Reviews (page 3 of 7)

I knew Girlfriend already but that's far from the best track here. I liked both the English and French versions: 80s pop recreated with quality with existential lyrics.

Ok, I was a little intimidated seeing the hour and a half album length. At the turning point I clued in that the album was recorded in both French and English, which is kinda neat. I was somewhat familiar with Christine and the Queens from their wonderful contribution to the 2024 MGMT album. Chris is a really well produced synth pop album. There is a good variety to it though I wish they had a few livelier tracks, the moodiness was great though. Good stuff, great voice, excellent talent. 3.5 rounded up stars

The global reviews for this are unnecessarily harsh! That being said this is extremely my shit

I listened to the english version of this, and wow it was much better than expected. The production is amazing, I was listening to that most of the time. Gives me a CHVRCHES vibe. Was close to a 5 but a couple songs I didn't really care for, but still a nice album. I'l have to check out the french version sometime

Good luck trying to describe the artist or any pronouns here. I'll just say that Chris is a stellar pop record in either French or English and definitely left its' mark on the genre.

Listened to both the English and French version of Chris. Liked the English, loved the French. The artist is definitely more confident in the native tongue and it shows - it's simply just more charming and feels more complete.

Solid European pop. A great album for a semi-mellow party vibe.

I'm surprised people are so scathing about this, I suspect some hefty bias from the covert art. Like any good record, it takes some listens to appreciate the arrangements.

I really enjoyed some of the songs on the album. The vocals are impressive. I liked What's her face. She had some T-Swift vibes towards the end of the album.

I listened to this while getting ready to go out this evening, and that was a perfect way to enjoy it, I think- only a couple of lyrics jumped out, and mostly I just relaxed into the drum machines and twinkling. Doesn’t Matter was my favourite, and I liked 5 dollars too. That run with Goya Soda was definitely my favourite stretch. Musically, I sort of see Chris as a more impressive La Roux, and the songs felt dated in sort of the same way as La Roux, a very 2010s approximation of 80s futurism. I initially thought this was a double album and was relieved to realise it was only the same songs twice, once in French and once in English. The songs already felt a little repetitive by the end of the eleven in English, and I wasn’t excited at the prospect of another eleven, which says something. 3.5 rounded to 4.

quite good! i wish the french version was listed first

Damn - this is pretty good It grew on me as the album went. It’s kinda fun, good to put on in the background but I don’t think I’d listen to it otherwise. I’m open to it though. I listened to some of the French version and now that I couldn’t understand the words I actually enjoyed it as fun background music even more Best - Doesn’t Matter Worst - Girlfriend

I only listened to the french half but it was great. Solid album gj frenchies

Christine your a Queen in my eyes! Great album. Even though I didn't understand 95% of the lyrics, they had a way of speaking to me.

If listening to this is gay then I'm the biggest queer on earth 🏳️‍🌈✨️

Electronic pop Feels heavy yet effortless And quite nice to dance

Good stuff.

I only listened to the English version so that's all I'll be judging this on. I was pleasantly surprised with this album. Euro electric music is generally not a genre I enjoy that much, but this was a nice blend with pop that gave it more listenable edge. None of the songs made me want to skip them or stop listening which is always a plus. Overall I enjoyed this one, but not sure how much I'll come back to it. Probably a 3.5 with half stars.

Is it a good album? Yeah. Right up my alley. Is it an important album? I don't know. I was in my prime when this album came out and I know teegan and Sara were more prominent, as well as quite a few other queer/women/trans acts that seem in my eyes as more popular. At least in America. Not to say that there can be only one non cis male white person on this list, but I'd be surprised if any one of those other bands are on this.. so I think this should be on the list but I hope there's about 4-5 other albums of this era too...

Favourite songs: Feel So Good, Doesn't Matter, Damn (What Must a Woman Do), Goya Soda, Follarse Least favourite songs: What's-Her-Face 4/5

This was fun background noise 3.5 rounded up

OK, sure it's got a real eurotrash vibe but the instrumentals sound really good.

Never heard of them before but turned out to be a really good album. Some great songs on there, catchy melodies and a great voice. Will be definitely checking out other albums!

Unapologetically quer pop. I really liked this one. I am impressed by Chris' ability to express himself in English and French, though the French side of the double disk set clearly sounds better. Unfortunately, I'm not able to understand a single word of that. High 4.

Grym pop.

It is an ironclad fact of music that French people occasionally make great music. Chris/Christine falls into that pantheon. The vocals are beautiful, and the understated synth music gives it an 80s/early 90s feel while still being recognizably modern. Really fun listen 4/5

This album was exactly what I needed this morning. Queer French hyper-pop, performed with Gallic elan by lead singer Chris. Unusually, this is a double album with the same songs presented in English and French, and on balance I think I preferred the French ones which gave my schoolboy French a workout. This would go down a storm on Eurovision and I mean that in the nicest way possible. It’s accessible, engaging and fun, and I will seek out more! Eurotastic!

It's about twice as long as an album should be, imo. But it's still pretty bloody good. And then I discover it's bilingual twin versions of the same record. All is forgiven 🙏😅

I listened to the English version. I wonder why now? I own the French language version of debut 'Chaleur Humaine' and it is superior. However, this particular rosbif went all Brexit and opted for the album I could at least understand. I do have a peculiar respect for artists who pander to foreign audiences with different versions of tracks or albums - Elvis, the Beatles and Kraftwerk amongst them. I've always been tickled by David Lee Roth's attempt at outreach via a Spanish version of 'Eat 'Em And Smile'. Go give it a listen it's a gas. Anyway...I'm supposed to be talking 'Chris'. It's fine! The album is frontloaded with the best tracks, including 'Girlfriend', but it doesn't drop off - more like a lengthy levelling out. It's cool, 21st century space pop by an artist with a strong vision and a neat sound. 'Chris' just feels so light - but not insubstantial. There's a weightlessness to the synths that power this collection, bringing to mind phrases like 'nimble' and 'graceful'. I went on to listen to a few of the French language tracks, and indeed, they are better than their Anglophone counterparts. Three stars in English, four stars in forrin'.

Great album! I’m glad I know this artist now.

Tough one to rate. It gets the 4 because, objectively (as much as that's possible), this was solid. I thought the execution and production was tight and never too much or too little. As far as my personal enjoyment, this was right down the middle. It was fine. Good even. But this is the kind of breezy pop that doesn't quite make an impression on me. Wouldn't turn the channel, but I wouldn't seek it out.

First half was great, but it did get a bit long and turned into French.

Can't understand the lyrics, but that's hardly an issue when the sad girl vibes are immaculate. Love the mix of electropop and disco-funk.

I think something I like about euro pop is the trance and house influence. Reminiscent of Bjork at points, this album was a super pleasant surprise. I think the double album holds it back, unfortunately. Judging the album as a whole, having a second disc that is basically the same as the first is definitely a hindrance. Being the pretentious ass I am, I prefer the French side.

Something more modern, and not from the UK or US? Nice to see for variety. I liked the singer's voice, I liked the bass-lines, I thought the songs had just enough variation to keep me interested. Doesn't Matter stuck with me longest. Make Some Sense was the only song that I wanted to skip, but it was short.

i don't understand it, but it's a bop

A certified bop!

Belle voix profonde, sans affectation. Production léchée et airs marquants, faciles à retenir.

3.5/5. Pretty good, I found this refreshing. I liked most of the songs.

My guilty pleasure is gay pop

Very enjoyable electropop album.

Wanted this to resonate with me more. Its def great pop

First time listening to Christine and the Queens, and I am now a fan.

Awesome contemporary french new wave . I enjoyed this quite a bit. The second half is all English versions of the first half. Last song (The stranger) has Shifting Sand Land energy.

This was fun! I definitely recognized the first song and a lot of it sounded familiar. Very Jacksony. The French know how to make a pop song.

This was fun if only for how modern it sounded. It was crystal clear and so clean sounding which was awesome. The album was too long, but the best tracks were a lot of fun. Good Melodies and nice disco-y guitar. Reminds me a lot of Haim.

I did the French version, thought it was 'tres bien' (very good)

The French are just so good at music, aren't they? This is totally pleasant 80s-style pop that never stumbles into pastiche. Maybe a little too light in places, but it just sounds so damn nice.

Pre listen mood: Apprehensive, never heard before. Cover seems pretentious and imagine album will be too Better than expected with some good melodies and production.

Excellent.

4.5+ but not sure exactly how much by?

I love 80s pop too much to not like this! It is a bit on the dragging side, but a great listen all in all.

Some great tunes and great production here

Much more subdued and restrained than I expected, but Chris(tine) pulls it off pretty decently. The instrumentals are extremely atmospheric and airy and the vocals on top of nice and chill with some really good hooks. I think where the album falls short is the lyrics which maybe I just need to read into more, but I just didn't catch what some of the songs were about or were just very surface level. 7/10

Favourite tracks: girlfriend; five dollars; don't matter; comme si; the stranger

I really didn’t want to like this because it’s French and gay but I liked it. B teir.

Listened to both French and English versions. Great pop.

never heard of the band before. this was a lovely french bop.

A wonderful unexpected find. More listening to do. Also: thanks (via internet rabbitholes) to Chris's parents for introducing me to Klaus Nomi. I didn't know I needed avant-garde German electro-pop covers of The Twist and You Don't Own Me.

Nice album. Remember Christine from jools Holland really nice visual artist.

Very 80s inspired, I like it a lot. Only listening to the English version as that’s my main language. I’d never heard of this artist but I’m glad that I’ve had the opportunity to listen to their music. Kind of reminds me of LP.

Great Album! Christine is a very talented artist and their music is fantastic. Not quite a 5 for me, but a worthwhile listen. Highly recommend their 2020 album La vita nuova.

4.0 - This type of 80’s revivalist synth pop is totally my jam and this record is a fine example of that sound. Another welcome discovery from this list that’s worth a revisit.

Doesn’t Matter was fantastic. Great pop songwriting even if it all blurs together a bit

The French version is the better delivery here, but both are decent

Funky 80s synth pop. Good vocals. First half better than the second.

French haim

Groovy, synth pop style. Not something I would find on my own, but I found myself getting down to this album. I would listen to it again.

Never really thought this would be something I would like but there is something in there... something in the rhythm, lyrics, and haunting voice on some of the tracks. I love the way she stays in her vocal range and doesn't press it.

I worry that too much retro culture is bad for the soul of the present day, but I also worry that the pop timeline went somehow awry in the 90s… so the rise in the 2010s of heartfelt, inventive 80s retro pop as a major indie subgenre seems to me mostly a good thing. The tunes and production on this album are obvious hipsterized 80s pastiche (with heavy Michael Jackson influence) but they’re also just really good. Unfortunately, the lyrics and the artistic outlook (and the scansion, my god) are hopelessly euro-weirdo, which to me feels like a waste of the excellent production. It all threatens to be pretty irritating… but I found it easy enough to ignore the words and imagine my own meanings, so I’m still giving it four stars. The sounds just worked for me.

I can see hints of an electro-pop Haim. I'm all for it!

Fresh multilingual pop with a lot of heart from an artist I had never heard of before. Really grew on me and I found that I kept coming back to listen to more.

Heard before. I remember hearing Girlfriend one late night in the car while on vacation and that memory stays with me. A nice pop record, and the interesting thing is that all its songs are both in English and French. I think I like the French versions a bit more. + Girlfriend + Doesn't matter + 5 dols + Goya! Soda!

Really long album but divers enough to not get bored. I dont get that this is not more populair. Should get way more airplay.

Good album!

Am I the only one who thought that was Christian Slater on the cover? No offence to Christine. I like this but I kept wishing the music was a little faster, though. It was like a slower La Roux (who isn’t also French, despite the name). Overall I liked this and will probably save a few of the peppier songs.

Much much better than I expected. Saved a couple of songs off it. Didn't explore the French side.

Loved! The kind of music that you want to see live at a music festival.

Pretty fresh and crisp, some nice beats and cool synthy frills.

When I started listening to this the first song or two had me dreading when was to come. A couple of songs later I was feeling better about it. By the end I had been won over.

At first i wondered why this was on the list, but i think this illustrates a nice exploration of gender and identity in a pop music format. Musically its not reinventing the wheel, but its a style i like and its well written, so its enjoyable to listen to.

Wowsers, looked at the album cover assumed it was some early 80's disco, turns out it's newish and I know loads of the songs from the radio. Some top stuff on here.

Really enjoyable, easy, listen.

Chris is the first predominantly English language album by Christine and the Queens. It is an advance over the debut but does not represent the fully realized vision of the band. The last two plus the first are connected as a triptych and this is not. It's a great album in of itself but an outlier in the Christine and the Queens canon.

honestly such a fun album and it’s one of the only ones that I’ve listened to regularly as a whole work since it came out. bored if the naysayers afraid of French and or other foreign words in songs. You’d like kpop if you just had the ability to enjoy music truly.

Actually has a lot of solid groovy bangers.

baita som, popzao moderno, lembra o michael jackson até

Cool but the French version!

That was fun and frenchy

Love this album.

Not bad for a band I’d never heard

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Comme si, 5 dollars

Fínasta popp. Fíla röddina mjög vel.

Pretty cool album.

Kova! Gillar esketiten

Awesome synth pop dance. Love the sound of 80s brought bang up to date. Great.

I was a huge fan of their first album, and this album is a new favourite. I don't know what it is about her music that just sucks me in.

I really enjoyed this. I remember this act performing at Glastonbury and there being a big buzz around them, but had never listened. It’s very eclectic but very accessible.

Moderne fransk/engelsk elektronisk pop

Strong 80's vibe. I hate the 80's, but really enjoyed this album. A little plastic, but was happy to listen to it.

Interesting that this album has the songs both in English and French. The English wasn’t too bad, the French was the best version of the two even though I don’t speak it. Decent music from a band I had never heard of before. Cool!

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would—great voice, great synth sounds, and the bonus duplicate album in French!

Pop, dance, a veces chill out.

When reading reviews I had to laugh at how the reviewers' pronoun confusion led to almost exclusive use of non gender specific pronouns - for example, "I love Chris' singing." Better safe than sorry - lol. When you change your moniker from Christine and the Queens to Chris you have to expect some confusion to result. He changes his moniker to "Redcar" on his next album so the confusion is staying. Do I like this synth pop? In the early / mid 80s - yeah but not recently. Do I like this album? Yeah. He makes some bopping tunes. A lot of reviews point out Michael Jackson influences but I think Eurythmics influence is more accurate. He's a good singer, made a decent album and has a personality that keeps things interesting.

Yes, I think I’m a fan. Punchy contemporary euro pop. Solid production. The multilingual release is a nice idea. Personal pronouns aside all very good.

Perfectly enjoyable but not particularly memorable

I need to brush up on my french!

Electronica for people who don't like electronica. I enjoyed hearing more rock and funk elements here, it added a certain edge to the "synthetic" sound of the electro-pop music. It's really catchy too, although I feel like the French version would be better for this list. Standout tracks were Girlfriend, Goya Soda, Damn (what must a woman do), and Feel so good.

I love that she sings in multiple languages. Really enjoyed this album.

I really like Christine & The Queens and I enjoyed this album. A maybe overly generous 4*

Great album! It took some time to really appreciate, but it's just a really fun album to listen to. Favourites are Comme Si, Goya Soda, Damn and What's-her-Face. Only listened to the English version though.

Gallic disco pop is going to be a pretty easy sell to me. The passion, subject matter and general groove of the thing are all very enjoyable, and she seems a smart and intelligent lyricist. The songs didn't quite jump from enjoyment to love for me but it's still a VERY strong album. And getting the entire thing in English and French is an act of generosity I can get behind. Merci!

(S)he has great tone. The tone is that electro pop rock sound. a couple tracks in and im intrigued but not blown away yet.

Kind of sounds like Chvrches. Pop 80s vibe but with modern sound engineering. Good underrated album

Fun stuff

I enjoyed this so much more than i thought i would. Shades of MJ in parts. Great pop banter. Some say Italians do it better. The french aren't too far behind

Really great album. Michael Jackson, HAIM, Teegan and Sara sound to it. I will definitely relisten this

Gave me Caroline polachek vibes and a little bit of panic? Specifically too weird to live album. Definitely gonna relisten

My kind of stuff

I normally don't like the french, but I can handle this

Some serious in your face music. I had hear the hits but not the album. I think I'm a new fan. The beats, the singing, the synths, they all hit really freakin hard.

Way more fun as a pop album than I was expecting. Real cool sound, and listening in French and English was great. Didn't think I'd listen to both in full, but I did.

Christine starts Chris firmly in her comfort zone, moving gradually into some new and sparser territory. Her voice remains incredibly compelling for me, especially on the French side, the set of tracks to listen to as far as I'm concerned. I think of Chris as a companion to the much-loved debut, incremental rather than revolutionary, still real real good.

Yes — I love 80’s throwback pop like this. Albums like this are a goldmine for party playlists. 😁 Her voice is perfect for this style and the production is packed with fun details. Some of the lyrics surprised me. Like the chorus of “Doesn’t Matter,” where she sings about not knowing if God is real. Most songs in this genre are about about hooking up in the club. I love the willingness to go for deeper subject matter in dance music. Highlights: “Comme Si,” “The Walker,” “Doesn’t Matter,” “Goya Soda,” “Feel So Good,” “The Stranger” On streaming you can also listen to the French version of the album. Very cool to hear the French versions of these songs!

Really fun pop album, well produced and very funky. I really like the idea of a bilingual album, very unique. I definitely preferred the french versions though.

Think I love this. Didn't realise this was who "Girlfriend" came from. Sophisticated pop.

I liked this. Not sure how much, and not sure whether I preferred the French or English versions.

This surprised me. Not exactly my genre of choice, but I really enjoyed it. Good beats and great voice.

Great voice and songs. I also loved the 80s synth-pop ascetics.

More interesting then I thought. Later tracks better

4, great pop album

Listened to on 3/9/22 4/5 Favorite song: 5 dollars, the walker, comme si This album was the best change of pace! I loved how Christine integrated French and English into her lyrics. It was fun, edgy and all in all great to listen to

Quite enjoyed this.

diversity win! A butch lesbian made slightly generic but solid sounding pop record! 7/10

8/10. Definitely better in French. Started out sounding like French Taylor Swift, but had some more diverse sounds to it later on.

Decently entertaining French pop. 7/10

way too long

Rather an energetic album! Quite fond of the rhythm.

I used to have a playlist with cool French pop on it and one day "Girlfriend" mysteriously changed to the French version which soured things somewhat. For me, that's the standout track on the album (either version) but the rest of the album is good. I feel like it might need a few more listens to fully appreciate it but tracks like "What's-her-face" have a searing emotion that deserves further listening.

Pretty great tbh, someone said Tegan and Sara are probably fans and i definitely see it. Same vibes. 4

Every song here was a hit. Sometimes I preferred the French versions, sometimes I preferred the English versions. But I could put this on repeat and not tire of it. Sounds super fresh.

Enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. Had some great 80s vibes and such and variety of instruments throughout. Had a retro feel but sounds very modern. Songs get a little weaker later on In the album. Fav track is 'Doesn't Matter'

very french, this guy has listnd to a lot of MJ

Very good synth pop. Enjoyed the bi lingual bits, even though my french is not up to scratch!

Another excellent relisten. I appreciate that it is aggressively bilingual.

Great production and music to back up the surpurb vocals. It was a pretty interesting experience to listen to both the English and French versions of Chris. Listening to the English one first was like a 3/5 as only a few songs were great to me (Girlfriend, Doesn't matter). But after a few hours break and then listening to the French one, it's definitely a 4.5/5. The songs just breathe a bit better and the vocals sound more natural. It also made songs like Goya Soda and The Stranger which were ok in English make more sense. Maybe it was also just better on the second listen. Recommend highly though regardless.

This band reminds me a bit of Tegan and Sarah but also I think they are french? Never heard of them before this but this is one of the more current releases we have heard. I found Goya Soda to be very interesting in terms of content. It was as if they were trying to sing about anything they could.

An album from 2018, looks like maybe we're going outside of the 1001 albums book since it only went to 2010, not that that's a bad thing. Wasn't sure what to expect, turned out to be a French pop album with some 80s influences. Kind of reminded me of Robin in a way, but also more focused on religion and LGBTQ+ topics. Found it to be pretty good musically, I don't go out of my way to listen to pop but you sort of have to if you ever go in public so it was nice to hear something different and it was very well performed.

guter Pop, pseudo 80er. Die französischen Versionen sind besser. Gegen Ende wirds etwas schwacher.

Great pop album. Catchy motives and interesting textures all around. Super original sound, very own to CatQ.

Excellent pop music. The first half is very Michael Jackson influenced, especially his earlier work. The second half is a bit slower and contemplative sounding. Overall, this album is very heavy on 80s pop motifs with a bit of contemporary hip hop influence thrown in (though non-obtrusively). The lyrics are deliberately dense which I really like as it allows the music to create a mood around a song to get an emotional meaning across that's not as dependent on the musical content. This is not my usual genre but I found it well executed and enjoyable.

fun bilingual dreamy pop-esque album with all the best tracks weighted in the 1st half. Somehow reminds me of shopping at Old Navy.

Estava pessimista pela capa. Ate gostei. Fez me lembrar Caroline Polachek

Not in my edition of the book! 2018. 3 stars. Quality French electro pop. She's got a gorgeous voice, and there are some decent tunes here - it's just let down by suspect lyrics. Not sure it is essential listening though.

Pretty good, just not quiiiite my jam

Great voice just not my choice of songs.

Some good songs that even went onto mynplaylisr, but in the end the album didn't really stand out to me.

Tis prima

It’s a fun synth pop album. Can’t complain.

Some decent jams and I had fun with some of the tracks but also pretty run of the mill.

This is decent pop but it didn't blow me away or anything.

I saw someone mention that this is way too 80s or something and that’s just nonsense. Just because there’s some crappy VSTs of old synths here and there doesn’t make it 80s yet. More than anything this sounds like that certain type of quiet and minimalistic pop with whispered vocals that was vastly popular in 2010s, which I've never been much of a fan of. Regardless, it wasn’t too bad. I listened to the French version, of course, because I always prefer, if not the non-English version, at least the version with the singer's native language. And that worked quite nicely here. Pretty for the type of music it is. Won't listen to it again, but I'll give it a good three stars; one extra for not being (solely) in English.

A good voice, but I am not a big fan of the music. 3 stars or C+.

thought i was gonna like this one more than i actually do. i don’t hate it or anything, but nothing really stood out about it. sort of felt like i was supposed to be impressed simply because she was singing in different languages

This was a journey. And it began on the wrongest of foots. A double album? Really?? Its a damn hour& 1/2 to get thru this thing ONCE. And then the needle dropped, and the stock went in freefall. As a wise man once said: "No." But it kept playing & before long there was a tune that caught my attention. &then another one & another & there'd be a stinker here & there, but this thing came back & snatched a 3 from the jaws of a 1. Its definitely outside the range of my natural habitat, but it's absolutely going into the giant mix

I enjoyed this. It's a perfectly acceptable pop album.

Nice pop

New to me - enjoyed a lot, reminded me of CHVRCHES which is no bad thing.

Quite a few catchy tunes here. I was a little worried when I saw the genre was pop and they did the album in different languages, but I was pleasantly surprised. 2.5 rounding up.

Not my cup of tea, but its decent for what it is! Mostly unrelated, but the album cover pisses me off SO MUCH. Best Song: Doesn't Matter Rating: 5.0/10 Stars: 3

Ça sonne mieux en français. Definite Bjork vibes, even though Bjork is, famously, not French. A generous trois étoiles.

Pleasant but not memorable, Production gets a shout for it's smoothness - but aside from that I don't see myself rushing back.

In looking at the reviews, I kind of understand why this is below three stars. That said, I actually thought this album was maybe a bit better than that. The fact that there is a French and an English version of the album it’s pretty unique, even if I didn’t have time to listen to the French version. Meanwhile, focusing solely on the English disc, to me this holds up. It’s not amazing, but there are some songs on here that are pretty good, Doesn’t Matter and The Walker in particular. There’s elements of some of that 90s electronic music in here, mixed in with a bit of Katy Perry. All in all, a decent listen. 3 stars

I only listened to the French part. Pleasant pop music.

Very enjoyable

After an intense 24 hour listen, I gotta say this album has quite a bit of variety. I like that it switches between French and English (not a new concept but for this it’s quite refreshing). 3/5

It was fine. If they made the list now it wouldn’t be on it

An ethereal pop album- reminded me a lot of other 2010s singers like Borns. Interesting in some parts but overall just average.

This is pretty good. I will let my far more qualified friend Alan speak knowledgeably on it.

An album with its writing and sound very much in the world of Jam and Lewis and Michael Jackson's classic period. I think it runs out of stream come the end but it opens with much promise and his/her voice has a decent range. I think the 'Girlfriend' track dwarfs the record and is one of my favourite tracks of this century. It's a shame it it not full matched by any others, but it was a perfectly fine listen.

It’s modern pop. It’s catchy, it’s repetitive, and it’s harmless.

I had a headache deciding how to review this album, due to it containing two different versions, the English and the French one. On top of changing the language, each version also has additional songs, with the English one having "Feel so good" and the french one having "Bruce est dans le brouillard" and "Le G". Ultimately, I decided to only focus on the french version with the addition of "Feel so good". The reason why is decided to choose this side is due to it feeling more natural, thanks to the singer singing in her mother tongue instead of the very accented English that comes across as a bit artificial. This along could be considered a reason to lower the score. However, I see this project as a "choose your own adventure", and by listening to only half of it is enough to get the full experience, so I ended up not considering it as something bad. With that being said, this album is just decent synth pop revival. Its strongest aspects are the clear production combined with its intimacy and sensible tone that come from the lyrics and the singer sweet and serious voice. But other than that, the album its a bit tame. Seeing as a pop album, there is nothing really catchy nor memorable, and the sentimentalism I don't think is that impactful, maybe beautiful, but not that remarkable, at least for me. In conclusion, it is a decent synth pop album. I just don't think it is very interesting.

Cool vibes in a number of songs (Machin-chose my top song; got 'Doesnt Matter' stuck in my head). Nice production, good voice. Considered a 4 as I do think I'll come back to it, but didn't feel right musically giving it 4.

Liked it more than I thought I would

Imagine a liberal arts school's acapella group made an album but they had to use instruments. That's what this album sounds like. 3/5 disclaimer i didnt listen to the second half because i assume its just the same thing but in french.

Pretty good, but for the really recent albums my expectations are always very high. There's so much great music coming out and this list rarely delivers with the newer picks. This is solid, but there's a lot I'd put on the list over it

Chill but not something I would want to listen to again

It's fine and enjoyable at times. 2.8.

This album is really cute. It's not mind-blowing but it's cute and relatively upbeat and easy to listen to. I wouldn't turn it off but I wouldn't rush to listen to it again.

Purely mid, and definitely not important enough to listen to before you die.

Fun and poppy, she’s got a great voice

Mostly harmless.

it's fine. poppy, catchy enough. good production, vocals. i do wonder about its inclusion in the list tho (and this is not a comment only about this album, it's just the most recently released album i've received from this list). clearly with older albums, most were liked when they came out and have stood the test of time as people still like them to this day. with something as recent as this, i wonder why it was included and who was pushing for its inclusion. it's not particularly groundbreaking or anything. there were some solid 2018 releases that i think will stand the time more: sons of kemet (never heard an album like this before), father john misty, boygenius (similar lgbtq+ appeal, themes, musicians) for example. ymmv, this might boil down to personal preference as i am not typically a poptimist.

I like my synthpop best when it's a lil Quirked Up(tm), and this album definitely achieves that! Delightfully strange synthpop in a style straight out of the 80s, but with some undeniable modern influences.

Pretty cool! Also cool that they made French and English versions, and that both were pretty good. Not something I’d listen to again, but I was vibing.

Loved the disco-funk elements on this! I was personally a fan of that recent period of 80s synthpop revival, and it seems like Christine and the Queens were right at the start of it with this album. Had I discovered them at the same period as I was listening heavily to L'Impératrice and modern The Weeknd, this could have been an insta-5. As fun as it is to have some French music on the list though, I just don't think anything stands out as an essential listen. Standouts: Damn, dis-moi • Doesn't matter (voleur de soleil) • Goya ! Soda ! • Le G

There were points where I thought this album was almost getting great, but then we went back to the boring downtempo stuff again.

Bro? Are you... mewing? Pretty good. Not really my style. But pretty good for what it is.

2 good songs, kinda repetitive

Pop music from France with a frosting of good LGBTQ plus messaging. Good... if you enjoy pop music. Reminds me a lot of music by Michael and Janet Jackson and of similar quality. Lacks edge, most sharp corners have been rounded off. Maybe the creators thought that the fact that this is very LGBTQ plus positive was enough edge, I could have used some more. It feels processed and I suspect Autotune was in use, which makes everything feel flat to me.

I don’t know how else to describe this, but I know in my heart of hearts that if Bjork was French, she would make this exact album.

production is very good, writing is pretty nothing, i can't tell what basically any of the lyrics are. pop album bingo achieved, i spose.

Listened to this twice, or maybe four times, depending how you count the French/English cuts. I think I prefer the French versions, as the delivery in the English ones is sometimes a bit stilted. Synthpop doesn't really do it for me, generally speaking, and this isn't an exception. I really like Damn, dis-moi and especially Doesn't matter, which is transcendent. Reminds me of Perfume Genius's On the Floor; self-loathing giving way to catharsis. Much of the rest just doesn't differentiate for me, unfortunately.

I definitely grooved to this and admire the bilingual release. Would probably put on again. Maybe a 3.5?

Honestly a solid and delightful pop album. This was released on my actual 35th birthday, so I'm old enough to remember the music some on here are comparing it to and this is honestly nothing like the glossy synth pop of the 80s. There might be some familiar-ish sounds, but hardly.

Passable French pop

Great background music

Like Kate Bush meets Michael Jackson but not as interesting as either. Highlights were Damn, Feel.So Good (quite Jacko) and What's-her-Face (which is very Kate Bush). Low light was 5 Dollars, the only irritating song on the album. Also a rare album that is better in the second half. Although the penultimate song is a bit boring and the last song is a bit of a sharp ending. Went from a low to a medium 3.

i listened to just the french version instead of both the english and the french, some cool pop stuff here but was kind of just too conventional for me to rate any higher

I think I only knew of his collaboration with Charli XCX before this, but I like this pretty well! Sounds nice. Nothing too standout in the realm of late 2010s synthpop BUT that's fine .

Surprisingly better than what I expected! I love the blend of languages and it's pretty good pop! 3.5/5

I didn't dislike this, but it felt like it would never end.

This album really hits its groove with ‘5 dollars’ and ‘Goya Soda’, but overall it feels more a piece of performance art than a great album.

Extremely boring review time: I have no strong feelings either way about this album. It was perfectly pleasant and I enjoyed listening to it while it was happening, but I can't see me ever returning to it. 3/5

First time listen Interesting choice to have a double LP with an English and French version. I think I preferred the French versions just a bit more, but as a back to back experience it was obviously a bit of a drag, and likely wasn't even meant to be listened to front to back anyway Regardless, it's good, catchy synth pop that sounds a bit samey. Favorite tracks: Damn (What must a woman do), Doesn't Matter, Goya Soda Least favorite: The Walker 3/5

Of all things I could've expected from this record, a throwback wasn't one of 'em. But Chris's cadences are Michael Jackson's, his image is Prince's, & the production he sports is like DeBarge + Alphaville. He does posses a contemporary comp, which would be Dev Hynes, but 2018 is not the year I'd associate w/ an album like this one. It's not that he's willfully nostalgic; he just honestly boasts an aesthetic that's not of the now. The music itself is a fluent brand of pop music, sexy but not sexualized, fantasy-bound tho tethered to simpler realities, w/ some poetic moments as well: 'I chose to talk w/ violent hits, blossoms again'; 'Run if you stole a shard of sunlight.' I can't say I'm in love w/ the second half, but overall, the eighties are back!

Not exactly my taste, but not bad. Has 2 versions. Once in French and English.

fun fun fun, but also repetitive

Oh wow, Track 1, Comme Si, has a very 80’s pop sound to it. It actually starts out very similar to Michael Jackson's Don't Stop Til You Get Enough. It just hit me this morning. I’ve heard music by Christine and the Queens before, but I couldn’t remember if it was pop or maybe glam rock. But this is pure 1985, but with better production. A lot of the 80s music to me didn’t sound as full as music does today. It’s almost like the bass was turned down, or everything was turned down. I don’t necessarily want the loudness turned up, but I need a fuller sound. Track 2, Girlfriend, is a banger. It’s 80s sounding, full of synth and computer drums, or whatever you’d call them. It does have a Nile Rodgers-type guitar coming in and out. Such a good groove. This song was the first single off the album. I do feel like I’ve heard this before. Track 3 is The walker and it’s giving me The Weekend vibes. Not the weekend, but The Weekend. How is Christine and the Queens not huge? This is better than anything on the radio now. At least I think so. I don’t listen to the radio and haven’t for like the last 25 years. This album came out in 2018, but I don't remember a big summer song from Chris, though I may have just missed it. Track 4 is Doesn’t Matter and it just keeps the pop coming. I was worried I might get bored as the album goes on, but each song introduces more than just a blazing pop song. There’s always a groove I wasn’t expecting. This song has some sort of robot playing a digital car horn or something. Just so good. Track 6, Goya Soda, just hits you in the face with the fat keyboard sound that takes me back to age 10. I’m beginning to wonder if I’m truly loving this music or if it’s all nostalgia. It really is taking me back to the 80’s synth pop that dominated the radio. A sound I didn’t even really love, but it was on, and whatever is on will shape your little 10-year-old brain. This song has a good groove, and Christine has a great voice. Track 7, Damn (what must a woman do), is, as the kids say, FIRE! It has a weird herky jerky groove, and the vocals are layered so well. This album is a jam. I’m finding myself listening and grooving more than wanting to write. That’s a good thing. I think the last half of the album may be better than the first. There are some fun noises and sounds throughout the whole album. I was not expecting to really love this album. I didn’t think I’d hate it, but it really got me fired up. After consulting with my good friend, Wkipedia, I find that according to Chris, the influences for this album was Cameo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Michael Jackson’s Dangerous, and Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope. I think Chris did a great job of taking those influences and producing music that sounds new and fresh. I think this might be a must-listen album, especially for those who loved 80’s pop music. I can’t wait to hear this again. In fact, the version of the album I’m listening to also has the songs in French, as Chris is French. I’m going to listen to it too. Au revoir!

Like it 3/5

its not that is bad, its just not good...a safe album, palatable, but ultimately flat, uninteresting, and generic. I can appreciate the topics uncovered in this album.

This is perhaps too harsh, but it’s weirdly soulless-feeling. It also sounds dated despite being pretty recent - the particular style isn’t something that needed to be brought back, I think. Honestly, I probably would’ve been less forgiving if not for the French. Still, it wasn’t really annoying or unpleasant. Favorites: The walker, L’étranger (voleur d’eau)

Pretty decent pop music, that I swear I've heard music very similar sounding to this, but can't place it at all. Maybe Imogen Heap? Dua Lipa? Not really sure, and pretty sure those aren't the ones I'm thinking of, but this album sounds very similar to a song I've heard before. But yeah, it's fine, not blowing my socks off though.

⭐⭐⭐+ Elektronisk pop. Bäst är Comme si, The walker, 5 dollars och Make some sense.

I listened to the French version of 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴, which presents a sleek and well-produced take on modern electropop. The album is consistent in tone, built around clean synths, tight rhythms, and a clear artistic vision. Everything is executed with confidence, but it doesn’t quite leave a lasting impression on me. It’s a solid record with a strong sense of style, yet it never fully moves beyond that into something more distinctive.

i listened to the french version because i felt like it'd be the more authentic version. i also don't speak french. funky and gay (im assuming). i like it but i do think it drags on a bit too long for my liking. its not very memorable

3 1/2. I liked disc 2 where she sings in French much better than disc 1.

The drum beat carries most of the music, its a bit dull if your expecting a seamless melody

Honestly, I thought there was no way I was going to like this… and while maybe I didn’t think it was top tier it was still impressive that they released the songs in French and in English. Her voice was enjoyable in both. Some of the beats were catchy and unique. Granted it is pop. I would lean more to a 3.5.

Melodically music was fine but not my cup of tea

Unexpectedly good. 15 seconds into the first song I was hoping it wouldn't be painful. My opinion changed, I'd listen to this again, probably the French half only.

Carried by Chris' amazing voice

Love their voice

Good beats the lyrics are so so. The French version makes them sound cool and foreign though

I just didn’t have time to listen to the whole album, but to my surprise l enjoyed what I heard. It’s a three star record for me.

I was liking the sound so I went and found the English version so I could understand the lyrics. Fun album!

Clean, groovy electropop that flows very nicely from one track to the next. But wait… now it’s repeating… and now it’s fully in French. It’s getting a bit boring now, and there is still 40 minutes to go… Nothing wrong with it all, and some strong pro-LGBTQ+ representation which I am all for. But way too long, and the songs get a bit repetitive. 6/10

Favourite Track: Goya Soda

i'm no stranger to this artist, i've heard a couple of his releases from around 2020 onward. spotify played the english version before the french (and i'm not about to play both versions all the way through tonight), so i'm rating based on the english version only Comme si - 4/5 Girlfriend - 3/5 The Walker - 4/5 Doesn't Matter - 3/5 5 Dollars - 3/5 Goya Soda - 3/5 Damn (What Must a Woman Do) - 3/5 What's-Her-Face - 2/5 Feel So Good - 4/5 Make Some Sense - 3/5 The Stranger - 4/5 Average score: 3.3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ personally, i found this kinda underwhelming compared to the later albums i've heard from this project in the past. nevertheless, it's decent pop i guess

Had some good high points, but also some generic stuff.

Pretty good.

Cute little pop album in English and French! Hadn't heard of this act before but it's decent. Some nice melodies and rhythms. The French versions of the songs are a nice touch.

Loved the album and it's energy, good and flowy, I still have to listen to the album in French, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I have always liked Christine and the Queens... poppy but with "added value", probably because of Chris' stage presence and unapologetic queerness. As an artist and role model I really like them. And they have some attractive songs. However I was left a bit disappointed by this album. In the end, I find most songs a bit banal, musically. Not bad as pop songs and it's nice to see a French artist on the list. But ultimately it's a 3 for me. A 3 I'll happily listen to, but I wanted to love this more than I do.

I got this album when it was released because I really liked the song "Girlfriend" and it was popular at the time. But I didn't really listen to any of the other tracks. Which I now know is a shame. This is an upbeat sparkly album with really enjoyable 80s squishy synth, a mellow drum and guitar backbone and a surprising use of harpsichord. I loved the French language versions of the songs. I have always enjoyed listening to songs with lyrics in a language other than English (as a person that can only speak English and then only barely). A motivating and enjoyable album to help you put a spring in your step. (3.125)

I can feel the French contempt when she sings Damn (what must a woman do). Great jam! Her voice is so pure. Very enjoyable.

Usually this flavour of music is more miss than hit for me, but I liked this one quite a bit. Good composition, fun songs. My only real grievance is that a lot of the charm of the 80s pop this is apeing comes from the fact that it feels like a feat of engineering. Advanced synths, but still bound by traditional studio limitations. This album came out in 2018, and sounds like what it is: a feat of being on the computer. It is what it is.

3.5 Spotify leading with the English version of this album is doing it a huuuuge disservice. I’m glad I stuck around to listen to the French version. The singer is clearly so much more comfortable singing in French, the song flow betters the melodies are smoother. It’s a French album. Like, it’s cool that that they recorded a version with English lyrics but forget that one, listen to the French version. It’s the true version. Added a full star for me, easily.

Good contemporary pop album, some great deep cuts, love DamFunks contributions. Not memorable enough, but fun all the way through

I like a fair bit of electro pop acts like CHRVCHES or La Roux. I had never heard this and generally liked it. I felt this fell off the table after the first half or it might have gotten 4 stars from me.

I disliked the first few tracks; then it grew on me. I didn't finish but will probably return to it at some point.

I'm not totally sold on this belonging on the list. Seems like it was something added in one of the updates but should have been given a few extra years to see if the longevity is actually there. With that being said, I still enjoyed this. It's a good pop album, just not sure I needed to hear this before I die.

Average

Poppy new wave sound

Finally know who sang that "Girlfriend" song that was everywhere when we were in the U.K. Didn't like it then, don't really like it now (mostly because it was played into the ground). It's fine, it's catchy, the lyrics at times are solid and interesting and then at others just super shallow. Vocals are good though.

I listened to the English and French versions of this album which made it a little rough to sit through but the album it self is fine. I'm 90% certain that this is something I would have never bothered with if it wasn't on this list. Favorite track: Feel so good

Quite a fun album.. For me feels quite fresh 3/5

I didn't know this singer. Good songs accompanied by nice videos. Overall a good album.

This album definitely grew on me, but I feel like there’s something missing in the instrumental, at least for the English version. The vocals are so much better in French.

Danceable modern pop record seemingly inspired by early 90s new jack swing.

Blaaand. Boooring. Idk what Dimery was doing in 2018 because there are so many better albums than this. Disappointed.

This was fun at some parts but way too long for me. Upper neutral.

I'm not a pop guy, but I would consider this good pop. While it doesn't resonate with me, it is a decent piece of work.

It's fun and exciting

Big dreamy 80s inspired pop mixing Roxette with a hint of Prince and Cocteau Twins. Feels like it could have been more experimental- with little flashes of harmonic brilliance here and there, but strong album nonetheless. I mainly listened to the French version and the extra track (Le G) was a favourite. High 3.

Very nice. Bat for Jackson.

This was surprisingly good. Gave me vibes of Lorde who I’m a big fan of and there felt like even a little bit of modern Taylor Swift in there too. My only real gripe with this is that it’s an 1h32m long and it’s just not good enough to warrant that. Double albums are rarely good enough to justify their length. Hell, I’m a massive Beatles fan and even I struggle with their double album (The White Album). So it would’ve got a higher rating if it was just half the length.

Okay. Nice experimenting. Liked that there is a French version of everything.

Ahhhhh the French, known for their pop suedo gay Justin Bieber vogue music. Not my cup of tea but there is a ton of production value that went into this. Also really neat that its in English and French. I opted out of listening to the same album in French but I still think its a cool idea that it was released with that available. 6/10

This rating is for the French version. The first couple songs honestly bang, but the album isn’t really anything special from there. Chris has a wonderful voice, and everything sounds super clean and funky, but it just doesn’t really do much for me.
