I don’t know if recent bias is the right word to use here, but I’m kind of shocked that of all the albums in 2018 and onward, this made the list. It just feels very plain. I’m not sure what I was supposed to take away from it, and sure, there are a few decent pop tracks, but you can’t have an hour + long record filled mostly with, well, filler.

Listening to the 23 track bilingual version was interesting but too long. Fun bouncy pop - very retro for 2018 but that’s fine.

Tough one to rate. It gets the 4 because, objectively (as much as that's possible), this was solid. I thought the execution and production was tight and never too much or too little. As far as my personal enjoyment, this was right down the middle. It was fine. Good even. But this is the kind of breezy pop that doesn't quite make an impression on me. Wouldn't turn the channel, but I wouldn't seek it out.

I don't know if it's because of the cover, but I was not expecting to like this. However, I thought it was pretty chill and vibey. I dug the '80s-throwback aesthetic, even though that's not my usual wheelhouse. None of the songs really stood out for me, but I enjoyed the ride. I preferred the French version.

My kind of vibe! Some pop comes across as shallow. And I'm ok with that. But Christine and the Queens has depth in his pop sound. Maybe I'm a sucker for the euro vibe and the gender fluidity but I love the electronic sounds and the heavy accent.

Not my type of thing at all, but the production is definitely really good.

One of those albums that sounds intriguing in the description but didn't live up to the hype. The sound is overly polished and the tunes are good but not great. I wanted to like this more than I did. Perhaps if my French was better I would appreciate the lyrics a bit more, but the backing was generic modern pop / R&B, to these ears.

Meh, just because a person is consequential with their identity an contributes to the overall socio-culturel debate that rightfully so discusses freedom, participation, power and bias and is demanding, music does not become intrinsically better or worse by that. So this is it: a bold person but a boring work of music, despite the partially personal and beyond average lyrics. Average pop, average production, average delivery. Nothing bad per se, but surely nothing for the list.

Weird how something with so few new ideas would suck this hard. Like, if you're going to be derivative of a genre from 40 years ago, at least steal the good parts. This one won't stay on the list for long.

I really like 80s music, but not sure if I need more of it created in 2018. That said, it is well executed and cleanly produced. The 1001 Albums Generator is doing exactly what it promised, because there is no way I would have come across modern French pop music on my own. I would not put it in rotation, but not mad that I listened to it. 2.5⭐️ (rounded up to 3 for rating)

Pre-listening thoughts: don’t wanna get my hopes too high but POP! 2018! Eek! Modern music and it’s POP!!! There is not enough pop on this list I am so happy I finally got a queer pop album YIPEE!!! Also let me just say the user reviews are generally negative which to me is a good sign 😭 they hate pop but…! Post/during listening thoughts: oh this is for ME. I am such a pop girly it’s not even funny. The melodies, production, and vocals are just all so punchy and exciting. It’s reallyyyy nice to have something modern on here. This is also something I don’t think I would’ve listened to on my own like I had no clue who Christine and the Queens was before this moment. Sort of like French Marina and the Diamonds or Tegan and Sara or HAIM… the list goes on, and that is why this is right up my alley. I can feel my soul healing over from the 70s rock excess 10/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: me personally yes. Like I’ve become a fan. I think more people should open themselves up to pop music as well and this is a great album to do so with Fav tracks: literally all of them. Not one skip on this album. Also, why is there an album from 2018 already? Has the list been revised or something? I thought it was a 2016 version. Whatever. Looking forward to #day13.

Not my cup of tea

I think something I like about euro pop is the trance and house influence. Reminiscent of Bjork at points, this album was a super pleasant surprise. I think the double album holds it back, unfortunately. Judging the album as a whole, having a second disc that is basically the same as the first is definitely a hindrance. Being the pretentious ass I am, I prefer the French side.

First off, I just want to say that it's pretty cool that this album has both an English version and a French version. I only listened to the French version as it seems to be the version most people consider to be better, but it's cool that both options are there. Anyways, this album's good. Like a lot of the albums I've gotten recently, it's not really my thing personally, but I respect this album quite a bit. Is it the most essential album of 2018 that they could've put on the list? No, but it's not the worst pick they could've made. At least it represents a country and language that don't already have a crap ton of albums on the least. The sound is pretty good. The production has a good blend of classic synth-pop and modern pop production. The singing is pretty decent too. I translated the lyrics from French to English and they're pretty unique. Overall, this is a pretty decent album that I can see the appeal of. However, I don't really feel like going back to hear what the English version is like any time soon. High 3/5.

Something more modern, and not from the UK or US? Nice to see for variety. I liked the singer's voice, I liked the bass-lines, I thought the songs had just enough variation to keep me interested. Doesn't Matter stuck with me longest. Make Some Sense was the only song that I wanted to skip, but it was short.

I didn't know we needed any more of this pop crap. I found the music completely boring. Even as background droning it was hardly bearable. I stopped after two tracks. 1/5

i don't understand it, but it's a bop

Kind of fun they did a French and English version. This would come off heavy handed if this album weren't a really fun, well produced, electro-pop effort. I think some of the criticism that it's a bit "self-involved" fall flat to me, as that works when it's thoughtful and well-written. Furthermore this is some catchy stuff! If this were just "wallowing in self-pity" I'd be done with it pretty quick, but in this event I'm looking forward to repeat listens.

A certified bop!

This album is not for me and I thought it was very middle of the road. Pros: the production was very good, and it had some good synth tones. Cons: I don't like their voice, and the songs were a little generic. I'm subtracting a point because the last couple songs were a little cringe and they gave me a head ache (I may have been hung over)

This is not good and I question its place on this list. It is listenable, but sounds derivative of others’ works.

Let’s start by saying that “Chris” was mediocre to average at best. While it had one or two standout tracks, the majority of the album hovered around a two or three out of five. The decision to make this a double-disc album was a mistake, as it felt overly long and lacked any sense of adventure or journey. It maintained the same uniform, monotone vibe from beginning to end, never building up to anything substantial. Although it kept a consistent groove, it quickly became monotonous and boring, even for a Synthpop fan like myself. What baffles me even more is how this album made it onto the “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die” list. It makes me wonder what timeless, artful classic was sacrificed to make room for this one. It’s a decision that leaves me scratching my head.

80's pop influenced. Couldn't go past 5 dollars song.

Nonsense, but a good way round any writer's block issues - just write two sets of words for each song and throw them out with zero quality control. This was picked out the day the Paris Olympics opened, maybe by coincidence, maybe not, but it made for a very French day in my house.

A good album, though a lot of the songs sounded similar. I mostly used for background music, though I did like Feels So Good and Goya Soda in particular.

My guilty pleasure is gay pop

Sometimes this list makes me question how. But occasionally it will make me wonder why. Sometimes I really have to think where the author of the book could have found some of these albums considering how little seems to be known about them. But sometimes I’m just at a loss for what he could have been thinking to justify the inclusions of these albums. I’m not going to claim to be an expert in synthpop and contemporary R&B music. But I know my fair share. And I’m aware of which ones are worth talking about. The omission of artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, and albums like The Velvet Rope or Power, Corruption & Lies continues to confuse me. These feel like shoo-in picks that fully belong here. And this is an issue in other genres too. Still haven’t forgiven him for leaving out Discovery and Animals. Instead, we are presented with records like this. I don’t want to completely lowball Christine here, and claim that he is some sort of hack, or a completely worthless artist. But I’ve never heard of him or his music. Looking at his most popular songs, he’s done some work with Charli XCX in the past. And I feel that people who take an interest in her, or pop artists adjacent to her will get a kick out of this. I’ll mention the production, which is by far the best part of this album. I found many of the techniques and sounds I was hearing being used to be genuinely impressive at times. But this seems to be the way that this kind of pop has evolved since the 2000s, and especially in the 2010s. I can recognize his effort to merge those ideas with ones of the past, and bring the pop feeling of the 80s into the modern era. The first track even led me to believe I was working with something really interesting here. But aside from a few highlights here and there, this doesn’t really do much for me. At the end of the day, this is a pop album I can do without, when there are so many others that really excel in their spaces. Rating: 5/10

I listened to the French version and checked out the 2 tracks I didn't mind on the English version. 5 dols and L'Étranger (Voleur d'eau) were alright, tho nothing really surprised me. Not sure this really needs to be here. Sounds like a lot of other stuff and doesn't really bring something new.

well. this album cover is HOT. the music, on the other hand.... it does succeed in making a certain vibe, which is nice enough, but for me the spacious mixing and light, electronic sound aren't my taste when I had hoped for more to chew on when I was given this album. I will say that the lyrics are much more interesting. I most like the songs that take the electronic sound into something darker like What Must a Woman Do. In the end, I kinda prefer the French version!

First time listening to Christine and the Queens, and I am now a fan.

As the 2nd record in a row I've listened to which is not entirely in English (albeit a much different style), I'm stoked. Even with a good portion of this album being in French, the similarities to other artists like Sia with electronic elements thrown in make this a catchy record in any language. Like I said with the Baaba Maal record, even when I wasn't able to understand the lyrics, the music and vibe of the songs is universal. Notable Tracks: - Comme si - The walker - Doesn't matter - Goya Soda - Feel so good - The stranger - Comme si on s'aimait 6/10

Awesome contemporary french new wave . I enjoyed this quite a bit. The second half is all English versions of the first half. Last song (The stranger) has Shifting Sand Land energy.

i didnt like it. i never liked this kind of 80s throwback kind of pop in the first place. this one in particular was very boring, and was a drag to listen through. i listened to the english one, and really did not feel the need to relisten to this again in french. i love synthpop, but this was just so mid. its tolerable for a listen, but just so mind numbing. sorry. 2 personal favs: doesnt matter

This was fun if only for how modern it sounded. It was crystal clear and so clean sounding which was awesome. The album was too long, but the best tracks were a lot of fun. Good Melodies and nice disco-y guitar. Reminds me a lot of Haim.

This was an interesting listen. First, it was WAY too long, given the content (it was listening to the same album twice, essentially). I certainly prefer the second half of the album that is mostly in French. This is not the first case of releasing two versions of the same album in different languages, so I'm not sure why this is here. Side A: 3/5. Side B: 3.4/5. 3.2/5 -> 3/5.

French pop. I didn’t expect to like this but I really did! It was super catchy and the songs had a good way of keeping you guessing. One song might have a killer bass line and another with an interesting keyboard. Even though it was pop, it felt complex, but still easy to listen to.

Boy, that went on forever. It has its moments but it's far too long and rarely very interesting.

"I am done with belonging." An artist I'd heard of often but had never listened to. After the first few songs, I was strapped in. It's a generous, vulnerable, and tough-as-nails serving of French pop; funk-flavored and well-written, confident, and full of momentum. Highlights: Comme si, The walker, 5 dollars, What's-her-face, Feel so good, Make some sense

The French are just so good at music, aren't they? This is totally pleasant 80s-style pop that never stumbles into pastiche. Maybe a little too light in places, but it just sounds so damn nice.

Day 28 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. It’s pretty interesting how this album jumps from this seductive tone to a pretty strong and powerful tone. This album really stands out with the lyrics. Truly I don’t think there is a single song that is lacking lyrically. The walker talking about domestic violence and 5 dollars talking about buying love. It’s a pretty good and a great listen with sharp lyrics.

Sounds like every other electro-pop Robyn-lite hotel lobby-friendly record released in the 2010s.

Never heard of this band. What a weird flow and vocalisation. I like the 80's pop vibes on some of the tracks, but the singing is throwing me off.

Excellent electro-funk pop record. I wore this one out pretty quickly when it came out and then I kind of forgot about it mainly because it was released around the same time as Robyn’s classic, Honey and for me this album got overshadowed by it. I’m glad this project got me to revisit it though. With the exception of DāM FunK’s additional production on “Girlfriend” this album was self produced remarkably by Chris. There’s plenty of nostalgia sprinkled in the music but it doesn’t feel like a cheap gimmick and it’s balanced with modern pop elements giving it a timeless sound. Chris’ emotive, theatrical and heartfelt vocal delivery demonstrates precision and control while his lyrics show a poetic defiance against the typical pop parameters. On this listen I picked up on some phrasing similarities with Caroline Polachek and Michael Jackson, something I didn’t notice before. Every nuance in his performance seems meticulously calculated and deliberate, yielding huge pay offs for the listener. Definitely a must listen for anyone who loves pop music like I do. I’m leaning 3.75 on this one.

Decent pop album. Good vocals and music. Not really for me, but I enjoyed the listen. Goya Soda was my favorite.

Simple, clean dance pop. Héloïse Letissier's voice is so clear and effortless; at times vulnerable, at times strong. Plenty of phrases sound like either Michael or Janet Jackson. However, the songwriting is lacking. Aside from the great voice and DIY production, nothing sticks out as particularly innovative nor problematic. Safely middle of the road; easy to like, and just as easy to dismiss. "5 Dollars" has the best pop, "What's-Her-Face" has the confident seduction, and "Make Some Sense" has some of the softest tones of what this album has to offer.

80's inspired electro-funk/r&b...often en français! I imagine this is huge in France. Musically, it fits in with a lot of radio-friendly r&b pop I have heard in the last ten years or so. Admittedly that is not my go-to genre, but I feel this kept my interest a little more than the average act of that type. There was more than a little taken from the MJ playbook here, but there was enough newer mixed in with the retro. Impressive indeed if everything done to create the album was done by just one person. 3.5

This was an ok album for me with some cool 80s electro R and B sounds. The guy's voice is a similar high pitched tone to Michael Jackson or Geddy Lee I think. I'm not sure why it's on this list though. I would have put a Chromeo or a Holy Ghost! album on here instead.of this one, as those other two occupy the same sound space to me but have some better overall songs and albums than this guy.

Another blessing from the album gods to have this generated within my first 50 albums. This is one of my favorite artists of all time; I'm a massive fan. His music has helped me understand myself profoundly. And it's otherworldly, especially his latest release, Paranoia, Angels, True Love, which is an underrated masterpiece. I highly recommend the KEXP performance from 2019, particularly Doesn't Matter, the 4th track on this album. He accesses such raw emotion, it's awe-inspiring. "Run if you stole a shard of sunlight" I was happy to give my vinyl another spin for this one, and Chris is also in my top Spotify artists every year. My favorites are Doesn't matter, The walker, Goya soda, The Stranger, and What's-her-face, but absolutely 0 skips.

Este disco cuenta con dos versiones, una en inglés y la otra en Francés, ambas muy similares (la edición inglesa no cuenta con Bruce est dans le brouillard ni con Le G pero sí con Feel So Good que no está en la francesa). Abre de forma brillante con Comme si. Girlfriend cuenta con el gran Dam-Funk (Hood pass intact) y es uno de los mejores cortes del álbum. 5 Dollars, The walker, todas ellas tienen el mismo patrón, pero eso no es una crítica sino un halago. Goya Soda es pop-syhnt-funk con un final estupendo. Damn (What Must a Woman Do), en la versión francesa Follarse, aporta menos a la causa femenina que Janelle Monae en su disco de ese mismo año. What's-Her-Face y Make Some Sense bajan revoluciones pero no el nivel. Son dos delicadas canciones , muy bien construidas y ejecutadas. Feel so good y The Stranger retornan a parámetros más pop, la última como broche en la edición inglesa. Otros discos mejores de 2018: Double Negative de Low, 7 de Beach House y sobre todo: El mal querer de Rosalía, Dirty Computer de Janelle Monáe y Anna Calvi- Hunter. Like most 2010s/post-publication albums on this list this album feels like a stab in the dark, a wild guess as to what will stand up to the test of time. Don't get me wrong: I liked this album when it came out, and a few songs pop up on my algorithm, but when the same year brought us: Mitski's Be the Cowboy, FJM's self-titled divorce masterpiece, Snail Mail's Lush, SOPHIE's The Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides, Parquet Courts' Wide Awake, Blood Orange's Negro Swan, Robyn's Honey, Low's Double Negative, The Beths' Future Me Hates Me, Earl Sweatshirt's Some Rap Songs, etc etc etc ....and none of those make the list? You're just throwing darts, my man.

Unremarkable and not for me.

In all ways possible, this album was awful. I can’t understand how this is influential and within the first second I was disgruntled with the voice and all that surrounded it. I really didn’t like any aspect of this album, and it went on for far too long.

Glossy-to-a-fault wanna-be 80s modern pop that I'll expect to hear at medium-to-low volume waiting for my mocha frappachino - please hold the whipped cream. Rarely if ever offensive-sounding but entirely unmemorable and vacuous. 4/10 2 stars.

After starting the English version of the album, I switched to the French version. Overall, I think it is pretty good, but it also didn't blow me away or amaze me in any particular way. I can't imagine myself listening to it again, but it definitely wasn't bad, and I could see her making an album I did really get into, but this one just mostly passed without anything really hooking me.

Deze mevrouw maakt lollige commerciële zuurstokmuziek, vraag is wat er zo bijzonder aan is dat het in de lijst moet. Toch niet haar persoonlijke omstandigheden, mag ik aannemen? Ook ik hoorde er een soort Michael Jackson-vibe in, gelukkig krijgen we hierna het echte werk.

Wie is deze Chris nou weer? In elk geval iemand met een liefde voor MJ. Dat steek je met zo'n albumintro niet onder stoelen of banken. Je haalt je wel heel wat op de hals. Want als je Jackson kwaliteit belooft, moet je dat nog waarmaken. Dat doe je niet zomaar. Want Michael was groot. Chris houdt MJ er ook na het eerste nummer in. De muzikale basis van het tweede nummer lijkt wel uit een copy-paste van de basis van een rustig MJ nummer. Nu heeft MJ niet alleen zijn uit duizenden te herkennen muziek, hij had daarboven op een unieke zang. Hij kreeg het voor elkaar om met veel valse lucht en veel kreten prima te klinken. En daar gaat het mis bij Chris. De zang heeft niets bijzonders. Het is veel te soepel. Het wordt daardoor snel een saai geheel. En dan los je de belofte van je MJ-intro simpelweg niet in.

Huismerk Celine Dion, die een soort Michael Jackson en Madonna nadoet. Op zich klinkt het allemaal wel catchy, electropop. Het is ook heel vergeetbaar, want dit doen 100000 bandjes of zangers/zangeressen/hun tegenwoordig. Het zal allemaal wel keurig diversiteitsverantwoord zijn, maar ik zie zo niet in waarom dit 1 vd 1001+ albums zou moeten zijn, die ik ooit in mijn leven gehoord zou moeten hebben. Dus ik luister het 1x en vergeet het daarna weer.

Given my age, and being a Brit, I have a soft spot for funky 80's stuff similar to Janet Jackson. A couple of tracks here tickle that nostalgia bone - Girlfriend in particular is nearly groovy enough to be a song Prince might have given to whoever he was trying to bang that month. Worth a star on its own. Rest of the album is fine, without being amazing. Didn't listen to the french version, why would you?

A very 2010s/Trump-era pop album. A couple heavy hitters in the first half but some parts border on generic. Very well-produced but lacking in personality. Interesting vocal cadence and phrasing (though not always in a good way). Best song: The Walker

Listened to the English half/version. Inoffensive, bland, with little (sonic, lyrical, tempo or tonal) variance throughout. A pop record that never pops, too constipated to dance or cry.

Generally, I am not looking for my pop tunes to harken back to an era of mediocre synths and instantly dated instrumentation, the late 80s, but I feel like this album balances it just enough for it to not be too egregious. However, this was a little bit of a slog to get through, just because the album is other an hour-and-a-half with both parts, and while some songs shine on one or the other more, it can still be tough to get through in one sitting. It leads a lot to the album feeling repetitive, because not only is it pretty similar throughout already, but listening to everything twice with slight delivery tweaks is not worth the time spent. You may say "then don't listen to both parts," but I feel if they spent the time to translate every song here, and put it all in one bundle, then the full thing must have been intended. It is an album that I think would've been enjoyable, but nothing special, but that length hurts it all the more. I could see myself liking something more by Chris, something more upbeat or darker in tone, but for now this is an okay dive into 80s synthpop nostalgia. If you're only going to listen to one side, do the French one, it is delivered better and was surely the intentional route.

I like the positive poppy vibe with some cool slightly vintage sounding electronic beats. Very easy to listen to, though i didn't find too anything that was really catchy (which i would have hoped given the poppy nature). Consistently good.

Respectable tour de force, although doesn't feel special to me. Maybe it would feel more important if I was really deep in the LGBTQ community, but as is, it's kind of a shrug.

When I saw this was a double album, I was like I really hope this is good since I knew nothing of the artist. Wow was I surprised. I came away absolutely loving this album. The vibes were great

This will sound peculiar, but the first few tracks, in English or at least with English parts, I found boring and uninteresting. Standard modern nothingness. I nearly gave up on it and went back to catch up on one I'd missed. But I left it on, and when it got to the obviously French ones it improved immensely. Only a moderate 3 but that is way ahead of where it would have been.

That was a beautiful surprise. Was never into synth-pop in the 80s really, so why I liked this caught me off guard! Great vocals and overall mood. Highlights were ‘Whats-her-face’ and ‘the Walker’

Pleasant enough electro pop from some dodgy looking French bird. It doesn't seem to go anywhere, with no highs or lows in any emotional sense. I prefer La Roux. She did this sort of thing better. 2

Much more subdued and restrained than I expected, but Chris(tine) pulls it off pretty decently. The instrumentals are extremely atmospheric and airy and the vocals on top of nice and chill with some really good hooks. I think where the album falls short is the lyrics which maybe I just need to read into more, but I just didn't catch what some of the songs were about or were just very surface level. 7/10

It's not my kind of music, for sure. But in such a decadent pop music scene, this album sounds like a breath of fresh air. Very well done and well produced. But as I said before: It's not something I'll hear every day.

Listened to the English and French versions, which I'm counting as giving it two spins - did not enjoy. This is very polished, earnest pop. Archetypal. Generic, even. Really not my thing. If I was still exposed to general media and had to listen to these songs a couple of times per week against my will I think I might grow to really hate them, but minimal exposure is just about tolerable. Fave track - eh, "Machin-chose" was more about being atmospheric than poppy, so that one, I suppose...

"Chris..." "Chris..." "Chris???". Huh, what was *that* on the second track of this album? And what was that whole album for anyway? Everything that a mainstream pop record can do *wrong*, this one does it. The instrumentation is bland or hackneyed. The arrangements or outside contributions are grating ("Chris..."). The melodies of the vocal lines are flat and unmemorable. The performance of those vocals is either forced in a quite obnoxious way, or just pointless and tasteless. And the accentuation and scansions for the English versions of those songs are often horrible (and I say this as a French person myself--it really feels like even *I* could better at times, ha ha!). In other words, Letissier is no Laetitia Sadier, he brings zero charm and zero effective intent to his own drawl. And the French versions of those songs are somewhat annoying as well, even if the vocal performance is less ridiculous in them. Worse, *Chris* doesn't even have the dynamics of its eighties models (some of whom are admittedly cheesy, but also have their own quaint/retro charm after all...). Evidence enough that it's a total artistic failure. It's not even "zany" and "over-the-top" in the way that modern "hyperpop" can be. You can bet your boots that most people who love this album have no idea that sort of record has been done "better" a hundred times before. Of course, all of this can't possibly justify the couple of homophobic/transphobic rants found in this reviews section (take your pick). I get and even respect the fact that Letissier addresses hot topics in his lyrics, whether those lyrics are linked to his personal identity quest or not. But it just seems to me those topical lyrics and the "melodies" they're sung with are not fodder for good pop songs anyway. So not even this can redeem this lame album in my eyes. To me the professional reviewers who loved it *all* looked like pretentious fools ("pretentious" because of the heavy-handedness of some of the lyrics--which they chose to ignore in spite of common sense), while also proving the whole world that they had awfully kitschy tastes in music. Which takes the cake, really, as it's the *worst* of both worlds. To put it in a nutshell, rarely an LP has been so overrated by music critics. 0/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential LPs". Which translates to a 3/10 or 4/10 grade for more general purposes. In the realm of mainstream pop, I gave a 1/5 mark to Taylor Swift's *Folklore* and a 2/5 mark to her other album *1989*. I would probably bump those grades one or two notches today, because I sort of mellowed whenever the subject of Swift has been dealt with in the last couple of month. But even with those slight latter-day changes in mind, I gotta maintain some sort of consistency for my own ranking of all these albums (which started more than two years ago). Hence why Christine And The Queens actually deserves *less* than 1/5. Really nice. I found this unexpectedly satisfying to lightly listen to. I could definitely spend more time listening to it. I found online reviews of it surprisingly full of praise, and on reading them, I can understand the depts to explore in this, initially superficially joyous, but subsequently quite intimate and explorative. As a friend says, I want to listen again with my ears on. 3 stars, maybe 4, let's go three for now.

I appreciate that there are newer albums on this list, but I have a hard time weighing them against the much older “actual classics.” There was nothing about this that made it stand out from other 2010s electro-pop sort of stuff, except for the French singing, I guess. Every time I listened to it I ended up with Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” in my head, so I would say if you like “Lights” and want to hear more songs like that, try this.

Out of all the albums from 2018, why this one?

I've been meaning to listen to this record in full since 2019 when I discovered them, because of their feature on Charli XCX's 2019 song "Gone". I heard a few songs from the project before this full listen, so I knew I was going to like it. In full, it definitely matched my expectations. I think this is a perfect pop record.

Had high hopes for this one but it didn't live up to them sadly.

Only listened to the French half, because I'm not listening to the same album twice in a row and because I felt silly today. Bullshit music. Generic radio pop. Zero unique or interesting ideas. A complete waste of time that felt like the audio equivalent of drowning in mud.

NOTE: This is one basically one album, but recorded in both English and French with some track difference. It is streamed as a single work, so unclear on which I Must Hear Before I Die. I'm reviewing them together. A suave and powerful pop record that sounds decent in English, but phenomenal in French. Christine and the Queens belts incredible vocal lines and murmurs softer melodies over a dynamic mix of retro electronic and disco sounds mixed into modern piano and beat production. Songs are fresh and captivating, and the album has a cohesive, punchy flavor that travels well on upbeat and downbeat tracks. I initially approached this work with trepidation, given the hour and a half runtime, but began to comprehend once I was halfway through the French recording. I understand why these two are lumped together on streaming services, given the difference in language and track listing, but the albums are close enough that it's difficult to conceive them as a continuous work. I did enjoy the English recording, but the album(s) really came alive in the French language. Christine and the Queens has a wonderful flow and phrasing style in her native language, and though I don't speak French, I much preferred that version. Still, there's a track on the English version that I liked that isn't on the French version, so I've included it on my stand outs too. Overall, a great listen, just wish I had been more prepared of the meta of the record, a fault not of the artist. Stand out tracks include "Damn, dis-moi", "La marcheuse", "5 dols", "Follarse", "Feel so good", and "Les yeux mouillés".

I guess I don't really dig the modern electro-pop sound. Nothing really stood out to me after the album's completion, plus the translated lyrics (I presume) sounded nonsensical to me.

How did I not know this existed? It loses steam toward the back half of each disc, but still, I really love it.

#155. The name Christine and the Queens implies there's at least three people, but it seems it's only one person [that looks like 1997 Johnny Depp] whose name isn't even Christine. Didn't do much for me. Sounds like a one hit wonder from the 80s, but it was only released a few years ago. The French version does sound a little better than the English version.

Not bad fun album

A few tunes but mainly it sounds like someone has set the loops in Logic Pro and then sung some songs over them. It feels such a lazy boring way to make music. Sometimes it really works when the melody is there but over a whole album it feels creatively thin.

I had high hopes after hearing "Girlfriend." The level of production is squeaky clean the entire way through and sounds like a French Lorde/Tegan and Sara/SOPHIE. I liked that this album featured both English and French versions, which is something I would like to see more often from multi-lingual artists. Impressive, but it doesn't keep it's momentum the whole way through enough to hold my attention the whole time.

A really fun 80s throwback album that’s bristling with bangers, but a bit inconsistent upon relistening. I don’t think it has quite the same impact Chaleur humaine did, and in hindsight it lacks the emotional depth Redcar has now given us with La vita nuova and Paranoïa

I hadn't heard of this artist, so I wiki'd them. Even when singing in English, it sounded French. I liked the tunes but the vocals annoyed me. Sounded female but I read that he's a male. That doesn't matter to me but I wasn't a fan of the vocals and Fast Forwarded the French songs.

I feel like I’ve been in somewhat of a dry spell for albums that actually excited me in some way so I’m really thankful for this one that got me to listen to both the French and English versions of the album because it was just so much fun from start to finish each time. It’s a perfect mix of 80s synth with 2010s pop to make a dance record that was endlessly relistenable for me throughout the entire day. I’d love to listen to this either on a beach or while high. Doesn’t matter and make some sense were my favs.

Synth pop revival from France in the vein of Future Islands or La Roux. Bright and upbeat tones with a darker minor key mood give it that darkly euphoric bittersweet feel. Tastefully indulgent and skirting the line between earnestness and irony, the album is full of all sorts of corny stuff from the Nile Rodgers disco guitars to the cheesy synth/keyboard patches. Falsetto singing: fragile and introspective until it reaches for the big power lines. It's all pleasant enough, but it sounds like music for a Parisian H&M - trendy and fun presentation of glossy surfaces that suggest a darker understory.

I tried giving it a chance but OMG, I couldn't stop remembering that episode of Rick & Morty where some aliens kidnapped or something Morty's father and they played some "human music"... This is just a no for me, so boring and kind of going nowhere. Maybe they tried to make it ethereal but it just sounds dull and soulless. Couldn't even finish it.

Great Album! Christine is a very talented artist and their music is fantastic. Not quite a 5 for me, but a worthwhile listen. Highly recommend their 2020 album La vita nuova.

Good music but the album started to get really repetitive. Stopped listening half way through the album; however, it's an hour and a half long, so I still got in a full 45 minutes.

This album is two things: 1. Unapologetically queer. 2. Unapologetically 80s. Those two factors are what make this album a hidden gem in my eyes. Héloïse Letissier assumes a masculine alter ego in the form of Chris. This album has a version in English and a version in French, which is a rarity in today’s music. Songs like “Girlfriend”, “Doesn’t Matter” and “Make Some Sense” are an introduction to Chris’ beliefs, and make for some pretty solid foundation. This album was unexpected in all of the best ways possible. 4.6/5 Favorite Track: Doesn’t Matter Least Favorite: The stranger

4.0 - This type of 80’s revivalist synth pop is totally my jam and this record is a fine example of that sound. Another welcome discovery from this list that’s worth a revisit.

I always liked Tilted but stopped paying attention to CatQ around this album as I felt the new disco-funk direction wasn’t for me. Apparently I was a bit hasty; although it tails off towards the end I actually enjoyed the first half of ‘Chris’ quite a lot. There are some decent atmospheric pop songs on here, especially ‘The walker’. Not sure what qualifies it as a must-hear album though.

Artsy pop. Sounds a bit like Weekend or MJ at times, but not as good.

It's a pop album. Production is good I guess. 2 stars
