Reviews (page 6 of 8)
It's good background music. Gets boring if you actively listen to it but I guess that's kind of the point.
Nice, relaxing ambient, possibly only suitable for airports in 2020/21. Not a huge amount of substance though ...
"The album's usage at Pittsburgh Airport in 1982 brought on a barrage of complaints from passengers who said its uncertain tones made them feel uneasy and demanded that the previous background music be restored."
Ambient music, great for work, great to concentrate, and like the title says, great for airports 3/5
Enjoyed this album and it was great to hear
Very relaxing. Better suited for a spa than during with hours
Wasn't nearly as "lobby" or "elevator" as I thought it would be. This album belongs in a spa. I had no idea how to rate this, so I went in the the middle.
In a tous ecoute a la maison et personne a deteste. C’est tres atmospherique. 3.25
I like Brian Eno, this one is mellow music for any lobby.
It's ambient music, so you definitely need to be in the mood for it. I actually own this album, but I never play it for that reason. I'm never in an ambient mood. I don't know. I want to like this more than I actually do. The first track is really good, though.
This perfectly captures the ennui of sitting in an airport, so points for doing what it says on the tin. Album you must listen to before you die? I'm not so sure about that. Best track: 2/2
It does exactly what it says on the tin. Music to be ignored and listened to. Ketamine probably helps. Best Tracks: 1/1; 1/2
Should this be on the list? It's atmospheric, beautiful and very relaxing, but I'm fairly sure if Brian Eno hadn't been in Roxy Music etc it would be deemed classical, despite the synth pads. It's mostly piano music (lovely piano music). That concern being said, it is lovely music, and it's very clear that everything non aesthetic about Roxy Music was his work (to be fair, the dreck released after his exit proves this too). However, there are limited circumstances I would put this on - it is very slow and meditative.
Reductionist, minimal ambient music, devoid of many musical elements. Brian Eno pioneers the ambient genre, with wide soundscapes and almost eerie vocal production in '2/1'. Easily digestible as background music, as it does not require your attention to detail.
Great to fall asleep to
Can definitely understand how influential and important this album is. It probably won’t be my go to ambient album in 2021, but the ones I would go to likely wouldn’t be here without this.
"as interesting as it is ignorable" -- is an intriguing description. Music that you can drift away from, but it's still rewarding when you return to it. This reminds me a bit of puzzle adventure games; some have great soundtracks that excel at leaving you to focus on the problem at hand.
more loffy
I have heard this album at least a hundred times as I play it before going to bed at night. It is so relaxing and tranquil. I will admit, the first time I heard it, I was really wondering why this would be on a list like this....now I know. If you feel the same - give it a chance. It is really difficult to rate with stars though. I can't put it on the same level as most of the other albums that I love... I will give it a respectable 3/5.
Nice to fall asleep to, so it’s not entirely without merit, but I can’t imagine another time where I’d want to listen to it. If this is really your thing, Aphex Twin does it better.
Legit put me to sleep but I guess thats the point?
Good ambient music
Cool!
Decent study/meditation music
nice ambient music. It is what it was supposed to be. Calming.
Very relaxing
There are a lot of compositions that I like on this album, I just don't like ambient music as a whole or on principle. Especially the first side had some great moments on it. The name confuses me, since airports are such a stressful place with hustle and bustle while this album is the complete opposite of that. Highlights: 1, and 2.
Not too great, bit boring
A bit anxiety-inducing, but I'm not sure why.
Ambient is tough. I like it for relaxation purposes, or background while working, but don't feel like I really "listen" to the music. This album was pleasant enough - nothing jarring or difficult to get through, but also nothing that stands out as particularly moving or sonically amazing.
The album was intersting though I don't see anything too special about it
Bit ott
Sounds like my therapy session. But for airport. Bit understimulating for me, but it was good
Enjoyable background music.
nothing special 3/5
Not my favorite but okay, liked the brassy end.
Not my cup of tea, but soothing. 5/10
Crazy to see how far back ambient music goes and how far it’s come. However, it seems a bit ludicrous to have to rate it next to traditional albums of popular music genres.
OK, for sure Brian Eno is a genius, but sometimes I'm listening to something like this and wondering if it's a case where being a genius means you get to just noodle around for an hour sometimes. Im sure some smarty pants would be able to tell me off.
It was some knock your block off instrumental musics!
Tough to rate like an album cause it's just ambient music
Not too bad for ambient stuff but wouldn't say it really took me to a higher plane or anything

Brian Eno, 5 eme album proposé. Cet album est très différent des 4 autres déjà écoutés ('Here Come The Warm Jets', 'My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts' (notés 2/5), 'Before And After Science' et 'Another Green World' (notés 3/5)), relaxant mais pas très passionnant. =>2/5
I don't mind ambient music, but this was particularly not engaging. 5/10
This album evidently created the genre of "ambient music". I find it really hard to determine whether ambient music is good or not good. I can picture this playing at the spa while I get a massage and it being perfect, so I guess it serves its purpose. Great respect for Brian Eno and the album is notable for creating a genre, but not sure about having it on this list as something I have to listen to before I die.
I feel like Brian just went into the studio with a keyboard and just banged this out in a few hours. I was hoping it would be cool, but it just was too simple I think for me to really enjoy. Maybe that's the point? 6/18/26
193. ok
This begs the question: what is music? It’s not unpleasant, and it would do for an aquarium or planetarium, but it’s annoying as an album. Happy to be finished.
Yeah, just plain NPC music. Not remotely interesting as My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
nice
Meh
Listening session: june 6th, while making dinner Listened to before: no Thoughts: this would be nice to listen to if I was trying to get into a meditative state during yoga but definitely not for a regular listen. Maybe I will revisit this album if I have important work to do Favourite track: 1/2
Very much background music as it says
About like it sounds it would be. Nice enough to listen to as background.
Why?
I'm not sure if the name of the album was meant to be sarcastic or genuine, but it reflects well this album. I can see it as soft background for an art show that is trying to be esoteric. I found very little to connect to in this record. Next!
Tråkigt men säkert fint på konstutställningar, 2/5
Can something be too relaxing?
+1 star as I imagine this is music I would hear at an airport
Too ambient!
REALLY boring, but had the benefit that I was doing work and it was inoffensive in the background. If I was only listening to it, I think my body would have shut down as a defensive mechanism against boredom and I wouldn't be typing this review right now...
It did grow on my over the day but still pretty boring (though I suppose that is the point of this ambient electronica).
Ambient 1/Music For Airports does what it sets out to accomplish perfectly, and that’s why I don’t really like it. Listen, when I want to relax with an album, I’m going to play something like Metal or Grunge. I get the people who can work with this on, but to me it’s just boring and has no substance, which also ends up making it distracting, ironically. I’m just not into it at all. This was a critically important album for the birth of Ambient music, but I don’t really like a lot of Ambient music in general, so this was always personally going to be a hard sell. The crazy thing is, this is the second Brian Eno album I’ve rolled within a week. This is my second of 5 Brian Eno solo albums for this project, following “Here Come The Warm Jets”. That album was surprising in that it featured Brian Eno, who has a very peculiar voice, performing all manner of different genres of Rock, Pop and even a little bit of Jazz. I ended up giving it a 5 and mentioned being excited to check out the rest of his stuff. I’m aware now that Brian Eno was known for pioneering this genre, and now I don’t know what to expect from his 3 other solo albums on the site. Again, I understand that this album is meant to be unobtrusive and fade into the background. And again I say, unfortunately, it succeeds in doing so. 279 albums in and I’ve come to my very first “Controversial” artist. I didn’t think it was going to happen, but here we are. I can see why someone would like this, but I’m never going to be caught dead vibing to most ambient or Lo-Fi music. It’s just never been my thing and unfortunately, this album only enforced that belief. Even when I’m sleeping I’d rather listen to something else. Sorry Brian. Still curious to listen to your other albums, but now I’m also a little cautious as well. Didn’t love this one, but it succeeds perfectly with what it’s trying to do and it’s historically relevant. I’m not mad that I listened to it, but I very quickly needed to turn it off and absolutely will never return to it. I liked the last song, “2/2” the best because it felt very space-y. In yet another fun instance of immediately hearing an artist I’d only just learned about from this bot out in the wild, the animated show Invincible prominently featured a Brian Eno song in Season 4. Always very cool hearing an artist like that, I hope that trend continues. Anyway, yeah. Didn’t like this one, sorry about that.
Antras is Brajano Eno. Snooze fest
I swear to God I must have listened to this boring nothingness a dozen times but I could never remember if I actually finished it or not. Influential and blah blah blah but it's literally an infinite loop of drone.
I hate airports.
Spa music. Too repetitive for casual, purposeful listening.
4 songs - 40min - just like the title says Ambient AF!
Wow. This was a lot of nothing.
Weird. Not even sure this was on while I was listening to it. Maybe that's the point.
Not for me
I see the name Brian Eno and I'm pretty excited! For a moment. What I really want to know is, why all the positive reviews for this? I'm glad others are benefiting where I am simply skipping out.
All things came together today as I travelled via airports and airplanes today. I love Brian Eno, but this album proved that he can create ambient music as well as any sound library. Unremarkable and naturally truly ambient.
I like some ambient music but this was a bit too lifeless. Made all the worse by Ascent (from 28 days later) coming on the radio straight after as a ‘here’s what you could have been listening to’ gotcha
Gentle ambient
1.5
2 - I don't mind ambient music, but I don't necessarily think I needed to hear this album before I die.
Alright, a serene 48 minutes of piano doodling and ambient, airy, atmospheric effects flowing through the space. 48 minutes of piano doodling. For 48 minutes. Doodling, on a piano. I can imagine many of the other bands Mr. Eno produced had to politely suggest that his piano doodling was nice, and that they thought it would be good dial it down just a smidge in their own recordings.
Wow, so airporty! Love you Brian you always know what to do. I listened to this while reading a poetry book and all of a sudden Brian Eno's name is written there?? Biggest jumpscare of my life. But man, a Brian Eno poem does go hard.
Sorry Brian. Je hebt genoeg andere mooie dingen gemaakt. 5/10
As ignorable as it is interesting. Nope. This is dumb. This isn’t music you need to listen to. This is some grad students homework that he spent ten minutes on before turning it in. I get that he pioneered the ambient genre, but he shouldn't have been in the room to begin with.
I feel bad for having a go at an album for basically doing what it says on the tin, but this is boring, bland background music. It is absolutely not bad, or offensive, but it is just magnolia wallpaper.
3/10 19.02.2016
Ummm idk about this album. It’s kind of a weird concept to listen to ambient music in my opinion. This album feels like a mixture of sounds that can be an alarm on your phone, music they’d play at a spa for meditation, a lofi version of the music that plays on the mii application on the wii, and the sound associated with angelic beings in movies. This album is only 4 songs there is no reason it should be 48 min. The songs carry on too long without much transition at any point. For me personally, there’s too much space between notes so it’s easy for me to drift off or lose focus. Calling this elevator music or hold music isn’t really fitting cause even that has more tempo than this. Sonically it sounds really beautiful, but it’s just not for me personally. Final verdict is this would go hard in a yoga studio, but outside of that there is no reason for me to be playing this.
I couldn't do this one. It was definitely not for me. I realized the Ambien is derived from Ambient, which coincides with the sleepiness I felt. I get that it helped definite the genre, but when I am listening to these albums on my drives to and from work, this is not my first choice. That said, I think if I put this on at work, which I still may do, I may bump this up a star.
Well, it is ambient.
Booorrrriiinnngggggggg
I respect it but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t struggle with it
What's with the meditation music on this list?
Nice for an easy listening maybe for like yoga
go by train it's a lot better
I want to love Brian Eno ... but my only real exposure to him, is his early contributions in Roxy Music. I this album you really have to be in the mood for, I was listening during a busy day at work, and I just felt like nothing happened. Maybe if I was listening at home with headphones, it would sound better.
I don't smoke weed anymore so it's hard to enjoy this. So non-comittal (I know that's the point) that it's just quite annoying. Like, be something or shut up. I know that's the point. But I hate it.
Gets the job done for the situation where you need soothing background music. Otherwise it's boring AF
No. 92 More than for airports to sleep or study
Not my thing. Very spacy and ethereal, but also not super interesting. It's like the music that plays in the background of a B-level early '00s movie about kind aliens or something. Definitely not one for me to seek out, but not offensive.
Ummm… clearly innovative and well composed/produced. But it’s very deliberately background music. Only really needs to be played at Zen yoga retreats or old peoples’ homes. Don’t really think it would work at the airport!
There was music on in the background while I worked?
2.5 - Meh
Two stars only cause there is some truly unlistenable trash on this list.
Just shitty ambient music
Peaceful sounds like the kind you might play while watching a flower bloom or season s changing on a time lapse film.
This is nice background music to get a few things done, I’m sure it would also be a good calm-down album in the evening.
Sure, it's boring as hell and I can't forgive the fact that the first track is riffing on Frere Jacques. But I have to admire the commitment to the bit - this does make a lot of sense for an airport.
Boring
4/10
I am sorry nerds, but there is just no point to this one. Sure it seems he was innovating, but just innovating what would become royalty free youtube backer music. I liked here come the warm jets homeboy was doing interesting shit there. This one's nothing but boring. I could do it.
Interesting that this album is credited with defining the "ambient" genre. It's certainly a calm, pleasant listen. I wouldn't mind if it played in an airport. It sounds like an art installation or a meditation class and I could certainly use it as study music. But it's just a little too simple/calm for me to want to return to it.
I don't really get it, I'm not an ambient guy Will I listen to again: 0%
Meh
Not even for background music
yeah im just never in the mood to listen to ambient airport music. feel like this didn't need to be on the list.
Delivers on what it advertises. In my youth i would have scoffed at this, not seeing the use for it. but now I can absolutely see this being needed for all sorts of environmental needs. there are plenty of places and times where you just need some chill instrumental music in the background. Its lovely and well crafted but just not my jam, so it gets a 2.
boring
I LOVE BRIAN ENO! But not this Brian Eno... He's on this list several times, no?
Even for ambient music this was more tedious to listen to than usual. Brian admits himself that it's "ignorable". The best way to ignore it is by not listening to it at all. Sure, it'd be good to go to sleep to I suppose, but I'm not rating it higher for that. That'd be like criticising a nice jalfrezi because it gives you a bit of the runs on the way out. What a miserable way to bring up a years worth of albums on this site. 4 more from this tosser to look forward too.
i understand the historical implications of this album but do not think its an album you need to hear before you die. it mostly consists of one phrase repeated ad nauseam for 9-16 minutes. it would be ok background music but even for that its way too sparse for my taste. id likely be more forgiving if i got this on a day when i was working but instead i got this on a day when i was spending 5 hours driving, leaving this as my entertainment
Brian Eno has been involved in so much great music over the years, from Roxy Music to Talking Heads to Fred Again (to mention just a few). A true artist, and an intellectual. And, this album Ambient 1 is ultimately an intellectual exercise about music and its role within varying spaces (physical and mental). It’s an interesting piece of work in that light…but it’s not especially interesting to listen to. Which is partly the point, I know. But I’ll only listen to this as a late-night sleep aid.
I've listened to this a couple of times before and whilst it's not objectionable it's a little too bland for me. As music for an airport it's probably OK. If it's just background music to play for no other reason then I can listen to it but it's also something to tune out so if you're not deliberately listening to it then you don't notice it.
Spa music. Relaxing but nothing special. Pretty blah.
three things: i think this is definitely important and influential enough to deserve a spot on the list, it's much more listenable to me than most ambient music, and i have a lot of respect for Brian eno. all that being said, miss me with this shit dawg
Oh gosh, it's so boring. (2/5)
I fell asleep. I respect brain enough but fuck....
Previously rated: #304 - Before And After Science (3/5) #673 - Another Green World (3/5) #740 - Here Come The Warm Jets (4/5) #913 - My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts (3/5) *********************************************** Album #986 There was just nothing to this. It doesn't lie though. It is what it says it is, ambient music. It's just that's it's nothing special whatsoever. No melody, no build up, no crescendo, just some "ahhs" some occasional piano notes, synth, horns I think. It's arguably a 1/5, but I usually save those for albums that really piss me off how bad they are. This was just barely anything. The fact is, this guy just has too many albums on this list.
It's all there in the title, for better or for worse. Nothing wrong with these tracks. In fact, they are probably more interesting than any music you've ever heard playing over an airport loudspeaker. Just not sure why it was essential for me to hear this album before I die.
I’m sure this is fine for its intention, but way ti chill for normal listening. Would be good for meditation or calm yoga.
This is calming but I don't know if I would listen to it again
I mean I get it but really not my thing
I can respect Les Paul's contribution to the history of music by innovating the electric guitar, but I don't really look forward to listening to Les Paul's music. I feel the same about Brian Eno and electronic music.
Chill, pero sin más.
Overall: 4/10 Quite honestly put me on edge, which is (I would assume) the complete opposite effect that Brian was going for. I'm talkimg borderline panic attack levels of anxiety from listening to this. Something about it just really is not for me. There were moments of relaxation to be found (mostly at the beginning) but DAMN I don't want to feel like that again. Fav song: 1/1
Well - that was - different. Still, as odd as it was, it was better than at least a 1/3 of this list.
I suppose someone had to do it. I sensed a problem, though, when I dozed off in the airport lobby and wound up in Reno. What IS the fascination with this guy?
I mean, as ambient music meant for relaxing in an airport goes, I guess this is as good as it gets? But what a weird category to voluntarily put your music in.
I mean it’s great ambient music but like, there is nothing more to it than that. Great for work or study but I didn’t really need to hear this before I died
In no way do you need NEED to listen to this background music before you die. Pioneering is fine and it’s well made but it is not essential listening.
I was very bored
Does what it says on the tin. It’s ambient music, and I have probably heard it in an airport. It very much stays in the background and I don’t need my airport music to be a banger. Ironic that Mr Dimery thinks that it is music we should hear before we die because a) you aren’t really supposed to “listen” to background music; and b) we probably heard it in a funeral parlour.
This is such a weird album to rate. I kind of like the idea of having ambient music. This just leaves me cold, though.
How does one rate elevator backgound spa music?
I don't know if I can rate it a 1 or anything, but this is not for me. Track 1 is fine, but way too long. Track 2 feels like some competent keyboardist faffing around with the choral tone on a Casio keyboard for ten minutes. Track 3 is basically like tracks 1 and 2 played simultaneously. The main tone on track 4 varies between grating at the high end and farty at the low end. I guess it's not bad compared to some other ambient I've heard but my gosh, I don't need to listen to such long songs with so little going on.
Literal elevator muzak, nothing grand, nothing flashy, nothing remotely memorable at all...
Weird choice for top albums
Just background sonds. Solid work for airports (as titled) or hotel lobbys. You really can get calm if you diddn't listen to before you die.
Hmmm... This was... something. It was recorded and produced flawlessly, but it wasn't exactly what I'd call compelling music. It was certainly melodic and had powerful harmonies and soundscapes and the synth sounds were very clean, but arrangement-wise it was very spartan, slow, and kind of plodding. It was like an elephant -- broad, slow, deliberate, and majestic, but not very fun to have around. I know Eno can make compelling music, but this was just not it. I get that it's called "Music for Airports" and that it was supposed to be avant garde and all that, but at the end of the day, I just didn't love listening to it, despite the context in which it was written and recorded. Two stars.
first record is soothing to me, the next ones not anymore
For you public radio nerds, 1/1 is in the background of "This American Life" sometimes.
Not my thing.. i was listening to it while gardening and didn't realize it was making me so anxious that I started chewing my cheek until it bled
Airport music is not my bag.
Mellow and lovely, reminds me of a spa - but also a bit repetitive. Made me sleepy.
I can see the popularity for it's stated purpose; calm, peaceful, ambient airport music. But, For the purpose of this list, I can't see anyone saying "Man, I want to go to the airport and hang out all day so I can listen to the music"
Brian Eno is weird....
Tried listening but it's just music for robots
Nothing offensive about ambient music, but not much interesting about it either.
It might be good for airports, but it's not good for me. Or maybe a spa.
If you are looking for something that fills the background sonic void, this album is for you. If you are looking for something when finished you think to yourself "Wasn't there something playing like an hour ago?", this album is for you. If you are looking for something that helps take you on a trance-like peyote stupor during a misappropriated vision quest, this album is for you.
Can’t see this taking off in an airport
Put this on if you're having trouble falling asleep. Background music only.
Booooooooring. I’m sorry. This is a collection of sounds and an art project but it’s not an album. I’m not even saying anything about its quality, it is just not possible or appropriate to compare this to popular music.
This album is not just Music for Airports, this would also work well as background music for a funeral parlor.
Well, Eno wasn't lying when he said it wasn't meant to be listened to. Just some soft sounds and piano on a loop. Nothing bad persay, but it's not good either. 2/5
I'm not completely opposed to ambient music, but I reeeally don't particularly care for it. Pretty important and not bad, though.
It’s good at what it does, but it sounds like music played in the background of an aquarium.
Brian Eno: Ambient 1: Music For Airports: This sure is ambient music. Its not bad, but I really do not care for ambient music in general. Kinda boring. Some interesting sounds, I guess, but like who goes out of their way to listen to this? 5/10
Just why
Obviously pretty important for the ambient genre. Maybe just too ambient for me.
I listened to this... I couldn't tell you anything about it 'cos it blended into the background. So It's successful at it's aim I guess...
I always thought this was just a waste of time where nothing happens. Turns out it's a waste of time where only a small amount of stuff happens.
Descriptive album title. Says it all. Not bad background music I guess.
A bit much
Love u ambient music. Maybe was a bit to calm and long for me however. Gonna give it 2 star
I’m sure it’s great for what it is, but I’m not listening to all of this.
I am not keen on this. Ambient/atmospheric slow tempo piano plus vocal pads for 50mins. What is the point?? Best track - 2/1 (shortest, otherwise they all sound the same!). No, 2/2 is slightly more tolerable and just slightly longer 2 stars
It’s ambient so it’s never getting a high score, works as background music I suppose
It's ok, TOO CALM!
No way one of the greatest 1001 albums of all time. I get the concept, but just no.
It’s not bad per se, but it is legitimately background music. Some of the noises were quite irritating after a while. 2/5 Won’t listen again
Ambient - yes, music - ?
Soothing, beautiful, sleepy.
I think if I heard this in an airport I'd think some malign force was trying to control my brain, but as background for fairly stressful thinking and writing it was ideal. I'm not sure I would call it music, however; more like a nervous system intervention. No idea how to rate it.
Reminded me more of an art museum than an airport. It succeeds as a work of ambient music, but I didn't really enjoy it.
really bad white noise
starts out calming and peaceful. By the end it's just kind of tedious. Genre most easily replaced by AI
I liked the first track (of the four) a lot but not so much the other ones. The synthesized voices were a bit of a turnoff.
bissl zu monoton for my taste
people put on ambient music in order to fall asleep. after listening to this album, i can understand why.
Great music to fall asleep to, but not as influential as other electronic music in my opinion.
Meh. Might be segment defining, but it doesn't take much for that segment...
Choose one: (a) More like an album you must ignore before you die. (b) More like an album you must hear WHILE you die. (c) My left arm hurts. Do I smell toast? (d) This is a really nice spa. I think I'll pay the extra for a mud bath. (e) This is a really nice airport. I don't even care that my flight is delayed, the Cinnabon is closed, and I'm pretty sure my suitcase was lost the moment it disappeared behind that curtain. This music has made me so calm that I can't even scream at a gate agent. (f) Did not listen.
Even though I've been getting into ambient music more and more, I do think there is some stuff that is entirely too chill for me
Caught myself drifting in thought during this listen. Not sure if this is the “greatest ambient album” of all time but is was a good listen
Trying to be open minded about it but I just can't get behind it.
02/04/25 It really wasn't for me, but I can appreciate it would make good chill music or game music.
Loved the first track so much but was so put off by the others. The choral vocals on the middle tracks really ruined them and made them quite unpleasant. They would have been so beautiful without the vocals because they distracted greatly from the music itself, which was fantastic. The last track was a mess on all fronts. A 45 minute version of “1/1” would have been perfect and I gladly would have listened to that than sit through the other three tracks. I understand why this album is on the list, but it ended up being so disappointing.
Ambient classical music - Very calming, nice background music - Melodies are good but gets repetitive
Kinda like being in a sound bath.
No private session used for Spotify. Giving credit were credit is due, this album did have the plodding, boredom, and slight anxiety of waiting for your flight at an airport. Not sure why I would listen again.
Nah.
Ambient
Sleep music
Good for a massage
It is what it is. Not made to be actively listened to on headphones. So I used it all wrong and ended up a bit bored.
2.5 - ambiance
I could see waiting for a flight listening to this.
2.5
i respect ambient music but this was kinda long, i didn’t have a time where i wanted to listen to it so i kinda just forced myself to listen to it
Well, this album did exactly what it was meant for: easy, soothing, forgettable soundscape.
Good for airports or yoga, but not the most compelling listen.
My wife said, while listening to this, that it would be good on in the background of a massage parlor. For some reason this did not end with me getting a backrub, which is the only way to make this album better.
As back ground music? Sure. To sit down and listen to? No. 2.5/5
Part of my ratings are based on the likelihood of me listening to an album again, I'm not very likely to sit and listen to this again hence the 2 stars. However I do appreciate the music is good, it's creative and relaxing, it's just not something that I'll come back to I don't think
I hate to rate this so low, because I recognize what this music is supposed to be, I can see the originality of it, I can appreciate the artistic intent behind it and I know that it's influential. This is, simply put, music that isn't meant to be actively listened to. Certainly, not with intention. That in itself is kind of fascinating. You don't have songs here. You don't have any semblance of a structure. These are soundscapes. That said, even as background music, I didn't really enjoy this. I expected to feel kind of at ease listening to 1/1, but I began to feel this weird sort of dread whenever that sequence of piano notes popped up again. 2/1 and 1/2 perhaps the most unpleasant with those synth vocals. Perhaps they were novel in 1978, but they aren't now. I much preferred 2/2 as a soundscape. Perhaps if the rest of the album was more like this, I would like it more. All in all, it is fascinating as a piece of art, and it's a pioneer in ambient music. And I appreciate that. But I didn't find it enjoyable, and I likely won't put it on again, even as simple background music. Fav track: 2/2
1/29/25. Definitely interesting. Familiar with Brian Eno and enjoyed one if his albums along this journey, but this one wasn't really for me. Obviously great for ambience, but there aren't many scenarios where I would listen to this. I hate to add subjectivity to my rating but oh well.
Są spokojne, kojące kawałki i jest nuda. Ten album należy do tej drugiej kategorii. 3/10
This is like sad meditation music. It's meant to be listened to while thinking, but then I'm focused most on everything OTHER THAN the music. It's not even music to get you lost in your own mind. It's more like 'I need something to listen to while studying'. Doesn't even apply to me anymore.
I was prepared to hate this but I did find it very relaxing to listen to.
I like Eno a lot, but like damn. This is good, but in an ambient kind of way. Nothing is really going on but that's the point. Its perfect
Found this album to be boring. The music wasnt bad- it was technically proficient. But it was repeptitive in tone and not very interesting. Fine background music. Overall- didnt enjoy it. Probably a 1.5/5
As good as ambient music can be!
I mean, it's my fault for signing up to this "quest" - this was not go to the gym music...
I've listened a few times before. Tried to again, but each time this shit stresses me out so bad for some reason
This was entirely as advertised by the title. There's no clever wordplay going on here, this really is just ambient music for an airport terminal. If you're into that sort of thing, it's great. It wasn't a lot of fun, though.
Made me want to take a train. In all seriousness, this was a hard listen. Repetitive, and not at all interesting.
Does what it does really well but unfortunately what it does is bore you to fucking death.
Crushingly boring. Only gets 2 stars because I made it through the whole thing as background music. I can accept it being on the list as an important historical album, but released in any other year I would be aghast.
I can admire how this pretty much birthed the genre of Ambient music, but its not for me. I don't like ambient music and while there's probably a time and place for it for me, that time and place wasn't today.
Yeah it sure is ambient. At least the album title is accurate. I have absolutely no idea why anyone on earth would consider this to be essential listening. It’s pretty I guess? But it’s just so boring. It’s muzak and I don’t think it’s anything more than that. More elevators music than airport music. Skilled piano playing, odd vocalizations? Yawn. 2*
As described: calming background music. Wouldn’t really listen to it as an album
Pretty chill kinda boring tho.
Well…..as advertised it is ambient background music. The author of this book made some really dumb picks
Well it was as described. Too many Eno albums on this list stop Eno, he aint all that.
I mean... the title says it all, I guess.
Not even really for airports. This is just tones and sounds. Got nothing from this except the desire to sleep - which isn’t all that bad. Still got to give it a 2 - not bad, it’s just not music.
Tried not to listen to this to enjoy it as it was meant to be enjoyed. 2/2 was my favourite movement. Very weird inclusion in the list, however I suppose it paved the way in the ambient music scene. Looking forward to Music For Lifts.
This almost put me to sleep LOL. It was nice, but reminded me of music I used to listen to when practicing mindfulness. I would literally never choose to just listen to this again. Also, this does not match the vibe of airports today at all.
my friend made me listen to this a couple weeks ago when we were picking up a mutual friend from the airport. there was no parking, and so we just drove around in loops for like a DVD idle screen waiting for her flight to get in. it was perfect for that, so great work there. would never listen to it in my spare time, it's a little too minimalist to make my brain smooth in the way i think it's attempting to
boring, unless you like ambient then it's probably alright.
Brian Eno finally delivers on what he promised. This song is called Ambient 1, and this album is literally just ambient noise. This is not music at all, and is more meant to be on in the background than actually listened to. Why this is on an essential album listening list is beyond me. If this is on the list, then random sound effect records should be on this list too, because that is basically what this is. Super fucking boring. Typical weird Eno. Favourite songs: 2/2 Least favourite songs: 1/1 2/5
I appreciate the artistry in this, but I prefer airports to have gently energetic music, to strum my excitement about traveling.
Ugh The first song was pretty relaxing and I liked the piano. The rest of it was enough to bring on a major depressive episode 2 ⭐️
There's not much to say about Ambient 1/Music For Airports is there? :D It does what it says on the tin and achieves his goal, I wouldn't pay attention listing to it because I'm not meant to, in the right setting it delivers perfectly but this is an exercise into what I like, not whether the artist's intentions hit the spot, so I'm giving it a 2 as it's neither good nor bad, it just is.
I think this would be quite good to play over the speakers in an airport: it's calming, chilled music that might take some of the heat out of the frustrations that go with air travel. It's just far too airy fairy to be an album you have to listen to before you die. 2/5.
im getting this feeling that this shits gonna piss me off 1/1- bro. 3. minecraft music 2/1- huh. 2 or 3 1/2- 2 or 3 2/2- f i hear that fuckign chorus
Very experimental. Very peaceful.
Music For Airports? Unless you want everyone to fall asleep and miss their flights, don't play this at the airport...
🛗
pretty odd
Hey Brian, love the concept! The negative space in 1/1 would truly calm a frenzied traveler in a 1978 airport. (We remember ‘78 and airports at the time, they sucked. As humans, we have learned and gotten better about airports since then.) 1/2 not as neutral but still works. The B side gets less ambient and a bit too churchy. We’ve never heard any of this music at an airport (or any where else for that matter) but it is calming and would be appropriate during meditation, massage, or reiki. General consensus: original idea that is well thought out (1.8*s)
I don't think this album is bad per se, but I don't think it's "For Airports" or the 1001 list. It's really mellow (like fall asleep mellow) and it'd be better as a sound bath or meditation backing track. Some points for coming out in 1978 before those were even a thought. I think Eno himself describes it well with "as ignorable as it is interesting." 1.5
I like a bit of ambient / chill background when I’m working, but this was barely there. I may as well have been listening to rainfall. It’s a bad album to judge because the music is literally designed to be ignored. However, when I actually did focus on it, I found it boring. If you stick this on while giving me a massage, then fine, but other than that I won’t be listening again.
Very ambient album. Would be great for an airport. I'm sure that's the review everyone else gave. It wasn't a bad listen but very slow. Fine to listen in the background of doing something. 2.5 stars
Man, what a punch! If anything makes me want to listen to an album, it is a title like "ambient music for airports"! But more to the point, this album could only accompany a sparse, minimalist European airport with lots of windows, sunlight streaming through, and a zombie apocalypse that leaves the airport utterly empty. I would not be able to take this seriously at JFK or LGA. Or Frankfurt, for that matter. Maybe it could play in Geneva, or the airport in Station 11.
Well, certainly interesting. But really just quite boring.
It's beautiful and relaxing, but not something I would seek out for any reason, really.
Feels wrong to hear this outside of a massage
I don’t get it
Prefer elevator music.
2.5/5
not as good as the one that has lizard point on it
Sounds like lounge music... But it's actually an airport lounge music. I'm pretty confused about this album, was it an attempt at the best songs that no one will consciously listen to? Well, Brian did a pretty good job then, because I couldn't listen to it at all, it was so bland it was distracting. Nice experiment though.
So meh...I mean it was fine background music for an airport, mall, mediating or whatever you might need this kind of music. From today's context I don't see how this was amazing and influential. Not bad...you can just hear this kind of music anywhere.
Great music for napping or meditating. I wouldn't listen to it otherwise. This might have been innovative back in it's day but there's 600 youtube videos of ambient noise I can choose to fall asleep to or cleanse my astral chi.
Insomma... non e' il mio genere. Tranquillo.
It is honestly genius how you can copy paste 8 bars to make a song. 2/5
Ambiente Music - the genre attempts to create sound as "...ignorable as it is interesting." Total success on part 1 - total fail on part 2.
Familiar in 2024, unclear of historical perception.
He might have created ambient music, but it has been done better, overall a bit dull
Bits of this reminded me of the stuff off the second side of Autobahn. But quite a lot of it reminded me of a sixth form piano composition. And not in a good way. I loved Autobahn. It really is genius. But that's because it does something with the style. This, well, didn't grab me at all and, as I say, seemed too basic - certainly not what I was expecting. I didn't hate it, but that's not exactly a ringing endorsement of ambient music. In fact, if anything it was too prominent in places - and I really was trying to do a lot of other stuff at the same time.
Wasnt for me and I like the dudes music most of the time
I don’t think any ambient music is music I need to hear before I die. And this music in particular is nothing special. If you have a basic understanding of music theory and a synthesizer, you could compose this. 2.3
Meh. "greatest ambient album of all-time" isnt much of a selling point. 2/5
This was very weird. I quite like ambient background music at time, but this was too background even for me. It's perfectly titled, but I just don't really get why it exists on this list
I actually like Brain Eno's music. But I found this kind of babbling boring. Too bad, I was really looking forward to it. Obviously I was expecting something different. 2/5
Not for me
I didn’t hate it but it was almost a completely nothing album. There’s ambient then there’s this… it’s like the sound of a distant fridge running
just as described. Made me crave an overpriced cocktail (a double for just $2).
1-2
Too long and too dull
Not bad. Not really good, either.
A bit meh
Great background music to work to. Not sure of its place in this list, though. Better than some of the other offerings tbf.
It’s definitely ambient music, but was I wrong for expecting more given it was on this list?
100% ambient.
