Reviews (page 4 of 7)
That's not my taste in music - But ok
"Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac?
Kind of the platonic ideal of an okay first listen. Wasn’t familiar with this band at all, dude has an interesting voice, I like about half the songs, it’s 30 minutes long. Bing bang bong. Easy peasy. If I see the album for a couple bucks at a record store, I’d pick it up.
I'll not listen again but it was fun while it lasted
Ain’t nothing’ like a gangbang to blow away the blues
They’re like the Doors - if the Doors were from Glasgow and less good
Not that great. Still better than Oasis.
I appreciate how weird and different this album is. I thought it was a fun experience. But my biggest gripes with the album is it’s so of it’s time that it’s a detriment. And I felt like the humor was lazy and cringey. If this had tried alittle harder in the technical aspect of like the guitar playing and tried maybe a few psychedelic songs I think that could’ve bumped it up alittle. I do think this is like the best band that my dad would love that he’s never heard of. But it’s sadly not really for me.
stupid but fun enough that i can't hate
Reading the wiki, I was able to understand the background that shows the importance of this album and the influence it had on well-known musicians and artists. But musically speaking, I didn't hear anything that made this album special or unique, other than the fact that this guy is really horny. Could someone give this man the cunt? For God's sake...
Musically, I really liked this. Personally, *I* might have written fewer lyrics about gang bangs, but to each their own.
first listen there's something here but haven't loved it first listen
3 maybe 4
It’s like a sex obsessed version of the bay city rollers mixed with the rocky horror show. Likeable though!
I hate that 4 of my 7 albums so far have been 70s blues/rock albums. This one was the weirdest of the lot, although it's bumped up a star by the guy's Scottish accent
Spans the line of 60's pop/rock tunes to early 70's pop/rock stuff. Bluesy vibe to a lot of it in my opinion. Not terrible. Gang bang song is hilarious.
OK, very dated
Honestly, not bad. A little overindulgent. It wants to be cinematic. It wants to be primal. It’s got a strong pulse to it. The production is tight, immersive, and full of movement. Definitely a late-night or background listen more than anything focused. The lyrics don’t do much, and sometimes feel like nonsense for nonsense’s sake. Three songs doing all the work to make this a ⭐⭐⭐ review from me. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Swampsnake - Giddy Up A Ding Dong - Vambo Marble Eye
So... subtlety is not Alex Harvey's strong suit. Songs like "Gang Bang" make AC/DC's "Big Balls" sound deep. Not that that's a BAD thing, really. Although singing about being riddled with gonorrhea does NOT make you sound endearing to me. Decent rock and roll album. But still... yikes. Top tracks: "The Faith Healer," "Last Of The Teenage Idols"
Interesting trivia from Wikipedia: On May 20, 1960, Alex Harvey and his Big Beat Band opened for a band called Johnny Gentle and His Group. Johnny's "group" included some Liverpudlian lads named John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. nbd. Anyway, to this album. It's ok. A little cheesy and pretty dated, but ok. Swampsnake was a good bop. "Ain't nothing like a gang bang" - I cringed and laughed a little. The Faith Healer dragged on (I knew the cover by Fish). Giddy Up a Ding Dong was a decent bop, but not very original. Then there's Next - sounds like a song from a very demented musical and the lyrics are just...wow. Vambo is super dated 70s hard rock, but it's another good bop. The Last of the Teenage Idols lurched from style to style - starting with a dragging ballad-ish beginning, followed by a fast hard rock section...then a section where everything suddenly was only in my left ear, then switched to my right ear before coming back to stereo - I had to figure out if my headphones were breaking - not cool. Then it ended with a 50s style doo-wop. I'm sure they were going for something clever, but to quote Spinal Tap: "It's such a fine line between stupid and clever." Unfortunately, this album wavered over that line a few too many times.
Correcto
I respect the creativity and musicality but none of the actual songs did much for me.
I think this was just like yeah ok. I wouldn't consider it 'sensational' or anything, just pretty mid. I think it was pretty short, a tad uninteresting but overall alright.
Nothing sensational about this
Really interesting album. The first two songs are fairly simple, catchy, raunchy rock tunes, then The Faith Healer comes out of nowhere. From the start of the song it's a departure from what came before. Far longer and more sophisticated, it would sound more appropriate on a Led Zeppelin album than on this one. The song Next is another one that sounds like it came from a completely different album. This one is opera rock and features strings and a totally different style of singing. It's interesting they chose to name the album after this track. Even the final song is like two songs in one. The first half of the song is upbeat rock then it suddenly turns into a reggaefied Beach Boys track. Actually a fascinating album. Favorites: The Faith Healer, Swampsnake
Goofy fun
This was better than I thought it would be. Some of the song topics (e.g. Gang Bang) are ridiculous but, hey, that's rock 'n' roll. Good album.
Chunky, powerful and fun. Would have been better if it had been weirder.
What an unexpected treat. Too many people on this site take themselves a bit too seriously lol
A weird mix of some great guitar/piano with the absolute worst elements of glam rock and the lightly irritating silliness of the 70s British pop charts. I love *some* glam and I'm not averse to a Funky Gibbon or Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, but Giddy Up A Ding Dong... absolutely awful. That said, The Faith Healer was some good proto-metal and I quite enjoyed the Zappa-ish doo-wop at the very end of the album, so not a complete disaster!
The music on Next is undeniably catchy and fun, with a playful, theatrical edge that keeps things interesting. However, the lyrics lean a bit... juvenile at times, which can be off-putting depending on your mood. It’s a wild ride that doesn’t take itself too seriously, for better or worse.
Not sure what genre this is called but I'd say the 'Interesting enough to keep me engaged for the entire run time' genre would be most appropriate.
didn't love it, didn't hate it
Pa dosta kul album, pogotovo sam odlijepila na orgulje/piano, pre pre dobar zvuk 🫶🏻 Fino osvježenje i ugodno iznenađenje, pošto nisam nikad slušala album. Giddy Up A Ding Dong ima baš dobru peglicu. Visokih 3/5, 6.5/10
I liked the first couple of tracks
I enjoyed this. Sounded like a lot of different artists took from this. Nothing outstanding here, but solid.
Interesting artifact. Alex Harvey influences a load of bands. But leaves very little footprint. Worth listening and some fun stuff.
Not bad
Weird but ok
I can't even lie, this was pretty underwhelming for the first major milestone of the challenge: rolling over into triple digits. we'll hit quadruple digits in no time! this is a Scottish glam rock album in the vein of David Bowie's material from around the same time, with a bit of Stooges in there, too. if you're a die-hard UK glam aficionado, I can't recommend this highly enough. but, alas, I find that I'd much rather just listen to Bowie. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band is a pretty tight unit (as demonstrated by the artsy 3-part closer), but these lyrics are just too silly. the sex songs (most of these songs, in some way) sound like they were written by a guy who's never had sex, but who's still trying to brag as if he has. maybe it's supposed to be more tongue-in-cheek than it comes off? or maybe pillow talk is way different in Scotland. strong 5/10.
It has some very interesting songs. I don't necessarily like it as an album.
Seemed okay, didn't listen to a ton as not in the head space for it at work, but it was fine.
A really fun, over the top, bluesy and theatrical album. Guess they were brilliant live, but no matter how influential they were, the album doesn't quite cut it.
Some crazy dad rock going on here, but it was so short and sweet... I think I liked it. Not relevant to this album itself, but the album ended before I realised that Spotify radio started playing and this band for sure has some bangers worth listening to!
Mad, fun over the top and perfectly enjoyable
Very bawdy!
I’ve listened to this album multiple times, I even own it on vinyl, but every listen still confuses me - and as a result leaves me not knowing what to think of it!? I’m unsure if a mid rating is suitable.
eh
76% Best: Swampsnake; Gang Bang; Vambo Marble Eye Must-Hear? Not quite
Rock, 1973 -> 3
Hey, at least this is short. This is punk? I was expecting to hate this, but this was somewhat enjoyable, but then the lyrics took a nosedive. 3*
Najo, 3/5
Dirty text, but nice mix of rock and piano music
Never heard of these guys. Definitely not what I was expecting. Very rockin. Sounds like someone from Iron maiden or one of those hair metal bands that went solo.
I don’t get what’s sensational here. Glad it was short.
ok but not that special
never heard of them before. this was a solid album
A real mixed bag. I really like some of it, but some of it was stupid
As usual, Glam Rock leaves me in between feeling interested in the musical arrangements and rolling my eyes at the lyrical material. There's some great horn playing on this record, which I appreciate, and probably bumps it up a rating. Favorite Tracks - Next, The Last of the Teenage Idols
Actually, that was a pretty decent album. I expected it to be meh, but it was actually not too bad. It was melodic and a bit rock-y, so I assume it was great until maybe the AC/DC days a year later.
Strange yet familiar
Alright.
Next was a bit of a hoot, it's hard to really define but it's both good and awful at the same time :D like a bunch of it wouldn't be out of place in musical theatre and then there's a fair bit of old school rock and roll in there. Nobody's gonna mistake it for quality musicianship but it does a good job of standing out and making me smile, 3/5, would probably listen again too so a high 3 at that.
Ambitious name, good energy, but nothing to write home about.
I can understand how this was a heavy influence to the Punk stuff in the 70s, as it already has quite a lot of the elements which you would expect to hear, especially instrumentally (just listen to midway through the last song) (except these are quite a bit slower generally). Vocally is a bit weird, as I really like it in some places, but not in others (e.g. the Next song). Just realised there are a lot of comparisons to the E-street album (year, amount of songs, length of songs, some of the instrumentation (brass) ). drawbacks are that the vocals can be quite terrible, or poorly aged lyrics. Favourite songs: swampsnake, The faith healer, Vambo marble eye, the last of the teenage idols. Overall around 6/10
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is a pretty entertaining listen. Glam rock is probably the best description. I would listen to this again.
I like this music. Half way through the first song I though this was going to be a 4 or 5 (dumb but super fun). Then Gang Bang. At first I thought it was just dumb, but when they got to the section from the (one) woman's point of view and the words "she was smiling through the tears". Just eesh. That song is terrible and I think exacerbated by the song lengths. Each of these songs could be half as long and still get the job done. And if Gang Bang ad been half as long, it wouldn't have had that particularly atrocious verse. Jesus christ what is this band? Any one of these songs is interesting and entertaining, but this is one of the most disparate albums I have ever heard. Is Next actually a german theater song ala Alabama Song or were they just aping it? (Holy shit, I called it - it's a cover of a song by a Belgian theater composer). Man, I don't know. some of it was 5, some of it actively angered and offended me. I think if it weren't for Gang Bang I'd give it a 4, but that song gets it a 3.
I'm not familiar with this going in to this listen, but the Wikipedia article citing Robert Smith calling Alex Harvey a forefather of punk is enough to get me locked in.
Never heard this before. I didn't mind it but it's not something I could see myself buying. It seemed rather gimmicky.
Thoughts before listening: Never heard of Alex Harvey and do not recognize the album cover. I'm going to guess this was popular in England in the 70s and just from the cover I'll say its similar in style to Rod Stewart...blues based pop rock songs maybe. I don't really know. Review: Well he's not a Rod Stewart copycat although I did get the British part right. This sounds a bit like Alice Cooper to me. Over-the-top glammy blues-based hard rock with a sneering lead singer mainly singing about sex. This is okay although this sound has been done much better by other bands. There is a murkiness to the production on some of these songs that is turning me off, but I do like some of the later songs on the album like "Next" and "The Last of the Teenage Idols". I was going to give this 2-stars, but the more I listen the more its winning me over so I'll say 3-stars.
fun with a some dashes of humor too! Jahas taitaa enemmänkin dashes of irstautta everywhere blood and cum on the ceiling....
Most of the songs starts of in an interesting place but stays there until it becomes tedious and goes well beyond. Proof that good ideas don't make a great songwriter.
That is the right amount of stupid
Interesting
Viihdyttävä setti ja täysin uusi tuttavuus.
Pirskahteleva yllätys, menevä ja hauska
3.0
Not so sensational, just kind of meh! Forgettable glam rock with a touch of weirdness that couldn't move me in any way. I'll reluctantly give it three stars, simply because I could listen to it again, although I wouldn't seek to do so.
Groovy and not previously known.
I know this band mainly because of their influence on AC/DC and Bon Scott. Setting the lyrics aside, Harvey’s vocal delivery is fantastic. It’s so striking that it makes me respect Bon a bit less, knowing he 'borrowed' his vocal style. I'm giving this a 3 because of the direct influences on one of the biggest rock bands in history.
By turns it is either heatrical, childish, inappropriate, glam rock or brilliant.
This was an odd one. It’s interesting but it was difficult to ‘find my way into it.’ I need probably three more listens.
I am familiar with the G.B.H. version of the Last of the Teenage Idols, but didn't know the original. This was fun.
Fine blues rock if you ignore the lyrics
Was ready for the Next album of the day after this Gang Bang of an album.
Fun sound, but it didn't blow me away.
Next.
man has fight with piano, dead heat at half-time
There is no doubt the late Bon Scott was influence by these guys. Some of these songs have aged poorly. (Gang Bang is flat out gross.) Some are great. (Faith Healer is a banger.) It squeaks by with a passing grade due to its influence but the lyrics are icky.
OK, I get it. I get it. You have a dick.
Good sound but not great
Never heard of it before. Piano hard rock or something. I like it. Except the lyrics. They're awful. Favorite song: swampsnake.
Some funny and absurd tracks. Fairly good music, but nothing too exciting. Ok.
Complete bs but so funny
At times this reminded me of bands like Queen and Led Zeppelin. Other times, it felt kind of like a concept album. In between, there was a gang bang. Anyone that gave it 1, I get it. Like wise for anyone that gave it a 5. I’m in the middle.
pretty fun listen, would like to give it a "3/5 with charm"
What the hell was that? I mean, it wasn't bad, just kinda weird and I have no idea why I needed to listen to it. But yeah, sometimes you just need a gang bang to blow the blues away.
Well this is incredibly dumb but a surprisingly large amount of fun
Didn’t know what to expect, but it was okay
Um I genuinely don't know what this is or why it's here, but it's kinda cool. Unfortunately there's also tracks like "Gang Bang" and "Giddy Up a Ding Dong" to counteract the better tracks. Still kinda liked it more than dislikes it though. 2.5/5
A troubled soul. You’d have to see them live to appreciate all the theatricality that went with it.
Quite enjoyed, not much to say
Sounds a bit like Black Sabbath but not as good
Very meh
More theatrical than I like, but a few tracks got my attention
Congratulations to the late Alex Harvey for making the horniest album thus far.
This could be a 4, it's a very interesting album. I really appreciate uniqueness and shorter albums and this hits both of those qualities. There's a lot of different elements going on that are cool some bluesy sounds and other songs that sounded like a musical, but at the end of the day none of the songs really stuck with me so I have to keep it at a 3.
Interesting, varied, and hints of classic songs.
8/29/24. Really enjoyed Alex Harvey's vocals here, very Zeppelin or Billy Squier like, very 70s. Some good arrangements here too, overall a fun one!
Wow, what a ride. Mostly juvenile and silly nonsense, but pretty fun to just hear something completely different and out of the box sometimes. Hard to take it that seriously though.
Uhm is this just rowdy rock blues songs? I guess props for getting songs like "Gang Bang" (it is exactly what you think) and "Swampsnake" (also exactly what you think) on this list. The music is actually quite catchy, bit of a rocky horror vibe to it. Not bad at all.
Eh, it was ok.
Interestingly I understand the praise from Nick Cave. I hear some inspiration for Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and lots of psychedelic music influence. I came out of listening to this better than I expected. 3.5/5
Bit all over the place, the glammier stuff is good though
Southern saloon music. Some of these songs couldve been used for Roadhouse or some dive bar in New Orleans. Lots of storytelling but it gets all disjointed. Giddy Up a Ding Dong is probably the most coherent but it also plays by Rock/Blues traditions.
I like how big and bold and varied this is. There's lots of layers of instruments, different styles being thrown around, theatrical elements, lots of pomp and sass. I like that something like this exists. It's quite confidently out there without being obnoxious, which (after listening to a lot of other albums in this list) I know can be a tricky thing to pull off. 3.5 rounded down.
Sensational might be a bit much, but pretty good. It was funky and bluesy and weird. I liked it.
Probably paved the way for glam metal and were the basis for Spinal Tap, so 3 stars alone for that
Lots of fun music laced with immature lyrics/content. (At least three of the song-titles - and their lyrics - refer to penises and sex, but I guess that kind of puerile joke is someone’s idea of fun.) The Faith Healer is quite good. His rendintion of Scott Walker’s Next, not so much.
There are elements and songs here I like (“Swampsnake”) in particular, but it’s not coming together all the way for me. Interested to see how I feel if I ever revisit it. 3/5
Uninterested
Dunno about sensational, but they were handy with their instruments
Quite ok - nothing "new", but solid blues rock
I must admit this is a very enjoyable glamrock album. "Faith Healer“ and “Swampsnake” are great songs. The rest of the album is not sensational.
A top five song about gangbangs all time fer sure.
This record was surprisingly good. Great distorted guitar riffs and catchy hooks. Side 2 falls off in quality a little bit but still an enjoyable record.
Also July 6th, 2024 HL: “Faith Healer”, title track, “Last of the Teenage Idols” I could be imagining things, but I recall seeing this album cover in a bar in my hometown, which is pretty far from Glasgow. Respectable hard rock, a good album for being downtown at rush hour The book really only gives “Next” and “Faith Healer” as reasons why this is on the list, although “Swampsnake” (catchy) & “Vambo” (kinda annoying) are also highlighted on the tracklist. Oh, also they were apparently great live, which I GUESS you get a sense of through the rollicking, fun performances. The last song sounds like a prototype for how Jim Steinman/Meat Loaf would sell a jillion records 4 years later 3.5
Great surprise, fun album to listen.
Definitely better than expected. Might even have improved without some of the vocals. Nevertheless 3*
Yeah was quite fun.
Enjoyed it more than I expected I would. Imagine, is a strong song though I find it hard to take seriously. I just don’t think it’s genuine. Jealous Guy is an excellent track with a great whistling section, Lennon admitting he’s insecure is kinda surprising. I’m not a Beatles stan so I absolutely found How do You Sleep to be hilariously entertaining, referring to Paul’s solo work as Muzak must’ve cut deep. Inconsistent overall but entertaining nonetheless. 3 stars
2.5/5. This is fine, nothing that sticks out to me. I don't think it's bad, but I don't see the appeal of this.
Quirky but not too interesting for me (2.5/5)
This album was stupid, but fun and entertaining. Sounds like a cross between pub rock and cabaret. This was released 2 years before TNT by ACDC and you can really hear the influence this had.
Never heard of this guy before. You’d think since I’m such a fan of Zappa and Ian Dury I’d really dig this but… I just don’t really. Some was fine but there seemed to be too much Frampton mixed in.
odd, interesting, need another listen
Great sound but the vocals were underwhelming to me at first, for both their range and mixing. This impression would reduce along the tracks. Extra point for Giddy Up. E.M.R.: 4
Well I'll be darned, that was actually a rollicking good time. Debauched and in-yer-face and playful. I found the middle section a bit weaker but this still had enough to set it apart from standard 70s rock fare. 3.5
It's alright
Never heard of this band. I would say the album was better than expected! I thought Next was the highlight.
Reminded me of nick cave and rod stewart. I probably won’t listen again. Just ok
If glam and AC/DC had a baby.
It gets better as it goes on. Eg I never want to hear Gang Bang again, but Next and Teenage Superstar are ace. A mixed bag of an album, but not without it's highs
This is so much fun lol. It's not an essential album and I'm not sure what it's doing in the 1001 book, but they do what they've set out to do. And they do it well while having infectious energy. Most of the time, that's enough. Faith Healer is an exquisite 70s rock jam.
Eh.
Reminds me a lot of Bowie's Aladdin Sane album. Similar atmosphere, with heavy, plodding, bright instrumentation. Piano, electric guitar, brass, and voice are all bombastic and in-your-face. Though, I think I prefer the Bowie rendition of glam rock. The songs here sound a little undercooked. The catchiest track, Gang Bang, also bears the burden of having horrific lyrics. And the lyrics of Next (the title track) are also not great. But the overall sound and mood is consistently fun, glamorous, and overall kinda nifty. Definitely captures the 1973 vibe. This is groovy enough, but the 70s had better offerings. Give me more of those! Next! 3/5 Key tracks: The Faith Healer, Next
Thought this was alright. Gangbang was a hoot. I mostly didn't care for his vocal delivery, but sometimes it really worked. 3/5
I enjoyed this - genuinely reminded me of spinal tap.
Decent 70s rock but not standing out 5/10
Hmm, not sure about this. In parts I thought it was quite good, but in others it was a bit strange. I like his accent. It's a bit showy in parts too, like it belonged in a musical. He's fond of a gang bang it would seem Won't be back but it isn't bad. 2.5
above average rock and roll. sounds inspired though
Batshit crazy, with a few moments of brilliance. Would have loved to have seen these dudes live. But a track like gang bang can gtfo quite frankly. Tell you what though; the first couple of tracks start with 4/4 glam/blues stomp drums and piano stabs... were SAHB tantalisingly close stumbling onto the Chicago House sound about 10 years early? 😅
meh
Decent, fun album. Had never heard of this band before nor any of the songs. Enjoyed it but not to the point that I’ll seek it out. 3 stars
Too stylistically schizophrenic for my tastes really. All sorts of things going on and, as someone else says, it is like it’s the soundtrack to a musical like Rocky Horror. I quite liked some of it and could hear why it may have influenced tonnes of people, but not an album I’d listen to again. Especially not the Glam bits
This is fun. What’s a swampsnake? In some ways I love this and in some ways I find it deeply offensive. It’s garish, but its still oddly compelling to me. Fave Traxks: Swampsnake, Gang Bang, Vambo Marble Eye 3.4/5
funny, energetic record. not to long not to boring. The Topics are something else but it was a good listen in the end. thats a 3.5 for me!
Täähän oli kai tällänen tosi Slade henkinen pumppu. Siltä tosiaan kuulostaa. Lyrsat on aikamoisia paikoitellen.
"Gang Bang" is kind of horrible, and some of this is a bit cheesy, but the rest of this is gleeful and enjoyable. Swaggering operatic glam rock with a hard edge, and you can feel its influence on what came next.
These were the darlings of alternative DJs and progressive musical TV programmes in the early 70s. I remember them being very dramatic and in your face on the old grey whistle test and their performances are still memorable. They were so different to what else was going on. I love their Jacques Brel cover. Histrionic but compelling.
I'd never heard of this guy/band before today, so that was cool. I'm not quite sure what to think about it all, which is also cool. It's very theatrical and glam. Some of the songs were too boogie-woogie for my tastes, but the standouts were ... something. The title track is harrowing and over the top and might even be a damned masterpiece. (It's a Jacques Brel song? Need to know more about it.) Faith Healer was cool and creepy. As was Last of the Teenage Idols. Gang Bang, though, ugh. I read the lyrics. They're not great. So yeah, this dude is over the top and interesting and I'm glad I heard it and I'd even be interested in hearing more, so that's cool. Glad it was part of this project. I wound up checking out some live footage of the band, and they are pretty badass. Overall, though, I think the album is uneven, hence my 3-star rating, but this is a more interesting 3-star album than many 4-star albums are, so that's something.
I enjoyed hearing my office mate laughing while listening to this album more than the album itself. I liked SAHB ok and reading up about them I suspect at that time they hit in Glasgow I might have liked them even more.
It started like an "we have Ozzy Osbourne at home" meme but ended up being an interesting, very varied, rock album. Worth to listen once I guess.
Enjoyed this - good 'ol rock n' roll. The title track was quite odd - not a bad thing. A bit of a mishmash of styles, as the mood swings from The Faith Healer to Giddy Up to Next. But the eclecticism works here. Not one I'd play again often, but intriguing.
A unique sound. At a push I would describe it as Glam Music Hall. It's beefy and playful. There's some power coming out of those vocals. The brass is joyous. Some of the songs you couldn't get away with these days. Gang Bang was interesting. In its favour is that the whole album lasts 35 minutes. All albums should follow the same.
Patchy but when it is good it is great. The opening track is an absolute stormer and the title track is possibly the best version of this song I have heard - perhaps even better than Scott Walker's, which I know is a bold claim, but I love the mania that drives it. The Last of the Teenage Idols is an killer album closer.
Aerosmith, anyone? Bueller? I think maybe they got ahead of themselves with their choice of band names... but I guess it's better than the other way around? Where they'd be massively rich, but named, "The Awful Alex Harvey Band".
I hadn't listened to anything from Alex Harvey until now, so I didn't know what to expect. An oddly amusing record that changes gears often with a variety of styles mixing glam, hard rock and cabaret. Can't say it wasn't interesting and a lot of the sound is given a lush (maybe over produced) production. There really is a song on here called, Gang Bang, right? Bold...
Nothing I've ever heard of before. Giddy up a Ding Dong is horrible. The rest of the album is much better. I really liked their version of "NEXT". Standouts: Next, Swampsnake, 3.5
Some interesting stuff in this album. Some interesting lyrics for sure. There were some parts I really liked, but other than that it feels like a pretty forgettable album.
Didn't get all the way through due to time constraints. I'm sure the rest would have been similar. 4:4 rock and some 70s sentiment
Some pretty solid early 70s rock, but nothing life changing
An album with lots of peaks and valleys. The piano riffs, guitar solos and horn sections are all fantastic. I just wish there was more!
5/10. I appreciate the mystery of whether the album is called Next because it was their 2nd album, or if it's named for the cover of Next that is on the album. But, I didn't appreciate that much else about it
Apparently the city of Cleveland loves this band. 5/10
Fun enough
That’s some fun glam rock that I had never heard before. If it’s good enough for Robert Smith, then it’s good enough for me.
For some reason I thought, “The song “Gang Bang” couldn’t possibly be about what I think it’s about.” Turns out it’s about exactly what I thought. 😂 And am I crazy that it’s actually a jam? I like when a song’s music clashes with the lyrics. But maybe the song actually captures the joy and fun of a gang bang? I think that’s the intent here. And “Giddy Up a Ding Dong”? Yep that one is about his dick. Honestly though, those songs are among my favorites. There’s an impish, dirty humor that Alex Harvey has and the band backs him up 100% and rocks hard regardless of how weird the lyrics get. “Next” was a strange one. It sounds like a twisted musical number. And we’ve actually heard that song on the list before. It was written by Jacques Brel (a French singer on the list) and it was covered by Scott Walker (whose album featuring his version of “Next” was on the list). Fascinating that multiple artists have been drawn to this song. It is good. It’s just such a bold choice to cover. Alex Harvey commits though. I really liked about half of these songs and the other ones made me go, “Wow, okay, that’s a choice.” It could be more consistent but it’s definitely entertaining.
I'm a bit confused... more interesting than your average 2 / more average than a good 3 hmmm
almost good, wish it was a bit more restrained
Silly fun but not great
Trashy glam fun. If I happened to be in a bar where these guys were playing, it would be fairly unobjectionable background noise.
Basically ACDC but not really ACDC
This goes on so many direction. 50s doo wop, cabaret, punk. It's all over the place. And it's okay. Some of the lyrical ideas are rather put there and don't fit the music. But it's okay.
This was 100% on track for a 5-star review. And then I hit "Next" which... what were they even thinking? That didn't need to be a song. And it's so WILDLY different from the rest of the album that it just derailed the whole thing. To their credit, it seems like they tried to pull it back on course with "Vambo Marble Eye" but then it fell apart again a bit on "The Last of the Teenage Idols" which, while not as bad as "Next", is still a thing that didn't need to exist. Just leave the tracks that don't fit off the album, fellas. Play them live, save them for an album full of weirder tracks... something. Don't ruin a good vibe, though.
Absolutely mental.
I like what Robert Smith apparently said "like very aggressive Glaswegian street theatre". It is!! A very gritty funny street theatre, there's a lot of story telling and it's got humour throughout, it doesn't sound very musical theatre at all but I can also imagine a stage troop dancing around to Swampsnake... I enjoyed this quite a lot actually which surprised me. I don't normally warm to a lot of punk but this is quite old school and still more melodic which I do enjoy. I don't like all the guitar solos which can be annoying but they're not too long so that's bearable. The title track Next is fun, I like the intro and it's a great story, even more theatre vibes. Good vibes all round with serious themes delivered with humour and fun. An interesting discovery!
This was cool, I liked it. Had some variation in what genre it was in places but generally I liked it all enough! Great band name.
I have never heard of Alex Harvey, quite the life it seems like. This album was fun, it kind of straddles the all too familiar line between glam and punk which makes sense for the context of this album at the time. A quick hitter, this was very enjoyable.
Quite a sound for 1973. I'm impressed. A great version of Next! Standouts: Next, The Faith Healer Others: Swampsnake, Giddy Up a Ding Dong 3/5
Okay album, not anything special, generic early 70s glam rock, better albums out there that do the same thing but a lot better
Meh punkish stuff.
Decent album. Pretty nice listen.
This one was very hit or miss and quirky. I wouldn’t listen to it regularly.
First time I heard Faith Healer I though it was Bon Scott on the vocal. This and the other great track Next are the standout tracks on what is a very good seventies rock record. Hasn't aged as well as some from the decade.
Ish.
Very weird sounding. Definitely made in the 70s. Has an almost Pink Floyd feel to this album. Songs I liked: Giddy Up a Ding Dong, Next, Vambo Marble Eye. Gang Bang wasn't too bad either 😄
This is a very silly album. Gangbang is a very silly song. Giggy Up A Ding Dong features a keys solo that sounds like a child's keyboard. This record is like if you took an ACDC record, slammed it into a Sabbath record, and then made it listen to a Queen record or two. It is a really weird listen. The stereo fuckery at the end is poorly done.
it was fine but wholly uninteresting besides some out-there lyrics
I fogor 💀
Musically quite varied which was nice but I didn't enjoy his voice, at some parts his singing was just annoying. Overall it's just not my type of glam rock but overall it is an average album.
It was an interesting listen.
Who is Alex Harvey, and what is so sensational about his band? Alex Harvey got his start fronting Alex Harvey's Soul Band throughout the late 50's and early 60's. It was more of a british blues band but who's keeping track? He would develop his performing skills during this time until he went solo, with little success. It wasn't until 1972 that he formed the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, beginning to ride the wave of glam rock that was ushered in by T. Rex, Alice Cooper, and David Bowie. If the "sensational" part of the name means anything, it comes from the performance elements: stage costumes, set pieces, and memorable vocal delivery led to the band becoming a success in the UK. Of course, you only get a third of that sensational element coming through on the record. And while Alex Harvey certainly laid down some solid rock tracks for the 70's, it feels difficult to give him and his band the praise they deserve by just listening to the studio album. Weird note: The spotify version of the last track has a moment where it pans hard to the left channel halfway through and then goes back to being normal in the outro. I'm not sure if this was an artistic mixing choice or a blunder on spotify's part but I hated it. Thankfully that was only in the final minutes of the album.
Odd, fun, and sleazy. An album that doesn't take its self seriously. 7/10
Never heard of this lot, as I'm not knowledgeable of the early 70's era. Ain't nothing like a gang bang to blow away the blues. Need I say more? Glam meets Prog and trips over proto-punk. Heard a lot worse! I can see why Nick Cave liked them so much. When I got to Giddy Up a Ding Dong it sounds almost like Chas N' Dave meets Shakin Stevens, not good at all. Next was 'Next' what rhymes with fear? Gonorrhea! Words were beginning to fail me at this point... but thank god for Vambo Marble Eye to save the day with just sleazy guitars and also the ballad-like intro of 'Last of the Teenage Idols' which brings back a bit of sanity 😂 A very interesting album indeed! I MIGHT give it another listen when I have nothing else to do at all... I'll sleep on it and decide if it's a low 2 or a high 3.
I've had some pretty run of the mill albums recently and this is another one. I know the idea is to broaden our musical horizons but sometimes I'd like something I could enjoy?
Silly and juvenile, but genuinely fun at times.
Pretty good theatrical rock. And that Jacque Brel song
Hey this was alright! Gang Bang is awful though.
It sounded like this had potential to start with but it lost me pretty quickly
Good album
I'll be the judge of whether you are sensational, Alex, and the answer, in short, is you're not. Although it is true that there is nothing like a gang bang.
Some shocking stuff-notably “Gang Bang.” First half beat the second, and I mostly enjoyed it.
Some really intense themes, deeper than its genre compatriots, I think. "Next" is especially affecting. The glam and theatrics detracted a bit from the music... or else it was nice groovy rock but not stupendous.
Good raucous glam rock fun. Fave track: The Last Of The Teenage Idols
Na na hey hey rock and roll is here to stay
I have no memory of this album
rock opera but the genre changes wildly by song
Such a bizarre album. Took me a minute to get what was going on but by the midway point I was entertained.
Fine!
Hmm. Entertaining. Never heard of em before.
I've never participated in a gang bang, but I have to imagine it wouldn't really blow my blues away. I think it would make me more depressed if anything. Having said that, this is fun, raunchy rock n' roll. Sometimes it veers into cabaret territory, which I don't love, but overall it's great. Doesn't take itself too seriously and sounds great. 3 stars.
Might be the horniest album yet?
Very solid, not much to say
mad man
A wild 35-minute ride that careens from symphonic-backed group-sex celebration to paranoid, tango-esque lamentations the next. While held together by a thematic thread, there’s a sense of unruly passion that laces this disparate collection of tracks together into a hell of a good time. Not sure if the songs will hold up in isolation, but even if this is a full-album listen kind of LP I don’t mind taking another spin.
mildly unenjoyable. next was hairable. if i was born in 1958 this would've been my favorite album.
Took me back. This would not have a bunch of air time in Pittsburgh in the day. Reminds me of contemporary groups like Rare Earth and Iron Butterfly
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. The name of the band turned out to be pretty fitting - they WERE pretty sensational. Gang Bang is a hoot and Next made me sit up and take notice. I might listen to more of this.
Listened to this right after listening to the Slade album. Feels like some overlap there, but with a bit more theatricality with these guys? I've never heard of this band before and am now sad to read that Mr. Harvey didn't make it out of the 80s. That's too bad and probably has something to do with why they weren't on my radar. At any rate, I'm intrigued. I mean, there's a song called "Giddy up a Ding Dong," so the odds were good that I'd at least give it a giggle.
Somebody took the term "rock opera" a little too seriously. Best track: Next
/0'er rock, lidt spæd punk-vibe, ganske ok
While I appreciate that this album may have established a couple of standard aspects of glam metal going forward - it just doesn't seem like a good album by modern standards. Vocals and songwriting in particular are greatly subpar. And glam metal just isn't my jam in general. The nice, strong blues rock elements are what saves it from a 2star rating.
This is a pretty normal, average album. While listening I didn’t feel much — it’s fine for a casual listen, but nothing special really stands out. The music is competent and does what it’s supposed to do, but it lacks any real spark or memorable moments. Nothing particularly bad, but also nothing that makes you want to come back to it. It’s just… there. Not much else to say about it. It’s an okay record to put on in the background, but it won’t leave any lasting impression.
I slowly realise that I can't do 50's and all. It's wayy too outdated. I'll listen to it once but can't do multiple listens. There are some whack songs on there and overall didn't really vibe with it much Review - 4/10
Obscene garbage, but I said "hey babe, blow my blues away"
Not really my style, so
Sensational it is not, fine is what it is
RIP my algorithm. 2/5
This one perplexed me. An excruciatingly horny album in many ways, but Alex's over the top theatrical singing actually elevated songs like Gang Bang a bit. Kinda felt like I was listening to an unused alternate soundtrack to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Many other songs were just ok. "Giddy Up A Ding Dong" can giddyup a go fuck off. 2.6/5 - .2 out of principle and because this album is unessential= 2.4/5 -> 2/5
Just so, so bad
Loses a star for the five-minute song about a gang bang
Didn’t need to listen to this before I died
Even as a fan of AC/DC, I found this album to be horribly dull. Is this the sledgehammer wielding Gallagher's music aspiring cousin? Also, having Nick Cave as one of your fans is not something to brag about. This does not a deserve a spot on the list, and not because of the eye raising lyrics, but because they were paired with boring instrumentals.
ts was ass
Pretty camp, like a parody of glam rock. If you don't take it seriously it's all fine, but it's lacking both the musicality of someone like Weird Al and the character of a band like Spinal Tap. Not criminal, not particularly interesting, which puts it in the weird "Why is this on the list?" category. I like the first song where he sounds like Pinky from Pinky and the Brain.
Not for me
I listened to this one, but there was a lot going on so I didn't really LISTEN if you know what I mean. What I heard was interesting but didn't make me stop and take notice... so 2.
Sensational? Probably not. Some really sleazy shit on this, and some other dick-kept-in-pants cool tunes. The closer was fun.
Ok
*1973. Glam rock, shock jock *Super creepy. Sounds like Rock Horror with really sexual lyrics. *Some of the music was fine, but it's hard to get past lyrics like 'ain't nothing but a gang bang'... RATING - 5/10
The Faith Healer
Hm. Okay. Well I actually don't know if I needed to hear this one. I feel kind of slimy about it all to be honest. Next, PLEASE
Weird combo album its not totally bad generous 3.6/10
Who gave this guy a band
No
The track gangbang was written about the Houmous & Chutney tour of 1961. 1.5 1/7 Swampsnake
I was so hopeful for this album but the singer is just not good. 2/5
Giddy Up A Ding Dong really bothered me. I know all the bands around the time were probably putting the same schtick in their albums, and those didn't bother me, but this one pushed my buttons. It's like they put it in as a parody....not of the song itself, but of the instinct of bands to throw in a cover of a 50s song that sounds lewd.
bleh
There are flashes of musical creativity that excite me here but overall it’s just too messy chaotic and ends up incoherent
How is this on this list?
Has a song about Gang Bangs. Weird record. Musically not terrible.
This was the first album I got on this list. On my first go round, I didn’t have the confidence or context to make a definitive statement about this album. Now, with 274 album reviews behind me, I can say with some assurance: I don’t like this album. Original review: It had its highlights, but much of it felt resigned to shock rock. The missing link between Mott the Hoople and AC/DC. Rating remains unchanged.
I can think of at least a dozen other things that would be more effective against the blues. (RE: "Gang Bang")
Top 100 horniest albums of all time
dont know how to feel
"Sensational" indeed. There were a few neat moments on this record, but not enough to outweigh the overall boredom I tend to find with albums that sound like this. 4/10.
Alex Harvey goes dumb stupid, but admittedly rocks pretty hard at certain points. I can't possibly conceive how this album belongs in the 1001 list, but if Robert Smith and Nick Cave somehow hold this guy in high regard I guess I can't argue with it. Standouts: Swampsnake • Gang Bang • The Last Of The Teenage Idols
I enjoyed the stomp of Vambo Marble Eye - but the rest was pretty basic. The drawling delivery on Next was very annoying and less said about Gang Bang the better.
Next I always thought these were a folk band, rather than a glam-blues-rock band with a strong Playground Bang Around vibe. Musically it has some decent moments, and it has a really nice polished 70s glam rock sound, particularly in the guitars and horns. However I didn’t really like many of the songs, either for the sub Alice Copper Rocky Horror cabaret in a pub vibes, his overwrought but oddly characterless voice, or the seedy, icky lyrics. I’m not sure whether it's somewhat tongue in cheek, it may very well be, but it all felt a bit tawdry and try hard to me, particularly Swampsnake, Gang Bang and The Last of the Teenage Idols. Also Now is truly a terrible song. I did like the intro and wah wah of Vambo Marble Eye, but the only song I really liked was The Faith Healer, a great, pulsing track where their creepy lyrical tendencies actually suit the subject matter of a con artist faith healer. It’s not a true one star basement dweller, it’s close but it's not as bad as some albums we’ve had and The Faith Healer does redeem it a little, so I’ll go 2. ⏭️⏭️ Playlist submission: The Faith Healer
2.2 Wow. Very disappointing. Pretty sure my dad loves this guy so I was expecting great things... now I'm wondering if I got the wrong person! So many terrible songs on here. The awful tonky gang bang. The unrequested and unwanted le-mis-esque Next. The unnecessary Jailhouse Rock rip off with an annoying title to boot. The other tepid tracks couldn't save it from being a crap album. Will never be listening again.
Listening to this album was an experience. I can honestly say I had no clue what was going to happen next and there seemed to be no limitations to what he would say. I can see how this could have influenced quite a few artists. It must have been a trip to see this live.
This has many of the hallmarks that critics love about glam rock: it’s raunchy, it’s edgy, it’s heavy, and it’s (kind of) weird. Unfortunately, it fails to be good.
Oooh look at us we're a big rock n' roll band. A few times they showed they were capable of writing decent rock hits, but almost everything ended up sounding pretentious
This is not for me.
Not only is this album boring and generic, but it also feels that it was done in bad taste, as the lyrics can be very uncomfortable to listen/read to. While describing this as generic, I don't think it reaches the point of being monotone or one dimensional. The generic aspect comes from the stereotypical rock progressions, melodies, riffs and solos, but as I said, not every song is equal. For example, "Gang Bang" shows influence in the glam rock sound, "Giddy Up a Ding Dong" has the very cliche and more traditional rock chords and "The Faith Healer" is like a build-up that has an incredibly boring progression that never pays off. What I can say about the instrumentation is that it is decent at best, something I cannot say about the singing or lyrics, which are boring or even painful. The singing is a bit irritating, specially in the opening "Swampsnake", and has little to not emotional value, even though I'll have to give the singer some credit for being quite unique. Then comes the absurdly terrible lyrics, which can be totally meaningless or gross, like in "Gang Bang" or "Next". As much as I dislike this, I am surprised I don't hate it more than I do. Guess not being monotone and being short played a big role.
Well this was surprising. A Glasgow band! Very raunchy. Very immature. Really interesting sound though. Quite a jumpy, energetic swing to it.
This was a strange album. It’s got that zany 70s rock side. It was enjoyable, even if nothing really stood out as entirely memorable.
Who?! Never heard of him and was shocked to find this was remastered in 2002. That voice jumps out at you don't it?! 1973 was a rockin' time and "Gang Bang" was something you could sing about. Every song title has sexual undertones, it must have rocked the boat in England way back then. The hit, "The Faith Healer" at 7 minutes long with 2.8M listens in 50 years, was dreadful and never went anywhere. The title song was worse, what was that?! So theatrical and irritating to listen to. Not a decent song in the bunch, he's questionable as a singer and the musicianship was very average and not mixed well. Not enjoyable. 2 stars.
Maybe I wasn't in the right mood. The silly rock and roll gets a high 2 from me this time.
