☠️

If you like songs about gangbangs and gonnorrhea, go for it. I was ready to just give it 1* and move on but the last song The Last of the Teenage Idols is pretty good

Rätt irriterande

Ingen stark åsikt om detta.

I don’t mean to be rude. But this was quite shite. Similar to some other albums I’ve reviewed thus far. Musically it was probably okay. But lyrically it was pox. To reiterate the sentiment of one of the top reviews for this album “I guess you had to be there”. 2/5 for mine.

Docking this album 1 star for the track, "Gang Bang." What the hell kind of song is that?

I usually love glam rock, but this isn't hitting for me. Just a bit off-putting.

When someone calls themselves Sensational, they probably aren't.

Less than stellar, let alone sensational. Guy needs to calm down about his dick.

мелодии вроде ничего, артист странный тип

appreciated a nice short album for a Saturday. otherwise, again, not my favourite. sort of vague, innoffensive 70s music

by no means am i a prude but when i heard gang bang i jumped back like the cynthia erivo gif

In Ordnung, aber nicht viel hängen geblieben.

this is an album that made me laugh and that's NEVER a good thing if i want to think this album deserves to be on the list. It's not all bad but it's just super quirky.

There's nothing about this album that is worth praising; it's dull with weird lyrics that are not great. It's not the most horrible album, but this glam album really does nothing to deserve a place on the list.

Started out ok, but the last three songs were dismal. If you like blues rock with one musical theatre interlude, this is the album for you.

Shit but vaguely entertaining in some kind of way. Hope Spotify doesn't start recommending these songs to me.

In a way this is sensational, but in another way, it isn’t.

Jaysus what the fuck?

There's a song on this called "Gang Bang." Alex Harvey did rapes, right? This man seems like he probably did some rapes.

Somewhere in between an odd Aerosmith and The Rocky Horror Picture Show...

122/1001 The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ They're not living up to their band name with this offering. I was almost saying "Next!" after the first two songs and fortunately it did improve. Musically it's decent, but the lyrics are so goddam cringe worthy and the vocals are OK at best.

Had a few moments of fun proto-punk almost but I would get drowned out by a wave of some of the worst music you've ever fucking heard. 3/10, lucky to miss the 1 star range.

“There ain’t nothing like a gang bang to blow away the blues.” I guess somebody had to write a rock song about group fucking. Might as well be Mr. Harvey. It’s a fun enough rock album, but it didn’t move me. I assume its inclusion is due to its influence on rock juggernauts AC/DC and as a representation of the Scottish 1970s rock scene. One of the times I wish I could read the book blurb for some context. “The Faith Healer” is kind of cool.

Sleazy and silly. Not the worst, but not for me.

2 de 5

Second half of album better than the first, which was trying to hard to be controversial without being musically interesting

I WANTED to believe that the "gang bang" alluded to in the song by the same name was a consensual gang bang. But this is was the 70s, so that's probably wishful thinking. Honestly, it is really too bad, because this album is otherwise kind of catchy and almost has a Rocky Horror Picture Show quality to it.

The only sensations associated here are mild nausea and the feeling of wasted time. Possibly the longest 35 minutes of my life, it’s like T Rex without the charm or quality, Gary Glitter without the stomp or sense of self parody. And, hopefully, less child abuse. 2/5, and a low 2 at that.

Never heard of this band before. It’s not good, but it’s not awful. I don’t think I’d listen to it again.

I was excited when I read the Wikipedia article… a bunch of great artists listing him as an influence! Maybe I was about to discover something great! Nope.

I don’t really want to listen to any of the lyrics

Don’t think there was anything too sensational about the Alex Harvey Band. It was okay, the instruments were well played and I enjoyed that aspect but the vocals were a bit hit and miss. Idk, it’s pretty average tbh.

Yeah, not enjoying this one. Between his vocals and the lyrics just being juvenile, it's gonna be a no from me. Musically, it's fine, ranging from bluesy jigs and glam/hard rock cuts, but everything else is just not for me.

Interesting blend of glam rock & blues with hint of rockabilly. The mixing wasn't great, but the rhythm was. However, all the tracks bled together into a jumble of song, and the lyrics were rough

AC/DC before they got tough

Yeah this was pretty crude.

This is (too) many things, but sensational isn't one of them. Sounds like a random collection of songs going nowhere, usually rock and roll-esque but not the good kind (imagine Gang Bang with Jagger's voice and it could have been a mediocre Stones song). Struggled to finish it.

Too Camp

It was, in fact, not sensational.

I gotta give the guy some credit for going so HARD with all these songs. Musically it really could have been a sensation if he had given us a little more variety. It’s a shame he didn’t use some of that talent to deliver a great rock ballad. Not sure we really needed 3 parts of The Last Of The Teenage Idols, one was plenty. The lyrics were questionable at best, the guy could use some therapy!

-Bro what the hell was that -mixing sounded like shit for the most part? Sounded like all mics were covered with a wet sock - GANG BANG ARE YOU KIDDING - “there were 27 guys, what an unexpected surprise” “she was SMILING THROUGH THE TEARS” I’m calling the police - next was crazy - love the Scottish accents - last of the teenage idols is actually pretty great but not worth what i just went through -my Spotify wrapped is gonna be absolutely doinked this year

Album felt incredibly incohesive. Swampsnake was good and Next was completely intolerable 2/5 7.64/10

This is an album that I had never heard of by an artist that I did not know. It is just weird enough that I can't give it a 1, if I knew for certain that he was not being serious I could get this up to a 3. Also there is a song about a gang bang, which was something I did not expect even after reading the name of the song.

chaotic well made but slightly cheesy

Very odd, humorous but not super engaging. Maybe it would grow onme if I gave it a chance!

The music was cool (harmonica, drums, guitar) and it all really worked together. But the lyrics just sounded like a 18 year old boy that had sex for the first time and that was all he thought about. For the music i really enjoying it and hoping the lyrics would catch up, but honestly they were just stupid and something any 18-22 year old could write.

Mid 70s rock and roll with overly sexual and creepy themes that gross me out. The only semi-cool song on here was “next” which had a show tune vibe. Next indeed.

Sadly forgettable.

Musically, a 3.5. Lyrically, 1.69 (he would have liked my choice of decimal, if not what preceded it).

So that one song is crazy.

This guy actually wrote a blues rock song about a gang bang?!? Who the hell is this guy? The album was kind of all over the place with the subjects of each song, but the songs were fully committed and well written. I don't think I would play the album for guests.

Was wondering why I never heard of this band. Now I regret knowing this band.

I’m going to describe this album in a manner I think Alex Harvey would appreciate. It can suck my swampsnake dong. I endured the audiotory pounding for a full 15 mins then realised I could action my sense of free will and stop it. The insanity of the lyrics drove me to it but the final nail was the intro to faith healer. After enduring for nearly 2mins of the repetitive drilling of a guitar with one note. I skipped forward but was ultimately subjected to what sounded like a Ringo Starr collab on Giddy up a ding dong. Now there were some better songs on the album. But sadly by track 4 I was lost. 1.5/5

⭐️⭐️ The laughs we had along the way, the friends we made, and the gang bangs we shared…

Sensasjonelt er det ikke, dog har skiva noen redeeming features. Det første jeg tenker er Alice Cooper, bare litt mer skrøpelig. Gang Bang og Giddy Up a Ding Dong er skikkelig drittlåter.

«Thank you», «Next»

What does a "soft shoe banana" mean?

Didn't hit.

Most of these songs were 3 minutes too long. Next was the only song that didn’t drag, the rest were just one idea repeated for 4+ minutes. I don’t understand this album’s inclusion on the list.

Dull by numbers rock

Ain't nothing like a gangbang 🔥🔥 we all should know less about each other strasznie jęczy, na pewno jest awangardowy, wyboisty i sceniczny nic sie nie wybilo tak specjalnie zeby mnie skusic BARDZO TEATRALNE dobra jednak vambo marble eye mnie skusilo chuj chuj chuuj

Not great, overly sexual with no subtlety. "The Faith Healer" was great, nothing else stood out.

Good sound until he opened his mouth.

Samme albumcover som Black Sabbath Vol. 4 jo

Experimental, crazy, and very sex focused. Fun to listen to - as long as you don't get sucked into the lyrics Favourite song: Vambo Marble Eye

Sensational is a real stretch. Reminds me of Alice Cooper but less fun, less interesting, and a lot creepier. Above all just boring with a lot of repetition of verses that did nothing for me in the first place. This might have been subversive when it came out but has aged like milk, found it lame

Like a wild Cabaret story set to rock music. I’m not mad at it but I’m not sure about it either. Gang Bang was fun. 2 stars. Could become 3 with more listens.

It had its highlights, but much of it felt resigned to shock rock. The missing link between Mott the Hoople and AC/DC.

I want whatever substances they had when they wrote these songs

Tylsää perusrokkia

Interesting and quite entertaining in parts, but not something I’ll return to

Freaky

Not for me

Me gusta cuando son así sacaditos. El tema es que se siguen repitiendo las temáticas. Nota: 2.5

Interesting lyrical choices, but, oh my lord this album will shock you. He's not hiding anything about what he wants. Musically, it's very glam rock.

Just old pre-roco, nothing special

The Sensationally Annoying Alex Harvey Band

Meh. The song about the gang bang was funny but it’s alright. Next was interesting. 2 stars.

2.6 Not my thing but it’s kinda fun

Idk. It’s just not for me

Heard of them, but hadn't heard them. Very disappointing. Juvenile even for 1971.

Pretty one-dimensional jangle rock. Juvenile and not in a fun way. Seems disingenuous and trying too hard to be edgy even for the time. Meh.

Mostly loud and frantic, all over the place and dated, but still decent rock

The instrumentals were good. Really good. Reminded me of Rocky Horror Picture Show in a way. Weird. Oddly showtuney.

What is this?? Why is it here? It's like bad glam rock. Wait. No. Not like. It is bad glam rock. "The Last of the Teenage Idols" caught my attention, and was almost good? But the album had kind of dug its own grave at that point. It's really nothing special or spectacular and especially nothing sensational. The closer you listen to it, the more it just doesn't feel right or sound all that good. It's also all over the place, too. Like sloppy and incredibly un-cohesive. Favorite Song(s): Gang Bang

what the fuck

I think I'd be more accepting if this was intended as a Led Zeppelin parody.

You can tell how this influenced other bands. But I think those bands do it better. 2/5

Always aware of Alex Harvey but never bought and of his music. Always associate him with his version of Delilah which was good. Thought he was still with us but learnt today as a result of this that he died yonks ago much too young. RIP. Can’t say I enjoyed this album much. Some good musicianship but not to my liking. One redeeming track was The Faith Healer which is excellent and bumped it up a star. 2.5(2)/5 9/6/25

Hard to find much to enjoy here. Grating music and cringe lyrics

I stopped listening during the song about the gang bang, which hasn't aged well and probably sucked in the first place.

Undersized, self-consciously-dressed Brit with massively unrealistic musical ambitions wants to sing like a Delta bluesman and then pose as a sexual trickster, then be a chanson man, then pretend he's Jimi Hendrix– what could go wrong? No bonus points for seeming to inspire AC/DC vocalists. The whole thing's excessive even allowing for the indulgence-friendly standards of glam. Also, bands that include "Sensational" in their names are not to be taken seriously. Same with those that feature song titles like "Giddy Up a Ding Dong."

Wowww the lyrics to Gang Bang were something

Inspiration for Robert Smith and Nick Cave Glad it left an impression on them but it barely registered with me

Nothing interesting for me

Didn't like the style, the sound, nor the energy. 5/10

# 481 : Next : 15/05/2025 I don't love it, I don't hate it. A couple of things stood out but no songs that connected with me. It’s good, but not great.

Sigh. There needs to be more women both on the list and creating the list.

Really didn't do much for me but I'm not typically into the glam side of classic rock.

background music. annoying voice. 2.

Alex Harvey is mid

"Sensational"

my headache

I see where Nick Cave was coming from. All bit too 'rocking' for me. Some lethal moments e.g. the intro to Faith Healer. But that's quickly ruined by hard rock guitar and sexy 70s guy yelling. Real edgy in 73

Horny guy in the 70's makes album. Good music. Too bad there's vocals.

Kinda zeppeliny

4-5/10.

Nothing special. To listen to once and to forget just after.

I didn't like this. I wanted to like it, but it was annoying. Almost good, but actually bad.

ain't nothing like a gang bang apparently.....

Well, I really liked it until he started singing - and about his Swampsnake, no less. That pattern pretty much followed for each song. There's a fine line between Alex Harvey and Bon Scott, and it might be nitpicking, but the tongue-in-cheek wink-wink aspect of Bon was miles above this 40-IQ nonsense. Shame, because the music is really adventurous - the vocals and lyrics alone shot this down from what would have been a likely 4 - sensational work Alex! 5/10 2 stars

Just came up short for me.

Campy. That’s the most positive thing I can say about this one. Not a fan.

Really disliked his vocal delivery and the content of the songs is pretty dubious. Some of it sounded not too bad musically. Low two - pretty close to a one.

Next... is a strange little beast of a record—part glam rock, part pub theatre, part fever dream cabaret—and while that might sound like a recipe for something exciting, it mostly left me scratching my head. Alex Harvey certainly has charisma, and the band is tight, but the whole thing leans so hard into its theatrical weirdness that it often forgets to be enjoyable. The title track, a cover of a Jacques Brel song, is impressively dramatic but also borders on exhausting. Elsewhere, songs like Swampsnake and The Faith Healer have a bit more punch, but they get lost in the album’s overall lack of direction. There’s a certain cult charm to it, and I can see how this might have hit differently in a live setting with Harvey strutting around like a rock 'n' roll pirate. But as a listening experience? It’s inconsistent, occasionally grating, and feels more like a quirky stage show than a great rock album. A couple of fun moments here and there, but ultimately, Next... is more odd than essential.

Not a big fan of glam rock. Some solid guitar tho. Standout song: The last of the teenage idols

Ummm…no. Was this accidentally put on this list? Gang Bang - 🤮. I can see how they may have been the first to do some raunchy, theatrical shit, but yeah, I must have had to live then to see its influence or impact.

Strange combination of rock with horns and goofy vocals with laughable lyrics. Every song is too long and repetitive.

Nothing to say on this one. Just garden variety 70s rock

Now this is rock and roll kid

It was just kinda there.

Nah. I didn’t have to listen to this. It’s not terrible but I didn’t like it.

Not sure how I feel about the fact that I'm now extremely into a song with the chorus "Ain't nothin' like a gang bang / To blow away the blues," but life goes on

Aint nothing but a gang bang is NOT the vibe for this morning >:(

Bitvis rätt bra men helheten lämnade inget starkt intryck på mig förutom att gitarristen var bra och det kändes lite sliskigt som typ Motley Crue. 2 av 5.

Could grow on me after a few listens

Well, this was both fun and disturbing. Some of it was pretty interesting, but I don't think I'll be going back to it too much.

Some freaky stuff going on here... 4/10

Ikke lige mig. Noget havde potentiale men lidt for 70’er guitar rock. Sangen next kan noget

When it started, I thought it was a joke, another irrelevant album from someone who maybe had some importance in musical history. During the listening session, I changed my mind a bit due to 1 or 2 songs that caught my attention, but with no power to avoid thinking it's still mediocre. It can be enjoyable, but not enough to be part of a list of essential albums.

I think for a song called gang bang and also the use of the f slur, we're gonna have to dock this one down to a 2. but must say there were two killer tunes on there with the rest of the cheesy fillers

This was, if not sensational, quite fun. It's very glam, could almost be a filthy musical soundtrack. The vocals are a bit off, and the lyrics definitely are! Don't think I'll return, almost a 3 but not quite. 2/5.

Yikes. Songs were too long and a little too theatrical. Some good musicianship but I wasn't impressed overall.

Basic bluesy rock that never really gets cooking. And that’s when it’s at its best. Experimental parts just aren’t good. Vocals and lyrics really kill this for me.

Subtle this is not. Wasn't a huge fan.

Oh, jazzy and delightful, I like it. The sound brings back some 70s nostalgia; the vocal is...well...singing. Glam rock. Sounds Queen-ish, sounds from Rocky Horror Picture Show, but I guess that's just how every glam rock in the 70s sounds like. I don't mean to compare bands with bands, but you have to admit that not everyone can sing like Freddie. I can enjoy it, but I don't see why it's on the top 1001. It's like a 2-2.5/5 album to me. Also, the lyrics are boring; you have to be musically as good as Led Zeppelin to get away with those lyrics, sir.

Conventional 70's blues rock entry here. Fun for about 6min

thank u, NEXT.......2 stars because the music was good - I like glam rock - otherwise it would be a 1. His singing style really put me off the whole thing, and the lyrics were sometimes downright horrifying. (The part about the woman smiling through the tears on Gang Bang in particular.) I saw a review that said the point is to feel uncomfortable and icky - okay, I do. To what end though? This was a tough listen.

This is a weird album... Why in the world is it on this list? Definitely gives of Rocky Horror vibes.

Pretty varied sounds on this album. Unfortunately all of them are noisy objectionable glam rock.

Weird rock opera

Gang bang is an interesting listen when your 14 year old daughter is in the back seat...

I'm starting to think that I enjoy Glam Rock a great deal less than I had previously thought. My prior experience with this band has been limited to hearing "Faith Healer" on late-night Classic Rock radio. Clearly, it was played when the DJ needed to use the restroom, smoke a cigarette, and make a phone call. The rest of it was typically bombastic and overly sexual. In an era where similar bands were a dime a dozen, this album sits well below the powerhouses that led the genre.

I did not really enjoy this at all.

2 for the music only

Just like many other movements scratch below the surface of A-listers (Bolan, Bowie, Ferry) and glam has some ordinary stuff that has not aged well. SAHB being one. I've tried with him, but never works.

Sensational is an apt word. By definition something need not be quality to be sensational. In fact, there may well be some facet of the presentation that provokes interest that is in direct contradiction of the standards and norms of the day for what is good. This is lusty, stompy, mid-tempo bog rock that's about to embarrass itself like someone's dirty uncle. Trying a bit too hard to be confrontational in its heaving sleaze on a number of tracks. Its shock value and cultural significance worn nearly all away while remaining deeply cringe. These glam, proto-punk songs are like a tarnished belt buckle with a sculpted pin-up girl plate removed from its leather and thrown away in a drawer because it belonged to some soon-to-be incarcerated, renegade relative. Maybe every once and a while you open the drawer, shuffle the contents around and the buckle peeks out at you—still lewd and begging to be recycled, melted down and reforged. The impulse to shock an audience still exists, it is one of the great impulses, but it has to be remade with the times.

I think the “sensational” in The Sensational Alex Harvey Band does a lot of heavy lifting. This was just diet AC/DC, as they sing sleazy songs, usually about sex, as they push the envelope on what they could get away with. But while AC/DC can make their songs work, the same cannot be said for Alex Harvey. Their songs just come off as stupid. The lyrics are really dumb, and the vocals can get very annoying. I almost felt like I could get behind a song or two (especially between The Faith Healer and Vambo Marble Eye), but it never happens. It’s a 35-minute album that feels like an eternity, which is not an easy feat. Favorite track: The Faith Healer, I guess Other hits: parts of Vambo Marble Eye and Gang Bang

Not really my cup of tea but The Faith Healer stood out a mile against the rest, such a brilliant, weird almost experimental track, loved the pulsing synth bass and the drums teasing but never quite kicking in. Wish they’d have done more in this vein.

I generally like the punk influencers. Not this one.

Almost turned it off during Gang Bang but was determined to see if there was anything on here worthy of making this album notable. There wasn’t.

Didn't connect with this at all.

This was a very weird album. I couldn't tell if it was a joke album, or serious, or what it was. That said, there was some very interesting things here and I was surprised that I didn't want to turn it off more. But it's not going to get listened to again most likely. It was recorded very well, too.

What is it with records from the 70's trumpeting "fantastic vocalists" and having the strangest vocal inflections? This is getting old fast. Some parts of songs are good, but neeeEEEEXXXT isn't pleasing to listen to. 4/10

Not great. “The Last of the Teenage Idols” was quite bad.

2.5 I see the potential, but cannot get past the lyrics

People will argue that modern music is obsessed with sex and conveniently forget this 1973 album all about the singer’s penis It’s very theatrical and ranges from the hard rock opener Swampsnake to the psychedelic The Faith Healer to an orchestra-backed Jacques Brel cover on the title track. The music is pretty good and Harvey’s vocals are ok if a bit much, but my god the lyrics… nothing more to be said, just listen to track 2 if you feel brave enough

Interesting, but not my thing. Strangely aggressive and at times theatrical, but the feel is off for my taste.

This was a strange album. I enjoyed the music, but was disinterested in the subject matter and lyrics of what they chose to sing about, whether it was a gang bang or "the taste of gonorrhea," I wasn't having any of it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't know what the song Next is from, but I've heard it, and it feels like it was featured in a movie scene.

They just casually slide a song in called Gang Bang that starts off with a pretty cool piano then tells the story of some woman banging 27 guys and smiling through the tears. If you liked that one, wait until you get to the song “next”.

Interesting, raunchy, awesome vocals!

Reminded me of Alice Cooper. Didn’t love.

While I normally like when musicians do their own thing, and don't mind sexual themes, this went past fun in the first few songs. After "Giddy Up A Ding Dong" I had to check how long this album was and thankfully only 35 minutes. He couldn't even resist making a song apparently about PTSD after war weirdly sexual. That being said the music itself is not bad at all

Скучно, треки очень длинные.

I hope someone got fired for this band naming blunder. 1.9 stars

More like the average Alex Harvey band

Well, if the lyrics and subject matter were not so objectionable, I really would’ve liked this one. Too bad.

Listened to this on a Tuesday morning, completely sober... yet I now feel piss drunk upon completion. It's overindulgent and in-your-face, that is probably more enjoyable to listen to WHILE piss drunk. There's some interesting songwriting choices being made, and thankfully at 35mins it doesn't overstay its welcome... but that was still grating on the ears in some places.

Glam, protopunk, cabaret. It was ok but not rely my bag.

Gang Bang // Vambo Marble Eye // The Last Of The Teenage Idols 2.5/5

Lyrically horrible. Got a kcik out of some of the songs but wouldn't listen again. Glam rock came and went and no-one should miss it.

Sounds a bit like a rock-n-roll album from the 50s but with a modern touch.

Once again, proof that putting superlatives in your band name is a dumb move. Also, two-color horses are not that strange.

Unremarkable glam.

There were two songs I thought were okay, the one where he kept saying next and the last song. Partly because they were so different than the other generic crap on the album and partly because the last song was the end of a not great album. 3/10

I get it, it's 70s glam rock and part of what comes with it is a showman on the mic. But this was the most gratingly obnoxious frontman I've ever come across.

Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Didn’t really do much. Generic swamp rock

Inspiring for everyone with no singing talent watsoever—don't let anyone tell you you can't make music!

glam rock gone wrong??? you think it's gonna be good then it's just not

Intro to the first sing I thought “oh cool I might like this!” By sing three I really didn’t want to hear them anymore. Grating singing voice, nothing all that creative musically.

Exactly what I expected based on cover art, and band name. Not sure I love his vocals, but the music is killer. I love me some blues inspired 70s rock. Definitely heavy on the sex part of the sex, drugs and rock and roll. I was surprised to find out this band was Scottish, and not based out of the southern US. That is, if I hadn't listened to Next. All told, a solid 2/5 effort. Don't get me wrong, I love this genre, but I don't love this album.

I fell asleep at one point, and my brain thought I was listening to the Muppets and I was happy. But alas, this album has no Muppets. 2/5

It's an album devoted to TMI.

Guess it was fairly influential, but didn't really enjoy it that much, was silly but not really in a funny way, more just seemed over the top but not in an appealing way like a Poundland version of Alice Cooper

The 70s were really fucking weird

There ain’t nothing like a what now?

If this was your protopunk I guess that's how you end up sounding like Nick Cave or Robert Smith. Glad others had Iggy Pop instead. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

I thought this would speak to me, it didn’t. Wikipedia references it as being influential in a proto-punk way. Thank god it wasn’t THAT influential.

The title track is horrendous while the 2nd track is abhorrent. While there are a couple of decent tracks I'm not going to listen to this again.

Like a worse T Rex album. Thumbs down

I listened to this while watching Skateboarding at the Olympics, and that was as close to liking it as I was going to get.

Lyrics are quite bad, tunes are quite generic.

- Einige witzige Parts insgesamt aber leider gar nicht meins. - Faith Healer noch der originellste Song. - Hat mich größtenteils gelangweilt 2,5/5

After 11 straight days of 0 to 1 star albums this was a change. I've never heard of Alex Harvey before but I like a couple songs. Those were the ones that sounded as if Ween and Randy Newman made a record. The rest of the album was OK. But enough to make 2 stars.

Knew and loved 'Faith Healer' already, definitely the highlight of an entertaining but inconsistent album. Also heard the ribald 'Next!' but not the even more ribald 'Gangbang'. You can certainly hear the influence on pub rock and AC/DC, and there's flecks of greatness, but a lot of this is silly and frankly irksome. Another one to file in the 'weren't the 70s random' bin.

Lively & fun but meh.
