Reviews (page 7 of 14)
I live here musically
I quite like
Highlights: Jacqueline, Take Me Out, The Dark of the Matinee, Darts of Pleasure. In a nutshell: Sexy, witty, slick and catchy as all hell. Yes, yes, I get the comparisons to The Strokes, BUT Franz Ferdinand did it better. Jacqueline is an underrated opener. Take Me Out still gets your toes tapping. All this and more from a debut album. Nostalgia might be tainting my review, but fuck it. This album still kicks ass. Overall: 8/10
Thoughts before listening: I was into this album and "Take Me Out" is a great song. I seem to remember liking at least one or two more from this album as well. This is certainly one of the better 00s indie rock albums, but I don't feel it's a greatest album of all time. Review: I had forgotten how much I enjoy this album. I don't believe I ever had the CD, but I definitely had these MP3s on my iPod. The style here is very reminiscent of other 00s era indie bands i.e. Modest Mouse, Spoon, the Strokes, etc, but Franz Ferdinand wrote some great songs that make them rise above that crowded genre. "Take Me Out" is definitely the star here, but it's not the only high point on this album. I also really enjoy "Jacqueline", "The Dark of the Matinee", "This Fire", "Darts of Pleasure", and "Michael" which all show that these guys had a lot more to them than just one hit. Perhaps it's just my own preference for the 00s indie sound as compared to 80s new wave, but if I'm comparing this against other recent one hit wonder albums I've heard on this list like a-Ha, I'm choosing FF every time. This is a 4-star album.
I'm quite surprised by how much I ended up liking this. I tried it before last year and couldnt go into it. Perhaps the timing is right today, because it struck a chord. The guitar work is a bit poppy/indie, easy listening really. Quite fun. Reminds me of the strokes - a British/scottish strokes perhaps. Found a lot of songs I ended up liking a lot. Eg, Jaqueline, 40' (great album ender, great guitar work - ended on a high) and my favourite, Darts of pleasure. Really this is more of a 3.5, because 'technically' I'm not so sure this music is doing anything mad. But it was a quick easy listen, and I'd check it out again.
Did not realize this album is 20 years old, I still hear Take Me Out like every time I turn on the radio. Good album, never really heard more than the singles. Really enjoy the bass guitar tone, solid musically.
lots of absolute bangers, 2000s indie rock which is a genre i have had a long appreciation for. also recently watched cyberpunk edgerunners which uses 'this fire' as a great intro track.
Good album. One of the first ricks songs I liked was Take Mr Out. Finally nice to listen to the album where it debut. 8/10
Forgotten how much I liked this at the time, and surprised how fresh it still sounds
TAKE ME OUT
Previous Familiarity: High. I bought this album when it came out in 2004. "Take Me Out" defined a new extension of the garage rock revival that the Strokes and White Stripes helped usher in in the early 2000's. Franz Ferdinand managed to mix the angular guitars of The Strokes, with the crooning singalong vocals and bombast of 90's Britpop. I think The Strokes took notes, as they seemed to borrow a lot of style from Franz Ferdinand on subsequent albums. Too bad Franz could keep up with their hype and faded away as quickly as they appeared. But, this flash in the pan was pretty nice!
Looking forward to this album but I didn't really the first 2 song. However, after that I loved the album.
I really like the sound of the guitars and most of the songs were good to great.
A modern indie-classic! Take Me Out slaps
Hhvfg
Good album, definitely something I wish I had found when I was younger
Teen nostalgia!
An old favourite
I always loved this band. This was great overall. 4 stars!
Pretty good album, but I don’t know if I will return to it.
You never have to wonder what you're getting with Franz Ferdinand. They're that fun rock sound that they along with a few others really embraced in the early/mid 2000s. Some people love it, some people hate it. But this was a good album through and through. Not perfect. They along with Jack White need to find a closer relationship with a guitar tuner at times, but still an enjoyable, fun experience.
I knew some of their songs already but didn't really know who sung them. I would actively seek out their stuff now.
Like it, especially their hit "Take Me Out".
This was a great album, I listened to it when it first came out.
I don't know what I expected when I took Franz Ferdinand out for a spin. This isn't it. But I love it!
8/10
Wall to wall bangers
Der er en lille håndfuld bangers Hele pladen lyder ret unikt af dem.
very nice album with their unique style that kinda boomed into a couple other bands with hit included
Good album with a some catchy songs that get completely overlooked by Take Me Out. 4/5
good listen bit samey
Wanted to love it. Was just pretty good
Jacqueline - 4.05/5 quite shrill. i enjoyed the beginning though Tell her tonight - 3.6/5 funky but repetitive and i don't like when it switched minor to major keys. I cant stand when songs do that Take me out - 4.89/5 one of the few songs that pulls off a gradual tempo change correctly and in a way that sounds good. The dark of the matinee - 4.41/5 wow how have I never heard this before Auf Achse - 4.52/5 something about the build up to the explosive choruses hits so right. still shrill but not bad Cheating on you - 3.79/5 so shrill i had to turn down and take away from the experience This Fire - 4.48/5 cyberpunk Darts of pleasure - 4.27/5 dont like the key change but i like the drums Michael - 3.94/5 holy hell he's gay Come on home - 4.37/5 40' - 4.26/5 solo is amazing a controlled yet ever slipping chaotic symphony forged in rebellion. 4.3/5
I liked it alot, 4 stars
Solid 2000s rock album. Take me out still goes hard to this day.
I do like Franz Ferdinand (the band) but they are one of the bands where I really like some stuff, don't care for other stuff, and then certain stuff I like but it soon grows tired. This album was exactly like that on the first couple listens. But I didn't have time to rate the album so I just kept playing it over and over. And it grew on me, and some stuff that felt tired actually got better. It's an imperfect and perhaps not quite worthy 4, but a 4 nonetheless. Great songs from the beginning are Jacqueline, Take Me Out (because yeah, that's why most people first paid attention to these guys), This Fire (also a big hit from the get-go). And great songs after several listens are The Dark of the Matinee, Auf Achse, Cheating on You, Darts of Pleasure, and Michael (so much so it might be my favorite on the album - great beat and cheeky, gender-bending lyrics that I came to know them for).
Fun post-punk music and it recalls a time in the early 2000's when this type of music was found everywhere. A good listen and I think this album deserves a place on the list. Saying all that, I don't re-visit this album too often.
Noch nie von der Band gehört. Gefiel mir aber von sofort an sehr gut. Btw spitzen Band Name :). Favorit: The Dark Of The Matinée 4.3
Gefällt mir. Würde ich auch live anhören. 7.5/10
This is actually a decent album
Yeah it holds up
They can probably take this one out
Haven’t ever actually listened to this all the way through until now. This Fire.
It's good, reminds me of high school
CD
November 22, 2023 The Strokes listen to Can and move to Scotland
Maschine: Nectar Bee Mische: 1A, interessante (mit Bee) prominente Bassläufe Musik: Premium Rock-Dance mit Stil, aber nicht nur Killer auf der Scheibe Meinung: 4/5
I could’ve sworn this had already appeared 🤔 Anyways, cool album. More than many other ”Post-punk revival” bands, Franz Ferdinand have one leg in the post-punk past and the other in the revival present
Great listening to this after a long time. Really enjoying it when it came out and was good to get back to it.
Good album! Didn't love every song, but good overall :)
First Listen: Jacqueline- 7/10 Tell Her Tonight- 6/10 Take Me Out- 8/10 The Dark of the Matinee- 7/10 Auf Achse- 7/10 Cheating on You - 6/10 This Fire- 6/10 Darts of Pleasure- 7/10 Michael- 8/10 Come on Home- 8/10 '40- 7/10 Total- 77/110 = 70%
Solid rock album that brings back solid memories! 4/5
I love the energy on this record. Lots of driving, catchy rhythms. There's some other interesting things going on instrumentally, with some nice organ keys and so on. Take Me Out is obviously a big hit. I'm definitely going to re-visit.
Great indie album
Take Me Out demeure un des meilleurs simples pop-rock des années 2000.
One of my favorite albums of the era. Just walk to wall bangers.
good album
One of the better garage rock revival bands of this era
very good. was stoned so all i remember was thinking it was very good. and i listened to the matinee one after like that on my playlist 👍
I remember this coming out, when I thought I was too cool for popular indie records, but damn the singles were pretty catchy. Now that i have no delusions of being cool, I'm warmly surprised by the album! It has strong garage rock and post-punk sounds, but softened into radio-friendly indie. The energy is good and there are some earworms on here. Compared to most mediocre British indie on this list, this is pretty rocking. 4*
Bonus points for real guitar and drums. Very entertaining stuff. Never listened to the whole album before. The hit, Take Me Out, is a standout. But the whole album is great.
Take me out, classic
Album of an Era. The gasping British drumming is the early 2000s. Touches of the Talking Heads with the driving, wine-soaked British guitar and lyrics. When you need to dance, you dance. A little too long. A 10 tracker would have been perfect.
From 2023's perspective, my impression was that Franz Ferdinand are an irrelevant landfill name: when I drew this album, I scoffed in disbelief. The hacks behind one-hit-wonder "Take Me Out"? Really? I was surprised to read that this debut album was avidly lapped up by the press and secured the band as a jewel of the early 2000's post-punk revival. I was even more surprised when I ended up enjoying it over several listens. It isn't hard to feel the charm of Franz Ferdinand. There's a swaggering attitude running through this album, as the band bring their take on a genre which was attempting to restore some edge to rock music. Alex Kapranos' vocals are equal parts guttural howl and moody brooding, encapsulating the genre. His guitar lines are melodic, clean and insistent: they can hover round the same notes, but must attack on every single half-beat! Then there are Paul Thomson's rippling drum lines with sizzling hi-hats and military precision, disco-leaning while always driving the songs forward. The band display a good aptitude for unconventional song structures: while opener "Jacqueline" begins with a mellow intro accompanied by a lone strummed guitar, it soon explodes into a jagged little punk jam. Standout "The Dark of the Matinee" has slow, atmospheric verses which deftly switch up into a darkly cabaret-esque hook. And let the records state that "Take Me Out" is indeed an excellent track, with a perfectly executed bait-and-switch after the first minute slows into a rock-steady groove and instantly iconic guitar part. Elsewhere, there are some decent straight-ahead rockers, which might not break the mould but sit comfortably within it. "This Fire" is a stomper with a raging, addictive refrain. "Tell Her Tonight" seamlessly blends Gang of Four style verses with an early Beatles chorus. And "Michael" is one of the most front-to-back parties on the record. The main criticism that can be levelled against Franz Ferdinand is that they aren't particularly innovative, and the sonic template of this album can be traced back to innumerable post-punk acts of the late 70s and early 80s. But is this a fair criticism? Perhaps it depends on one's mood: these songs are either lovably familiar or a cheap hall of mirrors of influences. In the end, I'm going to be led by goodwill, happy to have been won over by an enjoyable, tight record.
really awesome music, didn’t finish it
Would listen again
Take me out is still my favorite but really liked it - have never heard the others before
Very much a heavyweight of the noughties indie that soundtracked my early 20s, they were completely overplayed but they have some really good songs. It's short enough so it ends as they start running out of ideas. The faux posh English accents get on my nerves, not sure why they sing like that. Would be better if they took a few more experimental turns but despite the negativity of this review it's generally great.
It is what it is. Take Me Out, Dark of the Matinee, Auf Achse, and Come on Home are bangers.
Power driven tracks somewhat similar but still was able to listen straight through... sometimes you can't get past the first 10 seconds with some of the other artists this site has pushed me to.
Great alt rock album, Take Me Out and This Fire bring me back to adolescence
Fun, catchy pop.
I wasn't an immediate fan when this came out but it really grew on me over time. I think my initial reaction was to hearing it too often at every restaurant, bar and hip store while living in Brooklyn when it dropped. I think it holds up better than some other records of the era now.
Always loved Take Me Out and always will. Gave me some extra listening for sure 😌
Very enjoyable album, glad I listened
3,7
amazing post-punk revival. From start to finish almost every song is enjoyable, dancey.
Early 2000s indie fare. Was good to hear it again in full after so many years.
really good
Good indie 3.7
I like this album a lot, though I haven't heard any of these songs in several years. But they still sound good to these ears!
Liked this since it was new. Was really into this band for a minute in 2004-2005. 4/5
Short and sweet with a couple really good songs on it ("This Fire" being a standout for me). Wonderful, better than I expected.
I don't think I have ever seen a review that figured these folks out. Subtly wackadoo and definitely worth a listen.
Ggg
At the time of their release I never paid much attention to Franz Ferdinand but I can see why their discoesque, powerful but still sophisticated style has something to it.
This album takes me back. The year I finished high school.
Only had heard "Take Me Out", thought that was going to be the only good song, turns out there are plenty of great songs on this album, pleasantly suprised
remember flogging this a lot when it came out..... its still OK, but i can wait another 10 years till i listen to it again
Cool album. I never really gave FF too much thought, but I hear the cool new wave / punk influence and they did an album with Sparks, so they’ve gotta be at least kind of cool.
3 very good hits Catchy Rhythms Well played bass Nice pace changes
3.6 one of the most solid indie rock albums i've listened to tbh faves: dark of the matinee, take me out, cheating on you
мило приятно стильно
Another great album where I recognized a few lyrics, relish I knew about them sooner!
Meh
I liked this album has some very recognizable songs, Added to my lib.
The perfect example of mainstream indie rock with a hint of post punk done right!
Nostalgiaryöppy on minulle armoton, mutta niin on tämä levykin. Vauhti! Ei voi olla tanssimatta! Loppupuoli kyllä laantuu liikaa.
This is the kind of indie-rock that I like. They've got their own sound and it doesn't sound like all the other indie-bands. The song "Take Me Out" is a modern classic and the rest holds up well but aren't as iconic. 4.5 stars.
Mixing the edginess of The White Stripes with the energy of The Hives, Scotland’s answer to the growing garage rock-revival movement only increased its pop appeal and longevity Favourite tracks: Jacqueline, Tell Her Tonight, Take Me Out, Matinée, Auf Achse, This Fire, Darts of Pleasure, Michael
Objectively a good album but forever ruined by how cool I was in 2005.
Really solid album. Good songs throughout. 8/10
Here's another good album that I was totally unaware of prior to diving into the list. Don't know if it's typical of Scottish rock but I found it pure dead brilliant, I did!
Like an athlete on the start line of the Olympic 100 metres. Not an ounce of fat anywhere, from the starting note to the crossing the finishing line it’s a winner.
Better than I remember it being.
I enjoyed this album & this era of rock. Take Me Out will always be a favorite. Fun listen.
7.5/10 fave: the dark of the matinee
Favourites: • Take Me Out • The Dark of the Matinée
Refreshing Indie, not much more to say
Dog this smacked hard af
Light hearted, catchy fun
Me gusta este disco. Qué gran baño de agua fría supuso allá en los ya lejanos dos miles
Pretty good! not what i would consider essential. Favorite Tracks: Take Me Out, Auf Achse 3.5-4/5
Un très bon album de Franz Ferdinand qui débouchera malheureusement sur l'assassinat de celui-ci et indirectement sur la Première Guerre mondiale. On a connu meilleurs dénouements.
🟦 86 🥇 Michael 🥈 Jacqueline 🥉 Take Me Out
Plenty has been written about this album, so I’ll leave the review to Simon Fernand of BBC Music: “[Franz Ferdinand] may not be a particularly long album, but it is a masterpiece of funky, punky, suave cool from the first track to the last."
I saw them live once, great energy, great show. Their sound is very distinct and I really enjoy it.
Simple, vibrant rock. Lots of energy, great guitars, driving rhythm throughout, strong songs. Really nothing to criticize for me. Best song: The Dark of the Matinee
Enjoyable post punk revival with more 60s/70s influence than expected I liked it a bit but it was quite repetitive
Fun, energetic songs. Michael was fun, too. :)
Highlights: Take Me Out, The Dark Of The Matinee, 40' Leave Em's: This Fire, Michael Overall Thoughts: I had a lot of fun with this album. This album embodies what I wish most indie albums sounded like. It sounds like they took their time with balancing the production and tried to make it sound good, which I can't say for all the indie/rock albums I have heard. It caught me somewhat off-guard too since I haven't really enjoyed any of the non-American albums I've listened to so far. Despite liking the experience as a whole, there were surely songs that I didn't love and detracted from the overall rating of the album. All in all, I can tolerate some of the repetitive and not so interesting songs in exchange for some of the compelling and awesome stuff on this record. Score Breakdown: 3.309 & 4 -> 3.655
This album made me read multiple articles about “Landfill Indie.” After much reading, I’ve determined Franz Ferdinand is not “Landfill Indie.” I feel like in the US all this band is known for is “Take Me Out” which I’m kind of tired of hearing but they have a lot more to offer and I’m glad I got to listen to it.
I remember back in the early 00s I would confuse FF with The Killers and vice versa. Definitely a certain musical vibe that was emerging back then that was calling back to earlier 60s style of rock with variations. Metal and Grunge were the dominant genres until the late 90s. Right at the end of the 90s, Emo, Pop punk, Alternative, and Indie Rock began to emerge into mainstream culture. I think about the Hives and Ok Go who were also popular during this period of time -- as well as the cultural influences from Austin Powers and this nostalgic 60s movement. "Take Me Out" is what I know FF for, but this isn't a terrible album.
I was rather obsessed with this album when it came out, it still holds up pretty dang well IMHO, a few of the other songs are just as good as the singles. Solid.
A fantastic album, lots of great songs
Take me out
I mean Take Me Out alone gives you 3 stars. then the other 10 songs gives you 1 star. 4
Understandable how this album started their raise famedom
Never listened all the way through. Probably wouldn't have done were it not for 1001 Albums. Glad I did, it's full of bangers! Good trip down memory lane to my formative years.
4/5?
Pretty good. A little rock, a little alt, charismatic vocals. A few catchy tracks that get a little tiresome by the 15th listen
Sometime back in the mid-aughts, I bought this album, because I loved "Take Me Out," and I'd heard that the album as a whole was supposed to be incredible. I listened through it once, but it wasn't really my jam back then, so I've never revisited it until now. While this may not have been completely my jam back when I bought it, I really enjoyed listening to it today. Franz Ferdinand manages to create an incredibly unique sound on this album, with guitars that range from jangling to slamming with power, sometimes in the same song. The drumming is crisp and tight, the bass provides the perfect punch, and Alex Kapranos's vocals are smooth and rich. "Take Me Out" is still my favorite track on this album, but "In The Dark of The Matinee" and "Michael" are also fantastic. This is a great album, and I'm glad I got to give it another listen today.
Easy 4
Classic Franz Ferdinand. Take Me Out will always be a banger
Heerlijk nostalgisch album, indie rock uit de 00’s verdienen meer plekken op deze lijst
Solid
first reaction: hell yeahhhhhhh never listened to this album back to back, but DO love some of the songs on it already
Pretty great, dunno why I never listened before. Only really knew Take Me Out, but enjoyed the whole album. Didn't really listen to the lyrics, they could be amazing or stupid, but the sound of the album was great.
Great album, 8/10
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Jacqueline, Tell her tonight, Take me out, Michael
The celebration I had when I saw the cover pop up was insane; Take Me Out may be one of my favourite songs and for an album I have never listened to it was really good: enjoyed the rock elements and the bop it gave me when i was going through my revision. Overall I really enjoyed it.
A nice byproduct of the Strokes and the garage rock movement of the early 2000s. This one pleases my ears a lot more than Is This It does.
Bought this when it came out. Still slaps.
Feel-good-rock.
wow. this album is better than i remember, it has pep, swing, energy, jangle, bounce, fun. it stands the test of time. franz ferdinand’s ubiquitous single and surrounding tracks create a whole that is enticing and delightful to the ear. way to go at being good brit rockers, yo.
4.5
I'm struggling to rank this album. I enjoy listening to this album. Clean production. The bass and drums are straight forward with some fun little flourishes. Not a big fan of his voice but it's accessible to sing along. Even though I like the style, I think it's too much of the same and somewhat tiresome after awhile. On the other hand, the sameness defines their sound which I admire. I'll lean to the high side and give it 4 stars.
This didn't quite click with me when it first came out. Glad I gave it another listen today as it's quite fun. It's a bit same-y and maybe a song or two too long, but overall, I enjoyed the energy and drama. And that singer totally makes (or breaks) the band. It's probably more like a 3.5 for me, but I'm feeling good today.
delish
These guys were better than I remembered them being. Solid album
This was a new sound when it came out. Enjoyable memories of Ginny at the time. Love the hits and a few more.
Excellent. 4/5 Outstanding Album. Standouts: This Fire, Michael, Darts of Treasure, Take Me Out, The Dark of the Matinee, Jacqueline, 40.
This is an example of great art rock. I throughly enjoyed every song on the album. My favorites were “Take Me Out” and “Michael”.
I've always felt a little "meh" about their hits, but I enjoyed this album overall
Weak 4. I think it's pretty listen-to-able. Tell Her Tonight just sounds like "Gonna have Nutella tonight" though
Pero cómooooo?!
A great album, but Arctic Monkeys takes the edge for me
I've always liked this band.
Wow this was much better than anticipated. I thought they were a one hit wonder.
Have listened to this in the past and it's got a really crisp sound. When it first came out it was a cool breath of fresh air
En stark början på albumet, catchy låtar med bra tryck. Man förstår varför Take Me Out är deras mest spelade låt, en riktigt stabil rocklåt. Kan inte säga att det finns en enda svag låt, alla låtarna bra. Ingen som smäller av riktigt ordentligt, men ett otroligt bra snitt på albumet.
Rock on !
it's classy, dirty and powerful a rock classic from 2000
Jacqueline: 4/5. The kind of upbeat that motivates you. Tell Her Tonight: 3/5. Not bad but the high pitch sounds a bit whiny. Take Me Out: 5/5. No way, it's this band that sang this song?! The Dark of the Matinée: 4/5. I dig the opening and all the rest. Auf Achse: 5/5. Great build-up and strong narration. What's not to like! Cheating on You: 3/5. An unexpected drop in quality. This Fire: 4/5. Don't admit to crimes, especially not in songs! But this is fire. Darts of Pressure: 3/5. It's alright. Michael: 3/5. Did Michael come and dance with him? Come on Home: 3/5. Dynamic start but gets slow in the end. 40': 4/5. Kind of like a serenade, good stuff.
Very fun album and one I would have loved had it came out 2 years later when I first really got into indie rock. Probably the catchiest album we've had so far. Only real complaint is a couple of the tracks are a bit same-y.
Pretty catchy pop
Fun album with some really good songs that drags a bit at times.
Funky punky agit pop. A cut above the usual landfill indie that I feel I dismissed on its release. Solid album tracks beyond the singles. There is a genuine charm to this debut that I overlooked.
Art indie, mielenkiintoinen kuunteluhetki
Definitely a fun listen. Turns out they are more than just Take Me Out!
This was not included in the 2018 revision of the book anymore. I think it should be. It's better than a lot of other albums on the list. The late 60s/early 70s are overrepresented. Favorite song: 40 feet
Good album, I like the driving bass lines, it was an interesting mix of styles. Take me out was a big hit off this album.
Decent album. A lot of the songs sound similar to one another after a while. I really dig the angular nature of their guitar work while the vocals tend to soar a bit rounding out the sound.
Sleek, shiny and super catchy. Precision engineered, indie rock of the early aughts. Still sounds fresh but almost cliched at time, given how redolent it is of its time. "Take Me Out" is world-class hooky and "Come on Home" makes a nice (not-quite) bookend.
Bangers all the way through and super fun to revisit!
I only knew the song "Take Me Out" from this album, which is of course absolutely iconic and has a life all its own. But I was pleased to hear that the rest of the album carries the same spirit. "Take Me Out" is still the star of the show, but the energy and sound of the other tracks really are good on their own, and the album as a whole has a cohesive, enjoyable sound. This album is rife with sounds of post-punk goodness; while punk pop bands were keeping people occupied in the current state of affairs of 2004, Franz Ferdinand was paving the way with this freshman album, setting the stage for other bands that would become popular in the years to come. Not only did Franz Ferdinand take part in pioneering this sound, but they ALSO excelled at it on this album, and it's easy to see where they'd be a major influence for other post-punk acts to follow, such as Panic at the Disco. The sound, lyrics, and delivery is just so fresh, energetic, and fun here. Again, having really only had exposure to "Take Me Out" for all these years, I was expecting the rest of this album to fizzle out. I was glad to be proven wrong by an album that, in my opinion, had steady stamina from beginning to end and clearly knew what it was trying to achieve!
I really liked Take Me Out when I first heard it in the car on the way to (or back from?) school, but I was initially sceptical about the hype surrounding Franz Ferdinand for some reason (I think it's because I was always sceptical about hype...) Anyway, I got over it and lucky I did, because this is a great album that hasn't diminished with age. No duds on here, just a lean set of tunes in a distinctive style that's ominous but danceable at the same time.
Everything in music has been done before. To some extent, that an inescapable truism. Be it a general melody or just a riff, you've heard it somewhere else before. There was so much of this album that made me think of something else I had heard before in songs from different eras and genres. But there is more to music than notes on a page. The arrangement, emotion, and chemistry of a performance makes even a remake better. Franz Ferdinand's songs all sounded familiar yet different. What made them different also made them stand on their own as strong recordings that came together as an album that was more than just covers and samplings of other songs. I enjoyed listening to it. But would I give it a three or four star rating? If I was in the mood for listing to this type of music, would I go to familiar, tried and true albums that I know I enjoy listening to? Or would I spend my listening time playing this again? An album that carries no personal connect by a group I know nothing about? Would I add any of it to a playlist? After listening to it twice, I think I would choose to spin it up again or add it to a playlist. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
What a refreshing album. It's always fun to experiment and iterate on different genres, but there's always something special about sticking to a sound and absolutely nailing it. This is a classic 2000s rock record. All the foundations of the genre are evident and Franz Ferdinand delivers it so stunningly. Makes me long for the days when music like this ruled the airwaves - we are sorely lacking electric guitars now and that is a tragedy. It's not quite a five-star record since there are some tracks that don't match up to the highs, but this debut is an easy 4.5. Standout tracks are Jacqueline, 40', This Fire, and obviously Take Me Out.
Decent album. Couple of bops
Not to my taste but I recognize it as influential
mt my style but sounds good
Enjoyable album. Lots of catchy hooks. Good for doing dishes.
Pretty class, takes me back to TRSMT. Full of bangers
Now this is a blast from the past. This was one of the first albums I ever listened to and I'm happy to report that it stills rocks. I've heard these songs more times than the amount of oppressed minorities in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Especially the big hits like "Take Me Out", "Jacqueline", "This Fire" and "The Dark of the Matinée". Great album to listen to on a trip to Sarajevo.
Just a good, upbeat rock album.
Huge nostalgia. Prime indie rock for me
This is super high grade Indie. Intelligent catchy quirky tunes. There's a lot of these bands popped up at the time but this is a standout moment.
Fully-formed from the outset.
6/11, 55%
Great modern indie/pop rock. Wish there was more modern music coming out like this
Post punk? Neo-garage? Just plain good rock. The angular guitar and strong hooks work for me. It is a bit inconsistent, but the highs are pretty awesome.
Good, solid album.
One of the stronger showings of this mid-2000's garage rock sound. Very fun, dancey, and vibeable, but it doesn't quite reach as high as some of its contemporaries like The Strokes or The White Stripes.
I'm here for Franz. I love the attitude, energy, and intelligence of this self-titled album so much. Sure, it strays into silly areas at times but always with a tongue-in-cheek self-awareness that gives the listener the impression that Franz is giving them a cheeky wink as he does so. And he always brings it back around before it becomes annoying. It's also really hard to argue against tracks like "Take Me Out", "The Dark Of The Matinee", and "This Fire" - they're just so good. Is it a perfect album? No, not really. It's rough and, at times, that roughness is unpleasant. Some of the lyrics are... immature. In content and execution. But it's not enough to sink the album. It's barely enough to keep it from full marks. A very strong 4-star offering, for sure.
Always liked this. Still do, it's great.
Bloody great
Nice change from all the 70s albums. Big fan of indie rock so this album slapped even though some songs are forgettable
me re gustó actually!!! 8.5 /10
Great Album.
One of the defining albums of the 200's indie movement. Franz Ferdinand immediately set themselves apart with razor sharp out fits, razor sharp cheekbones and razor sharp disco beats which immediately set them apart from the hundreds of "landfill indie" bands around at the time. The standout is of course take me out which is so much fun it has the power to stop you in your tracks to make you listen. But the rest of the album is packed with great tunes, dark of the matinee and auf achse are some favourites.
come and dance with me MICHAAAEEELL
Love the vibe, change of pace. Very instrumental heavy with the vocals taking a backseat at certain times. The lead singer has a very iconic voice on the song Take Me Out, the smash hit that put this group on the map, a song I've been listening to for a while now. Other highlights include: The Dark of the Matinee, This Fire, Michael, and Come On Home, as well as the title track Jacqueline. Overall 8-8.5/10 In my opinion
Solid early 00's alt rock album. "Take Me Out" major hit but the rest of the album keeps the vocals-driven feel throughout.
4 Fun
Good niche rock
Now this is more my type of music. Still not 100% my taste, but I did really enjoy this one. All of the songs were distinct from each other while not being incohesive and the melodies were really catchy. I think this might be my favorite album from this project so far. I think that if I listen to this several more times, I might even add all of these songs to my playlist.
Good stuff. I am a sucker for this kinda indie rock so of course I'll like it. Although it's great it doesn't soar as some of the other indie rock albums I love. Still a great listen. 4.5/5
iconic
Enjoyable alt rock album with a sound typical of the early 2000s. Great runtime and overall catchy and entertaining songs
Classic of that era, shame they couldn't follow it up
Finally one I have actually listened to before, it's been a while. I do enjoy this album though.
There’s no question that the legions of unspeakably dull, Primark clad, middle-class art school indie bands this album spawned would be good enough reason on its own to absolutely pan Franz Ferdinand’s debut effort. It happens so often however that the progenitor of a musical movement or style actually has relatively little to do with the imitators which follow. I was so pleasantly surprised by how well these songs hold up now that the Topshop indie movement has finally been buried. The heavy debt owed to the likes of Josef K and Orange Juice for their blend of post-punk hooks and dancey rhythms is immediately apparent. But , for better or for worse, this album belongs very much to its own time. Tracks like “Michael” still pack a punch, and the songwriting on numbers like “Dark of the Matinee” and “Take Me Out” have deservedly cemented their status as floor-fillers in any genre of the 2000s. I want to hate this record. But I can’t. It’s just really great.
I mean, just a classic of 2000s rock revival. Not quite as good as You Could Have It So Much Better, but still a classic.
No, there had never been an Archduke Metallica. It was Franz Ferdinand and apparently his name "sounds good" so that particular band adopted the name. Lame choice, not gonna lie. But boy how their punk-fuelled indie rock hit hard like a thick history book.
I had already listened to this album a while ago, as I bought a CD copy from a secondhand store nearby. While I generally liked the album, the only track I really remembered and went back to was “Take Me Out,” but upon listening a second time, I like the rest of the album a lot better, and I will definitely be coming back to it.
I think I still have this CD lying around somewhere. This is just a fun, raucous, legit rock n roll album. Such a great album and great debut.
really liked this one, a lot of catch little parts in most songs. the intro track was BALLER
loved it when it came out. still ok.
muy bueno
Lekker energiek en makkelijk weg te luisteren. Altijd wel een leuk bandje gevonden, en dit is denk ik wel hun sterktste album.
Brings me back to Cul the sac. Heerlijke nummers staan op dit album. Fijne stem ook.
An album which was everywhere when first released with its punchy guitar stabs, charismatic front man and catchy choruses, perhaps a little shine has faded with time but still an enjoyable listen with Take Me Out, Come on Home and Michael particular highlights.
Richtig gute Musik! "Nur" 4 Sterne weil das Nachfolgealbum "You could have it so much better" nochmal besser ist.
I liked this when it came out but it's been a while since i listened to it. Held up really well.
I must have missed rating this (I thought I did first time through.) I really enjoyed it, I hadn't listened to this in quite a while, but it holds up really well. Good times, will be adding it to my listening rotation.
Very refreshing britpop music, wonder why their albums later cannot replicate this kind of success.
I really actually enjoyed the music. Very upbeat, every song is different and sometimes somber. I enjoyed it, but I don't feel it's something I will return too. I wonder why. Maybe because it feels like it's speaking to a past version of myself.
This album is a perfect time capsule for the 2004 that I experienced.
Rock indie.
Fun album. The front half is strong!
Wicked album, really enjoyable they are a good band
It's a good indie rock album. Mad that it's nearly 20 years old and there really haven't been many good indie rock albums since. Not hugely surprised it's left the book as for all it's qualities, aside from Take Me Out it's not that outstanding/noteworthy in this context. Michael and Darts of Pleasure my favourites.
Classic indie disco
Great album. Need to add to my collection
Take me is an absolute banger. Haven't heard the rest of the songs but some of them are also pretty good. Checking these out.
listen
Nostalgic
very fun, punky rock and roll
Alltid klar for litt Franz Ferdinand,
Franz Ferdinand <3
Tremendous album. Bridged that gap between The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys
Was good!
Il faudrait inventer une note entre 3 et 4
Hee, dit is heel leuke muziek en een gevarieerd album. Vrolijke melodie, lekkere zangstem. ****
Good album that was able to compete with it's big hit.
I don't mind ol' Franz and this album's pretty ok. Not quite a 5 but a fairly solid 4. Faves: Take Me Out, This Fire, Michael
Yeah ok post-punk revival. I missed out on it at the time, but it's definitely in the spirit of post-punk.
Genre: Post-Punk Revival 4/5 Another mid-aught’s British rock album that I listened till I knew every cymbal crash, and for what I believe is good reason. This is a 4 not *purely* out of nostalgia, but because I truly feel there’s an undeniable joy within this project. Franz Ferdinand is a band, and an album, that has since faded with the times, leaving little behind as a collective beyond their earth-scorching single, Take Me Out. The reality is that these guys have a fairly respectable body of work, as far as decent rock albums go, but the unfortunate reality is that they never topped their debut. A few songs later in their career are great (I’m QUITE fond of Do You Want To from the album after this one), but they did truly bust their nut here. Starting with Take Me Out, which is probably the best rock single of 2000s (???, I can’t think of a better one), this was a tune that was both familiar, yet fresh to so many listeners. Its brilliant riff, and its distinct disco feel with punk-style vocals on top, made it immediately one of the catchiest songs of the decade. BUT, what lies within is a more-than-decent collection of similar style jams. Tight disco riffs mingle with heavy drum and bass, the vocals stay relentless, loud, and energetic, and it makes for a damn good dance party. Dark of the Matinee and 40’ are my favorites outside of Take Me Out, but cuts like Jacqueline and Michael, showcase all sides of Franz Ferdinand, showing how their particular brand of rock sounds good any way you slice it. Really killer album that, like I said, I think may have died with the times, but this is one that I’ll play forever.
Its unapologetically getting a biased 4. I have weird (maybe Freudian) memories of this album so was impossible to listen to objectively....
Such catchy guitar licks – the guitar sound reminds me of Gang of 4. One can rant (as I often do) about “what’s the purpose of releasing a post punk/rock LP like this in 2004, so late in the game, blah-blah-blah” but if the song-writing is good, nothing else really matters. “Take Me Out” is epic and since I don’t listen to Indie 88, I still have a few hundred listens left until I’m sick of it. There’re a handful of catchy tracks, though some sound like revisions of the hit. Not a good sign for the band’s longevity. “Darts of Pleasure” I like.
Typical early 2000's indie, which I am a fan of. Though here it sounds like they try to be a bit more unique, like on "Michael", and some songs work better than other. Though "Take Me Out" still my favourite track.
Pretty consistently good all the way through. Revoked good memories
This was fun stuff. I enjoyed. I’ve known and liked “Take Me Out,” but “The Dark of the Matinée” is a new favorite.
Testing notes
Plusik bo wcześniej poza "Take me out" nie znałem nic, a kilka fajnych piosenek jak "Auf Achse" się znalazło. Na minus, że trochę mało różnorodności, czasem mi się wydawało, że wstępu są zbyt podobne w niektórych piosenkach. Plusik, że w końcu coś co można na spokojnie przesłuchać w mniej niż godzinkę XD
When this album came out, I sort of lumped Franz Ferdinand in with The Strokes and The Killers. I really liked both of those artists, but I didn't take much notice of Franz Ferdinand. Listening to this afresh though, it's a really impressive debut. They seem incredibly confident and sure of themselves for a new band, and the songs are really good and well produced. 4 stars.
9/10
Really good. Forgot how much I liked this album.
A rosey glow of nostalgia from this one. This was everywhere when it came out, and I liked it mainly because I loved the bands they were copying, such as Josef K. Now much further removed, there’s another sense of nostalgia for the time I first heard this. This time I enjoyed the energy of this from the start. And always loved the "It's always better on holiday, so much better on holiday. That's why we only work when we need the money” line as it reminds me of the office jobs I had around that time. But the energy did dissipate towards the end, or rather my enthusiasm for the songs. Some great tunes, and they never did anything as good. But, like the album itself, the idea seemed to run out of road fairly quickly.
I like this album...I like it a lot. To me this is to be lumped in with Arctic Monkees, The Good the Bad and the Queen, the Libertines / Babyshambles and maybe even British Sea Power and The Legends. For me this is the best of the bunch (except for BSP, The Decline of British Sea Power is an incredible album). More consistent in its accessibility than the more lauded Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand has very few missteps and when it hits it's target its a bullseye. A very enjoyable listen. 4 🌟
A shining light in the indie landfill era. I will never get over the fact that what sounds like the greatest song Josef K never wrote ends after a minute of Take Me Out, and becomes another fine but not quite so brilliant song. But sharp suits, tight guitar lines. Good work.
Yeah, great no nonsense indie rock for partying, yet with interesting lyrics. Like it!
8'5
I love this album. Some great tracks
Loved this when it came out. Wonder what they're up to now?
I liked this well enough at the time, and it seems like they did a good job of raising the profile of lurchy angular post-punk as a whole, so hurrah! Still enjoyable to revisit! Fave track - has to be "Take Me Out" - that's an absolute tune. "Michael" and "This Fire" get honourable mentions...
I'll give it a 4.5, really liked it but not one of favorite albums of all time. Hit songs were dope, filler songs were okay
File under “whatever happened to” but If I compare this to yesterdays (“Nowhwere” by Ride), this is sonically pleasing, interesting from song to song and full of hooks. Fave tracks: “Michael” “This Fire” “Take Me Out”
Mostly brilliant - close to a 5 star.
I purchased this at some point, for the U.S.-recognizable hit, and ended up liking the whole thing better than I expected. Finely executed, unique sound.
better than i was expecting. nothing from this era has stood up that well because there was so much paint by numbers in the indie world, however theres some actual content on here. in fact i'll go medium on it, if any of these tracks came on in a random shuffle i wouldn't skip it. i wouldn't have been able to hear it in 2004 but you can very much hear the influences, in the same way you can with oasis.
fairly gooood. would listen to majority of songs again.
Kaks biisiä oli entuudestaan tuttuja, joista toinen aivan läpipuhki soitettu, mut tätä kuunnellessa toimi sekin tosi hyvin. Vekkuli kokonaisuus
Boring outside of main hits
It’s… okay.
Solid album with influences deep in the post-punk of he late 70s/early 80s. Suitable mix of indie/garage rock with a slight dance influence. Forerunners of the garage rock revival of the 2000s
Franz Ferdinand is the first album on this list that I'd already played in its entirety, and what a banger of an album it is. I adore Take Me Out and played it again several times. It's not quite a 5/5 as there is a bit of filler - but a solid 4/5, and I will listen to it again.
Really nice, dynamic. I already knew some songs.
Love the indie vibes, dig the beats but it's a tad too much "pop" for me personally. Take me out is definitely the top for me though and very catchy.
Talking heads on television.
One of the best debut albums of all time
From when I first heard, Take Me Out in 2004, I became a fan. They lit up the dance floor of ever indie club across the world. Them touring this album in Australia was a special time as it coincided with the opening of Spectrum, a venue I would go on to do the art for over the next 6 years. I still love the rest of their work but none could ever match this debut
Good stuff, interesting, spunky and very youthful and alive. I always loved Take Me Out, the lyrics are so good, the sound, the voice and sharpness of the overall sound. Nice one! And the dark of the matinee! What a song.. Sublime lyrics.
Stort plus för längden på albumet. Så ska det vara
Wow. I remember hearing/watching Take Me Out on MTV. Has it really been 17 years? At the time I was 14 and didn't really understand Franz Ferdinand or their music and wasn't a big fan. Now I think I understand and like them a lot better. Hard to believe this is a debut album, as sophisticated as it is. I was pretty torn between rounding this up or down from a 4.5, but in the end I'm rounding it down because there are a couple of songs on here that really aren't very good. But there are no really bad ones and I really enjoyed The Dark Of The Matinée and Darts Of Pleasure very much.
Fun, guitar indie. Taking a lot of queued from late 70s/early 80s. Quite knowingly arty - like a punkier Pulp.
Sixth form vibes, still holds up!
inga dåliga låtar, dock svänger inte höfterna till alla
Fan fina ju, en redig banger
