Reviews (page 6 of 14)

A great pop rock album that still sounds great today.

A childhood classic for me with a few fillers. Time signature change in “Take me Out” is always great to hear.

It's really good, take me out is obviously a classic, but dark of the matinee feels underrated to me as well. Honestly there's not really a song here I don't like. It just feels like there are albums that do this sort of thing better. Still a really worthy 4.

Excellent!

Take Me Out: Ist irgendwie etwas an mir vorbeigegangen, ganz nett aber haut mich nicht vom Hocker. Cheating On You: Etwas lärmig. This Fire: Die Harmonien in der Gitarre am Anfang sind vielversprechend, allerdings stellt sich der Song als lärmig und unwandelbar heraus. Darts of Pleasure: noch cool. Michael: Die Akkorde sind teilweise recht dissonant, das gefällt mir. Sobald die Singstimme dazukommt, meint man, es wird tonal, aber auch der Refrain birgt dann spannende Harmonien. Come on Home: ups, nicht zugehört. 40‘: Der Rhythmus ist sehr tanzbar, beim Lalala will man mitsingen.

Good album

Thought these guys were a one-hit-wonder, but most of the tracks on the album hold up to Take Me Out.

Just listened to this for the first time a couple of weeks ago, but happy to hear it again.

One of my favorite albums from my teenage years. Still makes you want to throw everything in the air and just dance. Really really love Franz Ferdinand!

I remember being obsessed with this album in the mid-00s as a touchstone of indie rock. It still holds up twenty years later as an exemplar of that sound.

Thank you Guitar Hero for introducing me to FF. I liked this album then and I like this album now.

this always has been a very fun album. i found the musical motifs somewhat inconsistent, which never stopped me from loving it a lot

I have always liked this album. It had some great singles off of it, but the whole album is sharp. The crispness of the playing is fantastic.

Sooo many tasty grooves. Nearly every song draws you in with an infectious guitar hook (~ think Interpol, the Strokes, Kaiser Chiefs). Really regretting missing them in concert last year!!

Hadn't heard the rest of the album, but it's pretty decent 4/5

Brought me back! Some good jams

Definitely holds up

I like their sound

Solid Standout songs: Jacqueline The Dark of the Matinee Darts of Pleasure

Que todos los temas te hagan mover la patita ya lo hace bueno

No bad.

This is old fashioned, but in the right way to please my ears.

What came first, the archduke or the band? Well, contrary to popular belief, it was in fact the band. As such, this is a truly timeless album with a handful of nostalgic bangers. I had a nice time listening to this, and could understand why it would all kick off if they were assassinated. Franz Ferdinand walked, so Franz Ferdinand could run, so Rio Ferdinand could offer dim commentary on football matches.

Good fun and a decent album all round. Not sure this was worth fighting a World War over though.. then again one thing I've learnt having dived?.. dove?.. having belly flopped into this list, is that I know fuck all about music. Despite some of the music on the album occasionally feeling like rejected FIFA 04 tracks, as a whole this was a solid, enjoyable indie rock experience.

Franz Ferdinand is a British group that made a version of alt-rock that could be called dance punk. They made funky, danceable songs, that became a very successful version of brit-pop for the aughts. Their self-titled debut album won the Mercury Prize, and met with near-universal critical acclaim. The album includes "Take Me Out," the band's breakout single, as well as "The Dark Side of the Matinee," and "Michael." These bass-driven, upbeat danceable tracks are great examples of the band's catchy pop songs.

Classic of it's genre. Brings back happy memories of sticky floors and pints of snakebite.

Brilliant. Their best. Know it well and remember buying it back in 2004! Maybe a bit underrated these days. They should have put the single version of This Fire on here instead though.

TAKE ME OUT! Tudududududuu. Die succesformule is op een aantal nummers toegepast op het begin, vond die niet zo spannend. Afgezien van ‘Michael’ die wmb misplaatst is op dit album, en misschien uberhaupt op een alvum, vordert het album tot meer uniekere nummers met vette

A great flash-in-the-pan album.

This is an exceptionally good indie rock/garage rock revival album from the early 00s with tight, punchy, funky, very punctual and danceable rock songs and with a huge hit which was an anthem of those years. There are many albums from the era that sound so dated nowadays - not this album, which sounds fresh even today. It's a 4.5 album now, but I might round it up to 5 later.

Pretty solid garage rock.

The sound of this album was so exciting when it came out and spawned many new indie bands that made it cool to dance at rock shows again.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Another album that's been on the radar since I was a kid. Franz Ferdinand was also on Rockband which was my favorite childhood game. So it seeped into my conciousness early in life. I never paid the rest of the album any attention, but it is definitely early 2000's indie/alt rock jams for sure. Particularly liked 40' and This Fire the most. Keep any of this sound in the pipeline and I'm a happy lad.

does this indie rock come with like, disco beats? i guess that falls in line with whatever "dance-punk" is its pretty cool

Some good singles that have cemented themselves into pop culture

The singer / vibe is like talking heads but with a lot less substance

Really Solid record with some great deeper cuts. I think the majority of the world really only knows this band for Take Me Out and a slightly smaller subset for This Fire, but those are just two out of a handful of highlights within their style. Standouts for me apart from the other two were Auf Achse, Cheating on You, and Come On Home

An album that is much more than just Take Me Out. They got bangers. Very much holds up today. I like the intro to Jaqueline and the synths in Come On Home. Highlights are those two, Take Me Out, The Dark Of The Matinee, and This Fire.

Really fun album. Listened to it a few time. The Dark of the Matinee was my favorite. Worth listening to again along with other Franz Ferdinand albums.

Reminds me of a mix of the Strokes and Hives. Take Me Out is, of course, a classic. But I enjoyed the intro song Jaqueline. Lots of good beats and bass underlying the melody. This is a quick listen album at 38 minutes.

There is a lot of Brit indie rock on this list. I’d rank Franz on the higher side of the genre.

Smells like stale beer and the mid naughts. Take Me Out is one of the great drunken earworm songs.

Mega throwback. I swear I remember listening to some of these songs when I was younger. They seem familiar. I really like this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think this is one of those times when knowing the what influences are makes an album better. I first heard of Franz Ferdinand and this album when it came out and of course back then I didn't know much music outside of what was popular at the time, so I thought they were ok, but just another band of this type. Now knowing its influences makes me enjoy the record a lot more. The way they take late-70's/early-80's post-punk and dance-punk flip them on their heads to make what was previously a very fringe rock genre into something catchy and very accessible. Another notable influence is glam rock-era Sparks, which makes a lot more sense after listen to both artists' collaborative album FFS from 2015. Overall, while not wholly original, it's notably well exectued. Key tracks: Take Me Out The Dark of the Matinée Auf Achse This Fire Michael

This album is carried by 'Take Me Out' but in a way that overshadows the other bangers on it. 40', Michael, and The Dark of the Matinee are just a few that i think deserve way more recognition. Also, I'm sad that I never got the chance to see FF as they were up and coming in small venues as unfortunately, I was 4 when this album came out

Right up my alley, having only heard Take Me Out, the rest of the album had me head nodding during work. Solid album, didn't know this was after the strokes breakout. I'm kind of visualizing this as the scottish's response to the arctic monkeys.

Surprisingly good throughout. Very talking heads on a couple of tracks, especially 2

Fantastic 00s album with smash hits. I love the easygoing style and how this is album is just good in many ways.

Loved the vibes- twilight grundge cool girl

Enjoyable enough top to bottom with a couple of great tunes.

Scottish Strokes

Yeah this is an indie classic

Surprisingly compelling. Although 'Take Me Out' is the fun standout, a lot of the songs are pretty fun in their own way, with the latter half of the album actually picking up. The words are quite witty and don't take themselves seriously. Very fun.

Definitely a fan of this and pretty easy listening

Turns out these guys are more than just Take Me Out. Would easily give this another listen.

It's fun, and there're a few great songs. They somehow managed to make every song feels unique while still have a certain sound of there own, which is good. Fav tracks: Take Me Out, Darts Of Pleasure, Come On Home, 40' 3.75/5 rounded up.

take me out still the highlight. this is the perfect early 2000s indie rock album

Rockig, gut hörbar, interessante Texte 4/5

Amazing album - right down my alley. But I also really like Television, Queens of the Stoneage, The Black Keys, The Strokes, so it shouldn’t surprise me

Lively spiky indie fun. Enjoyed alot first time around. Slightly repetitive and runs out of steam.

# Album Name: Franz Ferdinand # Artist: Franz Ferdinand # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: I remember franz ferdinand from back in the day. There was a real resurgence of the indie scene in the noughties. At the time, i only ever heard the singles. And they did actually make an impact at the time. But i didnt realise how many singles actually came from the one album. FF have a particular style but there was a lot of variation on this album. Even though it was a great listen, theres just something not quite there pushing it to a 5. Top album though. Really enjoyed it. It took me back to the days. # Top Tunes: Plenty of great songs on this album. # Would I listen to it again? Fuck Yeah

molto bello! conoscevo "take me out", non mi ricordo se la mette il papà in macchina o se l'ho sentita su insta. Stile pure mi piace. "this fire" mi piace molto! Il mood è molto bello e allegro. Veramente bell'album, sono sorpresa!

• 4/5 • Height of UK indie from the first few years of the century • Great singles with Jaqueline and Take Me Out and strength across the rest of the tracks • I can hear the UK post punk/early New Wave influence of The Jam, etc.

Knew it before but haven’t listen to it for ages. Still very good surprisingly!

First album I ever bought with my own money!! Brings back the mems.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. It's a very unique kind of punk that's somehow still danceable or at least has that kind of quality that pulls you along. The lyrics are also pretty fancy for punk - I had to look up what "matinée" means Standouts Jacqueline Take Me Out The Dark Of The Matinée 4/5

This album has some Arctic Monkeys vibes. The opening song Jacqueline is a good song. It also has Take Me Out which is a great song. The Dark Of The Matinee, Auf Achse, Darts Of Pleasure are also great songs. Overall quite good.

I really like this and I saw them live back in the day but there’s something that stops me giving this a 5 and I’m not quite sure what it is

É um bom britrock. Gostosinho de ouvir, e embora já estivesse viciado em This Fire(por conta de Cyberpunk Edgerunners) tem outras músicas no álbum. Mas por enquanto só viciei nos singles: Take Me Out e The Dark Of The Matinée

One of the best albums to come from the 2000s UK indie explosion

Excellent album with some iconic songs.

+ good ol' rock

Upbeat and pretty good. Some cringey.

2000s British poppy rock. Catchy at times even though this kind of stuff is usually my thing.

Nostalgia: 4 Qualify: 3? I'm going to let Nostalgia have the win.

Hui, schöne Klassiker, Tell her Tonight war auf FIFA 2005, das hatte ich oft gespielt auf GameCube. Take me out: ***** This Fire haut richtig rein beim Intro von Cyberpunk Edgerunner Ich heiße Superfantastisch Ich trinke Schampus mit Lachsfisch Songs der Playlist hinzugefügt: Take me Out

I’ve never quite understood the trajectory of Franz Ferdinand’s popularity. When this album and its follow-up came out, they were absolutely massive, seemingly omnipresent on music channels. Then, even though the quality of their output never wavered, they seemed to slip under the radar. Their later work, including their collaboration with Sparks, deserves just as much attention as this debut. But this—this is great. It’s catchy, lyrically sharp, with those words delivered beautifully in Alex Kapranos’ signature sardonic style. Everybody knows the iconic guitar breakdown in Take Me Out, but for me, the gorgeous keyboard melody in Auf Achse steals the show. There’s a slight dip in quality in the final third of the album, which is why I’m saying 4 rather than 5, but this remains a wonderful debut. Standout Track: Auf Achse Score: 4/5

Sparky

I refuse to believe this came out 20 years ago, still sounds fresh. Great album.

I have never listen to any Franz Ferdinand beyond this album, and don't desire to, which is mainly odd because I enjoy this album so much.

While I never got tired of Franz Ferdinand's monster hit (which is still a lot of fun to karaoke), the album has a lot of sleeper hits that never got as much airplay (Jacqueline, Dark of the Matinee, and Michael). So I tend to think of them as less of a one hit wonder and more of a one album wonder - but it's a super solid album.

i love this. and it sounds similar to arctic monkeys, one of my favourite band.

This album is all about the drums, bass and nostalgia and I was here for it.

Fantastic album, taking me right back to working in the Dutch equivalent to HMV called Free Record Shop. I can still remember opening up and closing down the shop, the smells permeating from the next door ice cream shop and the people buying terrible music. Best job ever.

Nice easy light rock

It's a pretty good rock album, with a few good hits

Parts of thus album are just f'n great but about half of it is jusr merely good and solid... I'll split the difference and go (8.2) ★★★★

Cool 00s angular dance punk. "Jacqueline", "Take Me Out", "This Fire", and "Auf Achse" are all super cool. 4.5 stars

Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand is back in town

I thought this would have aged badly, but the album starts off crisp. The guitars are recorded in a really clean way - it reminds me more of The Strokes than I ever previously considered. Tell Her Tonight at times sounds like a Beatles song, but with some very strange vocal affectations that give it some extra character. Take Me Out is of course a very good song, perhaps the song that defines Indie rock from this era. It holds up. And Matinée was low key always my favourite FF song, also holds up pretty well. The verse about talking to Terry Wogan on BBC2 just tickles me in the right places. The middle of the album loses some steam, but I like This Fire - I remember this song from an old FIFA game or Burnout maybe? Darts of Pleasure and Michael are also certainly more than filler. The subject matter of the latter feels starkly more progressive than most bands of a similar ilk and era would ever write about. The last two tracks are a bit of a damp fizzle out for me, but overall I'm impressed at the depth and wit of this album and how well its aged. Fave Tracks: Take Me Out, The Dark of the Matinée, This Fire, Michael 4/5

Great representation of the music of the time

Pretty good album, but mostly held up by a couple of hits.

There are some really great tracks on this. Take Me Out, The Dark of the Matinee especially.

Listened to this with the most crushing hangover of my life, while walking to an underwhelming 1-1 draw between United and Chelsea. Despite all this, it still holds up 20 years on, in a way that one suspects much of the rest of the early 00s guitar deluge wouldn't.

Just as great as I remember it in 2004, if not better

I remeber hearing this album in its entirety (or close to it) when it first came out. I recall really enjoying it. On a fresh listen, I still am really enjoying it. Franz Ferdinand have such a unique sound and style- garage rock meets indie meets pop, which a spooky sort of vibe that permeates the album. The hits are definitely hits, while the other songs on the album are still compelling. I think this album does an effective job of presenting a concept and sticking to it. Overall- hovering between a 3.5 and 4, but personally I think it gets the 4 star

Such a solid album

Don't remember listening to the album before but very good. Darts of pleasure a great debut single

Jaq was really good def going on a playlist very much my vibe 10/10 Tell her tonight had nothing special to remember or anything but not bad 8/10 Take me out is amazing a classic that's already on some of my playlists def one of the better on the album as well 9.5/10 Matinee had a very different flow that I adore with the semi quick lyrics very fun to listen to and good lyrics 9.5/10 Auf achse had a really cool piano synth whatever thing that went ooooeeeooooeeeeooo which was cool but aside from that it was way to repetitive and nothing else special 7.5/10 Cheating on you was a really solid song nothing bad but once again sounded very similar to others which no defining feature 8/10 This fire was amazing the perfect bles of repetitive chorus without feeling like it was the same verse over and over also just amazing lyrics to sing and listen to 9.5/10 40' had a cool start and was a very different vibe from most of the others on the album in its beat and lyrical flow (also I thought it was 40⁰ until I heard them say it)

I love this album.

One all timer surrounded by a decent album tbf, rotation

Peak personal nostalgia. The indie rock-dance hybrid has helped it age better than its contemporaries.

- Ewig nicht gehört!! - Mega geiles Album, mega geile Band - Hab Franz Ferdinand früher echt richtig viel gehört. Rating: 4,25/5

- mega Album, habe bis auf Take Me Out noch kein Lied davon gehört - wusste nicht, dass Take Me Out DAS Take Me Out und von denen ist - toller Sound - eingängige Klänge, Sounds - tolle Basslines, die immer mal herausstehen

indi rock pop

Better than I remembered. Kind of like a poppy, disco infused Talking Heads album. Solid stuff 4/5

Rating: 9/10 Overall amazing, especially the first half. Just a very fun album, absolutely infectious and full of energy throughout. Favorite songs: pretty much all of them besides Cheating On You and Michael. Worst song: Michael.

I was in a 90's alternative cover band about 20 years ago. Take Me Out was one of my favorite songs to play. I never listened to the full album until now cuz who listens to albums? Good stuff! It grooves and rocks.

Love the energy! Their music is pretty infectious. Take Me Out has been a fave tune of mine for a long time and I was vaguely familiar with a couple others, but the album as a whole was new to me. They really rock it out from start to finish.

This album starts shaky, but once you hit Take Me Out it’s banger after banger.

This is better than I remember as a silly one hit band, but I still think other bands were better at this type of hipster rock. The faint comes to mind. I'd be really interested if this band is remembered in 25 years. Still pleasantly surprised

A fun little trip down memory lane, feels very mid naughties indie/alt rock and I'm here for it! Apart from their hits I haven't listened to much Franz Ferdinand. Pretty enjoyable for the most part - there's a few tracks I'll come back for, but a few I'd skip. Makes me wonder why I didn't get into them more when they came out - what was I even doing in 2004?

Good all around album for “one hit wonders”

when i was typing Franz Ferdinand into spotify Frank Zappa came up first and i was curious the difference in monthly listeners. Zappa has 950k and Franz has 9.8 million. i was kinda hoping this album was gonna suck and i was gonna shit on how many more listeners they have but this was actually a pretty cool record!! i liked it best when it got a little disco-y and when it didn’t sound too british. overall nowhere near zappa but still good

4/5. This was a very fun album with each song being pretty tight and accessible despite the heavier sound. Many tropes working against it but despite that, these are very danceable and excitable songs. I don't really have anything bad to say about this, but I don't think it reaches masterpiece status. But I can definitely listen to this front to back and enjoy most of them. Gotta love the Scots. Best Song: Take Me Out, This Fire, Auf Achse

Franz Ferdinand was most definitely a fun one. It is one of those albums that takes a little bit of time for it to get going but when it does, it really does. I was just shocked seeing just how many of these songs were bangers and have some super catchy rhythms. It was mainly the singles that stuck out to me but many of the regular album tracks still had that fast, fun vibe that i liked about the singles. And there isn't one bad song, sure, the first two songs weren't amazing but they weren't bad, the rest were absolute bangers though and just show how great this album really is. Best Song: Take Me Out Worst Song: Jacqueline

gotta love some Franz!

Always loved Take Me Out so was cool to hear more! Will definitely have to go back for a relisten but I liked it on the first one.

Albumi #69, 05.10.2024 Skottibändi Franz Ferdinandin Ruotsissa äänitetty debyyttialbumi vuodelta 2004. Orkesteri vetää ihan tyylikästä punkista ammentavaa vaihtoehtoräimettä, jossa vahvasti etualalle miksatut bassot sekä yksinkertaisen melodiset kitarariffit toimittavat hienosti. Tämä teos kuuluu ehdottomasti meikäläisen levyhyllyyn.

(FIRST TIME LISTEN) jacqueline - 3.5/5 tell her tonight - 3/5 take me out - 5/5 the dark of the matinee - 4/5 auf achse - 4/5 cheating on you - 3/5 this fire - 4/5 darts of pleasure - 3/5 michael - 5/5 come on home - 3/5 40’ - 4/5

Ordentliches alternatives Album einer schottischen Band. Es werden Ska-, Wave-, Rock- und Punkelemente verarbeitet. Es macht das Album interessant und abwechslungsreich. Gute Songs sind “Take me out” und “Jacqueline”.

Pre-listening thoughts: I have vaguely heard of this band and have heard take me out on the radio. This seems like a weird pick but we’ll see Post/during listening thoughts: this is surprisingly really good. It’s pretty standard indie rock but I kinda rock with it idk. This is indie rock that prioritizes catchy melodies and hooks versus indie rock that prioritizes lyrics that get mumbled against instruments that are poorly mixed. And that’s why I like it. 8/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no but a solid listen Fav tracks: Jacqueline, Take Me Out, Auf Achse, This Fire, 40’ Least fav tracks: n/a

I liked this. This indie style got done to death, but that was after this FF, so I’ll give them credit for making it popular.

‘Take me Out’ was a huge song but I didn’t know any others. The sound feels nostalgic but still sounds good. I appreciate when songs have some room to breathe rather than a wall of lyrics crammed together (this album does decently). Variety of styles between tracks. 3.5/5

Sick of some of the tracks having heard them too many times. But in the time and for what it is - good good album

Enjoyed this album for the most part when it came out. FF were a bit different from other bands around at the time and it's always good to see a local Glasgow band doing well. Album has some good songs and although not one I could listen to on repeat, it still sounds good over 20 years after it was released.

Pretentious art school rock but I can’t help myself - this album is an absolute banger.

Excellent album. Cohesive, energetic, fun to listen to. I’m sure I won’t listen to every song in the future, but Take me Out will definitely start hitting my rotation.

The lead singer reminds me of Jarvis Cocker, which makes me feel like Franz Ferdinand is alt-rock Pulp. Take Me Out is a great song, love the bassline. This is like a cross between punk and glam rock. This album was so good, I didn't realize I'd listened to the whole thing.

V good album, liked 40' a lot

Woh I used to love this album. The first four songs hit pretty hard. Dark of the Matinee, good stuff.

Fun and catchy. Did I really need to hear it before I died? Probably not, but I’m not mad about it. I enjoyed this era of music when riff-driven pop rock made a comeback. Some of these hooks are so catchy, but ultimately, the tracks start to sound a little same-y. The only one that really stands out is the hit Take Me Out, and that’s mostly because it was played to absolute death during its heyday (it has 17x more Spotify plays than the next highest track on the album). Aside: I have memories of my old Pandora stations getting seemingly fixated on a song and playing it ALL THE TIME. It always had the effect of making me kinda hate the song. Take Me Out was one of those tracks. So was Wild Horses, for whatever reason. Anyway, this album’s enjoyable enough for a low 4, but nowhere near interesting enough for anything higher. 4/5 Highlights: Take Me Out (god help me) Come On Home 40’

This album got regular play in my car in 2005 during my short commute. A pretty fun album that felt unique when it came out compared the more bluesy and/or Zepplinish rock revival that was going on at the time (Strokes, Jet, White Stripes, Wolfmother). It IS always better on holiday!

Fun around album tracks a bit samey but singles like Micheal push this right up.

Erinnert mich an meine Jugend! Indie Rock, coole Texte und typische Beatwechsel. Old school.

Great album. 'Dark of the matinee' and 'Take me out' are stone cold classics.

Never heard of them before but their music was really pretty decent.

fire. fuck yeah

Big favourite of mine this one. Take me out is a ‘banger’

Some bangers. I’ll listen to one again

better than i remembered

highlights: jacqueline, take me out, cheating on you, 40’ (oct 3 2024)

I thought this was a German band during childhood edit: oh they actually sing lines in German, forgive me for making that mistake >:0 They're not escaping the 'derivative' accusations on this website, but Gang of Four updated with a modern sheen turns out to be all that I needed today. The 70s retroisms such as the spooky organ in "Come on Home" & a vocal performance not too removed from David Byrne don't take away from the fact that it's a 2000s classic; it's not really an anachronism when contemporaries LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes & Green Day were all plundering classic rock in some way or another. HL: "Take Me Out", "This Fire", "Michael", "Dark of the Matinee", "Darts of Pleasure"

Fun album, not too deep and kinda goofy at times but upbeat and enjoyable. Near peak early 00's Rock. I remember Take Me Out and This Fire from early Madden games.

3.5☆/5 09.08.2024

Exciting Album I need to spend some more time with it.

Uplifting

Sound of my early teenage years, possibly one of the first albums I "listened" to. Still holds up as a classic example of naughties British rock.

I’ve never listened to Franz Ferdinand before, aside from the intro to Cyberpunk Edgerunners it turns out. I’m a fan.

One of my favourite rock songs of all time, Take Me Out, is apparently from this album. Amazing track, great memories. Rest of the record - pretty good, but not entirely convincing. Just a very solid album which I'll happily revisit again.

Didn't get a chance to hear this on Friday so listening now. I like the intro on this first track. It's definitely a catchy tune. The guitar in a few of these songs remind me of the Misfits intro song. Catchy little tune on Auf Achse.

first full album listen, only ever listened to this FFFire (not the album version, which is inferior sadly) and take me out due to cyberpunk anime and guitar hero great album, their sound is distinct in a nice way

Pretty nice album to listen to, although the lyrics can sometimes be repetitive.

Had heard some of it already, great tunes and great vibes

Surprisingly complete album.

Really liked this album. Surprised I haven't dug further into their discography despite knowing so many people who are fans of them. The Dark of the Matinee is a great track.

I assumed this wasn't gonna hold up, glad I was wrong. Even with Take Me Out being one of the most overplayed songs in modern history, this album was a great listen.

Know it. Love it

I can't say that I've ever listened much to Frank Ferdinand, but I have heard some, and I wouldn't object to listening to more. I don't think I have a lot of clever stuff to say about this particularly other than it's quite enjoyable Standouts Take Me Out 4/5

2004 seems accurate

emm...garage pop

Finally, a Scottish band that doesn't blow. All this generator has been full of when it comes to Scottish music is garbage. Franz Ferdinand, on the other hand, displays talent, and have an interesting sound. It's like a modern day Talking Heads. Like art rock mixed with indie. Take Me Out is a classic. This album transported me back to my university days. Solid album all around. Favourite songs: Take Me Out, Jacqueline, This Fire, Dark of the Matinee, Michael, 40', Cheating on You Least favourite songs: Tell Her Tonight 4/5

I got so excited when I saw this album today. One of the only bands left on my "need to see" list. So many good songs and nostalgia from my childhood. This (album is) fire.

Amazing album. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars because I can’t decide between 4 & 5. The opening track started off soft and I was worried it wouldn’t be good, but then it started rocking. No real sleepers, and I’m a huge fan of the early 00s rock sound. But tracks started to all sound the same, and do I think it should be on a list of 1001 albums you MUST listen to before you die? I don’t know because I think a lot of other albums do this sound better

Thought I would like this more but still pretty solid. 7.5/10

I liked the Hit from this album, “Take Me Out” when I heard it 20 years ago. And then I forgot this band. My mistake.

Excellent album. I guess I should've dug into FF earlier. I knew "Take Me Out," but honestly didn't even know who the artist was. This is peak indie rock, and the album is so clean and crisp with great tracks and energy. It doesn't feel 20 years old. ****

This was cool. Everyone knows their big hit single, but I had never listened to the album itself. Easy to listen to.

Great to have a rock band from this time frame that isn't pretentious hipster junk. This actually has style

Different than I remember. Tight at 38 mins. I agree with other review that all the tracks are different but all sound Franz Ferdinand.

I'm always hear a lot of "they rip off Gang of Four, Wire, Talking Heads, Television.." ect but I hear them do their own thing. In my ears, they sound like they've been influenced by this scene but securely find their own place in it. These guys have gone on to do a lot, including an excellent collab album with Sparks. I'm glad to dedicate a whole album listening session to a group I only cherry picked songs from back in the day. Really enjoying their angular sense of melody and thinking a deeper dive into their catalogue is on the horizon!

Not just a great album, but a great WWI trivia question.

Loved this album when it came out and it still holds up 20 years later (20 years!?) Franz has that early-2000's Strokes/Interpol sound and it works. All the tracks are worth listening to.

Still as good as ever. So many memories!

Franz Ferdinand’s self-titled debut is a sharp, swaggering burst of post-punk revival energy that still sounds remarkably fresh. With taut guitar riffs, infectious hooks, and a danceable edge, the album delivers on its promise to make guitar rock fun again. The band’s art school sensibilities mix smoothly with a raw, rhythmic urgency, giving the whole record a confident and stylish vibe. "Take Me Out" is the obvious standout, a perfectly structured anthem that shifts gears mid-song and never loses momentum. It is bold, catchy, and brilliantly executed, the kind of track that defines an era. While not every song hits that same high, the album keeps a strong pace throughout, full of clever lyrics and tight arrangements. It is not flawless, but as debut albums go, this one made a massive statement and backed it up. Favorite Song: "Take Me Out"

Heard it before it’s fun, their only good album.

Really good.. liked it a lot

Just right up my alley. Good stuff.

What a record! At first I thought it would be like some typical 00‘ indie but it turned out to be a really good record. Changed my mind!

i like this album!! i’ve listened to two of the songs before (take me out and this fire) and they’re good. a lot of it is really simple but catchy and fun

Fun album. Lots of energy. Take Me Out is an all time banger. First half is stronger. Yeah I like this one.

This album is alright. 3.5 but I’ll round up because it’s better than Madonna.

Really enjoyed!

Not something i've heard before but quiet catchy

Good album. When listening through I was reminded of how much Franz Ferdinand I actually knew. Hits: Take me out Do you think his parents named him Franz Ferninand? If so were his parents German and Austrian? Or is he Franz from Ferdinand, Indiana?

4 stars. I like this album

Better than I remember

Very solid. 4.3

High energy indie rock with a sardonic flavor. Enjoyed the doubled vocals and the snappy lyrics, as well as the driving instruments. Lots of iconic 2000’s riffs in here!

Very movie scene driven.

Knew this on release. It pretty good

excelente disco pra pista. pra indie dançar desengonçado, ams feliz

Take Me Out The Dark of the Matinée This Fire Darts of Pleasure Michael

They have their own sound. Some of the songs on the album have too much of the same sound, but the album has some good music overall.

Take Me Out was ubiquitous - even i heard it with some frequency - and liked it. But not enough to ever check out the rest of the album. So now - 20 years on - this 39 minutes of early aughts post punk reprise sounds pretty damn good. I actually like the back half better. The first 5 songs - previously noted banger aside - drift together a bit. The latter songs have the same elements just mixed up a little better. Certainly worth a listen.

Okay... but I totally remember when Take Me Out came out and it being played at the middle school dance lol. I'm sure I've heard other songs but I've never sat down to listen to a full album before. I loved this. Will definitely be listening again.

Favourite tracks: Jacqueline; Michael; take me out; tell her tonight; dark of the matinée; come on home

2004 banger bringing me right back to 14 year old me cycling to school with a disk man.

Such a solid album with one of the greatest songs ever. Michael is fire, also, 4.5

A night at the matinee is my fav. This album also has some nostalgia factor for me.

Really good, kept my toe tapping the entire time. Do not remember liking this nearly as much as I am.

Fun and catchy indie rock from the early 2000s. Some music snobs will lump Franz Ferdinand into the unfortunate 'landfill indie' label, claiming that the era was flooded with bland rock band all trying to sound like The Strokes. The criticism isn't completely wrong but there were still plenty of greats who cut above the noise. Songs like 'The Dark of the Matinee' and 'Darts of Pleasure', definitely kept this album securely above the landfill.

This is a great album that I haven't listened to in a long time. A couple tracks (most notably Take Me Out) got a good bit of radio play during my college days, but the rest of this album is really solid too.

Great debut album. Darts Of Pleasure leads the way, all songs are good. I like the sound (3.8*s)

I really liked the top hits from this album when it came out but I don't know if I listened to the full album very often (or at all). It sounds good today but I guess it's not that memorable. I don't know if I'd really put it on necessarily, the indie rock genre is so oversaturated. But I will say, when you hear one of these songs you instantly know it's Franz Ferd. Their simple formula works and it sorta made me miss that time when a band like this could even be popular on the radio. Points for the time warp and for the manifesto-vibe.

Great debut album. All songs are good. Particulary like Dark of the Matinee. Reminds me of much I love going to the Frida for a day showing of some obscure flick. Take Me Out got overplayed when the album dropped but it's still a good one. Is the album a must hear before you die? Probably not but I recommend it for to an indie fan...3.7.

Very solid album that I've always dug. I remember being very into Franz when this first released. Years later this albums hold up and is still very strong. All songs good, many very good, some of them great. Franz has a ton of fun and has a great sound. The more I listen to them the more I get into them. 4.1 stars

Good solid indie album, probably usually only worth 3 but quite nostalgic.

Great debut

This definitely was a definitive album of the 2000s. I feel like Franz Ferdinand, along with The Stokes before them and the Arctic Monkeys, were a real driving force of the garage rock revival that determined a lot of the musical trends of the decade. I did get a bit sick of some of the singles at the time, but only due to them being overplayed. Revisiting this album now, I can appreciate it for what it was, and I forgot how many great songs are on here! Take Me Out, Matinée, This Fire, and Michael were all brilliant singles, and the rest of the album holds up well too. Fair play to them for including a big of homoeroticism in there as well - that was fairly unusual in 2004. The only negative I have about this album is that it has a sort of detached coldness/aloofness that puts me off a bit. Apart from that though, it's great! Just not something I click with that much on an emotional level.

There comes a point where eventually you stumble into someone you know, maybe not well nor personally, but you're kind of acquaintances all the same. You know each other on a first name basis but you're not pals who hang around. Well, this is my storey about such a person. The Time: Spring 2001. The Place: Glasgow... I was a fairly recent dropout from college, I was unemployed and as part of my burden on society, the jobcentre offered me a place at a little college 3 days a week to learn how to build PCs and assorted IT related menial tasks because I told them I was a web designer (go figure). Now for those 3 days over a few months we had different people come in and show us the ropes, like Pico (real name unknown) taught us how to built networks, how to crimp cables and put the appropriate connector on them and wire it all up properly; Ken taught us how to put things together in a PC chassis while regaling us of far fetched stories of how a crunchy keyboard really meant you had a bajillion spider eggs in your keyboard instead of, say, toast crumbs; and finally Alex, he was a cool younger guy who didn't try to bullshit us, he took everything Pico and Ken taught us and tied it all together, he also had a million music recommendations because he ran open mic night at a music pub in Glasgow. One of his recommendations was Carboot Soul bu Nightmares On Wax and to this day it remains a favourite of mine for comfy lofi beats, but I digress. After a few months I got a job not doing PC builds and left the course to become a functional member of society and within a few years I had up and moved to America to follow my dream. So now we're in 2004, and firstly, THIS WAS NOT 20 YEARS AGO, how dare you, and secondly we're invited to go see a fun little show run by local alt radio station 99X at The Masquerade in Atlanta. Killer lineup, literally because it was The Killer co-headlining with one Franz Ferdinand. The Delays, The Whigs and Scissor Sisters were also on the bill so eat that people. Glorious night, went down in Masquerade lore, floor almost collapsed but you could have put me straight through the floor when Franz Ferdinand came on and the singer introduces himself. Its fucking Alex Huntley from Anniesland College. So I give him a knowing nod and he ignored me and that's how we've remained to this day...

очень приставучий и танцевальный альбом, с удовольствием послушала пару дней. и потом резко надоел)

Quite enjoyed this one! Favorite songs were Tell Her Tonight & The Dark of the Matinee. Enjoy the sound of the singers voice and overall sound of the band.

Had an “oh it’s that song” moment . Not the biggest fan of British rock like the Libertines and such but this was decent.

Fun listen! I love finding songs I’ve heard before (like Take Me Out) in the wild. 8/10

7/10 - We have had a decent streak recently. There was quite a few good songs and one that I had heard before. I can’t believe Franz Ferdinand released music 90 years after his death. That’s kinda crazy

This Michael guy seems pretty cool

Would not open

Really good, fun stuff. Guitar work is good if a little repetitive and the energy level is nice. A good find for me!

Thought I was going to roll my eyes at this. But no. It’s actually fun. Upbeat pop rock, lots of toe-tappers. They sound pretty good. Catchy.

I tried to put myself in 2004 listening to this. I pictured myself vibing on a late night bus or rail trip whilst high on oxycodone, with or without smoldering cigarette in my hand. In all seriousness there's an indescribable vibe, an overall angst to the tone which I appreciate. It isn't perfect - a lot of the overall tone and themes are repeated, but it's strong, and the musicianship is tight. Highlights: "Take Me Out", "Dark of the Matinée", "This Fire".

franz ferdinand

Take Me Out & 40’

Very hard not to like this album. Driving guitars, strong drums, pleasing vocals. Tight.

It’s been just over 20 years since Franz Ferdinand debuted, giving us some good timing to reflect on “Take Me Out” and its impact on a couple decades of indie rock. I don’t know that I ever listened to this whole album. But I’ve long since lost count of how many times I’ve heard “Take Me Out” and countless songs that feel like they took direct inspiration from it. Mostly cheery dancey indie rock is what I’ve always called it. What followed in the footsteps of Franz Ferdinand brought a breath of fresh air to alternative rock radio, one key element of what emerged from the rap rock and post-grunge malaise. A well deserved Mercury Prize winner and well deserved entry in the 1001. What’s that you say? It was removed from later editions? 🙄 Of course.

A very strong album. I’d only ever heard Take Me Out before, but found much to celebrate in the rest of the album.

Franz Ferdinand is fun, a dancy follow-on to the grittier saviors of alternative rock like The Strokes, but I remember what a welcome change this was to hear on the radio rather than the nu metal that dominated the airwaves.

Reminiscent of 90’s alternative. Loved this album.

Not bad

Banger album, I was already familiar with their work - love the energy.

decent, artic monkeys wannabes

A nice slice of jingly jangly pop rock.

Lots of good songs. Not quite a 5, but really liked it.

Memories of the indie night at the ABC in Glasgow circa 2005. A lot of them I’d rather forget. To me this album represents a glorious melting pot of music we had at the time, before it sadly turned into nu-rave

B+ Jacqueline 3 Tell Her Tonight 3 Take Me Out 5 The Dark Of The Matinée 3 Auf Achse 5 Cheating On You 4 This Fire 4 Darts Of Pleasure 3 Michael 4 Come On Home 4 40' 4 About a month ago, I commented to untitled2 that this album had nothing of quality besides "Take Me Out." Boy, do I regret those words? The answer is a resounding "Yes." By the way, congrats to the big fella on winning a chip in fantasy basketball.

An Amazing album, i bought this album when i was studying in France, remind me Soo Much souvenirs , love IT a lot

Not sure I'd ever intentionally listened to this whole album before, and was surprised by how much of it I knew. Take Me Out will forever be associated with RockBand for me, but the rest is surprisingly good, with little feeling of filler. It's upbeat and sharp in ways that really stood out at the time of release.

I never really realised at the time quite how big Franz Ferdinand were. It was the days when I was far too dismissive of indie rock so never gave it much of a chance. I certainly find myself singing along a lot to it on the radio these days, so let’s listen in full. Songs I already knew: Take Me Out, The Dark Of The Matinee, This Fire Favourites: This Fire, The Dark Of The Matinee This was almost great from front to back. However, I just didn’t enjoy Tell Her Tonight at all. It grated on me and just felt lower quality than everything else. That aside, there were plenty of really nice guitar licks here, lots of what I’ve always referred to as “disco beats” on drums, and vocals that are almost crooning. Overall, a very good album.

like the melody 7/10

It's a pretty good album without blowing my mind. Solid 4.5 for me.

Scotch music. I’ve probably listened to this album hundreds of times and listened to all other Franz Ferdinand albums about four times in total.

Excellent album

It's good, but I guess I would choose to listen to Arctic Monkeys if that was the choice, and it feels like it is.

Great album that I own. Good lyrics. Upbeat tempo.

blood breaks out of me, i deserve it. i dont deserve to keep it. i figured it was only a nightmare, but now it seems like a dream. theres a shadow hanging over my bed, every night it gets lower. i get shivers from its gleam, every night it gets colder. its finger counts my days, every night i get older. its hole its an oracle, every night i get closer. its the morning again. the sun cast a light over my regret, its shadow picks from behind bed. opportuniyies squandered, dont have the life to care, only to sit and ponder which one will leave next, the answer wont make me calmer. please let it be an armor, no weight, but thats just the opposite of hate. i cant relate. shots fired on the streets make me shake the bed, makes me wonder where the bullets will be lead next. please paint with red, please shatter my neck.

3 or 4

Instant Classic. I was washed over with memories as soon as it started. The angular guitars defined indie releases for the early 2000s the near disco beats make rock music danceable, and the iconic voice all have held up well to the test of time. It will be back in the rotation for some time

not many singles on here but fun to listen to!

this was a nice album

Great album. This was one I had mostly listened to before this project, so I was familiar. Great band

Did not like this at all

This album was full of nostalgia. However, I just can't give it the full 5. This is probably as close as you get without getting full marks. Auf achse intro is far too long and probably what cost this album If it had come before take me out then I might have forgiven it. Also really like Tell her tonight and the dark of the matinée

This might be one of the first records I bought. Not sure how much of this rating is nostalgia versus the quality of the album but it's a banger...I think

Love the funk sound in Rock

Kovaa rockia. Take Me Out ja This Fire klassikoita. Muuten ihan solid eikä muita kohokohtia. Michael kanssa jostain tuttu. Parhaat: Take Me Out, This Fire

more fun than i remembered

This album could’ve either gone the “has one banger and the rest sucks” or the “it’s a good album that also has an all timer on it” route and thankfully it was the latter. If Mr brightside didn’t become the phenomenon it is now back in 2004, take me would’ve been right there to take its place. That being said hot fuss is by far the superior album; the rest of this album wasn’t mind blowing but was still solid. I also liked dark of the matinee.

Pretty good

Most of the white indie rockers who brought upon the return of garage rock were interchangeable. This is better than I remembered, but I was more of a The Stills kind of girl.

A fun listen. Really catchy tunes and hooks.

Putting aside that take me out is one of those songs that I turn off instantly as over played, see mr brightside as well I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of this album which I really enjoyed The 00s were my era for listening to and buying the most music and I liked a lot of similar bands but never bought this album, no sure why, but before streaming it was harder to listen to music without buying the cd Overall a great listen, skipped take me out though

Was a good album. Listened while working from home

Take Me Out is a certified street banger. That being said, none of the other songs shine as bright. Most got my foot tapping though. Maybe I was just enjoying the respite from artsy fartsy 10min 7 minute long songs on some of these other albums.

Crisp, brisk, catchy.

I've been loving this album since I was a young teen. Absolutely iconic alternative rock.

Up there with the best U.K. indie albums of the 00’s. Probably doesn’t get the credit it deserves due to how overplayed take me out was at the time. Really good to come back to this album today and appreciate it. Franz Ferdinand a very underrated Scottish band in my opinion.

Very good album

I actually heard this album a lot of times, there are a lot of pleasant memories associated with it and in general it sends me back to a calmer and more carefree time, which, unfortunately, I will never return to. I really like this album, Franz Ferdinand always lifts my spirits. ez 8/10

I was surprised how much I ended up enjoying this record. I had tried it a few years back and didn't stick with much besides the iconic Take Me Out, but with a few years of growing I finally found something to love. It's not a perfect record, as there were a few songs with lukewarm hooks, and the version of This Fire on the album pales in comparison to the rerecording, but I enjoyed my time overall. Dunno if I'd call this a must-listen, but I see myself returning on occasion.

Very good alt rock.

my introduction to this band is from one of my favorite anime, Paradise Kiss♡ favorites: auf achse, this fire and darts of pleasure

Take Me Out is a certified banger. I miss when music sounded like this

Wow, what a surprise. Already knew Franz Ferdinand and Take Me Out is a regular on my playlists, but the band was never one of my favorite Indie Rock bands. Didn't expect the rest of their songs to be up to par, let alone on one single album. Nothing I would rate less than a 3.5. However, no 5/5 either.

The fact that this album is 20 years old is HUGELY depressing. That makes ME obscenely old...

I forgot how much I liked this album. Also, how has it been twenty years?

really solid sounds throughout, Take Me Out is especially iconic. missing another truly memorable song or two to take this to the next level but this is a must listen for any fans of indie rock

One of the most fun debuts from an indie rock band in the 00s.

This album has aged pretty well. I liked it back when it was released, but haven’t listened to it since then. A lot of the songs are still strong. Take Me Out is still a five star song.

Big fan of this one as well. I remember my friend Adam Neubauer playing Take Me Out and saying it was going to be huge. I really liked the disco inflections, this was one of the dancier albums of the early oughts.

You ever get excited to see what today’s album is, pull it up, and then get really disappointed? That happened to me on this one. Then, for the first time in a few years, I listened to this and remembered how great it is. I’m not sure why I was disappointed at first, because I’ve listened to this album quite a bit in my past. I think I lumped them in with The Killers in my brain. This was better. Favorite tack: Michael - a million stars

This is a pretty critical album to the continuing success of rock and roll music in an ever-saturated landscape of newly developed genres of the 2000s. While nothing Franz did after this debut would quite reach the same level of success or importance, without it, I think we would've seen a much different environment in the later aughts.

Franz Ferdinand is considered a one-hit wonder in the States. "Take Me Out" is a hugely popular single with covers, spots on video games, and plentiful airtime. The rest of the album is decent, indie rock. It is surprising to learn that Franz Ferdinand is well-regarded Scottish rock band which charted in the UK, nominated for several Grammy Awards, and received two Brit Awards.

Great album with som jammers

2004! The greatest year for music! I already know I love this record, but I'll try to listen to it with new ears. I mean this is just straight up super fun and catchy rock and roll. A very good example of everything that was good about music from this time.

Enjoyed this one, a lot sounds similar, but some good classics on here
