Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Fine.
Pop divertido, especialmente as músicas em francês.
It was ok
OK, saw the French titles, had no idea what to expect, but didn't expect this... very much sounding like a modern French Madonna clone. Not that that's bad! Madonna is a guilty pleasure for many, and her early albums were huge massive club hits. Ah, interesting... didn't realize there was an English version. Honestly, was kind of enjoying the French, probably because you can't tell if the lyrics are dumb or not when they are in a language you don't know LOL. Somehow this makes me think of a very cleaned up Peaches.
Some catchy beats but lyrics are a miss
2/3
Decent album but could have been a lot better if it were shorter. Tons of songs on here that could have been cut. Singer sounds a lot like MJ, which isn't a bad thing, but it's for sure hard to escape.
I don't think I've ever heard that name. Last.fm says I listened to three songs in 2018. I prefer the english version, although I didn't realize it's the same songs at the first listen. Some solid songs, gonna give it another go someday.
I've listened to this a couple of times now, and it's definitely grown on me, but I think its good rather than great. It's a 2010s rehash of 80s electropop - doesn't particularly stand out in this regard, although her voice is nicer than most who've done this kind of record. Sounds better in French than in English. 3/5.
okay, reminds me of Michael Jackson sound.
Cover looks good. The songs were pretty good too. Liked Girlfriend, what must a woman do, and What's-her-face. The thing was pretty long including the French version. Overall, I'd give the album like a 6.7/10.
it some hot booming bass and boop. some gay bar dance vibes. very nice. they have quality, top notch vocals, a but dark, n deep. i dig the vibe fine. its a good pop album, but befuddling on a list of “must listens.” anyoie could have made this album in 2018. sooooo…. yeah.
Surprisingly really good. I liked the throw back
Pretty good
not my jam but technically nice music
Although not the type of music I typically listen to, I found myself liking this more than I thought I would. The production is varied and interesting, and the vocal performance is quite good. Some of the heavier dubstep-style beats I don't think were really needed on this one, definitely could have gone without. Also interesting that both French and English versions were recorded, I haven't really seen that done before (at least at the same time). But I did find that the lyrics on the French songs generally flowed much better. Fav Tracks: Comme si on s'aimait, Doesn't matter (voleur de soleil), Goya ! Soda !
Bill
Quite decent electronic pop, I won’t complain
Okay
Funky, disco-y. Very heavily indebted to the likes of Michael Jackson. Kind of loses steam about halfway through. Pretty cool that it has a version in the singer's native language of French. Favorite tracks: "Girlfriend", "The Walker"
This is nondescript, inoffensive, slightly sensible, genteel pop. Nothing more and nothing less.
Liked this more than I expected to. Kinda reminded me of Broods at times.
It's decent French pop. I'd listen as background music while working. I'm sure if I were in a certain mood, I'd very much like some of the songs. Overall, it's an okay album.
Ik vind de Franse versie net iets beter dan de Engelse. Toffe synth-pop, maar niet al te grote fan
это что французская версия ройшен мерфи??? попопопопопопопп п п п п
Not much of a fan of this….
Had a good sound - appreciated the English version.
I've dug Christine and Queens since I heard "5 Dollars" on the radio back when this came out. As a whole, the album is rarely as good as that song. It's good, and very listenable, but doesn't seem to stand out as being one of the elite pop albums of the last decade. I was surprised to find this on the list.
I'm not a pop fan, but this crushes anything that comes out of the North American/ UK pop scene.
Average music, easily absorbed, easily forgotten.
Some big slappers up front but tapered off towards the back.
Nice sound. Did my due diligence and listened to both the English and the French 1.5 hours of music, which is a testament to its being enjoyable.
This one grew on me. I enjoy the lead singer's voice and while nothing particularly stuck out, I ultimately enjoyed the 80s pop vibe. I didn't need both the English and French versions, which made for a too long album though it was easy enough to skip any that I'd already listened to the other version of.
Good pop synth sound. I didn't listen to the french version, ain't nobody got time for a double album, but the first side was a fun listen.
This music reminded me of the cool unheard of songs played in American eagle when I was in high school. I liked it. It’s a cool vibe. Not something I’m going to listen to straight through ever again but I liked it in small doses!
Nice production. Not much variety in the songs.
I had an up-tempo remix of Girlfriend on high rotation for exercise purposes a couple of years ago. I guess as far as electro pop goes this is pretty reasonable. He has a good voice and at times the production is interesting, like on Goya Soda and (what must a woman do). Though I wonder who 1001 had to remove from the list to add this.
Cest bon
It’s alright for what amounts to pretty generic pop.
Good. Long! Wish they’d made it standard length with the best there.
Wish I'd listened in French first, however in think the underwhelm was done. Wanted to like it more given the hype, but it was just fine.
Solid pop album. But it's a one in done for me.
A very modern-sounding disco-infused electropop whose rich heavy synths hold a candle to contemporary artists like Dua Lipa. The production is crisp, and the synths have an 80s retro vibe that creates an atmosphere. Comparing it to other artists like Dua Lipa (due to how derivative it feels at times), I found it to be less memorable, especially the second half, but it had cooler effects that compliment her singing style.
cocorico j'imagine ?
I don’t hate it it’s just a modern french pop album it’s alright
Lots of repeats in different languages. Not very interesting or exciting.
Hmm. Well it's accomplished pop, but I've heard a fair bit of pop in recent years that is really outstanding (Self Esteem, King Princess, Tove Styrke). I'm not really getting that here. I heard Tilted along with everyone else so checked out the rest of their stuff hoping to love it but was left cold really. I'm having more or less the same experience here. I've already got Off The Wall. Using the same production tricks is fine and everything but I'm not sure what's he to push this album into the stratosphere on its own merits. Doesn't Matter was good. Goya Soda was good. Feels so Good was good. A few songs were very average. Obviously I'm not going to listen to the same album again in French straight afterwards, therefore the 'Too long' criticism is unfair. Unless the songs were all so unmemorable to those people that they literally didn't realise this was happening, in which case that's not good, is it.
this was alright, it was some dreampop-ish
Always very happy to see queer folk and those with gender identity outside the norms do well. (For clarity because this is the toneless world of cyberspace: I am not being facetious, ironic, snarky, or anything other than sincere.) This album has some catchy pop tunes and I am partial to the French-language versions of the songs. Nicely done.
Good
Nice electronic pop songs. Sounds like early The Knife or La Roux. The songs are varied in tempo and rythm but the sound is much the same
Jájá, hlustaði bæði á frönsku (betri) og ensku (síðri) útgáfurnar. Þetta rann ágætlega í geng og átti fína spretti. Gæti hlustað aftur þótt ég sækist kannski í annað áður en ég geri það.
Not bad, 3.5
Good synths, good vocals. Prefer the French version.
I read an interesting article a few days ago on Tedium.com (butchered by The Times a few days later – I imagine they came to it through the same source as I did, Popbitch. Make of that what you will of the "paper of record") about chord changes and pop music. Essentially, the author claims (on the basis of a geek level analysis) that the chord change is a dying art in pop music. Interestingly, he isn't necessarily a fan of this compositional 'trick' (he repeatedly cites Michael Jackson's 'Man in the Mirror' as an exemplar of emotional manipulation. Rather, he is interested in the changes to the act of composition – specifically the increasing use of DAWs like Logic Pro, and the ever-suffocating and acontextual embrace of hip hip tropes. The article is really worth reading. Anyway, this is a roundabout way of saying that Chris is a good album. It is passionate, and it seeks to communicate this emotion unambiguously with its listener. Think about it as torch music for the 21st century. Perhaps I'm being calculating, or even cynical, but I do get the sense that a few switches from minor to major keys would have turned a good album into a great one. I think.
Quite good actually.
Teilweise sehr catch. Allerdings gefallen mir die älteren Sachen mehr.
Some great bops on here, first few tracks are fun. Almost a 4, but the second half is a bit forgettable
Meh
I have to admit I was kind of dreading this when I saw the album and read the Wikipedia overview. Just not my thing. But Christine kind of won me over after a bit. Still not something I'm likely to listen to, but he's got a great voice and the songs are pretty decent. Still hate the inorganic electronic sounds, but overall much better than expected. Listen with an open mind. 3 stars.
Good pop album. Enjoyed the listen, not sure it drew me in enough to listen again.
I think maybe I set my expectations a little high after reading the description of this album. Overall this kind of sounded like the bland 80s/90s French pop I used to listen to on the radio in France back in the day and I got kind of bored (if not a little nostalgic). I am certainly open to the possibility that I could spend a little more time with it to appreciate it more, especially the lyrics. (What I noticed most was the frequent use of the subjunctive.) The French language versions of the songs sounded much more natural, and I preferred that half quite a bit. I didn’t love this but I’m open to try again.
This album is decent contemporary electro-pop. I personally don't think it is important enough or good enough to be on the list, but it's fine. Best Songs: Girlfriend, Goya Soda Worst Songs: The stranger
Modern pop music. Sung in English and French. Good
Album grew a lot on me while listening. It's pretty damn good, the French versions of the songs are better imho, pretty cool sound!
Lange zit, maar ik vond het zeer de moeite waard. Toffe sfeer, ook met dat Franstalige
Dit was voor de verandering weer eens iets anders.
Nice easy listening pop.
Very much enjoyed the singer's voice. Was very easy to listen to.
Like a lightly flavoured mineral water or some vanilla ice cream with a slight sprinkle of Milo, this had a slight promise of something satisfying but ended up being rather generic.
Some relatively inoffensive pop with an interesting twist of having it in the two languages.
Pop elegante, sin grandes alardes. Buena voz. Tanto el disco en inglés como el de francés, con canciones un tanto modernas.
Michael Jackson is alive and well and secretly producing albums in France. Here is your proof.
Definitely not bad pop, very reminiscent of Michael Jackson. I am not too into this type of pop music so it's a bit to poppy for me, but for what it's doing its got it goin' on.
I appreciate having something outside of US/UK artists on the list, and didn't mind this. But didn't find it distinctive either
Enjoyable, doesn't hugely stand out
Mildly interesting, but not something that I would listen to often. R&B music with french singer/songwriter type vocals
Like this one! Great voice, fun pop. Cool the whole album repeats in French
Non è malvagio
Okay album Honestly it was better in French--listen to it in French :)
6/10 Best Song - Comme Si
For some reason I usually tend to not like pop music that comes from countries besides the US. I don't know why and I really try hard to not put truth into things like that but I think it might be that it's hard for me to enjoy pop music without understanding the lyrics. Oddly enough I think lyrics in pop music are rarely a standout feature however. But this album I thought sounded great! It had some Ariana Grande moments, and it had some Carly Rae Jepsen - Emotion type moments as well. Overall I enjoyed the album, and I think it's pretty ambitious to do the whole album in both English and French. Well done all around!
It grew in me, but I was struggling at the beginning ngl
3.5
This didn’t really resonate with me
Catchy retro-pop with very suggestive lyrics.
I really enjoyed listening to this again. I thought it was quite musically straightforward with some pleasing synth sounds. The first half is excellent but I found the second half less interesting. Favorite tracks were Girlfriend and 5 Dollars
Not exactly a mega-fan of what passes for contemporary R&B, but this is a pretty fair example of it. Actually liked this more than I thought I would.
Melodic and interesting. Probably benefits from a few listens.
Listened to both the English and French versions and felt the latter flowed better - the rich production complemented by the lyrical flow of the less-angular vocals made the LP feel warm and syrupy. This was both a benefit and detriment, as the synths are top-notch and the production clear without being overpowering, yet there's just too much here to stomach all in one sitting as the melodies vary little from track to track (though maybe that's because I listened to the whole 2LP at once).
I only listened to the first (English) half of this - wasn't going to punish myself by listening to it twice and at 90 minutes. Nothing standout really - it just sounded like random 2010s synthy pop music. Had a bit of a cool Michael Jackson flavour, but diluted too much with that modern "lo fi" approach and never really came out of the gate. It wasn't unpleasant though, and she can sing well enough. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing shithouse. Makes me wonder (again) why I needed to hear it before I die, but that's pretty normal. 3/5.
Better than I thought it was gonna be, has some nice tunes 6/10
Pretty standard generic indie pop. Don’t really see what’s so special about this that it needed to be on this list.
This album seems like pretty straight ahead pop, reasonably fresh and catchy but not (to me) particularly special. That said, Chris seems like a fascinating character and the videos I looked up did seem special. I think her personal, music, and dancing come together in a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. Any individual bit (like this album) might be a 3, but the whole package is closer to five. I hope she has a long, successful, groundbreaking career with many interesting phases.
Chris from Christine and the Queens is a difficult album to rate. There was nothing that I particularly liked or dis-liked from this album. I listened to the French album, and "5 Dols" is the only track that caught my attention enough for me to double check what I was listening to. I was surprised that this album was released in 2018, because the album sounded like 1990s to me (like stuff that I was chosing not to listen to of my own choice in the 90s). I guess this might round up to 3 stars because I didn't hate it?
This is French singer Héloïse Letissier, with a stage name of... Christine and the Queens? At first I thought it was a band, but it isn't, Christine and the Queens is a single person. Weird. So in her second album, Héloïse Letissier aka Christine and the Queens reportedly cut her hair, stood up, you know like a typical woman-gone-badass movie trope, and said "just call me Chris". Aaaand... I don't think synthpop is the best medium to deliver some messages in 2018. It sounds like somewhere between '80s synthpop and the minimalist R&B of the '10s. It has some great moments, but overall, it's pretty boring and monotonous. I guess the music scene in France is a bit different, of course it's different. Still, it's a pretty nice and accessible effort by her to spread awareness and share her journey as an LGBTQ+ member.
Great pop album. Catchy motifs and interesting melodies all around. (6/10) FT: Girlfriend, Damn,dis-moi
Calm pop Fun Jazzy smooth chords
J'aime beaucoup la musique et Chris a vraiment une belle voix, mais le chant saccadé et très mordant sur les consonnes font en sorte de vraiment rendre l'expérience moins agréable à mon oreille
It felt good, but I wasn't sure if it wasn't for me or if I didn't get it. I enjoyed listening, but something didn't quite click. It's the kind of stuff I like though, so maybe after a few listens I'd love it.
This album has a French version and an English version. For the sake of brevity, I'm only listening to the French version. Nice and sleek synthpop, very much calling from the sort of 80's aesthetic revival we've been having (see: Stranger Things, amongst other things). I don't often hear much out of France, so this is a good change. I can't say I feel it deserves much of a spot on the list, though, as it sort of comes across as "just good". How has this resonated since 2018? Not sure if it has. Critics seem to love this though. Good for them.
3/5
Decent
Though not a style of music I generally go for, I found this interesting enough to listen to the whole thing again, in French the second time.
A little long, but enjoyed it overall
Never heard of this band before, but their music is more proof that not all French pop is crap.
This album comes in both French and English versions. Although I didn't really engage with the lyrical content, the English version was still more enjoyable. It doesn't sound like a translation that has been shoehorned in. I'd be interested to know if the meanings of the songs are the same in both languages. Both versions are listenable and pleasant electropop. 3/5.
5/10
I like this album! The songs range from really vibe-y, synthy, smooth jams, to just-ok synthpop songs, and its perfect background music. I listened to both the English side and the French side of this and I preferred the French side slightly, but I love the French language so I'm biased hehe.
Cleary influenced by Michael Jackson, especially on first few songs. I thought the vocals were very good, and the production was decent, if somewhat cold and dry. But ultimately, the songs didn't grip me enough to want to listen to this again.
All a bit same same but love the Caroline Polacheck sounds
Kinda weird and not my style, but not bad.
More subdued that I anticipated. Quality beats and I enjoyed the message behind a lot of the songs. Honestly, not really my cup of tea, though. Second half not as interesting as the first half. Some solid singles though.
Pop. Inglés/francés
Whoa, very recent record. I've heard some Christine and the Queens before but not this album. Very art-poppy, but it retains the spirit and energy of pop pretty well. Really enjoyed the opening few tracks, but it lost some steam for me on the back end. A cool inclusion, though maybe not as game-changing as others I would put on here. I think the listmakers struggle a bit with what to include from this century; they're unable to benefit from hindsight for what's here and now. Still a good album though. Favorite tracks: Goya Soda, Girlfriend, Comme si. Album art: A bit more involved than the standard portrait, but nothing crazy. I saw this floating around a lot in 2018 and unfortunately it didn't grab me enough to listen to then. 3.5/5
Too damn long
3/5
Jai bien aime le cote electro pop. Cest francais en plus. Un bon album mais 1h30. Ca amene de la repetitij mais quand meme pas trop . 3.85
I like the lead singer's voice, but the music doesn't do a lot for me.
not really a fan, its alright but it just feels like its someone from france trying to be generic american pop
It’s not a bad pop album. Only listened to the French versions
I don't think this needed the dual language release for me. I far preferred the French but having all the tracks twice (basically) detracted a bit.
Was going to vote 2, but there are some decent french songs on there. A very long album though
Ooh la la
It’s not very good. But… I have definitely heard worse. It uses the “pop 89% chance of making a Next Big Hit” formula and doesn’t really bring anything else to the table. It’s not egregious but I find myself disliking the album because it wants to sing about “controversial” topics with such a cut-and-paste, uninspired musical style.
Not for me.
Pretty solid pop album that does me no harm with the french version being more authentic (three stars) compared to the English version (two stars). 2,5
Does anyone remember the How I Met Your Mother with Robin Sparkles? The crew found out when she was 16ish Robin was a teen pop star in Canada. They are watching the music video and Ted says "Wait, if this is the mid 90s why does it look like 1986?" Robin says "the 80s didn't hit Canada until 1993" Well, I guess the 80s didn't hit France until 2018. Crazy that something so new sounds so dated. It's not awful but it's not that good. It's Vanilla. Been there, done that. Not breaking any ground while other pop stars in 2018 were reaching new places. Meh. Good enough to give a 2.5 but I'll round down this time. 2 stars
Look, it’s a fine album, just not original, there are other artists who have done it better, and nothing memorable to make you want to go back. You didn’t even really dance to it, and you were dancing to everything then.
This was interesting but probably not something I would call essential. The synths and drums are punchy and her vocals are good in both English and French. It’s just not really my kind of music. What’s-Her-Face reminds me of Wandering Star by Portishead and I like that.
Poor man's Michael Jackson. Pretty meh.
Perfectly adequate pop music with a strong 80s vibe, but nothing special
The word that kept coming to mind listening to this was ‘safe’. Some nice musical bits but I found the vocals annoying. The French half was the better half.
92 minutes is a long time but this wasn’t too bad at all, above the middle of the two stars for “The Walker” alone. Tom.
Meh
Not anti-pop, anti-80s pop, or (god forbid) anti-gay, but I can't help but agree with the mostly middling reviews here. Soulless is the wrong word, but it doesn't evoke much in me personally. There are good lines in the wash of average (to below average) modern pop instrumentals, and authentic enough writing about the queer experience to not feel up opportunistic or hollow. It's just pretty enough to wash over you while you listen, but not lush enough to make you think about it the next day. With that said, if it made it easier for some gay french kids to get through high school, who am I to begrudge that?
Previously unknown. I feel like it needs more listens to connect with it.
This was ok pop. I didn't mind it at all, but it has french on it so, instead of a 3, I give it a 2.
I didn't see what the fuss was when it come out and I still don't. It's one of the more tepid example of French electro pop out there
bracie co to jest mocno slabe ona wuglada jak les
It was fine. There was no element of this album that justified it's inclusion on this list IMO. 2.5.
Boring
This wasn’t for me. Saying it’s “80s R&B” is a stretch, but I understand the importance of the material, just not my vibe.
You can pick your poison — lyrics in English or French. I tried both, but the only thing the experience underscored for me was how terrible I found the backing music. The producers of Chris want you to be pulled along by the lyrics, but I wish more time was spent on breaking out of the formulaic pop constructions. They feel dated but not ironically so. There's a lifelessness to many of them that honestly saddens me. The most challenging decision to make in this review is whether or not to give them a second star because they tried twice as hard to lay bare more interesting themes than typical pop lyrics, or should they get a single star because, outside of Doesn't Matter, this record so clearly misses the mark for this listener?
This is not an album I must listen to before I die. This is the participation trophy of albums. Crappy, boring, soleless, vapid pop. Something the streaming age allowed to become popular. I think I started liking it more when it repeated into the French only version of the songs.
Bland bland bland. Everything that is wrong with pop music today. Playing at a local clothes shop near you now.
This is lame. And so is this list
This is soulless, 80's wanna-be synth-pop drivel. I have no clue how it made this list.
60
Sounds like the music to a teenage romance/coming of age movie.
Je n'ai pas aimé. Felt repetitive and a bit boring. Not for me!
passeerde zonder echt te registreren
Way too frenchy for me. 2
no for me
Not bad, but didn't need to hear it before I died tbh. Plus points for the queer rep tho
Kinda whatever, not really my thing
stick to french mate
(51/100)
Not my favorite
meh, no fue inescuchable pero no tuvo nada memorable tampoco 2 estrellas
I can’t tell you how relieved I was to find out this is not an hour and a half album, but a 45 minute album with two options of English and French. On one hand, it’s not really a good look for an album if the person listening to it is relieved that it’s over. On the other hand, I didn’t have to listen for another 45 minutes. Ass.
agree with the consensus that this plays marginally better in French - for a non-speaker like me, it allows a more direct connection with Chris' lovely, powerful, calibrated-yet-smeary voice. when he lets his melodies breathe, slows things down, it's very nice. but i have to admit to finding this really anonymous - i've never been a fan outside of Twisted, and my senior year roommate People, I've Been Sad-ing her way through multiple lesbian situationships, and this confirmed that Chris isn't really an album artist for me. nothing bad, but nothing that sticks
I was vaguely familiar with this album, already being a fan of “Girlfriend”. It’s a fairly standard synth affair, but was just too inconsistent for me in terms of quality of songs. Really “Girlfriend” is the standout. It’s probably worth 2.5*, but it’s not good enough for me to give it 3*.
French electro-pop isn’t exactly something I’d ever choose to listen to. I didn’t hate it…but didn’t find it all that interesting.
Good but just not for me
I'm gonna be honest. I listened to half the first song, started sampling the most streamed songs, checked the reviews to make sure I wasn't missing anything, and yeah, I'm not missing anything. It's decent pop. So long as you can relax and enjoy it for what it is (cheesy synth pop, and hey, ain't nothing wrong with that), it's not bad. But it isn't remotely close to being an album I must listen to.
Что-то похожее на попсу и РнБ, но всё же ни то, ни другое, но и ничего хорошего.
It had some catchy moments, but overall not something I want to explore any further.
Nah. But I’ll give it a 2.
not a big fan
2/5
Pretty generic pop, but the French just sounds nice
Generic pop, with echoes of the 80s. The odd strain of something. Formulaic. It’s all a bit meh. It’s beyond me why this stands out. 2 Star
This did not need to be a double album.
If the appeal here is meant to be the inclusion of queer pop on the 1001albums list, there are far more interesting albums to choose from. Why do I reach for this over Renee Rap, Chappell Roan, Rebecca Black, Slayyyter..? Not bad, just boring and french
Half-english, self-obsessed vanity over glittering synth beats. At least it sounds good
I thought I would like this more as the first French album I've gotten.
weird
This is fine? On one hand I appreciate that there is some queer rep in this list, but on the other hand I feel like there should be many other better options. It's just pretty standard pop, but gay and French.
Sounds better in French but I don’t know French and get bored if I can’t follow along with the lyrics at least a little. So I couldn't get into it. Beats sounded fine. A bit retro which is ok.
can stay in 2018
Girlfriend was played incessantly on 6Music a few summers back. I didn’t like this song as it was just rehashing 80s music with a French twang. The rest of the same.
Nah
None of these songs go anywhere and there are about twice as many of them as there should be. Synthy europop should be more fun than this.
2.5/5 - My ceiling for this style of pop is about 2.5, and this hit it. I'll never listen to this again, but I didn't reach to turn it off either.
kinda boring. Wish i could enjoy it more. Not bad but nothing evn mildly interesting
I don’t understand why this album is on the list. Once again so many better albums out there that are not on the list.
so this came out in 2018?? could have fooled me. sounded like bland mid 90's pop
perfectly adequate pop music, I've never really liked Christine and the Queens and in fact kind of dread when he collabs with artists i do like. it's nothing special or unique musically and i think there are (especially now in 2026) better and more innovative contemporary queer artists to populate the list with, although i can at least imagine the appeal for others also, my sincere condolences to the reviewer complaining about the length who seemingly sat and listened to an album they didn't like twice back to back, although i suppose it's not to the album's credit that they didn't notice
This is one of the albums where I wonder why is it on the list?
Er noe MJ-inspirasjon her. Utførelsen er ikke helt på topp. Forglemmelig.
2.5. Є хороші пісні, але й є відверті філери. Не дуже розумію вибір цього альбом для списку.
An interesting thing about this album is that there are two versions of "Chris". You see, "Chris" was recorded in both English and French. I've only listened to the English version plus the two French exclusive tracks. The problem with "Chris" is that it's boring and unoriginal. However, I do have to commend Redcar for performing a whole album in two languages, an amazing feat. 2 stars for "Chris".
there was maybe two okay pop songs on here. i admired the drama and the synths but the record didn’t feet memorable.
The French versions were better. An album made in 2018 that sounded like it was made in 1986. Didn't work for me.
While the voice is beautiful and there were some good tracks, it was a lot that just didn’t vibe for me. Plus, it’s just long for what it is.
I didn’t dislike it, but it seems like an extremely random addition to this list. A one and done listen for me.
I like my share of pop chanson, but that was a bit difficult to get through. Some may find the production to be cohesive, but for me it leaned towards repetitive. I did enjoy the English/French split format though.
It was pretty cool for what it's worth. I was thinking of giving the album 3.5 initially but then it dragged on and on.... Very "sign of the times" pop with not much to think back on or many reasons to revist. I chose to split the album up, listening to 6 of the tracks in english and 6 in french. That was a nice novelty and the production wasn't too bad. Alas, not enough to write home about...
Has some good sounds and pretty good vocals it’s also very unique that it’s in two languages. But overall I’ll never listen or like this
It’s cool that someone made a duo-lingual double album. Sucks that it’s late 20 teen girl pop trying to sound like the 80s. Not unlistenable, not worthy of the list either.
A couple of decent synthpop songs but mostly not for me. Favorite track: Doesn't Matter
Vraiment un artiste que je n'aime pas. Mais il est plus supportable à écouter qu'à regarder en plus.
Didn't do much for me,
I appreciated and enjoyed the bubbly production. The whole album feels like the best a studio can put forward. The instrumentation is great and poppy. But I just did not connect with the vocals or lyrics in any way. I felt like the album could have benefited from more humor or just general silliness. This album felt super cold and serious, which personally, I find to be incredibly boring and dry for pop music. Honestly this album doesn't deserve a 1, Its just no where near bad enough or offensive enough to warrant that. But It's DEFINITELY NOT getting s 3.
pourquoi???
This reminds me of the music lightly playing overhead while browsing through boutique type clothing store at the mall.
I feel like I’ve heard this before…only done better, by way better artists. It’s not bad. It’s just utterly forgettable. At times even venturing into muzak land. Not sure why it was included on this list
I mean…sure 🤷♂️ Not terrible and listenable but just kind of okay. Parts kind of sounded like MJ but not quite. Even got some weekend vibes. But like…not as good. 2.5
Another French album. The last one was actually quite good so I am excited for this. It is long though so I will only be listening to disc 1. Track 1 is good, it's definitely giving pop music though. Honestly, I cannot tell if I like it or not. I think right now, listening to it at the moment, it is good. However, I don't think I'll ever want to put this on just to listen to. Track 3 has very strong 80s pop vibes, and I do not love it. I am not sure if I even want to finish the first disc. I am not really enjoying this. Yeah I am about 6 tracks in and I am going to have to leave this here. I will give this a two because it is at least more enjoyable than Dummy by Portishead. Just not in the mood to finish this today.
Favorite Track: Doesn't matter

Je ne dis pas que ce n'est pas bien mais cette musique ne me parle pas.
Gear: Grado Hemp Artwork: 🆒🖍️📸 Production: 🧼🙂👍 Music: 👩🎤🧁📼 Rating: 🫧🫧(🫧)/5
The back half of this album offers more variety over generic pop. The French version is a better listen.
The English album was first and that was horrible, the French one was a lot less cringe.
There are songs on here that definitely jam, some are just ok. I had no idea what all was going on with this at first (meaning Chris himself). I thought it was a woman singing, but apparently it’s him but he’s a woman sometimes? I mean whatever, I’m down for the cause, it was all just very confusing to me at first. So artistically it’s not bad. As far as dance-y pop-y albums go I’ve heard both better and worse. I didn’t dislike it but I don’t know that I’ll revisit it.
Listens: 1.5 Standout Tracks: Damn (what must a woman do) Synthpop. Reminds me of La Roux, except, this album was sooo long. Cut it in half and it would be infinitely more tolerable. Half the songs are in French, so I can't really speak to the lyrical content too much, but the synth beats were okay.
Interesting. Poppy French. Nothing mind blowing and probably would not search it out.
This sounds VERY MUCH like 80's - 90's girl-band electro-pop. It sounds very much like someone, but I can't put my finger on it. Pitchfork: 7.9 Rolling Stone: n/a
It seemed like ordinary pop music to me.
To me, this is cringe pop; at least, that’s what I was doing throughout the album.
I wasn't able to listen to this album in its entirety. It's too fucking weird but generic at the same time. Pop.
You know that running joke in HIMYM where Robin Sparkles was an 80s teen pop star in the 2000s because Canada was 20 years behind culturally? Well apparently France is over 30 years behind
meh
Dark, queer pop should be a hit for me, but this album didn't get there. The music didn't grab me. I had a hard time understanding the lyrics. Upon listening to Disc 2, the songs are a lot better in the original French, despite not understanding French at all! I still don't expect to listen to this again. 2.5* Top song: 5 dols
Eh modern pop with a twinge of 80's synth. Not for me. 4/10
Ei ollut mua varten. Aika löysä. 2/5
There were some good grooves and some good vibes but overall this was a "meh" for me. Euro synth pop was better en Francais when I just didn't try to understand it. Listened before? N Saved some tracks? N Favorite tracks? comne si, The Stranger ⭐⭐ Liked it un peu
is ok, good if u like it Will I listen to again: 0%
Poor girl wanted to be MJ so bad. They need to check her ranch Kept switching between the English and Portuguese versions and the latter was a bit better, at least she doesn't sound like MJ there
Weird. It cant decide what era it wants to sound like
Well-made pop that didn't leave an impression on me. The vocals were nice and some of the instrumentals were good (Goya Soda) but overall I didn't gel with this in particular. Some songs were repetitive to the point of being grating and I can't see myself returning to this. Highlights: Doesn't Matter
This is ok. I like the singers voice even if disco/dance music is not what i am into.
Chris is 2000s French electro-pop that wants to sound 80ish. I’m sure someone will like it, but that person is not me. 3.8/10
this ones really just not for me lmfao
A strange addition to the list - I can think of way better (and more important / impactful) albums from the late 2010s that should be on this list. I've not listened to a lot of Christine and the Queens but this is pretty much what I expected based on the limited knowledge I did have. Not bad but just kind of boring. This isn't objectively bad like some of the stuff on this list, but I also will not put it on again on my own volition. A very high two - I just can't bring myself to give it a three.
far from the worst of the list, still does nothing for moi
French Pop.
I guess if we are "cancelling" Michael Jackson and pretending his music never existed, then this album could be considered worth a listen. But as it is, I sounds like recycled MJ vocal hooks over 80s beats. And sure, if this came out in the 80s, it may have had some impact musically. But it came out in 2018. I understand culturally this album is of importance. But as just an album to listen to, it sounds like radio pop that'll be stale and forgotten about in 6 months.
2.75
A collection of synth pop that lacked any real energy or purpose
Voru þetta sömu lögin en bara á frönsku eða var þetta bara allt eins? Erfitt að segja, fannst eitthvað kjánalegt við þetta
80s synth pop with a good but not memorable singer. I guess fake 80s is good, psst its not. Its not nearly as bad as I'm making it out to be & it sure as hell isn't as Great as they are claiming it is. Feels So Good is the silliest, fake-ist 80s song on here. Just pick a random 80s singer artist & it will be better than this. This isn't my cup of tea, so I'll wade into French version to see how deep I get. Not far. The French versions are better but I don't care enough to listen more. Doesn't matter is a great song in either language. It's poppy, it can be fun. I just do not care for it. You might. 2.5
Not really my style, and not much else to say. It could be good, but I don't think I am into the genre enough to be able to tell. It sounds ok, but didi not like the pacing and the overall feel. One of those cases where I truly believe I am not the target audience. And that's fine.
Didn’t finish, it’s ok but too mediocre?
Revival of shit that sucked in the first place. It probably sounds the way she intended it, but I don't like it.
The first half sounded like Pop for English language learners. I liked the French versions better but still not my jam
Electronic Pop is not my thing but if it’s yours this is pretty decent.
I don't like this type of music.
Bit of an 80s sound, a little disco. Not my cup of tea.
Felt like run of the mill contemporary pop to me. Listened to the English half (side 1). Standout was "Doesn't Matter" because some of the synth was kinda cool.
Second album. Pop. Interesting, a double album. Once in English and once in French. Euro Lorde? That's how it feels to me. Crystal clear production. Some decent Synth stuff and samples. It's all a bit generic though and nothing really jumped out at me. The French version is the better one.
I was really hoping this would be some kind of glam rock, gender-bending rock and roll powerhouse of an album. It was not.
Fine as background or elevator music but relatively innocuous and not particularly noteworthy.
Prétentieux.
Not sure what’s important or memorable about it to deserve inclusion on the list
androgynous vocals with a pop sound. on some songs the singer kind of reminds me of a more feminine version of michael jackson. parts of it were interesting, but mostly not for me.
Meh
I see why people like it but never quite did it for me
we have a new winner of the undeserving pitchforkcore award
Nope. Giving it two stars, but nope.
This album did nothing for this listener, except provide calm listening background music. Felt like any of these songs and music could be done by just about any other female musical artist. I played through the entire album and have to say I liked the french version better. Anyway, nice voice but felt I've heard all this a million times through the years. 2.5
2.5 French pop music - not so different from our own. In this album’s case, so much so that I couldn’t tell you anything that it does any better or really any differently than the kind of stuff that’s been on American radio rotation within the past ten years or so. I mean, there’s admittedly a bit of an ‘80s flair to it here, but I feel like that’s been the trend in pop music as of lately and by no means limited to this album - unless this did it first? (F***, 2018 was nearly 8 years ago). Either way, regardless of whatever influence this may or may not have had, for me, it was just a serviceable pop album - though clearly Rahim Redcar had many influences of his own while recording this, with Michael Jackson being an artist that came to mind heavily throughout my listening. However, those inspired tracks usually ended up being the ones that I enjoyed more - I mean, it’s kind of hard to go wrong trying to emulate the King of Pop. Goya Soda in particular was probably my favorite of the bunch, but come on, is it not borderline Wanna Be Startin’ Something? I’m sure most are aware, but the version on streaming is actually the same album twice, once in English, once in French. Now, normally I have a harder time attaching myself to songs written in foreign languages, but I actually thought the French version was a bit better. I don’t really have any good reason for that to be honest - I guess it felt like it flowed better and that Rahim was putting a bit more into it with his native tongue. Also, it’s not like there was really a ton of substance in the lyrics anyway besides the occasional agnostic rumination. All in all, pretty mid. Not the worst pop music I’ve heard, but certainly not the best either (certainly better than most of the early 2000s radio play though).
Overall: 4/10 I wanted to like this a lot cause it's nice to see some queer representation, but I found it kind of boring. There's much better pop artists out there. The vocals were nice and I appreciate that there are french and english versions (the french version is better). I'm sure some people will really enjoy this but it's not for me. Fav Song: Doesn't Matter (that's the name of the song, I'm not being rude lol)
2.5 - decent 80s pop
Way too long
Some fun cool michael jackson type beats. But it was hard to understand the singer I felt a lot.
Pretty good sound.
not for me !
I should like this. But I did not. Pretty boring if I’m being honest.
Poppy shit, unclear of why it's here. Sounded kind of generic. 2*
Not offensive- but not enjoyable in the least.
Le crap.
No private session used for Spotify and I had no idea what I was getting in to but was a bit concerned when I saw it was a double album. I know I have made my opinions one double albums before, but typically a double album would be much better as a normal album, getting rid of some of the crap. Anyway back to the double album in question, its not my thing, really digital and synth heavy, pretty poppy. The switching from French to English and back was confusing as I wasn't sure if I was mishearing the lyrics or not. All that being said, I didn't mind it, might have rated it higher if it wasn't a double album because it was a bit much.
Not my vibe, but still had some bops
Listened to the English version plus the French only songs. French is overrated, those songs blew. Why do you think Phoenix sings in English? It's songs! With music and lyrics!! We got this but no Bon Iver? "Doesn't matter" is the only song that stands out but I doubt I'd Shazam it if I were out at a bar and it came on. What is it about the MJ impersonation that I hate so much while I love when MJ does it? I guess it's the same issue I had with Kevin Parker's John Lennon impersonation or Foxygen's Mick Jagger one.
I thought I was going insane
This album is gay, French, and pop, and as with most things that are gay, French, or pop, I think it's good that it exists, but it's not for me. Whether it's in English or French makes no big difference. However, I like the 80s synth retro vibe they've got going.
Decent pop, but not for me
Is it impressive to release two versions of an album in different languages? Yes, yes it is. But that doesn't necessarily mean that either version is that good. I applaud the effort, even if I didn't like it that much. The french version was better. 2.5/5 Won't listen again
I find this perfectly serviceable pop with nice vocals, good production and nothing to offend. The red trouser wearer in me may suggest this wouldnt be famous without the zeitgeist catching trans ethos, but there is no way to prove it disprove this theory. However, i can definitively state its too long by about 40%
Not my vibe.
So there I was, weeks and months ago, pounding the desk for more non-English albums. So here I am now, realizing I can’t have my cake and eat it too. It’s not that I didn’t like this album outright, but it just sounds very much like 2018. Maybe that’s of more value to some, but I lived through that time and listened to plenty of pop then - this project doesn’t do a lot to distance itself from the sounds of that time. My picks from this album are the French version of “Doesn’t Matter” for having a great pop chorus, and the English version of “Goya Soda” for sounding like the blueprint for Caroline Polacheks “Desire, I Want To Turn Into You” album (which you should probably just listen to instead of Chris). Not sure if this is a 2 or a 3 stars
Well, it’s ok - very lush pop, but the production and arrangement is so thick that there is no space for the music to breathe. Not bad, not good.
Interesting concept but poor execution. I feel like a lot of meaning was lost due to bad translations.
Listened Before? N Well, I don't speak French, so I needed to listen to the English version of this album and I gotta say.... I don't think he has a complete grasp on the language... or it just doesn't translate very well. Either way, the music is enjoyable but the lyrics make no sense in many places. Too bad. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Comme si
Pop music, ok
Confused me. And was very boring
I like one song on this and one other song thats not on this album. The rest feels like daft punk but with more androgyny, pop and sugar.
This is way out of my lane for music I enjoy, but I gave it a try. I only listened to the english songs. I did not enjoy it and found myself skipping almost every song. The only song I listened to all the way through was Girlfriend, as it had some semblence to funk and groove. The rest sounded like boring pop. Add on top that they're French... yeah, no thanks. 1.5/5 = 2 stars because of the Girlfriend song.
1.74
Pretentious, overly artsy, wannabe 80s synth pop.
This really isn't my thing. A second disc of the same album, but in French, REALLY is not my thing
Meh
Meh, ok but no standouts
Considering this is one of the latest releases on the list and one of very few post 2010, this albums inclusion on this list is beyond me. Its fine, it's a cleanly produced and written pop album with decent cohesion, but we are really going with this to represent new music worthy of holding up with multiple albums worth of bands performing 'standards'. The metric for this list is an absolute fucking joke. Charli XCX's Pop 2 came out a year before this. SOPHIE had already dropped Product 3 years before this. So much interesting and innovative new pop music had been released prior to this album, yet here we are with a milquetoast safe pop album as the choice to hear before I die and for what reason. Because its well written? It's bland 80s inspired pop exploring themes of gender and vulnerability. of Montreal were doing that shit since 1996 to far greater effect and with a healthy dose of artistic merit. It's fine, it's not bad. But fuck me the 2010's have a million better albums on offer.
