Reviews (page 10 of 13)

Don’t take it too serious and just enjoy. ZZ Top do whatever they do on Tres Hombres - and then “La Grange” comes along and almost makes this worth a spot on the list. It shouldn’t be on here, don’t get me wrong. Enjoy it nevertheless.

I was thinking ZZ Top was harder, so this was a pleasant surprise. I liked Have You Heard the best. If it was on I would listen and enjoy it but probably not search it out.

Really good 3, way better than I thought it would be. Can see this becoming a 4.

Zz top.

This was pretty good, it felt like (and I might be betraying my age here) the predecessor to Kings of Leon. A few goodies on there, I really liked Hot, Blue and Righteous and Waiting for the Bus.

repetitve, but not as boring as u might think

Another that I know the hits but have never dug into the albums. This was great background music, and I picked up on one song from the past, but it was nothing incredible otherwise. Starting to think that will be the case with a lot of these.

A classic

Blues rock that bikers enjoy, then again, I also find it enjoyable, maybe I should buy a bike 🤔

B- Waitin' For The Bus 3 Jesus Just Left Chicago 3 Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers 3 Master Of Sparks 4 Hot, Blue And Righteous 3 Move Me On Down The Line 3 Precious And Grace 3 La Grange 3 Sheik 3 Have You Heard? 3 Like a Prius, reliable and without frills.

Some fun songs. Had never listened to ZZ Top before and I liked it more than anticipated. But wouldn’t seek it out.

Como he leído, blues rock barbudo. Disco que rezuma testosterona. La Grange es enorme.

I can’t help but like La Grange. The rest of this album was pretty cool too, but it had peaks and valleys. Evens out to a sold three.

Bluesy, I liked it.

Una boy band the rock and roll. Agradable de escuchar, se disfrutan los solos de guitarra. Pero, nada del otro mundo.

Pretty aight

Fun, bouncy, bluesy southern rock. Repetitive, but not boring.

I don’t consider myself a ZZ Top fan, and this album pleasantly surprised me. Hot, Blue and Righteous was probably my favorite discovery. A great classic rock listen!

I think I would like it better if I was on my motorcycle on the highway. Big ol’ chopper.

I love the blues rock sound of this album, but to me it gets very samey and none of the tracks really stand out at all. 3.3/5

Too honky tonk for me. 2.5/5, rounded up

For me largely pleasant and inoffensive rock music. Interesting guitar and some classic songs. Not one I’d revisit often, but clearly quality music.

feels like THE original classic rock album, based on timeline. if I asked for classic rock and someone put this on I wouldn’t be mad

Solid album. Good tight performance with quality sound engineering.

Least interesting for me so far in week 1. It's clearly good, it just doesn't resonate with me.

a nice blast from the past ;-)

Bastante bien, aunque "La Grange" está muy por encima del resto del disco también me ha sorprendido "Move me on down the line". Este si lo veo imprescindible sobre todo por lo que tuvo que suponer en 1973.

Bad asses.

One long jam session, including legendary la grange

I am not sure I have ever heard a ZZ top song ( Okay, maybe one or two ) - much less listened to a whole album. Not terrible though. To me, each song had the same sound - like long hair in a trans am with beer cans all over the floor.

Meh. Interesting to hear a different side of the trio as someone who knew them better in the 80’s-90’s but not radically different from other white blues artists to my ears

I did enjoy this album because it seemed it was bit more sophisticated than other releases by ZZ Top. Nonetheless I don't feel they need to be on this list. For me it's just a rather standard rock album.

Pretty solid blues rock. Sounded a lot to me like the Allman Brothers. I only knew ZZ Top from when they went more mainstream. Not really my cup of tea but some of it was chill.

Listening to this you can hear where the Black Keys got some of their sound from.

It's fine

ZZTop это прям дефолт хард рок, прям олицетворение хард рока. А какие у них бороды смешные. Я фаном не являюсь, а знаю! Альбом приятный, ничего выдающегося. Такое рок-кантри душевное. Три

Love the hits, but don't need to revisit the misses.

Lots of classics. Some questionable spots. Precious and Grace is a new playlist add.

I’ve heard people say ZZ Top is good but haven’t really listened to much of their music. It was pretty cool if not my usual style of music. This album contained their well-known track La Grange Listens: 2 Fave Track: Master of Sparks Rating: 3

Netter Slowrock, aber nicht ganz mein Fall.

I like the guitars. Blues gets a bit old sometimes idk

do a barrel roll

Fun fact: I went to a ZZ Top concert when I was 11. I went to see them up close and they looked like newly decomposed bodies. I remember that night because that was the first time I had been hit on by an older man.

Decent but not a big fan

Pretty groovy, slightly repetitive for me, but Texas blues has never really been my thing, but surely as good as its going to get, pretty raw and the vocals are slick as hell. Also amazing guitar layers if not sometimes annoying, still see the beauty.

Couple of good songs and a good overall sound. Don’t think I’ll invest in this one again though

Waiting for the Bus- 7/10 Jesus just Left Chicago- 7/10 Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers- 6/10 Master of Sparks- 7/10 Hot, Blue and Righteous- 6/10 Move Me on Down the Line- 7/10 Precious and Grace- 7/10 La Grange- 8/10 Sheik- 7/10 Have You Heard- 5/10 67/100

It was a nice album to have as background music. Was easy to listen to and I could see it being a great accompaniment to an old fashioned in a chill bar.

Some fine songs but La Grange slaps

wasn't really expecting to like this but you know what. it's fine. got some bangers here. not offending me. a haw-haw-haw

A high 3 stars- it definitely grew on me during my second listen! It's the kind of album where I'd enjoy the music if someone else turned it on in a bar or something but I wouldn't turn it on myself. I already knew La Grange going in and that remained the highlight of the album, although each song did have at least one part that I enjoyed. Generally fun guitars and bluesier/groovier than I expected in some parts, with a few fun moments lyrically. Last point- it's funny when an album has a song about a brothel sandwiched in between a few songs about the second coming of Christ.

Waitin' for the Bus- 3.8/5 Jesus Just Left Chicago- 3.3/5 Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers- 3.7/5 Master of Sparks- 3.6/5 Hot, Blue and Righteous- 3/5 Move Me On Down the Line- 3.4/5 Precious and Grace- 3.5/5 La Grange- 3.9/5 Shiek- 3.4/5 Have You Heard?- 2.9/5 Total- 3.5/5

Seems dated.

Fun album

only one real good song

Nice but it's 3

Starts off strong. Not the best ZZ Top album and the rest did blur into one a little, but it was decent.

6.5/10

Eh, ZZ Top

Next 5 songs played by my Spotify Algorithm: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need to Know The Animals - Brother Bill ( Last Clean Shirt) Tom Petty -Love is a Long Road The Who - Love Ain't For Keeping Led Zeppelin - Over the Hills and Far Away

3.1/5 This was better than I expected but still kind of boring. Best track: Precious and Grace

They have a good sound

bluesy and sad but hitting me at a bad day

Nice to hear what ZZ Top sounded like back before the 80's. Good blues rock band. Not 100% what I'm into but good.

Leur commercial breakthrough avec La grange! Pas aussi nice que Eliminator, la barre était haute.

It's fine. Raunchy Southern 70's blues isn't really my bag.

Great Tejas rock

Classic songs, decent album

This is a solid rock album. I only know the Classic Radio station rotation of ZZ Top hits, but there is a lot more to them. They're almost like a light Sabbath.

This album rocks! I love the understated blues, rock. They do a lot more than a lot of their contemporaries of that era of rock. ZZ Top and Thin Lizzy do a very similar interpretation of the blues and also injecting some rock to it. They really have some interesting grooves and jams on this.

das album riecht nach männlichkeit

I usually like ZZ Top a lot. Sadly most songs on this album were boring. I didn't enjoy them as much as I would have thought initially.

Not my favorite zz top album

Standard bluesy classic dad rock. Has a few iconic tracks, a good pace, good dive bar rock that I would rarely choose to listen to.

Like all ZZ Top, this is alright but a little boring. Their hit is on here so that helps.

I've never been a big fan of ZZ Top as they were hugely overplayed in my youth and I got thoroughly sick of them. This is the first time I've listened to one of their albums from start to finish and it was just okay. Maybe I shouldn't have listened to it first thing in the morning!

a real bluesy southern rock record. La Garange hits with the force of a trailer truck.

Not sure what it was about this one but I really enjoyed it. It was chill yet upbeat. Nice background music

The occasional interesting song or moment but mostly fine background guitar music

Everyone know this album from the most famous song on it, la grange. Now that I’m coming back to it, I like the songs with a good beat, Jesus just left Chicago, and have your heard? are two songs that I would be able to chill too and just listen to the beat. Favorites have got to be have you heard?, Waitin for the bus, and Jesus just left Chicago. I’m rating it a 3, Would have rated it higher but EVERY song isn’t amazing

Good guitar but kinda mid

What bar bands WANT to sound like. Their guitarist went crazy. Mostly amazing record. Makes me want to have a couple brews with the guys around the fire in semi-cold weather if that makes any sense. Personal Favorites: Jesus just left Chicago, Hot Blues and Righteous, Have you Heard?

- "entspannter Rock", der mich nicht überfordert mit zu vielen Instrumenten - cleanes arrangement - chilliges Album mit einer guten Länge (33min)

Eh, It was fun and iconic but not too notable. Like the 70s

Really solid blues rock. Good guitar playing. Good songs. Pretty good.

Was way better than I thought it would be

This is a decent hard rock. I like how some of the songs flow into each other. The album is kinda one note the whole time, but it was a enjoyable one note. Do I think this deserves a spot on this list... not really... La Grange was actually great though!!

Pretty alright Favorite songs were master of sparks and la grange

Pretty solid blues-y rock stuff. I'm a sucker for songs that are based on 12 bars blues stuff. La Grange is a banger even if it was overplayed for 50 years. Fav song- La Grange

I was surprised to find that I really liked the first two songs on this album and found most of it enjoyable enough to listen to. I do not like "La Grange," but that could partially be due to hearing it on the radio so much growing up. I just find the main riff a bit cheesy in that song. Overall, I can't see myself going back to this album, really, but it was a nice listen through once, and it's good to have a reference point for ZZ Top and this style of classic southern blues rock.

solid 70s hard rock outing

Enjoyed it funk rock vibes

Prima album lekker oldschool waiting on the bus was favoriet

1973: a great year for music. Was this life-changing? No. Was it a grooving, driven, southern influenced listen? Absolutely. Exactly what you'd want when you think of ZZ Top featuring their number 1 song

Interesting but wont come back.

Okayish. There were good tries.

three bros with three stars because of three meh songs

3/5. A fun bluesy boogie album that is way more danceable than it has right to be. There are a few songs that are skippable for sure and but the good ones are pure rock and roll. It's fun and smooth but not a perfect album, just an okay bluesy rocking time.

Gritty, straight to the point blues. "La Grange" is the most popular song, but for me "Jesus Just Left Chicago" is the real highlight. 3.5/5 Would listen again

I listened.

Good instrumentation 3.5

Solid Texas Blues/Rock. La Grange is a classic.

If these tracks weren't blasted on every classic rock station, every beer commercial and 90s TV show, I would have really liked this album. I've just heard LA Grange so many times it's grading now. Anyway, I still dig it.

Really only being familiar with La Grange, this album was interesting. It feels grungy and grimy. It is unpolished, yet musically, it is quite good. The heavy rock mixed with blues is a blend of music that I personally really enjoy. I should listen more to ZZ top.

Two words: butt rock.

The blues can go miles and miles on some really simple, repetitive stuff if the band is having fun and taking care of its sound. La Grange is a classic. It's also the same blues, but the somewhat unique syncopated riff is distinguishing enough to set it apart.

Good fun blues, I guess.

Digging the blues rock and crunchy riffs, and La Grange is a classic. Not sure the fast cars, loose women and drinking beer tropes work as well today.

Old- man blues/rock. Best enjoyed with a pint of bitter. Liked this album a lot, but felt that the formulaic stock blues riffs and ostinatos made the album lack some much-needed spontaneous/free energy. Also hate tracks that fade out!

Very generic bluesy rick. Have to say I was a bit disappointed as a ZZ Top fan. All their hits are great but there were a few misses on this album

I was not thrilled they they gave me another zz top album two days after the first, but this one was way better. 70s zz top is way better than 80s zz top.

A good solid blues-rock album.

Solid. A few bangers. Favorite(s): Waitin' for the Bus, Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers, La Grange

This was fine. Didn't hate it and didn't really like it. It was just there.

Good beards

This album is weird. The mix sounds off, things sound louder and quieter from track to track. This is supposedly ZZ Top's best album, "top Top" from what I'm told. But I wouldn't know. These boys are not for me. I do prefer Zig-Zag vs. Top rolling papers though.

I need more lyrics but it was good work music Would listen again 5/10

Some proper "old man's rock". 'La Grange' is a real classic, and even the rest of the songs mostly contain real catchy and memorable riffs. If that's exactly what you want you'll love this. I think personally it gets a bit boring after a while somehow. Very bread and butter rock, maybe I just wasn't in the mood for that. One thing that surprised in a good way was how well they sing.

Mostly generic bluesy rock. Parts of it were quite boring but it had some surprisingly progressive almost metally licks here and there. I never really enjoyed ZZ Top all that much, it is my type of music but I think there are other bands that just do what they try to do better. A weak 3.

It was ok

3.5/5 Deep southern rock sounds with a very strong lead guitar and throaty vocals. La Granges guitar riff is a classic

Not really my “go-to” type of music but I like the jazzy vibe and they are obviously amazing musicians. Really enjoying the lead guitar, usually the most enjoyable part of the song in my opinion. If I was born in the 60s, this would probably be my jam… Pros: jazz-influenced, lead guitar is on point Cons: repetitive riffs when not playing solos, lyrics don’t really grab me Standout tracks: Waitin for the Bus, Beer Drinkers & Hell-Taisers, La Grange

Was ok nothing stood out much and wasn't really my thing

Rating: 3.5

I quite enjoyed this as a music history lesson. What were the origins of the 80s juggernaut ZZ Top? Turns out it was some solid, if not super remarkable, 70s Southern blues rock. The best song, clearly, is the classic "La Grange," which obviously owes a lot to John Lee Hooker. The rest, especially "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers, is an enjoyable listen (except for the absolutely insufferable "Hot, Blue and Righteous." Ecch. Just wanted to put that out there in case anyone wants to fight me over that.)

# 78 : Good album, has a couple of hits. I would not buy this album with my hard earned, but I would listen to it again.

Half killer, half filler. Every time you listen to La Grange, your chest hair density increases by 15%

Rock solid bluesy rock album and La Grange is an all timer but I don't find anything exceptional going on here. Highlights: Waitin for the.bus Jesus just left Chicago La Grange

The instrumentals are great. I’m not the biggest fan of some of the vocal performances on the album, especially on ‘precious and grace’. However, I found ‘Hot, Blue and Righteous’ and ‘Have you heard?’to be standout tracks. By no means is this a bad record, and it may be a lack of understanding on my part of the genre of blues music, but I’d felt like I’d heard this kind of music before and besides a couple of the tracks, it didn’t really stand out to me. On first listen, I’m giving it a low 3.

Couple of catchy tunes

Very rockabilly, could see myself coming back to a best of album

This album is very meh. There are a couple of songs I recognize from my youth, and two are decent tunes. But the rest are very predictable guitar blues tunes that never stray from the 3 chord blues structure. And they are all in the same key, so one song pretty much sounds like the other.

Good job zz top 3.6

I wasn't excited about this listen. I generally don't favor ZZ Top. This was good though. I'm glad to have listened to an entire ZZ Top album. They are not as bad as I imagined. La Grange is a great track, but one song doesn't make an album. However the rest of the album is solid and consistent. I kinda liked a few songs, nothing was bad.

I'm fairly certain this album precedes the facial hair for which the band is ultimately known. I expect plenty of riffing and southern, bourbon-infused rock music. Waitin' for the Bus delivers on all expected fronts. Has an undeniably tight groove with Billy Gibbons letting his frets shine toward the back half. Fine blues rock song that doesn't really go anywhere; I could see this being played in a bar as background music and not really getting anyone's attention. Not really much standing out through the first four tracks. Fine background music, but nothing remarkable. Hot, Blue and Righteous (clearly not fans of the Oxford comma) is a scaled back blues ballad. Something here really reminds me of Purple Rain by Prince, which makes me uncomfortable. The spacious guitar work is almost Gilmour-esq in its control and tone. Precious and Grace stands out. Lead by an attitude filled riff that feels sort of like southern-Zeppelin and the vocal snarl that ZZ Top is so known for. Opens up to a sprawling instrumental section with some slide guitar. Kind of a weird tune, but I enjoyed it. La Grange almost feels like it stands alone relative to the rest of the record. First of all, it fucks. Second, it just has a different character about it than the rest; feels like it got the "hit single treatment" where the rest are kind of flat. Sheik is another one that stands out on this record. Its got an undeniable groove about it that would lend itself nicely to some improv jams through the middle. This album is a very soft 3 for me. Nothing is particularly bad, but the last three songs are really strong.

Was definitely hoping for some more La Grange type songs on this but still was enjoying it, just nothing that special. Probably won't come back to most of these though.

good fun rock 3.4

need to relisten

I always thought ZZ Top were a rock band, so I was pleasantly surprised by this bluesy stuff. Only pleasantly - it is a pretty solid, unexciting album. La Grange and Mastber of Sparks were my favourites, but nothing else stood out.

Not really listened to any ZZ Top before, I knew them more for their cameos in the TV series Bones. I liked the Blues Rock style, but it never seemed to elevate to that next level. It was enjoyable and short enough that I'd probably listen to it again. Highlights: Jesus Just Left Chicago Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers La Grange

Don't think I've listened to zz top before... I like bluesy rock, although, I didn't enjoy this as much as I feel like I should've for some reason. The opening few tracks are good and la grange was great. However, I feel like some of the rest of it was lacking a little bit. Thought "hot, blue, and righteous was particularly bad . I wanted a lot of it to be more bluesy and heavier rock. The 3 live tracks at the end of the album I listened to were really good though, bet I would enjoy it much more live 3

Raw, bluesy, swampy in its own non-CCR way. ZZ Top had many more albums than I would have guessed.

Pretty good, honestly. Can't say I'm a huge fan of anything other than La Grange, but it's certainly listenable. Probably would've been fun live Favorite Track: La Grange 3/5

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Had a kind of elemental simplicity - like a southern rock Ramones. I've heard La Grange a million times with no idea of who it was - assumed it was someone like John Lee Hooker

The three homies? Let your beards blow in the wind as you cruise down a dusty ass road listening to these good old boys bring it!

Just regular dad stuff

Yeah more dad rock

Du rock qui ne peut nier des origines américaines

Pretty solid rock record. I will say that I had never heard of ZZ Top so when i read the album title i thought it was gonna be a bit more spanish than it was.

seeee 7/10

"master of sparks" just sounds like a very good QOTSA song.

Another really enjoyable ZZ Top album, there was some songs I felt were a bit filler-ish but the rest, really really enjoyable, it’s definitely a high end 3.

What's not to like...Nice start to a morning commute ! 1973 release that was their breakthrough album...La Grange - iconic instrumentals...I thought move me down the line had a bit of mick jagger about it 😀

Not bad, but gets a bit repetitive. Definitely full of good songs, but a lot sound the same.

Reasonably varied for what is, effectively, a pretty standard blues-rock album. A nice range of guitar tones and just the right balance of sloppiness/tightness. With that said, after listening I can only really recall one song - La Grange. A good example of the genre, but unlikely to convert you if you're not already a fan.

Old time boys, doin old time tunes. 4 chords and the truth, baby.

Excellent guitar work in all songs, highlighting "Precious and Grace", but it still sounds too old (in the sense of outdated and not classical) for my taste. I bet it was great in 1973 but nowadays is just one more. Good for whom likes old-fashion rock music

La Grange is a good song, but most of the album doesn't have that same groovy feel to it and just feels a little more like your typical classic rock. It mostly felt kind of flat and even the songs with good riffs didn't have anything else to build on

ZZ Top are the kings of what they do, but this album struck me as quite same-y. Big respect but low score sadly :(

ZZ Top are pretty consistently an act I enjoy more than I'd expect myself to. I wasn't particularly excited for this album, but it does actually sound pretty good, has a cool swagger to it and great guitar riffs. A few of the songs here are kinda duds which bring it down from a 3.5 for me, but overall, still pretty solid.

I didn't expect to like this album. I'd never heard of this band before, but the cover, band name and album title all brought to mind something that was maybe a bit silly. I was imagining some kind of goofy, overproduced reggae pop or Latin pop. It wasn't what I expected- it was actually way better- but still wasn't my favourite album I've ever heard. It ended up being bluesy rock, which was a pleasant surprise. I wouldn't say the goofiness I was expecting was entirely not there, but it wasn't bad enough that I couldn't take any of the songs seriously. The musicianship isn't bad. There are two singers, one whose voice I much preferred to the other. Neither are the lyrics, though there's a bit of a fixation on holy/religious imagery to describe the blues. You get the impression that these guys worship the genre a bit too much. The only song I absolutely couldn't stand was "Sheik," which just made me cringe. Overall, I found the whole thing a little pretentious. Ironically, they were trying too hard to seem... authentic and unaffected. Because those things are "cool." They're part of that "bad boy" image associated with blues and rock. I bet ZZ Top saw that in all their idols, and here, that's who they're trying to be. I guess that's just how it is: you're either great or you're trying to be great. Favourite tracks: Hot, Blue and Righteous, Have You Heard?

Competent Blues Rock.

Top shelf bar rock, but still not what I wanna listen to most of the time. Time and a place. Used to love La Grange back in the day though.

Some pretty catchy riffs on this blues-rock disc. A decent listen

First time hearing this album and it was not what I expected. Features some great ‘boogie-rock’ tunes.

Niet echt mijn muziek maar je kan er niet echt omheen. Neutraal voor mij.

Twee albums van hun in een week. Deze vond ik een stuk leuker, la Grange is een banger

Pretty good I guess. Nice facial hair

wala lang ako sa mood for the guitars

pretty fun listen liked the few blues influences (3.5/5.0)

rockin and a rollin

I didn't mind this album.

26th May 2023 Listened during the day on a very busy work Friday before going to Italy on Monday. Supposed to be at woody’s wedding but stayed at home. I like ZZ Top, bearded dad rock with passionate vocals

This is fun, ZZ Top tend to be, but it falls short of being really really good. La Grange has a great little riff behind it, and the rest is all really good for nodding along to, getting close to funk in some places. The live versions of three of the songs at the end are also really good. A strong 3, just falling short of a 4.

Enjoyable southern rock/blues rock album, though nothing really stood out on it.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - La Grange (8) 2 - Waitin' for the Bus (1) 3 - Precious and Grace (7)

Solid rock album. Will listen again

Great album.

Pretty cool album nice guitar and allat texas stuff

Great blues rock album nice for a road trip

Unique and interesting, just not one's thing. This is much the better of the two ZZ Top records included in this list. The approach here feels borderline arty and just a touch gimmicky, even understated and sorta take-it-or-leave it. Later, on the ubiquitous Eliminator, which feels distinctly unworthy of this list, the approach – indeed the whole presentation – was almost entirely a gimmick, and got to be overreaching and borderline obnoxious. Several good deep cuts here, beyond the unforgettable "LaGrange;" "Hot, Blue & Righteous" and "Master of Sparks" are strong and pleasantly greasy surprises.

ZZ top always seems to put together a competent album, even if their style of rock doesn't particularly appeal to me. They do blues rock, but they have their own spin on it, which keeps it interesting 3/5

Classic rock and blues.

Good classic rock, a bit too bluesey for me, not bad though

"La Grange" is the best, most popular song on the album by far. I thought the rest of it was just alright. 7/10.

Perfectly good rock album. Would put it on a playlist, would listen to the playlist for it.

Fine™️ classic rock

When ZZ Top were good.

Shoulder shrug. Not sure if bad or not for me so generic three stars.

Decent, might improve on relistens, but my initial take is that a lot of these tracks just feel like a long intro for La Grange at times. La Grange slaps so hard it bumped the rating up a star though

La Grange is great, but the rest doesn’t stand out at all really. Just fine

So... This is the album ACDC were listening to before dirty deeds. Track 2 is definitely Ride On. Even Ed Sheeran couldn't defend that one. Overall an enjoyable album, not sure I'll revisit. Only track 2 really stood out as noticeable. Very very short. 3/5 quite enjoyable, but clearly quite influential.

Can't really go wrong

I respect ZZ Top, especially their early work. Good, hard driving, and bluesy. 3 stars.

Didn’t enjoy this album as much as their previous one but it was a good listen anyway. 3*

A lot of Dad rock recently... this was of a piece.

solid cock rock

Solid enough blues rock album. Can’t say there is really a bad song here, just nothing that exciting or notable. La Grange is obviously a classic rock staple, I enjoyed Hot, Blue, and Righteous and Master of Sparks. A solid listen overall, just wouldn’t search it out. There are much better blues rock albums I would rank higher than this.

le père d'eltrapeze

ZZ Top pas du tout à la hauteur, je vais en toucher deux mots à mon paternel, qui comme vous le savez est un très grand fan.

+Sheik +La Grange Nothing in this album really stuck with me.

- Never listened to a ZZ Top album before - Different to what I expected but I liked it - Not always a big fan of this type of music but I enjoyed this - Fav songs: Jesus Just Left Chicago, La Grange, Have You Heard?

Listened to this while driving into Knoxville, TN on a sunny Saturday. It definitely kinda works in that type of soundtrack to a Southern car ride, though for sure would've been better to swap out Tennessee for Texas. (Though, thank God I wasn't driving there.) But in some ways it's difficult for me to hear anything here other than one of the world's premiere white boy blues bar bands. Maybe it's because I just watched that Elvis movie and had cultural appropriation on the brain? I don't know. The 'Top put their own spin on things and, of course, took this sound to a very different area later on. But of the batch here my favorite was easily the ballad "Hot, Blue and Righteous." It stands out to me as having one foot in Southern Rock, three toes into country & western, and only like two toes into the blues. Lots of drunken slow dance opportunities with that number.

Decent album. Didn’t particularly like or dislike it in anyways, there were a lot of guitar parts I was impressed by in the ways of wondering about composition, but otherwise it felt pretty mid tier, for my personal tastes.

I can understand the appeal, and some songs were good, but never been a fan of ZZ Top, so this was a personal preference rather than objective.

Some really good riffage, but mostly kind of boring otherwise. Standouts: Waitin' for the Bus, Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers, La Grange

Destination: Rock Direction: Straightahead La Grange is monumental Can give or take the rest

Interesting album, ZZ Top is much more bluesy then I thought they were going to be.

3.5 stars. Blues-y southern rock starts slow and builds into more energy halfway through. Standout is "La Grange" which takes it's iconic guitar groove from a John Lee Hooker boogie blues song.

This is not bad, but I can't really bring myself to care about it all that much. Probably more of a me problem tho.

Rentoa rock n' rollia jota on helppo kuunnella.

Aitoa, rehellistä rokkia bluesvivahteineen. Toimii aina vaikkei sielua sinänsä saa säkenöimään

Det är zz top. Stabil platta

It’s fine, but I wasn’t blown away by any means. La Grange is obviously the best song off this album and is a classic.

I thought I'd already listened to this and didn't have much enthusiasm. Bit I ended up enjoying this more than the last ZZ Top record that came my way. Very Rolling Stones. Best song Waiting for the Bus.

I didn't realize this record was from so early in the 70's though their music has been a staple radio during the 70's and on classic rock stations. They've been on my radar since I was a teen, I like their music, but it didn't engage me enough and I didn't have the desire to buy their records or see them live. Above average 70's rock, there's lot more enjoyable bands/music, but if you're forced to listen to something on the radio, Zed Zed (I'm Canadian) is okay and not the worst choice...

The first track had me kind of excited for some blues rock, but it turned out to be kind of a let down I tuned out as it progressed. Luckily "La Grange" came in to save the day near the end, but overall I didn't like "Tres Hombres" as much as I was hoping.

Nice blues rock album by ZZ Top. It's got great guitar licks, but is missing the earworm songs like "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Sharp Dressed Man", "Legs" or "Tush".

I feel like my dad would love this 3.5/5

A cool bluesy, outlaw country sound with some iconic guitar riffs. Too bad the singer sounds like a drunk uncle performing karaoke at the family Christmas party. 3/5

Mid rock album, only two songs caught my attention so it wasn’t terrible

Crunchy Southern bluesy rock. Enjoyable listen. I definitely wouldn’t mind listening again. Although I don’t know if I’ll return to this one because there are just so many rock bands I like better. This album wasn't THAT good. Listening to this made me want to go listen to the first Blue Oyster Cult album.

geggjuð gömul

"Hot, Blue and Righteous" is about the Navi. "La Grange" is a banger even though it's been overused in pop culture. A lot of the rest is just kinda decent blues rock.

Enjoyable blues rock

The days of this album, 1973, change my perspective on it no end. They sound a lot more like Kings of Leon of the day than the puppy ZZ Top of.

Compared to their hard rock contemporaries, ZZ Top stayed faithful to their blues roots. A remarkably bluesy guitar and vocal style layered with heavier, doomier bass and a tough image and lyricism. The instrumentation stands out to me, especially those kick-ass guitar solos. There are plenty of weak songs here, with only guitars keeping me engaged. I felt "Move Me on Down the Line" tried too hard to mimic glam rock contemporaries, but there was still plenty to enjoy. But in retrospect, the only thing genre-breaking is the landmark hit "La Grange", and I'm disappointed nothing else even comes close to it.

An alright collection of blues/rock that did get a bit samey half way through. I would imagine that if you knew the songs well, they would be great to sing along to in the shower.

Thought it would be like some foreign language country music and that I wouldn't like it from the cover, but this is surprisingly.. decent? So far. (Hot, Blue and Righteous) Oh goodness "Jesus Just Left Chicago" I REALLY don't like this one. Skipping! Master of Sparks - decent

tämä on oikeaa rokkia. ei mitään nössöily indie hömpötys new wave liberaali post punk vittuilua. oikeaa saatanan rokkia. ukot pelaa kunnon vitun musiikkia, paskoo pöksyihin, kusee housuun, ehkä oksentaa ehkä jopa vittu kuolee pois... en tykkää billy gibbonsssin äänestä. kova live bändi. noh la grange paras

Odd to hear zz still working out their sound - legendary songs at the end and a sense of their swaggering sound

ZZ Top maybe not my favorite. I appreciate it, but generally found it boring

Correct.

ZZ Top are a fine band, don't get me wrong. But I never quite got on with them as much as I feel like I want to. I feel like being in my 30's and from South West England I'm from the wrong time or place, or more likely both, to really appreciate what they do. That being said I really enjoyed this album, more than I thought I would if I'm honest and of course it has the absolute banger "La Grange" on it which massively goes in its favour. Although the version I heard is a 2006 remaster, the production and recording style of this album is very much of its time, the guitar and fuzz just sounds so 70's in that instantly identifiable way which if I'm honest isn't my favourite recording style, I prefer a more generic timeless production. The song writing is great and catchy but again very old school at this point. Not bad but not something I'll likely put on again any time soon. 3/5

Not bad but unfortunately another missed opportunity as I just think the harder rock style of La Grange fits them much better than the softer rock style of the rest of the album

Right on Rock and roll from the early 70's. Great rhythms

Reconheci um hit clássico do rock americano.

La Grange and other songs you might not know that are definitely recorded by ZZ Top

2.5 stars for the album 0.5 stars for the beards. It's not the greatest thing ever but it's ZZ Top I can't give them less than 3 it would be a crime. I like La Grange, who doesn't?!

Nice sound, not very exiting though.

Good blues rock sound, but ultimately an uneventful listening experience for me.

Chugging bluesy Rock

Pretty cool but doesn't wow me - 3 stars

Although it's an album I doubt I'd ever come back to in its entirety, I do quite dig this. Lots of great guitars and driving rhythms, alongside some solid bluesy rock.

Actually a very fun, extremely digestible album - good solid guitar music, bordering on (early) metal I suppose, rhythmic, bluesy, rocky, punchy. Lyrically unambitious but satisfying. Could listen to it quite happily driving down a motorway near a new town in the late 70s or whenever it was released.

Ya like 12-bar blues?

Feel like this is a 3.5. Enjoyable blues rock and a fun listen from a band I really only knew for their beards

Super 1 dimensional but some badass rock.

La Grange is real solid

This is one of those albums I feel like I'd need ot hear in its place and time. Today, there's not much that stound out to me on here. The lead (only?) single "La Grange" doesn't sound much at all like the rest of the album. There is only a bit of the ZZ Top signature sound here, that would follow in the '80s. What I've always thought of as a buzzsaw guitar sound. This album is not bad, but not memorable.

적절히 그루비하고 적절히 신난다.

Not as bad as I thought it would be. Yes it's blues rock but it's so energic that it finally gets to you.

Not as bad as you'd think, but still pretty boring.

Blues rock - meh - but good for what it is

Another generic blues rock album to add to the long list of this challenge, but at least the ZZ Tops have personality and a sound of their own. And, as a bonus, some hits. Nothing special here, but I was happy to listen to it.

mid, good sound but more background music for me mostly.

This started off really well and, particularly with Master of the Sparks, I was enjoying the album quite a lot (certainly more than Eliminator). The second half didn't quite hold up for me though, and other than La Grange I found it difficult to latch onto anything. I'll still give it a 3 but it's much more on the 2-3 borderline rather than the 3-4 I was considering halfway through, which is a shame

rockero

p305. 1973. 3 stars No frills quality 70s southern blues/rock. No track longer than 4 minutes, so it never outstays its welcome or gets bogged down by guitar wankage. Prefect driving music. On the other hand... a lack of standout tracks, a lot of them sound the same.

1. Make a riff 2. Add lyrics 3. Give it a guitar solo 4. Repeat this 9 more times *also for some reason end the album not with an epic guitar solo but with an annoying repetitive chanting instead.

Definitely more blues rock than the ZZ Top "Sharp Dressed Man", "Gimme All Your Lovin" 80s pop rock that I grew up with. I did recognize "La Grange" and generally enjoyed the album overall, wasn't particularly wowed by it but definitely listenable and catchy.

love me some bluesy rock. proto-stoner rock vibes.

Pleasant, but not much more. Kind of disappointing. Highlight: La Grange

Guitar special. 5/10 tho

Waiting for the bus, Jesus just left Chicago, Beer drinkers & Hell raisers, Hot, blue and Righteous - classics, feel good rambling music Amazing album, catchy tunes, good for a vibey afternoon or a themed party. Has limited creativity, but comes from the heart

Surprising album knowing only their later hits. Not my style, but nice to listen to.

La Grange is sooooo damn good that it accounts for most of these starts.

Couldn’t really get into it but wasn’t bad at all

Somewhat trapped in time. Languid guitars and slightly lethargic beat to the song.

2 or 3 great songs

I like the bluesy riff on this album, however half of the vocals I could not understand. Also there are a couple duds on here especially in the frist half. My favorite song on this album was MASTER OF SPARKS. With it southern rock charm. So over all not a great introduction to zz top but not terrible

Much better than I thought it would be. Pretty enjoyable.

Great grooves, nice sound, but every track is pretty much a slightly worse version of "La Grange".

It’s giving… playing cards on the decking, drinking wine from the bottle, dancing in the kitchen with your besties. Stand outs were “Hot, Blue and Righteous” and “Sheik”. Very into the slick guitars and the throaty vocals. Kiss kiss.

Rough and tumble type classic rock. Great start, great end. Less captivating in the middle. Still a solid album

Decent listen with no surprises

It was average. I did like a couple of songs.

La Grange is solid but everything else was fairly vanilla.

Enjoyable

This was alright. Le Grange rules, but the rest is a little unmemorable

Nothing memorable, nothing bad. Very average.

LE VRAI ROCK Prefs: Waitin' For The Bus/Jesus Left Chicago, Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers, La Grange Moins pref: Sheik

Nice pacing, decent enough.

Solid album overall, La Grange was the only real stand out track.

Good recording quality La Grange :) Half the songs are pretty good, half are meh
